As we move into spring, the longer days and fresh weather are a great prompt to think about getting a bit more active. So, in this edition of Southwark Life we’ve got some top tips for getting healthy, particularly if you’re new to exercise. We’re committed to making it easier for residents in Southwark to be healthy and active through our exciting free swim and gym offer. Registration for the new pilot scheme for young people and over 60s is opening shortly, so do turn to page six to find out more.

This issue is packed with some great articles, including an update on the 11,000 new council homes project, suggestions for a quirky day out in the borough and ideas on how you can get gardening in our parks and open spaces.

I also found Fariah’s thoughts on page ten on what she has learnt about succeeding in business very inspiring, and I hope you will too. She’s a graduate of our Apprenticeship programme and it’s amazing to think that our scheme has been running for ten years now; plus there are also some great suggestions for other schemes the council offers to get young people into work.

Active for all If you or someone you know has a disability and loves sport – or maybe wants to get more active – then we’re delighted that Disability Sports Coach (DSC) has relaunched their community club in Southwark, funded by the council. Coaching will take place every Saturday at the Camberwell Leisure Centre from 3pm to 5pm. The Paralympic and multi sport sessions will be delivered by two qualified DSC coaches and the club is open to anyone with a disability and aged 11 or over.

It’s only fair…

Southwark celebrated Fairtrade Fortnight from 23 February to 8 March and Southwark Council has called on local businesses and residents to consider selling or using Fairtrade products.

Cllr Ian Wingfield, Deputy Leader and cabinet member for communities, employment and business visited Hej, a local Fairtrade café, to celebrate.

From using Fairtrade sugar in your homemade muffins to serving Fairtrade coffee in your café, using these products is a great way to ensure a fairer future for farmers in countries around the world.

The Big Lunch The Big Lunch is about neighbours all over the UK getting together for lunch. Last year over 4 million people took part by organising street parties where they live. This year it’s taking place on 7 June and it’s not tricky to apply. Get together three neighbours, including you, who agree to organise the party. Our cash offices are closing We are closing our cash offices at Walworth and Peckham on Tuesday 31 March. This decision has been made as the use of this service has been steadily declining over the last few years. If your older persons’ Freedom Pass expires on 31 March 2015, you should have received a letter telling you how to renew your pass. You must follow the instructions to make sure you receive your new pass and continue enjoying free travel.

Easier ways to contact the council You can now access almost all council services online. Simply sign up for your personal MySouthwark account at www.southwark.gov. uk/mysouthwark Here you can access services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year from the comfort of your own home. In fact, unless you have an emergency which you need to report immediately by phone, you can do pretty much everything online.

Following a successful trial last September, when we piloted new operating hours at the council’s contact centre, we received around a 40 per cent decrease in calls. We are now making these changes permanent from 1 April 2015. For some services, such as the registering of births, deaths and marriages, you will still be able to call the council between 9am to 5pm on weekdays. The emergency repairs service will still be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Get energised As we get ready to launch our free swim and gym pilot scheme, we look at how to get going on those spring plans to get fit and healthy

he best way to see results (and keep them) is to integrate activity into your weekly routine. To get you started, or indeed keep you motivated, we asked one of our fitness experts from Dulwich Leisure Centre for some top tips on what really works.

Heart health Our expert says: It’s really important to look after your heart health whatever your age but especially as you get older – try and get moving little and often. Whether it’s taking a longer route to the shops, or heading to the pool for a quick session before you head home, it all helps to keep a healthy heart.

• Make sure every day includes 30 minutes of moderate activity – anything that gets your heart rate up – either two 15 minute sessions or three ten minute sessions • While walking is one of the best ways to help your heart, gardening, housework and other day-to-day activity like taking the stairs also counts towards maintaining heart health.

Weight loss Our expert says: For all those wanting a bit of inspiration for those weight loss goals, here are a few tips to help turn up your fitness in the gym or the pool and really start seeing results.

• Combine cardio, like running or cycling, with resistance by upping the level on your machine, keeping your heart rate constant. You can find the heart rate recommended for your age on your machine at the gym • Exercising for a full 30 minutes either in the pool, gym or even in your local park will help your overall fitness levels, helping you to lose weight faster. You can also try interval training, 30 seconds sprint and 30 seconds rest. Whether you’re rowing or cross-training, it will really make those seconds count • Remember, eating a balanced diet is important whatever your goals, so make sure you are fuelling your body with healthy protein both before and after workouts.

• Try working out with a friend – whether it’s a swim, gym or walking the dog. Combining exercise with a weekly catch up can be just what you need to make the habit stick • Fit exercise into your daily routine. As spring appears walking to work all or part of the way, taking up cycling, or carving out some time for a swim on the way home can all help to release stresses of your day and tick the exercise box • Seek expert advice. For guidance, and to ensure you’re getting an effective and motivated workout, treat yourself to a personal training session or try an exercise class at one of our leisure centres • Try focusing on a challenge or upcoming event and make goals realistic; add in key milestones to help remind you of your progress • Start slowly and gradually increase intensity of exercise as your body adjusts. If a ten minute brisk walk is all you can manage, don’t get discouraged, keep going and one day you’ll be doing 30 minutes.

Mental health Our expert says: Exercise produces lots of feel good endorphins, and releasing emotional stress through exercise may really help give you balance and calm in your daily life.

• Try mind and body exercise classes such as yoga, tai-chi and pilates, all available at your local leisure centre • Group classes like Zumba are not just gentle cardio but also lots of fun, so why not give it a go?

• And if nothing else, get out and about at least once a day for a fresh, brisk walk.

You need to be determined even when things are going pear-shaped. Did you know that it took Thomas Edison 1,000 tries to invent the light bulb?

Nothing worth having comes easy and being able to learn from your mistakes, bounce back from failure and maintain your determination is essential to success.

Don’t let negative opinions hold you back

We often ask others such as friends, teachers, parents and colleagues for advice when we have ideas and sometimes they may be negative about ideas we have – they may not think it is achievable or the idea doesn’t appeal to them. The key is to remember that these are just the opinions of another person. Don’t let other peoples ‘no’s’ limit your future.

Of course there may be times when the other person is giving you good advice which you should listen to.

Think about the advice you receive carefully and do your own research.

Ever heard the saying your thoughts become your actions? Change your thoughts and you can change your life.

Stop thinking about what is holding you back from achieving and start focusing on what you want from life.

So often we have great thoughts and ideas of what we want to accomplish but we may procrastinate and put it off and before you know it, a whole year has passed us by without us making a step towards our goal.

In business, times get tough and the only thing that will drive you through these hard times is passion.

If you don’t believe in yourself, you can’t expect others to. Have confidence in yourself and your dreams and understand that they are achievable if you put your mind to it. Linking families

together

F

amily Link carers look after children with disabilities, generally in the carer’s home, on a regular basis at weekends, during the day or overnight. We meet two Southwark families to find out how they benefit from providing or receiving the help a short break can give.

Alima “ My son Karim is eight, he has Jouberts Syndrome.

It’s a neurological condition meaning he has mobility and learning difficulties. He uses a wheelchair to get around and is just beginning to walk with a frame. He was tube fed until two months ago.

Karim doesn’t use words to communicate, but is beginning to. He uses sounds and actions such as pointing and smiling to make his wishes known.

He can understand Bengali and English.

I don’t have any family here, and it can be very difficult for me to look after Karim, especially as he gets older and bigger.

I heard about Family Link from a friend who was using the service and they recommended it.

Karim lives with me and has short breaks with Jane and Henry, normally once a fortnight for a day. He has been going for two years now. The best thing about Family Link is that Karim gets to see new places, which he loves.

I know Karim is very happy when he is with Jane and Henry. I trust them and it gives me time to spend with my younger child.

Karim is making good progress; I do worry how I will cope as he gets older, but we work together, and as he communicates more he is less frustrated. Family Link has really made a difference to Karim and the whole family.”

Henry and Jane “ Karim is the first child we’ve looked after through Family Link. We fostered many years ago for Southwark, and had experience of fostering children with a disability.

When our children grew up and left home we thought it would fit in with our life, as we both work. We’ve enjoyed the training we’ve been given.

Karim can be lively and likes to chat to people. We love working with him – he’s so engaging. He communicates but can’t always express how he feels.

We’ve also really liked getting to know Alima and her family. We often chat to each other to agree how best to meet Karim’s needs.

We’re learning together how best to support him.

We have been to the Olympic Park, Digger World, Southbank, and a disability festival at the Royal Festival Hall. Karim had a go at wheelchair basketball, which he loved.

We have grown up children who both get on well with Karim and he really looks up to our son. We have friends and family who have children his age, so it’s great for them all to get to know each other.

You need patience and for your family to be on board with the scheme, as they will be part of it. We like how Family Link is helping parents to make things work, rather than picking up the pieces when things go wrong. Family Link is a great scheme; it’s very rewarding and great fun.”

New council homes in SE1 There is a huge demand for more housing across London. Currently we have a long waiting list of people asking for council housing, and it is estimated that the local population is set to grow by 50,000 in the next 15 years

hat’s why we’re building 11,000 new council homes by 2043. With the first 1,500 to be delivered by 2018, it’s the most ambitious building plan in the UK and we are determined to lead the way in London and in the UK. 21 families will be getting the keys to their new homes at Willow Walk in just a few weeks.

As well as Willow Walk, we have eight other sites where homes are being built:

Willow Walk The Willow Walk site comprises 75 council homes in two blocks of accommodation. One will provide 21 general needs flats for council rent to house people from our waiting list; the other is 54 short stay accommodation units. Building started in late 2013 and will be ready any day now.

This spring Extraordinary Bodies, the UK’s only circus company to feature disabled and non-disabled performers, will be working with our communities. Their show Weighting will premiere in Dulwich Park on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 May, as part of Dulwich Festival.

Weighting is a spectacular, large scale outdoor circus show with a full band, an original soundtrack and backed by a local community choir. The show celebrates risk, as our characters go on a wild, riotous journey of selfdiscovery; do we stay in our comfort zones, or follow our dreams and leap into the unknown?

Not a traditional circus show! This is a joyous theatrical event. Much of the action takes place on a flying staircase, and is set against the stunning backdrop of Dulwich Park. The story is all about risk, freedom and community, acted out by performers soaring through the air, playing instruments and bringing together a unique set of bodies, skills and images.

groups. The most obvious opportunity is the community choir which will be integrated into the show, performing in front of over 3,000 people. The choir should reflect the community of Southwark, so we are looking to spread our net as wide as possible – to established choirs, individuals and groups. We are particularly keen to find deaf and disabled groups and individuals interested in taking part in circus or performing arts training and workshops, with the idea of establishing lasting groups and networks.

How did you get into performing?

Completely by chance! As a disabled young person, the arts were never on my radar. After leaving university I became a youth worker. Out of the blue, the BBC rang me looking for a disabled actor for the film ‘Skalligrigg’ and invited me to a meeting. There were very few disabled actors around in the early 1990s. I bluffed and blustered my way through the meeting, and to my amazement was offered a role. The next month, I was acting opposite my hero Ian Dury. Then I started working with Graeae Theatre Company, a group of disabled performers and activists and the rest is history.

How do projects like this benefit communities?

In our experience, bringing together different and often disparate people in these ways can be joyous and transformative. We live in difficult times, and for many, there is a feeling of increasing embattlement and alienation. It was all so new to me, but you don’t know how you’ll be when you’re older, and being able to do things for yourself like food shopping, booking a doctor’s appointment, or reporting a repair for your house will give you so much more independence. I didn’t know what I was missing out on before.

I think it’s marvellous, I get emails from my friend in Somerset – she sent me pictures of her daughter in her wedding dress which was lovely to see.

At the group I’ve been assigned to some lovely, patient students who teach me at their school once a week and I tell them what I’d like to learn. I was really nervous at first, my hands were shaking and I didn’t want to go back again, but I’m so glad I carried on.

My advice to people like me is to take small steps, if you learn how to do one thing it’s worth it. It’s really opened my world and I’m so glad I did it.”

hen it comes to gardening, Southwark might be right in the middle of London but there’s a lot going on. 25 per cent of the borough is green and there are hundreds of growing projects to get involved in, from allotments and community gardens to park digs and conservation activities.

Throughout the year, growing projects are looking for volunteers to give a helping hand to tidy, tend, dig or harvest. It’s a great way to get some fresh air, learn new skills, exercise and meet local people.

Transforming Southwark A look at the latest on the regeneration projects taking place across Southwark

outhwark is one of the most exciting boroughs in London when it comes to regeneration, with several major projects either established or in development to bring thousands of new homes, including affordable homes and 11,000 new council homes, to the borough. And don’t forget the new shops and offices, job opportunities, safer roads and better transport (such as our campaign to get the Bakerloo line extended into Camberwell and the Old Kent Road), new leisure facilities and new green and open spaces, including inner London’s first new park in 70 years at Elephant and Castle.

Camberwell The new Camberwell Library, set in a landscaped plaza, is due to open this summer. Visitors to this exciting community hub will be able to check out hundreds of books, films and music, browse the web, or get involved in a full range of activities and events like film clubs, cultural events and author reading sessions. A new market square and children’s play area is due to open in summer 2016, transforming Camberwell Green into an exciting family friendly open space and improvements at Burgess Park will make the open space more accessible.

Peckham We’ve just announced that Landholt+Brown have been appointed as architects to work closely with residents and local businesses on innovative design ideas for a new square in front of Peckham Rye Station, and a planning application will be submitted in the summer.

The council is also reviewing options for Peckham Square and adjoining buildings on Peckham High Street and taking forward sites for development in the context of the recently agreed planning framework. On the homes front, Notting Hill Housing Association has started construction work at the old Wooddene site, which is being turned into over 300 new homes, due to be completed by 2017.

The Mobile Youth Bus will be out and about in the afternoon during the Easter holidays, packed with arts and crafts, sports equipment and Xbox games.

Activities include sports, tshirt printing, circus skills, phone case art, team games and challenges, jewellery making and an Xbox Fifa tournament.

Fix it at home We’re on a mission to make DIY heroes out of the people of Southwark

here are a lot of repairs around your home that are easy to fix yourself but only if you know how. This is where our Fix it at Home videos come in. They may not cover the most glamorous subjects but these videos will transform you from a DIY novice to a Fix it at Home hero in a matter of minutes. Blocked sinks and toilets will be nothing.

Based on our own expert plumbers’ and electricians’ recommendations, here are a few of the top tips from the videos.

Discover the power of the mop Who knew that to unblock a toilet you only need a mop and two bin bags?

Place the mop in bag one and holding the bag as high as possible, plunge to the U bend a few times. Take out the mop and bag and place into bag two (and dispose of bags).

Flush and hey presto, you should be back in business.

Let your hardware shop do the hard work for you Not sure how to change your fluorescent kitchen lights or your 2D bathroom light fitting? Take your old ones along to your local hardware shop so they can find you the right size and voltage. Most shops will also have a waste disposal facility so you can dispose of them safely and easily.

Check your thermostat It sounds obvious but if your house is cold it may be as simple as your thermostat having been knocked.

18 to 21 degrees is the optimum temperature range and will stop you overheating your house and your heating bills going through the roof.
