bermondsey mp reports pm’s office to police over lockdown parties claim

Londoners were living under strict Covid rules when two big parties were held at Downing Street late last year, according to an article in the Daily Mirror.

One was a leaving event for a senior staff member in November 2020 - when the UK was in its second lockdown - where Prime Minister Boris Johnson gave a speech, it was reported. The other was in the runup to Christmas when London was in the strict Tier 3 of Covid restrictions, they claimed.

At both events between 40 and 50 people were crammed into a room "cheek by jowl", the paper reported.

Coyle said in a letter to Scotland Yard: "I followed the rules and did not see my own dad last Christmas, and, sadly, it was to be his last.

"Many other constituents followed the Government rules, cancelling family gettogethers in order to minimise risk and protect the NHS. "The sense of outrage from constituents is palpable that they followed the rules whilst those responsible for devising and enforcing them were breaching them at

The Labour MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark said the "sense of outrage from constituents is palpable" given that they followed the rules, while "those responsible for devising and enforcing them" allegedly broke them.

Coyle and another Labour backbencher, Barry Gardiner, have both asked the Met Police to investigate the alleged breaches.

Camberwell theatre uses stage to help those with dementia

People with dementia will see their life on stage as a result of a new scheme by Camberwell-based Dot Collective, writes Charles Harrison...

The collective have received an £18,000 grant from City Bridge Trust, the City of London Corporation’s charity funder, for its ‘A Map To You’ project.

Professional playwrights work with people with dementia and their families, taking elements from their lives and incorporating them into a short play which the participant and their families can watch.

As part of the scheme participants will get an audio, video and text version of the play to keep.

£31,678,493 for sustainable Christmas meal shopping

Research by Barclay’s shows that Londoners are happy to spend an additional £5.10 each on their Christmas meals if the produce is sustainably sourced, writes Charles Harrison...

This represents a potential extra £31,678,493 to London’s GDP. More than half of Londoners suggested they were more environmentally conscious this Christmas due to media attention.

When comparing total sales from January to November 2021 to January to November 2019, the researchers also found that spending in November has grown by 24 per cent year-on-year since 2019.

dixon-fyle ‘keen’ as mp harman plans to end 40 year career exclusive

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk After nearly 40 years in the role, the MP for Camberwell and Peckham will not be standing in the next election, sparking speculation about her possible successor.

The longest-serving female MP Harriet Harman this week announced her intention to stand down in the next election, having first been elected in 1982.

One possible candidate to succeed her is Community Champion for the West Central Area Dora Dixon-Fyle, who said that while Harriet is “irreplaceable,” she would “relish” the opportunity to take on the role.

Aged 71, Harriet is often dubbed “Mother of the House”, and has held a large number cabinet positions in both opposition and government.

She had two brief stints as leader of the Labour Party, after after Gordon Brown and Ed Miliband stepped down.

She is known for championing feminist causes in Parliament, including a long-standing campaign against topless Page 3 models - which eventually led to The Sun ditching semi-naked models in 2015.

In her letter to the party where she stated her intention to stand down, which she shared on her Twitter profile, she said: “I entered the Commons as one of only 11 Labour women MPs in a parliament that was 97 per cent men.

Now there are 104 Labour women and across all parties women MPs are a ‘critical mass’.

“But there remains much more to be done till women genuinely share political power with men on equal terms and until women in this country are equal.

“I will leave the House of Commons with my feminism, my belief in Labour and my enthusiasm for politics undimmed.”

Possible successor Dora Dixon-Fyle

Harriet Harman MP Dora Dixon-Fyle was full of praise for Harriet as she confirmed her own interest in the role to the News.

“She’s very intelligent and politically savvy,” Dora said. “Whatever led her to make the decision to stand down, I bet she’s thought, ‘I’ve got to put the people of Camberwell and Peckham first.'

“She’s done so much for so many communities, and is a great role model.”

While she was full of admiration for Harriet’s career, Dora also stated her own interest in taking up the mantle.

“It’s a fantastic constituency,” she said.

“But there’s so much to be done and I’d like to think I’ve got the energy.

“I very much hope I’ll be on the list.

I will work hard to be there because I believe that I can make a difference.”

Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing Evelyn Akoto is also thought

to be a possible replacement for Harriet.

Claire Sheppard, who ran against Harriet as the Green Party’s candidate for Camberwell and Peckham last year, said of her departure: “It was a surprising bit of news. I felt like she had one last term in her, and honestly I was looking forward to running against her again.

“I quite enjoyed doing so last time.”

In terms of whether the MP’s choice would impact Claire’s chances in the next election, she said: “It will depend whether I’m chosen as the Green Party candidate, and also who Southwark Labour choose.

“As a younger woman, women like Harriet Harman being in Parliament got me interested in politics. I’d like to say thank you to her for her service.”

covid cases soar again in the borough

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk New Covid-19 cases rose by nearly 40 per cent in Southwark again this week, as Health Secretary Sajid Javid said the new Omicron variant was circulating in the UK.

New infections shot up to 1,442 in Southwark in the week from November 30 to December 6, up from 1034 the previous week - which itself was up more than 40 per cent from the week before.

Cases continued to rise across south-east London. Lambeth saw new infections go up to 1,571 across the week, an increase of about 36 per cent. In Lewisham new cases went up by 40 per cent to 1,489. Greenwich had a huge rise of 58 per cent to 1,520.

Increases in Bexley and Bromley were just under 30 per cent. There were 1,923 new cases in Bromley, with 1,298 in Bexley.

The monthly increase in cases was even more marked. This week infections were up 150 per cent in Southwark compared to the week from November 2-November 9. There were similar monthly increases in Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich and Bromley.

Cases rose by slightly less in Greenwich, but were still up 86 per cent compared to the month before.

Despite new cases continuing to rise steeply, deaths recorded within four weeks of a Covid test remained at around the same level in south-east London, at fourteen, compared to fifteen the week before.

Southwark's infection rate rose to 394 per 100,000 people, up from 276. The borough is still towards the lower end of UK local authorities for infection rate, but is considerably higher up the list than last week.

It comes as health secretary Sajid Javid told MPs on Monday (December 6) that there were cases of the Omicron variant - which is more easily passed on - that were not linked to international travel.

That means the virus is spreading in the community in the UK. There were 336 Omicron cases in the UK as of Monday. Javid said that the government still does not have "a complete picture" of whether the new variant causes a worse illness than previous strains. Vaccine effectiveness against Omicron is also unclear.

The UK has put travel restrictions on eleven countries and asked anyone coming from abroad to take a PCR test before they set off and when they arrive.

southwark food bank demand up 50%

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The UK’s biggest food bank organisation handed out 50 per cent more emergency food parcels to Southwark residents in dire need from April-September this year compared to 2019, the last year before the Covid-19 pandemic hit.

The Trussell Trust distributed 4,391 food parcels over the six-month period in the borough, compared to 2,293 in 2019. Some 1,482 of these went to children - a stat that Southwark’s representative on the London Assembly called “awful beyond words”.

The pandemic has driven many people into poverty or made their conditions worse. Some 42,000 Southwark residents - nearly one in ten people in the borough - were on universal credit by October this year.

To make things worse for those people, the temporary increase in universal credit that the government brought in at the start of the pandemic was scrapped in October. At the time of the cut, the News spoke to

Rising food prices and higher energy costs have added to the squeeze for many people. Kathy Heather, of Love North Southwark food pantry in Bermondsey, said recently that demand for the service had been rising.

Marina Ahmad, Labour’s London Assembly member for Southwark and Lambeth, called on the government to reinstate the temporary extra £20 of universal credit on a permanent basis.

Ms Ahmad said: “The idea of children going without food this winter is awful beyond words. The fact that we live in one of the wealthiest countries in the world only serves to compound this

injustice.

“It is shameful that so many households in our community, and a significant number with children, have been plunged into food insecurity.

“Over the last decade, the lowest income Londoners have been left to fall through the holes that the Government has actively poked in our safety net.

“This winter, too many will be facing

the stark choice of eat or heat.”

Local Labour MP Neil Coyle told the News in October that Labour “exist to try and remove demand for food banks and end the need for food banks.”

He added: “Whilst it’s great and brilliant that [the food bank is] here and the model is brilliant, to have this additional support for people who are feeling the squeeze is brilliant – but fundamentally the system is broken.

Low incomes need tackling and the benefits system needs to be fixed.”

The Department for Work and Pensions, which manages the benefits programme, has defended the decision, saying that the increase in universal credit was always intended to be temporary.

A spokesperson added: “It was designed to help claimants through the economic shock and financial disruption of the toughest stages of the pandemic, and it has done so.

“Universal credit will continue to provide vital support for those both in and out of work and it’s right that the government should focus on our Plan for Jobs, supporting people back into work and supporting those already employed to progress and earn more.”

Why no climate deadlines?

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has drawn criticisms for not committing to a deadline for when they will clarify their climate action plan.

While the local authority has approved of proposals to further clarify its climate plan in a meeting on Wednesday last week, December 1, it did not specify when it would do so, inviting criticism from rivals.

A concern that dominated discussion in the meeting was the clarity of the council’s plan - with both Liberal Democrat councillors and XR Southwark stating it was crucial to be able to hold the council to account.

While the current climate action plan does include several identified targets, the Liberal Democrats argued it was not clear when the council was expecting to meet those targets.

This lack of clarification, they argue, prevents others from being able to assess how well they are doing in meeting their goals.

In the meeting, the Overview and Scrutiny Committee made recommendations to the council to make its targets clearer.

These recommendations were unanimously agreed upon by the council.

However, Lib Dem Councillor Hamish McCallum’s request for an amendment to require the council to define their targets’

deadlines by May 2022 was voted down.

In the meeting, he frustratedly exclaimed: “You’re refusing to set a deadline for when you’re going to set a deadline.”

One Labour councillor responded: “I don’t want to commit to this amendment when I don’t know for sure that the council has the resources to do that by the time you’re suggesting.”

This sentiment was echoed by Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency and Sustainable Development Helen Dennis, who said: “It’s a shame that the Lib Dems want to pull resource away from actually delivering on the action plan, which we know is what residents want us to focus on.

“While they are getting tied up in process, we are getting on with cutting carbon.”

When Southwark Council first unveiled their climate strategy in July 2021, 18 community groups asked for it to be rewritten. This strategy was itself unveiled two and a half years after Southwark Council declared a climate emergency.

Cllr Victor Chamberlain, Vice-Chair of the Overview and Scrutiny Committee, said: “This is a climate emergency, but Labour are keen to treat it as someone else’s problem for another day.

“Southwark Labour had a chance to rectify that, but decided to delay putting deadlines for a later day. Where is the urgency and aspiration from them in this climate emergency?”

Walworth residents fight to save popular Beehive pub 1827 building may be turned into flats

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Walworth residents have expressed overwhelming objection to an application to turn a popular pub into a two-bedroom residential area.

A historic pub originally built in 1827, the Beehive, on Carter Street, is stated to be of immense importance to local residents, and according to objectors, “contributes hugely to the character of Walworth.”

The application to the council is to transform the pub into a residential

building consisting of one two bedroom flat and a one bedroom flat.

It has seen 168 objections and only two in support on the council’s website. One objector stated: “Every option for keeping the Beehive open as a pub for the local community needs to be explored before conversion to residential is even considered.”

In November last year, the pub was named alongside two others as an asset of community value, as a result of a nomination by the Walworth Society.

This means that a community group can bid to buy the building if sold, and the seller must sell to a community group within the first six months if there is interest.

The Walworth Society stated: “There are many people locally who would be keen to contribute to making a success

of the Beehive if it was offered to the community.”

The Walworth Society also argued that the area around Carter Street was already heavily residential, and that Walworth had lost many pubs over the last 20 years.

The Beehive was built when Carter Street was first formed. According to local Diana Cochrane, the pub survived near destruction in World War 2 when a bomb exploded in the street, obliterating everything in the area except the Beehive.

The Walworth Society is urging people to object on the council’s website to try to see off the application.

It is believed the application has been submitted by the pub’s owners. The News has attempted to contact them for comment.

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Parents of a beloved Walworth primary school slated for closure are organising a petition to protest against the plans.

As revealed by the News last week, consultation on the closure of Townsend Primary School, near Salisbury Row Park, will begin on January 3 2022, with the school possibly closed by September.

A letter sent to parents from the school stated that Walworth had seen a high fall in the number of schoolchildren.

According to 2021 census data, Townsend has 173 pupils, with a maximum capacity of 262 – meaning in the last academic year, it was operating at only 66 per cent capacity.

The parents are desperate not to lose their school, which one stated is “more than just a school”, and hope a petition will encourage the council to look for other solutions.

“It just can’t happen,” said mum Katy Scriven, whose daughter Jessica, 8, is “devastated” at the decision to potentially close her school.

Parent Bridgette Findlay is also worried about what will happen to her child. Her 9 year old son has sickle cell disease,

something which is made worse by stress.

“The proposed closure of the school will not only affect his educational needs but his condition too,” she said.

“The school has about 20 or more children who are special needs and have been looked after greatly. Their parents have the same concerns that their children are going to be unsettled if the school is closed down.

“All people seem to be talking about is their financial loss, not the welfare of our children or the impact on our community.

“I can take my son to another school but who knows if they're are not the next one in queue to be closed.”

Councillor Jasmine Ali, Southwark’s deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and education, said: “Deciding whether or not to close schools is not where any of us would choose to be.

“At this stage it’s important to say that no decision has been made to close the school. This is a period of consultation and no decision will be taken until summer 2022. In the meantime, the main priority for us all is to support the parents, children and staff affected.”

Townsend Primary School has not yet responded to the News’ request for comment.

He said that the service aimed to reflect every aspect of the way the pandemic has affected people's lives, from mental to financial, as well as the disease itself.

"Like everything, our perspective on life has been changed by Covid. Of course, there have been a lot of deaths but even if you haven't lost anyone to Covid, it's been a period of reflection that reminds you of people who have died in other ways. It brings everything to the forefront of your mind."

This was the 22nd annual memorial service, which was established by the late Barry Albin-Dyer after getting the garden built in 1999.

Mr Dyer added: "Christmas brings things to the foreground. It is full of joy and happiness, but it can also remind you of people you have lost, whether they were close or less close.

Southwark Council's Labour leader has hit back at Liberal Democrat criticism of the tens of millions of pounds Southwark has given to Transport for London (TfL) for the Elephant and Castle upgrade, despite the station's uncertain future.

As we have reported, Lib Dem councillor Damian O'Brien asked council leader Kieron Williams whether the £63m Southwark is contributing to the station would be better off taken back and put into a tram network - as TfL has said it cannot pay for its part of the station amid post-Covid money troubles.

But Cllr Williams has committed again to the works, which he described as "a marathon and not a sprint". He said that the station upgrade is not "just about delivering the Bakerloo Line Extension", which would have run from Elephant and Castle down the Old Kent Road, but has since been shelved indefinitely - despite being key to supporting the tens of thousands of new homes planned for the area.

"It is also about making the station safe and accessible for everyone using the station today," Cllr Williams added.

"As well as the thousands of additional people who will need to use it as new shops, offices and homes are built around Elephant to meet the needs of our growing population and economy.

Despite Cllr Williams' strong support for the station upgrade, he refused to rule out Cllr O'Brien's tram idea.

He said that the council would continue to make the "very strong case" for the Bakerloo Line Extension, but would also explore other transport possibilities in the area, "with no options being taken off the table".

As we reported last week, TfL is also negotiating £25m from developers for new bus services on the Old Kent Road.

Cllr O'Brien said in response: “The upshot is that the Bakerloo Line

Extension has been kicked into the weeds and TfL have admitted that they haven’t yet secured the level of funding they need to redevelop the Elephant & Castle ticket hall. Both projects would have been an enormous benefit to Southwark residents and while it is acknowledged that the COVID-19 pandemic is at the root cause of these delays, we hope the mayor can negotiate an agreeable deal with [transport secretary] Grant Shapps to get these projects back on track.”

TfL's current short-term funding agreement with the government ends this week and the deadline for a new deal is Saturday (December 11). But negotiations could go on beyond this, with the current deal rolled over, if no agreement is reached on time.

street cleaners cut 20% in spite of growing population

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has been criticised for cutting the number of street cleaners it employs over the past decade by nearly 20 per cent, as rubbish piles up on the borough’s streets.

When Labour took control of the council in 2010, Southwark employed some 205 street cleaners, data shared with the News shows. By 2021 this

figure had fallen to just 169, a drop of about 18 per cent.

That’s despite a rapid rise in the borough’s population, from about 283,000 in 2010 to 317,000 in 2018, according to the most recent figures published by the Office for National Statistics.

Meanwhile, data released at the most recent full council meeting in response to a question from Liberal Democrat councillor Maria Linforth-Hall shows Southwark’s budget for street cleaning has fallen by about 21 per cent, since 2010, adjusted for inflation.

MORE LTN PROTESTS IN DULWICH

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of Dulwich have once again expressed their frustration with Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) in a demonstration on Tuesday, December 7.

Organised by Age Speaks - a group set up specifically to protest the difficulties faced by elderly residents as a result of LTNs - thirty people, many of them with disabilities and mobility issues, protested outside Southwark Council’s offices on Tooley Street earlier this week.

LTNs have been a constant source of controversy since their introduction to Dulwich in June 2020. A protest in October saw an estimated thousand people take to the streets to fight against them.

One of the key issues raised by Tuesday’s protestors were that they rely on their cars to attend GP appointments and to see friends, resulting in loneliness and other mental health issues.

Age Speaks spokesperson Jo-an Evans said: “We have written as individuals to Southwark Council about how the closures discriminate against us but they have ignored our needs and prioritised people who are able to walk and cycle.

That’s unfair”.

“Journeys take up to an hour longer which is making life hell for older people with mobility problems who have to use their cars as there is such poor public transport in the area and no east-west bus service.

“There is no good reason why Southwark Council cannot allow exemptions for elderly people and those with disabilities to go through the Dulwich Village junction and other camera-controlled restrictions”.

“I am in my seventies,” said one resident, who asked not to be named. “The

consequences of the LTNs on my medical services has had a hugely detrimental impact on my quality of life.”

The council highlighted that Dulwich has potentially the best health indicators for elderly people in Southwark.

Cabinet member for transport, parks and sport Catherine Rose said: “Driving is an important liberty for many older residents, who wish to continue driving after 70. We are providing a choice to use their cars less often, if they are able to.

“Our ultimate aim however, is to change local travel habits - Streetspace measures don’t cause pollution or congestion, cars do.

“Of course walking and cycling aren’t always possible for some people and we do not claim we have got it all right.

However we have seen real benefits and hope local residents continue to choose walking, cycling and scooting to local places, and choose cars less.

“Our final decision is based on a fair and balanced outcome for the whole borough.

Ultimately that does mean changing the way we design and use our streets, and we hope residents can appreciate this and work with us to make our borough a greener and safer place to live, visit and work in.”

The council had an annual street cleaning budget of about £7.8m in the 2010-11 financial year. This fell to around £6.1m by the 2012-13 financial year. Although street cleaning spending has risen again in the intervening years, the budget is still considerably lower than in 2010 when adjusted for inflation.

Spending rose to some £8.1m in 202021, finally getting back to and above the 2010-11 level, before stalling in 202122. Although the number itself is slightly higher than a decade earlier, in real terms it is nearly 21 per cent lower.

While cutting spending on street

cleaning, the council introduced a charge on bulky waste disposal in 2015.

These charges have added nearly £2m to the council’s coffers over the intervening six years, but Southwark is among the worst local authorities for fly-tipping in the country.

Government figures show there were 17,872 fly-tipping incidents in Southwark in 2019-20, placing it twelfth out of more than 300 local authorities in the UK. The new figures have drawn the ire of community group the Litterati, a group of volunteer litter-pickers who walk around Bermondsey and Rotherhithe picking up rubbish several times a week Roger Mallett, who helps run the group, said the cuts were “very frustrating” but “not surprising”. He added: “the amount of rubbish we see on the street is enough to make you despair sometimes.”

The Litterati applied to speak at the November full council meeting but were not successful. The group wanted to ask for more street cleaners in Southwark and to put forward the idea of having bigger bins on council estates.

Mr Mallett said that bins and street cleaning “are not seen as that important”.

The Litterati were offered a chance to speak at this week’s cabinet meeting instead.

Despite his criticism of the council, Mr Mallett was reluctant to place blame for the issue solely at the doors of Tooley Street.

“I don’t think Southwark is particularly worse than anywhere else in London… we need a nationwide campaign to educate people on the importance of not littering,” he said.

Community Action Southwark groups celebrate social action achievements

The Community Action Network brought together various social activists in Peckham Levels to share their powerful stories.

One of the most fascinating parts of the evening came from SE1 Stories, a group of social activists from the 1970s who came together to share how people in SE1 campaigned for better housing social conditions.

They highlighted how a lot of the same challenges that exist today for social activists were also an issue for activists back when they were campaigning. These included issues such as regeneration - a topic which saw a nationwide protest in October calling for local councils to refurbish existing homes rather than build new ones.

Furthermore, Sari Easton, Social Action and communities' officer at Community Southwark, and Dario Jade Blake, chair

of the Pelican Plus tenant resident association, spoke about the challenges of mobilising tenants to fight for themselves.

This echoed an explosive planning meeting last month regarding the Kingston Estate development, in which residents complained they had not been adequately consulted and the developers stated that residents had been unwilling to work with them.

Activists on Monday also shared stories of the achievements of their work. For instance, SE1 Stories spoke about Coin Street, a social enterprise community group which promotes local businesses and activities on Southbank, and the Colombo Centre, an SE1-based gym which provides free and affordable sport facilities.

Both of these, they said, would not exist without the work of social activists pushing for them.

Meanwhile, the British Afghan Society spoke about their work in helping facilitate and provide support to Afghan refugees who are waiting to be housed.

Their presentation came a few days after Southwark Council called on the government to provide more support for the roughly 200 Afghan refugees in Southwark.

Cllr Victor Chamberlain said: “Southwark Labour are failing to deliver basic services and are refusing to listen to residents asking for something as simple as emptier bins.

“These cuts to the council’s budget and street cleaning team are having a direct impact on the cleanliness of our pavements.”

Much of any council’s money comes from central government grants, as well as from taxes on residents and businesses. Money from the government to all local authorities has been slashed heavily since the election of the Conservative-led coalition in 2010 - by 37 per cent over the decade from 200910 to 2019-20. Covid-19 has exacerbated the pressures on Southwark’s finances.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark’s cabinet member for a safer, cleaner borough, said: “Over the last ten years the council has faced relentless cuts in government funding, and we have had to make difficult choices to protect the most in need in our borough.

“Like all services, the street cleaning service has seen some reductions in funding, but despite this, our excellent street cleaning team continues to maintain high standards of cleanliness across the borough, with 92 percent of our roads found to have either no or very little litter last year.

“This was despite the pressures of COVID-19 which meant the street cleaning team had to scale back most of its service to keep staff safe during the pandemic.”

Nunhead Cemetery lodge to be renovated with new cafe A unanimous vote on Monday December 6 by Southwark Council confirmed that the East Lodge building in Nunhead Cemetery will be renovated and a café installed, writes Charles Harrison...

After falling into disrepair 50 years ago, the Grade-2 listed building will now see a major renovation, with new floors and ceiling added, as well as the restoration of the historic facades of the building.

Community group Friends of Nunhead Cemetery approved of the plans - although they added that they hoped the café would not take up too much floor space “to the detriment of community facilities.”

The building was originally built in Victorian times, as an office for cemetery staff.

NEWS HITS THE STREETS WITH OPERATION VIGILANT: TACKLING VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

kit@southwarknews.co.uk In the front of an unmarked police car driving near Borough High Street, a voice comes through a walkie-talkie.

“Male exposing himself outside Borough Market,” the man says. The two more senior female police officers in the front of the car turn to each other and smile with satisfaction.

This incident on Tuesday night (December 7) soon results in the suspect being arrested for indecent exposure and affray - a relatively rare occurrence on Operation Vigilant, a pilot scheme being run in Southwark and Lambeth to help proactively tackle violence against women and girls in public areas near pubs, clubs and bars.

Police say that’s not because the operation is inefficient, but rather because they want to prevent sexual assaults and other kinds of violence against women before they happen rather than arresting someone after they have already hurt their victim.

The Central South basic command unit (BCU), which covers Southwark and Lambeth, got the idea from Thames Valley Police, who launched their own programme in 2019, largely to protect students in Oxford from sexual assaults on nights out.

Central South’s predatory offender unit, which tackles serious sexual offences, is running Operation Vigilant on twenty evenings - called deployments - the first of which was on October 23 and which will run up to the end of March next year. Tuesday night was the seventh deployment.

The unit got a £90,000 grant from the Home Office for the trial scheme. If the project is deemed a success, it could be rolled out Londonwide.

The deployments work to a seemingly simple plan. Plain clothes officers walk around a ‘nighttime economy’ hotspot - Borough High Street or the area around Waterloo station, for example - looking for people who appear suspicious.

These could be people loitering outside pubs or making rude, sexual comments.

At that point the plain clothes officers radio

uniformed officers to come in and talk to the suspicious person. This could end up in an arrest - although that has been rare on the deployments so far - or just a quick conversation.

The aim is to deter potential sexual offenders from committing crimes and gather intelligence for future use. Officers do not go inside venues.

“It’s not about the quantity of arrests, it’s about the quality of intelligence we get,” the senior officer on the deployment says.

Asked if police were concerned that their approach, which appears to be based at least partly on the spotters’ instincts about who potential criminals might be, could lead to accusations of bias and profiling, the same officer says that Operation Vigilant is “not about ruining anyone’s night out who doesn’t have criminal intent”.

The operation is data-driven - Tuesday’s deployment took place on Borough High Street because Met figures from the past two years suggested there were two one-hour time slots that evening when sexual offences were likely to occur.

Whatever the vagaries of the methods, officers seem convinced of the importance of their mission, which is only a part of the Met’s programme to tackle violence against women and girls. Some officers also appeared to be proud that four of the seven plain clothes spotters on Tuesday were women.

The operation was launched against a backdrop of rising sexual assault reporting rates after Covid restrictions lifted, officers were told in a briefing at a south London police station before the deployment began.

But Sarah Everard, the Clapham woman murdered by a serving officer in March, is also inescapable in the background of the Met’s activity to tackle sexual violence - and she was also brought up in the same briefing. The Met’s reputation took a battering in the aftermath of the murder and the way the Clapham Common vigil was policed.

“We need to tackle rape and other kinds of sexual assault quite urgently,” the senior officer on Tuesday’s deployment said. “It inflicts real trauma on victims, or survivors. It can be lifealtering in some cases.”

King’s saw 196 e-scooter injuries in 2020 Peckham flats build ten years ago face demolition

The growing number of people needing operations after being seriously injured in collisions involving e-scooters is "a concern", according to a top surgeon at King's College Hospital.

The Denmark Hill hospital saw 196 patients come into its emergency department with injuries suffered during an e-scooter collision in 2020, a report by transport safety charity Pacts found. Pacts claims that e-scooter injuries are probably under-reported nationally: the government said that there were just 484 injuries in 2020 for the whole of Great Britain.

Most of the people who come into King's simply fell over on their e-scooter, according to Raju Ahluwalia, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at the hospital.

He said: "Our day case trauma surgical lists are being impacted with an increasing volume of patients needing surgery to treat complicated fractures following e-scooter collisions.

The increasing costs, and their rate of increase, are a concern."

E-scooters, which first became popular in London last year, are mostly illegal to ride on public roads in the UK, although Southwark is among several London boroughs taking part in a trial scheme. The scheme lets people ride scooters that they have hired from Transport for London (TfL) on roads in the borough.

Despite the heavy restrictions on e-scooter use, the Pacts report said that "hundreds of thousands of them are evidently being used – illegally – on roads and in public places across

New visitor centre to free up Pumping House for exhibitions

As we have reported on several occasions, e-scooter use can be very dangerous. There has been at least one death associated with an e-scooter this year in Southwark, as well as a serious injury to a little girl.

Police are trying to crack down on shops that sell e-scooters without telling their customers that they are illegal to use on public roads. Officers have so far seized a total of 3,637 privately owned e-scooters in 2021.

Commander Kyle Gordon, in charge of roads policing, said: “We know that some people may be unfamiliar with the rules around e-scooters and this is something we are working hard with partners to address.

“It is really unhelpful that retailers, fully aware of the risks they are creating for the public, continue to profit from selling machines illegal for use on public roads without sufficient explanation and guidance...

“Private devices have, on occasion, proven to be highly dangerous; and we have been called to help many people who have been involved in collisions and ended up seriously hurting themselves or others.

Despite being only finished between 2009 and 2011, the flats at Solomon’s Passage have faced severe damp, mould and safety problems since their completion.

The timber cladding on the outside of the building was declared to be dangerous, and it emerged that the building lacked sufficient fire proofing. A 24-hour fire warden was employed as a result.

In 2018, just seven years after completion, the building’s previous owner sold the blocks and moved residents out of the flats into other housing, leaving the building mainly empty.

It has been left covered in protective hoarding, while a small number of the flats are temporarily rented out to people.

Proposals by ECD Architects that would have retained and reconfigured two of the development’s blocks were approved by Southwark Council in 2018.

But after Wandle Housing Association sold the site to Henley Homes last year, the new owner have created their own plans.

Victoria Crosby, from Southwark Council’s planning team, said to another publication: “The buildings suffer from problems of water ingress, damage to the timber frames, leaking roofs, damp, poor wiring and fire safety measures and concerns with the timber cladding.

“There are some temporary occupiers to help protect the site from vandalism but the majority of homes are unoccupied because the construction faults and issues mean that the previous occupiers have been moved out.”

Councillors voted unanimously to approve the demolition and rebuild of the flats during a meeting on November 30.

A spokesperson for Southwark Council said: “The highly unusual reasons for proposing the demolition of these buildings, which are only approximately 10 years old, relate to the poor build quality and the lack of action to remedy defects since the problems were discovered.

“As well as replacing the 85 poor quality, near-uninhabitable homes with new units, the six additional units proposed would make a small contribution towards the borough’s housing needs.”

Twenty two of the 91 new flats will be available at social rent, ten at affordable rents, while the remainder of the apartments will be at market rates.

The number of parking spaces available on site will be reduced from the current 62 to 40, with seven of the spaces reserved for people with mobility difficulties.

In the meeting's one moment of mild constitutional controversy, Cllr Damian O'Brien even pushed for the application to be pushed back to make time for more consultation - leading to a moment of confusion with committee chair Cllr Martin Seaton. Cllr O'Brien

Museum director Katherine McAlpine, who joined part-way through the design process, told the committee she was sorry that, before her time, "conversation wasn't happening" with locals "for whatever reason."

She admitted that consultation had been difficult amid Covid-19 restrictions, but pointed out that they had carried out in-person consultation between lockdowns.

And Ms McAlpine defended the plans, saying: "We are trying to achieve many, many things in a building that was built to house steam engines to pump water out of it… it wasn’t built thinking about what the needs of a museum would be 200 years in the future. We’ve thought long and hard about what the most appropriate needs are for the site."

Cllr Kath Whittam, who was speaking on behalf of her fellow Rotherhithe ward councillors - and was not a committee member - said she, Cllr Stephanie Cryan and Cllr Bill Williams were in favour of the application.

She said: "I’ve lived in Rotherhithe for over 30 years. When I first moved in, the Brunel museum was open on one Sunday afternoon per month only.

Since then it has grown and become more prominent, so that in normal circumstances it will be open almost every day...

"As ward councillors, we support this application because it will take the museum to the next stage."

Despite their concerns over the consultation, all of the committee members apart from Cllr O'Brien voted in favour of the scheme.

Brunel museum gets extension despite outcry over tree loss

The Brunel Museum was given the green light for a new building on Monday night (December 6), despite an outcry from Rotherhithe residents about the loss of two mature cherry trees and open space.

The museum wants to build a new visitor centre with toilets and a snack concession - which would mean the museum’s Pumping Engine House building would have more space for exhibitions.

But it also means that two mature cherry trees would have to be felled.

These would be replaced by two pear trees - which, as fruit trees, would also blossom, and seven cherry trees. The replacement cherry trees would be paid for with about £4,000 from the museum as part of its planning agreement, and would probably be planted on the Adams Gardens Estate and nearby Rupack Street.

Other plans include works to the inside and outside of the Pumping Engine House and an “audiovisual experience” in the tunnel shaft.

Local objectors were represented

by Alison Clayburn, who lives close to the museum. As well as the loss of the cherry trees, Ms Clayburn said that she and her neighbours objected to the

design of the proposed new building, which she said does not fit with the historic character of the Rotherhithe conservation area. She questioned why the museum needed the new building, given that it is now only open to the general public at the weekends.

raised concerns about the seeminglyoverwhelming objection to the new building from locals. Cllr David Noakes said it was "sad" that so many people were against the scheme. Pointing out that there had been 73 objections, and only three comments in favour, he said: "It seems like something has gone

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A couple have been found guilty of the “most despicable” crime of physically abusing their baby girl, who died in 2019 after suffering more than 60 broken bones.

Benjamin O’Shea, 26, of Dominion Drive in Rotherhithe and Naomi Johnson, 23, of Octavia Street in Battersea, were convicted of causing or allowing a child to suffer serious physical harm at Inner London Crown Court last Tuesday (November 30) after a four-week trial. They were also found guilty of cruelty to a person under 16 in relation to a separate child.

They will be sentenced on December 17.

O’Shea and Johnson’s eight-weekold baby Amina stopped breathing on April 26, 2019. O’Shea called 999 and paramedics soon arrived to try to save his daughter’s life, but she died at the scene.

There were no observable injuries and so the cause of her death was first thought to be Sudden Unexplained Death in Infants.

But a shocking post-mortem x-ray revealed more than 60 broken bones in Amina’s body, including 41 identified fractures to her ribs, front and back, as well as 24 limb bone fractures.

Doctors saw that the broken bones were likely to have been caused by continued physical abuse. Some of the fractures had begun to heal, suggesting a long pattern of cruelty.

A police investigation was launched on May 3 2019 and O’Shea and Johnson were arrested and questioned. They claimed that Amina had died because of an earlier visit to the GP and that her broken bones were caused by the paramedics.

Police looked back through their text and call history as part of the investigation.

Detectives found Johnson made a call to NHS 111 in April 2019, the month when Amina died, where she reported that her baby had been coughing blood. When the doctor phoned back and told O’Shea to take Amina to hospital, O’Shea did not tell Johnson and the baby was not taken to the hospital.

In later police interviews, the pair both denied injuring the child.

In relation to the second child, who was known to the couple, detectives found texts between them where they both admit to slapping the child and treating them badly. Johnson said she had slapped the child three times and then only given them water until dinner. O’Shea told Johnson in a text of his difficulty at keeping calm after the child knocked over a drink in a fast food restaurant.

Detective Inspector Melanie Pressley, who led the investigation said: “This is a truly heart-breaking case that has touched all of us who have worked on bringing Johnson and O’Shea before the court for their monstrous crimes. The cruelty and callousness with which the pair discussed the treatment of the other child in this case is shocking. Children depend on adults and the children in this case were sorely betrayed by Johnson and O’Shea in the most tragic of ways.

“In eight weeks of life Amina suffered an unimaginable number of injuries. The trauma she endured in her short life is impossible to comprehend, her injuries are a catalogue of the most despicable abuse. Equally incomprehensible is how an adult can inflict such cruelty on defenceless, innocent children.

Throughout our investigation we have been unable to establish how the baby died and Johnson and O’Shea have been steadfast in their refusal to answer our questions. They have sought to protect themselves in a way they clearly did not for the two children in this case.”

Detective Constable Caroline Baker, part of the investigation team, said: “It is difficult to speak of justice in a case like this, however I hope that today’s verdict is a clear message that these children mattered and the abuse they suffered will be punished.”

London Assembly member Caroline Russell asked the mayor at a recent meeting what was being done to fix the problem.

Khan told the Green Party member that TfL had worked with police to come up with a concept design. The transport agency will fund all of the design work and half of the build, depending on what comes out of the funding agreement on Saturday (December 11).

TfL has a £1.7b hole in its budget because of the pandemic, when it lost most of its fare income. Since then

London’s transport has relied on shortterm government funding agreements, but Khan and TfL are pushing for a more secure arrangement.

As for Tower Bridge, part of the issue appears to be that while TfL operates the road across the bridge, the owner of the actual structure is the Bridge House Estate, part of the City of London Corporation.

Khan told Russell: “Build is therefore uncertain until funding has been agreed with the [Department for Transport] and with the bridge owner for the other 50 per cent of costs.”

A professor of osteoarticular pathology found that the rib fractures had been sustained on at least two occasions and the limb bone fractures on at least seven occasions. He also found that the pattern of broken bones meant they could not have been caused accidentally.

a small, healed subdural haemorrhage damage to a vein between the skull and the brain.

This was also supported by an investigation of her eyes that found evidence within the retina, extraocular muscles and orbital fat showing previous bleeding - but no evidence of recent retinal bleeding.

£150,000 Mayoral grant Tower Bridge ‘likely to remain flood risk’ for Peckham businesses

The money was awarded from the Greater London Authority’s High Street Challenge for All fund, and totals £150,000 to support businesses and traders.

The funds are designed to help offset the damage done by lockdown to local high streets, as well as by the impact of online shopping.

Deputy Mayor Jules Pipe joined local businesses and the Leader of Southwark Council, Kieron Williams, to celebrate the news at specialist drama school Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, in the heart of Peckham.

Cllr Jason Ochere, Cabinet Member for jobs business and town centres, said: “Local businesses add personality and a unique character to each distinct and individual corner of the borough.

“They serve the needs of the communities who live alongside them, but they also help to draw people from further afield.

“We are fortunate to have many destination highstreets and town centres in Southwark, but today we are delighted to continue to expand our support of small businesses on Rye Lane, with this High Street Challenge for All funding.”

contracted to start putting the funding to use by providing business support and bringing traders together.

Southwark Council and Mountview are also aiming to deliver Deft Space, a night time strategy which will improve women’s safety at night in the area.

The financial aid is part of the Mayor of London’s investment of £2m to support high street recovery across London.

The Mayor also announced a new £300k phase of his Back to Business Fund, launching later this month, in collaboration with the London boroughs of Southwark, Croydon, and Hammersmith & Fulham.

The Executive Director at Mountview, Sarah Preece, said: “With support from the Mayor of London, Peckham’s business community will be able to come together to create a new enterprise hub, develop a night time strategy, tackle the climate emergency and work to improve safety at night, making Rye Lane a thriving, safe and sustainable destination at all times of the day and night.”

Tower Bridge will remain a flooding risk until Transport for London (TfL) reaches a longterm funding agreement with the government, Sadiq Khan has said.

We reported in September this year how the bridge appeared to flood in a period of heavy rain, with cars driving through several inches of water.

London mayor Khan told the capital’s assembly members in 2018 that the bridge was now more likely to flood because the anti-terrorism barriers put up in the wake of recent terrorist attacks on London Bridge and Westminster Bridge were blocking the gullies that allow rainwater to drain away.

He said at the time: “Following the terrorist attacks on Westminster and London Bridge in 2017, it was necessary for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to install permanent barriers along various bridges in central London, including Tower Bridge.

“Unfortunately, a number of the barriers on Tower Bridge have blocked the gullies and led to a build-up of standing water. The MPS has been working with Transport for London to address this issue and, on 20 November 2018, barriers were removed to clear the drainage system of any blockages and clean the surrounding area. Barriers were then put back in place, but with alterations to ensure more water can flow into the gullies in the future.”

Single mum Lucinda Andrews’ son Leo was born in March this year with a problem affecting his TBCD gene - a condition that only sixteen people in the world are thought to have.

The condition is very complicated and affects the development of Leo’s brain, central nervous system and muscles. Eight months after birth, he is still learning to support his own head. It is unclear what Leo’s life expectancy is.

The condition is so rare that even the specialists at St Thomas’ were left baffled - and Lucinda said that she was told “to enjoy the time she had left with Leo”. There is no treatment available on the NHS. “But as a mother, I couldn’t accept this,” said Lucinda, from Chatham in Kent. “I took it upon myself to become an expert in his condition. I scoured the earth to look for someone who could be helpful for him.”

company in the US who said they could try adapting different medicines to see if they would work on stabilising Leo and even possibly fixing the genetic problem. This approach has reportedly worked on other genetic conditions.

But this treatment would come at an extraordinary cost - £220,000.

Lucinda has raised just over £13,000 but says fundraising efforts have stalled recently. She is also working to register a charity, which would allow her to apply for grants from larger organisations.

Leo spent three and a half months in St Thomas’ after “taking a bit of a wobble” when he was two weeks old.

“We were brought into a side room in the hospital and given the option to remove him from the supportive machines that he was on. It was put to me that if he had deteriorated this month in two weeks, that he didn’t have much time. They told me that I could take him to a children’s hospice rather than take him home.”

Lucinda decided to take Leo home instead, where he is doing much better, she said. Although he takes in liquids through a tube, he is able to eat without one, which was a surprise to his specialists.

But taking care of Leo has still taken over Lucinda’s whole life, she said.

“It’s extremely difficult doing day-today things - we have to plan everything around Leo’s sleeping because he stops breathing when he goes into a deep sleep.

“I have to take equipment with me when we go out. He’s always hooked up to machines to check his heart rate.”

Lucinda’s respite comes at night, when dedicated carers come to watch over Leo and give her a chance to sleep.

She said she “couldn’t fault” the staff at St Thomas’, despite the fact that they cannot cure Leo’s condition.

“The whole time after he was admitted, the day-to-day care they gave - you can see they just loved him.

“They were also a great help with the biotech company, our neurologist here really got the ball rolling. There was a whole other side of things that I wouldn’t have been able to get done without them.

“The condition is just so rare. Even people that specialise in ultra-rare disorders don’t know about it. It’s not anything against them at all - just as his mum I couldn’t accept that.”

Mohammed Khan, 11, had previously been seen going to play football in the area near his home.

Police said last Thursday afternoon (December 2) that he had been found in Bristol, more than 100 miles from his new home, and was “safe and well”.

Although close to Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, Deptford is part of the borough of Lewisham. Southwark councillor Alice Macdonald told the News last week that there are around 200 Afghan refugees in our borough at the moment. Roughly half are children.

cousins get life for murder

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Two cousins who murdered an 18-year-old in Dulwich have been sentenced to life in jail for the crime.

Kieran Robinson, 22, from Streatham, and Sean Robinson, 27, from Penge, were sentenced at the Old Bailey for the murder of Donnell Rhule, who died after suffering multiple stab wounds, one of which was to the heart, on the Kingswood Estate in 2020.

The men have been sentenced to life imprisonment, to serve a minimum of 23 years each.

Detective Sergeant Iain Law, who worked on the investigation, said: “Today is not a day to celebrate but I do hope this verdict provides some comfort to Donnell’s family as they continue to come to terms with their loss.

“Both defendants colluded together to carry out the attack in broad daylight and in front of horrified members of the public. I would like to praise those witnesses for the bravery they have

shown and the support they have given our investigation.”

Police were called to the estate at around 6.30pm on July 8 2020 after Donnell was found injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene a short while later.

Detectives from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command launched a murder investigation, speaking to witnesses in the area.

The investigation revealed that Donnell had been with a group of friends when he was confronted by Kieran Robinson, who was erratically riding a moped around the estate. Kieran was joined by his cousin Sean, who was travelling as a passenger in a car being driven by another man.

Witnesses reported hearing Sean encourage Kieran to attack Donnell, leading to him stabbing Donnell three times with a Rambo-style knife. One of the strikes went through Donnell’s heart.

Donnell and a friend ran from the area down an alleyway behind a row of shops.

Both defendants gave chase on the moped.

A witness reported seeing Sean carrying a large knife. Both men then rode out of the estate on the moped.

Having been seriously injured, Donnell collapsed on the grass. Members of the public provided first aid until the emergency services arrived.

The attackers were caught on CCTV meeting with the driver of the car. They left in different directions.

After being arrested, they were interviewed. Kieran refused to comment during the interview, although later tried to claim that he was acting in self-defence after Donnell allegedly threatened him with a knife. No evidence suggests this to be the case.

Sean claimed he had gone to the estate to buy cannabis and that he had no involvement in the attack.

Report sexual assault online

You can now report sexual assaults on London public transport online and anonymously, after British Transport Police joined a trial scheme, writes Kit Heren...

Officers said that they were trying to get more people to report these crimes to the police. Reporting an offence online gives victims the choice of staying anonymous.

If the six-week pilot is successful, it will become permanent and will be available for other UK police forces. Search for rape and sexual assault reporting service on the British Transport Police website.

London aims to end new HIV infections

London‘s borough councils have promised to end new HIV infections in the capital by 2030 writes Kit Heren...

London has a higher HIV infection rate than any other part of the UK. Around 37,000 people live with the infection in the capital.

Boroughs created the London HIV Prevention Programme in 2014 and have slashed new HIV diagnosis rates by 41 per cent in seven years.

The councils went further to mark World Aids Day this month by committing to end new infections altogether by the end of the decade.

‘why were we left without water for three whole days?

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A mother of a young son has hit out at one of London’s biggest housing associations after her Borough estate went without running water for three days this week - with some residents not even offered bottled water.

People living in the Douglas Buildings in Marshalsea Road lost access to running water on Monday (November 29) and only had it turned back on on Thursday afternoon, after a pipe sprang a leak.

Loyla Akhtar said Peabody, which owns the 100-flat estate, were slow to react to the problem despite several complaints soon after the water went off.

“I spoke to them, I said we need water because it’s an emergency,” she said. “I called them again [on Thursday] morning, I said ‘my son needs to go to school, and we can’t even flush the toilet.’”

She said she logged the issue with the repair team, but later contacted them again and found that there was no record of this.

“They should be contacting us - but no one has said anything.”

Ms Akhtar added that she was “disgusted” that she had to buy water for herself and her son Deen, rather than being offered some by Peabody.

The housing association said they had offered people bottled water and would “look into” why some residents did not get this.

The heating has stayed on in the flats for now, but Ms Akhtar said over Christmas last year the heating failed, meaning she and her son had to go stay with relatives because it was too cold.

A spokesperson for Peabody said: “We are sorry that people on the estate have not had water this week and we know it’s been a difficult situation for them. Our teams have been on the estate since the issue was first reported to us on Tuesday.

“We were checking on vulnerable residents and offering support throughout Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as ensuring that people had bottled water while we identified and fixed the issue.

We will look into why some people appear not to have received the bottled water we arranged.

“The disruption to the water supply was resolved on Thursday when access to running water was restored. It was caused by a leak in the pipes and involved a complex repair replacing a section of pipework which meant the works took longer than expected. We will monitor the situation over the weekend to ensure that residents continue to have water.”

Ambulance veteran turns on hq’s Christmas lights

A 50-year veteran of the London Ambulance Service (LAS) was "chuffed and over the moon" to switch on the Christmas lights at the Waterloo headquarters this year.

John Boyaram, 68, joined the service in 1971 as a teenager, and has worked in patient transport services, taking people to and from appointments, and in the 999 control room.

John also met his wife Carol at the LAS headquarters and they have two children and four grandchildren.

John said: “I am really chuffed and over the moon to be invited to switch on the lights this year, and recognised again for my long service. I feel incredibly valued by the service and I am honoured to stand alongside my colleagues today for this moment. This is something I will treasure for the rest of my life.

“In the fifty years I have been at the service I have seen lots of changes in the organisation, but what hasn’t changed

is that our staff and volunteers are our greatest asset.

"It is wonderful to see the impressive clinical expertise which continues to grow across the service and it is also brilliant to see all the clinical development opportunities, as well as the support services, available to our staff and volunteers.”

Chief executive Daniel Elkeles joined John and Carol for a mince pie after the ceremony.

He said: “It is humbling and inspiring to spend time with John – Londoners are lucky to have him looking after them and we are lucky to have him in our team.

“I am deeply grateful for his passion and commitment to his patients and to his colleagues.

“Thank you to all our staff and volunteers this Christmas – I hope as many of you as possible can enjoy our tree – a little bit of joy after all the turbulent times we have been through.”

Southwark carers get £100 vouchers some 700 people who work in Southwark care homes got a £100 voucher from the council as a thank you for their work during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, the council's cabinet member for health, visited care homes across the borough on Friday (December 3) to deliver the vouchers and thank care home workers.

She said: “These unprecedented past two years have been incredibly hard on so many people, but I especially want to thank everyone who looks after others.

Their selfless energy to support other people is inspirational and all of us who have relatives in care are truly grateful for

all they do for our loved ones.”

The vouchers can be used in various different shops, including supermarkets. It wasn't just carers were given the vouchers -all staff in care homes got them, including cleaners, cooks and other support workers.

One of the care home managers, whose staff will receive the vouchers, said: “We are delighted to hear about this scheme. It makes a big difference for our care home staff when they get recognition for the amazing work they do. Thank you so much Southwark for thinking of them.”

Care homes have been hugely affected by the pandemic, with tens of thousands of residents of homes across the country dying after being infected with Covid-19.

Bacon’s plan refugee walk Students and staff from a Rotherhithe school are walking around London later this month to raise money for refugees.

Starting at Southwark Cathedral, the group from Bacon's College will make a series of stops at various locations of significance to the plight of refugees and migrants in London - and will be accompanied by former refugees as they go.

These will include a statue outside Liverpool Street station celebrating the Kindertransport, when thousands of children were smuggled over from

A surgeon at Guy's Hospital has performed the first operation to remove a cancerous prostate with a new surgical robot.

Professor Prokar Dasgupta carried out the surgery on former GP Nasser Jadalizadeh, 78, from Surrey, who had prostate cancer.

Nasser said: “Professor Dasgupta spoke to me in depth so I really had no question about it. I was very excited and

Students at Bacon’s College will also be creating Christmas gift parcels and hand made cards for refugees over the festive period.

During this kind of operation, surgeons control the robot while sitting at an open console in the same

room that shows them what's going on in three dimensions and in high definition. A small camera on the end of one arm gives them a view inside the patient.

Guy's already has other surgery robots but this robot, called Versius, is already helping surgeons to perform prostate and kidney removal, pyeloplasty reconstruction (to remove a blockage in one of the ureters) and adrenal surgery.

It will be used for colorectal and general surgeries in the future. St Thomas' hospital - part of the same NHS trust as Guy's will get a second Versius robot.

Elephant Park project artist announced An award winning artist has been named to provide a landmark public artwork for Elephant Park, which will aim to imagine what the space ‘could be’.

Ryan Gander OBE has worked with sculpture, writing, architecture, painting, and performance, and has become known for his “no style style,” in which he doesn’t allow himself to be constricted by any existing ideas about art.

Over this autumn, Ryan worked with the South London Gallery on a series of workshops with local school children to bring their creativity to the project. The final work will have several elements in different locations across the park, forming a trail.

Ryan said: “Elephant & Castle has always been a really special part of London, through all its historic iterations. When

we think about place we often think about 'as it is' or 'as it was', but seldom do we imagine para-possible futures; what a place 'could be’.

“This form of ‘Imagineering' takes great ingenuity and inventiveness, and so it seemed fitting to me that working with those with the most active imaginations and those who know the place the best - namely the young people who live in the area - would be the most catalytic approach.”

The commission is supported by Lendlease and Southwark Council, who are jointly delivering the £2.5bn regeneration of Elephant Park. Around half the site is devoted to public and green space, including a two-acre park, public squares and pocket gardens, the new Walworth Library and Southwark Heritage Centre and future community

spaces still under construction.

A wheelchair user with a long-term physical disability, Ryan once filled the Whitechapel Library with obstacles, dead ends, and illusions meant to confound visitors. The installation, called “Is This Guilt in You Too?” symbolised the difficulties faced by disabled people in public spaces.

He has also produced art works for Central Park in the USA, Mexico City Zoo, and The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King.

family’s annual tribute to anthony nolan charity A Walworth family hope they will bring “a bit of joy” to families this Christmas with their festive light show to celebrate the charity that saved their son’s life.

Dad Gunaltay Mustafa started putting up Christmas lights when his son Alex was diagnosed with Leukaemia at age four, as a way of cheering him up after his chemotherapy.

After he relapsed at the age of eleven, Alex was given a 4 per cent chance of survival. His only hope was a bone marrow transplant something notoriously difficult to find for ethnic minorities.

However, charity Anthony Nolan found Alex a donor, saving his life.

The Mustafa family still put on the light show every year, now to celebrate the incredible work by Anthony Nolan, and to raise money for them via Just Giving.

Writing on this year’s fundraising page, Alex’s sister Jade wrote: “Alex still has life long side effects that he

will have to deal with for the rest of his life, but he’s here and with us and that’s all that matters. My Dad vowed after the transplant that he would use the lights as a way of raising money for Anthony Nolan charity each year, and all he hopes is that they bring a bit of joy to people who might be going through a hard time and bring a bit of a smile.

“If you have some spare pennies, no matter how big or small, they would be greatly appreciated.

“Without this Charity my brother wouldn’t be with us and would have missed out on the last 13 years of memories that we’ve had as a family.”

The fundraiser has currently raised £859 - achieving 171 per cent of their £500 target.

The Alleyn's Parents' Association

Alleyn’s grant help for technology charity A grassroots Southwark charity that provides technology to those who need it is receiving one and a half thousand pounds from a parents’ association to help in their cause.

Starting in response to the first COVID lockdown in March 2020, Community TechAid aims to bridge the digital divide by recycling computers, tablets and mobile phones and distributing them throughout the community.

It has grown from a volunteer run organisation to now employing four members of staff, and has enabled over 850 members of the community to get online.

Dulwich-based Alleyn’s School, Alleyn’s Parents’ Association chose Community Tech Aid as a beneficiary of their recent school raffle in recognition of the charity’s transformative work since the beginning of the pandemic.

Thanking the association for their donation, founder of Community Tech Aid Linda Heiden said: “The school’s donation has already been earmarked to help us deliver a further 20 laptops by providing new batteries.

“The generosity and support of community facing organisations such as the Alleyn’s Parents’ Association is key to our charity’s growth, and enables us to deepen and widen our reach within the

local community.”

Community Tech Aid began when it’s founder realised how integral technology was to sustaining a professional work life in the 21st Century - something compounded further by the move to working from home during lockdown.

Cat Smith, the charity’s Chief Operating Officer, said: “The lockdown legacy means much of daily life has moved online, widening the digital divide and deepening inequalities.

“We aim to meet this ongoing need for digital access in the community, whether that be for schooling, job seeking, adult education, or health and wellbeing resources.”

Peckham hairdresser launches wellbeing centre

A Peckham hairdresser who improves her customers’ lives as well as their hair has launched a new wellbeing and community hub in the heart of Southwark.

Hairdresser Oz Izzet has named the hub The Sisters of Oz - a development of her business’ name, The Scissors of Oz. The aim of the hub is to create a space that promotes wellbeing, self-love and self-care, as well as to bring community businesses together.

The launch was celebrated by an official party last weekend, and saw guests receive a goody bag and surrounded by decorations from Canopy Plants and Loony Blunts.

Several local businesses will come together in the new community space.

These include Oz taking care of hair, Rachael Rose Beauty covering skin treatments and other beauty products, Danielle Fitzgerald from Cake Rebellion and Coffee Rebellion serving up coffee and cake and Hermione Shaw - a selftaught Nail Artist, Fine Artist and Owner of Fearsome Talons, creating original, tailor made designs for clients.

“It’s scary launching your own business,” said Oz, “but with a collective this strong everything and anything is possible.

“We can't thank the community enough for coming along to support us and help celebrate with us.”

Inclusive yoga teacher, Hebe Richardson, will also be launching yoga sessions including mindful flow yoga in the space.

Comment Beautiful branches for festive season

N

ovember remained mild - until the end of the month when temperatures dropped bringing clear blue skies and sun for a few days, then the first of the winter storms arrived. Generally, December’s weather is changeable usually overcast and showery with cold spells. The winter solstice and the shortest day falls on 21st December.

As Christmas approaches there is still time to find gifts for the gardener; secateurs make a useful present; good quality ones are expensive and you can pay up to £80 depending on the brand and type.

Cheap secateurs cost as little as £16 but don’t generally last long, quickly becoming blunt, and often breaking with prolonged use. The Felco No. 2 secateurs cost £46 and come with a life-time guarantee. Gardeners never have enough pairs of work gloves; some are light weight and there are heavier duty gloves for the prickly pruning jobs. Prices start at £5.50.

A look around the winter garden shows roses continuing to bloom - as if it was July. But the seasonal evergreens – Skimmia, Cotoneaster and Myrtle are laden with berries. Christmas Box and Mahonia are in flower – the Witch Hazel is getting ready to bloom.

For the festive season branches of evergreens such as Myrtle, Ivy,

Holly or Rosemary can be cut for indoor display; place stems in vases with water. Or fix the stems over doors, or weave around stair banisters. They will dry out fairly quickly and any berries will drop (not to be eaten and kept away from children and pets). It is best to wait until Christmas Eve to decorate the house with fresh evergreens.

If you choose a larger sized Christmas tree in a pot - water from time to time (avoid spilling water on wires, plugs and lights) this will delay needle drop. But they are not live plants anymore because most roots are removed to get them into containers. However, the small trees (usually under two feet) often sold in Supermarkets are likely to live as they usually container grown. Treat like houseplants whilst indoors, water occasionally and keep in cool conditions. Once Christmas is over move to the garden, balcony or window box (sink the pot into the earth); water if the compost dries out; and repot in spring. Treat like any other container plant (water well in summer and feed) re-pot as needed – these little fir trees will be happy for a few years before they need to be planted in the ground.

Keep the cut Christmas tree (in the wood block) as cool as possible and away from any direct heat source to delay drying and needle drop.

Insulate Southwark?

H

ow does the campaign to ‘Insulate Britain’ translate to our borough? British homes are the worst insulated in western Europe; we spend a much larger share of our income on keeping warm than people in comparable countries. Private tenants, in particular, often have to pay inflated energy bills while landlords fail to install basic energy-saving measures.

I’ve seen so many London flats and houses where single-glazed windows rattle in their frames.

Rooms are below the recommended temperature, but the choice is ‘heat or eat’. Condensation forms on the coldest walls, leading to mould and mildew. It’s a miserable way to live – and it’s unhealthy. Fuel Poverty Action highlights government statistics that record thousands of avoidable deaths each year due to cold homes. The Building Research Establishment (BRE) has shown that poorly insulated homes in England cost the NHS £857 million a year.

What can we do about it? The

first steps are straightforward.

Double or triple the insulation in the attic. Put a jacket on the hot-water tank and thermostatic controls on radiators. Replace failing windows with well-fitted double glazing. BRE estimates that steps like these pay for themselves in just seven years.

A properly insulated home feels snug while energy use drops – and even if prices go up, heating no longer blows the household budget, or the carbon budget.

To be really efficient, we need to plan improvements across whole streets – and across the whole borough. The Dutch company EnergieSprong has pioneered a clever system of paying for ‘deep retrofit’ through the savings made on energy and maintenance bills. They recently piloted their first UK scheme in Nottingham.

Meanwhile, in Brighton, the Greenled council has put in place a plan to retrofit tens of thousands of council homes, coordinated with the existing repairs and maintenance budget, and creating hundreds of new, skilled jobs. A change in taxation would

More people means yet more rubbish

T

he state of the streets really isn’t the sexiest subject. Most people don’t really want to think about bins and litter unless they have to. And yet it’s massively important.

Just walking around Bermondsey and Rotherhithe, you can see that there is a problem with the amount of rubbish flowing freely along our pavements. On street corners on our estates you can see piles of furniture just left on empty spaces. What does this say about the way we view our home?

Yes, funding for street cleaning has been cut massively. The council blames the government’s austerity measures since 2010, when Labour also regained control of Southwark. But people also have to take responsibility for their own streets - and help keep them clean by not littering or fly-tipping in the first place.

We should be grateful to street-cleaning volunteers the Litterati, but mostly to the unsung heroes the 169 street cleaners still on the Southwark payroll who are doing their best in an uphill battle.

Harriet’s four decades of engagement

H

arriet Harman’s decision to stand down at the next election after nearly forty years heralds an end to the political career of one of the most iconic female figures in UK politics.

It’s no surprise that after she made the announcement on Twitter, testimonies flooded in about how she had inspired both men and women to join government.

When she arrived in the House of Commons in 1982 while seven months pregnant, it was 97 per cent male. It was clear from the start that Harman had no interest in maintaining the status quo.

Harman saw the Labour Party adopt the national minimum wage, as well as increase their number of female MPs to 46 per cent.

This increase in representation must be understood not just in terms of what some might call “boxticking” - having more women in Parliament pushed key issues such as maternity pay and time offered, which have doubled during her tenure. The female perspective showed then PM Gordon Brown the importance of childcare for getting mothers in work, which resulted in improved figures for the numbers of single parents getting into the workplace.

Of course, not every endeavour has ended in success. But Harman has never let critics get her down - and has stayed true to her core principles over four decades of political engagement.

She has stated that she will leave politics “with her feminism intact” but also her enthusiasm for politics ‘undimmed’. In an age of widespread political disengagement and cynicism, such dedication to politics and hence matters that effect us all is a quality we should cherish.

Queen of Hearts in Greenwich After a break last year the panto crowd were itching to get back to the good old pre-Covid days when we could laugh and boo and hiss to our heart’s content, writes Michael Holland.

This year the regular Greenwich Theatre panto writer, Andrew Pollard, has gone a little bit off-piste and not gone for one of the main traditional panto stories, but his Queen of Hearts has all the ingredients for a proper Christmas show.

With Covid still affecting theatre rehearsals, this was a stripped-down production in regards to cast, but this intrepid troupe certainly made up for that with a blistering array of songs, dance, a dame and a villain. And not forgetting ‘Uncle’ Steve Markwick and his merry band of top-notch musicians playing everything from classical to pop to rock.

The story was about a money-making secret recipe that the King of Clubs (Anthony Spargo) wanted so he could fund a life of debauchery, but which he had to steal from the Queen of Hearts without getting caught by any Jacks, princes or princesses.

It was all very silly with lots of bad dad jokes that raised as many ironic groans as laughs, which is exactly what we’ve been deprived of for two years. In fact, my favourite joke was told by The Knave of Hearts (Gibsa Bah): ‘This is not my real ladder, this is my stepladder.’

Divorced, beheaded and live in the West End When six Queens make an entrance you know it is going to be good if the Queens are all ex-wives with something to say. They did not disappoint; when they came on to the stage and sung about being Divorced, Beheaded, Died, Divorced, Beheaded, Survived, we knew this was the Royal Six and that we were in for a good time, writes Michael Holland.

giving us more costume changes than a Madonna concert, and Mr Spargo once again being the Bestest Baddie in town, the Queen of Hearts is a winner. And as much as it is very much the Spargo and Pollard show, these two veterans are very giving to the young performers who every year are given huge opportunities to shine while they get to

work alongside the best at Greenwich.

Most of the singing and dancing was handed over to Emma Jay Thomas (Prince of Spades) and Myla Carmen (Princess of Diamonds), and they, along with the Knave of Hearts, did a sterling job of kicking off theatre-goers’ panto season with a smile and a bang.

Just like Dorothy, Efe befriends an amazing trio on her journey, each dealing with their own insecurities in the world. Manne-Quin, works through his disinterest in academic merits in favour of expressing artistic

flair for fashion; Mane Man a young black man exposes the pressure on young black men facing danger on the streets who need the courage to explore healthy fear that encourages valuing one’s life, and there’s Cyri a cyborg, isolated from human emotions and by communicating factually raises questions of identity alongside the relentless use of technology that is threatening community relations.

Efe’s journey delivers messages in such an affectionate and fun way that this is a fabulous show. A production full of community warmth, exceptional creativity and a pure joy to watch...Book now!

The Wonderful at Theatre Peckham is a joy

Taking a familiar Christmas favourite The Wonderful Wizard of Oz as a starting point, the creative team have delivered a modern production that explores current issues including diversity, integrating Afro-futurism, technology, magic and fantasy, amongst others.

Ashleigh-Mae Schoburgh-Crooks, plays Efe, the modern-day Dorothy, a young black girl who, with her faithful dog TikTok, are swept away from Peckham Road to the land of Ozander. Efe’s journey proves an ideal theme for a typical young person to explore their place in this often-scary world, but revealing that none are typical, the play’s

Catherine, Anne, Jane, Anna, Katherine and yet another Catherine introduced themselves in an upbeat, rock number accompanied by Lauren, Alice, Amy and Rachel in the band. They explained that they would be telling their stories and amending the history we were taught in school to herstories. The Queens would be giving us a fresh perspective without any male agenda behind it. And I must say it was refreshing to hear, and much more believable.

The songs by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss are fantastic and cover just about every pop genre, treating us to Funk, R&B, Soul, Euro-Pop, Techno and a nice bit of Lily Allen dropped in for good measure. The lyrics are hilarious in places, and equally poignant in others.

The wives of Henry VIII did not lead happy lives but Marlow and Moss have given each of them a voice, a 21st century update to make them the main focus of those turbulent years and not just one of six - a mere backdrop to Henry’s strutting. They now do the strutting as they hip-thrust their stuff around the stage and tell us what really went down.

Catherine of Aragon was running the country as Regent when Aitch was away fighting in France; Anne Boleyn translated when French Emperors came calling; Katherine Howard was sexually assaulted by Palace staff while still a teen, which gave Henry cause to have her head chopped off, and Catherine Parr was the first woman in England to publish a book under her own name.

Legends all.

And it is that historical perspective that gives these six confident woman the power to provide audiences with a raunchy show of the highest order. They are not just Henry’s wives, they are the SIX. Each one combines a tremendous voice with moves to match in a hi-energy, non-stop 80 minute performance that ticks every box on the Entertainment Checklist.

But perhaps the greatest story to be told here is that Marlow and Moss wrote SIX in three days for a student show at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The celebrated Second World War codebreaker, broadcaster, gallerist and literary translator, who spent the last 40 years of her life in Dulwich, fought off stiff competition in a year of outstanding nominees, all of whom deserve their own recognition.

Richard Aldwinckle, one of Helene’s children, welcomed the news that his mother had won this year’s competition.

“Helene’s family is very pleased and proud that her secret war service is being recognised in this way,” he said.

“She would have been deeply honoured and perhaps a little bit surprised! We are very grateful to the many readers of Southwark News and to those from further afield who wrote in to vote for her.”

Helene was awarded the Legion D’Honneur by the French government late in her life, and also got a letter from the UK’s then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown in 2009. But like many women, she was not showered in praise in her lifetime, despite her vital contribution to the war effort.

Richard said the blue plaque, which should go up at her former home on Farquhar Road in Dulwich, would help right that wrong.

“It is important to recognise the

contribution of those able women, like my mother, who made a significant difference to the outcome of the second world war but who have received little recognition. This helps to put that right.”

Unsurprisingly, people who voted for Helene often praised her codebreaking work, but those who knew her personally also mentioned her “wonderful” and self-effacing nature.

Helene got the most votes in 2021 but all of the other nominees were also richly deserving and, in another year, any might have been the winner.

James Butterworth was a pioneering social worker in Walworth, who founded and ran Clubland, a youth club attached to his Methodist church, for 50 years - starting at the age of just 25.

Born into penury himself, he came to London after serving in the First World War and transformed the lives of countless young people. One voter said: “Quite simply Clubland changed my life.”

Len Deighton was an author, journalist, cookery book writer, and historian, who is thought to have written the first novel typed on a word processor from his Merrick Square home in Borough.

Along with Graham Greene, Ian Fleming and John Le Carré, Mr Deighton, 92, is often ranked among the foremost British authors of spy fiction of the twentieth century. A voter said: “For the borough not to

honour him in this way would be the equivalent of Baker Street ignoring Sherlock Holmes!”

Long-time Peckham resident Barbara Steveni, who died in 2020, has been described as “the most important artist nobody’s heard of” - who “expanded the possibilities of what art could be”.

She co-founded and ran the Artist Placement Group (APG) from the 1960s, an organisation that placed artists inside big businesses and government agencies to try and bridge

the gap.

One voter called her an “amazing artist, activist and philanthropist”, whose work “will continue to inspire generations of artists and scholars across the globe.”

Francis Peek, a nineteenth century businessman and philanthropist, is responsible for Dulwich Park becoming public land - an enormous, thirteenyear undertaking involving huge sums of money, elections, debates and finally a law being passed by Parliament.

He also donated considerable sums to get churches built across south London and was instrumental in hundreds of schools for ordinary children being launched.

The News would like to thank everyone who voted in the competition this year, as well as all those who put forward nominees. We would also like to encourage nominees for next year’s vote.

Southwark Heritage Association (SHA), which runs the programme in the borough, has put up more than 50 blue plaques commemorating people with local connections and Southwark institutions that are particularly worth knowing about since 2002.

The News is another of the programme’s founders, alongside Southwark Council. The scheme first came as a way of getting round the strict criteria put in place by English Heritage – which runs the national programme – that a building must be standing and a person dead to qualify.

But we rely on the people of Southwark to first say who or what they think should be honoured. After nominations have been vetted, a shortlist will be drawn up for people in the borough to vote on.

MARY SEACOLE PAINTING UNVEILED AT GUY’S HOSPITAL

A NEW painting honouring the Crimean War nurse Mary Seacole has been unveiled at Guy’s Hospital.

Artist Richard Wilson spent 600 hours over three months creating the 1.4 metre by 2.2 metre canvas, which depicts Mary in 1857 at her home in Soho Square in London.

Richard was commissioned by City & Docklands developers to provide a portrait of the Jamaican-born nurse as part of a wider regeneration scheme at Mary Seacole Memorial Park, just a stone’s throw away from Marys’ grave in north west London.

The Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation is working with City & Docklands on the project. Rather than let the artwork remain in storage, the painting is on loan to Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust until at least the end of 2022, and will eventually Mary Seacole painting at Guy’s Hospital

reside in its permanent home at the Mitre Yard development.

Members of staff from Guy’s Hospital were joined by the Mary Seacole Trust and City & Docklands to celebrate the new painting on what would have been Mary’s 216th birthday – the same day Jamaica declared 23 November as Mary Seacole Day. Avey Bhatia, Chief Nurse for Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Mary Seacole was an extraordinary individual and a great role model. Her writing, legacy and memory lives on and has touched the development of modern healthcare. I am delighted that we are able to host this beautiful painting

by Richard Wilson at Guy’s Hospital so our staff, patients and visitors can sit, reflect and be inspired by her.”

COVID-19 vaccine THE CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19) vaccine is safe and effective. It gives you the best protection against coronavirus. Guy’s and St Thomas’ is working hard to deliver the COVID-19 vaccine, including the booster dose, to as many people as possible.

Everyone aged 12 and over is now eligible for the vaccine.

Walk-in clinics are available at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals for those 16 and over. There is also a dedicated clinic at St Thomas’ for those 12-15 years, who can book an appointment or just turn up.

Anyone over 18 can book a vaccination appointment by visiting www.nhs.uk/ covidvaccination or by calling 119, free of charge. You may also be contacted directly by your hospital or GP.

Older people urged to take action to avoid falls

OLDER PEOPLE are being urged to get fit and active this winter, by doing specific strength and balance exercises that can reduce the likelihood of falling and being admitted to hospital. The call was issued by physiotherapists at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and lockdowns, many people have been less active, lost confidence and feel less steady.

The team provide strength and balance exercises in a variety of settings, including online and face-to-face groups, for people who have had a fall, nearly fallen or are worried about falling. Referrals can be made by health and social care professionals, family, carers and through self- referral.

Charlotte Williams, deputy clinical lead for the service at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “Exercises can be included easily into day-to-day activities, such as simple squats whilst the kettle is boiling. This

will not only help you to get fit and active but will also help your strength and balance. It’s about doing more of these exercises, a little and often.”

Tips for staying active at home: • Get up more often and move around frequently. Join your local walking group, take a Thai Chi, yoga or any other exercise class • Make your home and garden safer, clear trip hazards particularly on stairs, hallways and in the garden • Get regular checks of your eyesight and hearing, and wear your glasses and hearing aid • Check your footwear - your shoes and slippers should fit properly • If you have any dizziness or fainting speak to your GP. Bermondsey’s brilliant Brazilian secret

It seems that nobody knew that in the heart of Bermondsey was a brilliant Brazilian restaurant that goes by the name Fine Cut Butchers. I broached the topic with several locals who didn’t believe that in the nondescript Blue Anchor Lane was one of the best places for meat in town.

That lack of knowledge should change right now, writes Michael Holland.

From the outside it looks like a butcher’s, but once inside there is a deli, a coffee shop, and tucked away round the back is a bijou restaurant to die for - And that’s before a morsel of food has passed my lips.

The menu was a mix of mouthwatering beef options and dishes from Brazil that the lovely ladies attending to us were more than willing to explain and describe. I threw myself at the mercy of the fine folk at Fine Cut Butchers and let them take charge of what I would be dining on, and they did not disappoint.

Almost immediately two finely crafted Caipirinhas appeared for myself and the Ballerina to sip on.

Next, we were invited to take a look at the marvellous array of meat from which to choose our cut for the night.

I pointed at one and the Dancer pointed at another.

Back at the table, a rather moreish red wine from Italy was poured, quickly followed by three dishes of starters. I recognised the olives, and I could see one was fried chicken (with a Brazilian twist we soon discovered), but there was a UFO on the table (unidentified food object). I love a UFO so I tucked in straightaway, and it was deliciously soft, succulent and flavoursome. What else do you need? We were told it was Palm Hearts, and also informed about how they are very important to Brazilian food culture.

The Caipirinhas kicked in, the red wine began mellowing me out, and all of a sudden the chef was there with some mighty slabs of red meat asking how we wanted them cooked.

Looking like they still had a pulse I wanted to make sure they were dead and had written a will before I started eating them, but the Ballerina told him ‘medium rare’ and off he went.

Very soon the air was filled with the aroma of seared beef and not long after a fat, juicy rump was placed in front of me and a sizzling sirloin appeared on the other side of the table. Our eyes widened but not as

wide as these two steaks. While we considered where to begin another server came with the sides. The rice and vinaigrette (fantastically sharp) were easily identifiable and what looked like chunky chips was fried cassava (delicious), but the surprise of the night was the Tropeiro Beans.

On the menu, the ingredients they came with (farofa, kale, bacon, eggs, butter, banana) read like breakfast, lunch, and dessert all in one go, but it was amazing. Truly amazing.

We set about our table full of food with gusto, but it wasn’t long before we were slowing down, although making sure we were getting through

it all. It was too good not to eat!

We eventually managed most of the meat-feast, and after a decent time for discussion on the finer points of beef, our delightful hosts sweet-talked us into desserts. One was a simple but tasty Creme Caramel but the other was a very special Açai Bowl, which not only looked great but consisted of açai palm fruit puree with condensed milk, strawberries, and banana. We fought over it, and I didn’t win!

We agreed that we had experienced the greatest meat feast that we can recall and that this place is a hidden gem in SE16 that the world should know about.

(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) 1.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable bridge works and deliveries, it made an order, the effect of which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Whilst the works are in progress, or whilst the authorised traffic signs are displayed, no person shall cause any vehicle to enter, proceed, stop, wait, load or unload in: (a) Bellenden Road, between side of No’s 1 and No’s 89/91 (b) Gedling Place, between Druid Street by railway bridge

Waiting/Loading Restrictions and Parking Places (f) To provide extended lengths of ‘at any time’ waiting restrictions (double yellow lines) in:MELBOURNE GROVE (i) the north-east side between a point 8.5 metres north-west of the north-western kerb-line of Tell Grove and a point 15 metres south-east of the south-eastern kerb-line of Tell Grove; and (ii) on the south-west side between the common boundary of Nos. 48 and 48c Melbourne Grove and a point 17.5 metres north-west of that common boundary; and in (iii) TELL GROVE on both sides between the north-eastern kerb-line of Melbourne Grove and a point 8 metres north-east of that kerb-line.

Lynn duo round off 2021 in style

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk LYNN ABC had two boxers in action at the Alliance England national novice finals at the Roundhouse in Dagenham last weekend – and walked away with two wins.

First up for Lynn was Cem Mumarren at under-57kg who fought Joe Palmer from Alma ABC. It was Mumarren’s first bout for the club and as there were only two entries in his weight class he had a straight final.

Mumarren boxed smartly from the first bell. It was a close fight after the first two rounds but Mumarren picked up the pace in the third and his opponent couldn’t match him.

Coach Terry Pearson said: “He listened to his corner and boxed to instruction. It was that [third] round that had him walking away with the victory.”

Nathan Angel was Lynn’s second boxer in action at under-91kg as he came up against Faisal Rustansingwo from Balham ABC.

Angel mixed it up in the first round, fighting on the inside and landing some big shots.

In the second and third rounds Angel showed his boxing skills as he consistently landed his jab to clinch the win on points.

“I am so pleased for both boxers,” Pearson added. “They have really been putting the work in over the last month or so.

“They will have a break now and I hope to have them both out early 2022.”

Nine-man Menace halt Velvet run

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MARY PHILLIP questioned the refereeing after Peckham Town ended their top-ofthe-table clash against Red Velvet with nine players – yet remarkably also ended their opponents’ 100 per cent record this season.

The visitors had won all twelve of their Kent County League Premier Division games before they travelled to The Menace Arena last weekend.

After a minute’s applause for Don Walters, life vice-president of Peckham Town who passed away at the weekend, Phillip was forced into two substitutions by the half-hour mark, with Tidian Barry and David Gabor coming on for Mustapha Hashemi and Joe Thomas.

Peckham increased the pressure before halftime and got their reward when Joshua Montella fired home a low shot.

Then came the game’s first moment of controversy. After the visitors had equalised five minutes into the second half, Montella was going through on goal when he appeared to be caught with a kick to the head. Rather than punishment for the away side, it was Peckham’s Nicky Meta who was given a red card for protesting.

Menace goalkeeper George Legg then turned hero, villain and hero again as he pulled off a brilliant double-save, gave away a penalty but then dived to his right to keep it out.

Legg made two more outstanding saves late on before Peckham finished with nine men after substitute Kieran Dowding had been sin-binned.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, it was the hosts who had the last chance as Montella crossed but Kevin Dance couldn’t reach the ball.

The result keeps five points between the teams, Peckham having played two games more.

“Nine-man Peckham holding out, and could have nicked it at the end, but when you are fighting against a team that is bossing the game [then it’s a good result],” Phillip said.

“I hate to say it, but the referee hasn’t given us anything. We had a man knocked down in the box with a cut on his head and the referee says he’s okay. It’s a head injury – you have to stop the game.

“And he then sends our captain off for telling the referee that he has a head injury, he needs to do his job and look after him. It’s not on.

“We also end up with four bookings today, and you’ve got to question that.

“But to get a draw from the game is not bad a result when you finish with nine men. It is how it is, it’s a good result for Peckham. The points are shared, and we can move forward.”

The Menace are away at Farnborough OBG this Saturday. Kick-off is 2pm.

Tyrone Sterling equalised for the Hamlet after Alfie Egan had given the lead to the visitors who then went into the break in front following Jack Paxman’s 42nd-minute goal.

Gavin Rose’s side were a place behind Ebbsfleet before the fixture but roared back in the second period in front of a sell-out 3,334 crowd.

Jordan Green’s goal in the 59th minute was followed up four minutes later by Darren McQueen who gave Hamlet a 3-2 advantage.

Dulwich virtually sealed three points when Giovanni McGregor added the fourth in the 81st minute and Andrew Harris-Sealy scored in the last minute for the top scorers in National League South.

The result moved Dulwich above Ebbsfleet into third, with 28 points from fifteen games, two points behind Oxford City and three off table-toppers Dartford.

This win underlined Dulwich’s progress this season, against a side that had ex-Charlton defender Chris Solly on the bench, though former Millwall left-back Joe Martin missed out through injury.

Dulwich had three former Ebbsfleet players in their team and another, Danny Mills, on the bench.

But it was an ex-Hamlet player in the Fleet side who first threatened. Ben Chapman thought he should have had a penalty after being taken down by Jordan Higgs.

Hat-tricks from Helen Ogle and Georgia Heasman, a brace from Kate Foster and a goal from Oana Negrea sealed an emphatic victory for the hosts.

Alyssa Miranda scored Millwall’s goal four minutes from time.

It was the Lionesses’ first league defeat under Jack Wheeler, and a first in seven games.

Foster put Fulham ahead in the first minute and the home side doubled their lead nine minutes later when Heasman fired in the rebound after Negrea’s effort.

It was 3-0 in the fifteenth minute as Negrea shot past Chrissie Wiggins from 20 yards and the Cottagers had a fourth two minutes later through Foster.

Egan crossed for Paxman and he nodded home.

And Dulwich could have been 3-1 down heading into the break only for Will Wood’s fierce effort to slam off the crossbar.

Grainger then tipped over Bingham’s Millwall tried to respond but Chloe Burr sent a free-kick over the crossbar 30 minutes in.

Fulham extended their lead to 5-0 in the 31st minute through Ogle.

Wheeler’s side were having no luck as a minute before the break they got a rare chance but Lottie Ivison’s attempt hit the post.

Fish denied landmark outing

The Fish were set to take on rivals Stansfeld in the second round of the SCEFL Challenge Cup at Glebe’s ground.

The pitch was already boggy before the storm and it was decided it was unplayable.

The new date has been set for Tuesday, January 11.

Ajay Ashanike’s side lost 1-0 away to Kennington in their SCEFL Premier Division clash last weekend.

The Fish are thirteenth in the table and their next league game as at Deal Town on Saturday, December 18.

YOU COULD probably guess what Millwall fans were thinking when they heard Peterborough were on their longest run without scoring in 20 years: “Hand them the three points now.”

It’s the kind of statistic that brings out the fatalism in supporters.

There is also the fact that the Lions have conceded five goals on each of their last two visits to London Road, a 5-3 defeat and 5-1 defeat in League One in 2015 and 2016.

Posh have blanked in their last five games, against Fulham, Stoke, Blackburn, Barnsley and Nottingham Forest.

Darren Ferguson’s side haven’t won since a 2-1 victory at home to QPR on October 23 and are 22nd in the Championship table, five points off Cardiff as the bottom three are in danger of being cut adrift.

Ferguson sensed déjà vu at Forest.

“It was the same old story,” he said.

“We played well for large parts. We had two very good chances at 0-0 and we have to take one.

“I keep saying the same things, but I can’t change what I see. When we were on top we just had to get ahead and we didn’t do that.”

Rowett has paired Tom Bradshaw and Benik Afobe recently and that has paid dividends, the duo getting six goals and two assists between them in six games.

Rowett has played a two- and threeman attack this season in different setups. In the 3-1 win against Birmingham last Saturday, Jed Wallace was often in a free role behind Afobe and Bradshaw.

Afobe is excited by the potential of the attack.

He said: “In this team what I like

about our forwards is every single one of us is completely different, bringing different things to the team and the squad.

“As much as it’s nice to play with Jed Wallace and Mason Bennett, it’s also nice to play with Tom Bradshaw, Matt Smith, Sheyi Ojo. I played with Connor Mahoney at Bournemouth.

After their second-highest home attendance of the season against Birmingham last weekend, defender Danny McNamara wants the side to build on that win in front of a bumper travelling crowd on Saturday.

“We’ve sold out our allocation which will be a massive boost for us. We’ve got to try and put in another performance like we did on Saturday,” McNamara said.

“We’ve got a good side this season.

The depth we’ve got is so important for us to push on. If we can stay near the

top six in January hopefully we can kick on and try to secure a play-off spot.

“It’s nice at the moment to have a bit of a break between each game because we know we’ve got a big period coming up in a few weeks.

Millwall very rarely score more than one goal let alone three - it was the first time the Lions have managed to register more than two goals in a league game since the 4-1 drubbing of Bristol City back in May. Had it not been for Birmingham goalkeeper Neil Etheridge it would have been a lot more. Lee Bowyer’s Blues were lacklustre and the hosts were in no mood not to take advantage of that.

Gary Rowett’s side had nine shots on target from nineteen attempts and should have dragged their goal difference further into the black.

The Lions have started slowly and gone behind in far too many games this season for their liking, but roared on from the start by the majority of the 14,324 crowd they never looked like they would be again trying to claw back a deficit.

There was a poignant moment in the sixth minute of the game, as the ball was kicked out of play and both sets of players joined the fans in a touching minute’s applause in memory of Arthur LabinjoHughes, the six-year-old Birmingham boy who was killed by his father and stepmother in a case that has shocked the nation.

Millwall got the breakthrough their early dominance deserved in the eleventh minute through an Adam Barrett-devised short-corner routine. Scott Malone took it and received a return pass from Benik Afobe as George Evans moved free of the visiting defence and into position for a shot from Malone’s low delivery. That attempt was blocked – with assistant

Billy Mitchell gave a manof-the-match performance manager Barrett thinking the chance had gone – but Murray Wallace was in the right place to slam home his fourth goal of the season.

Millwall didn’t look back after that.

It could and should have been 2-0 but Etheridge denied Jake Cooper before Afobe planted another header wide of the post.

Afobe and Tom Bradshaw have certainly built up a good understanding in recent weeks. They combined for the equaliser at Hull and their link-up play here was again impressive.

Bradshaw made it 2-0 before the break from another corner from Malone but this time a direct one. Simple and clinical, Malone curled in the delivery from the left and Bradshaw thumped home his header to score in successive league games for the first time since December 2020.

Rowett was overseeing his 100th league

game in charge and his team should have extended their advantage but Etheridge this time thwarted Bradshaw.

Blues brought in Troy Deeney over the summer and he once again reminded people of the quality that he still possesses. A quick one-two with Scott Hogan and the former Watford captain smashed an effort past Bartsoz Bialkwoski.

Suddenly, unexpectedly, it appeared to be game on.

Millwall, though, didn’t panic. Afobe was next to test Etheridge, before the Lions got their third.

This time Danny McNamara and Jed Wallace combined on the right from a throw-in. Wallace delicately lifted the ball back into McNamara’s path, and the defender had to fend off Kristian Pederson before running into the box and cutting back for Evans, who produced a

delightful curling left-footed finish into the top-left corner from fifteen yards.

It was Evans’ second goal for Millwall after his injury-time equaliser at Luton last February. With the ability to strike the ball like that he should be a source of more goals.

Etheridge had to be on top form once again to pull off a brilliant double-save, denying Jed Wallace and then Malone pushing the latter’s shot over the bar.

Former Charlton striker Chuks Aneke fired wide of the far post late on but Birmingham very rarely troubled the Lions’ goal.

Rowett said it was the best his side had played over the course of 90 minutes in the league this season. The Lions did not give Blues a moment’s rest. The crowd bought into it and really got behind the players - something that gives Millwall a significant advantage when playing at home.

Rowett was forced into changes before kick-off after Daniel Ballard’s knee surgery. Malone and Cooper returned and, perhaps surprisingly, George Saville was left out, Evans in.

Millwall have fluidly changed between formations in recent months. This was often 3-4-1-2 with Wallace behind Afobe and Bradshaw and Malone high on the left. When Malone defends deeper Bradshaw drifts out to that left side.

Billy Mitchell once again showed his class in central midfield. He has played every minute of the last eight games. The 20-year-old has improved hugely this season, particularly in possession.

The gap to the play-offs is four points and if Millwall can keep it around that or narrow it in January then you wouldn’t back against them launching a top-six push.

DANNY MCNAMARA picked a good time to get his first assist of the season against Birmingham City last weekend.

It was a reminder of his attacking ability after an injury to Ryan Leonard means that McNamara could face new competition for his place in January.

With Leonard and Daniel Ballard both ruled out until next February or March, Millwall will try to sign a rightsided defender in next month’s transfer window.

McNamara saw off the challenge of Mahlon Romeo last season when almost everything went right for him following his return from his loan spell at St Johnstone.

Former Ireland Under-21 international McNamara went straight into the Lions’ first team, making his debut in the 2-0 win over Boreham Wood in the third round of the FA Cup in January.

He made seventeen appearances for Millwall last season, barely giving Romeo a look-in.

But this campaign hasn’t been quite as plain-sailing. A groin injury in August put him out for six weeks and when Leonard was preferred at right wing-back it was another six weeks between starts against Luton – when he was taken off at half-time – and Bournemouth, after Leonard picked up an ankle injury.

When asked about McNamara’s lack of playing time, Lions boss Gary Rowett said one of the reasons was he needed to add more attacking end product to his game.

Millwall’s regular left wing-back, Scott Malone, has scored eight goals since the start of the 2020-21 season and is a consistent threat to the opponents’ goal.

McNamara helped make the game safe against Blues last weekend. He combined with Jed Wallace from a throw-in and then beat Kristian Pedersen in a tackle before pulling the ball back for George Evans to fire in the third.

“It was a bit of a relief,” McNamara admitted. “I’ve been getting into the right areas but getting assists and goals is something I wanted to add to my game. Hopefully I can push on now and get some more now I’ve got my first.

“It helps playing with a class player, linking up with Jed, he flicked it over the top and I got in. I was delighted to get that first assist of the season.

“I’ve been doing a lot with [Adam Barrett] and [Paul Robinson] during the week, trying to do as much as possible in crossing drills.

“It’s just about getting the ball out of my feet and putting it into dangerous areas, getting it to that back stick, cutbacks like the one on Saturday, just constantly working on it.

“We do that with all the full-backs, to be fair, Scotty Malone joins in, myself, Ryan Leonard when he was fit. It’s something we practise quite a bit.

“Scotty played very high [against Birmingham], almost like a left-winger.

It’s actually really nice because if you over-hit a cross you know he’s probably going to be on the back stick.

“Scotty’s someone I look up to and can learn a lot from, his numbers this season, last season were very good. He’s a top, top player in this league.

“He’s always talking to me, advising me and giving me little tips here and there.

Scotty’s a good lad.”

A feature of the third goal was how McNamara ran inside Wallace instead of over-lapping him.

changed in recent years from the time they were mostly expected to run in straight lines up and down the pitch.

Pep Guardiola encourages his fullbacks to almost take up a position in central midfield depending on the phase of play.

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander Arnold and Reece James are also leading the charge of the new breed of full-back that is comfortable on the ball in central areas.

McNamara knows the value of that ability.

“Naturally I like to change it up a bit, go inside or outside to keep the defender on his toes,” McNamara said.

“When I do go inside I do like that midfield role, getting the ball on the

half-turn. As a full-back you naturally probably could play centre-mid because you’re constantly on the ball.

“I like to go inside and playing five at the back you can do that.

“It was nice to score three goals. It was a long time coming, we’ve created a lot of chances but maybe they’ve not fallen in the right positions to get the goals.

“But on Saturday it all came together right. To go two goals up felt nice but then they obviously scored and had a bit of pressure. We managed to get that third goal to kill them off.”

It was a good response from Millwall to the news late last week that Ballard and Leonard would both be out for three months after knee and ankle surgery, respectively.

McNamara has previously said how impressed he has been with Ballard after the centre-back’s loan move from Arsenal.

“It’s a massive blow, you’ve seen how much of an impact he’s had since coming in,” McNamara continued. “He nailed that position down and has probably been one of our best players this season.

It’s so frustrating and I feel sorry for him.

“He was smashing it and he was absolutely gutted when he found out the news.

“But even when there are setbacks there can be positives and he’ll probably come back even stronger.

“I wish him all the best and a speedy recovery.”

Asked if he expects new competition

in January, McNamara said: “Potentially, yeah. Ryan Leonard came into the team and he nailed down his position.

“It’s good, healthy competition, we’ve got a lot of depth in positions this season.

“Unfortunately Ryan’s got injured and whatever happens happens in January, whether we try to strengthen and push on for the play-offs.”

McNamara understood why he was left out of the side this season. He said: “It’s one of those things where we’ve got depth in so many positions and Lenny came in and did really well.

“Me being a young player, it happens, you’re going to be in and out of the team.

It happens with everyone.

“We got results on the board, which is all that matters, really.”

Lions spring into action

Defensive reinforcements now January priority

The Lions have prioritised the right side of their defence, with Daniel Ballard and Ryan Leonard both expected to be out until February or March.

Ballard and Leonard have had knee and ankle surgery, respectively, and are set to miss the majority of the rest of the season.

Millwall already wanted to sign at least an attacking player in January, but need to try to offload Ben Thompson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson. Winger Connor Mahoney could also be available

after he has failed to impress since his move from Bournemouth in 2019.

The Lions have been linked with a move for Arsenal forward Folarin Balogun who is set to be allowed to leave on loan in the next transfer window.

Millwall’s attack has found form recently, with Tom Bradshaw netting four times and Benik Afobe getting two goals and two assists in their last six games.

Defence has now become the main problem to be solved.

Shaun Hutchinson moved to the right side of a back three in Ballard’s absence as the Lions defeated Birmingham City 3-1 at The Den last weekend, but ideally boss Gary Rowett wants to play him centrally.

George Evans – who scored Millwall’s third goal against Blues – can play on the right side of a back three but Rowett sees him as primarily a midfielder.

Billy Mitchell has played right wing-back but has recently excelled in his natural midfield position, playing every minute of the last eight games.

Millwall are now scouring the market for defenders. Rowett has good connections with Liverpool and one option could be their 24-year-old centre-back Nathaniel Phillips.

Phillips played 20 times last season in the Premier League and Champions League after injuries to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip.

But he hasn’t started a game for

Liverpool this season. Millwall have previously watched Phillips and could go back to Liverpool for the second time this campaign after signing Sheyi Ojo on loan in the last transfer window.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DANNY MCNAMARA is on Republic of Ireland boss Stephen Kenny’s radar for next year – but the Millwall defender knows he must nail down a first-team place to fulfil his international dream.

McNamara, 22, was given his Ireland under-21 debut by now senior boss Kenny.

The next international break is in March when there will be friendly games and the next Nations League starts in June 2022.

Kenny had a difficult start to his Ireland reign, not winning his first competitive game until the thirteenth outing.

But he has been building for the future, including playing former Millwall loan midfielder Jayson Molumby, who was McNamara’s captain in the under-21s.

McNamara missed six weeks through injury this season and then went another six weeks without a start as Ryan Leonard was preferred at right wing-back.

But with Leonard out McNamara is back in the side and determined to keep his place and earn a senior international call-up.

“To be fair, the last couple of months I’ve been in and out of the [Millwall] squad a bit with injury and stuff,” McNamara said when asked if he has been in consideration by Ireland’s senior management.

“I have had a bit of contact with Stephen and his scout so we have been chatting. Hopefully if I can secure my position in the Millwall team and keep playing every week, then next year there might be some good news for myself and my family.

“But I have to keep playing well for Millwall and then we’ll see what happens.”
