Everyday adventure

– making a Big Difference

South Yorkshire Scouts are making a big difference. More teenagers are joining than ever and more young people are joining the adventure from all communities in South Yorkshire. South Yorkshire Scouting offers fun and adventure to people of all faiths and from all kinds of communities. This year we have delivered more projects and activities than ever to support all our volunteers and ensure it suits their individual needs. We promoted Scouting to diverse and varied communities and we increased awareness of our Movement’s impact. The South Yorkshire Scouting adventure comes in many forms, from expeditions abroad to team building and leadership opportunities in the UK. It’s through everyday adventure that we enrich lives and help develop young people across South Yorkshire.

It's all about making

the most of the Opportunity

Dear colleagues,

Well that was SCOUTTASTIC, what a year 2014 / 2015 was! The past year has had many highlights, not least the gathering of 2,000 Scouts at Hesley Wood for SCOUTTASTIC, which provided an action packed weekend including a fairground and 150 activities for all ages to enjoy. A Cub activity weekend at Kingswood and Beaver sleepover at Magna added another dimension to your already packed programmes. The growth of our Movement is always important but so is the diversity and inclusive nature of our membership. The number of females has increased but so has the number of groups and members in communities and areas where traditionally Scouting has not been represented. Over the next year this will continue and the development supported by Youth United Foundation Funding will hopefully see more groups and sections open in hard to reach communities throughout South Yorkshire. In April we celebrated the achievements of so many young people and adults in Scouting at the Annual County Awards Dinner. This was a fabulous event full of inspiring stories, hosted by our young people and made all the better as awardees were able to share it with their families. It is also great to see events like APEX back on the calendar as well as an increasingly popular Yorkshire Rose Challenge. The next year will see these and a number of additional events such as BEAR GRYLLS : MISSION BEAVER, CUB Centenary parties and camps and specific events for Scouts and Explorers become part of our county calendar and we look forward to welcoming all those attending. Training & development is at the heart of what we do. C onferences for GSL’s and DC’s have taken place in recent years and over the next twelve months many is support roles such as ADC’s and AGSL’s will be able to take part in training and the development of our county and dictricts. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for the contribution you have made to the County. Special thanks must go to the County Team and the Executive for their support to myself and for all their hard work. As always it is the adults who turn up week after week and spend hours planning activities who make South Yorkshire Scout County so special and who contribute so much to their communities. I wish you and your families all the very best for the coming year and look forward to it being another fantastic year for the County.

SHEFFIELD CHILDREN'S HOSPITAL The 1st Sheffield Children’s Hospital Scout Group is unique in South Yorkshire!

sometimes to a group. They deliver Scouting in a wholly unique style.

Every week hundreds of children, who are poorly and receiving life saving treatment, are invited by Kay, the Group Scout Leader, to take part in the 1st Sheffield Children’s Hospital Scout Group meeting.

Well over 2,000 children have benefitted from Scouting since they started the group 8 years ago and every child and visitor makes a “selfie” in the form of a drawn self portrait which the group keep in a scrap book; of which there are now 9! Their flag includes buttons and mementos sewn into it to represent specific children some of whom due to the nature of their illness are regulars.

Kay, Claire, Rob, Matt and the rest of the team are Super Scouts! Every week they turn up and provide activities for children admitted to hospital, they are fabulously caring and delightful with everyone they meet and they make a child’s stay in hospital all that more bearable and even fun! On a meeting night they collect children from the wards to come up to the Scout room and for those that are too ill to make it they organise activities at their bedside. The environment doesn’t matter, Leaders take the activities to the child, sometimes one on one,

2 South Yorkshire Scouts Impact Report 2015

It relies on donations to provide what they do and what they do they do in abundance, they bring smiles and enjoyment and above all relief from their illnesses and injuries to some very brave children. It is without doubt the most unique demonstration of Scouting, the Scout group and the leaders don’t just change lives they “make life better”.

ANDREW BULLOCK - CUB LEADER Andrew has been a lifelong Scout in the 180th Sheffield Hallam Scout Group. He has been wheelchair bound since birth but continues to participate as fully as he is able in all activities. As a Scout Andrew received the Cornwell Scout badge in recognition of his courage and devotion under suffering. Having given over 25 years of distinguished service to Scouting Andrew continues to fulfil his role as Cub Scout Leader to an exceptionally high standard and that he has done so with his disability makes his service that more remarkable but it is his service that deserves recognition on its own merits Andrew possesses a keen and insightful mind and he brings this to bear on his

programmes and activities. He possesses an excellent understanding of Young People and often themes his activities to issues that his section relates to, even if adults don’t! Andrew’s pack take part in the full range of activities and residential experiences as well as local community activities, such as to clear local woods and improve access for all. Although it would be easy to let his disability obscure the nature of his service, Andrew’s volunteering is recognised, as if should be, on the same basis as any other able bodied person. The programme Andrew delivers to his pack demonstrates a highly consistent quality and exceptionally high standard of activities.

Providing the grounding

to influence and develop the future In South Yorkshire we pride ourselves that we provide a 12 month rolling programme of free training delivered by professional and experienced trainers in flexible environments.

• Scouts had developed team working skills

Developing the leaders of today and tomorrow, South Yorkshire Scouting makes a significant contribution to the supply of labour in our county and the quality of skills and personal attributes derived from Scouting activities give our members a welcome head start when choosing a career or further education.

• Scouting helped to build character and personal development

Eighty nine percent of Scouts identified that Scouting had helped them to build ‘key skills’ including social, team working and leadership skills. Scouts, regardless of age and experience, are developing skills which meet the needs of employers and help strengthen organisations. In a recent survey external organisations said that staff within the workplace who had been involved in Scouting were above-average employees across a range of attributes. In particular around six out of ten employers said:

4 South Yorkshire Scouts Impact Report 2015

• Scouts showed respect for others, which was important when working with peers, customers and clients

• Scouts showed confidence and leadership ability. With twenty percent of 16-24 year olds currently unemployed it is now even more important that the skills developed by young people in Scouting are articulated in CVs and at interview. There is strong evidence that the skills and attributes developed from Scouting are attractive to and valued by employers from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Creating a first class

Activity resource to be proud of Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre is on a journey to be Yorkshire’s No1 scout activity centre, delivering adventure every day. We know where we are going, so how are we going to get there? Over the last 18 months the team and supporters of Hesley Wood have been working smart to give everyone a great experience; first class customer service, great instructors delivering adventurous and fun activities and an activity programme tailored to your needs. These are a few of the things to make your stay with us great. The feedback has been great too! “We heard that things had changed at Hesley and we wanted to give you the opportunity to prove what we had heard was true. Your team have been fantastic and our Scouts have had a fantastic time; well done. We will tell the leaders in our district, that things have changed for the better” 79th SHEFFIELD. Behind the scenes we have been working hard to make improvements around the site, so what has been going on and what is planned? One of our major improvements have been to our site toilets, both blocks now have hot running water, but the main change has been to our main toilet block which has had a total makeover, with new modern cubicles, sinks and hot powerful showers on demand. We have upgraded the disabled facilities to to a modern standard.

We have also increased our indoor accommodation capacity from 86 beds to 110 with the conversion of The Leatherland Building to be our forth indoor accommodation block, sleeping 24 with its own kitchen and dining area. Going forward we have two major projects. The first project we are currently working on is an upgrade of the site electrical installation. This will make the site safer but also bring us up to current standards allowing us to further develop buildings and improve amenities. Our other major project is improvements to The Howard Walker Building, which will include the Kitchen area, bathrooms, upgrade to the hot water system and the roof on the building. We will also be looking at redecorating internally and externally. The planned work to this building, for what is our main building used for both accommodation and conferencing, will bring it up to a standard that is long overdue. A lot of things have changed at Hesley Wood and each day we move forward. With the continued support from you we will make Hesley Wood Scout Activity Centre a centre that you can be proud of, a centre that you want to use and Yorkshire’s No1 scout activity centre.

We introduced the Scout Shop, supplying all your scouting need. This new venture is growing in popularity due to our flexible hours and personal service.
