katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A new law to stop murderers who withhold information about where they hid their victims’ remains from being released has come one step closer to being passed by parliament.

Named ‘Helen’s law’ after murdered Helen McCourt, whose killer has never revealed the whereabouts of her body, the law has been championed by MPs after campaigning from Helen’s mother Marie, and other victims’ families including Jackie Summerford, from Walworth.

Jackie’s daughter’s killer has never admitted his guilt, nor told police what he did with his victims’ bodies.

Jackie, who lives on Walworth’s Aylesbury Estate, has dedicated her life to campaigning for justice for Bonnie, who was a 24-year-old mother-of-one when she disappeared in 2007.

Derek Brown was convicted of her murder, and that of 29-year-old Xiao-Mei Guo, both of whom were living in Whitechapel at the time.

Brown, who was living in Rotherhithe, is believed to have dismembered their

Although the case is opened every two years, Brown has so far refused to put an end to the agony of not knowing where Bonnie’s remains are, and let her family give her a proper funeral.

He was jailed for 30 years in 2008, when he was 48. Theoretically, if he lived long enough he could be free in his late 70s.

But the law would mean killers like these could be refused parole, and it will also now apply to paedophiles who refuse to confirm the identity of victims in images shared online.

The Prisoners (disclosure of information about victims) Bill was announced on October 14, in the Queen’s Speech and given its first reading in parliament the day after.

A date for its second reading and debate

by MPs have yet to be announced but it is hoped it could come into force next year.

Speaking to the News earlier this year, when the new law was first approved for debate by MPs, Jackie said: “My main concern all the way through this, right from the beginning of the trial, is that if [Brown] does not admit where the bodies are he could still one day be out of prison – but now this has given me new hope.”

Instead, all three Labour MPs joined 319 others in supporting the “Letwin Amendment” which effectively blocks a no-deal Brexit by forcing the PM to request an extension from the EU in the event of his withdrawal bill being passed – with just a majority of sixteen. legal commitments to maintain existing workers’ rights and environmental protections and to ensure that rights keep pace in the future.

“At every stage it has refused to do so. Can the Prime Minister explain why people across the country should believe his empty promises now and if the PM is so confident that the British people will not see through his hollow rhetoric, why is he so afraid of giving them a final say?”

With just a week to go until the deadline, no deal, a deal, a delay, general election, referendum or renegotiation with the EU all remain on the table.

Harman and her colleagues from the House of Commons and House of Lords Joint Committee on Human Rights are calling for a complete overhaul of the way mothers and pregnant women are treated by the justice system. Their inquiry recommends preventing mother from being jailed if they are a child’s primary carer - in all but exceptional circumstances - and for it to become a judge’s duty to understand the impact of sentencing on the child.

Currently, no reliable data exists recording the number of children with imprisoned mothers, pregnant inmates or inmates who have given birth behind bars.

It is believed around 17,000 children are growing up with jailed mothers, and are often “invisible” during the trial.

Research consistently shows children with a parent in prison are more likely to become offenders themselves, suffer mental health problems, finish school early and develop drug or alcohol issues – and these are worse for children with incarcerated mothers than fathers.

One woman, who was fifteen when her mother was sentenced, told the inquiry: “The thing I always think about, and I think back to it quite a lot, I know my mum did wrong and deserved a punishment, but if you were to stand my mum up in that box with me and my brother, and someone turned around and said: ‘do you sentence these three?’, would the judge look at it differently?”

As of February 1, 2019, there were 3,797 women in prison in England and Wales.

Eighty-two per cent had committed nonviolent offences. Worryingly, the number serving sentences of six months and under has sharply risen – and now accounts for over half those given in 2018.

The committee’s new report recommends extra support for these children; including financial help for kinship carers, and for all pregnant inmates to be discharged to a mother and baby unit to give birth.

The inquiry heard of cases including a woman who lost her baby while handcuffed in an ambulance. She had been serving a six month sentence for tampering with her electricity meter.

Daring attendees at the South Bank event can also sign up to a ‘bondage for beginners’ workshop

The second annual Erotic Art London will showcase erotica from more than 150 artists between Thursday, October 24 and Saturday October 27 at the Bargehouse in the OXO Tower Wharf.

The artist deemed to have produced the best racy artwork out of the over 500 submissions “in every imaginable media” will be crowned the winner and receive £500, say the organisers.

“This will be a great way for the public to get to know what is happening in the world of erotic art, an art genre that has been followed with taboo for centuries and still is,” said Zena Bratcher, who is a cofounder of the exhibition alongside Espen Krukhaug.

“We hope with hosting an event like this annually, we can help break down some of this taboo and opinions people have on this type of art work.”

Food and drink are also promised – while the more daring of attendees can also sign up to a “bondage for beginners” workshop.

Leanne Pero, 34, from Peckham set up her community dance project – the Movement Factory - nineteen years ago, when she was still a teenager, to help disadvantaged young people through dance.

Since then she has gone on to become the first CEO of iconic dance brand Pineapple Studio’s first charity - Pineapple Community.

In 2016, in her early 30s, she was diagnosed with breast cancer, and has previously told the News of the loneliness she felt during her chemotherapy and treatment.

Black Women Rising, to support BAME women affected by cancer and help dispel common misunderstandings about the disease and its treatment.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has said it will now commemorate Armistice Day at Bermondsey’s West Lane memorial, following an outcry from the local community.

The Town Hall had said the Mayor of Southwark would no longer host a commemoration on the 11th of the 11th at the memorial, as it was more than 100 years since the end of the First World War, but would instead have a service at its own offices on Tooley Street.

The inaugural local event will take place between 10.45am and 4.30pm, featuring the North London Military Wives Choir and readings from the Scouts Clubs and Beavers.

The Mayor of Southwark, Cllr Sandra Rhule, will be attending, while family-friendly attractions such as poppy making, and children’s colouring are also promised.

“Artwork from pupils at Rotherhithe Primary, on Rotherhithe New Road, will be displayed at the event, alongside a D-Day photo display.

Bermondsey residents was organised in its place for 11am amid a backlash against the council’s decision – and now council bosses say they have “noted the strength of feeling” from SE16 residents and will commemorate the Armistice at the memorial after all.

A letter circulated by the Mayor of Southwark’s office about Armistice commemoration events had initially stated that the council was “following national government guidance that acts of commemoration for battles cease after the 100 year period.”

“In line with other London boroughs, the Mayor will no longer be hosting an outdoor ceremony at West Lane, SE16,”

it added.

Cllr Anood Al-Samerai, the leader of the opposition Liberal Democrats on the council and a representative for North Bermondsey ward, said the ‘U-turn’ was “a bit too little, too late.”

“I welcome the news that the council has had a U-turn, but the community has already organised the event,” she said.

“We welcome any Labour councillors who would like to attend.”

Subsequent inscriptions also pay tribute to the sacrifice of soldiers in WW2, as well as civilians who perished.

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe were among the capital’s worst affected areas during the Blitz in WW2.

Council officials had already organised a Remembrance Sunday event on November 10 at the War Memorial in Walworth Square, which it commissioned to mark the centenary of the Armistice last year.

Cllr Lury said that the council would continue to lay wreaths across the borough, including at West Lane and paid tribute to the borough’s “long, proud record of honouring our service men and women.”

Labour’s Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP, Neil Coyle, said he had asked for the council to ensure they were doing as much as they had done in previous years to commemorate our fallen men and women on the Armistice.

“They say this is happening,” he said.

“I’m glad they recognise the strength of feeling in the local community.”

Legion warns against merchandise after ‘Millwall poppy pins’ appeared on websites for inflated prices josh@southwarknews.co.uk The Royal British Legion has warned Millwall fans to beware counterfeit poppy merchandise after its football poppy pins appeared on websites for inflated prices.

A range of badges showing the crests of football clubs alongside a red poppy, including Millwall FC, has been recently launched in time for the official Poppy Appeal start later this week.

But after going out of stock on official channels, the Lions pins have begun to appear for sale on third-party websites, with no guarantee that all profits will go the Royal British Legion’s charity work.

“We are aware of reports of people attempting to sell items from The Royal British Legion’s football club poppy pin collection on online auction sites,” a spokeswoman for the charity told the paper.

It added that its top tip for fans to “avoid buying fake poppy merchandise” and “help beat the fraudsters” was to buy from the official Royal British Legion site, or its

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Tearful residents rounded on the council at a public meeting in the Brandon Estate’s Rachel Leigh Hall last Wednesday, in the aftermath of eighteen-year-old Clinton Evbota’s murder, saying key safety demands made last year have been ignored.

Stephen Douglass, Southwark Council’s director of communities, presented the council’s work in the last eighteen months, including the location of new CCTV cameras, new and improved lighting, and tree cutting to try and get rid of spaces known as gang-member hangouts and areas where stabbings have taken place.

He said the council was working hard to support the community with its safety work, saying the estate is shortlisted for the council’s ‘great estates’ programme, which would bring extra funding for community initiatives, and major works were planned for 2023, to help resolve long-standing problems with the fabric of the buildings – including heating and hot water outages.

But he was interrupted by angry residents who said they were fed up of taking MPs, councillors and Southwark staff and contractors around the estate

telling them what needed to happen – only for their demands to fail to materialise.

One TRA secretary challenged the claims of a council officer who said the tree cutting was continuing on schedule, saying: “I can’t see where he has cut them. Where the murder happened it is so dark there that the ambulance paramedics had to move the young man because they had no light.” Meanwhile, lights near a well-known drug-dealing spot near the park have been out for three months.

One TRA member stood up and said parts of the estate “look like a tropical rainforest”. She described the council’s staff as having a “haphazard schedule – the programme is not being followed”.

Another frustrated resident said: “I am not talking any more about this. I am not doing any more walkabouts with councillors and MPs. It is not rocket science.”

But perhaps the most ire was saved for the council’s decision to plough £150,000 into developing the Jack Hobbs Centre – despite the fact it is not used by most people.

Shockingly, it emerged in the meeting that a document found in the Brandon Library showing council plans to sell off the redeveloped building to developers were accidentally left in public.

“Why are you putting thousands of money into a building that you are thinking about knocking down?” interjected one audience member.

“That seems like very bad housekeeping. Our community has not been able to use it. You are keeping open an empty building.”

“But the heating is not working, I have a damaged floor, and it is unsafe for my ill son.”

At the meeting, held eighteen months after two young men were murdered in 2018, yards away from were Clinton was stabbed, local MP Harriet Harman said: “I cannot believe we are here again”.

She pledged to respond to residents’ concerns by the end of this week, telling residents she understood their anger.

“This is not me bailing out,” she said.

At last week’s meeting, Superintendent Helen Lyons, from Southwark CID, said on behalf of her team she was “absolutely grateful” for the support shown to the investigation.

The Jack Hobbs Club currently has a commercial tenant paying rent. The council claims twice weekly community sessions are taking place – but this has been disputed by residents who say they are not happening.

But the most emotional speeches came from those who felt abandoned as they struggled with Universal Credit and a failing district heating system that had left them in the red.

One woman said: “The children that join these gangs come from povertystricken homes. Cold baths these children are taking - in the year 2019.”

A visibly distressed mother shared her struggle for providing heating for her son, who lives with a long-term health condition, explaining: “When I do not pay my rent and council tax I get letters threatening me to go to court.

Lyons said that Clinton’s family had left the Brandon quite some time previously, after his family chose to move away from the area to keep him safe from gangs.

The News understands elderly residents who had been playing bingo in a nearby tenants’ hall comforted him in his final moments.

The number of teenagers arrested in connection with the murder has now reached seven, after another boy was taken into custody on Sunday night.

The seventeen-year-old from Streatham remains at a south London police station on suspicion of murder.

The six others, all male, who were arrested on Friday, October 18, have all been bailed pending further inquiries.

Two are from Camberwell (both fifteen) one is from Southwark (aged fourteen) two are from Stockwell (aged eighteen and seventeen) and one is from Coulsdon (seventeen).

A post-mortem gave the cause of death as multiple stab wounds.

would corbyn’s pledge help peckham town FC? ‘Yes... but more needs to be done to tackle pointless FA tick-boxes’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Peckham Town FC has welcomed Labour’s pledge to reform the football industry but says more can be done to support grassroots clubs.

This month Jeremy Corbyn has announced that his party would reform the football industry to move more power into supporters’ hands and redistribute a small percentage of profits made by the Premier League among local clubs.

The policy would see new legislation brought in to allow supporters’ trusts to buy shares when clubs change ownership, and give them the power to appoint at least two members to a club’s board of directors.

Five per cent of income from Premier League TV rights would be invested in local club facilities and teams, equivalent to £40 million a year.

Duncan Hart, from the volunteer-run Peckham Town FC, told the News the club welcomed “any move to enable more funds to trickle down from the Premier League” but said the reforms needed to go further.

“Too much money needs to be spent on items to meet FA tick-boxes that are often unnecessary for clubs at the 5th or 6th level of non-league,” he said.

“Fifty to 100 capacity seated stands are required, which is often over and above the number of people that wish to sit.

“This is great for stand manufacturers, but they

often sit half empty when installed.

“It’s essential to ensure that limited funding is spent on items that really benefit clubs and supporters, and ensures a more inclusive environment.

“The funding also needs to be better aligned to when clubs need it.

“Peckham Town men’s team has not been able to gain promotion due to the difficulty of securing funding to undertake the developments required by the FA to enter the 6th level of non-league football.

“The cost of these upgrades far outstrips the £20k match-funding available for clubs at our level.

“Indeed, this funding is only available for changing room work, and not for ground upgrades, and this needs to be self-funded.

“The majority of teams in the Premier Division of the Kent County League do not even apply for promotion to the next level due to the difficulty of obtaining funding, and the overly stringent requirements.

“Additional funding is of course welcome, but this must be accompanied by a review of the system that allocates this funding, when it’s allocated and what it is spent on.”

Labour has also promised to tackle ticket-touts selling on tickets for inflating prices, ensure all club staff are paid a living wage, improve disabled access for fans, and increasing broadcast coverage of women’s sport on free channels.

Responding to the pledge, Helen Hayes, who played an instrumental role in campaigning for Dulwich Hamlet FC’s return to Champion Hill, said: “The Premier League is one of the lucrative profitable leagues in the world, yet keeps most of their profits for the wealthiest clubs in the country.

“Under Labour’s plans, this profit would be reinvested in grassroots clubs to help them improve crumbling facilities.

“Local teams are at the heart of our communities.”

elephant Judicial review starts

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The long-awaited judicial review into the Elephant and Castle regeneration project began this week.

Scheduled for two days from Tuesday October 22, the challenge to Delancey’s scheme will be heard at the Royal Courts of Justice with traders, residents and campaigners giving evidence.

A demonstration was planned for 9am outside the court entrance, by those in favour of the project going back to the drawing board to get more than 116 homes at social rent.

Up the Elephant’s Jerry Flynn, who is the claimant in the case, told the News in advance of the hearing: “We have seen some improvements over the three years since the

plans were first put forward – to begin with there was no social rented housing and nowhere for the traders to move to. All these gains have been achieved by the local community working together, so we have seen that when we fight, we can get more.”

Meanwhile the Public Interest Law Centre’s Paul Heron, acting as a solicitor for Flynn in this case, said: “We have a great legal team and we are fully confident in the justice of our claim”.

Delancey has described its plans as a “once in a lifetime opportunity” to give Elephant and Castle a new town centre, highlighting that the proposals will create 979 homes, including 35 per cent classed as “affordable”, on a site currently without housing.

Seven islands launches OAP club Seven Islands Leisure Centre has launched a new weekly social event for senior citizens to help combat loneliness among OAPs, writes Katherine Johnston...

‘Generation Games’ will run every Thursday from 10am to 12pm, with group activities including pool, table tennis, darts and board games for £2.50 per person.

“Whilst we are all so busy going about our day-to-day lives, we may forget what it’s like for elderly adults in our community who may be spending the majority of their day by themselves,” said Everyone Active’s community development manager James Tierney.

“We’ve planned this new event in the hope that as a community we can tackle loneliness in elderly people and help them feel less isolated and alone.”

According to Age UK, 3.6 million older people in the UK live alone. Nearly two million of them report feeling ignored or invisible.

Research shows loneliness is hugely damaging to physical as well as mental health, and is believed to be as harmful as smoking fifteen cigarettes a day.

Borough market comes to your door

The iconic food market has become the first of its kind in the country to have a click and collection option for customers, while anyone living within a mile-and-half radius can get goods delivered on a zero-emissions electric bike.

The online option, a partnership

with logistics business Good Sixty, launched on Monday, and orders can be placed on the dedicated website, boroughmarket.org.uk/online.

The market also aims to roll-out delivery options across London by 2020, while click-and-collect options can be picked up between 12 and 9pm.

“Those who shop at Borough Market do so because they know that the produce here is high quality, sustainably sourced and often unique,” Managing Director at Borough Market, Darren Henaghan, said.

“Our online service will ensure that more people are able to regularly get hold of ingredients that they simply wouldn’t be able to find elsewhere.”

Good Sixty, which is operating a similar service for retailers in Bristol and Bath, said it was “thrilled” to be working with Borough Market.

“The service will make the Market accessible to many more, opening it up to those who love shopping there but don’t always have the time to explore it on foot,” said founder Chris Edwards.

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk The budget supermarket chain Lidl has said it is looking to double the number of stores across the country – and Southwark could be getting some of them.

Across the capital, it has identified more than 230 places where it “particularly” wants to open new shops.

The Southwark locations included on the wish-list of new stores include London Bridge, North Bermondsey and Elephant & Castle.

But the list is not exhaustive, with the supermarket giant saying it will also consider other locations in London apart from those listed.

In total, Lidl has identified eight

Southwark locations where it wants to open a new branch out of 104 possible sites in south London.

Some would be relocations of already existing shops.

However, the list is not set in stone, as it would be subject to finding suitable land for the outlets.

Eleas Alfa Patience Godwin, 43, of no fixed address, was charged yesterday with rape and actual bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The charge comes after a woman contacted police on Tuesday, October 15, to report that she had been raped at around 3am that morning.

Police had launched an appeal for information, and said they would like to thank the public for their assistance.

A man has been charged with allegedly raping a woman in the Tibetan Peace Gardens in South Bank’s Lambeth Road.

In an update shared online, the parents of the little French boy, who suffered a fractured spine, arms and legs after the 100ft fall, said he is making “some little progresses.”

Eighteen-year-old Jonty Bravery, of Ealing, has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the attack and is expected to go on trial in February.

A ban on identifying him expired earlier this month after he turned eighteen.

The doting parents of the French boy said: “He still has some metal in his body but instead of plasters he has got a full armour of splints: legs, feet, hands, arms, neck and torso.

“It is impressive; he looks like a little knight, and we can take these splints off sometimes.

“He also makes some little progresses: he moves his right hand more and more and arm on command (he catches us most of the time when we are nearby!), even if he feels sometimes a little bit sad when he doesn’t manage to do what he tries.”

The family have previously spoken

of their anguish at their boy’s condition, as he is unable to speak or eat properly following the fall.

“We really hope he will speak and eat again as soon as possible, but we know that it can take months,” they added.

“Thank you so much all of you again to help us in our fight, our little boy doesn’t give up, and we neither!”

The update was posted on a fundraising page set up by wellwisher in Britain, Vicky Diplacto, who was not previously known to the family.

Ms Diplacto’s appeal has so far raised over €126,000 to go towards paying for the boy’s recovery.

“The focus of this page is to continue to raise as much funds as possible in order that we can get this boy the very best rehabilitation going forward,” she said.

“Although it is a positive step that he is no longer in intensive care in hospital, he has suffered extremely serious injuries for which will continue to require specialist care.”

The service which helps people into work or apprenticeships moved from Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre to its new base in 376 Walworth Road in the summer.

It also helps local businesses recruit talent from the borough.

Its programme director, Jayne Couchman, said more than a hundred people had been helped into employment since the new office opened in July, and the team was seeing an overall increase in people registering.

Southwark councillor Stephanie Cryan, the cabinet member responsible for jobs, business and innovation, said: “We are committed to delivering a strong local economy for the people and businesses of Southwark to thrive in.

‘teen was ambushed’ Sixteen-year-old was left fighting for his life after the attack

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Detectives investigating a stabbing in Bermondsey earlier this month, which has left a sixteen-year-old boy in a serious condition in hospital, say he was ambushed by a group of males.

They are now appealing for information and witnesses after a teenager was left fighting for his life following a stabbing, which they say involved several large weapons.

One man has been charged with section 18 grievous bodily harm in connection with this incident.

Another man, who was arrested on suspicion of GBH with intent, has been released on bail.

Police were called at approximately 10:10pm on Sunday October 6, to reports of a male stabbed in Druid Street, off Abbey Street in Bermondsey.

Officers and London Ambulance Service attended and found a 16-year-old boy suffering stab injuries.

He was taken to a south London hospital for treatment where he remains in a serious condition.

The investigation, which is being led by detectives based at Walworth police station, has so far led officers to believe the attack happened after one group of young males pursued another group down Druid Street.

It is thought this resulted in an ambush on the victim who was then stabbed. Several large weapons

are believed to have been brandished and police say the victim was with several others on the night of the incident.

Druid Street is on the Bermondsey Beer Mile route and police say a number of people were in the area around the time he was stabbed.

Any witnesses or anyone with information are being encouraged to come forward to help the investigating team, or anonymously if they do not feel comfortable talking to police.

Detective Constable Sascha Eady said: “We are working incredibly hard to piece together the events of that night and the incident that resulted in a savage attack on a teenage boy.

“A young man is in a serious condition in hospital and we urge those currently withholding information to assist us in any way they can.

“We are aware there has been a lot of discussion about the incident on social media and we want to reach out to anyone who can help with our enquiries.

Pair to be extradited for Elephant murder Two men have been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of 24-year-old Norman Bertran-Tavarez at Elephant & Castle Tube station last month, writes Josh Salisbury...

A 30-year-old man, from Barking, was arrested in Antwerp, Belgium on Tuesday, with a 22-year-old, also of Barking, arrested in Antwerp the following day. Both have been arrested on suspicion of murder.

Police launched their murder probe after Norman and another victim were found with stab wounds in a street close to the tube station on September 1.

Norman sadly died of his injuries the following day in hospital. Another man, aged 25, was seriously injured in the knife attack, but

was later released from hospital.

“This is a pleasing development in our ongoing investigation into the tragic death of a man, and violent assault of another, in a London Underground station,” said Detective Chief Inspector Sam Blackburn.

The arrests follow European Arrest Warrants being issued. They will both appear before court in Belgium and then be extradited back to the UK. “Thanks to our colleagues in Belgium, we have now detained two men who will extradited to the United Kingdom,” added DCI Blackburn.

Two 20-year-old men, both from Southwark, who were arrested at the time on suspicion of violent disorder, were both released without further action, said police.

Stab victim in bbc’s rickshaw challenge

By Josh Salisbury josh@southwarknews.co.uk A young Bermondsey man will take part in a BBC Children in Need challenge after it helped him recover from a stabbing.

Twenty-year-old Uche will take part in the BBC’s Rickshaw Challenge along with One Show’s Matt Baker for the appeal, after money raised by Children In Need helped him recover a knife attack.

The popular Bermondsey boy’s life changed dramatically in February 2017 when he was stabbed while looking for his stolen bike. The knife went through his upper arm and artery, and he was

rushed to hospital.

He spent a month in hospital recuperating from his wounds, and while the physical injuries began to heal, Uche says he struggled with recovery.

However, he began to attend a youth project, XLP, which is funded

by Children In Need – and with their help has landed himself an apprenticeship in Engineering.

“Following the stabbing I found things quite difficult but with the help of XLP I have been able to focus on my future and make the best of my situation,” he said.

XLP, which works in nine innercity London boroughs including Southwark, receives a three-year grant from Children in Need to help

deliver weekly football sessions and mentoring to youngsters from challenging backgrounds.

The Rickshaw Challenge will see six young people and Matt Baker travelling across the country from Friday November 8, before ending up at the Elstree studios for the Children in Need appeal show on Friday November 15.

The team’s progress will be broadcast live on the One Show throughout the week, with Matt Baker’s co-presenters following the team on their 400 mile journey.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Four people have been arrested after a triple stabbing in Peckham on Monday afternoon.

Police confirmed those taken into custody on suspicion of GBH were “three males and one female” but gave no further details.

The Met was called at 4.22pm on Monday (October 21) to reports of a stabbing near Nunhead Lane.

Two male victims were found with stab injuries in Banfield Road. They were aged eighteen and 23. Both were

hospitalised.

Detectives confirmed the eighteenyear-old’s injuries are “not lifethreatening”, but the 23-year-old is still being treated for “serious injuries”.

A third victim was found in Brookstone Court. He is eighteen. Police are currently waiting for an update on his condition.

A Met spokesperson said officers were still working to establish whether there were more victims.

A section 60, allowing full stop and search powers, was in place from 7pm Monday night until 2am Tuesday morning across the entire borough.

school’s bid to stop dirty classroom air

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Harris Primary Academy in East Dulwich is the latest in the borough to install air filters to prevent pupils from breathing in dirty air.

Parent Lauren Juliff applied for money from Southwark Council’s Greener Cleaner Safer Fund, receiving £17,000 toward the £23,000 cost of buying an installing the units that are now running in every classroom.

The rest of the money was raised with the help of a summer fair and parents’ quiz night.

Lauren said: “I was horrified about the high levels of particulate pollution in the air in my local community.

“Recent studies have shown that children are often even more exposed to dangerous particulate matter inside their classrooms than they are in playgrounds and on the school run.

“I wanted to do something to protect our growing children and am so pleased to be able to.”

The school has also benefited from a “green screen” of ivy, to reduce pollution around the school’s perimeter.

But the air filters don’t just get rid of pollution. Head teacher Jo Conduit explained: “The units are estimated to cut particulate matter in the air by over 80 per cent, so they are making a real difference to our children’s health and wellbeing.

“The units also filter out dust mites, bacteria and viruses, so we hope the children will also suffer from fewer allergies and bugs too.”

Southwark Council’s cabinet member for the environment, Richard Livingstone, encouraged any parents and teachers keen to tackle air pollution to join one of the Cleaner Air for Southwark School’s meetings.

An inaugural launch event, held on the Canada Estate on Saturday, October 12, was followed by a talk on the Mayflower Story by local resident and historian Dr Rita Cruise-O’Brien.

The talk, sponsored by Southwark Council and others, aimed to raise awareness of the Mayflower’s rich history in advance of the 400th anniversary of its sailing to the New World next year.

Now the society has called for more volunteers to help organise future events around Southwark’s heritage.

Morley could get £32.3M in merger

The merger, which would see Kensington & Chelsea College being incorporated into Morley, would unlock Government funding of up to £32.3million says the SE1-based establishment.

A consultation into the plans closed on Wednesday.

“The funding will provide significant capital investment at the Chelsea and North Kennington centres while supporting the maintenance and development of a responsive curriculum offer across all three centres,” said Dr Stuart Edwards and Ian Valvona, chairs of the two governing bodies at the respective institutions.

“We believe there is a good

curriculum fit between the two colleges, and with the financial support pledged by Government, the merger provides a unique opportunity to develop sustainable, communitybased education.”

t’s that time of the year again. The long, warm summer days already seem a distant memory as we dig out our big coats and umbrellas ready for winter.

And with winter comes ‘seasonal flu’ – an unpleasant virus that is highly infectious and can be spread rapidly through coughs and sneezes.

Flu can be particularly nasty, causing high temperatures, body aches and generally leaving you feeling pretty exhausted and unwell.

For most people who catch it, you should start to feel better within a week or so. Just stay at home, drink plenty of water and rest until you’re better. Your pharmacist can advise on treatments and remedies to reduce the effects, and if you feel really ill, call 111.

However, some people are more susceptible to the effects of flu, with the virus increasing the risk of developing more serious illnesses, which could result in hospitalisation, permanent disability or even death.

Last winter, more than five thousand people were hospitalised because of flu and the virus kills an average of eight thousand people annually.

That’s why the NHS offers free vaccinations for those at particular risk of flu. This includes: • People with existing health conditions: for example, things like heart problems, breathing conditions, liver or kidney diseases, or neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis or cerebral palsy. Flu on top of these conditions increases your chances of serious health compilations.

here is a view encouraged by the Prime Minister and his media friends that Parliament is transfixed

by Brexit; that we are not focusing on other issues.

For reference, in the last few weeks I have raised multiple issues including: continued problems Universal Credit causes thousands of people in Southwark like arrears and evictions; the rise in deaths of homeless people which reached an appalling two every day last year in England and Wales; and the need to recruit more police officers in Southwark.

As ever, Johnson’s attempt at deceit is transparent. But if his Government cannot tackle Brexit and address the other issues facing people across our country it is an admission of serious failure. Just like the Home Office plans to re-introduce some of the police officers that have been cut since 2010 is an acknowledgement the Government got it wrong.

When Boris Johnson was a backbencher he voted for Clegg and Cameron’s cuts to the police. As Mayor of London he implemented them.

Now, the Home Office cannot tell me when we will get back some of the 400 officers and PCSOs Southwark lost to the austerity agenda.

The Home Office does admit there is a link between fewer officers and the national rise in violent crime. This took far too long to drag out of ministers. But the admission has come with no apology to the areas like ours facing higher levels of antisocial behaviour and some other crimes, or the families destroyed by the loss of children to knife crime.

We do need more police officers and they need the resources and powers to try and keep our community safe: issues I have campaigned on ever since I was elected.

I recently joined one of our local Safer Neighbourhood Teams on a patrol in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe and, due to cuts, they only have use of a car for their patrol approximately once a month! That is insufficient. It is also unacceptable to fail to prosecute people for carrying and using knives. It is unbearable for mothers like Walworth’s Mariama Kamara who have lost sons but still not seen anyone face justice.

Our country has lost its ability to

secure justice for too many crimes and this will take time to turn back around.

In the meantime, I’m glad Southwark Council is investing in young people through the Positive Futures Fund and that Mayor Sadiq Khan has not only kept 1,000 police officers on our streets despite further cuts to the Met from the Treasury, but he is also investing in the Young Londoners’ Fund. That positive alternative must be encouraged alongside the re-expansion of our police so please do apply for funding if you have ideas to help.

Last Saturday I’d much rather have joined the hundreds of people attending the Walworth Society History Festival – well done all involved! I’d also rather have watched England beat Australia in the rugby World Cup. I saw people heading to watch the game as I went to Parliament. Johnson again lost the vote after unbelievably offering a downgrade of Theresa May’s proposal. His track record in Government is one of utter failure, losing nearly every vote and failing to move anything forward. His approach still risks the United Kingdom breaking apart and I will continue to oppose it.

Eagle-eyed Primark shoppers have forced the company to withdraw a London-themed tea towel off the shelves after noticing quite a few howlers with local geography.

The towel, decorated with a ‘map’ of inner-city London, had so many mistakes the retailer decided not to stock it anymore.

It put St Paul’s and the Gherkin on the wrong side of Tower Bridge, along with placing Big Ben and Westminster

Abbey on the south bank of the river Thames.

Or that should be ‘Westminister’ Abbey, for there were numerous spelling errors in the mistake-strew map too.

Now Primark has offered anyone who purchased the product a complete refund.

“Customers who purchased the product can return it to one of our stores for a full refund and we apologise for any inconvenience caused,” says a shop spokesperson.

Rubber omission at Elephant exhibition Last week, we reported on an exhibition of photography which takes snapshots of Elephant & Castle’s London Road in 1904, 1975 and 2019.

The pictures, being displayed at the London College of Communication, give a fascinating insight into how the community has changed, for better or for worse.

Dual crossword The lack of a council Armistice service at West Lane was clearly an error of judgement

A

re you or aren’t you? That was the question the News was asking this week of council officials, questioning whether it would be commemorating Armistice Day at Bermondsey’s West Lane memorial.

Originally the Mayor of Southwark’s office had circulated a message stating it would not be hosting an outdoor service at the SE16 memorial for the Armistice anniversary, as it was more than 100 years ago.

This, it said, was in line with national government guidance.

Instead, it said it would have a ceremony before 11am at its own offices on Tooley Street. This, in itself, is puzzling: the borough has many memorials to our brave service personnel who gave so much during two devastating wars. Tooley Street then perhaps does not seem the most logical venue for the public to join in on November 11 with commemorating those who lost their lives in the Great War. But now, after local Bermondsey residents with help from ward councillors and TRA members organised their own service for the Armistice at West Lane, the council says it will join in after all.

“Having noted the strength of feeling in the local community, we have listened and taken the decision to commemorate Armistice Day on 11 November, at West Lane,” it now says.

This is an unambiguous U-turn. This is, of course, not to suggest that council officials do not also wish to pay their deepest and most profound respects to our fallen men and women. Nobody should suggest so. After all, as council officials rightly point out, it commissioned a memorial on Walworth Square to mark the Centenary of WW1 last year.

This venue will play host to a Remembrance Sunday event on November 10, to which all are invited. Council bosses are right, too, to note Southwark’s “long, proud record of honouring our service men and women.”

But the lack of a council Armistice service at West Lane was an error of judgement nonetheless, one which was not sensitive to the particular and well-justified strength of feeling in the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe community.

The News welcomes the council’s reconsideration – and pays tribute to the hard work of those SE16 residents who decided to organise their own commemoration anyway.

On Wednesday, October 9, the actors, who played Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip in Netflix’ The Crown met pupils and performed their production, Lungs, in front of 140 students in the school hall.

The play, written by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Matthew Warchus, examines a couple’s relationship through some of the biggest global issues from

political unrest to climate change. It runs at the Old Vic until November 9.

Josie Murphy, the school’s director of creative arts at the school said: “It was a real privilege for our students to experience world class acting in our school hall.

"They have learnt so much which they can now apply as they prepare for their own performance exams.”

Evie Cakebread, a Year 13 student at the school, said: “The performance was incredibly powerful, largely down to the topical issues it presented and the way in which the actors led us to empathise with the female character. It was a wonderful experience.”

Marathon disorder hotspot crackdown

Borough Road cycle lane proposed

Police want to launch a crackdown on nitrous oxide-using youths on the London Marathon route after “considerable public disorder” at this year’s event, writes Josh Salisbury...

Southwark Council is proposing to create segregated cycle lanes on either side of SE1’s Borough Road, writes Josh Salisbury...

Under recently published plans for the major thoroughfare, which runs from St George’s Circus to Borough High Street, the lanes would also be followed by an early release for cyclists at the Southwark Bridge road junction and a separate cycle signal at the Harper Road junction.

Council officials said consultation on the changes was necessary because of high traffic speeds and volumes in Borough Road and nearby Harper Road.

It also said buses were slowed down by the lack of a continuous bus lane through the Borough Road and Harper Road junction.

The move has been welcomed by Transport for London, which said: “We’re pleased to see Southwark Council’s proposals to make Borough Road safer for people walking and cycling, including segregated cycle lanes.”

But in response, one social media user said: “Borough Road is already very safe for walking and every road that crosses it already has cycle lanes. At the junction with St George’s Circus most bikes ignore the lanes and use London Road not Lambeth Road cycle lanes.”

Flu jabs, cakes and tea raise cash

josh@southwarknews.co.uk a cake sale at a Bermondsey GP has raised over £300 for Time and Talents, the Rotherhithe community centre.

Staff at the Mill Street Surgery held their annual ‘Collect and Protect afternoon tea’ earlier this month, which aims to both raise money for charity and increase flu vaccinations for the over-65s.

The event was led by surgery receptionist Teri Johnson, with raffle prizes donated from businesses on nearby Tooley Street including Tesco, M&S and Boots in Hayes Galleria.

“This year we are supporting a smaller local charity called Time and Talents, they reach out and support the wider community from all ages, background and needs,” said Ms Johnson.

“We believe it is important to work with the wider community and bring people and businesses together.”

A total of £306 was raised for Time and Talents on the day, which is based in St Marychurch Street.

Breakfast club thanks for Kelloggs cash

As the impact of austerity and rising costs continues to affect struggling families, more children are at risk of hunger during the school day.

The school is one of many across the borough to provide a healthy and nutritious start to the day, making sure students are able to concentrate on their work.

School principal, Tim Dainty, said: “We are so grateful to receive this generous donation. We are now able to purchase more exciting spreads for our bagel bar and we look forward to running special end of term breakfasts for our students.

“These resources will help us provide our breakfast club services for our children and their families. Thanks to the support from Kelloggs.”

The donation comes at a time when many food banks are preparing for the coldest months – and Christmas.

In Southwark, food charities the Trussell Trust and FareShare are appealing for volunteers to help out during TESCO’s annual food collection.

Held from Thursday, November 21, until Saturday, November 23, both charities will be out in force at stores across the UK encouraging shoppers to donate.

Volunteer Farihah Choudhury helped at last year’s Tesco food collection, helping to pick up donations for local groups supported by FareShare.

“I loved volunteering last year - it was great to speak with shoppers donating food. The kindness I saw was wonderful and gave me a lot of hope,” she said.

“I believe everyone should have access to good, healthy food and I’d encourage anyone who can to give some time to help stop people going hungry this Christmas.”

City of London officers have said that large groups of young people have used the annual event to “congregate in large numbers to drink alcohol and use drugs, notably nitrous oxide.”

The substance, more commonly called laughing gas, is illegal to supply for recreational uses and has been dubbed ‘hippy crack’ by some press outlets.

Around 500 youths turned a small area close to Tower Bridge into a “no go area for members of the public” this year, according to a City of London Corporation report - with the scale of disorder even taking seasoned officers by surprise.

Youngsters were arrested for violent disorder, grievous bodily harm and possession of Class A drugs, states the report. But as one officer was making an arrest on one of the yobs, their horse fell, crushing them underneath and breaking their ankle.

Now City police have requested a Public Spaces Protection Order (PSPO) for hot-spot, which would give them additional powers to confiscate nitrous oxide and alcohol.

“Seasoned Public Order Officers assigned to the event, who are used to dealing with high levels of disorder, were taken aback with the level of disorder and how quickly the situation escalated,” the report says.

Bermondsey’s Onions hits the big screen Patrick Onione, commonly known as Onions, was born in Guy’s Hospital and grew up in Bermondsey with a keen interest in drama, writes Michael Holland...

Alas, it wasn’t until Patrick found himself in a hostel for the homeless that he had the chance to take his interest any further to see if he was any good.

The renowned theatre company Cardboard Citizens, run by Adrian Jackson, gave a workshop at the hostel and Patrick took the opportunity to get involved. This led to working with them on many critically acclaimed projects over several years and his love of acting was finally realised.

More recently Jackson and film-

maker Andrea Luka Zimmerman called Patrick in to try for a part in their collaborative film, Here For Life.

The film follows the experiences of ten individuals living in London, whose lives have been shaped by loss and love, trauma and bravery, struggle and resistance. They dance together, steal together, eat together; agree and disagree, celebrate their differences and share their talents, grappling with a system that seems stacked against them. Their stories and performances become woven together, blurring the lines between fact and fiction through a series of intimate confessions, staged performances and journeys through London.

Patrick plays Horatio Nelson,

and found an affinity with the role because, he says, ‘My greatgrandfather had once spent a fortune trying prove the family was related to Nelson!’ Onions says that he is basically playing himself in the film: ‘I was put in situations where I had to walk about where I grew up, down by the river and past Downside boys’ club, and also nicking a salmon over the fish market,’ he tells me. ‘At one point I mentioned to the team that I’d always fancied being in a western,’ the actor recalls. ‘A couple of weeks later they had a horse for me that I had to ride down Brixton’s Electric Avenue!’

Zimmerman, whose work is concerned with marginalisation, social justice and structural violence,

said of Here For Life: ‘We hope the audience will become part of the journey of the film, will be moved and challenged, recognising a shared humanity that understands suffering, endurance and resistance.’

Adrian Jackson, one of the world’s leading experts on the Theatre of the Oppressed, says: ‘If this film tells us anything about London today, it’s that there are many unconsidered lives surviving against the odds. It feels important to tell these kinds of stories today – to hear from people who are often ‘othered’ in a variety of ways - to show a world we don’t see enough of.’

Green Fairy in the Union An ode to queer parenting and overcoming anxiety, The Green Fairy is an immersive pub musical following one woman’s struggle to take back control of her own life before it’s too late.

It’s difficult being Easy Easy is a powerful new play by Amy Blakelock, exploring what happens when we combine social media, Love Island ideals, Snapchat and teenage insecurity.

An intimate portrait of adolescence, Easy is a public call for open and honest conversations about sex, bodies and demanding respect for ourselves.

Developed in consultation with teachers and teenagers, and supported by PSHE specialists and the sexual health charity Brook, this is a one-woman show that

The incredible story of one man’s war, pictured in the ruins of London Bridge As the poppy appeal is launched to remember the fallen soldiers of previous conflicts - the News delves into its archives to re-tell the horror of the Second World War for the people of Southwark.

In 2011 nearly 70 years to the day a bomb destroyed Stainer’s Street Arch at London Bridge Jim Smith then aged 90 re-told us his story; “I'll never forget that awful sight,” he said. “Two little girls had been killed in the blast, and their little bodies were just lying there charred. I still get tearful thinking about it now.”

For Bermondsey-born Jim it still felt like yesterday, so vivid were his memories of the bomb that landed on the arch in Stainer Street. He is pictured here (circled in main photo) standing in the aftermarth of the bombing.

On February 17, 1941 - one of the worst nights of the Blitz - 300 people crowded into the arch to shelter, sealed in by a pair of ten tonne steel doors.

At 10.25pm, a high explosive bomb burst through the ceiling and exploded.

In the horror that followed, 68 bodies were recovered and 175 people were injured.

When Jim arrived the next morning, he saw a devastating scene.: "I'd been on duty all night as an air-raid warden, helping people to the nearest shelter and doing first aid. It was one of the worst nights during the war. I saw so much destruction and death that night in the Old Kent road area.

“In the morning, I came back to the Stainer Street arches where I worked as a cellarman during the day - I worked for B.M.& J. Strauss, and there was a tannery next door us.

“The arch was being used as a shelter for people who’d been bombed out of their homes, but despite the hardship, I’d never heard a complaint from any of them. At night they would have a sing song, and even neighbours who normally quarreled became friends.

“When I got there, I saw that a bomb had gone through the roof of the arch.

The blast had been so strong that two iron doors that covered the arch had been sucked in, crushing people.

“Ambulances, police, the emergency services were all there. In the photograph, I had just arrived at the scene. I think I'd only had about an hour and a half's sleep, but I was soon given a shovel and set to work again.

“I had got to know many of the people that used the shelter as a permanent home after losing theirs, and that made it more horrible for me. I was only 20 at the time.

“The night before the bomb was dropped, I got my call up papers, and two weeks later I joined the Worcestershire Regiment, and became a radio operator in the Royal Corps of Signals. I didn’t know it then, but I was fated to take part in the D-Day landings.

“I remember the build up to D-Day - we were concentrated for some weeks in the New Forest in Hampshire. There were a variety of nationalities among the troops and there were folding canvas beds to

Jim Smith on his wedding day, January 13, 1945 “In December 1944, I was sent back to England from the borders of Germany. I was given 28 days leave to get married, before being sent to India, Burma and Sumatra. After the war, years later, I tried to go back to the arch on Stainer Street.

Once I even got on the bus to go there, but I just couldn’t face it. To this day I’ve never gone back.”

In 2003 the News inconjunction with the Southwark Heritage Association and Southwark Council erected a Blue Plaque on Stainer’s Street - now part of London Bridge’s revamped station - to ensure all the victims would be remembered forever more.

Below is the touching poem Jim wrote to the paper back in 2011.

“On the morning of June 6, 1944, I was sealed into an American Tank Landing Craft with all the heavy radio equipment on the back of a jeep. The vehicles were all waterproofed and equipped with snorkels so that they could go in fairly deep water.

“I couldn’t see anything, but I could hear water bubbling and guns firing all around like thunder. It was the sound of the naval guns. I can’t swim and I’m very

claustrophobic, so it was scary.

“When the door of the landing craft opened, I looked up and the skies were black with planes. It was a horrendous experience.

“We landed on Gold Beach, Arromanches, Normandy, at about 10 a.m. It was our job to go to whoever was in action and send messages back to 30 Corps H.Q. Afterwards, we carried on moving through France.

“I remember one day we came across

two deserted tanks. When I looked inside, the bodies of the soldiers were still in there and the maggots had set in.

“We often had to cover our jeep with bushes to hide from the Germans. One night we stopped to stay in a farmhouse.

There were chickens running around, so we thought we’d catch one and eat it, but in the end none of us could bring ourselves to kill the chicken. I can laugh about these things now, though at the time it wasn’t so funny.

Dear Southwark News I got out of bed this morning and looked at the poem, as I have done every morning for many years since I wrote it after my experiences in Europe,India, Burma & Sumatra (WW2). Here is the poem: The memories of my fallen mates, Whose lives could not be saved, And the guilty feelings that I had, When I returned unscathed, No one will know the anguish, That I will always bear, Or the many hidden tears I've shed, For the mates I left back there!!

DOCKLAND SETTLEMENTS GIRLS FOOTBALL

Millwall Premier League Kicks FREE WEEKLY GIRL’S ONLY FOOTBALL SESSIONS WHERE? Dockland Settlements, 400 Salter Road, Rotherhithe, SE16 5AA WHEN? Thursdays 5-6PM AGE? 8-12 Year Olds According to the women’s sport foundation, by the age of 14 girls are dropping out of sports at two times the rate of boys.

This is a particular issue in the London borough of Southwark. According to data collected by Southwark Council just over 40.2% of males compared to only 28% of females are taking part in 30 minutes of sport per week.

According to This Girl Can, which is a nationwide campaign backed by Sport England with the objective of getting women and girls moving, regardless of shape, size and ability 40% of women aged 16 and over are not active enough to get the full health benefits of sport and physical activity, compared to 35% of men.

Engaging more woman and girls into sport has been a hot topic for many years with the likes of the Premier League and Sport England trying to implement a big push over the last few years. Regarding girls in sport, the Premier League Kicks programme will be looking to increase female participation between the ages of 8 to 18 playing football on a regular basis and to increase the opportunities for women and girls to develop skills and confidence and progress within the pathway as a player, coach or an official.

In partnership with the Dockland Settlements in Rotherhithe, the Millwall Premier League Kicks programme have been running a free girl only football session which runs every Thursday from 5-6pm for girls aged 8 to 11 where the group are encouraged to develop a mastery of the ball and be confident to try new

things, be confident in showcasing their individuality on the ball and use the individuality to benefit themselves and their friends. The group also work on a range of skills such as running, jumping, hopping, bending, twisting and dodging. All of which are important motor skills. These motor skills are vital to a child development as they help a child gain strength and confidence in their body. Furthermore, it helps them to get exercise which is important for a physical, physiological and social lifestyle.

A parent of a participant that attends the session was in full praise of the efforts Millwall PL Kicks are investing into girls’ football: “My daughter loves the only girls football sessions run by Millwall Premier League Kicks for girls.

Each session is run with care and never lacking in fun. The girls develop their skills, are aware of targets they can aim towards and are constantly praised for their achievements. The coaches are approachable, polite and supportive

to the girl’s individual needs. I highly recommend the sessions to any girl who is wishing to improve her football skills, to gain confidence on as well as off the pitch and to have a positive attitude towards team sports and girl's football particularly.”

Millwall Premier League Kicks coordinator and coach on the session Gary Otim commented: “Its been a massive drive of the Kicks programme to engage with more girls in sport.

Our track record of general engaging, retaining and sustaining participation over the years has been excellent. We have always been strong in this regard due to the high demand of football from boy and young men in the boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham. However, with the support from the Dockland Settlement and the Premier League we have been able to start a free girl’s only football session. By targeting girls at an earlier age means hopefully they will continue a longer-lasting journey in football where they will hopefully stay in love with football and sport.

Many of the parents have commented saying there aren’t enough accessible provisions for girls which is something we will continue to try to rectify.

Millwall Community Trust will continue provide a wide range of weekly football sessions across the London boroughs of Southwark and Lewisham under the Premier League Kicks programme.

Cheeseman departs furious with ‘disgusting’ decision as he loses British title in Newcastle

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TED CHEESEMAN blasted the decision to award a points victory to Scott Fitzgerald last Saturday which saw the Bermondsey fighter lose his super-welterweight British crown as “disgusting”.

Bermondsey’s Cheeseman departed the ring in fury after Preston’s Fitzgerald was given the bout 116-113 (twice) and 115-113 on the judges’ scorecards.

Cheeseman, 24, renowned for his aggression in coming forward, had seemed to surprise Fitzgerald with a back-foot approach and good lateral movement that frustrated his unbeaten opponent.

Former Fisher amateur Cheeseman used every inch of the canvas and accurately landed his punches, his left jab in particular seemingly putting him in command after seven rounds.

But Fitzgerald didn’t panic and managed to draw Cheeseman into a close-quarters battle late on, appearing

to edge the later rounds.

Cheeseman was confident that he had done enough for the win following the first defeat of his career against Sergio Garcia in February and June’s draw against Kieron Conway.

There was some surprise among those present in Newcastle with the decision.

Matchroom promoter Eddie Hearn said: “I thought for nine rounds Ted Cheeseman put on a boxing clinic, I thought the fight was over.

“I think Scott Fitzgerald won the last four rounds of the fight, [it was] very

close, very close. I wouldn’t fully agree with the scorecards.”

Cheeseman’s professional record now stands at 15-2-1 as he must plot a recovery from the most difficult spell of his career.

He was understandably emotional immediately after the fight.

Cheeseman said: “It was disgusting. As soon as the last bell went in my head I’d clearly cruised the fight. The last two I probably lost, the first round was close, maybe I would have given it to him.

“But two to ten I pissed. Eleven and twelve he was desperate, he was trying to knock me out because he’s a big puncher, that’s what his plan was at the end.

“I managed to get through, I was still popping the jab, still being sharp, still making him miss.

“I boxed class for twelve rounds. A couple of rounds he nicked but I still kept to the game plan. Everyone thinks I can’t box. Well what about when I beat Carson Jones? What about when I beat other opponents, boxing, boxing, off the jab, off the jab?

“I made Scott Fitzgerald look average, I made him slip and miss with the uppercut. That was the best performance I had as a professional boxer.

“Everyone was raving about how big a puncher Scott was – I wasn’t hurt once.

He hardly hit me cleanly, it was only on the gloves.

“As soon as the bell went I looked around the ring and boxing people, who weren’t part of Sky, everyone had me winning: ‘Well done, Ted, you boxed class.’

“Scott Fitzgerald knew he lost, [trainer] Michael Jennings knew he lost.

I don’t know what I had to do.

“I fought Kieron Conway in my last fight, marched forward for twelve

rounds, everyone thought I won. I boxed on the back foot, another style, and everyone thought I won again [by] three or four rounds. Never got the decision.

“Last time I drew. Worst was at least if I drew at least I kept the belt. But, come on, 116-113 twice, 115-113. What were they watching, were they scoring the fight before the rounds even started?

“It’s disgusting. I trained for fourteen weeks. I’ve changed my life around the last six months. I lost to Sergio Garcia, my head wasn’t there. I was putting my head out the get hit. “[Saturday] everything worked good, it worked properly, I boxed class. All the real boxing people who know boxing know I won.

“It’s disgusting, absolute politics. Sky Sports wants Anthony Fowler against Scott Fitzgerald. Scott Fitzgerald sells a lot of tickets. Anthony Fowler sells a lot of tickets, he’s from Liverpool.

[Fitzgerald] is from Preston near Manchester, down the road from each other.

“It’s politics, I’m sick of it. Right this second I’ve given up boxing. You never know, because obviously I’m angry. But right now I ain’t got the drive.

“What I put my body through, the dieting, the sacrifice, all for this. I don’t care about a pay day, I can go and work, I’m only 24, there are loads of careers I can take.

“It ain’t about a pay day, it’s about pushing as far as I can in my career. I showed I could box classy off the back foot against another unbeaten fighter.

“I don’t care what anyone’s got to say to me, I won the fight and I’m sick. I’m heartbroken because all I’ve given to boxing, boxing’s given f**k-all to me. I don’t know what more I had to do apart from knocking him out.

“If I’d knocked him out I think I’d have got disqualified.”

The Hamlet have booked their place in the first round of the competition for the first time since 1998 and will bank £36,000 in prize money if they defeat Steven Pressley’s League Two side.

They would add that to the £37,750 they received after coming through three qualifying rounds to get to this stage.

THE RYE travelled to Dulwich last weekend in the first round of the WESFA Dewar Shield and came away with victory.

It was an impressive win against a Lions side that are two divisions above Peckham, last year’s league runners-up who had to be on top form.

Manager Danny Gibson shuffled his starting XI with Duke Binitie dropping into midfield and Bobby Redwood playing up front.

The Lions applied early pressure with Redwood’s pace an outlet for the visitors.

And the away side went in front when Keenan Rochester broke down the left to cross and Redwood calmly finished off the post to give the Rye a 1-0 lead

at the break.

The Rye started the second half determined to add to their lead and Rochester went close to doubling the advantage.

Peckham goalkeeper Mick Holman then pulled off two superb saves before Redwood again showed his composure in front of goal to make it 2-0.

The hosts pulled a goal back with ten minutes left from the penalty spot but the Rye hung on to progress.

Gibson said: “It was our best performance of the season, the lads all worked for each other and it was a great team display.”

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk YOU GET the sense that a coach with as much of a penchant for defensive organisation as Gary Rowett will relish the chance to get to work on Thursday.

If Rowett was taking notes from the directors’ box detailing Millwall’s frailties at the back he would have needed a couple of extra pads.

But at the other end of the pitch he will be working with one of the best strikers in the Championship on current form.

Tom Bradshaw’s fifth and sixth league goals of the season leaves him just two behind the Championship's top scorer, Fulham’s £20million Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Bradshaw is well on the way to topping him in the popularity stakes. He seems to be taking every chance he gets. He had two on Tuesday night.

His touch in the box is impeccable.

He got his first goal in the 45th from Mahlon Romeo’s pass, but it was his second that showed just how efficient and lethal he is at the moment when he gets a sight of the net.

With Adam Barrett’s side trailing 2-1 in the 77th minute, Bradshaw sneaked in behind the Cardiff defence on to substitute Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s flicked pass. Bradshaw

knew exactly what he wanted to do and then executed it to absolute perfection, cutting inside the covering Aiden Flint before firing past Neil Etheridge into the corner.

Harris could be forgiven for thinking “if only”. How many league positions would Bradshaw have been worth if he hadn’t suffered that season-ending injury last November? On this evidence quite a few.

A word too on Bodvarsson who has had a relatively slow start to his Lions career after joining not fully fit in pre-season.

His assist was brilliant, showing awareness and then the skill to pull it off. Rowett will surely be thinking he could have a burgeoning partnership there.

Millwall looked so much more dynamic in attack then Bodvarsson came on for Matt Smith, who struggled to make an impact.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SHAUN HUTCHINSON was pleased with Millwall’s character as they came from behind twice to draw with Cardiff on Tuesday.

Smith sent an early header wide then saw Etheridge tip another over, though the whistle had already been blown for a foul. You’d feel for Smith who said the stability at Millwall, after he had seen so many managerial changes at his other clubs, was one of the main reasons he joined.

Rowett wants a team that transitions quickly when they win the ball back and Bradshaw, Bodvarsson and Jed Wallace fit that bill.

Harris put the pieces together for his system but you wondered if Rowett looked at it and saw some square pegs for round holes.

Smith will worry that he could again become the 20-minute impact man, while Aiden O’Brien needs to do more.

There isn’t much Rowett can do now apart from quickly identifying what the team needs in preparation for January’s transfer window.

At clubs of a similar relative stature

in league terms at the time he took over - Burton and Birmingham - Rowett mostly played 4-4-2, defended deep depending on the strength of the opposition and looked to counter quickly with sharp, direct passing. The shortest route from A to B a straight line.

It’s easier said than done but surely it has to be an ambition to add at least one or two quick and technical players to the attack.

Cardiff showed the value of that, particularly with their second goal when Lee Tomlin superbly flicked the ball back inside to Junior Hoilett moving in off the left wing, and he curled a brilliant shot around Bart Bialkowski from 20 yards. For the first the visitors were given too much space by their generous hosts.

Hoilett crossed and Jake Cooper was caught under the ball, Danny Ward taking advantage to head through the legs of Bialkowski.

Bradshaw fired home on the stroke of half-time before Millwall had Bialkowski to thank for keeping them in it when he saved twice in quick succession to deny Flint and then Sean Morrison.

Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock was in typically prickly mood afterwards.

“It is scandalous, really,” he scowled. “I just don't know what to say.

"I have never felt so comfortable at Millwall. We had shot after shot after shot, chances from corner kicks and everywhere.”

Asked if he thought Rowett would prove to be a good appointment, Warnock snapped, “not my business, is it?” before sarcastically adding that if the new boss won his “next six or seven games it will be”.

That might be a tall order at the moment, but Rowett will have noted plenty of positives as he starts his reign.

Tom Bradshaw scored a brace to cancel out Danny Ward’s opener and Junior Hoilett’s second as Adam Barrett’s side grabbed a point.

Hutchinson was impressed with the reaction from the squad after the 3-2 defeat at Brentford last Saturday, particularly amid uncertainty earlier in the week over who would be the next manager.

“I thought we were unlucky to go behind, we started the game really well. We knew it was always going to be a battle and it was,” Hutchinson said.

“We showed character to come from behind twice. It was never going to be an easy fixture, all things considered. We kept our heads down working hard.

“There had been a lot of speculation over what was going on but I thought the boys handled themselves really well and put in another performance for Adam Barrett.

“I think a draw was probably a fair result. “[Brentford] was a tough one to take, that hurt the squad really badly. It’s never nice to concede like that and we all felt we let ourselves down.

“As a player it’s positive when there’s a game coming around the corner and you can crack on with it and forget about it.

“It was hard to take but to be fair to Ads he got us going and

he really did keep the positivity there. At times [Tuesday] we played some good stuff.”

Bradshaw scored his fourth and fifth goals in his last four games.

Hutchinson said: “I’m really, really happy for him. He’s worked really hard pre-season, we see it in training, he’s a top finisher.

“We just need to make sure we keep supplying him the ball and creating chances because he will put the ball in the back of the net and win plenty of games for us.”

Millwall face Stoke on Saturday, and their former centre-forward Lee Gregory.

“We all know his strengths,” Hutchinson said. “He’s a great runner, he’s a great team player.

He’ll be a handful and not that he has a point to prove but it’ll be a fixture for him where he’ll want to have a good game.

“We’ll look at the videos, I’m sure, and have a good game plan.”

Millwall haven’t kept a clean sheet in ten league games, an issue Hutchinson expects new boss Gary Rowett to work on.

Hutchinson said: “We kind of went away from that [keeping clean sheets]. Under Neil Harris we were pretty solid, we were getting a lot of clean sheets.

“It’s probably something that he will address. We’re not happy as a team, we’re aware of it and we’re trying to solve it. In the meantime we’ve got to make sure we’re scoring goals, which we are.

“If we had picked up a result at Brentford, which we should have, we would be five unbeaten with a good points total.

“I’m sure he will address that and hopefully you’ll see more clean sheets.”

New boss's coaching career has been a journey of learning and discovery

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk WHEN HE was a player in the Premier League with Leicester City, Gary Rowett was nicknamed “Textbook” for his keenness to read and learn.

The new Millwall boss realised he enjoyed coaching when he was a seventeen-year-old at Cambridge United after asking Gary Johnson if he could take some coaching sessions in the academy.

Rowett’s coaching career has been marked by a determination to improve and the humility to start at the bottom, despite his top-flight experience. He walked into Derby’s academy, enquired if there were any opportunities, and landed a part-time job coaching the Rams’ under-14s.

Rowett’s first job as a manager was at Burton Albion, where he took over from

Paul Peschisolido in 2012.

Rowett was initially appointed caretaker, from assistant manager, and saw the strain Peschisolido was under after a fourteen-game winless run.

“You could see the pressure he put himself under as a coach, but even as his assistant I didn’t appreciate just how much pressure there is,” Rowett told The Coaches’ Voices website. “How difficult it is to be the guy who is actually in charge. Once you’re a manager, that’s the one thing you learn quickly – to have real empathy with anyone going through a poor period.”

Rowett took Burton into the League Two play-off semi-finals in his first full season in charge and then the play-off final, where they lost to Fleetwood.

His work with the Brewers earned him a chance at Birmingham and there was surprise when he was sacked in December 2016 with the side seventh in the Championship. Perhaps the

value of his work there was only evident after his successor, Gianfranco Zola, resigned just four months later after two wins in 24 games left Blues in 20th place.

Rowett could also have felt aggrieved after he lost his next job, at Stoke, despite just three defeats in the previous seventeen league games.

He was out of work since, doing TV punditry, before Millwall identified him as a potential successor to Neil Harris.

Rowett said: “There are only 92 managers in the League, and they are not easy jobs to get. Even if you doubt yourself, you have to get up the next day and be positive – to have the resilience to keep moving forward.”

Before he had even played senior football for Cambridge he took coaching sessions in their school of excellence and concluded: “It was an early indication that this was something I enjoyed.”

It wasn’t until his late 20s that Rowett really got serious about a potential career in coaching.

“I had become a real learner,” he continued, “very open-minded about the game. Early in my career, I was professional but also cynical – bring in a sports psychologist and I’d think it was a load of rubbish. But now I wanted to learn about anything I thought could benefit me.”

On being called ‘Textbook’, he said: “I took it as a compliment.”

He added: “Over time, I remember reading a lot about Arrigo Sacchi, Jose Mourinho in the early days, Pep

“I made a conscious decision that I didn’t want to go into a job without learning from the bottom up. I’d seen a lot of ex-players take a job on the back of their name, without actually having taken the steps in coaching first. For me, that always looked very difficult.

“So I set about trying to learn as much as I could – and that started with me walking into Derby’s academy and

asking if they had any openings.”

Rowett said his spell with Derby’s under-14s “took over my entire life for twelve months”.

His next coaching job was full-time as he managed the Rams’ under-18s.

Rowett also ran coaching sessions and seminars with Derbyshire FA, teaching aspiring coaches.

“It wasn’t just about imparting knowledge, though, it was about understanding the people in front of me, learning about their strengths, finding out what some could do, and accepting what others couldn’t,” Rowett said.

“Developing that understanding, and building the confidence to speak in front of that many people, have both really helped me as a coach.”

After Burton’s defeat to Fleetwood in 2014 he told his players he was going to watch the victorious opponents lift the trophy at Wembley. He wanted to use that hurt as fuel.

He would experience more play-off agony at Derby.

“Managing a football club is a difficult job, but I think you have to learn to live with the ups and downs of your career and not let it affect you,” Rowett said.

“We’ve seen it plenty of times before, where managers have seemingly failed at one club but gone on to be extremely successful elsewhere.”

Rowett’s Stoke tenure does go down as a failure, however harsh that may look.

Millwall supporters will hope success follows it.

First up is Stoke, who sacked him last January, before a trip to Reading and then a meeting with another former club, south London rivals Charlton Athletic.

The Lions haven’t lost to Charlton in ten games since March 1996, so the pressure is on the new man to maintain that record against an Addicks side that is flying under Lee Bowyer.

Rowett has shrugged off the significance of the Potters being his first match in charge, but there is little doubt he will want to get one over on a club that

dismissed him despite just three defeats in their previous seventeen league games that included a ten-game unbeaten run, the last a 1-0 win over Millwall in December.

Stoke hadn’t won any of their opening ten league games of this campaign under Nathan Jones – Rowett’s successor – before two arrived in succession either side of the international break, impressively at promotion contenders Swansea and then at home to Fulham to really kick-start their season.

Former Millwall striker Lee Gregory had been enduring a miserable time since joining from the Lions on a free transfer in the summer. He failed to score in his first eight league games, but it was his penalty, which capped a fine individual

display, that sealed a 2-0 win over the Cottagers last weekend.

Gregory, 31, revealed he spoke to Jones about how to improve his goal record.

“Performance-wise I think I’m playing really well, but not scoring enough,” Gregory said.

“It was a few videos [with Jones] just to see what I’m doing right, what I’m doing wrong.

“It’s always good. No matter what age you are in football, you’re always learning.

“He’s basically just coaching me on some positions and I’ll take them in and hopefully there will be more goals.

There’s a couple of things I can work on - and I’ll be working on them.”

GEORGE ALEXANDER scored twice and Jiri Skalak played 90 minutes as Millwall’s under-23s continued their unbeaten home run in 2019-20 with a 3-0 Professional Development League victory over Bristol City at Calmont Road on Monday afternoon.

MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh said the importance of retaining the current backroom staff was part of negotiations with new boss Gary Rowett.

After a goalless first-half, Alexander’s brace and Jayden Davis’s strike gave Kevin Nugent’s side a second win in a row.

Alexander opened the scoring in the 63rd minute before Davis, a half-time substitute for Isaac Olaofe, fired in his second in two games. Alexander scored his eighth of the campaign with three minutes left.

Carnall first worked with Gary Rowett at Birmingham.

“I’ll be mic’d up to the bench, giving a lot of tactical feedback to the manager and the coaches in terms of shape and space,” Carnall told the Training Ground Guru website. “The coaches can also come straight into the analysis suite to look at events during the game.

“If we’ve conceded a chance or goal or I feel there’s space we’re not exploiting, they can see exactly what I’m talking about. It means we’re having an input into the game and that’s always positive.

“As a tactical analyst, the most important things are an understanding of the game and a really good relationship with the coaching staff.”

“In between both boxes we’ve had absolutely no problem with his all round play. He’s been wonderful.

“There were certain things he wasn’t doing as well, certain runs in the box for example, and then just an awareness of what’s around him.

“He’s been in wonderful form outside the box and hasn’t had the goals return he deserves, but hopefully that can start ticking over.”

One of Rowett’s challenges at the weekend will be how to stop Gregory being such an influence. Gregory may not have the goal return he wanted so far, but Lions fans know that even when he’s not scoring he is so hard to contain. His work ethic and attitude made him very popular at Millwall, with former Lions boss Neil Harris paying tribute to him towards the end of last season even after it became clear he would leave the club on a free transfer. Despite a relative lack of goals he has proved a very popular team-mate at his new club and with Potters supporters.

Millwall fans will likely give him a positive reception, at least until the action starts.

Rowett will certainly hope for an intimidating atmosphere against his former club.

“The exact reason we used to hate coming here is the reason we wanted to come here,” Rowett said after his appointment was confirmed earlier this week.

Lions fans can make it a miserable return for Gregory.

Lions and Bees face FA charge MILLWALL AND Brentford have been charged by the FA following an incident late on in last Saturday’s game at Griffin Park.

The incident was sparked when Brentford players felt Lions winger Jed Wallace had caught Bees goalkeeper David Raya with a late tackle. Players from both sides joined the fracas in front of the away end. It took a couple of minutes before calm was restored.

Brentford came from two goals down with seven minutes left to pinch a 3-2 win in injury-time.

“Brentford and Millwall have been charged for being in breach of FA Rule E20,” an FA statement read.

“It is alleged that both clubs failed to ensure that its players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour in the 91st minute.”

Both clubs have until 6pm this Thursday, October 24 to respond.

Former Lions skipper would have accepted challenge

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STEVE MORISON has admitted he would have taken the Millwall job if it had been offered to him.

Former Lions skipper Morison retired from playing last week and took up a coaching role in his former club Northampton’s academy.

Morison left Millwall in the summer to join Shrewsbury on a one-year deal but called time on his eighteen-year playing career to start his coaching journey.

Morison applied for the vacant manager’s job at another of his former clubs, Stevenage, but was told he needed more experience. The former Norwich and Leeds forward didn’t register interest in the Millwall job after Neil Harris’

departure, admitting it was “a bit out of my reach”.

“I put my name forward for the Stevenage job,” Morison told the Not The Top 20 podcast. “I did that officially a couple of weeks ago. But I got a response that they were going to look for someone, if they don’t stick with the caretaker (Mark Sampson), with more experience.

“I’ve been advised by them to go and gain some experience as a number two. So I’ve had my first knockback in the managerial world, which is fine, I’m going to get that.

“I was obviously disappointed on a personal level because I think it’s somewhere that would have been a great starting block, especially as I have an affiliation with the fans there.

“I’m not going to go and be a number two at another club because that’s not where I

see myself. I see myself as a number one.

“The biggest thing I’m lacking is experience but you have to get experience somehow. I’ll keep knocking on a few more doors and see what happens.

“Until that point I will be throwing myself fully into the level I’m at now and coaching the academy boys.

“Millwall was a bit of my reach. Don’t get me wrong, if they’d rung me and said, ‘Steve, we want you to do it’, then I would have done it. But I didn’t want to put my name forward because I don’t think I’m 100 per cent ready for it yet, not that you’re ever ready to manage Millwall.

“I’d too much of a relationship with Neil Harris and all that kind of a situation, just leaving the club, it didn’t sit right at the right time to put my name forward for something like that.

“If they’d asked me to help I would definitely have helped.”

Morison played just nine games for the Shrews before calling it a day, but has no regrets.

“It’s a decision that I’ve made so it sits really well with me. It’s not something I’ve been forced into. I look back and think I had a really good time, it was mainly highs. The lowest moment was leaving Northampton first time round.

“They say all good things have to come to an end and it’s come to an end for me now.

I’m really pleased that I’ve been able to go straight back into work. I feel at home, I feel comfortable there, it’s where I spent a big part of my career.

“I just hope that now I can pass on a bit of what I’ve learned. I’m sure I’ve learned something over the years.”

Rowett, the full-time successor to Neil Harris, watched from the directors’ box on Tuesday night as Tom Bradshaw twice equalised for caretaker Adam Barrett’s side to earn a 2-2 draw with Cardiff City at The Den. The squad were due to have their first training session under Rowett on Thursday ahead of this Saturday’s clash with Stoke.

Speaking after the game on Tuesday, Hutchinson said: “We’ve not seen him, obviously Ads was taking the game [against Cardiff]. [Rowett’s] going to come in Thursday and we’ll probably have a meeting with him.
