PUBLISHER’S NOTE

THE FUTURE OF HEALTH CARE IS HERE

No sector of the economy impacts our life like health care, and none is experiencing more innovation and global competition. The consulting and research firm, Deloitte, released their 2019 outlook, which began by saying, “What goes up, must come down. However, this doesn’t apply to the health care industry, which will top $10 trillion globally by 2022."

Here are the top 6 predictions: 1. New care delivery models will be used to improve access and affordability. Moving from volume to value will require building an outcomes-based financial model and data infrastructure

to maximize value-based care (VBC) reimbursement pathways, which will likely be fundamental to many health systems’ sustainable growth.

and well-being are driving shortages of appropriately skilled health care staff in both developed and developing economies.

new innovation hub for global drug and device advancements . Historically, the medical innovation pipeline has flowed from West to East, this year could be a tipping point where the flow reverses.

There’s been an exponential increase in the pace and scale with which digital health care innovations are emerging. Digital technologies are supporting health systems’ efforts to transition to new models of patient-centered care and are helping them develop “smart health” approaches to increase access and affordability, improve quality and lower costs.

3. There will be a push to maintain regulatory compliance and cyber security.

6. Innovative private insurance models will shake up the health care payer industry. To ensure future growth globally, a number of insurance companies are already providing data and digital-driven health care services to their policyholders to personalize the experience and reduce the cost from potential claims.

As data is becoming the new health care currency, protecting it will be key.

4. Recruiting, developing and retaining top talent is paramount. An aging workforce, rising demand for health care services, concerns for morale

“ONE MUST HAVE A

For Justin Connors of Connors Wealth Management, helping clients be reasonable and optimistic about their future is what he has dedicated his life to. “What people are seeking is peace of mind. We all want to be optimistic about our future. For some, however, that optimism is based on wishful thinking or simply a positive disposition. But a positive disposition alone will not carry you to your destination; rather, it is an alignment of your plans and actions that will get you to the target you are optimistically hoping to hit. This is where optimism must intersect with reasonableness.

A NEW HOME FOR YOUR BEST SELF, DERMATOLOGY & PLASTIC SURGERY [ By Eric Wright, Publisher ] Drs. Anita Saluja and Rebecca Nova have a professional and clinical synergy that few medical partnerships enjoy. Saluja, one of the most respected and innovative dermatologists in the region, and Nova, a celebrated plastic and reconstructive surgeon, combine their talents to bring a wide range of services and products to their ever-growing ensemble of patients. With a practice that focuses on head-to-toe anti-aging, along with skin cancer detection and treatment, they attract patients from the beaches to Viera and Melbourne. As their practice expanded, they searched for a centralized location and found it in Brevard Medical City. The new location, on Wickham Road in Suntree, provides proximity to major crossroads, such as Pineda Causeway and Interstate 95, along with added visibility.

In addition, since many visits may involve medical procedures, the location has convenient entrances at the back of their facility, allowing for privacy. “We listened to our patients; their experience and results are our primary focus,” said Saluja. “We were seeking increased privacy, less time spent in a busy waiting room and a beautiful, fresh, modern, stateof-the-art space.” Creating A Perfect Setting If designing a place where patients would feel confident and comfortable in making transformational decisions was the goal, Saluja and Nova hit the target. The design is modern, but warm and visually engaging. To provide privacy for patients who are getting consultations and services that are often personal and elective, For Your Best Self gave special attention

WHERE THE BUSINESS OF HEALTH CARE IS MOVING McKesson is one of the largest companies in the U.S., with revenues topping $208 Billion in 2018, along with being the 6th highest revenue generator in America. Well known within the medical industry, they distribute pharmaceuticals and provide health information technology, medical supplies and care management tools. In 2018 they produced an insightful report identifying trends and some areas of concern about the state of healthcare in the U.S. Here are some of their findings.

Emergency Care Nearly 50% of all hospital care is delivered to patients through the emergency department. Of the more than 3.5 billion patient visits to hospitals during a 15-year period, 47.7 percent of care was delivered through the hospital emergency room, according to a study published in the International Journal of Health Services. From 1996 through 2010, there were more than 3.5 billion hospital-patient care episodes, reported the researchers. Of those episodes, 47.7 percent occurred in the emergency room, 37.6 percent were outpatient visits and 14.8 percent were inpatient admissions. That distribution changed little over the entire 15-year period. Only slightly more than 3% of emergency department visits are “avoidable” Given the volume of hospital care delivered through the emergency room, the question is how much of it is necessary. According to researchers, the answer is “most.” Studying 115,081 medical records representing 424 million ED visits from 2005 through 2011, the researchers said 3.3 percent of the visits met their definition of “avoidable.” The top five patient complaints that led to an avoidable trip to the emergency room were toothache, back pain, headache, sore throat or a symptom related to mental illness. The researchers recommended expanding access to mental health and dental care as a possible solution.

Emergency Care Clinical Decision Support Physicians say more than 20% of medical care is unnecessary The consensus of 2,106 surveyed doctors is that 20.6 percent of overall medical care provided to patients is unnecessary. Of the specific types of medical care provided to patients,

8 : SPACE C OAST B US I N E SS

|

SPAC E C OAST BU S INES S .CO M

FEATURE 24.9 percent of diagnostic tests, 22 percent of prescription medications and 11.1 percent of medical procedures are unnecessary, the doctors said. The physicians cited malpractice concerns, pressure or requests from patients and difficulty accessing patients’ medical records as the top three reasons for overtreatment of patients. The top three remedies, according to the doctors, are training medical residents on clinical treatment appropriateness criteria, improving access to patients’ medical records and developing additional practice guidelines. Physician awareness of Choosing Wisely, a 5-year-old initiative to reduce unnecessary medical care, has yet to rise to a level that’s having an industry-wide impact. Only 25 percent of 600 doctors surveyed this year said they knew about Choosing Wisely.

Hospitals and Health System Nearly 70% of hospitals are part of health systems The independent, standalone hospital is a rarity, 69.7 percent of all U.S. hospitals were part of health systems at the end of 2016. In fact, the top 5 percent of all health systems each operated 18 or more hospitals and had 2,500 doctors or more each on staff. Of all the primary-care physicians in the U.S., 42.7 percent were affiliated with health systems, according to AHRQ’s Compendium of U.S. Health Systems. The report also said 91.6 percent of all hospital discharges in 2016 were from system-based hospitals. On the other end of the spectrum, more than half of the 626 systems in operation ran just one or two hospitals and had fewer than 250 physicians on staff, AHRQ said. Hospitals and health systems spend nearly $39 billion each year to comply with federal regulations Hospitals, health systems and post-acute care providers spend $38.6 billion each year to comply with federal regulations in nine areas, according to a report from the American Hospital Association. The AHA’s report, Regulatory Overload: Assessing the Regulatory Burden on Health Systems, Hospitals and Post-Acute Care Providers concluded, “Some of these rules do not improve care, and all of them raise costs.”

Long-Term Care Hospitals with preferred long-term care networks benefit from faster declines in readmission rates Researchers compared readmission rates of 16 hospitals in eight U.S. markets. Four hospitals in two markets had built formal networks of preferred skilled-nursing facilities (SNFs) to which they steered patients who needed long-term care. The study credited the faster decline in readmission rates to enhanced care coordination and to using data to measure the clinical performance of SNFs in preferred networks.

Committed to the Space Coast GrayRobinson’s Melbourne Office By Sebastian Northside In January of 1990, two decades after the company’s establishment, GrayRobinson merged with the Brevard County-based law firm, Kirschenbaum and Peeples, establishing the firm’s presence on Florida’s Space Coast. Subsequently, in 1996, GrayRobinson moved its Brevard County headquarters to Melbourne, merging with the Melbourne firm, Nohrr & Nohrr. These expansions pioneered the way for GrayRobinson’s presence throughout the nation, now boasting 14 offices in Florida and one in Washington, D.C. Since then, the GrayRobinson Melbourne office has continued to lay down roots in the community, establishing itself as one of the largest fullservice law firms in Brevard County. The 21 attorneys of the Melbourne office offer many years of experience in practice areas including, but not limited to, litigation, probate, corporate, real estate, taxation, estate planning, trusts, maritime, wealth transfer and elder law. The GrayRobinson Melbourne office is involved in organizations such as the Space Coast Health Foundation, LEAD Brevard, American Heart Association, Keep Brevard Beautiful, Brevard Cultural Alliance, Cape Canaveral

Hospital Foundation, Brevard County Estate Planning Council, Melbourne International Airport Authority and Brevard Schools Foundation. The firm’s participation in these organizations attests to its focus on going beyond clients and into the well-being of the community. In addition to outside involvement, GrayRobinson continues its commitment to the Space Coast community at all levels, through their youngest attorneys and new leadership to their longstanding partners. Their growth as a firm reflect dedication to the economic development of Brevard County, stemming from their deep history in the area. Meet Some of the Team Shareholder and litigation attorney Amanda Smith has a long history with and dedication to Brevard County. Along with her general civil litigation practice, focusing on guardianships, trust and probate litigation, she’s served as a board member for the Community Foundation in Brevard since 2014, also serving as secretary since 2016. Smith is also involved in the Cocoa

In 2014, she graduated from LEAD Brevard and since 2015, she has been a volunteer for Junior Achievement of the Space Coast. Shareholder Adam Bird’s practice matches that of his civic experience: well-versed and varied. He has experience in many general litigation matters, but focuses on corporate and commercial litigation, including contract disputes, real property and real estate litigation, residential and commercial landlordtenant matters, labor and employment issues and other legal matters facing both individuals and business organizations. His civic endeavors include being a member of the board for the Space Coast Health Foundation and LEAD Brevard. In the past, Bird served as treasurer for 2-1-1 Brevard, legal advisor for the South Brevard Sharing Center and graduated from Leadership Brevard in 2011. Attorney and CPA Brad White is another shareholder in GrayRobinson’s Melbourne office who shows versatility through his practice and commitment to the community. White has significant experience representing clients involved in complex business transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, dispositions, recapitalizations, reorganizations, investments and joint ventures. He is currently a member of the Melbourne Regional Chamber of East Central Florida and serves on the board of directors for the Economic Development Commission of Florida's Space Coast. GrayRobinson’s newest additions include litigation attorney, Paul E. Parrish, and real estate attorney, Michael Schneider, both shareholders. Parrish, a former partner at Quarles & Brady, LLP, brings decades of insurance and maritime litigation experience to GrayRobinson. As a veteran commercial litigator, Parrish has acted as trial counsel in state and federal courts in litigation arising under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 (ERISA), including litigation concerning pension benefits, health and disability benefits and breach of fiduciary duty claims. Schneider further solidified the firm’s real estate practice, joining with more than 20 years of experience handling real estate closings in Florida. His practice focuses on structuring real estate holdings and navigating real estate transactions. The most recent alteration to Melbourne’s office structure was the transition of Erik Shuman as the office’s managing director in Q3 of 2018. Along with the office’s management responsibilities, he maintains a successful estate planning and elder law practice.

Brevard Health Alliance

Improving the health status of the medically underserved by providing extraordinary service.

[ By Lorin Vargas ]

In 1992, Holmes Regional Medical Center created project HOPE (Health Outreach Prevention and Education) to provide follow-up services to uninsured patients following emergency department visits. The first clinic, at University Park Elementary School in Melbourne, opened in 1994 with a group of volunteer physicians and nurse practitioners from HRMC.

A Medical Partnership In 2004, recognizing a significant opportunity to expand services to the community, project HOPE applied to HRSA (Health Resources and Services Administration) to become a Federally Qualified Health Center. Project HOPE was supported by a community stakeholders group and Health First leadership. Upon receiving approval, HOPE became The Brevard Health Alliance, Inc. (BHA), receiving significant federal funding and enhanced Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement rates.

Each of these benefits was designed to enable BHA to significantly expand health services to Brevard County’s uninsured and underinsured citizens. In late 2005, BHA assumed operations of the Wuesthoff Wellness Clinic, then a not-for-profit organization, and expanded BHA services into Central Brevard County. In late summer of 2010, BHA assumed the operations of the Parrish Medical Center Community Medical Clinic, receiving substantial, continued financial support and substantial free diagnostic support from Parrish Medical

Center. Through the support of Parrish Medical Center, this acquisition allowed BHA to complete a key objective of offering services throughout Brevard County. The leadership of both Parrish Medical Center and Wuesthoff recognized the potential of a private-public partnership to leverage their investment in community health improvements.

BHA’s Differentiator No one is turned away due to an inability to pay, and this is what truly sets the BHA clinics apart from other health services. The mission of BHA is to improve the health status of Brevard County’s medically underserved populations by providing extraordinary quality of service and care in the areas of primary health care, dental health care, mental health care, preventive services, and educational services.

Brevard Health Alliance also features mobile units, which deliver services to citizens at numerous locations throughout Brevard County. Currently, they provide health care services for about 2,500 Brevard County citizens that present as homeless. The portable units run Monday through Friday, and times vary upon location. A calendar for each month is provided on their website and via social media accounts. No appointment necessary – the mobile vehicles deliver on a first come, first served basis. Brevard Health Alliance began operations on March 7, 2005 with 16 associates and a desire to improve the health of the medically underserved population of Brevard County. Today, they employ 275 associates and have registered approximately 101,000 patients. Since beginning, they have opened six medical clinics across the county and provided medical, dental or behavioral health services to more than 101,000 individual Brevard County citizens. The clinic has also provided more than

GIVING BACK HEALTH FIRST INITIATIVES IMPROVE THE WELLNESS AND HEALTH OF BREVARD [ By Eric Wright, Publisher ]

The numbers are quite staggering. Though Health First is known in the area for its world-class hospitals and clinicians, fitness and rehabilitation centers and various medical clinics, few know how much the health care and insurance provider invests back in community support. It totaled over $171 million in fiscal year 2018, which includes charity and uncompensated care. When it comes to ensuring health care is accessible to all of Brevard’s residents, the life-saving and lifechanging impact of Health First is far more about deeds than words.

Michael Seeley, President of the Health First Foundation.

Careful Aim to Ensure Measurable Outcomes With the same thoughtful preparation and foresight that goes into medical treatment, Health First, a Brevardbased not-for-profit organization, does an in-depth Community Health Needs Assessment (CHNA) in collaboration with the Space Coast Health Foundation. The CHNA provides a comprehensive analysis of widely-accepted health indicators that identify health disparities for each demographic area served by their respective facilities. This data serves as the foundation for developing implementation strategies that often include partnerships with community organizations in creating initiatives to address health needs. Michael Seeley, the president of the Health First Foundation, also oversees the Community Benefit department of Health First. He spoke of his initial foray into the world of healthcare administration in California and how agonizing it was dealing with families who were having to make care decisions based on the ability to pay. “Because of what I saw, we grew our own non-profit

for our 50+ provider practice,” he said. “My fondest memories of that time in my career was what we were able to do for those disadvantaged individuals and families to get the care and services they needed. Years later, when this position opened, it was the easiest decision I’ve ever made. To be around a thoughtfully structured approach to address critical needs and shortfalls is so rewarding.” Investments in community support programs like Who We Play For. This remarkable program began back in 2007 on the goal line of a Cocoa Beach High School soccer field, when 15-year-old student athlete Rafe Maccarone went into sudden cardiac arrest, following a warmup routine before the beginning of practice. The community was shocked when this young man, who passed all his sports physicals, died the next day from heart disease, stricken while playing the sport he loved most. Recognizing the condition was detectable with screening electrocardiograms (EKG), Who We Play For was launched. Health First has been a partner with Who We Play For since 2016,

During that first year, a 17-year-old cheerleader from a local high school suffered and survived sudden cardiac arrest while training for cheer tryouts. The student and her family became champions of the cause to create awareness about sudden cardiac arrest. About a year later, at her high school, her best friend was screened. The EKG revealed a potentially lifethreatening heart condition and she was successfully treated. A few months later, three members of the student’s family were identified with the same, hereditary heart condition.

One of the most impactful programs that Health First partners with is the Brevard Health Alliance (BHA), which is Brevard County’s only Federally Qualified Health Center. Since March of 2005, BHA has provided extensive primary health care services to residents regardless of their ability to pay. By offering services on a sliding-fee scale, BHA services include pediatrics, behavioral health, dental services, diagnostic services, resource management services, medication assistance and specialty referrals to Brevard County’s economically disadvantaged residents.

S PAC E C OAST BUS INES S .CO M

BHA operates seven fixed clinics in Palm Bay, Malabar, Port St. John, Rockledge, Melbourne and Titusville, along with their principal clinic on Sarno Road in Melbourne. BHA also operates Mobile Health Units to provide professional medical and dental care to Brevard’s residents “where they are” – on the streets, in shelters, at soup kitchens and at drop-in centers. According to their website, “We currently provide services to approximately 2,500 Brevard County citizens that present as homeless.”

Top Priorities The Community Health Needs Assessment, (which is available on Health First’s website) identifies the priority areas that Health First will address and the strategies they will use. “The most successful Community Benefit programs around the country identify areas where a tangible difference can be made, and we identified two,” Seeley said. “The first, was access to health care, when it is needed, where it is needed, regardless of the ability to pay. The second was overweight/ obesity, poor nutrition and/or lack of

physical activity and its relationship to chronic diseases, especially at the pediatric level.” The second area of focus has led to a partnership with the Brevard Public Schools, to enhance their physical education programs for middle schools with the purchase of new gym equipment. Health First has also partnered with the United Way of Brevard in supporting the Health First Mayors’ Fitness Challenge for the past three years. This communitywide initiative encourages mayors of Brevard County’s municipalities to get their residents moving and adopt

a healthier lifestyle. This year, there were 2,445 participants and eleven municipalities participating with the City of Cocoa Beach receiving the award for “Most Fit City.” In addition, a Great Weight-off competition for adults was held to recognize the male and female participant losing the largest percentage of their body weight during the competition. The female winner from Palm Bay announced that the Challenge inspired her to start eating more sensibly, resulting in losing 41.8 pounds or 16% of her body weight in just 8 weeks. She JUNE 2019

stated that she is about halfway to her goal and winning this competition has given her an added incentive. To help develop healthy lifestyles a m on g o u r m o s t v ul n e r a b l e communities, Health First supports the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida and The Children’s Hunger Project. disadvantaged neighborhoods, at no or little cost to their families. “At Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida, we believe that every child, regardless of income or life circumstance, should be empowered to excel in school, become good citizens and lead healthy, productive lives,” their website states. Childhood hunger leads to a weaker immune system, difficulty in learning and paying attention in class, along with being able to

behave properly to retain what they learn. In addition, hungry kids are sick more often and have lower academic achievement. In Brevard over 50 percent of students qualify for a reduced-price meal program, and Brevard Public Schools works valiantly to provide both a healthy breakfast and lunch for those who need it. The Children’s Hunger Project is a Brevard-based program that works to see students through the weekend, by providing weekend

meals that students can take home in backpacks. Through Health First’s giving back initiatives and partnerships, these programs and the services are able to impact families and individuals across the county, every day. It helps to level the field in terms of access to essential medical services and not only provides care to the sick, it helps to improve the wellness and health of everyone in Brevard.

Life Care Center of Palm Bay Premier Long-Term Care Facilities [ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ] Headquartered out of Cleveland, Tennessee, the Life Care Centers of America operates more than 200 skilled nursing, rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s and senior living campuses in 28 states. In our area, the campus is located near the heart of Palm Bay, between Palm Bay Hospital and the offices of Brevard County’s largest physician group — an ideal location for their rehabilitation and skilled nursing facilities. The Palm Bay location was constructed in 2004 with the community’s future growth in mind. The expanding population foreshadowed the continuing need for senior care services. The Life Care Center of Palm Bay is able to fulfill those needs with its premier services. Life Care Center of Palm Bay focuses on inpatient and

outpatient rehabilitation with 24-hour skilled nursing care and state-of-the-art rehabilitation equipment. A highly skilled nursing staff offers a higher acuity of care that aging patients require. Will Tarbet, the executive director of the Palm Bay location, has noticed that the needs of their patients have evolved. “The acuteness and complexities of the patients we serve in this kind of environment evolved because the hospitals are trying to get patients discharged sooner,” says Tarbet. “That acuity trickles down throughout the post-acute field to all these facilities.” The expedited process has caused an increase in the need for additional, specialized care, as well as the readmission of patients; Tarbet and the Life Care staff see the need to help members of the community facing these issues.

The Palm Bay location specializes in the treatment of patients that were hospitalized and need postacute rehabilitation and physical, occupational and speech therapy. “We are a post-acute nursing and rehabilitation provider,” says Tarbet. The center also provides a higher acuity level of care for a multitude of diagnoses with a focus on orthopedic, neurological, cardiac and pulmonary services, all received in a safe environment designed to offer independence and security. In partnership with Health First, Tarbet said the focus is on reduction of patient readmissions to the hospital. Tarbet and the Life Care team work with the community to provide numerous volunteer and partnership efforts. They participated in a water collection drive on World Kindness Day this past year. “In support of World Kindness Day, Life Care Center of Palm Bay selected The Daily Bread, a local non-profit supporting the homeless of Brevard County,” Tarbet said. “This is a great organization that does amazing work locally and this donation will be put to good use. We are extremely proud of our associates who collected 187 cases and 13 gallons, which was the equivalent of 77,511 ounces of water.” The center also actively participates and partners with civic organizations that organize health fairs and health testing in local communities. In addition, the center supports local school activities and youth sports.

Nationwide Medical Licensing Licensing Thousands of Medical Professionals Every Year [ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ] The licensing of medical professionals is essential to ensure your care providers are up to date and qualified to practice in their discipline. The licensing process is often a lengthy and tedious process to undertake. It requires providers to take time away from patients to certify and recertify. This is where Nationwide Medical Licensing comes in to help. Nationwide Medical Licensing specializes in assisting with the administration of medical licensing applications and credentialing procedures. Established in 2007, Nationwide Medical Licensing provides their services all over the country, including a location here in Melbourne, Florida. Business Bureau. Nationwide Medical Licensing operates in all 50 states as well as Puerto Rico and Guam. Their services allow for a professional to relocate and quickly obtain their licenses for practice anywhere in the country. They take the stress out of the licensure process by doing 99% of the administrative work for you, greatly reducing the time it takes to receive your license in any given state. Nationwide Medical Licensing assists in licensing thousands of medical professionals every year, including the fields of MD, DO, PA, DDS, RN, NP, CRNA, LPN, DA, telemedicine and telenursing licensing. They are dedicated to providing a level of unbeatable excellence to the healthcare professionals they assist. Tierra Williams, Chief Operating Officer for the Melbourne Location wants to expand their scope and let health care professionals know that Nationwide Medical Licensing is here to help. “We are trying to get out into the community more to show our presence,” says Williams. In addition to how helpful these services are, Nationwide Medical Licensing also prides themselves on offering exceptional services for a much lower cost than most other medical licensing companies. Plus,

their licensing services are tax deductible. Williams has noticed a large trend of younger professionals applying for licenses. More nurses and doctors are in their younger 30’s due to greater educational opportunities around the country producing more graduates. This is why Nationwide Medical Licensing’s services are so influential. Williams described that many of professionals don’t have the time to undertake the application process. They are tied up with long hours, school, and families. Nationwide Medical Licensing sees the need among this segment of professionals for reliable experts. “We are doing the administrative work and helping to facilitate the processing of the

license applications for those who don’t have the time,” says Williams. The Melbourne Nationwide Medical Licensing location is working to connect with more local Brevard professionals who need their services. Nationwide Medical Licensing is often out in the community volunteering and sponsoring different organizations. They encourage their team to volunteer at least four times a year, with management personnel participating in monthly actions in the community. Nationwide Medical Licensing recently sponsored the Doctors’ Goodwill Foundation, which helps improve the health care system by offering education for both professionals and the general public. Nationwide Medical Licensing also works with different institutions like Keiser University to partner with their medical programs and offer their services. Their contributions in the community truly display their investment in Brevard. For more information, visit nationwidemedicallicensing.com or call 321-622-9030. TITUSVILLE

SANA VIVO

ALTERNATIVE HEALTHY VENDING OPTIONS

[ By Matt Weinstein, Contributor ]

Based out of Titusville, Lorelei and Allan Sprayberry were upset with the diet and eating habits of local children and adults. “I saw how poorly our children eat and what it was doing to their health,” said Lorelei. “We established this company to help pass on better eating habits to not only children, but to adults as well.”

Sprayberrys get mobile report updates when items get vended or issues come up. This makes restocking and maintenance much easier to handle and much more efficient. The machines take cash, credit card, atm card, Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay and just about every major provider.

As a former school teacher under the disciplines of health and physical education, Lorelei taught at Titusville High School for 18 years before retiring this past September to tackle the problem head on. Her husband, Allan, became her partner in the creation and operation of a new company. Allan, a school teacher as well, is currently involved part-time, but plans to join his wife full time upon his retirement from the education system. Their new company, Sana Vivo, provides healthy vending snacks and beverages to businesses, government offices, schools and large companies as a healthy alternative to the traditional snack machine. “People are generally becoming more health conscious,” says Lorelei. As they actively look for healthier snack and drink options in the workplace, Sana Vivo is able to provide employees and customers with the healthy and delicious snacks, drinks and meals that they crave.

“We have something for everybody, and we are really proud of what we do!” Both snack and beverage based, the offerings in a Sana Vivo vending machine include Veggie Straws, Skinny Pop, Chex Mix, a healthier version of beef jerky, Goldfish, protein cookies, fruit snacks, Kind Bars, Cliff Bars, Luna Bars and much more. Their beverages include water, protein drinks, Propel Fitness Water, Bai, and low calorie G2. The available offerings also include items that are GMO free, kosher, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and low-fat. Vending options can also be customized by partners that reserve machines with the company. This healthy alternative for schools and businesses also works to help lower rising healthcare costs and promote a healthier, more productive environment. With snacks and beverages located in one frame, the machines are set up as a dual machine. This makes them very compact and economical to operate. With a footprint similar to that of a small refrigerator, the compact size can still hold over 300 items. These hightech machines also make service much easier. The 30 : SPAC E COAST B U S I N E SS

“We’re really excited about it. We love the products that we sell, and we stand by them. We put our heart and soul into it and do everything we can to make the client happy.” The Sprayberrys are looking to focus on the space industry as they continue to expand in the area. Stemming from their years as educators, they are focused on the school systems to foster better eating habits among children,. They are currently looking to enter Volusia County Schools and then move to Brevard County Schools once Allan retires. “Being a former school teacher, the education system is of high interest to me,” says Lorelei. The Sprayberrys also attend many of the events hosted by the Titusville Chamber. They feel that it helps grow their connection to the community. In addition to a focus in improving the health of individuals, they are also dedicated to helping by volunteering with local organizations. On one occasion, they packed bagged lunch meals for needy children that don’t have meals on the weekends. Through their various efforts, this proactive couple wants to “spread the wealth” of health.

Will the Internet kill magazines? Did instant coffee kill coffee? New technologies change many things, but not everything. You may surf, search, shop and blog online, but you still read magazines. And you’re far from alone.

Readership has actually increased over the past five years. Even the 18-to-34 segment continues to grow. Typical young adults now read more issues per month than their parents. Rather than being displaced by “instant” media, it would seem that magazines are the ideal complement. The explanation, while sometimes drowned out by the Internet drumbeat, is fairly obvious. Magazines do what the Internet doesn’t. Neither obsessed with immediacy nor trapped by the daily news cycle, magazines promote deeper connections. They create relationships. They engage us in ways distinct from digital media. In fact, the immersive power of magazines even extends to the advertising. Magazines remain the number one medium for driving purchase consideration and intent. And that’s essential in every product category. Including coffee.

In advance of hurricane season, consider one or more of the following: Relocate your servers and equipment to a secure, storm rated facility; consider migrating critical data to the cloud; and implement an offsite to cloud backup or server replication strategy.

Protect Your Property

Anchor large furniture to the walls, move valuables away from windows and place sand bags around any areas prone to flooding.

Safely Store Important Documents

Gather any important business documentation, including sensitive employee information, and store in a safe, dry place.

Keep a Preparedness Checklist

Make sure you’re prepared in case of an emergency situation with an evacuation bag; important documents; pictures or video of your business for insurance purposes; and your critical data backed up off site.

Communicate With Your Staff

Establish a communication plan with your staff in case terrestrial networks are down. Encourage them to setup emergency communication solutions, such as satellite phones. Make sure your employees are up-to-date on information concerning their workplace, including operating hours or any special instructions.

Unplug All Electronics

Make sure to unplug all electronics to lower the risk of fire. If possible, move electronics away from flood prone areas. If your servers and data are migrated already, they will not be impacted by powering down.

EXALTING FREEDOM

THROUGH ETHICAL CAPITALISM

AGELESS, EVEN IN THE SPACE AGE By Jeff Piersall & Eric Wright

Examining the ROI on Current Trends In the last century, Western Civilization embraced the idea that traditional morality was entirely relative, based purely on the existential values of the individual. An, “it may not be right for you, but it is right for me” perspective came to be accepted, like it was the law of gravity.

Jeff Piersall

At one point, the prevailing thought was that morals could not be derived from any kind of collective experience or from centuries of trial and error. This is what our nation’s founders referred to as “nature’s law.” Nor could it be based, God-forbid, on revelation (pardon the pun). As a result, the definition of freedom somehow morphed from an ability to be self-governed from within and responsible for one’s life purpose, to more or less, ethical anarchy or at least arbitrary ethics.

Eric Wright

It is funny what happens when these philosophical waves crash against the rocky coast of reality. Much like how the

utopian expectations of liberty, equality and fraternity, that ushered in the French Revolution, soon eroded into the Reign of Terror. But of course, the French experience pales in comparison to the lofty ideals of the 20th century Marxists, which led to genocide and oppression on a scale unheard of in history.

Reality Check But coming out of this low earth orbit perspective and down to the terra-firma where we all live, the consequences of moral relativity, to remarkable individuals like Tiger Woods, are immediately apparent. Woods admitted when his marriage began to unravel, “I thought I was above the laws that govern others.” That honest, self-awareness was one of the reasons I celebrated his brilliant Masters victory at Augusta this year.

What troubles me is how popular culture tends to stone anyone who steps up to say, “There are rights and wrongs that apply to all.” Then, the same group will stone the people who act-out as though there are no “rights or wrongs that apply to all.” The latest victim of this dichotomy is Jeff Bezos. Stefan Aarnio, an author and professional coach, dubbed it the “$35 Billion Zipper.” In case you had not heard, Jeff’s dalliance with a woman he described as, “A really fun dancer,” is costing him his marriage and a whopping $35 Billion divorce settlement. As is the case with most women, or men for that matter, his wife Mackenzie, like Tiger’s wife Elin,

doesn’t appreciate the sophistication of modern trends.

What We Chose and What We Can’t Please don’t get me wrong, I feel for both Jeff Bezos, Tiger Woods and their ex-wives. Marriage is in my opinion, as essential as it is challenging and I empathize with all those who, as Theodore Roosevelt said, “Are actually in the arena.” The point is, though we make our

own moral choices, we cannot choose the consequences of those choices. Therefore, as a

culture, we desperately need to reintroduce the benefits, if not the pleasures, of wise and disciplined behavior, while at the same time heralding the potentially bankrupting return on poor choices. Will Durant, the famous historian once said, “A nation is born a stoic and dies an epicurean.” Certainly, both Tiger, with his Zen like focus on golf perfection and Bezos devotion to building Amazon into a word wide phenomenon would be considered stoic in their early approach. Both however, experienced the ROI of an epicurean lifestyle, no matter how much they or others thought their success put them above typical conventions.

THE "WHY" OF BOARD ORIENTATIONS 8 ESSENTIALS FOR SUCCESSFUL ONBOARDING

Without an effective Board orientation process, how can any individual be prepared to exercise his or her fiduciary duty?

40 : SPAC E C OAST B US I N E SS

Building a successful company takes many years, and the best way to safeguard that hard work is to establish an accomplished and reliable Board of Directors. Experienced business professionals find board spots as an appealing opportunity to share the knowledge they’ve gained throughout a successful career. However, the only way those new Board members can be successful is if they receive a thoughtful orientation process. As you consider what the orientation process might look like for your Board, you should include the following components: 1. A detailed historical narrative outlining the history of the company or organization with particular emphasis on the most recent 3-5-year-period. This narrative should include at a minimum: • Key events that have impacted the health and welfare of the company, such as various strategic initiatives, mergers and |

acquisitions, divestitures, product changes, changes to laws or regulations, etc. • Past corporate governance changes typically captured in corporate by laws. • Financial results that might reflect a pattern of volatility accompanied by an explanation of what contributed to both positive and negative performance. • Explanations of key management and staff changes along with retention statistics and the impact these changes have had on corporate culture, financial results, etc. • Board and staff organization charts including Board committees and roles. 2. An executive summary of: • Strategic plans that are in place and the effectiveness of current strategies. • A review of audited financial statements with explanations of key footnotes. • A review of any regulatory exams with a summary of key recommendations and the company’s progress on implementing

accepted changes 3. In the absence of strategic plans: • An overview of competitors and an assessment of the current competitive environment. • Plans for to maintaining a strong competitive position, or; • Plans to improve the competitive position in the marketplace. 4. The company’s or organization’s funding strategy. 5. Guidelines for Board members outlining how to discharge their responsibility for confidentiality, while fulfilling their responsibilities to various constituents. For example, when is it appropriate to share information with outside parties regarding confidential matters impacting current or future operations of the company or organization? 6. An overview of the CEO evaluation process, performance guidelines for any management incentive plans, the performance expectation for Board members and how the Board is held accountable for its performance. 7. A review of key corporate policies, both Board policies and Management policies which guide the day-to-day activities of the company. Policies typically cover topics such as human resources, budget and finance and compliance. 8. A summary of the corporate culture which typically includes: • A clear mission statement providing direction and meaning. • A sense for the depth of involvement of the organization’s members (participative management). • The organization’s ability to adapt and respond to change. • An understanding of how values and principles are consistently applied. Without an effective Board orientation process similar to the one outlined above, how can any individual be prepared to exercise his or her fiduciary duty? Given the responsibility Board members have accepted to represent various company or organization constituents, you can’t afford for them to be Board members in training! Effective Board governance demands independent thinking and actions in order to ensure the long-term viability of any corporate entity. It takes many years to build a successful company. One individual in a key position without proper oversight can destroy that company or organization in a relatively short period of time. In my judgment, this failure usually traces back to a failure of the Board of Directors to exercise its fiduciary obligation.

HOW TO'S OF DESIGN-BUILD 9 EASY STEPS TO A NEW COMMERCIAL BUILDING

Utilizing the design-build

Your business is expanding or maybe you are just starting out. Either way, you know it’s time for a new building. You want something designed specifically to your needs, but you don’t now where to start. The building process can be daunting; however, if you follow these simple steps, it doesn’t have to be. 1. Determine the size/needs of your project. Write down what you need from the building. These needs include: your special requirements, how many offices will be needed and storage space. Determine whether you will need a conference room or if this will be a manufacturing facility. If so, how large will this space be? Is there anything unique that you will need for this building? Questions like these will help guide you in the right direction.

method ensures that your facility is constructed in a very streamlined and efficient manner.

2. Decide on the site location of your 42 : SPACE C OAST B U SI N E S S

building. Where would you like your new facility to be located? If you are undecided, pick out a few locations that will meet your requirements. Consult a local commercial realtor and search commercial real estate websites like LoopNet and CoStar. 3. Secure your funding. If you don’t have a large pile of cash earmarked for the project, then you will need to meet with your commercial banker to determine how much money is available to you for the project. Ideally, you should meet with a few bankers to determine who will be able to provide you with the best financing package. 4. Interview and secure a designbuilder. Find a competent firm specializing in design-build in your market area. Review their websites and qualifications and then meet with them to discuss your project.

5. Meet with your design-builder. Once you decide on the firm you will partner with on your project, it is important to have a kickoff meeting. At this time, you will further define your project and design requirements. From this meeting, a conceptual design will be formulated.

8. Construction documents. After the engineering is added to the design, the design documents can be brought to 100% completion. After review and acceptance, the project is ready for final pricing and agreement on the final project cost, along with the final project schedule.

6. Design development. Once the conceptual design is accepted, the design can move forward to the next stage, which involves providing the engineering to fill in the design. A preliminary budget can be produced along with a preliminary project schedule.

9. Secure your permits and start building. At plan completion, your design-builder will start the permitting process with the municipal authorities and construction can begin!

7. Secure your property. Now that you know the size and layout of your building, it is time to select and secure your property. You may use your own commercial realtor or one of the realtors that your design-builder uses. The choice is yours. It is also good to use a transaction attorney for purchase of commercial property and project funding.

If you follow these simple steps, your building will be completed in no time! Utilizing the designbuild method ensures that your facility is constructed in a very streamlined and efficient manner with one point of contact and the least number of headaches as possible. All you need to do is watch as your dream becomes a beautiful reality.

You’re the Pioneer. We’re Mission Control.

LOCAL AFICIONADO'S EXECUTIVE CIGAR SHOP AND LOUNGE By Eric Wright Perhaps when you think of cigar smokers your mind goes to historic figures like Winston Churchill, Ulysses Grant or, for Baby Boomers, Archie Bunker. But if you survey the covers of Cigar Aficionado magazine, you quickly realize that those who enjoy a fine cigar are much like the connoisseurs of fine wines. You’ll see sports icons like Michael Jordon and Michael Strahan, along with the full gamut of Hollywood’s most recognizable faces, from Arnold Schwarzenegger to Matthew McConaughey and Denzel Washington. Did we mention the ladies like Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sharon Stone and Raquel Welch? According to Tony Nardone, the local aficionado who owns Downtown Melbourne’s iconic cigar des-

tination, the Executive Cigar Shop and Lounge, the comparison to the oenophilia – the one who loves wine – is the closest analogy to those who enjoy an excellent cigar. “The factors that go into producing a great cigar, from where and when the tobacco is grown, to how it is blended and how a company maintains the consistent taste and aroma that a consumer expects … with so many variables, is really amazing,” Nardone said.

The Advantages of Being Nimble and Innovative Brian Fleming and Omega Medical Imaging [ By Eric Wright, Publisher ]

Often, large corporations – which may dominate a market sector like the medical imaging field, which includes computerized tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and radiography – are so large they are not able to adapt to new, even disruptive, technologies. Sometimes these are spun off into other companies, as is the case with Harris Corporation and AuthenTec, which developed the fingerprint technology used on Apple phones. Other times, a smaller, nimbler company may emerge that introduces something transformative. Such may be the case with Central Florida’s Omega Medical Imaging led by Brian Fleming, which recently received FDA approval for its FluroShield system.

EW: I want to talk about how you became CEO of Omega, but first, explain the FluroShield system. BF: Radiological imaging equipment is used to do very exacting procedures, in cardiac cath labs, electrophysiology labs and in other interventional endoscopy procedures. Our technology, powered by AI (artificial intelligence), uses an ultrafast collimator and the world’s most advanced image processing, which has shown to reduce radiation by up to 80%. EW: Explain, for a layman, how it works. BF: During an interventional case, where x-rays are being used to guide a surgical procedure – in other words, serve as the eyes of the doctor – AI-enabled technology detects the Region of Interest (ROI), or where in the anatomy, or the place on the patient, say over the heart, the interventionalist is primarily focused. What we call the Our system, automatically collimates to the ROI, which is a narrow focus and only takes full Field of View (FOV) images – which is the larger surrounding area – every so many frames.

EW: So, the larger area, what you call the full Field of View images, appear clear, because they are enhanced, much like how you don’t see the individual frames clicking by when watching a film? BF: That is the basic idea. It merges the ROI and the FOV into one seamless image. The advantage is that the amount of radiation that both the patient and the medical team are being exposed to is dramatically reduced. EW: So why isn’t every hospital getting one of these? BF: The medical profession is very conservative, and we don’t have the advertising budgets of a GE Healthcare, Philips Medical or Siemens Medical, but we are doing all we can to get to both the clinicians and the administrators to understand our product. Currently, it is being demonstrated at AdventHealth in Orlando (formerly Florida Hospital). We have even considered doing a direct to consumer campaign, so that the patients can inquire if our technology is available as an alternative to the high exposures that are involved with equipment in common use. M AY 2019 : 47

UP CLOSE

EW: I would think, if I was a radiological interventionalist who did these procedures on a regular basis and was getting some exposure, sort of on an ambient basis, I would be very interested? BF: I agree, these are not short procedures like a typical dental or fracture x-ray, they may take an hour or more. EW: So where is your equipment manufactured and what is the connection to the Space Coast?? BF: We are based in Central Florida. All of our engineering and design work is done here, and our manufacturing facility is in Sanford. Actually, it is a Melbourne-based firm. Venture Management Group (VMG) and Skip Hauer are our partners and initially contacted me about Omega back in 2010. EW: Explain? BF: I started in the defense industry and ended up at GE. They had a spinout company; it wasn’t GE owned, but they developed the technology that was used in a health care application. Eventually, I ran the company. While there, I was introduced to Omega as one of our customers. We looked into acquiring it, 48 : SPAC E C OAST B US I N E S S

|

unsuccessfully. Then, when I was on my own, I tried to buy it, but I wasn’t able to put the deal together. One day I got a call from Skip Hauer with VMG and, believe it or not, I almost hung up on him. He said they were approached about an acquisition of Omega, but he said they don’t buy companies unless they have a CEO partner to run them. He asked if I would be interested. That was back in 2010. Since then we have enjoyed double digit annual growth. Skip and his team not only have an amazingly innovative business model, they also are great personally, and have had an incredible impact on a lot of people, like me. EW: What are the differentiators of Omega? BF: Many of these larger companies – and I know because I was part of one – won’t focus on an innovation that doesn’t move the needle a billion dollars … it isn’t significant enough for them. Because we are smaller, we are nimbler and can bring new technologies to the market much quicker. Plus, in most cases our equipment is more durable and cost effective. It is just a matter of getting the word out.
