COVER BY SERIAL CUT Serial Cut is a Madrid based studio, established in 1999 by Sergio del Puerto, that works on a wide variety of worldwide projects, but focuses mainly on Art Direction. Serial Cut works alongside an ever-growing team of professionals who specialize in different areas such as photography, design, motion-graphics and 3D design. Depending on the nature of a given project, different collaborators are chosen to give each piece a new dimension.

Image and text are a great combination that we like to use on all the projects we work on. Typography plays an important role in the end product! Inspiration comes from current and past decades, but we always review it and renew it, bringing it into today’s perspective with a contemporary look.

Some of the clients they have worked with so far are Nike, Zune, Sony, Diesel, PlayStation, Dodge, MTV, Channel 4, LG, The NY Times Magazine, Rolling Stone, Blackberry… Serial Cut‚ Imagemakers since 99.

Little by little the days are getting shorter and chillier, and the wind is already carrying the first leaves of the season. There’s no denying that Fall is here and with it a renewed appetite for indoor pleasures, a warm cup of coffee, a good book, or a great movie.

Spain arts & culture is more than happy to accompany you along the lengthy winter road. This season’s program is loaded with everything you may want on those long dark evenings.

Spanish cinema will receive special attention with more than 20 Spanish Film Festivals across the country, an accurate reflection of what is now probably the most diverse and attractive film industry in Europe producing everything from comedies to thrillers, sci-fi and even westerns. It is no coincidence that Spain’s cinema has also produced a growing number of international names such as Pedro Almodóvar, Antonio Banderas, Penélope Cruz, Javier Bardem, or Alejandro Amenábar. In addition to cinema, this season’s program will once again bear our signature blend of tradition and modernity with major heritage exhibitions, such as the wonderful Pastrana Tapestries at the National Gallery, alongside the newest work from avant-garde Spanish visual and performing artists We are convinced that our Spain arts & culture 2011 Fall-Winter catalogue has something for everyone and lots of “Spanish” warmth to keep the autumn gloom away.

Spanish Cinema: A Journey Into The Unknown Diego Galรกn Diego Galรกn is a leading expert on Spanish cinema and former director of the San Sebastian Film Festival.

Spanish cinema is generally less known outside of Spain, or at least outside of Europe and Latin America, despite the fact that various Spanish actors and directors have won awards at international film festivals, or have achieved international acclaim. Among these celebrities are of course the directors Pedro Almodóvar and Alejandro Amenábar, as well as the actors Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, all of whom have won at least an Oscar. However, people tend to forget others such as Luis Buñuel, who won the 1973 Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film for ‘The Discrete Charm of the Bourgeoisie’ (El discreto encanto de la burguesía). This award led to a legendary dinner at the house of George Cukor with admirers of Buñuel’s films such as John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, Billy Wilder, William Wyler, Rouben Mamoulian, Robert Wise, George Stevens, and Robert Mulligen, all of whom were leaders of the North American film industry at the time. Likewise, the director Carlos Saura is not included in the current lists of famous Spanish film personalities, although his films Mamá cumple cien años (‘Mama turns 100’, 1979), Carmen (1983), and Tango, no me dejes nunca (‘Tango’, 1998) were all nominated for the same Oscar that Buñuel won in 1973. He is also the author of a fascinating and intimate manuscript for which he has received various proposals to turn into a Hollywood film, all of which he has rejected: ‘If I can make the films I want to make in Spain, why would I make them in other countries?’

Using the Oscars as a point of reference, we must mention José Luis Garci, who won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1982 for Volver a empezar (‘To Begin Again’), and was later nominated on three other occasions for Sesión continua (‘Double Feature’, 1984), Asignatura aprobada (‘Course Completed’, 1987) and El abuelo (‘The Grandfather’, 1998). One would also have to consider Fernando Trueba who won the same Oscar in 1994 for Belle époque (‘The Age of Beauty’) and in his acceptance speech said to the surprise of the audience, ‘I would like to believe in God in order to thank him, but I just believe in Billy Wilder so… Thank you Mr. Wilder.’ Last but not least, we note the artistic director Gil Parrondo, who won the Oscar for Best Artistic Direction for Patton (1970) and ‘Nicholas and Alexandra’ (Nicolás y Alejandra, 1971), both directed by Franklin J. Schaffner, and was nominated a third time in 1972 for ‘Travels with My Aunt’ (Viajes con mi tía), directed by George Cukor. But these people are a thing of the past in Hollywood, like actress Sarita Montiel who abandoned

Hollywood after being reclaimed in the internationally successful Spanish production El último cuplé (‘The Last Torch Song’), just as she was becoming famous. She starred in ‘Vera Cruz’ (Veracruz, 1954) next to Gary Cooper and Burt Lancaster, ‘Serenade’ (Dos pasiones y un amor, 1954) alongside Mario Lanza and Joan Fontaine and ‘Run of the Arrow’ (Yuma, 1957) with Rod Steiger and Brian Keith. Nowadays one of the best known and prolific Spaniards in Hollywood films is the actor and director Antonio Banderas, while actors such as Paz Vega, Elena Anaya, Elsa Pataky and Santiago Segura have made only passing appearances in North American films.

However, the objective of this article is not to discuss the triumphs or failures of the past, but to highlight present day Spanish cinema. Over the past couple years numerous young directors have moved to the forefront of Spanish cinema, with a great capacity to create stories giving their pictures prominence or rather distancing themselves from the literary influence that prevailed in the works of their predecessors. The director Álex de la Iglesia noted on one occasion that when he was young, he would sit down and fixate on the TV after returning from school. Even at a young age he was able to discern if a show was informative or for children, or if he was viewing commercials or one of Ignmar Bergman’s films. He focused on images that fascinated him and in which he could lose himself to the point where they fused with the images in his mind. If you watch recent movies directed by Álex de la Iglesia including among others El día de la bestia (‘The Day of the Beast’), Perdita Durango (‘Dance with the Devil’) (based on the novel by Barry Gifford), Los crímenes de Oxford (‘The Oxford Murders’), and Balada triste de trompeta (‘The Last Circus’), you will understand his vision. His cultural formation is based fundamentally in imagery, and his own films are an amalgam of visual fantasies that display a clear modernity and strength. Álex de la Iglesia shares with other young Spanish filmmakers the same visual education background, and the tendency to adopt classic film genres as a form of expression. Alejandro Amenábar is a clear example of this. ‘The Others’ (Los otros) starring Nicole Kidman is influenced by Alfred Hitchcock, while the academy award winning ‘The Sea Inside’ (Mar adentro) starring Javier Bardem, or ‘Agora’ (Ágora), his most recent film starring Rachel Weisz, has influences from social drama or historical action genres.

The new tendencies of Spanish film are distributed among various genres, principally film noir, horror, and comedy. At the margins of the industry, other independent filmmakers with personal works are standing out at international film festivals. Among them are José Luis Guerín (Inisfree, 1990; En construcción (‘Work in Progress’), 2001; En la ciudad de Sylvia (‘In the City of Sylvia’), 2007), Jaime Rosales (La soledad (‘Solitary Fragments’), 2007; Tiro en la cabeza (‘Bullet in the Head’), 2008), Javier Rebollo (Lo que sé de Lola, 2006; La mujer sin piano (‘Women Without Piano’), 2009), and Isaki Lacuesta (Los condenados (‘The Condemned’), 2009; La noche que no acaba (‘All Night Long’), 2010, about the experiences of Ava Gardner during her time in Spain.

Considering the number of films recently produced in Spain, the amount of thrillers is considerable. The influence of film noir is very noticeable in the films of Enrique Urbizu (La caja 507 (‘Box 507’), 2002), Jorge Sánchez-Cabezudo (La noche de los girasoles (‘The Night of the Sunflowers’), 2006), and Daniel Monzón (La caja Kovak (‘The Kovak Box’), 2006, and especially the extraordinarily successful Celda 211 (‘Cell 211’), 2009, which, with references to films of the 30’s and 40’s, tries to denounce the corruption of our country. Notwithstanding, ‘Buried’ (Enterrado) (Rodrigo Cortés, 2010) is one of the most notable films of the last few years.

We should acknowledge that some of these films have inspired the North American film industry to produce remakes. Among others, Abre los ojos (‘Open Your Eyes’), directed by Alejandro Amenábar, was remade into ‘Vanilla Sky’, directed by Cameron Crowe, which starred Tom Cruise in the leading role. Likewise, REC was remade into ‘Quarantine’ (Cuarentena), directed by John Erick. On the other hand Spanish directors such as Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (‘28 Weeks Later’ (28 semanas después) or ‘Intruders’) and Luis Alejandro Berdejo (‘The New Daughter’ (La otra hija) starring Kevin Costner) have achieved great success in Hollywood alongside those who have come to the end of their contracts. The comedy of manners has been a classic genre in Latin American and Italian cinema for years. Although it generally develops in the native language of the locale, it has managed to cross borders into the Anglo-Saxon world. It suffices to recall the fame that actors Marcelo

Mastroianni and Sofia Loren gained in the United States. Considering Spanish cinema once again, Pedro Almodóvar returns to the forefront as someone who, sharing his personal troubles, has conquered the whole world. The rights to Mujeres al borde de un ataque de nervios (‘Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown’) were acquired to produce a Hollywood remake that in the end was never finished. However, it was remade into a musical comedy that opened on Broadway in 2010. Many other Spanish directors have followed Almodóvar’s style, or at least have intended to, while others remain in the traditional line of comedy. The term traditional, however, is a contradiction in itself when telling stories that take place in the present, generally about the trials of adolescent love. Santiago Segura stands out as someone who has produced dark comedies about the anti-heroe Torrente that have been shown in various countries. His first film, Torrente el brazo tonto de la ley (‘The Dumb Arm of the Law’) (1998), has been especially successful. In this summary I review contemporary Spanish film, but one cannot ignore the presence of international actors and directors in films of Spanish origin. To cite some cases, Viggo Mortensen in the super-production ‘Alatriste’ (Alatriste de Arturo Pérez-Reverte) (Agustín Díaz Yanes, 2006), Benicio del Toro in ‘Che’ (Che:Guerrilla) (Steven Soderbergh, 2008), Christian Bale in ‘The Machinist’ (El maquinista) (Brad Anderson, 2004) and Natalie Portman alongside Javier Bardem in ‘Goya’s Ghost’ (Los fantasmas de Goya (Milos Forman, 2006). And then there are Woody Allen’s Spanish productions ‘Vicky Cristina Barcelona’ (2008), ‘You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger’ (Conocerás al hombre de tus sueños) (2010), and ‘Midnight in Paris’ (2010).

They say, and with reason, that current Spanish cinema is one of the most varied on the world stage. The different themes reflected in Spanish films (even more diverse than those previously mentioned), the vivacity of the actors, When and the fresh imagination of directors and screenwriters Xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx together attract international audiences more so than Where those solely within Spain. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the fall of the World Trade Center on September 11th, 2001, the New Museum will exhibit Del Rivero’s piece, [Swi:t] Home: A CHANT (20012006), in its lobby gallery. The work was previously installed at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. in 2006. Del Rivero’s New York City studio and living space was across the street from the World Trade Center when it was attacked in 2001. In the aftermath of the event, Del Rivero’s studio was filled with ashes, dust, and debris from the surrounding buildings. She eventually began to clean, catalogue, and piece together bits of letters, legal documents and scraps of paper left in her apartment. The scraps were eventually hand sewn onto rolls of fabric over the course of many months. The New Museum intends to install the piece in long scroll-like, horizontal bands. This will allow viewers to become fully immersed in the intricacies of Del Rivero’s work, to see all 3,316 pieces of burnt papers which she found and has carefully stitched to rolls of cotton mesh amounting to more than 500 feet of material.

Spanish Influences in life and work of Bill Viola is an interactive workshop that aims to bring the life and work of the world’s most renowned video artist to a small number of students who wish to share their experiences with this living genius of Mass Media Art. Born in 1951, Viola is a New York native. The workshop is multidisciplinary and consists of audiovisual, musical, and literary exercises related to the work of the American video artist. It will be led by Federico Utrera, Professor of Audiovisual Communication at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (Rey Juan Carlos University) and author of ‘Viola on Video.’ ‘Viola on Video’ is the world performer’s first biography, and contains the first catalogue of his work.

Jordi Socías (Barcelona, 1945) is now a classic Spanish photojournalist. Also influenced by international masters such as Cartier-Bresson and Avendon, his style is representative of several generations of reporters. From the 70’s onward he has collaborated with the most important Spanish magazines and newspapers. The exhibition is a retrospective of roughly 80 photographs, snapshots of Spain’s transition to democracy, surreal images, and panoramas of every day city life. Without a doubt, the main body contains a gallery of portraits that reflects Jordi’s personal view on key people that embody Spanish and European culture over the past four decades.

Psychological Portraits

The artistic versatility of Alberto Schommer, in his extensive career, has led him to be one of the best Spanish photographers of all time. In his “psychological portraits” of myriad personalities from renowned writers such as Cela and Rafael Alberti to political figures like Suárez or Felipe González, and well-known artists including Susan Sontag, Doris Lessing, Salvador Dalí or Joan Miró, he creates an interactive atmosphere with the portrayed.

The Berklee Flamenco Project is the first international conference to bring promising Spanish flamenco students to one of the world’s most prestigious music institutions. The project, a collaboration between the SPAIN-USA Foundation and Berklee College of Music, will include three principle activities:

Exhibition of the four late-fifteenth-century Flemish tapestries known as The Pastrana Tapestries from the Collegiate Church of Pastrana in Guadalajara, Spain.

In the late 15th century the king of Portugal, Afonso V (1432–1481) likely commissioned a set of four monumental tapestries commemorating his conquest in 1471 of the Moroccan cities of Asilah and Tangier, strategically located near the entrance to the Strait of Gibraltar. Exquisitely rendered in wool and silk threads and woven by Flemish weavers in Tournai, Belgium, the tapestries, each measuring 12 by 36 feet, teem with vivid and colorful images of knights, ships, and military paraphernalia set against a backdrop of maritime and urban landscapes. The tapestries are highly unusual for their depiction of contemporary events rather than scenes from ancient or biblical history. The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, and the Fundación Carlos de Amberes, Madrid, in association with the Embassy of Spain, the Spain-USA Foundation, and the Embassy of Portugal and with the cooperation of the Embassy of Belgium and the Embassy of Morocco in Washington, DC.

In the Fall, the Spanish Cultural Center in Miami will open its new venue (the first time in fifteen years) in the city’s expanding downtown neighborhood at 1400 Biscayne Center. The new site features a large space and a garden that will allow us to host our open-air concerts and outdoor workshops. In addition, we will begin working with a new focus, maximizing the strategic position of Miami to serve as a proactive agent and permanent bridge between the USA and Latin America with special attention to Central America and the Caribbean due to their proximity. We will keep our permanent programs and offer new and powerful ones:

» Workshops: on different subjects such as creative writing, performing arts, publishing design, photography… directed by well-known Spanish artists in their discipline. In collaboration with the University of Miami and la Piscifactoria- Laboratorio de creación (Madrid).

» Journey Through the Arts: Saturday mornings. An art program targeting immigrant youth, children and their families to explore through different artistic forms, self-expression, collaboration with others, community awareness and the protection of the environment. Workshops are offered in various mediums of art such as painting, drawing, collages, design, photography, and papier mache among others. Each series of workshops ends with an art exhibit of the best artworks created by the students.

» Chicle: one Saturday per month. Program created for children ages 6-12 years old which aims to educate children while having fun.

» Música y Aparte: one Thursday per month. This series will show the latest works by local artists, highlighting to Cuban Musicians (Cubans represent 50% of the Miami census). » Miami Rocks: one Friday per month.
