Dear Space Coast Living readers,

S

ince last we met, I have been busy living my best Space Coast life. There have been many twists and turns, a few disappointments, countless celebrations, heartbreaking losses and mind-blowing gains.

Women’s March in DC

I have helped my mother transition from losing both my brother and father in a two-year span into a memory care unit at a wonderful facility in Miami. I have watched my daughter grow and change and face her teen years with determination and grace. I married my partner and best friend, Mark, and we have rescued another puppy – a Jack Russell/Border Collie mix we call Ace. And we moved our family, with our 89-year old mother-in-law in tow, into a beautiful home across the street from the ocean in South Melbourne Beach. Blessings, indeed. And. I. Have. Travelled. I have put my toes in the waters of Greece and Antigua and Islamorada and Panama. I have climbed a volcano in Costa Rica and weathered afternoon storms on cruise ships (with a freshly-brewed latte in hand). I have visited a Husky preserve in Alaska, whooshed down slopes in Wyoming and stood at the foot of prehistoric ruins in Mexico marveling at the mysteries of life. And after every trip, and every travail, every good or bad thing I’ve experienced – I’ve come back to Brevard. To my base. To my home.

Wedding day

“Home” has always been a hard concept for me. I’m a gypsy girl, raised on Army bases, and nomadic in spirit. I’m a culture junkie, a diverse music lover and a foodie lover – from Michelin to street food to home kitchens and taco trucks. I love good wine, but I’ve also enjoyed my share of craft beers and frozen boat drinks. And you know what I know? The Space Coast has all of these things. And so much more.

Café in Paris

It’ll be my pleasure to help you continue to discover the places, spaces and faces that make our slice of paradise unique to all of Florida. I feel blessed with the team of professionals who are helping me put together these pages every month and rely on their expertise and their own Space Coast experiences to help shape our coverage and make the content appealing to you, our fans, our audience… our heartbeat. Send me your story suggestions directly. Look for changes, slow and steady, as we strengthen our brand and expand our scope of coverage. And always find reasons to be grateful for Space Coast Living.

Each issue moving forward will feature information about a nonprofit doing important work in our community. This month, I am so proud to introduce the Postpartum Support Network, headed by my dear friend (and local Cloud 9 Real Estate agent!) Tina Lange. PPSN is a small, grassroots nonprofit connecting local mothers experiencing postpartum depression to the medical and mental health support they need, regardless of ability to pay. The organization also educates family members and the community about the signs, symptoms and treatments for postpartum, helping reduce the shame and stigma that can accompany the disorder, which affects nearly one in seven mothers in the months following childbirth. To learn more, www.postpartumsupportnetwork.org, visit the organization's Facebook page, or call (321) 223-1013.

ost everyone loves a party, but – as it’s said – the devil is in the details, and all the best parties have a familiar thread: someone is handling the planning to string all the entertainment, decorating, food and drink pieces and parts together to ensure the party plays on without a hiccup, hitch or hassle. If party planning is on your radar in the near or long-term, this is your lucky issue! We’ve spoken to a handful of local contractors in the business to learn what’s the best way to contact, contract and proactively plan your event, be it a wedding, a funeral, a holiday or a birthday. Of course, Brevard is home to many more providers of partyspecific services than can be listed here, but we’ve heard wonderful things and read more than a few glowing reviews about the ones we chose to highlight… and we hope you’ll love them, too!

Filling a Niche, One Pour at a Time Barmasters Mobile Bartending By Shawna L. Lucas, Publisher

A

few years ago, Dylan Forsythe was spinning records at a friend’s wedding and halfway through the event, a thunderbolt idea took hold. A graphic designer at the time (who DJ’d for fun on the side), Forsythe watched the bartenders hired for the wedding, studying their process from set up to tear down, — observing personalities, client and guest interactions, crisis management (no limes, oh no!) and event flow. “I knew I could create something comprehensive and unique for events, so I went about researching everything I could find on ‘for-hire’ bartending services,” he said. Three years later, Forsythe has assembled a core team of 5 regular bartenders, with 10 more at the ready, for the 350 clients he services annually through Bar Masters Mobile Bartending. Opened in 2017 and headquartered in Melbourne, where Forsythe grew up, the business extends its reach south to Miami, north to Daytona and west to the Tampa Bay area. 18: SPAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PACECOAST L I V I N G .CO M

milestone celebration) has a specific date attached to it. “For bigger events, I’d also recommend hiring an event planner,” he said. Turning over the keys to the event allows party planners to actively participate, but does not require constant effort. That’s what event planners do, and it’ll provide great peace of mind and allow party hosts more flexibility to enjoy the event with less stress, he explained.

Brian Hague at Rockledge Gardens, Rockledge FL Photo provided by Barmasters

Barmasters Mobile Bartending brings the bar to you, with everything needed but the booze, he said. All bar sets up include coolers and ice scoops, straws and napkins, cutting board and knife, garnish holder, shaker/strainer, wine and beer tub, spill mats and pouring bottles. Just add beer, wine, Champagne and spirits and the party is ready to go. Additional packages for frozen drinks and signature cocktails also can be arranged. To effectively plan for bar service, Barmasters has an online presence guiding users with an Alcohol Planning Guide (for purchasing) and short intake form for quotes on company services. The online grid breaks down the number of bottles needed by amount of expected guests, and includes extras such as sodas, mixers, fruit and garnish.

Bartenders from Barmasters are trained and insured. They carry additional certifications from Serv Safe, developed by the National Restaurant Association and experts who have direct experience with the risks involved in serving alcohol. Additionally, Barmasters carries liability, venue and general insurance for each event. Looking back over the last three years in business, Forsythe is most surprised by the growth trajectory and repeat business. Last year, the first Barmasters Mobile Bartending service franchise opened in Miami. There are plans to open more all over the country. “It’s been a wild ride,” he said, but clearly one worth taking. Cheers! For more information, visit online at www.barmastersmobilebartending.com or call (321) 298-1129. Dylan Forsythe (Owner) at Waldos Secret Garden, Vero Beach FL Photo provided by Barmasters

“I try to get back to anyone requesting a quote within 5 minutes,” he said, noting that this level of responsiveness and developing a clear line of communication (and friendly rapport) with clients has been key to Bar Master’s growth. Further tuning in to requests and needs for clients led Forsythe to partner with Chef David Garner and add Delish Dish catering to his line up of services in 2018. Ancillary and add-on options include DJ services, game board rentals for Corn Hole and Beer Pong, speaker rentals and more. With most major bookings for corporate and private events taking place between December and February each year, Forsythe suggests planners try to contract bar and catering services at least four to six weeks in advance of the event date, but can accommodate shorter timing and can book out a year to 18 months in advance if an event (such as a wedding or A PRI L 2020: 19

Twelve Years for Two Chicks (and a Pot) Info and Advice on Pulling off Simple to Supreme Soirées By Shawna L. Lucas, Publisher

L

ongevity is not a word typically used to describe much in the food services industry, and truth be told, Beth Hazley – of Two Chicks and a Pot – never expected to be in it in the first place. “I started as a network engineer,” she said of her first job out of college. As her career changed and morphed, she found herself working in that engineering role for a food-services company that had a test kitchen right next to her office. Eventually, she was spending more time in the kitchen than she was behind the screen, and her love for food preparation, cooking and presenting was borne. Still, she had to earn a living to help support her kids. After a corporate career in marketing that ended at Cisco some two decades later, Hazley finally took the entrepreneurial leap in 2008 and created Two Chicks and a Pot. The hometown company has been catering celebrations ever since, growing a steady base of corporate and individual clients.

Beth Hazley | Photography by Jason Hook

From an expansive space on Gus Hipp Blvd., in Rockledge that includes an intake area, tasting room, large kitchen and storage area, Hazley explained that event preparation is key to pulling off the perfect party. “We have an extensive Q&A session with clients,” she said, “and none of our menus are set. We may repeat a dish, but each menu is unique to each client’s needs, the event and the venue,” she said. After the Q&A, clients are invited to a sit down tasting, and items are culled or added to the menu to create the ultimate menu for the event. Hazley helps as many as 150 clients a year, from a simple wedding venue with 100, to large-scale corporate events, food festivals and special events. Things really ramp up between October and April, but Two Chicks and a Pot caters any time of the year. Her favorite foods to cook are “comfort foods,” such as Mac ‘n Cheese, casseroles and a Rosemary Chicken Bacon dish that she swears guests swoon over. She does not, however – will not, however – bake anything. “Oh nooo,” she said, “that’s not my specialty and we have so many good ones I would rather refer out to.” There are a variety of suggested menu options including Small Plates, Seafood, Kid-Friendly, Gluten-Free and Vegan, but really the only limit is the imagination of the planner. (These options have become so popular among clients that Hazley is going to launch a meal-prep service in April, with delivery and pick up options for clients, who will order through an online listing.) Key to stress-free party planning is research and planning. Hazley encourages party planners to search online to check out party themes, menus, decorating, rentals and flowers because there is so much out there. Ideas can then be creatively adapted or modified to individual preferences, dietary needs, etc. Of course, costs are dependent on the number attending/ amount and types of food/length of event, though Two Chicks and a Pot does include flatware, china, stemware and serving dishes in the event quote, which starts at about $3,000 for a 100 person wedding (not including tax and tip). Bartending service attendants can be added for an additional $200 per event. For more ideas or information, visit online at www.twochicksandapot.com or call 321-252-5111 to schedule a consultation.

SNAPPING UP MEMORIES WITH

Article by Shawna L. Lucas, Publisher Photography by

R

emember the days when you’d grab a bunch of friends, go to a old-timey photo venue, dress up like cowboys and can-can dancers, with gallon hats and feather boas, and get a grainy, sepia-toned 4x6 or 5x7 print in a paper frame? Yea, well, this is not that. These days, digital photo booths are among the top trends in party planning. And the cool thing is you can have the service come to your party, affair, wedding, baby shower, birthday celebration, graduation – whatever kind of party you’re planning – with customized backdrops and props specific to your celebration. Clients can choose a backdrop from a list of options, or provide their own. Advances in photo digital technology, along with the portability of the booth, provide another layer of affordable fun when party planning, and images are sent directly to the email of each person captured “in the moment.” Sassy Photo Booth is one local (and highlyrecommended) company providing on-site photography for events. Pricing starts at $750 for a three-hour (minimum) package and includes a photo booth attendant, who helps guests with the booth for the contracted time.

Owner Akili Phillips suggests party planners dedicate a specific area at their party spot, at least 10’x10’, for booth set up. For outdoor parties, she recommends a covered space or inside option in case the weather doesn't cooperate. Photo quality is top notch, with nighttime and daytime lighting options that help achieve the best possible resolution. “The booth is open air, modern and interactive,” Phillips said. Weeks after the events, she hears from clients, guests are still taking about what fun they had in the booth! “This is a digital-only service: guests suit up in props if they want, take a photo, enter their email address and receive a link to their photos right away,” she explained. The focus, if you’ll pardon the photo pun, is quality-first. “When I started this business, I was intentional about purchasing a booth with the best quality options available: from the lighting, to the backdrops and props, we invest in the best products available on the market to ensure our guest, and your guests, have an unforgettable experience!” Plan accordingly. Most events are booked 3-6 months in advance, with October through March among the busiest of months. For more information, (321) 372-4585 or online at www.sassyphotobooth.com.

Buds Etc. Offers Floral Expertise for Every Wedding Need By Heather Motro, Assistant Editor

ore than just a party, a wedding is a celebration of love, joy, and the union of families and, as anyone that’s ever planned a wedding can tell you, it’s crucial that every detail of the day combines to produce a dream-come-true event. Sometimes to do that, you have to think outside the box and be willing to break tradition. Luckily, Buds Etc. in Melbourne is not your traditional florist. This local floral and decoration studio specializes in creating dream come true weddings and events, with attention to decorative details that have won them high praise from clients and accolades from the industry. You may have heard about them: The studio was voted Best of Brevard in 2019 and has been featured on The Knot, Martha Stewart’s website, Forever Magazine, Orange Blossom Bride, Wedding Chicks… and the list goes on.

2 4: SPAC E COA ST L IV IN G | S PACECOAST L I V I N G .CO M

A conversation with company owner Patti Leicht reveals that what has made Buds Etc. so successful is a commitment to clients and their event vision. “I work 24/7 to bring each wedding the attention to detail it needs,” she said. “I just love our couples!” Leicht’s experience with all things floral started in her father’s garden shop, where she worked throughout her childhood. Her passion blossomed into her first floral shop in New York in the ‘90s. When she moved to Melbourne in 2004, Leicht brought her floral expertise with her and started Buds Etc. With nearly 45 years in the floral industry, Leicht is an expert in making every event beautiful. “You must know what you’re doing from selection of product to conditioning flowers to having a plan in place for execution for every wedding or event,” she said.

We’re more than just a home health care company

Five things to consider about your florals When planning the details of your wedding, or any big event, feeling overwhelmed is quite normal. The good news is that planning florals and decorations doesn’t have to be complicated: the key factor in your decoration planning should be your own preferences. However, deciding on other factors can help alleviate some planning stressors. LOCATION: Florida offers many non-conventional wedding ceremony locations that Buds Etc. is happy to accommodate. Year-round warm weather makes for beautiful ceremonies in parks, barns, fields and backyards while beaches, parks and golf courses add a unique Floridian twist. According to Leicht, the theme of the wedding will usually play off the location, but it doesn’t have to. “We do tropical arrangements for churches as well as beaches,” says Leicht. SEASONS: Don’t let a season or holiday confine you to a certain theme or color scheme. For example, December weddings don’t necessarily need mistletoe and dark, wintry tones. “We have tons of Christmas weddings using sunflowers and purples,” Leicht shares. FORMALITY: Leicht suggests that flowers as well as other decorations help establish whether the wedding is casual or formal. Fresh flowers are, of course, an integral part of any wedding scene, but consider other decorations, too: methods of lighting like lanterns and candles, tableware like linens and table numbers and other props like backdrops, crates, signage and the quintessential ceremony archway. Buds Etc.’s immense rental inventory provides decorations to suit anything from a shorts-and-flip flops bash to a chic, white-tie affair. And, if Buds Etc. doesn’t have exactly what you’re looking for, Leicht’s bound to know a vendor from around the community that does. INSPIRATION: “Before the internet, you would look through hundreds of books to find the right look for you,” Leicht said. Now you can find inspiration through online sources such as Pinterest, Instagram and Facebook. In fact, Buds Etc. has extensive Pinterest and Instagram pages found @pattibuds and a Facebook page @Buds.Etc to help generate ideas for your wedding celebration or event. PERSONAL TOUCHES: “I just love [that] I still get surprised at the creative ways our couples tie the knot!” Leicht said, mentioning favorite football teams and Disney movies as examples of her clients’ unique wedding themes. “I love them all, from the simple, small ones where the bride and groom have kissed for the first time, to the craziest themes with large bridal parties and hundreds of guests. I am happy to plan right along with them.” Planning with Buds Etc. includes several meetings and extensive communication between Leicht and the couple to ensure every personal preference, be it inspiration and colors or floor plans and seating arrangements, is considered. You’ve dreamed of your big day, and Buds Etc. is committed to decorating your dreams into reality. “From simple greenery to elaborate tall centerpieces… we take care of it all for you,” Leicht said. “We are right there for our couples.” Main photo: Patti and Doug Herman Photography by Jason Hook Flower display photo provided by Buds Etc.

There are so many beautiful places in Brevard to host an amazing event. From a lodge set up at the Brevard Zoo, to oceanfront in the sand with bon fires (permit required), there is no shortage of lovely venues and inspiring spaces, each with varying levels of services and costs. The three I like the best are outlined here, and each of them has beautiful outdoor spaces with indoor backup plans in case our finicky Florida weather chooses not to cooperate. You can customize each of these spaces with your own party theme supplies, designs and floral arrangements, or you can opt to use the spaces just as they are. These venues also offer delicious food and catering menus with many set-up options, from small plates for a cocktail party to elegant and extravagant sit-down dinners.

Tradewinds Restaurant at Duran Golf Club

7032 Stadium Pkwy, Melbourne, Florida Overlooking a beautiful lake and manicured vibrant green golf course in Viera, this restaurant is a favorite among party hosts and wedding planners. The outdoor veranda is a sizeable covered space that can accommodate larger parties. The full kitchen can handle any request from passed hors d'oeuvres to customized menus. I also love hosting gatherings during their brunch buffet, which feature bottomless mimosas (pictured)! On-site coordination is also available making this venue a stress free option. www.durangolf.com/tradewindsrestaurants/

River Rocks

6485 South US1, Rockledge, Florida River Rocks is a fine dining restaurant with sweeping views of the Indian River Lagoon. Actually, there are two dining establishments within the space, the fine dining bar and restaurant located inside the facility, and a very, large (mostly covered) patio and bar, with outdoor al fresco seating on decks directly facing the water. There is also a private banquet room available for hire. Special event menus feature fresh seafood (Pictured: Fresh Catch Salmon), creative twists on classic standards and locally-sourced ingredients, and can be customized for a variety of event styles. www.riverrocksrestaurant.com

The Mansion

1218 E New Haven Avenue, Melbourne Located just outside the Downtown Melbourne area, The Mansion is a historic venue in a large Victorian house that dates back to 1905. The collection of buildings features a large rooftop deck overlooking the water and cityscape as well as a large deck of covered outdoor space tucked between tropical foliage around the property, and an indoor space with a small bar with a wall of windows and natural light. The historic house itself houses a large beer, wine and liquor cellar with an impressive collection of libations from around the world. (Pictured: The Sangria at The Mansion). One of the interesting options at this venue is booking an event with a private wine tasting, and the venue hosts weekly and monthly tasting events (for a charge) if you want to sample a selection of foods with, for example, fine wines, Champagne or Whiskey. www.thebigmansion.com

SEAFOOD FEST Article and Photography by Harmony Lynn Goodson, Contributor Website: harmonylynn.com | Instagram: @harmonylynngoodson

H

opefully, by the time you read this, you’ve had time to adjust to the launch of daylight savings and are enjoying longer days and early evenings outside. Combining the ambient glow of the setting sun with the best offerings from the briny sea below it, you can enjoy our wonderful evening weather with all things al-fresco. Choosing seafood together with friends or family is a particularly fun, interactive activity (and a great way to ensure everyone gets what they want). It’s also a great way to serve a large group of guests with minimal preparation! Living by the beach, I host seafood feasts year-round. We have wonderful fresh seafood here and great weather for outdoor social gatherings. We took this party to my back deck but a party like this can transport anywhere from your kitchen to a dining room table, poolside, or even a picnic at a local beach or park! All the seafood featured in this article came from Clayton’s Crab Company on US1 in Rockledge. They carry a vast selection of seafood and other items you can cook at home, but helped make this feast super easy by seasoning and steaming the crab, shrimp and lobster ahead of time (call ahead to avoid a wait). If you need help choosing or don’t know how much to order, or what you need to do to prepare

an item, they are a great resource and happy to share insider tips! For sides, I roasted potatoes and fresh corn on the cob in the oven, then added everything to one large pot and kept it warm until my guests arrived.

STYLING UP YOUR FEAST For this easy-breezy casual dining style, I covered three folding tables with old newspapers, which helped make cleanup a breeze. Each place setting had its own basket of hush puppies, melted butter, seafood utensils, and cleanup supplies. For the napkins, I used kitchen towels instead of finer linens, anticipating my guests would need the extra absorbency for the hands-on foods. I also added lemons from a friend’s tree to freshen hands and bring a little color to the table. No need for fancy floral arrangements or extra decorations at this party; the seafood takes center stage and becomes an edible tablescape! For an appetizer, I served a jumbo lump crab dip in an adorable crab dish I found at my local Home Goods store. (Home Goods is a huge source for all my entertaining supplies! I also find a lot of my fun party items at craft stores, discount dollar stores, and shops like Old Time Pottery where I can buy larger quantities for less.) Pink Apron Confections, an amazing cookie artist located in central Melbourne, made these custom sugar cookies (pictured at left) for dessert. Crabs, lobsters, shrimp, corn with old bay, potatoes, and lemons; the perfect themed treats after such a large feast!

CRAB DIP RECIPE: INGREDIENTS: 8 oz cream cheese ¼ cup mayonnaise ½ tsp lemon juice 2 tsp Old Bay seasoning 8 oz jumbo lump crab meat INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat the oven to 350 F.

In a stand mixer with a whisk attachment, whip the cream cheese on high until light and fluffy, about one minute. Add the remaining ingredients except the crabmeat and whip until incorporated. Gently fold in the crab with a rubber spatula. Add to a baking dish and bake for 20 minutes. Serve hot, with crusty bread, crackers, thick potato chips or tortilla chips.

Spring Board Article and Photography by Harmony Lynn Goodson, Contributor Website: harmonylynn.com | Instagram: @harmonylynngoodson

C

harcuterie Boards are popping up at taverns, wine bars and fine dining establishments everywhere – from themed boards lined with banana leaves in Hawa’ii, to traditional salume and cheese boards found often in Italian bistros – there seems to be a board for every taste. Here, we’ve adapted our concept of a Spring Board to include things you might feature to celebrate Spring, or Easter, or even Purim. To accompany, select a fruity, mild red (such as Pinot Noir) or a structured, oaky white (such as a Chardonnay), and enjoy the variety of colors, tastes and textures!

Easter Eats A variety of dried fruits, meats, cheeses, fresh and roasted veggies organized by color. Cabbage doubles as edible bowls while a wooden carrot platter anchors the board and houses the nuts, deviled eggs, and crusty bread.

& Easter Treats A colorful mix of Easter's favorite candies mixed with cupcakes, macarons, and cookies. Edible grass, cupcake liners, and an Easter dish serve as color dividers. Marshmallow characters, and specialty chocolates complete the theme.

Bring on the Brunch Space Coast Spots Worth A Visit

Article and Photography by Summer Merrell, Space Coast Foodies Website: spacecoastfoodies.com | Instagram: @spacecoastfoodies

N

ew life, fresh starts, brighter colors and sunnier days. With Spring in full swing and Easter approaching, there’s a lot to celebrate. And, as local foodies dedicated to trying at least one new restaurant a week, a Spring tradition we’re totally on board with is BRUNCH. There are so many spots that make a great brunch on the Space Coast, from tiny, hidden gems to larger, fancier, well-known establishments. Here’s three that pass muster among the best of the best, IOHO.

⊲ The Fat Snook For the full-service, gourmet experience The Fat Snook has a way of making you feel like royalty – and a casual bestie – simultaneously. Their cozy, modern space in Cocoa Beach is one of our favorites in the area, and the service is always a highlight. From start to finish, this an experience you’ll enjoy each and every moment. On the menu, you’ll find thoughtful gourmet dishes and craft cocktails with unique personal touches. If you have a brunchy sweet tooth, you will die for the Cheesecake-Stuffed French Toast or Hawaiian Pull-Apart Bread. For Team Savory, the Lobster Tacos, Brunch Burger, and Mexican Street Corn Deviled Eggs are a flavor sensation that’s sure to please. If you really want the full experience here, do not hesitate to top it off with their oh-so-dreamy Cornflake Crème Brûlée, a sugary, crunchy, and-very-much-worth-it-indulgence that we’d recommend to anyone.

Mulberry Lane Café ⊲ For the family outing

We know the creations that come out of this humble diner in Melbourne will surprise you as they have us! For starters, they offer up some of the best Eggs Benedict in town, and it’s not just your average eggs-ham-hollandaise number. We’ve seen them build these babies with things like blackened shrimp, chorizo, grouper…and OMG, we love the tasty selections and creative variety! The Café also offers classic bakery staples that can’t be ignored – such as the massive, buttery, whole-hand-sized cinnamon roll. They also split and grill their muffins slathered with butter so they’re warm, toasty and bursting with savory flavor. You’ll never accept a cold bakery muffin again after trying one here! We’ve deemed this the best option for families because the price points are practical, the atmosphere is unpretentious, and menu is full of kid-friendly offerings. Ember and Oak ⊲

For the foodie-minded group If you’re ready to have the feast of your life, this is the place to do it. The menu at this crowded establishment works similarly to a tapas menu in a Spanish restaurant, offering tasty choices to be shared among several plates with a decidedly foodcentric experience. There are bigger plates, but they are also designed to be shared and the restaurant even recommends how many should plan to share the different food boards they offer. Be warned, you may find it difficult to converse on subjects other than what’s happening on the plate in front of you. The burgers are stacked sky high, the breakfast boards bursting; even the avocado toast towers are a food-lovers kind of Jenga. You’ll also find one-of-a-kind craft cocktails, such as the eponymous brunch go-to Bloody Mary and freshlysqueezed Orange Mimosa, both pictured.

The house-made breads here were also a stand-out: the French brioche bun, the rustic sourdough toast, and the fluffy soufflé pancake all were incredible. Another fun twist was the housemade, fried maple Spam (trust us!). We highly recommend coming here with a group so you can get the most out of the menu by sharing with folks who live to eat – rather than eat to live… especially if you choose to go with the hugely-satisfyingbut-impossible-for-two Breakfast Board! With holidays coming up such as Easter, Mother’s and Father’s Day, we strongly suggest you get a jump on reservations and check websites for holiday menus, which are often priced differently than everyday offerings. Want more local restaurant recommendations? Follow @spacecoastfoodies as we share all our Space Coast favorites on Instagram! PUT THE BREVARD BACK IN YOUR YARD: Consider Natives! By Amanda Rose, Rockledge Gardens

O

ver the past decade, there has been a dramatic increase in the availability of native plants at most retail nurseries. Since the benefits of planting natives include reducing water use and cost, as well as decidedly less maintenance, it’s no wonder there has been a sudden surge of interest.

If you are an avid lover of wildlife, many animal species are adapted to the nuts, seeds, flowers, and protection offered by native plants. By planting a few of the following, you are all but guaranteed encounters with butterflies, birds, native bees and small mammals.

In order to create a vibrant green and lush appearance, lawns require multiple applications of fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides. Selecting a few native plants — as either replacement for your existing lawn or as an accent to flower beds – can help reduce the need for those harmful products and create a healthier yard that benefits your neighborhood, local pets, indigenous wildlife, and the fragile ecosystems that are impacted by yard runoff.

With its unique appearance and modest height, American Beautyberry, Callicarpa americana L., can fit in just about anywhere and offers distinctive purple berries that provide not only a burst of bright color but also a wonderful snack for birds. And, researchers discovered recently that this plant packs a surprising bonus with its natural mosquito-repelling qualities!

Living in Florida has helped native plants adapt for water conservation. Less water for native plants means less work for your irrigation system and more water for conservation. Thinking of swapping out your bright green turf grass? Sunshine Mimosa, or Mimosa strigillosa, with its lovely fern-like foliage, spreads out to a beautiful carpet that is sprinkled with vibrant pink blooms throughout the year. For beachside dwellers, Dune Sunflower, or Helianthus debilis, is a wonderful choice. The full coverage of endless bright and cheery mini sunflower-like blooms will be the talk of the neighborhood.

To attract butterflies, bees and hummingbirds, our native Firebush, Hamelia patens, will bring them in droves. The bright orange-red flowers add a striking contrast to year-round foliage making it an attractive addition to any lawn or green space. Finally, all benefits aside, native plants are truly beautiful. From the pink plumes of the native Muhly Grass, Muhlenbergia capillaris, to the subtle orange and yellow hues of our state wildflower, Coreopsis sp., there is a native for every palette. The natural life cycles of natives are reminders of seasonal change and transition, which is not often observed in the Floridian landscape. When selecting natives, be sure to check out the Plant Real Florida website (plantrealflorida.org), which

delineates which plants will work best in your location and also offers a list of nurseries, growers, and planting professionals (www.floridanativenurseries. org) to help you piece your new, native space together. As is the case with all plants, taking care to know the requirements for each plant ahead of time, and planting it in the right place in your yard, will greatly improve your chances for planting success.

A host of smart tech options are emerging to help with lawn care and maintenance, and many of them can be managed from your phone! For example, the Edyn Garden Sensor (about $100) can help you decide which plants will thrive in your garden by running soil and light diagnostics, and can help you keep plants healthy by monitoring and reporting on humidity, moisture, temperature and soil nutrition (among other things). The Hunter Hydrawise (about $350) is an irrigating system that uses Wi-Fi and smart tech to collect weather data to calculate water loss and can automatically adjust watering schedules in response to too much or too little water. With the MyLawn app (free IOS and Android), you can set alerts when it's time to feed, seed and water your lawn, create a custom care plan, and monitor the amount of water your yard gets each week from rain, hoses or sprinklers.

Once Upon a Theme Park The Epcot Flower & Garden Festival

Article and Photography by Jess Mack, Columnist Website: jessamack.com | Instagram: @jessamack_

T

he Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival is in full swing right now and you really don’t want to miss this epic event. Epcot is undergoing a full range of park updates, which means the park is littered with construction, but don’t let that deter you from attending this event, up close, because it’s worth the very minor hassle. The Flower & Garden Festival is my favorite way to see Epcot. The festival gets its name from the absurd amounts of flowers, flower quilts and topiaries you can find throughout the park. Each topiary is created to resemble one (or more) of your favorite Disney characters such as Snow White, Anna and Elsa from Frozen, Beauty and the Beast and many, many more. This year, a new Remy topiary (from Ratatouille) will be featured at the French pavilion and is sure to be a huge draw. It will even be planted with veggies used in a traditional French ratatouille recipe!

40 : S PAC E COA ST L IV I N G | S PAC ECOA ST L I V I N G .CO M

This event is fun for all ages, with scavenger hunts that lead to cute prizes in play gardens perfect for kids and tweens. Teenagers generally enjoy the festival as well, due to the variety of performances, cultural displays and amazing evening fireworks/laser light show and seemingly random parades. Always a standout at the festival, the Flower Quilt, located next to the Imagination pavilion circling the small pond, makes for the most amazing photo backdrop. Adding extra zing, the monorail sails right over top of it, adding an extra wow factor to your photos. A crowd favorite, especially among the little ones, is the Goodness Garden Butterfly House, a kaleidoscope of butterflies in different stages of the life cycle. Located at Future World, this winding path is full of butterfly-friendly plants and flittering flutterbys! If you’re lucky, you might witness one bursting through their cocoon in chrysalises. If you’re really lucky, one might just land on you. Of course, it’s not a festival without food! Like other Epcot festivals, you will find (and stumble onto) many different food options at individual booths and in outdoor kitchens around

the park. Most will be located within the World Showcase themed to their respective countries. The food is usually light and refreshing, keeping with the Spring timeline. One of my favorites treats from years past is the Honey Tandoori Chicken Flatbread with white Cheddar, charred vegetables, clover honey sour cream and micro watercress. It is truly to die for and is usually found at the Honey Bee-Stro booth in the Imagination pavilion. If you’re a collector of fun Disney sippers and popcorn buckets, there is usually a new collectible of some sort available each year. Last year, it was the absolutely adorable Orange Bird sipper that was so popular there were hourlong lines to purchase it most days. Collectors take these things rather seriously, but with a little patience, you can avoid the long lines; I waited until later in the event and was able to snag one with a short, five-minute line. The Flower & Garden Festival also offers the Garden Rocks Concert Series showcasing performers such as Daughtry, Simple Plan, A Flock of Seagulls, Plain White T’s, The Pointer Sisters, and The Guess Who, among others. For the first time in festival history, shows will be held in the evenings at: 5:30 p.m., 6:45 p.m., and 8 p.m. at the American Adventure Pavilion, and all concerts are included with standard park admission. You still have time to enjoy this event but not much! The last day of the is Monday, June 1st! Go enjoy Epcot at its most beautiful. You’ll be glad you did!

Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Survivor Credits Unique Support Team For Healthy Outcome By Michael Polarchy, Health First Photo provided by Health First

W

“Lisa Strong” sprang to action on Valentine’s Day of 2019, when Lisa went to her annual breast examination.

Lisa’s family, however, is a little different from most.

Earlier that day, she had thought about canceling her mammography appointment, but now says she’s glad she didn’t.

In addition to her traditional family – children, parents, cousins and grandparents – she also learned to rely on her new family: nurses, doctors, leaders and mid-wives.

“I knew it was going to happen to me, but I just didn’t know when,” said Lisa, recalling her own mother’s battle with breast cancer.

They’re part of the “Lisa Strong” care team, made up of three different units at Health First, where Lisa has worked since 2003.

In early April, Lisa had a double mastectomy. In May, she started chemotherapy.

hen Lisa Sherrill learned she had triple-negative breast cancer and was in for the literal fight of her life, she did what many people do in times of crisis: she turned to family.

Banding together at work, her new family did not allow her diagnosis to take her to a dark place. They made pink T-shirts emblazoned with “Lisa Strong” on the front and “You GOAT this” on the back, a reference to the small menagerie of animals on the farm Lisa owns. “It made my day,” Lisa said, struggling to hold back tears. They also sent supportive text messages, started a fundraiser and made bracelets. The support was felt at home, too. Lisa describes how colleagues and friends came by every night without fail for six weeks with homemade, freshly cooked meals and chipped in to help care for her animals and do chores in the barn, as well. She credits her family with helping her wipe out the cancer and has turned her focus forward to checking off items on her bucket list. “The support system that I have is a blessing, and I’m lucky,” she said.

5 Tips to Help Maintain Your New Year’s Fitness Goals Throughout the Year Article and Photo Provided by Health First

F

or some of us, it’s never easy getting back in the gym after the holidays. While we’re used to feasting on holiday comfort foods, the beginning of the year is when the shift to become healthier kicks into gear. Unfortunately, most people who begin the year with a fitness resolution fall off the wagon after a few weeks or months. But our Pro-Health & Fitness Center Exercise Specialist Katie Munn is here to lend a helping hand. Here are her top five recommendations on how to maintain your New Year’s fitness resolutions for months to come. •

Create a realistic plan to achieve your goals – It's time to make your realistic and achievable plan for your realistic and achievable goals. Only you know what your body can and cannot do, so it's important to stay practical and achievable in the workout routines that you choose. It’s important to find out what drives you and what gives you that adrenaline rush. It’s crucial to create an exciting and realistic fitness plan to reach your goals. Track your progress – It is important to track your fitness progress every step of the way. If you are not seeing progress, it is time to switch up the routine and try a different approach. Consider trying new cardio machines, take a new fitness class and outdoor

activities you’ve always wanted to pursue. Get creative and choose a tracking method that will work for you. There are many different phone apps for tracking, daily fitness logs/journals, visual graphs and charts. •

Reward yourself – While it’s important to reward yourself after reaching important health milestones, it doesn’t always have to be food-related. It can be new clothes, a well-deserved nap or a trip to the movies. You know what drives you to succeed, and your reward should not regress progress.

Surround yourself with a positive support system – It’s easy to get disappointed and feel like quitting, which is why having a support system is an important element on your health journey. Family and friends are often great resources for maintaining fitness resolutions. This isn't going to be a walk in the park, so having someone to lean on will help push you through emotionally and physically challenging days.

Listen to your body – We all strive to be healthy, happy and fully satisfied when it comes to our bodies. It is extremely important to stay hydrated and maintain a well-balanced diet. The ability to listen to your body and being attentive to your vitamin, mineral and caloric intake will only enhance your fitness resolutions. APRI L 2020: 45

Saying Goodbye to a Local Legend O

n January 18, much of Brevard was shocked to learn that Heidi Deleuil, co-owner and magnanimous host of the Heidelberg Restaurant in Cocoa Beach and Heidi’s Jazz Club right next door, had passed away after an illness. Along with her husband, Heidelberg’s Chef Eddie Deleuil, the two had taken over a small restaurant owned by Heidi’s mom in 1986, and grown the reputation and clientele into a renowned spot for fine dining in an elegant atmosphere. In 1992, Heidi opened her beloved jazz club right next door and could be found jamming there often, in the later hours of the night, with well-known jazz musicians from around the globe. One of the club’s regular performers, Sybil Gage, has penned this tribute to her. Heidi had a Jazz Funeral on March 22. I can’t think of a more deserving honor for her. She was raised on jazz music and dedicated a large portion of her life to preserving, promoting and supporting it through her club. I started performing at Heidi’s in 2009 and our friendship grew night after night as we spoke over cocktails at the finish of those evenings. Heidi talked about coming to America from Austria with very little. She used to clean houses, and told me she now owned one of the houses she had maintained in the past. She took joy in having earned her way to the very top.

Chef Eddie an d Heidi Deleu il of the Heide lberg Restaur ant in Cocoa Beach

Heidi was most proud of her club, Heidi’s Jazz Club in Cocoa Beach, recognized by Downbeat Magazine as one of the worlds top venues for jazz music. She saved a copy for me and I still have it. I admired and learned from her dedication to excellence. Her philanthropy is evident in her support for others like Jack Simpson and his long running Jazz on the Beach radio show on WUCF (at 50 years, it’s the longest running show of its kind and still can be heard at its noon slot every Saturday). Her popular Sunday Jazz Jam gave great exposure to young people looking to play with more experienced musicians. She also supported the Space Coast Jazz Society, founded by Jack Simpson, in its ongoing effort to keep all forms of jazz music vibrant.

I remember visiting Heidi’s Jazz Club back in the early 2000’s, when it was half the size it is now. It was cool then, and always packed with a city groove not so easily found in these parts. It is expansive now, plush and beautiful and, whether smaller or newer, Heidi was there almost every night of the week, enjoying it all. I will miss Heidi, her feisty energy, her humor and her kindness, forever. But her legacy will live on in the jazzy nights at the club and in the delicious meals at the restaurant next door that started it all. Get over for a visit and raise a glass of champagne to Heidi!

Ken New’s

PROCESS DRIVEN APPROACH Combining Experience & Experiences By Eric Wright, President

ach of us are shaped by our experiences. They help form who we are and how we approach both life and business. For Financial Advisor Ken New, founder of Pinnacle Financial Wealth Management in Merritt Island, two very specific and seminal experiences seemed to have forged his character. First, he grew up on a family farm in the Big Sky country of Montana. In fact, their land was in the same valley made famous by Custer’s Last Stand, where the Bighorn River provided the irrigation that turned the typically arid grasslands into a garden-like Eden. It is inherent in farming that you approach life from a long-term, seasonal perspective, where stewarding the resources you have can mean productivity, not for years, but for generations. It is an environment where hard work and initiative pay off, and where personal responsibility is required for success and imprinted on your psyche. It was from this farmstead setting that New set off to Montana State University for an accounting degree, with a plan to springboard after to law school. He saw himself as a future business litigator and had the drive and acumen to realize that dream. But, sometimes, one dream gets eclipsed by another. 8 SPACE COAST BUSINESS

During his first summer break – like many college students do, he took available jobs, which put him at the bottom of the economic food chain, as most students realize in today’s times. “I heard about people working in Alaska on jobs related to the pipeline, earning ten times as much as I was,” he said. With the brighteyed determination of a typical student, and risk aversion at the lifetime low, typical of most 18year olds, New caught a ride with a trucker all the way to Anchorage and ended up staying ten years.

The Call of the Wild In this second paradigm-shaping experience, New’s farm background made driving big rigs across the ice and tundra, from Fairbanks to Prudhoe Bay, a comfortable fit. Though comfortable is probably not the right adjective. Adventuresome, often dangerous, in a setting as opportunistic as the gold rush days of the 1980’s. “I was pulling down serious money, for a guy my age, but I saw an entrepreneurial opening in the burgeoning population of Anchorage, that grew from 50,000 to 250,000 while I was there,” he recalled. He and a few friends started a restaurant, Sea Food Restaurants of Alaska, which grew to five profitable and strategic locations. New’s success was a combination of a farm-bred work ethic, entrepreneurial awakening and the fine-tuning of operational skills through the happenstance of learning from a McDonald’s executive who had come to Alaska to erect the golden arches.

That is also where he met his wife Linda, a native of the Space Coast, who had gone north to visit family and see what would unfold. Eventually, the New’s cashed out and moved to southern California. “We wanted to get as far from the frigid north as we could. But the traffic gridlock of San Diego, along with starting a new family, made us realize California wasn’t the place,” New said. They decided to head east to see what opportunities might present in Brevard County. They moved to Merritt Island in 1993, where years later, their daughter, Lindsey would graduate from the same high school as her mother did. As New realized he was too young to retire, and the 24-7 commitment of the restaurant business was not conducive to the family life they aspired to, he began to look at financial services. It was a field that involved the people skills he had honed as a restaurateur, along with the operational management abilities he had discovered and developed.

Hitting the Reset Button “I had the opportunity to talk with some people from John Hancock. In the late ‘90’s they were expanding into the Central Florida market, and the more I learned, the more I realized this field was a good fit for me,” he said. As fate would have it, John Hancock’s recruiter happened to be one of Linda New’s best friends in high school, something they realized after he was offered a position at the company. New enjoyed the mentoring and security of working for a major corporation but things were about to change. When the company decided to take their business in a different direction, he got served “the same pink slip as every other employee. They did a good job helping people transition,” he said, “but I realized at that point I wanted to be in control of my own destiny.” The biggest change for New wasn’t running his own business: he had done that as a restaurant owner. It was, instead, pushing reset regarding how to do business. “Basically, what my job had been was to sell John Hancock’s products to people. They had great processes, but I found a whole new portfolio of products that allowed me to customize what was best for each of my clients, instead of trying to fit everyone into the proverbial ‘round hole’,” he explained. He left John Hancock right after the Y2K scare that began the new century. Looking back on the advances in the last two decades,

his business has evolved right along with it. Because it has been a period of dramatic change, following and adapting to change became a part of his company’s DNA, along with developing effective processes that help clients reach their financial goals.

Looking Towards the Future To New, the key is helping clients understand all the different facets of proven and strategic financial management. That process unfolds not by offering advice, rather by asking questions. According to New, “Each client has different desires; for one it may be income, with others there may be risk issues, or needs for legacy planning.” One major focus for New and his team is the tax implication of varied investment strategies, not to mention safeguarding against market volatility. A strategy New has studied extensively is how large endowments have been able to smooth out market fluctuations by including private equity to grow assets while providing income. “The typical family has the same needs as the foundation: they need durable income, coming in at steady monthly increments, without sacrificing the asset,” he said. The Yale Model, as it is called, was pioneered by David Swensen and Dean Takahashi. They originated this kind of investment approach while managing the endowment portfolio of Yale University. What is different today, versus previous years, is that you can get into this type of vehicle with a lesser investment, starting at around $50100,000, instead of the $1million buy-in required at the fund introduction. 11 SPACE COAST BUSINESS

“If there was a missing piece of information that was costing you money now, or that would cause a significant problem or cost in the future, when would you want to find out about it?”

SPONSORED

After understanding the client’s needs and expectations, New sees his role as empowering his clients through education. He likes to say, “If there was a missing piece of information that was costing you money now, or that would cause a significant problem or cost in the future, when would you want to find out about it?” Of course, the answer is before you make a decision. “One of the best ways for clients to make money is to avoid losing it in the first place. So, we focus on all the missing facts, to keep your money from falling through the cracks.” Combined with the lessons of his younger years, these are the strategies that New and his team have utilized for more than twenty years of building relationships with people of all ages, from all walks of life, with a variety of financial goals.

Brevard’s Only 5-Star Hospitals

Thank you to all our associates, providers, volunteers and community members for helping us become the only two hospitals in Brevard to achieve a five-star rating.

“I was in the hospital for three days and the staff was awesome -- from the emergency room to the second floor. Staff was friendly and always on top of things. Thank you, Cape Canaveral Hospital, for a great experience.”
