Families in Southwark can get a cardio fix at the Little Half: a fun, family friendly mass participation event that will see 4,000 people running a 2.4 mile course. It is part of the Big Half Festival taking place on Sunday 4 March 2018. The event starts in Southwark Park at 12.30pm and finishes, along with The Big Half, at the iconic Cutty Sark in Greenwich.

It’s the perfect challenge for first-time runners, children and anyone looking to get more healthy and active. The Little Half is not a race and there will not be an official time so you can just take part and have fun. Afterwards, you can head to the Big Festival in Greenwich Park. NEXT LEVEL Transforming the empty multi-storey carpark famed for housing Frank’s café on the rooftop, Peckham Levels is the area’s newest creative, business, and foodie district. TUNE UP London’s first Tuneless Choir is launching in Vauxhall, for those who can’t sing in tune but love to do it anyway.

The choir is being set up by Jazz vocalist and singing teacher Talibah Rivers is planning a wide variety of songs for the launch night, from Amy Winehouse’s ‘Valerie’ to some Elvis and Abba classics.

The choir will meet at the Tea House Theatre, 139 Vauxhall Walk, SE11 5HL. Launch night is Wednesday 10 January: doors will open at 7pm with singing starting at 8pm.

Big Fish Little Fish is holding a big family rave at Fire / Lightbox in Vauxhall on Saturday 27 January to launch their Camp Bestival warm-up south of England tour.

The fancy dress theme is 'Sailing the Seven Seas' to fit in with Camp Bestival’s nautical theme.

Expecting about 800 guests, DJs 2 Bad Mice will play the main room while Baker & Beale play a techno set in the tunnel with light up LED ceiling.

Go with the Flo at the Hideaway

“The Hideaway is minutes from my mother’s house; I was living in America when it was built and thought I’ve got to get in there,” Flo told the Weekender. Now based in Hastings, Flo is excited to come back to her old stomping ground.

“Usually when I play, I’m carting my family across to West London. I’m loving the lay out at Hideaway; it’s a really nice spot,” she said.

Flo shot to fame as one half of the late ‘90s R&B duo Floetry, but her career actually started with spoken word. “I wanted to create a show I’d loved to have gone to as a younger poet,” she said.

The residency follows from a soldout night at Hideaway in September.

“After Floetry had moved on to do other things, and I made my first and second solo album, I felt myself ready to do other things, and get back on the road,” Flo said. “When you want something from the world, it’s good to go about an offering, rather than just taking. What’s been immeasurable in offerings are those

open-mic spaces where I’ve been able to work on my craft,” she said.

“I wanted to give something back for open-mic and particularly poetry.”

The events marries Flo’s two passions: music and poetry. “I wanted to invite as many people as possible to perform, so we’d have a varied blend and it could move the way our mind does,” she said. With 20 poets, split into two vortexes, the spoken word night attracts “the most incredible audience who come out to listen, and laugh and disagree.”

“We have poets from all different walks of life, different genders, and cultures. It’s not the same cadence of voice. What we’ve really created is a beautiful first Thursday of the month where we have poets coming from America, Italy, Ireland... It’s such a beautiful tribe.”

Flo has just celebrated the third year anniversary of the spoken word events. “We’ve hosted over 300 poets,” she said. “Now at Hideaway, once a month, we come and we kind of give a bit of protective layering to get through the next month,” she continued.

Flo does “blocks of travel” nowadays but it’s a far cry from the early years of her career. “I did ten years of just touring. That was perfectly set in my twenties,” she

said. “Now there’s not so much tap dancing. It’s vigorous work.”

“I started traveling from birth. My father was in the army so I was an army brat. And for the performance aspect I went to the Brit school, for me it was heaven,” Flo recalled.

At 19 she became a performance poet, and by 21 she left for America with her Floetry bandmate Marsha Ambrosius.

“Marsha, at the time, was singing and she produced really hot tracks. But I didn’t feel inspired to run to a record company in England and say I have this great idea; there didn’t seem to be an avenue and I knew there were stages elsewhere,” Flo said.

“The idea of black people doing entertainment in a certain way: soul, gospel, hip hop, there’s actually an industry for that in America,” she continued. “Here, it would be very difficult for a black girl to get signed, pushed and supported singing something like Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black –which is a fantastic album, and very much a lover’s rock album in its feeling, sound and musicality.”

As a musician Flo has sold over 2 million records and worked with Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and Earth, Wind and Fire, just to

name a few. “It hasn’t stopped me but in terms of reality, I’m a seven time Grammy nominated artist and the fact does remain that I’m not signed by Island Records,” she said.

“I’m a very proud British person, I’m a proud Windrush descendent.”

Flo convinced Marsha to accompany her to America: the land of opportunity. “I was led to where there was a thriving spoken word industry. The live circuit was there,” Flo said. Atlanta boasted really well established open mic jam sessions.

“We went on a two week trip and spent five days in Atlanta, and eight days in Philadelphia where there was the roots movement, neo soul, a touch of jazz. Big Narstie’s jam session was $5 to get in and you could see anyone from Jill Scott, to Jazmine Sullivan at 14 with her Mum bringing her.

It was just a scene; a plethora of musicians of an exceptional quality,” she said.

Marsha and Flo went on to work with Michael Jackson to produce

the 2002 single Butterflies. “Jazzy Jeff who owns Touch of Jazz made a bunch of songs, including Butterflies. He just happened to be one of Michael Jackson’s best friends,” Flo said. “Four months later we were in the studio with Michael; he insisted both of us be in the session. We spent two weeks with him in the Hit Factory in New York, and it was a beautiful period of time.

He gave us so much advice on being an artist; it was a great honour and privilege.”

Hunker down in the bunker T

he Bunker on Southwark Street has a bold new spring season in store for theatregoers. Artistic director Joshua McTaggart takes the Weekender through the year ahead.

“We have four main house shows; this is the first time since we launched that we have a curated season of four shows,” Josh said. “We’re keen to go back to bodies of work.”

The season opens with Olivier and Tony award-winning writer Terry Johnson’s Ken, which transfers from Hampstead Theatre following a highly successful run in their Downstairs studio last year.

“It’s about an experimental avante garde artist in the ‘70s and ‘80s with a piece honouring one of our founding fathers of experimental theatre,” Josh said.

Following this, DumbWise Theatre reinvent Electra, reimagining the murderous Greek myth of power and prophecy as a lyrical modern epic with a live punk-rock score. “Dumbwise are a Bristol based company who met at Rose Bruford together, and this is their first production in London,” Josh said. “It’s nice to find companies outside of our bubble in London. Greeks are very musical and lyrical with their plays.”

Next up, Josh is directing the world premiere of Devil With The Blue Dress by Kevin Armento, a play that interrogates the infamous Monica Lewinsky Scandal and is The Bunker's first American production.

“I went to uni in the states.

When we were programming, I was looking for a new play, and emailed my American contacts, looking for female writers and female driven stories,” he said.

“Across the world with all these sexual assault allegations, especially within the arts, there’s still the problematic issue of men in power, and how we respond to women seeking power.”

The playwright Kevin Armento is coming to London to develop the play at the Bunker. “It’s exciting for us. It’s a five female cast, and one

non-speaking male saxophone player,” Josh said.

The season concludes with Izzy Tennyson’s Grotty, which offers a dark and savage journey that digs

beneath the surface of lesbian subculture in London.

“Our remit is to showcase the voice and case of women onstage,” Josh said. “We’re

looking at different stories out there that aren’t getting a platform to be told, and bringing those voices together.”

Going Undergound Vaults festival returns with Steampunk circus and Police Cops in Space

N

ow in its sixth year, London’s biggest performing arts festival is set to take over Waterloo with 250 individual shows, its first New Writers award, and a series of roundtable discussions tackling gender equality in theatre. One of the founders of VAULT Festival, Tim Wilson, tells the Weekender why this is the most diverse programme to date.

“Attendance goes up every year,” Tim said. “In the sense of capturing London’s attention we’re seeing the difference.”

The arts platform, in the railway tunnels beneath Waterloo station, picked up where the Old Vic Tunnels left off. “The Old Vic Tunnels shut in 2012, and that was the start of the Vaults,” Tim said. “London has a good history of these archways; people hold it close to their heart.”

He highlights Becoming Shades as one show not to be missed.

“It’s steam punk circus noir cabaret, and they’re doing a

show for the whole eight weeks at 9:30pm every night,” Tim said.

“It’s a perfect wild adventure into a totally different visual experience. They’re a rag tag band, who’ve come together into a super group of circus and party promoters.”

Another big new show is Neverland the musical, by the same guys who presented the immersive Great Gatsby last year. “It’s an immersive musical based in Neverland with Hook and all the gang,” Tim said.

1200 people applied to take part in the Vaults this year. “Some shows aren’t made yet when we commission them. We make that clear to audiences when it’s a Vaults original,” Tim said.

The shows are all Fringe-length with a one hour running time.

“That way you can see a couple of things, not spend a huge amount of time and money, and it’s a great night in a cool place where you can see a wide variety of things,” Tim said.

This year eleven Waterloo venues are taking part, including Waterloo East theatre, Network theatre, the Traveling Through Bookshop, and a new space on the graffiti tunnel called the Maze.

Dare yourself to do the Moonwalk Every year, troops of power walkers storm Clapham Common in decorated bras, covering a marathon (or half marathon) loop around London to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. Founder of the MoonWalk London, and its associated breast cancer charity Walk the Walk, Nina Barough has always been an avid walker but the MoonWalk started as a dream, writes Laura Burgoine...

“I dreamt that I walked the New York marathon in a bra to raise money for breast cancer. I thought a weekend in New York would be fab but I didn’t know anyone with breast cancer,” Nina said. “When I did find my cancer, it was three years I’d had it, and was an aggressive tumour. I had a lot to be grateful for and the decision to do it was very flippant.”

“I feel like I’ve had two lives: before cancer and after.”

Nina had never done a marathon, and never wanted to, but the concept took off fast. “We ended up with 13 of us doing the New York marathon. It was controversial, that 20 years ago, we wore bras,” she said. “You couldn’t go out and buy colourful bras at the time. We’d dye white bras turquoise or pink and you had to have a celebrity designed bra. We had some amazing bras: Terry Wogan designed one, Chris Evans did a few, we had authors, Prime Minister’s wives. It grew organically.”

To train for a marathon Nina knew she’d have to up the ante.

“At the time it was called speed walking and was really big in Europe, and Ireland but walking was seen as a poor relation.

Nobody recognised it as a sport in its own right,” Nina said.

Nina began calling her technique power walking –a term she coined. “It was at that time Spice Girls were at the forefront

with girl power,” she said. “There is a whole technique. Most people can walk three miles an hour, a lot of people can get to 3.8 or 4 miles an hour, but if you want to get faster then technique is everything.”

Using your arms and entire body correctly is key. “If you’re walking at a certain pace, there comes a point where your body will start to run. But if you keep on walking, and develop the technique, power walking uses the same amount of energy as a runner.”

Power talking uses the entire body. “It’s been described by scientists as the perfect exercise,” Nina said. “It’s a low impact, non-injury forming sport, that increases your heart rate, and you don’t have that pain threshold like with running,” she continued. You can also progress quickly.

“If you walk three or four times a week for 45 minutes, over two

weeks you’ll feel a difference. It creeps up on you, which is very motivating, very positive.”

A lot of people who sign up for the MoonWalk will underestimate it. “It’s no mean feat. 26 miles at night is a long way,” Nina said.

“We provide a lot of support, and a 12-week training plan. We want people to feel fitter. It’s really lovely for people to go out, take on a challenge, and raise money.”

In terms of training, you can’t

start too soon. “The more you do, on the night it means you’re enjoying what’s going on, rather than thinking every step of this is purgatory,” Nina said. “We’ve funded research that has proven changes to diet, nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle habits have an impact in prevention against disease. The ball is in our court.”

To date, Nina has power walked about 70 or 80 marathons. “I used to do all of them every year. I’m very active. I’m always

walking and my level of fitness never drops too low. I love that I can, at any time, take on a marathon,” she said.

Nina has always been health focused, and before cancer she was a reiki master and masseuse. “It’s very different when you’re confronted with your own life existence,” she said.

“Even though I got breast cancer, being into health foods and organic foods helped me recover very quickly, and while I was going through treatment it gave me a focus: what I ate was something I could take control of,” she said. “In terms of food –if it’s not organic, it’s not going in.

I’ve been a vegetarian for many years, I’m a big vitamin taker. It’s about making calculated choices for you.”

With the new year rolling in, Nina says “dare yourself to sign up for this year’s MoonWalk.”

“Most of the people who come each year are people who have never taken on a challenge before,” Nina said. “We get all ages. Our eldest walker is well into her 80s; the youngest is 13.

We’re going to help everyone every step of the way with a training plan, and how to buy shoes. Sometimes you sign up for something and you’re on your own. Not with Walk the walk, we want to help you get to the start line in great shape.”

“Women tend to put their lives on the back burner for kids, or whatever else, but this is something they can do for themselves. One of the most common messages I get afterwards is how empowered they feel,” Nina said. “Often people do the MoonWalk, get a bit addicted, enjoy the social, physical, and emotional side of it and compete with themselves, under the safety and umbrella of the charity.”

the reassurance that I was enjoying it very much. It was an incredible mix of pain and pleasure. I do suffer with lower back pain from time to time and I felt Ying was very sympathetic to this.

The Thai Sense Spa has ten therapists, eight of whom are from Thailand. There are bars along the ceiling so they can walk along your body, if desired. The experience was very authentic, and it was one of the best massages I've ever had. Not to mention, very reasonably priced.

I would highly recommend using Thai Sense Spa. It’s easy to access by public transport, and has good parking facilities nearby. Just so there is no confusion; there are no steam or sauna facilities.

he owners Nigel Bastow and Ann Ninjinda welcomed me to Thai Sense Spa for a onehour deep tissue massage (£45).

First up, I was taken to my room which was nicely warmed; even the mat you lie on was heated! The room was scented with various essential oils. I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the room and the facilities they provide – they even gave me a spare pair of knickers! I did notice they had an adjoining room, which is perfect for couples wanting to massage together.

Ying was my therapist – she was fantastic! She asked if I have any allergies. As

someone with a severe sesame allergy, I’m used to having to inform people

everywhere I go, but it was nice to be asked first. Ying was very caring and kept

asking, along the way, how I felt; the noises I was making must have given her

A

great brunch is the recipe for a great weekend. While it’s hard to imagine brunch without eggs, if you’re over fried, poached or scrambled, it’s time to check out another option: the tart.

Newly opened on Lordship Lane, Tart offers a trendy alternative for your weekending. Starting as a stand in Herne Hill market, the concept –dreamt up by two tart enthusiasts from Brixton, Jason and Adam- now boasts two permanent eateries and is gradually taking over South London one tart at a time. After visiting their East Dulwich branch, I must admit – I am a convert.

The café is set in a former French restaurant with beautifully tiled walls. Given that the tart originated in France, it seems a fitting home. A neon sign leads into a cozy sunlit conservatory that provides a serene setting, perfect for spending a peaceful weekend morning sheltered from the high street buzz. I feel that I have found a hidden gem that is yet to be discovered by crowds.

The menu awakens your tastebuds with winning combos such as chorizo and goat cheese or poached pear and gorgonzola. The classic brunch staples - Benedicte or Royal poached eggs and sourdough toast with avocado are also on offer. But

I’m won over by halloumi and avo with poached eggs and mint aioli on gluten free cornbread for guilt-free pre-tart indulgence.

The Tarts themselves are very reasonably priced and can be served for brunch on their own or lunch with a side of salad. I go for a parma ham, rocket and red onion jam tart, beautifully topped with gorgonzola and tiny poached pears peeking through its gooey surface.

I ask for a side of spelt, green beans, peas, toasted almonds, pesto and feta salad to balance the richness. My companion had high praise for her chorizo, red pepper, tomato and goats cheese tart with za’atar-roasted sweet potato salad, masala yoghurt sauce and toasted seeds. It was a feast. The tarts are lusciously fresh and, accompanied with a salad, make the perfect sized lunch. The coffee is worth a

mention too – if like me, you are a bit of a caffeine snob, Volcano Coffee Works brew won’t leave you disappointed.

With a gluten-free, full flavored raspberry chocolate brownie in hand for afternoon tea, we emerged back on the high street fully satisfied and a bit smug having discovered a secret brunch venue. It won’t stay that way for long!

Your local pharmacy - your first stop when winter bugs bite MANY HEALTH complaints, such as coughs and colds, will get better by themselves over time and are best treated at home, with rest. If you need advice on medicines that can help relieve symptoms, your local pharmacist can help.

High street pharmacies and supermarkets stock a range of remedies for common conditions like sore throats and ear pain, and you don't need to visit your GP to get them. Local GPs do not give NHS prescriptions for medicines for short term illnesses or conditions that are widely available over the counter. Also, antibiotics which are only available on NHS prescription are not effective against cold and flu viruses and will not be prescribed by a GP for this purpose.

A pharmacist is a qualified healthcare professional who

can recognise many common complaints and recommend medicines to help you. They can advise on things you can do at home to help yourself and will tell you if your problem is more serious and you do need to see your GP. Pharmacies are usually open later into the evening and at weekends. Instead of booking and waiting for a GP appointment, you can visit a pharmacy any time during opening hours and you don't need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private area where you can have a confidential chat with a pharmacist about your condition and your medication.

As well as cough and cold remedies, pharmacies also stock painkillers and products for conditions such as diarrhoea, indigestion and bites and stings.

You can also get your annual flu

vaccination from your pharmacy.

Washing your hands with soap

and water and teaching your children to do the same can help

stop you catching and spreading infections.

Extra GP and nurse appointments in Southwark, 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week

GPS AND nurses in Southwark want to raise awareness of the availability of extra GP and nurse appointments in the borough. Available from 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week,

from two locations in the north and south of the borough, these extra appointments are for most of the normal things people see their GP of nurse for.

The service is called the Extended Primary Care Service and is provided at Lister Health Centre in Peckham and Spa Medical Centre in Bermondsey.

This is not a walk-in service; patients are offered an appointment at one of the centres by contacting their own GP surgery. When their surgery is closed, patients should call the out of hours GP service, SELDOC on 020 8693 9066.

Dr Sharjeel Hasan, GP and clinical lead, North Southwark Extended Primary Care Service said: “The Extended Primary Care Service is an extension of your

own GP surgery. You may not see your usual doctor or nurse but they will have the same skills.

Any doctor or nurse that you see or speak to will, with your consent, have access to your health information and history. This means they will be able to offer the right care and treatment for you.”

“Appointments in the evenings and weekends are more convenient for many patients so, if you’re not sure whether the Extended Primary Care Service is right for you, ask your surgery and they will ensure you are seen in the right place.”

Launched in the south of the

borough in November 2014 and in the north in April 2015, the Extended Primary Care Service is funded by NHS Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group and provided by Southwark’s two GP federations, Quay Health Solutions and Improving Health Limited. GP federations are made up of all the GP surgeries in the borough and work together to improve services and health outcomes for patients.

The Extended Primary Care Service will be able to provide 87,000 additional GP and nurse appointments per year across the borough.

Sharing your care record to get you faster, safer, more effective support and treatment HEALTH AND care organisations across south east London are working to improve your care by connecting two successful electronic care record systems.

Currently, two separate systems offer a secure way of sharing

information electronically between local staff involved in your care.

This means that not everyone uses the same system and information can only be shared in pockets of south east London.

So, for example, if you lived in Lewisham but receive treatment from Guy’s and St Thomas’

NHS Foundation Trust – your records would not be immediately available to the staff looking after you or making the referral.

Work is underway to link these two systems together – connecting up some 15,000 care professionals across six boroughs to benefit approximately 2 million

people. Only relevant information about you will be securely and instantly shared between the staff who need it.

You can still express your views around how your information is shared and with who, by speaking to the person caring for you or your GP.

Information sharing across south east London is expected to launch in early 2018.

Advertising copy originated, written or designed by the publisher belongs to the publisher as the publisher’s copyright and may not be reproduced in any other publication or electronic media without the publisher’s written consent. The advertiser agrees to indemnify the publisher against any legal action brought against the publisher arising from the publication of the advertiser’s advertisement. One week’s written notice must be served upon the publisher for the cancellation of any pre-booked or series advertising. In the case of the publisher awarding the advertiser a series discount, the equivalent percentage of the discount must be repaid to the publisher. The placing of an advertisement by the advisor indicates that the advertiser accepts these terms and conditions and agrees to abide by them & that there can be no deviation from the terms and conditions unless formally agreed by both parties in writing prior to publication.
