Founder’s Letter

DEAR FRIENDS,

CLIENTS & COMMUNITY,

Eighteen years ago, I opened the doors of a little 550-square-foot store with nothing but a deep love for home décor and a big dream. I could never have imagined the journey that would unfold. Spaces has grown from that tiny showroom into a full lifestyle brand — one that creates beautiful homes, stages properties, and brings inspired design to life across Jamaica and beyond.

But growth has never been just about square footage. It’s been about people. From the loyal clients who have shopped with us year after year, to the dedicated team who pour their creativity and passion into everything we do, and to my own family who have cheered me on through every season — you are the true inspiration behind Spaces.

Looking back, I see more than milestones. I see resilience through a recession, adaptation through a pandemic, and countless moments of joy as we’ve helped transform houses into homes. What makes me proudest is that our work has always been about more than furniture — it’s about community. Through our outreach, from building homes for families in need to this year’s anniversary project designing recreational spaces for children, we’ve learned that good design can change lives.

As we celebrate this 18-year milestone, I am both humbled and excited. Humbled by the support that has carried us this far, and excited for what’s ahead. Our vision remains the same: to create spaces that inspire, uplift, and bring people together.

To our clients, partners, and friends, thank you for believing in Spaces. To my daughters, Amari and Zein, thank you for reminding me every day why building a legacy matters. And to my incredible team, thank you for making Spaces more than a store. You’ve helped make it a story worth telling.

Here’s to the next chapter, filled with creativity, purpose, and community.

With gratitude,

Here’s to a perfect

“spatial relationship”

Congratulations Spaces on celebrating 18 years of transforming Interior Design Visions Into Reality. At Valerie Levy & Associates and Spaces Jamaica, we believe that it’s not just about the outer aesthetics of a house or how one might lay out the furniture, but it’s about the memories, about creating moments that have meaning... one beautiful property at a time. The family and friends at VLA want to wish the team at Spaces Jamaica all the best for another 18 years of success.

BUILDING A BRAND AND A LEGACY

When you step into Spaces, there is an immediate sense of calm, that rare blend of balance, intention and quiet luxury that makes a room feel both modern and timeless. For Janelle Pantry-Coke, founder and creative director, that harmony has always been the foundation of her vision.

Eighteen years ago, Janelle opened the doors to a modest 550 square foot boutique with a handful of home décor pieces and an unshakable belief in the transformative power of design. What began as a passion project soon evolved into Spaces, one of Jamaica’s leading interior design and lifestyle brands, a name now synonymous with curated and intentional living.

The Early Days

Looking back, Janelle recalls those first few months as a leap of faith. With no grand business plan, just an eye for beauty and a desire to help others create homes that felt personal, she built a loyal community of clients who trusted her taste and instinct.

“I wanted people to walk into their homes and feel something,” she reflects.“That sense of comfort, joy or purpose that comes when a space truly reflects you.”

As the years went on, that vision grew organically and with purpose. What started as retail naturally expanded into full scale design services, home staging and eventually a thriving e-commerce platform. Each new chapter reflected Janelle’s belief that good design should be both beautiful and accessible.

“ “
“I wanted people to walk into their homes and feel... That sense of comfort, joy or purpose...

Resilience and Reinvention

The brand’s journey has not been without challenges. Economic shifts and a global pandemic tested both business and mindset. Yet through it all, Janelle’s approach remained steady: adaptability, purpose and faith.

She attributes Spaces’ resilience to these principles and to an unwavering trust in her instincts. Every setback became a chance to refine and reimagine. It is this quiet determination that has kept the brand evolving rather than merely surviving.

More Than Furniture

For Janelle, Spaces has always been about more than what meets the eye. The name itself holds deeper meaning, a reminder that we all occupy space and that every environment we inhabit has the power to shape how we feel.

Her philosophy is rooted in emotion, in the idea that design is not transactional but transformational. Every piece, from a sculptural light fixture to a simple linen throw, is chosen with intention to evoke warmth, balance and authenticity.

“It has never been about the sale,” she says. “It is about the feeling a space gives you.”

Motherhood and Legacy

In many ways, Janelle considers Spaces her first child, a brand nurtured with care, discipline and vision. But six years ago, when she welcomed her twin daughters, Amari and Zein, that perspective shifted.

“Motherhood tested me in ways I never imagined,” she admits. “Balancing leadership, creativity and parenthood forced me to grow in new directions.”

Her daughters have become her daily source of motivation. Watching them play, decorate their dollhouse or build miniature homes from Lego reminds her why she began this journey in the first place: to create with purpose and to inspire possibility.

Today, as she celebrates 18 years in business, Janelle views Spaces as both a brand and a legacy in progress, a reflection of her values and a gift to the next generation.

Defining the Spaces Aesthetic

Ask anyone familiar with Spaces and they will tell you the aesthetic is unmistakable. A refined fusion of Modern organic and tropical modern, it captures the natural textures and relaxed elegance that define contemporary Caribbean design.

Clean lines, oak wood tones, linen upholstery, fluted detailing and sculptural forms nod to the serenity of modern organic design. the light filled openness, woven textures and touches of greenery reflect the island’s easy sophistication. The result is a look that feels globally relevant yet deeply rooted in Jamaican sensibility, timeless, livable and full of soul.

Looking Ahead

As Janelle reflects on nearly two decades of building Spaces, her focus remains on evolution. “This next chapter is about expansion and collaboration,” she says. “It is about continuing to build with heart.”

Part of that growth is Spaces Edit, a platform dedicated to sharing design stories, celebrating local creativity and connecting readers to the art of living well. It is an extension of Janelle’s core belief that design should inspire, uplift and endure.

A Lasting Philosophy

For Janelle, design is not about perfection, it is about presence. It is about crafting rooms that reflect who we are and how we live.

“Your home should tell your story,” she says with a smile. “I just help write it.”

Team

Behind every inspired room, Spaces Jamaica has been at the heart of design innovation in the Caribbean; shaping the way we live, entertain, and connect through beautiful, functional interiors. Behind every inspired room and signature style is a team whose creativity, collaboration, and passion define the Spaces’ legacy.

Brianna White, Jodi-Anne Paul and Lee-Anne Jones of team Spaces share their thoughts on design trends, lessons learned, and the moments that continue to inspire them. We get personal with the people who make Spaces what it is today... timeless, forward-thinking, and unmistakably Jamaican.

White Brianna

1. Are there any current design trends you love or would recommend?

I’m really loving the shift toward softer, more natural interiors; warm wood tones, textured neutrals, and organic shapes. It’s modern but still feels calm and lived-in, which I love.

2. How would you describe your personal design style?

Contemporary modern with a minimalist soul. I love clean lines, neutral tones, and details that make a space feel calm but full of character.

3. Which décor pieces are your “must-haves” for every space?

z Warm neutral palette

z Natural textures: wood, linen, stone

z Art that feels personal, not perfect

z Great lighting, it changes everything

4. What is your favourite thing about working at Spaces?

What I love most about working at Spaces is the persons here both past and present. Being surrounded by such creative and passionate individuals is truly inspiring. I’ve had the pleasure of working alongside incredibly talented teammates who bring fresh ideas and positive energy into the space. And, of course, the beautiful furniture and accessories are always a highlight! I always look forward to seeing new pieces arrive; it’s like getting a front-row seat to the latest in design, which is a reminder of why I fell in love with design in the first place.

5. Which project or space you’ve worked on are you most proud of, and why?

The PADDINGTON TOWNHOUSE. It came together exactly how I pictured it, the furniture, art, and textures flowed perfectly. It really captured everything I love about design: balance, warmth, and a sense of home.

Paddington Townhouse

6. What’s the most surprising lesson you’ve learned working in interior design?

That design is more emotional than people realize. You’re not just decorating a room you’re shaping how someone feels when they walk into it.

Jodi-Anne

Paul

1. Are there any current design trends you love or would recommend?

Current design trends that I would recommend are soft, organic shapes: Rounded furniture, curved sofas, oval side tables instead of strict rectangles. These lessen harsh lines and make rooms feel more welcoming.

2. How would you describe your personal design style?

My design style celebrates nature’s palette — blending organic textures, warm neutrals, and greenery to create calm, grounded spaces that feel effortlessly inviting.

3. Which décor pieces are your “must-haves” for every space?

z Greenery/plants - Helps connect the space to nature.

z Throw pillows and blankets - Helps soften harder surfaces, adds colour/pattern and makes the space feel more welcoming. Linen is my favourite.

z Area rugs - Grounds the space, defines zones, adds texture & warmth.

4. What is your favourite thing about working at Spaces?

Working in such a collaborative space has opened my mind to new possibilities in design. Our creative director’s openness, flexibility, and passion for client experience have taught me that great design is as much about connection as creativity.

5. Which project or space you’ve worked on are you most proud of, and why?

One of my favourite projects to have worked on is BENGAL COVE VILLAS. It was a collaborative team effort to bring this Boho-Coastal staging to life. Each room had its own personality, showcasing

Bengal Cove Villas

blue and turquoise colours inspired from the sea closeby, natural elements like jute rugs, rattan chairs and woven baskets and greenery throughout.

6. What’s the most surprising lesson you’ve learned working in interior design?

When a room feels lifeless, adding texture can fix almost any space. Layering wood, linen, ceramics, and greenery transforms a space instantly.

Jones Lee-Anne

1. Are there any current design trends you love or would recommend?

The current design trend that I am loving is Quiet Luxury. Quiet Luxury is implementing sophistication through simplicity. A design trend centered around timeless quality, understated elegance and craftsmanship. These principles create a space that feels calm, deeply comfortable, and refined. “Luxury that whispers rather than shout”.

2. How would you describe your personal design style?

I would describe my personal style as contemporary. Contemporary design reflects the spirit of the present moment — it’s ever-evolving, yet grounded in comfort and simplicity. It’s flexible enough to adapt to new trends, materials, and ideas, borrowing elements from different styles while remaining fresh and current.

3. Which décor pieces are your “must-haves” for every space?

Wall arts and area rugs are “must-haves" for every space! Through these pieces, you can achieve visual anchor, balance and introduce colour and texture into your space.

4. Which project or space you’ve worked on are you most proud of, and why?

I am most proud of the GLEN EAGLES renovation project as i served as both designer and project manager. the scope of this project gave me the opportunity to redesign key spaces in the home – including the bathrooms and kitchen – and carefully select furniture pieces that unify the interior. The result is a home that embodies quiet luxury; timeless and understated.

I introduced contemporary design elements into an older home to perfectly align with the client’s vision while respecting the home’s character.

Bengal Cove Villas

Fusing clean lines, neutral palettes and layered textures with the home’s original architectural features, a harmonious balance between current style and timeless charm was created.

5. What is your favourite thing about working at Spaces?

My favorite thing about working at Spaces is being able to turn concept ideas into real functional spaces and the constant variety of projects. Every project brings new challenges, styles and creative opportunities. I also enjoy exploring new stock items as they arrive in store. It's exciting to see fresh products and imagine how they can elevate upcoming projects. Incorporating these new pieces into my design projects ensures the projects feels current and unique.

6. What’s the most surprising lesson you’ve learned working in interior design?

The most surprising lesson I've learned working in interior design is flexibility and adaptability. Even with a plan things can change, whether it be stock availability or client preference so being able to adapt and problem solve are just as important as my design concept.

Chalmers Tennille

THE ART OF SPACE AND SOUL

In the world of art and design, few paths intertwine as fluidly as that of Tennille Chalmers; a creative whose journey reflects a deep understanding of both spatial harmony and human emotion. As a former member of the Spaces Jamaica team, Tennille’s keen eye for composition and texture has evolved into a profound artistic practice that bridges interior design and fine art. Her story is one of exploration, growth, and the enduring impact of creative collaboration.

Tennille is a mother, sculptor, and interdisciplinary artist. She holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts. Tennille officially worked with Spaces from 2017 to 2018 and has returned on many special occasions to lend her expertise. She is currently continuing her art practice while applying to graduate programs.

1. What initially drew you to Spaces, and what excited you most about joining the team?

Spaces was my first job after relocating to Jamaica. I had such a varied job experience and background I wasn't sure just which direction I would work towards. Somehow everything I did previously seemed to gel with the nature of my position - being creative, professional, organized, understanding changing visual trends, and getting to know our clients to understand how decisions about different arrangements in colours and textures could really upgrade the ambiance of their homes and other spaces.

2. How would you describe the energy or culture at Spaces during your time there?

It was wonderful working with Spaces, first at the Phoenix Avenue location, then during the relocation to Ardenne Road. It was the perfect balance where our team felt like family, but we also were very professional, ready to work and hungry for information and growth. As much as Spaces has grown, that same feeling still remains there.

3. Is there a project or moment that stands out as especially meaningful or defining for you?

There was a point where I worked with a few other young ladies and Janelle sent us to attend

one of the We Inspire Women events. I was really inspired! I was so grateful when considering how Janelle did things like that to nurture our potential.

4. How did working at Spaces shape your creative outlook or your approach to design?

Working at Spaces gave me my first real understanding of how the composition — the sum of elements within a space — can influence mood. It was there I first learned about the rule of three, and how applying it, for instance, to help a customer choose items for a console table, later connected to my understanding of the rule of thirds in art. Flipping through books of rug and upholstery swatches also deepened my appreciation for how colours and textures relate to our emotions.

5. What were some of the most valuable lessons you took with you after leaving?

Besides the great lessons I learned in visual language, my experiences at Spaces really confirmed that striving for excellence, keeping focused on your goals, being open-minded to change and just being a good person is a great recipe for success.

6. Can you share an example of how your experience at Spaces shows up in your work today?

While studying sculpture and other forms of fine art I've had to consider depth and dimension. I have to consider how a work feels within a space, and how its positioning within and relation to the environment affects how it is viewed. It is very intentional and I believe working with Spaces

really gave me some of my first lessons where this is concerned.

7. Looking back, how do you think Spaces helped prepare you for the creative path you’re now on?

Working at Spaces has been a great inspiration in knowing that I can balance my visual creative expression into a successful career. Watching Janelle nurture her passion to build her business is a great testament to how consistency can really fuel success.

8. What part of your time at Spaces are you most proud of?

The most proud moment I've had in my time with Spaces is after the move to the Ardenne Road location. I remember a meeting with Janelle discussing her plans to grow bigger and better. It was truly wonderful to see the progression.

9. In what ways has your career or creative direction evolved since leaving Spaces?

The elements of Art — line, shape, form, space, colour, value, and texture are all things I've considered when learning about interiors and design at Spaces. In my studies in fine art, researching and learning through these elements have been a rewarding part of my personal evolution.

10. As they celebrate 18 years, is there anything you’d like to say to the Spaces team today?

To Janelle and the team at Spaces, may your warm smiles, dedication to your craft, and great sense of style continue to bring joy into your clients homes and various interiors.

Rooted in design, refined through art, Tennille’s story is a testament to the lasting influence of Spaces and the power of creative growth.

Turning THE ART OF STAGING

INTO DEMAND Design

At Spaces, staging is more than decoration; it is strategy disguised as beauty. It is both a science and an art: the science of understanding what sells and the art of evoking emotion the instant someone steps through the door. Unlike interior design, which reflects the personal style and lifestyle of a homeowner, staging is about crafting a vision that appeals to many. It is not about how you live; it is about helping buyers imagine how they could. Every texture, accent, and layout is chosen with one goal in mind: to make a property unforgettable.

Beyond Design: The Strategy Behind Emotion

What sets Spaces apart is its deeply considered approach to every project. Staging for the team goes far beyond arranging furniture or placing art. Each space begins with an intimate study of the property’s architecture, light, and flow, identifying what to highlight and what to gently enhance.

The Cardinal

Whether it is a compact city apartment, a luxury villa, or a new development show unit, every detail is intentional. The team examines how buyers will move through the space, where their eyes will rest, and what feelings each room evokes. The result is design that does not just photograph beautifully but feels instinctively right. Every chosen piece, from a sculptural chair to a soft neutral rug, works in harmony to create a story of possibility: modern, sophisticated, yet warm and livable.

A Vision Realized at The Cardinal

One of Spaces’ most striking projects took shape at THE CARDINAL, one of Kingston’s premier luxury developments. The collaboration began with a single studio apartment, carefully styled to feel spacious, contemporary, and aspirational. The impact was immediate as the studios sold out almost immediately.

Encouraged by that success, the Spaces team was invited to stage the one-bedroom units and, later, the penthouses. Each design was tailored to its target market — from efficient urban living to refined, elevated luxury. The outcome was remarkable: a complete sell-out of every staged unit. For the Spaces team, it was both a validation of their process and a celebration of what staging can truly achieve. “For us,” they note, “the greatest reward is turning design into demand.”

Avoiding the Common Pitfalls

If staging is an art form, it is one that demands restraint. Many homeowners unintentionally over-personalize their spaces, using dark colours, bulky furniture, or excessive décor that obscures the home’s true potential. Spaces avoids these missteps through careful balance, neutral tones, layered textures, and lighting that opens a room rather than closing it in. The goal is always the same: to create environments that feel open, inviting, and aspirational.

Expert Advice for Sellers

For those preparing to sell, the Spaces team offers one simple, powerful piece of advice: start by decluttering and neutralizing. Think of your home as a blank canvas that allows buyers to project their own dreams. And never underestimate the power of detail. A freshly made bed with crisp white linens and layered pillows can instantly transform a bedroom into a tranquil retreat.

And when in doubt, call in the professionals. A well-staged home is not merely beautiful; it is strategic, a quiet yet compelling invitation that says, you could live here.

Every staging undertaken by Spaces is, at its heart, a story, a chance to connect architecture and imagination, lifestyle and aspiration. The team does not just design rooms; they design emotion, crafting environments that linger in the mind long after a showing ends.

PRESERVING THE SOUL OF

Jamaica’s

Spaces

HOLDING ON TO WHAT REMAINS

Jamaica’s spaces... whisper of endurance; of holding on to what remains... even in ruin, there is design, there is spirit, and there is home.

When the winds of Hurricane Melissa swept across Jamaica, they carried more than rain and ruin. They carried a force that changed our stories. Stories held in weathered beams, in the faded pastel walls of seaside cottages, in the quiet geometry of verandahs that once framed laughter, conversation, and afternoon light would be forever changed. As we begin to take stock of what has changed, we also find ourselves rediscovering what endures — the architectural soul of a nation that refuses to be washed away.

This inaugural issue of Spaces Edit arrives not as we first envisioned a celebration of new design and innovation, but as a meditation on stillness, memory, and belonging. Across the western parishes, from Negril’s once-sleepy coves to Hanover’s colonial relics and the modest board houses that defined small-town life, the hurricane left visible scars. Yet, amid the debris and silence, there is an unmistakable grace. A doorframe left standing. A fretwork shadow cast across broken stone. A mango tree bending toward the sea, still rooted.

These fragments remind us that architecture is not only about what we build, it is about what we carry.

In this special edition, Evolution of Spaces becomes a love letter to Jamaica’s built heritage and the people who give it life. We document what remains, not to mourn, but to preserve. To acknowledge the artistry embedded in limestone walls and hand-carved shutters, the rhythm of forms shaped by weather, time, and imagination. This is not a story of loss alone; it is a story of resilience of a country learning to hold on gently while envisioning what comes next.

As recovery begins, we hope this issue serves as both a record and a reflection: a moment to pause before rebuilding, to see the beauty that persists even in fragility. Jamaica’s spaces have always told our story. Today, they whisper of endurance; of holding on to what remains, and remembering that even in ruin, there is design, there is spirit, and there is home.

A STORY OF LIGHT AND RENEWAL IN TREASURE BEACH

Perched along the windswept edge of Treasure Beach, this once tranquil sanctuary bore the full force of Hurricane Melissa’s rage. Yet, amid the silence that followed, something deeper endured; the essence of place, memory, and meaning.

Shakti Home was never just a villa. It was a story told through texture and light, the patina of aged wood, the rhythm of waves echoing against coral stone, the golden hush of morning sunlight pouring through open shutters. It was a place that invited stillness, that reminded its guests to exhale, to listen, to be.

In the storm’s aftermath, the familiar lines of that beauty were blurred, verandas stripped bare, walls marked by salt and wind, gardens once lush now quiet and tender. But even as the physical structure was wounded, its spirit remained intact. You can still feel it in the way the breeze moves through the broken lattice, in the way light falls on the weathered tile.

Before the hurricane, Shakti Home stood as an ode to coastal simplicity: open, warm, and rooted in local craft. Built from honest materials and framed by the gentle austerity of Jamaica’s south coast, it carried a quiet confidence that only places shaped by hand and heart can hold. Now, it stands as a testament to endurance.

When the winds quieted and the sea retreated, what remained at Shakti Home was more than stone and timber; it was spirit.

Restoration has begun, not as a race toward perfection, but as an act of reverence. Each board repaired, each stone reset, feels like a prayer, a promise that beauty, once anchored, can bend but not break.

In Treasure Beach, rebuilding is never just about architecture. It’s about people, the carpenters who return with salvaged wood, the mason who remembers each curve of the veranda, the neighbor who brings meals to the crew at dusk. Through these gestures, Shakti Home’s rebirth becomes a collective effort, a living symbol of the community’s resilience. Every nail driven, every plant replanted, is a small defiance against despair. It’s proof that renewal, like light, always finds a way back in. “Every hand that rebuilds Shakti Home is part of something larger, the restoration of community.”

Few places in Jamaica capture the soul of simplicity quite like Treasure Beach. Known for its warm people and unspoiled coastline, it’s a community built on connection, where fishermen share stories under almond trees and strangers become family over shared meals. Hurricane Melissa may have tested its resilience, but Treasure Beach’s heartbeat remains steady. It’s people continue to stand in grace, bound by a collective strength that turns loss into purpose.

“On behalf of the Treasure Beach community, my overarching message is that when you give love, you receive love,” shares Sharon Feanny, beloved owner of Shakti Home. “Treasure Beach is known for being a loving, kind, and caring community, not just to visitors and those who rent our villas, but to each other. When you live in a state of loving kindness, that love comes back to you, especially in times of crisis. When Hurricane Beryl struck last year and Hurricane Melissa this year, what we saw was that same love returning to us in abundance. Treasure Beach is so blessed because it truly is a community that gives from the heart, and in doing so, receives so much love in return. That’s a lesson we can all carry, not only in difficult times but in our daily lives. We bought Shakti Home 18 years ago, in January 2008, and since then I’ve witnessed again and again how this place and its people embody the pure spirit of love in action.”

What the storm could not wash away was the soul of this place.

As restoration continues, the hope for Shakti Home and for Treasure Beach is not simply to rebuild what was lost, but to renew what remains. Plans are underway to restore the property with the same care and craftsmanship that once defined it, ensuring that future guests will again experience the quiet magic that made this retreat so special. Those wishing to support the rebuilding of Treasure Beach can do so through local community initiatives and relief funds. Donations go directly toward restoring homes, schools, and small businesses across the parish, ensuring that recovery touches not just structures, but lives.

In the soft light of morning, Shakti Home still glows. Its shutters may be scarred, its walls may whisper of wind and water, but its essence endures. Because true beauty, like true community, is never erased. It simply transforms.

Home Holidays for the

The Home for the Holidays initiative holds a special place in our hearts. Born from the belief that everyone deserves a place to call home, it’s about more than design, it’s about dignity, comfort, and belonging.

At Spaces, we’ve always believed that good design can change lives. Homeownership provides stability, security, and a sense of purpose, values that resonate deeply with our founder, Janelle Pantry-Coke, a mother of two. “Every child deserves the foundation that a safe and nurturing home provides,” she shares.

BUILDING HOPE,

ONE HOME AT A TIME

Through Home for the Holidays, Spaces turns compassion into action, helping families in need transition from uncertainty to ownership. The project reflects our ongoing commitment to community, creating spaces that inspire hope and a brighter future.

THE ONE DESIGN SECRET

EVERY CLIENT SHOULD KNOW

If I could share one design secret with every client, it’s this, texture is just as important as colour. Layer wood, rattan, linen, jute, and greenery, and even the simplest palette will come alive

Great design starts with intention, not things. Before choosing a sofa, a paint colour, or a décor piece, the most important step is to understand how you want the space to feel and function. When you get clear on the purpose; whether it’s calm, energetic, family-friendly, luxurious, or minimalist, every design decision becomes easier and more cohesive.

Lee-Anne Jones

INTERIOR DESIGNER/ JUNIOR ARCHITECT

Not every empty corner or surface needs to be filled. Empty space isn’t wasted space, it is a design tool that gives your eyes a place to rest and lets the key pieces stand out . Clutter makes a space feel chaotic, while empty spaces make it feel calm and intentional. Before adding a piece to any room, think is it adding meaning, function or beauty? Or am I just filling the space?

Behind the Design

A MODERN SANCTUARY

Every renovation tells a story — one of transformation, intention, and the quiet power of design to enhance daily living. This bathroom renovation was no different. What began as a functional update evolved into the creation of a serene, modern sanctuary — a space that feels both indulgent and deeply personal.

How thoughtful design transformed a dated bathroom into a timeless retreat.

From the start, the goal was clear: to design a bathroom that blends warmth, texture, and light in a way that feels restorative, with “good bones”. Guided by a philosophy that beauty and practicality must coexist, the Spaces design team set out to re-imagine the bathroom as a place of calm, balance, and enduring elegance.

The Inspiration

The inspiration for this bathroom stemmed from a desire to create a space that feels like an everyday escape — spa-like but never sterile.

Soft neutrals, layered textures, and timeless finishes became the foundation of the design. The curved mirrors and warm wood cabinetry bring an organic softness, while the brass fixtures add just the right touch of understated luxury. The result is a space that feels welcoming from the moment you walk in — light-filled, harmonious, and effortlessly modern.

Materiality and Function

Choosing the right materials was key to achieving both style and function. Natural wood tones ground the space, adding warmth and depth to the neutral palette. Matte gold fixtures from the

faucet to the mirror frame introduce subtle sophistication without overwhelming the space. The textured tile walls and herringbone shower design play with light and dimension, giving the room visual interest while maintaining its minimalist sensibility.

Every element was chosen not just for beauty, but for durability and comfort — ensuring the bathroom is as practical as it is beautiful.

Design Challenges

Home renovations are definitely not for the faint of the heart. Like any renovation, this project came with its share of challenges — the biggest being reconfiguring the layout in the primary bathroom to improve flow and create a focal point.

Strategic adjustments, such as repositioning the bath and expanding the shower, created better proportions and sightlines. Another focus was maintaining warmth in a space dominated by hard surfaces; this was achieved through tonal layering, wood textures, and thoughtful lighting that casts a soft, flattering glow.

Reflecting the Homeowner

At its heart, great design should always reflect the people who live within it.

This bathroom captures the homeowner’s love for clean lines, timeless design, and quiet luxury. It’s a space designed for unhurried mornings and reflective evenings — where every element, from the soft lighting to the handcrafted vanity, works together to create a sense of peace and belonging.

Design Advice

When asked what advice she’d offer to anyone planning their own bathroom remodel, Spaces founder and creative director Janelle PantryCoke shares:

“Start

with how you want the space to make you feel. Every decision — from tile to tap — should support that emotion. Don’t chase trends; invest in quality and in design that feels authentic to you.”

Her words reflect the very ethos behind this transformation: design with intention, balance form and function, and create a space that celebrates the simple beauty of living well.

Curating Jamaica

HOW TO LIVE BEAUTIFULLY WITH LOCAL ART

A well-lived home tells a story — one shaped not just by its furniture or finishes, but by the art that adorns its walls.

In Jamaica, that story runs deep. From the expressive brushstrokes of Alexander Cooper to the vibrant scenes of Pottinger and the soulful figures of Lancelot Ferron, our art captures something timeless; a visual heartbeat of the island itself. Carefully chosen pieces by these artists adorn the elegant home of seasoned collector Alison Taffe who

says her collection is "a reflection of the art that surrounded my home as a child, my own evolving style and an enduring love for the feminine in art".

To live with Jamaican art is to live with memory, colour, and rhythm. It’s to bring the spirit of our people, our stories, and our shared humanity into everyday spaces.

Art as Identity

Every piece of Jamaican art carries a piece of the nation’s soul; stories of resilience, joy, and community. Hanging a Pottinger is more than decoration; it’s preservation. A piece by Cooper doesn’t simply watch over a room, it roots it in history and emotion.

When curating Jamaican art, the goal isn’t perfection, it’s authenticity. A wall of mismatched frames can feel just as powerful as a single, commanding canvas. What matters most is connection. Choose art that moves you, that tells a story, or that sparks conversation.

Designing with Art in Mind

Incorporating art into a modern interior is about balance. Let bold pieces breathe by pairing them with neutral walls and natural materials. A vibrant painting, framed in wood or gold, can warm a minimalist space, while smaller works clustered together can create intimacy in unexpected corners; a hallway, a reading nook, a stairwell.

Think of art not as an afterthought, but as an anchor. Build your palette around it. Allow its tones, energy, and emotion to influence your furnishings; a coral accent cushion echoing a brushstroke, or a woven texture inspired by a landscape painting.

The Modern Collector

You don’t have to be a formal collector to curate with intention. Sharpen your curator's eye by

visiting local galleries, supporting emerging artists, and exploring Jamaica’s art fairs and cultural markets. The National Gallery and the Edna Manley College of Visual & Performing Arts' Final Year Student exhibition are great places to start.

Even small prints or sketches can add depth and narrative to your home. The goal is to live with art that feels personal; pieces that tell your story while honoring the hands that created them.

If you have the opportunity, also be sure to spend time speaking with the artists themselves. This will give you a fuller, richer understanding of the piece you're taking home, and equip you to

have informed conversations when guests ask about your collection!

Living Beautifully, Authentically

In a world of fast trends, Jamaican art reminds us to slow down, to savor craftsmanship, to celebrate culture, to live beautifully and meaningfully. A home filled with local art becomes more than a space; it becomes a living archive of creativity pride and self-expression. Because when we choose to surround ourselves with the work of our artists, we’re not just curating Jamaica, we’re curating ourselves.

Entertaining Holiday 101

The holiday season is the time of year filled with entertaining, parties and social gatherings. Whether planning a small, intimate gathering or a large family affair, it is often the host's attention to detail that impresses guests the most.

Creating a festive atmosphere, planning and preparing delicious dishes will ensure guests have a memorable experience. Anyone can host a dinner party, but it takes planning and the right people on speed dial to host a memorable event.

This holiday season, follow these simple tips, guaranteed to delight guests and simplify holiday entertaining. There are three keys to successfully hosting an event that will have guests RSVPing for your next one even before you start planning it. Firstly, assemble your guest list and select the right mix of people who are sure to be engaging.

Secondly, curate a tantalizing menu. And last and by no means least…ensure that the décor and ambience evoke the right notes.

We all may not be Iron Chefs in the kitchen who can create the most complex of meals. So, if you’re no master chef, knowing which caterer to call is essential.

And the same goes when it comes to décor. For those who can certainly help themselves, Spaces has all the right essentials for the perfect holiday dinner. And if you so happen not to fall into the DIY category, make sure to book your event decorator in advance so as not to be left scrambling at the last minute.

FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The holiday season is fast approaching, and for Christmas lovers, it can’t come soon enough! These days, the season stretches from the weeks leading up to Christmas Day through to New Year’s Day — a time when friends and family gather, laughter fills the air, and homes become the heart of celebration.

UPDATE YOUR INTERIOR DÉCOR

Think About Your Theme and Colour Scheme

Start by choosing a theme that reflects your personality — whether it’s classic and nostalgic, modern and chic, or whimsical and playful. Once you’ve chosen your look, select a complementary colour palette.

Traditional reds and greens create timeless warmth, golds and silvers add elegance, while cool blues and whites evoke winter serenity.

Focus on key gathering areas such as the living and dining rooms. Layer Christmas-themed pillows in rich fabrics, mix solids with decorative prints, and drape throws in coordinating tones. Let your Christmas tree echo your overall theme for a cohesive, designer-inspired feel.

Don’t Forget the Small Touches

Extend the holiday spirit throughout your home with small, thoughtful details. Swap out everyday dish towels for festive ones, light scented candles, and display glass bowls filled with ornaments or pinecones. Add layers of texture and colour to make every room feel warm and intentional.

PLAN AHEAD FOR A STRESSFREE SEASON

The holidays can sneak up quickly, so start early to keep things joyful instead of rushed. November is an excellent time to upgrade décor or make larger purchases — many retailers, including Spaces, offer preseason specials that make it easier to refresh your home beautifully and affordably.

Complete Major Projects Early

If you’re planning bigger updates — a new sofa, custom drapery, or painting project — aim to complete them before December. That way, you can truly enjoy the season without last-minute stress.

ENJOY THE PROCESS

Above all, remember that holiday decorating should be fun. Play your favourite carols, light a candle, and make it a family affair. Get the kids involved and create

traditions they’ll remember; from hanging ornaments to setting the table for Christmas dinner.

“The perfect holiday décor isn’t about perfection at all — it’s about creating joy for the people you love most.”

So start early, savour every moment, and transform your home into a space that celebrates warmth, love, and the true spirit of the holidays.
