Investigators detail the spats Cllr Pollak got into via his anonymous account with Robert Hutchinson and Lewis Schaffer, two prominent campaigners against infill social housing schemes in Southwark.

Mr Hutchinson runs the @BallcourtGarden Twitter account, which posts tweets largely against a proposed social housing development on Bermondsey’s Elim Estate. Mr Schaffer runs the @courtcampaign account, which coordinated a campaign against the sincescrapped Priory Court development in Nunhead.

As part of the process of resolving the dispute, Cllr Pollak sent apology letters to Mr Hutchinson and Mr Schaffer for his actions.

Contacted by the News for a response to the report, both Mr Hutchinson and Mr Schaffer called for Cllr Pollak to resign his position as a Southwark councillor.

Mr Hutchinson said: “Cllr Pollak has let down the people of Southwark who deserve better representation than this. Cllr Pollak should now do the honourable thing and resign as a councillor.”

The report found several mitigating factors for Cllr Pollak’s behaviour, including alleged threats made by Mr Schaffer against him and Victoria Mills, a fellow Labour councillor for Peckham Rye. Mr Schaffer said these were “extremely serious and false accusations”.

The report by an external law firm, seen by the News, found that Labour’s Cllr Pollak breached the code by acting anonymously through his @SouthwarkYIMBY Twitter account, while holding public office.

But he did not break the code of conduct in the content of his tweets, according to the report, which was commissioned by the council.

The report recommended that the council take no further action against Cllr Pollak, arguing that he had suffered enough. A Freedom of Information request revealed that he received a £4,881.10 ‘golden goodbye’ in April this year.

He is also still a Labour councillor for the south Bermondsey ward.

Investigators also recommended that no disciplinary hearing take place. A council spokesperson confirmed that no further action would be taken against Cllr Pollak.

The report lifts the lid on the dispute between Cllr Pollak – who as Southwark Council’s head of social housing and as @SouthwarkYIMBY was pushing for a huge number of new schemes to tackle the borough’s 16,000 person housing waiting list – and the campaigners trying to stop

LTN outrage in Dulwich

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk Residents in Dulwich, who earlier this year staged a thousandstrong protest in a bid to get the council to remove the Low Traffic Neighbourhood scheme (LTNs) in the area, were shocked to hear a decision had already been made to it permanent.

In a press release published on Christmas Eve, but not seen by the objectors, the council stated it’s “Dulwich Streetspace project is now finalised and being made permanent.”

An estimated 1,000 people converged on the main junction in Dulwich Village in October demanding the LTNs be removed after they were introduced in March 2020.

It followed a consultation in which two thirds of people asked for the system to be scrapped.

Cllr Leo Pollak opposition, did not go as far as calling for Cllr Pollak’s resignation from the council, but said it was “disappointing” that the report did not call for further action.

Cllr Pollak said: “Southwark residents should rightly expect [the] highest standards from their public representatives, and I am keen to restate my apology for using an unattributed twitter account. I set up the @southwarkyimby account long before I was a cabinet member, to help make the positive case for building new council homes and to promote model approaches to community engagement and development.

“However it was of course wrong not to be open that this account was run by me, and then to later use an unattributed account to

challenge what I perceived as misinformation about where and how we were looking to build council homes. I have apologised to the two people concerned.”

A council spokesperson said: “The council’s monitoring officer followed the correct procedure for investigating any complaint against a cabinet member.

“The Investigating Officer found that the actions taken voluntarily by Councillor Pollak – his apology, resignation as cabinet member and willingness to attend training – went over and above anything that could have been imposed upon him, and therefore it would not be a good use of public money to pursue this matter further.”

The Dulwich Alliance, which staged the protest, said this week they would not accept the decision and would fight to have what they called “this undemocratic, unwanted and unjust political decision overturned.”

In a statement to the News the Alliance wrote: “The Council’s own Equality Impact Assessment highlighted the problems the restrictions are causing vulnerable residents but the Council has callously turned its back on the very members of society it has a public duty to safeguard and who need its help the most.

“Its own air quality modelling report suggested that the impact of the scheme on pollution has been “negligible” and it has provided no evidence that the measures have improved safety or that any increase in walking or cycling has been as a consequence of the road closures.”

But the council says the scheme has seen a twelve per cent drop in traffic and a 60

per cent increase in cycling, part of their “responsibility to help residents’ live healthier lives.”

In the press release the council says the scheme “is designed to help tackle the climate emergency and make the borough’s air and streets, cleaner and safer. In order to achieve this, the council has changed the way it designs streets, giving more priority to walking, public transport, wheelchair use, children scooting, as well as cycling and access to local shops.”

The decision is now subject to a scrutiny period, which ends on Tuesday 4 January and the reports, monitoring data and correspondence, can be found on Southwark Council’s Dulwich Streetspace webpage. The council says once the decision has been made final, changes to the scheme will be made in early 2022. Residents will be updated on the timescales for when the changes will take place.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The trust that runs Guy's and St Thomas' says its hospitals are reducing 'non-essential services' in response to the rising number of Covid-19 cases.

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk The latest figures place Southwark third in the capital for Covid case rates in the week leading up to Christmas – and neighbouring Lambeth has the most.

For the week ending December 22 Southwark reported 8,547 cases, up 2,726. This is a rise of 46.8 per cent and means that like thirteen other boroughs in London more than one in 50 people are testing positive.

The top five boroughs for new cases were south of the river, with Lambeth recording 9,701 cases in that week alone, an increase of 41 per cent on the previous week. Wandsworth had the second highest with 9,453 cases and in fourth place is Croydon with 8,003 new cases. Croydon also saw the highest percentage increase of any London borough over the seven-day period, with a 79.2 per cent rise in cases.

Neighbouring Lewisham was fifth highest for case rates with 7,792 up 67.8 per cent.

But on a positive note these figures show the percentage increases are a great deal less than the previous week to December 17, suggesting that the Omicron wave is slowing in London.

What’s more in the days after December 22, when more than 28,000 cases were reported in London, daily cases in the capital have fallen steadily, with 4,420 reported on Boxing Day. NHS figures nationally reveal that England has the highest number of Covid-19 patients in hospital since March last year, at 8,474, as of 8am this Monday, December 27.

Four men plead not guilty to conspiracy to murder after Sasha Johnson shooting

The black equal rights activist was shot in the head while in a house party in Peckham on May 23.

The mother of two remains in a serious but stable condition after being rushed to hospital. She has undergone two operations to release pressure on her brain.

All four men have been remanded in custody, with the next hearing due to be held on February 21 2022.

The trial date has been set for March 7.

The trust, which runs Guy's, St Thomas' and Evelina London children's hospital as well as Royal Brompton and Harefield in west London, said urgent services are still running and people should still come for their appointments if they are already booked.

About ten per cent of Guy's and St Thomas' staff were off sick earlier this week. Across London, some 3,900 staff were off work because of Covid, according to official figures.

Guy's and St Thomas' had 75 people in hospital suffering from Covid-19 on December 14, the latest figures available - a big increase on the previous week. This figure may have risen further in the weeks since.

A spokesperson for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust said: “Our services remain open for those who have an urgent health need and if you have an appointment you should attend.

"In response to the rising number of Covid cases, we have taken the difficult decision to start to reduce some non-essential services, which is being looked at service by service, and the best way the public can help is to continue to come forward for their vaccine, including booster doses.”

Twenty-seven-year-old charged with murder of Jobari Gooden

By Kevin Quinn kevin@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham man charged with the murder of Jobari Gooden was due to appear before magistrates this week.

Twenty-seven-year-old Momodou Lamin Faal, of Lyndhurst Way, Peckham, was due to appear before Croydon Magistrates' Court on Monday, December 27.

He was arrested at a property in Gillingham, Kent, last Thursday (December 23).

Olushola Eletu, 39, (11/09/82) whose address was not confirmed, and Elishah Anderson, 39, of Lettsom Street, Peckham, face charges of perverting the course of justice.

Jobari Gooden, 27, is believed to have been attacked outside House of Ramish2 barber shop on Choumert Road in the middle of the afternoon at 3.15pm on Friday December 17.

He was found on Rye Lane with stab wounds, emergency services rushed to the scene following reports of a fight, but he died later in hospital.

Teen avoids jail despite trying to rob a doctor

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham man has avoided jail time for now, despite lunging at a doctor with a knife in an attempted robbery.

Enver Francis, 18 (pictured) from Peckham was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Monday, December 20, to 24 months in prison, suspended for two years, for attempted robbery, six months suspended for two years for possession of an offensive weapon, and 24 months suspended for two years for possession of counterfeit currency with intent.

The three sentences will run at the same time. He was also told to pay the victim £156 in compensation.

Francis pleaded guilty to the three crimes on May 27 this year.

It came after he contacted the victim, an NHS doctor in his 20s, when the doctor posted a Playstation 5 games console for sale on an online marketplace.

They agreed to meet at the Whittington Hospital in Archway, north London. Francis was asked to wait in a communal area while the victim fetched the games console.

The doctor kept the Playstation behind a door

protected with an electric key fob so he could check the money before handing it over.

When asked to show the money, Francis grabbed for the doctor’s lanyard, punched him in the ribs, pulled out a hunting knife and lunged at the victim’s chest.

Luckily, the doctor managed to dodge out of the way of the knife attack. A woman arrived and the doctor asked her to call security.

Francis ran away, chased by security, who found his hunting knife. He was caught on CCTV and police from the local robbery squad arrested him within days at home. Officers also found more than £1,000 in fake currency during a search.

‘In-filling’ became the big debate in southwark in 2021

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The 16,200 people on Southwark’s council home waiting list need somewhere to go. The council is determined to house them properly.

But where, in a borough that can sometimes feel so crowded? This was among the biggest questions we reported on this year.

The so-called ‘infill’ programme is part of the council’s answer - building new blocks on estates that already exist. But hundreds of people have marched and signed petitions against the new blocks, arguing that they will suffer loss of light, privacy and open space.

About 30 estates in Southwark so far have ‘infill’ plans as defined by the council. In September, we created a

map that highlighted 53 sites with infill, rooftop extensions, garage conversions slated for estates across Southwark, the vast majority of which are currently in consultation phases with residents.

Anti-infill activists have often called on the council to focus on requisitioning empty homes to help meet its housing targets.

Although a growing problem in the borough - the number of empty homes rose from 523 in 2019 to more than 3,600 in 2020 - bringing every empty home back into use would only scratch the surface of the council housing shortage, as we reported in April.

Right to Buy and the skyrocketing cost of land in London present more problems.

Southwark has no control over the Right to Buy policy, which was brought in under Margaret Thatcher and allows people

to buy their own council homes at a knockdown price.

The cost of land means often the council is priced out of building on areas that it does not already own. One plot on Ilderton Road was given an existing use value of £1.8m and then put on the market for a staggering £15m.

One of the key complaints from antiinfill activists that we reported on time and again this year was that consultation by the council about new schemes was ineffective. The council has always maintained that proper consultation has taken place.

A side issue that grabbed headlines this year was the resignation in February of the council’s cabinet member for council housing, Leo Pollak. Cllr Pollak was found to have been running an anonymous Twitter account that posted in favour

of the council’s own schemes and got into arguments with anti-infill activists.

Cllr Pollak apologised. An independent investigation found that he had broken the council’s code of conduct but recommended no further action be taken.

London mayor Sadiq Khan gave a strong show of support to Southwark’s infill policy in an interview with the News in December.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle refused to give an outright answer when asked in September, arguing that “each building and site are different”.

He was broadly supportive of the policy, adding “in some cases it needs tweaking but overall I think the public do support it.”

His fellow Southwark MPs Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes did not reply to repeated requests for comment.

The council is set to meet its target of

2,500 homes finished or being built by May 2022, when the next local elections take place.

The Liberal Democrats have been critical of the infill policy so it appears likely that if they were to get in power for the first time since 2010, council housing plans could change.

Whatever happens, it is important not to lose sight of the human side of the story.

Living in crowded, inadequate housing is a terrible hardship that can have myriad knock-on effects on the rest of people’s lives. Current Southwark social housing chief Stephanie Cryan told us in September that she felt a moral duty to get people in the borough housed properly.

And people also have a right to be heard - and listened to - when they express their opinion about plans to build on their estates.

The family and other leaseholders in Oyster Court are still waiting for clarification on how they are expected to fund the eye-watering bill, with a key problem being the lack of government clarity. These families face possibly losing their homes.

However, when the 2021 Budget was announced in November, there was no help for leaseholders to be seen, leaving families with eye-watering bills and health concerns hanging over their heads for months.

The families of Oyster Court are not alone. Figures in February 2021 found that nearly 30,000 people are living in homes with dangerous cladding across Southwark and Lambeth - 16,982 of which are in Southwark.

The council has also been feeling the effects of the scandal, with a proposed new fire safety law in November requiring them to fork out £18 million to review their own high rise blocks.

It is a testament to the devastation of the Grenfell and Lakanal disasters that we are still feeling their effects today, and it is unclear when the borough and London as a whole will be able to say with surety that its families are safe - both from fire, and financial ruin.

This has been the frightening question for so many in Southwark after the twin disasters of the Grenfell and Lakanal fires.

An October report found that Southwark has the most “waking watches” for fire safety concerns out of any borough in the city, with 71 buildings requiring the service.

The efforts to resolve this issue, though, is also devastating for families, as many leaseholders have been told they will have to foot the bill for the remedial works to make their homes safe.

A family in Bermondsey (pictured left) caught up in the cladding scandal told the News they had become reliant on food banks and Universal Credit to help pay their mortgage, with no end in sight for their housing nightmare despite billions of new funding to make high rise blocks safe. Their story was then aired on BBC’s Panorama.

For one family of six in Walworth, their bill hit £85,000 - a number that has only gotten larger as they have been told even more works are necessary. The bill for their block in total came to £2.6 million.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Unsurprisingly, Covid-19 continued to be one of the biggest stories in Southwark this year. We ended the year as one of the London boroughs with the highest numbers of new Covid cases, just behind Lambeth and Wandsworth.

Just as at the end of last year there were concerns of hospitals being overwhelmed as new cases mounted and NHS staff went off sick with the virus in large numbers.

Southwark largely reflected the pandemic in the country as a whole.

The year started off badly, with more people dying after testing positive in the borough for Covid in January 2021 than the previous eight and a half months. Cases and deaths gradually tailed off as the latest lockdown and the vaccine drive began to take effect.

Covid-19 infections rose again in the summer as the UK opened up, with the News reporting a “race” to get everyone double-jabbed. Among many vaccine centres in the borough, the Den put on a huge walk-in vaccine clinic in July for all adults in south-east London. Gradually, cases died down again until winter, with the recent emergence of the new

Omicron variant.

But Omicron was thought to cause less of a serious illness than earlier strains of the virus, especially for people who have had their booster jab. More than 100,000 people had had their booster in Southwark by the end of the year.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ gave their first Covid-19 vaccine on December 8 2020, and a year later had given out more than 775,000 jabs to over 450,000 people - enough to fill Millwall stadium the Den 22 times over. About one in every eighteen jabs in the capital were given in the NHS trust’s six vaccine centres.

As last year, alongside the tragic illness and death caused by the virus there were uplifting stories of people helping each other out.

From the Lions Food Hub set up by Millwall women’s goalkeeper Kelly Webster, to a fundraiser launched by nightclub Ministry of Sound to pay for care for DJ Steve Laviniere, left paralysed by Covid-19, the pages of the News were full of stories of the community coming together to support people made worse off by the pandemic.

And after last year’s virtual service, Albin’s put on its traditional Christmas memorial again in December for the 22nd year, attended in person by about 1,000 people.

COVID FOCUS: SE5 bishop denies 'Coronavirus plague protection kit fraud' in Crown court

Dr Climate Wiseman, who heads up the Kingdom Church, appeared at Inner London Crown Court on September 13 accused of a single charge of fraud and two charges under Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations between March 23 and 24.

He arrived dressed in a white bishop’s robe adorned with gold crosses and a crucifix, flanked by supporters carrying banners and placards in support of the ‘prophet’.

It is alleged that during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 46-yearold had sold oil and a piece of string, for £91, marketed as ‘Divine Cleansing Oil’ or ‘Divine Plague Prevention Kit’ both in person and online via ‘Bishop Climate Ministries’.

His defence argued he should be free to practise his religion, and told the judge that Dr Wiseman was not an ‘anti-vaxxer’ and had, in fact, been double jabbed.

The same day, his supporters and members of the congregation descended on Tooley Street to protest outside the local authority’s headquarters against perceived attacks from Southwark Council, whose trading standards team had kickstarted the criminal investigation after an investigation by this newspaper.

Dressed in matching red t-shirts, the demonstrators held banners and placards declaring: “Southwark Labour councillors are anti-christ and faith haters”, ‘Bishop Climate is the true prophet”, “we need freedom of faith”, and “there is healing power in divine cleansing oil”.

The preacher has been released on unconditional bail, with a trial due to begin at the same court in July 2022.

COVID FOCUS: Piers Corbyn arrested over leaflets which appeared to compare vaccines to the Holocaust

Police had been urged to investigate the leaflets after they were posted through letterboxes in Southwark and Lambeth.

Seventy-three-year-old Corbyn, the elder brother of former Labour leader, Jeremy, denied that the leaflets - which mocked up Auschwitz’s gates with the slogan ‘Vaccines are safe path to freedom’ - were antisemitic.

He said: “The idea we’re antisemitic in any way is completely absurd.

“I was married for 22 years to a

for peeling off stickers telling people to wear masks from Tube trains. He even stood for the Mayor of London on an anti-lockdown, anti-low traffic neighbourhood platform, coming eleventh out of twenty candidates and gaining 0.8 per cent of the vote.

the early hours of Sunday, February 28. The police chased two robbery suspects to the address and found around 30 people breaking lockdown rules. The officers were subsequently

injured in the ruckus that followed.

One was knocked unconscious and another suffered a fractured hand.

It emerged that the property was being used to store stolen goods after a spate of robberies, including mobile phones, oyster cards, and credit cards.

A number of violent muggings also took place in the surrounding area and, in a particularly serious incident, police were called to a double stabbing near East Street on March 5.

At the same time in Bermondsey, Camberwell and Peckham the News reported on tenants freezing in their homes as the council’s district heating networks failed.

By September the council announced that annual district heating costs were set to rise fivefold in just four years to £25 million in a bid to bring the heating and hot water up to scratch.

There are more than 100 heat networks serving 17,000 properties across the council’s overall stock of around 55,000 homes.

Although designed to keep costs low due to bulk purchasing and reduced running costs, in reality many of the networks are over 40 years old and in some cases well beyond their lifespan.

Lockdown nightmares: illegal raves, criminal gangs and freezing cold flats

On Walworth’s sprawling Aylesbury Estate criminals were terrorising residents with antisocial behaviour in boarded up, vacant properties that police and the council were struggling to secure as the country came out of its third national lockdown.

Many residents, including those suffering long-standing heating and hot water outages and leaks in their homes, were increasingly frustrated by what they said was too little action from Southwark Council and the Met to make the area safe.

As the regeneration on the estate continued apace, and more of the estate was dominated by the huge construction site, the tenants who

remained said they were becoming increasingly fearful.

One claimed vacant properties in blocks in the low rises were still being broken into and taken over by

squatters and ravers because they were inadequately secured by police.

Battle lines drawn over divisive low traffic neighbourhood scheme

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk A four year campaign from group Up the Elephant did not prevent the demolition of the Elephant and Castle shopping centre as planned, but achieved significant gains this year regardless.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk The divisive introduction of lowtraffic-neighbourhoods in July 2020 continued into 2021, with a year of protests, celebrations, and even an attack on a café.

The huge changes were put in place

by Southwark Council, but came as a government directive and were soon all over London – pitting local authorities who disagreed with their neighbour’s layouts against each other.

Some of the most vocal opposition came from traders who were struggling to survive the financial devastation wrought by the pandemic, including Melbourne Grove traders in East Dulwich and shopkeepers around Walworth.

One protest this year reached over a thousand people, and further had

their numbers bolstered by the elderly and movement-impaired who felt their needs had been ignored by the new directive.

This group argued that they were being prevented from the equipment they sorely needed to attend doctor’s appointments and maintain a social life, and took to the council offices to fight their cause this December.

However, it was not all peaceful protests. In one egregious instance of LTN kickback, two moped drivers spent their Sunday morning attacking a café on Calton Avenue after they were told they couldn’t drive down the street.

Luckily no one was seriously harmed in the attack - but it highlighted just how incendiary the issue had become.

For some in Dulwich, though, LTNs were not the awful imposition from the council that so many protested they

were. Community group Mums for Lungs celebrated the drop in traffic with a tree adorned in teddy bears with exposed lungs to highlight the benefits to children of reducing pollution.

As seems to be common among local government policy, however, the issue for many lay not in the concept of LTNs themselves, but rather in the way they were implemented - and, particularly, in the way the people had been consulted on the topic.

In many of the protests, a consistent theme has not been removing LTNs altogether, but accounting for those who cannot adapt so easily to them, as well as making alternative green transport cheaper.

And on Christmas Eve, Dulwich residents were shocked to discover LTNs were likely to become permanent - see page 2.

They managed to guarantee 116 social rented homes in the regeneration project, where there had been none.

They also secured a promise for new locations for displaced traders although this issue has continued to be

a source of controversy.

Latin Elephant, who represent the traders, stated in November this year that there are roughly 40 traders still without premises, more than a year on from the demolition, and that the £634,700 relocation fund that was guaranteed for them in the agreement is not enough.

Consistent throughout protests against the regeneration has been the sense that the area is losing part of its soul to developer Delancey. Many traders say that the their old shop wasn’t just a location - it was part of the soul of Elephant and Castle.

What of the Bakerloo Extension?

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk The long-awaited Bakerloo Line extension was thrown in the long-grass in August as a Transport for London (TfL) board member said it was unlikely to happen in her lifetime.

The extension, which if built would run from its current terminus at Elephant & Castle south-east to Lewisham via the Old Kent Road area, has been in the works for about

twenty years. But Covid-19 has taken a heavy toll on TfL’s finances and the extension has been put on hold as part of the agency’s funding agreement with the government.

TFL also admitted that it could not finance improvements to current station at Elephant & Castle, prompting the Lib Dems to call for a tram along the Old Kent Road.

However Council leader Kieron Williams said they would push ahead with station revamp and would only commit to not ‘ruling out’ a tram.

Voters in Southwark helped re-elect Sadiq Khan as London Mayor

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Labour’s incumbent Sadiq Khan won this year’s mayoral election in a run-off with the Conservatives’ Shaun Bailey, securing himself a second term in office.

The election, delayed by a year due to Covid, went to a run-off after neither of the leading candidates got a clear majority of 50 per cent or more in the first round. Khan ended up with 55.2 per cent of the vote in the run off, winning with a clear majority of 228,000 in the end.

The Green Party’s Sian Berry came third, while the Lib Dems’ Luisa Porritt trailed home in fourth, losing her deposit.

Like the rest of the capital, Southwark residents tended to vote for Khan, with 51 per cent of votes in the borough going to the Labour candidate.

Some 20 candidates entered the running for the mayoral race in 2021, more than in any other year.

Candidates with a Southwark connection included the Walworthbased lockdown sceptic Piers Corbyn and Steve Kelleher, who grew up on the Rockingham Estate in Elephant and Castle.

All candidates agreed on the urgent need for more housing that ordinary Londoners can afford, with varying methods suggested for achieving this.

A recurring theme was converting brownfield sites into housing.

Answers on the question of knife crime varied from putting more ‘bobbies on the beat’ to tackling the root social causes of crime, to getting police to stop taking the knee.

Asked what they made of the borough’s controversial low traffic neighbourhoods brought in in 2020, candidates’ answers ranged from highly supportive to critical of the level of consultation carried out before the schemes were introduced.

Solutions for Southwark’s high

streets, ailing in the pandemic, included lowering rents for small businesses, introducing business rates holidays and making buses and the Tube free to use for six months to get people out again.

Asked what transport options they would offer in place of the shelved Bakerloo Line extension, candidates said they would put in more TfL bikes, set up an infrastructure bank to get investment into London transport and bring in more electric buses, among other ideas.

As well as the mayoral election, Southwark and Lambeth’s London Assembly seat stayed Labour, with Marina Ahmad replacing Florence Eshalomi, now the MP for Vauxhall.

New species of shrimp found after ‘hitchhiking’ on ocean rock to Horniman Museum

Sixteen pies and mash in just 20 minutes

After setting a world record of eating a staggering eighteen pies and seven portions of mash in less than an hour, the champion Max Stanford turn up again at Bermondsey’s legendary Manze’s.

Competition tables were taped off and laid out with napkins, cutlery and water in readiness for a contest to see who could eat the most pies and mash in 20 minutes in September.

It was no contest: sixteen pies and mash in 20 minutes. Max saw off three other contenders who only managed six pies and two mash, eight pies and 3.5 mash and eight pies and 3.75 mash.

A new species of shrimp was named at the Horniman Museum in March after being discovered in its aquarium tanks.

The Dulwich museum responded to a call out to submit samples as part of the research into different species, whereupon the biologist discovered they were an entirely new variety.

The shrimp live in all the museum’s aquarium tanks, is believed they started out as one hitchhiker brought over on an ocean rock many years ago to the South Circular from the Caribbean.

Since then it has been breeding away while also being a food source for other fish and aquatic life.

Screen burn: ‘Woke’ row over virtual bonfire in Dulwich Dulwich Sports Club hit back after being accused of planning to create a “woke” bonfire night.

This year the sports club announced its intention to forego the traditional bonfire for this year’s Guy Fawkes’ festivities, and instead use a large screen to show the image of a bonfire.

This decision was soon picked up as an unnecessary effort to appeal to climate change activists.

But the club said the reason was that planning for bonfire night starts in the spring - which this year took place during lockdown.

Stonemasons discover that Alfred the Great statue is half ancient Roman goddess

A Southwark statue considered to be the oldest outdoor statue in the capital was found to date back further than previously thought - all the way back to Roman times.

The bottom half of the Alfred the Great statue in Trinity Church Square was discovered by conservationists to likely date back to the 2nd century, around the reign of Hadrian.

The lower half of Alfred the Great is now thought to be part of a colossal ancient sculpture dedicated to the goddess Minerva.

Southbank aquarium names baby penguins after Emma Raducanu and vaccine leader Dame Sarah Gilbert

Sea Life London Aquarium has chosen Raducanu and Gilbert as the names for its two female Gentoo chicks, which were born earlier this year, in a ‘fitting tribute’ to two British heroines of 2021.

It took until September to establish the sex of the penguin chicks.

Bromley-born Emma Raducanu won the US Open at the age of just eighteen earlier this year, while Dame Sarah Gilbert was in charge of the team that developed the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

As in every year, several Southwark residents’ lives were cut short through violence in 2021.

Twenty-two-year-old Lavaun Witter, from Peckham, was fatally stabbed outside a block of flats on Wisbeach Road in Croydon on February 5.

In a moving tribute, Lavaun’s family said the aspiring computer engineer known as ‘Lavz’ was “destined for greatness” and “wanted to fly high”. Four men have been charged with his murder.

Beatrice Stoica, 36, was found critically injured with stab wounds on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich on July 23. She died in hospital. Her husband Stony Stoica has been charged with her murder.

A post-mortem found the cause of death to have been a gunshot wound to the leg.

Not long after the year began, we reported on the death of Second World War veteran Albert Holmshaw, known as Bert, aged 96. Born in Sheffield, the Yorkshireman moved to Peckham in 2018 to live with his daughter Janet, and soon got actively involved in Southwark life.

His daughters, Janet Holmshaw and Christine Orton, said: “Our dad was a real gentleman, a good and loyal husband, a caring father, grandfather and great grandfather. He will be sadly and greatly missed.”

On February 5, former Southwark Mayor Denise Capstick died of brain cancer. Denise had been a Liberal Democrat councillor for the Bricklayers and Grange wards. Before that, she was a major in the army for 30 years, and served as a nurse and matron in

hospitals across the country including Guy’s and St Thomas’.

We reported on her Southwark Cathedral memorial service in June.

Her fellow former councillor and best friend Lorraine Zuleta, paid tribute: “She was a bundle of energy and fun, generous, hardworking and courageous, a passionate woman. She served her country, her borough and her community with great enthusiasm and joy.”

In April, we lost two very young members of the Southwark community to the Thames. Zaheid Ali, a 13-yearold student at Ark Globe Academy near Elephant and Castle, tragically died after ‘jumping’ into the Thames from Tower Bridge, according to a recent inquest.

Later that same week, in the early hours of April 24, Folajimi OlubunmiAdewole, a 20-year-old man from the Neckinger Estate in Bermondsey, died after jumping into the River Thames to

help a woman in the water.

Speaking to the News in the aftermath of his death, Jimi’s mother Olusankami Adewole called their son “a special, loving young man.” She told the News: “He was a very good person and had a very good heart.” Hundreds of people attended a memorial service for Jimi in Spa Gardens.

We lost one of our own in September, reporting on the death of former Southwark News deputy editor and head of ITV News Geoff Hill, aged just 52. He died of leukaemia on September 16, surrounded by his family. Former local MP Simon Hughes, who knew Geoff well, described his death as “an irreplaceable loss of a south London star.”

Another former Southwark mayor died on October 12. Bill Skelly, former Camberwell and Peckham councillor passed away aged 89 after a short illness. A former film set decorator and trade unionist, he was described

Lavaun Witter as “radical and innovative” but also “serene and peaceful” by his friend, the Labour councillor Ian Wingfield.

On November 1, “kind and generous” man Christopher Connolly, who grew up near the Blue, tragically died suddenly and unexpectedly after suffering a heart problem. He left behind his fiancée Jenny, three-yearold daughter Nova and six-month-old baby Lyra.

His mother Karen said: “Everyone loved him – his smile would light up a room… He was a Bermondsey boy, he was a cockney,” she said. “Pie and mash and liquor – that was him”.

The borough was shocked in December by the news that Evelina London children’s nursing assistant Petra Srncova had disappeared.

Tragically, the Czech-born Camberwell resident’s body was later found in Brunswick Park near her home. Police said that they did not think anyone else was involved in her death.

Restaurant manager Ian Gualavisi, 23, was stabbed to death on Maldonado Walk in Elephant and Castle on December 14.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at about 7.45 that evening and found Mr Gualavisi with a back wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crime.

No one has been arrested in connection with the killing yet.

Officers believe the attack came from two men on a moped who sped away towards Elephant and Castle train station.

Jobari Gooden

Jobari Gooden, 27, died after being stabbed in Peckham. He is believed to have been attacked outside House of Ramish 2 barber shop on Choumert Road on December 17.

One local man has been charged with his murder and two others have been charged with perverting the course of justice.

medal success: BMX champ put Peckham on the map

We saw locals in Tokyo in both the Olympics and Paralympics

Several Southwark residents picked up medals at the delayed Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics this summer.

Peckham BMX’s Kye Whyte took home the silver medal after a close contest with the Dutchman Niek Kimmann. After a joyful homecoming for Kye at the Prince of Peckham pub, coach CK Flash said numbers at the Burgess Park-based BMX club were up 40 per cent.

The coach added: “Kids can see it’s a way out – they look at Kye and see he’s making a living from it. It’s not just kids from Peckham that are looking to Kye, it’s all over.”

Kye said that much of his success was due to the hours he put in at the £1.2m Burgess Park track, which was paid for in part by Southwark’s 2012 Olympic Legacy Fund.

The track was launched in 2013 and since then the council has allowed the

Peckham BMX Club free use of the track, while continuing to maintain it fully, meaning coaches do not have to worry about utility fees or having to pay to keep the track up.

Elsewhere at the Olympics, Kye’s

fellow Peckham resident Imani-Lara Lansiquot won bronze in the 4x100m relay alongside London sprinters Dina Asher-Smith, Daryll Neita and Asha Philip.

Imani-Lara said: “We are just four

ordinary girls from London with big dreams. If you can see it you can be it.

Speechless right now.”

In the Paralympics, East Dulwich man Columba Blango also came home from Tokyo with a bronze medal in the

T20 400 metres category, for people with intellectual disabilities.

Columba, 29, finished with a personal best of 47.81. Speaking to the News after the games, he said he was going back to his day job in the Peckham Primark.

“Nothing has changed, I’m still my humble self,” he said. “I’m not someone who changes. I’m always humble, I’m always grounded. Change [like winning medals] doesn’t affect me.

“I usually use my Christian faith to keep me grounded. I grew up in a Christian household, the number one household rule is to be humble. Be the person you are because that will allow you to express yourself in full.”

Even though England ultimately lost, the feel-good atmosphere the team created on their journey to the final meant that people wanted to celebrate and commemorate their efforts - and the way the young players carried themselves on and off the pitch.

Camberwell’s Jadon Sancho was awarded the freedom of Southwark - the highest civic award the council can give - for the part he played in England’s strong performance. Mayor Barrie Hargrove went so far as to call him “a diamond in Southwark’s crown”, while council leader Kieron Williams said he was “an incredible role model to our young people” and “one of the best sportspeople this country has”.

In Vinegar Yards by London Bridge station, a mural commissioned by London mayor Sadiq Khan was unveiled

to celebrate England captain Harry Kane, star forward Raheem Sterling and manager Gareth Southgate.

The mural, painted by street art group Murwalls, was intended as a tribute to the entire team and the leadership of Southgate. “On and off the field, he and his players are true role models for young Londoners,” Murwalls founder Marc Silver said.

Sadly, not everyone reacted with the same sense of pride to England’s performance. After the team lost, the three young black players who missed penalties in the shootout were subjected to vile racist abuse - including Camberwell’s Sancho.

Bradford Pretty, 49, of Folkestone in Kent, posted a video of himself on his Facebook account after the final where he made racist slurs about Sancho, Bukayo Saka and Marcus Rashford and was sentenced to 200 hours of unpaid work and 50 days in custody suspended for twelve months. He was also fined £85.

Sancho said in the aftermath of the final in July that the abuse was “nothing new”. He added in a social media post: “As a society, we need to do better and hold these people accountable. Hate will never win.” He also thanked fans for “the positive messages and love and support that far outweighed the negative.”

There was also much milder controversy during the tournament after the council told a family on the Brandon Estate in Camberwell to take down some tiny England flags because they were a fire risk. They were later allowed to put them back up.

Elsewhere, there were complaints about the Potters Fields Park fan zone by Tower Bridge not showing England games, because it was meant to be family friendly.

Some local residents were unhappy with the implication that England fans could not be part of a family atmosphere.

Highs and lows of Euro 2020 played out in Southwark England’s most patriotic estate in Bermondsey came up trumps again

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark was gripped with football fever over the summer as England made their way to the final of Euro 2020, only for the nation’s hopes to be dashed in the final by Italy.

Despite the sad ending, the News covered plenty of good times along the way, including the residents of the Kirby Estate in Bermondsey decking out their homes in England flags yet again. The Kirby Estate’s full-on display of patriotism even made the front page of the June 10 edition.

The display, which was the Kirby’s biggest yet, took four days to put up, according to the ‘three musketeers’ who organised the flags. But this year, more than ever, the sense of community the display brought out was vital, residents said.

“It’s obviously been a tough year for everyone and people have sometimes kept to themselves but it’s amazing, as soon as you get the flags up it makes such a big difference,” said Chris Dowse, who helped organise the flags. “Suddenly people are out and talking to each other, you see the barbecues getting going – it’s great.”

Kirby Estate residents also showed a classy touch when tragedy almost struck for Danish playmaker Christian Eriksen, with Chris and others wearing t-shirts wishing him a speedy recovery.

Pearly King: I almost paid a visit to the pearly gates At the start of the year in January the Pearly King of Bermondsey spoke out after battling for his life with coronavirus - to urge the public to follow the rules.

Jimmy Jukes, 65, is known for being the ‘Pearly King’ of Bermondsey and Camberwell, alongside running UK Homes 4 Heroes, a charity which helps feed homeless ex-service personnel.

Speaking to the News after being discharged from hospital, Mr Jukes told of his fear as he lay breathless on his hospital bed - and said he wanted to warn others against taking risks with the disease.

“The first 24 hours, it was touch and go with me, it was so scary,” he said.

“You wouldn’t wish it on your worst enemy.

“But when you go to the supermarket, they put the arrows down to go one way and you still see some prat walking the wrong way without a mask on.

“I just don’t want anyone to get in unnecessarily. I know people are social animals, but this is a pandemic. It’s better to take care now than lose your friends and family and never be able to see them again.”

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents begun a new litter-picking campaign, in an effort to clear the streets of rubbish as the country emerged from lockdown.

The Litterati, who began picking up rubbish over Easter, meet every week.

The group covered areas including Stave Hill Ecological Park, Page’s Walk, the cycle path near Millwall stadium the Den and Surrey Canal Road. But during the year they expanded and

took on more volunteers.

Group members say they are happy to volunteer to help clean up their neighbourhoods, but they shouldn’t have to do it.

“When it’s windy things just fly everywhere,” said group member Rachel Bentley. “And when people see rubbish lying around they feel like they can just drop their own rubbish on the floor. Once norms start to slip then things can get out of control.”

Utter shock after memorial is set alight The memorial to the war dead of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe was vandalised in August – with someone appearing to have set fire to a wreath it in the early hours of the morning.

The West Lane monument, which commemorates the sacrifice of local people in both world wars, was unveiled in 1921 and is Grade II-listed. Police said they are open-minded about the motivation for the crime, but there was nothing to indicate any element of racial or cultural motivation.

The shocking act of vandalism has been reported to Southwark Council by local residents and was cleaned the same day by council workers.

Days later dozens of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents gathered for two minutes' Gary Magold, who helps organises memorial services at the monument every

year, said he believed it was the first time the war memorial has been vandalised in its 100-year history.

"Back in 1921, [Peek Freans owner] Arthur Carr, one of the big movers and shakers in getting the monument put up, said to all the assembled people that it’s down to you and protect it and make sure that it's not desecrated.

"It's interesting because even then there was the worry about vandalism. But you had people who were angry and upset that they’d lost their uncles, cousins, brothers, sons."

"It’s such a shame that somebody has decided to do that. If it’s done for a specific reason, you aren’t gonna get your cause furthered by doing that, you're only going to anger people."

No arrests have been made and the investigation continues.

Squirrel goes nuts in branch of Halifax Halifax in Surrey Quays was shut down today in October after a squirrel "left the branch in a bit of a mess".

A spokesperson for Halifax told the News: “Our colleagues were surprised to discover a squirrel in the branch on Monday morning, after the tiny trespasser had made its way into the building over the weekend.

Seven charities and community groups based in Burgess Park’s soon-to-be redeveloped Giraffe House - including those who are part of the council’s own summer holiday provision - were left dismayed after being left in the dark over their future as their eviction notice loomed in September.

The site, was due to be knocked down as part of the council’s plans for a skate bowl.

Southwark is as rich and vibrant a community as ever it was - even during a global pandemic It would be easy to look back on 2021 and think that the only thing that had happened was Covid. As with 2020, it dominated our lives, affected families, work, school, holidays. And just as we started to believe that we had turned a corner, a new variant emerged that made Christmas feel we’d stepped back in time a year.

Yet we would be wrong to think this - and reading our review of the year in this issue really brings home just how much continues to happen, in spite of us all living through a global pandemic.

Whether it be the contentious infill policy that seeks to create desperately-needed social housing, but on often cherished open space, or the divisive Low Traffic neighbourhood zones that can seemingly pit one road of residents against another, the hard work of our young Southwark residents in their exams - achieving so much in spite of the disruptions Covid has wrought on their education - or the efforts of our local football club Millwall to climb the Championship table and even to function without fans for much of the year - life continues as richly as ever before.

At the start of the pandemic, we launched our Southwark Angels pages, which were originally intended to show our readers the work that was being done in our community during the crisis.

But we have kept these pages going, in order to highlight the amazing things that take place in Southwark - whether they are Covid-related or not.

This coming year will see local elections and we have exciting plans on how to cover these - watch this space. We continue to believe that local politicians work to improve the lives of ordinary people, in spite of inevitable mistakes and sometimes misguided policies. And we will work to bring you all of the candidates’ views, in order that you can make an informed decision about how to cast your vote on this most important of democratic processes.

Covid cancels Hamlet Christmas

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BOTH OF Dulwich Hamlet’s National League South fixtures over the Christmas period were postponed due to positive Covid-19 cases at Champion Hill.

The Hamlet were due to travel to Welling United on Boxing Day and host Dorking Wanderers on Tuesday.

Seven of the ten games in the league

went ahead on Tuesday after six of the ten fixtures were played on Boxing Day. The Hamlet’s next scheduled game is at home to Welling on January 2.

Gavin Rose’s side are sixth in the table, with one game in hand on the three sides directly above them and two in hand on the top two teams.

Meanwhile, the club’s annual fundraiser has raised £500 for King’s Hospital.

Mary Phillip’s side are one point ahead of Red Velvet, though they have played four games more. The Menace have 38 points after seventeen matches.

The visitors went in front in the thirteenth minute when Tidian Barry fired home.

Peckham added to their lead early in the second half as Joshua Montella drove home the rebound after his initial shot had been saved.

The Menace refused to let up and extended their advantage when Kieran Dowding went down the right and his shot was parried to David Gabor who made no mistake.

Phillip’s team saw out the game with ease to end 2021 top of the pile, albeit with those extra four games played.

Ahmed Geele, Peckham’s assistant manager, was asked for his assessment after the win.

“It was a good game, and we played very well. First half we went 1-0 up and were pretty comfortable. The boys did the job and kept everything simple.

“We then just saw it out towards the

end against ten men. Very proud of the performance, all thirteen players that took part played very well.”

Peckham’s next game is at home to Otford United on January 8.

By John Kelly SURREY’S CHRIS Jordan, Jason Roy and Reece Topley have been named in the England squad for the five-match T20I series with West Indies at the end of January.

Sam and Tom Curran miss out through back injuries that forced them to withdraw from the IPL and BBL since the end of the 2021 English domestic season.

Jordan has just completed a five-game contract with Sydney Sixers while Reece Topley is currently with Melbourne Renegades.

Roy enjoyed a strong T20 World Cup last month before a calf injury forced him to return to the UK where has been in rehabilitation.

Paul Collingwood will be the head coach for the five-match series which will be played in Barbados from January 22-30. Marcus Trescothick will join the squad as an assistant coach.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GEORGE EVANS admitted he had a “tough” time over Christmas after testing positive for Covid-19 and having to isolate.

Evans only had mild symptoms but he had planned to have family down over the festive period including to go to The Den to watch the Boxing Day clash against Swansea.

But the game was postponed and Sheffield-born Evans couldn’t have family at his home in south London.

Evans came out of isolation this week but had no group training behind him ahead of the game against Coventry City on Wednesday night.

“I had a little bit of a cough but nothing too bad. Just a cough at night. There were a few symptoms but it was more just frustrating than anything,” Evans told the News on Tuesday.

“It’s tough [training at home], it’s not the same.

“When you come out of training for a bit you do lose that sharpness, it’s just

then trying to get that back as quickly as possible.

“It’s not been too long and I’m feeling good now so I can get some extra sessions in and get back up to speed again very quickly, hopefully.

“I had Christmas on my own which is never nice. It couldn’t have come at a worse time. My mum, dad, and brother were going to come to the game on Boxing Day, they were looking forward to it.

There’s usually a full house there as well on Boxing Day. “It’s frustrating, tough, you’re on your own and have a lot of time to reflect on football and things. Ultimately you just want to play but it is what it is at the moment. I’m just glad I’m back available now and feeling good.

“There’s a lot of Covid going around in lots of teams, you look at the pictures from Boxing Day and there weren’t many games on.

“I’ve come out of it now but to go and play a game, you like to think in your head you can do it, but obviously the sports scientists could say something different.

“As players and a club we all want the games on, it’s just about managing

the players. I don’t personally know the implication and risk of it all but I’m guessing that if you’ve not been training all week then it’s not ideal preparation going and playing a game.

“It’s just such a weird subject, I don’t know what the answers are. I’ve got no idea, it’s way above my head. Obviously you just want to play if you feel fit and ready to do so. But we know it’s not quite always within your control.

“It affects your lungs and things like that but it affects people differently. Not too many people know much about it, some people can really suffer with it and some can be asymptomatic. It’s a strange one and an unknown what’s the best way around it for some people.

“That’s why it’s hard to manage people the same as it affects everyone differently.

It seems very contagious and is something that’s quite serious but you just hope if you get it you’re not too ill when you do.

“It’s more the fact seeing your family, if you’re carrying it without knowing because you’re young and fit you’re usually all right, but if you do pass it on to certain people even more vulnerable then it’s not something you want to have on

your shoulders, really.”

The added frustration for Millwall’s players was being denied a quick chance to make up for the 2-1 defeat to Peterborough on December 11.

That was arguably their poorest performance of the season. Gary Rowett’s side haven’t earned consecutive league wins since October.

Evans has also claimed a regular spot in the team and got his first goal of the season in the 3-1 win over Birmingham City.

But they followed up one of their best displays of the campaign with that poor loss against the Posh.

Evans knows they have to eradicate that inconsistency.

“Peterborough wasn’t good enough on our behalf at all and we knew that as a team,” Evans said. “We needed to be going there and getting a better result.

“When you get a game to try to put it right in front of your own fans on Boxing Day you’re devastated you don’t get that chance.

“Not being able to bounce back and having that gap gives you a lot more time to think about things.

“I got myself back in the team and scored

a goal, which is something I need to add a lot more to my game and influence games a lot better.

“You get yourself back in and start to feel a lot better and put a run of games together, but then something like Covid hits and it’s so frustrating on a personal note. It’s out of your control but I’m fit and raring to go to get that shirt.

“We’re trying to bridge that gap, we have put in some good performances and got results but we want to achieve something this year. We need to start getting back-toback wins and when we have one good performance back it up with another one.

“But you know what the Championship is like, no game is ever the same, there are always different challenges to face.

“It’s such a touch league in that sense but that’s just something we need to work on.

We played really well against Birmingham and didn’t play well at Peterborough.

“We need to get our consistency right.

It’s difficult to put your finger on that at the moment but we’re working hard to change it.

“If we can put back-to-back performances together then we’re a very good side.”

The Lions had wanted this game to be postponed as they had just fourteen senior fit players on Tuesday, including two goalkeepers.

The EFL said, ‘nope’. The result? A late winner for Tom Bradshaw and a debut for fifteen-year-old Zak Lovelace, who became the second-youngest player in the club’s history.

As Alex Pearce roared at the away end after the game: “That’ll do nicely! That’ll

do nicely!”

The Lions turned in an inspirational and gutsy performance, a message of “bring it on” to everyone else. It leaves them just three points outside the top six with a game in hand.

As well as Lovelace, boss Gary Rowett put academy players Nana Boateng and Besart Topalloj on the bench. After Covid ripped through the club in the last two weeks to add to injuries, the missing cast against the Sky Blues included Jed Wallace, George Evans, Daniel Ballard, Ryan Leonard, Connor Mahoney, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Ben Thompson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

It was a scrappy start, which was probably to be expected from two sides that hadn’t played since December 11.

The hosts were better in the first half, with Tyler Walker and Callum O’Hare the main threats to the Millwall goal.

Bartsoz Bialkowski had to deny O’Hare and Murray Wallace was forced to block Walker’s rebound as Mark Robins’ team moved the ball with conviction.

Millwall came on stronger towards the end of the opening 45 minutes. Shaun Hutchinson headed a free-kick wide and Wallace fired in an effort but it was comfortably held by Ben Wilson.

The second half started in the same vein as the first had ended with Rowett’s side creating the chances. Mason Bennett headed wide, Jake Cooper fired over and George Saville hooked an effort over the crossbar. Bradshaw was then off-target as he aimed to score in a fourth consecutive game.

Eleven minutes from time, Alex Pearce’s deep free-kick was headed on

by Cooper to Benik Afobe who nodded towards Bradshaw scampering into the six-yard box and he bundled the ball past Wilson.

Scrappy, yes, but the records show Bradshaw’s sixth goal in eight games and three points for his side.

And there was the icing on the cake.

Lovelace – 25 days shy of his sixteenth birthday – replaced Bradshaw in the 93rd minute. The only player younger

than him to ever make a first-team appearance for Millwall is Moses Ashikodi, who was fifteen years and 240 days when he played against Brighton in February 2003.

This was a night for heroes and Millwall had lots of them. Pearce – who had played only four minutes of league action this season – typified it. He was outstanding.

The club captain led the side through that tricky opening half and boy did he enjoy walking over to acclaim those Lions fans who had made the journey to the Midlands.

A word for them, too. There was doubt the game would go ahead, and on Tuesday morning Millwall thought it wouldn’t. But despite the uncertainty, and the game being just three days after Christmas, more than 800 away tickets were sold. Immense.

The Lions head to Bristol City on Sunday – if they have enough players – and the task is now to back up that performance. They haven’t registered consecutive wins since October. Good

Why Mitch to stop goal talk after word from coaches

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL has been told to concentrate on what’s going to make him a “really good player” as he aims to avoid talk about scoring more goals.

Mitchell, 20, revealed Millwall boss Gary Rowett and his coaching staff have read interviews in which the midfielder has spoken about wanting to be more of a goal threat.

Mitchell has scored once in 48 games in senior football, in the 4-1 win at home to Bristol City last May. He went close to getting a spectacular goal in the 1-1 draw against Bournemouth but his shot from 25 yards just cleared the top corner.

But it is the dirty work in midfield that Mitchell excels at, allowing others to get forward into scoring areas.

“I’ve spoken about it recently and, to be honest, I think it’s something I’ve got to stop talking about because the gaffer, Joe Carnall, Adam Barrett, Paul Robinson, have spoken to me about it,” Mitchell said.

“I think they’ve read a few of my interviews where I’ve been quite concerned with trying to score more goals, trying to add more going forward.

“They’ve just said to concentrate more on what I’m better at. I’ve scored six goals for Millwall across all age groups in about six seasons which tells me that’s not really a strength.

“They’ve said what’s going to perhaps make you a really good player for us is doing what you’re good at which is a lot

of running around, tackling people and distributing the ball pretty simply.

“They gave me that focus for the last few games and I think against Bournemouth – barring that run – and Birmingham City, that’s what I’ve done quite well.

“In some ways I think they’re trying to take the pressure off me. But that’s not to say I can’t try to improve that side of my game as well.”

Mitchell’s effort against Bournemouth came after some brilliant footwork on the left touchline that took him away from his opponents.

Mitchell added: “Close control is something I’ve always had pretty good.

With more and more games you build that confidence and are happy to try new things.

“Sometimes as well when you get in that

position stuck on the left it forces it out of you surrounded by a few players, you have to be inventive.

“I was gutted the shot didn’t go in because I think it would have been challenging for goal of the season.”

Billy Mitchell almost scored against Bournemouth after a brilliant run

has often been followed by bad, the 2-1 defeat at Peterborough following the 3-1 win over Birmingham the most recent example of their wild inconsistency.

It might be all hands on deck once more if Millwall are struggling for numbers at Ashton Gate.

But, yet again, the Lions showed that when their backs are to the wall and everything looks against them – including the actions of the football authorities – that’s when they come out fighting.

Lions boss keen to plough on Millwall went to Coventry with just 15 senior players

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett doesn’t believe it would do much good to have a break in the season despite rising Covid-19 cases.

The Lions went to Coventry City on Wednesday with just fifteen senior players available, including two goalkeepers.

Millwall requested that the game against the Sky Blues be postponed but that was rejected by the EFL. Rowett had to include a fifteenyear-old, forward Zak Lovelace, in his squad. Millwall were also without

some under-23s who could have stepped up as that camp was also hit

by Covid cases.

Millwall have had games against Preston and Swansea postponed. They play Crystal Palace in the third round of the FA Cup on January 8 and if they win that they will have at least three extra fixtures to fit into the last four months of the season. The regular Championship season is set to end on May 7.

The football authorities have a huge number of rescheduled games to fit into this campaign’s calendar. The 2022-23 season is slated to start in July to accommodate a break for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar next November and December, so the governing bodies

of club football will want to avoid an extended 2021-22 campaign.

Some managers have called for a break, but Rowett isn’t making the same demand.

“I think every club’s intention is to play games. Our intention is to play games,” Rowett said.

“What’s difficult at the moment is lots of clubs are in similar situations where they’re been made to play games.

“We’ll put a team out as competitive as we can and try to win games.

“It’s not just us. You’ve seen it where just over half the games and probably more than that are getting cancelled.

“The challenge for most clubs is working around the protocols that the league have given us, and then essentially being told you have to play the game is quite a difficult situation to be in.”

Zak attack – speedster schoolboy makes Millwall debut

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ZAK LOVELACE became the second-youngest player in Millwall’s history when he came on against Coventry City on Wednesday night.

Lovelace, aged fifteen years and 340 days, replaced match-winner Tom Bradshaw in the 93rd minute to help the Lions see out the victory.

The youngest player to ever play for Millwall is Moses Ashikodi, who was fifteen years and 240 days when he came on as a substitute against Brighton in February 2003 – three years before Lovelace was born.

Lovelace was eleven months old when his club captain Alex Pearce – who made his first league start of the season against the Sky Blues – made his debut in senior professional football for Reading.

Academy players Nana Boateng and Besart Topallaj were also on the bench though didn’t get on the pitch.

“The fans responded as soon as [Lovelace] came in,” Rowett said.

“He chased someone 50 yards – he’s absolutely lightning, by the way. But he didn’t have to do that. I said before he came on, if you run back and make a tackle, that might be just as important as running the other way and getting us up the pitch.

“It was nice to see.

“It’s a shame as well because I think Nana, Bez, they’ve trained really, really well this week and have just given us a little bit of extra spark, if I’m being honest.

“I’ve been really pleased.”
