BIZFEST 2015 BRINGING THE BEST BUSINESS ADVICE TO THE SOUTHWEST

PUBLISHER'S NOTE HOLD ON TIGHT, SOUTHWEST VICTORIA - AUGUST IS GOING TO BE HUGE! It's the Victorian Government's Small Business Festival and the hardest part is selecting which events to attend. This year's program (see it at www.business.warrnambool.vic.gov.au) is a ripper! And it's fabulous to see events happening right across the region, in Portland, Port Fairy, Warrnambool, Terang and Camperdown. I love that we have a whole month dedicated to learning, networking and focusing on all things small business. Not only does it provide a brilliant excuse to spend time working "on" your business, rather just "in" it, but it's also a whole month of professional development and networking opportunities for us all, whether we're in business or working in somebody else's. One of my favourite quotes is this: "You are responsible for the energy you bring." So I can't wait to immerse myself in the energy of other business and professional people who are just as excited as me and who "get" what it takes to be entrepreneurial and ambitious. After all, it does take a particular kind of person to survive in small business. I am now in my ninth year of business and my observation is

that it takes a certain tenacity - some would say "stubbornness" - just to keep going every day. I have written a recent blog about this very issue. You can read this on our website, www.swbiz.com.au. A YEAR OF CHANGE It's certainly been a year of change for us at SouthwestBIZ magazine. One of the big changes we have made is to move to a bi-monthly publication schedule. This means bigger, "meatier" editions with a longer shelf life. In between publication dates, we'll be ramping up our online activity to keep you connected and informed. We'd love you to be a part of our community, so do please like our SouthwestBIZ Facebook page! We'll be bringing you more stories about the people behind the businesses that power our regional economy, along with more tips, information and advice from the experts. To our advertising "family", I would like to say a very heartfelt thankyou for being a part of our journey thus far. Exciting times ahead for us all!

TOWNS SUCH AS KILLARNEY, TOWER HILL, CROSSLEY, ALLANSFORD, PURNIM, PANMURE, HAWKESDALE, WOOLSTHORPE AND MAILORS FLAT TO NAME A FEW, CAN CONNECT TO THE NBN RIGHT NOW.

NBN

FAQs I’m renting, what do I have to do to get connected to the NBN? It will be up to the property owner to decide if your residence will be installed with an NBN service. We recommend you speak to your property manager or landlord to discuss the connection. Will my landline phone still work when I switch to the NBN? You can decide to keep your landline using the existing copper connection. As an alternative, you can choose to use an Aussie Broadband VoIP service to make and receive phone calls. How much will the installation cost? Currently at least one installation option will be free for you. If you would like your installation done in a particular way please discuss this with the installer as there may be charges associated with this. Do I need to be there for the installation? You, or an authorised representative, needs to be there for the whole appointment, to let the installer in, and agree where the equipment should be located. What sort of computer do I need? Services provided by Aussie Broadband are compatible with most Windows, UNIX and Mac OSX based systems. Some of the operating systems we support range from Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8 and Mac OSX just to name a few. It is also a requirement that your computer has a network card; most systems these days will have one preinstalled. 4

Aussie Broadband set to help with your NBN needs IF YOU’RE IN A REGIONAL OR RURAL AREA AND WANT FASTER INTERNET SPEEDS, YOU’RE IN LUCK – AUSSIE BROADBAND WANTS TO GET YOU CONNECTED.

A

ussie Broadband is an official NBN retail service provider of the National Broadband Network (NBN), which is being rolled out across the southwest with smaller towns and localities already able to connect. Aussie Broadband National Sales Manager Aaron O’Keeffe says towns such as Killarney, Tower Hill, Crossley, Allansford, Purnim, Panmure, Hawkesdale, Woolsthorpe and Mailors Flat to name a few, can connect to the NBN right now. “The NBN is being rolled out across the more rural areas using fixed wireless technology, which means these smaller towns have access to the new technology before larger towns and cities like Warrnambool and Hamilton,” Aaron says. “The NBN offers fantastic internet speeds – 25mb per second downloads and 5mb per second uploads, which is a vast improvement on what was previously available.”

Aaron says rural and regional areas are getting the NBN before larger towns and cities because of the technology being used to connect. “It will take longer for larger towns to be connected due to the use of the copper network and the extra work that is required. NBN needs to install nodes that will essentially bring telephone exchanges closer to the customer, which is how the higher speeds are achieved,” Aaron says. “It’s a lot simpler to connect customers in rural areas as they are using the fixed wireless technology in those areas.” For more information about the NBN and getting connected, phone Aussie Broadband on 1300 880 905 or visit www.aussiebroadband.com.au.

The purple shaded areas is where the NBN fixed wireless is available now and the light brown shaded areas is where works are currently in progress to deliver NBN fixed wireless services.

*Coverage map is used for indicative purposes only and may not be accurate. To find out if the NBN is available at your premises please contact Aussie Broadband for a service qualification.

Committee for Portland Executive Officer Anita Rank says Portland Women in Business was formed two years ago to give women in the greater Portland region professional development opportunities and a forum in which to seek and provide advice, network and develop their businesses. “A few local businesswomen saw the need for a formal network in which to support women in business, industry and leadership in the region and so Portland WIB was born,” Anita says. “We have gone from strength-to-strength and now have over 20 members from a really diverse range of business and industry. We have regular meetings, send out an e-newsletter, attend events together and run professional development.” Some of the local business women who are WIB members include Ab Fab’s Pauline Stanley, Money Tree

PORTLAND WOMEN

LOCAL BUSINESS WOMAN

Pauline Stanley on Portland Women in Business

As a member of Portland Women in Business (WIB), local business woman Pauline Stanley understands the huge benefits that come from networking with a group of like-minded people. Here she shares her thoughts on the group and how the support and advice has helped her to grow. “I was introduced to Portland Women in Business by a young woman from another small business in Portland, who had shown me an extreme act of kindness by helping me in my business. She then went on to tell me about WIB and I joined up. “In the beginning I felt like a fish out of water and quite inadequate as I was being introduced to all these fantastic women who had terrific business skills and high educational experience. But that feeling of inadequacy soon disappeared as everyone was so friendly and encouraging. But still I wondered what I could offer the group until I realised that what I offer is a wealth of life experience. “We have had great guest speakers to listen and learn from, and it is great to get together with all these terrific people. Social media was my nemesis but one of our guest speakers gave an insight into how it can work really well for small business so I have persevered with it and can now say I can handle Facebook quite well. And it’s all thanks to our WIB group. “From when I was in my 20s, my dream was always to have my own small business but lack of finances was always a big issue. Over the years (since I was 15) I have worked in many different fields but most have been sales and people-orientated positions, and I have always loved my work.

“This all came to an end when my husband became very ill when he was only 48 and given only a short time to live. He was so ill I gave up all my work commitments and looked after him until his death eight years later. He was a remarkable man and he fought for so many years to hang in there. This part of my life became totally zoned in on looking after him and I know I did this very well. “It took me a long time after his death to be able to function again but I got through. For many years after he died I sold product at markets and was doing quite well but market life is very hard work. At this point I started to wonder about opening my own store. I had a little practice run in a small shop in Portland then decided to take the risk and so at the ripe young age of 61 started Pauline’s Absolutely Fabulous Accessories, and in September 2008, we opened our shop front. “I am very proud of my business and that I contribute to the community by supplying a unique small business and that I employ staff who are all great people. My message to all my fellow WIB colleagues – and to anyone out there wanting to join WIB – is never give up on a dream and that you are never too old to start trying new things. “I would like to commend the WIB committee for the work they do. There are so many people working behind the scenes to make things happen in Portland and when positive people take positive action good things happen!”

The Tea Tree Gallery is a vibrant licensed café and art space that offers a catering service along with sessional business and hospitality training. The business operates out of a historic church manse within the heart of the CBD with Portland’s town green at its front door. The business' apt catchphrase is “bringing back the art of hospitality”. Belinda White created this business six years ago and previously ran her own home-based business, and her parents owned and operated a successful cafe in Ballarat for 10 years, which she says gave her a great grounding in the behind-the-scenes operation of a small business. Belinda has been a Portland WIB member since its inception last year. What’s the best thing about being a woman in business? The personal development opportunities I’ve had access to, but closest to my heart is the opportunity to give others in the disability sector. To help enable another person’s journey to grow in ability and confidence to me is priceless. Why did you join Portland Women in Business? I joined to be part of an evolution of sorts! I also wanted to help encourage some incredible women I know in business within Portland to come out of the shadows. It is really easy in small micro business to feel isolated so to be given a platform to be accepted, even if we don’t all wear suits and ties to work each day, is fantastic. What are the biggest benefits for you of being a WIB member? The opportunity to foster and develop positive personal and business relationships with other busy women in the town and beyond, including SouthwestBIZ. It has given people an opportunity to get to know me better too. Also being part of the Committee for Portland gives me confidence that I am not working alone in praising this great town’s potential. Why would you encourage others to become members? The networking, support, and the bigger picture team environment. We are a strong, determined group of women in a great variety of businesses. We operate in a small town and I’ve found it refreshing to learn about their businesses and strong plans for the future. The diversity is quite inspiring. What’s different about Portland WIB that you haven’t got from being a member of other business associations? The amazing personal stories of resilience and determination that I have heard from my fellow members. I have been deeply moved by some, which have led me to a deeper understanding and respect for these individuals!

To meet other like-minded women and learn more about our local business network of friends. What are the biggest benefits for you of being a WIB member? The networking and confidence-building through such a dynamic group of women from so many different backgrounds who exchange information freely and are always there to offer support. Why would you encourage others to become members? It’s a fantastic opportunity for all women – regardless of age – to enjoy the fabulous meetings and not to feel isolated as working on your own can be very lonely at times. It is also great to meet new friends and keep up with the latest news. What’s different about Portland WIB that you haven’t got from being a member of other business associations? The friendships and the genuine loyalty that we all give to each other. Portland WIB is a fabulous group of talented and supportive ladies.

Money Tree Bookkeeping provides mobile bookkeeping services to businesses in southwest Victoria. With the introduction of cloud-based accounting and remote access technology, Money Tree is able to service clients wherever they are – at their office or Money Tree’s. Sarah established Money Tree Bookkeeping in September 2009 and has more than 20 years’ experience in the finance sector. She has been a Portland WIB member for two years. What’s the best thing about being a woman in business? Showing other young women who want to be their own boss that with a lot of hard work, dedication, a great family and team support – and time out for yourself – you can be empowered and build resilience for life’s challenges. Why did you join Portland Women in Business? To network with other like-minded women in business and to share our business experiences so that we can assist each other in our business journey. What are the biggest benefits for you of being a WIB member? Networking, the sharing of ideas and collaboration, self-promotion, the diversity of events to participate in, and the time it affords to relax away from the office. Why would you encourage others to become members? The networking opportunities, the opportunity to build relationships, and the opportunity to share experiences and build your knowledge. It’s also great for business promotion and allows you to support other local women in business. What’s different about Portland WIB that you haven’t got from being a member of other business associations? Portland WIB is a network exclusively for local business women who understand the complexities of running a business within a rural town.

a space of nurture and development for the mind as well as the body. An emphasis on respect and dignity at all times for the individual, and a focus on providing a touchstone of expert guidance is at the foundation of the new philosophy at Logans Beach Spa Retreat. Kristie hopes to create a centre of transformation for the mind, body, and spirit, placing an emphasis on establishing space for self-development through an acknowledgement of place. At the heart of this philosophy is the opportunity to create an avenue of escape, an outlet from the stresses of modern life in order to personally reflect and actively pursue the benefits of a healthy life. This method of health management enables an individual to take control of their quality of life in a more active way. “We are providing a space for people to actively examine and improve all the elements of their life,” Kristie says. “Where you can work on you, how you want to, with expert and caring advice supporting you along the way. It provides a place to escape, reset, and regenerate vitality. We are hoping to provide a place to work towards and celebrate small improvements, and often we find that big achievements can be realised, in all walks of life.” A major piece of the puzzle has

fallen into place for Kristie with the acquisition of Logans Beach Spa Retreat. The history of the area as a place of life, birth, and rejuvenation is an important aspect of Kristie’s philosophy of connecting and working with the environment. The cultural importance of the area has been a significant factor in Kristie’s decision to take on such a large transformation. The surrounding area’s history as a gathering place for the original nations that occupied the wider region, and the natural significance of the area as a whale nursery, has inspired the direction of the new venture as a source of reflection, transformation, and nurture. At the heart of these sentiments is a strong sense of responsibility to the environment and the desire to revive the cultural importance of the surroundings. This sense of responsibility to country has come from Kristie’s time spent in Arnhem Land volunteering with the Yothu Yindi Foundation at “the healing place”. Working with the much-loved matriarch at the time, Gulumbu Yunupingu, Kristie helped to create a space for young Yolngu women to learn about local herbal medicine and techniques used within the traditional culture. The program provided the young women with a greater knowledge of their own cultural heritage and lineage. The experience has taught Kristie

wner Kristie Hayden is embarking on a new and emerging approach that looks to combine ancient traditions with modern treatments, a methodology that has gained a lot of attention in the past few years. Traditional practices and local knowledge are fused together with modern methods to provide tried and tested, naturally sourced ingredients and combinations that enhance the spa experience. The focus on traditional medicine and healing practices brings the revitalising benefits of active components discovered and developed with the local ecosystem in mind, offering a more substantial connection for the individual to their environment that can help to initiate and foster greater respect and awareness. With more than 15 years of experience in the traditional medicine industry, Kristie has sourced reliable and trusted brands and products that complement the philosophies and knowledge she has gathered over the years. Brands such as Li’Tya, are known for their use of local, quality ingredients and have been developed in consultation with an indigenous advisory board. This attention to detail ensures the appropriate use of local knowledge. These strong ethical foundations fit firmly alongside Kristie’s own ideals and will become a major focus in Kristie’s desire to create

the value of reviving the practices and rituals that have fostered and developed in any one area over thousands of years. “I learnt that it was the knowledge and respect that was important, understanding and acknowledging the local environment and customs that have evolved over centuries brings a new perspective, not just of yourself and your own journey, but the development of your own surroundings and environment.” Working with local elder Rob Lowe, Kristie has begun by documenting the meaning of the artwork and symbols that are dotted around the Spa Retreat, and discovering the indigenous historical significance of the area. Elements such as the smoking bowl placed on the location during the building of the Spa Retreat will become important aspects of the move to reignite a cultural attachment to the area. While ancient knowledge and practices lie at the heart of this new transformation, it is the expert advice and high-quality services and innovations that will bring a new evolution of nurture and development. A range of packages and services will be rolled out over the coming months designed to offer new and existing customers the opportunity to experience the new innovations.

BRINGING THE BEST OF BUSINESS TO THE SOUTHWEST. Monday 10 August 9.30am - 5pm Lighthouse Theatre

As SouthwestBIZ hits the streets, last-minute preparations are being made for BizFest 2015, which will be held on Monday 10th August at the Lighthouse Theatre in Warrnambool.

BizFest – the brainchild of Warrnambool marketing and communications agency o2 Media – will be staged as part of the Victorian Government's Small Business Festival.

Ms Foster said a third aim for BizFest was to provide great networking opportunities for local businesses. These included pre-dinner drinks and a special dinner hosted by Deakin University.”

o2 Media Director Karen Foster says BizFest will feature high-profile keynote speakers Jim Penman and Carolyn Creswell as well as a rich program of workshops covering topics of importance and interest to professional people.

Another fantastic local talent will be appearing at BizFest 2015, with popular Cobden acoustic musician Luke Bourchier performing twice during the full-day program.

Luke performs a wide range of covers and loves to entertain, whether it’s with easylistening fingerpicking tunes performed quietly in the background, or classic covers that create a party atmosphere that will get the dance floor stomping. Luke says he loves performing at a range of gigs as “every gig is interesting”. “In the May just gone, I performed in front of several thousands of people at the Grampians Grape Escape, which was amazing. It’s a privilege to be asked to perform at weddings – they’re always really special – and my favourite haunt would have to be in Timboon, at the Distillery. I love it there.”

BIZ: What if I am looking to purchase new computer – can I still get Windows 10? Rod: You’ll be able to purchase new computers with Windows 10 as soon as August and it’s not likely to change the price of a new computer. There is likely to be some crossover time where Windows 8 is still available, either by choice or on old stock. So if you buy a new computer without Windows 10, you should still be able to take advantage of the free Windows 10 upgrade until July 2016. BIZ: If I am a registered Windows user, how can I get Windows 10? Rod: Windows 10 will be delivered via Windows Update. You may have already noticed your Windows 7 or 8 computer prompting you to prepare for the upgrade. There is no need to obtain a Windows 10 disc. BIZ: Ok, I am ready to do the upgrade to Windows 10. Do I have to reload and start again? Rod: No, Windows 10 is a major upgrade, as distinct from a full reload. It is an interactive upgrade designed for a novice user to install. This makes the migration easier, especially where a large number of computers are involved. Some software features are being dropped, e.g. Windows Media Center, which some people may have been using as a Smart TV multimedia library. It’s important to check before upgrading depending what features you use.

ut team that power with a few strategic hashtags and a developed social media community and you’ve got yourself marketing gold, according to Destination Warrnambool’s Catherine Kelson. “Destination Warrnambool (DW) gives your customers a platform to spread the word about why they love your business, using strategic hashtags as anchors that are shared on many different social media platforms and communities,” she explains. “While your customers are Instagramming their life, you become part of it and their routine. By encouraging them to use specific hashtags, the photo they post on Instagram or Facebook will be automatically picked up by our feeds and will feature on our Facebook pages, complete with your business name. “With our combined network reaching more than 50,000 people each week, you are bound to inspire new and old customers.” Destination Warrnambool is a

way of spreading the good news about your business – by signing up, you have access to special hashtags that help share your social media content and reach thousands more

people, not just your own audience. Catherine says the Destination Warrnambool network has a mobile

app, Instagram account and many different Facebook pages that all have fantastically engaged audiences that want to like and follow, as well as share their great local experiences. The theory behind using hashtags with Destination Warrnambool is about building online communities that love certain things, whether it’s shopping, eating out or seeing the sights of the southwest. The mathematics are simple – content + hashtags = huge followings and reach. “Destination Warrnambool creates town pride, and it’s a platform where we turn community members into brand ambassadors for their favourite place, shops, food and things to do.” The DW Facebook pages are constantly sharing user-generated content through the use of hashtags such as #love3280, #live3280, #eat3280 and #shop3280 to name a few. “Destination Warrnambool picks up this information from users and spreads the messages of

local businesses that are a part of the network. As it’s based on peer recommendations, businesses no longer have to tell their customers how good they are – the locals do it for them, which is fantastic.” The Destination Warrnambool mobile app – available free in the App Store and Google Play – has business listings with direct access to phone calling, email, web and Facebook links. It also includes a comprehensive events calendar and good news stories about what’s happening around Warrnambool and surrounding areas within an hour’s radius. Catherine holds Destination Warrnambool information sessions for business owners so they can learn how it works and what it can do for their business before they sign up. A yearly membership is $488. She is also working to establish Destination Port Fairy, Destination Hamilton and Destination Portland networks. Save huge amounts on your business’ energy bills with

TRUE VALUE solar WHETHER YOU’RE A SMALL RETAIL BUSINESS OR A LARGE MANUFACTURING FIRM, YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO SAVE THOUSANDS ON YOUR ENERGY BILLS BY INSTALLING A SOLAR SYSTEM.

arrnambool’s True Value Solar Commercial Manager Steven Brocklehurst says solar is the way to go for business, which has the ability to utilise most if not all of the solar energy a system generates. “Businesses are in the great position of being able to use the majority of the power they generate because, as opposed to a house where people are mostly out during the day, a business uses the power as it’s being generated – during daylight hours,” Steven says. There are many different solar power systems to choose from and True Solar Energy will do a full energy audit focusing on power consumption before providing a report with recommendations on what would suit your premises best. “We tailor our recommendations to a customer’s budget and needs, and break down the report into how much you will save on your energy costs,” Steven says. “Whether you want to save 20% or the full 100%, we can tailor a system to suit.”

WARRNAMBOOL SPECIAL

Steven says the proportion of his business made up of business customers has grown dramatically in recent years with decreasing solar prices and feed-in tariffs. He says it’s well worth business owners investigating a solar system because of the huge savings that can be made. “The best way to make the most of your solar power system is to use as much power as you can before feeding it back into the grid. This is where businesses have the advantage – they’re in the premises during the day when the power is being generated. “As an example, the return on investment for the 12 Rocks Beach Bar Café in Port Campbell, where we’ve recently installed a system, has been fantastic. The system has produced more than 4400 kw hours from March to June and the café used all that power, saving them $1120.” Commercial systems are generally priced start from $5000 with True Value Solar offering good commercial finance deals including rent to own. True Value Solar also provides solar hot water systems for dairy farms, and LED lights. ä

HOTEL WARRNAMBOOL Support the Karma Keg at the

KARMA KEGS team in mid-July.

Hotel Warrnambool Owner

Stephen Phillpot says this will be the

first Karma Keg the hotel has put on, but he plans to do more for other charities.

“I wanted to support a community

organisation and after seeing a Karma Keg done at another venue, thought this would be a great way to do that. No-one has done it before in Warrnambool, so I hope the community get behind it,” Stephen says. The Hotel will have the Karma Keg of Carlton Draught on tap from 5pm on Friday August 21, with patrons paying as much or as little as they like. But beware the karma if you take the latter option – legend has it that a man who paid very little for his pot was greeted by a parking ticket when he left the pub. The Warrnambool Hospice was first incorporated in 2010 and since then has been working to establish its funding base and appoint its first care team. The team is a group

of dedicated volunteers made up of people including nurses, former nurses, aged care workers and others who are now fully trained in palliative care and are ready to start work. Hospice Director Tamara Vistarini says she is really grateful to the Hotel for donating their first Karma Keg to the hospice. “I have been totally overwhelmed by the generosity of the community so far – it has been amazing how much support we’ve received,” Tamara says. “We are a not-for-profit organisation supported 100% by the community – we receive no government funding – and our service is free to those who live in the Warrnambool district.”

aying whatever you like for a beer at your local pub sounds a bit odd but under the Karma Kegs principle, there’s a very good reason for it. Karma Kegs, as the name suggests, is all about doing a good deed for charities in need. And this month, you can help the newly established Warrnambool and District Community Hospice – which provides free palliative care – by drinking at the Hotel Warrnambool on Friday August 21. All the funds raised from selling Karma Keg pots on August 21 will go to the Warrnambool and District Community Hospice, which provides compassionate care in the home for people who are dying and which just launched their first care

Live music,

lunch and wine at Pierrepoint Wines Cellar Door this October

With a picturesque setting, live music and amazing local wine and food, lunch in the vineyard at Pierrepoint Cellar Door on Sunday October 25 is sure to be a wonderful experience. Pierrepoint’s Jennifer Lacey says musician George John will play at the winery again in October, after successful performances over the years. “George usually plays at Pierrepoint twice a year, in April and October on both days over a weekend, but this year he is able to commit to Sunday only. George plays songs from the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s and is always a huge hit with our guests who have enjoyed his performances whilst relaxing at our cellar door,” she says. “We are really looking forward to welcoming him back to Pierrepoint; he has a wonderful talent of not only entertaining but of also engaging the

crowd with his endearing & jovial personality. His performance will be matched with lunch, which will be prepared by a local chef, and wines from most of the Henty region will be available to enjoy during the afternoon.” Pierrepoint Wines, established by Andrew and Jennifer Lacey in 1998, specialises in producing Pinot Noir, Alexandra Chardonnay and Nick’s Pick Pinot Gris wines. The Estate is located in Tarrington, 10km south east of Hamilton, in the Henty Wine Region and also provides bed and breakfast accommodation. Lunch at the Pierrepoint Wines’ cellar door with George John will be held on Sunday October 25 from 12 noon. Bookings essential, please phone 5572 5553. Mexican influences delight the palate in

San Diego

now showing at the WAG

With Ian Robb

Recently on a trip to Alaska I had occasion to return to Australia by way of a city in the south of California, San Diego. This city had its historical roots in the Spanish empire but was annexed by the USA in the 19th century. The city has a Mexican feel to it and is vibrant in its tempo – something always seems to be happening in this colorful and interesting place. It has an eclectic food mix from around the world focused in the centre of town, but the Mexican influence has changed many common European dishes so that you find a taste sensation that is quite unexpected. The use of classic recipes with the addition of unusual ingredients is interesting when correctly balanced. For instance, the local common estuary prawn is called the spot prawn. We would normally have this grilled with aioli or mayonnaise but try spot prawns with chilli oil, guanciale (smoked pork neck), garlic and borage flowers and the flavour has a new perspective. Manila clams with chorizo sauce, charred rapini, ciabatta and saffron aioli take on a delicious flavour and

highlight the subtlety of the sweet seasalt dry flavour of the clams. Perhaps you might like a crispy corn cake with spring vegetables, adobe sauce or charred ramps or grouper with celery root chowder, tutti frutti peas, asparagus, clams and marble potatoes. These dishes are by courtesy of the Grant Grill on 5th Street which was built by the son of Ulysses S Grant of Civil War fame. The US Grant Hotel is a hotel built in the art deco style and faithfully restored to its original glory. San Diego has some of the last remaining architectural styles of the 18, 19 and 20th centuries. The streets have hardly been touched. San Diego is so worth a visit. Take the ‘Surf Rider’ from Los Angeles station, which itself is an Art Deco gem, along the fabled Californian coast. The track is literally on the beach front. You can see dolphins, beaches, boats and surfers. It’s only three hours. It is also the home of the USA’s Pacific Fleet and if you want an illustration of American wealth, take a look at their war ships, they do tours.

Visitors to the Warrnambool Art Gallery (WAG) can experience southwest Victoria through a different lens, with Kathryn Ryan’s A Quiet Place running through to November. This is the third exhibition surveying the work of artists who take the western district of Victoria as their inspiration, with Ron Quick’s The Spaces Between held in 2013 and Glenn Morgan’s Shock Treatment in 2014. “Growing up in in the western district has had a lasting effect on my work,” Kathryn says. “I’m really looking forward to presenting drawings and paintings at WAG that show my love for this place.” Around 35 works have been assembled from collections across the nation to celebrate and showcase Ryan’s oeuvre for this special project. WAG Curator Murray Bowes said that settling on a final selection to exhibit was difficult considering the volume and quality of Kathryn’s work. “From the more than 400 works produced by Kathryn, we have worked hard to gather those pieces

we felt best show her skill as a painter but also celebrate the landscape peculiar to this area,” Murray says. “Kathryn has a way of capturing the beautiful and soft light of the western district skies and the way it plays on the pines that dot the landscape.” Kathryn has recently returned to Warrnambool after a number of years living in Dubai. She said that the impact of the move from the western district to the Arabian Desert and back has informed her more recent work. “From windswept cypress and hedges punctuating the vast farming areas, to the fall of light at the end of the day, the landscape emerging through fog, to more recent explorations of shadow and light from my time based in the UAE and my return back to the south west of Victoria, I’ve never stopped painting,” she says. “I’m really excited about the opportunity to work with WAG on this exhibition.” A Quiet Place will run until November 22. Entry is free.

Fiona’s sustainable house

WITH RISING ENERGY COSTS AND INCREASING ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE, SUSTAINABILITY WHEN BUILDING A NEW HOME SHOULD BE TOP OF EVERYONE’S MINDS, ACCORDING TO SOUTHWEST ARCHITECT FIONA GOLDING FROM LIVE ARCHITECTURE. Fiona says that new home builders have a fantastic opportunity to incorporate sustainable and energy efficient features into their building’s design, which is what she did recently with a new Merrivale home she designed. The home – which will be open for inspection during Sustainable House Day on Sunday 13 September – has a 6.3 star energy rating but not only that, it makes the most of the small block size it is situated on.

“On this small urban block I designed a bespoke home with multiple outdoor living zones to extend the interior spaces,” Fiona explains. “Windows were placed in alignment across the home to allow for extended views beyond and increase the spaciousness of an otherwise modest footprint. Adaptable spaces, ample storage and simple living are the keys to this abode.” Fiona says the sustainable features of the home include highrating insulation batts and foil-faced blanket in the roof, and high-rating insulation batts and reflective bubble wrap in the external and internal walls to conserve energy. “The living areas are oriented north, and the use of south and west oriented windows was kept to

ct As an archite love this is what I omes – designing h in response to te their immedia . environments

a minimum,” she says. “We also used aluminium-improved double-glazed windows, and incorporated passive crossflow ventilation with openings on two different sides of each room. There are ceiling fans in the bedrooms, living and dining areas, and hydronic heating panels throughout. And last but not least, the home also has a ‘green switch’ for switching off all stand-by power.” Aside from the energy conservation features, the home also harvests its own water and stores it in an on-site tank. The use of natural materials has also lent a sustainable look to the home with plywood, recycled bricks,

red ironbark timber and exposed concrete slabs also helping increase thermal mass for energy conservation. Fiona, who established Live Architecture in 2011, says she loves working in sustainable building design for the creativity it affords. “In recent decades, our homes have become isolated, repetitive and unhealthy artificial boxes, which as a result have both a negative impact on both us and our environment,” she says. “Sustainable design is the complete opposite of all that – creating interactive, site-responsive and healthy indoor / outdoor spaces

that are actually more comfortable to live in! Sustainable design to me is a holistic way of thinking that takes so much more into consideration than just the building. “As an architect this is what I love – designing homes in response to their immediate environments.” Fiona has more than 15 years’ experience in architecture and is currently studying a Masters in Sustainable Practice. She will be at Sustainable House Day to share her expertise, answer queries and chat about easy ways how every home can become a little more sustainable.

Sustainable House Day in Warrnambool is being organised by the Warrnambool Environment Action Group (WEAG) and will see several sustainable homes open to the public, with the home owners and professionals available to chat about their features and how they have worked. For more information about Sustainable House Day on September 13, join the WEAG Facebook group or phone WEAG’s Heidi Wisniewski on 5561 3904.

for an inexpensive

BEFORE

With Clinton Krause // Architect

N

early all kitchens less than 30 years old will be made using a system of cupboard cabinets known in the industry as ‘Carcasses’. These are usually banks of individually made boxes made by the joiner and brought onto site and screwed together to form continuous lengths of cabinetry. These cabinets can be easily refurbished with new doors and drawer fronts without any major impact on adjoining surfaces in the kitchen. It is also relatively easy to reconfigure a Carcasse converting – for example, a pair of doors into a bank of drawers so that the function of an older kitchen can be dramatically improved. Just unclip door panels or unscrew the door fronts and take them along to the joiners for use as a template for the sizing of new fronts. Make sure that you use a numbering

system – using pencil on the backs of the panels to ensure that the right panel is returned to the correct location in the kitchen. All cabinet makers will have a showroom with an extensive range of laminates, vinyl wrap or solid timber panel options and will be able to advise of the relative costs between the various products. When ready, the new panel fronts will clip straight back into the kitchen carcasses and the hinges allow for multiple minor adjustments allowing even the DIY novice to achieve a professional result. A number of companies now offer resurfacing of existing benchtops with a range of products including real and reconstituted stone. In most cases the new product is less than 10mm thick and can be installed to retain existing splashbacks, sinks and appliances. Professionally installed, the material can extend over bench

edges and around corners, resulting in a seamless, durable surface that is visually indistinguishable from solid stone benchtops.

Upgrading sinks, taps and even the oven and cooktop is also usually straightforward and can give an old kitchen a new lease of life. Most of these items are standard sizes and are interchangeable with more modern fittings. Remember that all electrical and plumbing work must be carried out by a qualified contractor. Don’t forget the finishing touches such as door handles and other décor items. Replacing handles is easy and can make an immediate impact. Make sure you check the spacing of the screw holes so that you can replace like with like – but again these are fairly standardised and you

will find a range of matching options to select from. Consider improving the lighting around the kitchen. Most older kitchens have appalling lighting – usually from overhead downlights that create shadows over work surfaces. Advances in technology mean that LED strip lighting can be very easily installed along the underside of overhead cupboards providing long expanses of good lighting directly onto benchtops where it is most needed. Dated pendants and feature lighting can also be easily replaced with more interesting and visually appealing fittings. And last but not least – remove clutter. WHAT TYPE

of investment

IS BETTER FOR YOU? I SAW AN ARTICLE RECENTLY WRITTEN BY THE BARE FOOT INVESTOR (I THINK) IN WHICH HE STATED THAT BLUE CHIP SHARES WOULD HAVE TO BE THE BEST INVESTMENT OUT OF REAL ESTATE, SHARES, AND CASH. HOWEVER, I DON’T AGREE!

WITH GARRY LOCKETT // FROM LOCKETT AND CO., PORT FAIRY

Those who favour shares usually state you should buy shares for the long haul. In fact, they often say “put them in a drawer and don’t touch them for years”! Well, that is an exciting investment I must say. If you were of that mind set you could buy many things and lock them away (such as a new car, or a painting) and you would generally make a good profit when you sold them many years later. Just imagine a new 1960s Holden with just 100 kilometres on the clock in brandnew condition, and how much that would be worth. Then consider that you would be 55 years older and you would have had no enjoyment (or use) out of it in all those years. It sounds rather silly but this is usually the advice given by investment advisers regarding what you should do with shares! In this one life given to us it is essential to enjoy it, have fun, and take a few risks as well as create equity. You show me a person who purchased a heap of shares when 34 southwest

he was young and has never sold or traded any of them – and I will show you a reasonably wealthy but very boring person (the sort of person who makes a loaf of bread last a week). So two old guys meet St Peter after their demise and St Peter says to the wealthy one: “What did you do in your life that was notable?” St Peter responds: “Well Sir, when I was young I bought a heap of CBA shares at $5 and now I am worth millions.” And then St Peter says to the other bloke: “What did you do that was notable?” The reply: “Well Sir, I got married, had four kids, started a business that went broke, then I took the family to live in Queensland for a few years, then I started up another business and it was doing OK until you summonsed me here.” “Right,” says St Peter. “You can come inside but you (pointing to the wealthy person) can sit down on this chair and wait for another lifetime, because that’s all you have done with your life!” Get the point? There is more in

life than just accumulating wealth. I and life game by using all that cash to am often asked when I will retire and buy all the then-cheap property (and my answer is always the same (apart shares) and they could have then lived from the occasional “bugger off”) – life to the fullest. Nuh, they kept the “And do what?!?” The reply to that is cash in CASH ... which of course is usually: “Do something you really worth less now than it was like and want to do ...” Well then. In fact, it is worth guess what, I am doing less EVERY year! just that right now, For me, there YOU CAN’T and a person who IN Y IL M is nothing better FA RAISE A enjoys their job S, E R A SH F O than buying a A HEAP never has to work OR PAINT THEM R crap property O (with apologies to TY HOLD A PAR and completely Bart Simpson). CANNOT SEE HOW SHARES WOULD BE A BETTER BUY THAN PROPERTY IN THE LONG RUN. A COMMON ARGUMENT AGAINST PROPERTY AS AN INVESTMENT IS THE COST OF BUYING AND THE COST OF SELLING COMPARED TO THE MINISCULE COST OF BUYING AND SELLING SHARES. SURE, THE COST IS MUCH GREATER WHEN YOU DEAL IN REAL ESTATE AND AS A RESULT YOU HANG ONTO IT A LOT LONGER BUT THE GAINS ARE GENERALLY A LOT BIGGER TOO.

shares, or paint them or hold a party in them or even keep warm AND if you bought the right type of property it would be worth more than enough to make your existence on the planet worthwhile, and is more than sufficient to please St Peter. Those who have invested all (or most) in cash have had their day in the sun when the Global Financial Crisis hit, and didn’t they crow about it. Around the water cooler in the office and in restaurants you could hear them crowing that they don’t care a rat’s bottom about the GFC because they had a heap of cash. If those same half brain-dead people had a modicum of intelligence that’s when they could have won the money

making a tax-free heap of loot. Unfortunately, the present generation usually build a two story mini-mansion with everything including a bloody home theatre (that ends up as a storage room) and spending the rest of their life paying it off – if they don’t fall off the perch first (from boredom).

There is no “real life” proper

answer as to which is the best investment between real estate and shares (cash doesn’t even count) because there is only one investment wherein you can have your cake AND eat it – and that is real estate.

Real men (and women) invest in real

estate ... and the others invest in shares. Tread your own road.

There were 64 births at PDH for the year compared to 29 the previous financial year. The big increase follows the return of 24-7 anaesthetist coverage and the recruitment of gynaecologist obstetrician Dr David Morris who joined Drs Ghazala Irshad and Fariha Irshad and experienced midwives in the expanded PDH maternity team. First-time mothers are now able to have their babies in Portland, although some more complex cases, such as twins, are still referred to Warrnambool. PDH Director of Nursing Ros Alexander said local families were appreciating the expanded service and the ability to have babies close to home. “We are able to safely deliver significantly more babies in Portland because we have theatre access, consultant obstetrician and anaesthetists,” she said. “Parents have been very happy with the level of care and support at PDH.” PDH now has a full complement of the specialist anaesthetists for the first time in several years.

In other Portland District Health news Portland District Health has retained its reputation as one of Australia’s cleanest hospitals with a spotless 100 per cent cleaning audit for the second year in a row. The perfect result means more than just looking good. The perfect cleanliness record is having a positive impact on patients with the hospital continuing to achieve infection-free status. PDH’s cleanliness has consistently rated in the high 90s in the annual external cleaning but to receive a perfect score in successive years is remarkable. PDH Director of Corporate Services Ros Jones said the result was outstanding and a credit to the hard-working Environmental Services Team. “To achieve the highest possible score two years in a row is amazing,” Ms Jones said. “It creates a great environment to work in and an extremely clean environment for patients. It has a flow-on effect making the hospital less susceptible to superbugs and infections, which is terrific news for the community. “PDH has an excellent record of providing a safe and healthy place for patients and having such a clean hospital enables us to keep up that good work.” Environmental Services Team Leader Barb James said the result was due to the dedicated and passionate work of the team of about 20 workers. “The auditor told us it was spotless…she couldn’t find a bit of dust,” Ms James said. “It’s most unusual to get 100 per cent, let alone two years in a row.” “We couldn’t have achieved this result without the dedicated and passionate efforts of every staff member. Everyone in our team takes pride in the area they clean.”

Hospitality training returns to South West TAFE Hospitality training is returning to South West TAFE with a new course to have people job-ready by the end of the year. Hospitality courses were curtailed after budget cuts at the start of 2014 but are being revived due to industry demand and in response to high local youth unemployment. The Certificate III in Hospitality started again in early August. South West TAFE Director of Tourism and Hospitality Marcia McCarthy said the new course would provide practical experience and deliver highly skilled hospitality staff to an industry crying out for help. Marcia says employers are looking for people with training and knowledge. “This course is very strongly geared to practical skills that will result in students getting work, including front of house, coffee making, responsible serving of alcohol, customer service, and preparing simple dishes. It’s a great career if you love working with people.” Marcia says skilled staff shortages are evident across the industry and the course would support the local tourism and hospitality industries and help address high youth unemployment. The Certificate III had been separated to deliver a course that will have job-ready hospitality workers by the end of the year. The course will be delivered three days per week along with industry-based placement. South West TAFE is also reducing fees to make the course viable and a good investment for students.

Work starts on Mt Leura Reserve Geotrails

New mobile towers for Southern Grampians Shire

Work started in early July on a new walking trail at Mount Leura which aims to further promote the recreational and educational values of the reserve. Corangamite Shire Manager Environment and Emergency Lyall Bond says a Geotrail that utilises part of an old road would showcase the geological features of the area for users. The Mt Leura and Mt Sugarloaf Management Committee has been working with Corangamite Shire and Federation University to plan the new walking trail, and the project was outlined as a key objective in the Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf Management Plan 2013-2018. Lyall says the Camperdown area is highly significant from a Geological point of view with natural features like Mt Leura, Mt Elephant, Lake Bullen Merri and Lake Purrumbete making up the Lakes and Craters Precinct of the Kanawinka Geopark.

Nareen, Mirranatwa, Culla, Victoria Valley, Pigeon Ponds and Muntham will soon receive new mobile towers after benefiting from the significant investment by the Federal Government, Telstra and the State Government as part of the Mobile Black Spot Program. Telstra will build 429 new mobile towers nationally, including across southwest Victoria, extending mobile coverage into over 400 communities nationally who currently have little or no coverage in or around their towns. Southern Grampians Mayor Cr Peter Dark says the announcement is fantastic for the area after many years presenting evidence for greater coverage. Extensive community consultation undertaken by the Council found mobile voice and broadband coverage is vitally important to the community and there are significant mobile coverage gaps which need to be eliminated. A lack of access to reliable, high-speed broadband and mobile telecommunications places the region at a significant economic and social disadvantage.

Camperdown Cruise accommodation wanted Camperdown will again host the Camperdown Cruise Rockabilly Festival from Thursday 22 October to Sunday 25 October 2015 and event organisers need help with accommodation. Corangamite Shire Council Economic Development Officer Sara Napier is asking local residents who have a spare room or a house available to consider making it available for Camperdown Cruise visitors. “Homestay accommodation is often preferred by visitors as it provides an authentic local experience and the opportunity to get to know our residents. Importantly households also have an opportunity to make money from billeting host guests,” Sara says. The festival is Camperdown’s largest event and a premium rockabilly event in Australia with widespread local support from the business community and Corangamite Shire Council. The event continues to grow in size each year, and it is expected that it will once again attract thousands of visitors to Camperdown and surrounding towns, including people from interstate and overseas. People wishing to register their available rooms or properties for rent over the festival weekend in October should do so online via the Camperdown Cruise website at www.camperdowncruise.com. au or by contacting Council’s Community Relations team on 5593 7100.

It’s all about making fulfilling choices and providing students with a better lifestyle because they’re doing something they enjoy.” South West TAFE has four Education Pathways Officers who spend one-on-one time with students to ensure they find the right course. Jo says the officers give career advice to school leavers, people who want a career change, those who have been injured at work and can no longer work in their field, and people who have “no idea what pathway they want to take”. “We sit down with them to work out a way forward, asking them what they are interested in and passionate about, and what they might like to do for a job,” she says. “Once we have this information, we then lead them to the courses that might suit, giving them written information, teacher contacts and information about the pathways they lead to, so they can make an informed choice on the course they enrol in. “We can also help those who start a course and find it’s not quite right for them. If you want to “find a job you love so you’ll never work a day in your life”, South West TAFE will take you there. South West TAFE Education Pathways Officer Jo Healey says the Open Days are the perfect opportunity for prospective students to get a clear vision of where they can go with their passion, whether it’s creating graphic design masterpieces, working with people in the health field, or creating amazing make-up and hairstyles. “We spend so much of our lives working, it’s very important to make sure we not only enjoy our work, but we’re also inspired by it,” Jo says. “South West TAFE’s Open Days are the perfect place to come if you want a job you love. What inspires you?

What inspires you?

What inspires you?

I really like the idea of working with people on their physical and emotional well being, which I believe are really important things to nurture.

I really enjoy helping people achieve their goals by giving them a healthy approach to living and helping them sustain a healthy lifestyle. I like to enjoy what I do for a living, and motivating people is fantastic. I also like to keep myself fit and I find that motivates others to do the same.

I love the hands-on practical work involved in computing and IT, and the technology behind it.

Why did you get into massage? I’ve always liked the idea of bodies and movement – it fascinated me – and working in this area was something I have wanted to do for a long time. I had a small window of opportunity with taking up the TAFE course, and everything in my personal life fell into place, so enrolling in the massage course worked very well for me. What have you enjoyed most about studying at South West TAFE? We have studied so many different modules, it has been wonderful learning about the different aspects of massage and other modalities such as reflexology, cupping, lymphatic drainage, physiotherapy and acupuncture to name a few. I think next year I would like to hone in on one or two areas and refine my skills. The other thing that has been wonderful with my TAFE course is the amount of support I’ve received. The teachers and local professionals who come in to talk to us have been wonderful, and they don’t just teach you the massage component. The course has also taught me how to run a business as well so it’s been very practical.

Why did you get into this field? I was at a crossroad with my previous career and wasn’t very happy with what I was doing. I wanted to do something that made me come alive, and personal training and keeping fit was something I was always interested in and enjoyed. What have you enjoyed most about studying at South West TAFE? The hands-on learning was awesome - we learnt a lot more that way than just doing an online course. All the extra input from the teachers was brilliant, and they were really supportive and really experienced which helped me out a lot. I really enjoyed it.

Why did you get into this field? I always enjoyed working with computers and IT when I was in high school so I chose to do the course at South West TAFE so I could get then go on to the university degree later on. When I start working as a computer systems engineer, I’ll be working on networking and server-based projects, as well as working with all the computing hardware. What have you enjoyed most about studying at South West TAFE? I really loved the hands-on practical nature of the course – we actually get to work on what we’re learning about and it’s much more practical than other IT courses that I have done. We’ve also had local professionals come in and talk to us about the practicalities of working in the industry. One of those was from Warrnambool Cheese and Butter, so we got a great sense of what it’s like working in a large company on their IT systems.
