This practical course provides an underpinning knowledge of the issues in childcare and the responsibilities of carers towards children. It is aimed at those seeking to continue studying this field at university or those who wish to start a career in a childcare environment at practitioner level. Work placement is a mandatory element of the course.

Content This course, which can also be studied with ESOL Entry Level 3, offers an introduction into the basic principles and practices of Health, Social and Child Care. It is a practical and vocational course which provides you with an excellent idea of what it is like to work in a childcare setting and an introduction to the skills that you will need to succeed.

Content: This course includes: Communication skills with children, Valuing children as individuals, Planning for the physical and emotional care needs of children, Keeping children safe, Creative activities for young children.

This course includes: Relationships for children's care learning and development, Promoting children's development, Developing practice for children aged 0-8, Safeguarding children, Promoting children's rights, Children's learning activities and play.

Entry criteria: A minimum of 4 GCSEs at grades C or above, including English, or Children’s Care Learning & Development BTEC Level 2 Diploma with a merit grade. A police check will be carried out to assess your suitability to work with children during your work experience.

Next step: Entry criteria: A minimum of 3 GCSEs grade E or above, or Childcare/Health and Social Care Entry Certificate. A police check will be carried out to assess your suitability to work with children during your work experience.

A degree or foundation degree in Childhood Studies, Social Work or employment in the child or social care sector.
