Health and wellbeing benefits of walking on the South West Coast Path valued at over £69 million per year.
Research commissioned by the South West Coast Path Association (SWCPA), the charity that looks after Britain’s longest National Trail, has revealed economic health and wellbeing benefits totalling over £69 million per year for people walking on the South West Coast Path (SWCP).
The report, which was undertaken in partnership with the University of Exeter, utilises the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) approved assessment tools to calculate the physical health benefits based on the number of premature deaths avoided. From the total, £5.5 million can be directly attributed to people walking on the 630-mile National Trail who wouldn’t be walking elsewhere. This can be compared with similar valuations carried out for the 870-mile Wales Coast Path (£3.5 million) and the England Coast Path (£19 million), which will be 2,795 miles in length when completed.
