Follow the breadcrumbs to the Horniman museum this Halloween for a Hansel and Gretel storytelling session. Sandal Sticks Theatre are using songs and puppetry to bring the Grimm’s fairy-tale classic to life as Hansel and Gretel venture through the deep, dark forest on their treacherous travels. Suitable for families with children ages 3+. Tickets: Adult £1, Child £5.

Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 October at 11am, 12pm, 1pm, 2:30pm and 3:30pm.

On the same weekend there’s also a Halloween Fair where you can meet creepy crawlies up close in the Wild Fangs cave, and browse for gifts and treats at the arts and crafts markets and food stalls. London’s only meadmaker, Gosnells, has launched a gently sparkling mead. Dubbed Peckham’s answer to Prosecco, Gosnells new bottle retails at £10-£12, and is made from orange blossom honey and water. WINE TIME The Wine Parlour in Brixton is celebrating five years since it first opened with an activity packed wine festival on Saturday 6 October. Since it was opened by founder Chix Chandaria in September 2013, the Wine Parlour has expanded from selections of wine from France, Italy and Germany to now stocks wines from small, often family-owned vineyards in Austria, Greece, Portugal and Spain. “Walworth Road is still my base,” Andrew said. The Oxford born artist moved to London in 1970 and opened a studio in Butler’s Wharf, which filmmaker Derek Jarman famously documented during his early career. “We were in the glass house under the Shard in Bermondsey. Norman Ackroyd was there. When we were there, there were murders every other week. Now 26 years later it’s all changed.”

In 1991, Andrew opened the purpose-built Andrew Logan Museum of Sculpture at Berriew, in the Welsh Marches, where he lives when he’s not at his home on the Walworth Road. The museum now houses most of the artist’s sculptures and paintings.

“I used to visit Berriew in the 1970s. I had friends who were friends with Julie Christie. Back then it took a day to get here,” Andrew said.

“People come to visit the museum from all over the world.

We live by the river, and there’s more sheep than people here.

In the morning I have breakfast on the terrace and you see Kingfishers and ducks. It’s very quiet.”

Now Andrew and his partner Michael Davis have opened up a bespoke hotel in the area.

“We’ve done it out in our colours,” Andrew said.

Somewhere between all this, the artist has found time to put on a pageant. This is the 14th Alternative Miss World, and it continues to attract a host of luminaries from the worlds of fashion, film, theatre, music and art.

This year’s judges are still to be announced but past panel members included Zoe Wanamaker CBE, Fenella Fielding OBE, Dame Zandra Rhodes, and Suggs. David Hockney, Brian Eno, David Bailey, and Billy Connolly have also judged past competitions, with the late Derek Jarman crowned an early winner of the contest in 1975.

ollowing a sell-out show in 2014, Andrew Logan’s Alternative Miss World returns to Shakespeare’s Globe.

Actress Sara Kestelman is co-hosting with the artist and sculptor, who founded the now legendary pageant in 1972. Andrew talks to the Weekender about psychedelic peace, Wales, and Walworth Road, writes Laura Burgoine...

World is a co-production with the Globe. “The first time we did it, in 2014, it had everything that I think Shakespeare himself would have loved,” Andrew said.

“The day after, they asked if we wanted to return. It’s an enormous thing, we make all the prizes. I make the alternative crown jewels. You run out of energy; I couldn’t do it every year.”

“It’s a ridiculous thing commercially. It takes six months to prepare, and then it’s over in one night,” he added.

The theme for this year’s pageant is psychedelic peace, celebrating peace and love for humanity.

Contestants from across the globe will participate in traditional daywear, swimwear and eveningwear rounds, as well as a personality interview.

This competition, however, focuses not on beauty but transformation, creativity, equality and championing the inherently unique.

“All the regalia and crowns are housed in the museum in Wales,” Andrew said.

“The world is the way it always has been. I thought I have to do peace as the theme,” Andrew said.

Andrew is excited to co-host with Sara Kestelman, whom he first saw playing Titania in a 1970 production of Midsummer Night’s Dream.

“Sara is my old friend. She’s a great Shakespearean actress,” he said. “I know I live in the age of celebrity but I’m interested in people with heart and meaning.

My great friend Zandra Rhodes has always been involved. It all happens very organically. I guide the team but I don’t direct, I give them freedom to create.”

The whole thing is about teamwork. “It started with my brother Richard doing the staging, my brother Peter doing music, my sister Janet entered. It was a family event then my friends came in and it’s still like that.”

Martin Green is DJ-ing. “I never know the people who are entering. It’s really wonderful to have a surprise when I come out on stage,” Andrew said.

“Shakespeare’s Globe, wherever you are, you feel so in contact with the stage. It’s a joy really.”

tranger than Paradise is all hyped up for a Halloween special at the Hootananny with headliner Freak Fandango, a Barcelona-based Balkan band performing songs from their new album Lost Songs of Fake Unicorns, writes Laura Burgoine...

Over the past decade they made their name as solo artists and wowed audiences all over Europe and Russia; together they are simply electric. This is a live DJ extravaganza that has to be seen to be believed.

A play on home ground

N

ancy Sullivan was born in Rotherhithe at a time when the old docks were still a wasteland, when the only docklands development was Surrey Docks Farm and coffee was instant and from a jar. The only constant from those times is the domestic violence that is still one of the major killers of women, writes Michael Holland...

Abi Zakarian’s Fabric gives voice to one woman’s experience of sexual violence and trauma, and through Nancy Sullivan in the role of Leah Cavendish we bear witness to how domestic abuse permeates everyday life, and how a million small things - some seemingly harmless - can result in one terrible act. Nancy knew from an early age that she wanted to act. “I wasn’t a particularly confident child or great academically,” she recalls, “but when I acted I just felt really safe and felt really sure of myself.” It was her father who first noticed her flair for performing, but he died suddenly when Nancy was just 10. But her mother, who still lives in SE16, carried on supporting Nancy’s dream. She says, “after Dad died my Mum was brilliant raising three of us and letting me get involved when and where I could with performing, driving me everywhere and letting me show her my practiced pieces in the living room for hours. We didn’t know anyone in the industry or have any “way in” so it was just about grabbing any opportunities.”

The young actor went to the BRIT School but feels her best training came under the tutelage of actor/ director Peter Ferris during Monday night sessions in a room in a pub

with other teenagers.

Bringing Nancy’s back story up to date, she has just completed filming on Call The Midwife and is also in the new Afterlife series by Ricky Gervais, which is coming to Netflix next year but she jokes “Hollywood isn’t knocking yet!” I’d say that if Gervais has knocked, who cares about Hollywood?

I wanted to know what drew her to the character Leah. “I love the role, the challenge of a one-woman play and what it leaves the audience challenging. She’s a woman in her 30s, working class and aspiring to have all the things she’s meant to want. She’s funny, relatable and brutally honest. Leah is your sister, daughter, girlfriend. We all know women like Leah, she resonates in all of us.” The passion emanating from Nancy when she spoke of playing this woman was undeniable.

Fabric is a production in support of Solace Women’s Aid, which for more than 40 years has supported women and children in London to build safe, strong lives free from violence and abuse. The play will tour to four London boroughs identified by Solace as target areas, and Southwark is one of those boroughs. Nancy was visibly moved when she spoke of performing on her own manor. “I can’t wait to bring this play to home ground in Southwark, and I’d love to know what the Southwark people make of it.”

Spanish playwright and theatre director José Sanchis Sinisterra is one of the most respected authors of contemporary Spanish theatre and a great renovator of the Spanish scene. José is the author of more than forty plays, including originals and adaptations, among which are Terror and misery in the first

Franquismo (1979), Ñaque o De piojos y actores (1980) and Ay, Carmela! (1986).

The Cervantes Theatre opened in November 2016 and is home of the Spanish Theatre Company, a charity that aims to bring the best Spanish and Latin American theatre to London, and promote Spanish language dramatic arts.

12 days of cinematic magic

he BFI London Film Festival is back with 12 days of cinematic magic. Now in its 62nd year, there’s 228 feature films to choose from, including 21 world premieres, 9 international premieres and 29 European premieres, writes Laura Burgoine...

The festival’s Artistic Director and Camberwell local Tricia Tuttle talks to the Weekender about female directors, the Coen brothers and £5 tickets.

The Festival opens with the European Premiere of Academy Award winner Steve McQueen’s film Widows, on Wednesday 10 October. “We’ve screened every one of his feature films and love his work,” Tricia said. “When I heard he was making this film I was super excited. It works as a genre film, it’s a cracking heist thriller and there’s a lot of interesting things going on with class, gender and race conflict. It’s very modern and stylish.”

The Coen Brothers return to the festival for the third time with the UK premiere of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, a wildly idiosyncratic anthology of six Western stories starring Tim Blake Nelson, Zoe Kazan, Liam Neeson and Tom Waits. “It’s six short vignettes linked together and it’s really beautiful,” Tricia

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs said. “You enter the film through the device of reading a book with these beautifully designed colour pages taking you into each story.

Each mini story is a really different expression of the western; it’s more comedic than you might expect. You’ve got acerbic wit, dark wit, bleak irony, and a gothic darkly comic story with Liam Neeson. There’s a number of actors audiences will recognise.

This is a real treat for Coen fans.”

The headline gala sees Melissa McCarthy take on the true story of author, literary forger and thief Lee Israel in Can You Ever Forgive Me? “This is another comedy with a caustic edge,” Tricia said.

“Melissa McCarthy plays celebrity biographer Lee Israel, who discovers her business of writing celebrity biographies is drying up so she starts to forge letters of famous authors and finds she has quite a talent for impersonating them. It’s very funny but also a very moving story. Melissa McCarthy really gets a chance to stretch her legs as an actor.”

The Man Who Killed Don Quixote A Private War features as the Mayor of London’s Gala. Academy Award nominated and Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Matthew Heineman makes a striking dramatic debut with this pulseracing biopic of The Sunday Times war correspondent Marie Colvin, played by Rosamund Pike.

Two decades in the making, the hotly anticipated film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote sees a disillusioned advertising executive pulled into a world of time-jumping fantasy when a Spanish cobbler believes him to be Sancho Panza.

The film stars Adam Driver, Jonathan Pryce and Stellan Skarsgård.

In British film The White Crow, Ralph Fiennes directs Oleg Ivenko as renowned ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev. “Ralph Fiennes has a really strong directing voice.

It’s a beautiful story about the early years of Nureyev when he defected from the Soviet Union and went to Paris,” Tricia said.

The Festival closes with the world premiere of Stan and Ollie on

Sunday 21 October.

This year’s programme is a feast for film lovers. “We were super excited putting the festival together. It’s a really strong year and there’s such a breadth of films.

The awards season is going to be dog eat dog,” Tricia said. “October is a good point in the year to hold a film festival; so many films get released and we’re like kids in a candy store.”

The selection process starts in January; Tricia and her team research for four or five months and look into which films are coming out, and who’s distributing them. “After tracing down the films we start going to festivals: Sundance, Berlin, Cannes. I have my dream job,” Tricia said.

There’s a number of London and UK-made films that are not to be missed. Tricia highlights VS. which follows a foster-teen teetering on the edge of self-destruction who finds himself in the UK battle rap scene.

In the documentary section, Irene’s Ghost is a top pick.

Filmmaker Iain Cunningham’s mother died when he was young and his family never talk about it, so he goes on a quest to break the silence and discover the mother he never knew.

The BFI also runs educational programs and is holding screenings for primary and secondary students from schools in Southwark, Lambeth, Greenwich and Lewisham. This year, schools can attend the world premiere of Peter Jackson’s World War I film They Shall Not Grow Old at the BFI Southbank. “It’s a free schools event and Peter Jackson will be there live in person answering questions afterwards,” Tricia said.

Any unsold tickets to screenings throughout the festival are available for £5 for 18-25 year olds if they show up 45 minutes ahead of the start time. Tricia said there’s usually leftover tickets up for grabs and it’s a great opportunity for locals to get discounted access.

“We’re proud of the fact that 38 percent of the films in this festival are made by female directors,” Tricia said. “There’s such a rich diversity in the festival. My advice for audiences is look for gems you wouldn’t get to see on general release.”

This kind of footage has never been released before' Dulwich director Jonathan Hacker on his new documentary film Path of Blood

he action of watching home video footage for most would elicit the idea of reminiscing about nativity plays, birthdays or weddings that have gone by over the years. However, there is now a very different type of homemade film – made available by the Dulwich-based director and producer of a gripping new motion picture Path of Blood, writes Danny Wiser...

Jonathan Hacker has turned hundreds of hours of footage shot by terrorists into a 90-minute thriller in an attempt to understand their theology and psychology of Jihadis.

“The one thing I can guarantee is no-one will be bored for a fraction of a second, it is gripping. Your stomach will be tight, the tension is there all the way through,” Jonathon told the Weekender.

“Quite often you go to the cinema and three days later you cannot remember the film, whereas this, it will stay with you.

this kind of footage has never been released before,” said the Dulwich resident of seven years.

“What you are getting is privileged access behind-thescenes in safe-houses with Al Qaeda as they plan to overthrow a country.”

The film is a story of cat and mouse between the security services in Saudi Arabia and the terrorists based there.

Using solely terrorist shot footage, the film gives a deep insight into the Islamic civil war as well as the mentality of the Jihadis themselves.

“I think that you can see there is a strand of psychology within these terrorists which is profoundly romantic,” said Hacker.

“They see themselves and their own self-image is as warriors of old sacrificing themselves for a great cause.”

The film comes just over a year from the London Bridge attack and the director feels it is time the general public start to understand the nuances of terrorism if we are to defeat it.

He makes a clear distinction

between the Saudi terrorists who are featured in the film trying to defeat the government and those that are reported on more regularly in the mainstream media.

“I think it is very important not to say all Jihadis are the same.

Your average ISIS fighter at the moment in the throes of the Syrian Civil War is a very different character from the guys in this film.

“We tend to feel this is a battle between Al Qaeda and ISIS and the West and that is certainly how those terrorists would like to portray it.

“The reality is the real fighting is going on within the Muslim world.

What goes on in the West is a sideshow.”

Yet, Hacker implies that we can use Path of Blood to find common themes and patterns that exist within radical Islamism, such as the desperate need to prove themselves that some individuals feel and the romanticism that surrounds death.

This he believes is in deep contrast to the typical

metropolitan westerner whose faith is something quite often engrained with doubt and not taken literally.

Nevertheless, although being excited by the prospect of reaching a tangible physical place in the afterlife may act as motivation for the terrorists it does not always help them to achieve their targets.

The director said: “One of the things that people have said gets in the way in the way of any strategic thinking in terms of mission planning, all they are concerned about is dying in the line of duty not succeeding in any mission.”

Soon after graduating from Oxford University, where he began making films, Hacker got a scholarship to study drama at the University of Southern California for a year before beginning a career in which he has already made two films on terrorism.

He previously investigated Aum Shinrikyo, a cult in Japan who set off Sarin nerve gas at a Tokyo subway station, on a show called Zero Hour; as well as

Britain’s First Suicide Bombers, an investigative film into Asif Hanif and Omar Sharif who were on the fringes of the Al Qaeda in England around the time of the 7/7 bombing.

This film, however, he hopes will have the greatest impact on its audience even if it is a difficult watch particularly for Muslim viewers.

“If we are to defeat this phenomena it is essential we understand it. Understanding the need human beings have to belong, to be part of a society, to have a career and a sense of purpose, these are really important to understand.

“Just like Germany has talked about its past and to be commended for it, the (Muslim) community will do the same I am sure.”

Flawless chase the dream

n a performance that promises to be absolutely Flawless, dancer, choreographer and creative director Marlon “Swoosh” Wallen is bringing his league of street dance superstars to Greenwich, writes Laura Burgoine...

Flawless stormed onto the scene in 2004, inspiring the masses with their dazzling dance moves and taking top prize at the World Dance Champions twice. The group was hurled into the spotlight as 2009 stars of Britain’s Got Talent, where they wowed audiences with their signature spins, splits and flips. Having firmly cemented themselves as pioneers of their genre, their formidable portfolio includes starring in the smash hit movie franchise Street Dance and performing for the Royal Family.

One of the dance troop’s goals is to encourage people to pursue their dreams. “The majority of people have 9-5 jobs, and whether it’s the case of responsibilities, work, bills or family, it can stop them from focusing on their dreams,” Marlon said.

“People get distracted.

Youngsters have the ambition to do something and we need to give them the support they need.

That’s the key thing behind this show.”

Drawing influence from dance icons such as Michael Jackson, James Brown and Gene Kelly, Flawless is known for a wide repertoire. “As far as music is concerned, it’s very broad. Don’t

expect to just spectate; there’s lots of different types of music,” Marlon said.

Marlon began his dance career at age four; he started off copying Michael Jackson in front of the TV. “As far as dance goes, there wasn’t a Flawless before Flawless,” he said. “What we’re doing now is an evolution. Back in 2000, street dance wasn’t a career. It was done for fun.”

He enjoyed a solo career as a dancer, working for big names in the industry. “My first job was as a backup dancer for Victoria Beckham on her solo tour after the Spice Girls. That was amazing,” he said.

“I was also a dancer for Madonna in her music video for Hung Up. She’s amazing.

So down to earth. She really mingles and has conversations with people she’s working with.

She doesn’t make you feel like she’s on a pedestal. She’s very cool.”

After a star-studded solo career, Marlon decided to branch

out. “I just felt like after a period of time, you do these shows, you go home and your family are proud of you but then I went back to the drawing board and decided to find a group of dreamers who had the same goals as me,” he said.

“That’s how I developed Flawless, and the only way to be taken seriously was to make it a business,” he continued.

Flawless had been going for four years before appearing on Britain’s Got Talent. “It gave us a national profile, and we’re grateful. Now, we’ve been able to understand our fan base and also tap into a new generation,” Marlon said.

As CEO and director of Flawless Entertainment, which he runs with business partner Amelia Benoit, Marlon now runs a dance school for children and adults, with lessons on Sundays, at Base Dance Studios in Vauxhall.

for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee concert in 2012. “Now when we work with an artist, it’s more of a collaboration,” Marlon said.

“That was insane. A pinch yourself moment. The idea came from the Queen herself. We did two different shows for her: one in her living room, which was just the royal family, us, and some young performers,” he said.

Lambeth Open shines a light on the borough’s talented creatives and allows people to explore their neighbourhood and see behind the scenes of studios, offering an insight into the technical processes and inspirations that go into the making of the art work.

Visitors can also take in private views at a number of exhibition spaces.

THIS YEAR’S ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE: Kate Culling, 69 Shakespeare Road, SE24 0LA With a love of vibrant colours, Kate uses watercolour inks and liquid acrylics to obtain the luminosity she searches for.

Her paintings explore organic shapes; they are bold and contemporary. Kate’s inspiration comes from the landscape of the Vercors in France and now the rolling hills of Herefordshire.

Kate exhibits with several art groups and has a solo exhibition annually at The Weavers Gallery, Ledbury. She is an artist in residence at Apple Store Gallery, Hereford.

Jimin Seo, 401•5 Studios, 401 Wandsworth Rd, SW8 2JP Dr. Jimin Seo is the creative director and designer of Mynn London, which launched in 2017. A woven tie designer, Jimin studied drawing, painting, dyeing, printing, weaving and fashion at university in South Korea. In 2016 she completed her PhD in textiles at the Royal college of Art in London, where she researched how people can have a more emotional bond with textiles. Mynn London is a lifestyle brand that suggests “fun” and “unique” lifestyle with textiles inspired by the dynamic of contemporary culture.

Anna Lando, 2 Kelman Close, SW4 6JE Anna Lando was born in Venice and spent a few years traveling with her husband in Africa until finally settling in London. Her considerable body of work, from over 40 years, is an accumulation of influences that have come to her through her life. She is self-taught.

Rebecca’s distinctive narrative style is influenced by an Irish country childhood, extensive travelling and a love of Mughal miniatures, with their rich earth colours and bold designs.

She shows with Jonathan Cooper in London, as well as internationally.

Alex Mayer, 40 Weir Road, SW12 0NA Alex Mayer has been involved in art and textiles, both practising and teaching. Now working in partnership with Eveline Droge at Bantam Knits, the duo create beautiful hand-dyed cashmere fashion accessories and they also screen print hand-drawn images of dogs on colourful linen cushions and other interior accessories.

John Bateson, 25 Pulross Road, SW9 8AF Painting is in John’s blood; his mother and grandmother were both painters and they were his first teachers. John is a long term resident of Brixton and a number of his paintings take the local area as his subject. John paints in a variety of medium including pastels and oils. He also makes linocut prints. John has recently had his picture “The Number 3 Bus” turned into a banner where it is hanging on The Number 3 Bus route.

Martin Grover, 31 Morrish Rd, SW2 4EB After studying art at Croydon College, Trent Polytechnic and the Royal Academy Schools sometime last century Martin has worked consistently and exhibited extensively. He paints and screen prints portraits of old vinyl records in their dog eared sleeves and covers and compiles record label alphabets. When not doing this, he paints and illustrates melancholic scenes from the passing world.

He also makes funny, wistful

pastiches of the iconic London Bus Stop. He is currently trying to establish the South London Procrastination Club.

Emma Nacht, 401•5 Studios , 401 Wandsworth Rd, SW8 2JP Emma Nacht’s work is handmade, intricate and delicate.

She has been working with patterns, specifically geometric or arabesque, which she has found mesmerising during some trips to India, Morocco and Granada. She doesn’t copy the patterns but modifies the original ones; coming up with new asymmetrical patterns in her work. She loves working in sterling silver and enjoys dabbling in gold. Emma is always happy to be faced with a challenge of some sort, so bespoke items are always on the menu. Visit her in her studio where she will be working on her designs during the weekend. You never know, you may leave with a new piece or come up with a new personalised design that only you will possess.

Sat 6th & Sun 7th October Julie Sullock, 8 Sibella Road, SW4 6HX Julie Sullock studied Fine Art at St Martin’s School of Art and then completed an MA at Brighton Polytechnic. Julie was brought up in Clapham and still lives in South London. Since leaving Art School, Julie has continued to exhibit her paintings and prints in the UK and abroad.

She combines screen printing and etching to create opaque and translucent layers of colour in her work. Julie is a member of Southbank Printmakers, an artist run group who exhibit their work at Gabriel’s Wharf, near Waterloo. More of her work can be viewed at Southbank Printmakers Gallery.

Richard Peacock, Southbank Printmakers, 56 Upper Ground, SE1 9PP Richard Peacock is a printmaker, making limited edition screen prints and woodcuts. He is showing his work at Southbank Printmakers, which is a printmakers collective with a gallery at Gabriel’s Wharf: Richard is one of the members of this group of 40 artists. In Richard’s screen prints, the image is constructed using colour, shape and pattern. Often the stencils he uses come from everyday pieces of packaging from objects such as light bulbs and rolls of sticky tape. His work is a combination of abstraction and pop art. He also makes wood cuts and with this technique he likes to use weathered wood, often recovered from skips. The history of the wood is partially revealed by the printing process – grain and surface damage. In particular, he likes using recovered cable drums discarded by builders. As part of the Open Studios Richard will organise printmaking demonstrations on both days of the event.

Julie Nicaisse, 401•5 Studios, 401 Wandsworth Rd, SW8 2JP Julie Nicaisse gives life to metal by translating the magic and mystery of the ‘unconventional’ found in natural objects into beautiful talismanic adornments.

A marriage between organic vibes and dark elegance, the outcome of Julie’s passion for history, love for the planet, and admiration of fauna and flora.

Diyala Muir, 401•5 Studios, 401 Wandsworth Rd, SW8 2JP Diyala Muir is an animation artist based in London. She makes animated films and loops surrounding the human cycles of loneliness and sexual desire.

Her abstract narratives reflect the chaotic inner world of her protagonists in a darkly comic and naive style. Since graduating from the Royal College of Art in

Phyllis Todd, 48 Hanover Gardens, Oval, SE11 5TN Phyllis Todd has lived and worked in London for 30 years.

She has spent much time figure drawing from the model and this is reflected in her 1 minute gesture drawings and photo etching prints. She has also travelled extensively and her latest work reflects this. Her recent paintings are in the form of “story boards,” a method of recording all the images of a country or place as opposed to one particular view. Phyllis likes to make a surface to draw on and uses various papers and fabrics to that end.

Luke Walker, 401•5 Studios, 401 Wandsworth Rd, SW8 2JP Luke Walker’s practice derives

from an exploration of the environment, primarily through walking. His most recent work involves collecting specific data on each walk, the length, the pace, the altitude or number of steps and translating the data into a painting. These ‘potential landscapes’ are paintings of the activity of walking and painting but also of time and distance.

It is these spatial and temporal qualities that he is keen to express in his work, whether through constructed landscapes or from a direct observation of the environment.

t’s now time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth form or college you find

out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about resitting. After spending the whole of your life in school you might think

that re-sitting any GCSE would be completely out of the question.

However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital. Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth

form or college will be so different to that at school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult.

After all you don’t have to be there - it is your choice. This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the self-motivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting.

Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

Last of the summer pizzas

Highway fun The Highway Rat is being screened at The Royal Festival Hall with a live orchestral soundtrack. The animated special is based on the family favourite book, penned by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffer.

It will be projected onto the big screen, and live music will be performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra, for a family concert experience.
