FROM THE HELM

STEVE MORRELL,

EDITOR

The End of Unwarranted Boat Inspections in Florida? Tired of being stopped, boarded and inspected by the state and/or local marine police when they have no probable cause to stop you—but just want to inspect your boat? Tired of being boarded and inspected several times over a short period of time? A new Florida law could end that practice. In the March issue, I reported on a proposal by Florida State Representative Ritch Workman who got inspected so many times he introduced a law to stop it. I commented on it that I didn’t think it had much of a chance of passing, but guess what? It will be the law in Florida on July 1. I reported that the words “if probably cause exists” were proposed to be added to the law that allows law enforcement to board and inspect boats. Those words were not put in, but the words “unless there is reasonable suspicion that a violation” has occurred were put in and that is sufficient enough to end the unwarranted inspections (I hope). You must first fulfill a few requirements, though. Your boat must have been inspected by a law enforcement officer, whereby you receive a decal signifying that you passed. Then the decal must be properly displayed “within 6 inches of the inspected vessel’s properly displayed vessel registration decal.” If you are a non-motorized vessel that is not required to be registered, the decal must be above the waterline on the forward half of the port side of the boat. The language says inspection by a law enforcement officer, which means the USCG Auxiliary inspection stickers that have been around for years do not fulfill the requirement.

As mentioned above, an officer can still stop you if they have “reasonable suspicion” that a violation has occurred and the new law includes words reiterating that an officer can still stop “a vessel for any other lawful purpose.” That’s all understandable. For more on the law go to page 17. (To read the law Google this: Florida bill HB 703). Keep in mind that the Coast Guard (and any other federal officer) can still stop you under their rules. This new law is state law and only affects state (and local) law enforcement. The only question I have is how long is the sticker good for? A year, two years, three years...? I am surprised that passage of this law has not been given more publicity as it is a major milestone in my opinion. Other states have this rule already in effect, and it makes perfect sense. I have reported on complaints from other citizens in other states who are also sick and tired of being stopped and inspected many times over. It was the experience of State Representative Workman that instigated this new law, but I have also been reporting complaints from Florida boaters about unwarranted inspection boardings for over a decade. It’s too bad that it has gotten to the point where a state lawmaker has to have had a bad experience to get something changed. Someone’s not listening. But hurrah for this change and Representative Workman’s efforts. Go out and get your decal.

WIND ROSES: Each wind rose shows the strength and direction of the prevailing winds in the area and month. These have been recorded over a long period of time. In general, the lengths of the arrows indicate how often the winds came from that direction. The longer the arrow, the more often the winds came from that direction. When the arrow is too long to be printed in a practical manner, a number is indicated.

The number in the center of the circle shows the percentage of the time that the winds were calm. The lengths of the arrows plus the calms number in the center add up to 100 percent. The number of feathers on the arrow indicates the strength of the wind on the Beaufort scale (one feather is Force 1, etc.). Wind Roses are taken from Pilot Charts.

5th Annual Atlantic Cup Race from Charleston, SC, to Portland, ME, May 28 The Atlantic Cup, presented by 11th Hour Racing, is a dedicated professional Class 40 race held annually in the U.S. with a focus on running an environmentally responsible event. The first leg of the race starts Saturday, May 28, in Charleston, SC. At 1,008 nautical miles of offshore racing, and the only race to sail around both capes (Hatteras and Cod), the Atlantic Cup is the longest and toughest race in the United States. Teams of two will race 648nm from Charleston to New York City. After a brief stopover in New York, teams will race a second leg of 360nm to Portland, Maine where the race will culminate the weekend of June 11 with an inshore series. As with the previous editions, the Atlantic Cup will offer environmentally themed events to coincide with racing in each city, and a robust kids education program, combining offshore sailing and the marine environment. Race organizers will again calculate the Atlantic Cup’s carbon footprint and carbon-offset supplier, “We Are Neutral,” will offset it at the conclusion of the race. A comprehensive list of the sustainability actions of the Atlantic Cup can be found at www.atlanticcup.org/sustainability. The Atlantic Cup began in May 2011 as an annual event, but became a biennial event in 2014. Boats competing are Class40s, which are monohulls designed for shorthanded racing. www.AtlanticCup.org.

Okeechobee Water Level Goes down about 15 Inches Since March As of press date in early April, Lake Okeechobee was at 15.01 feet above sea level. This makes the navigational depth for Route 1, which crosses the lake, 8.95 feet, and the navigational depth for Route 2, which goes around the southern coast of the lake, 7.15 feet. Bridge clearance at Myakka was at 48.91 feet. For those interested in seeing the daily height of the lake, navigation route depths and bridge clearance, go to http://w3.saj.usace. army.mil/h2o/currentLL.shtml (copy this address exactly as it is here with upper and lower cases). BoatUS Foundation Grassroots Grants: New Policy Allows Year-Around Application for Funds for Boating Safety & Clean Boating Projects In February, the BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water made it easier for nonprofit organizations including community-based groups, boat clubs, angling and environmental organizations, USCG Auxiliary, or US Power Squadrons to apply for a Grassroots Grant. Started over 25 years ago, the BoatUS member-funded grant program provides groups up to $10,000 to help educate boaters on safe and clean boating topics. The Foundation announced a completely new “365-day rolling” grant application process that allows applicants to apply at any time throughout the year, speeding the review process and allowing more flexibility in funding projects. Submitting a short letter of intent explaining their idea is all an applicant needs to do to start the process. If the idea is strong and meets Grassroots Grant program guidelines, BoatUS Foundation will ask for a full proposal. Gone is having to wait for the once-a-year “cycle” of funding, and groups will have better ability to apply for funds when they need them. Decision-making will also be greatly expedited. Past projects have ranged from public service announcements on the effects of boating under the influence and installing fishing line recycling bins, to hands-on education about the effects of marine debris and a unique airborne blimp adorned with boating safety messages. Since 1989, the foundation has awarded more than $1.3 million to organizations that have developed creative projects to promote safe and clean boating on their local waterways. For more information or how to apply, go to BoatUS.org/grants. News & Views for Southern Sailors

Gunboat Up for Auction — Company Continues to Build Boats As Gunboat goes up for auction, the company continues to stay in operation with six boats under construction—a custom Gunboat 78 near completion and five 55-footers under construction. The company continues with 60 people. Although Gunboat founder Peter Johnstone stepped down and is now serving as the broker for the company, previous COO Barry Correll took over as president as the company enters Chapter 11 restructuring. The company was seeking bidders and the deadline to get bids in was March 29. The company is being auctioned off as a single lot—in hopes of keeping the company alive.

A Boat Slip for $4.75 Million? Yes, that is correct. The slip, located in Nantucket, MA, was sold in February to a group that is basically Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Alphabet (parent company of Google), and his wife Wendy.

What a concept! It is engineered to be easily serviced. • Marine engines using Kubota Diesels from 13.5 to 100 HP • Including Atomic 4 replacements and saildrive engines • Serpentine belt drive system for alternator is now standard on every propulsion engine

The slip is one of only three deepwater slips in Nantucket and is big enough to handle a boat 156 feet long. It is one of three deepwater slips of similar size and value in the harbor. Wendy Schmidt bought a house in Nantucket in 1999 and has become involved in the local community. She and her husband have financed oceanographic research and environmental projects. She built a fuel-efficient 46-meter (152 feet) ketch, Elfie, and founded 11th Hour Racing, an organization aimed at protecting the world’s oceans. The group’s aim is to engage sailors and the maritime industry in protecting oceans by sponsoring regattas, sailing teams and promoting positive environmental practices. Wendy and Eric purchased a 46-foot wood sloop and sailed it to the Caribbean in 2007. She learned to sail, and later, her husband gave her a Swan 80, which she helmed— she helms her own boats—in the Heineken Regatta in St. Maarten. They won the race. She later built Elfie and was closely involved in the design and building of the boat. For more about 11th Hour Racing, go to www. 11thhourracing.org.

Mummified Body of Sailor Found Aboard Drifting Yacht In February, Philippine fishermen found a drifting sailboat, a Jeanneau Sun Magic 44 named Sayo, about 40 miles off the coast of the Philippines. The boat was dismasted and part of the cabin underwater. The fishermen found a mummified body of a man sitting at the navigation table—as though he had died suddenly and unexpectedly, although cause of death has not been officially determined. The man is presumed to be Manfred Fritz Bajorat, a German national who had not been heard of since 2009. He was identified by

papers found on the boat. The man had written a letter to his wife Claudia who died from cancer in 2010. The Fishermen righted the boat and towed it to the Philippines where the police were inspecting it and the body. It is believed that dry ocean winds, hot temperatures and the salty air preserved the body. Another German world sailor said that he met Bajorat in 2009 in Mallorca and stated “He was a very experienced sailor. I don’t believe he would have sailed into a storm. I believe the mast broke after Manfred was already dead.” For those interested in seeing photos of the boat and the mummified body, Google “Manfred Fritz Bajorat” in Google images.

Florida Governor Signs Anti-Anchoring Legislation Surprising no one, Florida Governor Rick Scott, passed HB 1051, which was the anchoring bill SOUTHWINDS reported on in the April issue (“Short Tacks” section), that limits anchoring in certain areas of southeast Florida were waterfront property owners complained about boats anchoring in the public waters near their homes. The Governor signed the bill on March 25. The law goes into effect on July 1.

Florida Passes Law Limiting Law Enforcement Boat Inspections and Another on Boat Operation On March 25, Governor Rick Scot passed Florida bill HB 703 which changes the definition of reckless boating from being defined as endangering anyone, including those on the boat, to endangering only those not on the boat. The law also lessens the ability of law enforcement to inspect boats. Under the law, law enforcement can no longer use the pretext of conducting safety inspections to stop and search boats if the boats display proper safety-inspection decals. They can still stop a boat if probably cause exists or reasonable suspicion that violations have occurred. The safety sticker must be properly displayed on the boat to qualify. Florida has had a volunteer safety inspection sticker for many years. The two provisions were a result of State Representative Rick Workman’s efforts after he was stopped on his boat several times over the course of a year for safety inspections and he got tired of it. He was also warned of boating recklessly when he was idling and his children were sitting on the bow with their feet dangling over the edge, the officer telling him that was reckless boat operation. He pushed to change the definition of reckless to not include endangering those on board the boat. The law also included a discount of 12 percent on a boat’s annual registration cost, if a boater shows that they have purchased an emergency locator device. The 12 percent discount will be offered for one year after the law goes into effect. The original Senate bill had a 25 percent, permanent discount in it, but the House would not fund that

amount, nor include the discount for more than one year. The Senate will have to vote next year to continue it if they choose to do so. This provision was put in the law as a result of efforts by the families of two young boaters who were lost off the coast of Jupiter, FL, in July 2015. Emergency locator devices would almost certainly have located the boys and saved them. The bill becomes law on July 1.

Sales Trend in Boats 2005-2015 The boating industry trade magazine, Trade Only, reported in its April issue trends in brokerage boat sales over three one-year periods: 2005, 2010 and 2015. Pay close attention in the channel, but, there is plenty of water inside.

Marineland An undiscovered gem on the ICW!! By Fred Braman Located between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, enter the marina’s well marked channel on the ocean side of the AICW (MP 797), just south of Green marker 87.

M

y Catalina 30, Rhombus, and I were homeward bound after a two-month trip that included the Northern Abaco Islands. I had dropped off my crew, friend Trevor Rhody, when we landed at Cape Canaveral, after an uneventful overnight Gulf Stream crossing. Loping along and not covering too many miles in a day, I picked up another crew for the final days until returning to home port at the Marina at Ortega Landing in Jacksonville, FL: grandson Grant Kruse, 16, an old Rhombus hand and welcomed help. I picked out a couple of “teen friendly” stops to make sure that the “crew” was suitably entertained. Between Daytona Beach and St. Augustine, at AICW milepost (MP) 797, sits a tiny town, but a big place to visit that has become a personal ICW favorite. It’s the polar opposite of glint and glitter. There are no stores, only one good restaurant and watering hole nearby, not even a stoplight if you travel through the area by car: Marineland, with an after-work population five, is a delightful place with plenty to do: walk on an almost empty beach, swim with dolphins, hike or kayak in the Guana Tolomato Matanzas National Research Reserve, or visit the University of Florida’s Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience. The only nightlife is watching for fireflies, but if visiting Whitney’s Sea Turtle Hospital or taking in a UF lecture— like “Sex in the Soil”—sounds like fun, this is a place for you. If you are really lucky, you’ll catch an occasional re-run of Tarzan (1938) or The Creature from the Black Lagoon (1954), both filmed on location at Marineland. My daughter Monica and son-in-law Matt dropped Grant off in Daytona Beach at the Halifax Harbor Marina, also a teen-friendly place with its famed beach and boardwalk. We enjoyed the day at the beach and on the Daytona Beach Pier, returning to the boat in time to grill a couple of hamburgers and get ready for the morning’s departure. With only 32 miles to travel the next day, we slept a bit late

waiting for Daytona’s restricted bridge opening period to end. A favorable Halifax River current had us nearing our Marineland destination by early afternoon. With room for only about 25 boats, we had made a reservation with Marina Assistant Dockmaster Eric Ziecheck. Marineland Marina saves a number of slips for transients and also has a long floating dock for boats large, wide and small. However, as the marina’s popularity as an ICW stopover grows, it’s a good idea to call ahead and reserve a spot. Scheduled for the marina’s floating dock on this trip, we

were soon tied up with my grandson handling the postdocking chores. As soon as we were settled, our first activity was visiting Marineland Dolphin Adventure. Conceived by a small group of investors that included Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, Douglas Burden, and Count Ilya Tolstoy, grandson of the famous writer, Marine Studios opened its doors in 1938 as a resounding 30,000 hopeful tourists clogged Highway A1A south of St. Augustine. Later renamed Marineland of Florida, it was billed as the world’s first ocea-

While nearing Marineland, we kept an eye out for one of the town’s most famous residents, who some say can still be seen crawling out of nearby mangroves and creeks! narium and made the real life undersea drama accessible to all for viewing, study and filming. It was a place where all marine life—fish, sharks, sea turtles, and dolphins—lived together as they would in the wild. The attraction thrived for decades, thrilling tourists with trained dolphin shows, small whales, and other creatures from the deep. Marineland provided aquatic shows for the public as well as facilities for the study of marine life by scientists, greatly increasing the world’s knowledge of marine animals, their habits and behavior. As a high school freshman from Michigan, I visited Marineland just a few years after the famous scaly fellow climbed out of a nearby dark lagoon, ter-

rorizing moviegoers. Believing that people were more likely to engage in conservation behavior if they could touch and care for a live animal, the venue reopened in 2006 after a major reconstruction with a variety of interactive programs designed to create a personal connection between visitors and the majestic dolphins. Today, Marineland Dolphin Adventure is operated by the Georgia Aquarium, a non-profit dedicated to aquatic ani-

mal conservation and research. Children and adults can swim with dolphins, touch and feed them, act as a trainer for a day, and even collaborate with dolphins in creating artwork! Readers interested in the history of this interesting venue, should consult a major source for this article: Marineland – Images of America by Cheryl Messinger and Terran McGinnis, available on site or at Amazon.com. The educational focus of the theme park fits in well with the rest of the community, as the entire town is cemented in marine science and education. Founded in 1974, the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience grew from a collaboration between Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney and Dr. Sam Gurin, a professor of Biochemistry at the University of Florida. The Whitney Laboratory is a cutting edge biomedical and biotechnology research center with a focus on the problems of human health, natural resources and the environment, the training of future scientists, and contributing to public education and science policy. Whitney researchers use marine animals, which don’t get the same illnesses as humans, to study human health. The study of the acute smell capability of lobsters to learn about human stroke susceptibility, use of jelly fish-like organisms as models of human embryo development, using transparent juvenile zebra fish and green fluorescent protein to study genetic activity, and the amazing capability of segmented worms to regenerate themselves with implications for the growth of human tissues, are only a few examples of research areas. Other areas of study include Everglades restoration science and artificial oyster reef

replacement. On the education front, Whitney’s “Research Experience for Undergraduates” program has been training future scientists for thirty years. Active in community outreach, Whitney’s Center for Marine Studies “Scientist for a Day Program” provides weekly science experience and education to K-12 school groups and has several lifelong learning programs, including an evening lecture series for adults. The recently opened Sea Turtle Hospital at Whitney Laboratory provides a northeast Florida care center and is dedicated to sea turtle rehabilitation, research, and education. Marineland is situated in the Guana Tolomato Matanzas (GTM) National Research Reserve, over 60,000 acres of ocean, beaches, salt and freshwater marsh, mangrove estuary, marine hammock, and pine flat-woods. The best way to enjoy the GTM Reserve is to go out into it. Ripple Effect EcoTours and Adventure Outfitters is located at the marina and offers kayak rental, and both kayak and jet boat tours aboard the vegetable-oil-powered Ripple Effect 1. Both tours explore the biologically rich Jordan and Mellon Island sites that are part of Faver-Dykes State Park, the Princess Place Preserve and the pristine Pellicer Creek Aquatic Preserve. Ripple Effect tour guides are certified UF Florida Master Naturalist Program graduates, guaranteeing comprehensive ecological and cultural tours in this beautiful coastal system. There is one venue of a different sort that also deserves mention and is a good evening choice if taking in a Whitney lecture is not possible. The Matanzas Inlet Restaurant is one

of those local gold mines with great food and an always lively crowd. Located at the inlet just over two miles north on A1A from the marina, it presents a small transportation problem for boat travelers, but my own transportation technique solves this problem. I just ask anyone at the marina to drop me and my crew off on their way home for the night. A short stay in the bar after dinner, and a little begging, results in a return ride to the marina. It’s worked every time. If by chance it doesn’t work, you need to walk off that pile of peel-and-eat shrimp anyway! A final benefit of a stop in Marineland is picking a good time to leave, especially if headed north. Marineland is an easy day’s travel north or south to nice destinations. However, northbound cruisers must pass through the area of the Matanzas Inlet with its notoriously skinny water, a few ICW miles from the marina. Matanzas has a large tidal range and staying in Marineland allows cruisers to pick a good “tide time” to transit the area. Nearby is Fort Matanzas, an 18th Century Spanish fort that dominates the Matanzas River and guards the back door to St. Augustine. The fort passed its only test, foiling an invasion by British General Oglethorpe in 1742. Today, cruisers can anchor in front of the fort in plenty of water and, without fear of cannon fire, visit by dinghy. Marineland Marina (www.marinelandmarina.com, or call 904-814-9886) is terrific anytime—always pleasant and often educational. Just a trip to the beach and an evening barbecue make for a great visit. Making the visit memorable

requires a couple of days and a little prior planning. For a behind-the-scenes look at Whitney Laboratory, contact Jessica Long, director of Development and External Relations, at jessicalong@whitney.ufl.edu, or call 904-4614018. The evening lectures are free and no reservation is necessary. Go to www.whitney.ufl.edu for a schedule. Ripple Effect Ecotours are available on most days. Give them a call at 904-347-1565, or check the schedule and book online at www.rippleeffectecotours.com. Marineland Dolphin Adventure can also be booked online. For a complete description of their interactive programs and to book, go to www.marineland.net. Do yourself a favor, stop at Marineland. It’s a great waterway stop and just may be the biggest little town in the country! Many thanks to the people of Marineland Town who assisted with this article, especially: Eric Ziecheck and Chris Kelly of Ripple Effect Tours; Leslie Babonis, the mayor of Marineland and a scientist at Whitney Laboratory; Terran McGinnis, Marineland Manager of Education and Community Development, and Whitney’s Jessica Long. Capt. Fred Braman, USN (ret) and his wife Louise live in Fleming Island, FL. Fred writes about the places he visits in his Catalina 30, Rhombus. He is the author of Too Old Not to Go, a chronicle of his single-handed voyage around the Bahamas, available at Amazon.

2016 Florida Everglades Challenge By Steve Morrell Cover: Channing Boswell’s self-designed and built 16-foot foam and glass pilothouse trimaran, Finger Mullet. Boswell came in seventh in Class 5 (multihulls). This was Boswell’s seventh time in the EC. Photo by Steve Morrell.

T

he 2016 Florida Everglades Challenge got off to a good 7am start on Saturday morning on March 5, with 114 boats starting (two did not start). Starting at Fort DeSoto Beach in St. Petersburg, FL, the Challenge ends at Key Largo—a 300-mile trip down Florida’s Southwest Coast (depending on the route taken, the distance can be 260

miles). Conditions were relatively calm, although they were similar to last year’s start, which had many problems with the Coast Guard calling off the event on day one after they had to rescue some kayakers who overturned in Tampa Bay (see May issue, page 40, Back Issues at Southwinds Magazine.com). The northwest wind was coming from the

same direction as last year, blowing a little weaker, but building quickly to a good 15 knots—but the incoming tide was not coming in against the wind and waves like it did last year, which created a washing-machine effect in Tampa Bay. There were 90 entrants in this year’s Challenge, and another 17 in the Ultra Marathon, which is held concurrently, as is the start of the Florida Ultimate Challenge, which had nine entrants. The Ultra Marathon goes to Cape Haze Marina, 67 miles south of the start. It is also the first checkpoint for the Everglades Challenge, as well as for the Ultimate Challenge, which circumnavigates Florida in a 1200-mile journey. Generally, the kayaks go down the inside in the ICW and—weather permitting—the sailboats go on the outside. Many kayaks have sails, but they still go down the ICW, although many of the Hobie Adventure Island kayaks, along with a few others similar to them, are rigged with amas (outrigged hulls), making them a sailing trimaran. They regularly go down the outside unless conditions are unbearable. This year, like last year, most went down the outside in the lee of the Florida coast with a northwest wind creating great sailing conditions for heading south. No major mishaps occurred beyond the usual equipment failures that will always happen when almost 100 small craft travel at least 260 miles in such conditions. First to finish was Spawn (technically known as Spawn of Frankenscot), a Tampa Bay 22, crewed by St. Petersburg’s Jeff Linton (owner of Masthead Sailing Gear), Jahn Tihansky (head of the U.S. Naval Academy’s Offshore Sailing Team) and OH Rodgers (designer of Spawn). 36

Not only did they come in first, they beat the previous monohull record by 12 hours. They arrived at the first checkpoint, 67 miles, at Cape Haze Marina in 7 hours and 48 minutes. They reached the finish in Key Largo after 1 day, 12 hours and 46 minutes, which means they arrived the following evening after the start. The wind was on their beam or aft of their beam 75 percent of the sail down the coast, which was in the lee of the northeast winds, making for smooth sailing. They left the beach at DeSoto with spinnaker flying. Of the 90 entrants, 35 made it to Key Largo, four to the third checkpoint at Flamingo, 24 to the second check point at Chokoloskee and 21 to the first checkpoint at Cape Haze. Five did not make it to Cape Haze and one did not start. In the Florida Ultra Marathon, which goes to Cape Haze, out of the 17 entrants, 15 made it to the finish, the first after 10 hours, 4 minutes. The last finished after 1 day, 3 hours and 53 minutes. In the Ultimate Challenge, with nine entrants, six finished—unlike the last Ultimate Challenge in 2014 which had three entrants and only one finishing (team of 71-year-old Bill Fite and 51-year-old Neil Calore, with Bill Fite finishing this year in fifth). One did not start and another two did not finish. (nor did they make it to Cape Haze). First to finish was the team of Larry Ferber and Vladimir Eremeev, finishing the 1200-mile trip in 17 days, 23 hours and 56 minutes. The last entrant finished after 28 days, 3 hours, 16 minutes—four weeks of traveling. Shown here are some of the boats—at least 114—on the beach the afternoon before the start. Many are custom made, some designed and built by their owners. News & Views for Southern Sailors

New Sailing Instruction Program for Adults at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron By Patricia Moore

A

s I unrolled my yoga mat on the floor next to my friend Julie, she sat up and whispered, “I’ve just landed the job of my dreams.” “Tell me after the class,” I said, wondering what the job of her dreams was. After all, she’d been teaching rafting in North Carolina the last few summers. Julie Forbes, who has been sailing since she was a baby— strapped to the mast of her parents’ sailboat—had just landed the job of her dreams. She grew up in New York and sailed on Long Island Sound, was taught by her mother and father on the Atlantic, and has been sailing ever since. She purchased her first sailboat, a Catalina, with the inheritance her father left her. She’s been part of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron since 1980 and a Luffing Lassie since 2003. Sitting on the dock at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron a few days later watching the dolphins playing, she told me about her new job. She is the sailing instructor assigned to the Sarasota Sailing Squadron’s new program, Start to Sail Now, teaching sailing to adults. People arriving from the frozen north and Midwest see Sarasota’s beautiful bay with sailboats and motor boats cruising along, and they want to become part of the scene. During our conversation, two women from Nantucket wandered down the dock to ask us about the sailing squadron. Could they rent a boat? Did they have to become members?

Did they give sailing lessons? Did they have to join to take lessons? We directed them to life-long member and General Manager Craig Bridges to answer their questions. The Sarasota Sailing Squadron’s new sailing program is targeted to adults who have some sailing experience or are new to sailing. The Squadron gets two or three calls a week about the program from couples and singles who call to find out whether they have a sailing program and if they can rent boats. The Squadron has boats to rent out, but the liability would be too great without proof of enough sailing knowledge to manage the boats. Although the Squadron has an ongoing Youth Sailing Program, no programs have been offered recently to answer the needs of adult couples and singles who want to learn to sail. In November, Ray Markham, the education coordinator, started Learn to Sail Now to honor the Squadron’s mission statement. He made Julie the lead instructor, based on her availability. Lessons are scheduled through the office. She takes out one or two students at a time, and other instructors are on call as the program develops. The program uses the Squadrons’ 17-foot O’Day and a 20-foot Flying Scot. The sailboats have no motors and are under sail at all times, or, as Julie put it, “Coming in hot all the time.” Two days of sailing instruction for one or two trainees for four hours costs $200 per person.

Julie and a student at the dock, preparing the O’Day 17 for sail.

Julie and student sailing the O’Day 17.

She showed me the 10-page pamphlet they created for the 4-hour basic sailing course which has six basic components:

Other things that are covered: • Basic knot tying. • The rules of the road for sailboats. • Basic parts of the sail, boating safety, and how the direction of the wind affects the sailboat movement.

Learning the rigging. The first hour of the lesson is on dry land where Julie pointed to the outline of a sailboat on the first page, “Of course, the first thing to understand is about the sail and the rigging, and finding the wind so we don’t sit in irons.” Learning to dock. Getting the boat safely back to dock without crashing into other sailboats or the docks. Getting in and out of the dock. Identify the wind direction and depart from the leeward side of the dock if possible so the wind pushes the boat away from the dock. Tacking. Moving the bow through the wind or coming about turns the boat from a port to a starboard tack, or starboard to port. Jibe. Moving the stern of the boat through the wind. Boat safety at all times. When the weather turns nasty and students can’t take the boats out, they watch instructional videos, do land drills and learn how to tack and maneuver together.

The program differs from other sailing programs in that it focuses on adults who want to learn small-boat sailing or day sailing. It is for recreational sailing not racing. I asked Julie her hopes, fears and expectations for her students. Her hope is that her students will have a good time and fall in love with sailing and love it as much as she does. She fears that her students will become frustrated with the myriad of things a sailor must learn to safely manage a sailboat. She hopes to work with them so that won’t happen, and they won’t become impatient with themselves. Her expectations are that her students will accomplish the basic sailing and be able to helm or crew a small sailboat independently. Julie hopes to teach a future program with advanced sailing techniques. can get your news (on your own schedule) from several news sources, including your hometown newspapers. And through the miracle of the Internet you can actually make a phone call home should you have the need. Emailing someone on a not-so-immediate-basis now seems much more civilized than disturbing them on their cell phone. Hmmm, I could get use to Island Time. Why didn’t I hear about this before?

Island Time By John Galloway

L

ife begins late morning in the Abacos. There are very few “let’s-watch-the-sunrise-honey” boaters around here when I am up around six each morning. I pretty much have the whole sunrise to myself. Years of punching the clock has left these ol’ blue eyes on automatic wake-up before the sun gets up. Even the diehard fishermen who normally get up early casually leave the dock after nine each morning. The issue with all of this is what everybody did the night before, which in Marsh Harbour is visiting the several drinking holes, trying to decide which one has the best rum concoction. Each pub has it’s own name for its drink, such as The Bilge Burner, Goombay Smash, Rum Runner, Sex On The Beach (yes that is a drink here)—or the ever popular, Harbour Hammer. Add a secret blend of rums with a secret blend of sweet juices into each drink and if you have one too many, the next morning your bilge does indeed feel like it is burning. When life does get around to starting here you see a resort town of a few thousand Bahamians running an entertaining place where many tens of thousands of visitors come to get some Island Time away from the daily hustle of their lives. New arrivals are sometimes quick to walk around without their shoes and with shirt tails out as if to say, “I do not have to do what I have to do in my ordinary life back home.” Many men don’t shave, women skip the makeup, and suddenly, drinking at lunch seems perfectly normal. O f course, there is sometimes a price to pay for this newfound freedom, and you occasionally see a man with a badlooking stubble of a beard slightly hunched over not feeling well—along with a bloody toe from walking around on the wooden docks barefooted. Singles who are here alone—and some married people who are here alone— operate by “resort rules,” which states

that there are no rules. “I am out of town and nobody can see me here; I am practically invisible.” The boaters who come here are a great part of the Bahamian economy.

The boaters and their boats come in all shapes and sizes, from multimillion-dollar yachts to small sailing boats. The larger yachts usually tie up at one of the several marinas, while many of the smaller sailboats anchor out to save dock fees. It is a blend of the rich and the not-so-rich sharing the same restaurant or bar looking for the same island adventure or the next love adventure. It seems to work for everyone, and the Bahamians earn a fairly good living by providing what the boaters are looking for. The Bahamians I have met are very nice hard-working folks and seem to be okay with continually being on the entertainment committee. It all seems to balance out, and life here is good. Having closed my business—and retired—I am like many other boaters

who come here, in that I too am looking for some Island Time. Back in Tampa I would not even think of going out without my cell phone, and watching the various cable TV shows seemed like a good way to spend one’s time. Here, my cell phone does not even work, and I swear my life is not worse off because of it. My day is quieter without being instantly available to anyone who has my cell number, and I have absolutely no desire to call someone up just to see what they are doing. What a strange new world. Without cable TV, I am free, and that is the word: free—free from inconsequential news bulletins such as “Breaking News…the economy is sinking,” or a newsflash that some famous pop-tart was seen in a nightclub without her underwear on. Instead, with this new IslandTime freedom, really important people become…really important. There is time now to read about Randy Paush, the Carnegie-Mellon professor who recently died of pancreatic cancer and who has inspired so many with his college lecture on what it is like to die with dignity. Watching a Wall Street Journal online video of Professor Paush talking about his attitude on leaving his family when he dies produces a tear in your eye and gives an important lesson on courage to all who watch it. There is even time now to read the latest Randy Wayne White novel about our own wonderful Boca Grande/Sanibel area that is so important to all of us and so filled with natural beauty of its own. Of course, this Island-Time freedom from unimportant television news and cell calls also leaves more time for the occasional Bilge Burner at the Jib Room here at the Marsh Harbour Marina! But not to leave the modern world behind completely, there is wide-spread Wi-Fi available so you See ISLAND TIME continued on page 61
