Why Ventilation? New Building regulations Part L1A “ Conservation of fuel and power in new dwellings” stipulates increased insulation and requirements for pressure testing of dwellings. This has made Part F “Means of Ventilation” more important to implement. Part F stipulates the reason why ventilation is necessary (General guidance 0.7 p 6) : a. Provision of outside air for breathing b. Dilution and removal of airborne pollutants, including odours c. Control of excess humidity (arising from water vapour in the indoor air) d. Provision of air for fuel-burning appliances Part F also stipulates a minimum ventilation rate of 0.3 l per sqm. It also gives guidance to the type of ventilation approved : 1. Background Ventilators 2. Passive stack ventilation 3. Continuous mechanical extract 4. Continuous mechanical supply and extract with heat recovery In selecting a ventilation system we should bear in mind the energy consumption and its consequence to SAP, TER ( Target Emission Ratings). Continuous mechanical supply and extract with heat recovery is the best and cost effective method to satisfy and improve these ratings.

Daikin’s Heat Recovery Ventilation (HRV) Daikin HRV is a complete total heat recovery ventilation system and comprises : a. Total heat exchanger made from specially treated processed paper that allows not only the sensible heat to be transferred but the latent heat. The total efficiency of the Daikin heat exchanger is 75 - 80 %. This heat exchanger satisfies the requirements to control humidity also. b. Due to being a total heat exchanger (sensible and latent) no drain is required allowing the unit to be installed in any position (upside down, vertical or horizontal) giving total flexibility. c. Separately controlled low energy (as little as 60 watts) supply and extract fans which will allow for positive supply to pressurise the room to stop ingress of pollution and odours from outside, bathrooms and kitchens. d. An automatic temperature controlled bypass damper to bypass the heat exchanger when the temperature of the room air is higher than the outside air (summer) to provide free cooling and helps reducing solar heat gain (SAP calculation) and the use of mechanical cooling. e. State of the art controls which has 7 day time clock, temperature control, fault diagnosis, fan speed control and filter clean indication, from an easy to use wired remote controller which can be installed within 50 meters from the HRV unit. f. Easy to clean washable filters which only requires cleaning once every 6 or 12 months. g. Extremely low noise as low as 20.5 dBA. h. Compact and insulated.

What is Heat Recovery Ventilation? (HRV)

Heat Recovery ventilation (HRV) is a complete supply and extract system where the ventilation rate is controlled via supply and extract fans. It consist of a heat exchanger where the extracted stale air is crossed with the supply air where the energy stored in the air is transferred from the high side to the low side hence the heat recovery term. There are several types of heat exchangers, plate heat exchangers (only sensible heat*) and paper heat exchangers (sensible and latent*) Efficiency of heat exchangers are the ratio of heat transferred from the low side to the high side. Plate heat exchangers efficiency is sensible efficiency only and would require drains, while paper heat exchangers are sensible and latent and would not require drains * Sensible heat is the energy stored in inert gases (oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen etc). Latent heat is the energy stored in the moisture particles in the air. Outside air in the summer has approximately 50% of the heat stored in the moisture, the extract air has less moisture, while in the winter the extract air from the house has 40% of its energy stored in moisture. Total heat exchangers will not only recover more energy but also assist in humidity control.

HRV Operation Modes:

The HRV unit can operate in 2 modes

The Total Heat Exchange mode (Fig. 1)

Bypass mode (Fig. 2)

In total heat exchange mode the ventilator exchanges the

In Bypass mode the exhaust air bypasses the heat

exchanger element. Fresh cool air is brought directly into

air (from outdoor) by means of a high efficiencies heat

exchanger element. This avoids cold draughts when the

outdoor air is colder than the indoor air.
