Heat Pump Technology (since 1958) Daikin Altherma is an air to water inverter heat pump system supplied by Space Air. Heat pumps offer a highly efficient alternative to conventional fossil fuel boilers, for heating and/ or hot water. fig.1

Heat pumps absorb free energy (heat) from a low-temperature source (air, water or ground) and upgrade it to a higher temperature, via the refrigerant cycle, (like your fridge at home but in reverse (fig.2). Efficiency ratios range from 3:1 to 5:1 (300-500%), i.e. for each 1kW of electricity consumed between 3kW - 5kW of heat energy can be transferred (conventional fossil fuel boilers are around 70 - 90% efficient) - Therefore heat pumps are more cost effective, eco-friendly and use renewable energy for the greater good of our environment.

The refrigerant cycle comprises of 4 essential components (fig.1). 1) The Evaporator - absorbs heat from renewable source (air, water, ground). 2) The Compressor - raises pressure hence temperature of absorbed heat. 3) The Condenser - rejects upgraded heat to the source inside (air or water). 4) The Expansion Device - reduces pressure/temperature to allow evaporation (Heat absorption) at low temperatures. Note: Boiling temperature of water = 100oC. Refrigerant boiling temperature = minus (-40 ~ -50°C)

fig.2

Benefits of Daikin Altherma Daikin Altherma is extremely efficient with an averageUK Seasonal Performance Factor* of 3.2 (320%). Facts & Statistics • 84% of energy consumed at home is for heating and hot water • UK annual average ambient temperature ranges between 8-11°C • The UK climate is considered ideal for air source heat pumps due to mild temperature conditions. • The Daikin Altherma utilises R-410A refrigerant • R-410A refrigerant has a boiling point of [minus] -53oC, water has a temperature boiling point of 100oC • The lower the heating temperature - the more efficient the boiler (Gas, Oil or Heat Pump), - the more comfortable the heating temperature, - the less danger from scalding (heating or hot water), - the lower the energy losses from distribution pipes + domestic hot water tank. Heating temperatures According to the latest Part L1A and B (section of Domestic Heating Compliance Guide 2006), water temperatures should be supplied, at the following temperatures for heating and hot water. 45 - 55°C for radiators

30 - 35°C for fan convectors/fan coils

35 - 40°C for under floor

45 - 50°C for Hot Water

Sanitary hot water WRAS (Water Regulation Advisory Scheme) (Schedule 2, Section 8 page 8.9) guidelines state that hot water needs to be stored above 60°C and distributed at no less than 55°C to prevent microbial growth (legionella*). However, in recommendations it states that ‘hot water should be distributed less than 50°C’ to avoid risk of scalding. *Daikin Altherma controls incorporate a weekly sanitation mode (legionella) which will raise water temperature to 60oC and above, it cannot be overridden.

System Efficiencies (30-75% savings) Changing your Gas or Oil boiler to a Daikin Altherma air source heat pump system, will be the biggest environmental improvement a household can make - by substantially reducing energy consumption and CO2 emissions. Definition of carbon footprint

System Efficiency

Renewable energy is energy derived from resources that are regenerative or for all practical purposes cannot be depleted. For example, the ambient air around our homes is a renewable, regenerative resource from which Daikin Altherma air source, air-towater heat pump absorbs energy in the form of heat, which results in energy savings as indicated below.

Carbon footprint is a measure of carbon emissions based on energy consumption per kWhr & fuel type i.e. Direct electric, mains gas, LPG or oil. The Daikin Altherma is an allelectric, highly efficient, heat pump & despite the inefficiencies of electrical generation compared to gas or oil can provide massive CO2 emission savings as indicated below.

Daikin Altherma is manufactured to the highest standards & will achieve seasonal efficiencies of over 320% in the UK climate; i.e. For every 1kW of energy consumed 3.2kW of heat energy output is available (heat from ambient + energy input).

Daikin Altherma range from Space Air Space Air Daikin Altherma is a range of highly efficient air source, air to water, heat pump systems, all designed to replace the conventional fossil fuel central heating boiler systems, to reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills. Split System (6kW ~ 16kW)

Mono System (6kW ~ 16kW)

HT System (11kW ~ 16kW)

Multi System (23kW ~ 45kW)

The most popular and versatile system is the low/ medium temperature Split range (Classic). The system consists of 2 parts - an outdoor heat pump and indoor ‘hydro-box’ reaching temperatures up to 55oC on its own without additional back up heater. Available in 6 capacities single phase and three phase, for heating and hot water. There are 3 cylinder sizes available (150/200/300L).

The Mono type system consists of the same components as the Split type system but housed all-in-one outside unit. The Mono system also reaches temperatures up to 55oC on its own. Available in 5 capacities single and three phase, for heating and hot water. There are 3 cylinder sizes (150/200/300L).

The HT ‘high temperature’ system is capable of water temperatures up to 80oC using a cascade based refrigerant cycle. This specialist system is available in 3 models, single and three phase, for heating and hot water. There are 2 cylinder sizes available (200/260L).

NEW: Daikin Altherma series for apartment buildings and collective housing known as ‘The Multi Daikin Altherma’ is able to efficiently heat water temperatures up to 70°C, with remarkable efficiency (COP’s up to 3.5) because of its ability to recover the heat stored in the outdoor air.

Ideal for: all housing of any size both new build and retro-fit and can be modular (multiple units). • Refrigerant pipe work connects the outdoor to the indoor unit for minimal energy losses and greater system flexibility • The outdoor unit can be positioned discreetly outside up to 30-75 metres away from the indoor unit • The indoor unit can be positioned anywhere in the home as it has no need for ventilation, or flues.

Ideal for: some housing and commercial type applications, however flexibility is considerably reduced. • Ideally suited for underfloor heating, LTHW radiators or fan coil units • Freeze protection of hydraulic parts • Water pipe work between outdoor unit and indoor heat emitters • Reduces installation time and costs. .

Ideal for: very large older residential properties but mainly commercial applications such as hospitals and restaurants, where higher temperatures are needed for constant sanitation. The cascade system Daikin’s unique cascade compressor approach to the heat pumps (one refrigerant cycle in the outdoor unit and one in the indoor unit ), enables the water temperature to be increased up to 80°C, without the need for a back up heater. Rapid heating for domestic hot water allows for a smaller storage cylinder.

Outdoor units extract the heat from the outdoor air, raise the temperature and transfer this heat energy to the individual indoor units. Multiple outdoor units can be installed for still larger applications. Ideal for: Apartment buildings - flats and housing association blocks and collective housing. Building heights (from rooftop outdoor unit to lowest apartment) of 50 metres can be accommodated.

Space Air Daikin Altherma towards CSH • SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) is the system for assessing the energy performance of dwellings. Indicators of the energy performance are energy consumption per unit floor area and energy cost rating (the SAP rating), based on CO2 emissions and a Dwelling CO2 Emission Rate (DER). • The SAP rating is based on the energy costs associated with space heating, water heating, ventilation and lighting, less any cost savings from energy generation equipment. It is adjusted for floor area so that it is essentially independent of dwelling size. The SAP rating is expressed on a scale of 1 to 100, the higher the number the lower the running costs. • The Dwelling CO2 Emission Rate (DER) is used for the purposes of compliance with building regulations. It is equal to the annual CO2 emissions per unit floor area for space heating, water heating, ventilation and lighting, less the emissions saved by energy generation technologies, expressed in kg/m2/year. • TER (Target Emission Rating) is a calculation of Part L1A set by the Government and should be lower than the DER by 20% (Variable).(DER x fuel factor less 20% = TER). • The Code of Sustainable Homes is a star rating system set to exceed Part L1 Building Regulation targets. The ‘Altherma’ system will help achieve a higher star rating, in accordance with the Code for Sustainable Homes where... 1 j = 10% better than Part L 2 j j = 18% better than Part L 3 j j j = 25% better than Part L 4 j j j j = 44% better than Part L 5 j j j j j = 100% better than Part L (on heating & water only) 6 j j j j j j = rating is considered as a carbon neutral home; ie: zero net emissions of CO2 from all energy (heating, hot water, lighting, power etc.) used in the home.
