EDITOR'S NOTE This issue marks the one-year anniversary of the launch of the school’s newsletter, and although we’re still near the start of the school year it’s nevertheless jam-packed with excitement from over the summer and the start of the new term. CELEBRATING GCSE SUCCESS

STAFF, STUDENTS, AND PARENTS CELEBRATE SUCCESS ON GCSE RESULTS DAY AT SOUTH WIRRAL HIGH SCHOOL.

G

CSE results once again demonstrated strength across the curriculum with students achieving excellent results in a wide range of subjects.

Notably, there was an improvement in attainment for Maths (71% A*-C) and English, especially English Literature (92% A*-C).

Nearly 70% of all entries were at a C grade or above. An excellent result. Over half of our students achieved five or more GCSEs including English and Maths.

There were some exceptional individual achievements including Zoe Ward (8A*s, 2As); Victoria Sawdon (3A*s 6As) Georgia Gibson (2A*s, 4As); Abigail Stewart (4A*s, 4As). Also, Sarah Davies (1A*, 8As); Jack Hamer (8As); Elliot Cockayne (2A*s, 3As); Luke Percy (1A*, 6As); Nathan Ferguson (7As) and Chris Moss (1A*, 4As).

SOUTH WIRRAL CELEBRATES A 99% PASS RATE AT ‘A’ LEVEL

‘A’ LEVEL STUDENTS AT SOUTH WIRRAL HIGH SCHOOL ARE CELEBRATING 99% PASS RATE; A REFLECTION OF STUDENTS AND STAFF’S HARD WORK AND DEDICATION.

ost students secured their first choice university by achieving A*, As and B grades, with a significant number destined for ‘redbrick’ (Russell Group) universities. Head Girl, Hannah Dobson will be studying Sport & Exercise Science BA (Hons) at the University of Leeds, Shaun Burr and Ryan Day will be studying Geography at The University of Liverpool. Lizzie Cook will embark on her Film Studies & English BA (Hons), as well as Ryan Ellison and Ami Whitford-Stark for BA (Hons) Philosophy. Another successful student, Connor Moss, will be studying Law with Philosophy, Jack Patterson for Law, Leah Reynolds for History and Caleb Salisbury for Business Management. A brilliant result and well-deserved.

Other students will go on to study Nursing, Accountancy, Psychology, Journalism, Education, Mechanical Engineering, Sports and Science, Dance, Cyber Security, Musical Theatre, and Acting.

Some students have also secured prestigious apprenticeships - a good alternative to university - in Quantity Surveying, Accounting & Engineering.

One hardworking student, Cameron Arrowsmith, attended our Employability workshops with the Young Chamber and will study Engineering at Liverpool John Moores University, alongside a fulltime apprenticeship at Markhams.

South Wirral recognise the value in university education and apprenticeships, understanding that each student is individual.

Many students are about to begin their university courses, the first steps to exciting careers, reflecting the variety of academic strength at South Wirral Sixth Form, recognised by Ofsted consistently for over a decade.

GEOGRAPHY TRIP OF A LIFE TIME: ICELAND

I

n June 2016 Mr. Jones, Miss Nicol & Mr. Haslem took 30 of the most eager Geography students at South Wirral High School to the tectonically active country of Iceland, (not to be confused with the vol-au-vent active supermarket of Iceland). The journey began at 1.45am on a Sunday morning outside the school gates to board a coach down to Heathrow, before a dash across the airport to our gate and finally a two-hour flight to Keflavik airport. Once landed and all accounted for we were whisked away to ‘Blue Lagoon,’ an outdoor set of thermal springs which attracts tourists from across the world for its warm waters and therapeutic mud which is apparently good for the skin. A few hours spent relaxing in the springs covered in mud, and everyone was ready to head out for dinner, the teachers letting the students

showcase their map reading skills by getting lost on purpose in Reykjavik. Once we had eaten everyone was ready to head back to the hotel for an early night and another day of Icelandic adventures.

The next day we embarked on the ‘Golden Circle’ tour where we were treated to such sites as the MidAtlantic Ridge – the divide between the North American plate and our Eurasian plate. Our next stop was the colossal Gullfoss waterfall to view the huge volume of water that runs off the glaciers that give the country its name. Our last stop was the Strokkur geyser where we experienced the erupting jets of boiling water but also the stench of sulphur in the air. After the tour about half, the group joined Mr. Jones and Mr. Haslem in Reykjavik central park to watch England crash out of the Euros to Iceland where we got to absorb the fantastic atmosphere as the country celebrated their win.

which we managed to walk behind and get suitably drenched. The tour also included a visit to the shoreline and volcanically formed basalt columns and a look out to the Atlantic Ocean. After our tour we all headed back to our hotel for one last meal together, a very Icelandic burger and chips before an early night to get ready for our flight back.

Very helpful for your exams! #5 It enhances your ability to concentrate When you read a book, you subconsciously focus on the activity. This means you will be able to concentrate more easily on other things too, which makes studying much easier. #6 Reading helps you develop an incredible imagination

#8 Reading is a great form of entertainment

You can read anywhere; it’s free and enjoyable when you’re reading a story or topic that particularly interests you. Why not read on a bus or train, or simply at home in your bedroom? You can escape into a wonderful and exciting world, through your book. Bliss.

We encourage all our students to read a number of novels and non-fiction throughout their school life for their pleasure. Other benefits include Education for life, Improved employability, and House Spirit.

If you are reading a brilliant story and are fully engaged, you will also imagine how the characters are feeling. By drawing on your own experiences and memories, you can imagine how you would feel in the same situation. #7 Reading will help you do better at school Reading will not just assist you with English but in all subjects!

STUDENT DESTINATIONS 2016 All these practical tasks, alongside University, are helping me learn so much, it’s mind-blowing!

WE MET WITH CAMERON AT HIS PLACE OF WORK, MARKHAMS LTD, WHERE HE HAS BEGUN HIS HIGH-LEVEL APPRENTICESHIP.

Markhams is a practice of professionals providing Project Management, Quantity Surveying, and CDM services to select clients.” Markhams Ltd. His Quantity Surveying Apprenticeship includes studying a part-time degree, BSc Quantity Surveying BA (Hons) at Liverpool John Moores University. We asked Cameron about his first few months in the ‘real world’ and how life is after South Wirral High School Sixth Form.

“Now, I’m in the adult world; I feel excited about my future, and am learning so much already. When I began my apprenticeship, this summer, I had to complete a CS test (Constructions Skills) to ensure I was able to be safe ‘on site’ because of the nature of the business. So far, I have assisted on ten site visits, including the most interesting one so far, Ogden’s Tobacco Factory, Everton, Liverpool that is being converted into apartments by Liverpool Mutual Homes (LMH). I enjoyed that one particularly!

and A3 paper. I also update the company database, with materials and goods information. I also have looked at the M & E (Mechanical Electrical drawings); that decide where things like sockets should be placed, considering the type of customer who may live there.

One visit was for a care scheme, so additional considerations were taken into account, for clients with restricted mobility, to be able to live easily within the space.

As well as my apprenticeship at Markhams, I’m studying a part-time degree at Liverpool John Moores University, and go every Monday from 9am to 7pm. It’s a long day, but all of the students on my course are apprentices, so we’re in the same boat. At the moment we’re doing Construction Technology & Academic Digita; Literature - basically, learning to write professionally and technically!

I want to recognise how South Wirral High School helped me get here.

Doing Drama A-Level was a huge factor in helping me communicate well in different situations, so thanks to Mrs. Arnold (Head of Drama)! Also, I joined the Young Chamber scheme, through school, and won the Young Chamber of the Year award (at South Wirral). Young Chamber coached me with interview techniques, and I completed the Employability Month with them at school, so I felt more prepared when I was looking for apprenticeship opportunities.

I am so happy Markham’s gave me this brilliant opportunity; I really enjoy working for them and have felt welcomed by the team.

GIFTED SIXTH FORMER’S WEEK AT IMPERIAL COLLEGE LONDON

llen relished the opportunity to travel to London (for the first time), on an all paid ‘taster’ of undergrad life at a university ranked number 4 in the Russell Group table.

As well as practical sessions in the Chemistry Department conducting fun experiments, Ellen enjoyed the social aspect of uni life, hanging out with other Sixth Form students, from varied backgrounds and locations all over the country.

I had a chance to experience life at a leading university and gain an insight into what it’s like to be an undergrad student. I had never been to London before, let alone travel there by myself! My anxious and proud parents waved

me off at Lime Street Station, Liverpool, at a gruelling 6am, where my journey to a taste of freedom began. When I got to London, it was so busy. People were rushing everywhere - that’s what everyone says, but it’s true! I couldn’t almost believe how big London seemed. I had a rush of adrenaline but was so happy to have arrived in one piece! Before heading off on the tube, I was starving, so hunted around for a bakery. £5 for a waffle! I’m definitely in London now, I thought! After savouring the most expensive waffle in the

world, I successfully navigated, after getting lost, the underground to reach my destination, South Kensington, which was more beautiful than I ever imagined.

I met up with other students, who were down to earth, and lovely, and from all areas of the country, such as Essex and Nottingham, and as into science as me! We got our timetable and met with our student mentors, who made us feel welcome and relaxed.

The schedule included academic sessions during the daytime, in which all subject content was aimed at us as if we were first-year undergrads. Some of our practical sessions included synthesizing esters (perfume), Luminol (the chemical in glow sticks) and silicone polymers. I really enjoyed it.

Every evening, activities were held to keep us entertained, including meals out in London, and going out on campus, just like being real students! On the last night, I

attended a formal dinner at the Millennium Hotel, and many of the academically acclaimed staff at Imperial College attended. It was such an unbelievably fantastic evening; I felt incredibly privileged!

PARENT TESTIMONIAL: MY DAUGHTER EXCELLED AT SOUTH WIRRAL

Before Hannah started in year 7, I had had very little contact with South Wirral and didn’t know other parents who had children at the school. Therefore when she didn’t pass the 11+, I had initial concerns as to whether Hannah would be happy at South Wirral as we both knew very little about the school. My main concern was whether Hannah would be pushed to her full potential. After her first week, however, I could see how settled Hannah was, and any prior worries had completely gone. From day one she has been encouraged to be the best that she can be.

As a parent, I really appreciated the phone calls and letters home praising Hannah for her progress and achievements. From the initial parents meeting during her first term, I saw how caring and approachable all the staff were.

I was particularly encouraged by Mrs. McCormack (she retired Easter 2016) who not only knew the names of every student in the school but would recognise and chat to each parent individually. As a result

of getting to know Hannah as an individual, the staff gave her the exact care and support she needed.

During her final year, in particular, Hannah had a lot on her plate with exams, head girl, and extracurricular duties but her teachers took the time to continuously check in with her to ensure she was happy and not becoming too overwhelmed.

The dedication of all of the staff was shown in the huge range of extra-curricular activities available all year round as well

as their extra exam and revision support during the exam period.

The relationship between the teachers and students was shown in the staff involvement in Dance/ Drama each year; they really set a great example for their students.

Hannah has thoroughly enjoyed her seven years at South Wirral, and I can’t thank the school enough for giving her the chance to shine. She has been encouraged to become more independent, to stand by her beliefs and morals to become the hard working, confident person she is today. South Wirral has a great team of staff, and I’d like to thank them all for everything that they have done for Hannah during her time at the school.

My first contact with South Wirral High School was while my daughter was still at primary school - she attended Kids Can Cook Club after school once a week with some friends; Mrs. Connelly in charge with two friendly Sixth Form student helpers and it was a great after school club for the primary school children.

I had heard excellent reports from parents of children already at South Wirral, and the special atmosphere at South Wirral’s open evening clinched it for us. My daughter started there in year 7, and she will be moving up to the Sixth Form in September, to study for her A-levels.

She was more nervous than most moving up to high school, and I was the naturally concerned parent! However, she loves sports and games and within a week or so she was staying after school most days for netball, football, tag rugby, rounders, and dance. I was

We hosted another successful bake sale on September’s staff Inset day and subsequent break times to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

MY LIVERPOOL MUSIC SCENE WORK EXPERIENCE

A

s part of work experience at college, I was given the opportunity to work with and for Chris Carney of Open Culture and the Co-Founder and Producer of Threshold Festival of Music & Art, Liverpool. I was able to feel what it was like to be involved in the world of music management and I believe it has helped my future career prospects in this area.

My first task was to find and review music acts and decided whether they would be suitable for certain events. This allowed me to hear and analyse all kinds of music and then left me to decide whether they suit particular venues or events. It was also interesting seeing what equipment individual acts required if they were to perform live and let me see a more technical side of live music performances.

Another part of my work experience was attending and working at the Arab Arts Festival that took place in Sefton Park Palm House during the summer. This was a really hands-on event and required a lot of concentration and efficiency from all involved in making it run smoothly. I handled all sorts of things revolving around artistic liaison such as making sure the artists had all their equipment, ensuring they were comfortable in-between performances and that they knew when to prepare for going on stage.

I met several unique music acts that I would never have met otherwise and this helped me witness more than the typical rock/pop music events that I had only previously seen. Again, there was a technical aspect to the event that meant plugging in equipment, making sure all the equipment worked correctly and then also packing away all the equipment and cables at the end of the day. This event has helped

me understand how to handle a live and fast paced atmosphere.

I also took part in the Flyover Project which saw the Churchill Way flyover in Liverpool become pedestrianized for one day to be host to events and free up a large section of space in Liverpool city centre. The project focuses on Urban Regeneration and wants to make a vibrant and eco-friendly space in Liverpool. This was shown when I was helping set up for the day and was transporting several plants up and down the flyover and all sorts of creative sculptures to be displayed for visitors.

My role was stewarding, and I was never left without anything to do. I was supervising different live acts throughout the day with dance teachers, interpretive dancers and comedy troupes all performing at some point of the day. I also got to receive feedback from those visiting the project, and I asked them questions on what they thought. The general consensus was that the project was

positive to Liverpool and could draw large crowds in the future.

My work experience was such a unique experience I could take part in, and I feel privileged to have even been offered such an opportunity, organised through South Wirral Sixth Form. Chris Carney really helped me feel welcome, and I

learned a lot and contributed a lot to all the events I worked on.

As a result of my reliability, I have been asked to work as a volunteer at threshold Festival 2017, which is another fantastic opportunity to continue gaining more experience working in the music industry.
