Dulwich resident struggling after more than two months with severe mould

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Health and financial concerns are mounting for a Dulwich council resident who has been dealing with severe mould for over two months.

James Gillespie, 56, first contacted the council about the issue on October 10. Despite acknowledgement from the council and visits from various workers, the problem remains unresolved.

James says he has a continual cough and has to keep the windows open and the heating on to try to manage the mould, racking up costs.

He even stated that the mould was causing him to have blurred vision.

The beleaguered tenant says the council has offered him £50 in compensation, which he has refused as he intends to take the issue instead to the Local Government Ombudsman.

Nicole Jacobs, the Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales, is launching a comprehensive survey aimed at those who have experienced domestic abuse, in order to assess if services are being applied proportionately across the country.

This comes after Southwark Council’s Violence against Women and Girls strategy for 2019 - 2024 stated that Southwark has the fourth highest volume of recorded domestic abuse offences in London.

This is following an increase of 27 per cent since 2015/16, as well as an increase in referrals to commissioned specialist services by 52 per cent in the same time.

Furthermore, the prevalence of Female Genital Mutilation in Southwark is seven times the national rate among 15–49 year olds.

Need cases in Southwark have a domestic abuse element.

Ms Jacobs’ survey will be available online until January 31, 2022. By mapping out domestic abuse across the country, the Commissioner aims to improve our understanding of how different locations and demographics can influence domestic abuse rates.

Southwark Council have also taken action against violence against women and girls - who are the victims of over three quarters of domestic abuse cases - running several seminars and launching a safe space programme during this years’ 16 Days of Action between November 25 and December 10.

The council’s safe space programme saw support from domestic abuse charity Solace Women’s Aid, who said it was a “brilliant idea.”

“Southwark Council are taking this seriously,” they added.

However, they added that safe spaces might struggle with capacity given the local council’s already stretched budget.

Ms Jacobs’ mapping survey may serve to help areas like Southwark on this note, as the aim of the survey is to make sure resources are directed where domestic abuse is most prevalent.

He added that he had emailed the council repeatedly about the ongoing issue and tried to call, with response.

“This is a serious matter and shows that they are not fit for purpose,” he said.

“This is deplorable. Nothing will happen until the leader of the council takes personal responsibility.”

James first discovered the mould in his flat on October 6, when he happened to move a picture in his sitting room and found mould growing behind it.

The mould covers almost the entirety of part of his kitchen wall. A video, available on the News website, shows the extent of the damage.

Council officers visiting the flat have confirmed that the problem is the symptom of a broken mains pipe leaking into the walls. It is also affecting the flat below James.

Southwark Council has not responded to the News’ request for comment.

90% weekly rise in covid-19 cases across southwark

kit@southwarknews.co.uk New Covid-19 cases in Southwark went up by nearly 90 per cent this week, a huge increase that came as cases also soared in the rest of the UK, as the Omicron variant began to take hold.

New infections hit 2,731 in the borough in the week from November 7-13, up from 1,442 the week before which was itself an increase of nearly 40 per cent.

The monthly increase continues to grow, with new cases over the past week at more than four times the level we reported from November 8-15.

Across the south-east London boroughs, Southwark was behind only Lambeth for new Covid cases over the past week. Lambeth had 2,776 new infections, an increase of nearly 77 per cent. Lewisham and Greenwich were not far behind, where 2,427 and 2,264 more people tested positive respectively.

Bexley and Bromley, the outer London boroughs that have had more weekly infections over the past two months, had the lowest increase in new cases this week, at about 31 per cent and 27 per cent respectively.

Bexley recorded 1,699 new cases, with Bromley at 2,435.

It comes as the more transmissible

Omicron variant of Covid-19 continues to spread quickly across the UK. All adults are being encouraged to get booster jabs, as long as three months have passed since their second shot.

The NHS website struggled to deal with the high demand for booster jabs in the wake of the government's announcement on Sunday. Long queues formed outside walk-in vaccine centres, including St Thomas' hospital - where people said they had been queuing for two hours on Monday.

One local walk-in vaccine centre that may be less busy is the Waldron Health Centre on Amersham Vale in New Cross, which has been giving out jabs in a special programme from Tuesday (December 14) until Sunday (December 19).

The centre's GP Dr Seb Kalwij said: “Throughout the week, there will be a real Covid-19-safe festive atmosphere, with a DJ, mince pies, carol singing, coffee and hot chocolate. Everyone who comes along to be vaccinated will receive a warm welcome – and be confident in the knowledge that they’re in a safe environment and protecting themselves and their loved ones.”

Dr Nancy Kuchemann, GP clinical lead for Southwark, said: “The vaccination programme in south east London has been wonderful, and I’m so pleased that so many people have come together in support of this effort.

“This is a great example of effective partnership working for the benefit and health of all people who live in south east London.”

charles@southwarknews.co.uk A Dulwich school sent its children home on Monday following a COVID outbreak which includes the Omicron variant.

Dulwich Hamlet Junior School closed its doors to its pupils following “a rapid increase in the number of positive COVID cases among both staff and pupils over the weekend,” said a spokesperson for The Charter Schools Education Trust, who run the school.

Some of these cases have been confirmed as the Omicron variant.

The education trust added that they made the decision in the absence of direct access to advice on Sunday from Public Health England, and that it was in line with current government guidance.

All learning was moved online for Monday December 13. Years 4 and 6 were allowed back in on Tuesday, while Years 3 and 5 continued their classes online.

The situation is under constant review from the school, and while they hope to bring pupils back into class as soon as possible, they say it will be “entirely dependent” on the number of positive cases among the students and the staff.

They added: “The Trust’s intention is to ensure that staff and pupils are kept safe in school, and that pupils continue to receive a full education in the last week of term, hopefully onsite for as many pupils as possible.

“Any decisions made about the rest of the week will be done so in consultation with the local Public Health team.”

Self-isolation rules changed from Tuesday so that fully vaccinated adults who are a close contact of someone with Covid-19 are allowed to carry on life as normal, provided they take daily lateral flow tests.

The rules have also been relaxed for children aged five to 18 years and six months who are identified as a close contact.

By Charles Harrison A former department store in Peckham has been named as one of the top ten most endangered buildings in England and Wales.

President of the Victorian Society Griff Rhys Jones has compiled a list of the ten most endangered Victorian and Edwardian buildings in England and Wales, in the hopes of garnering support for their conservation - and the Jones and Higgins Department store in Peckham is one of them.

Originally built in 1867, the shop was a part of a ‘Golden Mile’ of shops along Peckham Rye which was said to rival Oxford Street. It was even once described by the New York Times as ‘The Beating Heart of London’s Most Dynamic Art Scene.’”

The clock tower was designed by Southwark architects Henry Jarvis & Sons, who also built Dulwich Hospital and the Walworth Town Hall. They took their inspiration for

the building’s façade from the Clock Tower in St. Mark’s Square, Venice.

The original shop closed in 1980, and while part of the building was demolished to make room for the Aylesham Centre, the rest of the building was taken over by the Peckham Palais nightclub - until that too closed around ten years ago.

Now without any purpose, the historic building is falling into ruin.

Griff Rhys Jones said: “The building’s architectural credentials, with its clock tower and design that is an ode to Venice, make it a valuable heritage asset. Its local connections with other buildings by the same Southwark architects make it a vital part of a larger heritage context.

“Like so much conservation, the issue is not the past, but the future.

Can we keep these testaments alive for our great, great grandchildren as part of their own story?

“Victorian and Edwardian buildings are part of everyone’s story. They are the living voices from our past.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been jailed after slashing a rival football fan in the face during a brawl near Surrey Quays station between Millwall and Everton supporters in January 2019.

Billy Cowap, 29, of Riddons Road in Lewisham, was sentenced on Monday (December 13) to six years and eight months’ imprisonment for grievous bodily harm (GBH), three years and four months for attempted GBH, and one year for violent disorder, to be served concurrently. The man he attacked needed several operations to his face and has been left with lasting injuries.

Cowap had pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing. He was also issued with a ten-year football banning order. Seven other men were also given sentences related to the violent scenes.

The court heard how on January 26, 2019, Millwall and Everton football fans fought before a fourth round FA Cup match at The Den. Violent disorder escalated between the two sets of fans, with a big fight breaking out between the two groups, involving over 100 people. Within the violent disorder Cowap slashed a man’s face with a knife.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Flowers and messages of sympathy adorn the Camberwell park where a body, believed to be that of a missing local nurse assistant, was found last Sunday, December 12.

Petra Srncova, 32, is a senior nurse

assistant at the Evelina London Children’s Hospital - run by the same NHS trust that manages Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals. She was last seen at 7.45pm on Sunday, November 28, and was reported missing by a concerned hospital colleague on Friday, December 3.

At 11.40am on Sunday, police reported that they had found a body believed to be that of Ms Srncova in Brunswick Park, Camberwell. The body was allegedly found by a group of children in the area, but this has not been confirmed.

While the death is currently being treated as unexplained, initial enquiries by police suggest the circumstances are not suspicious.

“I’m so sorry you lost your life,” reads one anonymous note, left on the fence of Brunswick Park. “We will fight for justice.”

“May you fly with the angels,” reads another, left by her colleagues in Evelina Hospital.

Czech foreign minister Jakub Kulhanek appeared to confirm the body’s identity in a tweet, originally in Czech: : “Very sad news: The British police unfortunately confirmed to our embassy in London this afternoon that they had found the body of a missing Czech citizen.

“The cause of death is being investigated. With regard to the family, we will not provide more information about the case. Condolences.” Ms Srncova’s father Petr told a Czech TV

• The Met Police release a public appeal for information regarding the senior nursing assistant’s disappearance, and reveal that a man has been arrested and taken into custody in connection with the case.

• Detective Superintendent Clair Kelland says at the time: “Petra’s disappearance is out of character and her family and friends are very worried.”

The officers on the scene stated that the detective was gathering information, while they patrolled to reassure locals that they were safe.

After she left the hospital two weeks ago, it is believed that Ms Srncova withdrew money from a cash machine, before getting on a bus towards Elephant and Castle.

Police believe she then changed to a new bus going towards her home in Camberwell.

MP for Camberwell and Peckham Harriet Harman gave a press conference on Saturday afternoon in which she appealed for help in finding Ms Srncova.

Guy’s and St Thomas’ added in a statement on Saturday: “We are extremely concerned about our valued colleague Petra who is missing. We want to encourage anyone who may have any information that could help to find her to contact the police.”

The police investigation is ongoing.

‘small victory’ as infill plan goes back to drawing board

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Campaigners are claiming a “small victory” after they said Southwark Council took a controversial social housing infill scheme in Borough back to the drawing board.

An eight-flat building nicknamed ‘Little Dodson’ at 49-56 Dodson Street, between Blackfriars Road and Waterloo, has long been slated to be knocked down, alongside nearby garages to be replaced by eleven council flats.

Campaigners on the Dodson and Amigo estate say this would break up their community and claim to have collected 87 signatures out of 135 households for a petition against the new build.

The infill project, which had not reached the planning application stage yet, was one small part of Southwark Council’s plan to build 11,000 council homes by 2043 to tackle its 16,200-person housing waiting list.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk The family of a murdered southeast London private investigator is seeking legal action against the Met Police after a botched investigation.

Daniel Morgan, a father of two, was killed with an axe in the car park of the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, southeast London, on March 10, 1987.

In June, an independent panel accused the Metropolitan Police of “a form of institutional corruption” for concealing or denying failings over the case.

The family of Mr Morgan welcomed the findings of the report in a statement given at the time. They added that they and the wider public have been “failed over the decades by a culture of corruption and cover-up in the Metropolitan Police, an institutionalised corruption that has permeated successive regimes in the Metropolitan Police and beyond to this day.”

The Morgan family have now stated that they had no choice but to file a civil claim against the Met “in order to achieve some semblance of accountability”.

At the time of the failed investigation, Met Police commissioner Dame Cressida Dick apologised to Mr Morgan’s family, saying it was a “matter of great regret that no-one has been

brought to justice and that our mistakes have compounded the pain suffered by Daniel’s family”.

A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “We can confirm that the Metropolitan Police Service has received a letter of claim, dated 7 December, and is currently considering its response.

“Since the Daniel Morgan Independent Panel published its report six months ago, a dedicated team within the Met has been established and is progressing its response to those recommendations specific to the Met, while engaging with other lead organisations named in the report.

“We remain committed to this work and expect to fully report our progress to the Home Secretary and Mayoral Office in the Spring 2022.”

The development, on Southampton Way, would have provided 32 new homes in a three-seven storey building on land that is currently a scrap yard. Six of these homes would have been council flats. Developers Burlington Homes would have also cleared some of the site and added it to the park.

The problem, as far as the planning committee and local campaigners were concerned, was the site itself, which is metropolitan open land (MOL). MOL is protected by London planning policy to the same extent as the green belt around the capital.

Tooley Street planners said in a report written ahead of the meeting that “the development would result in substantial harm to the openness of MOL”.

As we reported in April, campaigners Friends of Burgess Park have pointed out that the council has previously proposed buying up the land through a compulsory purchase order. A report in January 2014 said that “this work will dramatically improve the environment at the north end of Southampton Way and for the regenerated Elmington Estate. This proposed sizable increase in green space will also yield benefits for Camberwell as a whole.”

Friends of Burgess Park and Burgess Park Action Group want the council to buy up the land and add it to the park to protect the area’s biodiversity, which includes a nearby wildlife site.

The St Giles ward councillors spoke out in Tuesday’s meeting against the scheme and in favour of the site being brought into the park.

Philip Patrick, managing director of developers Burlington Homes, said earlier this year that he had spent two years in consultation with local people, the council and the Greater London Authority and added that the development, which is technically all “affordable”, would help meet the borough’s “pressing housing need”.

The scheme was voted down unanimously.

Ms Gilmartin said she would be putting forward a different plan in talks with the council. Her plan would retain ‘Little Dodson’ and build three extra flats on the garages site - which would result in the same number of homes as the current plan.

Man stabbed to death in Elephant and Castle

A 23-year-old man was stabbed to death in Elephant and Castle on Tuesday night, writes Charles Harrison...

Police were called to reports of a stabbing at 7.46pm. Despite the best efforts of the London Ambulance Service and London Air Ambulance, who attended with officers, the man was pronounced dead on the scene.

His next of kin have been informed, although formal identification has yet to take place.

Detectives from the Specialist Crime Command are investigating and are calling for anyone who was in the area at the time to offer any information they may have.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has information about what took place, should call 101 giving the reference 6908/14DEC. Information can also anonymously be provided to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

There have been no arrests, and the investigation will continue.

Uncertainty over autism support

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The future of Southwark’s support service for young autistic children appears to be shrouded in uncertainty, after the council seemed to propose getting rid of it.

The council’s Early Years Autism Service works with children up to the age of five on the autism spectrum. Services include helping children develop communication and social skills, as well as self-help and independence. Parents and nurseries where autistic children go can also get support from the service.

A line in the council’s proposed budget document for the 2022/2023

financial year suggests that the Early Years Autism Service is to be cut, to provide a saving of £200,000.

The News understands that the council may be proposing to end the service because officers believe there is already enough provision for young autistic children in Southwark.

But the council has not provided any further details on what this provision is or how it would support Southwark’s young autistic children if the cut were to be confirmed.

As well as the autism support service, the budget proposals also appear to suggest reducing the special educational needs inclusion service and various other early years support offerings. It is unclear if these

are actually cuts, as the council did not provide more details in time for publication.

Southwark’s publicly available autism strategy says that the borough has one of the highest rates of autism among young people in the country, and the number going to local schools is increasing every year.

There is no clear figure for how many children could be affected by the end of the Early Years Autism Support Service. In the strategy, the borough says that there are 1,100 children and young people with autism who are known to local services in Southwark, so a rough estimate for the number under the age of five might be in the low hundreds.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark is among the worst local authorities in the country for fly-tipping - out of more than 300 according to new government data.

The borough ranks eleventh per 1,000 people among all 333 local authorities in the UK, with 21,386 incidents from April 2020-March 2021.

That’s up more than 20 per cent from the previous year, when there were 17,782 incidents over a twelve-month period. Fly-tipping incidents went up across London as a whole by about seven per cent over the same period, from just over 360,000 to about 384,000.

Southwark says it ranks so highly because it logs all fly-tipping, not just incidents reported by the public.

Despite the borough’s high level of fly-tipping, Southwark ranks 198th for enforcement action taken against people who dump rubbish illegally - down from 44th the year before. The council said it fined 341 people for fly-tipping between April and the end of November this year.

One woman who lives on Bermondsey’s Rouel Road estate, and who didn’t want to be named, said she was surprised Southwark wasn’t higher on the list. “I’ve lived here for five years and it’s been bad all this time,” she added.

She said that she wanted the council to do more to change people’s attitudes to fly-tipping.

“I blame the council because people are dumping in a place with no dumping signs. They’ve said they’re going to bring in mobile CCTV to watch who dumps [rubbish] but I haven’t seen any.

“They need the mobile [CCTV] units, they need to put posters up on our estate, in all the different languages so people don’t have an excuse.

“No one’s interested [in sorting out the fly-tipping problem] because no one does anything about it. People’s attitude is the point.”

Southwark introduced a £25 charge on collecting bulky waste items like fridges and wardrobes in 2015. The council has brought in about £1.2m in revenue from this service in the six years since.

Southwark’s bulky waste disposal charge is typical for London boroughs.

An analysis by the News of all 33 local authorities in London showed that most councils charge between £20-£50 for getting rid of big items like fridges and sofas, with a few outliers on either side.

Richmond has the highest charge of £62 for up to five items, although the south-west London council also offers free collections for people on housing benefits. Kensington and Chelsea, Westminster and Hackney also all offer free collection for similar groups, while Islington gives a 50 per cent discount.

Southwark’s Liberal Democrats put forward a motion to get rid of the bulky waste disposal charge at the last full council meeting in December, but this was unsuccessful.

Following the meeting the borough’s Lib Dem leader called again for the council to drop the charges.

Cllr Hamish McCallum, leader of Southwark’s Lib Dems, said: “Time and time again we have warned of the impact of bulky waste disposal charges. Residents are unhappy with the state of our streets and Labour is simply ignoring them.

“Even the Conservatives at City of Westminster Council provide concessions for bulky waste disposal.

Southwark Labour must urgently get a grip and address this issue.”

Asked why she thought people were flytipping, the Rouel Road estate resident said: “Why pay £25 when you can pay nothing? I can’t see it getting better.”

Similar to the street cleaning issue we reported on last week, it’s clear that there are multiple causes for the fly-tipping problem in Southwark.

Councillor David Renard, environment spokesperson for the Local Government Association, said that companies that produce bulky goods should help councils bear the burden by taking back items that people no longer want.

He said: “Manufacturers should also contribute to the costs to councils of clearup, by providing more take-back services, so people can hand in old furniture and mattresses when they buy new ones.”

Cllr Darren Merrill, Cabinet Member for a Safer, Cleaner Borough, said: “Our position in the performance table has been fairly consistent in relative terms for some years. However, our fly-tipping numbers reflect the fact that we log and report all fly-tipping. This includes instances reported to us and those identified and cleared by our staff. This helps us to better map a clear picture of problem areas, and address them. A number of other councils only record flytipping that is reported by the public. The two methods give different results.

“In Southwark we are committed to reducing fly-tipping and our officers work to identify and address the worst affected areas. We increase patrols in hotspot areas, install temporary CCTV and work to redesign spaces to discourage illegal fly-tipping. In addition to this, we take enforcement action against those who fly-tip. We issued 341 fines to residents and businesses for fly-tipping between 1 April and 30 November, this year. We also help local residents to understand how to dispose of their waste responsibly and ensure that businesses have the correct waste collection agreements in place.”

South Bank groups hit out at ‘grotesque’ tower block plans

Japanese developer Mitsubishi Estates bought the 24-storey London Studios tower in 2019 and wants to knock it down to build three office blocks with shops and “cultural spaces”. The blocks will be 26, thirteen and six storeys high.

Mitsubishi wants to make the site more open to the public, with open squares and walkways.

But local groups are worried that the plans would affect daylight in nearby houses and the local area more broadly.

Iain Tuckett, from Coin Street Community Builders, said; “The scale, bulk and siting of the proposed development is excessive, overbearing and overly dominant. The impacts on daylight received by adjacent Coin Street housing co-operatives will be severe.

Michael Ball from Waterloo Community Development Group, who led the campaign against the failed Garden Bridge, added that the proposals were a “grotesquery on steroids, a swollen deformity for the South Bank.”

Lambeth Council previously gave planning permission for two 31 and 14 storey towers on the site containing 213 homes, but these plans have been sidelined for the office development.

The new application was submitted earlier this year.

The News was unable to reach Mitsubishi Estates for comment.

Yuichiro Shioda, the company’s London CEO, said in February: “It is absolutely vital to us that we share and discuss our plans with the people that make up the South Bank community.

“Understanding their views will be crucial to making sure that this new building can be a place that the community can enjoy, and that local businesses can reap the rewards from increased footfall during this difficult time.”

The theatre, which is also getting a new venue near Elephant and Castle, said the deal would allow them to put on a lot more events through the year.

The new Colechurch House, owned by property developer CIT, would have two theatres, made up of 250 seats and 150 seats respectively.

Southwark Playhouse artistic director and CEO, Chris Smyrnios, said: “The move back to London Bridge has been a long time in the making, with many twists and turns. This deal with CIT brings us back to the London Bridge area and gives us a brand new venue that provides us with much needed capacity, critical to ensuring the future of our organisation."

The new building, which would largely be made up of offices and shops, isn't confirmed yet because the planning application is still being considered by Southwark Council's planning officers.

If approved, CIT would knock down

the current 1960s block opposite London Bridge to build the new tower.

The application on the council's website has ten comments objecting and five in favour.

But Kieron Williams, leader of Southwark Council, called the arrangement "a great deal for the Playhouse".

Cllr Williams added: “We are pleased to have been able to support them through the pandemic and to help them secure this deal with CIT. "At a time when theatres in London have faced unparalleled challenges it is great to see the Playhouse not just survive, but double in size. This will significantly increase the opportunities the Playhouse can offer to local Southwark residents and new and emerging theatre talent.”

CIT have several plans for big new buildings in the area around Borough and Bankside. The developer's 27-storey office block plan for Becket House, a former Home Office building on St Thomas street, the other side of London Bridge station, got the goahead in July.

Mr Kakooza’s objection was explained away in the council planning officers’ report approving the development, who claimed that the noise would be less of a problem because the flats would only start on the first floor.

Officers added that the development would be “more compatible” with the council’s future vision for the Old Kent Road than the bar.

The development forms part of the much wider Old Kent Road area action plan, in which the council plans to get 20,000 new homes built in the area north and south of the bustling thoroughfare.

Developer of the new block Urban & Provincial, said: “Working closely with the London Borough of Southwark and our development partner Avanton, we are currently proposing to deliver a new public park, a further 260 residential units and circa 20,000 sq ft retail and workspace.

“Our proposals also include 40 per cent affordable housing delivering much needed family homes in the Borough of Southwark.

The scheme also hosts various shared spaces such as roof terraces, landscaped gardens and ‘communal hubs’ to foster a spirit of togetherness and family.”

A council spokesperson said: “As a local planning authority, we have statutory procedures in place so that all applications, including objections and supporters, are heard fairly. When our Planning Committee considered the proposal for 651-657 Old Kent Road last June, members considered the impact of the development on surrounding businesses.

“The owners of Ruby Lounge were consulted and their objection was reported to the committee ensuring an informed decision was made. To minimise the likelihood of noise complaints, conditions relating to the ‘agent of change’ principle were attached. This means the developer is responsible for managing noise levels within new homes, not the surrounding occupiers.”

by LSER with respect to its engagement with the DfT over several years.

"In particular, the group accepts that, by failing to notify the DfT of certain overpayments or monies due to the DfT, LSER breached contractual obligations.

Club fears block could ruin business

TfL fund deal delay

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London’s (TfL) funding agreement with the government has been rolled over by a week.

The transport agency has been reliant on a series of short-term funding agreements with the government after losing much of its fare income during the pandemic.

A new deal was supposed to be agreed last Saturday (December 11), but was pushed back to this Saturday (December 17).

Mayor Sadiq Khan has warned that much of London’s transport services and infrastructure funding could be cut without billions of pounds more investment from the government.

That includes investment in extending the Bakerloo Line, which is crucial to Southwark’s development plans along the Old Kent Road, but which now looks an unlikely prospect for decades to come.

It also includes funding for upkeep of the Rotherhithe Tunnel, which transport chiefs have warned could be forced to close without £120m of investment.

A Transport for London (TfL) spokesperson said: “We continue to discuss our funding requirements with the Government, who have today indicated their intention to extend our funding support for TfL through until 17 December 2021.

“There is no UK recovery from the pandemic without a London recovery and there is no London recovery without a properly funded transport network in the capital. We hope the discussions can be successfully concluded soon.”

The Department for Transport said that it has provided TfL with about £4bn in funding since the start of the pandemic, but declined to comment on the current status of talks.

Kazeem Reaves Odunsi, who has been vaccinating people for the south London NHS trust since January this year, said he saw himself as “taking part in history”.

Mr Reaves Odunsi said he first took part in an outreach programme run by Guy’s and St Thomas’ to persuade reluctant staff to get the vaccine. “But turnout was quite low,” he added. There was then a more targeted effort.

“I’ve been asked to speak to essential workers, who are often from ethnic minorities, who are scared to get the vaccine,” he said.

“I’m not putting them under duress - I’m just giving them ten reasons why they should be vaccinated.

When asked why he thought staff might be wary of getting the vaccine, Mr Reaves Odunsi said: “I’m not political, I can’t speak to it. It’s not just a UK thing. It’s a global thing, we are all asked to protect ourselves.”

He added that staff he was speaking to “gave me their own opinions” about the vaccine. Noting that the vaccines do not give total protection from the virus, he said: “In life, there is nothing guaranteed - we have assurance and not insurance.”

Mr Reaves Odunsi has had a pandemic of two halves. He was laid off from his job as a gym manager at the start of lockdown, where he had risen from being a cleaner, to a receptionist, to a sales manager over the course of a decade, before getting the top job.

He had a family to support and went looking for jobs but was unsuccessful. “I didn’t panic. I channelled my energy in the right direction,” he said. He finally got a position at a care home, where bosses thought the new role might be beneath

The Greater London Authority report was signed off by their executive director of housing and land Rickardo Hyatt. In the report, he said: “The grant funding will help close the viability gap and support the delivery of the affordable units on the east site.”

City Hall says that the scheme is expected to create approximately 1,230 construction jobs per year for 10 years, and 2,000 jobs in the new town centre.

Booster jabs are now set to be rolled out to every adult by the end of January, after the onset of the more transmissible Omicron variant of Covid. Asked whether he was concerned about the extra workload, Mr Reaves Odunsi said: “No, it’s not a big stress, it’s something that was anticipated. We know it might be a challenge but the whole pandemic we have been learning and adapting.”

TfL BANS E-SCOOTERS FROM NETWORK AFTER BATTERY FIRES

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London (TfL) has banned e-scooters and e-unicycles from its transport network from next Monday (December 13) after a series of "intense fires" caused by faulty batteries.

SHELL HQ PLAN TRIGGERS ENVIRONMENTAL PROTEST

By Charles Harrison Campaigners struck out against Shell last Friday to protest its proposed move of management base from the Netherlands to Southwark.

Equipped with banners and drums, the activists, led by key climate change groups Fossil Free London and Extinction Rebellion Southwark, gathered outside the Shell centre in Waterloo to declare the the multinational oil and gas company unwelcome in the borough.

They particularly highlighted the company’s alleged involvement in the climate crisis, citing studies showing that in 2019 Shell produced 1.65 billion tons of carbon dioxide equivalent around the same as Russia, the world’s fourth-largest polluter.

Megan Atkins, from Extinction Rebellion Southwark, said: “Shell ranks among the top corporations responsible for the highest historic carbon emissions, and has known about the devastating impact of climate change since the 1980s.

“We cannot trust Shell's shareholders, who profit from destruction, with our future - the fossil industry has no part in our energy transition and must be shut down."

While the company has stated that they aim to reach net-zero emissions by 2050, a report by Global Climate Insights found that they would be unlikely to be on track to achieve this after 2022.

Despite Friday’s protest, shareholders voted almost unanimously on the same day, December 10, to move Shell’s headquarters to the Southwark office.

This has come at the end of a turbulent year for the company. In May, Shell suffered a historic defeat a case brought by Friends of the Earth Netherlands, and was ordered to cut emissions by 45% in 2030.

Protestors argue that by moving its tax base to the UK, Shell may be hoping to fend off further legal scrutiny in the Netherlands as well as avoid the Dutch ‘dividend tax’.

Shell has yet to respond to the News’ request for comment.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Firefighters rushed to put out a mysterious car fire in Rotherhithe last Wednesday evening (December 8) after twenty locals called in.

Footage of the scene, near Alfred Salter Primary on Roberts Close, shows firefighters attempting to douse the blaze.

The fire was put out within twenty minutes of the fire engine arriving. No one was hurt.

A spokesperson for the fire brigade said: "Firefighters were called to a car alight on Roberts Close in Rotherhithe on Wednesday evening.

"The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took 20 calls to the blaze. There were no reports of any injuries.

"The Brigade was called at 2333 and the fire was under control by 2350. One fire engine from Deptford Fire Station attended."

There is no explanation for why the car was on fire. Police said they were not investigating.

Lithium ion batteries in the e-scooters have exploded without warning several times on the public transport network recently. TfL said they were "extremely worried" by these incidents, which released toxic smoke.

If the fires happened in an enclosed space like a bus or train there could be "significant harm" to passengers and staff, the transport agency said.

Some e-scooters were already banned, but the kind that fold up were previously allowed.

Privately-owned e-scooters are illegal to ride on public roads anyway, although TfL runs its own hire scheme in several boroughs, which include Southwark. These e-scooters for hire are also banned from public transport

run by TfL for space reasons. The ban does not include mobility scooters or foldable e-bikes, which tend to have safer batteries.

Anyone who tries to come onto a bus or Tube, Overground, DLR, trams or TfL rail train with an e-scooter should now be refused entry, or even fined up to £1,000. TfL said this will be policed by its 500 enforcement officers.

Lilli Matson, TfL's Chief Safety, Health and Environment Officer, said: "Our primary concern is always for the safety of our customers and staff. We have been extremely worried by the recent incidents on our public transport services, which involved intense fires and considerable smoke and damage.

"We have worked with London Fire Brigade to determine how we should deal with these devices and, following that review, we have decided to ban them. Customers who try to bring them onto our network will be refused access to our stations and premises, and not be permitted to use any of our services."

London Fire Brigade Assistant Commissioner for Fire Safety, Paul

Jennings, said: "We have growing concerns about the safety of e-scooters due to the amount of fires we are seeing involving them, so we fully support TfL's ban of private e-scooters on public transport.

"Fires are dangerous and terrifying wherever they happen, but a fire on the transport network has the potential to become very serious very quickly and involve hundreds of people, particularly on trains where evacuation may be challenging, so anything that can be done to mitigate that risk is a positive step."

British Transport Police also said they would help enforce the ban, alongside TfL's own team.

Superintendent Lisa Garrett, said: "Our priority is the safety of passengers and the staff members working across Transport for London services. We'll be working alongside frontline staff to engage with the public on this issue, and enforce where necessary."

Private e-scooters and e-unicycles are unregulated, meaning they are not currently required to meet any minimum vehicle standards.

A converted terraced house had half of its ground floor flat damaged by fire, which was under control by 11.20pm.

passers-by raced to find daughter before dad died

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Two Rotherhithe heroes were able to make sure a 91-yearold local legend’s daughter was there for his final moments.

Bertie Hogg, who had spent his whole life living in Rotherhithe, was often seen travelling around the area on his mobility scooter or sharing a bottle of prosecco in the Blacksmith’s Arms.

On Friday (December 3), when Bertie became ill on his way to the doctor’s, it was thanks to the kindness and quick thinking of two passers-by, Hassan and Sara, that his last request was able to be heard and honoured: to be with his daughter Kim, 62.

“It was amazing what they did,” said Kim. “I just know that everything happens for a reason.”

Bertie grew up on Rotherhithe Street, before moving to Acorn Walk as a young man, where he stayed for the rest of his life.

After he died, Kim received many messages from people she didn’t even know, sharing how they would always get a wave from Bertie as they passed him or how they had sat and chatted with him about local history in the pub.

Kim added: “Even the priest said he’d often walk down the street, see my dad and get a wave and an ‘oy-oy!’

“Since mum passed eight years ago, me and my dad had breakfast with each other every single day. I knew that he had some fear around dying.

“I was able to share Jesus with him, something that normally my dad wouldn’t listen to, but he did then.

“That’s why it was so important I was able to be there when he passed.”

When they stopped to help him, Hassan and Sara heard what would be Bertie’s last words: “Can you get my daughter?”

Luckily, another passer-by who knew Kim was able to run and get her.

“By the time I got there the ambulance was there,” said Kim. “When we got to the hospital, the doctor came out and told me he wasn’t going to make it.

“I said to him, I’m not afraid of my dad dying because I know there’s a lot of people who are going to receive him the other end. But this side, I know he’d be fearful, and I need to be with him.

“I had a couple of minutes with him at the end of his life, so I could tell him to look for the light, and that my mum and my brother would be waiting on the other side.

“My dad took a couple of deep breaths, and he went.

“That is how crucial that time was.

Without Hassan and Sara, I would never have been able to be with him. I would never have known what his last words were.”

Kim has since been able to get in contact with the two heroes who had helped her father in his last moments.

Bermondsey school given grant to get kids building rockets and rollercoasters

A Bermondsey school has been given a £100,000 grant for afterschool classes to help children with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) - including by building rockets and designing rollercoasters, writes Kit Heren...

City of London Academy Southwark, on Lynton Road, was given the grant to put on after-school clubs that make STEM subjects interesting and exciting, over the course of six weeks.

The clubs are meant to be hands-on and will help children with other like skills like problem-solving, teamwork and decisionmaking.

The money comes from charity the Cadent Foundation and the groups will be run by educational charity City Year UK. Fifteen schools across the country are taking part.

Third person charged with murder of Emmanuel

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London (TfL) wants to cut up to 600 jobs from its Tube services, amid concerns about the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on its finances.

The transport agency will not replace some staff when they leave and will not fill some current job vacancies, with between 500 and 600 jobs set to go.

Transport union RMT, which is in talks with TfL over the proposed cuts, hit out at the transport agency, claiming that

the safety of passengers and staff was being compromised. The union has already begun balloting for a possible strike.

The union's general secretary Mick Lynch said: “TfL know that what London Underground are doing is wrong. They have the data that shows passengers want more staff, not less and they now have the data showing that crime and anti-social behaviour rates are up and passenger confidence is shaken.

"If they persist with these cuts it will further erode passenger confidence in tube travel and we risk seeing London

Underground descending into a spiral of decline that will cause immeasurable damage to London.

“TfL’s Board and the Mayor need to show some spine, do what they know is right and step in to stop these cuts and this government need to stop partying while London crumbles and provide the funds we need to get out of this growing crisis.”

TfL's finances have suffered in the pandemic, with the loss of fares taking a devastating toll. The agency has warned that services and infrastructure spending will be slashed without

billions of pounds of fresh investment.

Nick Dent, director of customer operations for London Underground, said: "We remain completely committed to retaining our customer service offer, with stations staffed at all times while trains are operating.

"The discussions are at an early stage, and we will continue to work with our employees and trade union colleagues as proposals are developed."

Tube drivers are in the middle of an intermittent strike that is set to last until December 17 over Night Tube scheduling.

A third person has been charged with the murder of a young man who was stabbed to death in Woolwich in October, writes Kit Heren...

Shai Bosman-Allen, 20, of Windmill Close in Lewisham, was charged on Wednesday, December 8 with the murder of Emmanuel Ogabi, 26.

Mr Ogabi was found collapsed in the street on Sandy Hill Road in Woolwich at about 7.45am on October 21, bleeding from a single stab wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bosman-Allen's murder charge comes after Denzel Maposa, 23, of Dunstable in Bedfordshire, and Onyema Olisa of Boone Street in Lewisham, were also charged with Mr Ogabi's killing.

ver since Prince Albert hung candles on a tree and Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol, we have associated Christmas with the Victorians. But how much of our modern Christmas tradition do we owe to the Victorians? And how much have things changed?

This was the basis of a project at the Brunel Museum last winter with Albion Primary School and residents from a local care home. Originally planned to take place in person, the disruption caused by the last-minute lockdown meant the Museum had to find a way to make the project work remotely.

Luckily Isambard Kingdom Brunel and his sister Sophia were in the ‘hood and were able to drop by the primary school to help pupils come up with questions, which they filmed.

The museum invited the care home residents to film their responses to the questions, reflecting on their memories of Christmas. Feedback from the care home residents was overwhelmingly positive: “How lovely it is to have the chance to talk and tell children about what life was like for me at Christmas when I was little,” said Joan.

“I want to make everyone mince pies when we can meet together at last - I don’t care if it is July!” said Thora.

These filmed questions and answers formed the basis of a film, intercut with Isambard and Sophia’s father (and architect of the Thames Tunnel) Marc’s own reminiscences of his Christmases with Isambard and Sophia, including the roots of many of the treasured traditions we take for granted and which originated in his time.

So what was Christmas like for the Brunels? While a lot of the traditions we associated with Christmas originated in Victorian times, it was still more of a religious festival than it

Guy's celebrates staff with more than 700 years' service between them

Guy's and St Thomas' hospital held an event to thank long-serving staff who between them have worked at the NHS trust for more than 700 years.

The 25 staff members celebrated have each worked at the trust for at least 25 years, in jobs including nursing, finance, housekeeping, physiotherapy, physicist, receptionists and procurement.

In that time the Borough hospital has given more than 775,000 jabs to over 450,000 people - the equivalent of the Den filled 22 times over.

About 13.9m doses of the vaccine have been given out in London overall - meaning around one in every eighteen jabs in the capital was given by staff at Guy's Hospital.

The hospital's first vaccine centre was set up on December 8, 2020 to administer a few hundred Pfizer vaccinations a day - and the trust now has six temporary centres across Guy’s Hospital and St Thomas’ Hospital.

Each centre delivers up to 1,200 vaccinations a day and between them they administer three different vaccines - Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Moderna.

If all the vials of vaccines the trust has given were lined up next to each other, they would stretch the 4km along the Thames path from St Thomas’ Hospital at Westminster Bridge to Guy’s Hospital by London

People who say they have been jabbed at Guy's include Boris Johnson and the Archbishop of Canterbury - and even Santa Claus.

The first person to have her vaccination at Guy’s Hospital was Lyn Wheeler.

Lyn, 82, from Bromley, said: “The vaccines gave me hope, particularly a year ago when there was desperation. Older people were being isolated from everything and it was a very hard time. We couldn’t carry on like that. We were afraid, and we had to fight back.

“I’ve had my three vaccines now – they’ve given me the confidence to go out again to see my family, go to church, see the children in the school where I work and volunteer at COVID and flu vaccination sessions - always carefully, of course.”

The government changed the vaccine rules to allow all adults to have their booster jab quicker than planned, amid fears over the rise of the Omicron variant. Ministers aim to get everyone their booster by the end of January.

The trust set up in memory of Damilola Taylor, the ten-year-old boy shockingly killed in Peckham in 2000, has been given £10,000 by the National Lottery to make a film reflecting the experiences of young people in south London.

The 'Celebrating Hope' project will take on up to twenty young people, aged 14-24 years old, from across Southwark, Lambeth and Croydon and will be led by four members of the trust.

The Damilola Taylor Trust said that the project will encourage disadvantaged young people to get creative by writing and shooting a film to illustrate the impact

A Surrey Quays artist is organising an exhibition made up of local people’s work.

Rod Kitson, resident artist at Surrey Quays shopping centre, asked artists of all ages, backgrounds and ability) to send in submissions for the exhibition, which will run from December 17-January 6 in the Art of Isolation gallery in Surrey Quays shopping centre.

Rod said: “Art from all ages and abilities is welcome in my End of Year Show which will be a celebration of the local community’s creativity. From paintings to sculptures and mixed media, everyone is welcome to submit an entry and see their work on display

Castle Square Christmas events

Castle Square has been transformed into one of the most festive spots in the city this winter.

Throughout December there will be weekly English sessions, the Upside Down Street Dance Club for Kids and Teens, all to the backdrop of beautiful Christmas lights and decorations.

The lighting of the Castle Square Christmas tree saw the Elephant and Castle Community Hub choir singing “The Twelve Days of Castle Square”, based on Castle Square and

Ash Avenue businesses.

A group of local artists also created a version of the Christmas Carol story, set in Elephant and Castle with characters that represent the diversity of the area.

Each Saturday this month will see the square adorned with “Instagrammable” Christmas grottos for the perfect holiday picture, from 12-4pm.

Every Wednesday from 7 - 8pm the Elephant and Castle Community hub are offering weekly English lessons, focusing on conversation. Suitable

for learners at a near beginner level, the classes aim to be fun and interactive with lots of practice. T For those wanting to find calm during their busy week, Monday Mindfulness will be available to all to join every Monday morning online from 10am to 12pm. Every Thursday at 11am, Re-Tribe will also be running self-care workshops over Zoom so people can connect with themselves and each other.

The recycled toys were collected before the COVID pandemic, when selected McDonald’s restaurants across the UK and Ireland held a ‘toy amnesty’ collecting plastic toys to recycle.

These were combined with surplus toys from when restaurant businesses closed during the first lockdown McDonald’s report that from the beginning of this year there has been no non-sustainable hard plastic in Happy Meal® toys, removing over 3,000 tonnes of plastic from circulation moving forward.

The world’s largest trial of a ground breaking new cancer screening test in Elephant and Castle has been fully booked following a massive community response.

South East London Cancer Alliance, said: “It’s fantastic that so many south east Londoners have seized the opportunity to be part of this revolutionary trial, supporting the NHS to detect and fight cancer earlier.”

Dr Vin Diwakar, Medical Director for the NHS in London, added: “We all fear cancer – and early diagnosis even before symptoms even appear gives us the best chance of survival.

“By taking part in this trial, residents in Southwark are the forefront of developing a test that has the potential to save lives from cancer in England and around the world.”

All participants will be invited back after 12 months, and again at two years, to give further blood samples. Stringent infection prevention control measures are followed at all mobile clinics to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Camberwell playground made of Happy Meal toys to open

A playground made from McDonald’s Happy Meal toys will be opening in Camberwell for families visiting children in hospital.

Camberwell Call the Midwife star calling for help with poverty A Call the Midwife star is urging people to turn the cost of a coffee into a meal for deprived Southwark families.

Actress and Camberwell resident Jenny Agutter OBE, known for her role as Sister Julienne in long-running show Call the Midwife, is encouraging donations to the St Giles charity, which helps adults and young people facing poverty.

This comes as the increased cost of living presents a difficult time for low income households, as inflation has not been met by a rise in wages or Universal Credit.

Agutter said: “Christmas 2021 is going to be a tough time for most of us, but families who have been hit by the cut to Universal Credit and the surge in fuel and food costs will be suffering the hardest.

“Our message is simple, why not swap one of your festive coffees for a donation to help us support even more distressed families. You could help a parent in real need and your gift will be appreciated and have a lasting impact.”

According to the ONS, The Consumer Prices Index recently rose by 4.2 per cent, the highest 12-month inflation rate for ten years.

Increased costs across food, transport and housing have led to 2.4 million children living in food insecure households in the UK. There are currently over 32,000 households in Southwark who rely on Universal Credit.

St Giles charity runs a network of food Pantries in Camberwell, Kensington and Stamford Hill to help families who are struggling to make ends meet – offering nutritious, healthy food in return for a subscription of £3.50 – and also offer expert advice and support on issues trapping clients in poverty.

The aim is to offer families a sustainable route out of poverty, and tries to enable them to become independent within six months.

The staff all have direct experience of these issues themselves and are now employed by St Giles to help others make positive progress.

The playground is one of four across the Ronald McDonald Houses in London, and part of a project involving fifteen new playgrounds all built from over a million Happy Meal toys.

Ronald McDonald Houses provide accommodation for families of children being treated in hospital, so that they can stay nearer their child.

The company is also donating £250,000 to Ronald McDonald House Charities UK this December, to pay for 10,000 nights stay for families, and have contributed an estimated £100

Local people received a letter from the NHS inviting them to participate in the trial, while anyone who age 50-77 who hadn’t had a cancer diagnosis or treatment in the last three years could request to join the trial if they are registered at a GP in Elephant and Castle or at a practice elsewhere in the boroughs of Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham.

Appointments will take place at the mobile clinic that has been operating on the Old Kent Road for two weeks.

Nobody is above the law

E

arlier this month I spent ten days isolating after a positive Covid test. It’s hugely important that everyone continues to follow the rules and gets vaccines and booster jabs when contacted by the NHS to help our community through what looks set to be another tough winter, especially with the new Omicron variant circulating.

Most people have followed the rules throughout the pandemic, but it is worrying that senior Conservatives seem to think they are above the law. The Health Secretary responsible for devising the rules broke them, but was let off by the wayward Prime Minister. Johnson also let Dominic Cummings off when his closest Special Advisor travelled to Barnard Castle, and he refused to sack the Home Secretary when she was found guilty of breaking the ministerial code. When a Tory was found guilty of an ‘egregious’ breach of the rules on cash for questions, Johnson tried to retrospectively change the system to get him off the hook. Now we discover Downing Street was holding Christmas parties last year while London was under severe lockdown restrictions and most people were cancelling plans. I followed the rules and did not see my own dad. Sadly, it was to be his last Christmas.

MP for Bermondsey & Old Southwark 1,681 Fixed Penalty Notices to people breaking Covid rules. I’ve been contacted by some people in Southwark – furious that they were punished whilst Tories get away scot free. It cannot be right that there is one rule for the public and another for the Prime Minister and I’ve urged Commissioner Cressida Dick to open a formal investigation.

There also seems to be one rule for private rail companies and another for London when it comes to transport funding from this Government.

Ministers have delayed a new funding arrangement for Transport for London despite condition-free bailouts for private companies elsewhere. Every major capital city in the world receives national funding for its transport network, but Johnson ended that crucial help for us and we now face potential cuts to tube and bus services as a result.

Without a settlement, we could see delays to the Bakerloo Line extension; the long-awaited escalators at the Elephant and Castle station withheld; and the possible closure of the Rotherhithe Tunnel which needs urgent maintenance.

This won’t just have a terrible effect in Southwark: the delays and failure to invest will cost jobs even in Yorkshire where tube trains are built. A fully functioning transport system is essential to getting our capital back on its feet and supporting jobs across the UK. London’s economy represents 23 per cent of national GDP and we were contributing £39 billion NET to the Treasury before the pandemic. If Ministers want the capital to contribute to that level again, a new settlement and resources must be provided now.

Ministers also need to deliver on their oftrepeated promise to ‘protect’ leaseholders from fire safety works to tackle shoddy cladding issues. This has been a huge concern in Southwark with people facing high bills but unable to access any of the promised help from Government.

I’m calling for VAT to be scrapped on remedial fire safety works and this proposal has gained cross-party support.

I hope Ministers accept the amendment to the Building Safety Bill to deliver for leaseholders and, just for once, to deliver on their promises despite so many breaches of their own manifesto commitments.

Another tough winter, but Southwark stands together Kieron Williams Southwark Council leader

his Christmas is sadly beginning to feel reminiscent of last year, with a new surging COVID variant and growing questions over festive gatherings.

We had all hoped for a more normal festive season but with infections now rising even faster than in December last year, I urge everyone to follow the latest Covid rules and guidelines, so we can all help keep each other safe.

The most important thing we can do to protect all those we hold dear is to get vaccinated and get our booster jabs.

One dose makes a real difference, two is even better and the booster gives you the most protection. So please, book your next appointment today.

It is a year since I visited the opening of our first Covid vaccination site in Southwark, and it has been wonderful to visit so many since. Including to have my own jabs. I want to thank all the NHS and council staff and local volunteers who have worked so brilliantly together to get the lifesaving vaccine out to so many people. As we speak, the council is working hand in hand with the NHS to more than double the number of vaccines we are able to provide in Southwark every day, so everyone can get their next dose.

As we head towards another uncertain Christmas, I know many people will be deeply upset and angry about the antics of Boris Johnson and his team.

The wide reporting of parties and quizzes at Downing Street last year, while the rest of us had to sacrificed so much, have left even Boris’s own MPs outraged. It seems that while thousands of families could not visit relatives in hospital, the very top of this conservative government didn’t believe their own rules applied to them. Whether it was the former Health Secretary caught out in his office or the Prime Minister and his team in Number 10.

This insulting behaviour is especially cruel given the fact that only weeks ago the Tory government insisted on cutting universal credit once again, hitting the poorest the hardest, by taking an additional £20 per week from incomes.

This means there are 3.5 million children across the UK who live in households where their income has been cut by over £1000 a year in one stroke. Two million working people could be pushed into debt by this cut. Take this together with the government’s social care plans I have written about previously, which see the less well-off pay more while the wealthier will pay less; it is clearer than ever that this government is not on your side.

In Southwark, Labour is determined to do things differently. We will continue work to tackle inequality with every decision we make, and this Christmas will be no different. This year we more than trebled the council’s emergency support budget for people struggling to get by.

We have also backed local charities with

an extra £1.6 million of funding through our Community Support Alliance.

However, we are not stopping there.

Earlier this month, the Council agreed to further investment in the Southwark Emergency Support Scheme of £2.7 million. Just over a million pounds will be dedicated to supporting children with costs of food and their essentials through schools, benefitting nearly 14,000 Southwark schoolchildren. Over £1.6 million, will provide help with home energy costs so 20,000 people don’t have to go cold in their own homes this winter.

I am also determined to make sure we don’t lose sight of those who are most at risk of falling through the net this Christmas. Throughout the pandemic we have supported nearly 300 rough sleepers with temporary accommodation and over 200 with finding a permanent home. If you are aware of anyone on the street this Christmas, please let us know through our partners at StreetLink and our council funded outreach team will visit them wherever they are in the borough, to offer support and help to find a home.

I know that for most people in Southwark the last year has been a very difficult one. Made all the more difficult by government cuts to local services and local people’s incomes. However I’m determined that the council will continue to be on your side through these though times. So together, we can improve life for everyone in Southwark.

Fly-tipping: a lack of respect for where you live

R

ubbish disposal is just one of those things - you don’t notice it’s a problem until it’s staring you in the face.

The news that Southwark ranks so poorly when it comes to fly-tipping should not be taken lightly.

It’s hard to feel proud to be part of a borough when you can’t walk down the street without coming across piles of rubbish.

As much as one can make the argument that the figure is only so high because of higher levels of reporting in Southwark, over 20,000 incidents of fly-tipping is not to be sniffed at in any case.

Key to this issue is the current legislation on the matter - Southwark does not seem to understand how to stop people fly-tipping.

Firstly, you have the £25 charge for disposing of bulky items. While this is not rare among London boroughs, for those who have no choice but to dispose of something like a sofa or a fridge, it just becomes a tax to do so legally.

It’s hard to blame the individual in these cases, and we should seriously consider the Lib Dems’ proposal to remove this charge.

But it isn’t just the lack of incentive to deal with waste legally - it’s the only half-hearted attempt to discourage doing it illegally that is creating problems for Southwark.

Despite ranking 11th for reported fly-tipping incidents, Southwark ranks 198th for enforcement action against illegal dumping.

As one concerned resident said, fly-tipping is as much an issue of attitude as anything else. A willingness to throw rubbish on the side of the street isn’t just plain laziness - it’s a lack of respect for where you live, for the livelihoods of those around you.

For some, that respect has to be earned, and a council that charges its people so much to dump legally, while scarcely matching the need to bring the weight of the law against those who don’t, is not earning that respect.

A play about colour In black & white

Dinah Washington’s cool, Jazzbased version of Trouble In Mind welcomed the audience into the Dorfmann to see Alice Childress’ Trouble In Mind as she sang of going down to the river where she hoped the blues would leave her. Sixty-six years on from when the play was premiered in New York the blues are still very much here and that’s what makes this 1950s piece of work seem like it could have been written in Lockdown, writes Michael Holland.

A mixed bunch of black and white actors comes together to rehearse a new anti-lynching play that is supposed to be progressive and a chance to see the two communities coming together as one. But the black people are wary and warn each other to laugh at the white director’s jokes - but not too much: ‘They don’t like to see black people happy…’

The first half shows the director, Al Manners (Rory Keenan), telling the cast he is seeking the ‘truth’ in this production, while the black actors are keeping the director happy as best they can with flattery and mwa-mwa kisses, which often means giving up some of their dignity.

In one scene where Wiletta (Tanya Moodie) sings a sad song, Manners riles her up by demanding that she dig deep into her life experiences - into her ‘truth’ - to make herself sadder. And then, when she does, she sings the blues from the heart. In fact, Wiletta sings the blues so good the director can’t handle her truth.

This is the turning point for Act 2 where rehearsals have moved on and we discover that the script, and the director, are once again showing the black race as ignorant, subservient, and like the stereotypical ‘Hello, Massa’ people from earlier plays and films - far from any of the black cast’s ‘truth’.

Manners would, in real life, do what she is expected to do in this fictional work. He counters with ‘It’s not easy being white,’ which caused universal hoots of derision from the audience.

Moodie gives a brilliant example of all the male and female black stereotypes as she berates her director, and all while her black colleagues are more worried about losing their jobs than their self-respect.

with his leading lady and we were left not knowing if he came back to direct the play, or if Wiletta got fired. But even with the loose ends untied, the ending is beautiful, truly beautiful.

The play did not premiere on Broadway in 1955 because the producers wanted the author to make it more ‘likeable’ for the predominantly white theatre-going audience. She refused.

Trouble in mind, I’m blue

10 Downing Street may be the focus of today’s rounds of political drama on these shores but a mile away at the Young Vic, James Graham’s new play, Best of Enemies, takes us across the pond and back to 1968, writes Christopher Peacock.

The inspiration for this play is the Robert Gordon and Morgan Neville 2015 documentary about the live televised debates between Gore Vidal and William F Buckley Jr during the presidential nomination conventions of the Republican and Democrat parties.

The tale of the tape is that in ’68, ABC was a distant 3rd in the race for ratings against the two other news broadcasters in the States, so in an attempt to gain viewers they opted for a different strategy to cover the conventions and looked to bring in commentators rather than journalists to put across their views.

Pitching Republican against Democrat to spark debate they got Buckley, a man of the establishment with his ideas of a new Right, and Vidal as the controversial public intellectual with his own ideas for a new Left. It comes as no surprise to us all who follow modern politics that for ABC the fieriest of the exchanges between the two brought the station its highest viewing figures.

But I won’t be blue always, ‘cause the sun’s gonna shine In my backdoor some day.

Almost seven decades on and black people are still waiting for their sun to shine.

Cameos from cultural icons of the day are played brilliantly by the cast and Bunny Christie’s television studio set is visually engaging. Interplay between the cast and video in the production produces some great moments.

Charles Edwards plays all the rehearsed wit of Vidal with deft ease. The colourblind casting of David Harewood, making a return to the UK stage for the first time in 9 years, works as he gets the huge presence and caricatured ticks of Buckley down to a tee.

Jeremy Harrin guides this Headlong/ Young Vic co-production with well-paced direction that gives space for the audience to appreciate the performances. Ensemble set pieces are used to narrate the climate outside the studio doors. It is only at the epilogue, where we move away from what actually took place to look at an imagined encounter between Vidal and Buckley that James Graham’s script loses its subtlety. He draws a line from today, through the TV lens, right to the explosive debate episode to show how politics has become so polarised in the USA and the UK, where popularity and celebrity have taken precedence over policy and competency.

Festive musical

Ambitions to send out a powerful message of positivity to the local community prove successful in Theatre Peckham’s latest festive musical production, The Wonderful, directed by Suzann McLean, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor.

Taking a familiar Christmas favourite The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a starting point, the creative team have delivered a modern production that explores current issues including diversity, integrating Afro-futurism, technology, magic and fantasy, amongst others.

Ashleigh-Mae Schoburgh-Crooks, plays Efe, the modern-day Dorothy, a young black girl who, with her faithful dog TikTok, are swept away from Peckham Road to the land of Ozander.

Efe’s journey proves an ideal theme for a typical young person to explore their place in this often-scary world, but revealing that none are typical, the play’s message confirms we’re all capable of ‘wonderful’ potential.

Discovering this results in a journey to find Mr. Wonderful, (Ray Emmet Brown), believed to hold all the answers. He’ll surely help Efe find her way back to her family in Peckham.

Singing and dancing on route she’s faced with various dilemmas, exposing issues that affect children in Peckham and overseas.

Local young actors from Theatre Peckham play a host of characters, delivering incredible performances that cleverly weave in important issues such as child labour and mineral mining, thus further cementing the importance of local community having sel -agency in this uncertain world.

Just like Dorothy, Efe befriends an amazing trio on her journey, each dealing with their own insecurities in the world. Manne-Quin, works through his disinterest in academic merits in favour of expressing artistic flair for fashion; Mane Man a young black man exposes the pressure on young black men facing danger on the streets who need the courage to explore healthy fear that encourages valuing one’s life, and there’s Cyri a cyborg, isolated from human emotions and by communicating factually raises questions of identity alongside the relentless use of technology that is threatening community relations.

Efe’s journey delivers messages in such an affectionate and fun way that this is a fabulous show. A production full of community warmth, exceptional creativity and a pure joy to watch...Book now!

kennington park and the chartist movement

New history hut reveals pivotal role of park in C19th movement The leafy pathways of Kennington Park may not conjure up images of groundbreaking social activism - but, as revealed by a new ‘history hut’ in the park, it played a pivotal role in the Chartist movement in the 19th century, writes Charles Harrison...

Chartism, taking its name from the 1838 People’s Charter, refers to a national movement for political reform from 1838 to 1857. This Charter, which the movement aimed to bring into law, called for six reforms to improve democracy in Britain.

These reforms included a vote for every man over 21, as long as they were ‘of sound mind’ and not undergoing punishment for a crime. They also included payment for Members of Parliament, so that any working man

could work as an MP without relying on pre-existing finances.

While it was seen at the time as a movement for political radicals, Chartism soon saw widespread popularity due to its opposition of wage cuts and help for the unemployed, which appealed to working class people across the country.

The movement came to a head in 1848, when a mass Chartist meeting on what was then called Kennington Common was arranged by Londonbased activist William Cuffay. Cuffay, despite leaving very little historical records, is now regarded by historians as one of the more influential working class radicals.

The descendant of slaves who had been taken from Africa, records show that Cuffay made several inspiring speeches at the Kennington Common demonstration. A daguerrotype - an old form of photography - of the event is now the oldest surviving image of a protest in British history.

The British government at the time responded to Cuffay and the Chartists with immense force and intimidation, altering legislation against them and hiring an additional 100,000 special constables to counter the peaceful protest.

movement. William Cuffay was convicted of “conspiring to levy war” against the Queen in a trial in which he stated that the jury were not his equals, but instead represented a biassed middle class. Cuffay and the Chartists were referred to in the press as “the black man and his party”, as well as other racist language.

As a result of the trial, Cuffay was transported to Australia, and died a pauper years later in Tasmania.

The Chartism movement faded soon afterwards.

Shortly after the historical 1948 demonstration, Kennington Common was enclosed and turned into the public park we know it as today.

While Chartism itself did not directly cause any reforms, its demands were taken on by other reformers, and in 1867 urban working men were given the vote, while in 1911 the payment of MPs was introduced. Full, equal suffrage for men and women was eventually achieved in 1928.

The pivotal role that Chartism, William Cuffay and Kennington Park played in the foundation of modern British democracy is only a part of the fascinating history of the park that can now be explored both on the new history boards in the park, and on the Friends of Kennington Park website at www.kenningtonpark.org.

NOTES: (1) These Orders would supersede similar provisions at the above locations implemented by way of experimental Orders made under section 9 of the 1984 Act (which would be revoked). (2) Exemption to the restrictions described in (a) to (g) preceding would be provided for emergency services vehicles, vehicles used for road maintenance or cleansing purposes and refuse collection; for (a) preceding, exemptions also provided for postal service, taxis and (on a discretionary basis) disabled persons vehicles (registered to Southwark resident ‘blue badge’ holders), rapid response healthcare workers vehicles and SEND vehicles. Angels went in front in the 28th minute through Joe Turner’s penalty and again in the 79th-minute when Aaron Smith-Joseph’s cross-shot squirmed through the hands of goalkeeper Charlie Grainger.

But the Hamlet responded each time, first through Jordan Green who raced on to a through-ball to finish in the 69th minute.

And Gavin Rose’s side found a spectacular leveller to make it 2-2 when Jordan Higgs rifled home from 25 yards with six minutes left.

Dulwich started well as Gio McGregor’s free-kick from 25 yards was tipped over by Jonathan Henly.

Green then found McGregor whose low cross was blocked for a corner at the near post.

Tonbridge got the breakthrough when Grainger saved Turner’s effort but in the ensuing melee the referee spotted a foul by the visitors. Turner beat Grainger this time from twelve yards.

The hosts had a chance to make it 2-0 when Jack Embery rounded Grainger but Jack Holland got back to force the Angels player to run the ball out.

The visitors wanted a penalty after Green tussled with left-back Jerry O’Sullivan but referee Joel Mannix wasn’t interested.

Stansfeld flower to seal Vase win

The Stans started well against a side a tier above them and Macey Malyon had a left-footed shot from sixteen yards straight at Frimley goalkeeper James Ferguson.

However, the hosts fell behind as George Keenan slotted under Jack Rankin in the twelfth minute.

Stansfeld’s Dan Parkinson flashed a free-kick narrowly past the left-hand post and then sent another effort from open play just wide of the top corner.

Parkinson shot straight at Ferguson as the Stans went into the break behind.

Stansfeld got a deserved equaliser in the 55th minute when Ollie Milton was slipped through beyond Frimley Green’s defence and he made the most of the chance by burying the ball into the bottom-left corner.

Ten minutes later, Stansfeld took the lead when a corner from the left flashed across the six-yard box and hit the leg of Sam Smith before going in.

Frimley Green’s William Neville went close to an equaliser in the 70th minute but his effort was wide.

Stansfeld made sure of their progress with eight minutes left when substitute Ross Morley fired home from 20 yards.

Ollie Milton almost got a fourth when he cut in from the right wing and had an effort towards goal which was well saved by Ferguson.

Frimley Green had one late chance as a 25-yard shot from Ross Ewen ended up in the gloves of Stansfeld goalkeeper Rankin.

Southwark Darts set for thrilling climax

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk THE SOUTHWARK Individual Darts League will come to a thrilling climax at the Spots and Stripes club (Arch 64 Ewer St SE1 0NR) after the Christmas break, as former champion Chris Hogg, rising star Cameron Crabtree, Bethnal Green’s John Hind, and league champion Ricky Martin do battle in the Grand semi-finals.

The winners of the two semi-finals will progress to Finals Night on Friday, January 7, with both Martin and Crabtree posting unbeaten league seasons.

In the Catdromeda Cup, Division One champion Josh

Williams plays Craig Searle, and Hogg will again meet Crabtree if the former can get past Bobby Redding in a delayed earlier round.

In the Darts GB Trophy, it’s a battle of the Philippines as Division Three champion John Michael Dang-ay takes on Division Four champion Jay Baniaga, while David Peyre will play Adam Cunningham.

The Lions can be a very frustrating watch at times with their inconsistency. It seems like it’s one step forward and then two steps back.

How can they be so good one week and abject the next? From arguably their best performance of the season against Birmingham City the previous weekend to arguably their worst seven days later.

And this latest setback in front of a sellout away end of 2,356. They deserved better.

The mood in the camp and around the club going into this game should have been very good following that comprehensive win over Lee Bowyer’s Blues and after drawing London rivals Crystal Palace at home in the third round of the FA Cup. Well, the mood was flattened by a poor display and resulting deserved defeat at London Road.

Boss Gary Rowett unsurprisingly named an unchanged side from the one that beat Birmingham, but it did not bring the same level of performance. Far, far from it.

Any logical reading of form would have said Peterborough were there for the taking. They hadn’t won in seven games,

hadn’t scored in five, the latter their worst run in 20 years.

Yet it was the hosts who started stronger, dominating possession and territory. They did give up the first chance of the game as Danny McNamara’s cut-back was blasted over by George Evans.

It was looking increasingly likely that the only way Millwall would score would be to hit on the counter-attack and that is how they took the lead. Scott Malone received a pass from Murray Wallace on the left and played forward to Jed Wallace running into the inside-left channel. Wallace went past Josh Knight and crossed low for Tom Bradshaw to side-foot past David Cornell for his fifth goal in seven games.

That was as good as it got for Millwall.

From that moment on Darren Ferguson’s side dominated the contest. Sammie Szmodics went close after a free-kick fell to him outside the box, but his effort was right down the throat of Bartosz Bialkowski.

The Lions were struggling with balls into the box, especially from free-kicks with Bialkowski having to palm one away following a deflection.

You wouldn’t have known from their swaggering attacking play here that the Posh had been so poor in front of goal recently. Wave after wave of attack threatened to flood Millwall. Siriki Dembele was the best player on the pitch and caused the Lions problems all afternoon. No one in a white shirt seemed

to know what to do with the 25-year-old who continues to showcase his ability at this level. The only answer that Millwall had was to foul him.

The hosts had three more chances before the break. Jorge Grant fired an effort over the bar before Jack Taylor headed over from a free-kick given for another foul on Dembele.

Joe Tomlinson then curled a free-kick wide in first-half stoppage-time.

Into the second half and the same story but this time it felt like it would be a different ending for the home side. Bialkowski kept out efforts from Tomlinson and Grant, but he could only deny them for so long.

In the 64th minute, the inevitable happened. The introduction of Jonson Clarke-Harris meant the home side had someone in the box that could compete physically and win battles in the air. It had a big effect. Taylor’s ball over the top of the Lions’ defence was in the direction of Clarke-Harris running in behind.

McNamara stuck out a leg desperately trying to cut out the danger but he could only watch in horror as the ball came off his right foot and went past a helpless Bialkowski.

Four minutes later, Clarke-Harris gave Ferguson’s side the lead. It was yet another failure this season to deal with a second ball into the box as Clarke-Harris was left all alone at the back post for an easy finish from Knight’s cross.

Millwall had two decent chances late on but Cornell batted away Bradshaw’s drive and then substitute Matt Smith headed Murray Wallace’s cross wide.

Rowett cut a very frustrated figure at fulltime. The Lions boss was understandably disappointed by his side’s performance and by the inconsistent nature of the way this season continues to unfold. Every time the chance is there to close the gap on the top six, they just cannot take it. Is it a mentality problem? That’s hard to believe given there is so much experience in the squad.

Positives were few and far between.

Maybe there was only one, Bradshaw continuing his good form in front of goal. It was the second time he had scored in three consecutive games for Millwall after he scored in four in a row in 2019-20.

Jed Wallace has had a few quiet games by his standards, but he registered his sixth assist of the season. The Lions may have found a promising strike partnership in Benik Afobe and Bradshaw, but they will need Wallace to start chipping in with goals again if they are to win games.

The busy Christmas schedule is approaching and that is normally the point when fans and coaches know which part of the table they are going to be competing in for the rest of the season.

The Lions need to stop giving away these kinds of presents if they are to get themselves back in the play-off picture.

It’s fair to say that Tom Bradshaw is keeping up his end of the bargain at the moment.

Bradshaw, 29, has scored five goals in his last seven games. That’s his secondbest run of form in his fourth season with Millwall, after he scored the same number of goals in four games in 2019-20.

Ironically, the last game in that run was the one just before Gary Rowett took over.

Chats with Rowett this season have paid dividends, with Bradshaw encouraged to play off instinct more.

Former Barnsley forward Bradshaw has a remarkable record in scoring important goals. Of his nineteen goals for the Lions, only two have not been any of: an equaliser in a game; an equaliser to earn a point; putting the side in front; or a winner. The other two goals were the third and fourth in 3-0 and 4-1 wins.

It makes you think what Bradshaw could do in a more free-scoring side than Millwall.

Bradshaw, though, knows that sometimes something else is required.

Matt Smith has proven to be an effective weapon for the side, though has been used less this season.

Jed Wallace and Mason Bennett struck up a brilliantly dynamic and pacey strike partnership last term.

Benik Afobe arrived this season and has shown Premier League quality.

Going back further, when Bradshaw first arrived for a then-club record fee from Barnsley in the summer of 201819, Steve Morison and Lee Gregory were first-choice in very much a 4-4-2 under Neil Harris. That November, Bradshaw suffered a season-ending knee injury.

All of that partly explains why only 49 of Bradshaw’s 86 league games for Millwall have been starts.

Bradshaw is definitely not one of those players to throw his toys out of the pram if he’s not selected, but that doesn’t mean he’s not going to put up a big fight to keep the shirt.

“Every footballer wants to play every game. You wouldn’t be a footballer if you didn’t have that desire to play week-in, week-out and score goals and get wins,” Bradshaw said.

“But we’ve got the strongest squad that we’ve had, since I’ve been at the club, this season. We’ve got a lot of quality and quality in depth in all areas, not just the forward areas.

“So it is something that you just have to accept and you’ve got to make it as hard as

“Tactically some games require different personnel to be the most effective of teams. It’s something you understand as a player, but it’s also about trying your very best to keep the shirt to try and stay in the team even if there is a tactical change.”

Millwall could do with Bradshaw’s goal touch this weekend. Bradshaw scored a lovely goal last Saturday, finishing off an excellent move, but it counted for little as Peterborough came back to win 2-1.

Millwall’s inconsistency in recent weeks has frustrated fans. Millwall’s two defeats in fifteen was not just a source of pride but seemed to be setting them up for a sustained top-six challenge. But part of that run has overlapped into a sequence of only one win in seven.

The Preston game this Saturday completes the first half of the season.

Lose and the Lions could be eight points off the play-offs going into the second half.

Rowett has said more than once this season The Den has felt edgy. Bradshaw insists that doesn’t affect the players.

“It’s a really odd thing because you really notice it when you’re on the bench or sidelines,” Bradshaw said. “But it’s something that hasn’t affected me when

I’ve been playing because you’re so focused on your job and doing the right things for the team.

“It’s so loud you can barely hear your team-mate next to you. It’s not something that affects us too much. We know our roles whatever formation that we play.

“It’s something you have to deal with anyway as a professional footballer, you’ve been in it a long enough time.

“Edginess within the stadium shouldn’t affect us at all.”

Loanee Lions duo eyeing promotion challenges

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MAHLON ROMEO looks set for a third League One play-off challenge of his career as Portsmouth continued their good run by beating Morecambe 2-0 last Saturday.

Romeo played the full game at right wing-back as Danny Cowley’s side stretched their unbeaten run to eight games.

Marcus Harness scored his tenth goal of the season and Connor Ogilvie was also on target for the hosts.

Pompey are eighth, a point off the play-

offs, and travel to AFC Wimbledon this Saturday.

In League One, Alex Mitchell was on the losing side for just the second time in eighteen games for Leyton Orient as they were defeated 2-1 by Crawley Town at Brisbane Road.

Goals by George Francomb and Kwesi Appiah put the visitors 2-0 up.

Kenny Jackett’s side got one back through goalkeeper Glenn Morris’ own goal but finished with ten men after captain Darren Pratley was sent off in injury-time for a second bookable offence.

Mitchell played 74 minutes. Former Millwall players Tony Craig and Jack

Powell were in the Crawley side.

Orient are ninth and travel to Tranmere Rovers on Saturday.

Also in League Two, Isaac Olaofe missed Sutton United’s 2-2 draw away to Bradford City with a dead leg.

Sutton are sixth and host Harrogate this weekend.

In National League, right-back Dan Moss made his 20th appearance of the season as Adi Yussuf scored the only goal in the ninth minute to give Yeovil a 1-0 win at home to Barnet.

Yeovil move up to ninth, four points off the play-offs, ahead of their next league game away to Torquay United on Boxing

Day. The Glovers are at home to Woking in the FA Trophy this Saturday.

It was a tenth game of the season for Junior Tiensia at bottom club Dover Athletic, who lost 2-1 at second-last King’s Lynn Town.

Former Lions striker Alfie Pavey equalised for the visitors between Josh Barrett’s double.

Dover have four draws and fifteen defeats in nineteen games and are on minus-eight points.

Dover host Bromley in the FA Trophy on Saturday. Their next league game is at home to Dagenham & Redbridge on

Boxing Day. In National League South, defender Arthur Penney’s Welling United lost 3-1 away to Dorking Wanderers.

Tom Derry put the visitors a goal up before Niall McManus levelled four minutes later.

Barry Fuller made it 2-1 in the 59th minute and Alfie Rutherford added a third in the first minute of injury-time.

Welling dropped to seventeenth in the table. The Wings are at home to Dulwich Hamlet on December 26.

Boss puzzles over inconsistency

The one that aggressively attacked second-place Bournemouth and should have defeated Scott Parker’s team?

The side that utterly dominated Lee Bowyer’s Birmingham City?

Or the limp team that meekly lost at Hull City and Peterborough United and conceded soft goals to Championship strugglers?

It’s anyone’s guess.

Add in to that Jed Wallace is an injury doubt to go along with the absent Ryan Leonard and Daniel Ballard and it’s a bit gloomy heading into Saturday’s game at The Den. But then that’s when Millwall usually produce, when their backs are against the wall in one way or another.

The Lions have proved they have the resilience to rebound from poor performances. They defeated Sheffield United away after a bad home defeat against Luton, beat Reading after losing to Huddersfield and produced probably their best display of the season to beat Birmingham 3-1 after going down 2-1 at Hull.

But their last four league defeats were immediately preceded by three wins and that excellent performance against Bournemouth. You can understand why Rowett says it is a “conundrum”.

Another puzzle this season is what has happened the defence. Millwall haven’t kept a clean sheet in six games, the second time this campaign they have had that sequence in the league.

The Lions have just four clean sheets in the Championship in 22 games compared to eight at the same point last season.

Rowett felt that should have been a wake-up call at London Road.

“At that point you think, ‘okay, if that doesn’t liven us up then nothing will’.

Then the ball goes out wide, we amble

out to the ball, we let the ball go into the box and [Jonson] Clarke-Harris is on his own at the back post to tap in.

“Again, ridiculous goal to concede, to be honest.

“We haven’t kept enough clean sheets this season, I think we have four. Sometimes in away games

you’ve got to dig in and be resilient.

Sometimes you’ve got to use the ball better and we fell short in both areas.

“The inconsistency has killed us. One game we use the ball really well, the next game we’re terrible on the ball.

One game we look in very good shape and are aggressive, the next game we

impact. The former AFC Wimbledon attacker got an assist on his debut and then scored three goals in consecutive games before sustaining a serious hamstring tear against Tranmere Rovers.

He had also been nominated for League Two’s August player of the month before the injury forced him to return to his parent club for his rehabilitation.

Burey had hoped to go back to Hartlepool last month before he suffered a setback, but he came through the first half of the under-23 game as the Lions brought the Bluebirds’ eleven-game winning streak in the league this season to an end.

A number of footballers have filmed themselves or been filmed inhaling nitrous oxide in recent years, including England stars Jack Grealish and Raheem Sterling.

Supplying the drug for recreational use is illegal under the 2016 Psychoactive Substances Act. It is not yet illegal to possess the drug.

Millwall confirmed to the News

that an internal investigation into the alleged incident is underway. The News understands that, currently, Burey’s return to Hartlepool is not in jeopardy.

Meanwhile, Burey was joined in the under-23 team by Ben Thompson last week.

Kevin Nugent’s side faced a daunting task against table-toppers Cardiff, who were managed by former Millwall captain Steve Morison earlier this season before he took over as senior boss.

Thompson was involved in the only goal of the game in the 37th minute as his brilliant long ball found Kai Garande on the left and he crossed for Tyrese Briscoe to finish.

Millwall’s next game is away to Swansea City on Monday, December 20.

Burey video no laughing matter

The Sun reported last weekend that Burey, 20, appeared to be inhaling the substance, also known as ‘laughing gas’ or ‘hippy crack’ while filming in a car with two friends.

The report said Burey – who is recovering from a hamstring injury before a planned return to his loan with Hartlepool United – posted the video on Snapchat before deleting it ten minutes later.

Burey made his competitive comeback after being out since September when he played the first 45 minutes for Millwall in their 1-0 Professional Development League win against Cardiff City at The Den last Friday.

“That’s fine if you want to be a mid-table, average side in the Championship but we don’t want to do that. Every chance we get to step into the higher echelons in the league we just seem to not quite have the bravery to get there or at least try to get there.

“That is hugely disappointing.

“Is it mentality to come to places like this, the likes of Hull and Peterborough where maybe because we’ve been a decent side for two-and-a-bit years that we just now can’t seem to dig in in these types of games? I don’t know.

“I’ll have to get to the bottom of it. When you play with that inconsistency it’s hard to put your finger on something.”

Millwall face another side this season with a new manager. The Lions played Nottingham Forest and Middlesbrough in their managers’ respective first games. This will be Ryan Lowe’s second, after he marked his first match in charge after moving from Plymouth to take over from the sacked Frankie McAvoy with a 2-1 win at home to Barnsley last weekend.

through that Millwall’s Championship fixture against Preston North End at the Den scheduled for this Saturday, has been called off due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

Millwall are the latest club to be hit

by an outbreak since the Omicron variant arrived in the UK. In the Premier league Brighton’s game against Tottenham was called off last weekend, and then Brighton’s home fixture against Man Utd was

called off this midweek.

Fans will face proof-of-entry requirements at outside turnstiles

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE confirmed they have received “legislative guidance on Plan B restrictions” as they prepare for new proofof-entry requirements at The Den.

Supporters will need proof of a negative lateral flow test or vaccine certification to enter the stadium, starting from this Saturday against Preston North End. The measures came into effect this Wednesday, with clubs legally required to enforce them.

The stricter rules were introduced by the government in response to the arrival of the omicron variant of

Covid-19 to the UK and rising cases.

Millwall provided details of what supporters need for the next home game. Millwall said: “[The] club has now received legislative guidance on Plan B Covid-19 restrictions.

“As communicated previously, proof of a negative lateral flow test or vaccine certification is now a requirement for entry to matches at The Den. “The government guidance issued on Monday night stipulates that the vaccine cards presented after your jab is not permissible evidence and you therefore will need to download the Covid pass.

“Supporters without smartphones can obtain a letter from the NHS which proves their vaccination

status.

“The club appreciates that it will be difficult to receive any new letter by this Saturday’s game and in such cases, a negative lateral flow test result will be sufficient.

“As well, the club can now confirm that supporters under the age of 18 do not need to present any such evidence. Showing their season/ membership card, or match ticket, will suffice.

“In a change to previous communications, the Covid checks carried out by staff will now take place at the temporary turnstiles first installed early last season.

These are situated at the Zampa Road and Surrey Canal Road gates. All foot traffic should pass

through these two entrances. The Stockholm Road entrance is for vehicles only.

“This adjustment helps to ensure a wider Covid-secure environment within the entire stadium footprint.

“As said before, supporters are politely advised to arrive earlier than they normally would to help ensure prompt and efficient entry through the checkpoint.

“The club again requests that supporters are understanding of the fact that these restrictions are government legislation and therefore legally enforceable. They are not the choice of the club and we therefore remind fans to please respect and work with staff who are carrying out checks.”

Boss outlines ‘ideal’ January scenario EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett has admitted he doesn’t know if the injuries to Ryan Leonard and Daniel Ballard and the need for defensive reinforcements will affect any other business the club intended to try to do in January.

The Lions need at least one defender in the next transfer window with Leonard and Ballard both set to be out until at least late into February.

Millwall had been planning to target another attacking player next month as they are again struggling to score goals this season, averaging just over one a game in the league.

Millwall have been linked with a loan move for Arsenal’s 20-year-old striker Folarin Balogun.

Asked if any defensive moves in the transfer window could affect potential business elsewhere, Rowett said: “I don’t know. We’re not a club that necessarily has a fixed budget.

“It’s just a case of we see what’s out there and see what we feel we need.

John [Berylson] has already tried to support that to a reasonable level.

“There are probably three or four areas in an ideal world that I would potentially strengthen. But, of course, that’s going to be a little bit depending on what players go out and what players stay.

“It’s a hard one to be definitive with but certainly we want to try to strengthen in January if at all possible.”
