MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes is worried that the government is “squandering” its opportunity to achieve the “strongest possible agreement” with other nations in the global climate conference ongoing in Glasgow.

The petition, signed by constituents in Dulwich and West Norwood, includes demands for agreement to honour previous commitments to provide less-wealthy countries with £100 billion a year to support a just transition to carbon neutrality, a commitment to fund low cost and sustainable public transport across the UK and a programme to retrofit housing and buildings across the country.

Coyle told the committee debating the bill that this "requires people to watch other people die" - making it "deeply unBritish" and un-Christian.

Describing the people of Southwark, he added: "We do not whine about our Christian commitment and moral duty to the people we are supporting. We do not mind our international obligations being upheld. We are proud to be supportive of those in need.

"It is extraordinary that the Bill, and this clause in particular, seeks to make UK citizens bad Samaritans. Without my amendment, the clause requires turning a blind eye. It requires people to watch other people die. It is a sickening extension of the culture war. It is in breach of our international obligations and law.

"The proposed changes risk UK-flagged vessels being pushed into a Kafkaesque Catch-22: assist those in distress and risk criminal liability or do not assist, breach duties of international law and

witness the deaths of other people.

This risks criminalising voluntary assistance while failing to provide for a humanitarian exemption.

"My amendment presses the Government for such an exemption, along the lines that the Minister outlined and says that he wants. Not least, it would honour our international commitments and protect the RNLI and its amazing work across our country."

Coyle's amendment was voted down but Tom Pursglove, a junior minister at the Home Office said in response that the government would insert its own changes to the bill later on.

Nigel Farage accused the RNLI earlier this year of being a taxi service for illegal immigration. In response the RNLI said: "Our charity exists to save lives at sea.

Our mission is to save every one. Our lifesavers are compelled to help those in need without judgement of how they came to be in the water. They have done so since the RNLI was founded in 1824 and this will always be our ethos.”

IS ENERGY FIRM CORRECT TO SAY SOUTHWARK’S HOMES ARE TOO HOT?

charles@southwarknews.co.uk An energy company that tries to reduce how much energy people use is calling on Southwark, along with the rest of the UK, to put a jumper on to fight the climate crisis and save money.

Utilita Energy has unveiled national stats which, adjusted for Southwark, claim that just under 50 per cent of all homes in Southwark are heated to the same average temperature as Barbados. The figures are likely to raise eyebrows on estates such as the Aylesbury, which are plagued by faulty boilers and condemned to freezing winters.

Their new consumer behaviour change campaign, called “Wear Warm”, is calling on 13 million UK households - 82,000 of which are in Southwark - not to heat their homes any higher than 21 degrees and consider other ways to keep warm instead.

Secondhand shop chain TRAID has also signed up its twelve charity shops - one of which is in Peckham to participate in the campaign.

Maria Chenoweth, CEO of TRAID, said: “When your home starts to feel the chill, reach for your wardrobe – and your local charity shop –

instead of turning up the heat.”

The benefits of turning down the thermostat are, claim Utilita, two fold. Firstly, the carbon emissions from heating our homes to this temperature much is significant especially given the climate crisis currently being discussed in Glasgow for COP26.

In Southwark’s 82,000 households, just under 50 per cent heat their homes to more than the recommended healthy heat of 1821 degrees, which creates the same pollution as a car travelling 67 million miles.

lead, Archie Lasseter, stated that if every household made a pledge to stay within 18-21 degrees, the UK would hit its net zero obligation almost two years ahead of its deadline.

The company also state that average annual saving for homes reducing their temperature by three degrees is £174. This means in total, there would be a £14m saving for households in Southwark.

The ‘Wear Warm’ campaign will be featured nationwide at 660 charity shops, including big name chains such as RSPCA, Age UK, Citizen’s Advice and Mind.

What public art do you want to see around the borough?

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark residents can help shape the council’s public art policy with an ongoing consultation which aims to improve the inclusivity of public art.

The new Public Art Policy is part of Southwark Council’s Southwark Stands Together programme, a borough-wide response to the killing of George Floyd, and racism as a whole.

Public art is artwork in public spaces that anyone can see, such as monuments and murals.

The online survey allows any Southwark resident to contribute their views on what they would like to see adorning their streets.

Cllr Alice Macdonald, Cabinet Member for Equalities,

Neighbourhoods and Leisure, said: “In Southwark we are lucky to have many wonderful examples of public art, that showcase work and stories of people from the many diverse communities, who have made their home here.

“However, our public art consultation looks to take a step further and encourage people across the borough to help us shape our public art policy.

We want to better reflect people living in the borough on our streets, moving forward."

There are currently over 700 responses to the online consultation, which can be found by searching “public art” at www.consultations. southwark.gov.uk.

One particularly powerful instance of Southwark public art was the Peckham Peace wall in 2012, which featured a wall of post-it notes of love and respect following the 2011

London riots.

The wall totalled 4000 original postit messages, including those from then-London Mayor Boris Johnson and former Leader of Southwark Council Peter John.

Many people voiced their love of the borough and created messages of strength and peace for Peckham.

The riots which inspired the peace wall began after the police shooting of Mark Duggan, a 29 year old black man living in Tottenham, north London, who was wrongly suspected to be carrying a gun.

The Peckham Peace Wall launched on August 8, 2012 to mark the anniversary, and shows how public art can reflect the values of Southwark and act as a reaction to political turmoil.

The council’s consultation closes at midnight on 14th November 2021.

walworth residents take issue with plans to infill play area and move it ‘away from parents’ watchful eyes’ Exclusive

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk A Walworth estate is fighting to protect its children’s play area as it is set to be taken over by a council infill development - with a replacement built as part of it.

In the latest in its efforts to tackle the 15,000-strong waiting list for council homes, Southwark Council is proposing to develop eight new social rent homes on existing green space right next to Everett House on the Kingston Estate, Walworth.

Residents are fiercely protesting the proposal with signs and letters to the council, with complaints including that the development will block sunlight for Everett House, and take away the only space where children can easily play within view of their parents.

“Now they want to put our kids out of our sight to make up for the space they’re taking from us.” said Kingston Estate resident Jim Colfer, who has been organising the protests with other resident Peter Gamble. “It’s ridiculous.”

“The existing green space is the only place for the kids of Everett House where they can actually play while within visibility of their parents from home. The new space isn’t visible from most of the house.

“We’ve obviously objected to the development. It’s also going to block sunlight and take away space where people are growing food.

“They promise it’s not going to block sunlight - but that’s surely an absolute whopper. How can you build scaffolding right in front of a house without blocking sunlight?

“I’m sure we’re going to lose, but we’re not going to give up easily.”

Residents of Kingston Estate also feel that the council did not adequately communicate with them about the proposed development.

The consultation period ends today, November 11.

Cabinet member for housing and homelessness Cllr Stephanie Cryan told the News in response to concerns over the play area being relocated: “Space to play is very important and we do understand residents’ concerns but we hope that the proposed, new, natural play area might be something positive for them to consider as we move forward.

“We will continue to listen to their feedback and appreciate their input.”

Jim further highlighted that there are two homes currently lying empty on the Kingston Estate that could be used to help reduce the waiting list. Last month, residents of the Aylesbury Estate in Camberwell took part in a national protest against empty homes, urging local authorities to retrofit existing homes instead of solely developing new ones.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan came under criticism last month for her statements

in an exclusive interview with the News, in which she claimed that out of a housing stock of around 55,000, only 1.5 per cent were vacant at any given time.

This figure excluded empty homes on regeneration sites which form the vast majority of vacant properties, around 980 out of a current total of 1,351.

In a new strategy for tackling empty homes in the private sector published by the council last month, the local authority says it that its overall vacancy rate including regeneration sites is actually 3.9 per cent compared to 5.3 per cent across the borough as a whole.

Cllr Cryan said: “We held a consultation with Kingston Estate residents to gather their views and feedback on the proposals which took place over nine months, starting in October 2020.

“We understand that some residents have raised concerns and so we have committed to carrying out further engagement to ensure that residents’ wishes are reflected in the improvements we will be making to the overall estate. We look forward to continuing to work closely with residents here to provide desperatelyneeded new homes for our community.”

The council will make a decision on the Kingston Estate on November 16.

Lewisham was the only south-east London borough where cases rose, going up by 6.5 per cent across the week to 633.

Deaths after positive Covid tests also fell slightly from a low base over the week across south-east London, from

ten between October 26 and November 1 to eight between November 2 and November 8.

Southwark, Lambeth and Bexley each saw one death linked to Covid-19, while Bromley had two and Lewisham had three. There were no deaths in Greenwich.

It comes as the number of people who have had a booster jab in London passed one million last week. Some 1,066,200 people in the capital have taken up the offer of a third vaccine.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson and medical experts have called on people to come forward to get their booster vaccine, as the protection from the first two wanes over time.

Historic Borough site to get makeover

Two SEEN ‘sawing through a bike lock’ outside shopping centre

kit@southwarknews.co.uk One of the ‘most historic sites in Southwark’, which has been left empty for three years, is set to be transformed into restaurants and shops next year.

The Arch Company, the privateequity backed business that bought the railway arches from publicly-owned Network Rail in 2019, is refurbishing Findlater’s Corner at the north-eastern end of Borough High Street, by London Bridge station.

The site has lain empty since 2018, with Oddbins the last tenant. There will be four spaces to be let, which the Arch Company says suit restaurants and shops.

Southwark Council is also helping pay for the refurbishment through their Cleaner, Greener, Safer fund, as well as the Railway Heritage Trust and the Heritage of London Trust.

The corner is named after the wine merchants Findlater’s Mackie & Todd, who held a Royal Warrant. Findlater’s were at the site from 1865 – 1967.

You can still see the faded sign of Findlater’s Corner if you look hard enough.

The clock, which has a ceramic stag’s head, referenced Findlater’s Scottish roots and whisky business. It will be restored to working order as part of the renovation.

The original Victorian wine shop architecture was updated in 1897 and the façade was replaced with a Beaux Arts style frontage in a similar material to the Savoy Hotel on the Strand.

Adam Dakin, managing director of the Arch Company, said: “Findlater’s Corner is an iconic part of the fabric of London Bridge and the capital’s history, which is why we’re proud to be restoring it and bringing it back into use.”

The development is part of a £200m project by the Arch Company to bring 1,000 derelict and empty arches into use by 2030, which will create space for hundreds of extra businesses and thousands of jobs.

Lionel Wright, a local tour guide and writer, said he hoped that the earlier Victorian design could be researched as part of the refurbishment.

He told the News: “We'll have to see what the refurbishment brings. A balance has to be struck between the commercial interests of the developer and society’s need to conserve its architectural heritage.

“I hope The Arch Company continues to focus on its heritage obligations and makes good use of the ample conservation advice it has to hand.

“Looking forward, let’s also hope a positive outcome at Findlater’s Corner will lead on at the very least to cleaning of the other railway structures in the vicinity, to bring them up to the same level of the new London Bridge Station

More charges in huge criminal passport forgery investigation

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Another Sydenham man in his 60s has been charged as part of a huge investigation into forging hundreds of passports for criminals wanting to get into the UK.

Anthony Beard, 59, of Kirkdale, was charged with one count of conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice, one count of conspiracy to make a false instrument and one count of money laundering.

Beard is accused along with five others of being part of a crime group which provided hundreds of UK passports that enabled criminals – including people fleeing justice in the UK and international drug and firearm traffickers – to cross borders and conduct their business undetected.

Beard was bailed and is due to appear at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on November 17.

Officers from the National Crime Agency (NCA), who have been leading the investigation, say the group specialised in fraudulently-obtained genuine passports (FOGs) – documents which are issued authentically but have been applied for using false information. The result is a seemingly legitimate document, and FOGs are

therefore highly sought after by criminals worldwide.

Jacque Beer, NCA Regional Head of Investigations, said: “Since the operation which saw the arrests take place, we have worked patiently and diligently to build up evidence which has now led to these charges being authorised.

“We remain determined to disrupt and dismantle organised crime networks involved in this sort of activity.”

It comes after Christopher McCormack (also known as Christopher Zietek), aged 66, of Collingtree Road, Sydenham, appeared before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on October 12, charged with one count of conspiracy to pervert the course of public justice, two counts of conspiracy to make a false instrument and one count of money laundering.

McCormack was remanded in custody until his next appearance at Reading Crown Court on November 22.

McCormack, who splits his time between Spain, the UK and Ireland, is suspected of acting as a broker between criminals seeking to buy the passports and crime group members that supplied them.

The NCA ran the operation with support from HM Passport Office and the Dutch police.

Architect Benedict O’Looney said: “This is one of the oldest and most significant historic sites in Southwark, sitting just opposite the southern end of the medieval London Bridge and Southwark Cathedral. The Arch Company was set up by property investment company Telereal Trillium and US private equity giant Blackstone in 2019, after they bought Network Rail’s portfolio of 5,200 sites for about £1.5b.

The company was criticised during the pandemic for pushing up tenants’ rents. It says that it offered a £10m ‘hardship fund’ and offered a threemonth ‘rent holiday’ for businesses that were struggling.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police were called last Saturday, November 6, after two teenage boys were seen allegedly using an angle grinder to cut through a bike lock and steal a bike - in broad daylight outside a busy shopping centre.

Footage taken by an onlooker at the scene shows the two alleged thieves crouched over a bike outside Surrey Quays Shopping Centre. One of them is noisily sawing through a bike lock, with sparks flying.

The man filming asks them if the bike is theirs, at which they point they look up before going back to work on the lock. They soon finish and cycle off.

Police have not made any arrests yet.

A spokesperson for the Met said: "On Saturday, 6 November at 13:32hrs police were called to a report of a bike theft at Surrey Quays Shopping Centre.

"Officers attended and conducted initial enquiries. No arrests; enquiries continue."

Crown Court to be spared axe amid spiralling criminal case backlog Hundreds have closed since 2010

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Inner London Crown Court in Borough is unlikely to be closed despite earlier government plans, a new report has revealed.

HM Courts and Tribunals Service (HMCTS) has shut down hundreds of courts since 2010 in an effort to ‘streamline’ the judicial system. This was due to continue until Covid-19 struck, according to a report by the National Audit Office (NAO).

"HMCTS has confirmed it does not plan to dispose of any more court buildings as it needs to maximise courtroom capacity to support recovery," the NAO report said.

Inner London Crown Court, on Newington Causeway, was one of the courts mentioned as a possible target of "consolidation" in a 2018 HMCTS report, but appears to be safe from the axe for now.

The criminal justice system was facing a backlog of more than 60,000

crown court cases as of the end of June, according to the NAO report. That is an increase of nearly 50 per cent since the start of the pandemic.

The backlog matters: "delays could mean more victims and witnesses withdraw from the process, increasing the likelihood of cases collapsing," the NAO said.

London waiting times have been worst affected by Covid, by 72 per cent, compared with just eighteen per cent in the south-west of England.

Trials of rape and serious sexual offences are the worst-hit, because defendants are more likely to plead not guilty to these crimes. A not guilty plea

means the trial is likely to take longer.

Between March 31 2020 and 30 June 2021, the number of sexual offence trial cases in the Crown Court backlog rose by 71 per cent, with cases waiting longer than a year increasing 435 per cent.

Southwark has lost a crown court recently. Blackfriars Crown Court, which used to be one of three Crown Courts in the borough along with Inner London and Southwark, was closed in 2019 and sold off to be redeveloped into offices, complete with a 'sky forest'.

The court was used as a set for Netflix's crime drama Top Boy last year - while a backlog of tens of thousands of Crown Court cases was waiting to be heard.

“This is less about women being subjected to further surveillance themselves,” she said, “and much more about ensuring that men understand what constitutes unacceptable or even criminal behaviour, so that women are safe and reassured.

“Men who commit these actions will need to take full responsibility and will be held to account.

“We see our partnership work with the police as ensuring that men are challenged on inappropriate, aggressive or unwanted behaviour towards women.

Women should never feel unsafe as they go about their lives, it’s not acceptable for women to be made to feel awkward, intimidated, embarrassed, frightened or threatened by other people’s behaviour.”

The council’s women’s safety survey, conducted between May and June this year in order to research local opinion following the murder of Sarah Everard, received 568 responses. 52 per cent of respondents felt ‘unsafe’, and 92 per cent cited their gender as a reason to feel unsafe - particularly when travelling through transport hubs and at night.

charles@southwarknews.co.uk The Met Police’s plan to protect women from male violence by using undercover officers has been met with mixed reactions from Southwark community groups, with one saying it’s “not the right focus,” while another called for women to be trained in self-defence.

Announced on November 3, the new policy will, among other plans, include pairs of non-uniformed officers in nightclubs who will alert uniformed officers to instances of predatory behaviour.

Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick met with women’s groups from Southwark and Lambeth to help formulate the plan, which she hopes will help women and girls “have confidence that their safety is at the heart of how we operate.”

However, one of the Southwark-based groups involved in the meeting, Solace Women’s Aid, felt the announcement did not deal with the problem within the police.

“We urgently need a recognition from the Met Police that there is institutional misogyny and racism and how the current culture will be addressed,” said Rebecca Goshawk, Deputy Director of Business Development with Solace Women’s Aid. “At a time when trust in the police is so low, putting plain clothes officers into nightclubs is not the right focus.

What we need the Met to be focusing on is systematic change which tackles perpetrators of violence and abuse in their own ranks and rebuilding trust with women.”

The issue of public trust in the police emerged as key to the discussion. In the widely-publicised trial of former policeman Wayne Couzens for the murder of Sarah Everard, it was revealed that Couzens had used his position as a police officer to gain Sarah’s trust.

Mark Webb, chair of Southwark Neighbourhood Watch Association, agreed with Rebecca that the introduction of non-uniformed officers would do little to tackle the issue of male violence against women.

“Clearly Cressida hasn't been to a busy club, with hundreds of people as potential victims and potential attackers all in the same place at the same time, with the lights flashing, music pounding, drinks flowing,” he said. “It would be like trying to find one particular needle in a stack of needles. No pun intended.”

However, while Rebecca felt that the responsibility lay with the police to regain the public’s trust to fight violence, Mark argued that the best response was to train women in self-defence.

“In every society and in every community there are good people and

there are bad people. Hence we will always have a percentage of the Police Service that's going to be bigoted, violent and abusive.

“I suggest we start teaching girls in schools at an early age about the real world, teach them self-defence and personal safety, and give free classes with child care facilities for women in selfdefence.

“Even suggesting this approach leads to fierce backlash on social media from some women saying that men have to change.

“I understand and acknowledge that.

However that's a long term social change and something that doesn't provide an answer to the current problem.

"Women who do undertake selfdefence and personal safety training generally say that it's empowering and a huge aid to self confidence. Empowered, confident and trained people are far less likely to be victims of violent crime.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council has apologised after residents of a Bermondsey estate were left holding their breath waiting for a large communal bin to be emptied for nine months.

The bin, at the corner of Drappers Way on St James's Road, part of the Rouel Road estate, was not emptied because high winds slammed the gate against the brickwork surrounding it. Southwark Council put up fencing around the bin, while rubbish and empty drinks cans lay strewn on the pavement as the bin - normally emptied weekly - was left in place.

The bin was finally emptied on Monday (November 8). Council officers at the scene said it had been there for about nine months, adding that the reason it took so long was because it took a while to find a competent contractor.

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “The issue wasn’t as simple as emptying a bin sadly, so we did need to speak to a number of contractors for different specialist works – the wall needed repair due to some damage and we had to be sure that moving the container would not cause further damage and added costs. All waste has now been removed and the site will be secured so that all repair works can be completed. Our apologies to residents that this has taken longer than usual.”

Cracking up: Camberwell residents fear their home will collapse

By Charles Harrison A building redevelopment in Camberwell has rendered its neighbours terrified of their house collapsing after a wait of over 30 years to get the problem fixed.

Completed in 1990, the works on a building in Camberwell Grove, conducted by a company that has since been taken over by housing association Peabody, split the house into several flats.

However, the work was seemingly done without the specialist contractor necessary to perform work on a historical building, and the result is terrifying cracks emerging in the neighbour’s wall over the last 30 years. They are likely due to the weight of the new roof in the development.

The residents, who wish to remain anonymous, have been left in a “hellish” situation where they cannot sell their property due to the cracked walls, nor can they convince Peabody to deal with the situation, they say.

They live in fear after a building of a similar historical background collapsed in Chelsea this time last year, causing 40 people to be evacuated.

After hiring a private consultant, it was discovered that the cracks go right through to the bricks themselves.

Eventually the frustrated residents got MP for Camberwell and Peckham Harriet Harman involved in 2018, Peabody wrote a letter back in which they admitted responsibility for repairing the damage caused to the building. However, the association is yet to fix the problem.

“We did manage to arrange a meeting after Harriet got in touch, but then it just went blank. We heard nothing from them for ages, and now whenever we call, we have to explain the situation all over again.

“We’re desperate. We should be living in this beautiful house, but we can’t decorate properly because of the cracks. We can’t do anything until they’re sorted. We’d move, but how can you sell a place with cracks like that?”

Peabody, in their response to MP Harman said they had tried and failed to make further contact with the residents.

Meanwhile, the neighbour on the other side, ninety-year-old widower Jim Tanner, is now facing water leakage through the walls just a year after losing both his wife of fifty years and his son.

He woke up to find water all over his floor. Due to his old age, he is concerned for his health.

“I used to be an architect myself,” said Jim, “so I know what I’m talking about. This is coming from next door.”

A Peabody spokesperson said of the cracks in the wall: “We have followed the recommendations of independent third-party surveyors and accepted their proposed schedule of works. We have been working hard to find an agreement and resolution to this and will continue to discuss the matter with the owners.”

Regarding the leak in the other property, they stated: “We have established that the leak is being caused by blockages and damage to the guttering of their own property, so they will be responsible for carrying out the repairs on their own home.

We have shared the result of the drone survey which shows this, and we hope it will not be too long before the issue is resolved.”

Primary school teacher and mother of four Emma McGovern (pictured below) spoke to the News last month when she and other leaseholders in Oyster Court were told they would need to foot the bill for £2.6 million of fire safety works in their building. £85,000 of this would be for the McGovern family.

“Do they think we can actually afford nearly £100k?” Said Emma. “What are they going to do - repossess the whole block?

“There’s such a lack of transparency. We literally had a zoom last week with Optivo last week, and they didn’t mention any of this.

“The money seems so excessive for what’s being done - especially because when we first got the flat, the package said our doors were already fire safe.

“The money is getting silly now.”

Last week, Oyster Court residents thought they were getting a moment of relief when managing housing company Optivo announced they planned to pause works for another three weeks.

An Optivo spokesperson said at the time: “We feel it’s sensible to wait a few more weeks so we can meet and speak

to residents further and address any outstanding concerns.

“We’ve promised to contact residents by Friday 26 November with further details around when we’ll be carrying out the works.”

However, last weekend on November 6, Emma was shocked to receive a letter not with an invitation to discussion, but with a bill of £56,214.95 to be added to the existing £2.6 million.

The letter details that the additional works are primarily focused around making the doors safe, such as updating them to be fire safe and adjusting them to close properly to prevent the spread of smoke.

It is not clear why these works were not included in the original assessment of the building, or why residents have only been told about them at this time.

The letter gave residents a date of December 7 to respond to the letter.

A spokesperson for Oyster Court said: “An independent fire risk assessor carried out a fire risk assessment (FRA) at Oyster Court in May 2021. The FRA is a legal requirement.

“All recommendations made for remedial action following the FRA are assigned a priority and should be completed within certain timescales.

"This is separate to the work to the external wall system at Oyster Court which has been delayed. We’ll continue to progress fire safety work to internal areas where these are required.

“Our priority is to ensure our residents are safe.”

Southwark Council created five new conservation areas near the Old Kent Road, one of the main areas for new housebuilding in the borough, at a planning meeting last week.

Conservation areas are protected by law because of special or historic architectural character and appearance.

The council has to protect their character from being damaged by changes to the landscape. In practice this means that demolishing buildings becomes harder, and developers need special permission to do so.

All five new conservation areas are in Peckham and Walworth in the Old Kent Road opportunity area, where the council wants 20,000 homes to be built.

Some at the meeting were concerned that creating these new conservation areas could be a barrier to new developments in the area.

Cllr James Coldwell asked: "If the committee approves this conservation area, does this affect the projected number of affordable homes that the council will be able to build along the Old Kent Road in future, or not?"

Planners recommended it for conservation because of its "high quality working class tenement housing above shops in fine terraces with largely intact original detailing, materials and architecture."

Kentish Drovers and Bird in Bush is centred on Commercial Road and Bird in Bush Road in north Peckham.

The area is " typical of early residential development off the Old Kent Road with a mix of urban buildings fronting onto the main road with smaller scale cottages, industry and school buildings located on side streets", as well as "intact early 19thcentury terraced, semi-detached and detached properties with fine detailing and largely unaltered exteriors."

These new conservation areas take the total in Southwark to 54.

Elephant theatre group take over West End’s building centre at night to stage seven plays commenting on new developments

Despite its location, just off Tottenham Court Road, this impressive building, which last month celebrated its 90th birthday, is not an attraction that draws in the usual West End crowds. A home to architects, planners and builders from across the globe, the centre has taken the bold step to allow a company of actors in, to create a show that comments on the ever-changing landscape of our city.

Waste Not Theatre Company, who are based at the Elephant & Castle in a new hub known as BOLD Elephant, has devised seven short plays to be staged in and among the centre’s many exhibition spaces.

While audiences embark on a journey through the centre’s exhibits they will discover stories both trivial and of life and death.

The array of displays on offer at the Building Centre is forever-changing and can include a whole room of intercoms and doorbells, to the latest in lighting devices for the home, but they also

showcases large scale exhibitions and even industry-led ‘festivals’.

While Vertical Horizons is being staged the centre is exhibiting architectural models, which bizarrely include a model of St Paul’s Cathedral set in a jelly mould. It will play host to the Wood for Good festival to coincide with the COP26 conference. A celebration of global timber and forest, it includes an illuminated sculpture which guides visitors through the journey from the forest, to tree, to house.

But when the lights are off and the exhibits are cast into darkness the ushers of Vertical Horizons, a new development company that hopes to revolutionise the way we live in the city, will attempt to take groups of audiences through their own interactive exhibition to consider what our residential future holds.

doctors running for their own cancer patients Two men are set to run 100 kilometres for charity this Saturday, November 13, as part of a 550-kilometre odyssey.

Dr Benjamin Miller and Dr Aleix Rovira from Guy’s and St Thomas’ have been doing a monthly run, starting with a distance of ten kilometres, then adding an extra ten kilometres to the next run.

The money they raise will go to the new Guy's Head and Neck cancer centre.

Dr Miller, an ear nose and throat registrar, said: “The first few months were fine as we’d run those kinds of distances before, but from there it kind of spiralled out of control and now we’re doing these insane runs that we would never have contemplated before.”

The most recent run - 90 kilometres - took nearly thirteen and a half hours to finish, with the runners starting at midnight.

The runs normally start at Guy's Hospital. For the twenty-kilometre run Dr Miller pushed his two young children Zara and Casper in a buggy.

Dr Miller said: “Some of the longer distances have been really difficult at

times, but also surprisingly nice. We’ve got to see some places we’d never have visited and we’ve challenged ourselves to do something we never thought would be possible.”

Dr Rovira, a head and neck consultant, added: “We’re managing to do things which months ago would have sounded unbelievable. The 100 kilometre run will be the icing on the cake. I’m sure we’ll suffer a bit but the feeling at the end will be great.”

The two doctors are encouraging people to join them for part of the run.

Friends, family and colleagues are set to take part in the final stretch, from Hyde Park to Guy's Hospital.

Dr Rovira said: “In the delirium of some of our longer runs, Ben and I have talked about how amazing it would be to have others join us for the run, like in Forest Gump! Everyone is invited to join us at any point, particularly at the end as we cross the finish line.”

The two men's fundraising is part of a wider set of activities by head and neck cancer staff that has raised more than 100,000 in total.

Staff have taken on ten activities over ten months, either individually

or in groups, including triathlons, swimming challenges and bake sales.

All of the money raised will go towards different projects to help patients with head and neck cancer.

“We’re doing this for our patients,” said Dr Rovira. “Knowing that we’re fundraising for them definitely keeps us going.”

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer globally, with more than 650,000 people diagnosed annually. Around 1,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with head and neck cancer every month.

There are more than fifteen areas within the head and neck where cancer can develop, including the mouth and lips, voice box, throat and nose. Despite advances in treatment, many of those diagnosed with head and neck cancer still die.

Guy’s head and neck cancer centre aims to speed up the diagnosis for head and neck cancer patients and improve the ways they are treated for their condition by minimising side-effects, maximising treatment effectiveness and reducing rates of recurrence.

A Bermondsey pub is raising money for a Down's Syndrome charity on behalf of a little girl with the condition.

Two-year-old Sophia, whose grandmother is from the area, has Down's Syndrome.

The Ancient Foresters pub on Southwark Park Road is running a charity raffle and auctioning off Millwall tickets this Friday evening, November 12, from 8.30pm on behalf of the Down's Syndrome Association, manager Sandra Smith said.

The Down's Syndrome Association is a national charity that is "committed to improving quality of life for people with Down’s syndrome, promoting their right to be included on a full and equal basis with others."

Bermondsey homeless restaurant’s ten years A Bermondsey restaurant that helps homeless people off the streets and into work is celebrating its tenth anniversary this week.

Brigade, a restaurant and bar on Tooley Street, was set up in 2011 as a social enterprise. The restaurant has taken on about 6,000 vulnerable people since then, many of them homeless, as apprentices in the kitchen and in other parts of the business.

Brigade is celebrating with a fourcourse dinner this Saturday night, November 13, to raise money for the Beyond Food Foundation, which supports vulnerable adults towards independent living beyond homelessness.

Apprentices will be cooking alongside Brigade founder and CEO Simon Boyle and Stephan and Stefan Pini, from Fishmongers Hall on the north side of London Bridge, who have helped the restaurant with funding.

Simon said: “We are very proud to be hosting this special event alongside Stephen and Stefan Pini and The Fishmongers Livery who have been incredibly supportive over many years.

“Whilst we are proud to have been able to help and support so many people onto our programmes over the last ten years, the issues we are seeing around homelessness right now are heart-breaking. The problem hasn’t gone away and our work has never been more important. We need to raise funds now more than ever since the pandemic to ensure we support those who are on the periphery of society.”

“Charities like ours make a real difference to the lives or so many people, it’s really important that we continue to keep doing what we can to help alleviate some of the difficulties people are going through. Events like this are crucial to help raise awareness and funds for the many programmes and courses we run.”

Volunteers clean up three tones of weed in rotherhithe More than 50 volunteers cleared about three tonnes of weed from the Albion Channel in Rotherhithe over the weekend.

The volunteers were organised by the Surrey Docks Angling Club and met on Saturday, November 6.

People of all ages came to lend a hand to remove the weed. The removal equipment was lent by Stave Hill Ecology Park, also in Rotherhithe.

The weed can be dangerous for fish and wildlife, and the angling club said that members have had to rescue several fish in recent weeks.

Dulwich boys at COP26 A pavilion designed by a Dulwich boys’ school is on display at COP26 in Glasgow.

The pavilion was designed by aspiring architects and engineers from Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich following a two-day workshop at Grimshaw Archichects last February.

It shows a deconstructed dome pulled apart by the symbolic hands of humanity, illustrating the impact of human creation and our destruction of the planet.

Jamie Allison, Assistant Principal at Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich, said: “We are hugely proud that the students involved in the Scale Rule workshop can evidence a sustainable project taken from concept through to production, particularly for such a

major world event as COP26.

“Our STEM curriculum’s real-world impact and relevance is inspiring for students. Working with architects, designers and engineers has motivated our students to pursue careers in the field and sparked further interest in the STEM industry across the school.

"We now have record numbers of students attend our 'Designers and Engineers' after-school club. This engagement between industry and education will only continue to create the future leaders and thinkers we need to tackle the climate challenge."

During the visit, they met Jon Snow, Channel 4 News Presenter, Andrew Whalley, the chairman of Grimshaw, and Sir Tim Smit, who runs the Eden Project in Cornwall.

A spokesperson for the angling club thanked the volunteers for "their brilliant response" in coming out at such short notice, the ecology park for providing equipment and Southwark Council for removing the bagged-up weed at the end of the day.

The club added that there will be more events to remove the weed in future and at least one more before the end of the year.

Some people have also noted that the pond in Southwark Park appears to be suffering from a similar problem.

10th November 2021, London TEDI-London, the capital’s new engineering higher education provider, is set to welcome approximately 70 guests to its recently opened, purpose-built campus later this month. Difficult time in the House T

his last month has been a very difficult time. The Conservative MP David Amess was brutally attacked by a coward but Parliament came together to celebrate his 38 years of service. During the fitting tributes to his humour and gentlemanly conduct, we remembered my friend Jo Cox and it was a day which showed the very best of Westminster.

Sadly, however, last week saw some of the lowest behaviour ever to disgrace Parliament. A Tory MP broke 300-year-old rules by taking hundreds of thousands of pounds to ask questions and secure access to Ministers. The cross-party, independent process found him guilty of ‘an egregious case’ of rule breaking but Boris Johnson ordered Tory MPs to vote to overturn the ruling and to protect the guilty culprit from punishment.

We perhaps should not be surprised under a government that has seen prosecutions for crime slump to just one in ten, but Tory sleaze and outright corruption was back in some force – and backed right from the top in a way we have never seen before in the UK.

After World War II Labour built the NHS, social security, and more housing than any previous government. The current administration announced very little – and much of what did appear was a rehash. I have pored over the Budget trying to spot anything for London, but our capital was sadly overlooked despite 40% child poverty in parts of Southwark, a housing crisis, and an infrastructure challenge requiring investment from Ministers who seem disinterested in the economic case which proves that when London builds, the whole country benefits.

The Chancellor’s only big claim in his Budget was that ‘public services will receive the biggest investment in a decade’. Which demonstrates what a loss the last 11 years of Tory misrule has been. The country would have been better off sticking with Labour since 2010!

ix years ago, I was part of a group of 120 people who cycled from south London to the COP21 climate conference in Paris.

On the way, we met protestors against fracking in a Sussex village, and primary school children who gave us pictures of their hopes for the future to take to the world leaders.

The COP conferences focus on what governments can do through law and policy to cut carbon emissions. We were outside the official meetings, but we were part of a huge gathering of ordinary people who had turned up to ask governments to do more. In short: to keep fossil fuels like oil and gas in the ground.

Since 2015, a lot has changed in public understanding. ‘Doughnut economics’ even made it onto EastEnders this month. Economist Kate Raworth came up with the doughnut image to symbolise the ‘safe space’ for humanity. Inside

the doughnut, we can make sure everyone has essentials such as food, healthcare and shelter, and still remain within planetary limits – preserving clean air and water, biodiversity and temperatures that support life.

This time, I’m just following the news from home. I miss the sense of community from Paris 2015.

But here in Southwark, I belong to many different groups, as does everyone reading this: people you know through work or study, as neighbours, fellow patients, parents or customers, members of faith groups and football teams, close friends and family.

All those groups have the potential to create new ways of living ‘inside the doughnut’. You might take inspiration from the Lucas Aerospace workers in the 1970s who came up with a plan to use their expertise and technology to pivot from military production to fuel cells and transport systems.

Credit ‘uplift’ worth £86 a month, the Budget replaced it with a new taper system which returns less than what Ministers have already taken, and to far fewer people. Most families will remain worse off – and that’s before new taxes are imposed.

Tory policy means taxes will reach their highest level in over 70 years and will cost most families an extra £3,000.

Ministers are simply not offering any value for money either, especially not to communities like ours where we still have fewer police officers than we did in 2010 and are simply underserved by the corrupt and increasingly grubby Johnson Government, lining Tory donors’ pockets with covid contracts, and allowing the return of ‘cash for questions’ sleaze.

As winter begins to bite, and despite making some further security adjustments, I am still here to help.

I will still see people face-to-face in my Bermondsey office, but with prebooked appointments only. This is a crucial part of our democracy, but it is also one of the best parts of serving our community. The News undertook a straw poll on Twitter last week to see if £63 million of Southwark Council money currently earmarked for upgrading the Elephant & Castle tube station should be clawed back to launch a new tram for the borough.

The poll came after we ran a front page story on the subject last Thursday.

Readers who took part came out in favour of the tram, with 57.9 per cent voting for it and 42.1 per cent voting to keep the money for the station.

You can see why reviving a tram network is a popular idea and it has all party support. However, it is still unclear whether the council would be prepared to get back the £37.8 million it has already handed over to Transport for London (TfL) and keep back a further £25.2 million it plans to spend on Elephant and Castle tube station ticket hall, in order to make a tram network possible.

Given that plans for a Bakerloo Line Extension, with two new stations on the Old Kent Road, have been stalled due to TfL not being able to secure the funding for the government, the tram argument posed by the Lib Dem’s at the Town Hall is an easy one to see.

Our heritage enhances new developments

I

t’s great news that Southwark Council has created five new conservation areas along the Old Kent Road in Peckham and Walworth. When people think about the Old Kent Road, often what they imagine is a busy jumble of warehouses, industrial estates

and shops. It’s not often that we think about it as a place of rich history and architectural merit.

And yet, as the council’s planning team’s reports on the five new conservation areas show, just off

the main road there is an array of wonderful nineteenth- and twentieth-century housing, schools and other buildings that are worthy of attention, protection and preservation.

Among them are Pembroke House in Walworth, an 1880s building set up by students from the

Cambridge college to help underprivileged people in the area, which is still a community centre today. The handsome former Livesey Library in Peckham was founded in the late nineteenth

century to give workers at the local gasworks access to books. Both of these are monuments to the long history of community work in Southwark.

As council officers highlighted at the planning meeting where the new sites were voted in,

conservation areas do not need to be a barrier to development. That’s good - Southwark Council wants to get thousands of homes built along the Old Kent Road in the coming decade, including many affordable homes for local people.

What it does mean is that the standard for new developments should be higher, which is to be

welcomed. If the Old Kent Road area is going to be transformed in the coming decade - and it is a big ‘if’, given the uncertain future of the Bakerloo line extension - it is right that our local heritage is preserved and enhanced by the new building.

Brian and Roger met at a support group for recently divorced men.

Roger was attending because he was genuinely grieving the loss of his marriage. Brian was instructed to attend by his solicitor if he wanted to dodge paying alimony.

Roger is in need of guidance and support, which Brian willingly supplies’, says the press release, and so the scene was set for one of the funniest plays I’ve seen this year, writes Michael Holland.

The two men have fallen into despair. Brian lives in student digs while Roger sleeps on the settee in the house of an 82-year-old woman.

A highlight of their shared misery is watching a DVD on a borrowed laptop, while standing up in a tiny kitchen.

Roger wants to be back with his wife and son. Brian wants to relive his youth all over again, which means getting involved with drugs and all the scummy schemes that accompany that world. But Brian takes a hands-off approach to that seedy side of his life by convincing Roger that his finances would improve if he was the seance stooge for a scam artist out to fleece the grieving and vulnerable of this world.

Then there is the poker game with Albanian and Russian heavies, played in the fridge of an abattoir. Once again, you know this is not going to

end well for Roger.

Over time, Roger becomes bait for attack dogs, a burglar, a drug courier and the man who has to go deep into the Chinese mountains on a stolen

donkey to persuade a village to move two miles to the East, plus battle with a snake and a tropical disease.

The madder Brian & Roger gets the funnier it becomes. The unbelievable

exploits are reminiscent of the drugfuelled travels the writers of Loaded magazine enjoyed in the 1990s.

Brian & Roger started life as a podcast written and performed

by Dan Skinner (Roger) and Harry Peacock, who could not play Brian for medical reasons, so it already had an audio life before this production turned it in to a visual extravaganza with the aid of some brilliant video design by Timothy Bird that magically brings the words to life as well as transport us all around the world.

The performances are impeccable, with high praise going to Simon Lipkin who stood in at short notice to get strapped down and ‘probed’ in a sex dungeon for his art.

At first I felt sorry for the putupon Roger, always short of money and always at the mercy of Brian’s ‘business opportunities’, but I came to feel that if he can’t learn from his mistakes then he must suffer the consequences. Plus, Brian was living the best life.

Brian and Roger is played out via the voicemail they leave on each other’s phones and subtitled, ‘A Highly Offensive Play’, but no one can get offended. In fact, it is a highly hilarious play and should be seen.

Alien Xenojellies’ attack on Tate Modern I received the invite and went along for the opening of Anicka Yi’s In Love With The World, her art piece for Tate Modern’s Turbine Hall, a fantastically huge space that any artist would love to have access to. What I found was nothing to do with loving the world but terrifying, floating jellyfish that had obviously come to take over the planet, writes Michael Holland.

I immediately thought I was in some War of the Worlds battle and waited for the aliens to fire death rays into the crowd, taking us all out with a few nicely aimed zaps, but nothing came. Why were the people not running to get out, screaming to others to turn back and head for safety? Why were small children looking up with awe and wonderment at the terror above?

‘Grab your child and get out of here,’ I wanted to cry.

And then my own little world of wonder ended when Security strolled over and told me to grow up.

In Love With The World is Yi’s attempt to break down the barriers between plants, animals, microorganisms and technology, and for us humans to think about the

ecosystems we live in.

The ‘aerobes’ show different behaviours as they respond to scents and each other. Their shapes remind us of sea creatures and plants but with artificial intelligence. Different aromas will be wafted throughout the hall, each having a connection to this part of London: spices, marine smells, coal, and vegetation. As the scentscape changes so will the behaviour of the ‘Xenojellies’ and ‘Planulae’.

This is a magnificent piece of work that people of all ages can relate to. Perhaps not in the way that Yi would hope, but people will engage enough to take something from it.

Watching the floating objects evokes a warm feeling of calm; it almost commands an atmosphere of quiet if not absolute silence. In Love With The World will no doubt be another Turbine Hall success, and the only attack on Tate Modern will not be from Yi’s Aerobes but from those not willing to look at art that is not in a frame on a wall.

Roll up! Roll up! The Ring Master is coming to town David Williamson is a giant in all that he does. He waves away the numerous awards received for his magic skills with a dismissive ‘If you hang around long enough they feel they have to give you something.’ But I don’t believe that.

This man has worked with the best because he deserves to; he is the complete showman and that will be evident when he returns to town as the Ring Master in Circus 1903, writes Michael Holland.

I wanted to know what happens in a person’s life to make them want to be a magician and found that all the signs were there in young David’s life. As a 7-year-old in ‘Mrs Moore’s class’ he read a book about Harry Houdini that taught a coin trick which he performed to his classmates. ‘Mrs Moore pointed at me and said, “David, maybe someday you’ll be a magician”, and that neural pathway was then burnt into my brain.’

Soon after, a travelling magician visited David’s school in small-town Xenia, Ohio, and Mrs Moore asked if their ‘little magician’ could help carry the props.

The following Christmas, David received a Magic Set from Santa and he was hooked. ‘I had a pack of cards under my desk in class and used to practise all day, every day,’ remembers the man who has since performed alongside the greatest conjurors. ‘I had to make sure I didn’t shuffle them too loudly, or drop them all,’ he laughs. Aged 10 he told his mother, ‘I’m going to be a professional magician,’ and by 13 he was going to festivals and conventions on his own.

It was during these formative years that he met the ‘masters of magic’ who were very generous with their advice and guidance. ‘They could see that I was keen,’ he recalls vividly. ‘They could see my passion.’ He now pays that help forward when young magicians approach him at conventions.

Geoff Bell goes back to the Deep What would it take for an actor, who had built up a great reputation for solid film work, to return to the theatre. Geoff Bell, who has made his way in a very difficult industry playing roles as diverse as footballers, football thugs, drug importers, armed robbers, cozzers, and soldiers, is now back in fringe theatre, where it all began for him, directing the play that first brought him to the attention of casting directors, writes Michael Holland.

The play, John Patrick Shanley’s Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, tells of two troubled souls colliding in a soulless bar. Danny, bruised from fighting his way through life and pubs relishes the battles he has fought. Roberta struggles to conquer the battle she is fighting within herself. They are not made for each other.

Over beer the dynamic flows from one to the other; Roberta stands up to his bullying, overbearing demeanour and provokes him to violence against her. She doesn’t mind. She gets straight back up and the power switches. Danny reveals a dark secret to shock but Roberta

responds with a darker secret, which Danny has no social skills to deal with. His body and mind surrender and he softens.

Act II we join them in Roberta’s room after they have made love. She coerces him into being loving and romantic, which he initially finds difficult but soon gets the hang of, in his own way. Neither are comfortable with someone being nice to them but by the end they had negotiated a way to deal with their demons.

This two-hander is superbly played out by Martin Serene and Franziska Morai under the guidance of Bell who played Danny over 20 years ago.

I asked Geoff how he got involved and he told me that the two actors asked him for advice on good acting parts. ‘I told ‘em to do this play, as it was a big hit for me when I put it on in the Old Red Lion Theatre.’

Martin and Franziska then convinced Geoff to direct, which is how we got to the this point. ‘They had ten days to rehearse,’ he says. ‘And they pulled it off - I love ‘em!’

Have you enjoyed the experience?

‘It’s taken me back to my early days in fringe theatre, with all the problems you

have with the staging and lighting and electrics…; Adding, ‘I don’t think I’ll ever act on stage again but I will direct more plays.’

Geoff then gave little teasers about The Curse, a comedy crime series coming on our TV screens in the coming months, plus a film that he wrote and directed himself during Lockdown that has already won him an award for best firsttime director in Venice Beach film festival.

“It’s about the old man; a very personal subject.’

The personal, heartfelt work will also be see in Kinden, a film about a son dying of cancer: ‘It’s f**king heartbreaking, Michael,’ he said softly. ‘It’s completely different from what I’ve usually played but it’s one of the best jobs I’ve done.’

So all is good in the world of Bell, and with Danny and the Deep Blue Sea about to be another hit under his belt the future is looking good.

A succession of school talent shows was followed by a job with a troupe of belly dancers that eased David into the world of show business. He says, ‘I was dressed as a genie, and while the belly dancers did their thing on stage I would go round the tables doing tricks for the drunks.’

Magic and trickery has been around for all time, and with so many young performers coming up its future is guaranteed, but there must be a tremendous pressure to keep up with the game. David and others of his generation see new magicians on the internet displaying a great deal of knowledge and expertise, but he tells me that there is no real rivalry and that knowledge and ideas are all shared amongst them all.

David himself is always inventing new tricks, some of which can be seen in his current show, Circus 1903.

David got involved in Circus 1903 when he was touring with The Illusionists and one of the producers told him he was thinking about creating ‘a retro circus show with life-size elephant puppets and all the talent out front and centre’.

I thought he was crazy, reveals David, ‘just a modern-day Barnum talking up a big game with no way he could pull it off. And sure enough, two years later I got a call asking if I’d like to be the Ring Master - “Our elephants are ready and the circus is coming to town,” he said, and I jumped straight on board.’

Circus 1903 has now toured all the continents and will be back for Christmas in London. The Ring Master tells of how the show has recreated what circus was like in the early part of the 20th century, and of ‘hardcore, 6th generation circus acts who with each generation take the act further artistically and physically and now do it at a much higher level’.

Circus 1903 looks like it will be quite a show again this year. Along with the world’s greatest puppet elephants,

Queen and Peanut, will be the acrobats, The Russian Bar; The Daring Desafios; The Cycling Cyclone; The Elastic Dislocationist; The Flying Fredonis; Les Incredibles; The Great Gaston; The Sensational Sozonov; The Remarkable Risleys and hula hoopist Mademoiselle Natalia. A gathering of greats that will amaze, captivate and transport audiences back to a Golden Age of circus.

As our conversation came to an end I gave David the last word: ‘Our show is a theatrical circus and families may not be prepared for the emotional experience of it all because we tell the whole story of a circus coming to town… The first half you see us getting the big top ready and rehearsing and caring for the elephants, with little vignettes that give backstories to the performers, and you add this to the music and lights and it is a real theatrical experience, so people really get caught up in it. In the second half, we do the circus with sideshow segments…

It is thrilling, exciting, hilarious, a little scary, sweet, it’s touching, heartwarming and people leave the theatre buoyant.’

He took a breath. ‘And what I’ve seen in the audiences, ‘he began again, ‘is three generations of families all sitting together, enjoying the same thing, which is rare these days as most families are spread between different rooms looking at screens on their own. No Marvel movie will capture people flying through the air in front of you like in this show This is old school done the modern way.’

I left knowing I had been prepared to see a big show with a big frontman making sure everything goes off right.

History Included is a centenary ceremony being held in Bermondsey Services of remembrance are to be held across Southwark this week, including a centenary ceremony for a Bermondsey battalion in Old Jamaica Road, writes Kit Heren...

The first service will be on Armistice Day today (Thursday, November 11), and another will be held on Remembrance Sunday (Sunday, November 14), with both starting at 10.45am.

Gary Magold, who is organising the West Lane services, will make a short announcement at the start of the ceremony to ask anyone who wants to lay a wreath or a bunch of flowers during the service to let him know.

This year marks a return to the Remembrance Sunday service at West Lane, after a coronavirus-enforced break last year.

Meanwhile a special centenary service is going to be held at Old Jamaica Road by the Queen's Court block of flats, which commemorates the 22nd battalion of the London regiment (Queen's) and its successor unit, the sixth (Bermondsey) battalion.

The service will take place at 10am on Sunday, November 14, to allow people to go to other ceremonies afterwards.

Peter Swanson, Lieutenant-Colonel of the sixth (Bermondsey) Battalion of the Queen's Royal Regiment, said: "This year's event is particularly significant because it

is the 100th anniversary of the memorial's inauguration in 1921, three years after the end of World War 1. On the memorial are inscribed nearly 1000 names of soldiers from this single battalion who died during this war.

"There is also a plaque attached to commemorate the fallen of sixth (Bermondsey) Battalion the Queen's Royal Regiment during World War 2. This Battalion was the successor unit to 22nd Londons after the reorganisation of the Territorial Army in the 1930s. Further reorganisations of the Army since the 1960s have resulted in several regimental amalgamations and today the Queen's Royal Regiment lives on within the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment whose First Battalion is currently based in Woolwich.

"Because of the special nature of this year's event a small detachment from this Battalion... will parade in front of the memorial for the ceremony. Associated with the memorial are also the cadets of 72 (Bermondsey) Detachment Army Cadet Force, based at Bacons College, who also proudly wear the badge of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment and are always on the lookout for enthusiastic young recruits."

The official Southwark service for Remembrance Sunday will take place at The Southwark Memorial, Walworth Square, on Sunday, November 14, at 10.50am. The service will be led by Canon Jonathan Sedgwick, acting Archdeacon of Southwark.

Another service will take place as usual at St Saviour's memorial on Borough High Street.

All are welcome to all services.

The story of two brothers in arms

Eileen’s research into her uncles is typical tale of the many men lost during WWI

A few years ago, a Southwark woman called Eileen Ray told her friend Sylvia Anderson about her two uncles from Camberwell who had served and died in World War 1, writes Kit Heren...

Eileen knew very little about them because her mother had only been five when they had gone off to serve in the war.

The two friends decided to research Eileen's uncles: Frederick William James Jr Freeman and Edwin James Freeman.

Frederick was born in 1894 and Edwin followed four years later, in 1898.

Records show Frederick was educated in Camberwell, at a school established

by Trinity College, Cambridge to help disadvantaged children.

He seems to have completed his education successfully, Sylvia and Eileen found, and had begun work as an apprentice compositor - someone who arranged keys in a printing press - by the age of sixteen. There is no information available about Edwin's schooling.

Both brothers were in the army by 1915, military records show, but they

may have joined earlier. Frederick became a Rifleman in the London Regiment and Edwin became a Rifleman in the Rifle Brigade.

Very little is known about the lives of the two young men during the war.

A poignant letter from Frederick to his parents reads: “Dear father, how are you going on at home? I am quite well, out of the trenches for some time, having our rest. Will you send me a parcel. Expect leave while here. Shall write letter later. Fred”. It is not known whether he was able to write another letter.

Sadly, both men died in the war, alongside nearly 900,000 others from Britain and its colonies. Frederick died in action on April 30 1916 in Arras, in France. Edwin also died in action - on August 14, 1917 in Flanders.

Edwin has no grave, like many soldiers who died in the First World War. Frederick is commemorated on the memorial in the Faubourg d’Amiens British Cemetery in Arras.

For their service the brothers were awarded the British War Medal and Victory Medal; additionally, Frederick was awarded the 1914-1915 Star Medal.

Sylvia added: "Although Eileen did not know [her uncles], she feels a strong connection to them and is extremely proud of them for the sacrifice they made for their country. On Sunday 14 November she will join the rest of the nation in remembering her uncles, as well as, all military personnel, past and present."

Annex A: Map of the borough wide additional licensing designation showing the boundary delineated in red

London Borough of Southwark NOTICE OF DESIGNATION OF AN AREA FOR ADDITIONAL LICENSING Section 56, Housing Act 2004 1.

The London Borough of Southwark (“The Council”) in exercise of its powers under section 56 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) hereby designates the entire area of its district, as subject to Additional Licensing as described at paragraph 4. The designation applies to all Houses in Multiple Occupation (“HMOs’’) as described at paragraph 5

CITATION, COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION 2.

This designation will be known as The London Borough of Southwark Designation of an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation 2022. The Designation is made on 28 October 2021 and shall come into force on 1 March 2022.

The designation shall cease to have effect on 1 March 2027 (not more than five years) or earlier if the Authority revokes the scheme under section 84 of the Act.

AREA TO WHICH THE DESIGNATION APPLIES 4.

This designation shall apply to the entire area of the London Borough of Southwark as delineated in red on the map in annex A below.

APPLICATION OF THE DESIGNATION 5.

The designation applies to all Houses in Multiple Occupation (“HMOs’’) as defined by section 254 of the Act that are occupied by 3 or more persons comprising 2 or more households as defined in Annex B, within the area described at paragraph 1 unless: a. the house is an HMO that falls within the nationally prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed as a ‘mandatory HMO’ under section 55(2)(a) Part 2 of the Act1 ; b. the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; c. the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 62 of the Act; d. The house is an HMO that is a building or part of a building that is not an HMO for the purposes of licensing under Part 2 of the Act2 as defined in Annex C/ Schedule 14 of the Act; or. e. it is a building converted into self-contained flats but does not meet the standards of conversion required by the Building Regulations 1991, and where less than two thirds of the flats are owner occupied to which Section 257 of the Housing Act 2004 applies where: the building or part of a building is of three or more storeys that have been converted into three or more self-contained flats and where both the building and self-contained flats it contains are under the same ownership or considered by the council to be effectively under the same control.

EFFECT OF THE DESIGNATION 6.

Subject to sub paragraphs 5(a) to (e) above, every HMO of the description specified in that paragraph in the area specified in paragraph 4 shall be required to be licensed under section 61 of the Act.

The designation falls within a description of designations in relation to which the Secretary of State has issued a General Approval under section 58 of the Act, namely, The Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses of Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2015 which came into force on 1 April 2015.

8.

The London Borough of Southwark will comply with the notification requirements contained in Section 29 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act.3

Any person who operates a licensable property without a licence or allows a licensed property to be occupied by more households or persons other than as authorised by a licence, is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction is liable to an unlimited fine. A person who breaches a condition of a licence is liable upon summary conviction to a maximum fine of £5,000 per breach.

Buildings controlled or managed by a co-operative society (1) A building where— (a) The person managing or having control of it is a co-operative society whose rules are such as to secure that each of the conditions set out in sub-paragraph (2) is met, and (b) No person who occupies premises in the building does so by virtue of an assured tenancy, a secure tenancy or a protected tenancy.

A part of a building meets the self-contained flat test if— (a) It consists of a self-contained flat; and (b) Paragraphs (b) to (f) of standard test definition above apply (reading references to the living accommodation concerned as references to the flat).

A building or a part of a building meets the converted building test if— (a) It is a converted building; (b) It contains one or more units of living accommodation that do not consist of a self-contained flat or flats (whether or not it also contains any such flat or flats); (c) The living accommodation is occupied by persons who do not form a single household4; (d) The living accommodation is occupied by those persons as their only or main residence or they are to be treated as so occupying it5; (e) Their occupation of the living accommodation constitutes the only use of that accommodation; and (f) Rents are payable or other consideration is to be provided in respect of at least one of those persons' occupation of the living accommodation.

“Basic amenities” means— (a) A toilet, (b) Personal washing facilities, or (c) Cooking facilities

(2) The conditions are — (a) That membership of the society is restricted to persons who are occupiers or prospective occupiers of buildings managed or controlled by the society, (b) That all management decisions of the society are made by the members (or a specified quorum of members) at a general meeting which all members are entitled to, and invited to, attend, (c) That each member has equal voting rights at such a meeting, and (d) That, if a person occupies premises in the building and is not a member, that person is an occupier of the premises only as a result of sharing occupation of them with a member at the member's invitation.

(3) For the purposes of sub-paragraph (a) “co-operative society” means a body that— (a) Is registered as a co-operative society under the 2014 Act or is a pre-commencement society (within the meaning of that Act) that meets the condition in section 2(2)(a)(i) of that Act, and (b) Is neither— (i) A non-profit registered provider of social housing, nor (ii) Registered as a social landlord under Part 1 of the Housing Act 1996.

(4) In this paragraph— - “the 2014 Act” means the Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014;] - “assured tenancy” has the same meaning as in Part 1 of the Housing Act 1988; - “protected tenancy” has the same meaning as in the Rent Act 1977; - “secure tenancy” has the same meaning as in Part 4 of the Housing Act 1985.]

Buildings regulated otherwise than under this Act Any building whose occupation is regulated otherwise than by or under this Act and which is of a description specified for the purposes of this paragraph in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.

“Converted building” means a building or part of a building consisting of living accommodation in which one or more units of such accommodation have been created since the building or part was constructed;

Buildings occupied by students (1) Any building— (a) which is occupied solely or principally by persons who occupy it for the purpose of undertaking a full-time course of further or higher education at a specified educational establishment or at an educational establishment of a specified description, and (b) where the person managing or having control of it is the educational establishment in question or a specified person or a person of a specified description.

“Enactment” includes an enactment comprised in subordinate legislation (within the meaning of the Interpretation Act 1978 (c. 30);

(2) In sub-paragraph (a) “specified” means specified for the purposes of this paragraph in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.

“Self-contained flat” means a separate set of premises (whether or not on the same floor)— (a) which forms part of a building; (b) either the whole or a material part of which lies above or below some other part of the building; and (c) in which all three basic amenities are available for the exclusive use of its occupants

(3) Sub-paragraph (4) applies in connection with any decision by the appropriate national authority as to whether to make, or revoke, any regulations specifying— (a) A particular educational establishment, or (b) A particular description of educational establishments.

HMO declarations If a local housing authority are satisfied that a building or part of a building in their area meets either: - the standard test; or - the self-contained flat test; or - the converted building test they may serve a notice under section 255 (an “HMO declaration”) declaring the building or part to be a house in multiple occupation.

(4) The appropriate national authority may have regard to the extent to which, in its opinion— (a) the management by or on behalf of the establishment in question of any building or buildings occupied for connected educational purposes is in conformity with any code of practice for the time being approved under section 233 which appears to the authority to be relevant, or (b) the management of such buildings by or on behalf of establishments of the description in question is in general in conformity with any such code of practice, as the case may be.

Annex C: Buildings which are not HMOs for purposes of this designation In the following paragraphs “building” includes a part of a building.

(5) In sub-paragraph (4) “occupied for connected educational purposes”, in relation to a building managed by or on behalf of an educational establishment, means occupied solely or principally by persons who occupy it for the purpose of undertaking a full-time course of further or higher education at the establishment.

Buildings controlled or managed by public sector bodies etc A building where the person managing or having control of it is (a) a local housing authority, (b) a non-profit registered provider of social housing, (c) a body which is registered as a social landlord under Part 1 of the Housing Act 1996, (d) a police and crime commissioner, (e) the Mayor's Office for Policing and Crime, (f) a fire and rescue authority, or (g) a health service body [within the meaning of section 9 of the National Health Service Act 2006]. “fire and rescue authority” means a fire and rescue authority under the Fire and Rescue Services Act 2004 A building— (a) Which is social housing within the meaning of Part 2 of the Housing and Regeneration Act 2008, and (b) Where the person managing or having control of it is a profit-making registered provider of social housing.]

For the definition of “persons not forming a single household” please see Section 258 of the Housing Act 2004 5 For the definition of “persons treated as occupying premises as main or only residence” please see Section 259 of the Housing Act 2004

Buildings occupied by owners Any building which is occupied only by persons within the following paragraphs— (a) one or more persons who have, whether in the whole or any part of it, either the freehold estate or a leasehold interest granted for a term of more than 21 years; (b) any member of the household of such a person or persons; (c) No more than such number of other persons as is specified for the purposes of this paragraph in regulations made by the appropriate national authority.6 (d) This paragraph does not apply in the case of a converted block of flats to which section 257 applies, except for the purpose of determining the status of any flat in the block.

Buildings occupied by two persons Any building which is occupied only by two persons who form two households.

The number of persons specified for the purposes of paragraph (C) under ‘buildings occupied by owners’ in The Licensing and Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Other Houses (Miscellaneous Provisions) (England) Regulations 2006 is two.

The London Borough of Southwark (“The Council”) in exercise of its powers under section 80 of the Housing Act 2004 ("the Act") hereby designates for selective licensing the areas described in paragraph 5

CITATION, COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION 2.

These 2 Designations shall be known as the London Borough of Southwark Designations for Areas for Selective Licensing 2022. All privately rented residential accommodation situated within the designated areas must be licensed with the Council unless subject to statutory exemption as set out in paragraph 5.

3.

The Designations are made on 28 October 2021 and will come into force on 1 March 2022. In line with the Housing Act 2004: Licensing of Houses in Multiple Occupation and Selective Licensing of Other Residential Accommodation (England) General Approval 2015 and the updated guidance issued by the Department for Communities and Local Government in March 2015 (Selective licensing in the private rented sector - A Guide for local authorities), the Designations fall within a description of designations for which, as long as the authority has consulted for at least ten weeks, do not need approval from the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) as the designated areas cover 20% or less than the total geographical area of the London Borough of Southwark’s and includes 20% or less than its private rented properties.

4.

The Designations shall cease to have effect on 1 March 2027 (not more than 5 years) or earlier if the Council revokes the scheme under section 84 of the Act.

AREA TO WHICH THE DESIGNATION APPLIES 5.

This designations shall apply to the following areas of the London Borough of Southwark.

Designation 1 is delineated in red with the area itself coloured yellow on the map and Designation 2 is delineated in red with the area itself coloured orange on the map both in annex A below. The following wards are included in each designation.

APPLICATION OF THE DESIGNATION 6.

This designation applies to any house1 which is let or occupied under a tenancy or licence within the area described in paragraph 5 unless: a. the house is a house in multiple occupation [HMO] that falls within the nationally prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed as a ‘mandatory HMO’ under section 55(2)(a) Part 2 of the Act2; b. the house is a house in multiple occupation that falls within the prescribed category of HMO that is required to be licensed under the London Borough of Southwark Designation of an Area for Additional Licensing of Houses of Multiple Occupation made on 1 January 2022 under Section 56 of the Housing Act 20043; c. the tenancy or licence of the house has been granted by a registered social landlord4; d. the house is subject to an Interim or Final Management Order under Part 4 of the Act; e. the house is subject to a temporary exemption under section 86 of the Act; or f. the house is occupied under a tenancy or licence which is exempt under the Act or the occupation is of a building or part of a building so exempt as defined in Paragraph 5(f): Exempted tenancies or licences, Selective Licensing of Houses (Specified Exemptions) (England) Order 2006 SI 370/2006.

EFFECT OF THE DESIGNATION 6. Subject to sub paragraphs 6(a) to (f) every house in the area specified in paragraph 5 that is occupied under a tenancy or licence shall be required to be licensed under section 85 of the Act.6 7. The London Borough of Southwark will comply with the notification requirements contained in section 83 of the Act and shall maintain a register of all houses registered under this designation, as required under section 232 of the Act.5 If you are a landlord, managing agent or a tenant, or if you require information regarding this designation, or to apply for a licence, further information and assistance is available from the Council’s Private Rented Property Licensing Team by telephone on 020 7525 3114 or by email to resi@southwark.gov.uk, or by writing to Private Sector Housing Enforcement Service, PO Box 70063, Queens Road, London, SE15 2HP. Any person who operates a licensable property without a licence or allows a licensed property to be occupied by more households or persons other than as authorised by a licence, is liable to prosecution and upon summary conviction is liable to an unlimited fine. A person who breaches a condition of a licence is liable upon summary conviction to a maximum fine of £5,000 per breach.

(allowing all vehicles to turn right between the hours of 10.30am – 11.30am)

Coach ‘proud’ of trio after Alliance Nationals

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk LYNN ABC had three fighters in action in the Alliance England National Finals in Hayes, Middlesex last weekend, coming away with two wins and a loss.

Cyrus Donaldson competed in the youth under-57kg category against Jake Palmer from Alma ABC. Donaldson boxed well for all four rounds with his very elusive style making it difficult for Palmer to land any clean shots. Donaldson won the bout with a unanimous points decision.

Next between the ropes was James Omoniyi who was in the junior novices at under-75kg. He boxed Charlie Brown from Epsom & Ewell.

It was a fiercely-fought contest over three rounds. Brown was a strong and competent opponent but Omoniyi used his ring craft and skill to clearly land the cleaner punches. He had a very good third round which got him over the line and the win by a majority decision.

Romero Johnson was fighting in the under-57kg junior novices against Dave Thomas from Honour Oak. Unfortunately for Johnson, Thomas’s aggressive style was what caught the judges’ eyes and ultimately got him the win.

Terry Pearson paid tribute to his fighters and to Lynn coaching colleague Elwin Ollivierre.

Pearson said: “I am proud of all three boys. They did the club proud and to have two national champions this early in the season is great for the club.

“I also need to thank Elwin Ollivierre, our junior coach, who does great work with all our junior boxers season after season.”

London Olympians tap into surge in NFL interest Head coach: ‘privilege’ to be part of opening of new Southwark Park facilities

The club teamed up with Everyone Active Sports and Leisure

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SOUTHWARK-BASED British American Football Club The London Olympians joined forces with Everyone Active Sports and Leisure to celebrate the opening of brand-new facilities at Southwark Park last weekend ahead of the 2022 British American Football season.

Players and coaches from the club invited local residents in Southwark to try the sport for the very first time, put on the kit and learn about the game through two fully-booked taster sessions. The aim was to open up access to an exciting sport that is growing quickly at grassroots level in the UK. “It is such a privilege to be a part of the

opening of the all-new Southwark Sports and Athletic Centre,” London Olympians head coach Tariq Ayub said. “This is a great opportunity for the London Olympians to showcase American Football to the local community and get athletes of all ages excited about the sport.”

In addition to the senior team (19+ years), The London Olympians were joined on the day by the Junior London Renegades American Football Club (10-18 years), who are also based in south London. They also offer young athletes from across the city the chance to engage with the sport at an early age and set on a pathway to the senior game and potentially the GB national squad, Europe and beyond.

Stans rebound from first defeat with Sutton win

By Sport Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD GOT back to winning ways after suffering their first defeat of the season with a 2-1 away victory against SCEFL First Division promotion rivals Sutton Athletic last weekend.

On a blustery day and with the wind at their backs, Sutton started the game on the front foot, but didn’t test Charlie Cottrell in the Stansfeld goal early on.

However, they were handed the initiative by the visitors in the 22nd minute after a foul in the penalty area to give Dan Gunner the chance to convert from the spot and put his side in front .

of the two sides going into the break, though they couldn’t drag themselves level.

Stansfeld started the second half much stronger than they had the first, playing aggressive, front-foot football with Sutton struggling to get out their own half.

It took them just five minutes to equalise when Joe Minter regained possession after his corner had been cleared to swing in a cross for Billy Parkinson to head home at the far post.

Stansfeld continued to press looking for the winner. Quick thinking from Cottrell released Ollie Milton. He ran directly at the opposition to cross for Rob Hughes whose header was saved but he reacted to knock home the loose ball.

Sutton were forced to come out and try and look for an equaliser but Stansfeld defended well and were always a threat

on the break.

Stansfeld are top of the table with 33 points from fourteen games, two points ahead of Tooting Bec. Man of the match: Macey Malyon Stansfeld Reserves’ eight-game unbeaten run came to an end, as they lost 3-2 at home to Club Langley.

Stansfeld 3rds progressed into the next round of the KJC, winning 1-0 away at West Wickham.

Stansfeld 4ths’ fine form continued with a 3-2 away at Welling United Deaf.

Menace hit Fantastic Four

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DAVID GABOR scored twice as Peckham Town thrashed Hawkinge Town 4-0 in their Kent County Football League Premier Division clash at The Menace Arena last weekend.

Kieran Dowding gave Mary Phillip’s side the lead two minutes before the break against their promotion rivals.

Gabor made it 2-0 in the 48th minute and added another eight minutes later.

Peckham didn’t let up and Kevin Dance got in on the scoring act in the 61st minute. George Legg in the home goal was rarely called into action.

Peckham are top of the table with 27 points from eleven games.

Assistant manager and club chairman Bryan Hall said: “The

boys done alright. Hawkinge were a tough side. They’ve recently had a managerial change, so everybody lifts themselves when that happens.

“I was expecting a tough game, but we more than matched them, and we took over. The rest is history.”

Southwark News, Thursday November 11 2021 johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AFTER THREE defeats to start the season, Millwall Lionesses made it seven consecutive wins with their 3-1 victory over Dartford at St Paul’s last weekend.

Amy Nash and Chloe Burr scored in the first half and Molly Hawkins added a third with nine minutes left to lift Millwall up to third in the London & South East Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division table.

The Lionesses started slowly and Dartford had the ball in the net early on only for an offside flag to spare the hosts.

Goalkeeper Chrissie Wiggins had already denied the Darts and Milan Shakespeare-Simms was then in the right place to head off another threatening attack from the hosts.

Jack Wheeler’s side took the lead against the run of play in the nineteenth minute when Nash curled in a corner that went directly into the net.

There was little fortune involved in Millwall’s second of the afternoon in the 28th minute. Alyssa Miranda played a brilliant first-time ball into the box from the left and Burr superbly lobbed home.

The Lionesses again started the second half slowly and this time were made to pay as Dartford pulled a goal back through Emily Vaughn.

Millwall tightened up but the visitors were still a threat from set-pieces and had chances to force an equaliser.

But the hosts ensured they would take all three points from the clash when substitute Hawkins scored at the second attempt after her first effort had been saved.

Only Fulham in second, who like Millwall are on fifteen points from eight games but with a plus-20 better goal difference, and runaway leaders Ashford Town, who have 22 points, are above the Lionesses in the table.

Five of the Lionesses’ wins in their current streak have come under Wheeler.

“Really pleased with the performance of the girls, they really dug in,” Wheeler told reporter Eamonn Barclay after the game. “It wasn’t necessarily about playing too much football, it was more about doing what we needed to do, especially after

Millwall continue winning streak ahead of south London FA Cup derby Lionesses captain Libby Stubbs going 2-0 up at half-time, and seeing the game out.

“I thought they put in a professional performance. They all stuck together and got the three points, which is a massive three points against a very good Dartford team. They’ve always been up around the top of the league, it shows the potential we’ve got here

at Millwall Lionesses.”

Emily Stanley spoke recently about how the side have improved since Wheeler took charge.

She said: “I think the main factor is the mentality of the team. When [current assistant] Alex Russell and [goalkeeping coach] Greg Mcalinney took over [as caretakers] they changed

the atmosphere with the team and Jack has reinforced that positivity and togetherness.

“We’re so gelled as a team we just want to win for each other.

“I think that our confidence is building but we’re not arrogant about how well we’re playing. We’re focusing on improving as a team and,

right now, we’re the underdogs – but everyone loves a good underdog story.”

It wasn’t all doom and gloom,

however. A ten-mile walk from St Paul’s to Chislehurst that was organised by Fisher FC Community and The Proper Blokes Club aimed to highlight the issue of men’s health and raise money for charity.

Fisher boss Ajay Ashanike thanked those who participated in the walk and paid tribute to Glebe.

He said: “Hands down best Glebe side [we] have ever faced. Man for man today they were at it.

“Full respect to what they are doing and how they play the right way “Thank you to all the fans that walked today. Should be proud of yourselves.”

The result left Fisher thirteenth in the SCEFL Premier Division table with sixteen points from fourteen games.

Glebe are third.

Ex-Millwall striker torments Fish – but charity walk a success

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER SLUMPED to a 3-0 defeat to Glebe at Foxbury Avenue last weekend – after the hosts played for more than an hour with an outfield player in goal.

The Fish fell behind in just the second minute when Aaron Watson – who had scored after twelve seconds the previous game – turned Luke Thomas on the right side of the penalty area before his deflected shot went in.

It took Fisher a quarter of an hour to get into the game with left-winger Courtney Swaby a threat but his deep cross just evaded Malaki Coker coming in from the right.

Fisher goalkeeper Dan Carpanini saved a shot from Jamie Philpot before Sam Fitzgerald was booked for pulling back the former Millwall striker.

Philpot wasn’t going to be denied for long, however, as in the 27th minute he brilliantly played in Lauris Chin who dinked the ball over Carpanini.

Millwall regularly dropping points against struggling teams at home in recent seasons. Previously, it’s been the likes of Burton, Barnsley, and Wigan and you can now add Derby to that list.

It’s a little under eleven months since the Rams did a job on Millwall and claimed a 1-0 victory at The Den in front of the returning Lions fans last December.

On this occasion, far more than 2,000 were in attendance. In fact, this was the biggest crowd of the season, although Gary Rowett’s side didn’t exactly give much in return to those turning out in their numbers.

In their previous two home matches, Millwall played poorly in the first half, but produced impressive rescue acts to beat Stoke and squeeze past Reading.

But giving teams a head-start is unlikely to be sustainable and Rowett said post-match the Lions have to find a way to make better starts.

The Millwall boss probably didn’t expect his side to give Derby a helping hand but that’s exactly what Jake Cooper did just before half-time.

Cooper’s ability to play out from the back has come on leaps and bounds under Rowett, but he took one too many chances on the edge of his own box and was robbed by Sam Baldock.

The Rams striker’s improvised backheel allowed Tom Lawrence to put it on a plate for Festy Ebosele to slide past Bartosz Bialkowski at the near right post.

Frustrations had been growing among the home faithful and they were probably close to boiling point following that opener.

Fortunately for the Lions, their immediate response ensured that the expected boos at half-time were avoided.

In the final action of the half, Millwall broke forward and Jed Wallace, so often the creator, registered his tenth goal involvement of the season, releasing Scott Malone, who controlled and hammered into the bottom-right corner before wheeling away to celebrate and cup his ear to the supporters of the club he left for the Lions.

It was a rare moment of quality, but based on Millwall’s first-half showing, one they didn’t deserve.

That goal gave the Lions the boost they so badly needed, and they started the second half with a real willingness and intent.

But Wallace’s miss when one-on-one with Kelle Roos soon after the interval continue the tone for what was to be a frustrating afternoon for the hosts, who were heading towards a seventh draw of the season.

On that occasion, Wallace wasn’t able to beat the Derby goalkeeper, but even when Millwall did beat Roos, George Saville failed to find the back of the net, with his curling effort going past the far post after Mason Bennett

But it’s Lions fans showing frustrations after final whistle and Wallace had combined expertly to fashion a chance for the midfielder.

It was exactly the type of opportunity that we’ve so often seen Saville bury in a Millwall shirt, but since returning to SE16 for a fourth time, they just haven’t been going in as regularly.

Wallace should have claimed another assist soon after. This time, he cut back on to this favoured right foot and put one on a plate for Benik Afobe. Unfortunately for Millwall, the on-loan Stoke striker couldn’t sort his feet out and ended up missing his kick when it appeared easier to score.

Afobe would sort his feet out late on from another Wallace centre, but his acrobatic bicycle-kick effort didn’t have enough power to worry Roos, who easily palmed to safety.

By that point, Derby were playing with ten men following Nathan Byrne’s dismissal for a foul on Bennett resulting in second booking.

But for all Millwall’s chances, Wayne Rooney actually felt his side did enough to collect a rare three points and while that was a bit of a stretch from the Rams manager, Byrne’s sending-off certainly didn’t stop Derby from believing they could collect just a second away win all season.

In fact, there were even periods in the second half when the visitors looked the likelier to win the game.

But while Bialkowski could have possibly done better for Ebosele’s

opener, he more than made amends with two sharp stops in quick succession from Baldock and Jason Knight as Derby kept piling forward despite Millwall’s numerical advantage.

The last two times the Lions have faced ten men, they eventually came up with the goods, scoring late winners against Blackpool and Sheffield United.

But despite Tom Bradshaw, Matt

Smith and Sheyi Ojo all coming on late in the game, there would be no late flourish this time for Rowett’s men, who were greeted with some boos at full-time, which was slightly harsh considering their improvements after the break.

It might be a hard watch at times, but the Lions continue to move in the right direction under Rowett and head into the international break just one point off the play-offs.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IF ANY young player is struggling to deal with being released by a club as a teenager, they should listen to Dan Moss.

Moss, 21, was let go by Burnley after a decade in their ranks despite winning a scholar of the year award while at Turf Moor.

Circumstances around every release differ, of course, not just in the processes in place to help players find a way back into the game but also the structures to support them outside of football. Some are more fortunate that others.

But the way Moss mentions “learning experiences” more than once during this interview tells you he was wellequipped to deal with rejection.

There is also a big element of fortune involved in players finding other clubs. Moss was lucky that Millwall representatives were at the same table as ones from Burnley at the scholar awards in London and were looking for a right-back.

Even when those things fall into place, the right approach helps. Rather than feeling pressure, Moss told himself to enjoy the experience on trial with the Lions after his Clarets setback.

“It was a shock to the system because I had been in Burnley’s academy for a long time. I’d never really experienced being released before,” Moss tells the News. “[Millwall] were sitting at the same table as Burnley’s staff so they asked who was Burnley’s scholar of the year.

They got into a conversation about me and Millwall were looking for a rightback for the under-23s at the time.

“I only found out about Millwall at the start of the summer, before the holidays, so I had an idea. I kept fit and everything and then found out I was going on trial in pre-season.

“It was a strange one, really.

Obviously you’re a bit nervous but I was just excited more than anything.

My main idea was to enjoy it and go from there.

“Just enjoying myself and enjoying football brought out the best in me, in a way, where I was relaxed and could show what I could do.

“I didn’t really think of it as a lastchance moment or anything. I felt it was an opportunity.

“I spent three weeks on trial in the end training and I played three or four full 90 minutes. Then Kevin Nugent pulled me aside and said, ‘we’ll be offering you a deal’.

“I was buzzing about that, it was good news to share. It all worked out perfectly in the end.”

Moss joined in the summer of 2019 and went on to captain Nugent’s under-23 side. He signed a new deal in the summer before heading out on a season-long loan to Yeovil, where he has become a regular in Darren Sarll’s team.

“I’ve played every game so far at rightback,” Moss continues. “During my time at Burnley I played in a few different positions. During my scholarship I was centre-mid, centre-back when I was a bit younger.

“But I’ve found myself at right-back now and I’m enjoying it. You get a bit of everything in that position.

“It suits my game, I’ve got a lot of energy and good fitness to get up and down and join in with everything I can.

“But I’m loving every minute of it, it’s a very good learning curve. I’m really, really enjoying it.”

Off the pitch, Moss has also had to learn quickly.

He explains: “I moved into a players’ house, there are four of us here. At Millwall I was in digs with a host family.

It sounds silly but they would sort your food out and if you’re lucky like I was they sort out your washing so you don’t have to do so much around the house!

“But in the players’ house you have to sort out your cooking, washing-up, your clothes washing. That was the biggest shock of all! But you soon get into the swing of things.

“The lads are all part of the first-team

squad. They’re top lads so it’s been really enjoyable.

“It’s my first senior loan and it’s just about getting to grips with everything, living so far away from home.

“It’s just a massive life learning experience. I’m taking it all in my stride.

“I’ve had a few phone calls with Kevin Nugent and [assistant manager] Paul Robinson from the 23s. My games get sent to them, they watch them and we’ll have a chat on the phone. It’s just a bit of everything on the call to check in and see how I am.

“We’ll go over all the football side of things and we also have a little chat at the end about how it is living on your own, cooking your own food.

“Me and Nuge have had a few chats on what to cook! My go-to is a stir-fry but the boys here are a bit bored of that now so I’ll have to start adding a few dishes to my menu.”

Moss has Danny McNamara as an example to follow of another rightback who worked his way up the loan ladder and into Millwall’s first team.

Senior boss Gary Rowett has said every loan is with a view to the player eventually challenging to get into his team.

That is encouragement for Moss.

“Definitely, it’s something you’re working for,” he says. “That’s the aim at the end of the day, to get into your club’s first team.

“Every day is a learning experience so you’ve got to take it all on board.

“I look at [McNamara’s] journey, he went on a few loans and each time he stepped up another level and then he got his chance in the Millwall first team.

“It’s something you look up to and you hope it will happen to you one day.

I’m just taking each day as it comes and trying to improve as a player every

week.

“We played eight games in October so that was something totally new to the system, it’s just game after game after game, but I’m loving it.

“It can only be good for me. It’s a totally different games programme to the under-23s. It’s been a bit tough on the legs at times but you get though it and you look forward to the next game every time.”

It’s pointed out to Moss that he appears to have the character needed to succeed.

“It’s just speaking with experienced people at Millwall and just even family as well,” he modestly replies. “At the end of the day, just enjoy it, it’s a good opportunity and you know you’ve got what it takes to play in [National League].

“I’ve always just had that in me to fight, whatever comes at me, to get through it.”

Lions progressing in several metrics – but still leaving some people unsatisfied

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S DRAW against Derby County last Saturday was their seventeenth league game of the season and thirteenth in which they haven’t been beaten.

Gary Rowett’s side have lost just two of their last thirteen matches in the Championship and have won five of their last eight.

The Lions have come from behind to claim points in five games. Fans are back and they have seen their side win three games with goals in the 89th, 90th and 92nd minutes.

If he meant it, Jed Wallace has already scored the goal of the season, his shot from wide on the right touchline against Sheffield United in the 2-1 win at Bramall Lane. He started the campaign by opening the scoring with a 25-yard belter in the sunshine at Loftus Road.

At this point in the last two seasons Millwall were tenth and seventeenth.

Millwall are three points off fifth place as we approach halfway through the season next month.

So, to borrow a line, are you not entertained?

The answer at the moment seems to be, ‘meh, not really’.

That can partly be explained by the kind of football Millwall play, but what would you expect?

This was never going to be a side that was going to play neat, pretty football, all triangles and different angles of passing around the pitch.

Millwall know what they are and they are staying true to it. In Rowett’s preferred 5-2-3 formation, they are mostly a counter-attacking team with three muscular centre-backs who are a threat from set-pieces, and one attacking wing-back in Scott Malone with usually a more conservative option on the other flank.

The midfielders’ main job is to screen in front and then, usually George Saville, try to arrive in the box for crosses and cutbacks as Saville did well against the Rams only to fail to find the target.

Up front, Millwall have the brilliance of Wallace and the promise of Sheyi Ojo. If

Mason Bennett could stay fit we know he can be an explosive player who in the second half of last season regularly added goals to his game.

It might sound harsh on Benik Afobe, Matt Smith and Tom Bradshaw but the central striking position remains an issue.

Millwall’s top-scoring centre-forward this season is Afobe with three. Smith and Bradshaw have a pair of goals each.

You have to scroll down a long way to see where that puts them in the chart. A lot further than joint-nineteenth, where the Lions’ top-scorer this season Wallace is with five.

Rowett tried to address that last season by bringing in Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore on loan from Tottenham and West

Bromwich Albion. Neither worked, the latter failing to score before going back to Spurs in January and Zohore netting just three times.

Afobe and Ojo arrived in the summer on loan deals from Stoke and Liverpool and while they are bright, positive players the output hasn’t quite been there yet.

Ojo has two assists so far but needs to be more of a goal threat.

Another problem has been how Millwall have started games. It’s as if they have been feeling out opponents, skulking around the ring throwing out the odd jab. They haven’t taken the lead in the first half of a league game at The Den this season.

Rowett said after they came from

behind in the second half to beat Stoke City 2-1 that they “thrived on the chaos”.

Fans would ask, so why can’t we do that all the time?

The answer is a team can’t come out from the first whistle with whirling arms and throwing haymakers. They will eventually be picked off. It’s much easier to inject some chaos into the game when you’re into the second half, already behind and essentially with nothing to lose. There has to be more control but it’s balancing that with what this team are good at: getting after teams and getting the fans at The Den behind them and unsettling the opposition.

The other factor in the tetchiness in some home games could be down to how

long supporters were away. They came back last season, though only for two games with capacities capped at 2,000.

Then they were gone again as the UK entered yet another lockdown.

There is therefore perhaps some impatience, willing their team to make up for their lost time watching on iFollow or catching up with highlights shows.

Then there is simply raised expectations. Millwall have finished eighth and eleventh under Rowett and the manager has not shied away from saying he demands a top-six challenge.

Well, that’s what they are delivering at the moment, and if they can maintain that deep into the season then there shouldn’t be too many complaints.

Five Lions loanees through to FA Cup second round

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MAHLON ROMEO got an assist to help Portsmouth edge out Harrow Borough in the first round of the FA Cup at Fratton Park last Saturday.

Romeo set up Marcus Harness in the 28th minute for the only goal against Southern League Premier South side Harrow.

Sutton United also edged past another Southern League Premier South team, Hayes & Yeading, 1-0 away.

Isaac Olaofe played 68 minutes as Will Randall scored for League Two Sutton against the seventh-tier side with nineteen minutes left.

There was a third Lions loanee in action against a Southern League Premier South side, but there were no problems for Yeovil

Town at Yate Town.

Dan Moss played right-back for the Glovers in their 5-0 win. Matthew Worthington, Charlie Wakefield and Dale Gorman scored in the first half.

Adi Yussuf and Sonny Blu Lo-Everton added two more by the 62nd minute before Moss went close to his first goal in senior football nine minutes later with a first-time shot.

Yeovil are back in National League action this Saturday against Eastleigh at Huish Park.

Attacker Jayden Davis also had his first taste of first-round proper FA Cup action as National League King’s Lynn Town lost narrowly at home to League Two Walsall.

The Saddlers went through after Brendan Kiernan’s fifteenth-minute goal.

King’s Lynn host Wrexham in the league

this Saturday.

Arthur Penney scored his first goal in senior football but it wasn’t enough in the 95th minute as National League South wide Welling United lost 2-1 at Bath City.

Elliott Frear in the 64th minute and Alex Fletcher five minutes from time were the hosts’ goal-scorers.

Defender Penney earned praise from boss Peter Taylor after the game. “Arthur is doing exceptionally well,” Taylor said.

“We’re very, very pleased with him.”

Welling are fifteenth and host seventeenth-place Tonbridge Angels at Park View Road on Saturday.

Also in National League South, goalkeeper Ryan Sandford made his debut for Maidstone United but they still haven’t won since September after a 1-0 home defeat to Slough Town.

Warren Harris headed past Sandford with twelve minutes left.

Eighth-place Maidstone go to Havant & Waterlooville this weekend.

In the Scottish Premiership last weekend, defender Hayden Muller helped St Johnstone to a second consecutive clean sheet in their 0-0 draw at home to St Mirren.

Muller played the full game on the right side of a back three in Callum Davidson’s side. The Saints are ninth and next in action against Celtic at Parkhead on November 20.

Junior Tiensia played the full game for Dover Athletic as they lost 4-1 away to Southend last Tuesday. Dover’s next National League game is a trip to Torquay on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Alex Mitchell wasn’t involved

as Leyton Orient edged out Ebbsfleet United 1-0 in the first round of the FA Cup. The draw for the second round was made on Monday night. Romeo’s Portsmouth will host League Two Harrogate Town.

Moss’s Yeovil Town will be at home to League One MK Dons or League Two Stevenage.

Olaofe will have an away trip with League Two Sutton United to League One Oxford United or League Two rival Bristol Rovers.

Mitchell will hope to be involved in an all-League Two clash as Leyton Orient host Tranmere Rovers at Brisbane Road.

Tyler Burey is set to return to action for League Two Hartlepool United this month. Pools play League One Wycombe Wanderers in their first-round replay next week. A trip to League One Lincoln City awaits the winners.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett believes his players deserve credit for where the Lions are in the league – but acknowledges they need to improve their starts to games.

Millwall are ninth more than a third of the way into the season, a point off sixth and just three points off fifth.

The Championship is living up to its billing as a competitive, unpredictable league, with just seven points from sixth place to nineteenth. Coventry are fourth, while big-hitters such as Sheffield United and Cardiff City are in the bottom eight.

There is one stand-out statistic that shows where the Lions have major

room for improvement: Rowett’s side have yet to take the lead in the first half of a league game at home this season.

In nine Championship games at The Den this campaign, they have only gone in front three times, winning twice 1-0 and drawing 1-1.

The flip-side of that is their ability to bounce back after going behind in SE16, as they did in beating Blackpool and Stoke and drawing with Coventry and Derby.

Those first-half struggles have contributed to tense atmospheres at The Den. Rowett said recently the stadium feels “edgy”, but he understands the need for his side to play more front-foot football early on and acknowledged how good the home fans are when their team gives them something to get behind.

“Certainly in the first half of games we haven’t performed as well as we would

have liked. I’m sure that’s probably not helped necessarily,” Rowett said.

“We know how good our fans and our support is, we’re one of those clubs that has a real edge about our atmosphere.

“The atmosphere can be so intimidating and electrifying. The start of the game against Derby, after the commemoration, the atmosphere was electric.

“It’s so important to the team. The fans can help push the team on so, so much. We’re very lucky that we’re one of those teams that we almost get that extra man with our fans because they’re so passionate.

“It’s frustrating for us when we don’t perform, when we’re trying so hard – we’re all a little bit frustrated.

“What I would say is that whenever we perform well, ie in the second half of the game at home, our fans

have pushed us on to win. That’s the difference.

“I suppose as a manager I’m selfish, I kind of want that all the time because I know how much it helps. But I’m also realistic to know that we have to perform to get that. And we haven’t performed as well as we would have liked at the start of games and I’m sure as well as fans would have liked.

“But we are working really hard, I can assure people of that. We changed formation a couple of times, we’ve changed the way we do things. We are trying to start a little bit better at home.

“But certainly the players have got to be given a lot of credit for the way they have turned games around and some of the second-half atmospheres have been excellent.”

Former Oxford United, Northampton and Sheffield United boss Wilder replaced Neil Warnock, who left after the 1-1 draw at West Bromwich Albion last Saturday. Boro are fourteenth in the league.

Wilder led the Blades from League One to the Premier League but left last March with the side bottom of the table in their second season back in the top flight with fourteen points from 28 games.

Wilder knows that despite Boro’s

current position he will be expected to challenge for promotion this season.

“I’ve got to climb another mountain, that’s what it’s all about,” Wilder said in his first press conference.

“There are some very talented players at the club. It’s about getting to know them, putting the early messages down with staff and players and implementing our ideas as quickly as we possibly can.

“I want us to be aggressive, competitive. I want us to express ourselves, play in the right way, play effective football.

“There are different ways to win a football match, it’s not about being pigeon-holed, I’ll be versatile.

“All I can predict is my teams will

have a right go. If it doesn’t happen, my teams will know about it, and so will you.

“You have to look in the mirror and not out the window. The situation off the pitch is fabulous. We have to win games on it.

“I already know a lot about the players. I’ve done my homework and know a lot about how they go about their business. There are some talented boys in this squad.

I’ve talked about the academy, too, and young lads coming through. The likes of Josh [Coburn] who’s scored two in his last two games.

“The first team has a lot of talented players. There is a core group of talented boys who, on their best day, can mix it with the best in this

division. ”So for me, and my coaching staff, we’ll start to put a bit of a structure in place - out of possession, in possession.

“I think if you put that together we can have a lot of fun and we can go on and produce some positive results.

“I’ve got great people around me here and a passionate fan base and I’m looking forward to engaging with them. There’s no secret, there’s no magic formula, it’s hard work and an ability to get the maximum out of a group of players who are better than the position they’re in.

“People will turn up expecting us to beat Millwall and put a performance on.”

Rowett added: “To a certain degree we’ve made progress again in a season in which the division is very, very competitive. You only have to look down to around 20th, there’s not that much in it.

“But, I’ve spoken about it before, we’ve played a lot better in probably the last ten, twelve games and performed a lot more consistently.

“I still believe there is more to come but I think the players have to be given great credit. We’re into the third season that they’re challenging at the right end of the table.

“We’re in a good position.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett would be interested in a permanent deal for forward Benik Afobe – but acknowledges that could be out of the Lions’ control.

Afobe, 28, is on a season-long loan deal from Championship rivals Stoke City and has scored three Championship goals this season.

Former Wolves and Bournemouth attacker Afobe – who had a previous loan spell with the Lions in 2013 – is a popular member of the dressing room.

Afobe’s contract expires at the end of the season and he is unlikely to be offered a new one by the Potters.

Millwall have signed players on

loan in recent seasons with a view to permanent deals. Of the current squad, Bart Bialkowski, Alex Pearce, Scott Malone, George Saville, Jed Wallace, Jake Cooper and Mason Bennett all joined initially on loan.

Sheyi Ojo falls into the same category as he will likely exit Liverpool next summer.

Rowett knows if loan signings such as Afobe have successful seasons then they will attract interest from elsewhere.

“With our loan players we’ve signed them for different reasons,” Rowett said. “Some are younger players and we’re trying to give them another year’s development and to improve our team at the same time.

“Some players we look at the longer term as well.

“I think anyone that’s done well for us we would always look at the

potential of signing them.

“Whether that’s possible depends because if someone comes and does fantastically well, someone like Benik, if he comes and scores fifteen or 20 goals then it could be very difficult to keep them.

“We’re always open to [a permanent deal] and have that in mind.”

Millwall are close to the end of their first week of their latest two-week break during the international schedule. They travel to Middlesbrough on Saturday week.

The hard work continues at Calmont Road, with Rowett admitting improving the attacking output of his side is one of the priorities.

He said: “We’ve looked at different formations. We started the last two

home games with a back four to try and push an extra body further forward.

“Ironically in both of those games we actually looked much better when we went to a five.

“It’s more about improving how we do things all the time. We want to maintain the defensive strength of the team because that’s always going to be a big part of how we play.

“But also to work on pressing a little bit higher, to work on creating a few more opportunities and taking them. That’s always going to be a factor for us, improving that attacking side of the game where we know we need to score more goals from set-pieces and in open play.

“So we’re always trying to work on that and that won’t change in the international break.”

Ballard went off in the 74th minute of the 1-1 draw with Derby County last weekend after suffering blurred vision following a clash of heads with Rams defender Lee Buchanan.

Centre-back Ballard has also had a knee injury and was getting an injection for that earlier this week.

Ballard was called up by Ian Baraclough along with Lions team-mate George Saville for games against Lithuania on Friday and Italy on Monday in Belfast.

Northern Ireland can’t qualify for Qatar 2022 with two Group C games left.

“Dan’s going to have to go through the concussion protocol anyway,” Rowett said. “But he’s felt okay since.

“He’s had previous knee issues, he’s been managing it quite well. But it’s intermittently limiting him a little bit so we’d agreed with Arsenal to get him an injection. Quite a lot of players have had them which usually means you don’t do anything for three or four days. It helps lubricate the knee a little bit more.

“I’m not sure whether Dan might meet up with Ireland later in the week or not.

Ireland obviously can’t qualify anyway. It might be that he meets up for one of the games or doesn’t meet up at all.

“I’m not quite sure at this moment, it hasn’t quite been decided.”
