Where were you at in your life when you decided to join IJL?

grEg:

I’d been divorced for about two years, and it was a hectic time career wise. My company was in a transitional phase, and it demanded a lot of my time and effort, so I didn’t have time for much else.

JENNIE: I’d also been divorced about two years. Being a single mom and working full-time, it wasn’t a huge priority of mine to go out and do the legwork it took to meet someone; it felt like having another job, and I didn’t have time for that.

Favorite first date memories?

grEg: I was attracted to her right away. On the second date there was a real chemistry. Then it evolved very, very quickly.

JENNIE:

When Greg and I started talking, I discovered we had similar careers. I remember the conversation was so easy and comfortable. When I shared my date feedback with my IJL matchmaker, I let her know that Greg and I had made arrangements to attend a big award dinner at his country club.

The minute I walked in, I knew he was a consummate gentleman. I felt so cared for. He was attentive and made sure I was introduced to everyone.

How did IJL compare to your online dating experience?

grEg: Online dating isn’t easy, it’s work. I’ve got a full-time career; I didn’t need another job. With IJL they did everything for me. You’re busy with your career and everything else going on – IJL was just easier.

JENNIE: We love to be outside. I also love going to places I’ve never been before. He loves to drive and take me places – whether that’s going to the beach or going to the mountains or some random lake that’s hidden away.

How has your life changed since you met?

grEg: It is totally different than it was.

I would say that there was a point in time when I felt a little bit lost.

Everything has completely turned around. Every day I wake up, and I enjoy the day. I enjoy being around her, the kids, and our home. Life is just better.

The United States is fortunate to have the safest Air Traffic Control (ATC) system in the world, led by a dedicated and experienced Air Traffic Controller workforce. Despite its phenomenal safety record, however, the U.S. ATC system is not very Customer or environmentally friendly. That’s because the technology on which the system is built—groundbased radar—is outdated and inefficient.

And the U.S. government’s funding process and procurement rules prevent any proper long-term planning and investments in order to create a modern, satellite-based system.

But there’s hope. Congress is considering bipartisan legislation to reform how the ATC system is governed and funded. This legislation aims to create a new not-for-profit entity that would oversee the ATC operation and spearhead its modernization. This entity would be free from partisan gridlock, government budget shutdowns, and bureaucratic red tape. Importantly, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would continue to regulate safety, as it does today, and Controllers will remain on the job and continue to manage day-to-day flight activities.

It may be surprising to know that the United States is one of only a few remaining developed countries with a government agency that both operates its ATC system and regulates the aviation system from a safety perspective. In fact, nearly 60 countries have separated those two functions while maintaining or improving safety.

The U.S. ATC system now lags behind many other countries in terms of replacing outdated radar systems with GPS-based landing systems and other upgrades. The lack of significant progress with ATC modernization has placed a tremendous cost burden on our economy—the result of avoidable flight delays and cancellations, and inefficient flight patterns that needlessly waste jet fuel.

I am hopeful that, by the end of this year, Congress will work in a bipartisan fashion to enact common sense reforms that will create a more modern, Customer-friendly, and environmentally friendly ATC system, while keeping the FAA as the safety regulator.

Through this reform effort, I believe airline consumers will be the ultimate beneficiaries. A satellite-based system will result in less airspace congestion, improved flight times between cities, and fewer delays, cancellations, and carbon dioxide emissions. Puede resultar sorprendente saber que Estados Unidos es uno de los pocos países desarrollados restantes que tienen una agencia gubernamental que opera su sistema de ATC y regula

I arrived home to Tampa from Houston but my golf bag never made the flight. I had a tee time the next morning and a tournament that week, so getting my clubs back was crucial. The last flight was due in at 11 p.m., but the final pickup for delivery was at 10:30. When customer service agent Marilena Lugo realized she lives close to me, she offered to personally deliver my bag if it arrived that night.

She called around 2 a.m. and was at my doorstep with my clubs shortly thereafter. She was a godsend!

We were traveling through Port Columbus International Airport with our two small dogs when one of them, Clover, got her paw stuck in the escalator. We boarded our flight with a pathetically injured puppy, but the team of flight attendants—Pauline Alford, Kimberly Michael, Dave Rossa, and Tamra Vanhorn—showed incredible compassion.

Several months ago, my wife and I made arrangements to take our grandchildren to Disney. Weeks later, my wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, but the trip was not to be delayed. On a short flight, we ran into flight attendant Kimberlee Aug, who completely changed my wife’s outlook. As Kimberlee walked through the aisle, she commented that she liked my pink hat. I told her I liked her scarf— also pink. “Well I hope the reason you wear it becomes positive,” Kimberlee replied. I nodded at my wife, who looked up, teary-eyed, and said, “Not so much, but it is a pretty scarf.” Kimberlee walked away and returned moments later. She reached across me and grabbed my wife’s hand, placing the scarf in it. “You got this,” she said. Thank you for hiring great people. —Ric Dodd

I was returning to Lubbock after a conference in Dallas and was running late.

I hurriedly checked my bag and had reached security when I realized I’d left a knife in my pocket. The knife had been handed down from my grandfather to my father to me, and I was devastated by the thought of potentially losing this family heirloom. I raced back to the Southwest desk in hopes of catching my checked bag, but customer service agents Tojjinay Thompson and Becky Saunders informed me there was no way to retrieve it. After explaining the significance of the knife, Becky and Tojjinay offered to personally mail it to me. I was ecstatic. I offered to pay for postage, but Becky refused, saying, “It would be my pleasure.” Please acknowledge these two phenomenal employees. Rebecca and Tojjinay are

On a recent flight, I was in line for the bathroom with my 2-year-old son, Leo, when flight attendant Mark Murphy started talking to him. I informed Mark that Leo is deaf, so Mark started using sign language. Leo is learning ASL, so it was a very nice surprise to have Mark communicate with him in this way. Leo immediately started smiling, and this interaction made our flight that much more enjoyable. Thank you, Southwest, for employing people who care about making flights so personal.

I’m a college student and a member of the U.S. Army. I was on my way to basic training, alone and anxious about what was in store for me, when I met a flight attendant who changed my life.

Her name is Laurie Liss. Laurie said she could tell I was going to training; she had a son in the military. Laurie eased

my nerves by talking to me and offering words of encouragement. At the end of the flight she handed me something: a pillow she had made for military personnel. I have kept that pillow by my side ever since. If I could see her again I would tell her thank you. She set the tone for my training, and she went above and beyond to ensure I was all right. After my children’s hermit crabs were taken from them due to pet travel restrictions, we were all heartbroken.

Days later, we received a package labeled “open immediately.” My children quickly opened it and found four live hermit crabs inside! Capt. James Weaver had sent them to my children with a note stating, “I hope these little guys can replace the tears with smiles.”

Dear Reader, “Ever wonder why you seem to go faster when you drive at night?” my friend Stan, a physics major, said to me when we were in college.

I told him I hadn’t really thought about it.

“It’s because the car’s headlights suck the dark in.”

He explained that, while particles called photons make light, an opposite particle makes darkness. Dark particles rise with heat, allowing daylight, and then settle back down to earth at night. Your headlights don’t project light. They suck in the darkness.

I asked Stan why the speedometer seems the same at night.

“It’s a physics thing. You wouldn’t understand.”

It took me, a humanities major, a long time to realize that Stan had been telling me a tall (and dark) tale.

Headlights, I’m told by scientific authorities, do not suck in darkness. And we don’t go faster at night.

Still, I find the theory appealing. It mirrors the contrasting nature of the universe, of life itself. While this issue examines and celebrates light in all its glory (along with a new festival in Baltimore—Light City), I like to give props to the dark. Without darkness, would we know the light? New Mexico restricts the use of outdoor lighting, considering darkness a sort of resource; the stars there are worth flying to see. And for that matter, where would the Jedi be without the Dark Side?

These days, news media and political candidates tell us these are dark times, maybe darker than they really are. And like you, I’ve had my own dark moments. But I like to think of the triumphal lines of Genesis, describing darkness on the face of the deep and God saying, “Let there be light.”

It tells us that, while we celebrate the miracle of light, we should remember this: Darkness is a beginning.

I wanted to let you know how much I thoroughly enjoyed your article about crabs [“Crab Cakes with Kenny,” January 2016]. Growing up, my grandpa and I crabbed several times a week. I spent hours with him out on our dock, and I learned the same lessons (neutralizing the crab by holding its hind leg, telling the genders by the shape on their bellies, etc.). Ironically enough, I was flying back to Colorado from my grandfather’s funeral in New Jersey when I read the story. Before the service I’d purchased earrings, Eric Drew necklaces, and bracelets with crab charms on them HENDERSON, NEVADA for my female family members, and we all wore them / And remember the smell as tribute. It was so comforting reading your article of Old Bay on your hands?

I’ve lived in St. Mary’s County for 40-plus years, and I grew up in Baltimore. It was a joy to read of the happy memories the writer’s family made in the area. I was on an otherwise mundane business trip from New Orleans to Houston when I came across “Crab Cakes with Kenny” in Southwest: The Magazine. I just thought I’d take a minute to say thank you for the warm and well-written piece. What a delightful little article that made me smile and fully appreciate the depth and richness of family. Two little gems that particularly touched me: the writer’s dad saying, “Remember, there’s nothing like having a brother,” and the line “Kenny has always known something I never could: what it’s like to not fear consequences.” I had to laugh because my two grandsons’ personalities (and relationship) closely mirrors what he

It kind of hit home for me. I’m 49, and I have two younger brothers, each two years apart. We grew up in Falls Church, Virginia, but when we were younger my parents had a boat on the South River, near Selby Bay. The three of us used to take our nets and run up and down the dock checking each piling for crabs, and your account of the “doublers” and making sure we tossed back the females was exactly right. It brought back some great memories of my childhood on the bay.

The boundarybreaking ballerina on the power of perseverance

In middle school I was the captain of the drill team. My coach suggested I take a free ballet class at my Boys & Girls Club in San Pedro, California, and soon after I was awarded a full scholarship to attend the local ballet school. At 17, I moved to New York City to perform with American Ballet Theatre’s studio company, and a year later I was offered a spot. Starting at 13 is very late for a dancer. Once I got into ABT, things were difficult. People come from all over the world, and each of them was the best dancer at the school where they trained. The level of talent was overwhelming, but for me it was more than that. Out of 80 dancers, I was the only black woman. I questioned my role in the ballet world. At one point I considered quitting or joining a company with others who looked like me. Thankfully I had mentors come into my life who made me realize it’s OK to be different and it’s OK to be the first; it doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. It was a long process, but I’m here.

When our dogs died, my husband and I longed for a new pet to fill the void. / BY R.L. MAIZES

I

always thought it was wrong to return a dog. I looked down on friends who gave dogs back to breeders or shelters or re-homed them on Craigslist when the initial excitement wore off and the work of caring for the pet began. You don’t treat an animal like a defective toaster toaster, I thought, swapping it for a new one.

My dogs are my kids. They got me through a divorce, one sleeping in my bed, her head on my ex-husband’s pillow, the other protecting me, growling when strangers came to the door. Their sloppy kisses eased my loneliness.

My new husband, Steve, and I spent our early dates hiking with our dogs. I knew he was the one when he kneeled on a trail on a warm October day and filled his cupped hand with water not 48 southwest march 2016

only for his dog but also for mine.

Eventually our three dogs died, leaving us with their half-full medicine bottles, gnawed bones, and empty pet beds. Without a dog to walk, we rarely saw the seasons or our neighbors.

Their love had been abundant and uncomplicated. Its absence left a chasm.

When it came time to look for a new dog, Steve and I ran into trouble. The last time I adopted a dog it took me a day to find one. The last time Steve adopted a dog, he spent a year looking. On numerous trips to the shelter, we couldn’t agree. I liked a boxer named Shalom. We were Jewish; it was kismet! But Steve didn’t bond with him. He refused to meet any toy dogs and preferred a female.

I couldn’t hide my anger and disappointment. I resented Steve for being too particular. He accused me of not being particular enough.

While we were looking, we adopted a cat, Arie. Left anonymously in the shelter’s “night box,” she was 9 pounds of white silk, with pink ears. She kneaded our chests when we held her, hoping for milk. We fell hard—but still longed for a dog.

I monitored the animals on the shelter’s website obsessively, keeping the site open and refreshing it every five minutes, looking for a dog that met Steve’s criteria. As soon as Cowgirl’s picture went up, I called and paid $20 by credit card to put her on hold. We rushed down to see her.

Seventeen pounds and white, with paws the size of walnuts, she was the kind of dog who would get adopted fast. She hid behind a shelter volunteer, but we weren’t bothered by her shyness. If anything, it reassured us she wouldn’t pose a threat to Arie.

I watched Steve as closely as I did the dog. He sat down on the grass next to Cowgirl and rubbed her belly. I could tell he liked her.

At our request, the shelter did a “cat test,” observing how Cowgirl reacted when she encountered a feline in a carrier. “She passed,” they said when Cowgirl ignored it.

The shelter said she was a cattle dog mix. Molly, one of the dogs we had lost, had been a cattle dog mix, sweet and smart and a great friend to Flora, our cat that had also died. Cowgirl didn’t look anything like Molly or a cattle dog.

She looked like a Jack Russell terrier, with tan markings on her face and black “mascara” around her eyes. A Jack Russell would be a terrible dog to bring home to a cat because they are bred to chase foxes and other burrowing animals.

A voice inside me insisted she wasn’t the one, but I refused to

listen. I was tired of looking for a dog and the tension it created between Steve and me. I was desperate to re-experience the bond I had with our other dogs. We filled out the adoption paperwork. It was a Tuesday.

We hung a tag engraved with her name and our phone number from her collar, and stocked up on Costco-size bags of treats. We were in for the long haul.

The minute we entered our

house, the shy girl from the shelter disappeared. We had been advised to keep Cowgirl on a long tether or behind an oversize baby gate at first, to give the animals time to adjust and to keep Arie safe while they did. Each time she saw Arie, Cowgirl hurled herself at the gate, barking and whining.

She strained at the end of the tether, testing its limits.

We learned what shelter professionals already know: The cat

test doesn’t work. The cat selected by the shelter is unafraid of dogs and is restrained in a carrier. Bringing a dog home to an uncaged cat is a different matter.

Arie was so frightened by Cowgirl’s lunges—and shocked to find herself prey in her own home, I imagine—she stopped using her litter box, pooping instead on the basement carpet.

After two days, we called the shelter director for advice. “You might not be the right home for Cowgirl,” she said. I was taken aback. We were calling for help getting Cowgirl settled. We hadn’t considered bringing her back. We weren’t the kind of people who returned a dog. If I was sure of anything, it was that. Besides, I had broadcast pictures of her on Facebook and beyond. We had spooned at night—briefly, when she wasn’t curled in a tight ball on the opposite corner of the bed, as far from me as she could get.

The director transferred us to a behaviorist who advised bringing both animals into the same room several times a day under close supervision and giving them treats. Cowgirl was to be rewarded only when she was calm. “They could become the best of friends,” she assured us.

Steve and I followed the behaviorist’s advice, but we didn’t see a change. A trainer we trusted gave us a grim assessment. “It could take six months to teach Cowgirl not to go after Arie. Even then, you’ll want to muzzle the dog just to be safe. You may never trust her completely.”

After five days, we were worn down. Even I had to admit we weren’t creating the loving family I had envisioned. Confined, Cowgirl was miserable, barely moving except when Arie came into view.

Arie spent most of the time in the basement, out of Cowgirl’s reach.

That Saturday, we returned Cowgirl. It turned out we were the kind of people who brought back

a dog. Cowgirl bounded through the shelter doors, and a volunteer took her to a kennel. She never once looked back at us.

Standing at the desk where people surrender animals, I hoped no one recognized me. I couldn’t wait to return to the anonymity of my car. I wept, before making the decision and after. I worried I had failed Cowgirl. I mourned the bond I had hoped for with her.

Cowgirl’s tag still lies in my dresser drawer, alongside the tags of the animals we had lost.

Months went by before we visited the shelter again. I no longer believed a new dog would fill the void left by the old ones. I had learned what it meant to bring home the wrong dog.

Eventually we adopted Rosie, who had lived on a South Dakota reservation. A 1-year-old mutt, she was 57 pounds with reddish-tan fur, a charcoal muzzle, and ears like a bat’s wings. Both Steve and I were drawn to her.

It’s taken months to housetrain her. Still a puppy, she chews everything, including the midcentury modern love seat in my home office and a cable remote.

(Maybe she doesn’t like our choice of shows.) Arie munches Rosie’s giant ears and bats her large nose.

When Arie commandeers Rosie’s bed, Rosie lies alongside her on the floor.

For a time I thought doing right by Arie meant doing wrong

by Cowgirl, but ultimately I realized we did right by Cowgirl, too, giving her the chance to find a home that was a better fit, one in which she needn’t be restrained.

The decision was obvious once I focused on Cowgirl’s needs instead of my own.

Within 48 hours of returning her, she was adopted by a family without a cat.

HE INTERNATIONAL Space Station orbits the Earth at more than 17,000 mph, lapping the planet every 90 minutes. That means there are 16 sunrises and 16 sunsets each day. It never got old.

Imagine orbital night: You are looking out the bay window, down at the dark world. When you’re over an unpopulated area like the ocean, which is most of the planet, you’re looking at nothingness—no lights, no stars, a hole in space.

Suddenly you see a clear silver line, Earth’s thin atmosphere, tracing the horizon. It quickly changes hue, from silver to blue to coral orange to yellow to a fiery orange to red. At the same time, you glimpse the station’s giant solar arrays glowing like the filaments in your toaster, hearkening the sun’s rise. And then that blinding gold ball emerges, painting the black planet in washes of white, green, and the bluest blue you’ve ever seen. By the time your heart catches up, you wish there was a way to freeze time.

Ninety minutes later the whole thing reverses—the terminator line creeps back, swallowing the Earth and all its color, the bright orb shrinking to a dot and then disappearing, leaving you, once again, dangling above the abyss.

Now when I see a sunset or sunrise down here on Earth, I feel intense longing. But I also take comfort in knowing there is always something more beautiful beyond what we can see. It gives me hope.

Seeing the Light For guitar heroine Kaki King, restorative eye surgery inspired a new kind of performance.

N THE BEGINNING, there is nothing—a dark, empty stage and the deep rumble of synthesizers. Tiny, glittering orbs begin to dance across the backdrop, a swirl of cosmic dust. In the foreground, lights shoot across the body of a lonely, suspended acoustic guitar, itself a small screen, which suddenly awakens in a white glow as some invisible hand strums a single chord.

Instead of being played, it’s as if the guitar is beckoning to the player, who now comes onstage clad head-totoe in white, sporting a shock of platinum hair and sunglasses. She sits on a velvet King’s stool behind the guitar stand and lays her spellbinding hands on the strings, uniting with the concert on instrument. “It’s the creation story,” guithe TED stage last May tarist Kaki King explains later. “But who’s has been in control? The show, The Neck Is A Bridge to the Body, is King’s brainchild, but it’s also a collaboration with five visual artists and the Glowing Pictures production company—not to mention the fans who chipped in more than $43,000 on Kickstarter to help bring the project to fruition. “We learn that [the guitar] is a shape-shifter, it has traveled all over the world, it has a background with friends and family, and it even has a skeleton and a

“I didn’t look at anything until I was 28,” she says. “You don’t see with your eyes; you see with your brain. But now my brain was going to change with these new eyes.”

A vibrant world of shapes and colors revealed itself, and she looked to improve stage-lighting presentation at her shows. Eventually she stumbled onto projection mapping and realized that images could be cast onto not only the backdrop but also the guitar itself. The further she delved into the vortex, the more intertwined the music and video—sound and light—became. She discovered motion detectors and pressure sensors that she could use to alter the visuals in real time during the presentation.

And she soon began to realize that her music was being influenced by what the artists put on screen. “It’s new for

nervous system,” King wrote on her Kickstarter page. “Music creates the musician, and the guitar creates the guitarist.”

The performance continues, guitar and guitarist now awash in white flashes as King scratches and slaps the wooden body in a percussive song called “Thoughts Are Born.” The blasts of light intensify with the severity of the artist’s drumming, which accelerates to a gallop. The first color appears in the next track with the first actual note King plays, and from there the show grows in complexity— visuals and music journey from abstract shapes to actual cityscapes. “The guitar is talking,” she later says. “It’s narrating its own life story.”

King was 4 years old when her father, a lawyer who loved music, put a small guitar in her hands. Lessons followed, but she was no prodigy. It was also at an early age that her parents learned she had trouble with her eyesight. She was fitted with glasses at age 7, and the heavy plastic lenses only thickened with age.

Growing up almost legally blind, she never developed an interest in the visual world. Instead, she escaped into her music, learning by ear. After an adolescent dalliance with the drums, she returned to the six-string as a solo performer in college at NYU, playing at open mics and in subway stations and finally at a few smaller venues. Her percussive style, tapping and smacking the strings and body, along with her use of unique tunings, set her apart.

She signed her first record deal in 2002 at age 23. Five years later, when Rolling Stone released its “New Guitar Gods” list, she was the only female and the youngest picked.

Soon thereafter, tired of having to call for housekeeping to help find her lost glasses on hotel floors, King had corrective eye surgery. It was as if she had been reborn.

Virtual Reality A holographic pop star is forged from the collective imagination of fans worldwide.

HATSUNE MIKU, the bright-eyed Japanese diva with turquoise pigtails who dances onstage before thousands of rabid, glow stick– wielding fans, is nothing more than a 3-D image cast onto a transparent screen by a series of high-powered projectors.

But she is also a figurative projection.

Miku was born in 2007 as a data bank of female vocal samples that could be programmed to sing homespun lyrics as part of Vocaloid, a personal recording software program not unlike GarageBand.

Her only physical manifestation was the anime-style avatar on the box. But once thousands of fans started creating and sharing music in her “voice” online, the demand for merchandising exploded into art, figurines, and, in 2009, a holographic “live” show. Her creators at Sapporo, Japan–based Crypton Future Media gave her a limited persona: 16 years old, 158 centimeters tall, 42 kilograms in weight.

The rest was left to the fans. “She is everybody,” says Kanae Muraki, Crypton’s general manager of U.S./E.U. development. “That’s the whole idea behind the movement.”

After the creation portion of the performance, King and her instrument lead the audience through a wild, bright, and sometimes dissonant ride through the guitar’s evolution. The finale is a song of peaceful reflection entitled “We Did Not Make The Instrument, The Instrument Made Us.” The sound of synthesizers hovers beneath her gentle fingerpicking as pastel purples, blues, and greens scribble, wash, and explode across the backdrop. The guitar seems to lose its shape, morphing and melting. An intense crescendo plummets into a trickle of notes. Then a final strum rings out as the screens go dark.

Thus far, the movement has produced 2.5 million Facebook fans, 170,000 YouTube videos, and a catalog of more than 100,000 fanwritten songs from which Miku’s crew picks the set lists for her shows. Miku has opened for Lady Gaga, collaborated with Pharrell, and performed on the Late Show with David Letterman. This April, she will embark on another U.S. tour—and she’s still just 16.

But is she real?

“We’re at concerts, backstage, but Miku’s dressing room is empty,” says Riki Tsuji, a Crypton assistant director. “A concert is not 100 percent about what’s happening on stage; it’s about the energy of the people around you. But having that projection brings the whole thing closer to a typical concert experience. Without it, she’s just a disembodied voice.”

Dr. Hurricane Powers the Future The former weapons designer may save us all.

MAR HURRICANE spent 15 years of his life designing warheads.

As a physicist studying nuclear fusion, that was only natural. Fusion research essentially began as a byproduct of the Manhattan Project during World War II. But in 2012 the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, located

in the Bay Area, recruited Hurricane for a different kind of project: Using lasers to achieve controlled fusion, a nuclear reaction that, if contained, could generate enough clean, renewable energy to power the globe. “It was exciting,” says Hurricane. “I wanted to be part of something that was potentially beneficial for humanity.”

Physicists have been trying to

harness fusion (a high-speed collision of two atomic nuclei that produces power) as a civil salve since its initial role as a potentially world-killing Cold War weapon.

Lasers entered the sustainablefusion picture in the 1970s. But progress was a slog, even after construction of the National Ignition Facility was completed in 2009.

This behemoth, $3.5 billion laser consists of 192 beams of light that stretch more than 4,900 feet and produce 500 trillion watts.

Hurricane’s crew of researchers brought all of that to bear on a pencil eraser–size cylinder containing a 2-millimeter dot of hydrogen fuel. The problem,

The lab’s solution was to reduce the laser’s force of compression, stabilizing the fuel so that the ball could be squeezed evenly. Finally, they managed to turn two hydrogen atoms into a single helium atom, a reaction that produced more energy than was put in.

A significant breakthrough, to be sure, but Hurricane says we are still decades away from seeing fusion power on the grid. After all, it has always been easier to destroy than to create.

HE COUNTDOWN is on, and tension is mounting in Building 29 of the Goddard Space Flight Center. On the cavernous clean-room floor where technicians are assembling the machine’s 21-foot, gold-coated mirror, in the simulators where the engineers test its spectrograph at sub-imaginable temperatures, and in the upstairs offices where scientists and project managers sweat over the data, there is a heightened sense of urgency as launch date approaches: T-minus two years and 10 months.

That may sound like an eternity to most people, but to the 1,000-member crew behind the James Webb Space Telescope, it’s crunch time. “It’s not a marathon anymore,” says Paul Geithner, mission system engineer and deputy project manager for “Webb.” “It’s an endless series of 100-meter dashes.”

N THE EVENING of June 11, 1816, the artist Rembrandt Peale gathered a group of socialites and businessmen at his small museum in Baltimore. He wowed them by illuminating the room not with candles, but by gaslamp. Soon, the city became the first in America to use gaslamps to light its streets. Now, two centuries later, Baltimore is back at the forefront of light innovation. Light City, a festival running March 28 to April 3 (lightcity.org), includes four innovation conferences and dozens of electrifying exhibits, installations, and performances. On the following pages, discover just a few.

This floating installation by England-based duo Aether & Hemera (named for the Greek gods of light and day, respectively) uses water as a canvas to explore themes of light and social interaction.

Using their cell phones, viewers can manipulate the patterns and colors of the 300 illuminated paper boats bobbing in the harbor. These interactive features were crafted to cultivate a sense of playfulness, but also to prompt questions about how art and technology can bring people together.

“By asking the audience to interact, our work connects people with their environment and behaves as a platform for creating a social experience,” says artist Gloria Ronchi, one-half of the duo. “We believe that, in the near future, our cities will be filled with art and technology that can offer open access to information, inspire creativity, and cultivate a sense of identity and community.”

Dozens of renowned music acts pack the festival lineup, but a local amateur ensemble will fittingly lead the opening night procession. The 901 Arts drumline, comprised of students from the Better Waverly neighborhood, will be outfitted with electric packs that trigger flashes of light in their headgear at the sound of each beat. 901 Arts empowers young people aspiring to learn a new art form, and the parade offers more than an opportunity to show off their snare skills, says director Sarah Tooley.

“Selecting our drumline to lead the parade sends a message that our city values the cultural contributions of our city's AfricanAmerican youth.”

Accidental 4/The Organizer

David Fakunle didn't have to be there that night. He could’ve been off studying in his drug dependence epidemiology program at Johns Hopkins University. But there he was, at a planning meeting for Light City, and something wasn’t sitting right.

“During a Q&A period, I stood up and said, ‘This is nice and all, but if this is going to be just another festival that comes into Baltimore and uses up its resources and is more attune to its outside visitors than the actual citizens of the city, then I don’t want it,” he says.

Festival organizers took his words to heart—“They called my bluff,” the Baltimore native says with a laugh—and asked him to join the executive board. Now, he’s focused on making sure his hometown is not only represented, but showcased.

“People who are well-known in their neighborhoods and in Baltimore now have this national, if not international, spotlight where they can showcase their talents and abilities,” he says. “And who knows what can come from it. I hope those people’s lives are changed. I hope people hit it big because they were at Light City. That would make me the proudest of all.”

Known for his immersive live performances, the Baltimore resident and electronic artist will bring his eclectic talents to the festival.

Here, he ponders the shifting possibilities that light brings to the stage: “Strobe lights can quickly take something mundane and make it very jarring. Or, you can use the lights to take something that is already jarring and move it into a different direction. As soon as you add haze or smoke and mist, all of a sudden there is depth—these moving cones and patterns all throughout the air.

Imagine having a time machine for the sole reason of taking a picture of a crazy light show and then showing that to someone in the 1800s. I think they’d burn you at the stake.”

8/Dark Was the Night

It all started with an old light. On a trip to visit his parents in Baltimore, Justin Randolph Thompson spotted a church chandelier at Housewerks Salvage, a shop that reclaims interesting architectural pieces. “It was sitting on this table all taken apart and it caught my eye,” says the Florence, Italy–based artist.

Today that chandelier sits atop one of Light City’s most complex installations. It goes something like this: Six bicycles rest at the base of a tower, attached to a motor. When participants pedal, the chandelier lights up, along with lightbox picket signs worn by other participants and a marquee adorned with images from the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History & Culture.

And did we mention the choir? “I like the fact that there are so many different ways of interpreting the notion of illumination,” Randolph says.

All that’s at stake is public scrutiny, professional reputation, an $8 billion taxpayer price tag, and, possibly, the answer to the central question of human existence.

Geithner is at the tail end of the generation of born-again dreamers who were baptized by Armstrong’s first steps on the moon. The fuzzy images coming through the little black-and-white TV in his parents’ bedroom called Geithner to the stars. He got his first telescope for Christmas when he was 7, and he’s owned one ever since. “I love looking up at the night sky,” he says, his youthful grin framed by ears that protrude like solar arrays. “I’d follow the planets. I’d look up at the moon and think, Maybe I’ll get to walk there someday.” He joined the Air Force after getting an engineering degree at Virginia Tech, but allergies kept him out of the cockpit. Instead he started working on satellite technology and eventually found his way to NASA, which hired him to help fix the Hubble Space Telescope.

Today, Hubble is revered as our gateway to the cosmos, beaming back dazzling images of black holes, supernovas, and stars forming in dense nebulae, as well as enabling discoveries such as a more precise rate of the universe’s expansion. But Hubble was originally synonymous with snafu—scientists discovered a problem with its optics a few weeks after its 1990 launch. Geithner was part of a crew brought in to troubleshoot and help orchestrate a spacewalk to repair a microscopic imperfection in Hubble’s main mirror.

It was just after the more routine second servicing mission to Hubble was completed that NASA approached Geithner about another project—a new space telescope that, in terms of size, scale, technology, and mission, would make Hubble seem like a View-Master.

They’ve just installed piece 16, but the going is slow. As NASA learned with Hubble, the smallest error—a smudge, bump, or speck of dust— could prove disastrous.

” NASA committee started dreaming up its next big project. By 1995, even as the newly repaired Hubble was beaming back startling starscapes, the telescope was showing its creators the limits of what it could do.

“We thought we’d be able to see the first luminous objects, but they were too far away, too far back in time,” says John Mather, Webb’s project scientist, whose early work to confirm the Big Bang Theory earned him the 2006 Nobel Prize in physics.

Because the universe is expanding, Mather explains, the light emitted by those original stars is now too stretched out and too red to be visible to Hubble’s ultraviolet-detecting equipment. So in 1996 NASA decided to build a new space telescope with infrared capabilities.

Webb's sunshield alone is the size of a tennis court—larger in diameter than any rocket—so it will have to be folded into a capsule for launch and then opened like a flower when in space, a blooming that will take 14 days. While Hubble’s orbit is a mere 350 miles from Earth’s surface, Webb will squat nearly 1 million miles away,

more than four times the distance between Earth and the moon—a journey that will take roughly 30 days, too far out of reach for any modern-day service and repair mission.

And yet, from that vantage, with its massive sunshield to keep the instruments cool, Webb will be able to detect wavelengths of up to 28 micrometers (Hubble can only see 2.5 micrometers), light that has been traveling

Light takes time to travel, and Webb will be trying to capture the light that left the oldest stars and galaxies more than 13 billion years ago.

Satellites are able to detect the heat signature of the Big Bang about 380,000 years after it happened. But the universe at that time was dark—no stars had yet formed.

Currently, Hubble can see far enough back to observe what NASA terms “toddler galaxies.” Webb, on the other hand, is designed to gaze upon the infants—new galaxies that are still moving away as the universe expands, stretching their light waves from the visible and ultraviolet into the red end of the spectrum.

They want to observe the first stars—the first light—which they theorize were 1,000 times bigger than the sun and much brighter before the celestial bodies exploded into supernovas massive enough to still be detectable. From those violent explosions, Webb might be able to identify how galaxies formed and evolved—how they are shaped, how elements are created and distributed, how stars

trying to anticipate anything that could go wrong. They’re currently wrapping up the second cryogenic tests, in which Webb’s instrument box (containing the cameras and spectrometers) was placed in a 60-foot kettle-like vacuum chamber and cooled to minus 440 degrees Fahrenheit, warmed back up, taken apart, reassembled, and put back into the deep freeze.

“Things shrink when they get cold,” Geithner says. “We want to make sure it doesn’t break itself as it cools down.”

Once everything checks out, the instrument box will be rereassembled, attached to the mirror, and trucked to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston, where there is a cryo-testing facility big enough to house the entire telescope. Then it’s on to Redondo Beach, California, where the telescope will join the sunshield and spacecraft before being loaded onto a barge (Webb’s total weight, more than 7 tons, would be too much for several bridges en route) and shipped through the Panama Canal to French Guiana for its launch 1 million miles into space. Anything goes wrong on that journey and it’s $8.8 billion sucked out of the air lock.

“Nobody dwells on the fear,” Geithner says. “You do everything you can to ensure success.

Test the heck out of stuff. But it’s not risk-free. To have worked on something for most of your career and to think there’s a small chance that the rocket will blow up, something bad happens in deployment, or it doesn’t work— that’s always just below the surface. It comes with the territory.”

The risk may frame Geithner’s team’s engineering, but it’s the potential reward that drives them forward. Webb’s mission is multifaceted. In addition to learning more about the oldest objects in the universe, NASA also wants to get a second and deeper look at the objects Hubble has spotted,

such as nebulae and other planets outside our solar system. But as Geithner sits in his Goddard office, he occasionally looks to the book shelf by the window, where a glass case contains the newest model in his collection: a mockup of Webb, sunshield unfurled and gleaming in the morning sun. Watching Geithner excitedly show off his new toy, it isn’t hard to imagine the wonderment of a child staring up at the stars.

“Hubble’s greatest accomplishments were answers to questions we didn’t even know we had,” he says. “My greatest hope is that Webb will make discoveries that we can’t even imagine right now.”

In 1912, the world’s first combination candy bar—a disk-shaped mound of caramel, roasted peanuts, and marshmallow nougat inside a milk chocolate shell—was born in a copper kettle at Standard Candy Company in Nashville. “We’re known for our slow-roasted prime rib, Sunday brunch, fresh-baked pies, and ‘unsliceably’ soft rolls. We’re also very excited about our new Southerninspired menu, which features a Nashville staple: hot chicken.”

Household names are made just about everywhere you turn in Music City. Including at Nashville International Airport, where live music has been a part of the travel experience for more than 25 years.

“We want passengers to get a small taste of our city, even if they never get to leave the terminal,” says Shannon Sumrall, a spokesperson for BNA. Although mainly a platform for up-andcoming local talent, the airport has played host to noteworthy groups like Big and Rich and The Oak Ridge Boys.

There’s no set schedule, but Sumrall says you can expect live music every day of the week.

Music to Our Ears

Southwest celebrates 30 years in Music City.

This month marks a very special milestone for Southwest Airlines: 30 years of service in Nashville, Tennessee, aka Music City. With more than 85 daily departures to 33 destinations, Nashville has become one of Southwest’s most popular cities, bringing music makers and music lovers from across the country to the songwriting capital of the world.

Music plays a major role in how we celebrate with our Employees and Customers, so we’ve hosted many talented musicians onboard our planes, where they perform acoustic sets at 35,000 feet in a concert series called Live at 35.

We recently joined two of our Nashville partners—the Nashville Songwriters Association International (NSAI) and the famed Bluebird Cafe—for a unique Live at 35 experience. At the intimate, 90-seat Bluebird Cafe, songwriters play original music and share the stories behind their

hit songs. In September, Southwest was proud to host the first “Bluebird in the Sky,” surprising Customers with onboard performances by Striking Matches, Kim Richey, and Charles Esten.

In Nashville, live music can be heard 365 days a year in more than 130 venues.

The crown jewel is the world-famous Grand Ole Opry House, which plays host to America’s longest-running radio show, the Grand Ole Opry Opry. Southwest has been a proud partner of the Opry for the past 25 years, and together we’ve taken the iconic WSM Grand Ole Opry microphone stand on a nonstop flight from Nashville to New York City. There, country artists performed live at the Southwest Porch at Bryant Park.

We are grateful for the love Nashville has shown us over the past 30 years, and we look forward to many more. When it comes to connecting People to what is important in their lives, especially music, Southwest hits just the right note.

The Community is the Expert

Project for Public Spaces looks to locals to help achieve its mission.

Placemaking, the intentional rejuvenation of public spaces, is based on one fundamental principle: The people who use a space know what issues to consider in order to turn it into a flourishing part of the community. By seeking input from locals early in the process, we facilitate a sense of ownership within the community. This investment is key to affecting positive, lasting change in a public space.

Heart of the Community, Southwest’s grant-making program that supports placemaking, allows the national nonprofit Project for Public Spaces to connect with local organizations and begin the journey of transforming a community by asking one simple question: What do you want to do here? The answers have resulted in projects as unique as each city.

In Providence, Rhode Island, a series of workshops led to the creation of the Imagination Center, a kids’ play area within historic Burnside Park that is

filled with colorful picnic tables, book carts, beanbag seating, and a playground. The Imagination Center brings families together for storytelling, arts and crafts, and performances.

During a similar workshop in Portland, Maine, senior citizens living next to Congress Square Park interviewed visitors to learn how the space was used. Personal investment has inspired this community to serve as ongoing stewards of the park.

And recently, the arts organization Creative Alliance Milwaukee led public engagement meetings to repurpose a barren downtown parking lot.

They used the feedback to transform the lot into The Spot 4MKE, a fun and flexible space that celebrates the artistic and cultural character of their city.

As we continue to support placemaking in the cities Southwest serves, we will always return to our one basic principle: The community is the expert.

• Customers traveling from some countries go through the customs process before returning to the United States.

• If you have checked baggage, proceed to the Southwest recheck desk or ticket counter to check your bags for the final portion of your trip.

• Customers traveling internationally into the United States with a connecting flight may carry liquids in carryon baggage, provided they were purchased in duty-free shops and placed in secure, tamper-evident bags.

• Proceed to your departure gate. If you do not have a boarding pass for your connecting flight, you must obtain one at the ticket counter or at kiosks near the Southwest recheck desk before proceeding to your gate.

Sailing was a hobby of mine for 40-some years. I had a 30-foot sloop back in the ’70s and ’80s, and when the wind was at about 15 knots that was perfection, sheer. My waters were from Nova Scotia to the Caribbean.

You don’t really have to think out there; that’s part of the joy of it. You just function. If you’ve got good books, you read a lot. I think every sailor has an interesting library. That’s what they say about sailing: hours of boredom punctuated by moments of sheer terror.
