SWIM Cambodia - Saving children from drowning

Every 4 hours, a child dies from drowning in Cambodia.*

My name is Conrad; as a volunteer, I lead the SWIM Cambodia charity from my home office in Shoreham-by-Sea. Hearing about a boy called Ravi, who died from drowning at 12 years old, led me to start drowning prevention in Cambodia with a vision for every child in Cambodia to live safely.

Since 2017, we have trained volunteers and partners to teach Drowning Dangers, Water Safety, and CPR education and skills to children, young people, parents, and carers. This year we hope to raise enough funds to employ a small team of teachers to teach Water Safety, CPR, and basic swimming skills. Two days ago, I heard in the Cambodian news that two girls died from drowning after they had gone looking for snails in the Mekong River. The girls were just 6 and 12 years old. It was thought the girls were finding snails to help their parents make money when they got into difficulty in a rapidly flowing part of the river. The education provided by SWIM Cambodia aims to prevent tragedies such as these, focusing on drowning dangers and how to keep yourself and others safe in-and-around the water.
