Southwark Council currently supports 130 families, who have about 220 children between them, she said. Most of these families are single-parent. Families are usually reliant on council support for about two years before the Home Office gives them a more permanent status in the UK, she said - although it can take much longer.

Cllr Ali, who is the council’s cabinet member for children, young people and education, told the Work and Pensions select committee last Wednesday (October 20) of her worries about the children in families who have no recourse to public funds.

“I’ve got statutory responsibility for safeguarding all of our children in Southwark,” she told committee members in a session on children in families with no recourse to public funds. “It’s a wonder that I can sleep at night really… we need to be safeguarding children”.

Most of the money the council spends on these families who have ‘no recourse to public funds’ goes towards housing, according to deputy leader Cllr Jasmine Ali, who spoke to a parliamentary committee last week.

‘No recourse to public funds’ means people are ineligible for statutory support even if they have the right to live and work in the UK, and may have been in previous employment.

Local authorities are responsible by law for supporting these people and get no extra money from central government to cover the added strain on their finances.

Report lays bare life expectancy in Southwark - men die on average twelve years earlier in Peckham than in Dulwich

Cllr Jasmine Ali In an impassioned address to the committee via videolink, she called for the Home Office to put in place “proper funding streams to fund charities, to fund local authorities for their efforts in supporting these families and to make sure that children don’t fall through the cracks.”

Cllr Ali added her concerns that economic pressures driven by the Covid-19 pandemic may have forced more people with no recourse to public funds to slip into “destitution”.

She called for the Home Office to speed up the process of giving people a more settled status in the UK, which she described as “punitive”.

“There’s no rhyme or reason to any of this but one thing that we do know is the majority of families that we support who are stuck in this no man’s land end up getting leave to remain, or they end up getting the restrictions for no recourse to public funds taken off them.”

Cllr Ali added that the council struggled to house families in good temporary accommodation, despite its ambitious

social housebuilding programme.

The housing people are put in is “quite often quite crowded... and not always in Southwark,” she said.

“The big issue is that because of the scarcity of housing we’re having to use very expensive temporary accommodation, which isn’t as adequate as we would want for our families,” she added.

Several other local councils were represented at the committee meeting.

Manchester City Council spent about £1m on families with no recourse to public funds, committee members heard.

A spokesperson for the Home Office said: "The provision of no recourse to public funds has been upheld by successive governments and maintains that those coming to the UK should do so on a basis that prevents burdens on the taxpayer.

"There are safeguards in place to ensure vulnerable migrants who are destitute and have community care needs, including issues relating to human rights or the wellbeing of children, can receive support."

Do you want to own part of a new walworth boozer?

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk A Walworth community group is encouraging residents to come forward with ideas for a campaign to found a new community pub in the area.

Citing successful examples such as the Ivy House in Nunhead, The Walworth Society feel that a community pub could help bring a new unique flavour of drinking establishment to the area, as well as including those who may feel left out of modern pubs.

A community pub is one where, unlike a traditional private business model, all of the profits are put back into either the upkeep of the pub, or the community as a whole.

Matthew Meynell from the Walworth Society, (pictured), said: “There is a growing movement for community pubs across the country. It allows you to save valued community assets.

“It’s a really interesting model, and it’s successful. Of 133 community pubs across the country, only one has failed.”

The Walworth Society are encouraging interested members of the community to get in touch by emailing walworthcommunitypub@gmail.com They are keen to hear from those who have stories of historic Walworth pubs and what they feel makes a great community pub - as well as from those who may have helpful skills, such as business planning, fundraising and community engagement.

Following an engagement event on September 19 to gauge interest in the possibility of a pub, Matthew is confident that the community is engaged by the idea.

In three hours, the Walworth Society sold around 150 beers (pints and halves) to around 100 customers, and Matthew reported strong support from everyone they spoke to on the concept of a community owned pub.

Visitors to the event were encouraged to write their thoughts on what makes a good pub on a chalkboard.

Results included “good chips,” “nice people,” “a fireplace,” “a pub cat” and, slightly bafflingly, “unicorns.”

A recurring theme throughout the event was the idea of a “proper pub.” Customers felt that a friendly atmosphere and chatting with strangers was something that they were missing in more modern pubs.

Matthew gave the example of the Ravensbourne Arms in Lewisham as a good approach to a community pub. Notfor-profit organisation Sister Midnight is currently crowdfunding to raise the initial startup costs for the business, and has currently raised £55,980 of a £500,000 target.

By donating, members of the community can own a share in the business, and contribute to the way it is run.

“The way they’ve done it, you can donate between £100 and £100,000,” he

said, “and everyone gets one share, one vote. Then you form a committee from there. It’s properly democratic.

“Walworth is a great area, there’s some good pubs - but based on the engagement event we did, there’s a sense that some people are feeling left behind with the way pubs are going.

“The idea of having a place that people can genuinely mix in and are a little bit more open is really nice.

“You can have a more healthy relationship with alcohol as well - it’s not just a wet-led pub, there are more alcoholfree options.

“There’s no specific site in mind yet. Right now the aim is to build a representative group of people with appropriate skills, so we can pull together a business plan and identify an appropriate site.”

Southwark has seen a reduction in pubs of 23 per cent over the last 20 years.

Meanwhile, there are 5.4 pubs per 10,000 people in Southwark - below the national average of 5.8.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk An 82-year-old Dulwich widower has been forced to spend two weeks in a flat that repeatedly floods with his neighbours’ waste water.

Since Wednesday, October 13, over half of John Spencer flat on Overhill Road has been ruined with grease, fats and water from fifteen other flats overflowing from the kitchen sink and washing machine, seemingly caused by a blockage in the mains pipe.

At time of writing, the housing association responsible for the flat Southern Housing Group had finally sent a contractor to the flat to fix the problem, but the damage to the flat remains.

John (pictured right) lost his wife of nearly 50 years in August last year, his son Mark said. “My father’s in pieces. He has to sleep on the sofa because his bedroom is ruined. If you see him now from a couple of weeks ago, he looks like a different person.

“He’s got heart issues, and he’s been there on his hands and knees trying to mop up. I’ve been doing it, all of our family

has been trying to help.

“I know there’s been a lot going on about social housing issues, but until it affects you, you don’t actually realise.”

Mark was the first to discover the flooding when he stayed at John’s house two weeks ago. Neither Mark nor his father had been in the flat for a couple of days.

“When I first opened the front door, there was a strange smell,” Mark said.

“The flat is split across three levels. The first, the sitting room, was fine. When I went down to the kitchen on the next level, everything was covered in water, and oil, and grease and fats.

“It’s ruined the lower two floors of the property. In the kitchen there’s a big stack pipe that goes through the building and that had got blocked and everything had come through.

“Any time the fifteen flats above use their baths, their sinks, their washing machines, he’s getting all the water.

“It’s ruined two bedrooms, the toilet, the staircases, and the electricity is out in the kitchen.”

Mark immediately contacted Southern Housing Group. They responded by sending out a plumber with a bucket.

‘Allergic 3-year-old forced to live with bedbugs’ says mum

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The mother of a three-year-old girl in Bermondsey - who is allergic to bedbugs but has had to live with the blood-sucking parasites for more than a year - has said she feels like she is hitting her head against a brick wall.

Cheryl Green lives with her three-year-old daughter and three other children under the age of twelve on the Rennie Estate on Rotherhithe New Road.

She first realised she had bedbugs in her council flat in summer 2020 and called Southwark’s pest control team for help.

Since then, she said, council workers have been to the property four times to eliminate the parasite infestation, but with little success.

Cheryl said the most recent time council workers came round, one told her that they would be coming back in two weeks in case there were any eggs that hadn’t hatched yet and would need to be caught. Unlike

bedbugs, the eggs can be invisible to the naked eye.

But Cheryl said that this worker was the first person who suggested coming back for a follow-up visit, despite it being the fourth time the pest control team had been round - suggesting council staff may have missed opportunities to get rid of the bedbugs much earlier.

As a result of the bedbug bites, her little daughter’s arms have been swelling up, and her skin has been flaring up and getting very itchy. Cheryl called the doctor, who said that her daughter was allergic to bedbug bites. She has been treating her with antihistamines, which was the doctor’s advice.

But Cheryl said she was worried her daughter could have an even more serious reaction to the bites. “If they bite her in the wrong place what’s going to happen?”, she asked. Anaphylaxis, a very severe kind of reaction that can be deadly, is a rare but possible consequence of bedbug allergies, according to the NHS. Meanwhile Cheryl’s ten-year-old son is also suffering, she said. He is autistic and suffers from anxiety. He struggles to sleep knowing that there are bedbugs in the flat that could bite him.

The whole ordeal has taken its toll on Cheryl as well. “It’s messing with my mental health,” she said. “I feel like I’m going to cry.

I feel like I’m hitting my head against a brick wall now. I just want them to sort out the problem.”

She said she has asked the council to move her and her family into temporary accommodation, but had been denied.

Southwark Council was contacted for comment but did not reply by the time of publication.

The flat continued to flood every day and John felt completely forgotten about

by Southern Housing. He eventually hired private company Pimlico Plumbing to try to get the problem fixed, paying a total of nearly £2,000 of his own money.

The private plumbers found several water bottles and what appeared to be a metal lid blocking the pipe.

However, they were not able fully to fix the problem, and the flat has flooded another three times since.

Services Director (South) at Southern Housing Group, said: “I was very sorry to hear about the flooding that occurred in Mr Spencer’s home. The safety and wellbeing of our residents is always our priority.

“Since being alerted to the situation, we took action to ensure the property is safe and habitable. The building is old, which means that locating the underlying causes of problems can take longer. However, the cause has been located and the necessary work took place on October 26.

“We understand the frustration and disruption this situation has caused, and we are talking with Mr Spencer about his expenses and about additional works to his home.”

‘moment of relief’ for residents hit with £2.6M cladding bill

charles@southwarknews.co.uk A family faced with losing their home after being landed with an eye-watering bill for cladding works have been given a moment of relief as the works have been delayed.

Leaseholders of Walworth-based Oyster Court still face a bill totalling £2.6 million for fire safety works in the latest in a series of major cladding overhauls, as reported by the News two weeks ago.

However, last week Oyster Court resident, primary school teacher and mother-of-four Emma McGovern received good news when she heard that the housing association responsible, Optivo, intended to delay the works that would cost her family £85,000.

Optivo cite the large number of enquiries from residents of Oyster Court as the reason for the delay. The company has also faced considerable media backlash for the £2.6 million bill that had been passed onto leaseholders.

Emma said: “We are delighted that Optivo has chosen to delay the costly remediation works to allow for more discussions with residents.

“We hope these discussions will be profitable and that all avenues will be explored, full cost revealed and we can come to a mutual agreement on how to make the building fire safe without having to be burdened with life-changing debts.”

Emma also speculated that the delay may have been announced to allow time for Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak to announce his 2021 budget, which was unveiled yesterday.

This is because key to the controversy surrounding Oyster Court’s bill was whether or not residents qualified for government loans with a maximum repayment of £50 per month, which were put in place to help leaseholders in their position.

When Oyster Court residents were hit with the massive bill, it was not clear if they would qualify for this loan, potentially leaving them with no financial support to reach the enormous cost.

However, this may change with the new budget announcement.

Explaining the decision to delay fire safety works, Optivo said: “We’re continuing to do everything we can to keep our residents safe in their building.

“We’ve received a large volume of enquiries from our Oyster Court residents, with many wanting further clarity around why we’re carrying out fire remediation works to the façade.

"We feel it’s sensible to wait a few more weeks so we can meet and speak to residents further and address any outstanding concerns.

"Our evidence shows work is required

at Oyster Court to reduce the fire safety risk. Fire engineers have confirmed the interim measures we have in place at the building will keep our residents safe until remediation work to the façade is complete.

"We’ve promised to contact residents by Friday 26 November with further details around when we’ll be carrying out the works.”

The News asked Optivo why the works were still needed if the block had been deemed safe enough to leave the flats as they are for now.

Optivo responded by saying: “We’ve interim measures in place to help mitigate the increased risk of external fire spread until the remediation works are completed.

These include a change of evacuation strategy from ‘stay put’ to ‘simultaneous evacuation’, which is why we’ve installed a temporary fire detection and alert system.

A change to simultaneous evacuation should only be temporary. This has been made clear in guidance issued by the National Fire Chiefs Council."

New Dulwich ‘listening post’ tells story of Edward Alleyn

The Dulwich Society installed the solarpowered post that tells the story of Edward Alleyn, the seventeenth century actor, businessman, and founder of local schools, on the Old College Green on Tuesday, October 12.

Southwark among boroughs with most ‘waking watches’ Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk More buildings in Southwark need 'waking watches' because of fire safety concerns than in almost any other borough in London, new figures show.

The latest data from the London Fire Brigade (LFB) shows that Southwark has 71 buildings with trained staff patrolling to look for fires, behind only Tower Hamlets - far ahead with 162 - and Hackney, with 86. Greenwich also has 71 buildings with waking watches in place.

Neighbouring boroughs Lambeth and Lewisham are not far behind, with 66 and 57 blocks with waking watches respectively. Some 1053 buildings in total across London have the round-the-clock patrol system in place.

The figures, published last week by Sadiq Khan's office in response to a question by Labour London Assembly member Anne Clarke, are correct as of September 15 this year, and could have changed since then.

Waking watches can be extremely expensive

and are another headache on top of the many other problems faced by leaseholders in buildings deemed a fire risk because of construction defects, such as unsafe cladding.

Southwark's Labour London Assembly member Marina Ahmad described the situation facing leaseholders in unsafe buildings as "a scandal of unprecedented proportions".

Writing in a column last month, she added: "With the government and developers failing to put in the financial support needed to make these homes safe, leaseholders are also footing the eye-watering costs for remediation works, rising insurance premiums and EWS1 forms." EWS1 forms determine whether there are dangerous materials in a building and leaseholders in blocks over eighteen metres need one to sell.

Camberwell's Marie Curie House, in the Sceaux Gardens Estate, is among the buildings that needs a waking watch after fire safety defects were discovered late last year.

The patrol in the 'sister block' to Lakanal House, where six people died in a devastating fire in 2009, will cost more than £500,000 and will last from November 2020 to June 2022.

To listen to the history of Alleyn, you press a button on the post and an actor playing him talks about his life and explains how he came to buy the manor of Dulwich.

It also says how he set up his charity, which later led to the foundation of several schools including Dulwich College and James Allen's Girls School.

The Dulwich Society held a ceremony, including a talk from local historian Brian Green and a performance of eighteenth century Baroque organ music.

Man charged with murder of Gary Mayhew

charles@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been arrested and charged for the fatal shooting of a Camberwell man in Brixton last week.

At approximately 6:15am on Thursday, 21 October, police were notified that Gary Mayhew, 25, was in hospital with gunshot injuries. Gary passed away later that afternoon. His next of kin have been informed.

Trevin Campbell, 31 of Kingswood Avenue, Thornton Heath was arrested for the murder on Monday, October 25.

He appeared in custody at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court yesterday, charged with Gary’s murder.

“Our thoughts remain with Gary’s family at this devastating time,” said Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove, who is responsible for policing in Lambeth and Southwark.

“I am saddened that we have lost another life to gun violence. I understand the shock and concern this incident has caused among the local community and I want to reassure residents that specialist officers are working tirelessly to determine who is responsible for this.

“Additional officers will be patrolling in and around the local area and I urge anyone with concerns to please approach them and speak to them.”

A post-mortem conducted on Saturday, 23 October found the cause of Gary’s death to have been a gunshot wound to the leg.

Police believe that the shooting took place around Belinda Road, SW9 shortly after 6am.

In addition to Trevin Campbell, a 27-year-old man and a 37-yearold man were arrested after being stopped on Asylum Road, Peckham, on Thursday evening to assist police with

their investigation. After being taken to central London police stations, both men were released on bail to return in late November.

An incident room has opened under Detective Chief Inspector Mark Rogers, who said: “If you were in the area of Belinda Road at around 6am on Thursday, 21 October and you saw or heard anything suspicious then please come forward and speak to us.

“I am also keen to speak to any road users who may have captured events on dash-cam – please check your footage and call us if you think you can help.

Crackdown on youths setting off fireworks

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A 50-year-old man died in the McDonald's on Old Kent Road on Friday evening, October 22.

Eyewitnesses described several emergency service vehicles outside the restaurant from about 6pm. The man's death is not being treated as suspicious, police said.

A spokesperson for the Met said: "Police were called at approximately 17:55hrs on Friday, 22 October to reports of a man found unresponsive at a restaurant in Old Kent Road, SE1.

"Officers attended and provided emergency first aid until the arrival of London Ambulance Service. A 50-year-old man was subsequently pronounced dead at the scene.

"The death is not being treated as suspicious and officers will assist with preparing a report for the coroner."

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 6.04pm on Friday to reports of a person unwell in Old Kent Road, Southwark.

“We sent an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car, an advanced paramedic and an incident response officer to the scene. Sadly the patient died at the scene.”

McDonald's was contacted for comment but did not respond by the time of publication.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two people have been given formal warnings after admitting setting off fireworks dangerously and illegally earlier this month in Rotherhithe.

Recent dispersal order imposed

The incident took place on October 4. Rotherhithe's safer neighbourhood policing team said: "Police identified the two suspects via CCTV. Both males were interviewed under caution.

"After being shown overwhelming evidence they admitted the offence.

Both were then issued with formal warnings."

The age of the two male suspects is unconfirmed, but police have previously said they think culprits are in their early teenage years.

Officers have said this year they are determined to be more proactive in stopping fireworks being set off in the street, after being surprised by a dangerous escalation in autumn 2020.

It comes after police issued dispersal zones for a wide area around Canada Water tube station from last Friday to Sunday evening in an attempt to deal with the firework problem. That was the second weekend in three when police have issued a dispersal order for the same area.

The dispersal order started on Friday evening, October 22, at 8pm and ran

for 48 hours until Sunday evening, October 23, at 7.59pm. It covers the same area as the dispersal order police put in place from October 8-10.

The order allows police to tell people they think have taken part or will take part in criminal or anti-social behaviour to leave the area.

Other measures the police have taken include stop and search operations, working more closely with Southwark Council and British Transport Police and maximising contacts in the local community, including schools, to preemptively identify culprits.

Children under the age of eighteen cannot buy fireworks legally. Police think adults have been buying fireworks and passing or selling them on to children near local schools.

Checks on local shops have not found them to be making illegal sales.

Inspector Tom Cornish, the Met Police’s neighbourhood inspector for Southwark, said that police think the group of teenagers this year is different from the culprits who were involved in autumn 2020, although they probably belong to the same 13-15 age group.

Some people living outside the dispersal order zone in Rotherhithe and on Jamaica Road in Bermondsey said they were concerned that the same problems were affecting them but that they had less protection from police.

Dulwich laundrette’s moggy dies after being ‘mauled’ by dog at her lordship lane spot Vet says Bissey had a bleed in her liver, broken ribs, and a dislodged bone in her spine Exclusive

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk A beloved Dulwich cat was brutally killed by a dog on the street on October 10, prompting its owners to consider petitioning a change in the law on aggressive dogs.

Thirty-five-year-old Sarah Coe was working in the Wash & Dry laundrette on Lordship Lane when, at around 3pm, she heard someone shouting, “let her go!”

She ran outside to find the shop’s widely-adored 22-year-old cat Bissey in the jaws of a dog.

“All I could see was just her head sticking out,” said Sarah. “I just went running out, while the dog owner started punching the dog in the head to try and release her.

“When she got out, Bissey hid underneath a car on the street.

“I was trying to get her out, but that’s when I knew she was seriously hurt because she wasn’t reacting to me touching her - and she always would.”

Eventually Sarah managed to rescue Bissey from beneath the car and rush her to the vet.

“Her head was flopping, her tongue was out, and she was choking. Her tongue was going blue, and by this point I was crying.

“When we got to the vet, he said he didn’t know how I had kept Bissey alive

for so long, she was in such a bad way.”

The owner of the cat and the laundrette, Carl Worth, was called. After examining Bissey, the vet found she had a bleed in her liver, broken ribs, and a dislodged bone in her spine.

“I was pleading with the vets, saying it wasn’t her time to go,” said Sarah. “She was still full of life - there was nothing that would get rid of her.

“It was about 6.40 when they put her to sleep. I laid next to her as they did it and said, I’ll get her justice.

“Bissey was so loved. We’ve had kids coming into the laundrette asking: 'where’s the cat, where’s the cat?’ I can’t tell them the truth.

“The community has been so lovely. A customer and a friend came in and they had made this pendant for her. It says Forever Loved. Carl and me burst into tears when she showed us.

“It was so hard opening the shop without her. We cried all day. I keep going to fill up her water bowl.

"She used to know the sound of my car engine when I arrived to work and come out miaowing. She always loved people coming to the laundrette."

Bissey used to sit atop the washing machines to greet customers as they came in.

Since the attack, Sarah has spoken to others who have seen their pets attacked by aggressive dogs, In one such example, a Staffordshire Terrier had to have 30 stitches after it was also attacked by an aggressive dog.

This has led Sarah to consider petitioning the government to change the law and amend the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 to include sanctions on dogs that attack other pets.

Under the Dangerous Dog Act, it is an offence for a dog to attack a service

animal, such as a guide dog, but not someone else’s pet - despite evidence to suggest that if a dog is willing to attack other animals, it may be at risk of attacking humans.

Sarah has therefore not been able to secure any compensation or legal action for Bissey’s death, or any way to refund the £1,000 it cost the owner Carl for the three hours Bissey spent in the vet after the attack.

Earlier this year the News reported on an attack by three dogs in Norwood which prompted a petition to summon community support and encourage local authorities to take the incident seriously.

Like the recent killing of Bissey, this attack raised questions over the effectiveness of the Dangerous Dogs Act in protecting against vicious dogs.

Peckham woman sets up forum after falling victim to the crime

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Spiking drinks is an enormous problem underrepresented by the stats, claims a Peckham woman who has created an online safe space to share stories of being spiked.

In February 2020, 23-year-old Mair Howells had her drink spiked in a bar in Peckham. She was left with a split chin, cut wrists, a concussion, and no memory of the night before.

Speaking to her family and friends about the event, Mair realised how commonplace it was for women to experience spiking. Her sister had been spiked two months before in east London, and when Mair went to have her concussion treated, her nurse had also been spiked in the past.

"That's when I had to ask - how often is this happening?" said Mair.

"I realised how widespread this is, and nothing's being done about it.

"There's next to nothing online, so

I just thought, why not make a space where people can share information?

It's a safe space for people to tell their stories, and a point of information."

Mair founded @ivebeenspiked, an online platform for stories of spiking and safety information.

The online forum has since expanded, and now provides posters for clubs and bars across the country with key information about the dangers of spiking and how to spot it.

Now she is also running an online petition for an urgent review into drink spiking, to make testing more available and to increase training and education around drink spiking.

The petition is currently at just under 6,000 signatures, with a target of 7,500.

The push comes at a time of increased scruitny of the issue at a national level.

The availability of testing emerges as a key part of the battle against spiking.

"Right now," said Mair, "if your drink's been spiked, you call the police, and they'll tell you to go to the hospital for a blood test. The hospital will say that

they can't do forensic testing there.

"So, you go back to the police, who say they can't report the crime without a blood test. By that time, the drugs have probably left your system anyway, and the crime goes unreported.

"The facts and figures for spiking are way higher than we can even imagine because so many crimes are going unreported.

"We need better access to testing. If the problem is that people can't report it because of the lack of testing, then we need better testing."

She also argued that awareness and training will be crucial to help deal with spiking.

"If someone's had their drink spiked, they can't exactly tell you," she said.

"Everyone needs to be aware of the symptoms of spiking so that they can spot it if it happens to their friends."

Symptoms listed on @ivebeenspiked posters include nausea, short term memory loss, confusion, hallucinations, and a loss of feeling in the body.

Spiking is a highly traumatic and threatening prospect for women on a night out. Mair stated that the drink that likely led to her own spiking was out of her sight for just a "split-second" while she turned to pass them to her friends.

Rob Hisee and Ted Lawlor, who both grew up in the area and continue to live there, are selling their “revolutionary guided journal” that claims to help readers achieve what they want in life through the power of positive thinking.

Manifestation - the idea of thinking positively to make positive things happen in your life - has grown in popularity in recent years. Celebrities like talk show host Oprah Winfrey and actor Jim Carrey have endorsed the concept, but it has also regularly been criticised as pseudo-science.

Rob, who describes himself as the UK’s top unconscious mind therapist, dismissed this. “It ain’t no hocuspocus,” he said. “It’s based on science.”

He went on: “People who don’t believe in it - are they having a great life? Are they living in an emotional state of freedom?

“You might not believe in the law of gravity, but you’re still going to hit the f*cking floor.”

He wrote the book with Ted, 23, who said he got interested in the idea after suffering from depression.

Ted, who grew up near the Blue market, said: “I was manifesting without even realising. There were times when I was standing on the train station with my feet over the platform, because I was depressed from work.

Rob told me about it. Ever since then it’s changed my life.”

Rob provided much of the content for the book while Ted, who has a first-class degree in marketing, put it together and designed it. “He’s mustard at computers,” Rob said. “I’m dyslexic and he’s good at grammar.”

The News previously reported on Rob curing a woman’s debilitating agoraphobia and anxiety with one of his three-hour therapy sessions.

£5m in Rotherhithe tunnel fines Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Drivers paid out a whopping £5 million in fines for taking the wrong kinds of vehicles through the Rotherhithe Tunnel in the first eight months of the year, new figures show.

Transport for London (TfL) handed out some 75,387 fines to drivers who broke restrictions on the 113-year-old tunnel from the start of January to the end of August. Each penalty charge notice is £130, but if you pay within two weeks the charge drops to £65.

Assuming everyone who was fined paid quickly enough to qualify for the lower charge, TfL would have raked in about £4.9m. It's unlikely that every driver paid up within two weeks, so the real amount the transport agency made is probably above £5m.

Fines started out at about 1,000 per week in early January, before growing steadily and plateauing at between 2,000 and 3,000 fines per week from mid-February until the end of August.

London mayor Sadiq Khan published the figures in response to a question by the Lib Dem London Assembly member and former Southwark Council deputy leader Caroline Pidgeon.

Khan's office said that all of the money that comes in through fines is reinvested into London's transport network, not just the tunnel itself, which is in urgent need of repairs.

Pidgeon, who chairs the London Assembly's transport committee, told the News: "With 76,000 Penalty Charge Notices awarded in the first eight

months of this year, at least £5 million in fines, there is no doubt this is a useful income stream for TfL. “However the real challenge is not merely catching people who have driven through the tunnel in a vehicle that is too wide or too heavy, but instead ensuring greater compliance with the safety restrictions.

“TfL needs to ensure that there is a full review of the signage and information given to drivers on all approach roads to the Rotherhithe Tunnel. The message that only certain vehicles can go through the Tunnel needs to be made crystal clear to motorists many miles before they reach the tunnel.”

There are seven sets of signs warning drivers about the restrictions close to the Thames-crossing tunnel - at the Rotherhithe end, eastbound on Jamaica Road, northbound on Lower Road, westbound on Brunel Road and at the approach to the tunnel itself.

Carl Eddleston, TfL's head of asset operations, said: “The restrictions at the Rotherhithe Tunnel are absolutely vital to ensuring the safety of people travelling through it and we want everybody to be fully aware of these.

"We’d much rather people follow the rules than face fines, and the signs at the tunnel entrances clearly list the full set of restrictions in place, complying with Department for Transport rules governing road signs.

"We expect drivers to follow signage and be aware of the rules of the road at all times and will keep the issue under review to ensure that the tunnel remains safe for everyone.”

At the northern end in Limehouse there are signs both eastbound and westbound on Commercial Road and at

the approach to the tunnel itself.

The tunnel was built in 1908 and "was not designed to cope with modern levels of traffic," TfL says on its website.

Only vehicles less than two metres high and wide and weighing below two tonnes are allowed to drive through the tunnel. Since December 2019 drivers are not limited to one fine per day for breaking this rule. TfL says drivers whose vehicles don't meet these standards should cross the river at Tower Bridge or the Blackwall Tunnel.

The news comes after a senior TfL executive said that the Rotherhithe Tunnel might need to close if it didn't get a £120 million renovation.

Gareth Powell, managing director for surface transport at TfL, told the London Assembly’s transport committee in July that the tunnel is the river crossing most in need of repair, followed by Vauxhall Bridge.

He added that TfL has “a very advanced plan being developed” to make the changes, but that the transport agency needs long-term government guarantees over funding to carry out the project – whose cost he estimated at £120m.

A spokesperson for TfL said this week that there is no fixed date before which the tunnel would otherwise have to close, although the tunnel still needs urgent repairs to keep it open and safe in the long term.

Putting off the works means it would cost more to maintain and run the tunnel and the likelihood of closures will also increase year-on-year, as the operating systems become less reliable and more difficult to repair.

TfL's next government funding agreement will be settled in December.

Sticky situation: Protesters glue themselves to bridge Insulate Britain say they know the public are annoyed

Some 61 protesters blocked three locations in London - Bishopsgate and Limehouse Causeway and Upper Thames Street on the north side of Southwark Bridge. This is the fourteenth time that Insulate Britain has blocked motorways and A roads over the past six weeks, including the M25.

Police asked motorists to stay away from the Southwark Bridge area in the wake of the protests to avoid worsening traffic disruption.

Insulate Britain wants the government to insulate every home in the country by 2030, so less energy is used on heating and fewer people are stuck in “fuel poverty” - meaning they struggle to heat their homes. Charity National Energy Action said earlier this month that rising heating bills driven by higher gas prices could make up to 1.5m households fall into fuel poverty.

Spokesperson Liam Norton said: “We know that the public is frustrated and annoyed at the disruption we have caused. They should know that one way or another this country will have to stop

emitting carbon. We can do that now in an orderly, planned way, insulating homes and preventing thousands of deaths from fuel poverty or we can wait until millions have lost their homes and are fighting for water or starving to death.”

Transport for London (TfL) has obtained legal injunctions to stop protesters blocking fourteen roads in the capital, including the approaches to both Tower Bridge and London Bridge on both sides, as well as every entry and exit road to the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

Southwark Bridge is not included.

Breaking these injunctions means protesters can be punished for being in contempt of court, which has a maximum punishment of a two-year jail sentence.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said on Monday evening that he had told National Highways, which manages the UK’s roads “to apply for an injunction covering the entire strategic road network”.

“Tonight this has been granted on a temp basis by the High Court,” he said in a social media post.

“The long term solution lies in changes to the Police, Crime, Sentencing & Courts Bill, giving additional powers against disruptive protests which target critical national infrastructure. This includes unlimited fines & prison sentences of up to 6 months for obstructing highways.”

It comes after Shapps said on Friday that the government was taking a first group of Insulate Britain activists to court for their “dangerous and self-defeating action” on the M25, and that they could face prison time.

It does not appear that these legal challenges have had much of an effect on Insulate Britain’s efforts in the short term.

areas of Southwark have no TfL bikes, including Peckham, Camberwell and south Bermondsey. TfL has said that it is keen to promote cycling to get people healthier and reduce traffic. This has been successful: this September was the busiest ever for bike hires across London, with an average of more than 40,600, up from 37,900 last year.

Southwark Council said last year that its bike expansion plan “will support the council’s commitment to meet the needs of Southwark’s diverse community”.

The bike programme in neighbouring Lambeth goes much further south, down to Brixton and Stockwell. North of the river, docking stations go as far west as Hammersmith and Fulham and as far east

as Tower Hamlets.

Docking stations are expensive. TfL said in 2015 that an average-sized row of 27 bikes costs £197,000, although the agency added that this could vary. The docking stations are often paid for by developers as part of settlements with local authorities when they build new housing.

TfL also said in the commissioner’s report that 30 per cent of the Evelyn Street section of Cycleway 4 in Deptford has been finished and is set to complete in spring 2022. Drivers have complained of traffic problems caused by road closures as a result of building works along the stretch on Lower Road and Evelyn Street.

The number and location of the new docking stations is currently unclear.

The most recent expansion was in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe last year, near the stretch of Cycleway 4 along Jamaica Road and Lower Road.

Southwark Council also said in a report last year that it plans to put in more docking stations in Camberwell, Peckham, Nunhead and along the Old Kent Road by 2023 and has more than £1m in developer

money to fund the expansion.

TfL said in its monthly commissioner’s report for October: “Preliminary survey work has now started that will enable the introduction of a small expansion of new docking stations in Southwark.

“This is fully funded by the borough and the plan is to make these stations operational by 2022/23.”

Southwark’s TfL hire bikes are now mostly concentrated in the north-west of the borough, closer to central London.

Last year’s expansion saw Southwark get its furthest east set of bikes, near Canada Water Tube station. The docking stations furthest south in the borough are close to the Elephant and Castle roundabout.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk More than half of drivers in and around London don't know about the expanded ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) that came into force on Monday, a new study claims.

The ULEZ expanded to the South and North Circular roads in a bid to cut air pollution by fining people whose vehicles don't meet low emission standards.

For Southwark that means a huge growth, from a small area around London Bridge and Bankside to most of the rest of the borough, except parts of Dulwich, Crystal Palace and Sydenham that lie beyond the South Circular.

But despite the £12.50 daily fine for not complying, just 43 per cent of the drivers know about the changes, according to a new study by car sales website Motorway.

And 35 per cent of drivers know how to check if their car is compliant with the rules. Meanwhile only 33 per cent of drivers knew which south-east London boroughs would be included in the expanded ULEZ.

Motorway's chief executive Tom Leathes said ahead of the ULEZ expansion: "Despite having over three years to prepare for the ULEZ expansion, more than half of drivers in and around London are clearly still in the dark about this news and will get a nasty surprise when they cross the north or south circular on Monday."

Transport for London (TfL), which manages the ULEZ, said it has done plenty of work to make sure people are aware of the bigger zone, including sending a million letters, distributing 600,000 leaflets, sending four million emails and paying for lots of adverts.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: "London's toxic air is a health crisis causing long-lasting harm to our children and contributing to thousands of premature deaths.

'The Ultra Low Emission Zone has already cut nitrogen dioxide pollution by nearly half in central London and the expansion of the zone on 25 October means many more Londoners across the city will enjoy the benefits of cleaner, healthier air.

"We need bold action to clean up London's air and whilst it's encouraging that four out of five vehicles now meet the current standards and won't have to pay the ULEZ charge, I advise all drivers to use the TfL checker to make sure your vehicle is ULEZ compliant."

The ULEZ runs 24 hours a day, all year round other than Christmas Day. TfL think that 100,000 cars, 35,000 vans and 3,000 lorries could fall foul of the expanded zone every day.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk would-be thieves worked together to box in a Bermondsey woman in her 80s and reach into her shopping trolley - before she chased them away, in a shocking moment caught on CCTV.

Maureen Hodges, 86, was shopping in Bell and Sons butcher's in the Blue market earlier this month (October 15) for saveloys and marrow bones for her grandson's dog when two people who appear to be women subtly began following her across the shop.

One went very close in front of her and the other came in from behind. Footage shows the woman standing behind covering her hand with her bag and reaching into Maureen's trolley.

Luckily Maureen soon caught on to what was happening, turned round and confronted the woman in no uncertain terms.

"If the language had been coming out on that film I think I would have been arrested by the police," she joked. "It was atrocious language. But it's so clever the

way they do it. The two of them having a go. I hadn't even noticed it when I turned round."

The woman who was caught reaching into Maureen's trolley walked off out of the shop while the other stayed and finished her purchase.

butcher's, said he was surprised to find out the woman spent about £10 in the shop on expensive cakes. He added that he didn't recognise them and they haven't been back since.

Maureen said that she didn't feel traumatised by the attempted robbery but that it has given her pause for thought. "It’s never happened to me, and I’m 86 years old. I never dreamed of it walking down the Blue.

"If it happened to me, it could happen to anyone. I suppose I'm more vulnerable than I thought though. But I’m a very strong person really. I’ve had phone call after phone call from people. One said ‘what if she had a knife?'

“I think I would have had a go anyway.

I’m still ready to have a fight. I'm not one of those people that gets traumatised easily."

Maureen said that her neighbour told her: "You go down there looking too smart, you look like you’ve got a few bob."

But she added that the incident was another reminder to her of how times have changed in the area she knows so well. "I’ve stood outside on the stalls in the Blue, no one ever touched a penny from the till and they were open," she said. "You can’t walk the streets now how you want to. You’re not safe now."

Footage shared with the News comes from Bell and Sons CCTV cameras, which captured the incident. Maureen, who has known Simon for decades, was full of praise for him and his staff.

"Give Si his due to have all them cameras up," she said. "He’s a lovely boy, he doesn’t deserve it." Simon wasn't in at the time of the attempted robbery and his son and daughter were on duty.

Maureen added that one of them ran out and tried to find the would-be thief but they had disappeared.

Maureen said she wanted to get the word out to raise awareness of this kind of robbery and stop other elderly people being victimised. She will be "more vigilant and alert".

But she said that she would "carry on the same", adding: "I’m not going to be dictated to about what I can and can’t do. I should be able to walk the streets I was born in as free as when I was younger.

"You know, the old people still get out with their dolly trollies, and you shouldn’t have to look out over your shoulder to see who’s going to mug you."

Simon said they had not called the police because nothing had gone missing.

"They chose the wrong person to pick on," he added. "Maureen's streetwise she's seen it all before."

“Losing Jason has ripped apart our family, devastated our lives and has left us heartbroken. Words will never be enough to convey how painful each day without our Jason is. Not only was Jason a twin, a brother, a son, an uncle, a cousin and a nephew, he was the one who kept the family strong and together. He was loved by so many and the impact of his death has left so many broken.

Twenty-six years of happiness – that’s all we had.

“Even though we will never get Jason back, he deserves justice for what happened to him that evening. We know a lot of people have not come forward and we need those people to do so. Please just do the right thing.

Jason went for a night out and never came back home. We never got to say goodbye.

Someone chose to senselessly take his life away in the most horrific way.

“If anyone has any information on what took place that evening or witnessed what happened please share this with the police.”

Detectives investigating Jason's death have said that no one will get in trouble for being at the unlicensed event - their only focus is bringing Jason's killer to justice.

Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “While we have made progress with our investigation we know there are a lot of people who were there that evening who have not yet come forward.

“We know that there may be some reluctance to speak to us because this was an unlicensed music event which took place during Covid. I have a very clear message for anyone worried about this – you will not get in any kind of trouble for attending this rave.

“You might think what you saw or heard that evening is not relevant to us. That is not the case. Any information you have, no matter how insignificant you believe it to be, could prove vital to our investigation.

“You only need to read the words from Jason’s family to see how distraught they are.

Think about how your information could help them get justice on behalf of their son and brother.”

Jason Nyarko’s sister begs for witnesses to come forward

Murder victim: Jason Nyarko

Jason Nyarko, 26, was killed at the unlicensed music event in Stockholm Road on June 26 at about 11.45pm this year. He died despite the best efforts of the paramedics who treated him at the scene. A teenager was charged with murder in June but the investigation is ongoing.

Officers have appealed for anyone to come forward who could help them - and Jason's sister Goldie joined these calls on behalf of their family.

"It has been extremely difficult to face what has now become our reality and to accept and come to terms with what happened to Jason," she said. "To be honest we don’t think we ever will.

Peckham film-maker wins new black scholarship

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk A Peckham-raised filmmaker has been awarded the first in a new scholarship programme to help black people enter the filmmaking industry.

Chinaza Onyechi, 25, has been awarded MetFilm School’s first Black Student of Talent scholarship, allowing her attend their school based at London’s Ealing Studios.

After freelancing as a videographer, photographer and graphic designer for four years, alongside working full time in advertising and events, this opportunity represents the break Chinaza needed for her career.

“I’m incredibly honoured, and so thankful,” she said.

Chinaza has worked on a number of projects over the last few years, including a documentary about mental health in universities and a film which explores the life of a boy trying to provide for his family.

“At the moment I really enjoy editing - it’s so satisfying seeing everything coming together,” she said.

“I would love to work on some of the films that I currently enjoy watching. I’d love to work on a Disney production, specifically Marvel, and I really admire

Christopher Nolan’s work.

“Working with Beyoncé would also be amazing.

"The biggest thing holding me back right now is access to the right network and training. I’ve been self-taught up to now, and there’s only so much you can learn through YouTube - plus the industry is very who-knows-who.

“Getting on this course has definitely been the answer to a prayer.”

Chinaza said the result of the scholarship was delayed because of the large number of applicants.

She has recently been filming visuals for an app based on experience within home-care in Britain called the Home, which used to be a theatre production that has turned into a digital app.

Chinaza also had fond words to say of her hometown of Peckham, saying: “I love that Peckham is very vibrant.

“Our culture as black people is celebrated here. You can see that in the markets, they’re selling food that your parents enjoyed when they were kids.

“It’s somewhere where I see myself reflected in the local community.”

Chinaza is currently working with production company Napier Films, but said she cannot reveal any further information at this stage.

Southwark Council’s own studies found that there were no cumulative negative impacts of the flats overlooking the area.

When announcing that they had successfully gained planning permission, developer Joseph Homes emphasised

their sustainability-conscious development goals, stating that the Parkhouse development will provide a 72 per cent carbon reduction and promising a "pioneering development" towards carbon neutrality.

The warehouse currently occupying 25-33 Parkhouse Street will also be replaced with a “green corridor” linking Parkhouse Street to Burgess Park.

It comes as cases rise more broadly across London and the UK. The capital had more than 25,600 cases from October 1421, giving a rate per 100,000 of about 285 - significantly above Southwark, Lambeth and Lewisham’s rates for the same period.

More than 36,500 people tested positive across the UK on Wednesday (October 25). Some 38 people died within 28 days of a positive test.

Health Secretary Sajid Javid warned last week that daily Covid-19 cases could hit 100,000.

He told a Downing Street press conference. “We must all remember that this virus will be with us for the long term, and that it remains a threat. A threat to our loved ones and a threat to the progress that we’ve made in getting our nation closer to normal life.”

Covid-19 deaths in Southwark since the start of the pandemic are also the lowest out of any south-east London borough, at 370, a rate of nearly 116 per 100,000.

Bexley has the highest rate, with 234 per 100,000.

But Southwark’s vaccine take-up is also among the lowest out of the south-east London area, Just 56.4 per cent of people over the age of twelve have had a second dose, compared to 71 per cent and 72.4 per cent in Bexley and Bromley. Some 58.7 per cent of people across London have had a second dose.

Booster jabs are available for people over 50, health and care workers, and people with serious health conditions, among others. Nearly 687,000 people in London have had their booster jab since they became available about a month ago.

Figures for Southwark were unavailable at the time of publication.

Southwark’s cumulative case rate is the second lowest out of the six south-eastern boroughs since the start of the pandemic.

Some 38,209 people have tested positive in the borough, giving a rate per 100,000 of 11,939. Lewisham is marginally lower, with 11,841.

Bexley is highest, with 13,711 cases per 100,000, with Lambeth just behind on 13,284. Greenwich has 12,313 while Bromley has 12,143.

Lowest COVID rate in SE London

Developer Joseph Homes received an unanimous vote from the Planning Committee a week last Tuesday, October 19, to go ahead with their plans to build 109 new homes next to Burgess Park, at 25-33 Parkhouse Street.

However, the planning application received 174 objections and only 30 comments in support online, and community association Friends of Burgess Park argue that the shadows caused by the height of the 11-storey development will have a negative impact on the ecology of nearby Burgess Park.

This is a complaint repeated in many of the objections to the development, which draw attention specifically to the impact on bats and birds.

A spokesperson for Friends of Burgess Park said: “Friends of Burgess Park has campaigned for years to minimise the impact of tall developments overshadowing the park. With at least four tall developments beside the park edge the character will be changed forever.

“Unfortunately national and local planning policy and planning decisions do not give much value to the impact to biodiversity, nature and green space when weighed against other factors, especially the need for housing."

The group have shared videos on their website demonstrating the impact of a tall building in 25-33 Parkhouse Street and how it will cover parts of the park in shadow.

A council spokesperson, meanwhile, said: “Any decision is made taking into account all concerns and objections.

“In this instance, given the importance of Burgess Park to biodiversity, the council also commissioned an independent ecology report which

A man was rushed to hospital after a car caught fire outside the old council area housing office in Rotherhithe in the early hours of Friday morning last week.

There were unconfirmed reports from local residents that the fire was caused by a road traffic accident. Police said the vehicle owner was found nearby with burns.

The incident took place at about 1.30am on October 22 at the roundabout on Rotherhithe New Road with Abbeyfield Road. Footage taken by people living across the street in the Silwood Estate shows the fire raging as emergency services arrive.

Art-Invest, who have submitted planning permission for the Canada Water Dockside development, and Decathlon are offering the health and wellbeing fund over the next five years.

Developers frequently make investments in the local community as part of the process of getting planning permission for new projects, which can often make them a lot of money.

Officers at the scene said no one in the building was hurt. The burnt out car was cordoned off by police on Friday morning.

Police found the car on fire on regular patrols at about 1.30 in the morning. A spokesperson said that there had been no arrests and enquiries continue.

Brigade said: "Firefighters were called to a car alight on Abbeyfield Road in Southwark this morning (Friday).

"One car was destroyed by the fire and there was some minor damage to the front of a nearby property.

"One man was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service crews. The Brigade’s 999 Control Officers took seven calls to the blaze.

"The Brigade was called 01:34 and the fire was under control by 02:15.

One fire engine from Dockhead Fire Station was at the scene."

Southwark Council submitted plans earlier this month for a thirteen new council homes on the site of the former area housing office. If approved, building work will start in April next year and finish in October 2023. The council's application describes the site as currently vacant.

Estate’s drug den lockdown

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police and Southwark Council officers have raided a drug den on the same Rotherhithe street for the second time in less than three months.

Residents on St Helena Road, which is part of the Silwood Estate, complained to police that drug users were keeping their stash in an empty void.

Police and council officers cleared the drug den on Friday. Police said

this will "hopefully" prevent more problems of this kind emerging.

But it comes less than three months after we reported on officers raiding another drug den on St Helena Road, after drug users allegedly took it over, and commandeered a large electrical cupboard.

Rotherhithe dedicated ward officer Paul Green, part of the local safer neighbourhood team, said in August: “We have now cleared the area and renewed the locks. I hope that there will be no more issues regarding users at this location.”

The 3.5-metre tall 'Little Amal' was at the Globe Theatre on Bankside at 1pm on Saturday, where she was greeted by enthusiastic crowds.

Southwark Council said in a statement on social media: "We're welcoming Amal this Saturday to a borough that is proud to support those fleeing persecution and conflict. Her journey is a reminder of the situation so many people face as

they try to survive and protect loved ones."

Mayor Sadiq Khan lent his support to the initiative, adding: "Amal is a 9-year-old unaccompanied child. A refugee. She represents the millions of displaced children forced to leave their homes in desperate situations."

Amal is nearing the end of an 8,000 km 'walk' from the Syrian border with Turkey to Manchester. The project was created by theatre groups Good Chance and Handspring Puppet Company, responsible for War Horse, which played in the National Theatre on the South Bank.

Guilty after police find drugs and shotgun

Officers patrolling the street on November 19 last year came across a black BMW acting suspiciously. They tried to stop the car but the driver sped away. When the car stopped, police arrested the driver, Rotherhithe man Kane Lamar, 24 at the time.

The two passengers, who police later

identified as Jack Purfield, 24, also from Rotherhithe and Enriquo Withers, 19, from Wandsworth, ran away and police chased them through a nearby estate.

Withers was caught in a front garden, where he was arrested. Two packages that the suspects had thrown away were found with ammunition and about £1,000 worth of crack and heroin.

Officers also found a black holdall with a sawn-off shotgun, more ammunition and pairs of latex and rubber gloves.

Purfield was arrested a few days later.

The three men were found guilty on October 25 this year of two counts of possession with intent to supply Class A drugs, possession of a shotgun without

licence and two counts of possession of ammunition without licence. They have been held in custody until sentencing on December 17.

Detective Constable Tim Tripp, from the Met’s violent crime taskforce, said: “We are always working to remove guns and other weapons from the streets of London and we are pleased that another deadly firearm has now been removed from circulation.

“Those who carry weapons should be in no doubt – we will use every tool at our disposal to protect our communities by prosecuting those intent on perpetrating serious violence.”

"I wouldn’t necessarily say it was a bad school, but for everyone from that school - our aspirations were really low. And I think to be fair the teachers did try to get us to think bigger than where you are.

"I played both sides and I was lucky to come out the right side. I was just

probably one of the lucky ones."

Tinyan went to university to become a journalist. He said: "I thought ‘when I become a journalist I’m going to write about all the bad things that happen in the hood'."

Tinyan didn't manage to break into journalism, instead becoming a youth worker with Lambeth Council and Croydon Council, as well as with the Safer London youth support group based in Southwark, where he worked with young kids.

"With the younger people you could get through quickly," he said. "They were almost in awe. They’ve got an image of someone who’s coming into help you looks like. The archetypal, primarily middle class, white kind of thing.

"The kids were like ‘I thought you’d be one of those people who just chats sh*t’," he laughed. "It was never really about being relatable, it’s more about the information I can give - but obviously it helps being relatable."

Tinyan then set up his own social enterprise, Chasing Prospects, not long before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. He runs the organisation on his own, with volunteers helping to run workshops.

He admitted that there is a "plethora" of similar organisations in Southwark and London more widely but said that groups are often not connected to the communities they are trying to help, and are stuck doing a "firefighting" operation rather than preventing kids getting seriously entrenched in a life of crime.

"If you haven’t been in trouble, or you’re not on the verge of committing a crime, you might not get these opportunities shared with you. They're often given to this really at-risk cohort, but we want to catch people earlier than that.

"Those opportunities aren’t necessarily shared with people who aren’t in trouble, who are still in education, who aren’t going out committing any sort of crime or doing

county lines - those kids in the middle who might go either way.

"I see myself as that Robin Hood, using that privilege I’ve got because I’ve got connections with Lambeth Council and Croydon Council, I'm on those mailing lists [where opportunities are shared].

"I can bring that information back to grassroots areas, use it for people who thought ‘Oh, I thought that was just for people on probation’ or ‘I thought that was just for people who were in prison’."

Chasing Prospect's workshop volunteers are often people with highflying jobs in the City. Asked whether it could be difficult for them to connect with the young people taking part, Tinyan said that the focus on success that they represent was inspiring.

"In youth work there can be a lot of focus on the tough circumstances people overcome. When you look at 'success stories' there's a lot of harping on about how much crime they committed, but not much about what they’ve done well since to get where they are.

"At the end of the day every person wants to be financially independent, that’s a lot of the reason young people go into crime.

"So you get kids asking 'you’re telling me don’t sell drugs, don’t get into gangs, but how do you get successful?’

So someone coming from the City can talk them through the practical, positive steps they need to follow to get where they want to in life.

"I think that's more useful rather than the negative thing of ‘I used to be a tough guy, I used to beat people up, so don’t be a tough guy - I’m lucky to be here, etc.’"

As well as his workshops, Tinyan works with local businesses in Bermondsey and across Southwark and London more widely to get young people work experience and internships in various sectors.

A ten-year-old Bermondsey girl raised more than £300 for terminally ill children by selling cakes in the Blue market last Saturday.

Head’s high praise for Stormzy

Famous rapper Stormzy offered life-changing advice to young students of a Camberwell school last week for Black History month and recieved high praise from the headteacher.

Sacred Heart Catholic School welcomed the Brit-award-winning artist on Monday, October 18, in a “surreal experience” for its students.

Stormzy, whose real name is Michael Ebenezer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., conducted four talks and Q and As, allowing every student in the school to hear him speak, before signing books and taking photos.

Ava from Year 12 said: “Stormzy coming to school during Black History Month was a fabulous experience.

Instead of learning about someone

from a book we actually got to meet someone in person.

“He shared his struggles about being black within the music industry, and dealing with people's preconceptions of how others viewed him compared to how he is. Expressing his ideology that we should always be "unapologetically ourselves" was inspirational.

“He spoke really well and really encouraged us all to follow our dreams and be dedicated in our studies.

While visiting Sacred Heart, Stormzy said: “Figure out what is going to make you happy. You want to enjoy your work. If you love Science, go down that route, if you love law, go down that route. What it takes

to be anything in life is hard work, discipline and diving into it.”

Big up on being in tune with God. Being in tune with God means something – it’s very important to me.”

If you’re someone who’s late to things you need to cut that out! I was often late for lessons at school and didn't realise the impact this could have in my career. Being late for a key meeting can have serious consequences for your career.”

He added: “Year 11 is where the real champions of society are made. When it’s time to work, make sure you’re working. This is your time to be the best student you can be. Sacrifice the next few months to get the best GCSE results you can.”

“Your friends can be a hindrance to who you want to be. Your best friend needs to be someone who understands that school is where you need to learn. You can’t afford to get bad GCSEs because you’ve got one stupid friend.”

Serge Cefai, headteacher at Sacred heart, said: “We were very lucky to have the connections to facilitate Michael AKA Stormzy visit our school.

“As a headteacher and teacher for 43 years there is no question that I was a little bit apprehensive about bringing a rapper into our school. I have little knowledge of music but I am fully aware of some of the less savoury vocabulary used in certain raps that our children love to listen to.

“However, Michael is a hugely impressive young man whose only aim in visiting our school was to try and encourage our children to do the right thing. By that I mean behave well, work hard and grow up to be able to contribute to society in a positive manner.

“My thanks to Michael for his time and I sincerely hope that other schools and pupils get a chance to listen to his truly inspirational words.”

Kasey is baked a wide variety of sweet treats, including cupcakes, brownies and chocolate chip cookies to support kids hospice Helen and Douglas House, her mother Kelly said.

in Drappers Way, were in the Blue from 11am on Saturday. Kasey loves baking and did all the mixing and preparation herself, Kelly said.

This isn't the first time Kasey has raised money for charity. She has also helped support bone cancer and breast cancer charities, after her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer.

New Walworth Library named after Una Marson Southwark Council has named the borough's latest public library after the trailblazing Una Marson, the BBC's first black female programme maker.

The new library will be in Walworth, on the north side of the Old Kent Road. It will open in spring next year. This news comes years after a Blue Plaque was unveiled for Una in Southwark, a scheme run by the News, Southwark Heritage Association and the council.

Una Marson, who was also a writer and feminist activist, moved to London from Jamaica in 1932, settling in Peckham. She moved back to Jamaica after four years before returning to London in 1938. She left again after the Second World War. She became friends with Dr Harold Moody, the founder of the League of Coloured Peoples, and wrote extensively in poetry, fiction and

non-fiction.

In 1942 she was hired by the BBC to work on Calling the West Indies, which encouraged Caribbean soldiers in the British army to send in messages to their families, which were read out on the radio. She was promoted to producer in 1942.

Cllr Alice Macdonald, Cabinet Member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure, said: “Una Marson is a wonderful example to the people of Southwark and beyond. She overcame the challenges of arriving in a new country, and those presented by both her race and gender, in a time that was even more challenging than today.

“We hope that our Una Marson Library will inspire people to learn, grow, seek help and embark on new adventures, as well.”

rapper brings home the bacon South London rapper Krept, one half of duo Krept and Konan, visited Rotherhithe school Bacon's College as part of black history month celebrations.

Gipsy Hill-born Krept, whose real name is Casyo Johnson, took part in a question-and-answer session before listening to students' own songs.

Krept was just one of several successful black people who visited the school to share their stories and experiences with students in October.

Celebrations ended with an 'evening of excellence' on Thursday (October 21), including dance, drama, music, gospel, drumming, samba, art and a fashion show with hand-made clothes.

Shenika, in Year 8, said: “I’ve really enjoyed all the things we have been doing in school this month, it’s been really exciting, the fashion show, making an African dress, rehearsing poems. As a black person, black history month is a topic that’s close to me, and it’s important for me to be able to express it as my own.”

Head girl Tiger Lily Chin, in Year 13, said: “The talk yesterday [from consultant anaesthetist Dr Desire Onwochei] was very empowering.

To hear from a woman who is very successful and comes from a humble beginning has really inspired me.”

Joshua in, Year 8, added: “I have learned so much about black history during this month and this helps me to understand how our lives have changed during our time in Britain.

I also performed as part of the samba band and as one of the DJs for

the fashion show in the Evening of Excellence. It was incredible.”

Bacon's College staff said they wanted to make this year's black history month celebrations the biggest ever.

The school's chaplain, Reverend Nicky Teverson, said: “Bacon’s College is a Christian school and as one body we celebrate black history month, working together to unite in humanity and deepen our understanding of

ourselves and community.

"Throughout October we have been focusing on the diverse, rich and at times challenging aspects of black history: Through assemblies discussing identity and belonging to historical facts focusing on the journey and arrival of Caribbean and African people to UK. Black history has influenced who we are today – it is part of us."

“Whichever role they worked in the Service, be that on the frontline, in

our call centres, in our workshops, or partner and support services, they all absolutely had a key role to providing outstanding patient care.”

There was a one-minute silence before Dr Martin added: "Thank you for joining us today. I hope that today’s event gives you some comfort.

"We will always remember your loved ones and our dear colleagues, and will never forget their commitment and dedication to the Service during the most unprecedented challenge that the NHS has ever faced.”

A message in the memorial garden reads: “There are special people in our lives who never leave us, even after they are gone.”

A tribute to ambulance workers

Family members of London ambulance workers who died in the past year gathered at the service's Waterloo headquarters this week to commemorate their loss.

About 100 relatives of the 22 ambulance workers who have died since 2020 were given a rose to lay in the London Ambulance Service (LAS) memorial garden, which has been open since May, in memory of their loved ones.

Former colleagues of their loved ones also gave family members memorial books, including messages from co-workers, as well as ceremonial bells.

Our nurses Mercedes and Julia go above and beyond Two Guy's and St Thomas' trust nurses who go "above and beyond" in their work have been given awards as part of the Royal College of Nursing's (RCN) black history month celebrations.

Mercedes Miguel, a community stroke clinical nurse specialist, and Julia Gangata, a cath lab sister at Harefield Hospital in west London, were named 'rising stars' by nursing chiefs. Harefield Hospital is managed by the Guy's and St Thomas's trust.

The awards celebrate nurses who "bring about meaningful improvements" for black and ethnic minority patients and act as role models in creating a more inclusive environment.

Mercedes, from south London, supports patients and families as they adapt their home life following a stroke. She worked with the community clinical psychologist and created support groups for staff, to provide education and guidance as

well as to help understand the views of black, Asian and minority ethnic patients. These have continued as monthly support groups.

Mercedes said: “I am humbled to have received the RCN London Rising Star Award. I am very grateful to be working with the community stroke team as we offer and advocate equitable access for all individuals and their families in the community.

“Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, our team has worked together and re-organised priorities to ensure patient safety. Each individual on the team has been flexible and adaptable in these circumstances and we continue to look after each other as a family.”

Avey Bhatia, chief nurse for Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “I am so proud of Mercedes and Julia for going above and beyond to care for their patients and colleagues during the Covid-19 pandemic. They are wonderful role models who embody our trust values.”

Comment ‘I don’t want to retreat behind bullet proof glass’

W

hen longstanding Southend MP Sir David Amess was murdered at his advice surgery it was a tragedy for his wife and family. But it was also an attack on our democracy.

The only reason he was attacked was because he was an elected member of the House of Commons and he was killed when he was doing his job.

The shock for us was compounded by the fact that this was the second MP to be murdered in their constituency in the last five years. In 2016 Jo Cox, the new MP for Batley and Spen in Yorkshire was shot.

It is a distinct and important feature of our democracy that MPs do not swish about in armoured cars.

We walk about our constituency, we take public transport.

MPs who come on visits from other countries are astonished about how accessible we are. But it’s part of our pact with our voters, that they will vote for us but when we go up to Parliament we will stay in contact with them. This is important not just for local people, who need to

MP for Camberwell & Peckham know that we are listening to them and understand their concerns.

But it’s important to us MPs too, to hear first hand what’s going on and see for ourselves. Just last week I went to a pensioners meeting in Camberwell and met with tenants representatives in Walworth. As always, I was visible publicly and had no security. I want to be able to continue to do that and don’t want to retreat behind bullet proof glass.

But we can’t just say that we’ll carry on as if nothing has happened.

It cannot be an occupational hazard for an MP that you might get killed.

We cannot say that two murdered MPs is just a price worth paying for our democracy. We need to ensure that MPs are as safe as we can possibly be. After Jo Cox’s murder MPs were given more security in our homes. And protection in and around the House of Commons was massively upgraded. But the problem of how we go about our work mingling with our constituents in a safe way has not been solved.

Focus now on your early autumn performers

eptember was calm, sunny and warm with cool overnight temperatures; classic text book weather for early autumn. Then on cue towards the month-end blustery winds arrived bringing heavy rain to the start of October.

Summer perennials have finished their work for this year and the focus moves to star early autumn performers - Japanese anemone and Sedum spectabile. (Sedum’s name changed to ‘Hylotelephium’ but is still known as Sedum or ‘Ice plant’).

The Japanese anemone appears in late summer, producing tall stems with simple, pale pink flowers and a circle of gold stamens in the centre.

There is also a taller variety that has pure-white flowers; both are easy to grow and tolerate shade. The Ice plant has fleshy silver-green leaves on long stems topped by flat speckled pink flower-heads – made up of tiny little star shaped blooms which attract bees and butterflies. As the flowers

age they turn a rich, dark pink. There is also a white flowered Ice Plant - appropriately named ‘Iceberg’.

Hedychium 'Tara' or the Ginger lily is one of the more unusual and exotic herbaceous perennials - with its striking 2m long stems and lance-shaped leaves. It produces fragrant orange flowers from late summer through October. There are many different varieties available any would make a stunning centre piece in the border - or in a large container on the balcony / patio.

The Ginger lily is relatively easy to grow and is usually planted in May; some varieties will need protection in very cold winters (a heavy mulch or horticultural fleece).

There are many small trees and shrubs providing interest – Rosa rugosa has lovely deep red rosehips. The traditional hedgerow tree/shrub Hawthorn has little bundles of maroon-red berries. More common in a town garden is Pyracantha – now laden

surgeries, it’s community meetings and walkabouts. The question of how we ensure we can continue to do all this safely cannot be left to the police, or to Government, though they need to play their part. It’s a matter for Parliament itself. That’s why I’ve proposed that we have a Speaker’s Conference. This is a rarely used mechanism which allows the Speaker to bring the political parties together and include the Government and agencies to consider and then make proposals for change. This is a serious issue which needs detailed consideration and sensible action.

We must neither have a kneejerk overreaction or just carry on with business as usual. Last time I proposed a Speaker’s Conference after Jo Cox’s murder it was blocked by the Government. I hope this time they agree. Ultimately it’s for each and every one of us as MPs to decide how we do our work. But it would really assist if we could have a well-considered set of proposals from a Speaker’s Conference which we could all put into effect.

After general weeding start to lightly fork over compacted areas loosening soil. This also helps to expose larvae hidden in the ground and gives birds access to a food source - helping to control the insect larvae of moths, vine weevils plus slug and snail eggs.

As we reach mid-autumn there is little sign of the leaves changing into their seasonal displays. However, temperatures are gradually falling and day light hours continue to shorten - this will bring colour change and leaf drop. Then the work of clearing and chasing down swirling piles of leaves begins. British Summer Time ends on 31st October and the clocks go back one hour.

Next month it will be time to plan tree and shrub planting; and it is the last chance to plant Tulip bulbs.

We need to make London more breathable

B

old action is needed to clean up London’s air, according to mayor Sadiq Khan.

But is the ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ), which expanded to eighteen times its previous size this week, the right option?

Research released on the eve of the zone’s expansion to the North and South Circulars on Monday, October 25, suggested fewer than half of London drivers knew it was happening - and were potentially letting themselves in for punitive daily fees for using older, more polluting cars.

TfL said they made huge efforts to tell people about the new zone.

Does the expansion mean a further burden on ordinary working people, many of whom have already been hit hard by the pandemic and are worried about a tough winter ahead? The answer is probably yes.

But Khan is also right - we do have to clean up London’s toxic air to avoid more tragic deaths like Ella Adoo-Kissi-Debrah, the young girl in Lewisham for whom air pollution was listed as a cause of death. ULEZ may hit hard now - but we have a responsibility to make London more breathable.

What future for Rotherhithe Tunnel?

A

s we reported exclusively this week, TfL collected at least £5 million in fines at Rotherhithe Tunnel over the first eight months of the year. That means people drove vehicles that were heavy or too large through the tunnel more than 76,000 times.

Caroline Pidgeon, the chair of London Assembly’s transport committee, says it’s a question of signage. But there are six signs at the northern and southern approaches to the tunnel. Are people just taking the hit to avoid having to drive to Tower Bridge or another river crossing?

Maybe the fines should get even bigger to put people off. After all this is a tunnel that is over 100 years old and in desperate need of repairs. TfL said in July that it needs £120 million for a full repair job, otherwise it will keep having to patch up the tunnel and eventually may need to close it down altogether.

But even if all that £5 million was spent on repairing the tunnel - and it almost certainly isn’t we would need to wait about sixteen years to raise enough money. Either the fines get bigger, the government steps in, or eventually we may lose the tunnel.

TfL’s next funding settlement with the Department for Transport comes in December - we will have to wait to see what happens then.

This little forgotten patch in the everychanging environment of the Elephant feels tucked away on the corner of St George’s Road and Oswin Street.

An offshore developer is hoping to demolish the current building and replace it with a fifteen-storey ‘boutique hotel.’

Campaigners have already been hitting back with protests to try to prevent planning permission being granted and meanwhile theatre company BOLD are making the space its home for the time being. Plans for such a large development could take years and while the planning process wrangles on local theatre-maker Sarah Davey-Hull is making sure the current building is anything but idle.

Throughout the lockdown she has transformed the space as a hub for actors, writers and theatre creatives of all kinds.

Now with the audiences returning to mainstream theatre this 55-year-old, whose family come from around the corner in Waterloo and Kennington, while she now lives in Forest Hill is putting on BOLD Elephant’s first show - an immersive promenade theatre experience about the power of stories.

I for one, love theatre and revel in all its forms, but I do admit to feeling that immersive promenade theatre often fills me with a sense in trepidation. A must see in the ever-changing face of Elephant & Castle performance as either a huge success with a standing ovation, or dare I say it, an utter failure with a walkout (although I doubt I’d have the bad manners to do that until the interval at least). But that trepidation is well worth it, when immersive promenade theatre is good. It allows you to free your mind; you will not find yourself fidgeting in the stalls, placed them as individuals.”

The studio opened on Monday (October 25) with a series of holiday workshops in the half-term break.

These workshops are a combination of 2-hour art courses, exploring projects across mediums including paper sculpture, clay, mixed media, watercolour and acrylics.

Each project is individual and at the end of each session children has gone home with a finished piece of artwork.

The studio will then open for general classes next week on Tuesday November 2, through to Friday December 17. art-K began in 2000, when Kathryn Harper combined her creative inclination and her experience in paediatric speech and language therapy to develop an art programme for children.

In 2016, her daughter, now Managing Director Emily Harper, saw the opportunity to build an art tuition company that would represent the future of art education nationally.

Together Emily and Kathryn, operating as Creative Director, have grown art-K to more than 30 clubs, teaching more than 3,000 students per week and employing over 100 artists.

This type of theatre allows you to be more receptive. But, the theatre marker might use all sorts of tricks to keep you engaged and some might even frighten you into it, where you feel more like you have entered a horror ride at Margate.

BOLD’s ‘What They Forgot To Tell Us (and other stories)’, was so well paced

that from the outset you are set at ease.

You are taken through by the company’s members, acting as the staff of a failed talent agency, which is due to close down for good.

Set across three floors of what was clearly a rather insipid office building, corners and whole rooms have been transformed into playful spaces where

each member tells you a story that you did not expect to hear.

Even being separated at times into groups, of as little as four people, the experience is anything but intimidating, it is the exact opposite.

The short break-off individual performances are just five minutes long each and if you do go with a friend or group I would encourage you to sit apart as the agency staff picks you out to join them at each one of their performances. Each group misses one of the performances, this is a great idea and it gave me and my pals more to discuss after the show.

The show ends with the absurd, but by which time, because you have been slowly moving around the space and taking in all the little nuances that have been created, you have processed better the meaning of what is going on. You have found your feet so to speak, and so the comic elements that are brilliantly timed, are perhaps even more heightened.

This is a devised play that was written, rehearsed and staged in just three weeks.

The actors, costume and set designer, and directors clearly come from a group with a wealth of experience in this type of show. And so, saw no need to shove their audience along into with elaborate settings, stunts and capers, they simply told a story – well more than one.

the tragic walworth fire 110 years ago October 25, 2021 marks the 110th anniversary of a terrible fire in Walworth, which eventually took the lives of five people, writes Neil Crossfield...

The following account of the events is based on contemporary newspaper reports, as the story became national news, as were the subsequent inquests into the incident held at Newington Vestry.

Frederick William Nichols lived at 23 Blackwood Street, just off East Street, where he was running a newsagent’s, selling newspapers, stationery and tobacco. Living with him in the rooms above the shop were his 28-yearold wife, Annie Rebecca Nichols, his two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Louise and his son Frederick, who was celebrating his first birthday on the day of the fire.

At the time the fire broke out, Nichols' fifteen-year-old sister Edith had also been in the shop, but fortuitously their servant girl Phyllis Clark had been out for the evening.

In the days preceding Bonfire Night, Nichols had bought a job lot of ‘Bengal Matches’ at a reduced price, as they were slightly damp. Similar to a flare or sparkler, these matches would burn in different colours when lit and were popular with children. Earlier inquests had examined cases of children dying after being set alight with these products. However, government officials decreed that they did not come under the explosives act like other pyrotechnics and could be bought by anyone.

Nichols told the inquest that when he had returned from work that evening his wife had asked him to carry the ‘coloured lights’ he had bought into the shop. They had arrived that morning and had been stored in the passageway. As he brought them through, he saw his sister strike one of these matches, which caused the rest of the box to explode. No doubt panicked, she dropped the burning box into the pile of ‘Bengal Matches’ her sister-inlaw had laid out on the table. Nichols then recalled that these exploded and rapidly spread the fire. Other witnesses reported that Mrs Nichols may have been trying to dry the ‘Bengal Matches’ out in front of the parlour fireplace.

At around 8.05pm, James Graham, living opposite at 20 Blackwood Street, heard his daughter screaming.

Rushing across the road, he saw the shop was well alight. Trying to enter, he saw Nichols desperately struggling to get into the burning building, saying ‘they’re in there Jim!’ His clothing was alight, ‘a human torch’ according to Graham, yet he used his bare hands to extinguish the flames, suffering severe burns in doing so. Although Nichols had been injured, he continued to try in vain to reach his family and had to be restrained. The abundance of combustible items in the shop, along with the addition of the ‘Bengal Matches’ meant that the intensity of the fire was great. The radiated heat from the fire was reported to have started to damage buildings on the opposite side of the street.

Heroically, besides James Graham, several other people tried to get into

One newspaper reported another neighbour, dustman George Knight, trying to scale the drainpipe to reach the children upstairs, but the window frame had come away as he grabbed it and he had fallen to the floor.

Another 18-year-old, Leonard Percy Coverdale, of 53 Portland Street, tried valiantly to save the children sleeping upstairs. Coverdale worked in the shop and so would have known the family well. He was at first beaten back by the flames but tried again, covering his head with a sack. Yet again he was unsuccessful and terribly burnt. Sadly, just six years later, this brave young man was killed in action serving with the Devonshire Regiment on May 7, 1917.

The alarm had been raised and the fire brigade received a call at 8.10pm.

Fire appliances sent from Old Kent Road Fire Station arrived within ten minutes and soon put out the fire.

Unfortunately, it had developed so quickly that it was too late to save any of the occupants. When firemen later discovered the bodies, Annie, Nichol’s wife, was found still sitting in a chair in the parlour, having made no attempt to escape. Edith's body was found badly burnt on the floor nearby.

The ferocity of the flames had caused extensive damage to her lower torso.

Annie Louise and Frederick were found upstairs, overcome by the noxious smoke.

At the initial inquest, Francis Bulpill, a London Fire Brigade station officer, said that he had never seen such a fierce fire in such a small place in the whole of his career. He also mentioned that the crowds who had gathered to watch the fire also attempted to help the firemen when they got to work but this had hampered their efforts.

Frederick William Nichols, James Graham and Leonard Coverdale were all taken to hospital suffering serious burns. Frederick lay unconscious in Clayton ward at St Thomas’s hospital for several days until he was finally told of the fate of his family on Sunday, October 29.

The funerals of the victims took place on November 2, 1911. Though there were four people being buried that day, there were only two coffins. One contained the remains of Edith Nichols, the other contained the bodies of Annie Nichols and her two young children.

This tragic incident had shocked and saddened the local community, evident in the fact that one whole carriage was needed to carry over two hundred wreaths which had been sent.

While some of these were from dignitaries like the local MP, James Arthur Dawes, others were from local

schools, pubs and church groups. One particularly poignant tribute was from the men of Old Kent Road fire station who had attended the fire.

Shops in East Street displayed black shutters of mourning and thousands of people gathered to watch the sad procession, which had set off from Bronte Place, weaving its sombre way past the scene of the fire, past the Wellington College Mission in South Street (now Dawes Street) and finishing at St John's church in Larcom Street.

Policemen from L Division were deployed to keep the crowds back, though it was reported that when the carriages moved past, the crowd was ‘still and silent’ and ‘there was not one boy or man who did not bare his head’.

Though the family were parishioners of St Peter's church, St John’s was chosen to hold the service, as this was where Frederick and Annie had been married in 1908. The funeral was conducted by the Reverend John Horsley from St Peters and Reverend J.C. Morris, Vicar at St John's, with over 850 people packed into the church.

After a moving service, the funeral procession continued to Nunhead cemetery. Many more thousands of people lined the streets as it moved through Camberwell and Peckham, with an estimated crowd of 3,000 gathering at Nunhead.

Three separate funds had been set up to raise money for Nichols and the other men who had been injured in the fire. Contributions had come in from individuals and local businesses. The collection organised by the Southwark Mayor included contributions of £14 and 7 shillings from the Ring Boxing venue in Blackfriars, £1 and 1 shilling from the Penrose Cycle Company and 2 shillings 6 pence from ‘The Old Bun House’. A benefit concert was held at Manor Place Baths on November 16.

Supported by local music halls like the Surrey Theatre, South London Palace and Camberwell Palace, up to 50 artistes put on a show lasting over three hours.

Unsurprisingly, the inquest returned a verdict of accidental death on the Nichols family. This verdict had been reached when the inquest had resumed in January 1912, as an earlier inquest had been adjourned to allow

the recovery of those injured at the fire and also to allow the attendance of a government explosives expert. It was also decided that the London Fire Brigade had done all it could. However, representations were made that a new fire station be built at Camberwell Gate. This plan did not materialise, but it was proposed that a new electrically driven motor escape van be kept at Old Kent Road Fire Station.

These early electric vehicles had a range of about 60 miles at 25 mph. The London Fire Brigade operated around 15 of these by 1915 but difficulties charging the two-ton batteries meant that they never caught on.

James Graham, who had suffered extensive burns to his hands during his rescue attempt, had returned to work with Southwark Council. Though he had not been on the permanent staff, councillors had unanimously voted to get him a full-time job, so that he would receive full sickness benefits while he recovered. His inability to work had caused major financial hardship for his wife and seven children.

Three weeks after the fire he had suffered a stroke and was admitted into hospital. He had become paralysed and lost the ability to talk. Doctors attributed this to his exertions at the fire. He died in Champion Hill hospital on March 20 1912. Recommendations were made that he should be put forward for a Carnegie Hero Fund award, but it is not known if he received this.

That Graham had shown courage is not in question, but he appeared to be a humble man as well. Speaking at an event in Browning Hall, MP for Walworth James Dawes said he had received a letter from Graham saying: "I did not do much. I wish I could have done more." When he had died another benefit night was held for him, in May 1912, at Cambridge Hall in Addington Square. Somewhat bizarrely to modern eyes, as part of this performance, the widow of Mr Graham and her seven children were paraded on stage dressed in their black mourning clothes.

This sad tale had a happier ending, as just over three years later, on November 3 1914, Frederick Nichols remarried at St Peter's church to 23-year-old Alice Lillian Chandler, a domestic servant.

On the same document, Nichols is still listed as living at 23 Blackwood Street, the scene of the fire. How his new wife felt about moving into this house with all its tragic memories is not known.

Nichols is shown as the proprietor of a newsagent’s shop in trade directories up until his death in 1957. When he died at the Royal Waterloo Hospital at the age of 71, probate records show that his widow Alice was left the sum of £3680, 8 shillings, and 2 pence, a considerable legacy in the 1950s equating to around £90,000 in today’s money. The houses in Blackwood Street were cleared long ago and the site of this tragic incident is now occupied by a barrow store used by market traders.

Though no physical trace remains, should you ever be buying flowers from the stall on the corner of Blackwood Street and East Street please feel free to pause and spare a thought for the five victims of this fire.

Gavin Rose’s side just outside play-offs after four points from two games

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET are just outside the play-off places after their 0-0 National League South draw against Maidstone United at Champion Hill on Tuesday evening.

After their 2-1 win at Braintree Town the previous Saturday, Gavin Rose’s side returned home but couldn’t make the breakthrough in front of 2,131 fans in east Dulwich.

It was a game of few chances against an experienced United side who could call on the services of former Millwall

striker Alfie Pavey and ex-Arsenal defender Gavin Hoyte.

Last Saturday, the Hamlet dished out a fifth successive league defeat to Braintree Town at Cressing Road.

Dulwich went 2-0 up and missed a penalty before Tom Derry pulled a goal back.

The visitors went in front in the tenth minute when Jordan Green sprinted beyond the covering defence from Giovanni McGregor’s pass to beat goalkeeper Billy Johnson and finish into an empty net.

They doubled that advantage in the 32nd minute through Quade Taylor following a corner from McGregor.

Derry halved the deficit in the 71st minute but Braintree couldn’t avoid a seventh defeat in a row in all competitions.

The Hamlet are eighth in the table, a point behind Hampton & Richmond Borough and two points behind Dorking Wanderers and Oxford City with a game in hand on all three.

Rose’s side host Borough at Champion Hill this Saturday. Kick-off is at 3pm.

Meanwhile, Rose bolstered his squad with the signing of forward Ricky German on loan from Crawley Town.

The 22-year-old Grenadian international joins from the League

found opposite wing-back Sam Smith who hit a first-time volley leaving the goalkeeper no chance.

Stansfeld stunned their opponents when they made it 2-0 in the third minute as man of the match Macey Malyon cut in from the left before hitting a curling right-foot shot into the top corner, the Staplehurst stopper unable to do anything only watch the ball fly in.

The Stans looked dangerous every time they went forward with the visitors not really causing the home

side too many problems.

Stansfeld’s dominance was rewarded again in the last minute of the half when a Dan Parkinson free-kick was nodded home by Smith and the tie was effectively over.

The second half predictably lulled and was played out with very few chances for either side.

But fifteen minutes from time, Staplehurst got a sliver of hope when midfielder Dominic Bristow gave Stans goalkeeper Charlie Cottrell no chance as he drove his shot into the top corner.

Two side on a deal until January.

German started his career at Chesterfield and spent time on loan at Alfreton Town, Sheffield FC and Matlock Town, before moving to Southern League Premier South side Hendon.

During the 2018-19 season, German scored 21 games in 28 games for the north London side.

He joined Crawley on a free transfer in January 2019 and made his debut against Port Vale, coming on for former Dulwich attacker Panutche Camará.

German also had a loan spell at Hemel Hempstead from July 2019 to January 2020.

German was recently called up to the Grenada national team, and featured in the 2021 Gold Cup alongside new Dulwich teammate Tyrone Sterling.

Meanwhile, Ronnie Vint has rejoined Dulwich on loan from Dartford.

The centre-back was previously on loan at Champion Hill during the 202021 season and impressed with some commanding displays.

There have been two outgoing loan switches. Deon Moore has signed for Isthmian League Premier Division Lewes on an initial one-month deal and Jamie Splatt has joined VCD Athletic of the Isthmian League South East Division.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER MISSED out on a tie with rivals Stansfeld after losing 2-1 to Badshot Lea in the first round of the FA Vase last weekend.

The Combined Counties Premier Division South side took the lead at St Paul’s through Tane Caubo who pounced on the loose ball after Fisher goalkeeper Dan Carpanini had made a save.

Michael Sarpong, who had been on the wrong end of a bad challenge before continuing after treatment, levelled for the hosts with a brilliant strike from outside the box in front of an attendance of 162 in Rotherhithe.

But the home fans were quietened again when Caubo scored his second in the 61st minute.

Christian Udo had a late chance to equalise but Badshot goalkeeper Kallum Lunn saved as his side went through to the second round.

The Lionesses were in control for most of the game and could have added to their winning margin but for some missed chances late on.

Jack Wheeler’s side took the lead in the eighth minute when Ellie Hinckley was sent through before she rounded the goalkeeper to finish.

Sophie Chapman, on her full debut, then found Chloe Burr but she fired straight at the stopper before Maisie Joyce’s free-kick was deflected away.

Youth product Milan Shakespeare-

Simms, also making her full debut after coming through the under-18s, was a threat down the left and after good work earned the Lionesses a corner from which Amy Nash doubled the lead after a scramble in the box.

Five minutes before half-time the hosts made it 3-0. Some quick footwork from Alyssa Miranda after a run down the left drew a foul in the box. Joyce took responsibility and scored from twelve yards for the second successive weekend.

Having been so dominant, Millwall were guilty of an unusual lapse to give the visitors a goal and some hope before the break.

But the Lionesses came roaring back out for the second half and Miranda made it 4-1 when she produced

a composed finish after the ball dropped to her inside the box.

Miranda was in the mood for more and got her second when she finished into the far corner after a brilliant ball from the right by Catarina Pita.

Millwall should have added to that lead. Chapman had an effort from distance saved before more good work on the wing from Miranda set up Joyce but she put her attempt just over the crossbar.

Pita was also dangerous in attack and fired over twice.

But not adding to the score was only a minor disappointment as Millwall secured their place in the first round where they will meet AFC Wimbledon.

Winger makes senior debut after loan switch

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WINGER Jayden Davis was pitched straight in for his debut in senior football as King’s Lynn Town lost 1-0 at home to Boreham Wood on Tuesday.

Davis, 19, had signed for the National League side on an initial one-month loan deal earlier that day.

The club said that “feedback indicates he is an exciting winger who we hope lights up the Walks with some dazzling displays. Millwall hope he continues his development at King’s Lynn Town.

“King’s Lynn Town would like to

say a special thanks to [Professional Development Squad boss] Kevin Nugent at Millwall for his assistance is getting this deal done.”

Scott Boden scored the only goal of the game to leave King’s Lynn above the relegation zone on goal difference.

Boreham Wood are third.

King’s Lynn are away at Weymouth this Saturday before hosting Walsall in the first round of the FA Cup the following weekend.

Meanwhile, Sutton are back into the play-off spots in League Two after their 3-1 victory at ten-man Colchester United.

minute through Freddie Sears but the U’s levelled ten minutes later when David Ajiboye finished from Rob Milsom’s cross.

Millwall striker Isaac Olaofe was then involved in one of the game’s key moments when he turned the ball towards goal after goalkeeper Shamal George had dropped a corner but Samson Tovide deliberately handled on the line and was sent off. Milsom scored the resultant penalty.

There will be no meeting of two other Millwall loanees in the FA Cup after Junior Tiensia’s Dover Athletic were shocked by Yate Town in their rescheduled fourth qualifying round replay.

James Harding’s 75th-minute goal for Southern League Premier Division South side Yate – who are two divisions below National League Dover – secured a first-round proper tie for the first time in nine years.

Yate will host fifth-tier Yeovil Town – for whom Millwall defender Dan Moss has been a regular during his loan – on Saturday, November 6.

League Division One South East – will be in Rotherhithe on Sunday, November 14.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BILLY MITCHELL insists he won’t settle for being an “average” Championship midfielder – and has someone in the dressing room to use as an example of where he wants to be.

Mitchell, 20, has already played thirteen times this season and is battling for a regular spot in arguably the most competitive area of Millwall’s team.

In boss Gary Rowett’s preferred 5-23 formation and with everyone in the squad available, there are six senior midfielders fighting for two places.

Mitchell is ahead Ben Thompson, and he was chosen to replace the suspended George Saville over Maikel Kieftenbeld last weekend.

This Saturday we might get a clearer idea of his place in the pecking order when Saville returns, though George Evans is a doubt to face Huddersfield Town.

The other player in contention, Ryan Leonard, like Mitchell has also played right wing-back this season. The battle between those two in the middle of the park is too close to call.

Saville is Millwall’s main man in the centre of the pitch, and perhaps one of the most underrated in the Championship. Despite an impressive six goals from midfield last season for Middlesbrough, his move back to the Lions went under the radar in the summer’s second-tier business.

Mitchell revealed he recently had a conversation with Jed Wallace in which he spelled out his ambition.

One particular area where Mitchell is keen to improve is scoring. He has netted just once in 40 appearances in all competitions.

In Saville he has plenty of knowledge to tap into as he tries to improve his goal threat.

“I’ve got a good relationship with Sav and am sure if I asked him for advice he’d do his best to give it to me,” Mitchell said.

“I was actually speaking to Jed about this the other day, about not wanting to just settle for being an average Championship midfielder.

You’ve always got to want to try to have more to your game rather than just being happy passing it sideways and square.

“You have to eventually try to affect games, whether that be with throughballs or assists and goals. And obviously there’s no better person to look to than Sav. “In that season after they came up [in 2017-18] he scored ten goals. They are fantastic numbers for a central midfielder and if I can begin to add what he has in his game and the way he can score goals, that’s something I’m working on really hard to do.

“Against Bristol City I had a chance when Sav set me up right at the end and perhaps should have scored. Away to Barnsley I had a half-chance right at the end of the game.

“I feel like I’m getting more of those types of opportunities. Now it’s just a matter of having a bit more quality and converting them.”

Mitchell does extra work on his game at the training ground.

He continued: “Obviously you have to do your training with the team and whatever drills have been laid out for that particular day with the group the focus. But then I think at the end of training it’s important to do some

“The coaches are always very helpful with that, Robbo [Paul Robinson], Ads [Adam Barrett] and Dave Carolan as well. Whether that be working on tight spaces, or, I’ve worked quite hard this season on my ability to switch the ball with a flat trajectory trying to get it out to the wing-backs and switch play.

That’s developed a little bit.

“And also the finishing aspect, arriving into the box late and having a bit more composure to put the ball into the back of the net.

“These things take time, it doesn’t happen overnight.”

As well as helping each other out with things, the battle is fierce every day to secure a place in the team.

“Definitely. We all support each other and that’s ultimately being a good team player, but that’s not to say we all don’t also want to be the first name on that midfield part of the team sheet each week,” Mitchell said.

“All you can do is just try to be the best version of yourself in training every day and in games. I feel like I’ve had some opportunities coming on to try and affect games as a substitute for the last 20 minutes. I feel like I’ve done pretty well.

“Hopefully I’ll be able to crack that midfield position soon. All you can do is try to the give the gaffer a difficult decision.

“I think every one of the players in those midfield positions has a slightly different set of skills. Perhaps who he selects might also be depending on the opposition as well as form.”

One player who has been a fixture in the team, starting every league game, is Saville’s Northern Ireland international team-mate Daniel Ballard.

Ballard moved on loan from Arsenal in the summer. He has made his mark on the squad.

“I’ve been really impressed, I watched Northern Ireland’s progress quite

closely as well,” Mitchell said.

“Me and Dan sit beside each other in the dressing room on match-day. Since he’s come to the club we’ve become good friends and been out with each other a few times.

“It’s fantastic when you play next to Dan, whether that’s in midfield or right wing-back, I’ve got so much confidence in him to go and win the tackles and win the headers. It makes my job, or anyone else playing next to him, a lot easier knowing you’ve got someone as solid as he is.”

Mitchell, a boyhood Lions fan, has an added advantage this season. He’s an all-action player and this is the first full season he has played with that extra shot of adrenaline supplied by postlockdown full-capacity Den stands.

“Without sounding clichéd, it’s the best feeling ever,” Mitchell said. “Before this season I hadn’t really experienced that properly. They definitely give you that little lift which we’ve needed a few

times this season.

“It’s been a pleasure so far and if we can get a few more good results they might even get a bit louder.

“I was saying to my family, it’s quite a surreal experience. After that first whistle you kind of have to pinch yourself the stadium is so loud, you have to realise it’s game-time now, get out of your head.”

After a slow start to the season, the Lions have lost just one of their last ten games and are tenth in the table, level on points with fifth.

Mitchell added: “We as a club know that there is no team in this league that we can’t go and beat if we perform to our full capabilities.

“It’s just trying to piece all those bits of the puzzle together and have it come together on match-day, which perhaps at the start of the season they weren’t quite.

“One of those pieces of the puzzle is probably confidence.”

By Alex Grace at the Den johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S PROBABLY fair to say Tom Bradshaw’s Millwall career has never really taken off as he or Lions fans hoped it would, but last Saturday was certainly his day.

He deservedly struck twice to change the game and the mood at what boss Gary Rowett later called an “edgy” stadium.

Bradshaw joined the club from Barnsley in August 2018, which at the time was for a club-record fee, but he sustained season-ending knee ligament damage that November and has struggled to nail down a regular place in the side.

Chances have been relatively limited for the 29-year-old and with his contract due to expire at the end of the season this performance should do wonders for his belief and confidence that he can get another.

Bradshaw netted his second brace for the club – and at an absolutely crucial time. Stepping up when he was needed should go some way to convincing Rowett that he should be rewarded with a new deal.

The mood at half-time in SE16 was not a happy one. Romaine Sawyers’ first goal for Stoke meant that it was the visiting supporters doing the cheering – and the

jeering of their former manager Rowett – at the break.

The Potters were deservedly in front and threatening to earn their first win in London since November 2014, a 2-1 victory over Tottenham.

Bartosz Bialkowski was called into action after just three minutes, getting down well to prevent a Jacob Brown header from nestling in the net. Stoke, who had lost their two previous games, looked determined for that not to become a slump.

Michael O’Neil’s side had a big penalty claim just a few minutes later. Billy Mitchell clashed with Sam Surridge in the box but there was no whistle or punishment for the Millwall man – much to the frustration of the visiting faithful.

But the Lions got no such let-off 20 minutes in. The defence went to sleep in a similar way to what had happened against Luton the previous week.

Sawyers found himself in a pocket of space on the edge of the box and lashed a left-footed drive past Bialkowski and inside the right-hand post.

Bialkowski – one of the clean-sheet kings of the division in the last two seasons – has some catching up to do with only shut-outs against Swansea, Barnsley and Bristol City so far this campaign.

There was a tension in the three home stands as the away end lapped it up with some colourful chants aimed at Rowett, who was sacked by Stoke in January 2019 after a promotion challenge failed to materialise.

Home frustrations increased after Jed Wallace broke away and had the option of Sheyi Ojo to his right but chose to go alone. It turned out to be the wrong choice as he was crowded out.

The fans have been calling for the Lions boss to change system at home, and when midfielder George Evans went down early in the second half with a pulled calf muscle, Rowett sent for Matt Smith.

Millwall switched to 4-4-2 and Smith showed his impact again off the bench, bringing a big physical presence to the side up front to give Bradshaw something to play off.

Rowett’s decision was rewarded just three minutes after Smith went on. Ojo received a pass from Scott Malone in the inside-left channel before taking on Leo Ostigard and crossing low, Bradshaw tapping in to get his first of the season and bump the on-loan Liverpool winger’s assist tally up to two.

Ten minutes later, the home fans were off their seats once again as the comeback was completed. Dan Ballard – who showed his versatility by moving to rightback after Smith came on – lifted a freekick to the edge of the box. Jake Cooper headed down to Ryan Leonard and in a repeat of the first goal, Bradshaw stole in on the blind side of the defence as the low cross arrived from the left and had the simplest of tasks from three yards.

The second-half performance will give Rowett plenty to think about before the next home game, against another of his former clubs, Derby County, on November 6.

Millwall have a unique advantage when playing at home. They have one of the most influential fan bases around and one that can make playing at The Den so difficult for visiting teams.

After Smith came on the home side played to their strengths, making the game chaotic. Rowett said afterwards that Millwall “thrived on the chaos” more

than their opponents. It’s a balance that will have to be struck against the Rams, as the clamour again is sure to be for 4-42 starting out.

But for now Rowett can savour this.

Who doesn’t love a win against a former club? For the majority of the game the Lions chief had to listen to chants about his style of football being, ahem, agricultural.

After the final whistle, Rowett entered the pitch and headed for the corner of the Dockers Stand to applaud the Lions fans who had supported their team throughout the game. He did also give a wave to the away end. In a little dig at them in his post-match press conference, he reminded those supporters that since he left the club he has an unbeaten record in five games against them, three wins and two draws.

The Lions are now third in the Championship form table, having lost just one of their last ten games. A fourth win in five has them joint-fifth in the table.

They have three fixtures left before the next international break. Two of them, Huddersfield and Reading, are teams in and around them.

Take four or six points from them, on top of a good result against Derby, and they could be in the top six heading into November.

No Millwall fan could have a quarrel with that.

Millwall bolstered by returning pair But midfielder injured and attacker a doubt

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL WELCOME back midfielder George Saville and striker Benik Afobe for their Championship clash against Huddersfield Town this Saturday.

Saville was suspended for the win over Stoke City last weekend while Afobe couldn’t play against his parent club.

But as has so often happened this season, when Gary Rowett has players returning there are more heading in the direction of the treatment room.

George Evans – who started against the Potters with a protective cast on the hand he broke at Sheffield United the previous Tuesday – pulled his calf last weekend. He is set to miss the fixture and could be out until the international break, which comes after this game and home tests against Reading and Derby.

Mason Bennett, meanwhile, just can’t seem to get going this campaign. He has started just once this season in five appearances and in the seven minutes he was on the pitch against the Blades he took a blow to the knee which ruled him out of the Stoke game.

Bennett has been training this week and Rowett will make a late decision on whether to involve the attacker.

Saville will likely go straight back into the side. Rowett praised Billy Mitchell for his performance against Stoke, and the Lions boss has a tough choice who to play beside Saville, with Maikel Kieftenbeld and Ryan Leonard the other options, the latter if Danny McNamara returns at right wing-back.

“We’ve got some good midfielders, different types of players. Having Sav back available is obviously a big one for us,” Rowett said.

“It’s important to have those options where if someone’s run themselves into the ground on a Wednesday night you’d rather be able to have someone else fresh for the Saturday. That’s just how it works, particularly in those forward areas.

Ojo can be match-winner

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT says Sheyi Ojo still has “bags of potential” and the Millwall manager wants the on-loan Liverpool winger to now show he can be a Lions match-winner.

Ojo, 24, got his second assist of the season and first at The Den when he set up Tom Bradshaw for the equaliser in the 2-1 win against Stoke City last Saturday.

Former Fulham and Cardiff loanee Ojo collected a pass from Scott Malone on the left edge of the box and took out the entire Potters defence, giving Bradshaw a tap-in. Bradshaw later showed his appreciation by tweeting: “Deliveroo, bro, delivered right to your door.”

Rowett has a good relationship with Liverpool, who have trusted the Lions boss and his staff with Ojo’s development.

“Sheyi is a young player still, he’s got bags of potential and what we want to try to do is really see that potential coming out,” Rowett said.

“He’s got so much ability, he’s got so much natural athleticism. We’ve seen a lot more glimpses of those moments and I still think there is a lot more to come from Sheyi.

“He’s got more to come in terms of winning games for us and scoring goals and getting assists.

“But it was a lovely ball in for Bradders. I know Bradders spoke about it in his post-match interview.

It was a lovely low ball into the box and it was very difficult for defenders to deal with.”

Rowett said: “It’s something we’ve looked at when we’re chasing a game, can we drop an attacking

winger into a wing-back position and put another striker on without a change of formation?

“Danny McNamara has played there in training on the opposite side and he’s comfortable.

“We’ve got a few players that can play there but hopefully we won’t have to find out, I suppose is the answer.”

He said: “At this stage of the season it’s just about building that consistency in your performances, I don’t think you really worry too much about where you are in the league.

“Obviously you want to be towards the top end but I don’t think it has too much bearing at the minute.

“What I would say is over this calendar year we have been very consistent. We’ve picked up quite a lot of points in comparison to other Championship sides.

“I’m quite happy we’re in the mix for those top-six positions and it’s about us just maintaining those levels of performances and trying to improve.”

GARY ROWETT hasn’t ruled out adding to his squad in January – but cautioned it’s not always the automatically right thing to do midway through a season.

Millwall’s recruitment team have continued to build a list of potential targets to give Rowett options if the squad is hit by injuries or if he feels there is an area that can push them on. Goal-scoring remains an issue – the Lions have scored the least of any side in the top half – and the club were open to bringing in another central striker in the last window.

Rowett feels it’s too early to be definitive about potential January plans.

“You always look at areas you want to improve on. Sometimes January is a good time to do that, sometimes it’s a time when you’re better off leaving

Olaofe, 21, has hit the ground running again this season, this time in Sutton’s first-ever campaign in League Two, and had scored three goals in four games before the mid-week trip to Colchester.

The Lions recalled Danny McNamara from St Johnstone last January, but that was because boss Gary Rowett wanted him for a regular first-team spot.

“With all our young loans, they’ve all been doing pretty well,” Rowett said. “The likes of Dan Moss went on to Yeovil and is doing well.

“The same with Alex Mitchell at Leyton Orient, Tyler Brey before his injury.

“Hayden [Muller] has had games when he’s done quite well also.

“We wanted to have a look at Tanto preseason but injury stopped us doing that so we felt the best thing for him to do was to go and play games again.

“The aim of all of those loans is they are going to come back into our team at some point.

“Otherwise we’d just try to sell them and let them move on. They’ve all got potential to be first-team regulars.

“If you look at those players, along with Billy Mitchell and Danny McNamara, then you’ve got a real core of five or six players that could play for our first team in the next twelve months.

“We’re open-minded about it but the main thing is they are developing and they are getting regular game-time.

“Unless you can guarantee them that there’s no point bringing them back from a successful loan when they can carry on scoring goals like Isaac has.”
