How will the budget affect Southwark?

Crucially, there was no reference to the government loan scheme which had been suggested as a possible antidote to leaseholders faced with massive bills for cladding works - such as residents of Oyster Court in Walworth, who last month were landed with a £2.6 billion bill.

While the chancellor did introduce a new tax on developers’ profits to help fund cladding works, a statement from Mayor of London Sadiq Khan argued that the amount this would raise fell well short of the total amount needed to deal with the crisis.

charles@southwarknews.co.uk While the 2021 government budget announcement last week addresses some of the needs of Southwark Council, councillors warn that it will not be enough to meet the evolving needs of Londoners.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak unveiled his much-anticipated budget for 2021 on Wednesday, October 27.

However, the budget leaves unanswered questions about the growing crisis of adult social care and fails to meet many of the recommendations made by Southwark Council.

Tax on alcohol content ‘will put pubs on brink’ A local pub claims that Rishi Sunak’s plan to tax alcoholic drinks according to their alcohol content will “put hospitality businesses on a precipice, again.”

The plan, announced in last week’s budget, will cut the cost of a range of popular drinks, such as Guinness, Thatcher’s and rosé. It represents a major simplification of alcohol tax. He also announced a five per cent cut in the duty charge for transporting large quantities of alcohol.

The plan’s introduction saw several major pub companies’ share prices shoot up, such JD Wetherspoon and Mitchell & Butlers.

However, Sunny Hodge (pictured), founder of Diogenes The Dog on Rodney Road, Walworth, argues that the changes will have “disastrous effects” for smaller businesses - particularly those which try to offer something out of the ordinary.

Craft breweries that typically produce beers of a higher alcohol percentage will see their tax increase, while their more popular, weaker ABV competitors will have their prices fall.

Sunny said to the News: “As a whole, for smaller importers and niche bars who look to offer something outside of the norm, the increases have disastrous effects.

“Ninety per cent of what we sell will cost us more to get in. It puts tremendous pressures to put our own prices up.

“Our industry is a competitive one, and for small businesses like ourselves, we couldn't and wouldn't want to. The timing for this within hospitality at this current moment couldn't be worse - a year of turmoil, followed by the current staffing crisis, rising labour costs across the board, and now increasing product costs.

“It's a perfect storm that will put many hospitality businesses on a precipice, again.”

However, some other pubs see the changes as something that won’t necessarily damage smaller businesses, but won’t help them recover from lockdown either.

Steve Welsh, chairman of the Huntsman and Hounds in Walworth, said: “At a local pub level like the Huntsman & Hounds, the impact will be minimal.

“The five per cent cut in duty applies to draught containers over 40 litres and most of the beers supplied to us from the smaller craft brewers are in 20 litre or 30 litre containers, so the savings in duty do not apply.

Also key among Southwark Council’s recommendations were for the government significantly to increase funding for schemes allowing local authorities and residents to retrofit their homes - estimating that £2.6 billion of capital expenditure was necessary to reach the council’s 2030 goals on housing.

In early October, a nationwide protest held partly on the Aylesbury Estate in Camberwell called for a “retrofitting revolution.”

However, there was no mention of such a fund in Sunak’s announcement.

duty reduction is unlikely to work its way down to a saving in the price of a pint.

“The continuing pressures from inflation, wage inflation, supply chain costs and energy costs are likely to swamp any potential savings.”

Similarly, Matthew Green-Armytage, Director of the Crooked Well in Camberwell, said: “The alcohol duty change will have little to no effect on the overall financial health of our business.”

The treasury is reportedly consulting on changes to the tax regime to help benefit smaller pubs more.

Jury still out for small businesses Small businesses were often referenced by Rishi Sunak as one of the key benefiters of his new budget - but Southwark business owners seem lukewarm on last week’s budget announcement.

Two of the major new introductions announced in the budget were an increase in the national living wage to £9.50, and and a cut in half to business rates for the hospitality industry.

However, despite these seemingly significant changes, some business owners in Southwark feel that they will do little to offset the damage done to retailers by other policies, including LTNs and Brexit.

Michael Donovan, managing director of perfumery Roullier White in East Dulwich, was positive about the government’s intentions, saying: "In terms of taking business rates down, that’s obviously very much appreciated. But it was also far too high, and that should really have been tackled a while ago.

“My problem is not with the budget, it’s that Southwark Council will not open the road, and people cannot get to us. Central government is trying to do one thing and local government is trying to do another and it’s no good.”

Michael also cited Brexit as a key problem for small businesses, and one that the new budget was not helping. He added: “The cost of transporting goods in and out of this country is deranged.

“A cocktail glass I was selling for £12 two months ago I’m selling for £20 now because getting it here costs that much.”

Roger Wilkinson, manager of the Au Ciel Patisserie in Calton Avenue, Dulwich Village, agreed Brexit was an overriding problem .

The raise to the national living wage, meanwhile, was praised by both business owners, who already pay their staff the same amount but welcomed the move to support employees.

Roger said: “The budget is nothing too alarming, in the context of all the other damage they’ve done - so we’ll just have to see.”

Crossbones graveyard could HOST the uk’S first day of the dead

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk The Mexican Ambassador to the UK presented a Southwark graveyard with a beautiful statue as part of the Mexican Day of the Dead last Friday.

La Catrina, the image of Death in Mexico, now stands over the buried bodies of working class people and prostitutes in Crossbones Graveyard in Borough, a year before the Day of the Dead will be celebrated for the first time in England next year.

Last Friday, Mexican Ambassador Josefa González-Blanco met with council leader Kieron Williams and Mayor of Southwark Barrie Hargrove in the former paupers’ graveyard on October 29 to present the intricate statue.

Josefa described the graveyard as

“beautiful,” and said she was very emotional at being invited to present the Mexican symbol.

She was accompanied by musicians playing violin and harp, and traditional Day of the Dead refreshments including red hot chocolate.

Also present were volunteers who have helped maintain the vibrant garden that now covers the graveyard.

The space was also adorned with installations from anthropologist Lucy Coleman Talbot, who has been researching Crossbones graveyard for her PhD. The small installations include coffins marking the names of people who, through her research, Lucy had confirmed were buried at the site.

“I wanted to bring these people back into the space,” Lucy said. “They’re people who, because they were seen as undesirable at the time, have had

their stories forgotten by history.”

Old-fashioned milk jugs surround the coffin of a milkman who died of suicide, while a pair of speciallyknitted baby shoes sit atop the tiny coffin of an unknown baby.

Up to 15,000 people are estimated to be buried in the graveyard. More than 40 per cent of the skeletons belonged to stillborn children or babies under 11 months old, suggesting a very high infant mortality rate for the area.

There have been concerns that the site may be taken over for housing - but these fears were postponed after the Bankside Open Spaces Trust successfully gained a 30-year rolling lease last March.

While much of the site’s origins remain clouded in mystery, for now La Catrina will watch over visitors to the beautiful and peaceful graveyard, until the celebrations next year.

£63 Million for station upgrade ‘could pay for trams’ Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is paying £63m for a tube station upgrade that is “currently undeliverable” - and the borough’s Liberal Democrats want the money to be used on a new tram network instead.

The council has already handed Transport for London (TfL) about £37.8m since 2014 for upgrades to the Elephant and Castle tube station ticket hall and improvements to the northern roundabouts, and is due to spend another £25.2m over the next nine years, according to figures seen by the News.

The upgrades to the station were due to form part of the Bakerloo line extension, which would have seen two new tube stations added to the Old Kent Road.

Southwark Council said last year that the extension was “fundamental to plans for growth and development in the borough”.

Labour’s Cllr Johnson Situ added at the time that the upgrade to the station would “help support the case for the overall Bakerloo Line Extension project, strengthening TfL’s case for capital funding.”

But the extension to the Bakerloo Line has been shelved indefinitely, due to TfL’s financial struggles after the pandemic.

Earlier this year a TfL board member said the work was unlikely to happen in her lifetime.

News did emerge in a report by trade publication New Civil Engineer this week that TfL had asked consultants to draw up plans for tunnels as part of the extension, and land along the planned route had already been safeguarded. But there has been no confirmation that the money for the £3.1b project is available.

Meanwhile even the fate of the station upgrade itself appears to be shrouded in uncertainty. The work, which includes a ticket office, new escalators, lifts and entrance, as well as connecting tunnels from the Northern line to the Bakerloo line, is supposed to be paid for by developers Delancey, who are building on the site of the former shopping centre, Southwark Council and TfL. But the transport agency said in a report in October that it did not have the funding for its part of the project, which means that “the full scheme is currently undeliverable as originally envisaged”. TfL said this week that the first part of the station project was confirmed and the timing of the new ticket hall would be finalised when it had its share of the money.

It is unclear what proportion of the overall cost of the scheme is covered by the council - TfL has redacted the total amount from official documents, citing

“commercial sensitivity”.

TfL and mayor Sadiq Khan maintain that the core scope of works on the station upgrade should go ahead. Funding is likely to depend on TfL’s financial agreement with the government, with a meeting coming up in December.

But Southwark Liberal Democrat councillor Damian O’Brien is calling for Southwark Council to get back the money from TfL, halt future payments, and use the money to invest in a tram network.

Cllr O’Brien will ask the Labour council leader Kieron Williams what he plans to do to reclaim the money from TfL at a meeting on November 24, and ask for his view on the best use of the funds.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The Waterloo and City line, which runs between Waterloo and Bank stations, will start running a full service again for the first time in eighteen months in November, Transport for London (TfL) has said.

The line will reopen on November 22, operating on weekdays only. Trains will run from 6am to 12.30am, every three minutes at peak times and every five minutes off-peak. A peak time-only service has been in operation since June this year.

Trams have long been discussed as an option to tackle Southwark’s relative lack of public transport and are popular with both Labour and the Lib Dems. In March this year a motion that backed exploring new tram lines along a host of other green transport options gained cross-party support.

During the debate that followed the council not only confirmed it was actively looking into ideas to create the first new tramline in over a century in Southwark, but it also recognised the need for “rapid” solutions in the next few years, regardless of whether the Bakerloo line extension ever actually goes ahead.

Private company Trampower said in April it could pay for a new tram network itself, to be up and running by 2025 - but no planning application appears to have been made.

Cllr O’Brien said: “We’ve got all that money sitting in TfL’s bank account at the moment. Don’t sit on our money - we need it.” He added that the tram network was both a quality of life and an environmental issue. “If you’re going to implement climate stuff it takes money,” he said. “Most of the active transport infrastructure runs eastwest. What we need to do is bring people from the south of the borough to the north and vice-versa.”

Southwark Council did not respond to a request for comment.

A TfL spokesperson said: “We are committed to delivering the Elephant & Castle Station Capacity Upgrade in collaboration with Southwark Council and Delancey, which will provide step-free access between the Northern and Bakerloo lines and a new entrance, as well as adding extra capacity.

“Unfortunately our financial position has changed as a result of the pandemic and we cannot currently commit to provide our intended share of funding for the completion of the whole proposed scheme. Rather than impede the start of the development, it has been agreed with London Borough of Southwark and the GLA to use existing third-party funding to deliver the first phase of work, which includes the new station box, enabling works and connecting tunnels.

“This is crucial to enabling the wider development and protects our ability to proceed with our scheme in the future. The first stage of the project, which will provide the overall station box, is confirmed and early enabling works are already underway, with the timing of fitting out the new ticket hall to be confirmed when we are able to commit our share of the funding in the future.” commuters, closed in March 2020 amid the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Screen burn: ‘woke’ row over virtual bonfire plan

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Dulwich Sports Club have hit back after being accused of planning to create a “woke” bonfire night.

This year the sports club announced its intention to forego the traditional bonfire for this year’s Guy Fawkes’ festivities, and instead use a large screen to show the image of a bonfire.

This decision was soon picked up by the national press and branded as an unnecessary effort to appeal to climate change activists.

However, the secretary for the club stated that the event wasn’t marketed as a “green” firework display, and instead the fact that the screen is eco-friendly has been picked up and focused on.

The reason for the decision, states the club, is that planning for bonfire night

starts in the spring - which this year took place during lockdown.

Therefore, to ensure the event would be able to go ahead, the club ditched the bonfire in order to make full use of the cricket field, so that people could attend.

They added that the virtual bonfire seemed like a fun and novel thing for families, and that the environmentally friendly nature of the screen was just an added bonus. They have not ruled out having a real bonfire in future years.

However, several national media outlets focused on the online event listing for the event, in which the sports club say: “This year the event is 'Going Green' with an eco-friendly virtual Bonfire on the Big Screen.”

The sports club has also banned the use of sparklers on the site. Sparklers are increasingly seen as bad for the environment due to the fact that they are disposable and non-recyclable.

“Southwark Greenpeace will keep bringing the message that Tesco meat = deforestation directly to its stores until the UK’s largest supermarket lives up to its promise to remove deforestation from its supply chain.”

Over the last year similar protests have been held at nearly one thousand of Tesco’s almost three thousand stores across the UK, with many more visits planned in the coming weeks.

The protestors argue that Tesco buys British chicken and pork from suppliers owned by JBS, a company

which recently admitted it would accept deforestation in its supply chain for another fourteen years.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We know setting fires to clear land for crops or grazing is destroying precious habitats like the Brazilian rainforest, and that it must stop. That’s why we have worked alongside Greenpeace on the issue of deforestation in the Amazon over many years and we are committed to doing more, both directly and as part of a national and industry level solution.

“We now stock over 400 products and have a target to increase the sales of plant-based by 300% by 2025.

“We do not sell any Brazilian meat (beef, chicken or pork) due to concerns about deforestation. In early 2018 we became the first UK supermarket to remove Brazilian beef from sale.

“We have called for our government to mandate food companies, as part of its National Food Strategy, to introduce effective due diligence across supply chains to make sure all food sold in the UK is deforestation-free.”

Extinction rebellion protestors from Southwark marched to protest climate change last Saturday, accusing Southwark Council of “sticking their heads in the sand” and threatening to escalate if there is not immediate action.

Tesco’s CEO on cardboard cutout protest in Peckham over ‘links to deforestation’

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Armed with a life size cardboard cut-out of Tesco’s CEO, Peckham-based Greenpeace volunteers called for the supermarket giant to cut ties with companies that cause deforestation last Saturday.

Around 20 residents, equipped with placards, banners and drums, marched from Tower Bridge to Peckham, covering an area of Southwark they say could experience frequent flooding in a matter of years. The march took place the day before the beginning of COP26 - the United Nations Climate Change Conference being held this year in Glasgow.

Megan Atkins, on behalf of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Southwark, said: “If we don’t drastically reduce our emissions in the next decade, we could see devastating flooding that would endanger lives and livelihoods across the borough.

“Instead of sticking their heads in the sand, politicians at every level Westminster, City Hall, and Southwark Council - should be making these things their priority.”

XR Southwark has promised to escalate its protest in the coming months if there is not more urgent action on climate change.

Southwark Council declared a climate emergency in March 2019. They have since announced a Citizens’ Jury to bring Southwark residents in to discuss climate change.

They have also committed to planting 10,000 trees by 2022 and diverting 99 per cent of household waste from landfill, as well as using over 99 per cent of nonrecyclable waste for heat and electricity production.

Cllr Helen Dennis, Cabinet Member for the Climate Emergency and Sustainable Development, said: “We have been working closely with the Environment Agency, Thames Water, London Councils and neighbouring boroughs for many years. We have designed and delivered flood alleviation schemes and introduced measures to help areas at risk, such as Herne Hill, Delawyk Crescent, Comber Grove and Southampton Way. This has helped to reduce the level of risk across the borough and made residents more resilient in the future.

“Since declaring the emergency we have worked with people across the borough, updating our strategy to reflect what we learned. We have also made many necessary changes and are continuing to build on a dynamic roadmap, that will help us to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.”

If you drive a petrol vehicle over 15 years old, or diesel vehicle over 6 years old that doesn’t meet the emissions standards, you could have to pay a daily charge of £12.50. However, you don’t need to pay the daily charge if you are parked inside the zone and don’t drive.

‘Raining mud’ at Canada Water Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a Rotherhithe street have complained after their gardens were splattered with mud and water when a machine malfunctioned during building work on the Canada Water Masterplan.

The alarming incident forms just one part of the “almost unbelievable” disruption to the lives of people living on Hothfield Place between Lower Road and Canada Water Dock, several residents of the street have said.

Birkan Parlar, who lives with his parents on the street, said: “It was coming down like pellets. We had our niece over, who’s less than two years old. She likes to be outside in the garden, we were just lucky she wasn’t out there.

Imagine if it came down on her.”

Another resident, Marion Thorpe, is 78 and has a bad back for which she has just had an operation. She uses a stick to get around. A third neighbour, who did not want to be named, said of Marion: “If she had fallen it could have been life changing for her”.

Earlier Mr Parlar’s Audi had been covered in cement when parked on the street. He said that it took about six months to get repairs paid for.

This is just one part of the problems caused by the building works, residents said. People on the street told the News of the “constant shaking, constant noise” and dust from British Land’s work on a new leisure centre next to their houses.

One woman who lives on Hothfield Place has severe asthma that is triggered by the dust from the building work. “We explained all this before they even started,” said her husband, who asked to be named only as Al. “We can’t have the dust. They said they’ll cover it over with sheets - but they haven’t done that.”

He said that the dust “gets in everywhere,” even claiming that “it’s like being in prison - you can’t have a window open.”

Similarly Mr Parlar’s mother, who is in her 60s and is physically disabled, feels she cannot go into their back garden because of the dust, despite medical advice to get regular fresh air.

Noise is another big disruption during the day, residents said. Two people who work from home said that the banging sounds from the machinery meant they often had to reschedule meetings and calls.

Mr Parlar said: “When I tell you this thing sounds like a jet engine, I wish I

was exaggerating. It was the loudest thing I ever heard. When I first heard it I started panicking, I ran outside and asked them ‘what the hell are you doing?’

“I’m a web developer, so I’m working from home. I cannot hold meetings during certain hours because of the building work. There’s too much noise in the background.”

Al said his house shakes because of the machine. “We ran out and told them ‘you’ve got to stop, you’re going to have my telly off the wall.”

Ms Thorpe added: “It doesn’t stop all day. The noise is terrible. It feels as if they’re in my garden with the machine.

And then all this dust comes over.”

Mr Parlar also said there were security issues at the building site. He said that he had footage of several teenagers climbing into the site, spray-painting and even urinating on things. British Land changed the hoardings to reduce the risk of this happening again after residents brought it to their attention.

“They’re building, but we have to live here the whole time,” Mr Parlar said.

“I’m so mentally, physically tired of them. I can’t deal with it any more. I’ve had enough.”

Guto Jones, project director at British Land’s contractors Mace, said: “On Friday 8 October and Monday 11 October, we experienced unforeseen issues with a machine on site, resulting in a small amount of groundwater which spilled into the gardens of some neighbouring properties to our development site in Canada Water.

“The site team immediately spoke with the impacted residents, swiftly cleaned up the affected areas and installed a mesh net on top of the site hoarding as an additional mitigation measure. Our top priority is the health and safety of our employees and the communities where we work. We are mindful of the disruption that building works can cause and closely monitor noise, dust and vibration levels on site to ensure they are in-line with industry and local authority standards.

“Together with British Land and other contractors at the Canada Water development, we try to provide as much information about site works as we can ahead of time and host regular construction liaison forums.”

British Land’s £3.3bn Canada Water Masterplan will see the transformation of 53 acres of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays over fifteen years.

The colossal scheme, the largest in Southwark history, is set to create around 3,000 new homes, of which 35 per cent are affordable, as well as up to 20,000 new jobs and other community facilities.

What’s the future for Printworks?

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Fears have been raised about the fate of one of London’s top nightclubs after the developer of the Canada Water Masterplan submitted plans for office space on the site.

British Land said it had “explored a range of uses” for Printworks in Rotherhithe, and had taken forward a “workspace-led design”. The developer will also include shops in the site.

Printworks, which has only been running for about four years, was named the seventh best club in the world by DJ Mag this year - and British Land’s planning application has had more than 400 objections from people pointing out Printworks’ reputation as one of the best venues in the capital.

“Getting rid of Printworks would be a travesty for London club life,” one commenter said. “Some of my best ever clubbing moments have happened there and I know tens of people who feel the same. Needless to say there are thousands of others who also feel the same.”

Another added: “To go forward with this development and remove Printworks as a nightclub venue is the most terrible news that I have heard

since COVID struck”.

A third said: “It is venues such as this where the world’s most famous artists play that help London to maintain its global relevance and stature.”

A petition calling on ravers to oppose the application has gained more than 5,000 signatures.

But all may not be lost for London’s clubbers. British Land said that it “believes that culture will play an important role as part of a new urban centre at Canada Water.”

The developer added that it was in talks with Broadwick Live, who help run the venue, “as a key collaborator and tenant, following their success in

the Printworks over the last five years.”

British Land declined to go further into the content of talks and the future of the site. Printworks did not respond to a request for comment.

Printworks, the former Harmsworth Quays plant that used to print newspapers the Daily Mail, Metro and the Evening Standard, was originally built in the 1980s and has had a nightclub licence for five years. The 6,000-capacity space was given an extension for another five years in 2019.

Man arrested for ‘Behaving suspiciously’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been arrested in a Rotherhithe park after behaving suspiciously towards women.

It comes after we reported that police spoke to a man after he approached several women in Russia Dock Woodlands and Stave Hill Ecological Park the week before - and asked them to help search for his relative's keys.

Police said at the time that they could not arrest the man because there was no evidence he had done anything wrong.

It is unclear if the same person who approached women in the original spate of incidents is the one who has been arrested this time (Friday, October 22). Police said he was arrested under Section 5 of the Public Order Act, which covers harassment, alarm or distress.

Phone snatchers at it again in Canada Water

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk police were called out again in Canada Water last Wednesday (October 27) after a man said his phone was snatched by someone riding a bike outside Decathlon.

Residents have complained repeatedly about the constant threat of phone snatching in the area around Canada Water. The neighbourhood has also recently been plagued by a spate of illegal fireworks that have led to officers imposing dispersal orders three times - including this past weekend - and issuing warnings to two people.

No one has been arrested yet in this

case and police are still looking into the alleged theft.

A spokesperson for the Met said: "Police were called at approximately 14:00hrs on Wednesday, 27 October to reports of a mobile phone theft outside a commercial premises on Maritime Street, Southwark.

"A man reported that his phone had been snatched by a man on a bicycle.

No reports of any injuries. No arrests have been made; enquiries continue."

southwark health crisis: facing a ‘tsunami of unmet need’

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Health organisations in Southwark have a “once in a generation opportunity” to respond to the “tsunami of unmet need” highlighted by a recent health report.

Last month the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published a report stating that without adequate collaboration between health organisations, issues such as unacceptable waiting times and the disproportionate health impacts of COVID-19 for marginalised groups would persist - and maybe worsen.

Their report found that people who were less likely to receive good care before and during the pandemic were in many cases the same groups still disproportionally impacted by the virus.

The report comes after the government announced a £5.4 billion investment into the care sector.

Ian Renholm, Chief Executive of CQC, said: “As we go into winter, the health and care workforce are exhausted and depleted – which has clear implications for the vital care they deliver.

“We’re particularly concerned about adult social care. If the new Government funding is to have an impact, it needs to be used to do things differently and to develop genuinely collaborative ways of working across all care settings.”

One key issue facing adult social care highlighted by the report is that of vacancies in care homes. Data from information submitted to CQC by providers of residential care showed the vacancy rate rising from 6 per cent in April to 10.2 per cent in September.

Jane Darani, Anchor’s Director of Care Services for London and South East told the News: “We welcome the CQC’s recommendation that increased collaboration is needed across the health and care sectors.

“There’s a risk that if there aren’t enough care workers, some care homes may have to temporarily stop accepting new residents while the staffing shortfall is resolved, which means fewer people will have access to the care and services they need.

“It also may lead to more people having to stay in hospital unnecessarily when they are unable to access care packages and be safely discharged.

This will further increase the pressure of unmet need on an already stretched NHS further impacting waiting lists at a critical time of year as we head into

winter.”

South London Listens is another South London-based health organisation which hopes to meet the care crisis through collaboration, and highlights the issue of low wages facing the care sector.

On October 28 they unveiled their Action Plan in which they target four key areas: Loneliness, work and wages, young people and parental mental health, and access to services.

Sir Norman Lamb, Co-Chair of the South London Listens Taskforce and Chair of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We have a once in a generation opportunity to make a lasting change. and it is inspiring to be working in such close partnership between the NHS, local authorities, and members of our communities.

“Together we are going to make

lasting improvements to people’s lives.”

One of these commitments was one to make every partner in South London Listens a living wage employer, a move that was endorsed by Reverend Cathy Wiles, Assistant Priest at All Saints West Dulwich.

She said: “Low wages have long been a strain on mental health, which was only exacerbated by the pandemic.

Continued progress in this direction will be vital in both the prevention of mental ill-health and improving the wellbeing for every south Londoner.”

Launched in 2020 by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust with two other mental health Trusts in south London, South London Listens has heard from more than 6,000 people about how the pandemic had impacted their mental health and what they needed to support their recovery.

James Gillespie, 56, first discovered the mould on October 6 when he happened to move a picture in his sitting room and found mould growing behind it.

He has contacted the council multiple times since then, but despite much back and forth over email, the problem persists.

“After I saw the mould behind the picture, that led me to the kitchen,” said James. “And there I found even more.”

“I’ve had calls to the repair team, and some people have turned up to my door without calling or writing to me beforehand. They haven’t fixed the problem. Even after including council leader Keiron Williams in the email chain, nothing gets done.

“It’s a question of power dynamics.

I’m fairly savvy with trying to get things done, but even I’m exhausted.

It’s chaos. I’m concerned about my health. I can feel it in my chest when I walk past, and my eye vision is blurry sometimes.

“The other thing is the neighbours - they’re knocking on my door asking why they’ve got mould coming through the ceiling, and I have to keep saying, it’s not my fault, the council aren’t sorting it out.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “I understand Mr Gillespie’s frustration in needing to get this fixed, and we are in close contact with him about the issue.

“As the damp and mould originates from a leak in another property, we cannot disclose all the details of the issue, but I can reassure Mr Gillespie that we are aware of the problem, and will order the remedial works to his property as soon as we are able to complete a final technical inspection.”

Council scraps one low traffic neighbourhood scheme to start another a few streets away

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council is scrapping a planned low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) scheme in Borough because of “safety concerns”, while trialling a new one a few streets down.

The plan was to make the part of Webber Street that runs west from Blackfriars Road to Waterloo and the Cut be just for people riding bikes.

The council unveiled the planned scheme in March this year as part of Sadiq Khan’s streetspace programme to promote safe cycling and other forms of active travel in London. It was due to come into effect around Easter but never did.

A notice published last Thursday, October 28, by Dale Foden, the council’s head officer for highways, environment and leisure said: “The Blackfriars LTN trial is not proceeding in its original form due

to safety concerns at the Blackfriars Road/Webber Street junction.” The order came into force on Monday, November 1.

But a separate scheme is due to come in on Thursday, November 4, to promote walking and cycling and discourage people from driving cars around Webber Street, the council said in another notice published the same day.

The trial will make Baron’s Place, which links Waterloo Road and Webber Street, into a one-way street going north east. That means traffic will not be able to turn left into Baron’s Place from Webber Street or come straight into it from Valentine Place.

Cars will not be able to turn left into Webber Street from Valentine Place, although bikes will still be allowed.

No one will be able to turn left or right into Valentine’s Place from Webber Street.

LTNs have become a discussion

point in Southwark since they were first introduced amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Southwark Council cites government guidelines on improving air quality and safety for pedestrians in key areas, but many residents complain that the system simply diverts these issues elsewhere, and discriminates against those who rely on vehicles to get around.

A demonstration in Dulwich last month against an LTN there gathered an estimated 1,000 people. A survey carried out by Southwark Council found that more than 3,000 people in Dulwich – between 64 and 69 per cent – said they wanted the system scrapped, compared with just 800 who wanted to keep them.

The council said the survey was never a ballot. “Restricting traffic and parking is not popular, but it is necessary,” Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for transport, parks and sport, said to the News at the time.

drop in covid cases and where to get Booster jabs

kit@southwarknews.co.uk New Covid-19 cases in southeast London went down by around three per cent this week compared to last week, according to NHS data.

Southwark, Lambeth, Lewisham, Greenwich, Bexley and Bromley recorded 4,281 positive tests between them from October 25-31, official figures show. That was down from 4,414 cases the week before.

The drop would have been higher if it were not for a significant increase in Lambeth, which recorded another 733 positive tests, 20 per cent higher than its 628 over the previous seven days.

In Southwark the number of new cases dropped by nearly five per cent to 557.

Lewisham’s 608 new cases represented a drop-off of eight per cent, while Greenwich was down by more than fourteen per cent and Bexley saw a reduction in new cases of nearly thirteen per cent. Bromley was down by nearly five per cent.

Deaths remained relatively low across the week in south-east London, although they increased slightly from a low base the previous week. Two more people died after testing positive for Covid-19 in Southwark, up from one the week before. Lambeth and Lewisham both recorded the same number of fatalities - one and two respectively - while Greenwich and Bexley both saw deaths rise from one to three. In Bromley there were no new deaths, compared to one the week before.

Southwark’s total deaths after a positive Covid-19 test now stand at 372, a rate of just over 116 per 100,000 residents. Lambeth has had 537

people die - nearly 167 per 100,000.

Lewisham’s death rate from the virus is nearly 182 per 100,000 residents, while Greenwich is nearly 160. Outer boroughs Bexley and Bromley have the highest rates, with 235 and nearly 196 deaths per 100,000 residents respectively.

It comes as the NHS launched walkin services for booster Covid-19 vaccinations across the country. The health service said that nearly every person registered with a doctor lives within ten miles of a fixed vaccination site. People who can get a booster include those aged 50 and over, people who live and work in care homes, health and social care workers, anyone over the age of 16 whose health makes them vulnerable, and anyone who lives with a vulnerable person.

Dr Nikki Kanani, deputy lead for the UK’s Covid-19 vaccination programme, said: "The booster is not just nice to have, it is really important protection ahead of what we know will be a challenging winter."

Prime Minister Boris Johnson said on Sunday, October 31: "I think rather than thinking [about] new restrictions, the best thing everybody can do is get that booster jab as soon as you're offered it.

"I think people don't quite realise that the first two jabs do start to wane...

"How sad, how tragic it would be if people who had other complications, other compromises in their health, got seriously ill because they were overconfident about their level of immunity and didn't get their booster when they needed it."

60,000 people back Cinema museum

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A historic cinema museum near Elephant and Castle is campaigning for an end to the uncertainty that volunteers say has clouded its future since the site was sold to a developer three years ago.

The Cinema Museum in Kennington is on the site of a former workhouse where British and Hollywood silent film legend Charlie Chaplin spent part of his childhood in the late nineteenth century.

The volunteer-run museum holds a collection of film artefacts and was visited by more than 20,000 people each year before the Covid-19 pandemic. It gives out thousands of free tickets each year and lets out space for free or at discount rates to local schools and community groups. The museum has been at Dugard Way, a few minutes’ walk south of the Elephant and Castle roundabout, for more than twenty years.

The site was sold by the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust to property developers Anthology, the London branch of a larger company called Lifestory in 2018.

Anthology put in a planning application to build a 29-storey tower containing 258 flats, while committing to maintain the Cinema Museum. More than 450 people objected to the plans, saying the building would be too tall. Lambeth Council rejected the application and a further appeal also failed.

Turning down the appeal, the planning inspector said the plans would be “alien and incongruous”. The future of the site is now unclear. Anthology did not reply to a request for comment.

Despite the application being turned down, volunteers said they were still concerned about the future of the museum, which is on a short lease. A petition calling on local authorities and Lifestory to secure the future of the museum as a vital community asset has gained nearly 60,000 signatures at the time of publication.

A spokesperson for the museum said: “We ask those with the power - Anthology/ Lifestory; Lambeth Council; the Mayor of London and the Greater London Authority (GLA) - to work with The Cinema Museum and the local community to put an end to the years of damaging uncertainty and agree a sustainable future for everyone on site.”

Local poppy appeal chief organiser Jill Merrett and deputies Geraldine Howard and Ken Higgins took part in the ceremony in Surrey Quays shopping centre alongside Cllr Barrie Hargrove, the borough’s mayor, who

often attends ceremonial events.

Two Royal British Legion standard bearers held flags, which they lowered during a performance of the Last Post and Southwark sea cadets also helped collect money. Singer Jade Britton gave a rendition of the hymn Jerusalem.

The amount of money raised is so far unclear because organisers have not counted yet.

A remembrance service is going to be held at the West Lane War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday, November 14.

PATIENTS ARE POSITIVE ABOUT THEIR CARE AT OUR HOSPITALS

PATIENTS SAY they continue to feel positive about their care at Guy’s and St Thomas’ and Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals in a national survey of hospital care.

The results of the 2020 national adult inpatient survey, published by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on 19 October, show that patients at Guy’s and St Thomas’ remain confident and trust the doctors and nurses treating them, and feel involved in decisions about their treatment and care.

The survey results also show that the Trust is better at giving patients information about their medicines compared to other similar trusts, and at asking patients for feedback about the quality of their care.

crackdown on delivery riders using e-scooters Sadiq Khan

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Sadiq Khan has promised to order on-demand delivery companies to stop their riders using e-scooters for deliveries, which is against the law.

Private e-scooters cannot be ridden on public roads or pavements - only on private roads. Transport for London (TfL) is running a trial e-scooter scheme in certain London boroughs, including Southwark.

But seeing private e-scooters on

roads and pavements is extremely common, despite the rules and the danger. One recent example was a boy completely overbalancing on his e-scooter as he turned left onto Ilderton Road from Old Kent Road last week, and falling over in front of traffic.

Sadly, four people have died or been seriously injured in London in e-scooter accidents over the past year, including Michael Harris, who passed away in July following an alleged collision with a car in Long Lane in Bermondsey.

Caroline Pidgeon, who chairs the London Assembly's transport committee, asked London mayor Khan what he was doing to crack down on the illegal use of e-scooters, citing the problem of food delivery drivers "illegally riding e-scooters on pavements, nearly knocking over pedestrians... near London Bridge.

"Will you write to these on-demand delivery companies asking them to enforce the law and to keep our pavements safe for pedestrians?" she asked Khan at a recent question-andanswer session.

Ten years in jail for killer of rapper 21 Savage’s brother

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk The man who fatally stabbed the brother of rapper 21 Savage in a South East London housing estate has been sentenced to ten years in jail.

Tyrece Fuller, 22 from Kennington was last week found guilty of the manslaughter of Terrell DavisEmmons, 27, following a week-and-ahalf long trial at Inner London Crown Court.

The court heard that CCTV captured the attack on Terrell, which happened on the evening of 22 November 2020.

Terrell is seen on CCTV approaching Tyrece and hugging him near Ramilles Close, Brixton Hill. An altercation then broke out between the two, in which both men brandish knives at each other, before a third man separates them.

Both men put their knives away, and appeared to be walking in opposite directions.

However, shortly before 6pm, CCTV captured Tyrece pulling out a six-inch knife and stabbing Terrell once in the chest before running away.

Police officers and paramedics rushed to the scene, arriving within minutes, but could not save Terrell’s life. He was pronounced dead at 6:39pm.

Tyrece had previously told the court he owed Terrell £800 in gambling debt and that the 27-year-old had threatened him.

Terrell’s brother Shéyaa Bin Abraham-Joseph, more widely known as rapper 21 Savage, posted an

emotional Instagram post about the loss of his brother.

Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran, who led the investigation, said: “I would firstly like to say my thoughts are with Terrell's family as they continue to come to terms with the tragic events of the past year.

“The events of November 22 clearly demonstrate the dangers of carrying a knife. The Met will continue to clamp down on violence in all its forms so we see no more young men losing their lives on our streets.”

Tyrece Fuller was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment for manslaughter and three years for possession of an offensive weapon, to run concurrently.

The mayor said he would. "Not only will we write to them, but we are also going to follow up with the [police], because they are illegal," he added.

The police are trying to curb the use of illegal scooters, Khan said. In June alone, more than 1,100 scooters being used unlawfully were seized across London. Other possible punishments include a £300 fine and six penalty points on a rider’s driving licence for riding with no insurance.

Pidgeon also pressed Khan on the problem of shops making sure the people who buy e-scooters understand that they are illegal on public roads. She said that big chains like Halfords were reliable in informing people of the rules, but smaller, private shops might be a problem.

planning another initiative to help shops understand the problem in the run-up to Christmas.

"Many of those who buy the illegal e-scooters do not have access to a private road and buy them not realising that, particularly at this time of year with Christmas approaching," he added.

"The issue is, in relation to online sales, it is not unlawful to sell them.

Many of these come from overseas.

There are really serious concerns around the quality and safety of some of these. In relation to the retailers, they are not breaking the law by selling them.

"What we are trying to persuade them to do is exactly what you said, make sure it is big and bold in plain language, “When you are buying this, this is illegal, save for a private road.”

Police break up huge illegal rave in Bermondsey arches

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police broke up a huge illegal rave in South Bermondsey this weekend with about 150 people at the scene.

Officers were called to an unlicensed music event (UME) by the railway arches in Corbett's Lane, off Silwood Street, in the early hours of Saturday morning (October 30).

Police dispersed the revellers, took the sound system and reported the organisers for licensing offences. Officers left the scene at about 3.45am.

Large parties like this can attract drug-dealing and violence, police said.

Officers learned of people planning these events and carried out arrests in Southwark, seizing drugs, knives and other weapons.

The Corbett's Lane event came after a police officer was injured when dispersing 300 youths from another rave in Lambeth on the same night.

Police found the partygoers at about 11.45pm in a youth centre on

Glasshouse Walk in Vauxhall. Officers dispersed the crowd - but fights started to break out and some of the youths started setting off fireworks at police.

One officer was treated for injuries and the party was eventually broken up by 1.20am.

Chief inspector Jack May-Robinson said: "These gatherings blight the lives of local residents. They often attract anti-social behaviour and can be dangerous environments for those attending them.

“Where we identify an event, we work hard to ensure that appropriate action is taken and equipment is seized to prevent attendees moving to another location.

“Extra patrols are taking place all over London to maintain public safety.

I would urge anyone with concerns to contact police so that we can interrupt these UMEs before they escalate.”

It comes after 26-year-old Jason Nyarko was killed at a rave in Bermondsey's Stockholm Road in June.

His sister has pleaded for witnesses to come forward.

Dulwich boys hug 100 trees for climate change Two young boys from Dulwich were hugging 100 trees last weekend to fight climate change.

Plastic Free Peckham to help local businesses A local community group has begun a crowdfunding campaign to launch a new community project following their recent award win.

Plastic Free Peckham won the Sustainable Green Investment Award on September 17 at the Southwark Business Resilience Awards.

Now, Plastic Free Peckham is looking to source funding for a brand new project: Sustainable Peckham.

The project will work with small businesses over the course of a year, delivering carbon literacy training as well as group workshops to encourage collaboration and sustainable business practices.

It aims to help businesses to work together to improve Southwark’s high streets, reduce air pollution and minimise carbon footprints, with the aim of creating a network of resilient small businesses.

Results from the project will include a range of ‘How To’ guides for small business, which will be made freely available with the aim of driving change across Peckham - and beyond.

“99.9% of all businesses in the UK are small to medium-sized and 96% of these are micro businesses, with just 0 – 9 employees” said Laura.

“The sheer number of these businesses means their combined impact could be huge. We want to arm them with the tools to help them make small and simple changes, and to support each other, to reduce their carbon footprint and improve the impact they have on the environment and the local community”.

Awards saw a total of 52 businesses listed as finalists across nine categories, delivered in partnership with London South Bank University with winners decided by 8,436 votes cast.

East Dulwich schoolboys Thomas and Daniel Pickles, aged 11 and eight, hugged 100 trees over the weekend to raise money for the Catford-based conservation charity Rainforest Trust UK, which helps prevent deforestation in tropical rainforests.

The Rosemead Preparatory School pupils will started hugging trees on Saturday October 30, the day before the COP26 Climate Talks. His brother Daniel added, “I love animals and want to help protect their rainforest homes. A lot of wild animals are becoming extinct because forests are being cut down and they have nowhere to live.

important they are for the planet and future generations – and great outdoor exercise too!"

Chris Redston, the Executive Director of Rainforest Trust UK, added, “Tropical deforestation causes about 15% of all net global carbon emissions, which is the same as every bus, train, car, plane, ship and truck on the planet combined. Rainforests are currently being destroyed at a rate of about 70,000 acres a day, mainly through deliberate burning and clearing for cattle ranches, soy plantations and palm oil. We are extremely grateful to Thomas and Daniel for stepping up to hug trees and protect the rainforests– they are true climate heroes!”

Foundation awards 71 amazing young people A philanthropists’ foundation has recognised 71 incredible young people from schools and colleges in South East London.

The winners, aged 11-25, received medallions and framed certificates from the Jack Petchey Foundation prior to the online event along with a £250 grant for them to spend to benefit their school or youth group.

In addition, 3 adults were awarded Leader Awards for demonstrating outstanding ability to motivate young people. They each received a medallion and a framed certificate.

Sir Jack Petchey is a 96-year-old philanthropist who built a multimillion-pound taxi business out of £39. His foundation recognises talented young people and has supported over 2,000 initiatives for young people across London and Essex.

JJ loves being outside, especially in extreme weather conditions.

He was awarded the Jack Petchey Achievement Award for helping the Outdoor Learning Coordinator collect materials for future lessons.

“JJ has worked very hard to make it look pretty and I am very proud of him. He is a superstar.”

Award winner JJ decided to spend his £250 Jack Petchey Achievement Award grant on plants for the garden balcony including tomatoes, strawberries, honeysuckle and wild grasses.

Additionally, Emmanuel Olojede, aged 15, who attends St Thomas More Catholic Comprehensive, was awarded his Jack Petchey

Achievement Award for good citizenship.

While walking home from school one day he saw that a girl from another school was being harassed by a man on the street. Emmanuel walked over to the girl and pretended to know her so that he could walk with her to the bus stop and wait with her until she had got safely on the bus.

Emmanuel decided to spend his £250 Jack Petchey Achievement Award grant on a school trip for his class.

In total, Greenwich have received funding of £1.3m from the Jack Petchey Foundation since funding started.

Sir Jack founded the Jack Petchey Foundation in 1999 to recognise the positive contributions young people make to society and to support them in achieving their potential.

Model’s ‘shoebox’ presents scheme for homeless women A Camberwell model is calling for people to donate useful items for homeless women in London in the run up to Christmas.

Alongside her day job Aimee Foy is running the UK's Shoebox Project - when people give shoeboxes of things like shampoo, socks and cosmetics to women living in homeless shelters as a Christmas present.

Explaining why she has taken on the project this year, Aimee said: "I used to work at [West End nightclub] Mahiki and I always used to see the homeless women outside. I used to think 'f*cking hell, this is awful.'

"I don’t always work five days a week, and I wanted to do something else, on my own terms. This is something I felt passionate about."

The shoeboxes are meant to help homeless women feel special. The Shoebox organisation says on its website: "A Shoebox gift is a powerful reminder for a woman that she has not been forgotten and that she remains a valued and respected member of her community."

A shoebox is "a small, simple gesture of kindness that has an immediate, positive impact on the woman who receives it."

If you would like to give a shoebox, please fill it with gifts worth between £35 and £50. As well as toiletries and cosmetics, Aimee suggests giving things like something useful for colder weather like a woolly hat or gloves; a notepad and pencils; or even a gift card.

Please do not give anything with alcohol in it, razors, or foundations or concealers.

Aimee added: "One of the big things the shelters say, these women often come from domestic abuse situations. They leave in the night and so don't have a lot of the things they might normally have with them."

She wants to collect all the shoeboxes by the first two weekends of December, when she and volunteers will collect all the boxes and do quality control checks - making sure each package is roughly equal.

They will also write individual notes to each woman that gets a box and gift wrap them before they are delivered.

As well as boxes from people and families, she said she has had companies donations from Selfridges, Google and Nationwide.

This is Aimee's first year running the London version of the project, which began in Canada. The UK operation only launched in recent years.

riverside gym for our nurses at st thomas’

A nurse at St Thomas' hospital has got a "spectacular" new gym built that overlooks the river Thames, as part of the hospital's efforts to help staff recover from the mental and physical impacts of working through the Covid-19 pandemic.

The new outdoor gym overlooks Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament and the river Thames. It is free for staff and patients to use and accessible for people in wheelchairs.

Some of the equipment can convert the energy generated by users into electricity so that gym goers can charge their devices as they work out.

Neonatal nurse Marie Hines, who had the idea for the new gym, said: “Having volunteered as a personal trainer at a GP referral gym in London and through teaching yoga, I have seen how important exercise is to help with both physical fitness and emotional wellbeing.

“As a nurse at St Thomas' Hospital,

I felt we could also offer this support to our own patients, by having an outdoor gym where they could maintain independence, fitness and socialise with visitors away from the ward.

“I am very grateful to our charity for their support and hope patients and staff will make the most of this gym that has the best view in London.”

The gym was built with funds from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity.

Avey Bhatia, Chief Nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “We know that getting outside and exercising has real benefits for our physical and mental health. Now, as we recover from the pandemic, focusing on our wellbeing has never been more important.

“It is absolutely fantastic that thanks to donations to Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity we have such a great facility here at the hospital that people can use for free.”

‘Heroic’ responders to London Bridge terror attack recognised people who "valiantly" brought down the killer who stabbed a young man and woman to death on London Bridge in 2019 have been commended for their bravery.

The ceremony recognised the "heroism" of members of the public, police officers and first responders who stepped in to confront Usman Khan after he killed Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones and injured others in Fishmongers Hall on November 29, 2019.

Metropolitan police commissioner Cressida Dick awarded the commendations at the event last Friday (October 29) alongside City of London police commissioner Ian Dyson.

An inquest earlier this year found failings by police and MI5 over how Khan was managed after being released from prison. He was let out on licence in 2018 after being imprisoned for eight years for terrorism offences.

Khan was shot dead by police on the bridge after being cornered by members of the public in the aftermath of the killings of Mr Merritt and Ms Jones.

Commissioner Dick said: “It is right and proper that we have gathered to recognise the selfless acts of heroism by the public and our first responders, when in late 2019, the lives of two promising young people were violently taken in an act of terror.

“It was just before 2pm when the attack started and many members of the public immediately responded, giving no thought to their own safety in order to stop the attacker and help those seriously injured. Shortly after, officers from both the City of London and Metropolitan Police, along with other emergency service colleagues, were called to London Bridge to face a deadly threat. Our officers showed the very best of policing. They did so without hesitation, putting their own lives at risk to protect the public and save lives.

“It is beyond doubt that the members of the public who confronted the attacker

“Although we’ll be celebrating and commending some truly remarkable feats, it is done with an enduring sadness, knowing that despite such heroic efforts, it was not enough to save Jack Merritt and Saskia Jones, who were tragically killed; our thoughts continue to be with their families and loved-ones and with everyone affected by the awful events.”

Mr Merritt and Ms Jones were stabbed to death by Khan at a criminal rehabilitation event.

An inquest earlier this year found failings by police and MI5 over how Khan was managed after being released from prison. He was let out on licence in 2018 after being imprisoned for eight years for terrorism offences.

Police giving evidence at the inquest said that Khan strapped eight-inch knives to his hands before attacking Merritt and Jones shortly before 2pm at the event.

They both died at about 2.30pm, despite receiving treatment from other people at the event and paramedics.

Khan inflicted serious stab wounds on two other people, but they both survived.

Others received minor injuries.

Three men from the event bravely pursued Khan out onto London Bridge as police arrived. Khan was wearing what

appeared to be a suicide vest, which was later discovered to be a “hoax”, made of a “slimming belt”, a battery charger and X-Box components. He was shot several times and died shortly afterwards.

A later inquest found that he was "lawfully killed".

City of London police commissioner Ian Dyson said it was an honour to commend the people involved in responding "valiantly" to the "horrific" attack.

“They will say, “I was just doing my job”, or “I did what anyone else would do”, but their actions are truly remarkable," he added.

“It is humbling to hear such examples of exceptional courage, selflessness and dedication, as we also remember Saskia Jones and Jack Merritt – two young people who also demonstrated these qualities in abundance throughout their lives, which were tragically cut short that day.

“I am extremely proud of everyone who has been commended and would like to express my gratitude to their loved ones, whose unwavering support will have been a great comfort as they come to terms with the effects of the attack, and also to those who dedicated countless hours to the investigation and inquests. I am honoured that so many of them could be here to witness their loved ones receiving their commendations.”

Passed over: clearly a London-lite budget

hose who followed the Autumn Statement last week will have noticed that London was for the most part glossed over by the Chancellor. This was clearly a London-lite budget.

This was disappointing for many reasons, but mainly because the capital has a key role to play in driving the country’s green economic recovery forward.

As world leaders gather for COP26 in Glasgow this week, the Government has another opportunity to put this right and empower cities, like London, to go even further on cleaning up their air, reaching their net-zero targets and in the process, creating the next generation of green jobs.

GLA Member for Southwark & Lambeth London ULEZ which has seen a huge reduction in harmful roadside nitrogen dioxide emissions- spreading the benefits of cleaner air for thousands more Southwark residents.

To help Londoners, businesses and charities prepare for this and switch their older and more polluting vehicles to models that are compliant with new emissions standards, the Mayor has invested £61 million into a series of vehicle scrappage schemes since 2018.

I now want to see the Government expand the current scope of the Clean Air Fund to bolster these schemes- especially as it has already financially supported clean air zones in other cities such as Birmingham, Bristol and Portsmouth.

It is also important that Ministers use COP26 to commit to backing key transport infrastructure projects in London, such as the continued rollout of electric and hydrogen buses, that will help us to become

a zero-carbon city by 2030.

Transport for London’s (TfL) finances have been pushed to the brink by the pandemic. Last week, it was very concerning to see the Chancellor pledge new investment to other regions for their transport services, but miss out London.

The lack of long-term Government funding for TfL has thrown the future of major upgrades to our transport network into uncertainty.

As this paper has recently reported, this includes the Bakerloo Line Extension which would have huge benefits for Southwark’s local economy and connectivity.

Next month, Ministers face a deadline to provide TfL with its next emergency settlement to stop tube and bus services from grinding to a halt.

In the build-up, they must come to the table with the Mayor and TfL to agree upon a fair and multi-year funding deal.

Cop26 is helping showcase the inaction of our world leaders on climate change, but it should not let Labour’s unambitious council policy off the hook.

The UN at the end of October released another damning report on climate change ahead of Cop26. The report forecast, based on nations’ pledges at the time, that carbon was on track to reduce by only 7.5% by 2030.

This is well below the 45% drop scientists say is necessary to limit global temperature rises to 1.5C. The only conclusion to make is that our global leaders have not been doing enough. The result will be an increased likelihood of natural disasters such as flooding in Southwark.

These catastrophic eventualities should not only be attributed to the inaction of countries’ premiers, however. We all have a part to play, including Southwark Labour.

The party needs to concede that it has more power to help lower emissions than it openly admits and that its failure to use these levers is damaging.

South Bermondsey 'Robin Hood' on a mission to help young people avoid gang life top ten for estimated CO2 levels by area nationally and recent analysis, reported on by The Times, ranks the borough as the fourteenth worst for air pollution in England.

Southwark is consequently a large contributor to carbon emissions and air pollution. Yet, the council is unwilling to invest itself fully in reducing them.

The authority’s gross delay in publishing its climate strategy (it came two and a half years after we declared a Climate Emergency) highlights this.

When the council released the document environmental campaigners, including Extinction Rebellion Southwark, lambasted the strategy for having no clear timeline or specific targets.

There is nothing stopping the authority from being a leader and taking direct action over matters in its control.

Southwark could substantially raise its tree-planting target from 10,000 by 2022 to over 100,000 by 2025.

Or it could change policy to ensure that future developments in the borough are low carbon by default, such as those constructed to the Passivhaus standard.

Both of these ideas will feature in

the Southwark Liberal Democrat 2022 manifesto, alongside many other environmental pledges.

Other councils have implemented similarly creative and successful policies.

Nottingham City Council collected £61m after it created a parking space levy. It will invest this money into active or public transport.

Southwark Labour, in contrast, was unable to collect more than approximately £2m of the £10m legally owed to it by developers for its carbon-offset fund.

The council, worryingly, has earmarked this woeful amount of money for its new Green Buildings Fund that will focus on the retrofitting of properties in the borough.

If Southwark buildings cause 79% of carbon emissions, as research states, the council will need to collect all the money it can to fund such environmental improvements.

After a decade in power, the party is clearly unable to realise its policies remain unambitious and ineffective.

It can change this by taking responsibility for its failures and by going further, faster now on climate change.

The signage is a disgrace.

It may live up to the regulations (as it was passed by the department of transport) but I got caught out, driving a van with navigation aid in heavy congestion, you are watching the road & tiny height restrictions, weight limits on the signage is not something you notice as you are trying to avoid other tragic and bumps. If they really wanted to stop over height traffic, simple height barriers with flashing warnings if over height would solve one issue & larger warning signs before reaching it as mentioned could solve the issues. Why should Southwark be spending millions on a station upgrade that may never happen?

R

eviving Southwark’s tram network has been a popular idea in Southwark for decades. You can see why - they’re quiet, greener than cars and buses, and relatively quick, cheap and easy to put in. And they would help sort out the large gaps in public transport in parts of the borough.

Southwark Council’s long-term goal for the Old Kent Road area is to build 20,000 homes - a huge undertaking that would transform neighbourhoods. Many of these homes have been built or have planning permission - but the council has said many times that the full scheme needs the Bakerloo Line Extension to be built in order to work properly.

Southwark and Lewisham councils both campaigned hard for the Bakerloo Line Extension, but it looks unlikely to happen now for a long time, if at all.

The Elephant and Castle station upgrade is inherently linked to the extension - the station is the last stop on the Bakerloo line as it currently exists. Improving access and connecting it better to the Northern line would be an important part of making the extension work. But TfL has said that the station upgrade may not happen because it does not have the funds (although it has also said it does not want this to delay the start of the work).

The Lib Dem argument is easy to see - why should Southwark, also hit hard by the pandemic, be spending so much money on something that may never happen, and whose benefits to the people of the borough may be unclear anyway - when they could use those millions for something relatively quick and easy?

The flipside is why the tram revival has never happened, despite its popularity over several decades. Southwark Council did not respond to our report this week - we will have to wait for council leader Kieron Williams’ response to Cllr Damian O’Brien’s question on November 24 to get a fuller idea of Southwark’s plans.

Nicholas Wright’s adaptation of Pat Barker’s Regeneration takes us into the dark, inner-workings of both the mind and the military hospital set up to either cure ‘Shell-shock’ or root out ‘cowardice’, writes Michael Holland.

High-ranking soldiers finding themselves shipped to Craiglockhart would enjoy the privacy of their own rooms and have pleasant chats over tea and cake with the medical staff as doctors tried to talk them back to good health, while lower ranks, who shared dormitories, suffered electric shock torture as a treatment.

Hence, the celebrated war poet, Siegfried Sassoon getting the full ‘talking cure’ off Dr Rivers, who draws heavily on Freud’s work and who was visibly impressed when he discovered Sassoon had read Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams - in German, and a soldier who wasn’t ‘quite one of us’ having his mouth and neck electrocuted to force him to talk!

Rivers soon finds himself in a quandary. While he’s trying to convince these young men to go back to the trenches - where the average life span for an officer is three months - because they are his orders from above, he is slowly coming round to their way

of thinking, that war is futile. As he tries to keep his superiors happy he becomes as anti-war as his patients.

Into the fray comes Wilfred Owen, a budding poet in awe of Sassoon.

The pair, with their love of poetry soon become friends.

The narrative is now, will the soldiers get well, will they get sent back to the fighting, will Siegfried and Wilfred kiss? We get a brief up date on these questions at the end but when a play is condensed from a trilogy of books, it touches on much but focusses on none. Was Regeneration about the hospital, the poets or just a vehicle to carry an anti-war message?

This is a long play with the cast of five playing most of WWI’s walking wounded. The demands of learning a lot of lines for many different characters is difficult, but they did admirably well and I know as the run progresses they will find it easier.

For me, I came away with more insight into the mind of Dr Rivers, who sold his soul at the expense of young lives.

Noel & The Rhythmics in World Championships Noel Sullivan has been singing for most of his life, beginning when he trained as a chorister and toured the U.S. with The Black Mountain Male Chorus of Wales; then as a member of Hear’Say, a group put together on the TV show Popstars that had some success in the months they were recording, followed by years of musical theatre, and now, 20 years on, Noel is starring in a brand new musical that will have its world premiere in London and he is going to tell the Southwark News all about it, writes Michael Holland.

Well, I thought he was but he didn’t answer my pre-arranged call and after waiting half hour I made plans to do other things with my day. But then a flustered and exasperated Noel called, out of breath and apologetic, to explain that his bike had just been stolen and he had been with the police at our allotted time. So, all’s well that end’s well. Though, perhaps not for Noel seeing as he is a bike down.

He grew up in a household where mum was a ‘soul queen’ playing Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Simply Red and Stevie Wonder, while his grandmother was a classical musician.

‘I used to spend weekends with her and

she led me down the choral classical path, so I have quite a mixed bag of musical influences,’ says the man who once understudied for Welsh National Opera.

‘I really love something with a groove but I can also really appreciate harmonies, as well.’

I asked about career highlights and after revealing that he loves anything that involves a big performance he focussed in on his time in We Will Rock You when he got to sing with Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor. And who could dispute that?

‘I love working on those big productions with the iconic music that people love,’ he says, ‘The battle’s already won when the audience know the music.’ And having been in Fame, Grease and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, amongst others, I reckon Mr Sullivan has enjoyed many an appreciative audience.

In his twenties Noel worked in Las Vegas: ‘It was great, I love Vegas, I’m just glad I got out of there alive,’ he jokes. ‘It’s the kinda place where reality ceases to exist’. It was there that he saw some of the great performers at the top of their game (he mentions Prince and Tom Jones) and where he was part of big production shows like Simply Ballroom that he

claims were, ‘What I should have been doing between leaving college and going to university’.

Having done some of the big stuff such as being a platinum selling pop star, and performing on some the biggest stages, Noel is now getting back to more grittier work. He is currently playing a nonsinging role at the Finborough Theatre and will soon be in rehearsals for The Rhythmics, which will premiere at Southwark Playhouse in December.

‘With a new show,’ begins Noel, ‘it’s really starting from scratch and not just acting by numbers that well-known shows that keep repeating their winning formulas are, and I want to do more of that stuff now.’ He spoke of the audition and the production company that he has worked with before and was very excited about this project. “Musical theatre is a lot more demanding,’ he claims, ‘so I’ve got to get my stamina back and make sure I can sing and move at the same time.’ There was that laugh again.

The press release says The Rhythmics is, “Hapless single-dad Grey is in a rut.

Teenage daughter Silva packs him off to revive his rockstar dreams, successfully auditioning for ‘Nick & the Rhythmics’ only to realise... he’s actually signed up for

an All-male Rhythmic Gymnastics troupe.

Against the odds these burly blokes make it as far as the World Championships twirling their ‘ribbons of fire’ - and along the way Grey finally learns to commit to life. Calendar Girls meets The Full Monty in this joyous new British musical.” And that all sounds like a whole lotta fun.

It is, as Noel says, ‘a real feel-good show and perfect for Christmas; people are going to leave the theatre, buzzing.’

Noel Sullivan laughs a lot and jokes that a highlight is ‘that I’m still here’. He obviously enjoys what he does and when one job ends he is instantly looking for the next challenge. He revealed that he has written a film script that has attracted some interest, so 2022 could be another challenge met and conquered.

I enjoyed our conversation and hope that talking to me about his life and work took his mind off his lost bike for a short while.

hidden history of southwark’s travellers They’ve been in Southwark for years and are the number one target of online hate speech in the UK proportionate to their size - and hardly anyone knows anything about them, writes Charles Harrison ...

While there is no exact definition of Travellers, a widely accepted one is that they are people who are nomadic in their way of life, regardless of their race or origin.

Romany Gypsies, Irish, Welsh and Scottish Travellers are recognised in law as ethnic groups and are identified as having a shared culture, language and beliefs.

This community have been shrouded in misunderstandings since they first came to the country - for instance, the word “gypsy” derives from the 15th century, when English natives incorrectly assumed that Indian Travellers were Egyptian due to their complexion.

While the 2011 census found that there were 263 Travellers in Southwark, charity organisation Southwark Travellers Action Group (STAG) estimate the number to be closer to 1,250.

Earlier this year, STAG ran an exhibition in Peckham during Hate Crime Awareness Week to showcase the lives of travellers who have

settled in Southwark.

Key to the exhibition was the abuse and mistreatment often faced

by Travellers. Despite comprising only two per cent of the population, Travellers account for fifteen per cent of racist or discriminatory slurs overall. 82 per cent of Gypsy, Roma or Traveller respondents had also experienced media incitement to racial hatred.

The exhibition focused on, among others, the Joyce family, a group of Irish travellers who moved to Southwark in the 80s.

In a letter still kept by STAG, mother Margaret Joyce wrote to the Royal family in 1991, requesting help when they were left without any facilities from Southwark Council.

Issues the travellers faced included having to use chemical toilets designed for temporary use, and rats “the size of cats.”

But it was her children’s health and education that were Margaret’s biggest concern.

She highlighted: “Last month a lass of 2 1/2 fell in the chemical toilet and God knows what would have happened but for a nine-year-old who pulled her out.

“Can you tell the D.O.E and Southwark Council to settle their arguments and build the 45 pitches

that are needed so that us and our children can live the decent life that we want and deserve.”

The letter resulted in Margaret meeting the Queen.

While studies on the lives of Travellers are limited, a report by the Equality and Human Rights Commission found an excessive number of miscarriages, stillbirths, neonatal deaths and premature death of older offspring. They were also higher rates of suicides and reported anxiety.

Travellers continue to face struggle and discrimination. One unnamed Traveller child said: “We don’t get a lot of opportunity to go travelling as we’re sent away by every town, village and place we go…there’s good and bad in our community like any other community. We all shouldn’t be painted with the one brush.”

In a 2012 report by the Southwark Council Health, Adult Social Care, Communities & Citizenship Scrutiny Sub-Committee, the council identified a need for better support for early child development among travellers.

STAG help to promote this by offering free trips to local places, including the cinema and bowling, for Traveller children, as well as a Women’s Group which offers weekly health and well-being sessions.

Public Notice - London Borough of Lambeth - DESIGNATION OF AN AREA FOR ADDITIONAL LICENSING Section 56, Housing Act 2004 The London Borough of Lambeth (“the Council”) in exercise of powers under section 56 of the Housing Act 2004 (“the Act”) hereby designates for additional licensing the whole of the area in its district, as delineated in red on Map 1. Seven goals, one red card and a missed penalty - Dulwich’s fifth in their last eight games. In the end, the majority of those inside the stadium were sent into ecstasy when Jack Holland scored the winning goal with a minute left.

It was a fitting finish to a chaotic game after Danny Mills gave Gavin Rose’s side the lead in the third minute before Ryan Gondoh in the tenth minute and Kyron Farrell five minutes later responded for the visitors.

Mills made it 2-2 in the 21st minute but Hampton took the lead again ten minutes after the break through Charlie Wassmer.

Ronnie Vint levelled for the hosts after an hour before Holland ensured the Hamlet had the final word.

Dulwich set the tempo early, forcing two corners. From the second, Mills was at the back post to head home Gio McGregor’s delivery.

The away side responded and former Millwall midfielder Farrell went close in the seventh minute but his free-kick went over Charlie Grainger’s crossbar.

The Beavers were level three minutes later when Niko Muir raced down the right to find Gondoh who evaded a challenge before firing past Grainger.

Gary McCann’s side continued to pile forward and when Jaydn Harris’ effort came off the post, Farrell was there to fire into an open goal.

The attacking action was relentless.

Six minutes after Farrell’s goal, winger Jordan Green found Darren McQueen arriving at the near post. He mis-kicked but managed to find McGregor whose shot was blocked and Mills was there to finish for his second of the game.

Alan Julian saved McGregor’s 25-yard shot before the visiting goalkeeper tipped over Holland’s header from McGregor’s corner.

Rose’s side had the chance to take the lead before half-time when Jordan Green was fouled, but Jordan Higgs missed from the spot as Julian dived low to his left to

McGregor fired the resultant freekick towards goal and Julian produced another save.

But it was no surprise that McGregor would again be involved as Dulwich grabbed the late winner. It was another

set-piece, Holland heading home to spark wild scenes in east Dulwich.

New loan signing from Crawley Town, Ricky German, almost added a fifth after running forward from halfway but the over-worked Julian denied him with another full-stretch save.

The result puts Dulwich sixth in the National League South table. The Hamlet were scheduled to be away at Havant & Waterlooville this Saturday, but the Hampshire side are in first-round FA Cup action against Charlton at The Valley.

Dulwich’s next league game is at home to Bath City on November 13.

Lee Armstrong got one back for the hosts when he fired home a free-kick from the edge of the box.

Joe Thomas then came on for Egleton with 20 minutes left as he returned from injury and picked up a yellow card for kicking the ball away. Barry had a shot palmed away from close range, and David Gabor’s effort was tipped over by the home stopper.

Borden committed a number of poor fouls late in the game. Montella was taken out from behind by a dangerous tackle on the halfway line as Peckham looked to counter. He then had his ankles kicked by the corner flag before, in injury-time, Emmanuel Cobbina had to go off injured following a tackle in the corner of the pitch.

The win combined with a draw from Hawkinge put the Menace back to the top of the league.

Peckham boss Mary Phillip praised her side’s “fight”.

She said: “I can’t ask for more than what

the guys put out there today. We have had an up-and-down roller coaster ride over the past few weeks and we just want to go out there and play.

“We are getting players back in after injury, and it’s great to see them back out there. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy with the intensity of the game we were up against with Borden.

“The fight was there, as well as the will to want to play and to take the opportunities that were there.

Menace back on top after feisty clash

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PECKHAM TOWN reclaimed top spot in the Kent County Premier Division after a 4-2 win in a controversial match at Borden Village last weekend.

The Menace were returning to Borden Village for the first time since a windswept day in March 2019, as the team had missed out in the two previous seasons due to the curtailed campaigns.

The visitors went in front after good pressing from their forwards to allow Josh Montella pounce on the loose ball and finish left-footed into the far-left corner.

Elton Romaku made an excellent save to keep Peckham in front but the hosts levelled in the 20th minute through Matt Rowe.

It didn’t take long for Peckham to regain the lead as Tidian Barry let fly from 30 yards and the ball took a deflection on the

way home.

Barry was then sent to the sin bin 30 minutes in after disputing the award of a free-kick on the edge of the box with the referee.

The eventual free-kick was deflected and Mustafa Hashemi then required lengthy treatment for a head injury following a reckless challenge.

The match restarted six minutes later before Peckham forced a series of corners late in the half and finally Montella got his second from Nicky Meta’s delivery.

Early in the second half Herve Mbongue went down on the edge of the box after anoff-the-ball incident. The assistant flagged it to the referee who decided a booking was sufficient. Mbongue struck the resultant free-kick off the crossbar.

But Peckham got their fourth an hour in. Nicky Meta delivered a free-kick in a pre-planned move with Charlie Egleton moving at pace to the near post to tap home from eight yards.

Stans’ unbeaten run ended

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD’S UNBEATEN start to the season came to an end last Saturday as they went down 2-1 to Tooting Bec in a top-of-thetable SCEFL First Division clash.

Panikos Oritis and Ed Mbango scored in the second half before Joe Borland’s last-minute consolation for the hosts.

In a tight, tense affair, Stansfeld thought they had taken an early lead when a Dan Parkinson corner was met on the volley by Macey Malyon but the ball flew just past the post with the goalkeeper beaten.

Malyon went close again moments later with a diving header from another Parkinson free-kick but again was off-target.

Tooting were always a threat and Charlie Cottrell produced a magnificent save to keep the scores level 30 minutes in.

The Stans were then denied by an offside decision just before half-time after Sam Smith had volleyed home Parkinson’s free-kick to the back post.

The visitors made the breakthrough nine minutes into the second half after Cottrell rushed out of his box and made a tackle, the ball falling perfectly for Oritis who finished into an empty net from 30 yards.

Stansfeld nearly equalized after good work from Malyon down the right. His pull-back found Ollie Milton who missed his kick but the ball fell to Borland in the box only for Tooting to block the effort.

Totting went 2-0 in front with five minutes left. As Stansfeld pushed for the equaliser they left themselves open at the back and Mbango took advantage to double the lead.

Borland then set up a tight finish when his lofted shot found the top corner.

And the home side almost got a late equalizer when a long free-kick into the Tooting box caused panic as Casey Killilea’s header back across goal looked like it was going to be turned home by Joe Minter at the far post, but again a Tooting body was there to block.

Stans are still top of the table, level on points with Tooting with a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Stansfeld Reserves went goal crazy winning 9-3 away at Otford.

Stansfeld 3rds went down 4-2 away against Erith & Belvedere Reserves.

Stansfeld 4ths continued their fine start to the season with a thumping 7-0 over Bexleyheath Lions.

By John Kellly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT spoke about taking the “next step” after Millwall’s 1-0 defeat at Huddersfield Town last Saturday.

It was in response to a question – possibly a harsh one – about whether his side tended to be inconsistent.

Given that this was just Millwall’s second defeat in eleven games you would

have understood if Rowett had balked a bit at it.

But he did acknowledge that when the Lions have had a chance to really push up the table twice recently, they fluffed it both times.

Millwall would have expected to beat Luton Town, especially on the back of a seven-game unbeaten run, but lost 2-0 at The Den. They went into the game against the Terriers last weekend level on points with Carlos Corberan’s side, but when a win would have lifted them into the playoffs they lost 1-0.

The Lions probably did enough for a point, though Corberan insisted only one team deserved to win.

In a game of few genuine goal-scoring opportunities, Huddersfield skipper Jonathan Hogg sent a neat glancing header past Bartosz Bialkowski from

at the far post. The centre-half struck a left-foot shot from six yards which looked destined to find the net but Bialkowski produced a superb save to keep the ball out.

In the 65th minute, the instrumental Lewis O’Brien drove at the heart of the Millwall defence through midfield. He slipped a clever pass through to Danel Sinani, who in turn found Duane Holmes.

Holmes picked out the unmarked Thomas on the right-hand side of the penalty box but he blazed high and wide over the crossbar.

There was a nagging suspicion that the Terriers would eventually make the breakthrough and so it proved with just eight minutes remaining.

It came after Ward’s fierce shot was expertly cleared off the line by Lions captain Shaun Hutchinson as the visitors scrambled the ball clear.

Meanwhile, another Millwall youngster, nineteen-year-old defender Arthur Penney, has made his debut in senior football.

Penney joined National League South side Welling United on a one-month loan deal last week and helped them to a clean sheet in their 1-0 win at home to Billericay Town last weekend.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GEORGE SAVILLE acknowledges there are higher expectations on Millwall than when he was last at the club – and he has backed the Lions to improve further.

Saville, 28, left Millwall for Middlesbrough after an eighth-place finish in their first season back in the Championship in 2017-18.

Former manager Neil Harris couldn’t improve on that as Millwall were 21st the following season and nineteenth when he left after ten games of the 2019-20 campaign.

Gary Rowett has led the side to consecutive top-half finishes and Millwall showed ambition to try to take the next step in the summer by signing players such as Saville, Daniel Ballard and Benik Afobe.

Team-mates from Saville’s previous permanent spell at the club like Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper have established themselves as quality Championship players, and Jed Wallace has been one of the best attackers in the division since the start of 2019-20.

Despite the Lions being within touching distance of the top six in recent weeks, the atmospheres at home

have often been tense.

Before facing Reading at The Den on Tuesday, Millwall were only three points off sixth.

“Obviously the expectations have gone up at Millwall. The squad’s got stronger over the last couple of years,” Saville said before the game against the Royals.

“I guess the fans want to see progression and for us to be higher up the table.

“In some games, like Luton and Stoke at home, we’ve started slowly. That’s not the Millwall way, especially at home.

Millwall’s always been fast-starting, get in people’s faces, make it difficult for teams to play against us.

“It’s on us players to do that and start home games better.

“The feeling around the place is we have got more to give. For the start we’ve had and the points we’ve got, with more room for us to improve, we’re in a good spot.

“We started to put wins on the board, turning draws into wins. “[The dressing room spirit] is just as good [as 2017-18]. Obviously the core of that team is still there. There are new players who have come in and are great personalities.

“For me the dressing room is fantastic, the boys are brilliant. Morale-wise you

couldn’t ask for any more.”

In that 2017-18 season, Saville played alongside Shaun Williams in midfield in a 4-4-2 formation and scored ten league goals.

He explained how his role now is slightly different tactically.

“In terms of how we’re playing here I’m playing a little bit deeper than I was before,” Saville said. “I had Shaun Williams and we knew what we were doing in terms of Moro [Steve Morison] and Gregs [Lee Gregory] up front, I joined up with them a lot.

“This time maybe it’s a little bit more tactical and we set up differently in terms of defensive shape.

“It’s a bit of a different role but it’s midfield, a lot of it is the same and I’m happy to do what I’m doing.

“I have played in a number of different positions for former clubs but when I’ve played at Millwall I’ve been in midfield and we’ve had success.

“I think the manager and the club looked at it and they wanted to bring a midfielder in and I ticked the boxes. For me it’s about having that consistency in the middle of the park.”

Saville returned to Millwall in the summer as a senior player compared to a relatively inexperienced one in his teens and then his early 20s the first three times he signed.

Does he feel any extra pressure to be a leader?

He responded: “Maybe not extra pressure, there is always pressure on you to do well, especially as I did well in my other spells here. I have to maintain those standards.

“The likes of Bristol at home, Sheff U, I like to think I have been putting in good performances. Obviously I’m more experienced now and the young players coming through, the likes of Danny Mac, Billy Mitchell, they’ll probably be looking at players like me who a few years ago were where they are now.

“Me, Jed Wallace, Jake Cooper, it’s good for us to take that responsibility and help the lads.

“Jed’s final product is really good now.

His numbers and stats – goals, assists, goal involvements – are fantastic.

“He’s done really well and has probably been Millwall’s best performer. Fair play to him and hopefully he keeps pushing on this year for us.”

Some of the Lions’ results this season have underlined again how unpredictable the Championship is.

Millwall take on bottom side Derby next – albeit Wayne Rooney’s side had twelve points deducted at the start of the season – but Saville knows fixtures mean little on paper.

“You can look at it but you can also

get a bit carried away with it as well,” he said. “No disrespect to Luton but if you look at Luton at home you’d think we’d win that.

“Then we go to Sheffield United and play Stoke at home and get six points from those games.

“We have to just think about us and how we perform. We know that if we’re at it and perform well then we can give anyone a game on our day.”

Saville has missed just one league game this season, when he was suspended for the 2-1 win at home to the Potters.

He knows there are situations when he will have to be slightly cynical to help the team out, though he might be keeping his mouth shut around referees for the rest of the campaign.

He said: “Yeah, if I’ve got to do it I’ve got to do it for the team, haven’t I? There was one at home against Coventry where they were on the counter and I just felt like I needed to take the yellow there and stop it at source.

“It’s part and parcel of the game for me. Obviously there are some silly bookings in there, the Swansea one was frustration in terms of what I said to the ref. But if I have to take a booking for the team I’m happy to do that.”

Cup date beckons for youngster Dan Moss

Yeovil take on Yate for place in second round EXCLUSIVE

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL DEFENDER Dan Moss is hoping for the perfect birthday present this weekend – victory in the first round of the FA Cup.

Right-back Moss turns 21 on Thursday (November 4) and will notch another milestone in his career if he plays for Yeovil Town against Yate Town in the oldest cup competition in the world.

Preston-born Moss has been a regular for the Glovers since joining on a loan deal from the Lions until November, which at the time of writing was set to be extended until January.

Moss was at Burnley for ten years before he was released in 2019 after his scholarship, despite being named scholar of the year.

At those awards in London, Millwall head of academy Scott Fitzgerald struck up a conversation with representatives from Burnley and a trial was arranged for Moss.

He impressed over three weeks and Professional Development Squad manager Kevin Nugent informed him he would be offered a professional deal.

He spent two seasons in Millwall’s under-23s, eventually captaining the side, before the opportunity came up to join National League Yeovil in the summer.

The Glovers defeated Weymouth on penalties in their fourth round qualifying replay, setting up a tie with seventh-tier Yate.

Moss can play in a number of positions, but has made the rightback spot his own this season and is hungry to learn.

“I try and watch the modern-day full-backs,” Moss told the News ahead of the FA Cup tie. “You’ve obviously got the more defensive ones but then also people like Trent Alexander Arnold who has just brought a totally different dynamic to playing rightback.

“I try to take a bit of everything, getting forward as much as I can.

That’s where the fitness side comes in, being able to defend but then also joining in with the attacks.

“It’s something I’m still working on and looking to get better at every day.

“Especially when you get to the wing-back role but even as a natural full-back getting up and down is very important.

“You’ve got that fitness side of the

game but you’ve got to bring in your quality in your one-v-one defending and then your final product to get the ball in the box.

“I suppose you could say that about every position [being good at everything]. But that’s what I base my game on.”

Like Alex Mitchell and Isaac Olaofe, Moss felt he needed to go into senior football after serving something of an apprenticeship with the under-23s.

It was a big move for him, Yeovil having been a Championship side as recently as 2013-14.

“When it came about you’ve got an idea of how big the club is, but it’s only when you get here you realise how big it really is, the ground, the history behind it,” Moss said. “I was buzzing to get it done coming here.

“I’d done two seasons in the 23s but that’s more the development side of your game. I was looking to get out on loan. When I got offered my deal last summer it was part of the plan for me to make the next step into senior and first-team football.

“Little things popped up here and there and when I heard Yeovil were interested it all happened quite quickly and the next couple of days I was down here training getting ready for the first game.”

The only slight disappointment this weekend is that he won’t face his Lions under-23 team-mate Junior Tiensia. Yate beat Tiensia’s Dover Athletic to reach this round for the first time in nine years.

“I can’t wait,” Moss said. “Obviously we had the last round but it’s a bit different being in the first round proper. I can’t wait for the game, I’m excited more than anything.

“I was looking forward to meeting up with Junior, it would have been a good game, but anything can happen in the FA Cup. “We’ve got a big game now against Yate, we’re preparing for it and hopefully we can get what we want on Saturday.”

Glovers boss Darren Sarll will not allow any complacency to creep in against a team two tiers below them in the Southern League Premier Division South.

Moss added: “He says you think of their top performance and you can add another 40 per cent on to that at least because of who they’re playing.

“You’ve got to prepare yourselves, you’ve got to respect them and be ready for it. We do our own stuff, play our own game. We’ve got to bring that on to the pitch and hopefully we can progress through to the next round.”

Confidence is key for any striker.

Even Harry Kane, whom many consider the world’s best centreforward, is finding it tough going at the moment.

Afobe’s previous two goals this season had come in August in defeats against Fulham and Cardiff. But he produced a typical poacher’s effort against Reading to lift Millwall level on points with sixth before Wednesday’s games.

With bottom club Derby at The Den next, a win could see the Lions in the top six before the third

international break of the season. Not bad considering there hasn’t been a fully fit squad for any of the opening sixteen games of the league season.

There were 11,004 fans inside The Den on Tuesday night and many of them might have wanted to go home at half-time having watched a dire first half from two teams it seemed were happy to play keep-ball in midfield.

Jed Wallace had the first opportunity, calling Luke Southwood into action to keep out his well-struck 25-yard free-kick. The young goalkeeper had to be on his toes a few minutes later, smothering the ball at the feet of Afobe who had been played in by Wallace.

A flurry of chances did arrive at the end of a drab opening 45 minutes.

Billy Mitchell shot wide from distance before Ovie Ejaria fired across the face of goal for the visitors, who despite keeping the ball for long periods could make no inroads on a changed four-man Lions defence.

That four was switched to a five at half-time, the opposite of the formation change that proved decisive in the last home game against Stoke.

Scott Malone and Mason Bennett were introduced replacing Matt Smith and Maikel Kieftenbeld – the latter had been booked and committed a couple

of other fouls.

The second half was a big improvement from the home side: Malone and Bennett’s introductions changed the game.

Malone is a very attacking player and he showed the real benefits of five at the back and his wing-back role. There had been little threat from wide positions in the first half, making it easy for the Reading back three. Malone was straight into the action forcing Southwood into a save before, just seconds later, he found George Saville but the midfielder’s deflected effort landed comfortably in the hands of the Reading stopper.

Some Millwall fans have felt that 5-2-3 at home is too conservative and has resulted in the side not playing attacking football – but the second period was one of the most attacking displays from the Lions this season.

It was wave after wave of attack, as Bennett was denied by the impressive Southwood who on his own was keeping the visitors in the game.

Being under pressure for that long, it felt inevitable that the goal would come and on 71 minutes it did. Wallace’s ball into the channel found Ryan Leonard and just as he had for Tom Bradshaw against Stoke in the previous home game, he

deservedly make breakthrough played a perfectly-weighted cross in to Afobe, who couldn’t miss to break the deadlock and give the Lions a deserved lead.

They did not stop there. The attacks continued. Malone went close twice more, and there were efforts from Bennett, Leonard and Mitchell that all had Southwood worried, but in the end one was enough.

The visitors failed to register a shot on target in what was their fourth defeat in a row. John Swift, though, wasted a glorious chance to pull Veljko Paunovic’s side level when the ball fell to him but be blazed over the bar. Not the result the self-isolating Paunovic – who tested positive for Covid-19 on Monday – was hoping to see from one of his star men.

The result means the Lions have now won five of their last seven Championship games, but it still feels like there is more to come from this side. It doesn’t yet feel like we’ve seen the best that this group can offer.

They have remained within touching distance of the top six for most of the season and this result left them outside the play-off places only on goal difference.

Despite Afobe’s goal, Millwall are still lacking in that area. They had seventeen efforts on Tuesday, five

To put that into perspective, Fulham’s Aleksandar Mitrovic has scored eighteen goals on his own.

Once again it is the solid defence that is key to Millwall winning games. Only the top three, Bournemouth, Fulham and West Brom, have conceded fewer than the Lions.

If Millwall are around this position in January they will surely aim to sign another attacker to try to help them take the next step.

It’s a fourth win at The Den this season in the league. Last season, wins at home were tough to come by without the crowd. That has changed recently and crucially Millwall are now winning games they may have

A strong second-half performance had the crowd roaring. Repeat that against crisis club Derby on Saturday and the current feel-good factor could continue.

The second-tier has had a familiar pattern in recent seasons, with clubs such as Norwich and Fulham bouncing between divisions.

Currently, Bournemouth who are top and Fulham and West Bromwich Albion in second and third have been Premier League sides within the last two seasons, the last two relegated in 2020-21.

It is almost inconceivable that Millwall could challenge teams that have benefitted from tens of millions in Premier League parachute payments.

Yet before Wednesday’s games the Lions were only four points off the Baggies.

But Barrett wasn’t about to suggest a challenge for automatic promotion was a possibility when asked about the difficulty of bridging the gap to sides like that.

“Of course it’s difficult because of the financial power those clubs have got compared to us,” Barrett said. “They’ve been up in the Premier League, they’ve got topquality players.

“It’s difficult but we’re not looking at that. We’re looking at it game by game to keep chipping away picking points up when you can.

“We’ve been on a really strong run over the last ten or eleven games and we want to continue that.”

It’s to Millwall’s huge credit that they have managed to turn tight games like this from draws into wins in the last couple of months.

They drew four games in a row in September – making it six in nine for the season – and boss Gary Rowett acknowledged they needed to tag a couple of wins on to that run to turn it into a good sequence.

Since then, they have won five of

their last seven to push themselves into contention for the play-off spots more than a third of the way into the season.

Barrett admitted that run of draws was concerning.

He said: “We know we’ve drawn a lot and that’s frustrating, we’ve done a lot of work and spoken about it an awful lot.

“We’ve been a really hard team to beat, a really difficult Championship side to come up against.

“It’s just turning those key moments in games, that little bit of quality that can turn a draw into a win. Thankfully over a recent period we’ve managed to do that.

It’s so important.

“The pleasing thing is we’re always in games, it’s very rare that we’re out of a game. It’s just nice over the last month or so we’re turning those draws into wins.”

Millwall have the top six in their sights, which is around what they would have targeted at this point in the season.

Suggestions they should be closer to the top three are fanciful.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ASSISTANT manager Adam Barrett didn’t deny the Lions could look to add to their forward options in January – after striker Benik Afobe’s winner against Reading on Tuesday night.

Afobe scored his third goal of the season as Millwall bounced back from their defeat at Huddersfield Town last weekend.

But that was only the Lions’ sixteenth league goal of the season in sixteen games, making them the joint-lowest scorers with Preston of the top 20 teams in the Championship before Wednesday’s games.

Barrett was asked if the Lions will aim

to recruit more firepower in January’s transfer window.

“We know we haven’t scored as many goals as we would have liked,” Barrett acknowledged. “We’re always looking to improve, of course. We’re in a really good position, we’re delighted with where we are at the moment.

“I think we can play better, I don’t think we’ve really hit top form this season so far. We’ve done it in patches.

“We’re looking to improve all the time.

We haven’t been in the division that many years and we’re progressing every year, improving and developing.

“You just never know where it can take you. We’re pleased where we are at the moment, we’re in a good position.

“Confidence is starting to build. We’ve got a good squad, they’re a great set of lads to work with.

“There are a lot of games and a lot of points to play for. We’re doing okay at the moment but we’re not getting carried away.

“We’ve got to maintain that focus and look forward to the next game.”

With only George Evans and Daniel Ballard out injured, there was no place in the squad for Ben Thompson, Jon Dadi Bodvarsson or Connor Mahoney against the Royals.

Barrett was also asked if that trio could be headed for January exits.

He said: “We’ll see, we’ve got a very strong squad. There’s a lot of competition for places and everyone is working extremely hard.

“Unfortunately you can’t pick everyone, that’s the whole point. Every squad across the division would all have the same sort of issues.

“But they’re great lads, they’re training hard. You can’t pick everyone, there’s great competition there so we’ll see what happens further down the line.”

Millwall face Derby at The Den this Saturday. The Rams are bottom of the league, but would not be in the relegation zone had it not been for a twelve-point deduction this season.

Barrett added: “They’ve done really well, they’ve shown a lot of resolve.

They’ve picked points up and it’s going to be another difficult game, they’ve got good players.

“They’re fighting for their lives. Again, there’s no easy game in this division so we’ve got to make sure we’re at it Saturday because if we’re not then we’ll get turned over.

“It’s another big game and they’re a dangerous side.”

Gary Rowett’s side host Derby at The Den on Saturday before the third two-week breather of the season for Premier League and Championship clubs.

The Lions started the season slowly before a run of four wins in five games gave them the chance to move into the play-off places last weekend, but they lost 1-0 to Huddersfield Town.

One issue that persists is that Millwall are still one of the lowest scorers in the second tier. A criticism from some fans is that 5-23 is too defensive. Saville doesn’t necessarily agree.

“With 5-2-3 it’s how you want to look at it,” he said. “A 5-2-3 is a 3-4-3 as well with three forward players,” Saville said.

“It depends how you play. If you sit off you’re setting up with a back five, it can be difficult to get out and it can be defensive.

“But I think the position we’re in in the league shows something is working. The points we’ve got on the board so far is good.

“We are going to improve, it’s not going to all click straightaway. We need to obviously trust the manager and his ideas, and buy into it, and I think we’re moving in the right direction.”
