don’t stop bakerloo line extension

josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council’s leader has accused the government of “playing politics” over the extension of the Bakerloo Line.

In a joint article with Lewisham’s Mayor Damien Egan, Cllr Peter John raised the alarm that the capital could be entering a deep recession without funding for “shovel-ready” infrastructure projects.

The Bakerloo extension from Elephant and Castle to the Old Kent Road and onto Lewisham is a key part of the council’s ambitions to build 20,000 new homes in the area surrounding the Old Kent Road.

Writing for the website, OnLondon, Cllr John said central government failing to fund the ambitious project would scupper Southwark’s and Lewisham’s economic recovery from Covid.

“Boxed in by a lack of government funding and powers to raise finance itself, London is currently charting an unenviable course, set to enter a major recession with plenty of shovelready projects yet unable to get digging,” he said.

“In taking this approach to London, the government is playing with fire… The Bakerloo Line extension is a perfect example of the sort

of shovel-ready scheme that government should be engaging with TfL on getting built.”

A joint campaign by Southwark and Lewisham councils urging residents to back the extension of the line has been signed by thousands.

TfL’s finances have been ravaged by the coronavirus pandemic, and its emergency

budget released last week has thrown a number of projects into doubt over a lack of funding.

Among them are an upgraded ferry crossing between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf. The plan was itself a cheaper option, after a cycling and walking bridge was junked over its massive £600m estimated cost.

Liberal Democrat mayoral candidate stands down

Benita was selected as the Lib Dem candidate in 2018 for the planned May 2020 vote that was pushed back to May 2021 due to COVID-19.

In a statement issued on Monday morning, she said: “It has been a privilege to campaign as the Lib Dem candidate for the past eighteen months.

“I am immensely grateful to all the fabulous party members, volunteers and friends who supported my campaign and shared this experience with me.

Her statement echoed Rory Stewart’s announcement earlier this year that he was quitting the race at the beginning of May, saying he couldn’t ask his volunteers to continue campaigning for another twelve months.

Describing Benita as a ‘fantastic candidate

who has worked incredibly hard’, Ben Sims, the London Liberal Democrats’ chair, said carrying on is ‘a lot to ask anyone’.

Acting party leader, Ed Davey, added: “I’ve known Siobhan for several years and she is an incredibly inspiring woman.

“Her campaign for a greener, fairer London helped us double our vote in London in the last election.

“I’m very sorry to see Siobhan stand down at this time, but she will continue to be a huge asset to our party.”

The loss of another high profile competitor means next year’s vote increasingly looks like a clear run for Labour incumbent Sadiq Khan.

He will face the Conservatives’ Shaun Bailey, the Green’s Sian Berry and a new Lib Dem candidate - with the internal selection process for Benita’s successor already underway.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

82-year-old Rex blasts out special Guy’s tribute

Cancer patient releases ‘Thank You’

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk An 82-year-old pensioner being treated for cancer at Guy’s has written a charity single to thank nurses and doctors working during the coronavirus pandemic.

Afrobeats singer, Rex Martey, released the single on Tuesday, called ‘Thank You’, with all the proceeds going to the Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity.

In the song, Rex writes from the view of a patient with Covid, thanking all the people in the hospital who helped to treat him.

The musician is no stranger to being treated in hospital, having been a patient at Guy’s since 1983.

His condition is currently stable, but he has dialysis three times a week. “I have been lucky enough to not catch coronavirus, but know how hard the staff have worked to make sure that vulnerable dialysis patients stay safe,”

he said.

“This song is my way of repaying some of the gratitude I feel towards those who have cared for me.

“That’s everyone, from the doctors to the cleaners. I can’t say thank you to everyone in person, so I will say it in song.”

Rex, who lives in Sydenham, worked on the single at home with his wife, who sang backing vocals.

The pair recorded it on a phone, before sending it to an engineer to be produced. The pensioner was featured in the News last year, after scoring a record deal aged 81.

His debut album, African Touring Holiday, was released after more than sixty years of performing in pubs and clubs.

It too included a single dedicated to doctors and nurses - the song ‘My Louisa’, dedicated to Louisa Fleure, a lead urology nurse at Guy’s.

A Dulwich Hamlet WIN as stadium approved

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich Hamlet FC’s future at Champion Hill has been secured after plans for its new stadium were approved by Southwark Council’s planning committee on Monday night.

In a statement issued shortly after the meeting, DHFC said: “The club are delighted to announce that the Southwark Council planning committee has approved our joint planning application with Meadow Residential.

“The result secures the club’s home and future in East Dulwich for the next 125 years.”

The decision comes after a long fight, although Hamlet’s supporter base has grown exponentially in the last few years, the plans were not without controversy – or vocal opposition.

Last week, in the run up to the vote, a mystery campaigner circulated leaflets claiming that if approved the club would be charging local schools £45,000 per year to use Green Dale’s Astroturf – half a million over the next ten years.

The club responded angrily to the claims, branding them ‘disappointing’, ‘misinformation’ and ‘a lie’.

Ben Clasper, the club’s chairman, added: “Online and on paper a claim was made stating we will ‘charge schools’.

“It wasn’t true and needed to be refuted.

This could have been avoided if the club had simply been asked.

“School use is free and we have reconfirmed this with the Charter Trust this week.”

Although the leaflets directed readers to the Friends of Green Dale website,

In a response shared with the News last Friday, a spokesperson for the campaigners said: “Friends of Green Dale have seen the club’s denial with regard to charging the Charter Schools for access to the proposed stadium.

“It is noted that the business plan submitted to Southwark planning portal includes charges against the Charter school of £40,000 to £50,000 per annum.

“The leaflet correctly cites the charges submitted to the planning portal by DHFC.” Another group, Friends of Dog Kennel Hill Wood, took to Twitter to blast the club’s approach, saying promises to keep the Astroturf free for schools appeared nowhere in the formal planning

documents.

“Calling local people ‘liars’ and discussing legal action for taking time to look through the 400+ documents and bringing important buried data to the surface is not what is expected of a club whose core values are all about community,” they argued.

Getting the greenlight for its new stadium is a huge boost to the club after a rollercoaster few years and has been greeted with delight by its ‘rabble’ of fans.

Before burying the hatchet and reaching an agreement about the club’s future, Dulwich Hamlet and Meadow had become locked in a bitter dispute that saw the club exiled from its own ground and even told it could no longer use its own logo.

Council leader Peter John even became

embroiled in the drama when Southwark Council was forced to spend around £13,000 of taxpayers’ money investigating a series of tweets he made about Meadow, including one where he asked: “is this the most stupid development company in history or simply the nastiest?”

It took intervention from then sports minister Tracy Crouch to get Meadow and DHFC to finally reach an agreement before the planning documents were submitted in 2019.

As part of the deal Southwark Council agreed not to compulsorily purchase the Champion Hill site as long as the terms of the club’s new lease were fair.

On Monday night, in front of the committee, Cllr John spoke against the development, coming out in favour of

protecting Greendale.

Describing the issue as ‘finely balanced’, along with Cllr Sarah King he argued that Greendale and its Astroturf – designated metropolitan open land - should be protected.

In response to the committee’s decision, Cllrs John and King told the News: “We are disappointed that planning committee has approved this application.

“Although we are long term supporters of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club, we are concerned about the loss of metropolitan open land at Green Dale and the impact this will have on our community.

“During lockdown it became clearer than ever before how important open spaces are, especially in a ward like ours with no major parks, so we are disappointed that this application means less green space for everyone to enjoy.

“We now call on Meadow to keep their promises to the community and ensure a stable future for DHFC at Champion Hill, and wish the club every success when the National League South returns.”

The planning committee meeting, roughly five hours long, eventually weighed in favour of the application for the new, 4,000 capacity stadium and 219 homes on the site with a vote of five in favour and two against.

It will be a huge boon to the club which has had a hole blown in its finances due to the pandemic suspending its season early.

During the pandemic, chairman Ben Clasper told the News the club’s financial forecast had turned from £100,000 in the black to £200,000 in the red since March.

In the meantime, its supporters will be celebrating. Club director Tom Cullen tweeted: “I honestly couldn’t be prouder of everyone that fought for this club. We won.”

Man is charged with Rotherhithe woman’s manslaughter

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been charged with the manslaughter of Rotherhithe woman Stella Frew after a collision last week.

Ms Frew, who grew up in Rotherhithe, was fatally injured following a traffic collision in Sutton’s Tonfield Road at around 6pm on Friday, July 24.

Passers-by and the emergency services gave first aid, but the 38-year-old was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

James Martin, 26, was charged on Tuesday with Stella’s manslaughter.

Martin, of Peeks Brook Lane, Crawley, was due to appear at Croydon Magistrates Court on Tuesday morning.

Police had appealed for the public’s help in piecing together the events of Friday afternoon.

An inquest was opened into the death of Marcus Malachi by Southwark Coroner’s Court earlier this month.

Mr Malachi, 27, had been a patient at Lambeth Hospital before going missing.

His death was reported on May 10.

“This gentleman’s death was reported on the tenth of May 2020, and the police indicated they had a call from the Lambeth Hospital, as a patient had gone missing from the mental health ward,” said senior coroner Andrew Harris.

“This occurred at Tottenham Court Road and the coroner for that area requested a transfer to my jurisdiction as circumstances seemed to indicate that he was under the care of a hospital under Section Two of the Mental Health Act. “We have conducted an autopsy and that has confirmed provisionally that he died of multiple injuries as a result of being run over by a train.”

The court will hear reports from the British Transport Police and the South London and Maudsley Trust as

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The owner of a business that has traded in Walworth since the 1950s says new parking restrictions have left him struggling with the ‘stress and pain’ of having to fork out for hundreds of pounds worth of penalty fines – despite being an NHS supplier.

Mark Lynne, who runs Walworth Road’s Lynne’s Electrics, has been left with multiple £65 fines for using a loading bay right outside his shop after the council announced it was suspending all parking bays to help with social distancing during the pandemic.

Over the last few months traders have been given a limited window for deliveries, either overnight or in the early morning, as a temporary measure in response to the high COVID-19 rates in the borough.

But although the restrictions are meant to only be in force until July 31 (this Friday), the News has been told by a wellplaced source that this is very likely to be extended despite public reassurances to business owners. Even if promises are kept, Mark says the damage has already been done to his business. He believes longer lasting measures that have seen

Walworth’s side streets closed to traffic will continue to leave traders like him struggling.

As the News has reported, Walworth has now been designated a ‘low emission neighbourhood’ with side streets closed to traffic to help encourage safer walking and cycling. The move has been loved and loathed by a community left divided over the widespread changes.

Mark told the News: “In some cases the ticket I get costs as much as the goods being dropped off. It’s affected my company and the customers who come here including those who are disabled and need to park.

“Social distancing has changed from two metres down to one and it’s a 6ft pavement.

“The whole scheme is lovely if you’re a cyclist but it is not real life. I’m not against cycling lanes but what the council has imposed is disproportionate.

“I have been driving into the shop during lockdown to keep our emergency deliveries going and supplies to the NHS. “In that time new cycle ways have taken up 50 per cent of the road, roads have been blocked off, and the traffic is just sent somewhere else or sits in gridlock on Walworth Road.

I cannot constantly be fighting to exist as a small business.

“We’re allowed to load up late at night and until 10am and after that we can’t do any emergency deliveries.”

The News has also seen a letter rejecting a challenge to a penalty charge notice from a disabled customer, who had a badge on display, which reads: “We have noted you are unable to carry heavy load, to which you also have a disabled badge supporting this. Although we sympathise, however, clear photographic evidence shows your vehicle parked to a sign that states the bay is suspended.”

Lynne’s Electrical has its own delivery van that can typically load up six or seven bulky items including washing machines and fridge freezers.

They have continued delivering goods to people in need of repairs or replacements during the pandemic.

“I’ve been advised those in favour of the new parking restrictions to use cargo bikes for deliveries,” Mark says, incredulously.

“How can you pedal seven large electrical items across south London as far as Croydon on a cargo bike and deliver them while keeping them safe and secure?”

Although Southwark Council was unable to respond to the News’ request for comment before going to press, this newspaper has seen correspondence from the cabinet member Richard Livingstone, who holds the transport and environment portfolio at Tooley Street, stressing the temporary parking bay measures were one of several ‘difficult decisions’ after Southwark recorded one of the highest

Covid infection rates. In these emails he also confirms the restrictions will be lifted

by Friday. The News has seen council correspondence claiming otherwise.

An initial decision to fully close the bays was amended in May to between 10am and 7pm after feedback and in light of peak shopping times being ‘highest risk’ to residents attempting to pass each other on the pavement.

As the News has reported, sweeping changes to road layouts elsewhere in Southwark – including closing Rye Lane to vehicles – have left traders furious.

This week, Vally Wilson, the owner of Peckham Park Road’s Rex Launderette, contacted the News to say that the shop was closing after 60 years trading, saying passing trade had halved since bollards were placed outside to stop cars from parking.

“We relied very much on customers who came from far areas bringing their washing loads in cars.

“Southwark council’s unjust traffic, parking and anti-car use policies is destroying many local and high street businesses, economy and jobs,” Vally told the News.

“It is complete myth that the real economy can be sustained by bicycles, busses or walking.

“I have been in retail trade for 40 years and can say that implementation of severe traffic policies has destroyed thousands of businesses across our 24-hour city.

“I am very grateful to thank all our loyal customers who have supported and used our launderette for many years.”

Only 14 COVID patients at Guy’s

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk We are on a journey of recovery from coronavirus, according to the top boss of Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals.

The trust which runs Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals said it had only fourteen inpatients with confirmed or suspected Covid, compared to a peak of more than 220 in early April.

The hospitals are currently looking after four suspected or confirmed coronavirus patients in intensive care – compared to around 100 at any given time during April.

“The biggest challenge for our organisation now is to treat patients who were unable to be safely treated during the COVID -19 peak,” said Dr Ian Abbs, the trust’s chief exec in a report last week.

The hospital’s plan is to “cautiously” continue restarting services, after much non-urgent work was suspended.

“It is clear that … we are on a journey to recovery,” he said, “And it will be through the dedication and inspiring work we do collectively that we are able to begin our recovery from the impacts of this global pandemic.”

Managerial officials are also pushing ahead with plans to merge the trust with the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust, an idea first approved in January.

The merger would see the Royal Brompton move several services to St Thomas’ Westminster Bridge site. An “accelerated” timescale hopes to see the deal done by January 2021.

Separately, the statue of Guy’s founder, Thomas Guy, still proves controversial, with the Trust pledging “further work” to understand the historical facts surrounding Guy’s wealth.

The statue, on the Guy’s campus of King’s College London, was removed from public view earlier this year over claims that he made his money through the slave trade.

The statue is owned by the Guy’s and St Thomas’ charity, while the land on which it sits is owned by King’s College London.

However, no decision has been made about the long-term future of the statue, nor that of Robert Clayton outside St Thomas’ Hospital.

No Rotherhithe bridge and now TfL say no ferry

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Councillors have hit out at TfL’s decision to officially pause an upgraded ferry crossing from Rotherhithe to Canary Wharf.

The ferry option is now deemed to be unaffordable – despite original plans for a walking and cycling bridge being shelved over cost, too.

In board papers to be considered by TfL this week, the crossing is labelled “currently unaffordable in the context of other walking and cycling priorities.”

Council officials will meet with the deputy mayor for transport, Heidi Alexander, this week to argue the case for the scheme, despite TfL’s perilous finances.

Southwark Council’s Johnson Situ said the move was “deeply frustrating.”

“Transport for London is facing a huge and unprecedented financial challenge in the wake of the

Coronavirus pandemic and it’s clear difficult decisions will have to be made,” he said.

“However, the Rotherhithe to Canada Water [sic] crossing would provide

a vital new route over the Thames in an under-served part of London and would mean more people can choose walking and cycling.

Council warns that discarded batteries can starts fires

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A female hamster with her two newborns were among seven found abandoned in Crystal Palace Park.

A passerby made the sad discovery on July 7, and took the animals home and reported the finding to the RSPCA. The hamsters were found inside two cages. They were taken to Putney Animal Hospital but sadly one did not survive.

The RSPCA is now appealing for help in its investigation with Inspector Harriet Daliday urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward.

Lithium-ion batteries can start fires when incorrectly disposed.

They should not be placed in household bins. Most can be recycled, with supermarkets often having a disposal point in store.

Alternatively, they can be taken to a local household reuse and recycling centre to be turned into something new.

Hot coals are another cause of preventable fires seen in summer.

They should be covered with sand and water first to ensure they are completely cold before being added to the general waste bin. This should take around two days.

Electrical items, such as toasters, should be recycled. To find out how, visit the council’s website as there are often separate collections for these types of goods.

Gavin Graveson, executive vice president at Veolia UK and Ireland says: “Items that generate heat and electricity can easily combust in the back of waste vehicles or at our recycling and waste facilities. This is extremely dangerous and can result in fires.

“People also forget that batteries and electrical items can be recycled.

“We should be doing everything we can to capture these materials to preserve our precious resources and protect the green economy.

“When residents are unsure of what can and can’t be put in their household recycling and waste bins, they should play it safe and check their council website.”

Councillor Richard Livingstone, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for environment, transport and the climate emergency, said: “Bin lorry fires are dangerous and avoidable, and we all have a role to play in preventing them.

“Both something as small as an AA battery and something as obvious as glowing barbecue coals can cause untold damage and, more importantly, put refuse staff at risk.

“We want to thank everyone who is doing their best to reduce, reuse and recycle and ask that we all remember to recycle batteries – most supermarkets take them – and dispose of electrical items and coal responsibly.”

The charity is now warning it faces an even worse situation this year following the easing of lockdown and the impact of Coronavirus. So far it is receiving around 40 calls a day.

The rescued animals are now at the Middlesex North West and South Hertfordshire branch of the RSPCA and will be rehomed at a later date.

Shane Williams is holding the summer camp every Thursday in Peckham Rye Park at 6pm.

Anyone aged five to sixteen, and their parent or guardian, are welcome to join an hour of fitness and games including football, running, team sports, netball and circuits. Southwark residents can attend for free.

Shane says he’s been over the moon with the response to his classes since featuring in the News, and hopes anyone worried about going on holiday or unable to travel will consider joining the class.

Borough sees a gradual reopening of its libraries

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Libraries are reopening across Southwark with safety measures in place to protect staff and visitors from Coronavirus.

Nunhead and Canada Water libraries are open already with a reduced service, with more openings planned in the coming weeks.

Along with screens, masks and hand sanitiser, visitors are asked to order their books ahead of visiting. Books will also be cleaned and quarantined before exchanging hands.

However the toilets, cafes, studying areas, printing services and public computers are currently closed until further notice. Cllr Rebecca Lury, cabinet member for culture, leisure, equalities and communities, said: “We are delighted to announce the gradual reopening of our library buildings and

the careful rollout of services that are dear to the communities they serve.

“Safety for all remains a priority, so we have introduced Perspex screens at service counters, hand sanitiser and floor markings.

“We are also cleaning and quarantining books and ask that visitors order their books ahead of their visit, observe social distancing guidelines and follow any advice offered by signs and staff in our libraries.

“While our online library events have been hugely popular, helping many families through the lockdown, we are happy to be inviting people back, in person.”

MUM: ‘sick Troll spread lies about my daughter’s cancer’

josh@southwarknews.co.uk A sick troll spread a hoax that a five-year-old girl with cancer had died, forcing her mother to ring her elderly grandparents to tell them it wasn’t true.

The family of Isla Caton, who is battling neuroblastoma, resorted to live videos to disprove the lie, posted through Twitter and WhatsApp. The fake statement claimed a well-known supporter of Isla’s had confirmed she had passed away, and spread after some mistakenly paid tribute to the toddler.

Mum Nicola, 41, is demanding police action over vile tweets targeting her daughter, posted on Monday.

“How dare someone use my child, who has fought for years for everything, and think it’s okay to write such an evil thing,” she said.

“It was spreading like wildfire on WhatsApp. I shouldn’t have to ring my mum, who’s 72, telling her not to pick up the phone, because

it’s not true.

“I’m not leaving it, I want something done.

As a parent, a mum, I don’t know how people can say stuff like that. They don’t know the effect they have.”

Isla is well-known among Southwark’s Millwall fans, despite being a Hammers fan, as many Lions supporters have put aside their rivalries to fundraise for the toddler.

The family, of Hornchurch, Essex, spent three months in Spain while Isla was undergoing an experimental antibody treatment to tackle her tumours, which was not available on the NHS. There are no standard treatments available for the aggressive cancer, which primarily targets under-fives, in the UK after relapse. It means families must look to clinical trials.

But money started to run out, and the coronavirus lockdown prevented fundraising from going ahead.

“It’s really sad but I always knew that day would come,” said Nicola. “Everything had to be cancelled because of coronavirus.”

More knife crime as lockdown lifts

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Three people were stabbed in a spate of separate attacks across Southwark last weekend as fears of escalating violence at the end of lockdown are realised.

On Friday night (July 24), a man was found stabbed in both arms and suffering severe blood loss on Old Kent Road at around 11.40pm.

In an incident not believed to be related, around an hour later, another man was found stabbed in Falmouth Road’s Whitworth House, Elephant & Castle, after a call to paramedics. The male victim was attacked in the arm and leg. It is believed he was attacked by ‘unknown assailants’. Neither victims were in critical conditions.

Meanwhile in Nunhead, around the same time that night (Saturday, July 25), the London Ambulance Service contacted police after treating a female victim – age unknown – who survived a stabbing in Ivydale Road. A suspect has since been taken into custody.

Days earlier on Thursday, July 23, police had scrambled to Harlescott Road near Nunhead Cemetery after reports of a group of men, armed with knives, fighting

in broad daylight at 6.10pm near Ivydale School. A man, in his late teens, had been stabbed in the confrontation and was hospitalised. Two people were arrested and a Section 60 was put in place until 7am the following day.

During lockdown recorded crimes fell dramatically – with overall offences dropping by 19.5 per cent between February and March – though some offences, including domestic violence, markedly rose.

The number of referrals to King’s College Hospital’s safeguarding children team due to stabbings halved between January and March compared with the previous three months – dropping from an average of 20 to 10 per quarter.

Another key concern – and stretch on the police’s resources – is the proliferation of unlicensed music events all over London.

Since the now notorious incident in Brixton’s Angell Town, where missiles were thrown at officers, the Met has taken more than 530 calls about illegal raves; 86 of which were all on one day alone, Saturday, July 18. Officers are now responding to around 23 every single day. Parties broken up in Southwark include regular gatherings in Dulwich’s Dawson’s Hill and Burgess Park in the early hours.

“We’ll still carry on fundraising to get Isla to America for the vaccine,” said Nicola. “We still need to raise more than £100,000 for the vaccine. Obviously it’s difficult because you still can’t have huge crowds. We’ve just got to carry on as best we can.”

‘ten of southwark’s buildings may still have grenfell-style cladding’

“We have a cross-council team dedicated to ensuring local landlords and building owners fulfil their safety obligations with regards to cladding, and are now working closely with the MHCLG to see which buildings may be eligible for government funding so

they can get on with work as soon as possible.”

Nearby Tower Hamlets and Greenwich have more than twenty buildings which carry ACM cladding and have yet to be remediated. Along with Salford, northwest England, this is the highest in the country.

Last month, a senior government official said it was “clearly unacceptable” that ACM cladding remained on buildings after Grenfell.

Jeremy Pocklington, the permanent secretary of MHCLG, told a parliamentary committee: “At the heart of the problem, too many building owners have not stepped up to their responsibility to make sure that these buildings are safe for leaseholders and for residents.”

Mr Mills, the brigade’s deputy commissioner, also asked Trading Standards to investigate those selling balcony BBQ products. The BBQ, which retails for around £50, is designed to ‘clip on’ to a balcony railing, despite the brigade’s claims of the risks this could pose to other inhabitants of flats.

“Put this BBQ up on the balcony railing and have a BBQ party on your own balcony,” states an ad for the product. “Now everyone without a garden can have a BBQ.” The retailers Amazon and Menkind had already vowed to remove balcony BBQs from sale after the Deptford fire in response to concerns raised by the fire brigade.

People having BBQs on balconies using various products have been linked to 600 fires in London in just three years, including a devastating block fire in Deptford which left residents homeless.

The fire on Deptford’s Childers Street in May, was caused by a BBQ being disposed of in a plastic bag on a balcony. A hundred people were evacuated.

£100M hospital unit closed over fire safety concerns

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk King’s College Hospital’s £100 million critical care department has been closed after major fire safety concerns were discovered just three months after opening.

The hospital declared a major incident last Wednesday and moved all patients out the building after issues raised by its own inspectors and London Fire Brigade.

The News understands the latest fire safety problems highlighted the issue of containment; with any outbreak of fire believed likely to spread rapidly due to the type of exterior panelling used.

It is the latest setback for the beleaguered new build, which only partially opened in April, and it is not the first time it has been branded unsafe. In November 2018 the News reported that “significant remedial work” had to be completed

Nunhead property council said was ‘unfit’ now being let

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A council building which officials call a serious health and safety risk and unfit for housing is being advertised for £600pcm a room.

The property on St Mary’s Road in Nunhead was previously a careers service for young people.

The service was moved in November 2018 because the building “posed serious health and safety risks” for staff and users.

Officials decided they could not convert the semi-detached Victorian house into modern housing because it is “unfit for any operational purpose including affordable housing” and would require too much investment.

The council is using the services of private property guardianship company Global Guardians to license space in the building for £600pcm.

Property guardians do not have the same rights as tenants, and the government says it does not “endorse or encourage” the use of guardianships as housing tenure.

However, guardianships, while often less secure than tenancies, can provide housing in disused public buildings at below-market rents in expensive areas.

This also allows buildings to be secured. Southwark Council is in moves to sell its freehold of the building, after a Cabinet meeting earlier this month.

“We have looked into whether this is a building we can bring into housing use, and I think we’ve concluded that is neither affordable nor necessarily sensible because of the type of building this is,” said Southwark’s Cllr Victoria Mills at a meeting proposing the sale.

The council was asked for its policy on residential guardians but did not respond before going to press.

The CEO of Global Guardians, Stuart Woolgar, said the company could not comment on specific properties, and said the News was “stirring up unnecessary and unfounded drama.”

“Every property where we provide protection by occupation, everything we do as an organisation, is carried out in accordance with British Standard BS8584:2015 Vacant Property Protection and current health and safety regulations,” he said.

“All properties we manage adhere to a strict, ongoing, compliance regime and no property guardian is at risk of any form of health and safety issue, whilst providing security for the property.”

Nunhead’s elvis is all shook up with jack petchey award Aaron Arthur, known as Elvis from Nunhead, has been given a Jack Petchey Award after raising more than £2,000 to help feed vulnerable residents during the Coronavirus pandemic.

Peckham care home hosts one-minute Olympic events Greenhive Care Home in Peckham, run by not-for-profit- care provider Anchor Hanover, held a sports tournament throughout last week to coincide with the cancelled Olympics opening ceremony.

All 114 care homes run by the provider hosted their own tournaments consisting of daily one-minute sporting challenges in basketball, cricket, football, table tennis, golf and rugby; using equipment specially adapted for people living with dementia.

“Our residents have been disappointed that many sports events have been understandably cancelled

due to the pandemic, so we decided to hold our own sporting events instead,” said manager Yanique King.

“It’s a great opportunity to exercise our bodies and minds, doing meaningful activities while also having fun!”

Resident Dev Persuad, aged 90, said before the tournament kicked off: “It’s a shame the Olympics and many other sports have been cancelled but Anchor’s Summer of Sport will be great fun.

“I can’t wait to take part because I love sports. I used to be a sports reporter and loved presenting – sporting events were always the highlight of my weekends”.

The King from SE15 has been entertaining residents with regular fundraising performances including during the Thursday clap for carers events in lockdown.

Since May he has collected £2,237 from the generous community for the Salvation Army’s weekly meal deliveries for shielding residents.

Aaron was nominated for the special award by fellow Nunhead local Katie Worthington after a call out from the Jack Petchey Foundation for young people who have made a difference to their community, no matter how big or small, during the crisis.

He was presented with his award at the Westminster House Youth Club in Nunhead Grove on Tuesday evening.

Sir Jack Petchey, now 95 years old, set up his foundation to help inspire young people and has, so far, given away 133 million of his self-made fortune so far.

In a message to Aaron from the foundation explained why Aaron was a worthy winner: “Here at the Jack Petchey Foundation, we are so proud of all the young people that are leading the way and going the ‘extra mile’ to help individuals and their community in this difficult time.

“This award scheme was set up to recognise acts of kindness and selfless behaviour at this time of need.

Rachel Rumbol and Kiosk MM Factory have been announced as the joint winners of Elephant and Castle’s ‘local hero awards’, set up by community project Elephant Says Hi.

Nearly 150 people cast their votes for those who were an essential part of the COVID-19 community response.

Having set up Neighbours in Need, Rachel Rumbol has made over 1,700 hot meals for local residents and is still going. The project was crowdfunded to deliver hot meals to those in need together with local café Louie Louie.

She has also supported Meals for the NHS, providing over 4,000 meals for NHS workers unable to access shops and cafes during lockdown.

One nomination received by the organisers explained: “She has shown incredible leadership during this time, offering her skills as a chef to help support the whole community,

Joint winner Kiok MM factory, part of Mercato Metropolitano, remained open throughout the lockdown, with Abramo Tezgazzi praised by many nominees for knowing many customers by name, being happy to chat and lend a friendly ear. It has also been involved in collaborations with the Mayors Fund for London, Pembroke House, Age UK and Lendlease.

s the coronavirus lockdown has been eased in recent weeks, for some people life is starting to feel a little bit more normal again. But sadly the pandemic and its impacts have not gone away, and for many this summer will continue to bring significant challenges.

Despite protests from Labour, the Tories have decided to remove the protection from eviction for tenants in the private rented sector. Many private renters have faced financial challenges during the coronavirus lockdown, often due to gaps and omissions in the government’s financial support for workers.

For private tenants who have never previously been in arrears, many of whom have worked tremendously hard during the lockdown to help

many families if, just as things are starting to return to normal, they find that they have no childcare as their child’s nursery has had to close.

So many people have played their part in stopping the spread of coronavirus for the past five months, often making huge personal sacrifices to do so. As we move into this new phase and the virus continues to cause problems, the Tories are increasingly exposed as not having a detailed, flexible plan to ensure support where it is needed.

If ever there was a moment for strong, clear leadership and a government which is there for everyone, it is now. It is clear that Boris Johnson and the Tories are simply not delivering, and the consequences are being felt keenly across our communities.

Evening Primrose oil is widely known as an over the counter remedy – with many claims made for efficacy including helping to ease muscle weakness, useful for skin disorders like eczema and acne; it is also used in cosmetics as a moisturiser for dry skin.

There are several varieties of Evening Primrose available for the garden ranging in height from eight inches to over thirty-six inches (one metre). The smaller type - Oenothera missouriensis

I am not surprised by reading this about Harris Academy at Peckham. It seems things have not changed there from since 2009/2010. My son had and still has SEN. Whist at Harris, from year seven I had to fight to keep him in the school. There were constant fixed term exclusions of three, five, even ten days, and being told to keep him at home without no letter to back it up. They tried to ‘manage move’ him to Walworth Academy, unsuccessful on their part. As parents, if you are not clued up to fight for your child’s right to be educated, they will to as they please whether it be legal or not.

Jubilant Dulwich Hamlet supporters have come up with an unlikely fan favourite: Cllr Martin Seaton, chair of Southwark’s planning committee.

Plans for a new stadium for the team were approved at a marathon session of the committee on Monday night, much to the delight of many fans.

They have suggested, perhaps not entirely seriously, that a stand should be named in the new stadium after Seaton, who chaired the meeting.

Others have gone further, having changed their social media profile pictures to Seaton’s picture. “Is a Seaton statue pushing it?” asked one, while another effusive supporter has even suggested a chant in his name.

The best park?

A competition is raging online among sarf Londoners: which of their parks are the best.

A dedicated online competition is seeking to find which park south of the river is the king of kings among London parks south of the river.

Some of Southwark’s entries have already been discounted: Burgess Park lost in the first round, and Southwark Park was bested by Crystal Palace in the second round.

Road changes should aim to work for everyone

A

s we return to the ‘new normal’ it increasingly looks like recurring spikes in new Coronavirus cases are something we will have to learn to deal with, using the ‘whack-a-mole’ approach, as PM Boris Johnson puts it.

Social distancing, face coverings, hand hygiene, and all the extra measures we are now used to are here to stay for the long haul.

In light of the terrible impact the virus has had on busy inner city areas like Southwark it is completely right and proper that the council does everything in its power to make residents’ safety a priority.

But another priority is making sure companies that fulfil vital services are still able to operate, and that any changes to help pedestrians and cyclists are proportionate.

The council has confirmed that the parking bay suspension is a temporary measure until the end of this week so sources’ claims - and correspondence backing them up - that this could be extended to an uncertain date is a huge blow and risks destroying trust between traders and the council.

Southwark Council had also changed its

original plans to completely suspend the spaces and, instead, give some leeway for pick-ups and delivery overnight and early in the morning so is showing some flexibility - but is it enough?

For some types of business this seems reasonable. But what if a customer unable to leave the house, due to shielding, suddenly has a broken fridge freezer?

How can a company whose whole business model is based on responding to urgent needs operate without being able to load up and deliver during the day?

And, when only working on the most urgent cases including NHS clients during the peak of the pandemic, is it fair or proportionate that this business be fined for using a parking bay necessary for it to function?

Emergency Covid-19 legislation has been used to make quick, sweeping changes. In the height of the pandemic businesses, while very much under threat, did have access to financial support.

As this dries up it is even more important that we find a way to protect traders and keep our high streets going.

Changes need to work for everyone – not just walkers and cyclists. And it also needs to be done properly.

in Southwark The Space Between

Embracing lockdown and keeping those creative juices flowing, David Hunter and Caroline Kay have written, performed and recorded a new musical all from the safety of their own homes, writes Rosie O’Connell.

At just under 15 minutes long, it’s surprising what a punch you can pack in to such short space of time.

Manu Delago bangs the Drum for Björk and mountain peaks If you get your first drum kit when you’are just two years old there is a good chance that you will always be involved with music in some way, so it is no surprise that Rotherhithe’s Manu Delago grew up to be a musician and composer, writes Michael Holland.

Yes, he did try different instruments like the accordion, piano and guitar but always came back to the drums. ‘More specifically,’ says Manu, ‘I’m a Handpan player, percussionist, drummer, and I write music that I regularly perform around the world.’

In fact, he has played more than 1000 concerts on six continents, which means Manu pretty much has the whole world covered.

‘I love creating new music and trying to do things that haven’t been done before,’ he says eagerly. ‘I’m in the lucky position that I get to play a wide variety of styles including electronic music, contemporary classical, jazz, pop, hiphop, rock and ambient music.

I’m also a nature and mountain lover so try to combine those things with music as

much as possible.’

Drummers have historically had a reputation for crazy antics that shorten their lives so I did not flinch when Manu said, ‘A couple of years ago I took my ensemble on a 5-day-long hike where we recorded an album and film called ‘Parasol Peak’ on various altitudes in the Alps. It was a fairly extreme project but probably the most rewarding thing I’ve ever done.’

More down to earth highlights have been,

‘Amazing collaborations with artists like Björk, Anoushka Shankar, The Cinematic Orchestra and Ólafur Arnalds.’

But behind the excitement of travel and playing your music with top musicians, Manu reveals that until he was 17 he wanted to become a professional footballer, which eventually led to schedule clashes of concerts and games. ‘Since life as musician looked a bit more easy-going,’ says the man who scales mountain ranges, ‘I decided to

quit football… But I still miss playing.’

Covid-19’s impact has meant that Manu has had more than 40 concerts cancelled or postponed. ‘It’s not only a big loss of income but also a major change in lifestyle; I usually spend six months per year touring around the world, but right now I haven’t left Rotherhithe in six weeks… And I don’t think it’ll change very soon - Concerts will be one of the last things to return.’

But with a lockdown in place the jetsetting percussionist is not pacing the floor like a caged animal: ‘I use the time to do things that I usually don’t have enough time for: Reading, cooking, exercise, some social media, online performances and also writing new music.’

On a philosophical level Manu Delago knows the world will be a different place, and that there will be a ‘new normal’, but his hopes are that ‘Covid-19 has a positive impact on our climate and how we treat the planet in the future.’

Telling the story of a couple forced to spend lockdown apart ‘The Space Between’ utilises the technology that has kept so many of us in contact with those closest to us these past few months.

At different places physically, emotionally and in life in general, we watch the pair work through the space between them.

Having never met in real life, Hunter and Kay relied solely on voice notes and texts to communicate their ideas, completing the writing portion in just three weeks. the finished minimusical itself takes place entirely through screen-recorded Zoom or Facetime calls or Whatsapp messages.

The play comprises of three musical numbers that honestly wouldn’t seem out of place on any West End stage. ‘Her’ and ‘Him’ each sing contradictory, emotional, soul-searching solos giving us insight into each character’s thoughts, with both Hunter and Kay offering brilliant performances.

The piece culminates in the joint emotional rollercoaster of a final song which highlights the lack of communication and listening between the couple until they seem to finally start to understand each other.

With the arts at risk due to financial struggles and news of theatres being forced to close their doors permanently it is wonderful to see such a great example that theatre can be created anywhere and shown anywhere – stage or no stage.

Southwark’s Black Citizens in Wartime

Una Marson and Learie Constantine in Calling the West Indies Southwark historian Stephen Bourne has been writing black British history books for thirty years. His best-known is Black Poppies – Britain’s Black Community and the Great War (The History Press) for which he received the 2015 Southwark Arts Forum award for Literature. Two

years later London South Bank University awarded Stephen an Honorary Fellowship for his work on diversity. His latest book is Under Fire - Black Britain in Wartime 193945 in which he pays tribute to black ‘front-liners’ and servicemen and women from Britain, Africa and the Caribbean. Under Fire includes a number of Southwark citizens. We asked Stephen to tell us about some of them.

I

am often asked why I became interested in history and the reason is simple. I was influenced by the older women in my family.

When I was a teenager in the 1970s, I spent hours listening to my workingclass grandmother and great-aunts talk about their lives. I was especially

intrigued by their memories of life on the home front in London during the Second World War. One of the older women in my family was Aunt Esther, a black Londoner who had been adopted into my family by my white great grandmother in 1941 during the London Blitz. My interest in documenting the experiences of black citizens on the home front and in the armed services began with the stories Aunt Esther told me. While recording my aunt’s memories, I began searching for other stories of black people in wartime Britain, and I discovered many who have been ignored by historians in the numerous books and documentaries produced about Britain and the Second World War. Despite evidence of racism black people contributed to the war effort where they could. In Britain, they were under fire with the rest of the population in places.

Many volunteered as civilian defence workers, such as firewatchers (including Aunt Esther), air-raid wardens, firemen, stretcher-bearers, first aid workers and mobile canteen personnel. These were activities crucial to the home front.

Factory workers, foresters and nurses were recruited from across the Empire in places like Africa and the Caribbean.

For some it may seem strange that black people would take part in a war

alongside white people who did not treat them with equality, but the need to win the war, and avoid a Nazi occupation, outweighed this. Sam King, a Jamaican who joined the Royal Air Force in 1944, said: “I don’t think the British Empire was perfect, but it was better than Nazi Germany.” After the war, Sam settled in Southwark and became Mayor of the borough in 1983.

Dr Harold Moody (1882-1947) was one of the most influential black leaders in Britain. He came here from Jamaica and settled in Peckham. In 1931 Dr Moody was the founder of the League of Coloured Peoples. This was one of the first organisations to confront racism in Britain. He was also an important community leader during the war and in 1944 he was one of the first on the scene of the terrible V2 bomb attack in New Cross. Dr Moody worked all through the night to give medical aid to the survivors.

Several others who joined the League in the 1930s also gave outstanding service during the war and they include the Barbadian Dr Cecil Belfield Clarke.

His surgery at 112 Newington Causeway remained open all through the intensive bombing of the Elephant and Castle, even though most of the neighbouring buildings were destroyed. Then there was the Camberwell resident George A.

Roberts, a Trinidadian who had served in the First World War. He worked tirelessly and bravely all through the Second World War as a fireman. He was also responsible for organising the Discussion and Education Groups of the wartime National Fire Service. In 1941 his portrait was painted by the war artist Norman Hepple. There was also Una Marson, a Jamaican feminist and writer, who lived in Brunswick Park in Camberwell, and joined the staff of the BBC in 1939. During the war she produced and presented a popular radio series called Calling the West Indies.

In 1941 Una invited Dr Belfield Clarke to make a broadcast in Calling the West Indies but he had to decline. In a letter to Una he explained that all the buildings in Newington Causeway had gone except his surgery. One complete side of the building was missing. Rain was getting in. His gas and water supplies had been disconnected. In spite of this, Dr Belfield Clarke never closed his surgery. In fact, he remained there until he retired in 1965.

Under Fire also includes the wartime memories of Cerene Palmer and several other African and Caribbean residents of Southwark. For them, life on the home front across the Empire was no different from that of the British Isles. Cerene

remembers VE Day as a big celebration: “Everybody in Jamaica wanted to know that Hitler was really dead. They wanted to make sure it was him. On VE Day we waved a branch of a tree and listened to calypsos. The whole island took part.”

By John Kelly at the Den johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WENT into their shortened summer break with a spring in their step after the biggest league win of Gary Rowett’s reign.

Despite little riding on the game, Rowett had demanded a win. It was a bonus that it came with a league debut for right-back James Brown, 22, and senior debuts for Hayden Muller, 18, and nineteen-year-old Tyler Burey.

The biggest cheer of the afternoon was for Jiri Skalak, when he scored his first Millwall goal on his 33rd appearance over two difficult seasons. It might be too little, too late for the Czech Republic international.

The hope is that Connor Mahoney is not in the same boat. Few have ever doubted his talent. Against Huddersfield he took setpieces with his left and right foot. He scored a brilliant goal and provided two assists.

The second was superbly fashioned, as he was probably the only player on the park that could have picked out the pass for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to finish for the fourth.

Brown played well, before Muller came on for him. Winger Burey was introduced late on and almost had a dream debut, but couldn’t force the ball over the line in added-time.

Those youngsters could find themselves more involved next season. There will be more games over a shorter campaign.

Millwall can’t really afford to greatly increase their first-team squad size, so players from the academy could have a big role to play.

Billy Mitchell came on and there’s currently a space in the squad for him with Jayson Molumby now back at Brighton.

Rowett took a look at youth but Shaun Williams, 33, showed he has no intention of shuffling off stage. He was excellent and he could be an important part of Millwall’s midfield next season.

There were lots of positives. Jake Cooper scored his third goal of the season. He’ll be targeting much more next season.

Expectations have been raised. It will be interesting to see how Rowett and the club go about meeting them.

Ireland international opens up after his eleven-year spell with Millwall comes to an end EXCLUSIVE

It’s a familiar image for Lions fans in SE16, where O’Brien netted 25 of his 44 goals in a Millwall shirt.

But there’s a difference. O’Brien is in the opponents’ side, his first permanent team after eleven seasons with Millwall, whom he joined as a fifteen-year-old.

Each one of those goals was celebrated exuberantly, as he raced towards the stands to share the moment with Lions fans.

His last goal for the club was the winner against Brentford last December.

So, would he celebrate if he scored against the team he played 226 times for in a stadium he said he would always see as home?

“Well...it would be a very, very weird moment in my career,” O’Brien said when speaking to the News after his departure last week.

“But I would definitely not celebrate, one million per cent I would not celebrate. I’d just hold my hands up and probably just walk back to the centre circle to get ready to go again.

“I’d have the utmost respect against

Millwall if playing against them in the future.”

It’s little surprise O’Brien, 26, feels like that about a club that he has previously spoken about as having offered him a different path to the one many of his friends went down growing up in a tough area in north London.

O’Brien places huge value in loyalty, given and received. After he confirmed his departure on Twitter last week, he was deluged with positive responses from Lions fans.

“I’m taking my time to read through all the messages,” O’Brien said. “It’s been great from the fans. It’s overwhelming, it’s really emotional.

“In a way I just need it to hurry up and I can sign for another club so I can take my emotions away and get started with a new team.

“It was crazy, people are still thanking me now. It just blew up. I think they appreciate me as much as I appreciate them.”

O’Brien believes a big part of the fans’ respect for him was based on his work ethic on the pitch.

“That’s a given, whatever you do in your life. What’s the point in doing anything if you don’t work hard enough? Millwall fans appreciate that, rightly so, they demand it from players and if you don’t give it they’ll let you know about it.”

O’Brien goes back to the moment, last

February, when he knocked on Millwall boss Gary Rowett’s door the first time to seek clarification on his future.

“I was really worried that he was going to do what he did,” O’Brien admits. “I was scared, but you have to do these things in football if you’re not playing and not involved. You have to approach the manager and say, ‘look, what’s going on, where does my future lie?’

“Obviously I wanted to stay at Millwall.

I would have accepted a new deal. But maybe it’s better that I didn’t and he sent me on my way because now I can go and seek first-team football, get my career back on track and start pushing for Ireland.

“He didn’t really give me a straight answer straightaway. After about another month of not playing I went back in there and said, ‘look, what’s the deal?’ I needed to know as early as possible to give me the chance to find somewhere else. And he told me I’d be allowed to go for a free in the summer.

“Obviously it was a heart-breaking moment for me, but I didn’t want to show it. I wanted to be professional and leave with my head held high. I trained as hard as I could every day, I kept a smile on my face no matter how hard it was. And I left with my head held high and no one could say a bad word about me.”

O’Brien scored three goals in four games last December, including a last-

minute equaliser in a 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest and the only goal in a 1-0 win over Brentford, both at The Den. But he only played four more times for the club, before picking up a quad injury and missing the end of the season.

“It was just a matter of not getting picked, really, due to personnel or just not wanting me for certain games,” O’Brien said. “Most of the goals I scored were from the bench, apart from the Brentford one. It was just one of those things, I made sure I was ready coming off the bench and I scored a few goals, but it clearly wasn’t enough.

“I took it as, it is what it is, I wanted to go out with a bang. I didn’t want to keep knocking on his door, he’d given me his answer. The goals were a bonus, helping out the team, but I knew it was time to leave after the conversation with him.

“I wish I had been able to walk around the pitch after the finish of the Huddersfield game and had a little clap with the fans.

But Covid-19 ruled that one out.”

O’Brien made his debut for the Lions as a seventeen-year-old in September 2011. After loans at Hayes, Crawley and Aldershot, it was almost three years before his next Millwall appearance.

He scored his first goal under Neil Harris, in a 2-2 draw at Brentford in March 2015 before Millwall were relegated from the Championship the following month.

Aiden O’Brien left Millwall last week upward curve for club and player as despite losing the League One play-off final at Wembley in 2016 they won it the following year. In their first season back in the Championship, O’Brien scored six goals.

The next campaign brought another five goals, including one on his senior debut for Ireland.

There was rarely a dull moment from the time of Harris’ first full season in charge when O’Brien became a regular.

“There were a lot of heart-in-mouth kinds of moments,” O’Brien said. “There was the one where Rotherham were at West Brom and we needed them to lose to stay up [in 2018-19]. Also when we almost got into the Championship play-offs the first season back, it was crazy.

“When we lost at Wembley it was really tough to take. But then you look at it and the next season we bounced back to win at Wembley. Other than that there weren’t many negatives in my Millwall time. I’ve loved every minute of it.

“Hopefully Millwall can sustain a bit of stability and be in that top ten, maybe pushing for the play-offs, staying away from relegation.”

O’Brien cites Harris, Scott Fitzgerald, Larry McAvoy and Anthony Gale as his most important influences at the club.

He also forged plenty of close relationships with team-mates. One that wouldn’t immediately spring to mind is Luke Steele.

O’Brien explained: “He’s a very, very funny guy. I get on with him well. We just sometimes sit down in the canteen and talk about very odd things. It escalates into a really interesting conversation. I couldn’t even get into detail, but really odd stuff.

“It would end up being really interesting and people would be wanting to get in on the convo. What a legend he is, a good player and a really good addition to the group.

“I like talking to people that enjoy talking to me. I don’t want to be talking to someone that doesn’t enjoy my company. As long as there’s a mutual respect and a bit of banter, a bit of fun and serious at times, as long as there’s respect then I’m happy to talk away for the whole day. Most of the people at Millwall are like that.

“There are people I’ve come up with through the ranks. Shaun Williams, Shane Ferguson, Ben Thompson. You’ve got Mahlon Romeo who I’m really close to.

There were so many people there that I’ll stay in contact with. You can’t stay in contact with everyone, but I’ll make sure I keep tabs on Millwall and people around Millwall that have been there throughout my career and hopefully do well in the future.”

O’Brien detailed his special connection with Romeo and former Lion Fred Onyedinma, who won promotion to the Championship with Wycombe this month.

“Mahlon is a livewire. Me and him were the people going around the training

ground having banter and being silly, making sure everyone has a smile on their face. It was just having a bit of fun. There is a time to be serious in football but when training’s done it’s nice to have a group of lads that can mess around.

“There are loads like that, Fred Onyedinma, Jake Cooper. Fred’s a nice boy and doing really well, so fair play to him.

I’m proud of him for leaving Millwall and his comfort zone and getting promoted to the Championship with Wycombe. That’s top class from Fred. He knows he’s my boy, I’ve got his back. We were with each other through the youth teams.

“It just shows there is life after Millwall, and hopefully I can hit the ground running with my new team.”

O’Brien, who was born and raised in Islington and has spent all his career south of the Thames, is open to moving away from the capital.

He has already met managers who are trying to convince him to join their club.

“I’ll go anywhere,” he said.

“It might actually be quite refreshing to get out of London and kind of spread my wings a bit and get out of my comfort zone. But we will see, we will see.

“I’m lucky I’ve had a great career with Millwall and

Ireland. I’m sitting back now and letting my agent earn his money. Wherever it will be I’m just looking forward to the next challenge.

“You’re going travelling to meet new people and doing things you’re not used to doing because you were contracted to a club for so long.

“You’re talking to new people now, other managers. It’s quite different and overwhelming. You’ve got people who want you to come and look around

the training ground and stadium because they want you.

“It’s got me excited to see what the next page brings. But nothing is concrete in football, you’ve got to keep your head down, let things take care of themselves and hopefully I can get back to banging in the goals.”

If one of them is ever at The Den, there will be mutual respect on both sides.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT has revealed Millwall are currently working on deals for two transfer targets – but the Lions boss is keeping his cards close to his chest on the identity of the players he wants to add to his squad.

Rowett made Ryan Woods his first signing of the summer this week after Millwall struck a season-long loan agreement with Stoke.

The Lions want to sign at least one forward, with Wigan striker Kieffer Moore a target. Another player Millwall are understood to be in talks for is Tottenham centre-forward Troy Parrott. The eighteen-year-old Ireland international made his senior debut for Spurs last season against Colchester

in the League Cup. He made two substitute appearances in the Premier League and one in the FA Cup. Millwall – who signed Harry Kane from Tottenham as an eighteen-yearold in 2012 – want Parrott on loan.

Rowett’s squad return for pre-season training in just two weeks.

“I think what everyone is accepting and respecting is that they haven’t got as long a timescale to get deals done,” Rowett said. “Also I don’t think people are going to be able to claim quite such lucrative deals. If someone gets offered a good deal, I think agents and players are taking that a lot more seriously than maybe they would have previously.

“We’ve done the Woods one but that doesn’t necessarily mean we’re going to do everything really quickly. We’ve got a couple of deals at the moment that we’re part-way through, but any of those could fall on their face at any minute or they could get done at any

minute.

“It’s as simple as that. It’s very difficult to pinpoint a timescale.

“I’m not going to discount in our out any name. There are going to be a lot of names mentioned that we genuinely haven’t looked at currently.

“That’s not to say that the likes of Alex [Aldridge, recruitment head] hasn’t made contact with a number of players’ agents just to see what the situation is.

“From my point of view some of the names out there are not necessarily people we’re chasing or interested in at the moment.”

Millwall finished last season with a senior first-team squad of 23 players, including loanees. James Brown, Hayden Muller and Tyler Burey made their league debuts on the final day of the season.

Rowett explained: “That’s been one of the reasons we’ve been so keen to blood some of the younger players.

When you look at any squad there needs to be a balance. The balance for us is both financial and numbers, and obviously you don’t want too many senior players in your squad not playing.

“That’s where the young players come into it, they’re there to fill the squad out and try to push to get in the team.

“I see us being in a similar boat, 22, 23 senior players that would expect to be in and around the team, and then from there we’ve got some really, really good young players coming through that we want to see if we can push them into the first team.

“I think that would balance out the squad financially and from a competition point of view.”

Woods makes Lions return

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RYAN WOODS didn’t hesitate to recommit to Millwall for a full season as the midfielder admitted his first spell with the Lions has given him his confidence back.

Woods, 26, became Millwall’s first signing of the summer on a season-long loan deal from Stoke, where he is out of contract next summer.

Former Shrewsbury and Brentford midfielder Woods had lost his place in the Potters side before he joined Millwall in January. He made eighteen league appearances for Gary Rowett’s side, seventeen of them starts.

“I’m really happy. I’m really pleased it has been done so early as well,” Woods said. “It was a no-brainer, I’ve really enjoyed my time here since joining.

“I think that’s started to reflect on the pitch. I’m starting to get my confidence back, which I lacked for twelve to fourteen months. I’m delighted to be back to myself, and I want to help out the team as much as possible going into next season.

“I’m really pleased with the last few weeks, it’s probably put me in line with the rest of the players in the league. I was a bit behind having not played much football at Stoke.

“We’ve got a couple of weeks away with our families, which will be nice – more from a mental point of view than anything – and then we’ll come back in for four/five weeks and do a small preseason.

“Things will then start up again, and hopefully we can get the fans back as soon as possible, because it’s not nice playing in an empty stadium.”
