History of the Stevens Point Area H I S T O R Y

O F

n the 1830s, John B. DuBay established a trading post twelve miles north of Stevens Point on the Wisconsin River. A permanent white settlement began in 1836, after the signing of the treaty between the United States and the Indians. In 1838, George Stevens made the rugged journey from Fort Winnebago and took his first survey of the area. Stevens and a Native American returned with supplies a year later. The supplies were both hauled up the river to Little Bull Falls (now Mosinee) and the rest were housed in a rough shack, farther downstream. Unknowingly, George Stevens had founded Stevens Point. On September 10, 1844, the first land entry in the future village and city was made by Andrew Mallarkey, who then laid out the first plat of the town in 1847. By 1850, Stevens Point had a population estimated at 200. The area owes most of its early development to the Wisconsin Central Railway which became the Soo Line when purchased by Canadian Pacific in the late 1880s. The railroad transported cargo and passenger alike through Northern Wisconsin. It is a railroad romance story rivaling the historic building of the Union Pacific across the West. The railroad linked the area to the rest of the country. Today a marker stands at

the west end of Main Street along the Wisconsin River where George Stevens began the settlement of Stevens Point. Industries such as manufacturing, transportation, insurance and construction have long since replaced the lumber mills and trading posts that used to dot the Wisconsin River shore. The economic life of the area continues to expand and diversify as older companies grow and newer organizations choose to call us home. Today the industries on which the city’s economic life depends include manufacturing, transportation and communications, wholesale

and retail selling, insurance, finance, real estate, service utilities, construction and education. In recent years, the economic life of Stevens Point has become more varied and many of the older industries have expanded or diversified, such as NewPage, Sentry Insurance, Joerns Healthcare, Associated Bank, Donaldson Company, Kimberly Clark Corporation, Canadian National and Worzalla Publishing. Portage County also boasts some of the richest farmland in the state. The Village of Plover, located in the heart of Wisconsin’s “Golden Sands,” has become one of the nation’s most important agricultural suppliers of potatoes and other vegetables. Okray Produce has been in business in the w w w . S t e v e n s P o i n t A r e a . c o m

Plover, a visit to Heritage Park reveals an authentic Yellowstone Trail cabin amongst the other period buildings gathered from around the county. Traveling north on Business 51 motorists enter the City of Stevens Point, home of the Stevens Point Brewery which has a rich heritage of brewing excellence since 1857. Tours are available. Also in Stevens Point is the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s “Old Main” built in 189394. Heading west, your route on the Yellowstone Trail takes you through the historic downtown district with its turn of the century

urban architecture. For detailed information, contact the Stevens Point Convention & Visitors Bureau at 800-236-4636. FROM THE DAYS OF THE ORIGINAL YELLOWSTONE TRAIL: PHOTO COURTESY OF PORTAGE COUNTY HISTORICAL SOCIETY

he Yellowstone Trail was established and stretched from “Plymouth Rock to Puget Sound.” Between 1915, when the Yellowstone Trail Association extended the Trail to Chicago, and the 1930s the Yellowstone Trail served Wisconsin from Kenosha to Hudson. The Yellowstone Trail enters Portage County from the east in the quaint Village of Amherst. Highway 51 is a road that links heritage, culture, and the Northwoods of Wisconsin to southern Louisiana. Traveling through six states, Highway 51 creates a pathway for travelers to explore the many cultures, cuisines and nostalgia of Wisconsin. Fifteen communities along Highway 51 in Wisconsin have come together, to emphasize the joy of the journey. All along Highway 51, travelers will experience the culture, cuisine and quirks that are part of each community. Highway 51 includes the stories of Abraham Lincoln, railroads, Elvis Presley and Graceland, blues music, industry icons, civil rights, and plantation life. There’s a wealth of diverse cultures,

traditions, music, and food stretching from the American Heartland to the Deep South. Crossing into Portage County on Highway 51 brings you into the heart of Wisconsin. Getting to the center of the journey is the best part, especially when

it’s nestled amidst an abundance of green space and waterways, highlighted by recreational activities, industry, and heritage. This portion of the route is dotted with art and culture, with just a hint of beer from our local breweries. Learn more about the stories along Highway 51, or create one of your own, by planning your journey online at www.explorehwy51.com or by stopping by the Stevens Point Area Visitor Information Center at exit 161 to pick up a copy of the Journey Journal and Passport. Wisconsin’s conservation history and leadership has a long successful tradition. With leaders including Aldo Leopold, John Muir, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Gaylord Nelson, Wisconsin has proven its commitment to the environment time and time again. Locally, the Stevens Point area is home to the Wisconsin Conservation Hall of Fame, honoring the people who worked to preserve the very things that make our state unique, and the Midwest Renewable Energy Association’s Renew the Earth Institute. For more information about Travel Green Wisconsin certified businesses, please visit: www.travelgreenwisconsin.com/about/certified.htm To protect the environment, the very greenspaces and waterways that define our area and make it desirable to visitors and residents,

it will take continued effort and support from individuals, businesses and the community. Portage County by its nature is positioned perfectly to embrace these concepts. Our green space infrastructures are no coincidence. Citizen and governmentally led stewardship of our natural resources, along with strong support from local advocacy groups have maintained an exceptionally high quality of life and sense of place.

Look for the screened-back leaf symbol behind the listing of participating members of Travel Green Wisconsin.
