A DESPERATE mum and dad are asking everyone possible to inundate the Secretary of State for Health with tweets, after receiving the devastating news that the NHS

decision whether to offer a drug which could change their son’s life has been postponed again.

Vikki and Dean Brown have waited fourteen agonising months to hear whether their Millwall-mad son Harvey, 6, who suffers from the ultra-rare disease Morquio, will have the chance to take medication which could help him live a longer, happier life.

Shameful letter should not have been sent

I

T’S AN administrative error, and of course they happen particularly in large organisations - but for the family of a man killed less than a month ago to receive a letter demanding benefit overpayment be returned is so utterly distressing.

Southwark Council bosses will obviously be aghast that a letter was sent out to the family of Tommy Blackmore, the 20-yearold who was killed after an incident near Tower Bridge last month. And so they should be. It’s simply unacceptable that the council can be so quick to send out such an insensitive - no, offensive - letter, which stated that because Tommy had ‘passed away’ his mother had been overpaid - a whopping £17.33.

It later transpired that no money was owed back to the council and that the letter had been sent in error, but this is beside the point.

Even if some sort of repayment was owed, there is a time and a place for doing this, and it is certainly not weeks after Maureen Blackmore’s son died.

The council says that it will review its training processes, but you really have to wonder how anyone could send out a letter like that.

NHS must stop dragging its feet!

W

E ALL know that the NHS is under huge financial pressures at the moment, with shocking stories of ambulance delays and A&E waiting times in the news on a regular basis.

So nobody would expect NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence), which advises the NHS on the drugs it can afford to offer, to rush into a recommendation about a new and costly treatment.

But Harvey Brown, an innocent Millwallmad six-year-old child with an ultra-rare disease, has been caught up in the beaurocracy of our groaning health system.

While he and the other 77 children in the UK with the degenerative disease, Morquio , deteriorate day by day, Bermondsey parents Vikki and Dean Brown continue to have an agonising wait to find out if their little boy will be able to get the treatment he so desperately needs to live a longer, happier life.

Since the drug Vimizim was successfully licensed last year in April, the NHS has failed to make a decision about funding the treatment while NICE carries out its research.

After the decision was put off until October last week, Harvey’s desperate parents are asking you all to take to Twitter and tell this country’s health boss to #fundourdrugsNOW With millions of NHS money spent paying back Private Finance Initiative schemes every year - surely we can use some of those funds better to give children like Harvey a better life?

Rare photographs of shell-shocked soldiers being treated at pioneering Maudsley Hospital go on display for the first time

RARE PHOTOGRAPHS have gone on display for the first time this week showing when the Maudsley Hospital in Southwark was a pioneering centre for the treatment of shellshocked soldiers during World War One.

Conceived in 1907 as a place of sanctuary for people with psychiatric disorders in the age of the ‘lunatic asylum’, the Maudsley was taken over for the war effort before it could officially open.

Shortly after the building was completed in 1915 it was requisitioned by the army and took in its first soldiers on January 6, 1916.

Over the next three years The Maudsley treated 12,400 cases of shell-shock and became renowned for its ground-breaking treatment and research of psychiatric injuries.

Temporary platforms were built west of Denmark Hill station, so patients suffering from severe cases of psychosis could be transported to the hospital away from sick or wounded troops - who could have

been ‘demoralised’ by their visible distress.

Initially the hospital had six wards - two for assessment and four for treatment - with144 beds in all. By 1917, it had expanded to 450 beds to treat 185 soldiers with shellshock and other acute mental disorders.

The facility was named after the co-founder and eminent psychiatrist, Henry Maudsley, who developed the

idea with the biochemist Frederick Mott.

While people with mental health conditions were largely being locked up, heavily sedated or both, Mott and Maudsley prescribed daily hot baths, good food, exercise and plenty of ‘distraction’. Within the calm, lilac-painted walls of The Maudsley there was a gymnasium, a carpenter’s workshop and a

vegetable patch.

The nurturing environment challenged every concept of psychiatric care at the time and the treatment offered at The Maudsley ‘war clinic’ informed what later became known as Occupational Therapy.

If military records still exist of what took place at The Maudsley, they are kept under lock and key. A

collection of photographs owned by the Bethlam Museum of the Mind are the only ones which tell the story of the brave new world of The Maudsley between 1916 and 1919.

They are now on display in an exhibition called The Maudsley at War in The Long Gallery at the Denmark Hill site until September 24. Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am – 5pm.

Victim stabbed in heart in Halloween knife attack

TWO MEN were sentenced to life in prison last week for the murder of eighteen-year-old David Maxwell, who was killed in a ‘brutal and vicious’ stabbing attack as he walked through Borough last October.

Ronnie Atuqiya, 20, of Second Avenue, Dagenham and Chudi Hengari-Ajufo, eighteen, of no fixed address, appeared at the Old Bailey on Friday. Atuqiya was recommended a minimum jail term of 20 years and Hengari-Ajufo was recommended a minimum of sixteen.

On Halloween last year, the two men attacked David without warning as he was walking through Pilgrimage Street in Borough with a friend. One of the men pulled out a knife and stabbed David through the shoulder and back, fatally piercing his heart.

Passing members of the public tried to help the victim and a London Air Ambulance was called.

However, David died around fortyfive minutes after the attack at 3.13pm.

Witnesses identified Atuqiya as the person who stabbed David, while mobile phone analysis also pinpointed both men at the scene of

Seriously injured teenager recovering at home ROTHERHITHE

A TEENAGER who was found badly injured at the Rotherhithe Tunnel last month has been released from hospital and is now recovering at home.

The nineteen-year-old from Bromley was discovered unresponsive at around 4.15am on June 26 with “serious head injuries”.

An ambulance was called after concerned bystanders flagged down a passing police car.

The man was rushed by ambulance to hospital, where he remained in a critical condition for several days. His condition has since improved and he has returned home to continue his recovery.

Police are struggling to explain the incident. They are currently analysing CCTV footage from the tunnel for clues and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

ROADWORKS ‘BADLY HANDLED’ SAYS MP FORCED TO WALK TO WORK AT PARLIAMENT

THE BOROUGH’S newest MP has resorted to walking to the Houses of Parliament every day as recent roadworks have brought Elephant and Castle to a standstill.

Neil Coyle, elected to the Bermondsey and Old Southwark seat in May this year, has had first-hand experience of the traffic chaos in his constituency as Transport for London embarked on multiple projects around the Elephant roundabout earlier this year.

A burst water main on Kennington Park Road last week compounded the gridlock which has been a recurring issue since works to transform the northern roundabout and create the north-south cycle superhighway both started in the area in March.

“TfL have chosen to redevelop the northern roundabout at the Elephant as well as St George's Circus - and parts of Tower Bridge Road,” said Mr Coyle. “All are causing backlogs and delays. Many of the works are needed

but have been badly handled. They affect thousands of people every day including me on the way to parliament - I've taken to walking,” he said.

But Alan Bristow, Director of Road Space Management at TfL, said recent changes to the roadworks layout and traffic signal timings have improved journey times in the last week – burst water mains and kebab shop fires notwithstanding.

“We are working to transform the area around Elephant and Castle to deliver benefits for all road users, but appreciate that this is having an impact on journeys through the area,” said Mr Bristow. “We are doing everything we can to minimise the impact and apologise for any delays these are causing. As the works are completed, traffic will improve and, where we can, we are working hard to finish these improvements as quickly as possible.”

The works on the roundabout are due to be completed next summer and the cycle superhighway will be finished at St George’s Circus next month, Blackfriars Road in October and St George’s Road in November.

BERMONDSEY: A man who threatened a community support officer with a bottle and then caused criminal damage to a police cell has been jailed for four weeks.

Maciej Slawomir Wojcik, of no fixed abode, was found guilty of a Section 4 Public Order offence and of causing criminal damage at Camberwell Magistrates Court on June 27.

Vikki and Dean Brown have been waiting for fourteen agonising months to hear whether their six-year-old son Harvey, who suffers from the ultra-rare disease Morquio, will have the chance to take medication which could help him live a longer, happier life.

Morquio is an inherited illness which affects just 77 children in the UK. An enzyme deficiency means children like Harvey rarely grow to above three foot tall or live beyond their twenties.

As he grows older, the Millwall fan’s condition will gradually deteriorate until he needs full time palliative care.

After a clinical trial, the drug Vimizim was shown to help children like Harvey grow taller and stronger, need fewer operations, walk without mobility aids and live for longer.

Since it was licensed by the European Medicines Agency in April last year, Vikki and Dean have been waiting to hear whether the NHS would pay for the expensive drug to be offered in this country.

The NHS was due to make a decision last week on whether they would fund temporary access to Vimizim while the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), which advises the NHS on the drugs it can afford to offer, prepares a full recommendation for October.

“We sat here waiting for three o’clock to come,” said Vikki, who was heartbroken when she and husband Dean found out the NHS had decided, after months of consultation, not to do

anything until it got the recommendation from NICE. As it could cost around £300,000 to treat one person for a year and will only benefit the small number of people who suffer from the rare disease, the NHS has been delaying a decision on whether to pay for the drug while NICE gathers all the evidence it needs to make a recommendation.

“It’s just dragged on and on and on and we are still no further,” said Dean, 45. “I can’t believe a human being can sit there and make a decision about another human being that you can’t prolong their life because of money,” said the delivery

“It’s cruel to take it away from people,” said Dean. “A vet wouldn’t do that to an animal.

Mourners forced to remove items from shrine after thefts

MOURNERS HAVE been forced to remove sentimental items from a memorial shrine for Tommy Blackmore after the spate of ‘vile’ thefts reported by the News last week continued.

Grieving friends and family members had created a huge tribute to the 20-year-old Bermondsey boy at Queen Elizabeth Street, where Tommy was involved in a fatal incident on June 13.

Hundreds of bouquets of flowers, along with candles, football shirts, boxing gloves, CDs, beers, balloons, cards and flags were all left in the days and weeks following his death.

However, last week it emerged that football shirts and CDs had been taken by thieves. Again this week, footballs, boxing gloves and a large England flag signed by mourners were also stolen.

After the latest thefts, Tommy’s brothers Bradley and Michael had no choice but to urge members of a tribute Facebook page to take anything valuable away from the shrine, for fear that it may also be taken.

Council issues apology for letter sent to family in ‘error’ EXCLUSIVE

THE GRIEVING mother of Tommy Blackmore, the 20-yearold killed after an incident near Tower Bridge last month, was left distraught after receiving a letter mistakenly asking for £17.33 of overpaid housing benefits just six days after his death.

The blunt letter, dated June 19, stated that “because Tommy Blackmore has passed away”, Maureen Blackmore had been overpaid during the previous week.

Tommy’s death on June 13 was callously referred to as a “change of occupancy” and a “change in circumstances” in the letter, which also included a short message of condolence, before quickly moving onto methods of repayment.

It later transpired that Maureen did not actually owe any money to the council, and that the letter had been sent to her in error.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Lib Dems, described the incident as “insensitive” and “threatening.”

She told the News: “The council must urgently sort this out. Not only for this family, who were sent an

insensitive and incorrect letter six days after their son was killed, but for every other bereaved family.

“The council must always put a stop on threatening letters if someone has died and deal with any rent or financial issues in a kinder, more human way.”

Twenty firefighters Motorcyclist hurt battle shop blaze in car collision ELEPHANT AND CASTLE: Twenty firefighters had an early start yesterday morning when a kebab shop in Elephant and Castle went up in flames.

The London Fire Brigade were called to the New Kent Road blaze at around 5.45am, with four engines responding to the scene.

Thirty per cent of the premises, located in a railway arch, was damaged. The building’s extraction system was “completely destroyed”, according to a spokesperson for the LFB. The fire was dealt around two hours later. Firefighters are investigating the cause of the blaze.

Firefighters from Dowgate, Old Kent Road, Lambeth and Peckham fire stations attended the incident.

There were no injuries reported.

BERMONDSEY: A motorcyclist was taken to hospital yesterday morning after he was involved in a collision with a car on Abbey Street in Bermondsey.

The accident occurred at around 9.30am, when the Met Police and the London Ambulance Service were called.

A police spokesperson said that his injuries were “neither lifethreatening nor life-changing” and that the motorcyclist should make a full recovery.

Abbey Street and Druid Street were temporarily closed following the collision, a spokesperson for Transport for London said.

While the closure did cause some traffic congestion, the roads had reopened within an hour, the spokesperson added.

“This can only be explained as a complete error of judgement on the part of an officer, and we will urgently be reviewing our training and processes to ensure something like this cannot happen again.”

In a statement given to the News, Maureen praised the “community spirit” of those who had helped her family since Tommy’s death.

She said: “I would like to thank all my friends and neighbours for their amazing support - especially the families of Kim, Joanne, Maria and Debbie.

“The community spirt has been truly overwhelming, a true testament to the impact Tommy made. I am so proud to call him my son.”

Tommy passed away after an incident in Queen Elizabeth Street on June 13. Police were called at 02.35 and found the Rotherhithe resident “critically injured”. He was rushed to hospital by ambulance but was pronounced dead soon after arrival.

A 28-year-old man, Lloyd Smythe of Tabard Gardens Estate, Borough, has been charged with murder. He has been remanded in custody and will appear at Central Criminal Court on November 29.

Court security guard dies

BLACKFRIARS: The security guard who was attacked last month while escorting a prisoner at Blackfriars Crown Court has died.

Lorraine Barwell, 54, passed away last Friday, after she was allegedly pushed to the ground and stamped on by a prisoner she was accompanying from the courtroom to a security van.

The grandmother’s family chose to turn off her life-support machine after doctors told them she would not survive. They also gave permission for her organs to be donated, which were used to save five lives, it has been reported.

Twenty-two-year-old Humphrey Burke, of no fixed abode, has been charged with grievous bodily harm.

He appeared at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court on July 1 and will appear at the Old Bailey on July 15.

NEW-BORN babies in Southwark have not been vaccinated against Tuberculosis for the last three months because of a nationwide shortage, the News can reveal.

The borough ran out of the BCG (Bacillus Calmette-Guérin) vaccine at the end of March and all babies born since then remain vulnerable to the disease, which was responsible for one in four deaths in the 1800s.

The alarm was raised by a Rotherhithe mum, who contacted the News when she couldn’t get hold of the vaccine anywhere for her five week old baby girl, Arlan.

Lisa Salkeld, 31, says her children are at 'high risk' of contracting TB after two previous cases in her family's past.

After being informed by her health visitor that the BCG vaccine was unavailable, the mother of three approached a private health clinic in desperation. They advised her there was a nationwide shortage, which started at the end of March.

With around 5,000 babies born in the borough every year, the News estimates more than a thousand children may have already gone unvaccinated and by the time the vaccine is made available again, the number could exceed 2,000.

Speaking to the News, a spokesperson for Public Health England confirmed the shortage has since spread Europe-wide and is expected to last well in to next month.

The drug is produced by Statens Serum Institute in Denmark, which has had “manufacturing issues”, according to Public Health England, which is advising all local health authorities to keep a record of the babies who have gone unvaccinated over the last three months.

Lisa, who has to keep her baby girl away from the extended family because of the health risk they now pose, described the situation as “absolutely insane.”

“Most people don’t know how serious it can be,” said Lisa, who remembers her grandmother having TB when she was a girl.

“If you don’t immunise against something like this then you leave a gap and it could lead to an massive outbreak,” she said.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Trust, which is responsible for administering the vaccine in Southwark said a letter has been sent out to all parents with children under twelve months to inform them of the situation.

A new batch of vaccine is expected into the country in August at which time all the parents will be contacted again so their children can be vaccinated.

Although there is a problem with the prevalence of Tuberculosis in London, with the number of cases steadily rising over the last 30 years, the disease can be cured with antibiotics.

TUBERCULOSIS IS a contagious bacterial disease which can affect any part of the body, but most commonly affects the lungs.

This is also the most contagious form, and can be spread through moisture droplets from coughs or sneezes.

Symptoms can include coughing up blood, night sweats and weight loss.

Thankfully these days it can be prevented with a vaccine and cured using antibiotics.

Three thousand Londoners were diagnosed with TB in 2013 in a steady rise in cases in the capital over the last 30 years.

A THOUSAND new flats will be going up at the Elephant and Castle roundabout, according to initial plans revealed by the owners of the shopping centre in an exhibition opening today.

A three tier open-air retail area and a new campus for the London College of Communication (LCC) will also form part of the new ‘town centre’ scheme, which will sit on the site of the current shopping centre and LCC campus.

The first covered retail space in Europe has stood at the heart of the Elephant since it opened in March 1965, but was finally sold to the current owners in November 2013 for £80million.

Delancey, which manages the site on behalf of the DV4 client fund and pension fund asset manager APG, has since remained tight-lipped over their plans for the site while businesses like the Coronet entertainment venue and

independent traders at the shopping centre have voiced concerns about their future.

Today the initial outline plans are going on display within the shopping centre for the first time, in order to gain input and feedback from the local community.

At this early stage the plans include 1,000 flats, which will be for rent to people living and working in London.

It is not clear yet how many of these will be available at social rent levels.

Council leader, Cllr Peter John, previously said he would not support a plan for 1,000 flats on that site put forward by former owners St Modwen in 2011, but the council since clarified this was a totally different scheme and his objection was not simply based on the number of units proposed.

The number of shops on the site will increase as an ‘open air space will be spread over three connected levels’ to be comprised of a ground floor of convenience shops connected to the tube station, a first floor level of high street shops and new restaurants and leisure on the second floor.

There will also be a new Northern Line station entrance and ticket hall and the railway arches will be opened up to create new lines of access to the site.

The initial concept design for the

overall site appears to include three tall towers facing the southern roundabout with no sign of the Coronet to the north - though manager Richard Littman is still waiting to hear if the building, with

its original art deco interior, will be listed.

Jamie Ritblat, on behalf of Delancey, DV4 and APG, said he wanted everyone to visit the exhibition over the next two days and have their say.

“We want people to be at the heart of our proposals for the revitalisation and renewal of the town centre,” he said.

“In that spirit, local feedback is key to ensuring our vision corresponds with that of the local community and wider activities within the regeneration area.

“This public exhibition will show for the first time our emerging plans to deliver a fantastic new town centre at the heart of Elephant and Castle.”

The exhibition is in the upper mall of the shopping centre today from 12noon till 8pm, tomorrow from 9.30am to 5pm and Saturday from 9.30am to 3pm.

THE NEW Ark Academy in Camberwell has been praised by Ofsted inspectors as being a “good school” with “outstanding” leadership and pupil behaviour.

The report said that the school had enjoyed “two very successful years” since it had replaced a struggling academy located on the same site in September 2013.

It said: “The consistently good teaching continues to improve as staff receive outstanding training and support.

Scholars make consistently good progress, which is often better than that seen nationally for the same-aged students.

“Scholars are happy and proud to be part of the academy ‘family’. They feel safe and secure and behave extremely well.”

The report of the Wyndham Road school did, however, include some criticisms. It highlighted a concern that “White British and the most able scholars” were not progressing as well as other pupils. It added: “Occasionally,

teachers’ questions do not make scholars think hard enough or explain their answers in depth. Teachers do not always notice when scholars have completed their work quickly and give them more challenging work.”

However, the majority of the report was overwhelmingly positive, with the principal and her management and teaching team described as “very effective”, “enthusiastic” and “dedicated.”

Lucy Frame, Principal of Ark All Saints Academy, said: “The Ark All Saints family have been working hard over the past two years to ensure that all our scholars get the best start in their secondary education. It is really pleasing to get this recognition, but we will not be complacent.

“I am thankful to our scholars, parents, staff members and governors for their support in making sure that all our scholars are able to fulfil their ambitions of going to a good university and pursuing their career of choice.”

She congratulated the pupils, whom she said “behave extremely well”, adding that “practically all of them stay focused and work hard.”

A BERMONDSEY school for students with “severe and complex” learning disabilities has received a rating of “outstanding” from Ofsted inspectors.

This is the third time in a row that Cherry Garden School, in Macks Road, has received the rating, with the quality of the teaching and the behaviour of the pupils particularly commended.

The report said: “Adults make excellent use of communication aids to remove barriers to pupils’ understanding. The pupils enjoy their learning because it is so well adapted to their individual needs and interests.

“Pupils are relaxed and happy learners. Their behaviour is excellent.

The pupils also make outstanding progress, throughout the school, including early years, in their communication, in development of early literacy and numeracy skills and in their personal development.”

Head teacher Teresa Neary told the News that she was delighted with the “great achievement.” She said: “I am immensely proud of everyone in the whole school community. Our philosophy of always trying to

Malorie out of hospital

PECKHAM: A pregnant woman who lost her baby after a brutal assault by two men in motorbike helmets has been discharged from hospital.

Malorie Bantala, 21, was set upon in Talfourd Place, Peckham, as she walked home on Monday, June 15.

The university graduate was 32 weeks pregnant when the two men pushed her to the ground and continually kicked and stamped on her stomach before they ran off in the direction of Denman Road.

A neighbour called an ambulance but after waiting over an hour, the police cancelled the call and took Malorie to hospital in the back of a squad car.

Despite the best efforts of the hospital team, she tragically lost her baby and was in intensive care for days.

Thankfully she has been discharged from hospital in the last week and is now recovering with her family.

One man was charged in connection with the incident and police are still hunting a second man, believed to be in his twenties.

Controversial Thames Tideway project set to begin construction in 2017

THE CONTROVERSIAL ‘super sewer’ project cleared its final legal hurdle last week and looks set to begin construction in 2017 as planned.

Two judicial reviews, submitted by campaigners opposing the proposed Thames Tideway Tunnel, were rejected in the Court of Appeals.

The project will remove millions of tonnes of untreated sewerage from the river each year but will cause severe disruption for residents in Chambers Wharf in the north of the borough, where 24-hour construction is expected

to take place over seven or eight years.

Anood Al-Samerai, leader of Southwark Lib Dems and councillor for the affected Riverside ward, said the situation was “really frustrating.”

She said: “We haven’t been listened to but we have now set up a community liaison group to ensure that local residents are listened to and that they keep their word on how they go about things during construction.

“They need to be regulated on dust and noise levels, for example. We will make sure that contractors aren’t showing up at 4am and making noise before work, and that they transport as much material as possible by river rather than road. In a way, this is only

the beginning and we’ll be watching them like a hawk.”

Southwark Council announced their intention to submit their own judicial review last year but missed the application deadline.

Environmental groups, including the London Wildlife Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, heralded the rejected appeals as “great news.”

Debbie Leach, Chief Executive of the Waterways charity Thames 21, said: “This is more great news for everyone who cares about having a cleaner Thames here in the heart of London. We all depend on the water in our rivers and

need to protect it whenever we can – this project means that we can look forward to a River Thames we can be truly proud of, that we can use and enjoy safely and with confidence and where fish and wildlife can thrive.”

A Thames Tideway spokesperson said: “After a long and exhaustive process to reach this position, the project team can now focus 100 per cent on bringing the tunnel scheme to fruition.

We look forward to continuing to work with you to achieve this.”

Residents 10 times more likely to have gonorrhea than other boroughs

SOUTHWARK RESIDENTS are more likely to have sexuallytransmitted infections than those in almost any other London borough, according to “very concerning” figures released recently.

andlords across England are being urged to act now to ensure they are ready for new safety laws aimed at saving dozens of lives a year.

The new regulations will make it compulsory for all landlords to fit smoke alarms in rented homes. Under the new laws smoke alarms must be fitted on every floor of the property as well as carbon monoxide alarms in properties which burn solid fuels. Landlords must also check the alarms are working at the start of every new tenancy with potential penalties of up to £5,000 if they don’t comply.

The Chief Fire Officers’ Association (CFOA) campaigned for more than two years for the legislation to be introduced. Working closely with landlords and the main landlord associations and groups it presented key evidence and research into the Government’s national review of the issue.

AN INTERACTIVE map on Southwark Council’s website now allows residents to view and comment on all current planning applications across the borough.

This is the latest innovation as part of a pilot scheme - Southwark Council is undertaking in conjunction with the News - to give a digital offering on top of the press notices, site notices and letters sent out to residents.

Agreed earlier this year by the Department of Local Government and Communities, Southwark is among just a handful of areas to act as a testing ground to increase residents’ access to the planning process.

Already the pilot scheme has involved a new IDOX system, to allow people to register and then get notifications sent to them via email about current and upcoming applications in their neighbourhood. Within weeks of being introduced, the IDOX system has seen an eight per cent increase in people responding.

Southwark interactive maps are already been used by residents to search for any number of things including schools, libraries and recycling facililties to ‘Charles Dickens in Southwark’. The maps can be broken down by post code.

The maps are easy to use by selecting ‘Planning site notices’ from the list under

the side bar heading ‘Show more on the map’, symbols will appear all over the map showing sites where planning applications are currently being considered. The user can then click on any of the symbols to get an overview of the application being made and a link to the full notice, where comments can be made in favour or against the application.

Updated daily to include all applications as they are made, each one will be featured on the map until the 21 day consultation period expires - when they will be automatically removed.

The inclusion of planning applications on Southwark Maps came from the ongoing research the council is taking as part of the pilot. The biggest survey on planning is taking place in Southwark, with 8,000 people who have responded to applications expected to be asked how they want to be consulted.

But the figures are no better elsewhere in the country. Planning is a major issue for most boroughs, but engaging ordinary residents in the process can be difficult at the best of times. Unless an application affects you, your house price or your standard of living, getting involved in what is a rather mundane process is not top of your must do list. For centuries planning applications have been listed in local newspapers like Southwark News and this is something that local people, ministers and the press industry have fought to preserve to ensure transparency. However, everyone, including the local authority, wants to increase accessibility, so people can have a say on what is being built in the borough.

THE NUMBER of Southwark children in care going missing each year continues to rise, according to the latest figures.

A recent report by London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon said the number of looked after children going missing across London was a cause for great concern in the wake of the Rochdale and Rotherham child abuse scandals.

In 2009, nine Southwark children went missing for more than 24 hours in fourteen separate incidents.

The number jumped to 36 children in 2013 who went missing on 168 separate occasions.

Between January and December last year the total went up yet again to 56 children, though the number of incidents was less, at a total of 142.

“These children face a significant risk of harm and are likely to be

exposed to the risk of alcohol and drugs, criminal and sexual exploitation and arrest,” said Ms Pidgeon in her ‘London’s children: missing from care’ report released last month.

Out of the 495 children currently under the care of Southwark Council (down from 550 in 2014), 373 have been placed in a home outside of the borough, with children attempting to return to their family home thought to be one cause behind the missing incidents.

Southwark Liberal Democrat’s spokesperson for children’s services, Cllr James Okosun, described the latest figures as “deeply worrying.”

“This is a complex problem, but the fact that young people are going missing so often is totally unacceptable,” he said.

The Liberal Democrats have put forward a motion to be considered at the next meeting of Southwark’s full

council assembly, calling for tighter monitoring of the situation.

But Cllr Victoria Mills, Southwark’s cabinet member for children and schools, hit back at what she described as “cheap political point scoring.”

“Being in care is often difficult for young people and the main reason why children and young people go missing from care is in attempts to go home,” she said.

"Southwark Council takes its responsibility for the care of our vulnerable children very seriously and receives a weekly report on children missing from care.

“We work with every young person who goes missing to understand the reasons, which is successfully reducing the number of times they run away.

“We are also focusing on rebuilding relationships between young people and their parents to help keep more families together,” she added.

TREES A CROWD House has close call with nature

HERNE HILL is often described as leafy, but Beckwith Road residents found themselves a little too close to nature for comfort last week when a huge tree toppled

onto their house.

The fire brigade were called at around 1.30pm on Friday when the tree uprooted and tipped over, damaging a first floor window.

There were no injuries.

Firefighters made the scene safe and are currently investigating the cause of the incident, which is not believed to be wind-related.

Elephant’s wild new mural AN ELEPHANT and Castle playground wall has been given a touch of Kew Gardens with a new mural of wild flowers.

The artwork, commissioned by Kew’s Grow Wild award, has brightened up the pocket park at Elliott’s Row, originally created by ‘guerrilla’ gardeners Richard and

Lyla Reynolds in 2013. Shropshire artist Sheila Jevons originally won the brief to create the mural but she was then tragically diagnosed with cancer and died earlier this year.

Her family passed on her original designs and these were given to artist Marc Craig, who completed the mural last week.

Landmark trip for German students

BERMONDSEY: German primary school students visited Bermondsey last week, taking in some of south London’s iconic landmarks and spending time with Boutcher School children.

The fifteen boys and girls from Grundschule Godshorn in Langenhagen had a “fantastic time”, according to trip organiser Birgit Naeschke.

She said: “Everyone at Boutcher was so friendly and we visited so many great sites. The weather was also incredible, which we did not expect!”

The group flew in on June 29 and spent their first day meeting their “Boutcher buddies”, before taking a spin on the London Eye. Over the next five days they visited the Tower Bridge Exhibition, met the Mayor of Southwark, took part in music and cookery lessons and played out a tennis tournament with Boutcher students. Last Friday, however, it was time for the students to say auf wiedersehen to their new friends and fly home to Germany.

THE ALBERT McKenzie Committee, who plan to erect a statue of the Bermondsey-born WW1 hero in Tower Bridge Road, visited Belgium last month to secure the support of Flemish authorities.

They visited Zeebrugge harbour, where the nineteen-year-old showed great bravery during a raid in April 1918.

McKenzie and his comrades planned to storm the port’s heavily guarded harbour walls, but after some marines attracted German attention, the group were bombarded with shells and bullets.

Many British troops were killed or withdrew, but the Bermondsey boy kept going and made it to the wall.

When his rifle was shot out of his hands, he had to resort to physical combat. In a letter to his brother, he recalls how he was left with no alternative to “pushing, kicking and kneeing every German who got in the way”, before finally making it to safety.

The hero was subsequently awarded the Victoria Cross, but sadly died of influenza while recovering in hospital in October that year.

Committee chair Paul Keefe, who previously visited the harbour as a special guest of Bruges city council, said he was delighted with the “very successful trip.”

He said: “The authorities in West Flanders have agreed to give us two of the original rings from the Zeebrugge harbour wall. They fully support the project and are very much looking forward to being invited to the unveiling in October and cementing their ties with Bermondsey.”

Former MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Simon Hughes also made

the trip. He too was delighted with the gesture and with the tightening bond between Bermondsey and the Belgium port.

He said: “For the second time the Flemish authorities put out the red carpet and this time finalised the deal to link the Albert McKenzie memorial in Tower Bridge Road with the historic Zeebrugge harbour.

“This will make the memorial something particularly special and help educate people today and generations to come about the heroism of our troops at a crucial stage at the end of the First

World War. We look forward to welcoming the Flemish authorities to Bermondsey later in the year and to ever stronger links in the future.”

The statue, which is currently being built, is expected to be erected later this year. It will stand at the centre of his life in Southwark – between where he was born in Alice Street, where his parents lived in Shorncliffe Road, where he went to school in Webb Street and where he socialised in Decima Street.

Donations are still needed to complete the statue.

UNDER A baking sun, thousands of people enjoyed a celebration of music, food and fun at the Bermondsey Carnival last weekend.

With the temperature in the high twenties, revellers couldn’t have asked for better weather for the big day, with 12,000 residents of all ages packing Southwark Park.

The highpoint of the day was a “homecoming” performance by Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, who delighted the crowd with classic hits including Make Me Smile (Come up and See Me).

Other musical highlights included south London group Nine Below Zero, ultra-cool Jo N’Gala and his Bantu Blues band, and an acoustic set by sixteen-year-old starlet Mancie Baker.

As well as these crowd pleasers there were international dance performances, fairground rides, bouncy castles and food and drink stalls – not to forget the opportunity to get your face on the front page of the Southwark News!

Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Dora Dixon-Fyle, said: “It was great to see so many people from the community out at the Bermondsey Carnival.

Summer events in Southwark are always a real treat for our residents.

I’m sure that everyone that attended

had an amazing time.”

Philip Burkett of Bermondsey Beat, who organised the carnival’s musical entertainment, said: “What an amazing day! The sun shone, the crowds came, the people smiled and the music played. This was another fantastic and successful Bermondsey Carnival and a perfect example of the community working closely with the council to bring Southwark together for a day in one of London’s best parks. It was such an entertaining weekend.

Southwark Park is truly the park with the spark.”

The earthquakes of East Dulwich Grove

I'VE BEEN living on East Dulwich Grove (EDG) for over 20 years now, and in the last twelve months I've been enduring great distress and disturbances caused by newly installed Road Ramp Table (RRT) right opposite the house I live in.

The traffic going over the RRT make all my place vibrate and worst is at night/early mornings when I try to sleep and my bed and me in it shake.

These imposed vibrations occur with every passing of a bus or a heavier vehicle. These are tremors caused by the wheels slamming onto the road surface from RRT. I've been onto the council for twelve months now (since the very first day the RRT was built in July 2014), have made a video with evidence, have contacted local councillor, MPs for Dulwich and Transport, Mayor of London, Ombudsman, and even have a support letter from my GP re distress and insomnia, and nothing.

I was amazed to read in your paper that the people from nearby Melbourne Grove (MG) moan about “heavy and speedy” traffic going through their, in comparison to EDG, pastoral road indeed, and that they‘ve got full support by very same local councillor, your paper, government, got a grant etc. that will probably all lead to closure to the traffic through MG. They have no idea what's heavy traffic and suffering, so privileged ones will get even more privilege while I'm going to continue to endure vibrations in my bed and very soon die from exhaustion and lack of sleep! And who'd care?

Surely these vibrations can’t be good for the houses too.

The residents of MG moan about “heavy traffic” of 15.000 vehicles a week, but I doubt it’s that many as I live nearby MG, use the road to walk and cycle regularly and the traffic is light indeed. I carried out a survey of traffic going through EDG (passing my window and bed) over several days, cars, vans, lorries and buses, at a lower average (not peak-rush-hours), and these are the facts: During 15 minutes it measured 263 vehicles. That is 1052 vehicles per an hour, 25 thousands and 248 vehicles a day, 752 thousands and 440 vehicles per a month. That is over 9 million vehicles a year! Notoriously heavy

News page 5 traffic, now with vibrations, add to this frequent low flying jumbo jets too, and question arises; East Dulwich Grove or East Dulwich Grave!? And this is just one single A busy road of London.

And residents of MG moan about 15,000 of vehicles a week, that’s equal to just a half a day traffic of EDG. So when MG is soon closed for traffic or other measures applied to draw the traffic away, the 15.000 of additional vehicles will all go through EDG. Road Ramp Tables do absolutely nothing to calm or reduce the traffic as those who came up with this bad idea thought that they would. I know I live opposite one, and RRTs are utter waste of precious council's money too. The RRTs also contribute to more air pollution as if vehicles do slow down before a RRT and then naturally accelerate after, the engines create more fumes. RRTs brought to and imposed onto me and the residents of EDG on the top of all the air and noise pollution, the vibrations!

I wish to encourage all residents of EDG to come forward re this issue and for the Southwark Council to rethink and rectify the shortcomings of these RRTs asap.

It’s not just about Melbourne Grove

I HOPE that the residents of Melbourne Grove have not prejudged the solution to the volume and speed of traffic in that road ( Boost for anti rat run campaign Southwark News 2nd July 2015).

There is no doubt that traffic and indeed parking cause problems, but not only in Melbourne Grove. Many of the residential roads in the area, from Townley Road to East Dulwich station suffer in the same way.

The developments on the Dulwich Hospital site will bring many new challenges, but we can all join in the consultation, remain positive and work towards improving things for everyone.

Local businesses need both tube extensions

IN LAST week’s News Campaspe Lloyd-Jacob put forward a good case for the Bakerloo Line extension going via Camberwell.

However there is an equally strong case for the route going via the Old Kent Road, where over the next few years over 12,000, much needed, dwellings, and millions of square feet of commercial space are likely to be developed, the success of which is entirely dependent on improving public transport.

Southwark Chamber of Commerce recently organised a meeting with TFL and made their views very clear to the representatives that in common with Southwark Council’s view, as set out

by Councillor Mark Williams in this week’s Southwark News, the chamber is are strongly in favour of both lines being built as soon as possible. Just building one line runs the additional risk that the other area will be eclipsed and businesses there will suffer.

Everybody knows that South East London is extremely poorly served by the London underground service and even Crossrail 2 going down to Croydon will not help much. Waiting until their proposed date of 2030 whilst they focus on their priority Piccadilly Line is of little conciliation and is far too long, I for one may well be 6 foot under by then!

Can both Bakerloo extensions stack up?

Mark Williams about Labour supporting both Bakerloo line cul de sac extensions had a very important bit missing.

Both cul de sac extensions will not stand up to financial scrutiny, especially as other parts of London want the same money for their tube plans.

Only a loop with one tube train going one way around and the next going the

other way around stands up to the scrutiny that will be needed. This opens up much more for development and means that Nunhead, Peckham, Camberwell and Walworth will each get a tube station, which is the boost these areas need.

Claim your Oystercard money back!

TWELVE YEARS after its creation there are now a staggering number of Oystercards in existence.

The most recent figures show that 45.7 million have been issued, but that more than half of them haven’t been used for at least a year.

Transport for London don’t exactly shout about this, but if you no longer need an Oystercard you can claim back the balance and the deposit. Of course the reason TfL don’t make much of a fuss about these dormant cards is that it is rather convenient to keep hold of your money.

These dormant cards have now created a huge cash pile for TfL which is now over £153 million, and every week the pile of money gets bigger and bigger.

Of course some people have very good reasons for wanting to keep hold of their Oystercards even if they don’t use them very regularly, however most people if given the chance would want their money back. This is especially the case since the roll out of contactless payment across the whole TfL network, providing a real alternative to Oyster.

It is time the Mayor and TfL were far more active in informing passengers about this issue. In the meantime if you want to claim your money back the advice is to take your card to a Tube station ticket office (where they still exist!) or alternatively call TfL Customer Services on 0343 222 1234.

TB is an issue for us again today

O

LDER RESIDENTS may remember as children that the war and its aftermath brought a tragic rise in TB to the community in London.

I remember as a child in the early sixties that there was a lot of stigma attached to ‘TB’ or Pulmonary Tuberculosis.

Whispered debates took place in the homes of former sufferers on whether it was safe to drink from their cups, even if they had been treated and completely cured.

Even now, there is less awareness about TB than there should be. Perhaps this is partly because historically the disease was associated with poor housing, homelessness, bad diet and poverty. But, as I learned at a recent London Assembly Health Committee meeting, anyone who has a ‘challenged’ immune system -from illness, harsh medical treatments or even old age - can find themselves affected.

Children are no longer routinely given the BCG vaccine – older readers will still have their distinctive scar– because TB is no longer considered a universal threat.

Only young people living in higherincidence areas are now vaccinated. This might in part be why awareness of the disease has diminished.

In London, while over 85% of TB cases occur in people who have come from or had contact with other countries in the world where the disease is prevalent, 15% occur in people with no overseas links. It is still a disease indigenous to the British population. Doctors explained that many members of the community carry the disease in a latent form in their systems. If they are well housed, fed and otherwise healthy then the disease isn’t expressed and they aren’t contagious, but it can emerge unexpectedly if their circumstances become difficult.

TB is easily treated – although the medication must be taken for a short while and can have unpleasant side effects - a full recovery is the usual outcome.

London currently has a higher incidence of the disease than other world cities such as New York, and we heard about some of the ways this can be reduced.

Destigmatising TB is one of the first steps to tackling it. The second must be increasing awareness. Everyone should understand that any persistent cough should be checked out and if for any reason you are offered a health screening or an X-ray then take it, because you will be helping the whole community as well as yourself and your family. * EXCLUSIVE:’Newborns not given TB vaccine for 3 months due to nationwide shortage’ ... see story on page 8

Bacharach’s back

FOR THOSE of a certain age the music of Burt Bacharch was the soundtrack to their 1960s, when some of the greatest female singers of the era gave his and Hal David’s songs life: Dusty telling us I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself; Aretha urging us to Say A Little Prayer, and Dionne Warwick promising to Walk On By, even Cilla was allowed to ask Alfie what’s it all about.

Now revered and sanctified by songwriters of the 21st century Bacharach’s music is being given new life in What’s It All About?

Bacharach Re-Imagined, where his songbook is given an exciting new interpretation with Kyle Riabko’s thrillingly original musical arrangement.

Kyle, a Canadian musician from Saskatchewan, is preparing for the show but took time to talk to me. I wanted to know how he got into music at such a young age. ‘I grew up among an incredible community of musicians who were very encouraging to young musicians - I was 10 when I first starting playing around town,’ he begins.

with my guitar and jam with whoever was around that week…It was there that I realised the power of music.’

Like most guitarists Lyle was influenced by BB King, Hendrix and Muddy Waters: ‘The first couple of years as a musician were mostly me copying those guys,’ he admits. ‘As a singer, I gravitated towards soul — James Brown, Sam Cooke, Otis Redding. And then of course there were the singer songwriters — Paul Simon, Harry Nilsson, The Beatles. I still consider those areas to be the foundation of my musical vocabulary.’

But all those seem the other end of the spectrum from Bacharach’s easy listening vibe. I asked how he came to Bacharach's music. After a pause he says, ‘There’s really nothing quite like it. Bacharach’s writing is entirely distinct and unique, and technically it’s quite rebellious.’ I nodded in agreement. ‘Some of the choices he has made as a composer go against all of the ‘rules’ of pop writing, and for that reason I actually think of him as a punk rocker!’ I’m not sure if Burt sees himself in that way but I defer to Mr Riabko’s musical nous.

Bacharach at a Los Angeles recording studio, and was moved to create a series of demos, reinterpreting Bacharach’s classic songs. Over the ensuing months, he took the demos to Bacharach who gave his blessing to What’s It All About?

Were you nervous when you got Bacharach to listen to what you had done? ‘Absolutely! When I took the first demo to his house and pressed play, my palms were as sweaty as they’ve ever been. But luckily, he took to the idea very quickly and has been nothing but supportive since.’

It all bodes well, I tell him, as does a great run of the show in New York. How did that feel? ‘The New York run was an absolute joy.

It's a very special feeling to see a show go from rattling around inside your brain to being in front of an audience,’ says a man who is obviously on a roll. ‘It was amazing to play in front of an audience that ranged from those who knew and loved Burt’s music to those who weren’t familiar at all. You really got a sense of the power of his songs — the way they can timelessly reach across generations.’

THE ASYLUM THAT CHANGED THE LIVES OF YOUNG ‘UNFORTUNATES’

THE WORD ‘asylum’ does not generally evoke positive thoughts, instead sparking images of horror films and scary stories, creepy corridors and echoing screams.

But this cannot be said for the Old Kent Road Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, which for 176 years provided hope and support for the forgotten children of London, writes Joey Millar...

Founded in 1792, the school devoted itself to helping children who were otherwise shunned and given up on by the education system. These “unfortunates” were often thought to be intellectually deficient, resulting in a life working menial jobs and social exclusion. In extreme circumstances, these children were seen as embarrassments to the human race, with some radical eugenics advising a ban on deaf and mute people marrying each other, in a cruel attempt to weed out the conditions.

The school in Old Kent Road aimed to change all this. Reverend John Townsend helped to found the school after meeting a deaf and mute child in his parish. He was stunned by the boy’s intellect despite his condition and outraged that his mother was forced to send him to Edinburgh to be suitably educated at a specialist (and expensive) academy.

The school, funded by generous donors including members of the royal family, accepted just half a dozen students in its first year. However, before long the number of children clamouring for a chance to learn grew and grew. He took on new teachers,

including Joseph Watson, and moved the school from its first home in Grange Road to a “handsome brick building” in the Old Kent Road. Here, they had the space and facilities to help up to 200 children reach their potential.

Watson, who would go on to become headmaster, was adamant that deaf and mute children should be treated the same as anyone else in the classroom.

He said: “Persons born deaf are, in fact, neither depressed below, nor raised above, the general scale of human nature, as regards their dispositions and powers, either of body or mind.”

He also discouraged the learning of sign language, which helped communication between deaf and mute people but not with others. Lipreading was preferred, and he emphasised “the power and use of language - not a language of signs peculiar to themselves, but the common language of the country to which they belong, and which is spoken and written by those around them.”

A book with 4000 illustrations was created, helping the children write and identify common words. While still referred to as “inmates” and

“unfortunates” in contemporary documents, these deaf and mute children were treated more fairly than ever before.

This helped the children progress “from a dark and dreary state of ignorance” to become more integrated members of society. As well as writing and lip-reading, they were taught skills such as mechanics and design, providing them with an opportunities for real careers. Arnold George, who attended the asylum in the mid-1800s, for example, went on to work as part of the team that tailored for King Edward VII. John P Gloyn, another student during the mid-19th century, set up in business as a mathematical instrument maker – an unimaginable fate for the capital’s deaf and mute children before the school’s founding.

However, as the school became more popular, and the application list for limited spaces grew, criticisms mounted. John Harrison Curtis, an aurist (an ear doctor), slammed the policy of accepting children to the school not based on need or the severity of their condition but on a vote between board members.

He also accused the school of failing to properly push for the treatment of deafness, instead admitting students with minor ear ailments that could potentially be fixed - children he felt were being unnecessarily “doomed to perpetual silence and hopeless despair”. He advised the asylum to open a medical wing, where deafness could be investigated and treated. The school management rejected this proposal.

Dejected, he said: “It is remarkable how very common has been the error of considering a child once deaf always deaf and consequently of abandoning all attempts at relief.”

Nonetheless, the school’s popularity continued into the 20th century and it became increasingly clear that the Old Kent Road site was becoming too small. The building, once surrounded by green spaces and clear air, was becoming more and more hemmed in by the industrial landscape.

In 1902, most pupils moved to a new site by the sea in Margate, where the Royal School for Deaf Children still remains. The Old Kent Road school was taken over by the London County Council, who opened a small academy teaching physically disabled students on the ground floor and continued teaching a smaller number of deaf students upstairs.

Academic techniques developed and technology advanced, with deaf children in the school’s later years benefiting from an interactive screen which showed how loudly they were talking.

The school continued in this form until 1968, when it was finally closed for good. 176 years after it was founded, the school had served its purpose. Deaf and mute children, once doomed to a life of frustration and contempt, were now presented with a once-unimaginable range of prospects.

While the Old Kent Road site is now closed, the pioneering institute’s influence is reflected in every school or business today that sees potential, not futility, in deaf or mute people.

YOU CAN always judge a restaurant by its chicken salad. I took this theory, dressed it up and carried it with me to an Argentine steak joint where I’m pleased to report the humble gem lettuce well and truly held its own against a 500 gram rib eye, writes Laura Burgoine...

Just across Tower Bridge, in St Katharine Docks, a Buenos Aires buzz and waterside dining awaits – with a price tag far more affordable than one of the yachts parked out front. Mini-chain CAU has twelve restaurants across England, all aimed at delivering the “cosmopolitan sophistication” and “irresistibly chaotic energy” of the Argentine capital to London diners.

Fortunately none of the chaotic energy has translated to this chic, modern eatery. I visited Argentina in 2010 and I’m still waiting for the waiter to bring me my Malbec.

Service at CAU, however, is seamless. The waiters are friendly, efficient and attentive and the atmosphere within the spacious venue is modern and relaxed.

CAU’s menu is simple but inviting, combining Italian and Spanish inspired comfort food and steak variations from straight up steak to burgers and sandwiches. As a chicken salad connoisseur –a daily dietary staple some might deem banal but I’m going to argue is just loyal - I put the grilled chicken salad to the test. The marinated chicken breast and little gem lettuce was given an interesting twist with blue cheese, crunchy sweet potato crisps and finished with spring onions and mustard vinaigrette. It was flavourful, simple and satisfying. I’d been advised to leave room for dessert, so a mocktail (the CAU cooler, which is essentially just garnished juice) and a salad were an ideal pairing. At this point I give you full permission to call me banal.

It was truly a feast fit for a protein-conscious king; the steak was polished off with a side of roasted mushrooms with aji molido and garlic and thin cut chips.

pudding, Churros and Cornflake sundaes are among some of the offerings. Ignoring the cultural culinary choices, I was lured by the

novelty of a chocolate brownie accompanied by toasted marshmallows and ice-cream. It didn’t disappoint; more things in life should come with melting marshmallows. My fellow diner selected a more traditional dish in the dulce de leche pancakes topped with ice-cream and traditional Argentine caramel sauce, which he complimented highly in finishing the entire thing. The proof is in the pudding.

You don’t need a cash cow to indulge at CAU. Whether you’re in the mood for Malbec or mocktails, chicken or cow – they’ve got you covered.

The 26-year-old last fought in February 2014, when he defeated Michael Mooney on points at the York Hall, Bethnal Green.

Southwark teams shine at London youth games finals

HUNDREDS OF youngsters from Southwark did the borough proud at Europe’s largest annual youth sports event at the weekend.

Competing at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games finals at Crystal Palace, Southwark won gold in the women’s basketball for the fourth time in five years and triumphed in the men’s hockey for the first time in decades.

They also took silver in the tennis and cycling competitions.

In front a passionate crowd on Saturday night, Southwark’s women basketball team had too much for Hackney, winning 43-30 in the gold medal match.

Jackson Gibbons: “It’s our fourth time in five years. We are very humbled. Last year we lost to Newham, they were better than us last year. But the girls came back re-energized.

“They wanted to come back and win the trophy. They came back with a lot of motivation and passion. The standard was higher than ever this year and there

were a lot of girls who played with the right spirit. Next year, we go again and everyone starts with zero points. We’ll take nothing for granted.”

There was a nail-biting finish in the men’s hockey final as Southwark beat Bromley 6-5 on penalties to win gold.

For team manager Julie Ferrett it was a sweet moment in her twentieth year in the role.

She said: “I’m delighted, no words can actually describe how I feel. The support I’ve had and everything has been great.

I’ve had some of the players since they were aged seven but now I’ve got to say goodbye to them because they’re too old but this has just made my twentieth year.

“I kept saying I wanted to give up and this year I said I’ve had enough now and I was going to go, but now I can’t. How can you after this? I’m just so delighted - I’ve got tears in my eyes. It’s all been worth it after twenty years.”

Following eight months of competitions between over 100,000 young Londoners representing 33 boroughs across 31 sports, the borough placed joint fourteenth overall with Enfield in the Jubilee Trophy standings.

British 100m record holder Dina Asher-Smith and Rugby World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi were among the former London Youth Games competitors who attended at the weekend, sharing the responsibility of lighting the flame at Thursday’s opening ceremony.

Asher-Smith, who competed for Bromley in 2010, said: “The atmosphere is great and everyone is buzzing with excitement. The London Youth Games was such a great experience for me when I took part and the way it continues to grow and give young people from London the opportunity to compete is great for British sport.”

Maggie ‘The Machine’ Alphonsi is one of England’s greatest ever rugby players winning several Grand Slams and the World Cup in 2014. She competed for Enfield at the London Youth Games.

Alphonsi said: “The London Youth Games is an amazing event. I am so happy to have been here today and to be a patron of the Games. I took part in 1999 and it’s really inspiring to see the

Smith takes Stansfeld coaching role

STEVE SMITH has been appointed as the new Stansfeld assistant manager for the upcoming season.

Smith, who turned out for Cray Wanderers, Greenwich Borough and Barking FC in his playing days, also has a wealth of coaching experience.

That includes stints at Beauwater, Erith Town and most recently working with the youth team at Welling United.

He has also worked with the seniors at Swanley Town and in Charlton FC community schemes.

CLAPHAM SCHOOL WINS LYCAMOBILE CUP BELLEVILLE PRIMARY School in Clapham narrowly failed to achieve a historic double in the first ever Lycamobile Cup Finals Day, held at the Kia Oval last month.

The local school, who boast an excellent cricketing pedigree and have won a number of trophies in past years, were crowned victors in the girls’ competition but lost out in the boys’ to Cleve’s School in Weybridge, coming in second.

The competition, which has been running throughout south London and Surrey over the course of the summer – gave over 4,500 children from eighteen different boroughs (including Lambeth and Surrey) the chance to be crowned local champions and win the right to play in the final – on the hallowed turf of the Kia Oval.

Competitions took part in all regions of the area covered by the Surrey Cricket Foundation, from the London Borough of Lambeth in the north to Waverley in the south and Tandridge in east Surrey across to Surrey Heath in the west of the county.

Each region staged a Finals Day of its own, with the Lambeth Finals Day held

at the Kennington Park Astroturf at the end of May – with the children in attendance inspired by the presence of attendance of Surrey fast bowler Chris Tremlett.

Finals Day saw twelve schools travel to Kennington to battle for the overall title.

The teams initially met in a round robin competition, with the top schools reaching a high pressure knockout stage.

Eventually, Belleville and Cleve’s were crowned the winners, being presented with trophies and medals for all players, capping off an incredible experience with a victory.

Surrey CCC Cricket Development Officer Kim Price organised the day and said: “The sound of cheers, laughter and encouragement was a sure sign that fun was had by all.

“We are extremely grateful that these children had the opportunity of playing on the outfield – a memory that will stay with them for a very long time! We’d also like to thank Lycamobile for giving us the opportunity to run a competition that allowed so many local children to compete and experience cricket at an early age.”

THE SAME words keep cropping up when you speak with David Connolly.

Discipline. Respect. Hard work.

Professionalism.

For a player who chose a path unfamiliar to most UK footballers when he joined Feyenoord at 20 and went on to play for almost two decades across England’s four divisions, it’s little surprise he determines them as the keystones for longevity and success.

He might also have mentioned mental resilience.

Signed by Arie Haan in 1997 after a prolific spell at Watford, he found himself cut adrift at Feyenoord when Haan’s replacement Leo Beenhakker didn’t want him even though he had only recently signed a five-year deal.

He made 41 appearances and scored nine goals for Ireland and not long after being hailed the next big thing in a country not blessed with an abundance of goalscorers he was sent off in a play-off defeat against Belgium that meant missing out on Euro 2000.

But at least Connolly made his own career choices and whether the decisions he took were right or wrong the word ‘regret’ is unlikely to figure in his vocabulary.

All the highs and the disappointments were stored away to be drawn on later and now the 38-year-old wants to contribute to bringing through the next group of young players at Millwall, passing on the benefit of all that experience on and off the pitch.

“I’ve been at a lot of clubs, played under a lot of managers and been a professional for almost twenty years,” he said.

“I think you have to use your experience from everywhere.

Going to Holland at a young age, I was in at the deep end. I’d like all the young lads to be in digs, for instance. It’s expensive but you do grow up. I was in digs as a young lad so I know it can help you to move to the next stage when you have to go it alone.

“You have all these challenges when you’re growing up, you have setbacks and injuries. All these things feed into making you the player you are, as well as all those people who have coached you.

“All of these things build character. Missing a penalty and having the strength to take the next one, playing on the big stage.

That’s a mental toughness that’s needed to play for Millwall and become a good pro.

“I feel I can help these players, instil them with discipline and the good habits that you need to become a pro. But ultimately it’s in their hands to take it on board and do it themselves.”

He has played for a number of robust characters such as Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy but

Connolly cites a former Lions boss as having had a deep effect on his early career.

“I was very lucky,” he explains.

“Kenny Jackett was my youth team manager (at Watford) and later ended up as a Millwall manager.

He was a great influence on me in terms of discipline, the professionalism needed to make it, acting with respect, all the attributes that you need both off the pitch and on it.”

Like Neil Harris’ assistant Dave Livermore, who spent time in Holland in May at Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar, Connolly is known to be studious about his coaching career. He impressed Millwall’s current boss during his interview with his breadth of knowledge and his coaching philosophy.

Having enjoyed one of the most profitable periods of his career on loan at Excelsior after falling out of favour with Beenhakker, and then returning to England to play for West Ham, Wigan and Sunderland, a m o n g others, he was back in Holland this summer taking in an U18 tournament. He will now attempt to meld the best of both football cultures and apply the alchemy at Eltham College.

“In Holland they love the English grit and mentality, which they don’t have as much of. In England they want the more technical approach, so if you can get a bit of both you have a really good chance.

“It’s not necessarily a total football philosophy - you have to be effective as well. But no doubt you have to try to play football and produce players that will be effective for Millwall’s first team.

That’s the ultimate aim, to contribute to the future of the club.

“We’ll be playing a similar formation to the first team and trying to get players into the firstteam squad to have a career at the club.”

Livermore spoke of the standards Dutch clubs set for their players and coaches and it is on the finer details that Connolly and Larry McAvoy will build the base on which they hope Millwall’s future will be secure.

“With the 18s Larry and I are looking at even the little things.

Eating lunch as a team, everybody staying together, being respectful around the place, doing our jobs properly, no phones, no one being late, all the little things that accumulate to being a good person and being a good pro.

“Millwall have always brought through good players and obviously now that’s more important than ever. I’m really pleased to be able to give a hand in doing that.”

He said: “I’m excited. Obviously I’ve known Scott for a long time. He’s a tiny bit older than me and he was in the first team (at Wimbledon) before I was and then he moved on.

“We’ve kept in touch. Having been at Dagenham before, I’ve come across teams from Millwall, so I know quite a few people and I know the standards that are set here and the standard of player that’s at the club. So I’m looking forward to coming in.

“Neil Harris has moved people up from the youth system and the club have had to bring new faces in. They are people of good stature. David Connolly, for instance, was a fantastic international player for Ireland who I played with at Southampton and another reason to come here because I knew him and we had a good relationship.”

MILLWALL HAVE confirmed former goalkeeper Brian Horne as the next host of the club’s Legends Tour on Saturday, September 5 at 12pm.

Horne came through Millwall’s youth set-up, making his debut in 1986.

He was part of the side that won promotion from the old Second Division for the first time in the club’s history and helped them to tenth place in the First Division in 1988-89.

Millwall were relegated the following season, however.

Horne was also an England U21 international and went on to play for Middlesbrough, Stoke, Portsmouth and Hartlepool.

“Of course I worked under some good coaches at Dagenham, did a little bit at Tottenham at the end of the season and worked with some good coaches there. John McDermott particularly had some really interesting ideas.”

FORMER MILLWALL midfielder Richard Chaplow this week signed a deal with League One rivals Doncaster Rovers.

Chaplow spent two seasons at Millwall after signing from Southampton but never really nailed down a first-team place.

The 30-year-old played a total of 31 games for the Lions, scoring just once, and spent the latter part of last season on loan at Mick McCarthy’s Ipswich Town.

He will face his former team-mates for the first time with his new club when Paul Dickov’s side visit The Den in the league on Saturday, October 10.

“I like playing attacking football - get the ball down and pass it through the lines and at the end of the day I want to create chances, I want to score goals.

“I look at Guardiola for a style of play and I look at Mourinho in how he manages teams, and tactically he’s one of the very best.

“If you can get somewhere near to that then that’s your aim.”

King agreed a one-year deal when he joined the Lions from Crystal Palace last August but his future at the club had been in doubt.

delicate age, not all of the players under his watch are guaranteed to succeed, so moulding more rounded individuals is a key component of the job.

“With the U16s you need to come in and work hard, you need to try and get something out of every session because you’ve got a year to prove yourself, to get your scholarship.

“You have to balance that with also doing your schoolwork because we all know that football’s a very tough business and unfortunately the majority of players that come into it don’t get a professional contract.

“So you need to have some education to fall back on and maybe give yourself the opportunity to go to university and pursue that side of things.

“Things change very quickly at this age, physically and mentally they’re changing. You can think someone is completely outside of things at the start of the season and they can develop really quickly and come to the fore.

And someone you think is a dead cert, they drop by the wayside.”

Whichever way fate swings, Perry hopes to offer a guiding hand.

LIONS ON FIRE IN PORTUGAL

Squad return tomorrow after ‘fantastic’ trip

MILLWALL RETURN from their five-day training camp in Portugal tomorrow, and boss Neil

Harris has said everything has gone to plan.

The squad have continued with the schedule they began at Calmont Road, starting with running sessions at 8am, football drills at 10.30 and

gym work in the evening.

Millwall play their first-preseason friendlies next week.

“So far everything has been fantastic. It has been extremely hot, ridiculously so at times, but the boys have got on with things and completely embraced and enjoyed it all,” Harris told the club’s website.

“It has been an opportunity for the squad to spend time together, which has been really key.

“The physical work they have done has been outstanding. We played a practice match on Tuesday, which was extremely competitive and had a real good tempo to it. After that we also did some more running so the boys have been pushed really hard.”

Carlos Edwards and Jamie Philpot, who are still recovering from longterm injuries, didn’t travel to Portugal.

Edwards is currently out of contract but Harris has said he could earn a new deal if he proves his fitness. Club physio Bobby Bacic says he is not far away from playing his first game

since last September.

“The planning with Carlos is to have his first match after four weeks of full training so he has trained with the youth team,” Bacic explained.

“Jamie is progressing well after his knee operation and has already joined in a few training sessions with the youth team. He will look to join the main group on our return next week.”

Paris Cowan-Hall, meanwhile, also stayed at home as he recovers from a calf strain. The attacker has been unlucky with injuries since he joined the Lions from Wycombe last January and is set to miss a number of pre-season friendlies.

Bacic said: “Paris has picked up a small calf strain on the last day of running at the training ground.

“Paris' previous injuries have all been due to collisions: twice in matches and once in full contact training. This one, however, was during a pure running session so he will be doing extra conditioning and strength work over the next few weeks before he rejoins the main group.”

BYRON WEBSTER ‘HAS FUTURE AT THE DEN’

BYRON WEBSTER has received assurances that he has a future at Millwall.

The club signed Tony Craig last week and young centre-back Sid Nelson also penned a new deal earlier in the summer.

But a source close to the player says Webster had a positive meeting with Harris before the squad left for Portugal to continue their pre-season preparations.

Webster agreed a two-year deal when he joined from Yeovil Town last summer.

The former Doncaster and Northampton defender was brought to the club by previous boss Ian Holloway but he played just fourteen times in a turbulent season for the Lions.

The 28-year-old spent the latter part of last season on loan back at his former club.

Nelson started in nine of Harris’ ten games in charge partnering Jos Hooiveld, who was on loan at Southampton, in the centre of defence.

Craig, in his fourth spell with the Lions after joining from Championship side Brentford, is expected to be an automatic choice and could even be named club captain.

Harris has said that he wants two options for each position in the side and the source said that with a hectic campaign ahead with no international break there will be opportunities for Webster to stake his claim for first-team football.

The senior side begin their preseason friendly programme next Tuesday with a trip to Bromley before they travel to AFC Wimbledon the following Saturday.
