Money matters Our Customer Service Advisors can help you to access financial support. New Bursary Fund and Educational Maintenance Allowance (EMA) There is now a new bursary fund for 16-18 year old students on low income. Existing EMA students may be entitled to some continued payments. You will have to maintain an excellent level of attendance and behaviour and hand work in on time. Please ask Customer Services for more information. Help with childcare costs Southwark College provides two nurseries with subsidised childcare places for learners. Depending on your circumstances, your child could be eligible for a free nursery place. However, all learners are required to pay a small termly registration fee regardless of their income. Please talk to one of our Customer Service Team to find out more. Other financial support You could also be eligible for 30% discount on travel in London if you study for more than 14 hours per week. All learners are able to join the Student Union. Your Student Union card will give you a range of discounts in local/national shops and restaurants. Facilities and Services Southwark College has over 600 computers for you to use to support your studies. Our Learning and Development Centres have a wide selection of books, newspapers, journals, magazines, DVDs and on-line resources to help your studies. Our experienced staff are always on hand to help you to find what you need. You are also welcome to make good use of our hair and beauty salon and our gym facilities. You will also find opportunities to get involved in a range of sports such as football and basketball.

Child Care The College runs a nursery service for children aged 1 – 5 years old. Our childcare practitioners are fully qualified and take pride in looking after your child in a safe, friendly and stimulating learning environment. Our nurseries have both been graded as “Good” by Ofsted Early Years inspectors. Depending on your circumstances your child may be eligible for a free nursery place. Social Life Our newly refurbished common rooms are ideal places to chill out, relax, make new friends and take a break from your studies. Whether you want to practice your table football, surf the net on our Apple Macs or just talk to friends, the new common rooms are great places to hang out.

Canteens and Cafés We have canteens at all of our College sites that offer a range of hot and cold food, including healthy options. At Bermondsey you can even try the catering restaurant, Hardings, if you feel like treating yourself! We also have a bistro-style café at Waterloo.

Fee information If you are 16 – 18 and have home student status then you will not have to pay course fees to study on any of our full-time programmes. Please note, though, that you may have to pay a materials fee for some courses. Students aged 19 and over will have to pay a registration and exam fee but depending on your circumstances we may be able to pay your course fees for you. If you are in receipt of the following benefits, we may be able to help: • Jobseekers Allowance As there are some exceptions, you are advised to check with our Advisors when you apply. You must provide original and current evidence of the benefit you are receiving when you enrol. Please speak to a member of our Customer Service Team if you need more information. You can apply on-line via our website at www.southwark.ac.uk/courses or by completing an application form and posting it to us, or by dropping into one of our campuses at Bermondsey, Camberwell or Waterloo. Full address details and a map can be found at the back of this guide.

For courses starting in September 2012 apply now. There are also later start courses in November and January 2013. Further information about course vacancies can be found on the website, www.southwark.ac.uk, or by calling our Customer Information line on 0207 815 1600. Southwark College will make every effort to ensure that the courses outlined in this prospectus will be offered in 2012/13, however we reserve the right to change or cancel courses if required.

What happens after we have received your application? We will confirm that we have received your application and will then invite you in to the College to view our facilities and to talk to a member of our lecturing staff. If it is a while since you have studied or if you don’t exactly meet the entry requirements for the course, then please do still apply. We can arrange for you to take a short assessment before your interview so that the course tutor will be able to help you to decide if the course is right for you. If your interview is successful then you will be made a conditional or unconditional offer. Your offer letter will explain if there are any conditions that you will need to meet. Usually this will involve successfully completing the course that you are currently studying. Once you have received an offer of a place you will be invited to enrol over the summer. Please note that your place on the course is not guaranteed until you have enrolled, even if you have received an unconditional offer, so please come to enrol as soon as you are able to.

Working with Employers Southwark College has a long history of working successfully with employers. We can provide vocational training and qualifications in the work place or on our premises and can design bespoke qualifications to suit your industry.

Earn While You Learn If you are in employment and interested in gaining further qualifications, then you could benefit from our extensive range of work-based learning programmes. We offer a wide range of courses that will allow you to achieve recognition and qualifications for the work you already do. Our experienced lecturers and assessors will visit you in the workplace to discuss the most appropriate qualification for you. And what’s more, for most courses, the assessment will also take place in the work place and will be based on the work you carry out on a day to day basis. Access and Teaching

Do you want to go to University? Have you been out of education for some time? Then we can help! Our Access to Higher Education courses will prepare you for entry to University. These courses focus particularly on supporting you to develop the study skills and independent learning techniques that you will need to succeed at University. Our experienced lecturers will work closely with you to ensure that you receive all the support you need. If you do not have qualifications such as A Levels or a National Diploma that are traditionally required for University, or if it is some time since you studied for a qualification, then an Access course will provide you with the confidence and skills you need to achieve your potential.

Preparing to teach in the life long learning sector (PTLLS) Level 3 Part time: 1 Evening per week

Certificate in teaching in the life long learning sector (CTLLS) Level 3 Part time: 2 Evenings per week

Group: All Learners Campus: Waterloo Start Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 10 Weeks This is the first step towards gaining qualified teacher status. Successful students may continue on to our CTLLS course and eventually the DTLLS course, which would ideally incorporate their subject specialism. No previous teaching experience is required. Content: This course is an introduction to teaching practice incorporating theory and practice of teaching, principles of learning, your professional role and responsibilities, confidence, communication and interpersonal skills. Students will be expected to complete a number of written assignments as well as undergo a formal teaching observation as part of this course. Ideally you should have decided on the subject you would like to teach in the future and already possess or be working towards a qualification in that subject. Entry criteria: You will need to show you have reached Level 2 in English and Maths, and to attend an interview with a college tutor. Next step: CTLLS course and qualified Associate Teacher, Learning & Skills status (ATLS).

Group: All Learners Campus: Waterloo Start Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 20 Weeks This course follows on from PTLLS and looks at the areas covered in the PTLLS course in greater depth. Acquiring this qualification also qualifies you for Associate Teacher, Learning & skills status (ATLS) and is your licence to teach on courses with pre designed curricula. You will need access to 30 hrs of teaching practice in an institution type recognised by the examining body. Content: This course explores in depth the subjects of teaching practice incorporating theory and practice of teaching, principles of learning, your professional role and responsibilities, confidence, communication and interpersonal skills. Students will be expected to complete a number of written assignments as well as undergo a formal teaching observation as part of this course. Teaching observations are extended to 30 hours. Entry criteria: You must show that you have a genuine interest in the chosen subjects and be able to produce basic written records and estimates. This means that no previous qualifications or experience are necessary, but you will need to pass the college English assessment at Entry Level 2 (or hold the equivalent), or pass an interview with a College lecturer. Next step: A full level one qualification in general Construction or in a specialist area.

This course meets the needs of those wishing to work or already working in a role supporting the teaching and learning of pupils. The qualification will confirm competence in the role to standards required by the Teacher Development Agency.

You have English and Maths skills at Level 1, your ambition is to study for a degree, and are not quite ready to take on an Access course yet. This course will give you a thorough grounding in the skills you need to be successful at Level 3 and beyond.

Content: Nine mandatory units two optional units relating to supporting learners and their learning. For example Child and Young Person Development, Safeguarding, Communication with children, young people and adults. Entry criteria: You will need literacy and numeracy skills to be able to complete the qualification successfully. You will need a paid or voluntary placement in a school. Next step: Higher level qualifications in the field of education.

Content: Students will improve their literacy, numeracy and ICT skills as well as increasing their general study skills to a standard where they are ready to progress to Level Three qualifications. The topics you study will cover topics that reflect the programmes learners wish to progress to in the future. Entry criteria: No previous qualifications or experience are necessary, but you will need to show you have Maths and English skills at Level 1 through college assessment, to have an interview with a college lecturer and to demonstrate commitment and dedication to the course.

Access to Law Level 3 Group: 19+ Campus: Waterloo Start Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 1 Year This intensive one year course provides you with the opportunity to learn about the key aspects of Law and is aimed at those individuals who wish to progress to University to study law-related courses. You will have the chance to improve your study skills, including your written English and research techniques, in order to gain the confidence and experience you need to successfully apply to University. Content: This course includes: Introduction to the English Legal System, Criminal Law, Contract Law, Study Skills. Entry criteria: You must show that you have the potential to achieve A-C grades in GCSEs from your past results, record of achievement, or from a written assessment. This means that no previous qualifications or experience are necessary, but you will need to pass the college Maths and English assesment at Level 2, pass an interview with a College lecturer and demonstrate commitment and dedication to your subject. Next step: A degree or foundation degree in Law, Humanities, Social Science, Business or another related degree.

This intensive one year course provides you with the opportunity to learn about the social work sector and a career as a social worker, in particular. You will have the chance to improve your study skills, including your written English and research techniques, in order to gain the confidence and experience you need to successfully apply to University.

Content: The course covers a broad spectrum of subjects including: Sociology (including health, equality and family), Psychology (including research methods), Social Work (including values, ethics and the work place), Law and Practice, English, IT and Study Skills. Careers advice and tutorials are available and included. Additional maths or English support is available if required.

Entry criteria: You must pass the college Maths and English assessment at Level 2 grade. You must also attend an interview with a College tutor. Students with a preAccess qualification will need to show achievement at Level 2. Students should demonstrate maturity and an interest in and aptitude for Social Work, to include some experience of working in Social Work e.g. on a work placement. You must be at least 19 years old.

Next step: A university degree in Social Work or related course in Social Sciences. The college has special progression links with Goldsmiths, University of London and Greenwich University.

This intensive one year course provides you with an introduction to the key issues and concepts in this field in the UK today. You will have the chance to improve your study skills, including your written English, Maths and research techniques, in order to gain the confidence and experience you need to successfully apply to University. Content: The programme will include study of and assignments on topics relevant to the area such as Social Stratification and Inequalities, Sociology of the Family, Urban Regeneration, Race in British Society, the History of Social Policy and Psychological Perspectives and Pro and Anti Social Behaviour. You will also have weekly tutorial and set targets on your individual learning plan with your personal tutor. Entry criteria: No previous are necessary, but you will need to pass the College Maths and English assessment at Level 2, have an interview with a college lecturer and demonstrate commitment and dedication to the subject. You also need to have some evidence of experience in this field, and to continue getting experience in this area while you are on the course if you want to get onto a degree programme in Youth, Community or Social Work. Next step: A degree or foundation degree in Youth & Community Work or other related degree courses, such as Social Work Sociology/Social Policy Criminology or Psychology.

This course has been designed to provide new opportunities for adults looking to return to education and pursue a degree or higher national diploma in nursing. It is awarded by the Open College Network. This intensive one year course provides you with the opportunity to learn about the health care sector and nursing in particular. You will have the chance to improve your study skills, including your written English and research techniques, in order to gain the confidence and experience you need to successfully apply to University. Content: This course includes: Health and Culture, Anatomy and Physiology, Nursing Studies, Science and Counselling Skills as well as English, Maths and IT. The course is taught through lectures, seminars, group discussions, laboratory demonstrations, group and independent presentations. Entry criteria: You must pass the college Maths and English assessment at Level 2 grade. You must also attend an interview with a College tutor. Students with a preAccess qualification will need to show achievement at Level 2. The desire and aptitude to enter Nursing as a career is essential and Nursing practical experience would be useful. This course is for students aged 19 and over. Next step: A degree or foundation degree in nursing or further study on another health-related course.

This intensive one year course provides you with an introduction to the skills you will need to study to become a teacher. You will have the chance to improve your study skills, including your written English and research techniques, in order to gain the confidence and experience you need to successfully apply to University. It is awarded by the Open College Network. Content: The course covers: English, Maths, Science (GCSE level), Teaching Studies, Introduction to IT, History, Literature and Study Skills. Students will spend two weeks in primary schools on placement. Careers advice and tutorial support are also available. This course is conducted through lectures, group work, individual work, seminars, outside visits, teaching placements, oral presentations, assignments, independent and guided study. Mathematics GCSE is an intensive resit course, completed in one year. It can be taken by 16-18 year old students as well as mature students. Please note that it is not a beginners' course - you must have the knowledge and understanding to cope with GCSE level Maths and students should have a grade D. Classes are taught in the day, normally alongside a Level 3 vocational programme. Mathematics is also available in the evening for part time students. All courses take place at the Waterloo Centre and start in September.

Content: Mathematical skills are important to us all, and through the GCSE programme you will develop the skills by learning algebra, geometry, trigonometry and statistics, as required by the syllabus. You will learn through formal teaching and individual work on problems and exercises.

Entry criteria: If you are 16-18 years old you must show the potential to achieve A-C grades in GCSEs from your past results, record of achievement, or a written assessment. This means you will have achieved at least a grade D in GCSE maths. Mature students must show potential, motivation and commitment, and may be advised to start with a Basic Numeracy or preGCSE course. You should complete the College application form and attend an interview.

Content: The course consists of 2 mandatory units: Fitness testing and Practical Sport plus 6 optional units including: Planning and running a Sports event, Effects of exercise on the body systems, the Sports Industry, Practical Sport. You will also study one functional skills or retake your GCSE maths or English if you have a Grade D. Entry criteria: You need 4 GCSE passes at Grade D or above. Group: All Learners Campus: Bermondsey Start Date: Sep 2012 Duration: 2 Year The BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport and Exercise Sciences will give learners an in-depth understanding of the Sport and Active Leisure sector, whilst also developing the essential skills required for employment, career progression, or progression to further qualifications and training. Vocational Courses for 14–16 year olds

If you are 16 – 18 and have home student status then you will not have to pay course fees to study on any of our full-time programmes. Please note, though, that you may have to pay a materials fee for some courses. Why study at Southwark College? If you choose to join Southwark College you will be able to gain qualifications that may not be available to you at school. You may want to follow a particular career path and use this as the first rung on the ladder, or you might just want to study something new that interests you. As you will see, there are a range of courses to suit all interests and abilities. All courses lead to nationally recognised qualifications and generate GCSE points when you achieve the qualification. The courses are available during the week as link courses with your school and you will need to be committed to the course for one year. You must have the agreement of your school before applying.
