DULWICH HAMLET ended a 111-year wait to clinch promotion from the Isthmian League last Sunday, after a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout win over Hendon at their temporary home in Tooting.

Fans poured into East Dulwich on Sunday night, bringing Goose Green roundabout to a virtual standstill.

Later they were joined by Hamlet manager Gavin Rose and his victorious players, as the club celebrated clinching a place in National League South next season.

Labour tighten grip, but will still face scrutiny

C

ONGRATULATIONS TO Southwark Labour for retaining control of the council - and for pushing the opposition Lib Dems and Tories out of the south of the borough.

But the Lib Dems will also see last Thursday’s results as something of a rearguard victory - they retained their presence on the council and prevented Labour from completing a clean sweep of the borough. In the interests of accountability and democracy, it’s surely better for residents to have opposition voices within the ranks. You do also, once again, have to question how a party such as the Greens, who secured tens of thousands of votes, can have no voice due to our electoral system.

The election was overshadowed by the sudden death of Conservative Toby Eckersley just days before votes were cast this kind, compassionate man went beyond the confines of his party and was wellrespected across the board. He would have been dismayed to have seen the Tories wiped off the face of Southwark for the first time in its history.

So far, at least. The ward he was contesting at London Bridge will hold its delayed election in June. All three main parties will contest it fiercely, each for their own particular reasons.

Victorious on the pitch despite the battle for survival

ELL DONE to Gavin Rose and his magnificent Dulwich Hamlet players after they put all the club’s off-field worries to one side to win promotion to National League South last Sunday.

Caught up in a dispute earlier this season between the owners of their ground, Meadow, and Southwark Council, Hamlet were turfed out of Champion Hill. They found a temporary home at Tooting & Mitcham FC and have created memories there to last a lifetime.

In March, fans congregated at Goose Green roundabout to walk to Champion Hill as they fought to save the club, and on Sunday night the spot was the scene of jubilant celebrations.

Gavin and his players joined supporters in East Dulwich to toast promotion after 111 years in the Isthmian League following goalkeeper Amadou Tangara’s heroics and Dipo Akinyemi’s winning spot-kick against Hendon.

The club still faces a summer of uncertainty as the padlocks remain in place at Champion Hill, but it goes to show how far a refusal to back down in the face of adversity can take you.

Hamlet fans will continue to fight for their cause, and the club will continue to be a symbol of community spirit and resistance.

Actor starts selling world’s hottest chillies online and down The Blue

EVER WONDERED what it’s like to try the hottest chilli on earth? Now you can!

Eddie Webber, a Bermondsey actor best known for roles in classic films like The Firm and The Business, has swapped cameras for capsicum with a new passion project: a new online chilli shop.

Eddie launched the website, ChilliEd, in April with his business partner and fellow chilli lover, Darren Tassell.

They sell 10g bags of the world’s three hottest chillies and a 12g mixed bag, which so far has been the most popular.

The Carolina Reaper is officially the fieriest, measuring 2.2 million scoville heat units (SHU) – the measure used for capsaicin concentration, which gives chilli peppers their fire.

How hot is that?

“Uncontrollable snot and saliva hot,” according to Eddie’s website.

The Reaper out-blisters the second hottest pod, the Trinidad Scorpion still an eye watering 1.2 million SHU. If you wanted to start slow, the Naga Ghost, cultivated in Nagaland in India, might seem comparatively mild at just over one million SHU. Be warned though - it’s still four hundred times hotter than Tabasco

Sauce. Farmers in India even put it on their fences to deter curious elephants.

Eddie said: “You have to treat them with respect. But if you know how to use them sensibly, chillies add this beautiful dimension to any food, even something like spaghetti

One traditional favourite locals can now try with a hint of this heat is pie and mash.

The Bermondsey Pie and Mash Company, which has been selling out since it launched in The Blue market, Southwark Park Road in

Bermondsey, last month, is now using Eddie’s chillies in their new chilli vinegar.

“People love it,” said Tammy Jukes, who started the The Bermondsey Pie and Mash Company with her husband, Jamie. “We just thought it would be great for two local

businesses to join forces and support each other.”

Eddie is equally excited about the collaboration.

“It’s joyous to be involved with local people trying to revive a tradition for the area while also introducing a new concept,” he said.

MAYOR CALLS FOR MORE POLICE AFTER TEENAGER IS SHOT DEAD

17-year-old was found on the street on Saturday evening with gunshot wounds

SADIQ KHAN joined a silent march in memory of seventeenyear-old Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton, who was fatally shot in Kennington on Saturday, amid calls for extra police powers and finding.

The Mayor of London visited the Brandon Estate, off John Ruskin Street, to show support for Rhyhiem’s mother, Pretana Morgan, and was joined by MPs Harriet Harman, Neil Coyle and David Lammy.

Supporters and well-wishers marched from the Kennington estate to Peckham, calling to end the spate of violence in the capital.

A spokesperson for the Mayor of London told the News at the time of going to press: “Sadiq stood alongside the family of Rhyhiem Barton,

(pictured), last night as they held a silent march in his memory.

“Over the past few days we have seen a number of violent incidents across our city and, tragically, Rhyhiem lost his life.

“The Mayor’s heart goes out to his mother Pretana Morgan, his friends and family and the entire community on the Brandon Estate, as well as the other victims who have been injured.

“This violent crime in London and across our country is simply unacceptable. It cannot be tolerated.

“Keeping Londoners safe is Sadiq’s top priority – he remains in constant contact with the Metropolitan Police and is reassured that they are doing everything they can to bring those responsible to justice and to protect us all.

“However, the police service in London, like the rest of the country, is overstretched and under-resourced.

“Sadiq refuses to accept that nothing can be done to stem the appalling tide of violent killings we are seeing on our streets and together with the police, community groups, victims and their families and Londoners, will continue to work ceaselessly to tackle violent crime.”

His comments were echoed by local MP Neil Coyle, who told the News: “I am working with the family, community, police, Mayor of London, council, and

all willing to help to try and prevent any escalation of violence and to bring this teenager’s killer to justice.

“I will be seeking extra police resources and powers to tackle the rising national problem of violent crime.”

Rhyhiem Ainsworth Barton, aged seventeen, was found with a gunshot injury in Warham Street on Saturday, May 5, after reports of gunshots heard in nearby Cooks Road, Kennington, at about 6.05pm.

London Ambulance Service and Air Ambulance provided first aid at the scene but Rhyhiem was pronounced dead at 6.56pm.

No arrests have yet been made and police inquiries continue, with witnesses and anyone with information urged to come forward.

Speaking outside Peckham police station on Sunday, May 6, Southwark Borough Commander Detective Chief Superintendent Simon Messinger said: “My thoughts are with Rhyhiem's family, friends and the wider community at this devastating time.

“Our homicide team are carrying out an investigation to catch the people responsible.

“This investigation is fast paced and progressing all the time.

"The violence used has rightly caused concern and we are doing all we can to

"Locally we are also employing intelligence-led search powers under Section 60 – my colleagues on the streets are using this power really effectively, seizing knives, stopping cars of individuals carrying weapons and making arrests.

"Violence has no place on our streets. If you are carrying a weapon in Southwark linked to gang activity, you need to know that we can and will take action against you.

"I want the community to help us tackle this problem.

“As a father, community member and a police officer, I will do absolutely all I can to keep young people and the wider community safe. We can only achieve this if we work together."

Heated scenes at the Lido

THE RECORD-BREAKING Bank Holiday heat caused problems for Lido-goers in Herne Hill on Monday after a group skipped the queue and broke through the barriers.

A Twitter user posting under the name Victor_YT contacted the News via Twitter, writing: “Sorry @Brockwell_Lido but we had to all go in by force, five hour queue then telling us we had to leave was pissing everyone off…”, and shared a picture of what appeared to be officers attending the scene.

A London Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed police were called at 5.02pm on Monday, May 7, to reports of a group of people rushing past door staff at the Lido, on Dulwich Road.

Police confirmed that officers attended and spoke to the group, advice was given, and the group left the Lido with offences disclosed and no reported injuries.

Fusion Lifestyle, which runs the Lido, did not provide a comment at the time of going to press.

Reports of ‘shots fired at cyclist’ ‘Stolen van collides with vehicles on bridge’

A TRIDENT investigation has been launched after reports of shots fired on Blenheim Grove last Friday.

Police officers were called at around 11.20pm on Friday, May 4, to reports of gunshots on Blenheim Grove near Peckham Rye station, with the area then cordoned off.

The shutters of a shop in Blenheim Grove were damaged, but there were no reported injuries.

A Met spokesperson confirmed three male suspects rode away from the scene on two mopeds.

It is believed that one of the males had fired a shot towards a man who was riding a bicycle on Blenheim Grove, but the shot missed and struck the shop.

Trident officers investigating the incident have appealed for witnesses and anyone with information to call detectives at Trident South via 101, quoting ref 9229/ May4, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

A MAN was set to appear in court after allegedly stealing a van and colliding with a number of vehicles on London Bridge, before falling in the River Thames.

A 23-year-old man, from SE1, was set to appear at Camberwell Green Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, May 8, charged with aggravated vehicle taking, driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs, and having no insurance.

Police were called at about 8am on Saturday, May 5, to a report of a theft of a van seen heading in the direction of London Bridge.

Officers say a van collided with a number of vehicles including a bus before the driver made off on foot.

The male driver is said to have fallen into the River Thames from London Bridge.

Local officers, the Marine Policing Unit, the Coastguard and London Ambulance Service attended the scene.

The man was recovered from the water and treated at the scene by paramedics before being taken to hospital.

He was arrested on suspicion of theft of a motor vehicle and later charged as above.

No one else was reported injured during the incident.

Supporter to visit ground after Millwall fans put aside rivalry for young cancer sufferer

A WEST Ham fan will visit Millwall and Dulwich Hamlet during a 77-mile non-stop walk to raise money for a young football supporter suffering from cancer.

Patrick O’Connor is walking to all of London’s professional football clubs to help three-year-old Hammers fan Isla Caton, who has rare childhood cancer neuroblastoma, to get the treatment she needs.

The 53-year-old construction site manager will walk for about 30 hours straight this weekend, starting at the Bobby Moore statue near the site of West Ham’s old ground in Upton Park on Saturday and finishing up at the club’s current home of London Stadium, in Stratford, the following day.

Speaking to the News ahead of the walk, Patrick said: “Isla’s uncle is a fellow West Ham supporter and old friend of mine so I’ve known him for years and when Isla fell ill everyone ran off and tried to come up with their own ways of raising money.

“I’ve got two children and when there’s a child involved it pulls the heartstrings more.

“I’m doing the walk on my own but if anyone wanted to walk with me through the night section I wouldn’t say ‘no’ to that.

“The only real concern is that I’m not expecting the route to be very picturesque; I think the night-time section will be from west London up to Wembley Stadium.”

Patrick, from Southend-on-Sea, is hoping to raise £4,000 to help Isla’s

family hit their fundraising target.

Her family, who live in Stratford, had initially hoped to raise £192,000 to send her overseas for a potentially life-saving bivalent vaccine which could help prevent her cancer from returning once she is in remission.

However, they later shared the devastating news that Isla’s cancer had relapsed and they are now aiming to raise £400,000 as she will need additional treatment not available on the NHS. In total, four Millwall fans – Nick Hart, Bill Slack, Jamie Pearce and Tom Munday – have put the clubs’ rival aside to raise £27,300 in total for Isla.

“It’s no secret the feelings between the two clubs but it’s been amazing that two out of three high fundraisers so far have been Millwall supporters – it’s great,” said Patrick.

“We’ve had a fair amount of money

from Charlton supporters as well who seem to feel some kind of affinity.”

Patrick will set off at 7am on Saturday, May 12, and aims to finish by the time West Ham’s 3pm kick-off

against Everton on Sunday.

KickOff@3, which is now in its second year and has various tournaments held by police forces across the country, was

established by Barnet-based Met PC Michael Wallace alongside Ashley Levien, who runs his own social inclusion project called Suberbos Community.

Before the start of each tournament, the players and supporters take part in a oneminute silence to remember the young lives that have been lost through knife crime.

Chief Superintendent Dave Stringer, head of community engagement, said: "The Met is delighted to support the Kickoff@3 event this year.

“This is a fantastic community-led

initiative which aims to bring young people together in a safe and sporting environment and help them apply the lessons of sporting success to develop their lives with purpose."

Ashley Levien added: "KickOff@3 is a powerful initiative that brings young people from all walks of life together and gets them involved in something positive whilst engaging with and breaking down barriers between their local police forces and those in a position of authority, which I believe makes us quite unique, especially in today's climate.”

Labour retains control of council LOCAL ELECTIONS 2018

LABOUR HELD on to control of the council in last week’s local elections – and blue had been wiped off the Southwark electoral map for the first time in history.

Southwark Labour group leader Peter John was jubilant in his victory speech in the early hours of Friday after the results were announced.

It wasn’t the Labour whitewash that some thought it might be – and for the first time in history there are no Conservative councillors in Southwark. Though there is one ward still to be contested, this is not a Tory stronghold.

The provisional turnout was 33.8 per cent for the 22 out of 23 wards counted, with Labour winning 49 seats, while the opposition Liberal Democrats did better than the experts predicted, holding on to eleven seats.

seats.

It is still too soon to say how the parties performed over all as there are still three seats up for grabs in London Bridge & West Bermondsey ward.

An election will be held in that ward on June 14 after Conservative candidate Toby Eckersley sadly died unexpectedly.

A minute’s silence was observed for the former Dulwich Village politician during the count last week, after tributes flooded in for the “quintessential Englishman” earlier in the week.

Tory-free zone and the people of Southwark have rejected Theresa May’s government and all that she stands for.

“After eight years Labour has retained control of Southwark Council; we have one more seat than we did in 2014, we have eliminated the Tories, and reduced the Lib Dems.”

The re-elected Champion Hill councillor said he was “confident” that Labour would take the last three remaining seats in London Bridge & West Bermondsey next month.

“They have chosen a council that’s on the side of hard-working families and not a government that is only interested in a hard Brexit,” he said.

“We know there’s so much more we need to do to win the trust and confidence of our public and we will do that over the next four years.”

Speaking to the News, he added: “There have always been Conservatives in Southwark even if you go back to when the council was formed in 1965 and at one point there were quite a lot of Conservatives in Southwark. That says a lot about where they are as a party.

“I think [Brexit] is a big contributing factor and Dulwich Village people were saying to us on the doorstep they were really uncomfortable with where the government was with Brexit, so it’s not surprising in some ways.

“All of the predictions were that we could take even more seats but I was always more sceptical - we still ended up with more than we had in 2014 and it’s the best result since 1982 and we still have three seats left to go.”

The Lib Dems believe they have a real chance of increasing their overall numbers once the London Bridge & West Bermondsey seat is contested in June, and that they have “defied all expectations” and “strengthened” their position.

“There were many other seats where we came close to winning, and in London Bridge and West Bermondsey we have a real chance to make even further gains,” said

Southwark Liberal Democrat group leader councillor Anood Al-Samerai.

“Labour’s central aim in this campaign was to make Southwark a Lib Dem-free zone. In that, they have clearly failed.”

The Green party had candidates standing in every ward in Southwark, and in St Giles ward, their lead candidate Eleanor Margolies achieved 31 per cent of the vote with 1,420 votes – a 13.8 per cent swing to the Greens since the 2014 election.

Ms Margolies, co-chair of Southwark Green party, said: “I am immensely grateful to the people who took the time to talk to me on the doorstep about their concerns and hopes, and to everyone who voted for me.

“We will continue to work with the amazing community activists in Southwark who protect trees and green spaces, defend small businesses and council housing, and scrutinise the actions of the council.”

Rosie Beattie, chair of Southwark UKIP group, said the election result was “disappointing nationally, but came as no surprise” and that “there is still a need for UKIP”.

The News spoke to Southwark Conservative leader Michael Mitchell, who declined to comment.

AN EAST Dulwich school has named its music venue after a celebrated composer who taught in the area in the early twentieth century.

James Allen’s Girls’ School (JAGS) will officially open its Community Music Centre in September, offering facilities to both the school and public for music of all genres.

are still widely performed today.

The venue will have the capacity to seat audiences of 500 people and provide professional lighting and sound equipment.

There will also be ample space for performers to rehearse ahead of their shows at the centre with fifteen practice rooms. Vaughan Williams (pictured) arrived at JAGS as director of music in 1904 and later introduced his friend Gustav Holst to the school.

Holst went on to teach music there for more than fifteen years and the hall in the main school building is named after him.

Headteacher Sally-Anne Huang said:

“We can’t wait to open the doors to the new music centre and share it with our neighbours. This is not just about JAGS, it will also be here for other local schools, musicians and community groups.

“It is such a privilege to be able to commemorate Ralph Vaughan Williams in this way.

“Having the Vaughan Williams Auditorium alongside the Holst Hall will be a fitting tribute reflecting the exceptional musical heritage laid down by these great names and continued here at JAGS into the twenty first century.”

Artist creates Stink Map of area detailing its pongy past

A MAP detailing the historical ‘stinks’ of Bermondsey Street has been created by an artist.

The Stink Map was created by Steve Overbury, 65, an artist and designer from Dulwich, and details whiffs from the olfactory delights of spices from the area’s docking days, to the foul stench of dog poo used in its leather tanning past.

Steve moved to the area from Essex 40 years ago, around the same time as his design partner, Dougal Gordon. Dougal was looking at the origins of some of Bermondsey’s old buildings for his own series of drawings, which led Steve to start researching Bermondsey Street.

“I just got completely fascinated by all the industries that were here,” Steve told the News.

The city’s leather tanneries, where urine and dog faeces were applied to the skins to make them supple, were all huddled around the now-lost Neckinger River.

Sarson’s Vinegar Factory, which only closed in 1992, an India Rubber works and abattoirs were also on the

street, together with Christy’s hat manufacturers, where the use of noxious chemicals like sulphuric acid is thought to have driven the hatters mad. The map shows some of the more fragrant factories that were in Bermondsey as well; Crosse and Blackwell’s Branston’s pickle was developed here; and down the road, Peek Frean made some of the country’s most well known biscuits.

According to the Rotherhithe and Bermondsey Local History Society, initiatives like Steve’s Stink Map help to give an alternative way to tell the history of the area which will appeal to different audiences and wider age ranges.

“The area of Rotherhithe and Bermondsey has a fascinating history, and many clues to its past are still visible, which encourages interest in what has gone here before,” says Society chair, Michael Reardon.

Steve’s Stink Map is one of several artistic projects set in Bermondsey that he has worked on together with Dougal.

Summer by the River from June to September

LONDON’S LARGEST free festival, Summer by the River, will run next to the Thames from June to September.

The festival, run by London Bridge City, is 2018’s answer to London Riviera and will be packed with a programme of weekly events including live entertainment, an

outdoor cinema and fitness classes.

The riverside area stretching along the Thames from London Bridge to Tower Bridge will be transformed into an English country garden theme for the event.

A rotating lineup of food and drinks vendors will also be on hand.

Summer by the River will run for three months from June 1 to September 1 across London Bridge City, SE1 2DB.

CAB DRIVING isn’t just for ‘white, middle aged men from Essex’, says a Walworth dad who has set up a Knowledge school in south-east London.

Everton Thomas, aged 34, lives near Woolwich but grew up on Walworth’s Grosvenor Terrace, where his mum is still based, and also has family around the Old Kent Road.

He passed the infamously tough The Knowledge in July last year, after two years and eight months learning London’s A-Z off by heart.

Now he’s set up his own school on Walworth’s East Street to help other young cabbies learn the trade – and inspire men and women from different background to help break the stereotype that black cab drivers are all “white and middle aged men from Essex.”

Everton told the News: “I was a bus driver for ten years but I wanted to be my own boss and have flexibility with my family life, and both provider and father to my daughter and son.

“You have to take it on and teach yourself the streets, bars, points of interest and in an exam think on your feet. There is a lot to it but you learn a lot about the history of London that we can all take for granted.

“It is quite life-changing. The average age of a cab driver is 57, and the stereotype is that they’re from Essex. I never thought I would be able to do it. In the beginning I was completely on my own, for the first year, following the books.

“I registered with TfL and then started going to classes, which was quite a daunting experience, but I went from strength to strength.

“I had to work all the time for four hours at school and then hours working at home.

“It is tough-going and the drop-out rate is 70 per cent. Only three in ten

actually finish The Knowledge.”

And Everton credits his family including his wife Lisa, son Carter and daughter Harleigh - with supporting him through the two years. But it was all worth it when he was presented with his badge at a TfL presentation in July, 2017.

The Knowledge was introduced as a requirement for taxi drivers in 1865, and mastering it today involves learning over 25,000 streets in the A to Z. Everton says applications are at an “all-time low” due to increased competition from private hire, but believes uncertainty over Uber’s longterm status is encouraging more people to get back into the trade.

Although there are Knowledge schools across London, with ones in south-west, including Rankins in Brixton and The Knowledge Practise

in Tooting. The vast majority are based north of the river.

“For me it is still a life-changing experience and a life-changing career.

“I think there is a place for private hire and also a place for London cab drivers. Private hire is a lift from A to B but a cab driver, it is a service.

“They can tell you about the history of buildings and can get you out of the traffic.”

To help others take on the challenge, Everton set up his own not-for-profit Beginner Knowledge School, on East

Street in August 2017, where he says 70 registered trainees are being put through their paces.

He said: “The Knowledge has done great things for me, and my school cofounders and were calling on more young people, men and women to take the plunge and sculpt their futures in the right way, join the elite and become proud London Cab drivers.”

The Beginner Knowledge School is held at on Mondays & Wednesdays from 6pm at Congreve Hall, Tatum St, SE17.

Care home rated ‘Outstanding’ in first inspection DULWICH

A CARE home company in Dulwich has been rated “outstanding” in its first ever inspection.

Home Instead Dulwich and Croydon provides in-home care to older people from carers who are matched with clients who share similar interests, personalities and backgrounds.

The Care Quality Commission report praised the company for “supporting people in creative ways to live full lives and to take part in activities that were important to

them”, with one carer taking their client to the National Gallery and others attending football matches and joining local jewellery-making groups.

Bhavin Patel, the business’ owner and a former pharmacist, said: “It is important to us that our clients are encouraged to maintain their independence and keep doing the things they love.

“Just because someone is older does not mean to say they are not still the person they once were, and we never lose sight of that.

“We are beyond thrilled to be rated outstanding at our first ever

inspection, and it is a testament to all the hard work and dedication of our wonderful staff.”

The company was also praised for its work with people diagnosed with dementia.

Home Instead Dulwich and Croydon is a member of the Croydon Dementia Action Alliance, and trains local businesses, charities, GP and hospital workers to support people living with dementia.

Mr Patel said: “People sometimes see behavioural problems with dementia, but it is not the behaviour that is the problem – the challenge is how you manage it.”

HERITAGE GROUPthe Peckham Society are calling for the High Street building damaged by fire last month to be fully restored to its former glory.

Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters tackled a blaze on Peckham High Street in the early hours of April 17, and although the building at 62 Peckham High Street was badly damaged, no one was injured.

The building is believed to be one of the oldest, timber framed houses on Peckham High Street, now the upper floor above butchers United Meat Market.

Kent clay tiles, putting in ‘six over six’ Georgian style sash windows, repairing historic weatherboarding and timber fascia, and either leaving the rendered wall or painting it a brighter tone.

A historic painting, from around 1820, which was recently found in Australia and sent to the society by a well-wisher, shows the terrace in its original condition, when its townhouses still had full gardens stretching out onto the main road.

The society believes that the houses could be traced back as far back as the seventeenth century, with O’Looney telling the News: “This house is a remarkable survivor from when Peckham was a small Surrey village.

“Let’s hope this house can be carefully restored, and what fabric has survived is not lost.”

CAMBERWELL: King’s College Hospital has appointed an interim chief executive.

Peter Herring began the role at the NHS foundation trust on Wednesday, May 9.

Interim chairman Ian Smith said: “With over 35 years’ experience of working in the NHS, I am very pleased that Peter is joining King’s.

“His passion for patient care and public health is coupled with a proven track record of strong leadership, performance improvement and financial expertise that will strengthen the existing leadership team.

“He will play a pivotal role in moving the trust onto a more robust and sustainable financial and performance footing.”

Mr Herring’s last chief executive role was interim chief executive of Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHSFT where he helped move the trust out of special measures. Previously he has been chief executive at Shrewsbury & Telford Hospital NHS Trust, Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust, and Liverpool Women’s Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

In December, King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust chair Lord Bob Kerslake resigned days before the trust was placed into special measures for finance by NHS Improvement.

The regulator said the financial situation of the trust had “deteriorated very seriously over recent months” – although Lord Kerslake blamed its struggles on an historic lack of funding.

The trust has launched its search for a permanent chief executive officer.

A GROUP of older ladies taking part in weekly flower arranging sessions in Rotherhithe have told the News how special the club is to them– and their hope that local businesses could help them raise funds for a special day out.

Nellie’s Club was set up by florist and teacher Debbie Western, aged 58, to help ladies over 60 get together at Docklands Settlements to learn flower arranging and socialise with each other.

The News was kindly invited to last Friday’s session, where the group made a beautiful decoration called “The Handbag”.

There was lots of laughter in the room, but it was also clear just how much the weekly outing means many of Ms Western’s learners.

Pat Barnes, who has lived in Bermondsey for “30-odd years”, said she liked the community-feel and mixing with people from the same age group and “having a bit of fun”.

Linda Lever from Shipwright Road, said she joined “to meet friends and socialise with people and have a nice time”, and had really enjoyed all the special events including raffles, bingo and a Christmas lunch.

She described Nellie’s as “like a little community”, saying it was particularly important for “people who are not well and lonely.”

Anne Kenny, who is a carer for her husband, had never tried flower arranging before joining Nellies.

She said: “It gives you something to focus on. It is my time, time when I’m not looking after somebody.”

Jean Mathers, from Rotherhithe Street, said “I can’t go to many things because I can’t see well, so I sit at the front. It is nice at the end when you produce something.”

While eighty-three-years-young Joan Earl, who has lived in her flat on Rotherhithe New Road since she was a baby, told the News she had enjoyed learning a new skill.

Her father had been a docker and she also worked locally, at Arthur Smart flag makers in Bermondsey, for 36 years.

As she put the finishing touches to her floral decoration, she told us all about some of her favourite moments at work, recalling the time she met the Rolling Stones, who were playing in a studio underneath the building: “While I was splitting material Charlie Watts asked me “How do you keep a straight line?” and I replied “same as you, with the drums. It

Debbie founded Nellie’s club after her mother passed away, saying her mum had always supported older people in the community.

The florist, who taught at Southwark College for 22 years, says she is delighted with how the club has grown “I’m really happy with the way it has developed and it still has got so much more potential.”

Two weeks ago, the club – which has members from many different nationalities and cultural backgrounds joined forces with the Okey Cokey Club,

run by Age UK Bromley and Greenwich to meet with Nepalese Ghurkha veterans, wives, widows and families in a special event at Wade Hall on the Dickens Estate.

The Okey Cokey club’s project coordinator Pauline Cahill, is Debbie’s best friend, and they hope they can hold more joint events like it.

Whilst reminiscing with the News about the beanos dockers would go on in days gone by, the ladies said they would love to have another day trip away, joking they could make it their own “floral beano.”

CELEBRITIES WILL battle it out in a charity football match at The Den to raise money for those affected by last year’s terror attacks in London and Manchester.

Millwall’s fan on the board Micky Simpson and Andy Pheby, a Lions fan in Manchester, decided to do something in aid of the survivors, victims and their families and the emergency services affected by attacks, which changed the

lives of dozens of people last year.

With the help of Millwall fans Shane Pearson, also based in Manchester, and Rosie Spearpoint, the duo have organised The Wonderwall Cup: a charity football event aimed at bringing the two cities together in solidarity.

The organisers wanted to celebrate the lives of the people lost in the attacks, as well as the country’s resilience and how the nation pulls together in times of need.

Fourteen people were killed and more than 100 others injured in attacks across

London in Westminster, London Bridge and Borough Market, outside Finsbury Park mosque and at Parsons Green tube station last year.

Twenty two people, including a number of children, were also killed by a suicide bomber after an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena on May 22.

The Wonderwall Cup, which will be held at Millwall’s stadium The Den on Sunday, May 27, will involve a series of matches including an emergency services game between London

Ambulance Service vs Manchester Ambulance Service.

The last game will be a special celebrity match kicking off at 3pm, with ex-footballers and celebrities including Danny Jones, Anthony Quinlan, Alex Rae, Paul Dickov, Rocket, Dan Osborne, Jake Quickenden, and Jamie O'Hara. ManLikeHaks, Mo The Comedian, Jamie Shawyer, Stevo The Madman, Dom Lever, Callum Best and Danny Miller will also try out their football skills on the pitch, and London Lions manager will be none other than

Tributes continue to pour in for former councillor

TRIBUTES HAVE continued to pour in after the unexpected death of long-standing former Conservative councillor, and local election candidate for London Bridge and West Bermondsey, Toby Eckersley, MBE.

Mr Eckersley died suddenly two weekends ago, forcing the ward election in London Bridge and West Bermondsey to be postponed while elections across the rest of the borough went ahead, with a minute’s silence observed at the count in his memory.

Mr Eckersley was a well-known former councillor for Dulwich Village Ward who, in recent years, had given his support to the Aylesbury Estate leaseholders fighting Southwark Council’s Compulsory Purchase Order to buy and demolish their homes as part of the estate’s regeneration.

Beverley Robinson, an Aylesbury leaseholder and former chair of the Action Group, told the News: “I would like to echo what everybody

else has said, that he was the quintessential English gentleman and he was just so passionate and focused about the fight for refurbishment of the Aylesbury and ensuring that leaseholders got a fairer rehousing offer.

“He helped us so much and was the one who looked at the human rights element of the campaign for the first time, and highlighting my personal circumstances as the example.

“Toby was integral and instrumental in achieving the new policy created by the council too, and I spoke to him almost every couple of days. I really miss him!

“We had our disagreements because of his passion for the cause, but he was so good, gentle and a helpful individual to me and I can’t fault him in any way and his advice was invaluable.

Mr Eckersley was also an active member of the Walworth Society.

Jeremy Leach, on behalf of the group, told the News: “Toby was a pillar of Southwark life, having stood as a councillor in Dulwich between 1977 and 1986 and then again from 1990 to 2014.

“He was also closely involved in the Walworth Society from its inception in 2012 and attended many of our meetings, helping keep us on the straight and narrow. We will all miss him enormously.”

Roberta Judd contacted the News, last week to say: “I had the great pleasure of teaching Tobias (as I knew him) every Thursday, at Cardiac rehab for many years, not only at St Jude's but also at the Castle leisure centre.

“I saw him for his very last class on Thursday, April 26, and explained to him that I wouldn't be seeing him for a while as I was going in myself for a procedure at Guy's on my knee. He said that he would really miss me and wished me luck.

“He was such a special gentleman and relaxed after his workout to a piece of music that he loved so very much, no one else in the class was aware that I played it especially for him: Mozart Piano concerto No. 21, also played in the film Elvira Madigan.

“I will miss him a great deal, his humility, his politeness, his gentle sense of humour and delight in coming to my class.”

The ward election for London Bridge and West Bermondsey will be held on Thursday, June 14, Southwark Council has confirmed, but at the time of going to print, the News had not received details of Mr Eckersley’s funeral.

RESIDENTS WHO are lobbying for Camberwell station to reopen staged a demonstration on Camberwell Green last Saturday, to highlight the impact of high levels of traffic pollution in the area.

The group hopes Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes will hand a 2000-signature petition to reopen the station to the Minister of State for Transport, Jo Johnson, on May 15, Campaigner Sophy Tayler, says: “We are worried TfL is shunting this important project into the sidings.”

She says documents obtained by the group from TfL focusing on the proposals do not include full air pollution and traffic studies.

She told the News: “The studies fail to take seriously traffic pollution, slow bus services, growing population and difficult access to hospitals in Camberwell.

“These issues will continue unless there is a step change in transport options.

“More rail users come from outside London, than get on at Camberwell, so we don’t get a high enough benefit cost ratio to boost the business case for reopening.

“But this could mean inner city Camberwell never gets a meaningful chance to improve transport options and air quality.”

The group says the legal EU limit for nitrogen dioxide is 40 micrograms per cubic metre, but the level recorded in May 2018 outside McDonald’s restaurant in Camberwell was 84.3 micrograms per cubic metre, according to pollution monitors installed by

The inaugural Southwark Business Excellence Awards in association with Lewisham Southwark College attracted 171 submissions from 122 different companies in the borough.

One hundred businesses have now been shortlisted across fourteen categories to go through to the second round of judging, which will require entrants to undergo a 30 minute interview.

The overall winners – including the Southwark Business of the Year – will be exclusively announced at the glittering Gala Dinner and Charity Ball awards ceremony on 21st June,2018.

‘Bend’ is named in the UK’s worst roundabouts

ELEPHANT AND Castle has been named as one of the UK’s worst roundabouts - despite now technically being a “bend”.

According to recovery firm 24/7 Vehicle Rescue, Elephant and Castle roundabout “deserves a place on the list due to the havoc is wreaked over the years.”

The roundabout underwent a redesign in 2015, and is now described as a “bend”.

NEW APP TO PREDICT PRETERM BIRTH

A NEW app that helps to predict if a woman is going to give birth prematurely could reduce unnecessary treatment and hospital admissions.

Researchers from Guy’s and St Thomas’ and King's College London developed the QUiPP app to help healthcare professionals identify and treat women who are more likely to give birth prematurely.

Around 60,000 babies are born prematurely in the UK each year, putting them at a higher risk of developing health problems.

Current guidelines advise treating all women 30 weeks pregnant and under who present symptoms of threatened preterm labour, even though many will not go on to deliver early.

The app calculates the risk of premature birth using an algorithm that assesses several factors, including a history of previous premature births, a cervical length measurement (the neck of the womb) and level of fetal fibronectin (a ‘glue’ that binds the amniotic sac to the lining of the uterus).

A new study, known as EQUIPTT (Evaluation of QUiPP app for Triage and Transfer), has been launched at 13 obstetric centres across the UK – seven will use the app and six will not.

The study aims to recruit 580 women over the next 12 months to look at whether the QUiPP app can reduce the number of women with symptoms of threatened preterm labour being unnecessarily

Jo Deery, 36, had seven miscarriages before being referred to St Thomas’ Hospital in 2015.

When the mother of three fell pregnant again she had transabdominal cerclage – a stitch that closes the cervix during pregnancy to help prevent miscarriage or premature birth.

Jo, a research nurse, said: “During an antenatal appointment

it was thought that the stitch wasn’t working as best as it could. As soon as I heard that I felt instant panic and dread and was sick to my stomach that I was going to lose my baby again.

“The doctors used the QUiPP app on me and it turned out that my chance of going into preterm labour again was very very small. I was able to go home and it gave me a brilliant peace of mind. I actually carried my baby son,

Cooper, to full term.”

Chief investigator Professor Andrew Shennan OBE, consultant obstetrician at Guy's and St Thomas' and Professor of Obstetrics at King's College London, said: “The more accurately we can predict a woman’s risk of preterm birth, the better we can manage a woman's pregnancy to ensure the safest possible birth for her and her baby.”

Out-of-hours cancer helpline GUY’S AND St Thomas’ and Macmillan Cancer Support have launched a new helpline for cancer patients across South East London.

The Acute Oncology Service (AOS) helpline provides advice and support to patients and carers worried about their symptoms and condition. It means they can contact

a senior nurse at night and on weekends for guidance and reassurance.

The service has been developed with patients who highlighted the difficulties they faced getting clinical advice out of hours. The AOS helpline launched on Monday 7 May and will be evaluated to see how it can be improved for patients.

ONGRATULATIONS TO the newly re-elected Labour administration and LibDem Opposition and commiserations to the Green & Tory Parties, who will have no councillors representing the thousands of their voters due to the unfair electoral system we are blighted with.

Below are the promises made to the campaign group Stop Killing Cyclists by the new administration.

IF implemented (we have had many cycling false dawns over the years), it would be a major step to tackling the triple crises facing the borough: airpollution, obesity epidemic & the climate emergency.

1. Liveable neighbourhoods – Southwark Labour will bid for funding for Peckham Rye Lane, a new linked Quietway route & where else we can.

The Mini-Holland scheme in Waltham Forest cost £30 million & we will bid for a similar large amount.

2. We will commit to spending equivalent of £20 per head for total investment in our cycling infrastructure.

3. Reference is made in the OKR masterplan to a fully protected new cycle lane which we support & we support CS4.

4. We will continue to invest in all physical measures to reduce speeding cars especially on 20 mph streets.

Speed cameras are outside of Council’s direct control but we will press TfL to use average speed cameras as much as possible.

5. The Council will expand & enhance its scheme to encourage staff to cycle on council business for greater take-up.

6. We commit to a traffic-free Rye Lane as an objective & will continue dialogue with TfL about its Quietway status.

7. We commit to designing each junction according to best practice & design standards & London Cycle Design Standards which cater for protected left-hand turns & T-junction bypasses, as done with QW7.

8. HGVs: we commit to insisting on agreements signed with developers that include Construction Management Plans & ensure that they are CLOCS and FORS registered. We also commit to reviewing the Council’s Fleet operations. Registration & implementation of CLOC scheme for relevant council vehicles will be included in this review.”

Cllr Eckersley: Defender of people’s rights

THE SUDDEN death of Toby Eckersley deprives our borough of a well known, experienced defender of people's rights, needed now as much as ever, ‘Tributes paid to Charming Gent Toby’, Southwark News, May 3, 2018.

I am very sad personally as we have been fellow local campaigners for over forty years.

We met first in the mid 1970s when he supported the Peckham Action Group (PAG) campaign to stop the destruction of the north side of the historic Peckham High Street for the Council's plan to replace it with a massive new town hall and four lane road. That was also when he was elected to the Council for the first time.

Just two weeks ago he demonstrated at the community organised hustings on planning and regeneration the depth of his understanding of the planning system and the negative effects it can have on people's lives.

When we met at that event, we talked about the PAG campaign. We agreed that all the time since then we had shared a strong motivation in our community work to defend people's rights against State power.

Toby's commitment to helping people defend their rights was displayed over the decades, and most recently in the Aylesbury Estate CPOs. His contribution in the community has been invaluable and will be sorely missed.

11% of vote but no seat

WHEN LARGE numbers of people can vote for a party, and yet receive no representation on the council, something is drastically wrong.

The Green Party received more than 20,000 votes - 11% of the vote share.

Under a proportional voting system, this would equate to six council seats. Our six councillors would be speaking up for council housing and genuinely affordable housing, holding the council to account on air pollution and fighting

to reverse the youth service cuts implemented by the returning administration.

We will of course continue to do this from outside the chamber. But voices will continue to be unheard and ignored until England is allowed to follow the other home nations’ lead and implement proportional representation at the local level.

We call on members of the Labour and Conservative party to join the campaign for reform to the voting system.

Dogs ruining estate

IN REFERENCE to ‘Fenced Out: Residents miffed as council puts up 10ft fence to stop dogs messing on grass’, Southwark News, 26 April, 2018.

My cousin lives on this estate in Borough with her young children and says the dog fouling on these two areas is horrendous, at times there are three or four dogs on there all doing their mess.

She dosn’t live on the ground floor, however, the smell and flies these piles of dog mess causes is that bad she is even unable to open her windows, or sit out, she is actually higher up, the flies are swarming around. It must be terrible living further down.

Her children can’t play out on the grass either as they would get covered, it is actually a health hazard, the dogs are often off the leads they bark aggresifly and run up to her kids and this scares them, the owners just let them do it.

Lots of her neighbours have complained about this longstanding problem, they too feel like they are inprisoned not being allowed onto their grassed areas, it is totally out of bounds to them due to this problem.

Southwark Council did clearly listen to the many residents who have complained about this fouling and tried to stop this filthy behaviour first by other means, as we see in the photo they put up “no dogs allowed” signs that are totally ignored, they sent out letters, this too was ignored and then put up the railings as a final attempt. The relation with the council and residents is far from irretrivably broken, they are trying

to help to allow all the residents to reclaim and enjoy their grassed areas.

When I have visited my cousin I notice these dogs run freely from one area to the other getting through the railing gaps. These people should be considerate it is not up to others to clean up their dogs mess, it is their responsibility, they wouldn’t like this faeces outside their own home!

It is the owners not the dogs that are to blame.

£17,000 is no small sum IN REFERENCE to your article ‘Over £17,000 to be paid out in golden goodbye to councillors’, Southwark News, April 19, 2018.

Seventeen thousand pounds may seem like a small sum of money to Peter John but to those having to use foodbanks it is a fortune beyond their comprehension. It could fund the food bill for 17 families for a year.

Definitely 'small sum' to a rich council leader and his cohorts, but not to the electorate and council tax payers who fund these exorbitant payments.

What makes these payments so obscene is the fact that the three councillors involved have not lost their posts, have not been made redundant, have not fought the election and lost, no, they have decided that the grass is greener elsewhere and have resigned voluntarily, but nonetheless they would 'cop it and hop it' at our expense.

They have all been involved in one way or another with the disastrous regeneration policy and its implementation.

The Heygate development would have been enough for them to be sacked without any compensation whatsoever if they had worked in private industry. They have overseen, along with Peter John, a relaxing of the 35% of affordable housing requirements from property developers.

They should hang their heads in shame. They are proving by the acceptance of the golden umbrella payments in their minds they come before the electorate and council tax payers who put them there in the first place.

The first of this generation arrived to help rebuild the UK after the Second World War on 22nd June 1948, when the Empire Windrush landed at Tilbury.

Many of the Windrush passengers came to Coldharbour Lane in my constituency to look for work, often going on to play crucial roles in London Transport and the newlyfounded NHS. Some went on to make a significant contribution to our local politics, including Sam King who had served in the RAF during the Second World War and was elected the first black Mayor of Southwark.

The new arrivals brought their art, food and music with them – now all cherished as part of the rich cultural tapestry found in my constituency and across London and the country today.

The Windrush Generation, and their children and grandchildren, have made a huge contribution to our local community, and I am deeply appalled by this government’s treatment of them.

It is disgraceful that the Home Office is deporting residents who arrived in the UK as children, who have lived and worked in the UK their entire lives, who have contributed so much to our society and for whom the UK is home.

Their plight is a direct result of policy created by the government under Theresa May. On numerous occasions I have worked to support older constituents who face the threat of detention and deportation, or have been refused access to NHS treatment.

I have represented their concerns to the Home Office and Tory Ministers on many occasions.

In Parliament I recently urged the government to commit to reform the immigration system, and I hope that the new Home Secretary Sajid Javid will respond to this call.

In the year of the 70th Anniversary of the Windrush’s arrival we should be celebrating this remarkable generation, not punishing them.

I will do everything possible to keep challenging the appalling way that this government is treating members of the Windrush Generation and, more widely, the policies of the Tories which are proving so hostile to our amazing, diverse communities.

The Outpost of Bermondsey O

utpost is the next Bermondsey Artists’ Group exhibition (BAG), and it promises intrigue and excitement via interaction and performance at various times throughout the exhibition, that hopes to instigate discussion.

DULWICH PICTURE Gallery will present a major retrospective of work by the celebrated British artist and designer, Edward Bawden RA CBE (1903-89).

It will be the most wide-ranging exhibition since Bawden’s death, and the first to look at every aspect of his 60-year career, showcasing a number of previously unseen works from the Bawden family’s private collection as well as 18 rarely seen war portraits, displayed together for the first time.

Widely respected as an innovative graphic designer, book illustrator and printmaker, Edward Bawden is best known today for his monumental linocuts and for the witty designs he made for companies like Shell and Fortnum & Mason. Meanwhile his achievements as a fine artist have been largely forgotten. Along with Paul Nash and Eric Ravilious, Bawden reinvented watercolour for the 20th century, and a central aim of this exhibition is to bring this work back into public view.

Bawden was a creator of imaginary worlds, inspired by stories, travels abroad and by the everyday world.

Featuring 170 works, half of them from private collections, the exhibition will

be arranged thematically to follow the evolution in his style and the constant creative dialogue between media and disciplines, with rooms dedicated to leisure, architecture, animals and fantasy, as well as the previously unexplored theme of gardens.

The exhibition culminates with an exploration of Bawden’s lifelong love of storytelling. One wall will be covered in original drawings, almost all from private collections, that span every decade from the 1920s to the 1980s. Another will feature studies for some of Bawden’s best-loved murals, while the last works are among his most colourful and inventive, including several linocuts from his much-loved series, Aesop’s Fables. Highlights include designs for Fortnum & Mason and Twinings, alongside fanciful illustrated books created by Bawden for his children.

Sixty years of Bawden

Spanning photography, painting, sculpture, drawing, film and performance, Outpost brings together 29 artists from the group.

Outpost is an open call to showcase the diverse range of practices that exist amongst local artists. Different discourses are revealed and some unexpected shared concerns emerge against the backdrop of the social space at Shortwave Cafe.

Outpost can be seen as a snapshot of what is going on in the BAG artists’ studios at the moment. It is

informal and not staged around a thematic exhibition. Instead it reveals a community of artists willing to share their creative outputs with their peers and the public alike and the start of a dialogue across boundaries, be those creative, social, political, or other.

Outpost is an invitation for the local community to come together socially at Shortwave. Public engagement and social gatherings and events are seen as an integral part of this BAG show. There will be performance and interactive events on the opening evening and during the exhibition.

Established in 1983 Bermondsey Artists’ Group BAG is an artist-led initiative that supports CGP London and creates opportunities for artists who live, work or study in Southwark. This peer-led

IT WAS a great in its graphics, a marvel in its music, scintillating in its song but overall this production of Chess was, well, like watching a game of chess, with just occasional flurries of action that hovered in the vicinity of excitement, but never really crossed over into that promised land, writes Michael Holland.

Taking each part separately it is fine: nothing wrong with the acting, the singing, the orchestra, the chorus, but when placed together with the book and direction it didn’t always make sense. Thankfully there were copious notes in the programme that I read at the interval to find out what was going on, otherwise I would

have been totally lost.

Basically, Chess is about the Bobby Fischer - Boris Spassky chess matches that were played out at the height of the Cold War, with the two Grand Masters put out there as symbols of East and West, and Good and Evil. Chess portrays those battles very well with giant video screens showing flags flying and rockets taking off in the space race, and all juxtaposed with scaremongering headlines, but those giant screens then made the actors look quite small in comparison, and on that huge stage - in the battle for the limelight - the graphics won every time.

Yes, there were some memorable

highlights: the wonderful One Night in Bangkok was a raucous trip through that city’s red light district with baseball-capped sex tourists running round like pooches with two penises, scantily clad women advertising their personal attributes, and even a lady boy suffering the indignity of being felt up and fobbed off when the sex seekers got a handful of surprise, rather than prize.

Plus the beautiful, stand out song of the show, I Know Him So Well, which got a sitting ovation that almost erupted into standing before people got a grip and calmed down.

Elaine Paige, who first sung this in the original production, was in the audience watching Alexandra Burke and Cassidy Janson belt it out this time, which was nice, as was the appearance of the writers, Tim Rice and Benny and Björn from Abba, for the final bows.

Michael Ball gives another solid singing performance, though I’m not sure having two women fighting over him through song is as believable as we are asked to believe. For me, though, it was Tim Howar as Freddie Trumper who made Chess watchable, if not the resounding triumph the backers want it to be. He brought the stage to life whenever he was on and never let the overwhelming technology detract from his presence.

California dreamin’ WEST

In Peckham Levels we now have two West Coast women who came over here some years ago and decided to stay and provide a bit of the Golden State for us in SE London.

Jenn and Aneley ran a pop-up in Borough Market until branching out to open West: Natural Wine Bar & Conscious Kitchen, where they deliver the dishes that they remember from home. Myself and Nina discovered just what delicious dishes they are by allowing Jenn to choose for us. Although, what Jenn

did was pretty much give us a taste of everything on the menu!

After some rather wonderful olives marinated in citrus and rosemary the plates began to flow from the kitchen - each one dressed and presented beautifully. Plus, our host with the most provided different wines to accompany each phase of the feast; every bottle would come with an indepth back story of its creator and the grape used in its creation, which all went towards making the wine all the more enjoyable.

The Jalapeño and Edamame Hummus with Grilled Sourdough (or toast as we used to call it in SE London…) was particularly nice, then Nina commandeered the Pickled Kimchi Radishes and made that bowl of pickles her own. ‘I love kimchi,’ she said as way of explanation between the crunching and munching of those radishes.

Next up was Heirloom Carrots with a Chilli Feta Dip, and Long Stem Broccoli with Chick Pea Salsa, Coconut Yoghurt and a Garden Herb Pesto which had a crunchiness to it that added something intriguingly different. Jenn did explain what it was but the sounds of the soul

classics emanating from the bar next door meant my attention was diverted by James Brown telling me to 'Get up offa that thing’, so I missed what she said. Nevertheless, these were great dishes and justified our decision to let our dinner be chosen for us, because I don’t think we would have chosen these two ourselves, and thereby missing out on something special.

The natural wines are sourced from many countries. We had glasses from Germany, South Africa, Italy and England, and all were extremely moreish, though I did become rather enamoured with a Swartland red, called Follow Your Dreams. I could have followed that bottle anywhere!

The West staff were all knowledgeable about the wines and food. You could see them discussing the menu with diners, and handing out sample tastes of the wines so customers could decide which to have.

After a brief hiatus Jenn started us on the Taco menu. There was a very good sea bass and slaw ensemble; a chorizo and apple offering that made you sit up, and the Slow Cooked Pork Belly, Salsa Verde and Crispy

Shallot, which really did tick all the boxes.

By now we were unable to finish off any of the plates that kept arriving, but we knew there was one more that had to be done - Dessert.

There is only one dessert on the menu but we asked for a little time before we made an attempt at it.

When we were eventually ready we gave that Beetroot and Red Wine Buckwheat Crumble, Thyme and Vanilla Ice Cream a jolly good go. It was comprised of two types of beet and I thought the golden beetroot went best with the ice cream. Then again, I think ice cream can be eaten with just about anything edible.

Peckham Levels was once a dreary, multi-level, concrete car park but now it is many separate spaces providing all manner of diversions, with varying views over London.

There is a buzz about the place, an atmosphere of excitement, and West Wine fits nicely into the ambience of it all. Their food is adventurous and full of intriguing combinations and flavours, plus, their passion for good, healthy food is contagious. We left there feeling happy, sated, and very pleased with life in general.

Opening in autumn 2018 in a fantastic location opposite The Shard, Science Gallery will attract 300,000 visitors per year, bringing together artists, scientists and visitors in surprising and innovative ways.

We are recruiting for three confident individuals with a positive can do-attitude to support the front of house and retail operations. The positions involve providing frontline information and assistance to visitors, selling retail product, assisting with stock control, assisting with event preparation and delivery and assisting with maker workshops.

As a customer facing role the ability to engage with and respond positively to customers and visitors is essential, as well as the ability to work with a wide range of people and as part of a varied and diverse team.

DAVID HAYE hasn’t revealed if he intends to retire or continue boxing after his second loss in fourteen months to Tony Bellew last weekend.

Haye, 37, was dumped on the canvas twice in the third round before the referee stepped in and stopped the bout after the Bermondsey fighter was dropped again in the fifth.

The former two-weight world champion said he would “review the tapes” before making a proper assessment and spoke of “keeping the momentum going”.

But he has been urged to quit. Bellew told him in the ring afterwards it was time to hang up his gloves, and George Groves, who signed with Haye’s Hayemaker Promotions in 2009, added his voice to that sentiment this week.

Groves said: "David was kind and generous to me when I turned pro. I learnt a lot from him in the early part of my career.

"I won't forget that. I hope he finds his new calling, I hope he's happy, I hope he never decides to fight again."

Haye posted a classy message on Instagram after the fourth defeat of his 32-fight professional career.

He wrote: “We promised the rematch would be another epic battle, and despite not getting the outcome I so desired, it certainly lived up to the hype.

“Thank you to everyone who packed out The O2 Arena, tuned into Sky Box Office or piled into their local pub to witness it live.

The youngsters started slowly against a strong Dulwich side and found themselves 1-0 down early on.

Docklands carried on pressing and thanks to a strong performance all round came out 5-1 winners with goals from Ethan Maxwell, Tyler Andrews, Frankie

Southwark trio make mark at British Champs

SOUTHWARK GYMNASTICS Club is celebrating one of the biggest achievements in their history after three of their gymnasts earned their team second place at the recent Team Gym British Championships.

Myles Thomas-Ellis, Carlton FontaineNowell and Luke Sinclair, all aged 16, grabbed second on the podium after receiving gold in the qualifying rounds.

Along with their training, they have all recently passed their British Gymnastics Level 0 coaching courses and two of them, Fontaine-Nowell and Sinclair, have gone a step further by taking their Level 1 coaching courses. After both passed their exams they are now fully qualified British Gymnastics coaches.

The club currently have funded coaching courses for eight of their senior gymnasts aged 14-17 who are now qualified as Level 0 coaches, meaning they can assist the head coaches.

Freddie Haggerty, 13, fought in Thailand when he was nine and aims to become as expert at the sport as Jonathan, 21.

Jonathan became world champ in April 2016 when he defeated Gery Bevetto from Italy, and he has now set his sights on mixed martial arts and the UFC, which has risen to prominence on the back of Irish fighter Conor McGregor’s exploits.

He is trained by his dad, Jonathan senior, and his mum Lisa has no worries about the path her son has chosen.

“That’s his dream and I’m behind him all the way,” Lisa told the News.

“I don’t worry about him at all, he’s very good and he’s never taken any bad knocks, he has never really been hit that hard. They train harder than the boxers.

“He has won his last twelve fights, all knockouts, and the last guy he fought was in his late 30s.”

It is hoped Thai boxing will eventually be an Olympic sport.

Jonathan is also a trainer and receives sponsorship which allows him to devote time to training camps.

Freddie, meanwhile, had some schooling in the art in Thailand, where the rules are very different to the ones in England.

“Freddie used to be an actor in the West End, he appeared in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” Lisa explained.

“He has just come back from three weeks in Thailand where it’s full contact. Here there are no head shots but there it’s no shinpads, you can use elbows, knees. He trains three times a week and it going to Birmingham soon for a competition.”

Jonathan, meanwhile, is next in action on May 26.

Gavin Rose’s side hold their nerve to win promotion from the Isthmian League for the first time since 1907

AFTER A 111-year journey, twelve yards stood between Dulwich Hamlet and glory.

It would be decided in a split-second, but if Dipo Akinyemi was feeling the weight of history he didn’t show it.

The number 17 strolled forward from the centre circle looking like the coolest person at Tooting & Mitcham’s Imperial Fields on a swelteringly hot afternoon.

Akinyemi placed the ball, took a few paces back and a deep breath, then had the composure to wait for Hendon goalkeeper Tom Lovelock to move before finding the bottom corner.

Cue bedlam as Hamlet fans stormed the pitch.

It was almost 30 degrees as supporters mobbed the players, but some of the seeds for this win were sown in a blizzard in March.

After the locks went on the gates at their Champion Hill home, Gavin Rose’s side played their first league game at Imperial Fields on Sunday, March 18, having been forced to look for an alternative stage for their promotion bid.

Their rivals Tooting & Mitcham obliged, and Hamlet defeated Worthing 3-0 in front of almost 1,000 freezing fans.

The day before, those fans had organised a walk from Goose Green roundabout to Champion Hill to rally support in the wake of Meadow, who own Champion Hill, evicting them, another element of a dispute with Southwark Council with the club stuck in the middle.

Hamlet led the Isthmian League Premier Division for most of the season, but Billericay, with a wage bill that dwarfed the Dulwich club’s, won enough of their games in hand to pip them to the title.

That meant a fourth successive playoff campaign, and they just edged Leiston 1-0 in the semi-final last Thursday night.

They could have been carrying some psychological baggage after losing in the final 2-1 to Bognor Regis Town in 2017 and to East Thurrock 3-1 the year before.

Tickets quickly sold out for their latest attempt, 3,321 flocking eight miles south of Champion Hill. That broke the record at this ground, set when Tooting & Mitcham played the recently formed AFC Wimbledon in

an Isthmian League First Division clash in 2005.

In recent years Hamlet have grown their fanbase through creative means – not least on social media, especially Twitter where they have gained 5,000 new followers in the last three months – and they have promoted causes such as International Women’s Day by wearing an all-purple kit.

This was also a reminder of the joys of non-league football. It’s traditional at this level that fans behind both goals swap ends at half-time, hoping to “suck” the ball into their net. That was no small feat given the size of the crowd last Sunday. There was also a thirst-quenching detour across the road to the BP station, where the queue for refreshments was out the door and past the petrol pumps.

At that point Hamlet were behind to Ashley Nathaniel-George’s 36thminute strike, which trickled through the grasp of goalkeeper Amadou Tangara.

Tangara was taunted with chants of “dodgy keeper” from Hendon fans for most of the rest of the game. But he saved brilliantly from Niko Muir to prevent his side falling further behind.

Rose reminded his players at the break that they had been the better side, but when they couldn’t force the ball in after several goalmouth scrambles it appeared, yet again, it wasn’t going to be their day.

In the 54th minute, in front of their fans, Hamlet finally levelled when Gavin Tomlin prodded in after Hendon twice cleared off the line.

Hamlet’s Nyren Clunis smashed a shot off the crossbar soon after but that was the closest either side came as the pace understandably dropped and in the stands sunscreen was being more vigorously rubbed into sunburnt skin.

Rose said they had some “luck” in that the coin toss decided the shootout would be in the stand housing the “home” fans, who had shown remarkable stamina chanting to their drumbeat for the entire second half and through extra-time.

To penalties, and Hendon’s Sam Murphy beat Tangara before Ashley Carew levelled.

Tangara sprung down low to keep out Oliver Sprague’s effort and Nathan Green put his side 2-1 up.

Tangara then incredibly saved again to deny Michael Corcoran and now it was Hamlet fans ironically chanting “dodgy keeper”.

Nathan Ferguson couldn’t extend their lead, Daniel Uchechi and Muir scored for Hendon, while in between Anthony Acheampong held his nerve to preserve the slim advantage.

It all fell to substitute Akinyemi, who calmly rolled in to spark such joyous scenes.

“It’s a great feeling.

We’ve gone so close in recent years, we’ve had some great servants along the way. This victory is for them as well,” Rose, wiping pouring sweat from his face and straining to make himself heard outside a jubilant

dressing room, told the News afterwards.

“I always felt that even when we lost the goal we had something in us to get back in it. Maybe luck was on our side.

“In the end it goes to penalties and you know that anyone can win. Luck was on our side when maybe in previous years it hadn’t been. That’s football for you.

“I told the players at half-time to remember we were the team on top and if we could keep doing what we were doing we would get back in the

“It’s important not to panic, believe in each other and that’s what they did.

“We’ve got players who’ve been on a long journey with us over a long period of time, they know what it takes. They’ve also felt how bad it feels to lose. They’ve shown now how much it means to them to win.

“It definitely came up [about the previous defeats] but we wanted to focus more on what we had to do and that’s what we did.”

Rose will now spend the summer planning for National League South,

but whether that campaign is at Champion Hill remains to be seen.

“I haven’t got a clue,” Rose said.

“What I do know is we have to think about players for the league above. A lot of them can play for us in the league above, but it depends on what position the club are in financially.

“It won’t do us any harm playing in that league with the squad we have at the moment. We’ll see how it goes.”

At Goose Green on Sunday, thoughts of the future were forgotten as celebrations continued long into the night.

illwall's first team captain Steve Morison took some time out before training last week to visit Peter Hills Primary School in Rotherhithe along with The Lions' club mascot Zampa The Lion.

Peter Hills Primary School have signed up to 'The Daily Mile', which aims to improve the physical, social, emotional, mental health and wellbeing of children – regardless of age, ability or personal circumstances.

It is a profoundly simple but effective concept, which any primary or nursery school can implement. Its impact can be transformational – improving not only the children's fitness, but also their concentration levels, mood, behavior and general wellbeing.

The Daily Mile is a social activity, wherein the children run or jog – at their own pace – in the fresh air with friends. Children can occasionally walk to catch their breath, if necessary, but should aim to run or jog for the full 15 minutes.

Research has shown that the Daily Mile can even increase attainment in primary school, and parents have reported an increased interest in health and wellbeing from their children after they have started 'The Daily Mile'.

"We introduced The Daily Mile to our School over a year ago to increase levels of physical activity and it's been amazing," said Malachi Talabi, head of physical education at Peter Hills School.

"We have found it's a great way to get the children active first thing in the morning and it also helps them to improve healthy habits. Our children are achieving great things in P.E. and are more active and attentive during the school day.

After the Daily Mile the children are more attentive and energetic during the school day and the best thing about it is they are improving their fitness levels while having fun.

"We are so grateful that Millwall have helped us build The Daily Mile as we find the facility at St Paul's Sports Ground ideal. It's hard to track down a good space for The Daily Mile and now we have the support of Millwall, especially when Steve Morison and Zampa turned up to encourage the children."

Nine-year-old Ruby Rae Edwards said of the morning: "I loved it because I met the captain of Millwall, Steve Morison. I also liked it because I got lots of exercise and I am becoming fitter. Athletics and running is my favourite sport. I enjoyed it very much and I saw Zampa. To show how much I love Millwall, I have seen lots of their matches."

IS THERE nothing Neil Harris can’t do?

A couple of days before the final game of the season, Millwall released a video featuring Harris urging fans to stay off the pitch at the final whistle.

After the Lions deservedly defeated Aston Villa 1-0 the wonder was if his words would have the desired effect.

It didn’t bode well when the cavalry including the various security personnel started positioning themselves around the perimeter of the pitch, and especially densely in front of the away stand.

Millwall fans do like a challenge, after all.

And when referee Tim Robinson brought the curtain down on a superb season, those defences were initially breached by a number of exuberant supporters. Almost immediately, however, they were met with boos by the rest of the ground, and within a couple of minutes the pitch was fully cleared.

It may not have been all Harris, because the majority of the Millwall fans genuinely wanted the chance to salute their players’ achievements this season.

Steve Morison and his son Fenton led out the squad and staff, with their kids in tow, before Harris and Millwall chairman John Berylson saluted the fans.

There had been a celebratory feel to the afternoon from the start, and that was the

perfect way to bring the season to a close.

It would have spoilt it somewhat had there been unsavoury scenes, and it seems to be tradition now that home fans enter the pitch on the last day and inevitably it leads to some goading of the away end. Millwall fans had experienced that a week previously at Middlesbrough.

This was perhaps one of the most impressive performances of the season when you consider the context that Millwall had little to play for. It said a lot about Harris and the character and spirit of the side that they played with such aggression and conviction. Morison ran around and instructed and complained like it was the first game of the season or like he was playing for a new deal. The referee and linesman got it as well at one point, Morison sarcastically raising his arms in mock celebration when Lee Gregory was given a free-kick.

What Harris has built and the kind of ethos he has restored could also be summed up in the performance of Ben Marshall. It was the Wolves man’s last game before the end of his loan. He had nothing really to gain and a lot to lose, if, for instance, he picked up an injury, given his future has yet to be resolved and he will move on from the Midlands club in the summer. In the absence of the injured right-backs Mahlon Romeo and Conor McLaughlin, Marshall filled in in defence and was outstanding. He finally hit the turf in the 70th minute, blood coming through the wrapping he was

wearing over the wound and stitches from the Middlesbrough game. Marshall was given a rapturous ovation when he eventually went off.

Ryan Tunnicliffe, too, started just his second game since February and typically covered so much ground, including darting into the area to win a penalty when Mile Jedinak tugged his shirt. Shaun Williams and Jed Wallace – who live a couple of doors from each other in Biggin Hill – were less than neighbourly when they squabbled over who would take the spot-kick. Morison stepped in to remind them Williams was the designated taker in Gregory’s absence, and the midfielder confidently dispatched the kick to Mark Bunn’s right.

Wallace was first to congratulate him, the pair all smiles again.

The gulf in squad depth between the clubs was underlined when Steve Bruce introduced Lewis Grabban, Jack Grealish and Robert Snodgrass, but it had little effect.

Millwall pushed for a second, and got another chance from the spot after Villa had handballed. But this time Bunn saved Gregory’s effort, before also keeping out Williams’ follow-up.

But that couldn’t diminish the performance and Millwall will go into a longer summer than usual after two playoff campaigns in the last two years with a spring in their step that should carry into pre-season.

Tunnicliffe thundered into a tackle, and the stadium rose and roared as if a goal had been scored. Tunnicliffe jogged back to midfield and shared a smile with Wallace.

It was a scene befitting the season.

THE 2017-18 season started as many expected: two draws and two defeats from the opening four games back in the Championship but with some really encouraging performances.

The Lions got their first win in emphatic fashion when they defeated Norwich City 4-0 on a gloriously sunny Den afternoon and from then it was obvious they would fear no one in the division.

That win was the first of many memorable victories as Millwall initially established themselves in the division based on their good home form before their they really kicked after the turn of the year.

That stubborn first away win just wouldn’t come but when it eventually did on January 20 no one could have anticipated the run it would inspire.

Six wins in eight games on the road propelled Millwall up the table into sixth, making the impossible seem possible.

Here, the News takes a look back over an expectation-defying season.

August

Five of Millwall’s summer signings started as the visitors absolutely steamrolled through Nottingham Forest time and time again on the opening day and their dominance was reflected in every facet except on the scoreline, as they somehow lost 1-0 despite 23 shots on goal and a seemingly legitimate Steve Morison strike ruled out.

George Saville fired them in front in their first league game at The Den against Bolton only for Felipe Morais to equalise, a Phil Parkinson side yet again proving a stubborn opponent.

Byron Webster, furious after being left out of the starting line-up at Forest for Jake Cooper, had got his place back following Cooper’s ankle injury in a 2-0 League Cup win over Stevenage.

On August 15 new striker Tom Elliott looked like he had rescued a point with his first league goal for the club, only for Jordan Spence to strike two minutes from time as Mick McCarthy plundered the points at his former ground, Ipswich winning 4-3.

There were more encouraging signs but more frustration too, as Millwall went to Bristol City and created all the best chances but drew 0-0.

A weakened Lions side went out of the League Cup, losing 2-0 at Reading.

But then the division’s bigger sides saw what they would have to face at The Den when one of the promotion favourites, Norwich City, were simply blown away, Lee Gregory, Saville, Jed Wallace and Shaun Hutchinson scoring in a 4-0 win.

Position: 17th; five points from five games.

September

By far Millwall’s toughest assignment so far, Wolves away, was made even tougher when Aiden O’Brien was sent off in the 65th minute with his side 1-0 down to Diogo Jota’s tenth-minute goal.

Millwall admirably scrapped until the last minute, but this showed the yawning gap in quality between the second and third tiers.

Holloway know what they thought of him at Loftus Road, the home side coming from two down to draw 2-2 after another red card, this time for Gregory. “Don’t forget, I kept you up, yeah,” Holloway later spat. “And don’t forget I tried my best and if that isn’t good enough for you, I don’t really care. Is that fair enough?”

A hostile, raucous afternoon at The Den followed four days later when leagueleaders and unbeaten Leeds were sent back up north with their tails between their legs after O’Brien had struck in a 1-0 win.

There were 16,477 at The Den, and it was an occasion that showed what Harris was talking about when he spoke two-and-ahalf years earlier about “restoring the connection between the fans and the players”.

A 0-0 draw at Preston showed again that Millwall would be no pushovers, and that their defence would be the cornerstone of their hopes of Championship survival.

Saville scored twice in the last ten minutes in a 2-1 home win over Reading, but the month ended sourly, Webster’s season cut short by a cruciate ligament injury in a 3-1 defeat by those nemeses Barnsley.

Position: 13th; 13 points from 11 games.

October

A theme of the season was the number of poor refereeing decisions that cost Millwall who knows how many points.

At Brentford on October 14 they were trailing when Wallace was upended in the box before Gregory swept home the loose ball. But Lee Probert had whistled immediately rather than playing advantage, and that hasty decision cost the Lions when Gregory’s penalty was saved

by Daniel Bentley.

Ryan Tunnicliffe got his first Millwall goal in a 2-0 win over Birmingham in south Bermondsey before more controversy when Harris was certain his side should have been awarded a penalty and Cardiff punished with a red card when Sean Morrison tugged back Gregory who was through on goal.

Bluebirds boss Neil Warnock was surprised by the away side’s aggressive approach after Hutchinson had sent Junior Hoilett over the advertising hoardings with a ferocious tackle. “See you at The Den,” Warnock warned.

Three days later the Owls spooked the Lions on Halloween night. Jordan Rhodes got the winner for Carlos Carvalhal’s Sheffield Wednesday after Elliott had cancelled out Adam Reach’s third-minute opener.

Position: 16th; 17 points from 15 games.

November

Millwall were expecting to get three points when they hosted Burton on November 4 but instead missed a host of chances before Wallace was red-carded and Marvin Sordell scored a 70th-minute winner with the visitors’ only shot on goal.

Two howlers from Robin Ruiters helped Millwall overturn a 1-0 deficit to lead 2-1 at Sunderland through two Saville freekicks. Jordan Archer then dropped a clanger of his own as he dropped Adam Matthews’ cross over the line but neither side could grab a winner as Sunderland became the first club in English football history to go 20 successive home games in all competitions without a win.

A 0-0 draw at home to struggling Hull suggested that it would be a scrap to stay out of the relegation places. Without the energy of Wallace and calmness and creativity of the injured Shaun Williams Millwall were finding it difficult to come up with creative answers to break down stubborn opponents at The Den. Harris’ side were still producing encouraging performances at some of the division’s big sides and should have taken something from Craven Cottage but were again undone by a dodgy refereeing decision, Rui Fonte falling easily under minimal contact from Conor McLaughlin and Oliver Norwood stroked home from the spot.

“We got punished by a harsh refereeing decision, the player has conned him into giving it,” Harris said afterwards ahead of a busy December, which really was beginning to look like a make-or-break month in the relegation battle.

Two days before Christmas, Millwall endured one of their toughest lessons of the season: give former England striker David Nugent an inch and he will take a mile, and it was a long journey back to London after a 3-0 defeat at Pride Park.

That seemed the worst possible preparation before a Boxing Day clash against Wolves, who were blitzing the division. It looked a mismatch on paper, yet how many times have this Millwall side surprised us? What they don’t have in talent like £16million Ruben Neves they make up for with heart and spirit.

They went ahead through Gregory only to find themselves 2-1 down in the last quarter. But Cooper scored an equaliser and that boosted confidence ahead of welcoming QPR and former boss Holloway back to south London.

It kept feeling as if the wheels were going to come off the top-six charge, but they then went and won 2-1 at Hull despite Harris resting Morison. Saville scored in the 51st second, before Cooper made it two and the Lions held on after Abel Hernandez’ late goal.

Incredibly, in the very next game, and against his former club, Saville scored in the 51st second again and Millwall had to dig in to defeat play-off rivals Brentford 1-0.

Harris was asked afterwards what he was most satisfied with and he replied: “Millwall going like a steam train really pleases me. Six points off the play-offs with nine games to go. The players, and fans, have earned the right to dream.”

The dream was boosted at Barnsley when Marshall scored one of the goals of the season to seal a 2-0 win in sub-zero conditions at Oakwell. Millwall were now twelve league games unbeaten.

There was no unlucky thirteen as Harris’ side swept aside Nottingham Forest, Williams claiming Millwall’s fastest goal of the season when he struck inside 27 seconds before Gregory added a second before half-time. The Lions were now just a point off sixth.

Harris said: “What we've achieved so far has been miraculous, but I want more I've told them that. It helps having no pressure on us, we roll on to the next one.”

The rumours first surfaced early in the month Down Under about a return for Tim Cahill and Millwall fans got their late Christmas present before the transfer window shut. Jason Shackell and Harry Toffolo also came in to bolster the defence but they must have felt like forgotten men.

The club’s media team put together a snazzy video, called The Return, featuring a montage of Cahill highlights from his previous spell, cut with the Lions icon in the dressing room putting on the number seven shirt and walking back out onto the pitch.

Every player spoke of Cahill’s impact.

Wallace and Williams would speak together on their way to training of their admiration for a 38-year-old who didn’t need to earn any more money from the game rolling his sleeves up – or down during the snow in March – and the squad took inspiration from it.

The club were inundated with media requests from around the world, and there were more cameras and journalists present for his first press conference than there had been before last year’s play-off

Cahill has been reintroduced to The Den crowd before the 0-0 draw with Derby on January 30.

Millwal required a last-minute Ben Thompson goal to draw 2-2 at home to Rochdale in the FA Cup fourth round. A rematch with Tottenham was the carrot, but on a freezing night and a dodgy pitch, the Lions went down 1-0 at Spotland.

Harris was criticised by some fans for fielding a weakened side in that replay, but his decision was backed up by some superb league performances.

Now Millwall couldn’t stop winning away, victories on the road coming at Reading, Birmingham and Burton, when

another new January signing, Ben Marshall, got his first goal for the club.

Millwall also defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-1 at home, after trailing at the break, Gregory and Morison giving them three points. “It is a platform to build on as we are chasing 50 points as quickly as possible,” Harris said.

They followed that by winning at Burton which moved them to within six points of sixth. “We have no fear of the division anymore. Four in a row away from home and anyone that has seen us all season, we could easily have double that on the road,” Harris said.

“That was probably our worst performance on the road this year, barring Norwich.

“I certainly felt that Burton should have took something out of the game. I have to give the credit to my players for finding another way of winning a game.”

Position: 12th; 48 points from 34 games.

On Easter Monday they had the chance to set a new club record of seven consecutive away wins, but were shocked by a quick Martyn Waghorn brace that gave the Tractor Boys a 2-1 lead.

Millwall recovered their composure to level through Saville, but then blew a slew of chances in the last five minutes.

That result put them level on points with Bristol City ahead of the sides’ meeting on April 7. Wallace curled home a magnificent opener before seven minutes after the break Morison made it 2-0 for a comfortable win.

There had been a tribute to former Lions assistant manager Ray Wilkins before kick-off. “I thought the two goals were outstanding,” Harris said. “It was a Millwall occasion that befitted Ray Wilkins, because the m i n u t e ’s applause and the noise the crowd made - he would have loved it. Next up was Bolton, and Millwall showed how far they had come by comfortably beating a team that had defeated them 2-0 twice the previous season in League One. Elliott nodded home his first goal since January, before Marshall scored a second after Romeo’s 70-yard run. They were now sixth for the first time this season.

Millwall showed their mettle by coming from behind to draw 1-1 with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane.

That made it seventeen league games unbeaten, but there were signs that they were tiring.

They should have gone ahead against Fulham before the Cottagers scored three second-half goals and then the top-six dream ended with a 2-0 loss against Middlesbrough.

Given there was little to play for, an impressive 17,195 turned up on the final day to contribute to one of the best atmospheres at The Den this season.

Millwall went ahead through Williams from the penalty spot after Tunnicliffe had been fouled.

Gregory had a chance to double the lead with four minutes left but missed his penalty.

Millwall had urged fans to stay off the pitch at the final whistle and when a fsupporters fans ignored that they were booed by the majority inside the stadium.

The pitch was quickly cleared and Morison led his team-mates on a lap of honour.

Harris was already managing expectations afterwards.

“Our aim come August 1 is to get 50 points next season. There has to be a sense of realism in terms of what we’ve achieved this year,” he said.

“We’ve improved in every transfer window that I’ve been here for and that's our challenge again this summer.

“I’ve got talented players and a great group of lads. We set some tremendous records this year but we’ve fallen slightly short.

“I wanted seventh spot but 72 points and eighth against the calibre of teams in this league is a fantastic achievement.”

‘KARMA’ STRIKES AS HAMLET GO UP AFTER 111 YEARS

DULWICH HAMLET boss Gavin Rose saw his side promoted from the Isthmian League for the first time in 111 years after a penalty shootout – and then revealed his side hadn’t spent a lot of time practising spotkicks.

Hamlet defeated Hendon 4-3 after extra-time last Sunday, Dipo Akinyemi’s winning penalty sparking a pitch invasion at Tooting & Mitcham’s Imperial Fields ground.

Goalkeeper Amadou Tangara saved two of Hendon’s penalties to put his side in control in the shootout after Hamlet

had come from behind in normal time when Gavin Tomlin cancelled out Ashley Nathaniel-George’s effort.

Nyren Clunis smacked a shot off the crossbar before Ashley Carew had a late chance to win it in extra-time but Hendon goalkeeper Tom Lovelock saved his freekick.

Carew, Nathan Green and Anthony Acheampong scored in the shootout before Akinyemi held his nerve in front of the Hamlet end, which was packed to capacity, to send Rose’s side into National League South.

Rose paid tribute to Tangara, who had been incessantly barracked by the Hendon fans for his mistake in allowing Nathaniel-George’s shot trickle in for the

opener.

He also explained the penalty strategy.

“We didn’t really practise penalties, we just went with the five most confident boys,” Rose told the News amid the celebrations afterwards. “That’s the best way to do it and it worked well for us.

“It’s karma, isn’t it? [Tangara] has made a mistake, which is fair enough, but he has shown he has mental strength and character. He stepped up and basically won it for us.”

The game broke the record capacity at the stadium, the majority of the 3,321 supporting Hamlet.

JED WALLACE would like Millwall to sign Ben Marshall on a permanent contract – but joked the Lions should have done a “three-for-two” deal with Wolves last summer.

Marshall became the third Wolves player to move to Millwall this season after Wallace and George Saville signed last year.

Like the latter two, Marshall, 27, was an immediate hit with Millwall fans, making his debut in a 1-1 draw with Cardiff in February before nailing down a regular place on the left wing.

His quality on the ball was a feature of his play, and he scored the winner at Burton before following that with a goal-of-the-season contender at Barnsley.

Former Stoke winger Marshall got another goal at Bolton and he also provided five assists to boost

Millwall’s play-off chase.

Marshall showed his versatility, and his toughness, by filling in at right-back on the final day of the season against Aston Villa last weekend despite having stitches in his knee. He finished with three goals in sixteen appearances.

Marshall’s parent club Wolves won the Championship title this season and are likely to splash millions to make their mark in the Premier League.

Marshall is likely heading for the exit door, but he is believed to be on around £20,000 per week at the Midlands club, a figure that would seem to be out of Millwall’s reach.

He has also been linked with relegated Stoke, whose manager Paul Lambert brought him to Wolves and said at the time he was a “terrific offensive player”.

Wallace knows Millwall are looking to strengthen this summer, and would like Marshall to be a permanent addition.

“We need to bring in two or three players that will help us push on,” Wallace said. “Maybe we should

have got three-for-two from Wolves last season!

“It’s been the best three years the club has had in probably the last three decades and we need to improve again for next season.

“Ben has been great on and off the pitch. He has added a lot of quality and he is very down to earth. That suits what we have here.

“I want other wingers at the club to give me competition and help me push on and be better. We recruited well in January and players had to up their performances.

“I’m sure that’s what the gaffer wants again next year.”
