Simplicity of Design

These three images from my holiday in Fuerteventura last year are all displaying a simplicity of design.

The ‘trick’ is to identify and isolate a small rectangle of interest and to ensure to exclude the extraneous detail which may lurk alongside.

Each image has a focal point and has contrast of colour or tone, two with opposing geometric shapes and one with a geometric shape - the window - contrasted by the organic shape of the plant shadow.

Importantly, no people appear to break the simplicity. I usually like to include a human figure but in the case of these photographs, they would be surplus to requirements and would lend a totally different vibe to these spaces. All three were taken in relatively quiet back streets where many holiday makers would not think to roam and some photographers may not expect to capture images but these are the places which I always explore as they often offer little gems of real life rather than the glitzy beach bars and well documented seafronts which can be stuffed with activity but are often a little too busy to get satisfying images.

Of course, you may need to be patient, wait for people to move through the scene and occasionally even identify the potential of a scene but return turn visit to capture the shadow in the ideal osition may be necessary. When I first stumbled across this scene, the shadow partly fell across the window sill, I decided I wanted a space between these two elements of the image so I walked around for a while, returning when the light had changed slightly and the all at a different time of day when the light is coming from a preferential direction. For instance, the plant shadow will move with the sun so a re- important separation had happened.
