The council launched its Southwark Stands Together programme in 2020 to "tackle racial inequality" in the borough, including in its own ranks.

Ms Medley said at the overview and scrutiny committee meeting on Wednesday that the council continues to try to close the ethnicity pay gap, including by helping BAME staff get into leadership and middle management positions, as well as "significant changes to recruitment practices".

For comparison, Southwark's ethnicity pay gap is lower than the Greater London Authority, where the figure stood at 18 per cent as of 2019. The Office for National Statistics said in the same year that London's ethnicity pay gap as a whole was 23 per cent.

Unlike with the gender pay gap - which has gone down slightly from last year to 5.59 per cent - the council does not legally have to publish its ethnicity pay gap. Officers have published the figure for the purposes of "openness and transparency".

The council's 'disability pay gap' - another figure that does not legally have to be published - is 2.24 per cent.

For every £10 that a BAME member of council staff gets on average, a white employee gets £11.47 - an 'ethnic minority pay gap' of 14.68 per cent. This figure has grown slightly since last year.

Asked to explain the gap by Rye Lane councillor Peter Babudu at a council meeting last Wednesday evening, January 12, Southwark HR chief Melanie Medley agreed that it was "quite large and of concern".

She went on: "The workforce don’t feel there have been enough opportunities for underrepresented groups to have access to career progression, to different roles, to acquire promotions when they choose to move on in their careers.

Rehab scheme scrapped where volunteers died

Rents went down four years in a row before 2020, by order from the central government. Southwark's social housing chief Stephanie Cryan said council home rents would still be the eighth-lowest among any of the London boroughs.

The increase amounts to an average change of £4.24 per week, and differs depending on the size of the property. Service charges, garage charges, district heating and hot water charges will all also go up. The rent increase will come into effect from April 4.

Camberwell woman sets her sights on becoming UK’s first trans-gender MP Exclusive

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk Sarah Jane Baker - who claims to be the world’s longest-serving trans-gender prisoner has said she will “take on the big hitters” in the next General Election.

The 52-year-old intends to stand for the Richmond Park seat against former London mayoral hopeful Zac Goldsmith.

She said that, alongside “making sure that the foxes don't rip the bins apart”, one of her main policies would be to “stop the British government sending pregnant people to prison.”

“I want a seat at the big table, if I am to make the changes I want,” says Sarah. “If you are going to represent people you have to show them that you love and trust them. And that their interests are your number one concern,” she added.

Sarah spent 30 years in prison for attempting to murder another prisoner, after being imprisoned for kidnapping and torturing her stepmother’s brother., and has since thrown herself into local causes.

She was born on Shakespeare Road in Brixton, but spent most of her childhood in Peckham and Camberwell.

“When I was sneaking around the streets as a kid it was a bit dangerous,” she laughed.

“I was a little tranny with a violin, man! I thought I was going to get battered all the time.”

Sarah said that her early years in Camberwell were fraught with hardship. “When I was a child, I always wanted to live on Camberwell Grove, you know in one of those massive houses tucked away down there … but I knew that I would never be able to own one.”

“I come from a really poor family. Dad had numerous partners and lots of kids. He didn't raise any of us very well. But you know what? I am really lucky. Camberwell put a bit of grit in my blood,” she added.

An important influence on Sarah’s early years was the black community of South London, especially those from Jamaica. “This got right on my dad’s nerves,” says Sarah. He felt threatened by the influx of immigrants during the 50s and 60s. But to me it was normal.”

“I know there are problems .. but you need migrants, like you also need the trans community, we need to be a buffer against people who don't want to see diversity,” she added.

Sarah was sent to prison aged 21. She spent time in HMP Brixon, Whitemoor and others. During her time inside, she claimed over 50 inmates took their own lives.

prisons. “Lots of people I knew in jail came from our area,” she said. “Prison is not full of middle-class kids who have a decent family.”

“A lot of the poor kids in Camberwell and Peckham need some more opportunities. At the moment, you’re either going to jail or you’re going to stack shelves.

There’s nothing for us in Camberwell.”

Sarah has dedicated herself to prison abolitionism and local activism, since being released from prison in 2019. Her latest focus is gentrification, especially increasing property prices that, she believed, were changing who could live in the local area.

“I want a bit of dirt on my street, I want a bit of grit. I want real people. I want to see people with real world problems.”

“The thing I like the best about Camberwell is the cultural mix that we have. There’s a wonderful community around there. I love it . But I am afraid that the diversity of the community is going to go away.

We are going to end with all the same kinds of people.”

Sarah also expressed fears for the local LGBT community. She believed that in the last few years, especially after the Brexit vote, there has been an increase in hate crimes across London.

“I am part of the queer mafia,” said Sarah. “Trans people are everywhere and we are not going anywhere.

We will take political power.”

We have no choice,” she added.

“Society needs us too. There needs to be a place for everybody to fit in, places like Camberwell. if you are queer where are you going to live?

Sarah said that, despite its problems, she was happy to have spent some of her life in Camberwell. “I am really proud to be from South London.” “Amongst the shit and splendour of Camberwell is its magnificence.

“It is a rare little village,” she added.

The pink-toed tarantula was rescued by Mat Hawkins, an RSPCA officer on January 7 and taken to an animal hospital in Essex.

The 3.5cm tarantula is thought to be an abandoned pet. He will be looked after by hospital staff and hopefully will be given a new permanent home.

Mat said: “Passengers got more than they bargained for when they spotted this little guy on the train! He was shut inside a plastic tub so we believe he had been abandoned in the carriage.

“Thankfully passengers alerted staff who kept him safe in their office until I could arrive to collect him.”

Commenting on the case, the RSPCA warned that pink-toed tarantulas are difficult pets because they need specialist care and warm, humid living conditions.

Owners may not realise the commitment involved in looking after a pet, and complications can include the tarantulas possibly becoming aggressive, or growing very large.

Anyone looking to take on a tarantula as a pet should do a lot of research first to make sure that it is the right fit.

‘SUCH A KICK IN THE STOMACH’: FAMILIES BEREAVED IN THE FIRST LOCKDOWN REACT TO the downing street PARTY ‘It’s one rule for Boris and another for everyone else’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark families who lost relatives in the first Covid-19 lockdown have reacted with anger to the news of Boris Johnson going to a party in May 2020 - when they were not able to see their loved ones or mark their death properly.

Johnson is facing calls to step down after apologising last week for going to the party in the garden of 10 Downing Street, but claimed that it was technically within the rules.

Families in Southwark whose loved ones died around the same time, but who were not able to be close to them at the end or hold proper funerals, have called Johnson "disgusting" and said the news was "a kick in the stomach".

Bermondsey man Terry Coakley died tragically young, aged just 34, at the start of April 2020 in St Thomas' Hospital. His family were not able to be with him and hold his hand in his final moments.

In tears Terry's father David told the News: “All I wanted to do was give him a cuddle. All we had was a picture on the phone of Terry with tubes hanging out of him.”

Discussing Johnson's behaviour and his handling of the pandemic David added: “"If he had called a lockdown six weeks before my Terry might be with us now. I’m not saying would, I’m saying he might have been.”

With reference to the party at Downing Street, David said: “It’s disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. I call him the son of Donald Trump. He was born in America too, not a lot of people know that and he even looks like him.

He wants to be a dictator. It’s one rule for him and another for everyone else.

He bends the rules to suit him. Bend it like Beckham.”

The family were the only ones able to attend Terry's funeral, on May 11 (just nine days before the Downing Street Party), but 500 people lined the route to his funeral when the procession went past the Blue and Millwall representatives came out. There were two sides of the road lined with people as they approached the crematorium.

Around the same time as Terry died, Andy Shelley, 70, also passed away after falling ill with Covid-19. Living in Amina Way off St James’s Road in Bermondsey, Andy and his wife Nora had received their letters from the NHS telling them that because they suffered from certain conditions they were to self-isolate for twelve weeks.

Andy's daughter Michelle Shelley and her brothers were allowed to see their father for just one hour on the day he died but were all suited up for it. Their mother got to see him twice for an hour.

They were not there with him when he passed away.

Ruby Fuller (at an anti-Brexit march) party, Michelle said: "It is such a kick in the stomach. It makes me sick to think that while they were giving press conferences and giving out their condolences to the families that lost someone, it actually meant nothing.

"Imagine not being able to hug your mother or your siblings at my Dad's funeral. And we didn't because we were obeying the rules, but Boris and his mob can do whatever they please.

Heart-breaking."

Emma Jones' daughter Ruby Fuller, who went to North Dulwich Charter School, died of leukaemia aged just eighteen in May 2020, but the lockdown rules still meant that they were unable to have a proper funeral.

Herne Hill resident Emma said: "It was a heart-breaking situation but the fact there was a lockdown made a heart-breaking situation a lot worse."

Addressing the Downing Street party, she said: "That was the most frustrating thing, it was a really difficult situation, but there were no exceptions. To find out now that the people who set the rules weren’t following them - I haven’t

She added that she had "no respect" for Johnson and that that "we deserve better as a country".

"We deserve leaders who are going to lead by example. The fact he was trying to get out of it on a technicality... No, come on, you’ve basically been caught red-handed.

"Boris has apologised but the way he has couched that apology, it felt like he was trying to say I didn’t really do anything wrong. I don’t think it’s tenable to have a leader who has been found to be breaking the rules. How can anyone ever follow any instructions again?"

Ruby, a keen advocate of causes like the environment, remaining in the EU, refugee rights and animal rights, among others, "would be furious" herself over the Johnson party news, Emma said.

"She would be fuming. I saw a picture of some chap standing with a banner outside Downing Street saying 'this is

not a party'. That would be Ruby."

The family held three small socially distanced memorial events outside when restrictions allowed, a few months later.

At the time of Ruby's death, they put up flowers and cards in their front garden for people to sign, along with a banner with Ruby's motto: "Live kindly, live loudly."

Two Southwark Labour MPs have also called for Boris Johnson to resign after the Prime Minister’s Covid party admission.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said that “Johnson insults everyone who followed the rules. He then adds injury to insult by attempting to cover it up.”

Meanwhile Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes pointed out the inconsistency of Johnson’s comments about the Downing Street parties over recent months, adding: “Enough of the weasel

The Prime Minister faces pressure from both Labour in opposition and his own MPs. If Johnson does not quit, the mechanism that would force him out is if 54 out of 359 Tory MPs sent letters to the 1922 Committee, which organises the party’s leadership contests. Southwark set to get eight more bike docking stations Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents have complained about a Southwark Council decision to make it harder to park on the peninsula, despite few locals seeming to want the changes.

Out of the 382 responses to the council’s consultation on the decision to introduce a controlled parking zone in Rotherhithe and the Surrey Docks area, some 246 were against the plans as a whole or in part.

Many of the people objecting said that there was no problem with the current level of street parking available in the area.

The council said it wanted to reduce the

future congestion that is likely to come as a result of future developments, like British Land’s 3,000-home Canada Water Masterplan. Homes in that development are being marketed as largely without parking spaces, apart from for blue badge holders.

One resident asked in their response to the consultation why the new developments could not simply be built with enough parking for the people who move in.

“If the council is concerned that parking pressure in adjoining areas will become unmanageable with current arrangements as a result of the Canada Masterplan developments,” they added, “then this suggests that the proposals that have been approved have not taken a realistic view on how much parking per unit of new residential / commercial unit

is actually needed.”

The plans, which were approved in October last year, would bring in parking spaces and double yellow lines. Parking permits for residents cost £130 per year in the borough.

Rotherhithe resident Angus Walker told the News he was dismayed by the “heavy-handed” changes and wanted them reversed in line with the results of the consultation. “It feels arrogant, like the council are saying ‘we know what’s best for you’”.

Some people were in favour of the changes, with one supporter commenting: “Great to see more restrictions on free parking in the area. Car owners should pay their fair share to store their private property on public roads.”

Southwark Council was contacted for further comment.

We reported in October last year that Southwark was due to get more TfL bikes by April 2023, although the council could not confirm where they would be or how many new bikes the borough would get.

‘Catastrophic, harmful and savage’: Dulwich’s elderly say they suffer under Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme

By Joshua Askew news@southwarknews.co.uk Older residents in Dulwich have complained that the Low Traffic Neighbourhood Scheme (LTN), which was made permanent on Christmas Eve, has severely disrupted their lives.

They say road closures and restrictions are making visits to and from healthcare workers and loved ones more difficult, alongside the activities that help maintain their physical and mental health.

“Age means that we cannot move around as easily as when we were young”, said Joan Evans of Age Speaks, which represents more than 100 elderly and disabled Dulwich residents.

“Walking is often painful and slow, carrying more than small loads difficult [and] cycling (with some energetic exceptions) unthinkable.”

“Nobody thinks they are going to be old, but the reality is you will be like this one day,” she added.

In a press release, Southwark Council defended the LTN: “The changes will help to reduce pollution and traffic, improve safety, and increase walking, cycling and scootering."

"These are outcomes that the majority of those in Dulwich, and across Southwark, can support."

The impacts of the LTN are felt particularly in day-to-day activities and by the less well off in the area, as penalty charges of £65 can be applied if residents are caught driving in restricted zones.

“I have to shop in different outlets as I am on a budget,” said one 78-year-old pensioner from Dulwich. “As I shop for my 95-year-old aunt as well, shopping on foot or by bus is not an option.”

“I must use my car and these undemocratically imposed road barriers has inconvenienced this weekly chore greatly,” they added.

Residents are also concerned that the LTN is displacing traffic onto boundary roads, especially East Dulwich Grove, Dulwich Common and Croxted Road, worsening congestion and air quality.

Many of these streets are residential and have schools or health centres on them.

Southwark Council said the Dulwich

scheme had led to a twelve per cent decrease in motor traffic and a 60 per cent increase in cycling since the measures were first introduced in March 2020.

A lot of the anger felt by residents over the LTN stems from the way in which they believe it was imposed by the council, with many saying there was not a proper assessment of the impact it would have on residents’ lives or exploration of possible alternatives.

Protest group Dulwich Alliance said in a statement: “Southwark Council has decided to ignore the wishes of people in Dulwich by refusing to accept the outcome of its own public consultation, which showed that more than two-

Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for transport, parks and sport, said: “We have really listened to local people in making many changes to the schemes, to improve accessibility for people with disabilities and lower mobility.

We have introduced a wide range of exemptions and changes to assist our most vulnerable residents. Driving is an important liberty for many older residents, who wish to continue driving after 70.

“Of course walking and cycling aren’t always possible for some people and we do not claim we have got it all right, but we can’t make changes based on unspecified claims. We need residents to contact us with specific cases of where this has had a negative impact on someone we can look at how best to mitigate against that.

Locals said they were urging the council to create a better scheme, which addresses their complaints.

“While we are aware of the need to reduce pollution, we need alternatives that do not discriminate against car-dependent elderly and disabled residents, damage local businesses and displace traffic on to already congested roads,” says Joan Evans.

“What we want is a council that doesn't treat us like children.”

The bike programme in neighbouring Lambeth goes much further south, down to Brixton and Stockwell. North of the river, docking stations go as far west as Hammersmith and Fulham and as far east as Tower Hamlets.

Red Route fine rise

Transport for London (TfL) is boosting fines for breaking the rules on London’s red routes, with penalty charge notices increasing from £130 to £160 as last Monday January 17, writes Kit Heren...

TfL said it was bringing in the changes to discourage people from driving dangerously, adding that it had doled out nearly 30 per cent more fines in 2019 than in 2016.

Red routes make up five per cent of roads in London, but carry 30 per cent of the capital’s traffic. Some of Southwark's red routes include Jamaica Road, Old Kent Road and Peckham Road.

Sweeping changes to dock despite locals’ wildlife concerns

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents will be getting a distinctive new red wooden boardwalk across Canada Water dock by the Tube station, although with plants and trees having to be cut down, some people are worried about the impact on wildlife.

British Land’s boardwalk application was approved unanimously by Southwark Council’s planning committee on Tuesday night, January 18, along with a raft of other changes to Canada Water dock, as part of the developer’s grand plans for the area.

The boardwalk, which will be for pedestrians only, will run from the southern edge of the dock to Deal Porter Square. Cyclists will not be

allowed.

The company said it would take out existing plants and trees from around the dock “to create three zones of wetland habitats characterised by reedbeds, wet woodland and wet meadow and pond”.

Objectors to the plan called this “criminal”.

Recommending that the plans go ahead, Southwark’s planning officers said it was “regrettable” that two nesting seasons would be disrupted - but argued that the overall benefit to wildlife outweighed the harm this would cause.

British Land will also raise the dock’s water level and improve water quality with a new drainage system. Other changes include a pergola and a new ‘dipping pond’ that will be open to the public, with gate access for safety.

Tributes paid to beloved police veteran

Colleagues of a veteran of the Rotherhithe community policing team who was "like a dad" have paid tribute to him after he died tragically young on Boxing Day last year.

Police community support officer (PCSO) Albert Tedam died of cancer aged only 55, leaving behind a wife, two sons and two daughters. He had been with the Met police for nearly seventeen years, most of them in the Rotherhithe safer neighbourhood team (SNT).

"He was very hard-working, never late and hardly ever off sick," police constable Paul Green told the News this week. "Even when he was so ill, two weeks before his death, he was still coming in."

PCSO Tedam "had a way of talking to people.

He knew the Rotherhithe community so well, he was really approachable to everyone," PC Green added.

Another PCSO, who said he did not want to be named, said that when he moved to Rotherhithe from another part of the police force, PCSO Tedam showed him round the area and told him about all the local miscreants.

"He knew everyone - from the local drug dealers to the local cafe," the PCSO said. "We've lost that real local knowledge now and that can never be replaced." But PCSO Tedam didn't just have practical knowledge - he was also proud of his master's degree in criminology.

There were fourteen in the Rotherhithe SNT office, making them "very tight-knit". PCSO Tedam was "like the dad of the family".

came from Ghana, the two officers said, and was proud of his heritage and links to his home country. He was also a devout Christian and "lived by the Old Testament".

Before he joined the police, PCSO Tedam worked at the Royal Mail sorting office and at Heathrow looking at suspicious packages.

Despite his vast experience, he was "always humble and very chatty," the officers said. "He loved banter and he had a great sense of humour, PC Green added.

One of the topics he loved to talk about was politics. He was a long-term Labour voter but had a soft spot for former Conservative prime minister John Major, who he considered "very different from other Tory leaders".

His colleagues have launched a fundraiser in his memory. Search online for PCSO Albert Tedam to learn more and donate.

Police hunt after teenager raped by two men

Appeal for witnesses in Peckham as no arrests one week on

By Kit Heren and Joshua Askew kit@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly a week on from the shocking rape of a teenager in Peckham by two men, police are still calling for witnesses to come forward.

No arrests have been made, as police continue to investigate the “brutal” attack on an eighteen-year-old woman late at night on Thursday, January 13 near Peckham Rye station.

The teenager was walking down an alleyway off Elm Grove shortly after 10.20pm that night when two males approached her from behind and took her to neighbouring Holly Grove, where they raped her.

Police are still urging anyone who may have been in the Peckham Rye station area between 10pm on Thursday and 12.30am on Friday or who may have any information to come forward.

The two males were wearing dark clothing, gloves and face coverings but there is no other description.

Detective Superintendent Clair Kelland said: "The investigation into this incident is fast paced and ongoing and involves an extensive crime scene.”

Southwark Council also responded to the awful attack in a statement last Friday, January 14, saying they were supporting the police with their investigation.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, the council's

cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “We are shocked and appalled by such a horrendous incident. Our heart goes out to the young woman who suffered a truly brutal attack by two men while she was walking in public.

"It shows that the threat against women remains ever present. We refuse to accept that fear, intimidation, harassment and assault are regular occurrences in too many lives. As a community, we need to stand up to all forms of male violence against women and girls.”

Cllr Akoto later added that the council was reviewing its lighting and CCTV in the borough as part of its plan to combat violence against women and girls, with a view to adding to its coverage.

The exact circumstances of the attack remain unclear, but Cllr Akoto said that Southwark remained in general a safe place to live, despite the horrific incident. A senior police officer in the borough added that this kind of attack was rare.

Police and the council have developed schemes aimed at keeping women safe since the murder of Sarah Everard last year. The Met rolled out the ‘Ask for Angela’ safety initiative in August, where anyone feeling unsafe, vulnerable or threatened on a night out can discreetly ask for help from venue staff.

Staff at Tola, a bar on Peckham Road, said they were “disgusted and appalled” by the rape. The bar’s manager Diggy Nelson said that “we as leaders in the community nightlife need to take a stand and get behind change.”

Alongside discussions about wider cultural change, the investigation into this terrible incident continues.

MPs outraged over dire postal service across Southwark Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two Southwark MPs have demanded more transparency from Royal Mail after months of delays that have seen constituents miss out on Christmas cards, appointment letters - and even death certificates for loved ones.

Neil Coyle, of Bermondsey and Old Southwark, and Helen Hayes, who represents the Dulwich and West Norwood constituency, have had hundreds of complaints from Southwark residents about missing items.

The problem got particularly bad over Christmas and the New Year, with thousands of postal workers off sick in the first week of 2022, but has been a recurring issue from long before.

Neil Coyle, who lives in Walworth and represents the north Southwark SE16, SE17 postcode areas, as well as part of SE1, said the public were "very understandably annoyed with the level of service they've been getting" from Royal Mail. He said he had about 60 formal complaints from constituents about missing letters and parcels, as

well as many more on social media.

"It's not just about delayed Christmas cards, there have been businesses affected and appointments missed because of this," he said.

He himself has missed out on a dentist appointment for his young daughter, because the letter arrived after the date of the appointment.

Coyle said he understood the pressures that Omicron brought over Christmas and the pandemic more generally - but added that Royal Mail "just need to be honest" about the scale of the problem

and make better contingency plans.

Meanwhile Hayes said the problem was more structural in East Dulwich, after the SE22 sorting office on Sylvester Road closed in 2018. The building netted the Royal Mail £7 million and Hayes said she wanted at least some of that money to be reinvested in a new facility for East Dulwich. SE24 and SE19 have also been problem areas since the rise of the Omicron variant.

"Royal Mail have never acknowledged the seriousness of the problem," she said. Hayes, who has had hundreds

of complaints in recent weeks, has had constituents report lost death certificates, bank cards and bills - and even a woman who had to go to court after a letter she was supposed to get about a speed awareness course after a driving offence went missing in the post.

One of the key services that postal workers have been providing during the pandemic is delivering and collecting PCR tests. But even this has come under strain, leaving new arrivals to the country stranded indoors.

Hiva Azizia, who is living in Camberwell after flying in from Lithuania earlier this month, said she ordered a PCR test five days before she arrived in the country last Friday, January 14. But several days later, she has still not been sent the test, and has had no word from Royal Mail about where it could be.

Cllr Charlie Smith, a Labour councillor for the Goose Green ward in East Dulwich, said at least part of the problem was privatisation, which took place under Conservative governments.

"When the post office was in public hands, even though there might have been problems, they would have understood that they are running a public service, not a company for profit," he said.

Despite her criticism of the "entirely complacent" company, Hayes emphasised that she was not targeting the actual postal workers.

Kelly Webster, a collections driver for Royal Mail in Walworth, said she understood the frustration, but asked for people's patience. "It's just one of those obvious things - if you lose a certain amount of staff, people have got to understand that services will be affected."

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “Deliveries are operating as normal across most of the country. We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as COVID-related self-isolation, higher than usual levels of sickness absence, resourcing or other local factors.

"We are providing targeted support to the local offices affected by these issues and we apologise to customers for any inconvenience they may have experienced. Our postmen and women are continuing to work incredibly hard, as they have done throughout the pandemic, and we are thankful for all of their efforts and determination.”

Over Christmas, amid rising Omicron cases, many would-be revellers opted to stay at home, with pubs reporting thousands of booking cancellations.

While some pubs are doing well, not all have had a post-Christmas bounce.

Some are blaming Covid-related hesitancy while others say it’s typical for a January.

THE ANCIENT FORESTERS, 282 SOUTHWARK PARK ROAD

Normally chock-a-block on match day, one of the Den’s local boozer has contended with cancelled matches and cancelled bookings.

Sandra, leaseholder of the Ancient Foresters for the past sixteen-and-ahalf years said: “It’s been absolutely dead since before Christmas.

“A lot of people are ill and older people don’t want to come out.

“We open our doors but nobody is coming in, so what can we do?”

New confirmed cases of Covid-19 have dropped off again in Southwark over the past week, although the number of tests completed in the borough is also down.

Southwark Council has been given £485,000 by the government to get more people vaccinated against Covid-19 and have the booster jab.

"Due to these pharmaceutical defences and the likelihood that we have already reached the peak of the case numbers and hospitalisations, I'm cautiously optimistic that we'll be able to substantially reduce measures next week.”

£485,000 for vaccines

Some 2,573 people tested positive for Covid-19 from January 12-18, a fall of nearly 43 per cent, similar to the decrease recorded in much of London.

The borough now ranks around the middle of the 32 London boroughs for new Covid infections, after being one of the leaders in the run-up to Christmas.

But the number of tests done was also down by more than 45 per cent, suggesting that some cases may have been missed. This is a pattern that was repeated across south-east London and the rest of the capital: steep dropoffs in cases alongside a fall in test numbers.

At 78, the number of people going into Guy's and St Thomas' trust hospitals with Covid-19 was down about one per cent in the first week of January compared to the week before, the latest figures available.

About 207,000 in the borough had been double-jabbed as of the end of Saturday (January 15) and more than 138,000 had been boosted. The borough has about 340,000 people above the age of twelve.0 Some parts of Peckham, Camberwell, south Bermondsey, Walworth and Borough have low double-vaccination rates of between 60 and 70 per cent, and booster and third jab rates of between 30 and 40 per cent.

Southwark has been using 'community ambassadors' to help encourage people who may be reluctant to get vaccinated. The council said black and ethnic minority people have been less likely to get the jab.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said that the council would use the money to give more support to local community

organisations and small businesses helping with the vaccine effort, and do more targeted communication, doorknocking, pop-up events and other neighbourhood schemes.

Also on the cards are more recruitment and training people to explain the benefits of the vaccine, particularly to young people.

Cllr Akoto added: "We know there’s much more still to do. Our successful funding bid will allow us to reach even more residents in the short and longer term by scaling up our current programme, helping us to continually adapt to the ongoing impact of Covid-19...

“Underpinning all this work must be an understanding of the barriers that might prevent certain groups from taking up the vaccine. We know there’s a stark inequity in vaccine uptake across the borough, with residents from black and ethnic minority communities much less likely to come forward for the jab. Funding will allow us to extend our existing network of community researchers and ensure we are fully listening and responding to our residents’ concerns.”

Southwark was one of the London boroughs with the highest levels of Covid cases before Christmas, but has dropped off markedly over the past few weeks.

Some 28 London boroughs have been given grants of between £185,000 and £485,000 by the government to boost the vaccine rollout.

‘walworth needs a community pub’

Locals rage against advertising board as dangerous eye-sore

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Walworth community group is canvassing locals for what they would want out of a 'community pub' for their area.

Matthew Meynell of the Walworth community pup group said that he wanted to create a pub that would help bring local people from different walks of life together.

Noting that food poverty is an issue in Walworth, he said that alongside things that would bring in more traditional punters, affordable food could be a priority. Other options could be a wide range of non-alcoholic drinks, and possibly space for local community groups in the daytime.

But the character of the new pub would be led by the responses to the survey.

Starting up a new pub is likely to

be a long process. Once the survey results come back, the group will start looking for possible premises, and then fundraising by selling off shares in the pub, which would be likely to go for as little as £100.

Mr Meynell, who co-owns a pub in Wales, said it was difficult to give an exact fundraising target, but that if the organisation were to buy its own premises it would need to raise a sum in the hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Cllr Alice Macdonald of the Newington ward and a council cabinet member is helping with the campaign and added that it was important to people from all walks of life, with women's safety a top priority.

The survey comes after a bid to convert the ground floor of the 200-year-old Beehive pub into flats was rejected at a Southwark Council planning committee last week, after a campaign by the Walworth Society,

another local group, backed by ward councillors.

Nearly 250 people objected to the application on the council's planning website, with commenters pointing to the pub's rich history and civic importance to the local area.

Rejecting the application, the council said the conversion would mean the loss of a community asset, adding that the planned flats would be "poor quality" and that there were fire risk concerns.

The pub, which has been out of use for about two years, would be one possible venue for the community pub, Mr Meynell said - but far from the only option.

Other family members also rallied round to help out, including Lil's sister - who joked that she would have preferred to have had the stroke herself, because of all the work she had to do supporting Lil. Lil also had to move out of her home in Brixton and come to Camberwell, which was difficult at the time. She chose Camberwell in part because of its artistic reputation.

Her art is mainly installations of found objects and she said that her art "keeps me alive".

"Yes, I have two children, and I'm very glad to have a family but my art is my life." Lil's sister, who runs a music centre called Brixton Wings, has given her space in the centre to put on an exhibition called Stations.

Lil said she was grateful "but my work should be in a real art gallery because I'm an award-winning artist".

Lil, who grew up in Ireland, said some of her work was in Áras an Uachtaráin, the Irish president's house, and former president Mary Robinson opened one of her shows.

She is also a singer-songwriter and founded a choir for people who have

suffered strokes, or any other brain injury, as well as their carers.

“The stroke choir is called Out of the Blue because stroke comes out of the blue. Life goes on. Yes, you’ve had a stroke but you’re just changing direction.

Lil's comments came after stroke prevention day on January 14.

Camberwell artist issues stroke warning

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Camberwell artist who suffered a life-changing stroke has urged people to listen to their doctor when they are warned about their health.

Lil Sullivan, 65, who lives on Lilford Road, said she wishes she had taken more notice of her doctor when she tried to put her on medication for her high blood pressure. "I was told I was a borderline case. I'm a farmer's daughter - to me, borderline still means you've got room to work with," she said.

Sadly, she did not listen and in 2005 suffered a stroke that put her in King's College Hospital for seven months and left her with walking, speech and mental health problems that endure to this day.

When Lil came home from the hospital, her younger daughter t'lda had to become her main carer - aged just five. "It was difficult for her," Lil said.

Although it was tough for t'lda, the experience has left her with useful experience - she is now a psychology student at Oxford Brookes university,

BT have applied to build the street hub - an integrated phone, wifi hub and advert screen - outside Marks and Spencer on Walworth Road.

The plans are opposed by community organisation the Walworth Society.

Jeremy Leach, the group’s chair, said: “We were very concerned to see this application and yet another attempt to sneak extremely intrusive LCD advertising into the Walworth Road Conservation Area.

“The adverts are great for the profits of big companies and really bad for the places that get landed with them.”

The group argue that disabled and visually impaired pedestrians are most likely to be hindered by the sudden encroachment on space.

A BT spokesperson said: "The unit has the same footprint as the existing kiosk, therefore no additional pavement will be required."

As the hub provides free calls, there are also fears it could be used by drug users to contact their dealers.

In 2018, the IET reported that, over a 105-day period, drug dealers had organised 20,000 sales on five BT InLink phone kiosks in Tower Hamlets.

In their written objection to the plans, the group said: “In an area where meetings of Safer Neighbourhood teams are dominated by concerns over drug taking and drug dealing, the use of these devices to facilitate such activity is extremely concerning.”

“The object is a source of danger to pedestrians who will be uncertain as to who or what may be lurking on the other side of them especially after dark.”

He also expressed concern at their energy usage as an investigation by the Guardian newspaper found that similar-

sized advertising boards, although not BT’s specifically, can consume as much as 11,501kWh per year.

A BT spokesperson said: "Our Street Hub 2.0 units are powered 100 per cent by renewable energy."

If the hub were installed, it would mean removing two existing phone kiosks, with the group supporting the removal of one of them.

The council is expected to reach a decision by February 3.

In response a BT spokesperson said: “Over 400 existing Street Hubs are already delivering a wide range of economic, social and technology benefits to communities and local councils up and down the country – from connecting local residents, businesses and visitors to free ultrafast Wi-Fi, to ensuring that people can contact the emergency services or charity helplines in times of need.

“Our new Street Hubs introduce upgraded features such as the functionality to provide environment monitoring for local authorities, the ability to boost 4G/5G mobile coverage and free screen time to local authorities to help promote local community services. BT recently announced plans to roll out more than 200 Street Hub 2.0 units to new sites across the UK over the next year.”

heating woes: ‘It’s like we’re back in the ‘50s!’

news@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a Kennington housing estate were left shivering over Christmas after their heating repeatedly failed, forcing them to wash using kettles, pans and buckets.

Newington Estate’s heating stopped on Boxing Day, returned on December 31, before breaking again for ten days, a period when temperatures dropped to -2 degrees.

The heating has been back on since Wednesday 12 January but, having experienced these problems for years, residents fear it will break again.

Emel Ergun, 65, cares for her disabled sister, 58, who has lived on the estate for 40 years. She said: “I’m about to give her the first proper bath she’s had in three weeks.

“I’ve been heating pans of water on the gas stove, pouring it into buckets and washing her with a jug.”

Emel’s mother, who lived on the estate, passed away in March 2021 and, in the last year of her life, was kept warm using portable heaters.

Residents repeatedly alerted the council who assured them it was being fixed but, weeks later, their teeth were still chattering.

Renah Hall, 31, worries about her 58-year-old mum who suffers from

health problems and also lives on the estate. She said: “My mother has been complaining for months.

“It’s hard and stressful because when it’s cold it feels like you're outside, even when you're inside!

“It makes you think how cruel the world is.”

Emel said residents were due to have a meeting about the issues on December 15, in the Tenant’s Hall. Due to covid, it was conducted through Zoom instead.

She worries that Zoom meetings exclude people who don’t have computer access, those most likely to be elderly or vulnerable.

Leaseholder Catriona Agraniou, a 44-year-old mother-of-one said: “It's every winter, not just a one-off.

“Last year we paid over £1,300 on heating and hot water charges. Yet the service gets worse every year.

“It’s like we’re back in the 1950s boiling saucepans and using a bucket!”

Although the bulk of residents say their heating has returned, some say they are still without hot water.

The News have previously reported on the council plans to install renewable heat pumps on the Newington estate as alternative to the much troubled district heating system, which has caused problems across the borough.

Southwark Council has been approached for comment.

Council apologises for delays in fixing leak that caused damp

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has apologised after leaving a vulnerable Peckham man waiting for two and a half months to fix a problem causing damp and mould in his home.

The problem, which was caused by a broken cold water storage unit, affected several properties in Caroline Gardens, a Grade-II listed nineteenthcentury almshouse development just south of the Old Kent Road.

Donald Eldred has lived in an almshouse on his own since March this year, after finding himself homeless at the start of the pandemic.

Mr Eldred, who grew up in Lambeth and has lived in south London for most of his life, said he had largely been very happy with his home until he noticed a pipe dripping from the attic down his bedroom wall and onto a flat roof overlooking the garden.

Emails show that he told his housing officer about the problem on November 1. When he got in touch with the News early last week, the only council employees that had been to his house had been the housing officer and a plasterer - and no plumber - so the problem had continued.

Mr Eldred, who suffers from diabetes

as well as depression, said he can no longer sleep in the bedroom, where a large patch of damp has spread across the wall and discoloured the light blue paint, and now has to spend the night on the sofa in his living room downstairs.

Council officers eventually fixed the original problem late last week but Mr Eldred said that another pipe burst in his attic, causing a second leak. Southwark fixed this on Monday, January 17.

Mr Eldred said that he was baffled by the delay to the repair work, given that it was the council's own property that was being affected.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “There have been some issues affecting several properties in Caroline Gardens, our engineers have worked to fix this, and the cold water storage unit was renewed last week which has resolved the problem. We have supplied dehumidifiers to dry out any remaining damp.

"However, we could have dealt with this issue more quickly and our communication on getting the matter resolved was not perfect. I am sorry for any delay this caused to residents and we will ensure our process is better next time.”

Families were invited to take part in the national children’s hospital survey by the Care Quality Commission from November 2020 to January 2021.

Parents rated Evelina London as significantly better than the national average in five key areas including parents feeling involved in their child’s care, staff playing with patients who are in hospital, and facilities for parents during overnight stays. There was also positive feedback for staff keeping parents informed of their child’s care while in hospital, and being able to ask staff questions about their child’s treatment.

For overall score, Evelina London ranked the third highest nationally amongst similar Trusts, and the Royal Brompton was amongst the top three in London.

rescue with tower run RNLI lifeguards are inviting people to join them on a tower run to raise money for a state-of-theart lifeboat station near Waterloo Bridge, writes Herbie Russell...

The gruelling 56 floor, 1,120 step ascent will be at the skyscraper on 22 Bishopsgate, the City, Saturday February 19.

Kevin Maynard, Tower station manager, said: "Our crews are always racing to save lives on the Thames.

“It would give us a tremendous boost to know supporters are also stepping up to this extraordinary challenge to help us continue.”

The skyscraper stands on the site of the London Tavern, where the RNLI was founded on March 4 1824.

That day, 30 men pledged “constant readiness to risk their own lives for the preservation of those they have never known or seen.”

Among the signatories were the Archbishop of Canterbury, as well as aristocrats, clerics, politicians and

Kevin Maynard added: “It seems really fitting that this event is taking place where the RNLI first started."

Since opening on the Thames in 2002, the station’s lifeboats have launched over 9,000 times and saved more than 350 lives.

But as the station approaches its 20th birthday, it has fallen beyond repair meaning a new station is desperately needed.

Of the RNLI’s 238 stations, the Tower Lifeboat Station is the busiest, with a crew readied around the clock.

Those who step up will be treated to stunning views across London during their run, as well as a special celebratory reception to thank them for their efforts.

The RNLI receives 92 per cent of its income from donations and, as a charity independent of the government, receives no public funding.

eRedbook, launched by Evelina London Children’s Hospital, Westminster Bridge Road gives families easy, secure online access to their newborn’s medical information.

The free-to-use app enables access to their full health history, as well as vaccine records. Extra features include screening reminders, growth trackers and tailored advice as the child develops.

Monica Sherry, head of nursing for children’s community services said: “We’re delighted to have started rolling out eRedbook to families across Lambeth and Southwark.

“This app can be accessed on the go,

and families can add photos, notes and questions for their next health visitor appointments.”

Traditionally, parents and health services record newborns’ wellbeing in physical, paper ‘red books’ until the age of five. While these are still available, the app is a digital alternative.

Parents can choose to securely share the information and online advice with family members, which is tailored based on the child’s age and location.

Health professionals will encourage pregnant women, mums and their partners to sign up as they use hospital services across Evelina London, and Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Proceedings on Sunday, January 9 began with the 11am eucharist, after which processions left Southwark Cathedral and the Church of Saint Magnus the Martyr simultaneously.

The processions, led by Bishop of Croydon, Reverend Jonathan Clark and Archbishop Josiah Idowu-Fearon respectively, convened on London Bridge. Reverend Jonathan Clark said: “By praying for the people who work on

Once on the bridge, as the bells of St Magnus and Southwark Cathedral rang, bible passages were read, and prayers offered to bridge and river users.

Finally, a wooden cross was thrown into the river by the two bishops, representing God’s blessing on the Thames.

Traditionally, the highest-ranking cleric throws the cross but, this time, with two bishops present, the two clergymen shared the honours.

The Southwark Cathedral website highlights that the Medieval bridge is not

just a roadway, but a spiritual causeway where people have worshipped for centuries.

The ceremony only began in the early 2000s, but nods to the ancient Orthodox ceremony of throwing a cross into the waters on the Sunday after Epiphany.

Nowadays, the ritual has special poignancy due to the London Bridge terrorist attacks of 2017 and 2019 which saw fourteen people killed.

On Sunday January 23 at 6pm, Compline and Benediction, a night-time prayer, will take place in a dimly lit nave, illuminated by candlelight, at Southwark Cathedral.

Privatisation ruined Royal Mail READERS’ VIEWS E ight years ago, the Tory Lib-Dem coalition government privatised Royal Mail, dismissing extensive evidence that this would result in worse services for Royal Mail customers.

The privatisation of Royal Mail was a disaster for staff and customers alike from the very start, and things have continued to deteriorate.

In 2018 Royal Mail announced the planned closure of its delivery offices in East Dulwich and West Norwood.

This would have meant West Norwood residents having to travel to Penge and East Dulwich residents to Peckham to collect undelivered parcels, oversized letters or Recorded Delivery post.

Local Labour councillors worked with me to lead the campaign on behalf of local residents and businesses against these ill-considered and damaging plans.

Although we were successful in forcing Royal Mail to backdown in West Norwood, they pressed ahead with the plans for East Dulwich and closed the Silvester Road sorting office shortly before Christmas in 2018.

The East Dulwich sorting office was sold for £7m as part of a deeply damaging asset stripping agenda at Royal Mail which puts profit before the needs of residents and businesses.

At the time I led a debate in Parliament regarding the proposed changes. I raised the specific concerns of local residents and it was encouraging to see MPs from across the country speaking

Together with local Labour councillors I warned that the Peckham delivery office was too small for the volume of post for both the East Dulwich and Peckham areas and that the increasing volume of parcels would only make this worse over time.

We also warned that Peckham was too far away from the southern end of East Dulwich.

Covid-19 has undoubtedly brought challenges for Royal Mail, and I pay tribute to our hard-working posties, who have continued to work hard throughout the pandemic. But it is clear that shutting down delivery offices and flogging them to the highest bidder has left Royal Mail with no resilience and

ecember was, for the most part, mild and wet (in the south) with a few days of freezing conditions. January started unseasonably mild but temperatures began dropping also bringing much colder nights.

It should be possible to plant trees or shrubs during January, but this cannot be done during freezing or very wet weather, so get them into the ground as soon as conditions become favourable.

Don’t forget the birds – even if the weather remains mild they often struggle to find enough food at this time. Ensure feeders are washed regularly and scrub bird tables (using hot soapy water and rinse thoroughly). Clean out baths and water containers. If this is not done regularly birds can pick up fatal diseases from the detritus and green slime which builds up. Hang fat balls in trees and shrubs (away from predators); keep feeders topped up with a good quality seed mix - this will help the sparrows, blue-tits and robins through winter especially during extreme weather.

As the weather has been largely mild - so far - some salad crops such as lettuce, winter land cress, purslane, and corn salad are still growing, cover with fleece when temperatures fall and there is a chance of night-time frosts.

During milder weather prune climbing roses - cut away diseased or damaged growth, tying in new shoots to their

trellis support. Prune older flowered side shoots back by about two thirds of their length. Remove the fallen leaves around the base of rose bushes which suffered disease attack such as black spot or rust last summer; dispose off-site to reduce the chance of reintroducing infection next year.

Winter flowering plants provide a welcome splash of colour during the grey and overcast winter days; Mahonia, a tall shrub with larger spikey leaves is covered in pale yellow perfumed flowers, later in the season it produces blue-black berries. Winter Jasmine is a non-descript shrub but its bare arching stems are usually smothered in flowers from December onwards.

One of my favourite tree/shrubs starts flowering in January (sometimes December) – the stunning Witch hazel; the spidery blooms are perfumed and have a vibrant colour range from pale yellow – to gold and orange (depending on the variety). The Witch hazel is a must for all gardens – they are small with a neat and compact habit, providing year round interest; flowers during winter months, beautiful shaped leaves follow in spring which turn butter yellow in autumn, and sometimes the Witch hazel produces curiously shaped seed pods. My plant of the month!

And if you are quick - there is still time to plant tulip bulbs either in the ground or in pots and window boxes that should flower late spring.

This Christmas, Royal Mail also failed to employ sufficient additional temporary staff to cover the busiest time of year, putting even more pressure on our hard-working posties and resulting in disappointment and distress for many people eagerly awaiting cards and gifts from loved ones.

In recent weeks, we have seen problems not only with postal delivery in East Dulwich, but also across many other parts of my constituency, including Herne Hill, Crystal Palace and Sydenham Hill.

Together with your local Labour councillors I’m demanding that the government take action to make sure that Royal Mail is delivering the services that they are obliged to do.

Britain will always need community spirited. And selfless people like Vimal. We need to sign and share the petition to keep him from being exiled as widely as possible.

We need a functioning postal service

A

couple of years ago, you could be forgiven for thinking the post was going the way of the dinosaur. They’re nice to get, but who regularly sits down to write a letter any more? And yet the incredible dysfunction of Royal Mail’s postal service in recent months reveals how much we really need it.

The company itself, which was fully privatised in 2015, says that its service is largely fine. That appears to be far from true in Southwark, where hundreds of people have complained about Christmas cards coming in mid-January, NHS appointment letters arriving too late, business deliveries being delayed, and more.

It is true that thousands of staff members were off work for various reasons in the first week of January, after the Omicron wave of Covid-19 swept the country over Christmas - that is very unfortunate timing in a very busy period for postal workers.

But it is not as if the service was doing particularly well in Southwark before Omicron either.

One Southwark resident sent an important letter with a first-class stamp on a Monday morning in November last year, expecting it to be delivered to the recipient, also in south London, the next day. It didn’t get there until Saturday.

A relatively minor inconvenience and embarrassment perhaps. But it also hints at a wider problem that existed before the slew of staff absences that took place before Christmas.

Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes, both interviewed and a columnist in this week’s edition, has been on Royal Mail’s case for a long time. The closure in 2018 of the former East Dulwich sorting office on Sylvester Road, has caused “a lack of resilience” in the local system, she argues - so minor issues become major problems quite easily.

What Hayes, Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle, this paper and the rest of the borough want to know is - when will our postal service be fixed? We’re not blaming postal workers, who have done a heroic job under difficult circumstances.

But, as we have realised as the problem has become more and more obvious, our society needs a functional postal service in order to run properly, and at the moment we just don’t have one.

Life after GCSEs - on to sixth form and college It’s now time to make some real decisions about your future - once you have taken your GCSEs you officially will be an adult, writes Kevin Quinn...

Mum and dad will no longer be responsible for your education, nor will the government; and believe it or not, neither will your teachers.

It will be entirely up to you to decide which path you take - and while everyone including the government is heavily focused on apprenticeships, there will be many of you who will want to follow the traditional academic route. Of course the results you get at secondary school will to a large extent determine what you do in further education. But now is the time to look at what sixth forms and further education institutes are offering.

Unlike secondary school admissions you have the freedom to go where you like - it does not have to be local - but bear in mind journey times. You don’t want to be exhausted before you arrive at college!

Being in the final year of your GCSEs, you will have a fair idea of the results you are likely to achieve and make sure that when you call or visit a sixth

form or college you find out the exact qualifications you need to get on the courses that you like the look of.

The truth is, if you are really passionate about a course but feel that you might not get the grades, it would be worth thinking about re-sitting.

After spending the whole of your life in school you might think that re-sitting

any GCSE would be completely out of the question. However, at your age, making sure that you do something that you feel passionate about and enjoy is absolutely vital. Countless people have had to work that bit harder and give something a go twice before they succeed. The experience at sixth form or college will be so different to that at

school that you should find the change enough to warrant the extra effort and time it takes to re-sit an examine or start a new one to get on to the course you are ultimately after.

The relationship with most of your teachers will be very different, as they will treat you more like an adult. After all you don’t have to be there - it is your

choice.

This means that lessons are normally more relaxed and you usually spend more time with smaller groups than you would do at secondary school.

While there is little doubt that A-levels are much harder than GCSEs, the fact that you have fewer subjects and are studying your favourite or best subjects means you will find the selfmotivation to get to grips with it.

The work will be much more in depth, but probably more interesting.

Essay subjects at A-level are much more about analysis and evaluation than just pure facts. This means that you can no longer get away with having a basic knowledge of a subject and then blagging the exam or just learning reams of facts without actually understanding them.

On the plus side you definitely get more freedom, including free periods (usually eleven or so hours a week), which allows you to plan when and how you work.

As well as the courses, check out the facilities at the sixth forms and colleges you are interested in, as they can help make your whole working environment a better one.

Clowns and jokers coming to the Southbank People will know comedian Matt Forde from his turns on TV documentaries, panel and comedy shows, Sky News, and as host of Absolute Radio’s Rock ’n’ Roll Football, writes Michael Holland...

Those with their fingers pressed more firmly on the pulse will know he has written for Jon Richardson and Russell Howard, plus will have seen his live stand-up act, which he will be taking on tour very soon.

His career has pretty much stayed close to his two loves: politics and football. He says it was his mum, a former nun, who sparked off his interest in politics and remembers his Labour-supporting home during important events like Thatcher leaving No. 10 and the ’92 election: “It all seemed very unfair, but also like an amazing world where you could change things for the better.” Matt Forde was nine.

At fifteen Matt became a member of the Labour Party but left when Corbyn was made leader. He explains: “My values didn’t change; I believe that if Labour was still moderate it could win elections and instigate huge social change, but Corbyn was a stretch too far for me.”

His early comedy influences were Steve Coogan and Rory Bremner (‘Probably the greatest impressionist that’s ever lived who also did biting political comedy’). But it was during school talent shows that the young Forde first realised that being funny was good: “I used to imitate the teachers and some football commentators, which led to me going to watch stand-up… I then thought ‘If I’m doing it on stage in school I might as well do it on stage in comedy

clubs.’… I then did my first gig when I was sixteen and never looked back.” He laughs as he remembers making that debut: “I basically survived it but I think I was sh*t!”

Matt had no fear of getting up on stage so worked the clubs from a young age, filling in with jobs in pubs, call centres and in politics while making a name for himself as he learnt his craft. All the hard graft led to him writing for other comedians and for TV and radio. Now, even though Matt’s love affair with the Labour Party has cooled somewhat, his comedy is entirely political.

He says, “My show is an hour and a half of satire.”

It was at this point in the interview that the astute comedian uncannily identified that I came from SE London: “I’m guessing with your accent that you’re Millwall.”

I was a little discombobulated but was able to talk about football for a while until I regained my equilibrium and carry on with the interview proper.

The new tour - Clowns To The Left Of Me, Jokers To The Right - begins on February 8th. “There are wallies everywhere and half of them are running the country. The other half are trying to, so I will satirise the right, left and centre,” claims this amiable and very agreeable man.

Matt will play 43 dates nationwide, including several London shows at the Southbank Centre, Bloomsbury Theatre, and Soho Theatre.

Ladies challenging gender divisions (sort of) Jane Austen’s iconic novel continues its appeal in Isobel McArthur’s rewriting of the classic, introducing her unforgettable and hugely entertaining, karaoke style production of Pride and Prejudice (Sort Of), writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Changing perspective entirely, McArthur writes the play from the viewpoint of socially overlooked positions, resulting in five scullery maids taking the stage by storm.

Discarding low status positions, the maids, played by an impressive allfemale cast take on the roles of the five Bennett sisters and each male character, leaving them decked in ball gowns, brocaded jackets and

Doc Martins, the play continually questions divisions.

Restricted by gender, Austen’s girls were prepped for marriage to secure a future, McArthur’s play revels in exposing this absurdity through the familiar clucking-hen mother Mrs. Bennet, played by McArthur herself, continuing her shameless manipulation, ensuring her daughters wed wealthy partners, but wearily ditching social etiquette with her comical swearing.

Playfully hilarious scenes ensue as Elizabeth Bennet (Tori Burgess) mocks Mr. Darcy’s(Isobel McArthur) historically admired handsome, strong, silent persona. Exasperated by his haughtiness, she bellows, “Are you ever going to talk? Do you

actually speak, Mr. Darcy?” Characters consistently prod us to look outside for alternatives to conventional behaviours.

Pride and Prejudice’s preoccupation with women of merit approved by their accomplishments is mercilessly sent-up in frenetic scenes. The shambolically dressed Bennett sisters play trumpet, piano, tambourine and mockingly sing a karaoke version of ‘You’re So Vain’ to Darcy.

Removal of the fourth wall allows audiences to connect with characters, appreciating why the genders act as they do but revealing it through riotous fun: Jane riding a life-sized horse on stage, Darcy denying us Colin Firth’s iconic wet-shirt scene, Charlotte(Hannah Jarrett-Scott)

playing a lesbian love interest that Elizabeth remains ignorant of; it is all designed to challenge the notion of norm.

Conveying a Georgian environment through a sweeping staircase and opulent chandelier, creates a stage within a stage effect, perfect for the social elite to strut and peacock upon and the actors to expose their act.

Plucky, hilarious and hugely entertaining production.

unearthed: archaeology highlights in southwark 2021

The Hunter God

THE RETURN OF THE HUNTER GOD

One of Southwark’s most treasured finds, a 2000-year-old limestone carving, is back in its spiritual home.

Visitors can now see the hunter god carving at the Southwark Heritage Centre in Walworth, which opened its doors to visitors in the summer of 2021.

The Roman-era carving, dating back to 150 to 250AD, was originally found during excavations of a well in Southwark Cathedral in 1977. It depicts a hunter god as well as various other religious symbols such as the cap of Mithras, arrows of Apollo and stag of Diana.

As well as featuring a library, the Southwark Heritage Centre is the new home of the Cuming Collection, a set of historical artifacts which was almost destroyed in a 2013 fire at Walworth Town Hall. Jessie Goodison Burgess, Heritage Officer at the centre said: "It's lovely to see how many people are coming in now that all the objects are back on display.

"The Cuming Collection was an important part of the local community so the fact that people still remember it is heartwarming."

A 2000-year-old roman ‘Motel’

A 2000-YEAR-OLD ROMAN ‘MOTEL’

Near Borough High Street, the Museum of London Archaeology team (MOLA) has been excavating a large, four-room Roman building constructed around AD72, 25 years after Londinium was founded.

The northern part of the building was first revealed in the 1980s and back then archaeologists thought it might be a Mansio - a hotel for traveling Roman soldiers and dignitaries.

There seems to have been an internal courtyard, colourful painted interior walls and a mosaic floor, all of which would have been encircled by a lush garden. The ornate nature of the structure indeed suggests that this once homed the elite figures of imperial Rome.

ALFRED THE GREAT’S MEDIEVAL STATUE IS PART ROMAN

Alfred the Great’s statue in Trinity Church Square, Borough, a venerable example of Medieval craftsmanship, was long-believed to be the capital’s oldest statue. It turns out that it’s even older than first thought - about 1600 years older!

In 2021, while undertaking conservation work, stonemasons found out the lower half is made from Bath stone, a material preferred by Roman sculptors. Academics soon concluded that the statue’s legs were carved from a colossal ancient sculpture dedicated to the goddess Minerva, dating back to the 2nd century.

Alfred's body is made of Coade Stone, a mix of clay, silicates, glass and terracotta, which was valued in Medieval times because of its suitability for fine detailing and ornamentation.

Fusing this onto the Bath stone would have been an incredibly delicate and complex process.

A CHI-RHO GRAFFITO SHARD

This year, a fascinating shard of Roman pottery, first found in Southwark, received academic recognition after it featured in the academic journal Britannia.

Historians concluded in 2021 that it provides an invaluable indicator as to the prevalence of Christianity in Roman Britain. The piece was first uncovered

by Pre-Construct archaeology during their excavations at Brandon House, Southwark.

It is thought to be the shard of a moratorium, a bowel-like vessel used for grinding up foodstuffs. But what makes it particularly special is its chirho inscription. One of the oldest known Christian symbols, the chi-rho is formed by writing a capital X over a capital P. These are the first two letters of the Greek word Christos and, together, mean ‘the anointed one’. It is very rare to find such inscriptions on pottery, making this a remarkable find.

The centre launched on May 19 2021 and is open 10am-6pm MondayFriday, 10am-5pm on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

On 14 February 2019, planning application (Council reference 19/0510/FUL) (‘the Application’) was submitted to the London Borough of Richmond by Avanton Richmond Developments Ltd (‘the Applicant’). On 29 July 2019, the Mayor of London issued a direction under Article 7 of the Town and Country Planning (Mayor of London) Order 2008 that the Mayor will act as the Local Planning Authority (City Hall, Kamal Chunchie Way, London, E16 1ZE) for the purposes of determining the Application (GLA reference GLA/4795). Subsequent to that direction, the Applicant submitted revisions to the Application to the Mayor on 22 November 2019 which were consulted upon in December 2019 and January 2020. Following that consultation, on 31 July 2020 the applicant made further revisions to the application, which were consulted on in August 2020. A Representation Hearing was then held on 1 October 2020 where the Mayor considered the application and resolved to grant planning permission subject to the completion of a S106 agreement. On 17 November 2021 the applicant submitted further revisions to the Application. These revisions include the following: • Minor realignment of the application red line boundary to reflect the site ownership as shown on the revised application drawings. This results in a small decrease in the overall site area (768.7sqm) and the relocation of the proposed car club spaces and refuse holding area.

• Amendments to the affordable housing tenure split to provide an increase in London Affordable Rent (LAR) units within the affordable housing offer for the Application following the adoption of the London Plan 2021. This results in 18 additional LAR units (43 habitable rooms) with a corresponding decrease in intermediate affordable housing (London Living Rent). A revised Area and Accommodation schedule has been provided.

• The submission of a Revised Application Form, CIL form, Certificates, Design and Access Architectural Addendum, Landscaping Addendum, Construction Environmental Management Plan, Planning Statement, Digital Connectivity Note and Revised Waste Management Strategy Addendum to reflect the changes to the application site boundary and the requirements of the London Plan 2021.

• An updated Transport Assessment and Travel Plan to reflect changes to the local bus network since the Mayor considered the Application at the Representation Hearing on 1 October 2020 and changes to the application site boundary.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET couldn’t recover from a first-half collapse as they were beaten 3-1 by Dorking Wanderers at Champion Hill on Tuesday night.

In front of an attendance of 1,717, Alfie Rutherford scored a hat-trick before the break and though Reise Allassani’s strike an hour in gave Gavin Rose’s side hope it proved only to be a consolation.

After Ed Harris headed over for the visitors the Hamlet fashioned their first

chance when Jordan Green played a onetwo with Jazzi Barnum-Bobb but could only shoot straight at former Middlesex cricketer Dan Lincoln in the Wanderers goal.

Three minutes later Chike Kandi tested Lincoln but that was about as good as it got for Dulwich in the opening 45 minutes.

The hosts went behind in the eleventh minute when a long throw-in was flicked on by Harris for Rutherford to head past Charlie Grainger.

Wanderers almost doubled their lead within five minutes when Bobby-Joe

Taylor crossed for Jason Prior to beat Grainger but Tyrone Sterling cleared the ball off the line.

The away side wanted a penalty after they won possession high up the pitch and Jack Holland knocked Niall McManus off the ball, before the latter crossed for Jimmy Muitt and Grainger saved at fullstretch Dorking didn’t let up and went 2-0 up in the 24th minute when Prior crossed from the right and Rutherford scored his second.

Fish dominate but denied a win

The Rotherhithe side almost took the lead against a team that hadn’t conceded in five games but Isaac Thompson’s effort hit the crossbar.

Temi Oladejo then tried with another shot from long range but was just offtarget.

Pedro de Brito Moco and Julio Da Mata were next to threaten for the confident visitors before Thompson was again denied.

Fisher then wondered how they weren’t in front when Michael Sarpong’s header was cleared off the line.

Thompson had one last chance but couldn’t keep his attempt down.

Fish boss Ajay Ashanike said: “Another clean sheet and point on the

board. Thank you to all the fans today pushing the boys all the way.”

Fisher are fourteenth in the SCEFL Premier Division table after 22 games.

CEO Billy Sweeney, president Jeff Blackett and chairman Tom Ilube visited the Cage in Burgess Park to see how rugby in inner-London can flourish in a suitable environment.

The Cage was crammed with players and families as the Tigers welcomed teams from King’s College, Bromley, Ayelsford and Sidcup for a morning of competitive age-grade rugby.

A club spokesperson said: “It was a perfect way of demonstrating how rugby is thriving in Southwark but also of showcasing the need for extra space to enable the club to reach its potential for both children and adults.”

Coaches, volunteers, players and parents were all able to talk with the senior RFU representatives about the

club and rugby in general, enabling them to develop a greater understanding of the hurdles involved in developing rugby in urban areas as well as the huge potential on offer.

Of particular interest was the sports redevelopment at Burgess Park which will create a floodlit rugby-ready astro pitch which has the potential to become a hub for all ages and grades of rugby participation.

Allassani’s neat work on the edge of the box found Green but Jordan Cheadle saw off the danger.

The Hamlet were their own worst enemy at times and almost handed their opponents a third when they lost possession giving Dorking a three-onone, but Sterling got back to prevent Rutherford from testing Grainger.

But Rutherford wasn’t denied for long.

In the fourth minute of injury-time he completed his hat-trick after Darren Oldaker’s long diagonal pass released Muitt and Rutherford fired home the cross.

Rose switched to 4-4-2 at the break as he sent on Mills for Higgs with Quade Taylor going into midfield.

Rutherford almost turned provider when he split the Hamlet defence with a pass but Wes Fogden’s shot was blocked.

Rutherford thundered the follow-up attempt off the crossbar and then Taylor shot wide.

Just before the hour, Gio McGregor curled a free-kick narrowly past the far top corner before Dulwich finally gave their fans something to cheer as Allassani forced the ball home following a corner.

Dulwich, though, couldn’t create any clear-cut chances in the last half an hour.

Green picked out Mills for a header but Lincoln saved comfortably.

Dulwich are seventh in the National League South table as Dorking moved four points clear at the top.

The Hamlet host Concord Rangers this Saturday. Kick-off at Champion Hill is 3pm.

Meanwhile, Ibra Sekajja has returned to Dulwich for a third spell.

Sekajja scored on his debut for Crystal Palace against Hull City in 2011 before going on loan to Kettering Town, Bromley, MK Dons and Barnet. He joined Scottish Premiership side Inverness Caledonian Thistle in October 2014.

A move to Livingston followed before spells at Braintree and Hemel Hempstead.

Sekajja signed for Dulwich in October 2016 and scored sixteen goals in 50 appearances that season, including a first-half hat-trick against Enfield Town in the Isthmian League Premier Division play-off semi-final.

He left for Bognor Regis that summer and then played for Havant & Waterlooville, Gosport Borough and Maidenhead United before re-signing for Dulwich in January 2021.

Sekajja had been training with Dulwich recently before he officially joined. He made his first appearance this season against Dorking.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD’S HISTORY-making FA Vase run continued with a hard fought 2-1 victory over Step 5 Raynes Park Vale last weekend.

Stansfeld went into the game with their confidence high after good results against the top two sides in their division. On a heavy pitch and playing up a demanding slope, Stansfeld were forced to defend as their opponents made the early running without creating any clear chances.

Stansfeld got more into the game and had several half-chances from a succession of corners.

In the 29th minute, Stansfeld broke the deadlock. A cross from Ted Bailey on the right was not dealt with by the home defence and in a goalmouth scramble the ball broke to Ollie Milton who slotted home in style.

Raynes Park upped their game and dominated the rest of the half but couldn’t find any gaps in a Stansfeld defence that was well-marshalled by their captain Casey Kilillea.

Just before the break, Stansfeld goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell was injured in a 50/50 challenge but after prolonged treatment he was able to see out the half though he did not look comfortable.

Stansfeld’s worst fears were confirmed at half-time when after more treatment Cottrell couldn’t return for the second half. That meant substitute striker Jack Carthy had to go in goal.

Within minutes, Carthy was called into action when a fierce drive slipped through his grasp and Brad Sweeney knocked the ball home from close range for the equaliser.

Although Raynes Park continued to dominate, they couldn’t find any more openings with the Stansfeld rear-guard protecting the rookie stopper.

Meanwhile Stansfeld were beginning to look dangerous on the counterattack and both Ross Morley and Macey Malyon went close with long-range efforts.

Man of the match Greg Summersby stops an attack In the 78th minute, Stansfeld went back in front. It was a slick move down the right and when Milton delivered a cross from the by-line Malyon found the back of the net with a diving header.

Raynes Park pushed everything forward in search of an equaliser but couldn’t test Carthy again as the Stansfeld defence kept out the hosts.

Stansfeld will travel away to Southall of the Combined Counties League Premier Division North in the fifth round on February 12.

Man of the match: Greg Summersby Stansfeld Reserves came away from the Menace Arena disappointed with a 2-2 draw against Peckham Town. Red Jenkins scored both the goals.

Surrey build for future as they boost academy

sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY COUNTY Cricket Club aim to “forge as many professional cricketers” as possible after announcing eight players who have joined the boy’s academy in 2022.

Raguvaran Aravinthan, Sheridon Gumbs, Tom Humphreys, Tim Lloyd, Yousef Majid, Oliver Pascall, Krish Patel and Ben Townsend are the inductees for this coming year.

All eight players have been part of the club’s talent pathways programme for several years,

featuring in County Cup matches at a number of age groups and joining overseas tours as well as training regularly with the county coaches.

The Surrey Academy is the final stage of the pathways development programme, with players selected based on their perceived potential to play the game professionally in the future.

Sixteen of the current men’s squad were all part of the Surrey pathway during their junior careers, with rookies Nathan Barnwell and Tom Lawes the latest to progress to professional contracts in October 2021.

As well as high-quality experienced coaches including former professional cricketers such as Chris Taylor and Matt Spriegel, the Academy also includes strength and conditioning work, physiotherapy and sports science, and sport psychology provision.

An extensive match programme including age-group and 2nd XI cricket will be devised for each player to aid their progress.

Head of Talent Pathways Taylor said: “We’re delighted to announce the eight players that have progressed to the Surrey Academy for 2022. All eight players have been

part of our pathway programme for a number of years but this is a crucial stage in their development.

“This opportunity will provide them with everything they need to be the best cricketers they can be and as with every year, our goal is to forge as many professional cricketers as we can from this group.”

Meanwhile, Surrey’s Alice Capsey and Nat Sciver were two of the standout players as England played England A in Canberra ahead of the start of the Women’s Ashes this week.

In a warm-up game reduced to 35 overs a side last Saturday, England’s

senior team posted 193-6 against England A, with Sciver top-scoring with 71 from 71 deliveries.

England A put together a decent chase, with Georgia Elwiss (33) and Capsey (44) putting on 73 for the fifth wicket but they were eventually dismissed for 183 in the final over.

England begin their Ashes campaign against trophy-holders Australia with the first T20 international in Adelaide on Thursday. The multiformat series comprises three T20s, one Test match and three one-day internationals.

The players travelled from Canberra to Adelaide on Monday.

Tom Bradshaw injures his knee

GARY ROWETT must be starting to wonder when Millwall’s bad luck will come to an end.

The Lions chief has had to deal with injuries and Covid-19 problems over the last month but at least was able to fill out his bench with first-teamers last Saturday for the first time since December 11. He would have been hoping his selection issues were a thing of the past.

But Rowett’s relief at that lasted barely half an hour as he saw Tom Bradshaw, fresh from signing a new long-term contract, hobble off after slipping and suffering damage to his knee. After Bradshaw first put pen to paper in SE16 in 2018, he sustained an ACL injury twoand-a-half months later. Rowett didn’t sound overly optimistic about receiving good news.

Bradshaw, who had scored in five consecutive Championship games, looked sharp and confident early on, but Millwall, and Benik Afobe in particular, looked lost in his absence. Afobe looked even more lost when the other part of the Lions’ attacking combination, Sheyi Ojo, was forced off at the break after rolling his ankle.

already out long-term, Rowett must be questioning what he did wrong in a past life.

But if Ojo going off and another injury wasn’t a great surprise, Ben Thompson getting minutes most certainly was. This was the first time the midfielder had been involved since the Carabao Cup tie with Leicester in September, while in the league he had played just one minute all season.

Thompson’s introduction was even more surprising considering Rowett had natural winger, Tyler Burey, on the bench, but the 20-year-old was overlooked despite his bright cameo against Crystal Palace the previous weekend.

Just like against the Eagles, Millwall were at it from the get-go, with Afobe, Scott Malone and Ojo all trying their luck early on, although only the two loanees were

able to test Brice Samba in the Forest net.

Bradshaw and Malone had earlier combined but the left-sided player couldn’t get on the former’s cross and two visiting defenders were able to scramble clear.

Up the other end, Ryan Yates was unable make the most of a rare Forest attack. Having been perfectly found by the pantomime villain, Lewis Grabban, whose every touch was booed by the home faithful, the midfielder fired straight at a grateful Bartosz Bialkowski, although the Pole still needed to make a sharp stop.

That was one of few openings for Forest in the first half, but it proved the catalyst for Steve Cooper’s side to go on and take control of proceedings after the break.

Grabban continued to be booed, although he wasn’t shying away from the action. This time, he connected well with Brennan Johnson’s cross, but his flicked effort nestled in the gloves of Bialkowski rather than in the bottom corner.

Around the hour-mark, Millwall were forced to withstand a siege on their goal, but they somehow managed to hold firm.

In the space of 20 seconds, Steve Cook, Yates and Grabban all had great chances, but they were blocked on the line and the Lions were also thankful for the intervention of Bialkowski.

The game was quickly becoming one of the most end-to-end contests you’re likely to see, and while the Lions’ goal was

living a charmed life, Rowett’s team were playing their part in threatening to take the lead.

Space opened up for Thompson, who was expertly picked out by the lively Mason Bennett, but his finish lacked conviction and he failed to test Samba.

Bennett was at the heart of things once again late on when he fashioned a similar chance for Afobe whose volley Samba batted away to safety from point-blank range.

With both sides going all out for the three points, defensive duties had virtually gone out of the window. Unfortunately for the Lions, they were hit by a sucker-punch in the first of four minutes of added-time.

Malone took a quick throw-in near halfway but the Lions lost possession and Johnson broke away to slip in Philip Zinckernagel. Bialkowski got a glove to his dinked effort, but the ball broke to Grabban who received the gift to bundle home from two yards out despite Danny McNamara’s best efforts on the line.

It was Forest’s umpteenth opportunity of an action-packed second period, but Millwall’s sheer will to keep going for the victory despite losing two of their regular front three deserved to be rewarded with at least a point.

But, in keeping with how 2022 has gone so far, luck wasn’t on the Lions’ side, and they were left to reflect on yet another afternoon of what might have been.

Jed forced to clarify Attacker accused of refusing to play

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JED WALLACE took to Twitter on Sunday to spell out why he missed the game against Nottingham Forest last weekend after an accusation from a user that he had refused to play.

Wallace, 27, hasn’t featured since December 11 as he recovers from a quad injury.

The Lions attacker trained last week but had to have a scan before the game against Forest and was ruled out of the fixture.

Millwall boss Gary Rowett was asked about Wallace’s absence against the club who are trying to

sign him in this transfer window.

“He’s had a little quad strain,” Rowett said. “He trained Tuesday and Thursday and just felt his quad Friday.

“He’s had it scanned. I don’t think it’s particularly serious but there’s something there to concern him.”

But that still didn’t stop someone accusing Wallace of refusing to turn out for the side.

Replying to that on Twitter, Wallace wrote: “Thank you for your kind words, I’ve played over 200 games for Millwall and never took that for granted. Would never ever refuse to play, I’ve just had a minor setback on my injury.

Defender makes Orient move

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DAN MOSS could make his debut in the Football League this Saturday after joining Leyton Orient on loan until the end of the season.

Moss, 21, is the second young Lion to be signed by former Millwall boss Kenny Jackett for League Two Orient this season and could line up alongside Alex Mitchell in defence against Port Vale.

Millwall decided to recall Moss from a hugely successful loan spell at National League Yeovil Town and move him up a level.

Preston-born Moss played 23 times for the Glovers in a scheduled seasonlong deal. But Millwall are keen to react when players prove themselves and quickly move them on to the next stage of development.

“I’m buzzing to be here at Leyton Orient,” Moss told Orient’s website.

“It’s all come about pretty quickly from when I was playing against Southend for Yeovil, but I am really excited to get going.

“The football that I played at Yeovil was different to under-23’s football.

But with the amount of preparation I had done, I felt that I was ready to have made that step into senior football in the National League.

“I spoke with Alex Mitchell a few times before I’d signed for the club and he had nothing but good things to say, so it was a no-brainer for me to sign here in the end.’

“Personally, I want to establish myself to be a first team player here. I want to start as many games as possible and help the team however I can.

“As a team, the aim is clear. We want to be in the play-off places and push for promotion into League One.”

A number of Millwall fans leapt into the thread to support Wallace.

Meanwhile, one player Millwall hope could eventually be as successful for the club as Wallace is said to be attracting transfer interest.

Zak Lovelace doesn’t turn 16 until next week, when he can sign his first professional contract.

But the Daily Record in Scotland are reporting that Glasgow Rangers are monitoring the attacker, who became the Lions’ second-youngest player in history when he came on in the 1-0 win at Coventry City last

month.

The report says that Rangers, Leicester City and Brighton have watched Lovelace this season.

Millwall are desperate to keep hold of Lovelace but know they are up against the financial muscle of some of the UK’s football giants.

The Lions saw Manchester City pounce for Darko Gyabi, then 14 years’ old, in 2018, and Samuel Edozie, who was 16, a year later, and though the moves earned the club around £3million plus addons, it meant they missed out on potentially much bigger transfer fees if those players had stayed and established themselves as first-team players. Edozie has already played for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Millwall mourn duo

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ARE mourning the loss of Jack Fisher and Paul Hinshelwood.

Fisher (1925-2022) and his twin brother, George, were born on the site where the Dockers’ Stand is now located at The Den. Whereas George played over 300 games for the Lions, Jack made three appearances. Jack made his debut in a 2-1 Second Division defeat at West Bromwich Albion in October 1947.

He moved to Bournemouth in 1949 and made 52 Football League starts for the south-coast side before going on to play non-League football with Ramsgate and Weymouth. He became Poole Town’s manager in 1971.

Jack was the Lions’ oldest living player.

Paul Hinshelwood (1956-2022)

spent nine years at Crystal Palace before joining Oxford United.

He signed for Millwall in 1984 for £1,000. Paul made his debut in a 1-0 defeat at Leyton Orient before helping the side to promotion to Division Two under George Graham.

He played 74 matches for the Lions in all competitions, scoring three goals, which were all in victories, over Norwich City, Sheffield United and Southend United.

In September 1986, Paul, along with fellow Lion Nicky Chatterton, signed for Colchester, where he scored six times in 81 League games. Paul then had spells with Dartford and Whyteleafe, firstly as assistant to Steve Kember and then as manager of the Surrey club.

The Lions said: “Everyone at Millwall would like to send their sincerest condolences to [the] family and friends at this sad time.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk A DEBUT as a teenager in one of English football’s most intimidating stadiums against a hated local rival? It’s no surprise to hear that Nana Boateng took it all in his stride.

That’s because after he was given his first professional contract last summer he says he celebrated by playing PlayStation with his friends.

Boateng, 19, doesn’t talk down that big milestone in his career, it’s just that he recognises it is the first step on a journey he hopes will lead to a long and successful career.

Attacker Boateng had been with Millwall since the age of nine after being spotted following a showcase involving youngsters from schools in Southwark and Lambeth.

Almost ten years later, that day arrived as it does for lots of kids when it’s make or break, either the end of the dream or the start of picking up the pieces elsewhere.

“It was May of last year, it was a big moment but I wasn’t too fussed about it,” Boateng tells the News when asked to recall the day he went into the club to find out his fate. “It was a big moment but what matters to me is playing in the first team. But getting a professional deal was a good moment for me and my family.

“I was confident [of getting a deal] but you never know in football what’s going to happen. I wouldn’t say I was overconfident, but I was confident.

“I went home, played my PS4 with my friends and chilled. Getting a professional deal is only the beginning.”

It’s put to Boateng that he seems like a relaxed character. He agrees, but makes sure to clarify.

“A lot of people say that to me, but I know when it’s time to be relaxed and not be relaxed,” Boateng says.

“That’s crucial, work ethic in football.

That’s something you can’t mess up. Then there are other things like expressing yourself and enjoying it, really. That’s what I’ve been doing.”

Boateng took a cab to The Den last Saturday week for the third round of the FA Cup at a sold-out stadium, listening to music on the way.

His big moment arrived with nine minutes left in the tie when he was sent on in place of Sheyi Ojo. And he was a whisker away from a fairytale debut after just failing to reach a cross from Billy Mitchell.

“I was told the day before I was going to be in the squad,” Boateng says. “It was funny, I had been training with them but I didn’t know I would be in the squad.

“At the start, no [he didn’t feel nervous] but when I was warming up and getting ready I was nervous, to be fair. But when I got on the pitch I was just really focussed.

“It was crazy, when [Gary Rowett] told me I was in a rush, putting on my shin pads. It was big for him to put me on in a game like that against Palace.

“I almost scored, I was very sharp in my movement but the defender nicked it at the last minute. It was funny because I didn’t touch the ball in the game!

“The game was on TV, my phone was getting hot afterwards. It was a good moment, people recognising how hard I had worked to get my debut.

“I’m very happy for me and my family and friends, it’s been hard work over the years and it was an honour to

Two days after the Palace game, Boateng was back at The Den, this time playing in front of a handful of spectators as Kevin Nugent’s under-23s lost to Charlton.

“You always want to play football, when I was dropped down to the under23s I was happy, to be fair. It’s good to get game-time,” Boateng adds.

“It makes you a humble person. “[Nugent] is very good. If you’re in a bad mood, for example, he’ll always have a conversation with you, asking you what’s going on. That’s big for me, especially as someone who likes to express themselves in the final third.”

After the south London derby, Rowett challenged the young players to get into

the first team and make impacts in the league.

Boateng knows that has to be the next goal.

“Of course,” he says. “For me to be in and around the senior team is very big now. For me it’s now about being consistent in my performances and enjoying my football, I would say.

Expressing myself and entertaining the fans.”

Rowett has shown there is a path to the first team for academy players if they are good enough. Boateng has had advice from Jed Wallace, but it’s players like Danny McNamara and Mitchell who can be the biggest examples for him.

“There have been a few times when I was training with them and playing with them [for the under-23ss], to see

them as established first-team players now it makes you want to work hard,” Boateng says.

“I wouldn’t say it’s advice, it’s more about what they do off the pitch, on the pitch, I can see I need to push on.

“With someone like Jed, I play in a very similar position. He’s been in the game for a while, he’s very talented so it’s very good for me to watch him and, again, see what he does on and off the pitch.

“He tells me to work hard and that’s big coming from a guy who’s had a long career and done a lot of things for Millwall.”

As with any teenager who breaks into the first team, speculation around their future is never far behind. Already, reports have linked Rangers, Leicester

and Brighton with moves for fifteenyear-old Zak Lovelace.

Boateng won’t pay much attention if there are similar stories linking him with a transfer away.

“It’s step by step, from now my aim is to try to push into the first-team squad and see from there. I try to be realistic and not look anywhere else,” he insists.

“I want to try to build myself up.

“Right now it’s about me working hard to try to get into the first team, that’s the main thing.”

A packed Den on an FA Cup weekend has given him a taste for more.

“It does [inspire playing at The Den], football without the fans is not that good. It makes me more driven.

“I want to experience it even more to see how it is.”

Millwall must avoid No Man’s Land

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IF MILLWALL fall any further off the play-off places then this season is in danger of entering ‘transition’ territory.

But a transition to what is the big question.

The Lions were promoted to the Championship in 2017 and in the four full seasons since they have flirted with the top six late into three of them.

It’s the next step that’s the big one, actually getting there.

It’s about how do they do it.

Last Saturday’s opponents, Nottingham Forest, acted decisively early in this transfer window. Buoyed by their run since Steve Cooper took charge – when the team were bottom of the league – they signed striker Keinan Davis on loan from Aston Villa and defender Steve Cook from AFC Bournemouth. They are big statements in this division. They are signings designed to try to take the team to the next level in the Championship.

Stoke City quickly brought in Phil Jagielka after he left Derby and Lewis Baker from Chelsea on permanent deals. They also signed defender Taylor Harwood-Belli on loan from Manchester City.

Middlesbrough loaned Aaron Connolly from Brighton & Hove Albion and Folarin Balogun from Arsenal, players with Premier League experience.

Why pick out those sides and their January transfer business? They are clubs Millwall are trying to compete with for a place in the play-offs. Finish above them this season and there is a good chance that will be enough for the top six.

This isn’t to be critical of Millwall.

Those clubs have much more financial might than the Lions and, though it might be unpalatable to admit, are bigger draws for players in terms

And it’s not to say Millwall won’t end up reflecting on a successful window.

The Lions have shown their ambition by bidding for Derby’s Louie Sibley and Zian Flemming of Dutch side Fortuna Sittard.

The problem is those players mentioned above have already made

impacts and helped their sides to wins last weekend. And when the race for the top six is so competitive and close, three points at this stage of the season can make a big difference. Had Millwall beaten Forest – and Benik Afobe went so close to getting what surely would have been the winner moments before the visitors scored the only goal in injury-time – they would be six points

off Middlesbrough in sixth with a game in hand.

Millwall are probably in their most difficult spell of the season on the back of three consecutive defeats, uncertainty whether Jed Wallace will still be at the club next month and injury problems.

Centre-back on course for return

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THERE WILL be no Blackpool reunion for Daniel Ballard this Saturday – but the defender is set to be back next month to boost Millwall’s defensive options.

Ballard, 22, underwent knee surgery in December and it was expected he could miss three months of action.

But the centre-back is making good progress and is set for a February return.

Ballard made an immediate impression after signing on a seasonlong loan deal from Arsenal in the summer. He nailed down the rightsided centre-back position and scored once in 21 appearances. He also got his first goal for Northern Ireland last September.

Ballard made 30 appearances for Blackpool last season including starting their 2-1 win over Lincoln City in the League One play-off final.

Blackpool were keen to secure him on another loan this season but Ballard chose to move to the Lions.

“That’s the prognosis, he’s still got to do quite a bit but hopefully he will be back with us training in early February,” Rowett said.

“We’ve obviously then got to assess how quickly he can be back playing games.

“Originally it was the end of February and he’s a little bit ahead of schedule.

“It’s an area where we’re quite light in numbers at the moment, we’ve only got five or six defenders in the group which is not ideal.

“It will certainly be good to get Dan back.”

Need for speed Lions aiming to reinvigorate attack with youth

Lions manager Gary Rowett says the club are targeting “young, mobile, up-and-coming strikers” that can add “freshness” to the squad.

That would be a further departure from the ‘little and large’ combination that defined previous boss Neil Harris’ recruitment strategy. In Harris’ last transfer window at the club Millwall

signed Matt Smith and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, physical players who lack pace and mobility.

Rowett has attempted to evolve the side away from a rigid 4-4-2, signing more dynamic players such as Mason Bennett, Benik Afobe and Sheyi Ojo. But Millwall have still struggled to match their rivals for a play-off spot by having a prolific goal-scoring forward.

Jed Wallace has shouldered that burden from midfield with ten goals in each of the last two seasons.

Rowett knows to challenge for the top six the Lions need a forward who can get into the high double-figures. Fifteen players in the Championship have more goals this season than Millwall’s topscorer Tom Bradshaw, who has seven

but who is now injured.

Smith joined Salford City this week and Bodvarsson is also close to leaving, though the latter has not been in the first-team frame this season.

Wallace could also leave this month, while Ojo and Bradshaw are side-lined.

“We wouldn’t let those players out if we weren’t going to bolster the attack,” Rowett said when asked if he was confident of strengthening his attack this month. “Sometimes as a manager you have to accept and look at players that have had limited impact on the team in terms of goals.

“I know that’s sometimes down to opportunity but what I mean is that you therefore have to go and let them play. We’ve spoken about it in previous

“That’s the target. The club, the owner and myself have all spoken about how we’d like to go with that sort of plan.

Millwall forward Matt Smith completed a move to League Two Salford City this week.

Bolton Wanderers have made a loan bid for Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and the clubs have been trying to strike a deal over wages, with the Iceland striker one of Millwall’s highest earners. .

The Lions are also open to moving on Ben Thompson and Connor Mahoney in this window.

Rowett was asked if there had been any other significant offers for those that are available.

“Not at the moment, we’ve had quite good interest but it’s only really initial interest,” he said.

“We’ve obviously had offers but to get relevant offers for those players to consider letting them leave, we haven’t had that yet.

“But I would expect that to hot up.

“We’ve got some good players that haven’t played lots of football but I’m sure there will be clubs interested in them.”
