et a taste for the Stevens Point area at one of three local breweries. Tour the historic Stevens Point Brewery, a local favorite since 1857, complete with samples. Then be sure to explore the Central Waters Brewery in Amherst ranked as one of the best breweries in the nation, or the newest micro-brewery O’so Brewing Company known for freestyle brewing. Despite their close proximity, each brewery has something different to offer in style, atmosphere and experience. If you’re still thirsty for more, head outdoors. Explore the best views in the county on foot or by bike and follow the Green Circle Trail, a 30.5-mile trail that circles the city of Stevens Point winding along the Wisconsin River, Little Plover River and other tributaries. The trailhead for the Green Circle Trail is located in the Schmeeckle Reserve, a 280-acre nature preserve on the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point campus. Hike or bike the Ice Age Trail and wind through the hills and valleys once shaped by glaciers. More glacial trails framed by woods and wildlife are

available at Standing Rocks County Park. Or take a journey down a once abandoned railroad bed, by foot, bike or horseback, where the 18-mile Tomorrow River State Trail brings the county’s history and natural beauty to the forefront. Birding is also varied and plentiful in Portage County. As part of the Central Sands Prairie Region of the Great Wisconsin Birding & Nature Trail, the area offers the Buena Vista Grasslands, Godfrey & Maybelle Erickson Audubon Park, Dewey Marsh State Natural Area, Iverson Park, Richard A. Hemp State Fishery Area, Schmeeckle Reserve, and the George W. Mead Wildlife Area. Venture out on one of the many waterways in Portage County. More than 40 lakes, an array of rivers, streams, and flowages offer an opportunity to fish, kayak, canoe and swim. County parks, such as Lake DuBay, Lake Emily, Jordan Park, and Collins Park offer a variety of uses, as well as camping. Need to rest your legs but still want to cover some ground? Experience area attractions, history, food, museums and more by staying on the road less traveled as you retrace the routes once forged in the past. Rediscover the roots of Portage County, by bike or car, by quietly winding through the countryside on the Polish Heritage Trail, where the first rural Polish settlement in

Wisconsin and second in the United States was established. Highway 51 is a road that links heritage, culture and explores the north/south corridor of the county and encourages your journey on the roads less traveled. Journey to the crossroads of Highway 51 and Highway B (in Plover), where time will allow you to reminisce of days gone by with unmarked roads and no map to call your own along the Yellowstone Trail. The road, once marked by yellow stones, was the first cross-country route from Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound. While the roads have changed, the charm has not. If you’re still looking for a good drive, visit one of the area’s golf courses. The Wisconsin River Golf Club, known for its picturesque course along the river, allows you to play up to 6584 yards. SentryWorld’s championship golf course is ranked as one of Wisconsin’s top courses, known for its signature flower hole. If you’re ready to retreat indoors for some rest and relaxation, be sure to visit The Wellness Spa, a full-service spa where relaxation embraces you the minute you walk through the door. When hunger strikes, be prepared to respond. Take in the historic downtown district and specialty sandwiches, as you sit on antique chairs at the Wooden Chair. Walk through a 130 year old beer vat to enjoy a local favorite at the Hilltop Pub & Grill. PHOTO BY KT ELEMENTS

ortage County, named for the portage that was necessary between the Wisconsin and Fox River, sits at the crossroads of the Wisconsin River Valley and the Central Sands Region. Nestled in the center of the state, its landscape is as diverse as the rich cultural fabric that represents its communities. Covering more than 800 square miles in Central Wisconsin, Portage County has one city, 17 townships and nine villages. Most of the county is rural offering year-round recreational opportunities, dotted with small communities like Junction City, Almond, Rosholt, Nelsonville, Park Ridge, Whiting and Amherst Junction. When Stevens Point was first founded in 1858, the logging industry and trading posts defined the location. With help from the

Wisconsin River, the railroad and rich soil, the area continues to prosper. Today, the area has a diverse economy, home to headquarters for such companies as Delta Dental, Sentry Insurance, Travel Guard and Herrschners. Established in 1894, the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point has been a staple in the community. The 400acre campus includes the Schmeekle Reserve, a 280-acre nature preserve which includes a 24-acre lake. The University also houses the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, Museum of Natural History, Carlsten Art Gallery, Planetarium, and numerous cultural exhibits and performances throughout the year. The Village of Plover, the most populated village in Portage County, was incorporated in 1971. Located in the central sand plain, it

is home to a diverse mix of industry. With an emphasis on agricultural and service businesses, local employers include paper companies and numerous agricultural suppliers like Okray, Paragon Farms, Del Monte, Golden County Foods, and McCain Foods. Steadily developing as a shopping hub in the Central Wisconsin region, it is also home to the Korean War Memorial, at Lake Pacawa, Heritage Park which features 10 buildings from Portage County’s past (one of four historical sites maintained by the Portage County Historical Society), and 19 parks. The Village of Amherst is located along the shores of the Tomorrow River. Nestled in eastern Portage County, in an area shaped by glaciers, it offers a varied landscape of rolling hills. A quiet community, it has a very strong sense of place, complete with a strong business, art and environmental sectors. Amherst is home to the Lettie Jensen Community Center, American Governor and Central Waters Brewing Company, conveniently located along the Tomorrow River State Trail and near Lake Emily County Park. The Lake Dubay Area, situated in northwestern Portage County, encompasses most of the townships of Eau Pleine, Hull and Dewey. Mostly rural, this area offers a wide variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for each season.

Tomorrow River (for intermediate skilled paddlers) Begin your adventure in Nelsonville. Stop to view the historic Rising Star Mill, one of four historical museums maintained by the Portage County Historical Society. The mill is open for special events throughout the year. This segment meanders through woods and fields. Four miles downstream in the Village of Amherst, be sure to follow portage signs to avoid dam. Once you reach Amherst, stop for a stroll and lunch in the downtown district, complete with shops, restaurants and an art gallery. Continue on the Tomorrow River; suggested take-outs are at Highway T or Highway DD. Please note: during high water, submerged logs and swirling water can cause problems. During low water, rocks and shallows will be present.

Jordan Park to Iverson Park (for intermediate skilled paddlers) Park your car in Iverson Park off Highway 66 in Stevens Point, then travel Highway 66 east to Jordan Park. Jordan Park offers camping as well as a Nature Center that is open in the summer, complete with special programs and staffed by a naturalist. When you are ready, begin this route at the canoe ramp on the south side of Highway 66 in Jordan Park. The route will meander through generally flat water, and is an 18

excellent trip for bird watchers in June and July. Because of the wooded landscapes on either side of the river, it is an excellent way to view fall colors in the area. Once you have reached Iverson Park, enjoy a dip in the water near the swimming beach, or walk on a short segment on the Green Circle Trail that makes its way through the park. If you are hungry, try a local favorite, the Hilltop Pub & Grill, just east of Iverson Park.

Wisconsin River North (for intermediate skilled paddlers) Take Highway HH West out of Stevens Point (approximately 4 miles) and you will find a boat landing on the right side of the road. Put in here and head back towards Stevens Point. As you proceed downstream, the islands to your left are surrounded by channels. The adventurous paddler may wish to poke around the islands, spend some time fishing, bird watching or animal viewing. All channels headed south open into the Stevens Point Flowage and back to the main channel. In the Flowage, go under the power lines and take out at the boat landing near the swimming beach in Bukolt Park on the left. Try following the Green Circle Trail segment

to Pfiffner Pioneer Park to walk along the riverfront. Across the river, you will see K.A.S.H. Playground at Mead Park. At the southernmost tip of Pfiffner Park, you will encounter the Riverfront Arts Center. Downtown Stevens Point, just one block east offers a variety of specialty shops, dining, historical murals and other attractions. Many other waterways offer recreational opportunities throughout Portage County such as: Lake DuBay, McDill Pond, Mill Creek, Adams Lake, Collins Lake, Lake Emily, Jordan Pond, Sunset Lake, Lake Thomas, Wisconsin River flowages, The Little Wolf River, Spring Creek.

On Land Hiking Start your journey at the Schmeeckle Reserve, the trailhead for the Green Circle Trail. Enjoy the varied rural landscape around Sunset Lake in the northeastern corner of Portage County. Begin your trip in the parking lot of the Sunset Lake County Park, near the Central Wisconsin Environmental Station. The country roads surrounding Sunset Lake are lightly traveled and offers a wide variety of terrain. Circle back to your starting point and take a dip in Sunset Lake, with a beautiful sandy beach. The clear crystal waters of this glacial lake offer a perfect spot for a picnic after your ride. Standing Rocks County Park offers an assortment of mountain bike trails at various skill levels. The trails are open daily from May 1–Nov. 16. There are plenty of climbs, roots, and rocks that wind throughout the wooded park. Mountain bikes must stay on designated trails at all times. All single track is signed and one way only. (Trail fee required) Biking is also available on rural routes throughout Portage County; Ice Age Bicycle Trail, Tomorrow River State Trail, Green Circle Trail, Schmeeckle Reserve, George W. Stevens Point, through continuous paved and graveled trail. Visit the newest section of the trail, just to the northeast of the Schmeeckle Reserve, where nearly a half-mile section of boardwalk was recently installed. Or try heading west from the Schmeeckle Reserve, and walk through the Stevens Point Sculpture Park, the newest city park with trails connecting to the Green Circle Trail. Multiple access points for the trail, and its 14 segments, make the trail easy to reach. More than 80 percent of the Green Circle winds through secluded natural areas. For a more rural view of the area, try the Tomorrow River State Trail. The 18-mile trail, developed on an abandoned railroad grade, connects the villages of Plover and Amherst Junction and consists of crushed limestone packed to a smooth surface. Hiking is also available at the George W. Mead State Wildlife Area, Ice Age Trail, Hartman Creek State Park, Jordan Park, Lake Emily Park, Schmeeckle Reserve, Standing Rocks Park.

Yellowstone Trail he Yellowstone Trail was established and stretched from “Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound.” Between 1915, when the Yellowstone Trail Association extended the Trail to Chicago, and in the 1930s the Yellowstone Trail served Wisconsin from Kenosha to Hudson. This year, 2012, the historic auto trail celebrates its 100th Anniversary! The Yellowstone Trail enters Portage County from the east in the quaint Village of Amherst. Should your journey include an overnight stay, the Amherst Inn B&B is a Victorian gothic style house built in 1887. Continuing on County B into the Village of Plover, a visit to Heritage Park reveals an authentic Yellowstone Trail cabin amongst the other period buildings gathered from around the county. Traveling north on Business 51, motorists enter the city of Stevens Point, home of the Stevens Point Brewery which has a rich heritage of brewing excellence since 1857. Tours are available. Also in Stevens Point is the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s “Old

Travel Green Wisconsin isconsin’s conservation history and leadership has a long successful tradition. With leaders including Aldo Leopold, John Muir, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin has proven its commitment to the environment time and time again. Locally, the Stevens Point area is home to the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, honoring the people who worked to preserve the very things that make our state unique, and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Renew the Earth Institute. For more information about Travel Green Wisconsin certified businesses, please visit: www.travelgreenwisconsin.com To protect the environment, the very green spaces and waterways that define our area and make it desirable to visitors and residents, it will take continued effort and support from individuals, businesses and the community. Portage County by its nature is positioned perfectly to embrace these concepts. Our green space infrastructures are no coincidence. Citizen and governmentally led stewardship of our natural resources, along with strong support from local advocacy groups have maintained an exceptionally high quality of life and sense of place.
