INTRODUCTION... HCFC R22 is the most widely used refrigerant in air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment, however, it is classified as an ozone depleting substance and so is the subject of a phase-out programme under the European Community (EC) Regulation No. 2037/2000. From the end of December 2009 it became illegal to use any virgin (new) HCFC refrigerants including R22 for service and maintenance purposes and from the end of December 2014 all R22, including reclaimed/recycled, will be banned. This regulation means that owners/operators of any air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment, designed to use R22, should plan to replace this equipment. These phase-outs coincide with energy consumption and carbon emission concerns and as a consequence manufacturers have developed new technologies to improve operating efficiencies up to 40%. The manufacture of air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment designed to use R22 (for the European market) was phased out from 1999 and finally prohibited in 2004, therefore much of this equipment is already becoming due for replacement as it is nearing the end of its normal life cycle period. Coupled with the Energy Performance in Buildings Directive and other legislation designed to reduce the environmental impact of our commercial buildings, the need for building owners/operators to show their green credentials by acting on environmental responsibilities has never been greater. Space Air believes, as Daikin Distributors since 1980, that we share these environmental responsibilities and must act to raise awareness of current and imminent legal obligations affecting air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment installations. We can assist with the planning process and replacement strategy for existing systems operating with HCFC R22 refrigerant and advise on all environmentally acceptable, energy efficient alternatives available from Daikin’s extensive and world renowned product range. It is important that end-users are able to make informed and timely decisions when electing to replace their existing air conditioning systems. With this in mind Space Air can detail a number of replacement options for consideration and offers information on the various practical and financial advantages of a replacement strategy.

WHY REPLACE NOW RATHER THAN LATER? End-users may believe there is a sufficient amount of time (5 yrs) in which to replace their existing air conditioning system. This is true to a certain extent, however, there are a number of factors that should be taken into careful consideration before deciding which course of action to take, such as: U

The sale/use of virgin (new) R22 refrigerant was banned in the European Community from the end of December 2009.

U

From the end of December 2014 all R22 systems will effectively become obsolete as the use of any HCFC refrigerants (new or recycled) for service and maintenance will be illegal.

U

Industry experts are concerned that a last minute rush to beat the phase-out deadline will result in very high costs, labour shortages and poorly installed replacements.

U

Sourcing and procurement of R22 refrigerants (virgin and recycled) and equipment spare parts will become increasingly difficult, which in turn will result in maintenance issues, long lead times and unacceptable system downtimes due to availability limitations.

U

The price of spare parts for equipment designed to use R22 has recently increased by up to 30% and will continue to rise as it becomes less cost effective to maintain supplies.

U

The frequency of older (R22 based) system breakdowns can be expected to increase.

U

R22 systems consume more electricity (up to 40% more) than modern equivalents thus producing higher CO2/carbon emissions and operating costs.

U

Advances in air conditioning and heat pump technology mean that the associated running costs can be around 30-40% lower than systems operating with R22 refrigerants.

THE BENEFITS OF REPLACING YOUR EXISTING SYSTEM: UÊÊ

iÀ}ÞÊÃ>Û }ÃÊ vÊ ÀiÊÌ > Ê{ä¯1 Older HCFC R22 systems on average have a COP (Co efficient of Performance) of 2.5 or 250% efficient. Current HFC R410A systems on average have a COP of 4 or 400% (kW output divided by kW input). Therefore if your current running costs are £10,000 per year you could save as much as £4,000 per year.

ÎÊÌ ÊxÊÞi>ÀÊÜ>ÀÀ> ÌÞÊ Ê iÜÊiµÕ « i Ì Your existing system holds no warranty so breakdowns will be costly. When you replace your equipment with Daikin you will have a full 3 year warranty which in some cases can be extended to 5 years at very little cost2.

ÜiÀÊ > Ìi > ViÊV ÃÌÃÊ ÀiÊÌ > Ê£x¯® Older systems need regular maintenance and with less informative controls faults can take longer to diagnose. With the advancements in technology and electronic controls, maintenance has been simplified with remote diagnostics and reduced service times.

ÀiÊivv V i ÌÊV ÌÀ Ê > >}i i ÌÊÃÞÃÌi Older systems have limited management control and are more difficult and costly to manage; newer systems with the advancements in electronics make it easier to manage and troubleshoot via a weblink or remotely at almost no cost.

", / " Ê& DEFINITIONS: ,ivÀ }iÀ> ÌÊ is a chemical substance (non explosive, non corrosive, non toxic) used in the refrigeration cycle in all types of air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration equipment. The advantage of refrigerant is that it has thermodynamic properties, which can carry 50 times more energy than air and 10 times more energy than water, per kg of weight and has a boiling temperature of between -40°C to -50°C which enables efficient heat energy absorption. Refrigerant comes in several types: ChloroFluoroCarbon CFC (R11 & R12) HydroChloroF uoroCarbon HCFC (R22) HydroFluoroCarbon HFC (R134a, R407C, R410A) CFC and HCFC contain chlorine, which is known to damage the ozone layer. CFCs are now banned and HCFCs are being phased out. There are non-fluoro refrigerants such as Ammonia and Hydrocarbons; however, these have safety restrictions due to their explosive, corrosive and/or toxicity features. ÀÊ ` Ì }Ê Êin its full definition means controlling the temperature (heating and cooling), ventilation, filtration, humidification and dehumidification. ,ivÀ }iÀ>Ì Ê ÞV iÊ Êis a sealed process utilising refrigerant as a substance used to transfer energy. The cycle comprises four main components: Evaporator where the energy absorption occurs Compressor where the pressure, hence temperature is increased Condenser where the energy is rejected Expansion Device to reduce pressure, hence pressure The refrigeration cycle exists in all types of equipment such as the home refrigerator, freezer, car air conditioning, cold rooms, supermarket freezers and coolers, chillers in building or industrial processes. COP (Coefficient Of Performance)Ê ÊThis can be described as a factor or percentage. It is a measure of the efficiency of a device and is the result of dividing the energy output by the total energy input. COP is measured at specific operating conditions and must not be confused with seasonal efficiencies. COP is the measure of energy efficiency in heating. EER (Energy Efficiency Ratio)Ê ÊIt is the same definition as COP, except it is used to measure energy efficiency in cooling. SPF (Seasonal Performance Efficiency)Ê SPF is the total energy output divided by the total energy input measured over a period of time (generally annually) at various temperatures and times reflecting the true overall efficiency of a device or system. i>ÌÊ*Õ «ÃÊ absorb heat (evaporator) from outside and transfers it via a refrigeration cycle to inside (condenser). The Heat Pump system can be a reverse cycle type that can provide heating or cooling.

}Ê ÞV iÊ absorbs heat (evaporator) from inside and transfers it via a refrigeration cycle to outside (condenser). -« ÌÃÊ-ÞÃÌi ÃÊ Êcomprise of two components (one indoor and outdoor) with interconnecting refrigeration pipe work. A split system can be cooling only or reverse cycle heat pump. VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume, sometimes referred to as VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) - VRV is a multi split system where several indoor units can be connected to one outdoor unit. Can be available as cooling only, heating or heat recovery. *>V >}i`Ê the complete refrigeration cycle (evaporator, condenser, compressor) are all in one enclosure. These could be aircooled, water-cooled or a mix.

iÀÊ a packaged refrigeration cycle where the heat absorption and rejection into the space is carried out via water. Chillers can be water-cooled (condenser heat is rejected via water), air-cooled (heat is rejected – cooling to the surrounding ambient air or absorbed heating from the surrounding air). ÛiÀÌiÀÊ converts direct current into alternating current by changing the frequency of the electrical supply to a motor, hence changing the speed accordingly. ÛiÀÌiÀÊ ÌÀ Ê Changing the speed of the compressor motor to match the capacity of the system via electronic sensing of temperatures and pressures. >ÃÊ,i}Õ >Ì ÊÊ ÊFluorinated gases (or F-gases), currently used in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems (HFCs), are safe and efficient but are green-house-gases (GHG) with global warming potential (GWP) if leaked to atmosphere. EC F-Gas Regulation 842/2006 introduced legislation in the UK and all other EU Member States to improve containment and reduce emissions of F-Gases covered by the Kyoto Protocol. Ê,i}Õ >Ì (EC2037/2000) – introduced bans on the use of certain ozone depleting substances. Some bans were immediate and others, including HCFCs used in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment, are being phased in. The supply/use of virgin HCFCs will be banned from the end of 2009 and the supply/use of recycled or reclaimed HCFCs will be banned from the end of 2014. HCFC – HydroChloroFlouroCarbon refrigerant gases are most commonly found in older refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump equipment. However these gases contain ozone depleting properties if leaked to atmosphere and therefore all HCFCs (including blends) are the subject of an EU Phase out Regulation – see EC 2037/2000 above.
