CEO WELCOME

This past year has been one of development and change. Following the pandemic, we have found ourselves in the middle of another crisis caused by the rising cost of living.

As a charity, I am proud of how we have continued supporting our communities, from free meals for all children in the school holidays to expanding our support for older people and much more. The future looks no less challenging, but as an organisation, we are ready and willing to continue our work with respect, integrity and creativity.

I hope you enjoy reading this report and seeing how our many projects come together to provide whole family support. Perhaps one of the best examples is Night, one of our most recent employees who came to us to learn about hospitality work in Scotland and to improve his English skills. His story is an excellent example of our joined-up work; you can read about Night on page 18 of this report.

Youth Befriending:

Youth Befriending supports children aged 5-16 with specific challenges within their home life. We provide children and young people with a volunteer befriender for 2-3 hours per week, encouraging them to explore new activities and find new interests & hobbies.

Big Hearts Befriending:

Our partnership with Big Hearts supports children and young people in kinship care or socially isolated with a befriender.

Kinship Care is where a child has been removed from Mum or Dad and now lives with grandparents or a family member.

Youth Counseling:

Youth Counselling: Our counselling offers young people ages 5 to 18 a minimum of 8 weekly individual Art Therapy sessions in schools or our Community Hub. Young people may choose to use drawing, painting, using clay, talking, playing, or telling stories to address difficulties and feelings they may be experiencing.

Bookbug:

Bookbug: Our sessions are designed for local parents and carers with babies and toddlers as a place to help build their social skills and support their speech and language development with stories, rhymes and song. We provide crèche time after our sessions.

PHEW:

Peoples’ Health and Emotional Wellbeing (PHEW) offers young people ages 18 to 24 (26 if care experienced) a safe and friendly space to connect with others and better understand mental health and wellbeing. The PHEW group runs co-designed recreational and education activities to promote improved emotional wellbeing.

What Befriending Means To Me I have been befriending with Space for over 10 years now!

Hard to believe as that is the age of my current befriendee!

So, what has it meant to me? Nearly always a positive experience. It is fun to get to do a whole range of activities I would not normally do – trampolining, pantomime, skateboard park, free cinema and cartwheels on the beach!

More importantly, it can be hugely rewarding to get that beaming smile and burst of laughter when you connect. I have seen confidence grow as we share positive experiences over the simplest things. One befriendee initially took to lying on the pavement to get attention. He quickly realised, “This is not going to work, is it?” From then on, it was fun all the way (mostly).

I think the important qualities are to listen (with eyes and ears), be consistent, reliable and share the activities you do together – keep a diary/photobook and foster a positive relationship with parents.

“It’s not always plain sailing but pushing through not so good times are part of life and getting to a positive (as possible) outcome is worth it.”

Befriending is hugely rewarding seeing self-esteem grow and getting that daffodil picked just warms the heart.

Carers Support:

Crossing all ages, this is one of our most extensive areas of work; we support young carers from age 5 upwards. Many, especially young children, have caring responsibilities thrust upon them, which considerably impact their lives, limiting options at school and socially. From ages 16-25, we have our Young Adult Carers, set up by Space in response to group feedback that carers between these ages were struggling to engage with adult groups due to a lack of shared interests.

We also run Adult carers for those over 25, with short breaks such as bowling or visits to the zoo and residential stays in the highlands, rock climbing and sliding down cold streams.

Young Carers (5-16):

We offer short breaks, to give young carers respite from their caring role at home. Short breaks include a range of different indoor and outdoor activities.

Young Adult Carers (16-25):

We provide one-to-one personalised support for a wide range of issues affecting Young Adult Carers (YAC), including support around food poverty and fuel poverty, advocacy for caring issues, residential short break opportunities, and support to YACs in further education.

Community Café:

Visit us for nutritious, handmade food from our training kitchen. We also provide external event catering, covering everything from traditional soup and sandwiches to threecourse dining experiences and everything in between – try us.

Catering & hospitality employability:

Space Station provides foundation catering training, work placements, qualifications and support to move into a positive progression like paid work, college or volunteering.

Community Garden 15

Beacon Club:

Offers daycare to older people in the Southeast/Southwest of Edinburgh. Our members include people who are lonely or isolated and those with mild cognitive impairment to mild/ moderate dementia. All the groups are friendly and close, offering 10 places per day.

Vintage Vibes (In partnership with LifeCare Edinburgh):

Tackles isolation and loneliness in over 60s across Edinburgh through friendship. With our 1:1 friendships, groups and events, we offer support, companionship and the opportunity to be more socially connected.

Wellbeing Together:

Space is the lead partner and works alongside SAMH, Big Hearts and WithKids to provide children and young people aged 5-26 years and their parents access to mental health and wellbeing support.

Thrive is run in partnership with NHS Lothian and SAMH; peer workers provide practical and emotional support to people struggling with adverse mental health in their day-to-day lives.

The team work closely with health professionals to find and provide appropriate support.

Community Link Workers:

CLWs are based in GP surgeries and help people identify services, organisations, groups and activities that may help their health and wellbeing. CLWs can chat about anything non-medical and use social prescribing to help patients have more control over their lives and the things that matter to them.

Passionate about Pizza Lap Yan Lau (aka Night)

Night moved to Scotland in January 2022 from Hong Kong, where he had been a successful hairdresser owning his own salon, ‘J.C. Zone’ or Japanese Culture Zone, a reflection of Night’s love of Japanese fashion, styles and even anime/ manga cartoons and comics.

18 Employability Story

Having come to Scotland, Night wanted to find work and discovered our training academy. The Space Station course, which provides a 10-week grounding in catering and hospitality, appealed, so Night signed up. As part of the course, Night received training in food preparation, food hygiene, barista skills, and health and safety.

The course approach is deliberately light-hearted and creates a supportive atmosphere. It is not uncommon for the participants to gain a whole new group of friends by the end of the course on top of the new skills they have developed.

Following the Space Station course, Night accepted a traineeship in our Café kitchen before becoming a sessional worker for our Outta Space Pizza social enterprise, supporting outside catering for external events.

Night is as passionate about pizza as he was about hairstyles and creates some real mouth-watering slices of perfection. Being able to get out and interact with different people, as well as working in our busy kitchen, is helping Night develop his language skills. Although his English is excellent, he is so polite he constantly apologises for it!
