ALICE’S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND REHEARSALS ARE WELL UNDERWAY FOR THIS YEARS SUMMER SHOW!

A

n original Musical hosted by the Performance Faculty for one night only! With original music composed by students, a live band and a mixture of Ks3/4 and 5 students, the show is a collaborative piece that involves dancers, actors and musicians from across the faculty. We also have a production team which have designed all lighting, set, props and costumes themselves.

here will be a matinee performance for our local primaries on Monday 9th July followed by the evening performance on Tuesday 10th July in the Hall, with a 7pm start. Get your tickets now at £3 each from the Main Office. Once they’re gone they’re gone!

LOWER SCHOOL PRESENTATION EVENING ON WEDNESDAY 2ND MAY WE HELD OUR ANNUAL LOWER SCHOOL PRESENTATION EVENING, IN WHICH WE CELEBRATED THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF OUR YEAR 7, 8 AND 9 STUDENTS.

r Goodwin was joined on stage by local primary headteachers to present trophies and certificates to students who have excelled this year in their studies, progress and commitment to school activities.

Two Year 9 Music students provided stunning performances during the interlude. Sharna Harding gave a fantastic

performance of Andra Day’s ‘Rise Up’, followed by Will Humphreys covering Kodaline’s ‘All I Want’ along with some fantastic dancing during the instrumental sections.

After the remaining certificates and trophies had been awarded, Sixth Form @ South Wirral Head Boy Josh Clague read a vote of thanks. In this, he expressed gratitude on behalf of South

Wirral to our primary guests, before students presented the headteachers with gifts.

Mr Goodwin concluded the evening by thanking parents for their attendance and the support they give to their children and congratulating students once again on their fantastic achievements.

LEGO ROBOTICS TAKE OVER SOUTH WIRRAL HIGH SCHOOL THE TECHNOLOGY FACULTY INVESTED IN 10 SETS OF LEGO’S ‘MINDSTORMS’ ROBOTICS PACKAGES, AND HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH A NUMBER OF DIFFERENT YEAR GROUPS TO EXPAND THEIR KNOWLEDGE OF CODING. Sessions with Year 8 involved students working in groups of 2 or 3, coding pre-built robots to move around. This was initially in straight lines, before progressing to add turns and eventually moving onto using an Ultrasonic sensor- which stopped the robot from colliding into each other, objects in the room or other students! The robots were programmed to turn away when they came within a preprogrammed distance from these obstacles.

Students then completed challenges to test out their coding skills.

Programming the Lego robots uses a wide variety of important skills, not just their knowledge of code. These include:

• Persistence • Team work • Analytical • Mathematics • Problem solving • Debugging We were also delighted to welcome Year 6 students from Childer Thornton & Little Sutton Cof E Primaries who worked with the with robots, programming them to move around and getting to know students from another school - making new friends through technology. These students will be returning back to school during our Welcome Day on Wednesday 11th July to aid in their transition to secondary school.

Moving forward, in the summer term Mrs Griffiths and Mrs Wigfall are planning on setting up a Robotics Club where students will be able to build robots from scratch and develop a much deeper knowledge of coding.

PRIMARY PARTNERSHIP SPORTS UPDATE YEAR 5 AND 6 FOOTBALL LEAGUE: Well done to Christ the King Primary school who took first and second place in the year 6 and 6 football league.

YEAR 5 AND 6 NETBALL LEAGUE: Well done to Stanton Road primary school who won all of the games and took 1st place I the netball league. A very special

well done to Higher Bebington Junior School who came second however had an impressive +38 goal difference.

FAREWELL TO OUR ITALIAN EXCHANGE FINE ART STUDENTS

F

arewell to our Italian exchange Fine Art students Federica and Gaia who joined South Wirral High school this academic year. The students have brought enthusiasm, love of learning and their own ‘sunshine’ to the art rooms. Their artwork, excellent command of English and determination to learn new skills has been inspiring based on themes of Identity Punk Culture and Identity British flags. We wish them very success in their future academic studies and are delighted to know they will continue to pursue their new artistic talents in Italy.

Good luck girls and thank you for lovely artwork and happy memories. You will be missed!

MR GOODWIN DEDICATES HALF MARATHON TO YEAR 11 STUDENTS

I

n late May, Mr Goodwin ran the Manchester Half Marathon. The event recalled the terrorist attack which affected the lives of some of our students, staff and their families. Mr Goodwin dedicated his run to all our students in year 11 who are experiencing their own marathon in the exam season and are showing the same grit and determination.

SIXTH FORM GRADUATION & AWARDS CEREMONY T he Sixth Form Graduation ceremony was a great success this year, with staff and students gathering together one final time and appreciate everyone’s hard work and commitment.

The slideshow of school photos from way back in Year 7 were a sweet reminder of their youth and how far they’d come in their time at South Wirral High School and Sixth Form.

The trophy winners were truly deserving and the comments from staff most genuine.

The musical interlude provided

by Year 9 student Sharna accompanied by Sixth Form @ South Wirral Year 12 student Leon was outstanding and just shows the talents of our students in the arts! Leon ‘played us out’ during coffee and doughnuts to end the event.
