SOME LIKE IT HOT It’s getting HOT in Peckham. London’s first ever hot sauce festival is coming to Copeland Park this April, with free entry all day. The Hot Sauce Society festival brings together more than 30 independent hot sauce maker s from the UK and abroad to sell their range of hot sauces, chutneys and chilli jams. The day-long festival will also include a range spicy games and workshops for all ages, with food, alcohol and gift stalls. Hot sauce beer pong and DJ sets with ‘party bangers and disco floor fillers’ are also promised for adult guests. The Hot Sauce Festival runs from 11am-11pm on April 13. Stand-up and podcaster Marc Maron returns to the UK with a new live show of his trademark raw, honest and thought-provoking comedy. For over thirty years, Marc Maron has been writing and performing comedy for print, stage, radio, online and television. He is best known for his hit podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, his current role in the hit Netflix original series GLOW and his critically acclaimed halfhour scripted television series Maron also on Netflix. Saturday 6 April at 7.30pm, Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall.

athryn Barnes is Bermondsey’s answer to Cheryl Strayed after penning her tales of hiking the Pacific Crest Trail on America’s west coast, writes Laura Burgoine...

The debut author, who grew up in the East End and now lives in Bermondsey, embarked on the adventure in 2016 where she hiked a gruelling 935 miles over 10 weeks, climbing 166,000 feet through Oregon and Washington, despite having no camping or walking experience. Blogging along the way, she turned her adventure into the book The Unlikeliest Backpacker.

“I wouldn’t call myself a blogger,” Kathryn said. “I created a blog just for my family to keep them updated.

My family were apprehensive about the trip. My Mum was really petrified. It was such an out there thing for us to do.”

Before reading Cheryl Strayed’s 2012 memoir Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail, Katherine had never heard of the PCT, which runs from the border of Mexico and California to the border of Washington and Canada. “I read Wild a couple of years before the film came out. I’d just finished reading Eat Pray Love and had a

lust for adventure,” she said.

“I was 31. I’d been married just over a year. I didn’t know if I wanted a family. I wasn’t ready to buy a house and go to the suburbs. I was a fish out of water working at the bank and so I started reading these books, these inspirational adventures, and it made me find out more about the trail. I felt compelled to do something.”

When Kathryn and her husband Conrad returned to England in October 2016 she found herself at a bit of a loss. “I found myself sitting in front of the computer for hours looking at the photographs. It gave me this compulsion that I had to write down the experience,” she said. “I got home and had time to reflect. Having stepped away from the trail, I realised what an impact it had on me.”

The hike had a bittersweet ending, as in the final week Kathryn started to appreciate it. “At the time you’re so caught up in the hardship and physicality but the trail is stunning, America, for all its faults, has such an expansive landscape. Before this I had no appreciation for wilderness and space and how remote it is.

And how dangerous it can be.”

She describes the experience as a “whole other level of vulnerability.”

“I’ve been wrapped up in cotton

wool my whole life, growing up in London. There’s things you take for granted here. Running out of water was my biggest fear,” she said.

While Cheryl Strayed hiked on her own, Kathryn shared the experience with her husband. “We were definitely tested,” she said. “It’s a very steep learning curve for any relationship. If anybody is starting a new relationship, you can expedite the dating process! You see each other at your worst. There’s lot of tension. You have an argument and carry on walking but your brain is just ruminating on every word,” she continued. “It’s really against my nature but you have to learn to let things go. I had to learn to be more forgiving. It’s very character building.

I do think I’m a little bit more chilled these days.”

The experience changed Kathryn and Conrad’s whole perspective; Katheryn is pregnant now and the couple is aiming to move out of London, embark on more travel and potentially start their own business.

“I’ve learnt that working in an office is against our nature and not necessarily healthy for our mental state,” Kathryn said. “I find this about London; it’s quite jarring.”

Now, safely back home, the wild adventure isn’t just a memory.

“I’m always trying to recapture the escapism of the PCT,” the author said. “It’s hard to get that in England. We could go for days without seeing anyone on the PCT.” During their trek, Kathryn and Conrad didn’t encounter any bears but saw lots of prints and met people who had

seen them. “I was always very much following a tactic a ranger told me: to make noise and talk. Brown bears are quite skittish. We saw a lot of snakes, they would slither out of the way,” Kathryn said.

The trail is still perilous though. “It’s easy to get lost with visibility. The water crossings can be dangerous; there’s not always a bridge and there’s deceptively strong currents.”

“It gives you an appreciation for nature. It’s not something to trifle with.”

Mark is 54, the NHS is 70, and the UK national average life expectancy is 84. If Mark makes it to 84, the NHS will be 100. What will they both look like?

elgian director of the moment, Ivo van Hove, brings his wizardry to the stage once again with this production of a cinematic classic All About Eve, writes Rosie O’Connell…

Van Hove’s adaptation is so high concept and contemporary that, as a result of some very delicate alterations, retains the wit and charm of the 1950s original movie script.

It is no secret that Gillian Anderson generates a bit of a fan frenzy due to a stellar career that reaches back to The X Files and up to new Netflix comedy Sex Education, and my goodness she did not disappoint. Her casting as Margo Channing is inspired as she brings distinction and grandeur to the seasoned, steely character with ease. She slinks about the stage in silks and satins with such a defiant, enticing grace that, despite not quite being a match for Bette Davis’ quick wit and smart mouth, she brings a fragile vulnerability and consternation to Margo that is just electric to watch.

Lily James exudes all of the faux naivety and duplicity necessary for Eve Harrington’s deception of Margo Channing. James starts out as a wide eyed fledgling, full of sweetness and enthusiasm, desperately following her idol’s every word and move, a role audiences will be used to seeing her portray from parts in the second Mamma Mia film and Cinderella. She is, however, equally as convincing when the artfully manipulative and ambitious side of her character is revealed toward the second half of the performance.

In Jonathan Church’s revival, the two brothers, Victor and Walter, one a New York cop nearing retirement, the other a successful surgeon, meet for the first time in sixteen years to sell their family furniture stored in the attic of a condemned New York brownstone. Overseeing the psychological battlefield is the wily veteran appraiser, Gregory Solomon, and Sara Stewart as Esther Franz, Victor’s wife.

around while waiting for furniture dealer Solomon to arrive. Esther comes up and they soon talk of how their wasted lives have all been connected to this place and the dead man - Victor’s father - who once lived there.

They pull apart their marriage and their characters until the dealer turns up to make an offer for everything: the furniture, their memories, their lives, and their integrity.

It is in this first half that Miller shows he can do comedy.

Suchet’s hamming up of the Jewish dealer almost has Coyle’s cop corpsing more than once and the audience loved it. They are very obviously enjoying these roles and are having a good time on stage.

As they dance around each other Victor wants a price while Solomon wants to talk about everything else other than a

price while hinting at how used furniture is not worth so much…

When they finally agree on a figure, Walter, the estranged and wealthy brother turns up out of the blue to close Act One. After the interval the siblings hack away at their relationship, peeling back revelation after revelation after mind-blowing revelation turning both of their pasts into lies as they alternately try to crush one another with three decades of secrets. It almost became a revelation too far and this wordy, shouty second act sometimes became too confusing to keep up. The message was clear, though: the price of making the mistake of keeping family secrets was losing a brother.

from Monica Dolan, as Margo’s confidant, providing a wry narrative throughout and Stanley Townsend’s turn as slick theatre critic Addison DeWitt, the production as a whole comes together to create a beguiling interpretation. However, in spite of all the set and camera trickery and impressive performances from all involved, it cannot detract

from the fact that it is really all about Gillian.

A fish feast just Next Door

f you’ve been to Moxon’s the East Dulwich fishmongers of some repute, then your next stop is Next Door, the fish restaurant next door where their knowledge of fish and seafood is combined to bring the freshest produce from the sea to your table, writes Michael Holland.

Moxons Next Door Sweet Potato Gnocchi, a good twist on the Italian staple that came with capers, sage, spinach and oyster sauce, and which was quickly followed by Grilled Rye King Scallops with Chilli in Seaweed Butter. The scallops were absolutely divine, so I was tempted to lift the shell to my lips to lap up the juices,

but the lovely bread we had was ideal for mopping up, and saved me from a clip round the ear for bad table manners…

Conversation had almost come to a halt by now as we indulged ourselves in all this fantastic fish.

There was the occasional slurp and lip-smacking, and a ‘Hmmm,’

I was having dinner with my mum, who I know likes a good bit of fish, and who I knew would love Next Door.

The restaurant is bijou, packed with tiny tables that are largely incapable of containing too many of the small plate offerings most people desire, and the spaces between these tables are for the size zero to slim.

Luckily our server fitted nicely as she flitted about fetching water and talking us through the day’s specials.

She recommended 5 small plates as a good average between two, so we set about choosing that number from an excellent menu. From the wine list I chose a Tokaji, a really nice, dry Hungarian delight that went well with all the fish dishes, but could not cope with the sweetness of the desserts towards the end, which is no fault of the wine. Plus, the sommelier gave me a timely reminder of my mispronunciation by praising me for my excellent choice of Tokaji, while not pronouncing the silent J. Nicely done, Sir. The first of our selection to arrive was Pickled Herring, and old favourite of Mum’s and not half as vinegary as what we used to buy in the Jewish delis of old. This classic was updated with additions of smoked roe, celeriac and a dill and mustard sauce that transported the fish from 1970s Whitechapel to 21st century East Dulwich.

between mouthfuls, and a ‘Awww, ain’t those scallops good?’ But in the main we worked our way quietly through an ocean of epicurean heaven.

Mum had seen a TV chef cooking monkfish in the week so we had Next Door’s version which was better than anything ITV ever cooked up, and then my Green Salad finally arrived! I wasn’t sure if this had been forgotten or they were merely waiting for some space to appear on our table. Even so, it was something I’d wanted to enjoy as a side with all the dishes and not alone near the end.

Finally our Cornish Crab Risotto, Sorrel, Tomato and Parmesan came. You could really taste the sea in this bowl of rich rice, and as nice as it was we could not finish something so opulent at the end of the meal, although if it had been served earlier I’m sure it would’ve been devoured with vigour.

To finish, Mum had the Lemon Tart and I the Rhubarb Possett, and they seemed to be the perfect end to a great meal.

The beauty of Next Door is that the fish is simply cooked but the ingredients and work that goes in to what accompanies that fish makes it a very special place. Next Door is a must for all fish fanciers; definitely one for Rotherhithe foodies Lee and Torsten to try if they’ve not been before…
