charles@southwarknews.co.uk The approval of eight new council flats on the Kingston Estate, Walworth, saw emotional outbursts from residents and one council member receiving a round of applause, at a planning meeting on Tuesday that saw a total of 52 homes being approved across the borough.

The planning was given approval, but the

decision was not unanimous - there were four votes in favour, with two against.

Residents argued passionately against the proposal, with key points raised being the loss of green space for children and questions about the validity of the consultation process.

The meeting saw several interruptions, including one resident crying out, “there is no space!” Other residents argued that there had been little consultation, despite claims from the developer that they had sent several newsletters.

The new homes, on a garage site on the corner of Fenwick Road and Nutbrook Street, to the east of Peckham Rye Park, were approved unanimously at the meeting.

Some local residents think the three and four-storey building is too high and out of character with the local area. Southwark Council planners, who recommended the new building be approved, said: "Whilst the building is larger and bulkier than the surrounding residential buildings, this is acceptable for a corner location."

Speaking at the meeting on behalf of a group of neighbours on Nutbrook Street, one woman hit out at the new homes team for what she claimed was an "inaccurate consultation process" and the "inappropriate scale of the proposed build." She claimed, residents’ views had not been taken into account during the consultation.

The council officer maintained that five virtual consultation meetings were held and that plans were adapted to reflect current residents' opinions.

Eight new homes on Pynfolds Estate in Bermondsey

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An 'infill' project to build eight more council flats in an existing Bermondsey estate was unanimously approved.

The new flats will go on a car park site in the north-east corner of the Pynfolds Estate off Jamaica Road, in a part-five and part-six storey block.

The architects for the new building conceded that it would be disruptive for the people already living in the estate's 103 existing flats, but said that "mitigation" measures should be put in place.

The planning application has more than twenty comments objecting to the plans, with one in favour. Residents' arguments against the new build include concerns about possible shadowing effects, loss of parking and the effect on William Gaitskell House, a grade-II listed building on Paradise Street, opposite the planned site.

Recommending the application, Tooley Street planners pointed out that car parks were not protected in planning policy and said that the plans make an "efficient" use of space. "The height, scale, massing and detailed design of the proposed building are appropriate within the context of the site," they added.

Block of flats with 21 council homes in Gipsy Hill

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A new block of 21 council flats in Gipsy Hill got planning permission despite some debate about their effect on a nearby conservation area.

The five- and six-storey building, which will be on unprotected green space at the corner of Gipsy Hill and Woodland Green, will sit alongside two other seven-floor council blocks.

The new building will be right on the boundary between Southwark and Lambeth.

Across the road is Lambeth's Gipsy Hill conservation area, mostly made up of nineteenth-century buildings.

Cllr Martin Seaton said that he was surprised that the architects had chosen not to reflect the conservation area in their plans, instead designing the new building to look similar to the two other housing blocks.

Architects said that they had originally designed a row of terraced houses, but that residents said they would prefer "a building

whose silhouette was simple and direct."

They added: they had an "incredibly strong response" from the local community and councillors that the building "was not of the conservation area" but rather a "missing tooth from a cluster of three" blocks. The decision was "certainly not a projection of the architects’ ego," they added.

The new building was unanimously approved.

The new flats will come in a five-storey corner building, with four flats and a three two-storey terraced houses, on the corner of Fort Road and Balaclava Street at the edge of the Longfield Estate.

Concerns had been raised by local residents about the loss of open space at the site, although the council said it was not protected land.

Other objections included the effect of the new buildings on the nearby Thorburn Square conservation area, largely made up of low terraced houses.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark statue considered to be the oldest outdoor statue in the capital has been found to date back further than previously thought - all the way back to Roman times.

The bottom half of the Alfred the Great statue in Trinity Church Square was discovered by conservationists to likely date back to the 2nd century, around the reign of Hadrian.

During conservation work, stonemasons found that the lower body was made from Bath stone, a material commonly used by Roman sculptors.

Bath Stone is a freestone, meaning it can be cut in any direction, unlike other rocks such as slate, which forms distinct layers. It is a golden colour that seems to glow in sunlight.

The lower half of Alfred the Great is now thought to be part of a colossal ancient sculpture dedicated to the goddess Minerva.

The Heritage of London Trust said to another publication that the original statue was around three metres in height, “making it the most significant native stone sculpture yet to be found from Roman Britain.”

Nicola Stacey, Director, Heritage of London Trust, said: ”It’s been wonderful to restore the

statue and at the same time inspire local children with the curiosity of the story.

“Over the summer pupils visited and met the stonemasons, so they’ve been involved from the beginning. It’s exactly what we aim at for our Proud Places programme, building pride in their local area, and it would be great if we encouraged one or two young archaeologists as well.”

In Roman religion, Minerva was the goddess of handicrafts, the professions, the arts, and, later, war.

The top half of the statue is Coade stone - a mix of clay, terracotta, silicates, and glass invented in the 1770s. It was fired for four days at a time in incredibly hot kilns.

Fitting the Coade Stone onto the Bath Stone, therefore, would have been difficult, as the Coade Stone clay would have shrunk during firing.

Alfred, King of Wessex, was a defender against the Viking invasion and a social reformer.

A legend tells that, when distracted by his problems, he allowed some cakes to burn while he was supposed to be watching them. He was roundly scolded by the woman whose baking was ruined.

For the first time Trinity Church Square, a private garden square accessible only to local residents, was open to the public, before closing again last Sunday, November 14.

Sharks, seahorses and eels return to the Thames still dangerous for some animals, the report said.

And it's not all good news. As well as the declining fish numbers, the effects of climate change on the Thames estuary are shown by the rising sea levels (4.26mm per year at Silvertown in east London) and increasing water temperatures (about 0.2?C per year in the Upper Thames).

Alison Debney, who helped write the report for ZSL, said: "Estuaries are one of our neglected and threatened ecosystems.

"They provide us with clean water, protection

from flooding, and are an important nursery for fish and other wildlife. The Thames Estuary and its associated 'blue carbon' habitats are critically important in our fight to mitigate climate change and build a strong and resilient future for nature and people.

"This report has enabled us to really look at how far the Thames has come on its journey to recovery since it was declared biologically dead, and, in some cases, set baselines to build from in the future."

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Sharks, seahorses and eels have been found in the Thames, marking an improvement from the 1950s, when the river was found to be "biologically dead," according to a new report.

But the State of the Thames report found that the number of fish species found in London's main river had gone down slightly since the 1990s, and it is unclear why.

Overall the Thames has made an "astounding recovery" since 1957, according to the Zoological Society for London, which produced the new report.

Birds and marine mammals have both seen short-term increases in population numbers.

The improvement in habitats for animals in the Thames comes partly from better water quality, thanks to updated sewage treatment works. The amount of sewage in the river is

The Old Bailey hears testimony of youths accused of murder By court reporter news@southwarknews.co.uk A mother stands accused of murder after she allegedly drove her son and his three teenage friends to kill a disabled youth in Sydenham.

Nicola Leighton, 36, her son Tyreese Ulysses, 19, together with three boys, aged 15, 16 and 17, allegedly murdered Levi ErnestMorrison, 17, in Sydenham.

Leighton and the four teenagers all deny murdering Levi, on April 10.

Leighton is said to have ‘rounded up’ four youths including her son to kill Levi, whom the court was told had autism.

She drove the alleged killers to Sydenham Road and encouraged them to chase after Levi and his friend, the prosecution say. But giving evidence earlier Leighton told the court she had no idea of what was going on.

This week at the Old Bailey trial one of the youths, who was among the group claimed he took a swipe at the victim but never made contact.

Giving evidence, the 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named and was fifteen at the time of the incident, said he didn’t know they were going to Hazel Grove where the killing took place.

During the journey he said he had taken the knife out of his trousers because it felt uncomfortable.

Caroline Carberry, QC, defending, asked: "What was the atmosphere like in the car?”

“Nicola was annoyed,” he replied.

“She was saying “those boys think they can come to my house… I don’t know what she said afterwards.”

He told jurors he didn’t know where they were going and that he left the car believing the intention was only to scare Levi.

His barrister asked: “Did you hurt anybody?”

“No,” he replied.

“We can see you in the footage swiping down in the direction of Levi.”

“Were you trying to make contact?” asked Ms Carberry.

"Did you make contact?”

“No,” he said.

“Why did you do that?”

“To warn him off,” he said, making

a gesture to indicate that Levi was reaching for something behind his back.

He said he stopped swiping after Levi fell over the cobblestones and one of his associates then ran past him and stabbed the victim.

“How did you react when that happened?” asked Ms Carberry.

“I didn’t know if I should help him or not," he said.

“I stood and watched. I didn’t see the blood, just the scream he let out.”

After the stabbing, the teenager said he went to his brother’s house who told him he could ‘get into a lot of trouble for this’.

Ulysses called him later that night and told him to ‘lay low’, the court heard.

Previously in the trial the court heard that the day after the attack Leighton is said to have contacted the 17-year-old and said he should try to get in contact with one of the 15-year-old boys because he wanted to hand himself in.

"I think he kind of understood that he was responsible,” said the 17-year-old, who also cannot be named.

“I know now it doesn’t work like that, but I think [Ulysses] was hoping that his mum would get released.”

Jurors heard the 17-year-old had a machete but it has never been recovered.

“Did you still have it with you when you found out Levi was the boy that was stabbed and had died?” asked his barrister, Christopher Henley, QC. “Yes,” he replied.

“I spoke to my mum about what happened. I explained to her my

role in it. Another family member came into the room as my mum was pretty upset. They said I shouldn’t have that in my house so they disposed of it.”

Mr Henley asked: “Have you ever said to anyone that you stabbed Levi?”

The 17-year-old replied: “No never.”

He insisted he was not lying and trying to shift blame onto his 15-year-old friend for what he allegedly did.

Although he pleaded guilty to possession of a machete, he said he did not use it or inflict any injury with it, nor did he intend to.

“The prosecution case is that, as Levi lay defenceless on the ground, you came over and pushed your machete into him, causing a fatal wound. Did you do this?" asked Mr Henley.

“No I didn’t," the teenager replied.

On 11 April, he had met up with two friends and they smoked cannabis together, the court heard.

“I was just taking a video of myself smoking,” he said.

Leighton, of Lockwood Close, Sydenham, and one of the 15 year-old boys, deny murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

Ulysses, of Catford, and the other two youths, deny murder.

The trial continues.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Twelve children were taken to hospital after the ceiling of a Dulwich school collapsed on Monday morning.

Three fire engines and around 20 firefighters were called to Rosemead Prepatory School on Thurlow Park Road at 9.22am. A ceiling on the second floor had collapsed.

They had the situation under control by 11.50. Eleven children and one adult have now been discharged from hospital for injuries from the collapse, with one child staying for observation.

Sixteen people were treated at the scene.

After a systematic search of the building, all children and staff were accounted for.

A spokesperson for the school said:

"This morning in one of our Year 3 classrooms, a ceiling collapsed resulting in the attendance of the emergency services. Some injuries were sustained and some of those involved have been taken to hospital and we are working with our students and families to support them.

“We are working closely with the authorities to understand the cause of the incident and we will provide more information as soon as we can. Parents and families can be reassured that the school day is continuing as usual today for the rest of the school."

A specialist Urban Search and Rescue team and equipment were also used to confirm the building was at no further risk of collapse.

Fire crews attended from West Norwood and Brixton fire stations.

The cause of the collapse has not yet been confirmed.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Teddy bears and pom poms adorn a tree in Herne Hill in celebration of the expansion of the Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) to North and South circular roads.

The expansion means that drivers of cars that are not ULEZ compliant will be charged a fee.

The decorations have been organised by community group Mums for Lungs, who campaign for better air quality to protect the health of young children. The spot in Herne Hill that has been decorated near the railway bridge is particularly polluted, exceeding WHO guidelines for Nitrogen Dioxide and Particulate Matter.

Claire McDonald, a volunteer with Mums for Lungs, said: “I’m really excited about the ULEZ because it feels like a really positive step towards reducing air pollution in London.

“I feel like often it’s framed in terms of “oh I’ve got to get rid of my car,” but actually it’s all about children’s health, and everyone’s health, and we’re living in a situation where we have terrible air quality. Anything that improves that is good in my book.

“I just want people to recognise that that’s what the ULEZ means.”

The decorations feature children’s inhalers that the volunteers collected over several months, and teddies with their lungs padded to emphasise them.

This was inspired by the illustrations on pacers - devices which help children use inhalers, and which feature pictures of teddies with their lungs visible.

“It’s very cute, if a little sinister at the same time,” joked Claire.

“We wanted to be a positive celebration but it’s obviously something that, on the flip side, can be quite depressing, so that’s what we’ve tried to capture.

“Loads of people have been involved - not only Mums for Lungs, but other neighbours and friends have been involved, because I think lots of people want to see proper steps taken to reduce air pollution and show support when something like that does happen.

“As someone who got rid of their car because of the ULEZ, I can only say that I feel really positive about that change.

We’ve just decided we don’t need a car in London, we’re going car free.

“I understand that people have had to get rid of their cars and potentially buy new ones, and I can understand that that

is a problem, but I think we have prioritise our children’s health.

“My husband has a small business near the junction and my concern for him is the air quality of where he works. I don’t think it will affect his customer base at all, but even if it did, I would rather that the air that he breathed was slightly better, because that area is terrible.

“It’s massively polluted, it’s disgusting, and I hate that he has to work there.”

Claire added that she would like to see the ULEZ extended beyond the boundaries, and see measures introduced to improve the safety of cycling.

The decorations will later be taken down and recycled.

Remembrance Day service at West Lane War Memorial

hundreds gather for services in Southwark

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Hundreds of people gathered in public services across Southwark on Remembrance Sunday to commemorate the lives of local people who died in wars.

People gathered in Bermondsey, including at West Lane War Memorial, the Old Jamaica Road war memorial and the Albert McKenzie war memorial on Tower Bridge Road.

Other services included the official Southwark service at the Southwark memorial on Walworth Square, a service at St Saviour's memorial on Borough High Street, and one at the Imperial War Museum.

Current and former members of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment and its various predecessors before reorganisations took part in the ceremony on Old Jamaica Road on Sunday, which was also the 100th anniversary of the war memorial.

Reminiscing about his time in the forces, one veteran told the News about how, decades ago, he and his fellow servicemen were once told they were going to be put on duty at Buckingham

Palace - only to be given the slightly more strenuous posting of Northern Ireland.

Local MP Neil Coyle and his predecessor Sir Simon Hughes were among those who laid wreaths at the Old Jamaica Road war memorial.

Later in the morning, a large congregation gathered for the service at the West Lane War Memorial, with local councillors, community groups, tenants’ and residents’ associations and youth organisations like the Scouts all paying tribute to the fallen with wreaths.

Representatives of the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe branch of the Royal British Legion and the local branch of the Poppy Appeal were also among those who laid wreaths.

It came after a huge crowd of local people, including councillors, schoolchildren and community groups gathered at the West Lane War Memorial in Bermondsey for Armistice Day last Thursday morning, November 11, to remember the wartime sacrifices made by previous generations.

Southwark Mayor Cllr Barrie Hargrove, council leader Cllr Kieron Williams, Sir Simon, police officers, as well as people representing a wide range of tenants' groups, schools and

local community organisations all laid wreaths at the war memorial.

Father Mark Nicholls, rector of St Mary's Rotherhithe, led the service, supported by Canon Gary Jenkins, vicar of St James and St Anne.

Fr Mark said: "Armistice Day is 103 years since the end of the First World War, 80 years since this part of London was bombed night by night, and soldiers, sailors and airmen who were lost in the war were summoned from homes in these communities.

"They were fathers, they were brothers, and it's fitting that we have so many children here today because when their fathers went away to war, often their children suffered, never saw them again.

"So this Armistice, the day on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, is the time when the guns fell silent.

"The two-minute silence is at the heart of our act of remembrance today.

Of remembrance of all those who gave their lives in war. And in the silence there is a time for reflection. A time for remembrance. A realisation of the human cost of the war.

"And it's also a time to pray. A time in

which the memory of the dead speaks loudly. A rare moment of collective peace.

A time to recall sacrifice, and to pledge ourselves anew in the cause of peace.

"A time to pray once again that nation will not take up war against nation any more."

The service also featured a band who played the Last Post and Reveille either side of the two minute silence.

Missing Rotherhithe dog ended up in Beckenham

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A dog that went missing from home in Rotherhithe has been found - in Beckenham, about seven miles to the south.

Timi, a golden-brown cross-breed terrier-hound mix, first went missing on Friday, November 5 and owner Csenge Foldesi and her partner looked for more than a week for her across the area.

She was eventually spotted by the train tracks in Beckenham, far to the south in the borough of Bromley, last Sunday, November 14. The people who found her took her to a local vet, who looked at her microchip and called Csenge.

Csenge said she wanted to thank everyone who helped out in the search for Timi across the last week.

"We are so grateful for everyone keeping their eyes out, spreading the word, putting up (and now taking down) posters and just keeping the faith in us!," she said.

"We reunited with Timi yesterday, one of the happiest day of our lives.

Rotherhithe ‘hit and run’ appeal

The incident took place near Nisa on Brunel Road at about 2pm. The man's life is not in danger. Police said the car driver did not stop and they were trying to find them.

A spokepserson for the Met said: "Police were called at 13:59hrs on Thursday, 11 November to reports of a collision involving a cyclist and a car on Brunel Road, Southwark.

"Officers and the London

Ambulance Service attended. A man was taken to a local hospital; his injuries were assessed as non-life threatening.

"The driver of the car failed to stop at the scene and enquiries are underway to trace them.

"Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 or tweet @ MetCC and quote CAD 3818/11NOV. "Alternatively, call the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson confirmed they sent an ambulance crew, who treated the man at the scene and took him to a hospital.

county lines gang jailed

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man from south London has been sent to prison for eight years and seven months for getting children to sell drugs in Sussex, in a complex operation with links to Southwark and Lambeth.

Ajay Stephens, 21, from South Norwood, ran a 'county lines' drug-dealing network running crack cocaine and heroin from London to Hastings.

Stephens was found guilty in May of two counts of arranging and facilitating the movement of people, and pleaded guilty in September 2020 to two counts of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. He was sentenced last Thursday , November 11, at Inner London Crown Court. He also pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and possession of a Class B drug (cannabis) with intent to supply last month, for which he was sentenced at the same time.

The court heard that he got unsuspecting women to book and pay for accommodation in Hastings and made two vulnerable teenage boys living in a care home travel from Manchester to sell drugs.

Police identified Stephens in March 2020 as the holder of the 'P line' drug operation. He was first arrested in March 2020, as police aimed first to protect the boys and get them out of the situation.

Officers continued to build a case against Stephens and he admitted to dealing drugs from April 2019. The court heard that 1.45kg of drugs had been sold between November 2019 and the end of March 2020 - generating a lot of cash for Stephens.

When he was out of the country his

19-year-old stepbrother Amun'Ra Teko, from the Loughborough Estate near Camberwell, and half-brother Shaquille Boreland, 26, of no fixed address, ran the line for him.

Stephens, Teko and Boreland were all charged and all pleaded guilty to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs. Teko and Boreland are still waiting to be sentenced.

Officers then discovered another drugs line, the 'JB line' after an arrest on the Old Kent Road. Boreland and another man, Tai Diedrick, 23, were stopped in a BMW in May 2020 and found to be hiding MDMA and cocaine hydrochloride in an air vent. Diedrick was found to have a phone running the 'JB line'.

Police joined the dots between the 'P line' they originally found and the 'JB line' running drugs from London to Kent - and six people were eventually convicted.

Diedrick, along with his associates Trey Foster, 27, of Myatts Field South, Lambeth, and Romario Genus, 19, of Paxton Grove, Croydon, pleaded guilty at separate hearings to conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

Diedrick also pleaded guilty to possession of criminal property.

Jamie Danquah, 23, of Strathmore Road, Croydon pleaded guilty in May 2021 to possession of criminal property and possession with intent to supply Class B drugs.

Boreland and Teko denied involvement but were found guilty by a jury in October.

Boreland was convicted of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs and Teko was convicted of conspiracy to supply Class A drugs.

All six men - Teko, Boreland, Diedrick, Foster, Genus and Danquah - await

sentencing.

Detective Sergeant Ray Sekalongo, who was the investigating officer for the ‘P’ and ‘JB’ line cases, said: “Our investigation started with Stephens, but long hours carrying out numerous enquiries and some good detective work led to seven people being convicted and two county lines being closed.

“However, most importantly our investigation led to two young, vulnerable boys being freed from Stephens’ grasp and safeguarded. People like Stephens do not care about the children or vulnerable people they exploit for their own financial gain. They are used as human shields to protect people like Stephens. Well, people like Stephens can no longer hide behind vulnerable adults and children because we are able to pursue those involved with exploiting people for drug supply, irrespective of whether a victim assists the police or not.

“Drugs cause misery for communities and devastate lives, which is why the Met will continue to robustly target line-holders such as Stephens and Diedrick. However, we cannot tackle the problem alone, which is why I would urge you share any information you have regarding drug dealing, exploitation, or violent crime in your area.

“We believe this is only the second time a jury has convicted someone of modern slavery offences in relation to county lines under the Modern Slavery Act 2015. I would like to use this opportunity to remind people of the signs to look out for that might indicate a child is involved in county lines, including them repeatedly going missing, suddenly having lots of money or new items such as fancy trainers, having two phones and being secretive about who they speak to."

Inspector Tom Cornish, Met Police’s neighbourhood inspector for Southwark, said: “As part of the standard roles of neighbourhood community officers, as well as dealing with community concerns, they will check on which wanted people live on their patch. Camberwell Neighbourhood officers called in at his family address after hearing he was wanted by the court. The officer spoke to him at the door. He was initially quite nervous, but still cooperative.

“And then suddenly, out of the blue, he fled and jumped out the window of his flat. It just shows how people can switch. He was only

wearing his underwear and socks.

“Officers dashed through the flat and followed him, vaulting several fences and chasing him down three streets, until he was found hiding in a stairwell in a housing estate.

“The man has now been charged.”

Preventing those accused of domestic violence from contacting their alleged victims is quite standard, added Inspector Cornish.

“The fact that he contacted her again, despite what the court said, will have added to the sense of fear and intimidation for her.

“It shows how seriously the Met takes domestic violence - we prioritise that.”

Wanted Camberwell man fled in his pants A man wanted for breaking his bail conditions has been caught and arrested by Camberwell Neighbourhood officers after fleeing through the streets of Camberwell in his underwear in the middle of the day, writes Kit Heren...

Southwark Businesses at their very best

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Businesses across Southwark have been celebrated with the announcement of the Southwark Business Resilience Awards winners.

8,436 votes cast decided the winners amongst 52 finalists across nine categories, with beauty and fitness clinic Bodytonic Clinic in Canada Water clinching the top spot of Business of the year.

The awards, arranged in association with London South Bank University (LSBU), were presented by TV host Fayon Dixon in an online ceremony that reached more than 200 people.

Company director of Bodytonic Clinic, James Gill, said on the night: “I am so proud, the team will be ecstatic when I tell them. I won Entrepreneur of the year a few years back, but for me it has always been about the team.

“I had quite a difficult start in my career working for other people and so when we started Bodytonic Clinic I wanted it be a business which invested in people and their careers, allowing them to grow, develop and gain experience – and have fun.

“It has been fantastic to see the good in so many businesses. COVID has been tough for everyone but it has been inspiring the way in which businesses have supported each other and residents.”

Another business celebrated for its reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic was UK Homes 4 Heroes, which nabbed the Local Lockdown Hero award.

UK Homes 4 Heroes, founded in 2010, helps to ensure that ex-service personnel enjoy clean living environments and a place where they can feel at home.

They help former soldiers find a permanent home through private and social housing, and often assist with a grant.

“I was absolutely lost for words,” said Michelle Thorpe who co-runs the charity.

“We really worked hard is the thing, added co-runner Jimmy Jukes. “We were doing 7 days a week, feeding hundreds of people.

“We were doing it when others closed their gates”

There are more than 4,500 ex-service members of the British Armed Forces which are homeless throughout the UK, a number which the charity expects to rise in the future.

Local Lockdown Hero was sponsored by Elephant and Castle Town Centre, whose team said: “Our winner UK Homes 4 Heroes have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic supporting UK Homes 4 Heroes local ex-service personnel to find permanent homes through private and social housing.

“Alongside this, their extensive outreach work has fed over 250 homeless people every week during the pandemic, with the team getting up at the crack of dawn to collect and deliver food to those who need it most.

“At a time when so many people have been struggling, UK Homes 4 Heroes have stepped up for Southwark and helped the Southwark community through this difficult time.

“We are so proud to be sponsoring this award, which is a very small way for us to say a very big thank you to all the local heroes who have helped our communities throughout the last 18 months.” The charity is currently running a fundraiser on JustGiving search UK Homes 4 Heroes to find it.

Southwark community group is leading New network launched the way to help fight climate change to focus on community and faith leaders

Civil Society Consulting CIC will be using the large grant to create a Community and Faith Leaders Network focused on climate action learning.

The Network will provide training to civil society and faith leaders to encourage local community initiatives inspired by climate action, with an initial target of 60 leaders later expanding to 400.

Councillor steps in to help community blighted by noise Exclusive

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A top Southwark councillor has told the developers of the borough’s biggest-ever building project to change their working hours so local residents don’t have to endure drilling noise and dust all day.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, who is a ward councillor for Rotherhithe, where British Land is building the Canada Water masterplan, as well as the council’s cabinet member for social housing, said she had asked the giant developer to switch to a two hours on-two hours off working regime, to spare residents the frequent daytime piling noise that has caused them misery in recent months.

This work schedule is already in place on other parts of the masterplan.

Cllr Cryan said she was still very supportive of the overall project, but understood that this stage of the building work on the ‘A2’ site to the west of Canada Water Dock was “particularly noisy” for the people already living in the area.

“I know this is really disruptive for people,” she said. “I told [British Land] ‘look, you know, you need to [switch to a less disruptive schedule].’”

A two hours on-two hours off plan has been put in place for the noisiest work on site, although other work is going on in the meantime. Builders Mace are looking at other ways to cut down the disruption.

Several residents of Hothfield Place, next to the A2 site, told the News earlier this month of the “almost unbelievable” disruption to their lives.

As well as the drilling noise, people on the street complained about the dust that made their houses like a “prison” and an incident when a machine malfunctioned, spraying muddy water over their back

gardens.

British Land said previously that its “top priority is the health and safety of our employees and the communities where we work”.

The £3.3bn Canada Water Masterplan will see the transformation of 53 acres of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays over fifteen years.

The colossal scheme, the largest in Southwark history, is set to create around 3,000 new homes, of which 35 per cent are affordable, as well as up to 20,000 new jobs and other community facilities.

The plan has been controversial, with some locals mounting an unsuccessful legal campaign to block the new works in 2020.

Led by intelligence, detectives from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, with armed officers, stopped two cars driving in convoy in Crossthwaite Avenue, near Green Dale Fields.

Officers found a PM63 RAK machine pistol, capable of fully automatic fire, hidden within a speaker on the rear seat of one of the cars. The firearm was made safe and has been sent off for testing.

The drivers of the vehicles, two men aged 31 and 53, were arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent.

They were taken to a south London police station where they remain in custody.

Detective Chief Inspector Victoria Sullivan, from the Met's Specialist Crime Command, said:“We remain dedicated to

making London a safer place for everyone by carrying out operations such as this one. We will continue to disrupt those intent on committing violent crime on our streets.”

Detective Chief Inspector Daniel Smith, from the Central South Command, which covers Southwark and Lambeth, said: “I know this lethal weapon being recovered on the streets of Southwark will cause concern for local residents. But let me assure you that firearms have no place on our streets and we are doing everything in our power to arrest those who carry and supply guns.

“However, we cannot tackle this issue alone and we rely on information from the public to help us to robustly tackle gun crime. Any information you have, no matter how small, can really help our investigations."

pump to be fixed to help clear out harmful weed A water pump and borehole on a Rotherhithe dock will be fixed to stop the damaging weed and algae covering the surface.

British Land, the developers behind the Canada Water masterplan, the biggest building project in Southwark's history, are rehabilitating the pump and borehole as part of the scheme and putting in a new drainage system that will capture and filter rainwater from surrounding areas.

Once working properly again, the equipment will supply fresh groundwater into Canada Water Dock, along with the urban drainage system, to raise water levels and improve water quality in the dock.

British Land said the higher water level will help re-establish the wetland ecosystem along the western edge of the dock. Higher water levels in the dock will also restore water flows through Albion Channel and Surrey Water, which will improve water quality and

oxygenation in those water bodies.

This in turn should reduce algae blooms and contamination leading to a healthier ecosystem in the wider water network.

Michael Delfs, development executive at British Land, said: “Rehabilitating the aquifer pump and implementing a new sustainable urban drainage system as part of the Canada Water Masterplan gives us an opportunity to improve water levels, water quality, and water circulation, enhancing the health of the wetland ecosystem within the Dock, as well as within the wider water network of Albion Channel and Surrey Water.

"To facilitate this, we are working closely with the London Wildlife Trust and Southwark Council to create a flagship example of an urban wetland habitat and conservation project.”

It comes after volunteers led by the Surrey Docks Angling Club recently spent a Saturday cleaning the weed out of the Albion Channel.

Martha Pazienti Caidan, 28, was told about veteran BBC Radio presenter Annie Nightingale’s “wonderful” scholarship earlier this month. It has been set up to celebrate and elevate women and non-binary people in the electronic music scene by giving them with a national platform to showcase their talents.

Martha has her roots in community radio and documentary making, and likes to craft a narrative over the course of her radio shows.

She said: “I think about curating the songs to build a narrative that runs throughout the programme and guides the listener through new sounds from the world of electronic music.

"I’ve learnt most of what I know about presenting and interviewing from listening to Annie Nightingale.

I particularly admire her journalistic

Peckham DJ wins BBC Radio scholarship approach to music radio.

“The scholarship is a wonderful sign of recognition from Annie that I think will give me the confidence to continue pursuing broadcasting.”

Annie Nightingale, who first joined Radio 1 over 50 years ago, said: “I was the first ever female DJ on radio and am now the longest serving presenter of any gender.

“Ever since I began, I have wanted to help other young broadcasters passionate about music to achieve their dreams on the airwaves, and now, we can put that on a proper footing."

Martha added that one of the main struggles facing women and nonbinary people in the DJ industry right now is safety.

“Clubs aren't always the safest places to be,” she said. “It can be hard to relax and have the opportunity to concentrate on enjoying the music.

“That's one of the reasons I started Tempo, a run club for DJs & musicians

where we spend time together outside of the club setting.”

Tempo is a community of musicians and DJs who go running together every Tuesday at Peckham Levels.

Martha’s health is currently the biggest thing holding her back in her career.

She said: “This year I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and subsequently, Graves’ disease which is an autoimmune condition.

“I'm learning about how much my body can cope with, and how to fit in all the things I want to do.

It's frustrating sometimes but it's something i'm learning to respect and manage.”

The other two DJs selected for the scholarship are artist and DJ LCY from Bristol, and Australian DJ, songwriter, and music producer Annabel Hartlett, known by her stage name Godlands.

Each act will appear in a special edition of Annie Nightingale Presents on Radio 1.

Vet bill fundraiser for injured church cat A fundraiser has been launched for a cat living at Holy Trinity Church in Rotherhithe, after she was badly injured by a car earlier this month.

Pushka ran off from the Bryan Road church on the eastern side of the peninsula on the morning of Monday, November 1. Church staff and locals looked for her for nearly two days before finding her the following afternoon - alive but seriously hurt.

Ursula Almond, who is helping organise the fundraiser, said Pushka's jaw was broken, her eye was hanging out and blood was running from her nose.

Vicar Andrew Doyle said: "We almost gave her up for dead - Angela the church warden found her. Pushka was in a bit of a state when she was

found. She's had to have an eye removed and her jaw wired shut."

The church is Pushka's third home and her third name - she was given the inauspicious name of Covid before, Fr Doyle said.

"She is exceptionally loved by some, tolerated by others," he added. "She has been adopted by the congregation."

The vet's bill came to £2,000. One elderly member of the congregation stumped up £1,000 up front, and Fr Doyle said he would like to pay her back.

"People have been really kind - we're not trying to push the fundraising too much. We're finding a way forward."

This isn't the first scrape Pushka has got into recently - she got stuck on the roof of the church and Fr

Doyle had to climb on the roof in his robes before a service to get her down. Unlike most other cats, Pushka doesn't land on her feet when she falls - she tends to land on her side.

A Peckham hairdresser who helps people sort out their lives as well as their hair is launching a new storytelling programme for women.

Oz Izzet founded Scissors of Oz in 2018. As a hairdresser, she doesn’t just chat to her customers - she discusses their life and uses the way they do their hair as a way to understand what they can do to be happier.

“It’s a place where we channel inner beauty and positivity by crafting and the art of hairdressing,” said Oz to the News.

“We empower people through hair.

“It’s for a conversation with a person about how they want to feel, as opposed to how they want to look. We look at their lifestyle, how they want to feel, what is causing them a problem or an issue in their life.

“We give them something practical and suitable for them as a person.

“We also try not to change the structure of the hair and encourage them to wear it in their natural form. Obviously some people want to feel snazzy and have a change, but we try and encourage natural structure and inner beauty.

“Most of my clients are quite loyal - once someone sits in my chair, nine out of ten times they come back and carry on that journey.

"We’ve gone from people not knowing who they are or what their identity is, to figuring that out. People have come in feeling hopeless, and then a few years down the line they’re the shiniest

and most positive people.

“I’m there to hold their hand and my scissors, and guide them as much as I can.”

Her new storytelling programme, If In Despair Brush Your Hair, involves one-to-one conversations with women where they can have open conversations, establishing their own feel good strategies through discussion and creative writing.

One of these conversations has been recorded and uploaded online with influencer Shahira.

Oz also saw success with the Southwark Business Resilience Awards, in which Scissors of Oz was “Highly Commended” in the Sustainable Green Investment Award.

“Sustainability always been important to me,” said Oz. “We as people do need to change and there’s so much waste. Being sustainable is also a big stamp on consumerism and how we as people hold ourselves back thinking if we can’t afford nice new things we therefore can’t be happy or run our own business.

“But actually reusing things is quite an empowering message. Yes we are helping the environment, but we also want to send that message.

“I used to use normal towels and the energy you use to wash those towels on a regular basis is actually far worse than disposable, plantbased ones which biodegrade.

Now we have them composted.”

Comic success: Maudsley charity dishes out grants A mental health comic producer is among the several Southwark community projects benefitting from a massive £250,000 investment by the Maudsley Charity.

The charity, which supports the work of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust and King’s College London, last week announced over a quarter of a million pounds in funding for ten community mental health projects in Croydon, Lambeth, Lewisham and Southwark.

Some of the community projects use sport to promote the physical and mental wellbeing of South Londoners, while others use the creative arts.

Alice Casey, Director of Programmes at Maudsley Charity said: "At the heart of our decision making was the need to ensure the projects reflect our diverse local communities, so equality and inclusion were essential factors in our deliberations.

“We involved a range of people in selecting projects for funding; including those with lived experience of mental illness, clinicians and academic experts. We believe that this diversity

of experience helps us make better decisions.

“This year we are proud to be able to support a wide range of projects working both in hospital and in the community to assist those experiencing serious mental illness. Sports and arts are well represented and we know people really benefit from these types of activities, as well as some of the more traditional therapeutic approaches.”

One such project helping youth mental health in a unique way is the ‘Creative communities: peer-designed digital comics’ project, based in Southwark and Lambeth.

This project aims to help young people talk about serious mental health issues that would otherwise prove difficult to discuss and prevent.

These include mental health issues like self-harm which are associated with significant stigma, are often hidden by young people, and can prove difficult for individual families, social care, mental health or education services to try to help.

Working with award-winning social issue comics producers, PositiveNegatives, the project will create

accessible digital materials, initially in form of an online comic/zine that explores young people’s experiences of self-harm, recovery stories, positive coping skills and contact details for support services.

This is part of a growing field known as “graphic medicine”, which draws on the growing evidence for the effectiveness of comics as teaching tools for young people - particularly those with lower levels of literacy who may be disenfranchised with the existing curriculum.

The developing team will include young people, clinical psychologists and graphic designers.

Another such project is the Southwark Youth Troupe at Theatre Troupe CIC. This theatre arts project is made for young people who experience acute, severe, and complex mental distress because of trauma.

Each person works with a one-toone mentor, helping them to calm and manage their emotions, and gain confidence and self-esteem. They are all given the chance to take part in all aspects of the theatre as an artistic team.

Comment Our councils are doing a better job on climate change than the government

T

he climate emergency is the single biggest issue we face both nationally and globally.

To prevent the most catastrophic consequences of global warming we must limit the increase to 1.5°. The climate must be at the centre of all of our political and economic decision making, yet the Tory Government are failing to show the leadership we need.

COP26 was a critical opportunity to secure a global agreement on the scale of climate action needed to save our planet.

I attended the conference in its first week and it was inspiring to meet with parliamentarians, experts and activists from across the world working on the solutions needed to prevent climate change.

However, the UK Government’s last minute preparations were always going to risk squandering the precious opportunity we had as the host nation.

There was scant evidence of a concerted diplomatic effort by the UK Government over the past two years to secure the commitment at COP26

MP for Dulwich & West Norwood of the most polluting nations and to give confidence to the countries of the global south that the UK is committed to a just transition.

The Government’s approach to the UK’s own net zero challenge is also falling far short. Publishing a net zero strategy at the last minute before COP26, continuing to permit the exploration of new oilfields in the North sea and a new coalmine in Cumbria, and a budget which hardly mentioned green investment are not the actions of a Government sufficiently committed to climate action. And it was always going to be hard to persuade other countries to make financial contributions to the world’s poorest nations at the same time as making huge cuts to the UK’s own aid budget.

In contrast, our local councils are delivering at pace. I am proud of both Lambeth and Southwark Councils, which were among the first in the country to declare a climate emergency and are both making climate action a top priority.

But they need both additional resources and powers to make the scale of change

that the climate emergency demands, including in relation to the planning system, where tackling the climate emergency must become a core aim.

When I was first elected in 2015, I brought together organisations and individuals in my constituency who care about climate change and we formed an organisation called the Dulwich and West Norwood Climate Coalition. Ahead of COP26, we delivered our letter to the Prime Minister signed by hundreds of local residents and community organisations. We called on him to secure the agreement we desperately need to tackle the climate emergency.

My constituents across Dulwich and West Norwood understand the scale and the gravity of the climate emergency.

The final agreement of COP26 does not go nearly as far as we need, and that is deeply disappointing. I welcome the progress that has been made, but I will continue to campaign with my constituents over the next year for the further action that is still urgently needed to secure the future of our planet for our children and grandchildren.

We must make real changes for women’s safety Evelyn Akoto Southwark Council leader

recently attended a meeting to discuss the endemic issue of violence against women and girls. However, my first thought wasn’t on what questions would be asked of me, but knowing that it would be my first in-person evening meeting for some time.

I started to work out how I would travel home from the office by myself.

I didn’t notice it at first, but I spent a long time thinking about the best route to travel home late at night.

I am sure that most women reading this may recognise this internal safety manual we run through just to carry out simple daily activities like traveling around. Southwark’s recent women safety survey asked women in the borough what situations, if any, made them feel unsafe. Without a doubt, travelling alone at night, especially in dimly lit areas, was a top contender with bus stops and train stations also mentioned.

So, as part of our response we are going to work on improving our public spaces by looking at how we can make the five hotspot areas identified by female residents, safer.

We have also recently launched the Safe Spaces initiative, providing places

in the borough as safe havens for women to seek help and discreetly make a call if they are in danger or experiencing abuse or harassment.

The high profile murders of sisters Nicole Smallman, and Bibaa Henry in June 2020 and more recently Sarah Everard in March 2021 brought the issue of violence against women and girls again into sharp focus. However, this is not a new phenomenon; all around the world women continue to be murdered, raped, or physically and psychologically controlled by men on a daily basis.

One in three women globally will come to some form of harm at the hands of a man. An investigation

by UN Women UK found that 97% of women aged 18-24 have been sexually harassed, with a further 96% not reporting those situations because of the belief that it would not change anything.

This problem is so pervasive that it cannot be called anything other than a global public health crisis of epic proportion. Yet, as women we continue to ‘manage’ the situation the best we can, and like a rite of passage carefully passing on the safety manual down to our daughters.

25th November 2021 will mark the

international day for the elimination of violence against women and girls and will kick-start the 16 days of activism. For me however, this global campaign serves as a reminder that we have not fought hard enough to eliminate gendered base violence.

Women have struggled for equality and against oppression for centuries, but so often solutions continue to focus on the actions that women must take to protect themselves, and away from the perpetrators.

Male violence is not the responsibility of women to fix.

If we are going to have a chance to stop violence against women and girls, men must engage; they must play their part in helping to end this blight. Men must begin examining and challenging attitudes and behaviours - everyday sexism and misogyny that permeate our everyday discourse.

Our ‘Empowering Communities’ conference on 6th December will focus on tackling male violence against women. We will also run a separate men only workshop during the 16 days of action focusing on misogyny, attitudes and behaviours.

Human rights are universal. Women and girls have a right to be safe and we must use all our voices to demand it.

Does Southwark need to put a jumper on and turn the heating down?

Not when half the council houses were built nearly over 70 years ago with old single glazed and old brick works with very poor condensation and insulation. You know these buildings. they are the ones that used to have the toilets in the back garden which no doubt is an old brick storage now.

Housing will be front and centre in elections

M

ore than 50 new council homes were given the green light on Tuesday this week by Southwark Council, across five schemes in Rotherhithe, Bermondsey, Peckham, Walworth and Gipsy Hill.

Many more projects are in the pipeline, with a controversial new block on Slippers Place in Bermondsey set to come before a planning committee next week, having been delayed more than once.

We have reported on the arguments for and against the ‘infilling’ policy adopted by the council on many occasions. Southwark’s cabinet member for council homes, Stephanie Cryan, considers it her “moral duty” to build more flats and eat into the borough’s lengthy waiting list for social housing - in the face of vehement opposition.There are 16,000 people waiting for a council home in Southwark, and many more in temporary accommodation.

The list appears to be growing, having been exacerbated by Covid-19, Cllr Cryan has said. These people are more than numbers on a list - they are human beings who deserve a good, clean, safe home that is the right size for them and their family, just like anyone else.

On the other hand, several of the schemes presented on Tuesday were dogged by accusations of consultation that did not take into account existing residents’ views.

This is a claim that comes up time and again from people living on estates earmarked for infill. Southwark always maintains that the right consultation has been done and Cllr Cryan told us this week that the council is looking to step up its engagement with residents on proposed new schemes.

Perhaps the true reckoning will come in the local elections in May next year: at least to some extent the vote is likely to serve as a referendum on the council’s house building policy.

Grieving Mum: ‘His smile would light up a room’ Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey woman has paid tribute to her "kind and generous" son who died unexpectedly at the age of 37, leaving behind his fiancée and two young daughters.

Christopher Connolly, who grew up near the Blue, tragically died at home early in the morning of November 1 after suffering a heart problem. The coroner is still investigating the cause, his mother Karen said.

He left behind his fiancée Jenny, threeyear-old daughter Nova and six-monthold baby Lyra. Christopher's death was a shock, Karen said, because he had never had major health problems.

Christopher was raised by Karen and his grandmother Connie, Karen told the News. She said that he was much loved by everyone he knew, although his childhood was difficult at times.

"Everyone loved him - his smile would light up a room," she said. "He was a memorable person, and he helped everybody. He was kind and generous.

He had a presence, he was a smart, nice person. He was nice in his life, nice to his friends, nice to everybody. No one has ever had a bad word to say about him as far as I'm concerned.

"He was a Bermondsey boy, he was a cockney," she said. "Pie and mash and liquor - that was him".

Christopher taught summer schools at Bacon's College in Rotherhithe and

helped his mother with security jobs at children's events, she said - which showed off his playful nature.

"I'd turn away for a second and then all of a sudden he would pick up one of those magic thumb [toys], he'd be dancing round with the thumb instead of doing the security. That was what he was like, he lived his life happy."

He went on to do IT contracting at a

National Theatre until the union secured better rights for builders, according to Cllr Wingfield.

He also pushed to get apprenticeships for women and BAME people in the building industry, Cllr Wingfield added, which was much rarer in the 1960s and 1970s.

Mr Skelly became a Labour councillor for the Camberwell Green ward, before moving slightly east to Peckham four years later, and retired from the council in 2002.

As mayor, he met the Queen, Prince Philip and Princess Anne for various events. On one occasion, he greeted the Princess Royal with the words "hello bunny" as she stepped out of her car, according to Sonia Sutton, the mayor's private secretary. Anne is said to have laughed in response.

He also accompanied the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh to the opening of Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, among other events he led as mayor.

"That was just what he was like," Ms Sutton said. "He made everyone feel at ease. He was a lovely, gentle man."

And despite Mr Skelly's "radical" background, he would get on with anyone, Cllr Wingfield, said - including various aristocrats with whom he spent time.

"He had this lyrical Geordie accent," Cllr Wingfield said. "He could always captivate his audience."

Mr Skelly took a keen interest in veterans' affairs and was a fixture at Remembrance events. "He was proud to

wear his father's medals from the First World War," Ms Sutton said. He was also a member of a wide range of community groups, including the Mayor’s Common Good Trust, Camberwell Consolidated Charities, Southwark Pensioners, Southwark Young Pilgrims and The Soviet Memorial Trust.

Mr Skelly's funeral took place earlier this month in Newcastle, where many family members still live. There will be a remembrance service at St George's Cathedral on Lambeth Road on Thursday, November 25 at 3pm. Guests are asked to be seated by 2.50pm.

Mr Skelly is survived by his partner, who was by his side for the past 30 years.

Christopher met his fiancee Jenny and bought a house in Chadwell Heath, in east London. Their dream eventually was to move to America or Canada, Karen said - but she added that he never forgot his Bermondsey home.

"He learned to drive so he could come and get me to east London from south London, so it wouldn't cost me money.

That was the kind of man he was."

Unfortunately there were some expensive problems with the east London house that, along with work, Karen says may have caused her son a lot of stress.

She said that she last spoke to him at 11.20 on October 31, less than five hours before he died. When Jenny called to tell her the tragic news, she could not believe it at first.

"I’m still in shock, it’s like someone’s going to wake me up and say it's not real," she said.

His body is now with F.A. Albin's and Karen paid tribute to the "amazing" local funeral home. "The respect and dignity they give the dead is wonderful," she said.

The funeral, in early December, will be a small event for family and close friends only, but Karen asked anyone who wants to sign the condolences book to get in touch with Albin's on 020 7237 3637 or email info@albins.co.uk Unfortunately, Christopher was still paying off the mortgage on his house and there were various other financial concerns. This is set to be a difficult time for the young family without their partner and father, Karen said.

Karen asked people not to send flowers to the funeral but to give a donation instead.

"There’s Christmas coming up, and there's his children facing life without a father. His fiancée Jenny is going to be facing life without a partner."

Karen also begged people to have regular check-ups to avoid dying suddenly like Christopher. "My son was healthy, he went to a gym in his corporate offices. He never smoked, he never drank, he never took drugs. It's not fair at all. Your children aren’t supposed to go before you."

Thousands expected as memorial Service returns

A former Southwark Mayor, trade unionist, and film set decorator whom friends and former colleagues described as "radical and innovative" but also "serene and peaceful" has died aged 89.

William 'Bill' Skelly, who was Mayor of Southwark from 1997-1998, died on October 12 after a short illness. His friend and former colleague Ian Wingfield, a Labour councillor for the St Giles ward in Camberwell, called Mr Skelly "the perfect role model for a mayor", which is an important but ceremonial role.

"He was a lovely man," said Cllr Wingfield. "He had a warm, engaging personality. He knew how to speak to everyone, no matter what background they came from."

Mr Skelly was born in Newcastle as the youngest of eleven children. He was a talented painter as a boy, and when he left school he became an apprentice decorator. He practised sign writing and graining every night when he got home.

He did his National Service in the army aged eighteen and moved to London in his late twenties, where he gained work on film sets as a decorator. Cllr Wingfield said that Mr Skelly was employed to paint set furniture to make it look more expensive or impressive than it really was - an important skill in a time of lower production budgets.

Perhaps the best-known production Mr Skelly worked on was the 1968 war film Where Eagles Dare, starring Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. He got to know famous actors like Burton and his sometime-wife Elizabeth Taylor, as well as Michael Caine.

When Rotherhithe-born Caine was given the freedom of Southwark in 2012, Mr Skelly was in the audience - and the Italian Job star "made a beeline" for him, Cllr Wingfield said, as he recognised him from film work.

Albin’s was at the forefront of live streaming services as the COVID pandemic hit and while they are delighted to get the crowds back to their memorial garden on the edge of Southwark Park, they will continue to have a live streaming option available for those that cannot attend.

All of the usual much-loved parts of the service including carols, video displays of a military tribute, the release of doves and prayers from members of the local clergy will return on Wednesday, December 1.

The gates will open at 6pm for a 7pm start..

People are now invited to write personal messages that will then be hung on a massive Christmas Tree in the garden. This will be included in the service. You can visit the memorial garden at 52 Culling Road, Rotherhithe, London, SE16 2TN from now until the service to write your message. And if you cannot get to the garden email your message to stars@ albins.co.uk. There is a maximum of twenty words.

This is the 22st annual memorial service, which was established by the late Barry Albin-Dyer after getting the garden built in 1999 and has twice played host the Princess Royal.

It’s time once again for one of the art world’s greatest open exhibitions, where the great and the good and the determined all come together for this annual celebration of visual art, writes Michael Holland...

Over 200 pieces were submitted and over 200 pieces are on display. No one gets disappointed at the Southwark Park Galleries because all artists are welcome to show their art in this ‘large-scale, democratic salon show’; this is a real Open show, not like other Opens where, if your art don’t fit you don’t get in…

At this, the 37th Annual Open, you can see drawing, photography, print, sculpture, mosaic, videos, and, of course, paintings in oils, watercolours and acrylics. There are artworks created from found objects and a selfportrait formed of dog hair and a pipe!

With art, the general visitor will not like everything, but in this exhibition there will always be something for everyone. Amongst my favourites were a cube of felt with a badge saying what it would like to do to the Government; a portrait of Bertha II formed of found objects that showed both feelings for Bertha and a love for the planet by recycling discarded bits and pieces; HaHa, a concrete and laughing gas bulbs creation depicting how the druggies must look after they’ve sucked a few of the bulbs; and The Job Interview, a very disturbing painting that absolutely nailed the dynamic of fear and power in those situations.

I entered the Imperial War Museum with a strong feeling of trepidation. There seemed to be a hushed peacefulness throughout the building, perhaps, reverence.

People tried to tread quietly on the stone floors, heads were semibowed. And this is as it should be for the opening of the Holocaust Galleries project, writes Michael Holland...

Over £30m has been spent on bringing together over 2,000 items and personal stories from more than 80 countries to create a global narrative of arguably the worst period of the 20th century.

The journey takes you from post-WWI Germany through to the post-WWII diaspora of the European Jews.

The Holocaust Galleries contains artefacts never seen before and displays once-banned photos of Nazi execution squads. It has taken six years to put together with a mission to preserve stories of survivors to ensure the world

never forgets the evil that man can do.

This is a very important exhibition and is no less significant now that people with a living memory of those years are becoming fewer all the time.

I have been to see Auschwitz and I will never forget the feeling I left there with. I had that same feeling as I left the Holocaust Galleries.

With antisemitism still around, and the rise of the Far Right it is vital that young people see this and learn from it, because they will be the leaders and decision makers for the next generation.

This was the stage for The Shark Is Broken, written by Ian Shaw and Joseph Nixon, and tells of the long days the three main actors in the Spielberg blockbuster spent sitting about waiting for the fake shark to be fixed so they could commence filming.

Ian Shaw is the son of Robert Shaw and the play is based on his father’s diaries from the time he played Quint, the shark hunter. Ian also plays his father, adding another layer of authenticity to this insight into how strangers cope and pass the time in difficult circumstances.

As the lights go down John Williams’ classic piece of suspense music, synonymous with approaching danger, starts up and all those feelings of impending terror that we felt in cinemas all those years ago came flooding back.

We quickly get a feel for the characters: Roy Scheider (Demetri Goritsas) is the pensive, thoughtful one who likes to keep up on the news and impart interesting facts. Richard Dreyfuss (Liam Murray Scott) is the young, relative newcomer to the industry whose anxiety makes him talk a lot, much to the annoyance of veteran film star Robert Shaw, the harddrinking man who is constantly at odds with Dreyfuss, while Scheider finds himself stuck in the middle as arbiter.

There is a continuous feeling of tension as they fill the days doing nothing except play cards, board games and talk. They get on each other’s nerves, they grate on each other, they feel Jaws will not be successful, which doesn’t help matters, and there is the added problems of Shaw’s drinking and Dreyfuss taking drugs, which leads to arguments and manhandling.

We also see how they manage to get on for the sake of the film, the good times they had, their personal fears and anxieties, their hopes for the future and how they slowly came to respect each other’s work and became friends. There is sadness, poignancy and comedy on the journey they make together, and with the luxury of hindsight the writers have been able to make jokes to fit a contemporary audience.

The Shark Is Broken elicited a collective and deserved standing ovation. We were in the Jaws of a great play.

Nehemiah Khan, Soda-pop Smith, Kalen Castello, Malaki Calliste, Tyrell Harris-Wallace and Michele Fotso, along with their coaches Levent Charles and Louise Mearns, all placed third on the podium.

“I am so proud of these young men,” Charles said. “This was their first competition in two years due to the pandemic and we’ve worked extremely hard on their physical and mental wellbeing since returning from lockdown.

“I think it’s important to highlight the fact that although one gymnast had a fall during a performance, these young kings remained positive, focused and driven for the final run.

“It’s an achievement in itself to get back up and perform the final run to the best of their abilities after a knock-back, but they still pushed through and made top three in the country.

“My job is not all about medals and trophies, it’s about teaching life lessons through sport that they can carry through life.

“Well done, champs – never give up.”

Meanwhile, along with their training, five of the six gymnasts – who are all aged between fourteen and sixteen – have also become

qualified gymnastics coaches.

They are currently working with their gymnasts to create the next generation of British champions.

Southwark Gymnastics Club currently has 876 members of the community actively taking part in various classes on a weekly basis

at their three venues in Southwark: Brunswick Park Primary School, Charles Dickens Primary School and Camberwell Leisure Centre.

They have plans to expand to other venues to create more gymnastics spaces and job opportunities for members of the community.

Southwark Aquatics make splash at Surrey event One young competitor is on Swim England talent pathway

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTHWARK AQUATICS Swimming Club had two competitors at the 2021 Surrey County Championships with one medallist invited to join a prestigious development programme.

The club is back to regular training after the lockdowns and open for new members. Last summer, with sport restricted, SASC ran a morale-boosting in-house club championships. But swimmers are now training for several upcoming swim galas as the calendar slowly returns to normal.

The Club Championships resulted in two of their swimmers qualifying for the Surrey event.

Niko Kosovic went on to win a gold medal, bronze medal, and finish fourth in three other events. Callie Warrington’s best performance was a fourth-place finish.

Niko has subsequently been invited to join a county development programme which is the first phase on the Swim England talent pathway. He is one of only eighteen eleven-year-old boys selected in the county.

A club spokesperson said: “These are great achievements for a small club, and prove our heady ambitions are not unfounded.”

Meanwhile, SASC awarded two of their swimmers, Noah Lansing and Michael Samokhvalov, a Jack Petchey Achievement Award for their outstanding efforts both in training and outside of the club during the pandemic. The club said, “These young men are role models to their peers and worthy award winners”.

The club previously told the News that they had worked hard during the lockdowns to ensure their swimmers had the supports they needed in the absence of training and competitions.

They continue to be ambitious as they aim to expand and attract more people to the sport.

SASC added: “Southwark Aquatics is focused on growing its membership.

Sport and leisure are key to the wellbeing of everyone and Southwark Aquatics is striving to be inclusive to all who love swimming.

“The disruption of the pandemic has been tough but the club has survived and is keen to move forward working with the local community to offer reasonably-priced competitive swimming in a warm, friendly environment. Southwark Aquatics has places for new swimmers at all levels from Academy to Master.

“Additionally, as we strive to ensure we are accessible to all, we are seeking sponsors to allow us to pursue our desire to set up a para-swimming squad. If you are able to help, please contact us.”

FA Cup heartbreak for Lionesses

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES suffered FA Cup heartbreak as AFC Wimbledon scored two late goals at St Paul’s last weekend to progress to the second round.

Millwall had won seven consecutive games – five of them under new boss Jack Wheeler – but the run was ended by a side in the fourth tier, one above the Lionesses.

The Dons were kept at bay until the 80th minute when Katie Stanley made the breakthrough.

The visitors sealed their win in the last minute when substitute Emily Donovan finished a cross from Rebecca Carter.

The visitors dominated from the start and had fifteen shots in the first half but couldn’t find a way past Lionesses goalkeeper Chrissie Wiggins.

After Wiggins had made a number of early saves, the Lionesses had their first chance through Maisie Joyce. It was from a long-range free-kick that seemed to initially deceive Lauren Allen with an awkward bounce, but the goalkeeper recovered to save for a corner.

Ex-Lionesses striker Ashlee Hincks was a constant threat for the Dons but Millwall stayed compact as they tried to limit attempts to trouble Wiggins.

Wheeler’s side improved after the break but the visitors still possessed plenty of threats and thought they had taken the lead with thirteen minutes left but Wiggins produced a brilliant save to tip a shot onto the bar and the Dons couldn’t find the net after the ball had bounced back into play.

But that was only a temporary reprieve for Millwall as Stanley finally beat Wiggins when she fired home.

Millwall responded as they tried to press their opponents back but they couldn’t find a way through and the away side added a second through Donovan.

Wheeler acknowledged his side’s efforts in their resilient display. He said: “Very proud of this group of players and staff over the last five weeks. “[Sunday’s] performance shows how far we have come in such a short space of time. But credit goes to an excellent AFC Wimbledon Ladies team.

Ibrahim then went close to further reducing the deficit but his effort hit the post.

And Fisher only had themselves to blame for their squandered chances and a nervy finish as Ryan Young made it 3-2 with twelve minutes left.

Fisher pressed forward and Malaki Croker and Harry Main missed opportunities to ensure a more comfortable last ten minutes.

Carpanini helped Fisher take all three points late on with a save in a crowded penalty area.

The result leaves Fisher in thirteenth place in the table. Ashanike’s side host Bearsted at St Paul’s this Saturday. Kickoff in Rotherhithe is 3pm.

The recalled Udo struck twice and Joseph Adewunmi got another as Ajay Ashanike’s Fish claimed three points.

Fisher went in front in the ninth minute when Morgan Seaman found Udo with a through-ball and he crashed his effort in off the far post.

The Fish really turned the screw just before half-time. First, Courtney Swaby curled in a corner that Adewunmi headed home in the 44th minute.

It was 3-0 a minute later when after a succession of corners Temi Oladejo crossed for Udo to grab his second.

Swaby then set up Udo who almost completed his hat-trick but his shot was saved.

Stans’ late flurry sees off new boys Westside

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD TRAVELLED to south-west London last weekend and made it back-to-back away wins at SCEFL First Division new boys Westside FC.

After winning at Sutton Athletic the previous weekend to bounce back from their first league defeat of the season, the Stans raced into the lead in the third minute through Rob Hughes.

But they couldn’t add to that advantage and were pegged back in the 66th minute as Ayman Dahdouh levelled for the hosts.

However, Stansfeld went up another gear and just six minutes later Casey Killilea restored the lead.

And the Stans were home and dry ten minutes from time when Jack Carthy made it 3-1.

Killilea was involved in the opener when his shot found its way to Hughes in the six-yard box and he reacted to finish smartly.

Stansfeld should have doubled their

lead but Ollie Milton headed over the crossbar from six yards.

The visitors soon went closer as Dan Parkinson pulled a free-kick back to Joe Minter whose strike from 20 yards rebounded off the post and into the grateful arms of the goalkeeper.

The home side did look a threat on the break even if they rarely troubled the away goal. Milton had another opportunity to make it 2-0 before the break but again couldn’t keep his header down.

Stansfeld lost goal-scorer Hughes after a nasty clash of heads early in the second half, with Carthy coming on.

Westside then put together their best move of the game and Dahdouh brought them level when he fired a lot shot into the corner giving goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell no chance.

Stansfeld’s second goal came via a set-piece, as Red Jenkins delivered a free-kick onto the head of captain Killilea who found the bottom corner.

And the Stans wrapped up the three points in the 80th minute when

Milton found Sam Smith out wide and he crossed for Carthy to add the third.

Stansfeld have a five-point lead over second-place Tooting Bec at the top of the table as they break from league action to face Badshot Lea in the FA Vase second round this Sunday.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld Reserves got back to winning ways with a fine 3-0 victory away at Crockenhill.

Stansfeld 3rds made it back-toback wins with a 4-1 victory away at Dulwich Village.

But Stansfeld 4ths went down to their first league defeat of the season losing 3-0 at home to Red Velvet.

Forde not bitter over testimonial

Goalkeeper made more than 300 appearances in nine years at the club

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FORMER MILLWALL goalkeeper David Forde says he has no bitterness over not getting a testimonial after almost a decade at the club.

Forde, 41, signed for the Lions on a free transfer from Cardiff City in the summer of 2008 and had eight full seasons at The Den before leaving for Portsmouth on loan in 2016.

He returned to Millwall after being an ever-present to help Pompey win the League Two title, but was released by his former team-mate Neil Harris in the summer of 2017, nine years and 339 appearances after joining.

Jimmy Abdou signed for Millwall from Plymouth in the same summer as Forde and left a year later – after a season’s

loan at AFC Wimbledon – after 342 appearances. Abdou had his testimonial in 2018.

Forde was asked recently on Millwall’s podcast, Wall Talk, if he was “gutted” not to be given a traditional send-off.

“I wouldn’t say I was gutted because the nine years I had here was a phenomenal adventure and a serious journey,” Forde said.

“You could look at it and get bitter but one of my mottos and a philosophy I operate by is, ‘you either do bitter or you get better’.

“For me, you could look at it in the sense as that can finalise a relationship and a journey, so it’s still open.

“How I view that is there could still be chapters to be written. Lets’ see, who knows? Let nature decide.

“If I were to play a team, who would that be? An Irish select team would be nice. Or as a Liverpool fan it would have

been amazing to play Liverpool.”

Forde played in two League One playoff finals, winning the second 1-0 against Swindon in 2010.

He featured prominently in Michael Calvin’s book Family: Life, Death and Football: a Year on the Frontline with a Proper Club.

Calvin called Millwall’s core group of players ‘Guvnors’ and Forde explained the life lessons he learned in his time at the club.

“In all the teams in all the years it was a very special time and a very unique time,” Forde said. “Players go through their whole careers wandering from club to club so to have that type of experience and to come into that space, I bought into it wholeheartedly.

“I always felt there was something there [bringing him] towards Millwall.

So when I came we had that going, as [Calvin] says, the ‘Guvnors’, we were

really tight-knit, like a band of brothers.

“We’d always say things but it wouldn’t be taken personally. We’d take it on board and talk about it afterwards, whether it was right, wrong or indifferent.

“We had a dream and an ambition to get promoted and we did that.

“It taught me huge lessons about team dynamics and leadership. You see it with the likes of the All Blacks and different super teams that have performed well down through the years. It’s all managed within the group with the support coming externally, say from a manager.

“We had that right: ‘These are the non-negotiables’. And if you break these down it’s not just the manager of the club it’s the core group that are going to manage that.

“It made it easier at that time because you had people with the same intentions and ambitions, that wanted to get ahead and achieve. And they’re coming with a

history and a heritage behind them with the likes of Neil Harris, Paul Robinson, Alan Dunne, Gary Alexander is a Millwall fan.

“So they knew what the club was about, they knew what the culture and heritage was about. That was massive, to instil that.

“I think over the years where I struggled with Millwall teams was losing people in that space. Steve Morison bought into it, Tony Craig another one as well. Jimmy Abdou bought into it.

“These were all massive influencers within a high-performance environment. It was massive for that.

“That’s where clubs that want to evolve and increase the so-called better players, it doesn’t mean they are better people.

“It’s whether you want better players or better people. I’d rather have better people all day long.”

Striker nets winner – as attacker experiences ‘Hollywood’ treatment

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ISAAC OLAOFE scored the winning goal as Sutton United defeated Tranmere Rovers 1-0 at Prenton Park last Saturday.

Olaofe dispossessed Peter Clarke before firing into the far corner via a deflection in the 71st minute.

It was Olaofe’s fourth goal in ten appearances this season and lifts Sutton up to eighth in the League Two table.

Michael Gray’s U’s are away at Leyton Orient on Saturday.

Kenny Jackett’s Orient drew 2-2 at Rochdale at the weekend and are two points behind Sutton.

Alex Newby scored in the first and 90th minutes for Dale, either side of Aaron Drinan and Craig Clay goals in

either half.

Alex Mitchell played the full game on the right side of Orient’s back three and is still unbeaten in twelve games since he joined on loan in August.

In League One, Mahlon Romeo played right-back as Portsmouth continued their recent revival with a 1-0 win against Wycombe Wanderers at Adams Park.

Marcus Harness scored the only goal in the 73rd minute to give Pompey their first away win since the opening day and move them into the top half four points off the playoffs.

Portsmouth play AFC Wimbledon at Fratton Park on Saturday.

In National League, Dover Athletic are fourteen games without a win this season after their 2-1 defeat

away at Torquay United.

Junior Tiensia played the full game at left-back as Armani Little scored a last-minute winner for the hosts to add to his 34th-minute leveller following Travis Gregory’s fourthminute opener.

Dover have drawn three games this season and are on minus-nine points. Andy Hessenthaler’s side host Halifax Town on Saturday.

Also in the fifth tier, Dan Moss again went close to his first goal in senior football in Yeovil Town’s 2-1 win against Eastleigh at Huish Park.

Moss had a shot blocked before Tom Knowles gave the Glovers the lead before half-time.

Harry Pritchard levelled the scores in the 68th minute but Adi Yussuf restored the home side’s advantage eight minutes later when he finished

Joe Quigley’s flick-on.

Yeovil are thirteenth in the table and visit seventh-place Dagenham & Redbridge this Saturday.

Lions attacker Jayden Davis got his first taste of ‘Hollywood’ when he came on in the 58th minute for King’s Lynn Town at home to Wrexham.

But it wasn’t a happy ending as the hosts were beaten 6-2 by the club owned by American actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

Michael Clunan put King’s Lynn ahead but Aaron Hayden levelled before Jordan Davies, Paul Mullin and Jordan Ponticelli scored to make it 4-1.

Malachi Linton pulled one back but Dan Jarvis and Cameron Green added two more goals to help Wrexham to back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

King’s Lynn dropped to 22nd in the table on eight points after a fifth consecutive defeat and travel to Bromley on Saturday.

There were positive results for two Lions youngsters in National League South.

Defender Arthur Penney – playing in a back three – got an assist when he found Bradley Stevenson who scored the only goal for Welling United at home to Tonbridge Angels.

The result moved Welling up to thirteenth and they travel to thirdplace Ebbsfleet United on Saturday.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Ryan Sandford made a number of good saves to keep a clean sheet in Maidstone United’s 0-0 draw at Havant & Waterlooville.

Maidstone host Chippenham Town this Saturday.

rowett unconcerned by World Cup break

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE START of the 2022-23 EFL season has been confirmed for July and Championship clubs will have a month’s break as the schedule is adjusted with the 2022 World Cup in Qatar taking place next winter.

The Championship, League One and League Two will kick off on Saturday, July 30, with Millwall boss Gary Rowett quipping he hopes to have the “problem” of being in the play-offs at the end of this season.

The World Cup is over a fiveweek period in November and December 2022. Round sixteen of the Championship, set to take place on Saturday, November 12, will be the final round of fixtures played ahead of the call-up period for the tournament, which begins on Monday, November 14.

The Championship will kick off again on December 10, 2022 following the end of the group stages of the tournament and the first knockout round. League One and League Two fixtures will continue as normal with the existing international calls postponement criteria applying where necessary.

The Premier League will recommence on Boxing Day. The EFL Cup is set to start the week commencing August 8, with the final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, February 26.

The final day of the 2022-23 season in the Championship, League One and League Two will be across the weekend of Saturday, May 6, 2023, with the EFL playoff finals scheduled for the Bank Holiday weekend of May 27-29, 2023.

Clubs have had consecutive disrupted seasons due to Covid-19 restrictions. The 2019-20 Championship campaign didn’t end until July 22 after the first lockdown saw fixtures suspended for more than three months.

The 2022-23 season will begin in July and pause for a month to accommodate the Qatar tournament preparations after a shorter break for players. That campaign’s schedule was packed into a truncated season with Euro 2020 taking place in the summer of 2021.

Rowett doesn’t feel too inconvenienced by the earlier start to the next campaign or the break in fixtures, which he believes will allow his players to have a mid-season breather. The only way Millwall will have players involved in the tournament is if they sign them in January or in next

summer’s transfer window.

The Lions are currently poised just outside the top six and Rowett has said he expects a play-off challenge. If Millwall finish in the top six in the second tier for the first time since 2002 and go on to reach the Championship play-off final for the first time in their history, then they will have to adjust their summer plans.

But that wouldn’t be an issue for Rowett as he was asked about the break in fixtures

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THERE IS set to be a familiar face in the opposition dugout when Cardiff City visit The Den in February – after Steve Morison was confirmed as the Bluebirds’ manger until the end of the season.

Former Millwall captain Morison had been in charge on a caretaker basis after replacing the sacked Mick McCarthy. In his first game, Cardiff came back from three goals down to draw 3-3 at Stoke City, ending a run of eight straight defeats.

Tom Ramasut will be Morison’s assistant and former Cardiff captain Mark Hudson has joined as first-team coach.

“It’s great. I’ve had a little taste of it,” Morison said in an interview on Cardiff’s website. “I really enjoyed the three games. I put my name forward and said that if they’d like me to continue, I’d be really happy and excited to be given the opportunity.

“The players have been excellent since day one, and since we were asked to look after the team. They’ve taken everything on board and I think you can see that in the performances. We changed the style a little bit and I think you could really see that on the pitch.

Lions players will get a mid-season breather and earlier start next season.

“It poses a slight issue in that you’re probably going to get a week less break,” Rowett said. “But I think it only truly causes any team a problem if they’re involved in the play-offs, essentially.

“It would be nice if it does cause us some problems, it would be a problem I’d like to have, along with a lot of other clubs.

“But if you look at the last couple of summers they have been affected by Covid “The most exciting thing is that we’ve got the opportunity to progress that now and hopefully we’ll get better and better.”

Cardiff lost Morison’s second game 1-0 at home to QPR before the Welsh side came from behind to beat Huddersfield with an injury-time winner from Kieffer Moore before the international break.

Cardiff are three points above the relegation zone.

Morison added: “The noise when that winning goal went in on Saturday was incredible. That’s what you live for. My reaction on the side-lines was just a pure and natural reaction to that moment.

“First and foremost, let’s get ourselves out of trouble. Let’s get ourselves away from that pack around the bottom and get Cardiff City back to where it should be.”

Cardiff owner Vincent Tan explained the appointment.

“I have been encouraged by the team’s improved performances over the past three games, with the adoption of a more attractive and progressive style of football,” Tan said.

“What’s more, I think that the excellent work done by Steve and Tom at under-23 level this season puts them in the very best position to help develop a talented crop of young players emerging at senior

anyway, so we’re kind of used to disruption a little bit.

“It will be strange, I believe we’re going to get two or three weeks without a game in winter. It will be an opportunity to give that week back to the players and have a mid-season break almost.

“It will be interesting to see how it works.

It’s going to be a little bit unconventional, to say the least, but I’m sure clubs will adapt.” level.

Morison played most of his football at Millwall under Neil Harris – who McCarthy replaced at Cardiff – and Kenny Jackett.

Morison was asked by the News in March 2018 what kind of manager he reckoned he would be.

“I’m definitely not as intense as Neil,” he said. “Kenny had his way of doing things and you take snippets from everyone.

Ultimately what you can’t do is try and mimic someone.

“You can look at things and say, ‘I would have dealt with that differently’, or, ‘that’s a really good way of dealing with that’.

You keep them in your back pocket for whenever you come across those situations.

“I’m a different character, I’m quiet calm and relaxed, contrary to beliefs. But I’m very attentive and very into attention to detail, making sure things are done right.

Hence why I get the hump so quickly when things aren’t done properly. I see the bigger picture.

“As and when I start my coaching career I’ll use those snippets.”

Boro appointed Chris Wilder as Neil Warnock’s successor on Teesside last week.

Wilder’s Sheffield United side were renowned for their high-energy, attacking play, and he will have had ten days to get his ideas across to his new squad.

Gary Rowett has already faced one manager this season in his first game in his new job, when Millwall travelled to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest in September.

Forest had lost all four home league games under Chris Hughton, but Steve Cooper stopped that run as his side drew 1-1.

Forest were clearly much more energised than they had been under Hughton but there is an argument that it’s better to play a team with a new manager in their first game than a few games in – Cooper led the side to four consecutive league wins after the draw against the Lions.

The sports website The Athletic recently examined the theory of the ‘new manager bounce’ and former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha agreed with the above suggestion.

He said: “I always felt, apart from the increased energy, it’d take a few games

for the new manager to really get his message across, so the first game isn’t as bad as you’d think.”

Some managers go to extremes when they are preparing for a team with a new boss.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL FANS have so far helped raise a record-breaking £19,318.92 for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal during the period of Remembrance.

Donations of £11,116.99 were raised on the day of the Derby County fixture at The Den through bucket collections, and poppy and badge sales. More than £8,000 has been generated from the club’s range of related merchandise.

Additional money is being raised from the auction of match-worn shirts from the club’s Remembrance fixtures. That figure is currently over

£5,000 but the auctions are still live and will be until Sunday, November 28.

Millwal said: “The club would like to pay tribute to Millwall supporters for once again showcasing their extraordinary generosity. These sums are incredible and everyone connected with the club couldn’t be prouder of what fans have achieved during this year’s campaign. Thank you.

“This all wouldn’t have been possible without the outstanding efforts of Lions fan Mel Bingham, who co-ordinates the fundraising year after year and who has excelled herself once more. As well, the club is immensely grateful to Micky Simpson

The other managerial switch was at Barnsley, albeit Joseph Laumann is still the caretaker. But in their first match under him the Tykes won for the first time in fourteen matches, 2-1 at home to Derby.

Lions players won’t need to be told to get ready for a newly-energised Boro, particularly given they have the memories of their 3-0 defeat at The Riverside last season when they conceded three times in the first 20 minutes.

But they should be confident going to the north-east after just two defeats in their last thirteen league games. Rowett’s side have won five of their last eight games to move from nineteenth and seven points off sixth after that draw against Forest to ninth and one point outside the play-offs.

Rowett could have a full squad to choose from for the first time this season. Murray Wallace and George Evans are expected to train this week but remain doubts.

Defender Daniel Ballard had an injection in his knee early last week and it was agreed he wouldn’t go away on international duty with Northern Ireland, who couldn’t qualify for the World Cup with two games left in Group C of European qualifying.

George Saville played in the 1-0 win over Lithuania last Friday and the 0-0 draw against Italy on Monday before returning to Calmont Road to join preparations for the clash against Boro.

Mac has to go on attack to take chance EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett insists Danny McNamara will get his firstteam opportunity again – and urged the defender to take the chance when it comes.

McNamara, 22, had been first-choice right wing-back since his return from his loan spell at St Johnstone last January.

The Republic of Ireland under-21 defender took Mahlon Romeo’s regular spot in the team. Romeo had been first choice since 2015-16 but such was McNamara’s impact that the former

decided to leave on loan in the summer and joined Portsmouth.

But McNamara has recently lost his place in the side, with Rowett preferring Ryan Leonard on the right side of a back five or back four.

Rowett wants McNamara to add assists and goals to his game. McNamara has scored three goals in senior football, one each for Dover Athletic, Havant & Waterlooville and St Johnstone.

But he has yet to open his Millwall account in 26 games.

Millwall’s left wing-back Scott Malone, has scored eight goals in 59 games since the start of the 2020-21 season.

Rowett says it’s natural for a young player to experience time out of the team.

“Danny works really hard, he’s a great character. He does loads of extra work with the coaches, the likes of Adam [Barrett] and Robbo [Paul Robinson].

“And like I said before, he’ll get back into the team and when he does he’ll have that opportunity to keep the shirt.”

“It’s like any player that for whatever reason is not in the team, in the starting line-up, it’s about trying to improve their game and making sure when they do get their opportunity that they do what they have to do,” Rowett said.

“Certainly in those wing-back positions it’s important in a team like ours that they add to the attacking numbers. That they create assists, that they get goals.

“We’ve spoken about it before, Danny’s like Billy [Mitchell] who was out of the team last season, start of this season while Danny was in the team performing really, really well. It’s part of being a young player.

“I’m sure if we were a team sat in 20th sometimes a player would play every minute. But we’re not, we’re pushing hard

The Lions are likely to target at least a forward in the next transfer window.

While Benik Afobe, Matt Smith and Tom Bradshaw have made important contributions, they have only scored seven goals between them this season.

The Lions are aware that they are still heavily reliant on Jed Wallace, who has five goals and five assists and is on course again to notch double figures in both in consecutive seasons.

Any injury to Wallace would deprive the Lions of their main attacking threat, and take away the team’s paciest forward.

Another option up front, Mason Bennett, has shown how effective he can be in a central position – he scored five goals in the second half of last season – but injuries have restricted him to just seven appearances this campaign.

A report has linked Millwall with a move for Tottenham’s former Leeds player Jack Clarke, though he primarily plays as a winger.

The Lions will again try to move on players such as Ben Thompson and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson to free up some cash.

“The reasonable expectation is a couple of players might need to move on but that was the expectation also in

the last window. It just didn’t happen,” Rowett said.

“I’ll do what I always do, I’ll highlight the areas I think we need to improve in and then the club have a decision to make whether we can do that financially.

“We have worked really hard to try and find solutions for both the club and the team to improve.

“It’s as simple as that, really. The club always look to do sensible business and I don’t see that being any different in January.”

Meanwhile, Billy Mitchell is set to be the main doubt for the trip to Middlesbrough this weekend after pulling out of training on Monday with a groin problem.

But if he is passed fit then Rowett could have a full match-day squad for the first time this season.

“It’s important to a team like ours,” Rowett said. “What it’s going to do is make it really difficult to pick a squad of eighteen because I genuinely think we’ve got a squad of about 22 players who could all play and all have an argument to say why they should play.

“That’s what we want. There are going to be players disappointed from time to time but the whole idea is that the team is better for it and the options are better on match-day.

“Obviously a full squad is a bit of a luxury to have, you wouldn’t expect to have it all the time. Hence the depth that’s required.

“It’s going to make it interesting over the next few games but certainly we’ll have some different options to pick the right team for the right games.”
