Council to carry out “intrusive” fire safety checks on high rises

Southwark Council has said it will conduct “extra intrusive” fire safety checks in highrises across the borough, starting with Andoversford Court in Peckham.

Surveys will look at the outside of the building and communal areas, while the council will “enter homes with a camera” to capture details for their 3D models and “may need to open up walls and ceilings.”

The move comes in preparation for the government’s new Build Safety Bill and 2021 Fire Safety Act, which will make owners responsible for the fire safety of their building’s structure, external walls, and common parts.

In a statement, Southwark Council said the checks would “take around 30 to 45 minutes, and while it is intrusive for residents, all GDPR and privacy requirements will be followed.

“It may prove unnecessary to do [so] for other blocks or estates, but this testing phase will help in understanding its relevance,” they continued.

Only some residents will be asked by the council to allow access to their homes.

The council has said the inspections are

necessary “to test how the authority can respond, and look to find and iron out any practical issues with legislation change.”

“This makes headway to a smooth transition into new ways of working, and creates the least impact for residents when change happens.”

Southwark Council is one of the largest landlords in the country, with buildings spanning many decades. Each high-rise has unique and bespoke safety requirements.

The authority says it has a “good understanding” of the fire risks for all of

the 170 tower blocks in the borough. “It is therefore unlikely that survey findings will highlight urgent safety actions.” However, the council is committed to acting on significant findings,” a spokerperson added.

Southwark Council is starting with Andoversford Court in Peckham because it has eight floors and specific features, such as a maisonette layout, external surfaces and infill panels, which will help them understand other buildings.

for council homes and homelessness, said: “I want to thank the TMO and residents of Andoversford so much for their willingness to help us test the fire safety requirements we need to in advance of the new laws. Only with their help can we quickly carry out the inspections. I hope others in estates on the programme understand the importance of this work in keeping them safe.

“I know that it is inconvenient for people, and an expensive investment for the council, but people’s safety is our highest priority and we have to go as far as we can with this,” she added.

Residents will be contacted separately about any checks in homes within the block.

Fire safety has been an important public safety issue across the UK since the 2017 Grenfell Tower fire, which killed 72 people.

And in 2009, the Lakanal House fire in Camberwell killed six people, including three young children.

“Southwark Council has gone over and above what was required to make its buildings safe – including carrying out intrusive fire safety surveys on high rise buildings,” said the council.

“The Grenfell disaster in 2017 sadly proved that the UK still has far to go in making sure that buildings are safe and sound should a fire happen,” the spokesperson added.

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk Thames Clippers has announced it is launching the UK’s first-ever hybrid high-speed passenger boat in the capital this autumn.

The two new vessels will operate throughout the Central Zone, between Tower and Battersea Power Station piers, only venturing outside of central London to recharge their batteries.

Thames Clippers recently entered into negotiations with a local council in Gravesend to purchase the town pier, meaning London’s regular riverboat service could be extended to as far as Kent.

The boats, which are being built at Wight Shipyard on the Isle of Wight, will rely on battery power while transporting commuters and sightseers along the river Thames. But switch to biofuel power when outside of the central zone.

Tributes pour in as terminally ill toddler who united Millwall and West Ham passes away Eat well, stay healthy.

Isla Caton’s parents made the announcement on Tuesday, after she had courageously battled neuroblastoma.

The seven-year-old Hammers fan was well-loved for uniting West Ham and Millwall, who put aside their fierce rivalry to fundraise for the little girl’s treatment.

“It is with the heaviest of broken hearts that we must announce Isla gained her angel wings early hours of this morning, it was very peaceful and surrounded by the continued love of Nicola, Michael and Millie,” said Isla’s parents on Twitter.

“God bless our brave Isla.”

Both football clubs have celebrated Isla’s achievements and expressed their heartfelt condolences with the family.

“The hearts of everyone in the West Ham United family are broken this morning. Rest in peace brave, beautiful Isla, you were an inspiration to us all,” said West Ham FC. Fans of the club have applauded Isla for uniting them with arch rivals Millwall, saying “she brought so many people together and gave us all inspiration and hope.”

“I won’t ever forget her.”

Born into a West Ham-supporting family in Hornchurch, Essex, Isla’s fight against the illness caught the imagination of the Claret and Blue Army, who raised hundreds of thousands of pounds to

help fund her treatment, alongside with Millwall supporters.

Millwall FC seconded these comments.

“Everyone at Millwall sends their love to the Caton family at this incredibly sad time,” they announced in a Tweet.

“Rest in peace, Isla.”

And in response to flurry of requests from fans, Millwall FC have confirmed there will be a minute of applause during the seventh minute of their game against West Brom on Saturday.

Isla underwent chemotherapy, radiation therapy and major surgeries to remove a tumour from her stomach, bone marrow aspiration, MIBG therapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusions and a stem cell transplant, all through which she retained an amazing positivity that inspired those around her.

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk Community groups have said life-saving stab wound kits are not being installed fast enough, as knife crime continues to claim young lives in Southwark.

The installation of a bleed control community cabinet on Peckham High Street has still not happened, after campaigners launched an application in November.

Community cabinets are publicly accessible bleed control kits, which can be used to stem the flow of blood from catastrophic wounds until an ambulance arrives.

The location of each community cabinet is logged with the Ambulance Service and no training is required to use the device, as the emergency services will talk the user through every step of the way. The community kit contains simple, easy-to-use equipment which can be used to seal, stem and dress wounds anywhere on the body.

“We’ve raised the money and paid for it, said Lisa Pearson, an East Dulwich resident and spokesperson for Let The Youth Live, one of the organisations behind the project. “It is ready to be installed. You think it would be simple.

We are not asking for any money,” she added.

During this time, Lisa claims a number of stabbings have taken place in Peckham including one killing after a November knife fight. She says the more kits that are available, along with raising

awareness of them could save lives.

“Right now there is nothing in the community to keep people alive when they are catastrophically bleeding,” Lisa said. “What we are doing is empower the community to get involved and help save somebody’s life.”

Alongside having difficulty getting in touch with people and raising the money, which she said is “hard enough”, Lisa believed “a lot of back and forth” at Southwark Council was to blame.

She claims to have been bogged down by multiple levels of complex council bureaucracy, alongside not receiving enough support with the application process.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “The benefit of bleed control cabinets is clear. We are fully behind Ms Pearson’s plans to install a cabinet in Peckham and remain in contact with her about next steps.”

“They would be a very welcome tool at residents’ disposal,” she added.

For any community cabinet to be installed in the local area, it is necessary to obtain insurance and risk assessments - much of which is the applicant’s responsibility.

The first community cabinet was installed outside the Tesco Express on East Dulwich Road in November. “It took six months and a lot of effort,” said Lisa.

Let the Youth Live are looking to extend the scheme across London - which they say is “extremely behind” - by putting community cabinets in every borough.

They have plans to install additional kits in Camberwell, Brixton, Peckham and the Old Kent Road.

“Every street should have them,” said

Problems with installing community cabinets in Peckham has meant Lisa is now reluctant to work with the council on future projects and instead will be looking to the private sector.

“I thought going to the council would be easier. No-one has helped, there’s been no clarity and I have constantly had to chase things up.”

Community cabinets not only stem the flow of blood for stab or gunshot wounds. They can be used for road traffic or workplace accidents.

In London it takes an ambulance an average of seven minutes to reach a major emergency, while a person with a severe trauma can bleed to death in three minutes.

“These cabinets are vital in bridging this gap and ensuring people do not die on the street,” said Let the Youth Live in a statement.

Around 250 community cabinets have been put up in the UK, with only a handful of these in London.

The project was started by the Daniel Baird Foundation Charity, which was set up by Lynne Baird, whose son was fatally stabbed in 2017.

In the year ending 2020 there were around 46,000 offences involving knives or sharp instruments in England & Wales.

Lisa said that community cabinets were vital for keeping young people alive in the short term, while deeper solutions, like getting laws changed, were found. “Far too many of our young people are dying,” said Lisa.

“It cannot continue like this.”

A rape that police originally said took place near Peckham Rye railway station last week actually did not happen in the area, police have said, but no more information has been released.

Officers originally said that an eighteen-year-old woman was attacked by two men near the station at about 10.20pm on Thursday, January 13. But more than a week later, police have now said that the rape did not happen near the station - or in the Peckham area at all following testimony from the victim and their own enquiries.

They did not say where they now think the attack may have taken place.

Officers added that they were working with Southwark Council to establish all of the facts. A police spokesperson said: "Numerous and extensive enquiries have taken place and we continue to investigate the allegation in view of the new information provided.

"We continue to support the victim survivor in partnership with specialist services."

Asked again by the News for an update or a re-appeal a spokesperson said: “Enquiries are ongoing. We don’t have anything to add to our previous statement published last week.”

In light of the police statement issued last Friday January 21, a vigil planned in response to the original rape appeal, scheduled for later that day was cancelled.

Family of four to sue Southwark Council over overcrowding dispute

“But we feel like Southwark is our home. I have my friends here, my church.”

Last year, Cllr Cryan announced that “Deliberate Act” would be removed from council housing policy.

Yet community group Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth (HASL), which supports families with housing problems, claims “the council are still

wrongly using this ‘deliberate act’ term to refuse families living in extremely overcrowded conditions their rightful place on the housing register.”

“Southwark Council should never be treating its residents like this in the first place”, said HASL member Elizabeth Wyatt. “Why is Southwark Council’s approach to the housing crisis to blame vulnerable renters instead of taking on exploitative private landlords?

“This treatment of some of Southwark's most vulnerable residents is deeply harmful and absolutely unjustifiable,” they added.

In December 2020, another family successfully overturned a decision

by Southwark Council that severe overcrowding was a deliberate Act in the Court of Appeal.

There are currently more than 3.6 million people living in overcrowded homes, with high private rents, benefit cuts and a lack of family-sized council homes seen as the main reasons behind the crisis.

Families from ethnic minority backgrounds and immigrants are disproportionately affected by overcrowded housing.

30% of Bangladeshi households and 15% of Black African households are living in houses too small for their needs, while only 2% of White British households are overcrowded.

A 2021 Shelter report showed that Black Asian and disabled tenants were much more likely to face discrimination looking for a home, forcing many to rent dilapidated, unsuitable and hazardous housing.

But the problem is not unique to the borough of Southwark. Human Rights Watch interviewed 75 people living in temporary accommodation across London, including Camden, Croydon, Hackney and Lambeth.

In Wandsworth, Jada, 15, became seriously ill with pneumonia while living in a metal container apartment block which had cracks in her bedroom wall that let cold temperatures in during the winter.

Human Rights Watch have placed blame for this situation on the government.

“The situation is due to a combination of reduced funding for local authorities, austerity-motivated cuts to the welfare system, and a lack of affordable permanent housing,” they said in a statement.

Central government reduced its funding to local authorities by 37 per cent between 2009-10 and 2018-19, with London facing the largest cuts.

“Our budgets have been slashed year on year,” said Cllr Cryan. “It is unacceptable that children and families are suffering the human cost of cutbacks and I call on the government to increase the Local Housing Allowance.”

“We continue to increase the supply and refuse to ignore our moral obligation to provide high-quality homes residents deserve,” she added.

Another contributing factor is the lack of social and affordable housing in London.

“Successive governments have utterly failed to fix the housing crisis,” said Laurence Guinness, chief executive of the Childhood Trust.

“Children are suffering appalling abuses of their rights with devastating consequences for their health, education, and life chances,” he added.

As of October 2021, there were 42,290 families living in temporary accommodation in London.

In Southwark alone, more than 16,500 households are on a waiting list for housing, with half of these families containing children.

news@southwarknews.co.uk A family of four from Ecuador has won permission in the High Court to sue Southwark Council for saying severe overcrowding in their home was a ‘deliberate act’ and ‘penalising’ them on the housing waiting list.

Milton, along with his wife and two teenage children aged nineteen and fourteen, repeatedly asked Southwark Council to be placed on a priority list for social housing, having spent the last five years in a tiny Walworth studio flat.

But in July 2021, he claims the council issued the family with a decision letter effectively saying Milton should have left his family in Ecuador - almost 6,000 miles away.

“I can confirm that we have offered lots of support to them [the family], that we did not infer or say that they should have stayed in Ecuador – we assessed their housing situation in relation to their move from Ecuador, and also from Lambeth,” said Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for housing and homelessness.

“We also offered them suitable housing in the private sector and asked if they wished to make a homeless application, which may include temporary accommodation.

“These offers were declined. We are still here to offer the family any support they require and I sincerely hope their housing situation is soon resolved,” she added.

surname not to be published, has been stuck on the less urgent band 3 housing list for years, described his living situation as “very hard.”

“My children cannot study in this environment since the space is limited, our flat does not contain any room, and everything is included with the kitchen,” he said.

Difficulties finding suitable housing for his family in the private sector, including problems communicating with landlords, unaffordable deposits and other requirements, such as proof of fulltime employment, led Milton to seek the

council’s support.

“We had no other options to rent the studio flat due to our financial situation,” says Milton.

Yet, he claims, the council refused to accept his arguments, insisting that overcrowding was due to the choices he made.

by Human Rights Watch and the Childhood Trust has found.

The 51-page report, titled ‘I want us to live like humans again’, described how children are growing up with toxic mould, cold temperatures, and a lack of adequate space, while criticising the government for failing to provide adequate housing for homeless families.

“These poor conditions constitute a violation of the right to adequate housing and children’s rights to an adequate standard of living,” said Human Rights Watch in a statement.

After being placed by Southwark Council in out-of-borough temporary accommodation in Croydon, the youngest of Layla’s four daughters, Israa, six, developed acute respiratory problems, despite not having any pre-existing health conditions.

“The house had a problem with mould”, Layla explained. “Israa’s bedroom was the worst room in the entire house. It was unimaginable.”

Israa has recently been diagnosed with asthma and obstructive sleep apnea, as well as needing an operation on her nose to ease her irregular breathing.

When Layla raised the issue of mould with Southwark Council, she says they told her it was only temporary accommodation, and she would not be there forever.

She remained there for three years.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness at Southwark Council, said: “London is in the grip of a spiralling homelessness crisis.

“The Government’s welfare reforms, coupled with astronomical rent levels in the private sector, which far outstrip LHA rates, have made the housing

market increasingly unaffordable. This leaves people with no option but to seek help from local authorities, and an unavoidable over-reliance on temporary accommodation.”

The housing crisis is not only affecting children’s health, but also their mental well-being and education.

“Space to play is a luxury,” said Francesca, another mother who was placed in a single room with her threeyear-old daughter in Lewisham by Southwark Council. Her daughter had to just sit on the floor next to the bed with nothing to do all day.

This situation was made worse by the school closures during Covid-19, with

Rats, cockroaches, mice and mould: ‘My temporary accommodation hell’ Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A young mother was told by Southwark Council that her rat, mice, cockroach and mould-infested flat in Peckham "might not be [her] dream home".

Peckham-born Lauryn Carter, 24, has lived in the one-bed flat on Queen's Road since July 2020, when she was given it after she gave birth to her son Romi. She said she noticed cockroaches around the outside of the property when she moved in, but was in denial at first.

"A week or so in, I started to see little things running across the floor, and I was thinking 'what is that?' I was looking, and I thought 'no way, that looks like baby cockroaches'. I thought 'that’s disgusting'."

It was only a few months in that Ms Carter decided to raise the issue with Southwark Council, who sent the pest control team round.

Officers have put in place measures to catch the cockroaches, as well as fumigating the flat - but seemingly to no avail in the intervening year and a half. A recent pest control report still showed there were cockroaches in the property.

Former nursery and after-school worker Ms Carter said the cockroach infestation was bad enough. "It's a hygienic thing. I would say that I’m very clean. Cleaning is something that I love to do. I keep my things in organised ways. I try and keep on top of the surfaces. [The infestation] makes me feel like I don’t know what to do, like I'm not doing the right thing for my son."

But a few months ago, the situation deteriorated further when Ms Carter found that her son was refusing to take his shoes off inside the flat.

"I said 'we’re inside of the house, don’t be silly'. I was thinking 'this is a bit strange of him'. He was standing there, and he started really crying and I turned and I could see this rat. The thing was huge - you could see it wasn’t a bloody mouse, it was nasty".

Ms Carter was scared that the rat, which she believes is pregnant, could have bitten her son because he was pointing at his hand while in floods of tears. "But there wasn’t a bite mark, no blood, it didn’t actually get to him, but it must have really scared him.

She sprang into action, realising she needed to tackle the problem.

"But at that point it tried to climb up the wall, it was looking like it was going to jump at us. I grabbed my son and ran away. I believe it is behind my washing machine. I can hear it screaming, this high pitched sound."

The rat has since been joined by mice, which Ms Carter can still hear. "I heard one inside my wall nearest to my bedroom. There may be other ones now. I’ve seen it, it keeps going back."

To add insult to injury, the flat is also mouldy, and the heating and hot water have been off for the past week amid the recent cold weather.

Ms Carter said she is desperate to be moved on, and feels that the council haven't taken the issue seriously enough. An email sent to her by her housing officer said "please note that your property is a temporary accommodation, it may not be the ideal property of your dream, but we try to ensure at all times that they are in good condition to ensure quality of life while you bid for your permanent accommodation."

Ms Carter told the News: "I have no quality of life...

It makes me feel like crap. I have a baby, it’s a health and safety matter for him. I’m afraid to have him here. I have nowhere else to go. It pushes me into a corner where I’m depressed about it."

The officer said in a separate email that her rat, mice and cockroach issues are not a good enough reason to get her moved, because they are technically "treatable" - even though the problem has been going on for eighteen months.

In March 2021, the council adopted a 'good homes standard' for temporary accommodation, which among other things, includes ensuring that flats have "appropriate... levels of cleanliness and that they are free from hazards and pests."

As well as an awful personal situation for a young mother to be in, the story is a powerful illustration of the pressures on the council's housing waiting list. Some 16,000 households are on the list, and 3,500 are in temporary accommodation.

As we have reported extensively, Southwark has been battling with campaigners to get more social housing built on existing estates to tackle the waiting list.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, the council's cabinet member for social housing and homelessness, said: “It’s fair to say that occasionally, some properties do not meet our current Good Homes Standard, because they were let before it was introduced, but we hope that going forward, our standard of [temporary accommodation] and satisfaction from residents will continue to improve.

She added that she was "sorry" that Ms Carter "has had some issues in this case" and that pest control hadn't found vermin at a recent inspection, despite a recent report seen by the News showing there were rats, mice and cockroaches at the property.

"We will continue to monitor that situation while she waits for a permanent home,” Cllr Cryan added.

Bermondsey residents left with sewage flood for months after drain collapses Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a Bermondsey council estate were shocked to find sewage bubbling up into their gardens - and even up through a toilet after an underground drain collapsed.

One couple living on the Southwark Park Estate noticed a relatively small amount of water coming up through their garden on November 14 last year and told Southwark Council. Council officers visited but the problem continued - and got worse over Christmas and the new year, until the couple's garden was completely flooded with brown, foulsmelling sewage water by this week.

Joanne told the News that the strong smell of sewage had got into her house and because it was coming from outside, she was unable to open a window to air out the property. On one occasion, water even bubbled up from her toilet.

By this week, the problem had spread to neighbouring properties, with the gardens next door also flooded with waste water. Tanika, who lives with her young daughter and son, who has special needs, said the fact her garden was now inaccessible was a real problem for him, because he benefits from being outside.

Tanika said that she had also had toilet paper come out of her drainpipe.

Pat, who also lives nearby on the estate, has also had her garden flooded with sewage. She said: "It's horrendous - we shouldn't have to live like this... it isn't fair."

Carol, a neighbour a few doors down, pointed out that some people on the estate had problems with their health,

and the standing sewage water could not be good for anyone. "We've got one virus to live with already," she said. "We don't need any others."

There appeared to be some uncertainty about whether the pipe was the responsibility of the council or Thames Water. Thames Water staff visited the site last Thursday, January 21 and a spokesperson for the company said they sympathise with residents, but because it was a private section of pipe, the council had to deal with it.

Council officers have since got rid of the standing water and will repair the drain, although there is no clear timeline for this work.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “This is clearly a really unpleasant situation for our residents so we are glad to have found the source of the problem.

The collapsed drain will be repaired, preventing any further issues. The surface water has been cleared and our team will return to make good on any areas affected, including replacing the top soil and deep cleaning the gardens.

“We cleared blockages on several other occasions after residents contacted us. Sometimes this was during the day or out-of-hours so different teams and contractors were responding over the festive period. We can only apologise for not recognising that the issue was persistent and required further The original flood investigation sooner.”

Two billion litres of raw sewage went into Thames in just two days

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk More than two billion litres of raw sewage flowed into the Thames in two days from a waste water treatment plant, a report has found.

Thames Water, which runs the Mogden water treatment works where the October 2020 incident took place, admitted it was "unacceptable".

Parliament’s environmental audit committee published a report which found that on October 3 and 4 the west London plant "spilled 1 billion litres plus, which is the equivalent of 400 Olympic-sized swimming pools of sewage each day." That is the equivalent of sixteen Olympic swimming pools an hour for two days.

October 3 and 4 were among the wettest days on record. Water companies are legally allowed to

discharge waste water into rivers if they are at risk of becoming overwhelmed, to prevent possible leaks into the streets or people's homes.

Thames Water's chief executive Sarah Bentley said that the company would have had to have another facility the same size as Mogden to cope with the rainfall on those two days.

A spokesperson for Thames Water said: "We regard all discharges of untreated sewage as unacceptable and will work with the government, Ofwat and the Environment Agency to accelerate work to stop them being necessary.

"Our aim will always be to try and do the right thing for our rivers and for the communities who love and value them. We have a long way to go - and we certainly can't do it on our own but the ambition is clear.

Beloved shopkeeper loses immigration appeal Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe shopkeeper who has been called a "pillar of the community" by friends and neighbours could have to leave the country after eleven years, following the Home Office's decision to reject his immigration appeal.

As we reported, Vimal Pandya (pictured), who works at Halai General Stores near Rotherhithe Street, went through a series of nightmarish and expensive setbacks with the Home Office in the years after arriving in the UK on a student visa in 2011.

He has been living in the UK without permission since 2015 but has become a hugely important part of his local

community in Rotherhithe, helping out dozens of vulnerable families in the pandemic and getting a letter of thanks on behalf of the Queen for his efforts.

Despite all this, Mr Pandya was investigated by the Home Office again last year - and he found last Wednesday, January 19, that his appeal had been unsuccessful, meaning he has to leave the country by February 2 or challenge the decision again, which would entail yet more legal costs.

Having already spent £40,000, much of which was borrowed, Mr Pandya said he does not have any more money. His supporters in Rotherhithe have launched a fundraiser on his behalf.

But, sounding dejected, Mr Pandya added: "I don’t have any steam left any more. I don’t know what to do. I’m gutted.

It doesn’t feel right."

He said he and his solicitor were

unhappy with the arguments the Home Office gave in their letter explaining the refusal, some of which seemed "contradictory", the lawyer said.

Mr Pandya collected nearly 80 letters from supporters backing his appeal and a petition calling on the Home Office to let him stay got more than 83,000 signatures. Neither appears to have worked in his favour.

The Home Office said in response to our original article that it does not comment on individual cases. Beware after 80-year-old disabled woman is robbed by 'distraction burglars' in Camberwell

An 80-year-old disabled Camberwell woman and her granddaughter were robbed of hundreds of pounds in cash, as well as jewellery, by men pretending to fix their water supply.

The woman, who did not want to be named, said she was sitting at her home on Elmington Estate on Wednesday, January 12, when she heard a banging at her door.

The woman, who is in a wheelchair, went to answer and a tall man with dark hair and dark eyes said he had come to look at her water supply. She let him in because she had previously had problems with leaks from above.

Unbeknownst to her, the man let an accomplice in who went upstairs to her granddaughter’s bedroom. The first man looked at the taps in the kitchen, turning them on and off while wearing gloves, which she thought was strange even at the time.

“All of a sudden I heard the bedroom door upstairs - I thought it was my granddaughter. I shouted out three times,” she told the News.

As the first man eventually turned to leave, his accomplice slipped out with him but not before the victim got a look at him - shorter, thinner and with mousy hair.

When the granddaughter got back, she saw that her purse had been robbed, and lots of jewellery had gone too, which was not insured. “He left a rotten smell up there too,” her grandmother said.

She had also lost money from her purse, meaning a total of £800 was gone.

Sadly this was not the first time she had been robbed either, losing hundreds of pounds in an earlier incident several years ago.

The woman said that several other people on her estate had been targeted

by the same men, with one household asked about a broken washing machine, and another about gas.

Because she sleeps on the ground floor, she says she is finding it hard to sleep, because every time she hears something in the night, it reminds her of the robbery.

She added that she wants to raise awareness of this issue and to warn other people to be more cautious, so they

don’t suffer similar treatment.

A spokesperson for the police confirmed that the woman contacted them and that there had been no arrests so far.

They added that police think this could be linked to other robberies and are urging anyone who has any information to call 101 ref 3001049/22.

news@southwarknews.co.uk Plans for a significant development project around Millwall’s stadium look set to be approved by Lewisham Council this week.

Lewisham Council has signalled it will approve thousands of new homes, shops and an auditorium around Millwall’s Den at a planning committee meeting on Thursday.

The 1 billion pound development will affect land at Surrey Canal Road, Stockholm Road, Bolina Road and Rollins Street.

But a proportion of the 3,500 homes and revamp of the club’s football stadium promised under the decades-long scheme are still under consideration.

“The application is recommended for approval subject to planning conditions and completion of an s106 agreement,” the council’s agenda for Thursday’s meeting says.

Section 106 agreements are made between the developer and the local authority which seek to ensure the developer must reduce their impact on the community.

They are often subject to intense negotiation and may be modified or discharged.

The proposed scheme would be

delivered in five phases, with the first bringing new 600 homes to the area, while roads, parking, business floorspace, cafes, pubs, restaurants and new overground station coming in the later stages.

The combined area of these flats will

be 4000,000 sq m in three 32-storey tower blocks of 200 flats each, 200 of which will be deemed affordable housing.

Borough man jailed for five years for blackmailing people he met on Grindr

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Borough man has been sent to prison for five years after blackmailing and threatening people he met on the gay dating app Grindr.

Anouar Sabbar, of Cole Street just south of Borough Tube station, sought out men on the app and after consensual sex, said he was an escort and demanded money from the victims.

Sabbar also threatened violence or blackmail to intimidate his victims, who were between 25 and 57 years old, the police said.

He stole £2,360 between April 2019 and June 2021. The court heard that once he got the money, he would block the victim on the app, which automatically removed the online conversation, making it difficult for him to be traced.

He would also swap his SIM cards and mobile phone number regularly and often changed his hairstyle so he wasn’t recognised.

After one victim refused to pay Sabbar, he told him someone would come round to beat him up.

Another time, police said that Sabbar threatened to tell the victim’s girlfriend that they had sex.

A spokesperson for Millwall FC said: “Millwall Football Club welcomes the news that the initial planning application for the New Bermondsey redevelopment has been recommended for approval. This is a significant step forward for what is a much-needed regeneration.

“The club hopes that Lewisham Council can now hasten the finalisation of the lease for land around The Den so that Millwall can be at the heart of these endeavours as promised.”

Several planning objections have been made to the council, surrounding potential impacts on the Hatcham Conservation Area, air quality and access to daylight and sunlight for neighbouring properties.

“The harm to these properties is considered to be outweighed by public benefit including over 1000 new affordable homes across the scheme, and provision of new transport infrastructure,” said the council.

If approved, work would also include the demolition of buildings at Oron Business Centre.

Guild House and part of Rollins House on Surrey Canal Road will be left as they are.

In the agenda, the council recommended that: “Lewisham Council be advised that the uses proposed are generally supported; however, the application does not currently comply with the London Plan.

“Where the associated concerns within this report are addressed, the application may become acceptable in strategic planning terms.”

Lewisham Council has been approached for comment.

southwark Man banned from the city for ten years after string of burglaries

By Herbie Russell news@southwarknews.co.uk A convicted burglar living in Old Kent Road is banned from the City of London for ten years after being given a criminal behaviour order (CBO).

Neville Patrick Stanbury (pictured) was arrested in October 2021 and later convicted of five counts of burglary after stealing from numerous premises across the City.

The City of London Police then applied for him to be served with a CBO, which was granted by the judge on the day of his sentencing, December 6 2021.

Detective Sergeant Kirsty Richardson of the City of London Police said: “We are pleased that His Honour Judge Ian Darling was able to approve the CBO... preventing Stanbury from targeting further premises in the Square Mile.

“Stanbury is a prolific criminal, and his most recent offences, which included theft of electrical equipment from five premises across the City, cost local businesses almost £40,000 in damages and replacement of property.

“Theft from large organisations is not a victimless crime. Businesses have been hit hard during the

Covid-19 pandemic, and criminal activity such as this could be a breaking point for many."

Stanbury is now banned from postcodes EC1, 2, 3, 4 and any road within the City of London, identifiable by the City of London crest.

On top of his geographic ban, he must complete three years of community supervision, six months of drug rehabilitation and 180 hours of unpaid work at Inner London Crown Court.

He is also forbidden from tailgating any person into a building he doesn’t have access to, impersonating employees or selling laptops or electronic tablets.

He is required to attend court every six weeks so that a judge can monitor his progress.

Retired greyhound dionne inspires Peckham coffee business helping needy animals Dionne, a former racing greyhound, inspired her adoptive owners to set up their own coffee business which donates the proceeds to animal rescue centres across the UK.

Self-described “animal lovers” and vegans Marcus Wood and Rhian Nholan, set up Sanctuary Coffee after a visit to Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare, where they found Dionne their pet greyhound.

They hope to provide a steady stream of income for the greyhound rescue centre through the proceeds of their coffee enterprise, with a specialist line of ‘Sweet Dionne’ coffee generating £1 for every bag sold.

“After meeting her, we got to know the rescue centre better and spent a lot of time with the dogs,” said Marcus. “We were shocked when we realised how much it costs to run one of these places.”

“Our love of animals and wanting to help the sanctuary came together.

We realised this is space that wasn't occupied but should be,” he added.

It costs between £15,000 to £30,000 a month to maintain an animal sanctuary, with large sums required for food, vets bills and keeping the lights on.

By selling 50kg of coffee per day the couple thinks they can raise enough money in donations to cover half of the sanctuary’s costs.

So far they have raised £3,000.

“We always loved animals, but as soon as we met her [Dionne], we realised she was one of hundreds of thousands of greyhounds in need. It is a global issue,” said Marcus.

“There was no need to stop at greyhounds, so we reached out to lots of other animal sanctuaries.”

Now Marcus and Rhain are also

raising funds for a farm animal sanctuary in Kent, a horse respite centre in Watford, a pig rescue in Wales and a seagull rehabilitation centre in Brighton.

“It was almost impossible to choose which one to start with,” said Marcus.

“Animal charities are close to our hearts. We wanted to do more than just give the odd bit from our personal finances. Money is tight and you cannot donate as much as you want.”

“Why not raise money through a business we thought,” he added.

Living in Twickenham, the pair have partnered up with Old Spice, a coffee roasting establishment based in Peckham, making use of their swish facilities and equipment.

Their coffee beans are sourced directly from farmers in the developing world and they use carbon-neutral, plastic-free packaging.

Maudsley: Best in class

A south London school for children with mental health problems has kept its ‘outstanding rating’ for the third time in a row, following an OFSTED inspection.

The Bethlem and Maudsley school is for children who are being treated at the hospitals of the same name.

The school is currently near the Bethlem hospital in Beckenham but is moving to Denmark Hill near the Maudsley in September next year.

OFSTED found the school has very high expectations for pupils' behaviour, while praising the consistency and stability that staff provide at a key moment in their lives.

"This result is a testament to how the staff and the students work together - finding a path to a happier future", said headteacher John Ivens.

This was the school’s first

inspection since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

“I would like to pass on my congratulations to the school’s leaders who have been praised in the report for their excellent subject knowledge and the stability the school provides at this significant moment for pupils,” said David Bradley, chief executive of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the schools.

“Bethlem and Maudsley Hospital School and the staff who work there are a real asset,” he added.

The school is moving to the Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People.

The new facility - which will be home to the largest group of mental health scientists and clinical academics in Europe - is set to open its doors in 2023.

Peckham artist heads up new charity A new charity providing mental health support to cancer patients and their families has acquired its first patron in the form of Peckham-based artist Remi Rough.

Mind Over Cancer was set up in June 2021 to provide pastoral support to current and former cancer patients and their support bubbles, who were diagnosed with cancer between birth and the age of 29.

The charity aims to give support to 1,250 people across East Anglia in 2022 and hopes to expand outside the region to offer vital mental health services across Britain in the future.

The charity is unique in that it extends its support to the patient’s family,

friends and partners, recognising that mental health disorders can arise in the close family and friends of someone with a cancer diagnosis.

Remi Rough has exhibited his work on the international stage for over 35 years, drawing from the graffitiorientated street art of Peckham. Most recently, Rough’s work was featured in The Royal Academy of Arts summer exhibition.

Susie Shaw, Founder and Chief Executive of Mind Over Cancer said: “Creating art can be an incredibly powerful way to express feelings, helps facilitate important discussions around mental health and can be used as a form of therapy, so we were obviously ecstatic when Remi

Comment It’s Southwark Labour’s turn to apologise for mould and damp

t is time for Southwark Labour to follow the lead of Hammersmith and Fulham Council by apologising to its tenants for mould and damp.

The Housing Ombudsman’s October 2021 report into mould and damp found that Southwark Council had the fifth-worst mismanagement rate of 142 landlords.

Hammersmith and Fulham Council topped that list, with both authorities holding similarly unfavourable rankings when it came to handling complaints related to mould or damp.

Southwark Labour council leader Kieron Williams, in a November response to a Liberal Democrat question, accepted there were mould and damp issues in the authority’s housing.

Liberal Democrat pressure forced him to later also express regret for serious incidents, such as an exploding radiator, in Southwark’s homes.

However, I believe he should go even further by following the actions of his Labour colleagues in Hammersmith and Fulham Council.

Earlier this month, a cabinet member for the south-west London authority rightfully apologised to its residents for the mould and damp issues detailed in the Housing Ombudsman’s report.

Southwark Labour need to follow suit.

This is especially the case in a year where tenants, already suffering from government-created cost-ofliving pressures, are now running into rent hikes of 4.1 per cent at the hands of the Labour council.

As discussed in a prior column, these residents have had numerous other problems in Southwark housing.

In a survey of council tenants, of 800 respondents, the vast majority said they experienced district heating outages.

Newspapers, additionally, have reported on the frequent instances in which heating has failed in estates and left its residents in the winter cold.

These same tenants would face sluggish council customer service, with calls or emails going unanswered and pleas for repairs left ignored Previously reported statistics showed that the authority’s contact centres have repeatedly missed their own targets to answer calls speedily in the last five years.

The delivery of the council’s basic services is clearly not good enough.

Southwark Labour’s cabinet have now approved a raise in tenants’ rent in a year of extraordinary inflationary pressure and in spite of this multitude of issues.

If it feels such a rent rise is necessary, it should at least have the courage to formally apologise to its tenants specifically for mould and damp problems.

oing into the New Year, it is important that we remain optimistic about our gradual recovery from the pandemic and come together as a community to work towards this. But it would be irresponsible not to raise alarm bells about the impending cost of living crisis which will hit local families and households.

Inflation is at its highest point in 30 years and is currently outstripping wages. Energy bills are set to sharply increase. The cost of transport is rising and pay-packets are about to be hit by the hike in National Insurance contributions.

It really is the perfect storm.

This all raises the question of what welfare system and national minimum wage is for if they do not even help to cover the costs of basic necessities?

In Southwark, the latest stats show that 40,000 people were claiming Universal Credit in the lead-up to Christmas. This large section of our

community is set to be the hardest hit as food prices are pushed up and when energy bills surge this April. Many are already facing the daily struggle of putting enough food on the table or keeping their homes warm as winter bites.

The Institute for Fiscal Studies has recently called on the Government to double Universal Credit payments to help the lowest income households weather this upcoming spike in the cost of living crisis. At the very least, VAT on household fuel bills should be scrapped as an urgent measure.

However, Ministers have not yet shown any indication that they will be willing to take the bold action needed to stop thousands more Londoners from falling into poverty.

It is not just Universal Credit that needs fixing. Too many Londoners are being forced out of the capital by increasing rents and even more of the poorest families with young children are left with no choice but to live in homes that are too small and unsuitable.

The Mayor is stepping in here by addressing the core issue of social housing supply in the capital and has equipped Southwark Council with £90 million to invest in this. However, in the shorter-term, the Government must increase Local Housing Allowance to cover the average rents in boroughs like ours, where there is a growing chasm between the most well-off and the most deprived.

Plunging thousands more Southwark residents into hardship will also have a knock-on impact on local businesses as their spending power is reduced. The Financial Times has recently published figures showing that in-person sales across the borough have declined by 29 per cent, with the food, drink and entertainment sectors seeing a 49 per cent decline.

In the coming months, I will use every opportunity at City Hall to highlight the financial struggles that local people and businesses are facing and urge the Government to take the action needed.

Targeting motorists is an "easy win" owing to the high regulation of Road Tax, MOT, insurance, Driving License, etc. What should be done is much more creative around ALL transport users. A new "Cycle Tax", for example, would be effective if the majority of the money raised went into better facilities like cycleways and paths away from vehicular traffic, as well as safety.

Isla Caton is a little superhero who will and should go down in Millwall and West Ham history

S

even-year-old Isla Caton is a real life little superhero who battled cancer for five years and in that time united two teams known for their fierce and bitter rivalry.

Hardened supporters will say there is nothing more important than football and their club, but this little girl from Stratford showed that love compassion and hope for the life for a child outweighs everything else.

We want to join the West Ham and Millwall Football clubs, and the hordes of fans from both sides to send out heartfelt sympathy to Isla’s family.

We have covered her sad but inspirational journey since the family was told in 2018 that she had just three months to live, having been diagnosed with neuroblastoma - a rare type of cancer. She had become ill the year before and was being treated at Great Ormond Street Hospital. The battle took her for specialist treatment in Barcelona, hope arrived when she told in March 2019 she was cancer free, but the disease returned and after even more treatment the family finally had to face the cruel truth in December last year that she would not go on.

On Isla’s last JustGiving page, her mum Nicola said: “We have now decided to spend our time making sure Isla has the most wonderful life we can give her and to make as many amazing memories as we can, so instead of fundraising for medical costs we now feel it’s time to give Isla as much happiness as humanly possible - if anyone deserves it, it’s our baby girl.”

She added: “Isla is a real life superhero and we pray with all we are that we can get her well, but for now we live for today and make that as magical as we can.”

And for the fans who raised thousands from both side of the Thames she had spread her own little bit of magic. The united front shows that despite the biggest of rivalries the fans have the biggest hearts.

It will and should be her legacy; there will be a minute’s applause on Saturday but we hope that she is marked every year for years to come, that something lasting between the two club comes from this.

What that will be is up to the fans. Rest in peace little Isla.

Gang wars go one step beyond Shakespeare gets tuned-up with Two-Tone while ‘Rude Boys’ stab each other to a rock steady beat in a skanked-up Romeo & Juliet, writes Michael Holland.

A cast of six superb performers created a multitude of sinners in a Brixton setting, but when there is a pub fight between two gangs - The Montagues and The Capulets - the simmering truce they had boils over. So, when Juliet Capulet catches the eye of Romeo Montague you know that will turn the heat right up.

Of course, when star-crossed lovers take a fancy to each other, all threats of violence, or being outcast by the family, have no impact on quelling any desire. What it does is force them into the shadows where they have their dangerous liaisons and forget all else.

Unfortunately, nobody else is willing to forget the enmity between the feuding families and it is definitely not all’s well that ends well in this Shakespearean tale of love and loss.

But while the complexities of this secret affair are played out on the stage we are treated to a stomping Ska and Reggae soundtrack that kept the action bouncing along from start to heartbreaking finish.

Each and every one of the cast stood out as a winner, no matter whose side you were on. Joey Ellis brought an appreciated seam of comedy to the coalface of despair through his three characters; Yinka Awoni mixed up the 15th century language with Caribbean patois for Friar Laurence, and pure Street as Benvolio; Fiona Skinner marched around marvellously, being angry and giving it large portions before her bad attitude got her taken out; Samuel Tracy and Laura Lake Adebisi just had to look beautiful as the eponymous young lovers, which they did - We could all see why he was willing to kill or die for her love.

But for me the turn of the night was Amy Loughton playing a spivvy drug dealer

(Apothecary) and the no-nonsense nurse to Juliet. She used her sing-song Welsh lilt and cheeky looks to make each of her lines hilarious.

Best of all, though, was when Amy suddenly picked up a saxophone and belted out a note-perfect One Step Beyond that elicited a brilliant ensemble

dance number that had everyone in the audience bopping away with them.

The exciting direction by Nicky Allpress also ensured that this Romeo & Juliet, drenched with famous quotes, and much to our pleasure, went one step beyond the usual realms of Shakespeare.

This production is part of the

Southwark Playhouse’s Shakespeare for Schools project, which will enable over 2,000 local young people to see the play for free. Not only will it potentially open the door to a love of Shakespeare to them, but will definitely get them seeking out the music that was the soundtrack to most of the audience members’ lives.

Fidel’s Conundrum mesmerises at Young Vic Paul Anthony Morris’s Conundrum is exactly that, but it is a conundrum that can be slowly, and methodically unpacked and solved, writes Michael Holland.

On a stark stage, Anthony Ofoegbu plays Fidel who, while sorting through old boxes, comes across his teenage diaries, which take him back to when he had his whole life ahead of him. But those diaries also put his whole life into stark relief on a visual timeline, and what he saw was the pressure placed on him because of his colour; the pressure of society, the pressure of racism, and the pressure of parents who, while believing they were protecting him, emphasised

the need to be ‘ten times better’ than others, which led to the pressure of feeling that being as good as white people would never be enough. And when that pressure builds up it often explodes into mental health problems.

Through words, mime and movement Fidel takes us through the Hells and Heavens of his past, his struggles and his achievements, although his list of A+ exam grades often meant he was turned down for jobs. But was being ‘over-educated’ the real reason for not getting those positions, or was it because Fidel is black?

We witness a traumatic time in Fidel’s life when medication seems

the only answer, but light is found at the end of his dark tunnel as he comes to the realisation that he knows who he is, that he is not who others tell him who he is, and that the difficulties he experienced were not his fault but the making of institutionalised racism in society.

Conundrum is not an easy watch.

Three of us got together after to unwrap the work, to pull it apart and see if we could put it back together in a form that we could understand. And then, when we did, we were still not sure if our conclusion was what the writer wanted us to come to.

Notwithstanding our own conundrum, Anthony Ofoegbu gave a

mesmerising performance under the direction of the writer, and received a standing ovation for his effort.

One of our trio was writer/actor Frank Prosper who I asked about the recurring ‘ten times better’ theme of the play. He replied, ‘I think he’s talking about African parents as my parents (Caribbean) only told me to be twice as good as the white kids.’

The Hamlet, who have a host of players missing, remain sixth in National League South and are now two matches unbeaten following a difficult beginning to 2022 which had seen them lose twice and draw once.

The club will take several swimmers to compete in individual events, and further swimmers to compete in the team relay events to be held there.

They have swimmers qualify for this event annually which is no small feat given the size of the club.

“We’re ready for the challenge and I’m sure our swimmers will do us proud,” Andy Moore, club chairman, said.

The club continues to seek new members across all squads from Academy to Masters.

They are also striving to offer as much competitive swimming as possible.

Throughout 2022 they will offer opportunities to swim at galas in the region.

sport@southwarknews.co.uk DISMAL, DESPERATE and depressing. Three words most likely in the minds and on the lips of Millwall fans trudging out of Bloomfield Road last Saturday.

The cold weather matches the current mood in SE16 after an awful start to 2022 that has seen Millwall lose every one of their games in all competitions.

It was the first time since he took over that Gary Rowett has lost three league games in a row. You have to go back to April 2018 for the last time he experienced that, as manager of Derby.

The main complaint from Lions fans was the lack of attacking intent. It does have to be noted that the dearth of attacking players is a factor. However, that reasoning can only be taken to a certain level.

The south Londoners’ lack of creativity

was laid bare by the seaside, with Tom Bradshaw, Sheyi Ojo, Jed Wallace and George Saville all missing. All players that can create and some who can finish.

The Seasiders had this game in the palm of their hands through two of their own creative forces in Shayne Lavery and Josh Bowler, two energetic and positive players that Millwall supporters would have wished were in their side.

It was Bowler who forced the first save of the game from Bartosz Bialkowski.

His shot deflected off a Lions defender, but the Pole stuck out a leg to keep it out as Blackpool began to turn up the heat on a chilly January day.

That chance increased the tempo of the game. Shaun Hutchinson’s header from Scott Malone’s free-kick was gathered well by Daniel Grimshaw. The goalkeeper then set the hosts up for a quick counter-attack with Bowler again causing problems and forcing the Lions defence to intervene.

Lavery provided Bialkowski with his next assignment, the Millwall stopper making another fine save.

Millwall offered little in response.

Benik Afobe had a shot blocked but he and strike partner Mason Bennett were isolated as the visitors were dominated in the first half.

Against the run of play, Murray Wallace had a golden chance to give his side the lead just before the break. The ball fell to his favoured left foot from Jake Cooper’s header down but he pulled his low effort just past the far post.

However, it was no great surprise when the hosts took the lead ten minutes after half-time. CJ Hamilton twisted and turned his way into the box, his shot was kept out brilliantly by Bialkowski only for Lavery to turn in the rebound and fire Neil Critchley’s side in front.

Gary Madine almost made it 2-0 but his goal-bound effort was deflected wide by Wallace.

Rowett introduced Tyler Burey and the 20-year-old winger was the brightest spark on a bleak day. Burey went closest to bringing the hapless Lions level as he cut in from the left and beat two defenders before firing low towards the far corner, but Grimshaw dived to his left to push the ball away.

Burey’s cameo was really the only positive from Millwall’s point of view.

Jed Wallace could still leave in this transfer window but it would be a big ask for Burey to step into his boots.

Oliver Burke made his debut after his

loan move from Sheffield United but more attacking reinforcements are badly needed.

After three consecutive Championship defeats, the spectres of West Bromwich Albion and Fulham loom in two of their next three games. It could go either way.

It could be the challenge that brings the best out of them like it has done on so many occasions, or it could effectively be the end of the top-six challenge in early February.

The Lions have managed to score just twelve goals in their last twelve Championship games. Bradshaw’s injury and the constant speculation around Wallace’s future have not helped the situation with Rowett admitting that the uncertainty is beginning to affect other members of the squad. That’s not really a surprise. Wallace has been Millwall’s main goal threat in the last two seasons and was this season before his injury in early December.

Millwall need others to step up, whether that’s players such as Burey and Bennett, Burke, or the hoped-for new recruits before next Monday.

It’s not just the forwards all the responsibility should be on. Only one league goal from open play this season has come from the wing-back position.

The three midfielders last Saturday have only scored one goal between them in the Championship all campaign.

It’s not rocket science to see where there is big room for improvement. But Millwall have to make it happen fast.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SHAUN HUTCHINSON has admitted Millwall have gone “a bit soft” – and dismissed the notion that the Covid-19 disruption is an excuse for the recent poor form.

It’s a big admission for a player who could never be accused of standing back from a battle.

But he knows that the Lions have fallen short this season, particularly around what should be and has been their main strength: being hard to score against and hard to beat.

Millwall have lost four consecutive games for the first time under Gary Rowett and have kept only five clean sheets in the league this season.

That’s compared to ten after the same number of games in the previous campaign.

The Lions have won only two of their last ten league games. They have lost five of them, four against teams that were below them in the table at kick-off.

The latest was last weekend at Blackpool, the promoted side overtaking them in the table.

“The Peterborough game was one of the season lows. It was more disappointment whereas I think the Blackpool game was probably more frustrating,” Hutchinson said.

“I think we’ve just kind of gone a bit soft as a team and we need to do everything we can to fix that.

“We’re not conceding many but we’re not keeping clean sheets. It’s been mentioned a few times now, we need to get back to being resolute as a team and managing games a bit better.

“Because we drew a lot of games at the start of the season we became a little bit obsessed with trying to win games all the time.

“It’s gone full circle on us a little bit and now we’re throwing away games being so determined to try to win the game.”

As Hutchinson referenced, only six teams have conceded fewer league goals than Millwall this season.

But the lack of shut-outs is a cause for concern, with only one in those last ten games.

“Yeah, 100 per cent, especially as a defender it’s really frustrating,” Hutchinson said. “We’ve got to find out the reasons and potentially what is the cause of that and try to find an answer for that.

“It’s always been a big part of how we’ve done well in a season, keeping clean sheets and building from there.

“Like I said, it’s not like we’re conceding loads of goals, we’re just conceding them at the wrong times and potentially just being a bit soft in key moments of the game.”

Millwall have lost Tom Bradshaw, Sheyi Ojo and Jed Wallace to injuries in the last six weeks. They have won only one of their last five games without Wallace.

Hutchinson was asked if those setbacks and the Covid-19 outbreak that hit the squad in December are legitimate excuses for the poor results this year.

He replied: “Whenever you get injuries to starting players it’s going to affect you but I think it’s unfair to say Covid because every team has had to deal with it the same way. I wouldn’t particularly put it down to that.

“You’re going to lose key members of the team throughout the season, that’s just part and parcel of it and it’s up to everybody else to do their job, step up and produce what they need to.

“We do keep on getting ourselves right amongst the mix and then we

have a setback.”

Hutchinson, 31, made his 200th appearances in all competitions for Millwall against Crystal Palace this month.

It’s impressive longevity from the former Motherwell defender, particularly after injuries restricted him to just 22 appearances in his first campaign in SE16 following only eleven games the previous season for Fulham.

Only seven of his 202 appearances have come off the bench.

“Yeah but you don’t see many sub centre-halves [coming on] anyway.

But I think I’ve been quite consistent over the years and stuck at it,” Hutchinson said.

“There have been more highs than lows, thankfully, and I’ve enjoyed it.

“When I just joined Millwall I had gone six months not really playing much football before then coming in to try and kick on and go.

“I think I was just unfortunate at the time to pick up the injuries I did “It’s a milestone I’m proud of. I’m happy to get there and hopefully there will be many more.

“It’s been an enjoyable ride and that milestone’s crept up quickly.

“It’s one of these things where I

think my face fit at the club. I think the fans and the club get me and I get the club and the fans.

“I’m happy and it’s nice to get those milestones.”

Hutchinson should have plenty of reserves of resilience to draw on after more than five seasons with the club.

He knows that he and his teammates have got out of lots of sticky situations in the past.

“We’ve always bounced back as a team,” he said. “Other than one season [in the Championship] we’ve always bounced back really well and got results when we needed to.

“We’re experienced enough to know how to try to get ourselves out of this situation.

“I think we’ve got to turn the focus on taking every game as it comes, as much as that is a cliché. It’s just because you get a little bit caught up in what the objective is [fighting for the play-offs] but first and foremost we need to start winning some football games.

“We’re just going to look at every game individually and see where we can give ourselves half a chance.

“We just need to try to pick up as many results as we can as soon as we can.”

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ARE set to be without Jed Wallace and George Saville when they take on West Bromwich Albion at The Den on Saturday.

Wallace has struggled to return after a quad injury while Saville has a back and neck issue and was seeing another specialist this week.

Club captain Alex Pearce has returned to training.

Daniel Ballard could train with his parent club Arsenal next week. Boss Gary Rowett is also without Sheyi Ojo, Tom Bradshaw and Ryan Leonard.

New signing Oliver Burke could make his home debut and Tyler Burey is pushing for a start.

West Brom have conceded just 20 goals in 27 games. Despite the Lions’ recent struggles they still have the seventh-best defence in the Championship.

West Brom’s manager Valerien Ismael has built a reputation for having direct, rugged sides after he led Barnsley to the play-offs last season in his first job in English football.

After the teams drew 1-1 at the Hawthorns last September when Ballard scored the equaliser, Ismael said the Millwall “[didn’t] want to take any risk and [wanted] to take the intensity out of the game. The game plan from the opponent was another way we have to deal with and Millwall made it difficult for us.”

Rowett referenced those remarks when asked about the challenge this weekend of trying to score against a side with the best defence in the division.

“They’re a very difficult team to break down,” Rowett said. “They’re a side that can also score goals because they have lots and lots of riches in those forward areas.

a tough team to play against from setpieces and in open play.

“The challenge is always the same, you have to try to impose yourself on the opposition.

“They have a very specific style of play, but I don’t really care about that. People have opinions on that but they have

no problems with that, I’ve got a lot of respect for their manager and players.

“We’re looking forward to the game.”

Scotland international Burke was considered one of the most talented teenagers in the UK when he moved from Nottingham Forest to German side RB Leipzig for £12million in 2016.

There was another big-money move a year later as West Bromwich Albion paid £13million to bring him to the Premier League.

Only seven of his 45 league games across those two seasons were starts,

and he went on loan to Spanish side Alaves and Celtic before moving to Sheffield United in the summer of 2020.

He hadn’t played a Championship game since last August before he came on in the 1-0 defeat against the Tangerines.

Rowett was asked how he can help Burke reach his potential.

“He needs continuity, he needs someone that’s going to play him and give him a run of games even if he’s not finding the perfect form,” Rowett said.

“Every player wants that and every manager wants to try to do that.

“He’s a player that needs to be in space so there are certain counterattacking games with space available and that’s going to be really important.

“There are other games where we’re going to have to work hard to get him

into different areas to find space.

“I think he can play anywhere across a front three. I think he can play more or less anywhere but predominantly wider in a front four.

“Oli is a good footballer, he’s been with top clubs. You don’t go to those clubs unless you’re technically sound.

“His main attributes are his pace and his ability to open games up onev-one. That’s the kind of thing we encourage, give a little bit of freedom to our attackers to try to do that. If he can do that then he’s going to be a really good addition.

“But, look, he’s not going to come in and suddenly change everything on his own. He’s going to be another important factor that we think can help us improve and get through this difficult period.

“He can help us as much as we can help him.”

Millwall have lost their last three league games heading into this Saturday’s clash against West Bromwich Albion at The Den. They have won only two of their last ten Championship matches which has seen them go from level on points with sixth to eleven points off the play-offs.

made the long trip to Blackpool last weekend but their side left with nothing after a 1-0 defeat.

Hutchinson insisted the current run hurts the players just as much as the Millwall faithful. And he is not oblivious to the criticism.

“Obviously you can’t hide away from it completely but at the same time we’re players for the club, we want to win,” Hutchinson said.

“Nobody wants us to win more than us.

“If you think they hate us losing try being me when I lose. It’s not nice and certainly if I’m feeling frustrated about the performances then I’m sure they’re going to feel frustrated, too.

“I know exactly how they feel.

When you’re so passionate about

something and it doesn’t go your way it’s natural to feel that frustration and anger.

“But I suppose no one can fix it other than ourselves.

“We get the frustration, we’re trying everything we can. You can sense the frustration in the fans.

“They expect more from us, we expect more from ourselves, the gaffer expects more from us.

We’re doing everything we can to try and fix it and I suppose we just need to be trusted that we’re going to find the answer ourselves and work it out, really.”

While the Lions are in a difficult run, they have again shown their ability this season to come back from adversity to win games they are not favourites to.

Hutchinson knows it’s often against the big sides that Millwall surprise people.

“I’ve always said that, we’d be better off in the league if we could play the top six every week rather than the bottom six,” Hutchinson added.

“But we need to turn up because they’re obviously a big threat.

We’re competing in every game, really, it’s just these small things are popping up at vital points in the game and it’s losing us the game.

“We’re very competitive, it’s not as if we’re not competing with teams. But all we can do is look forward to the next game and it’s up to us to put things right.”

The Lions need to add attacking players ahead of Monday’s deadline, but also have their eye on the longer term.

“We’re having those conversations and they’re quite fluid,” Lions boss Gary Rowett said when he spoke to the News on Tuesday. “We’ve been close with one or two things this week but as is usually the case in January you can get really close and then just fall away.

“You’ve then got to move to the next option which can take a few days to tie down, it’s never, ever simple.

“There are one or two things that we’ve put to the club to say we think this could be a long-term option. That might not necessarily be a position that we’re desperate for right now but it could add competition to the squad to make us better long-term. We have to think like that.

“I’m well aware as a manager that results have not been ideal and we have to address that short-term, but I always think you have to try to do the right thing for the club long-term.

“That’s ongoing. Myself, Harvey [Bussell, head of recruitment], Steve [Kavanagh, CEO], John Berylson and the board will obviously have those discussions.

“Ultimately John will decide what he wants to do in this window.

“But all I can say again is he’s always been incredibly open and supportive of us trying to do things as long as they’re reasonable and sensible.”
