Why has the projected cost risen sixfold?

Liberal Democrat London Assembly member Caroline Pidgeon asked Labour mayor Khan why the cost had risen sixfold earlier this month. She compared the huge cost of this bridge to the Pont ChabanDelmas bridge in Bordeaux, in south-west France, which had a budget of just £130m and opened in 2013.

The Bordeaux bridge lifts and opens up in the middle to let boats through, just as the Rotherhithe bridge would have done. Pidgeon - who is also chair of the assembly's transport committee - wanted to know why the Rotherhithe bridge would have been so much more expensive than its Bordeaux equivalent.

Khan hit back, saying that the 53-metre span of the Bordeaux bridge is “substantially shorter” than the Rotherhithe-Canary wharf crossing - which would have been 180 metres long. He added that the £600m Rotherhithe estimate included building

Southwark News has been recognised for its "powerful tribute" to Folajimi Olubunmi-Adewole in the wake of the young Bermondsey man's death.

We devoted our April 29 front page to 20-year-old Jimi, who died in April after jumping in the Thames to save a drowning woman, and called for him to be given the George Cross, the UK's highest civilian honour.

The News' coverage was included in a year-end list of "powerful front pages driving change on behalf of their readers, demonstrating the enormous power of trusted journalism" by the News Media Association, an industry body for the press.

Inside the paper, we published an indepth article with tributes from Jimi's parents and uncle, his former headteacher in Peckham and former employer, as well as from local politicians.

We continued to cover the story as it developed, including the vigil to Jimi on Spa Gardens and the fundraiser for his family, as well as the start of the inquest into the Neckinger Estate man's tragic death.

The project shifted from being a bridge to a ferry in 2019 amid the skyrocketing costs, and was shelved entirely in April 2020 because of the first Covid-19 lockdown but not before TfL had spent some £13m on plans.

But some kind of crossing remains a “long-term aspiration for TfL”, the transport agency said in July. There is no pedestrian Thames crossing between Tower Bridge and the Greenwich foot tunnel, which connects to the southern end of the Isle of Dogs.

Southwark News started life as the Bermondsey News in 1987, as an A-4 photocopied sheet of paper and rapidly grew to cover the entire borough and the surrounding area. As the borough grew, so did the newspaper.

It is owned and run by Chris Mullany and Kevin Quinn.

Former reporters for Southwark News, they bought the title in 2002, after the founder Dave Clark died suddenly from cancer four years earlier.

Where is stompie the tank going?

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark residents were shocked to see Stompie, the Soviet battle tank that sits on a small patch of land near the Old Kent Road, had been removed on Tuesday, January 4.

Rumours circulated on social media that the tank, which sat at the corner of Page's Walk and Mandela Way, had been taken away as part of a dispute with the council.

But the truth appears to be more prosaic than that: Stompie has been taken away for restoration, owner Rhys Gray told the News.

When asked what the problem was with the tank, Mr Gray added that there was "currently" no need to worry.

The T-34 tank was reportedly used to help crush the Prague Spring more than five decades ago.

It was purchased by Russell Gray, Rhys Gray's father. a military enthusiast and developer, as a present.

Long-standing urban legend has it that Mr Gray put the tank on land at the end of Page’s Walk over a planning dispute with the council.

It has been said that he lost a planning decision with the council, so instead placed the tank there – with its guns pointing in the direction of Southwark Council's former offices in Camberwell.

Stompie is frequently decorated by graffiti artists and was most recently green. In April 2020 the tank was given a blue makeover to thank the NHS staff for their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

New data: A throwback to Fagin and his gang

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark is famous for being home to Fagin’s gang of pickpockets in Charles Dicken’s Oliver Twist – and still ranks high for this type of crime according to data from comparethemarket.com

Through Freedom of Information Requests to police authorities across the country the comparison website has listed Southwark as third highest hotspot for pickpockets with a total of 6,364 thefts in 2019 and 2020.

The area around Dockhead and Shad Thames, Jacob's Island in Victorian times, was the setting as the home for Fagin's gang of pickpockets in Dickens's novel as it was so crime infested in the 1800s.

Only Westminster with a staggering

27,524 and Camden with 9,898 beat Southwark into first and second place, while neighbouring Lambeth came seventh with 4,000 pickpocket instances in 2019 and 2020.

The research revealed that of the top 20 pickpocketing hotspots in the UK eighteen were in London, only Leeds ranked ninth and Sheffield seventeenth were listed as outside the capital.

As with all areas, while there were 4,217 thefts in Southwark in 2019, that decreased to 2,449 in 2020, no doubt due to the number of people at home because of Covid restrictions.

Pioneering children’s heart surgeon among THREE Southwark NHS staff honoured in New Year’s list

Three people from NHS hospitals in Southwark have been given New Year's honours in recognition for their years of service - including a man whose invention changed children's heart surgery around the world.

Professor Shakeel Qureshi, from Evelina London Children's Hospital, was made a Knight Bachelor. Dr Malur Sudhanva, from King’s College Hospital, was awarded an OBE. Vanda Fairchild, a nurse at Guy's and St Thomas', was given an MBE. Professor Qureshi, a globally respected heart surgeon for children, was given his knighthood for services to paediatric cardiology and charity.

He joined Guy's and St Thomas' trust in 1988 and realised that he was lacking the right equipment to operate on children who have congenital heart problems.

Undeterred, he co-invented the Tyshak balloon catheter, which allows many children and adults to have their heart defect treated without open heart surgery. His device is now used worldwide.

Professor Qureshi also invented a new piece of equipment to treat leaky heart valves in 2013 - the paravalvar leak device. He has been at the forefront of using and evaluating new systems to allow specialist doctors to treat leaky valves, and has organised teaching conferences for paediatric cardiologists worldwide for more than twenty years.

On the charity side, he is Chairman of 4 Peace of Mind, an organisation that helps give out aid to communities that are badly affected by natural disasters. He also works pro bono and is chairman of the medical board for the charity Chain of Hope, operating on sick children both in the UK and abroad, and training teams of doctors in less developed countries.

Professor Qureshi, who has four children and nine grandchildren, said: “When I got the email I read it several times before I responded because I thought it was a scam. It was a shock and I still haven’t got over it.

“To have somebody appreciate your work, values and contributions is an amazing feeling, especially when I look back at where I started.

“My parents moved from Pakistan to

Vanda Fairchild was made an MBE for her services to the NHS and to women’s martial arts. She retired from Guy’s and St Thomas’ earlier this year having been a nurse for 37 years.

She spent the last eighteen years working in the trust’s transplant, renal and urology team. Ms Fairchild became a clinical nurse specialist in 2013, and has helped young kidney patients and their families transition from paediatric services to adult kidney care.

Vanda said: “The nomination came as a complete surprise. When I opened the letter I laughed out loud and then burst into tears.

“I felt overwhelmed that someone had taken the time to nominate me.

I accept the award for myself and on behalf of all the nurses who have given so much of themselves to their roles in the NHS.” She also used to run an aikido club for children and adults in Rotherhithe, before retiring to go back to her native Leeds.

King's Dr Sudhanva, a consultant medical virologist, was given his OBE

for services to healthcare science, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said: “I am honoured and humbled by this recognition. This honour is dedicated to all my fellow laboratorybased clinical virologists, clinical microbiologists, clinical scientists, biomedical scientists, senior assistant technical officers, administrative staff, volunteers, managers, IT and procurement teams across UK, whose magnificent behind-the-scenes efforts have been such a crucial part of the UK’s COVID-19 response.”

“I arrived in the UK from India 25 years ago with a hunger for knowledge.

Wherever I’ve trained or worked, I have met so many people who have encouraged me to aim high, get work done, and let the result show for itself.

“Finally, I would like to thank my wife and son, for supporting me during the

long hours I spent working.”

More than 30 NHS staff members were given honours in the New Year's list, including chief medical officer Chris Whitty, who was knighted.

Andrew Ridley, regional director for the NHS in London, said: “All staff in London have gone above and beyond this year, from treating patients in the capital’s hospitals and communities, to delivering the life-saving vaccines to Londoners in the city’s museums, stadiums, pharmacies, GP surgeries and places of worship.

“It is great to see the breadth of the brilliant work our staff do reflected in the honours awarded, and I want to congratulate every one of those receiving recognition today for their relentless commitment and innovation to protect and improve the health of all Londoners, especially during the last two years.”

New infections were down across the six south-east London boroughs.

Lambeth, previously one of the worst boroughs for new cases along with Southwark, saw 5,947 new cases over

the past week, a decrease of nearly 25 per cent.

Bromley had 6,430 new cases, the most in south-east London and the fourth-highest in London overall, but was down by 6.7 per cent. Lewisham's new cases were down nearly 20 per cent at 5,682, while Greenwich saw a drop-off of more than ten per cent to 5,585. Cases in Bexley were down about one per cent, at 5,151.

Efforts to get the booster jab rolled out in Southwark continue, with 127,161 people fully vaccinated as of Monday (January 3), the latest figures available.

Police looking for woman in crystal palace assault

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police have appealed for help finding a woman who kicked two other women at the ticket barriers of Crystal Palace station last month.

The separate assaults took place on November 4 and November 9 at the south London station. The attacker then got on a train at platform one.

Double stabbing over Christmas

Man hospitalised in Bermondsey

Police were called by the London Ambulance Service on Wednesday evening 29 December at 8.07pm to reports of an assault on Cowley Road.

Officers attended and found a seventeenyear-old man with stab injuries and the a fifteen-year-old boy nearby also suffering from a stab injury.

Neither have life-threatening injuries and there have been no arrests.

A man in his 30s was taken by ambulance to hospital after ‘colliding’ with a car on Wednesday evening December 29, 2021.

His injuries are not thought to have been life threatening and no arrests have been made.

Council urges STI testing take-up Southwark Council has reminded people that testing for sexually-transmitted infections (STIs) is free, after a London man was found with a strain of gonorrhoea that was resistant to antibiotics.

The heterosexual man, who is in his 20s, is thought to have got the STI in November.

He has been treated successfully and health authorities are working to find out whom he could have passed it onto.

His case was resistant to the antibiotic ceftriaxone, the main treatment for gonorrhoea. This is rare in the UK. Search online for SH24 or SHL to get an STI test.

Peckham drug trafficker among two jailed for exploiting teenage boys to transport heroin and crack

Three boys treated as victims in the ‘Spencer Line’ were not prosecuted for their involvement

Two “callous” drug traffickers, including one from Peckham, have been jailed for a combined 23 years after running a county lines operation in Kent.

The pair ran the “Spencer Line”, a line which supplied heroin and crack cocaine between London and Kent, exploiting teenage boys in the process.

Javarni McPherson, 23, from Priory House, Peckham, and Trevis Abiola, 23, of St Mary Cray, Orpington, appeared at Hove Crown Court on November 22, where they pleaded not guilty to two counts of conspiracy to supply heroin and crack cocaine and human trafficking offences.

They were found guilty of both counts of conspiracy to supply heroin and crack cocaine on Thursday December 16, following a four-week trial.

The pair avoided conviction for conspiracy to commit human trafficking under the Modern Slavery Act. However, their criminal use of teenage boys was referenced throughout the trial as context to their offending.

Both men have been sentenced to prison terms, with nine years for McPherson and fourteen for Abiola.

The judge commented that “county lines drug supply is a matter of national concern” and “the sentences the courts impose have to reflect that public concern”.

Police began to crack down on the pair when a 15-year-old boy was stopped by British Transport Police officers at Stratford station, and was found to be carrying nearly £500, multiple SIM cards, a pot of vaseline and a cannabis grinder.

Initial enquiries revealed that the boy hadn’t been home in over a week before he was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in drug supply.

After analysing his phone, officers discovered a series of messages referencing drug supply sent from the Spencer deal line while he was in Canterbury in Kent just days before being stopped at the east London rail station.

One incoming message read “count everything”, to which the boy replied “62L” – relating to the number crack cocaine wraps he had left. Another message read “count bread” and the boy promptly replied “£250 there”.

Abiola and McPherson were identified as the controllers of the Spencer Line and arrested on July 1, after being stopped in a car travelling towards Canterbury.

Officers searched their home addresses and discovered a large number of mobile phones and SIM cards, more than £4,000 in cash, Class A drugs and designer clothing.

Data downloaded from the Spencer Line phone number revealed the pair’s lucrative drugs supply network between London and Kent.

It also identified two other teenage boys that were being used by Abiola and McPherson to transport drugs – one of whom had recently been reported missing by their parents.

All three boys were treated as victims in the Spencer Line drug supply business model and referred into the National Referral Mechanism for safeguarding. They were not prosecuted for their involvement.

Detective Superintendent Gareth Williams, BTP’s County Lines Taskforce lead, said: "Abiola and McPherson are callous and prolific county lines offenders that heartlessly exploited teenage boys for their own financial gain.

“I am pleased that my team’s efforts, along with fabulous support from Kent Police and the Metropolitan Police Service, have led to three vulnerable boys being safeguarded and removed from the clutches of these toxic drugs traffickers.

“We know that working closely with our policing colleagues is essential if we want to eradicate county lines offending from the railway network and these sentences demonstrate how effective a collective effort can be.”

Mystery ‘hit and run’ resolved?

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The partner of an East Dulwich man who has been left with terrible head injuries from a collision with a car while walking his dog has been left puzzled by apparently conflicting reports from police.

Tom Goodman, from the East Dulwich Estate, was out on Grove Hill Road at about 7.30 on December 8 when he was knocked unconscious by a car.

The driver called police and an ambulance for the stricken Mr Goodman. Paramedics rushed him to King’s College Hospital’s major trauma centre as a priority.

Mr Goodman’s girlfriend of nine years, Finola Jordan, who lives with him, said she got worried when the dog came back home without its owner. She went to the hospital to see him after being told he had suffered a fall. But when she got there, she was shocked by how bad his injuries were and said the explanation for how he got them did not make sense.

At this stage, Ms Jordan said, she was not told by police that the driver of the car had reported the collision. She went to investigate the scene of the incident and found skid marks and damaged bins, in the hope of coaxing police into investigating what she believed could have been a hit and run.

In the meantime, Mr Goodman was kept in hospital for two weeks while he was treated for bleeding on the brain.

“He had post-trauma amnesia,” Ms

Jordan said. “People don’t really know where they are, or who they are.

“For a few days [after the incident] he was unresponsive, for a few days after that he was talking absolute nonsense.”

Mr Goodman was eventually let out of hospital before Christmas.

Ms Jordan thought that local police detectives were still looking into the incident as of this week, as she had not been told anything different. But when contacted by the News, officers said that the incident had been reported by the driver.

A spokesperson for the police said: “Police were called at 7.43hrs on Wednesday, 8 December to reports of a car in collision with a pedestrian in Grove Hill Road, near the junction with Bromar Road, SE5.

“The collision was reported by the driver. The pedestrian was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service. No further details are available.

No arrests have been made.”

Ms Jordan said this was the first time she had heard that the driver themselves told police about the collision and added that she hadn’t had contact from officers for a while.

Mr Goodman, an insurance underwriter in the City, is unable to get back to work in his current state and will need therapy, Ms Jordan said.

“At the moment he can’t really be on his own. He doesn’t remember what happened or anything like that.

“He’s been much better the last couple of days, he’s been chatty - a bit more himself. He still has problems with memory and other brain functions.

“We’re hoping that over time it’s going to get better.”

Council education chief calls for more air filtration systems after own daughter was hospitalised Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council's head of children's services has called for the government to put more air filtration systems in schools across the country to help stop the spread of Covid-19 - after her own young daughter was hospitalised.

Education secretary Nadhim Zahawi has promised 7,000 air filtration machines in classrooms in a bid to slow the spread of the Omicron variant.

But Cllr Jasmine Ali said in a letter to Zahawi that this was "insufficient" - pointing out that there are 24,000 schools in the UK. Her estimate is that it would cost the taxpayer £200 million to roll the machines out in schools nationwide.

She said: "Given that the Omicron variant of SARS-Cov-2 is now spreading very widely in the community, it is to be expected that airborne transmission within schools will be extensive in the coming weeks.

"Opening windows will help, but not all classrooms have windows that open, and in the cold weather it will not always be possible to open windows."

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has been criticised for building a high proportion of its new council homes dependent on fossil fuels for heating and hot water, on the 1000-day anniversary of declaring a climate emergency.

Data obtained by the borough’s Liberal Democrats shows that 400 new homes given the green light by Southwark’s planning committees since March will rely on fossil fuels.

That’s 41 per cent of all council homes approved in Southwark since July. These homes represent about 24 per cent of all new schemes approved in the period.

Some 580 homes - the remaining 59 per cent, or 76 per cent of schemes - approved since July will use low-carbon equipment like air source heat pumps for heating and hot water.

It comes despite the council’s climate change strategy, published the same month, describing the “urgent need to move away from gas boilers as the primary source of heating in the borough.”

The same report found that 79 per cent

of all emissions in the borough relate to housing.

The council declared a “climate emergency” in March 2019. Because of this emergency, Southwark sped up its timeline for becoming carbon neutral by twenty years - from a target of 2050 to 2030.

At the November council assembly, the Lib Dems pushed for a motion to “ensure all new housing on council land is at least low carbon by design”. This was voted down by Labour.

Lib Dem leader Cllr Hamish McCallum (pictured) said: “Planning policies are one of the major pieces of the jigsaw when it comes to the climate emergency.

Southwark Labour have been unable to hold developers to account and clearly do not set high enough standards for their own buildings.

Despite the criticism, there are steps the council is taking to make sure some of its homes, existing and new, are fuelled with low-carbon energy sources.

Thousands of homes on the Wyndham, Consort and Newington estates across the centre of the borough are being converted from gas boilers to water source heat pumps. The Tustin Estate in south Bermondsey has had new insulation and double glazing put in in three of its towers,

which will boost energy efficiency.

Meanwhile the council is also running a pilot project on Ann Moss Way in Rotherhithe to work out whether council homes can be built to the energy-efficient Passivhaus standard.

Much of the council housing in the north of the borough is already fuelled by the south-east London combined heat and power plant (SELCHP) near Millwall stadium the Den. The council said in the July report that it wants to connect at least 17,000 more homes to SELCHP, These steps are not cheap - connecting more homes to SELCHP is set to cost £632m. Retrofitting homes with air source heat pumps will cost another £617m, the report said.

Southwark Council did not comment.

Cllr Ali, who has been in contact with one of the lead authors, called the study "another great British scientific and medical breakthrough, to be both celebrated and implemented".

The machines should be relatively simple to use, she added, and schools would need two for an average-sized classroom.

Cllr Ali said that the machines would be cost-effective, because they would help keep children in schools, the schools themselves open, and parents at work because they would be selfisolating less often.

It comes after Cllr Ali's own ten-yearold daughter was hospitalised with the symptoms of the post-Covid condition Paediatric Inflammatory Multisystem Syndrome (PIMS) before Christmas, although a diagnosis was inconclusive.

She was in the high-dependency unit at King's College Hospital, an experience that Cllr Ali called "terrifying", although her daughter had "fantastic" care and is much better now.

A spokesperson for the central government's department of education declined to comment on the specifics of Cllr Ali's letter.

Education secretary Zahawi said:

“The Prime Minister and I have been clear that education is our number one priority. These measures will bolster our support schools as we do everything in our power to minimise disruption.”

The 7,000 air filtration systems are being installed alongside other "temporary" measures in schools to help slow the spread of Covid including getting children in Year 7 and above to wear face masks in classrooms. This will last until January 26, when the government plans to review all existing Covid rules.

Omicron continues to spread widely, although there are signs that it may have slowed in Southwark. The number of new cases in the borough was down more than 21 per cent this week.

Southwark also ranked ninth among London boroughs for new infections, down from third before Christmas.

Three week delays to Christmas post

People living in East Dulwich and across the south of the borough have been "let down" by three-week delays to Royal Mail's Christmas deliveries.

The postal service said delays were caused by staff shortages because of Covid-19. Southwark is one of the London boroughs worst affected by the recent spread of the Omicron variant.

Royal Mail lists the fifteen postcode areas worst hit by delays on its website.

Three - East Dulwich, Sydenham and Herne Hill - are at least partly in Southwark.

Charlie Smith, councillor for the Goose Green ward in East Dulwich, said that he had received "numerous" complaints from locals about Royal Mail's Christmas service.

"People are bitterly disappointed not to have received any post from family and loved ones," he went on.

"The service has deteriorated since the old sorting office in Silvester Road closed and moved to Highshore Road in Peckham. But the current situation is worse and not good enough. I went to the Highshore Road office on Christmas Eve and was told by an officer on duty that many members of staff were absent with COVID related issues.

"I asked why casual staff had not been recruited for the run up to Christmas but was told a few casuals had been hired but were being let go that evening. There is a huge back log of post in the building waiting to be sorted and it is hoped some of the missing staff will return after the holiday and start sorting and delivering.

"Local people feel let down by the Royal Mail and I will by working hard with other local Councillors and our member of Parliament, Helen Hayes to discover the reasons for the poor service and hopefully for an apology and possibly compensation for any financial losses incurred.”

Royal Mail apologised for the inconvenience the delays caused and thanked people for their understanding.

Bacon’s experience refugee plights on charity walk Students at a Rotherhithe school have raised more than £1,500 for a charity that supports refugees.

Seeds of Hope hero gets royal approval A Peckham community champion has been given a British Empire Medal for her idea to hand out millions of 'seeds of hope'.

Rose Morgan, who works for Morrisons in Peckham, had the idea of handing out sunflower seeds to local schools and care homes among others, to give people hope amid the latest lockdown.

Chief executive David Potts agreed and the plan was rolled out across every Morrisons shop in the country, with millions of seeds given out, Rose Morgan BEM, Community Champion at Morrisons Peckham, said: “This recognition is such an honour. When everyone was emerging from lockdown after such a difficult time, I wanted to give my customers fresh hope and food for

the heart by putting smiles on as many faces as possible.

"I had the idea of using sunflower seeds to represent this new beginning and so emailed David our CEO to share it with him and I’m so glad he liked it - I am incredibly proud that I got to spread this message and it touched so many people this year with a much needed moment of joy and hope.”

Thomas’, said: “Our catering teams have been quietly beavering away behind the scenes for the last two months in preparation for the big day.

"Nobody wants to be in hospital during the festive season so we want it to be as enjoyable as it can be."

Staff gave about 1,600 gifts – mainly toiletries – to patients in hospital and to people who can't leave their homes.

Some 150 children and young people being cared for by Evelina London in hospital and in the community also received a gift.

All of this is funded by Guy's and St Thomas' charity and Evelina London children's charity, which support the three hospitals that make up one NHS trust.

Guy’s and St Thomas’: dishing out christmas dinner for 7,200 people

Guy's and St Thomas' gave Christmas lunch and dinner - as well as presents - to more than 1,000 patients who can't go home this year.

Hospital staff also served special festive meals to the patients on Boxing Day and will do so on New Year's Eve. Some 1,200 adult patients, as well as 150 children at Evelina London, got 7,200 meals between them.

As well as a traditional lunch with all the trimmings on Christmas Day, the patients had fresh orange juice and croissants for breakfast, afternoon tea with Christmas cake and an individual buffet box.

Hospital staff working on Christmas Day also got a free breakfast, lunch and Christmas cake.

Starting at Southwark Cathedral, the group from Bacon's College walked to various places that are relevant to refugees and migrants in London - and were accompanied by former refugees as they go.

Each stop was an opportunity to hear about the experiences of different groups of refugees that have come to the UK. One person who joined the walk, Ferdous, told students how he had come to the UK to seek asylum eight years ago and has been fighting to be recognised as a refugee since then.

Stops included the Brick Lane Jamme Masjid (or mosque), which was once a church set up Huguenot refugees from France in the eighteenth century, and

a synagogue for Jewish people in the nineteenth century.

Students also walked to a statue outside Liverpool Street station celebrating the Kindertransport, when thousands of children were smuggled over from Nazi Germany to the UK in the 1930s and 1940s.

Students raised £1,500 for the Jesuit Refugee Service, a Catholic charity in London that supports migrants.

Nick Hanrahan from the charity said it was "a great pleasure" to take part in the walk.

He added: "The students have led the fundraising efforts brilliantly and have always been very engaged and interested in learning more about the experiences of our refugee friends.

"We are incredibly grateful for the impressive sum raised, the gifts donated and messages of support shared with our refugee friends”.

christmas on the frontline for ambulance staff The London Ambulance Service is shining a spotlight on its staff and volunteers who have been working over Christmas this year.

Thibault Martin-Lagardette and Saman Al-Sahab are both emergency responders who spend part of their time volunteering from the ambulance service's Waterloo centre.

Thibault volunteers for the ambulance service alongside his job as a software engineer.

He said: “I joined because I always liked helping others around me, and I thought being an ER would help me have a direct impact on people’s lives.

“I knew I’d enjoy it, but I didn’t expect how much I’d enjoy being able to help people when they are at their most vulnerable – it is a truly rewarding experience. And sometimes, we even get to be the difference between a life saved and a life lost.”

Thibault worked in the afternoon of Christmas Day and Boxing Day this year – as well overnight on New Year’s Eve. He usually goes back to France to spend time with his family but has chosen to stay in London this year.

Thibault added: “This is my second year volunteering over Christmas. It is a special time for many people, and I particularly connect to its spirit of giving

and sharing.

“While most people enjoy some great family time, some may not be as lucky. By volunteering over Christmas, I am giving and sharing my personal time to help the unlucky few. I can’t think of anything more in the spirit of Christmas than that!”

Saman is a medical student who has volunteered for the ambulance service for two years.

He said: “I love the social side of the Emergency Responder scheme, working with close friends in the car as well as getting to know the local ambulance crews. I also enjoy thinking on my feet and not knowing what the day is going to bring, especially the most important decision of the day: where we’re going for food!

“Most importantly, it’s very rewarding to be able to help patients.”

Saman worked a few shifts over Christmas and New Year in 2020 and this year has worked throughout December and between Christmas and New Year.

He added: “Everyone is generally in good spirits and there’s a lovely festive atmosphere among staff and volunteers, and it’s nice to get around and see all the Christmas decorations over London.

“An increase in visitors coming to London, as well as shorter, colder days, also bring additional challenges and it’s

still just as rewarding to be able to help patients and those close to them.

“I’m looking forward to another year volunteering as an ER as the scheme continues to grow from strength to strength.”

Daniel Elkeles, London Ambulance Service chief executive, thanked the volunteers and staff.

He said: “Our staff and volunteers are there for Londoners who need us, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.

“They are an absolute credit to London Ambulance Service and to our city, and I would like to say a big thank you to each and every one of them for everything they are doing, not just at Christmas but every other day of the year.”

Professor Edmonds himself said: “I am humbled by the re-naming of the unit. The clinic’s success is a whole team effort and I’d like to thank my colleagues and Diabetes UK for their continued hard work and commitment in providing the very best care for our patients."

Just two years after the service was first established, there was a 50 per cent reduction in patients requiring lower limb amputation at King’s.

This number has continued to fall

over the years. The hospital now sees around 9,000 diabetic foot patients each year, and it has an amputation rate of just 0.9 per cent, lower than the national average of 1.6 per cent.

Fitting tribute for foot clinic

A diabetic foot clinic in a South East London hospital has been named after a doctor who saved thousands of patients from needing amputation, including former England footballer Gary Mabbutt MBE.

Dulwich scouts to get a thousand pound facelift A Dulwich Scouts centre will be entering 2022 with a brand new transformation, thanks to a "tremendous" donation from a decorating and DIY specialist.

South London Scouts have bagged a thousand pounds worth of materials from DIY specialist Leyland SDM, as a result of their Give London a Lift campaign which has seen the business give away £10,000 worth of materials this year.

The money will be used by the Scouts to improve their centre on Grange Lane for the 5,000 young people and visitors from around the world who use the space.

David Liddle, a leader at South London Scouts, said: “This prize is a tremendous boost for us. We’re a charity organisation so every penny really does count and a donation like this goes a long way.

“We have 96 Scout groups and 30 Explorer Scout units across South

London. Our centre, the South London Scout Centre, has wonderful facilities and with these materials we’ll be able to give it a new lease of life for the benefit of all who use it.

“I’m really looking forward to visiting the new Leyland SDM store in Dulwich to meet the team and collect everything we need for our makeover.”

Paul Gerreli, Marketing Director at Leyland SDM, said: “The South London Scout Centre is embedded in the Dulwich community so it’s brilliant to be able to lend a hand with this prize.

“We know funding can be hard to come by so a donation like this really does make a big difference to all the people who use the facility.

“Our new Dulwich store has only been open for a couple of months but is already very involved in the local community, and this is another example of that.”

The pioneering diabetic foot clinic at King’s College Hospital has been refurbished and re-named after Professor Michael Edmonds, the doctor who established the clinic and saved thousands of people with diabetes from foot and leg amputations.

Professor Edmonds created the world's first dedicated multidisciplinary diabetic foot service at King’s in 1981.

Issah Sesay, from Ark Global Academy said he was inspired to go for the scholarship after reading about the success of Joshua Adeyemi, another student from Ark Global who achieved the scholarship in 2017.

“It’s not something I had originally imagined,” said Issah, "but then I read that someone else from my school, with a similar background had got in.

“I thought, it’s worth a shot.”

Joshua said to the News at the time of his scholarship that he himself had been inspired to apply after reading about Ahmed Roble from Walworth Academy.

Issah will be studying Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry for his A Levels. At the moment, he wants to go on to study Medicine at university.

“It sounds a bit cliché,” he said, when asked why he chose medicine, “but it’s the helping people bit that inspires me. Medicine combines a lot of human elements for me.”

£200m is a small price to pay if filtration systems in schools keep children healthy

W

e have long known that ventilation has been key to helping avoid Covid-19 infection.

For all the ‘hygiene theatre’ of Transport for London and restaurants telling us they wipe down every surface and deep clean their facilities, it has long been established that airborne droplets and aerosols are the main way that Covid-19 is passed from person to person.

This makes it stranger that the government is only now putting in air filtration systems in schools, and only 7,000 machines at that. As Cllr Jasmine Ali, Southwark Council’s deputy leader and head of children, young people and education, is quoted saying in the paper this week, there are roughly 24,000 schools in the UK, and each average-sized classroom would need two.

This would cost about £200m, she thinks - relatively small change in light of the possible benefits it could bring, and the amount of money the government has spent on other things.

Education secretary Nadhim Zahawi has said that he is committed to keeping schools open.

He told the BBC this week of “the painful lesson” the government had learned - that children’s mental health was substantially damaged by being out of the classroom.

That’s quite apart from the unknown physical health impact of actually getting Covid-19.

Cllr Ali’s ten-year-old daughter was hospitalised with what may have been the virus at the end of the year.

As schools come back after the Christmas break this week, the government should be doing everything possible to keep children in them, and protect their mental and physical health while doing so. Ventilation is key to this, and that’s why we support the council’s calls for air filtration machines in every school.

Colour Prejudice is Wicked

in Southwark

Oppressing people because of their colour, bullying those who are different or destroying cultures by eliminating all the academics and scholars is Wicked, and that is exactly what happens in Stephen Schwartz’s long-running, awardwinning musical of the same name now celebrating fifteen years at the Apollo, writes Michael Holland...

Wicked begins with the people of the Land of Oz celebrating the death of the Wicked Witch of the West. But dumb blonde Glinda tells them how she was once friends with their sworn enemy and puts to them another choice from jumping to conclusions. Cue flashback.

You don’t see many babies being born on stage and you definitely don’t see green babies. However, little Elphaba’s white father immediately disowns her at birth because of her colour, which is the beginning of Glinda - the Good Witch - narrating the backstory, revealing how she and Elphaba became friends.

We see them sharing a room at university where Elphaba is shunned

for being green and called the Wicked Witch, while Glinda feels sorry for her.

When handsome Fiyero arrives he is as shallow as Glinda, who immediately sets her sights on him at the dance, but he has eyes for Elphaba, much to Glinda’s annoyance. They continue through their lives having ups and downs but always respecting each other’s differences.

Their tutor, a talking goat, is discriminated against for being a talking animal and fired. Elpheba wants to have a strong word with the Wizard of Oz about this outrage and is allowed a meeting with him in the Emerald City. Unfortunately, he turns out to be a blustering fraud who is turning the population against each other to keep

his human power base onside. It all sounds very familiar and it is impossible not to equate this ploy with the reality of Boris Johnson’s blustering buffoon act. The plot of Wicked, however, is easier to understand.

Wicked The Musical is based on Gregory Maguire’s book, which reimagined the characters of L. Frank

change.

Stark black and white photographs show riots and demonstrations of recent times but the paintings are more subtle. Lubaina Himid, who currently has a retrospective exhibition at Tate Modern, exhibits her Toussaint L’Ouverture collage; the leader of the Haitian revolution that gained freedom from slavery but who has been marginalised from history. Among

the collage materials are fragments of newspaper articles on the negative experiences of black people.

I was accompanied by actor and writer, Frank Prosper, who had become quite emotional in Michael McMillan’s immersive Front Room installation. He recalls his school education as being told he came from ‘living in mud huts in Africa, and slavery… But now I’m finding out we have a rich history of artists

- Proper stand-up people - who have done their bit for this country’s history.’

Another progressive note is that Tate has acquired seven of the artworks in the exhibition. These additions to Tate’s collection, while acknowledging that neither Henry Tate nor his partner Abram Lyle were ever slave owners, will help people come to terms with how Tate’s fortunes were built on the foundations of slavery.

Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz earlier tome. It is about good versus evil, so we see that the Wicked Witch of the West was not born evil but was turned bad by trying to do good. We learn how the Cowardly Lion became that way, and how the Tin Man with no heart once had a heart full of unrequited love for the girl of his dreams. Predominantly, we discover that being nice to people has better outcomes than being nasty.

Of course, good overcomes evil but, alas, with much sadness on the way. The battle is fought in a rich production in a fantastic set that is rarely still, and in costumes that magnify the money spent on making this a magnificent show that will very likely reign for another 15 years.

My favourite was Sophie Evans as Glinda. She worked her silliness to perfection and made her character lovable and not just an airhead. Laura Pick, however, as Elphaba, had a voice that soared and was a match for the set, the costumes, and all the bullying that she came up against.

From February 1st, Lucie Jones (Elphaba), Ryan Reid (Fiyero), SophieLouise Dann (Madame Morrible) and Gary Wilmot (The Wizard) will lead the new London cast.

Tate On Trend With Life Between Islands

In the week when Barbados freed itself from its colonial shackles and ditched The Queen as its head of state by becoming a republic, the timely opening of Life Between Islands is another exhibition that adds to the rich and creative input that black people have given to Britain’s history, , writes Michael Holland...

Another exhibition that adds to the recent documentaries and dramas on TV and in theatres that helps us as a nation to move away from the idea of Black History being a separate entity and think of the past as Our History.

The exhibition showcases four generations of artists over 70 years of culture and experience through paintings, photography, sculpture, fashion, and film, with a chronological flow that takes us from the art created by the Windrush generation to contemporary and brand new artworks; from the early, colourful Caribbean Artist Movement’s modernist work inspired by a landscape left behind to the rise of Black Power in response to increasing racism from the National Front - And the institutionalised racism within the police force.

Of course, quite a lot of the exhibits have been seen before but that does not diminish their powerful message.

In fact, it reinforces what the black population has been saying for decades, and the more we see these images the more they will resonate and instigate

Life Between Islands is the real history of Britain and the Caribbean whether you like it or not. And, thankfully, this is the history that children are now being taught in schools. When they learn about the reign of Queen Elizabeth I they will also learn that she got rich from trading humans.

Murder, shooting parties and a parachuting monkey

The British institution of the local pub is under serious threat. In the last few decades, countless pubs all over the country have closed and many others could follow. The Beehive in Carter Street, Walworth is one of these, with plans put forward by the current landlords to convert the pub into flats, writes Neil Crossfield...

In recent years, pubs are just places we go to for a meal or meet friends for a few drinks, yet in earlier times they played a far more key role in the community they served. Many people in Southwark will have great memories of the pub over the last 50 years or so but this article concentrates on some of the less wellknown stories from its long history.

Henry Montgomery, the father of Viscount Montgomery of El Alamein, was a local priest and historian. In his 1889 book Kennington and its Neighbourhood, he notes the presence of a Beehive Tavern in Walworth as early as 1799. Though the location of the pub may have changed slightly over time, we can safely say that there has been a Beehive in Walworth for over 200 years, and it is believed that the current building is from about 1830.

Its appearance and design would have undergone many changes over time yet it appears to have functioned as a public house throughout.

The pub holds a particularly important place in British sporting history, as cricket was played there from the late 1700s. The Montpelier Cricket Club was founded in 1797 and initially played its home matches at the Montpelier Tea Gardens. In 1827, a publican called John Bryant took over the Beehive and had set up his own cricket ground next to the pub.

Just a few years later in 1831, the Montpelier Club moved down the road to the Beehive Ground. They stayed here till 1844 when the land was sold for housing schemes, including that of the nearby Sutherland Square.

Cricket was not the only sport at the Beehive. Archery competitions were being held as early as 1839 and pigeon shooting matches were also common.

The accuracy of those participating was not always great: in 1834, a journeyman shoemaker called John Phillips was shot in the arm, side and face whilst walking past the Beehive when a shooting match was going on.

In the mid-nineteenth century, the now largely forgotten sport of pedestrianism became hugely popular.

Initially beginning with members of the aristocracy betting on races between their footmen, pedestrianism developed into a major sport. There are many reports of these races taking place at the Beehive in the 1840s and they often attracted crowds of 3,000 or more.

Running races were also held there.

One Saturday in April 1845, a renowned runner named George Sherrin took part in a 440-yard hurdles race - against a horse. Though Sherrin had started well, the horse - Bob - soon took the lead but then refused to jump one of the hurdles, allowing the human to win.

This must have been a year of eccentric challenges, as on September 15 a young boy of sixteen named Molloy took part in ‘the Egg Match’. One hundred eggs had been placed one yard apart and the lad had to pick up each egg in his mouth

and transfer it into a tub of water at the end of the course. Despite poor weather, he managed to do this in 48 minutes, covering five and ¾ miles in doing so and winning himself £10.

Prior to the establishment of public mortuaries and coroners’ courts in the late 19th century, many inquests were held in local pubs. It is believed that this was because they were large enough to accommodate the coroner and jury but also would usually have a table large enough to display a body. The Beehive was no exception and in January 1857, the pub was used in the inquest of a terrible double murder where two young children, Edwin Fuller Bacon aged three and his infant sister, Sarah Ann, had been murdered by their mother who had recently been released from St Luke’s Asylum. Inquests were being held here at least until 1881 when it hosted an inquiry into a fatal fire at 96 Walworth Road in which four people had died.

When a building has been around for so long it is bound to see some sadness and tragedy. On August 14 1901, the

publican Ernest James Suckling lost his daughter, Ethel, only 31 hours old, in a terrible accident. Doctors had ordered this nurse, Catherine Hoyle, to swaddle the child in cotton wool to keep it warm.

Unfortunately, while warming a piece of this cotton wool in front of the fire with the baby on her lap, it ignited the material around the infant. Despite his best efforts to extinguish the flames, the baby died shortly afterwards of severe burns and shock.

However, not all the history of the pub is so bleak. It was the meeting place for many clubs and organisations which flourished in Victorian London. In March 1878, a meeting of the Excelsior Lodge of the Royal Antediluvian Order of Buffaloes took place. The ‘Buffs’, as they were known to members, were a fraternal organisation started in London in 1822, to provide philanthropic and charitable assistance to its members and the local community.

In February 1885 up to 40 members of the Walworth and Newington Branch of the Hearts of Oak Benefit Society held

a dinner at the pub. This was a Friendly Society set up to provide support in times of distress through sickness or injury. Members would contribute a small sum of money each week which went into a central fund to be drawn upon should they need to do so. On this night the members “sat down to a repast placed on the table with that liberality for which the worthy host, Mr Last is so well famed”. During the evening members of the group sang together, and Sergeant Allen of the 1st Surrey Rifles, an Indian Mutiny hero, also performed some “capital and warlike songs.”

Pubs were often used to host various sales of goods or provisions but few of these auctions could have been so exotic as the one which took place at the Beehive on 27 January 1842. The Weekly Freemans’s Journal reported that a Mr. Batty, proprietor of a collection of wild beasts, sold various animals from his menagerie. The variety and number of animals sold that day afternoon was astonishing, and prior to the sale, they were displayed in the grounds of the Beehive. Apart from an‘remarkably clever’ talking macaw and a pair of ‘Esquimaux’ sledge dogs, Batty sold a trained Barbary lion for 105 guineas, the allegedly largest polar bear in Europe and a trained male elephant for 350 guineas. A puma was sold for £14, a Bengal tigress for £90 and a five-toed sloth for 12 guineas.

Perhaps one of the most bizarre sights ever witnessed by the regulars occurred in September 1837 when a monkey parachuted onto land next door to the pub. This was part of Mrs. Graham’s spectacular balloon show at the nearby Surrey Zoological Gardens.

The unfortunate creature was dropped

in a small cage from around one hundred feet in a primitive parachute but had been blown off course when it had not opened properly. The monkey may have been the famous ‘Signor Jacopo’ who was a veteran of over 200 parachute jumps.

Astounded drinkers in the Beehive would not only have had the rare sight of a parachuting monkey but the lucky finder would receive a reward of £2 and free admission to the Surrey Zoological Gardens.

One of the darkest days in the history of the Beehive was on 23 June 1944. The citizens of Walworth had suffered greatly during the blitz but after D-day you could perhaps excuse them for thinking that the worst was over. Yet just over the Channel, Hitler was preparing to unleash a terrible new vengeance weapon on London. At 02:28, Carter Street was shaken by a massive explosion. A V1 flying bomb had hit demolishing at least five houses and causing severe blast damage to many other properties in the surrounding streets.

Ten people died in this incident and many more would have been injured.

This was the first of six V1 flying bomb attacks on Walworth between June and August 1944. The pub survived with minor damage.

There is still much more to learn about the Beehive’s history and the stories related here are just a snapshot of its past over the last 200 years. It certainly has seen its fair share of joy, sadness, triumph, and tragedy. However, despite the current impact of the pandemic, as we have seen the pub has proved remarkably resilient over the years and has always been able to adapt and reinvent itself to cater for an everchanging local community.

Public Notice - London Borough of Lambeth - DESIGNATION OF AN AREA FOR ADDITIONAL LICENSING Section 56, Housing Act 2004 The London Borough of Lambeth (“the Council”) in exercise of powers under section 56 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) hereby designates for additional licensing the whole of the area in its district, as delineated in red on Map 1. The designation falls within a description of designations for which the Secretary of State has issued a General Approval dated 26 March 2015 and was approved by the Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness in a decision taken on the 4 August 2021. Bermondsey’s ‘2Slick’ Kongo, 29, has a professional record of 12-1-0. He lost the first fight of his career last time out, coming out the wrong side of a unanimous decision against Michael McKinson in a WBO global welterweight title bout in Gibraltar last March.

But he hopes this deal is a route to world title contention.

Kongo is now trained by Ben Davison, who has worked with heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and also trains undisputed world super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor.

BOXXER announced Kongo was joining alongside London heavyweight Jeamie TKV. Promotion company BOXXER signed a four-year deal with Sky Sports in June 2021 and also have Tyson’s cousin, Hughie Fury, in their stable.

Kongo, who is managed by Brixton’s Dillian Whyte, is targeting the top ten in the world rankings.

“I have a new promoter to push me and get me to where I want to be at world level and to challenge for a world title, and of course a new trainer in Ben who will ensure that I get back to the top,” Kongo told Sky Sports.

“I really can’t wait to get back in the ring now. The important thing for me this year is to get back to fighting, keep active and climb back up the world rankings.”

Meanwhile, the British Boxing Board

of Control (BBBofC) has suspended all boxing in January as the NHS comes under added pressure during the latest winter wave of Covid-19.

The board said in a statement: “Following advice from the British Boxing Board of Control Medical Panel, boxing tournaments under the jurisdiction of the BBBofC will be suspended for the month of January.

“A further review by the Medical Panel and Stewards will take place prior to the planned recommencement of Boxing in February.”

Surrey duo jet off for Women’s Ashes

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY’S SOPHIA Dunkley and Nat Sciver are travelling to Australia early this month to prepare for the multi-format Ashes series in January and February.

England will begin with a four-day Test in Canberra before three T20Is, two in Sydney and one in Adelaide on February 4, 6 and 10.

Three ODIs follow that, one in Adelaide and two in Melbourne on February 13, 16 and 19.

The series is decided on a points system, with the winner of the Test taking four points and the winner of each white-ball match getting two.

The matches will be available on BT Sport for UK viewers.

Alice Capsey and Bryony Smith will also be Down Under as part of the ‘A’ squad shadowing the senior group on tour and playing a number of fixtures.

Meanwhile, Rory Burns and Ollie Pope will be trying to help England salvage some pride in the last two tests of the men’s Ashes.

England are 3-0 down with the fourth Test taking place from January 5-9 in Sydney.

The sides then travel to Hobart in Tasmania – changed from Perth with Covid-19 restrictions in Western Australia – for the final Test of the 202122 series which will run from January 14-18.

Ben Foakes and Jamie Smith were in Australia with the England Lions but were sent home after the completion of their match programme.

Former Hamlet striker Dipo Akinyemi scored the only goal in the 56th minute as ex-England caretaker manager Peter Taylor’s side claimed the three points.

Allassani, 26, started his fourth spell with Dulwich on the bench as the visitors began brightly with Charlie Grainger saving a shot from another former Hamlet player, Kristian Campbell.

In the sixth minute, Danny Mills got on the end of a cross to cause a scramble in the box before Jordan Green fired wide.

Green then found Jordan Higgs whose deflected cross was tipped over by goalkeeper Jack Sims.

From the corner Mills had a header blocked close to the line before Welling managed to scramble the ball clear.

Set-piece specialist Gio McGregor fired a 30-yard free-kick wide before Green and Higgs set up Darren McQueen in the box but he couldn’t get his shot away.

McGregor sent another free-kick over the bar before Welling finally had an attack of their own as Grainger held former Millwall attacker Mason Saunders-Henry’s effort.

Mills then tried an overhead-kick from Andre Blackman’s cross from the left but the ball went just wide.

Gavin Rose’s side continued to press and Higgs and McGregor had attempts blocked as an away defence including Millwall loanee Arthur Penney stood firm.

And it was the Wings who went closest to going in at the break ahead when Saunders-Henry set up Akinyemi for a shot that Grainger tipped onto the post.

Welling were a real threat after the break as Grainger was forced into

saves by Akinyemi, Saunders-Henry and Campbell.

Welling went in front eleven minutes into the second half when a long ball forward found Akinyemi who raced clear to beat Grainger.

Allassani then came on for Tyrone Sterling to go up front with Mills as Rose switched to four at the back.

With fifteen minutes left, Michael Timlin found Green on the right but Sims saved at the near post.

The Hamlet then almost gifted the visitors and Akinyemi a second by giving the ball away but the forward’s shot was blocked inside the box.

The hosts committed more players forward as they sought an equaliser and Jack Holland headed wide from Blackman’s cross in the 83rd minute.

But Akinyemi was still a consistent menace and he held off a couple of tackles before firing towards the near post to test Grainger again.

Dulwich then went agonisingly close to a leveller when substitute Deon Moore reached Blackman’s cross but his looping header hit the top of the crossbar.

The Hamlet had one last chance in the 90th minute as McGregor sent a free-kick into the box but Mills’ header was saved by Sims.

It was Welling who went closest to scoring in the four minutes of addedtime when after another goalmouth scramble the ball was cleared off the line.

The result left Dulwich sixth in the table, eight points off top side Maidstone United with two games in hand.

Rose’s side travel to fifth-place Dartford this Saturday for a 3pm kick-off.

For the fourth time since mid-October, the Lions followed an impressive win with a defeat in the next game.

Their other loss in that time followed a draw against high-flying AFC Bournemouth, a match they should have won.

There must be a lot of head-scratching at Calmont Road over the wildly inconsistent form.

Even within this game it went from the shoddy to the sublime but then back again as Andreas Weimann finished with the match ball under his arm.

At half-time in the early kick-off last Sunday, Millwall stood eighth in the table and there was little sign they would not finish the game there.

But then a defence containing players who have been so dependable for so long gifted Weimann his second and third goals.

The Robins forward finished both chances from within ten yards of goal.

As Lions boss Gary Rowett alluded to afterwards, you wouldn’t expect that to happen with a back three of Shaun Hutchinson, Alex Pearce and Jake Cooper.

The frustration is that Millwall had produced moments of real quality.

Sheyi Ojo probably hasn’t played to his full potential often enough since his loan move from Liverpool. But he showed his ability just before the half-hour as he gained possession in midfield to run away from opponents before sliding Benik Afobe through on goal.

Afobe was then scythed down in the box by Ryley Towler. It appeared cynically intentional rather than a mis-timed tackle, and Towler escaped with a yellow card.

Rowett suggested later it could have been red. Afobe, against his former club, kept his cool to fire low to the right past Max O’Leary and make it 2-1.

The visitors had responded well after Bartosz Bialkowski’s mistake in the seventh minute. The Pole doesn’t make many, but in the wet conditions he miskicked his clearance and Weimann controlled before lobbing the ball into the unguarded net from 30 yards.

The Lions didn’t let that upset them and levelled in the 23rd minute. It was a brilliant cross from the left by Murray Wallace and Tom Bradshaw finished from close range. Bradshaw has scored in five consecutive games and if he gets a goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday will match Lee Gregory’s run in February 2016.

Afobe’s goal then put Millwall in control and they kept that lead until seventeen minutes left.

They then gave away another poor goal.

When Han-Noah Massengo collected possession on the left Millwall’s defence

pushed up and it was midfielder George Evans who tried to track the run of Weimann. But the City player had just too much pace and got their first to flick Massengo’s cross past Bialkowski.

Five minutes from time, the hosts got the winner. A combination of Evans and Danny McNamara blocked Alex Scott’s shot on the line, but Weimann was in the right place to slam in for his hat-trick.

Rowett was only able to name six substitutes on his bench, including fifteenyear-old Zak Lovelace and Nana Boateng, 19.

Mason Bennett was ill the night before the game and Evans had just a couple of training sessions after recovering from Covid-19.

With Jed Wallace again missing through a quad injury it stretched the visitors.

Yet they got themselves into an ideal position against a team that had lost their previous two home games and were booed off at the break here.

Not for the first time this season, Millwall gave their opponents a helping hand.

“The two second-half goals were bad from our point of view because we had three centre-backs, who should have dealt with the situations,” Rowett said.

“Our squad has been severely tested over recent games and every time we take a step forward in terms of getting players fit we seem to take another one back.

“We could possibly have had [the] game called off, but we didn’t want that to

happen because we felt we could build on our win at Coventry.”

Given their fluctuating form, it would be typical if Millwall went and beat Palace this weekend.

“I can’t remember it being deliberate at all,” Cooper says. “Obviously I knew what had happened but I actually thought my arm had been closer to my body before I saw it back.

“I looked like I moved into it but that was the afterthought of it.

“It was replaying on the screen, I couldn’t believe it. Chopper going mad was a funny moment.

“I saw the Everton players pointing at the screen, to the referee. I was thinking, ‘why the bloody hell is that playing up there?’

“Fortunately there was no VAR and the referee wouldn’t look at it. We got away with it.”

Millwall gratefully took that slice of luck and in the 94th minute Murray Wallace struck to send the Lions into their second quarter-final in three seasons.

There was his first appearance in the FA Cup for Millwall when as a 21-yearold League One player in 2017 he was part of Neil Harris’ side that knocked out Premier League Watford.

From that high to a low in the next round when he was sent off against Leicester City before the Lions battled heroically to score a last-minute winner through Shaun Cummings.

There was a memorable if chastening experience against Tottenham in the quarter-final, where the Lions’ run that season ended in the last-ever FA Cup game at White Hart Lane.

Skip forward two campaigns, Cooper scores with his arm against Everton and there is that famous scene of Harris shouting towards the technicians’ room to turn the big screen off as it showed replays of the goal.

As the Lions prepare to face Crystal Palace this Saturday, the News went on a trip down memory lane with Cooper...

February 18, 2017 Fifth round: Millwall 1-0 Leicester City A ‘bollocking’ from the boss

Millwall have knocked out top-flight Bournemouth and Watford to reach the fifth round.

It’s the 52nd minute and the Lions are going toe-to-toe with the Premier League champions, holding them goalless.

The ball is there to be won on the left touchline and Cooper – already on a yellow card – slides in on Ahmed Musa but he’s late. The inevitable second yellow follows.

Surely that’s the moment this cup run ends.

But the clock ticks on and Millwall continue to keep Claudio Ranieri’s side out despite the pressure building from the visitors.

Then, in the 90th minute, substitute Lee Gregory slips the ball through for Cummings – who is somehow in the opposition box – and the rightback coolly knocks the winner past goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

Delirium.

Cooper had showered and watched the late drama in the kit room. Then a clever piece of management from Harris. He tells Cooper, in private, he’s going to give him a ‘bollocking’ in front of the players.

“I think I completely forgot I was on a yellow, to be honest,” Cooper recalls.

“To make a tackle like that, I was young, I was a different player. I certainly think I wouldn’t make that kind of decision again. I think I’ve matured from that player.

“I was in the moment and in a big game it went away from me, I just made a poor decision.

“But the boys soldiered on and got a result and it didn’t matter in the end, thankfully.

“I got changed, went into the kit room and watched it on a tiny little tele. I just sat there and heard the roar of the fans, I was a bit jealous. But I was happy for the team and the boys.

“I remember Chopper coming in – because I was sat in there before everyone else – and saying, ‘I’m going to give you a bollocking but take it on the chin in front of the lads’. He just warned me it was coming. It was just to set his principles. That was a good touch from him, I knew he was going to give me a telling-off.

“It was just a warning to everyone else, to show his power in the dressing room.

“That was what happened and it was fine, there was no problem. He was fine and we moved on, he helped me improve after that so no issue.”

March 12, 2017 Tottenham Hotspur 6-0 Millwall A step too far Millwall held out for 31 minutes before the floodgates opened against Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Spurs were second in the league and that season scored four or more goals in thirteen games, including six and seven against Leicester and Hull.

Cooper put Harry Kane out of the game blocking the forward’s shot seven minutes in, but Pochettino brought on Christian Eriksen. Son Heung-min completed his hat-trick in the 92nd minute.

It was no disgrace that Millwall had no answer to their hosts’ relentless style.

“We were nowhere near,” Cooper says. “They were going for the Premier League, they ended up finishing second.

“It was the last FA Cup game at White Hart Lane, they played their fullstrength side. Their players were too

good for ours. We were a top-half team in League One and they were top of the Premier League with international players.

“It was a great insight into what those players are like, the speed and strength of that level. It was great for me at that age to get that experience, I’m sure some of the other lads will say the same.

“We did all right for half an hour and then the gates opened. But you tried to enjoy every minute of it even though you could see the difference in standards. Playing against those players and being tested every moment was a great experience.”

January 26, 2019 Fourth round: Millwall 3-2 Everton ‘Turn the f***ing screen off!’

Millwall are 2-0 up with two minutes to go after goals from Alex Pearce and Aiden O’Brien. The prize is a trip to Wembley to play Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City.

Then, in the 95th minute, disaster.

In the last action of normal time, goalkeeper David Martin drops Solly March’s free-kick over the line.

After extra-time, Cooper sent his spot-kick over the bar as Brighton went through.

“John Terry’s done it. I don’t really look back at it, to be honest, it’s gone from my mind,” Cooper says.

“I did my best. When I was a young player I took a few penalties. I was trying to go high down the middle-ish.

I got it wrong. It happens, you see it all the time.

“It was unfortunate it was in a moment like that.”

Some great memories, some not so great. But a chance to enrich their history in the competition this weekend.

“We just had that underdog mentality that we had been known for over the years,” Cooper adds. “The pressure was off and you know what The Den is like, especially back then, when it was just a mad atmosphere for the opposition team.

“We used that to our advantage. We played well on those days and it went our way.

“It was crazy, the Leicester game, the Watford game scoring late on. We did well to get through those games – it was a brilliant time.”

Cup romance beckons again for Muzza Defender scored winners in successive rounds in 2018-19

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MURRAY WALLACE is out to resume his magic Millwall FA Cup touch this weekend against Crystal Palace.

Wallace, 28, scored winners in successive rounds against Everton – in injury-time – and AFC Wimbledon three years ago.

They are the only goals he has scored in the competition, two of the nine he has for the Lions.

There were 94 minutes on the clock in the fourth round against the Merseysiders at The Den on January 26, 2019 when Steve Morison earned Neil Harris’ team a free-kick wide on the right.

Shaun Williams lifted the delivery into the box, Shaun Hutchinson headed down and despite the lateness, the rain and the number of bodies in the penalty area, Wallace had the composure to take a touch and fire past England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford into the bottom right corner.

Cue pandemonium at The Den. Wallace said he didn’t recall much of it then but has watched the scenes back more than once since.

“To be fair, I think I remember it more now than at the time,” Wallace says. “At the time it was all a bit of a blur, running off celebrating and the stadium just going mental.

“But I’ve seen it quite a few times

replayed and I remember it quite well. It was a good evening.

“I don’t think I did [celebrate later that night]. I had my partner’s brother down, he was doing a bit of work experience with Millwall in the sports science department.

“We just ended up having a chippy. I bumped into a Millwall fan in the chippy and he congratulated me. That was it, a pretty quiet evening.

“Again, away to Wimbledon, it fell quite nicely for me and I had quite a lot of room to head it into the back of the net. That’s all it took that day, a 1-0 win and into the next round.”

Wallace was denied the chance to score in a third consecutive round when Millwall hosted Brighton at The Den. The prize would be a semi-final against Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City at Wembley.

The Scottish defender picked up a second booking in the competition against the Dons which meant a one-game suspension, and in any case he was injured in a league game against Hull City that February.

But he was at the stadium to watch the Lions lead Brighton 2-1 in the 95th minute before Solly March floated in a free-kick that should have been a routine catch only for goalkeeper David Martin to let the ball squirm through his grasp and over the line.

The players rallied around the popular Martin before extra-time, but Millwall couldn’t pull off another upset as the visitors went on to win 5-4 on penalties.

Although it certainly didn’t feel like it at

the time, Martin’s mistake may have been a blessing in disguise.

Millwall were 21st in the Championship table after their next league game, a 3-2 defeat to Leeds United. They would have faced City on April 6 if they had gone through and who knows what a bad beating would have done to their already fragile confidence.

Instead, Harris’ side played West Bromwich Albion at home that Saturday as City faced Brighton, and won 2-0. It was arguably their most crucial result of the season and they built on it with three successive draws to get a little gap on the bottom three that eventually proved to be the difference as they stayed up on the penultimate day.

“I think I got injured a couple of league games after Wimbledon but I had picked up another yellow card in that game and was going to be suspended anyway,” Wallace recalls.

“I ended up getting injured and being out for the rest of the season which was disappointing, going from the highs of scoring a last-minute winner, beating Wimbledon scoring the winner, then to have an injury that ruled me out.

“I was at the Brighton game, in crutches. Again, that was a brilliant game and we actually deserved to win that.

Unfortunately it was just a late goal for them. “[Martin] had a bit of a tough season, he hadn’t been involved for the majority of it.

Towards the end of the season he came in and was doing really well.

“Obviously he made a mistake for their goal and I think it did hit him a bit hard. He was just really happy to be playing well in the league and taking his opportunity, and I don’t know if he felt that maybe knocked his confidence a little bit.

“It could have gone any way [against City]. But we were struggling in the league and maybe an extra game and having to rearrange another game, playing Man City and probably getting battered off the pitch wouldn’t have been the best for confidence or morale.”

Wallace was speaking to the News on Monday after the 3-2 defeat to Bristol City in the league the previous day.

It was a rest and recovery day for the majority of the squad, and Wallace was asked if he was already focussing on the

FA Cup tie and which of Palace’s quick forward players he could be directly facing.

Wallace replied: “It’s difficult to start thinking who you’ll be up against because in the cup games the managers like to change the team and maybe give some players who haven’t been playing as much as others a bit of a chance.

“You do start to think a little bit about those sorts of players you could potentially be up against just so you can do a bit of homework and see what their strengths are.”

One of Millwall’s strengths is set to be their home support with a packed-out ground for the first time this season.

Wallace added: “It’s brilliant anytime The Den gets sold out. It’s quite a big London derby so I imagine there will be quite a lot of heated emotions.

“It should make for a good atmosphere.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S JUST as well Millwall lost their last game before their south London derby against Crystal Palace in the third round of the FA Cup this Saturday.

About the only thing we can say is that probably increases their chances of knocking out their neighbours, given the pendulum swings of results lately.

The Lions have followed up each of their last five league defeats since August with a win in their next game. So hopefully that pattern will continue this weekend.

There are other things in their favour.

One is a sold-out Den that over the previous five seasons has roared the side on to victories over Premier League teams AFC Bournemouth, Watford, Leicester (then the reigning top-flight champions) and Everton.

Millwall were seconds away from reaching a semi-final in 2018-19 when leading another Premier League side, Brighton, 2-1 before David Martin dropped Solly March’s mis-hit free-kick over the line in the 95th minute. Shane Ferguson was sent off for a stamp in the 119th minute and the Seagulls won 5-4 on penalties.

The Lions haven’t fared so well at home in the competition under Gary Rowett, losing to Sheffield United and Bristol City in the fourth round in the last two seasons.

They were limp displays but the sight of the Eagles in their own backyard for the first time in a competitive game for almost nine years should have everyone fired up.

Rowett has also rested players in this competition and the big question is whether he will take the same approach against Patrick Vieira’s side.

Ordinarily, the answer to that would be an emphatic ‘no’. Why not put out the full complement for arguably Millwall’s biggest third-round home draw this century? But Millwall already have two more games to fit into their schedule after festive postponements.

Some of it will also be out of Rowett’s control. First-team players Daniel Ballard and Ryan Leonard are already long-term absentees. Jed Wallace is a doubt, Mason Bennett was ill before the defeat to Bristol City last weekend and that’s before

“There were quite a few,” Evans said.

“Milner was a big one. Frank Lampard came which was massive for me.

“When Frank came into City he helped me to develop so quickly. I was at a stage where I was fortunate enough to be around the first team every day.

“Frank came in and changed my whole outlook on football, the way he worked, the way he trained, the way he never settled. He’s such a professional and it was

something I relished as soon as I saw him.

“He was brilliant, he would talk to me every day about certain things, runs to do and after watching him play that was when I decided I needed to add more goals to my game. He was so effective and so brilliant at it. He helped me a lot and I’d say Frank was probably the biggest influence for me when I was at City.

“I couldn’t thank him enough for that.

Frank had won everything there is to win in football and ultimately with young lads coming through he doesn’t really need to help me, he’s done his bit, he’s at the top of his level. He’s had a great career.

“So to go and make the effort and take the time to speak to me, that was massive for me as a young lad. To have someone like that, you take every little bit of information in and go to work as hard as possible to try to transfer it to the pitch.

“When you’ve got someone like that giving you advice what more can you ask for.”

Eagles boss Vieira was Evans’ manager with Manchester City’s Elite Development Squad and the pair won the Premier League International Cup in 2014-15.

It was Vieira’s passion and aggression that most struck Evans when he was learning his trade under the former Arsenal captain and Premier League, FA Cup and World Cup winner.

Vieira, 45, left City to coach New York City and then Nice, before taking over from Roy Hodgson at Palace last summer.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PAPE HABIB Guèye is on Millwall’s list of transfer targets – but no offer is imminent for the Senegalese striker.

Guèye has scored five goals in sixteen league games this season for K.V. Kortrijk in the top flight in Belgium.

A report this week claimed the Lions had a £1.5million bid for Guèye turned down, but the club have not made any offer for the player.

The report also said Watford were

interested in Guèye.

Millwall want to sign another attacker in January. Guèye joined the Belgian club from Aalesunds FK in Norway where he scored 25 goals in 55 games.

The Lions recalled forward Tyler Burey from Hartlepool United last week, but Isaac Olaofe is set to stay with Sutton United.

Olaofe, 22, has scored five goals in eighteen games for the League Two side this season.

“The likes of Isaac, the plan is to keep him out on loan at this moment in time,” Lions boss Gary Rowett said.

“Tyler’s come back to just give us an extra body to get through this little

period with Covid.

“He can do himself a little bit of good by training and potentially if he does get some involvement in the FA Cup game.

“Then the plan will be if we feel he needs more game-time ideally he goes back out to Hartlepool, but that’s going to be down to them, down to the player.

“But if we send him back out on loan that would be our first option because they’ve looked after him well, they know the player, he’s done well there.

“We want him to develop either way so it will be a decision on that in the next ten days.”

Meanwhile, George Long is set to replace Bartosz Bialkowski in goal against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Long, 28, joined on a free transfer from Hull City last summer and has made three appearances for the Lions in the EFL Cup. “We committed to Longy playing in these types of games anyway. He’s been brilliant behind the scenes, he’s trained fantastically well,” Rowett said.

“He’s waited patiently for an opportunity and I think in these types of games we’ve committed to helping him develop and give him game-time.

“I would be pretty keen to see Longy starting this game.”

Coops would take pen test EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk JAKE COOPER will be one of the first players to put his hand up to take a spot-kick if Millwall’s FA Cup third-round tie against Crystal Palace goes to penalties on Saturday.

Cooper missed the Lions’ last penalty in the quarter-final against Brighton in 2019 as the Premier League side went through 5-4 following a 2-2 draw.

This Saturday’s south London derby must be decided on the day after replays in the third and fourth round were scrapped to free up dates for postponed league games.

Cooper will step forward if Saturday’s tie goes all the way.

“Yeah, for sure,” Cooper said. “I was actually disappointed that day [against Brighton] I wasn’t in the top five. I would go for the top five all the time. I was in that sudden death period.

“My mentality when it comes to situations like that is no issue. I would put myself up there again.

“We haven’t seen a full house at The Den for a while, it must have been preCovid times.

“To experience that for me again and some of the players who haven’t experienced that is brilliant.

“We’re really looking forward to that and it will be a fantastic day for the club.

“After the weekend you almost want to step back into the league and turn the league form around.

“But it’s a great game to take us away from that, a big game like Crystal Palace at home, you don’t get them too often.

“For the fans and the whole club it’s going to be a massive day. It’s one we’re very much looking forward to.

“It will be nice to play against a different team from that next level above to test yourself.”
