Helen Hayes and Harriet Harman, the other Southwark MPs, said this week that they have also faced horrific abuse and threats - but are looking for ways to keep connected with their constituents while also keeping themselves safe.

Coyle, the MP Bermondsey and Old Southwark, has received several death threats and carries an alarm with him at all times on police advice. Along with staff, he has been attacked and spat on in his office on Jamaica Road. On one occasion a man had to be wrestled to the ground during a weekly advice surgery. The office’s windows have been smashed, and he has been targeted at both work and his home address – including with death threats.

Coyle told the News that he wouldn't stop holding weekly face-to-face surgeries but that walk-ins would no longer be accepted. Anyone who wants to book an

appointment will also need to provide a valid address, so that they can be vetted before the booking is accepted. "It's for the safety of myself and my staff," he said.

He said on Friday: "Deeply saddened and shocked by the awful news today. My thoughts & prayers are with the family of Sir David Amess. No MP or their family or team should fear being attacked when simply trying to help people... David was one of the most pleasant amongst us."

As ordered by Home Secretary Priti Patel, like all MPs Coyle, Hayes and Harman have also had additional risk assessments carried out by the police in the wake of the killing of Sir David.

MP for Dulwich and West Norwood Helen Hayes confirmed to the News that she had experienced threats and abusive behaviour in her role as MP. “From discussions with parliamentary colleagues, I believe this is a nearuniversal experience,” she said.

However, she remains keen to maintain contact with the people of Dulwich and West Norwood in her surgeries.

“I believe that it is vitally important for MPs to remain accessible to our constituents,” she said.

Hayes spoke to the News previously about harassment from a constituent who bombarded her with over 500 emails.

The emails included explicit images of a naked man, and a picture of the Cerne Abbas chalk-man - a giant outline of a naked man with an erect penis carved into a Dorset hillside.

She said although she regularly received threats, abuse and disturbing emails, safety concerns had not led to her considering standing down, stating at the time: “On a day-to-day level I’ve never felt that I had to organise life around what the worst person might do.”

She did add, however, that she did not experience the level of abuse or threats experienced by her colleagues.

MP for Camberwell and Peckham Harriet Harman did not respond to a request to comment on Sir David Amess’ death and her own experiences of abuse.

In a television interview, however, she stated that the attack on Sir David was an attack on democracy, adding that it was crucial for MPs to stay connected with the local community while staying safe.

In a previous conversation with another

publication, Harman revealed that she had been subject to a decade of harassment by a former prisoner in the 1980s.

This led to court proceedings after he told doctors he fantasised about killing her - although the case was dropped when doctors declined to give evidence.

The MP said nothing because she did not want to appear to be a victim or to be weak, adding that there were likely to be many female MPs who were also suffering threats and harassment and were not saying anything.

Her husband, in a radio interview, similarly stated that Harman, “like every other woman MP, has had threats of different kinds.”

Sir David, who had been a Conservative MP since 1983 and represented the Southend West constituency in Essex, was stabbed multiple times during his regular meeting with constituents at Belfairs Methodist Church in Leigh-on-Sea. Sir David, 69, who was married with four daughters and a son, is the second MP to be killed in recent years following the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox in June 2016.

25-year-old man Ali Harbi Ali is currently being detained under the Terrorism Act. Officers have until Friday to interrogate him. Police have searched three addresses in London as part of their investigation.

Spotlight on: The Flag Twins “If I had to describe myself in three words it's, skin care, good teeth and blonde hair,” says Karl.

Artist duo Karl and Kevin, also known as the Flag Twins, are multifaceted artists who started as models before moving into all manner of creative endeavours, including their own bi-annual arts and culture magazine.

Now they want to showcase their talents on Peckham's Finest.

“I’m the embodiment of what it means to be a maverick,” said Karl.

“I wear my heart on my back not my sleeve so I have easy access to it."

He added: “I just say that I'm the world’s evangelist, I basically answer the world’s problems with creative solutions.

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Last night Peckham was thrust into the limelight with ITV 2’s newest show, Peckham’s Finest.

While the programme has drawn comparisons to similar-style shows The Only Way Is Essex and Made in Chelsea, it’s producers promise a fresh and exciting approach that reimagines the genre for a modern-day, tech-savvy audience.

Much like those shows, it is not clear how much is scripted or structured by producers.

Kevin, one of the Flag Twins in the show’s lineup, said: “Peckham’s Finest is an avant-garde, cosmopolitan version of what it means to be a true Londoner.

London as a city is rich in culture and Peckham perpetuates that culture.

“I think Peckham’s Finest is a story of hope, success and of individuals just trying to figure themselves out and using Peckham as a springboard to get out into

the wider big bad world."

His brother Karl added: “The best thing about Peckham is that anything can happen at any second. I just like the spontaneity of it and that’s where I get my spontaneity from."

Peter Tierney, Commissioning Editor at ITV2, said: “The show promises stories full of warmth, humour and drama, told in a really contemporary way.”

“With a truly authentic, unique and diverse cast, the series will reflect life in Peckham in a way that our viewers can engage with and relate to.”

Peckham’s Finest member, model, and student Isla Loba said: “Peckham’s Finest is an insight into different dynamics of people's lives and different types of people, whether it be from different professions as well.

“It's a good outlook on changing the perspective of how people view Peckham.”

The cast includes a BMX coach, Radio DJ, fashion boutique owner, dance teacher and choreographer, body positive coach

and influencer, drag performer, barista, street food chefs, a DJ and promoter and a salon owner.

The show is produced by the people who made The Masked Singer, a slightly bizarre show in which celebrities perform songs for a panel of judges… while disguised in bizarre outfits.

The show will soon return for its third season.

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk An estimated 1,000 people protested against Southwark Council’s refusal to remove the Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) in Dulwich, following a public consultation in which two thirds of people asked for them to be removed.

The protest, which took place last Saturday, October 16, saw the huge crowd converge on the main junction in Dulwich Village, and included disabled people who have been particularly affected by the introduction of the LTNs. Since their introduction in March 2020, LTNs have been a significant source of controversy across London. Southwark Council cites government guidelines on improving air quality and safety for pedestrians in key areas, but many residents complain that the system simply diverts these issues elsewhere, and discriminates against those who rely on vehicles to get around.

In the council’s survey, more than 3,000 people in Dulwich - between 64 and 69 per cent - said they wanted the system scrapped, compared with just 800 who wanted to keep them.

Speaking at the protest, Clive Rates, of Dulwich Alliance and chair of the Dulwich Village, College Road and Woodyard Lane residents’ Association, said: "What we have here is a disaster. A handful of roads have become pollution-free, while others, already illegally polluted, are shouldering their traffic.

“These road closures have dislocated people’s lives and forced them to make longer journeys and generate ever more emissions. This makes climate change worse, not better.

‘They promised us ‘traffic evaporation’ – it never happened. Traffic evaporation!

The only thing which has evaporated around here is support for Southwark Council!

“We are here to demand that Southwark remove these road closures and come up with something that actually works.”

Among these, an 83-year-old widow explained how the extra driving she had to do for her regular GP appointments – much of it sitting in near stationary traffic – upset her, and at times had driven her to tears.

“It has split Dulwich in two, and has led to real unhappiness, hostility and bitterness between people,” the widow said.

Another resident, who works as a carer for their mother, also reported that the unpredictable traffic often left them in tears as they tried to get their mother to various appointments.

Meanwhile, spokesperson for Dulwich Alliance and One Dulwich Richard Aldwinckle reported the results of the protestors’ own survey, which they state found that: “Over 95 per cent of traders here in Dulwich Village, and a similar percentage of shops and businesses

in Melbourne Grove, Grove Vale and Lordship Lane, say the LTNs are causing them huge problems and threatening the future viability of these roads as shopping centres.”

One of the main justifications for the LTNs provided by the council is that 77 per cent of people stated that improving air quality on roads was a priority.

However it is worth noting that this does not necessarily mean 77 per cent of people want LTNs - just that they view air quality as a priority.

LTNs are also a significant form of income for Southwark Council. As reported by the News at the time, in the first seven weeks of Dulwich Village’s LTN, Southwark Council issued an enormous 22,424 penalties.

Even if each of these paid the cheaper earlier fee of £65, Southwark Council would have made £1,457,560 in those first seven weeks.

At that point the pair drove onto the street and began verbally abusing Roger.

“They stuck around, looking for a fight,” he said. “With their helmets still on, brave people that they were. They got more and more angry, kicking at the furniture.

“They barged into the shop, and one appeared to headbutt a woman while still wearing his helmet. I don’t know if she managed to dodge it.

“I was just dreading that they would trash the shop and look for money, but they just wanted a fight.

“For ten minutes, or what felt like ten minutes, it was just complete and utter mayhem.”

One of the men threw a chair at the window of the café, but didn’t manage to break it.

Customers, including three children, took refuge at the back of the shop as one of the moped drivers is said to have threatened a seventeen-year-old member of staff, allegedly saying that he was carrying a knife.

When officers arrived at 10:48, the men had fled the scene. According to a statement from the Met, there was

no trace of the suspects following a thorough search.

Roger described the men as white and in their early 20s. He estimated one to be around six foot three, the other five foot 11.

LTNs have been a significant source of controversy since their introduction in 2020.

The closure of Calton Avenue and the Dulwich Village junction in particular has been highly contentious due to the resulting disruption and traffic displacement.

Following a consultation with residents, on September 18 2021 Southwark Council announced their intention to continue the existing traffic controls in Dulwich, while adjusting them to link with school drop-off and pickup times. They are also aiming to improve the visibility of the LTNs. According to a study conducted by Dulwich Village Association in July 2021, 22 of 26 traders surveyed said they wanted the road reopened. The remaining four did not respond to the survey.

However, Roger stated that he was in favour of the Calton Avenue LTN, and was surprised to hear about the survey

Southwark Council has made a number of adjustments to the Dulwich LTNs in response to feedback, as reported on their website.

These include reducing the timings on the traffic restrictions, so that they are in line with school street timings, and changing the timings on the cameras.

Additionally, Southwark Blue Badge holders have been made exempt from the LTNs, as have emergency vehicles travelling via Derwent Grove and at Calton Avenue, Court Lane and Dulwich Village junction.

Apparently responding to the changes, Clive Rates stated in his speech: “Tweaking the timing of one-way camera restrictions an hour here and there will make hardly any difference.”

Cllr Catherine Rose, Cabinet Member for Transport, Parks and Sport, told the News: “This was never a ballot, and there are strong views on both sides of the

argument. Restricting traffic and parking is not popular, but it is necessary.

“The government has made it clear to councils that it wants to see us bringing in measures that increase walking and cycling, and we know that air quality is a major concern for Londoners. Too many people on busy roads have poor air quality.

“Our temporary measures in Dulwich have had an extraordinary impact in increasing active travel and reducing car use, and so we want to maintain those changes. Dulwich is also an area with the highest levels of car ownership in the borough.

“As a highways authority we must maintain a safe road network, not only for cars, but for pedestrians, bus users and those cycling. I want my role to be about delivering streets for people, better public transport, more buses and train services improved for the whole borough.”

two moped drivers seen ‘attacking village cafe over LTN dispute’

charles@southwarknews.co.uk Two moped drivers were seen bursting into a Dulwich Village cafe and threatened customers after being told they couldn’t drive through a low traffic neighbourhood on Sunday October 10.

Au Ciel Patisserie on Calton Avenue became the unlikely site of a violent confrontation as two moped drivers tried to throw chairs through the window and assaulted one of the customers.

The café’s director Roger Wilkinson, 66, said the event was “absolutely horrendous.”

It started when he heard raised voices on the street at around 10:40am and went outside to investigate.

The two are said to have tried to drive through a low traffic neighbourhood (LTN) zone blocked off by planters, while a customer of the cafe was telling them not to.

“They were abusing him, telling him to shut the **** up and trying to drive through the area,” said Roger.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe residents have been warned to be extra careful after a man approached several lone women in suspicious circumstances in Stave Hill Ecological Park last week.

The man came up to Rebeka Clark, who runs the park, and one of her volunteers, as well as a third local woman, to ask for help finding his nephew's keys in a grassy part of the park. Several others reported very similar stories on social media.

Ms Clark was approached last Wednesday evening, October 15, at about 5pm: "I was just locking up the compound ready to leave, when a chap came up to me. He said his nephew had lost the keys somewhere over there in a grassy area and could I help him. There was no sign of a nephew.

"I told him that when keys are found they are brought into me. No keys had been handed in that day. He asked me again to help him.

"I said again 'you're more than welcome to come back tomorrow. It's a very welltrafficked area, they're likely to be found'.

But the man persisted, asking Ms Clark again if he could go back with her and help

him find the keys.

"To which I just deliberately misunderstood and said 'if they are handed in I can let you know. I’m really sorry I’ve got to catch up with my colleague who’s just down the path there.'

"It wasn’t that the guy was frightening, he appeared perfectly respectable. There was just something that made me not quite comfortable... Something was a little off."

Ms Clark's mild suspicion was taken to

the next level when she was called by one of the female park volunteers later that evening.

This woman told Ms Clark that when left the park at 3.30pm she was approached by a man who told her his cousin had dropped keys and asked her to help.

The volunteer replied that he needed to speak to Ms Clark who would let him know if any keys had been handed in.

Similarly to Ms Clark's story, the man asked again: "Yes but can you help me

find them? They’re in here". The woman apologised and said she was on her way home and running late.

Ms Clark said she asked the volunteer for a description and the same man appeared to have spoken to both of them.

The next morning she called the police, who "were immaculate" in the speed with which they handled the call, she said.

Another local resident who did not want to be named was also in touch with the police over the same matter. They said that officers saw the man who set off "like Linford Christie". Police were eventually able to track him down to the south of the park.

The man reportedly gave an address that was not local to the area. Police were not able to arrest him.

Ms Clark added: "Unfortunately the police are able to question people for suspicious behaviour, but they are not allowed to detain people who have been asking people to help them find a set of keys that their nephew has lost."

Ms Clark and the anonymous resident both said that the police commended locals on their teamwork in quickly communicating the suspicious behaviour of this man.

She added that the park has changed its working procedures so that no one is leaving by themselves or working by themselves any more.

Festoon lights ‘obscuring our gibbet’ say Clink

"I think it would be very sensible if we followed the police advice to remain vigilant," she added. "We need to keep our eyes open and be aware."

Asked what people should do if an unknown man asks them to help look for keys in the park, she said: "Tell them 'no I’m sorry, I don’t have time'. And I would strongly suggest that if it is a young man who says his nephew has lost a set of keys - call the police."

Police said: "On Thursday, 14 October, officers from the Surrey Docks Safer Neighbourhoods Team responded to reports of a man acting suspiciously in Russia Dock Woodlands, SE16. It was alleged that the man had approached lone women in the area asking them to help him look for his keys.

"Officers stopped and spoke to a man at length. His details were taken but no evidence of any offences was discovered.

Officers have continued to carry out patrols in the area in the days since the incident.

"While no offences were identified on this occasion, the members of the public who called the police did the right thing.

We would always encourage the public to call 999 if they are concerned about someone’s behaviour and think they or another person may be at risk."

Witnesses described the man as black, in his 20s and about 6ft tall.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The owner of a Borough museum dedicated to one of "England's oldest and most notorious" prisons has hit out at Southwark Council for making its display of torture devices look like a “cheap seaside amusement arcade” by letting a new restaurant put up bright lighting next door.

Ray Rankin, who has run the Clink Prison Museum on the ancient Clink Street for decades, said he wasn't properly consulted before the council gave planning permission in May for the new branch of steak chain Flat Iron to put up an array of "festoon lighting" outside.

The council maintains that it carried out the proper consultation.

The entrances to the museum and the restaurant are right next to each other, so the Flat Iron lighting comes within a few feet of the various grisly torture devices outside the Clink. Mr Rankin said that the atmosphere of the museum, which has been in business since 1989, is being "ruined" by the recent addition.

The new lighting is “making the building look like a cheap seaside amusement arcade which is totally detrimental to my business being a medieval museum specialising in local history,” he said in an email to the council.

“These new frames and lights have ruined the look and feel of my entrance along with obscuring the view of our gibbet,” he added.

Clink Street is part of the council's Borough High Street conservation area. A 1997 report by the Museum of London said the site was of "regional, if not national importance." The council says its role is "to ensure that character and appearance of conservation areas is preserved and enhanced [through] the

A report recommending permission be granted said that “the festoon lighting would have a subtle illumination and is not envisaged to result in undue light pollution towards the neighbouring residential units located on the upperfloors of Soho Wharf or on the opposite side of Clink Street.”

A council planning officer said they sent a letter to the Clink Prison Museum in good time. But Mr Rankin said staff did not see it because the museum was closed due to government Covid-19 rules.

The officer added that the design and conservation department of the council was consulted about the lighting and worked with Flat Iron to "minimise any impact" on the character and appearance of the surrounding area. They added that they were sorry that Mr Rankin was unhappy with the decision but they would not be revoking it.

Residents on the same side of the narrow street were consulted about the lighting and people in twelve properties were consulted in total.

But people living across the road were not asked for their views because planning officers did not consider them close enough to be affected by the lighting.

One man who lives on the other side of the street said this meant the council had made its decision without gathering enough information.

Both Mr Rankin and other locals were also concerned that, as was normal in Covid-19 lockdown, the council did not carry out a site visit before giving permission, instead making its decision based on computer research including Google Street View.

A council spokesperson said: “We have standard planning procedures in place so that all applications, objections and supporters can be heard fairly. As a local planning authority, we are required to undertake a formal period of public consultation, prior to deciding a planning application.

“In line with agreed lockdown guidelines, site visits were paused and our officers gathered information on applications through use of technology

and asking applicants to provide the necessary materials.

“Our officers recently carried out a postdecision visit to the Flat Iron site. They found the luminance of the new festoon lighting to be at an acceptable level, minimising any light pollution.”

Flat Iron was contacted for comment but did not reply before the News went to press.

The bank said the branch in Surrey Quays shopping centre would reopen "soon", without providing an exact date.

A spokesperson for Halifax told the News: “Our colleagues were surprised to discover a squirrel in the branch on Monday morning, after the tiny trespasser had made its way into the building over the weekend.

"The fluffy fugitive unfortunately left the branch in a bit of a mess, which is now being thoroughly cleaned for the safety of our customers and colleagues, and will reopen soon.

“The squirrel has been safely rescued by professionals and lives to fight another day.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Planning permission is set to be given for a controversial 'infill' development of eighteen new council homes in Bermondsey.

The eight-storey block, planned for the site of a car park Matson House on the Slippers Place Estate on Southwark Park Road, is likely to be given the green light at a planning meeting on Wednesday (October 20) after Southwark Council planners recommended permission be granted.

Of the flats, seven will have one bedroom, seven will be two-bedroom and four will be three-bedroom. One of the flats will be wheelchair-accessible.

Planners said: "The proposal would also make an efficient use of land to provide

residential dwellings which would be consistent with the established residential land use of the Slippers Place Estate and the wider surrounding area."

Some current residents of the estate are against the plans, as we have previously reported, saying they are worried about a loss of light because of potential overshadowing.

The new building would be two storeys higher than Matson House and three storeys above Hickling House, another nearby block. Planners said " the additional height would sit comfortably in this location". They added that "the proposed development would not adversely impact on neighbouring occupiers" in terms of overshadowing.

The new development will also mean twelve parking spaces are lost. Car parks are not protected by Southwark planning

policy. Planners said there should be enough room in nearby car parks to make up the shortfall. The proposals also include 35 bike parking spaces.

If given final approval on Wednesday, building work is likely to begin next summer and last for a year until summer 2023.

The decision on the Matson House development was supposed to be made in September but was pushed back to give the planning team time to make a site visit.

The development is part of a wider Southwark programme to build council flats on spaces that the local authority considers under-used, to help tackle the huge housing need in the borough. Many proposed sites have been controversial, as current residents think they would lose open space.

The Welsford Street homes, a mix of three-bed, four-storey and two-bed, threestorey, will be offered to local council tenants in housing need.

The houses, built by Bonds Builders, were handed over to Southwark Council last Thursday, October 14. They use heat pumps, a low-carbon heating and hot water system that absorbs heat from the outside air, the council said. This should lower the houses' carbon footprint while also reducing energy bills.

The development at De Crespigny Park was given the green light

by Southwark Council’s planning committee on Tuesday, October 5.

It will see old and outdated buildings currently used by South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAHMS) demolished to make way for a car-free housing development of one, two and threebed flats with communal gardens.

Half the homes (79) will be ‘affordable’, of which seventy per cent will be at social rent with the rest available through shared ownership.

The remainder are for private sale.

A large number of objections were received during a public consultation.

A total of 105 representations were made including objections from The Camberwell Society and Grove Lane Residents Association.

In total there were three letters of support but 100 objections, with many arguing that more hospital bed space and social rent housing should have been priorities for any development.

There are also concerns the large number of homes will lead to further overcrowding in the area

and at Denmark Hill station, and negatively impact the character of the conservation area it sits within.

The planning officers’ report discussed at the meeting argued: “The design would be of a high quality making a positive contribution to the townscape.

“Whilst there would be some harm to the setting of the nearby heritage assets, this is considered to be less than substantial harm which would be outweighed by the wider benefits of the proposal.”

The trust intends to put funds generated from the development back into its mental health services.

CAHMS will be relocating from the site, which includes Mapother House, Michael Rutter Centre and Professorial Buildings, to the new £65 million Pears Maudsley Centre for Children and Young People, now under construction in Denmark Hill and expected to open in 2023.

David Bradley, chief executive of South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Last [week's] decision helps to ensure we can provide modern facilities fit for the highest standards of 21st century mental health care.

“We also take our responsibility as an anchor institution very seriously and the 50 per cent affordable housing at the heart of these plans will be a significant boost for families and individuals in need of high-quality homes in Southwark.”

Work starting on Blue Bermondsey homes

The Southwark Park Road building, near the Blue, will range in size from two storey terraces to five and six

storeys. Developers Higgins, who will be selling the private flats, are due to complete building work in 2023.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said, “I’m delighted that works have started on this fantastic development which will provide 26 much-needed new council homes for the local community."

Of the 26 new council homes,

eleven will be 3-bed flats, eight will be 2-bed and seven will be onebed. Six flats will be wheelchairaccessible. Thirteen local council tenants who need new housing will be able to apply for flats in the new development. The new scheme will also include 150 square metres of retail space.

Remembering Geoff Hill on his Bermondsey patch

Our former journalist and ITV Editor was laid to rest last week

Geoff and Bermondsey News team in pub Former Southwark News journalist Geoff Hill’s funeral took place last week. There have been some fine tributes to him following a highly successful career in journalism which spanned working for CNN, starting up the Setanta Sports News channel, heading up Channel 5 News and culminating in becoming Editor of ITV News. However he cut his teeth on this newspaper 30 years ago. Two of those who worked with him, Greg Whelan and Dickie Davis, who went on to work for Sky Sports, remember him fondly. Here they write about their former colleague and friend….

eoff arrived at the Southwark & Bermondsey News in the summer of 1990 hungry to be a journalist and ready to start at the bottom.

He came on work experience, loved every minute of it and was heartbroken when it was over. Although the newspaper couldn’t offer him a paid job at the time, Geoff wouldn’t take no for an answer. He would be on the phone to the office for at least an hour every day just trying to stay involved. In the end the bosses simply had to take him on. His persistence had paid off - and he didn’t look back.

In the beginning it meant doing everything from pushing leaflets through doors on council estates to interviewing people on the P11 bus - about riding on the P11 bus. All without earning a penny.

He was sent to Tower Bridge Magistrates’ Court on his first day proper – and only realised on his way out that he should have been in the press box watching proceedings. Instead he’d spent all morning sitting with the relatives of the accused and finding out even more about the cases than anyone else would have. That was typical Geoff.

He quickly immersed himself in all aspects of the paper; crime stories, council politics, even Millwall news and gossip - which was never easy for a Palace fan! But Geoff was always ready to go that extra mile.

When the editor Dave Clark decided that we should develop our own photos for the paper he partitioned off a tiny corner of the office, threw Geoff a how-to-do book about photography and told him to get on with it. Geoff, as ever, learnt very quickly on the job. We had the world’s oldest camera (it’s now in the British Museum) which took dreadful photos which then had to be developed in the world’s smallest dark room. Somehow, Geoff made it work.

Back then the paper was no more than a thin A4 leaflet, selling for 20 pence in a handful of newsagents. To help to pay for the production our office also operated a news agency, South East News, which found and sold stories to newspapers and magazines. This was where Geoff really came into his own. He would find a story and have the gift of the gab to sell it to the broadsheets, tabloids and

trade press alike. The likes of Construction News, Care Weekly and Horse & Hound had never seen so many stories cross their news desk from a single source. And the staff bonuses we received when he regularly broke the weekly sales record made him particularly popular in the pub on a Friday night.

Geoff never shirked a challenge. When one of the tabloids ran a story that a south London woman consumed two whole bags of sugar daily he had to try to find her. Unfortunately she had a really common surname. Undaunted, he reached for the phone directory. Having precious little else to go on he spent the next few hours asking every woman he spoke to by that name whether she ate two bags of sugar every day!

Geoff famously turned up at a pub near a crime scene minutes after the incident, trying to find a vantage point to see over the police cordon. The landlord had already punched the bloke from The Sun who’d tried to do the same thing. But he welcomed Geoff with open arms when he found out he was from the Southwark & Bermondsey News.

He got a great angle from the pub to get a great photo… but alas the good ol’ camera let him down.

Bermondsey loved Geoff and Geoff loved Bermondsey. The fondness which he had for the area - and the paper - never left him. Years after he’d moved on our old boss Dave Clark died suddenly.

Geoff returned to ensure that the paper still went out on time. By helping to keep the Southwark & Bermondsey News going through the very toughest of times he was always fiercely proud that he could give something back to an area he loved so much.

Former MP for the area Simon Hughes also wanted to pay tribute to Geoff Hill. He writes….

F

or family and so many friends and colleagues the death of Geoff Hill at the tragically young age of 52 is an irreplaceable loss of a south London star.

Geoff was one of those young journalists starting their careers who was taken on by the late great founder of ‘Southwark News’ Dave Clark.

I was privileged as the local MP to get to know Geoff well then - and to see from the beginning his hugely energetic commitment, determination and intelligence and great journalistic skill.

Geoff combined the Irish charm inherited from his mother with the south London savvy of his Croydon and south-east London upbringing and schooling (only once interrupted by a move to the other side of the Thames). And however ruthless his chase for his story, there was always his unforgettable friendliness and his smile.

Geoff was one of many ‘Bermondsey News’ or ‘Southwark News’ journalists who learnt his trade with us, and then rose to great heights in his profession. And Geoff went to the very top - not just as an Editor of UK ITN news, but as a much loved,

greatly respected and enormously successful editor of this flagship national programme too. Only leukaemia, which he worked so hard to overcome and campaigned to cure, prevented many more years of success and influence for Geoff at the very top of UK broadcasting.

Last week some of us were privileged to be able to support Geoff’s family and close friends and colleagues at the most beautiful funeral and thanksgiving service which filled every seat in St Bride’s in Fleet Street, the journalists’ church.

The pictures of Geoff, the words, music, readings, tributes and prayers brought smiles and laughter

but so many tears. The reception later in his beloved Greenwich later saw many of the best known names in broadcasting and other press continue to pay tribute and support Geoff’s family and each other.

I hope that soon the story of the huge contribution of ‘Bermondsey News’ and ‘Southwark News’ to regional and national written and broadcast journalism will be written.

In the meantime, we must continue to support our great and independent local paper - and in Geoff’s memory make sure this paper he served so well continues to thrive and grow.

Men expected to die twelve years earlier in Peckham than in Dulwich Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk People are expected to die over a decade earlier in some parts of Southwark than others and the gap may be widening, new figures suggest.

Men living in the area around Queen's Road Peckham have an average life expectancy of about 75 years, around twelve years lower than Herne Hill and Dulwich Park, researchers have found.

Women in the Queen's Road Peckham area have an average life expectancy of just under 80, nearly ten years lower than their counterparts in Herne Hill and Dulwich Park, and about nine years below women in the areas around Denmark Hill, North Dulwich and Sydenham Hill.

The contrast with some of the wealthiest parts of London is even more pronounced. One part of Kensington and Chelsea has life expectancy for men of about 95 - 20 years higher than Queen's Road Peckham's male average life expectancy.

This inequality could be getting worse.

Road Peckham was 74, meaning there was an improvement of just 1.5 per cent over the decade. By contrast in Herne Hill and Dulwich Park life expectancy grew from about 83 to nearly 87 from 20102019 - an improvement of 4.6 per cent.

For women in the Denmark Hill area (which researchers call Camberwell South) life expectancy grew by more than 4 per cent over the same period. For women in the Queen's Road Peckham area life expectancy rose by just 1.1 per cent.

Researchers say the differences are the result of lack of secure employment, cuts to social and welfare support and local government funding. They want the national government to boost investments in public health in places with lower life expectancy.

Life expectancy generally increased for both men and women in most parts of Southwark. This is normal outside war time and major disease outbreaks.

The only people now expected to live less long are women in two parts of Bermondsey that researchers called Bermondsey East and Bermondsey North. Bermondsey East, around the Tube station, has seen life expectancy for women drop from around 86 to about 83,

a fall of nearly 3 per cent. In Bermondsey North, towards Tower Bridge, life expectancy for women also fell by about 0.1 per cent.

The study, published in top scientific journal the Lancet, looks at life expectancy in nearly 6,800 areas across the country up to 2019 - before Covid-19 struck. Researchers looked at all death records between 2002 and 2019 to work out the average age at which people die in specific areas.

The study was the first that looked at life expectancy in such fine detail, examining much smaller areas than is usual for research of this type.

The average life expectancy for men in 2019 is 79, according to the Office for National Statistics. For women this figure rises to about 83.

Perhaps unsurprisingly figures analysed by the News show that there were areas of Southwark that were well above this average, as well as parts that were considerably below. This applied to both men and women - but men appeared to be more likely to be below the national average, according to this study.

For men, Bermondsey, parts of south Bermondsey, parts of Camberwell and Peckham, Walworth and the St George's

area to the north-west of Elephant and Castle were all below the national average life expectancy in 2019.

Women in the western part of Bermondsey towards London Bridge and parts of Peckham and Camberwell had lower life expectancy than the national average in the same year.

Both men and women in parts of Dulwich, Herne Hill and Sydenham, as well as Rotherhithe and the southern part of Borough towards Elephant and Castle had life expectancies considerably above the average for the UK as a whole in 2019.

The study found that the areas with the lowest life expectancy in the whole country were northern cities and towns like Leeds, Manchester and Blackpool,

which reached as low as about 68 for men.

Researchers were funded by the Wellcome Trust, Imperial College London, the Medical Research Council, Health Data Research UK and the National Institute of Health Research.

Lead author Professor Ezzati from London's Imperial College said: “The postCOVID ‘Build Back Better’ agenda can create an opportunity for better health, but it currently does not focus on equity and the resources allocated to ‘levelling up’ agenda are too little to address these concerning trends. To level up health, the government must make significant investments in people, communities and health services."

Jailed for exposing himself on trains

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Archaeologists working on a building site in Bankside have discovered an entire Roman building buried deep underground.

The four-room building, fully uncovered as part of construction works for a new mixed-use block on the Southwark Street site, is thought to date from AD72, about 25 years after the Romans founded the city of Londinium. where the City of London is now.

The building, which may contain a courtyard, was surrounded by formal gardens. Staff from the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA) have found large amounts of painted plaster, some of which has intricate paintings of flowers.

Archaeologists have also found mosaic

and terrazzo-style floors.

The find, which began last month and is ongoing, has also turned up coins, jewellery, oyster shells, pottery, copper bowls and a gaming counter - which appears to have been lost when it fell in the gap between the floor and the wall, museum staff said.

Staff are not certain what the building was, but think it could have been some kind of hotel for upper-class Romans.

A phallic-shaped pendant found at the site could also suggest that high-ranking members of the Roman military were staying there, as this symbol is often associated with the army.

It could also have been a private home of a wealthy person or family. The building, which stood for about 150 years, could also have had several uses over its lifespan. The northern part of the building

was first uncovered in the 1980s.

MOLA senior project manager Derek Seeley said: “The quality of materials found at this site suggests that this building was occupied by only highranking members of society. It is rare that we are able to investigate such a large area in central London. It provides a fascinating window into the living conditions and lifestyle of elites residing in Roman Britain.”

The objects discovered will be cleaned and taken to the MOLA archive. Some are likely to be put on display in public museums in future.

The find was made as part of the preparation work for a new residential, office and retail building on the site, which is currently empty. Planning permission was given in 2020 and building work is set to finish in 2024.

Tajinder Sabherwal, 40, was found guilty of seven counts of outraging public decency, and one count of assault against an emergency service worker, between 2016 and 2021 at stations and on trains. He was sentenced to eighteen months in prison.

Inner London Crown Court heard how Sabherwal, from Bedford, would change clothes halfway through journeys to commit another offence while trying to avoid suspicion.

Sabherwal was arrested on April 3 this year after a woman reported that he sat opposite her on an empty carriage on a train travelling from London Bridge and began touching himself while looking at her.

After she challenged Sabherwal, an off-duty officer took him off the train. After arresting him, officers found Sabherwal was carrying several items of clothing, including different outfits and hats that matched CCTV from previous incidents.

It came after Sabherwal touched himself in front of a female off-duty police officer on a train travelling to London Bridge in January. She told him she had called 999. He got off the train and she followed him - before he violently shoved her

away and ran off.

Investigating officer in the case, Detective Constable Olivia Hill, said: “Sabherwal’s odious actions were evidently pre-meditated and for his own sexual gratification.

“These incidents will have had a serious impact on the victims’ lives, and we believe no one should be subject to such vile behaviour on the railway.

“I’m pleased to see he’ll have plenty of time to reflect on this in prison.

“I would urge anyone who witnesses or experiences sexual harassment on the railway to report it to us – no report is too small or insignificant and we will always take you seriously. Text us on 61016 or call 0800 40 50 40. In an emergency, always dial 999.”

A charity in Camberwell is calling for more help to stop young people from being exploited after identifying key groups of children who are more likely to fall through the gaps.

St Giles SOS Project, which offers direct intensive help for young people caught up in criminal exploitation, shared some stories of the young people they work with. These include Theo, who had been exploited to carry weapons and drugs by a gang.

Now 15, Theo is taking part in his first professional boxing match after working closely with his St Giles caseworker.

“I feel comfortable speaking to my caseworker, which I didn’t think would happen,” said Theo. “I can tell them anything and know that they will support me to do my best and have my back.

“They have helped me believe in myself.”

Theo’s story is one among hundreds

for the charity, which has recently reached its 15th anniversary and in 2021 helped 1,704 children and young people who were vulnerable to child criminal exploitation.

St Giles’ frontline workers have now identified emerging problems with they fear will become more and more entrenched in society if they are not dealt with soon.

Their key requests include: • More support for criminally exploited girls and young women - particularly those who are coming to hospitals with injuries and evidence of selfharming.

• Specialist mental health support services to address PTSD and other mental health needs experienced by young people who have been caught up in criminal exploitation.

• Increased youth support services for young people from disadvantaged communities who are disproportionately affected by the

fallout of the pandemic.

• More help for parents and caregivers affected by child criminal exploitation, and recognition that they can be the best support structure that a young person can get.

The charity estimates each young person is given over 200 hours of intense support to help them to remain safe.

The St Giles SOS project was founded

by Junior Smart in 2006 and was one of the first organisations to spot when young people were being exploited through county lines.

Junior said: “We invest hours of effort in our young people. We know that change for our young people is not easy. It takes many, many hours and resources to create just the spark in someone for them to realise that an exit from their lifestyle is possible.

They then need ongoing and intensive support to ensure they don’t slip back into old habits."

Bermondsey nurse’s photographs of ‘horror story’ Covid-19 frontline going on display

A Bermondsey nurse's photographs of her time on the "horror story" frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic are going on display at the London Photo Show in Southwark.

Hannah Deller is a nurse at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington. When Covid hit she transformed her paediatric ward into an adult coronavirus ward, specialising in end-of-life care.

Photography-trained Hannah decided to start taking pictures of the scenes around her - both in the hospital and on the street - as a way of coping with the stress of dealing with levels of death she had never seen before.

She said: “I remember one day I was walking down the corridor and there in the doorway to ICU was one of my colleagues looking out of the window.

It was a one-way system, and he was actually stuck at the door, dressed in full PPE. It looked like a scene from a scary movie.

“I love taking photos, it’s a huge passion of mine. I trained as a photographer in New York, and now I mainly do it in and around my other passion - nursing.

“I just looked, and I was like, wow, that's a really good shot. I felt like I needed to take that picture. So, I asked his permission and he said, ‘yes, of course’. That was my first photograph.”

After that she carried on taking photos of the strange things she saw

around her. She added: “Looking back, I think the way I dealt with the stress was to take photographs.

“Right at the beginning, when we all started putting on PPE it was almost like dress up. It was really odd. I remember thinking ‘wow’, this is just bizarre. I think that’s why there are so many shots of me and the other doctors and nurses in PPE, it was a way of helping me to process what was going on around me.

“I started to take photos not just on the wards but on my way home too, I remember seeing some swings in a park that had been cordoned off, they looked as if a huge spider had come and wrapped them in webs. It was a surreal time.”

As for many NHS staff working every day with patients who were very sick with Covid-19, the pandemic has been a time of huge stress and anxiety for Hannah.

“It was a very difficult time emotionally,” she said. “We changed our children’s ICU and ward into Adult Covid Units overnight, and we were plunged straight into a kind of horror story.

“Patients started to be admitted to the ward the same evening, one after another, a lot of whom were, sadly, palliative patients. I’d never experienced this level of sickness and death before and at times it was completely overwhelming.

“Aside from coping mentally, there were huge challenges for us as

nurses. Relatives weren’t allowed to see the patients at that time and one of the most difficult things was talking to the families of the patients on Facetime and trying to reassure them that their loved ones were getting the best care possible."

Hannah said that her photography allowed her to capture some of the uplifting moments she experienced during the crisis.

“It sounds odd to say, but in contrast to the moments of extreme sadness and despair, there were some amazing experiences. Lots of people made it through and were sent home.

Lots of people did survive. Lots of families were eventually allowed back to see their loved ones.

“It was deeply sad and terrifying but with truly, beautiful moments - they were experiences that you just can't really ever imagine having in your lifetime. I’m so grateful I was able to take photos to help me remember this time."

Hannah's photos are going on display at the London Photo Show at the Bargehouse Gallery in the Oxo Tower Wharf on the South Bank, from November 11-14 2021. Entrance is free and no tickets are needed.

The London Photo Show combines works by amateur and professional photographers. This year photos from across the pandemic will go on display.

The Nest to go into schools A young people's mental health service based in Peckham is expanding into schools across Southwark.

Free service The Nest, based in their drop-in centre on Rye Lane, offer support packages to students, families and teachers, funded by Southwark Council and delivered by Groundwork London.

The theme for this years’ World Mental Health Day on October 10 was ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World.’

The Nest reflects this in the diversity of their service, with two in three of their referrals being for young Black and minority ethnic people since it launched in May last year.

The Nest’s service includes workshops, resource packs, summer programmes and webinars to raise awareness of mental health, help children as they undergo school transitions, and support young people at risk of or who have already been excluded from school.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “We know the wellbeing and mental health of a young person supports positive outcomes in all areas of life, from behaviour at school to performance at work.

“This World Mental Health Day is all about tackling the inequalities that have an impact on mental health.

“Now, through our Youth New Deal, we are further investing in early support by taking dedicated mental health practitioners directly into schools as we move towards educational recovery and bridging the attainment gap.”

As part of the Youth New Deal, the council has approved £200,000 to take The Nest’s service straight into schools.

Amid a record number of entries, The Nest was shortlisted in the Children’s Services category of the 2021 LGC Awards. The awards ceremony, which celebrates excellence in local government, will take place on 4 November 2021 when the winners will be announced.

Earlier this year, the council also approved £2m in funding and launched a dedicated task force responsible for working closely with schools to improve mental health and resilience in schools.

the PEARLY ‘NANNY AND BABY’ WALK

The Pearly King and Queen of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe dressed up as a baby and her nanny to travel about 60 miles to Brighton last week for their homeless veterans charity.

Jimmy Jukes MBE and Michelle Thorpe have raised more than £400 online for their charity UK Homes 4 Heroes and are still counting up the cash they collected en route. They are also waiting for a donation from Sainsbury's. All in all, they expect to raise about £1,000.

Michelle dressed up as a baby and was pushed by their charity's ambassador and veteran Carl Newbold from Rotherhithe, through London and down to Brighton on October 14-15.

Jimmy was her nanny, driving the support van.

"It was hilarious," Michelle said. "People kept stopping us and saying 'what’s going on?'"

In Worthing, a seaside town in West Sussex, one woman came up to Michelle and called her an

angel, before giving her a pair of silver angel wings worth £70.

Michelle said she and Jimmy had had a great time but that she was feeling a bit unwell after being out in the cold for so long.

Carl, the only one of the three to walk all the way to Brighton is "absolutely fine", other than a few blisters on his feet, she said.

Unpaid carers lighting up peckham library

A huge hand-drawn animation will be projected onto Peckham Library on Friday and Saturday this week to celebrate millions of unpaid carers.

In a collaboration between artist Leo Jamelli and University of Exeter academics, Dr Siobhan O’Dwyer and Dr Catriona McKenzie, Spotlight on Care will take place in both London and Exeter.

The huge number of unpaid carers in the UK save the government £132 billion a year, and their role became even more difficult during lockdown as support services closed across the country.

The animation will be projected from 6:15 pm until 10:15 pm on Friday and Saturday.

Dr O’Dwyer said: “Unpaid carers are

the invisible scaffolding holding up the NHS and social care in the UK. “Despite this, they have been largely ignored in discussions about, and responses to, the pandemic.”

Leo Jamelli explained that his artwork inspired by a Peckham-based unpaid carer.

The London animation is inspired by Pauline, who grew up in Peckham after her family came from Jamaica in the 1970s. Three of her siblings experienced mental illness and she’s cared for them throughout her adult life. Unfortunately, two recently passed away. Pauline’s story is a powerful reminder that many carers are caring for more than one family member.

“The artwork will show Pauline supporting one person, but the face will

change to reflect the different people she’s cared for.”

Pauline added: “I've been caring for my siblings for years and lost one of them to Covid-19 last year. The heartbreak is indescribable. Carers silently go through the challenges of caring for loved ones and, at times, you’re at breaking point.

I want to be part of this because I hope the art will capture my family’s story and bring hope and comfort to carers all over England.”

daytime knees up for older people at bermondsey boozer Ian Parker, the keyboardist of British rock band the Hollies, is playing at Bermondsey pub the Ancient Foresters next Tuesday, October 26.

The Hollies formed in 1962 and have kept playing and recording across the intervening 59 years, albeit with some line-up changes. Mr Parker is one of the more 'recent' additions, having joined the band in 1991.

He has also played with other famous artists like Joan Armatrading, the Three Degrees, the Drifters and Chuck Berry.

He will be playing from 3-6pm at the Southwark Park Road pub, although manager Sandra Smith said "he'll probably play on after, knowing him."

"It's an afternoon out for the pensioners," she said, although everyone is more than welcome to come along. "It'll be a nice singalong, he's very good." Sandra is also putting on a buffet.

The concert is part of Sandra's plan to put on more events targeted at the older people in the area. Last month the pub held a well-attended cream tea to help raise money for the local poppy appeal.

"It was a really good success, we had a good response," she said.

Andressa Santos was jailed last Thursday, October 14, for four and a half years at Southwark Crown Court, after pleading guilty alongside her fellow drugs gang members on May 7.

Santos, 25, and three other female drivers, wore courier uniforms to blend in and also used distinctive pink backpacks, each with a ‘team’ number written on (1, 2, 3 and 4), and a different coloured wallet inside with the driver’s name on.

The court heard how the gang dealt Class A drugs including cocaine, MDMA and crystal meth.

drugs, four counts of Conspiracy to supply Class B drugs and Conspiracy to possess or acquire proceeds of criminal property.

The drivers were arrested at an address on Cromwell Road in Kensington in February with large amounts of drugs labelled and lined up to be delivered.

The gang leader Tiago Thomaz DeLima, 31, was controlling operations using the encrypted messaging service Encrochat. Police raided his home and a storage unit and found more large quantities of drugs.

Across the three locations officers found £2m worth of stock including 4kg of cocaine, 8kg of MDMA, 7kg of methamphetamine, 3kg of amphetamine, 1kg of chloromethcathione and 18kg of Cannabis. Also seized was 2,493 doses of LSD, multiple bags of Magic Mushrooms, sacks of cannabis sweets, prescriptions drugs, and £54,000 cash.

De-Lima received an eighteen-year

sentence. The other drivers were jailed for between four and a half and six years. The group's bookkeeper is due to be sentenced in November.

DC James Hughes from the Specialist Crime Unit said: “We know that violence we see in London’s streets is inextricably linked to drugs such as the ones that De-Lima and his colleagues were distributing across London. The meticulous investigative work carried out by my team which unravelled this case of highly organised criminals demonstrates the detective capabilities of the Met and shows our commitment to taking these controlled substances off London’s streets.

“We hope that today’s result sends a clear message to those involved in illicit activities that the Met does not welcome this kind of enterprise in London, and our Specialist Crime Units will work determinedly to dismantle organised crime groups such as this.”

New footage released to mark HMS Belfast 50th anniversary

Windrush monument coming to Waterloo

By Charles Harrison charles@southwarknews.co.uk Jamaican sculptor Basil Watson has been chosen to make the monument to the Windrush generation of Caribbean migrants at Waterloo station.

The design submitted by Mr Watson, whose parents moved to the UK from the Caribbean in the 1950s, is of a man, woman and child, dressed in their “Sunday best” and climbing a mountain of suitcases hand-in-hand.

The government said the sculpture would be a "testament to those who landed in Britain to help rebuild the country, as well as to lay a foundation for their families and their future".

Mr Watson, who lived in the UK for part of his childhood, will finish his sculpture by June 22, 2022.

Basil Watson said: "I’m truly honoured to be chosen to design this monument from an outstanding field of applicants.

"I feel privileged that I now have this opportunity to express the aspirations, vision and courage of my parents, who took the long sea voyage to England in 1952 as part of that Windrush generation in search of a brighter future.

"I look forward to bringing my design

to life, because I know how much this means to the Windrush community."

The project was backed by £1m in government funding. Some sixteen sculptors were longlisted, with this then whittled down to a shortlist of four.

Members of the public were consulted on the four final designs, with a special focus on the Caribbean community in the UK. Chair of the Windrush Commemoration Committee, Baroness Floella Benjamin DBE, said: "I am thrilled to be able to reveal the final design of our National Windrush Monument, which so vividly captures the experiences of the Windrush generation and their descendants across the country.

"It was empowering to see how Basil’s design deeply and emotionally effected so many - adults and children alike.

"This Windrush Monument represents the past, present and future and I hope it will be the catalyst for other monuments commemorating the extraordinary contribution of the Windrush generation to this country."

Plans for a monument to the ‘Windrush generation’ – named after the ship that carried some of the new arrivals in 1948 – were announced by then-Prime Minister Theresa May in 2019.

May announced the monument in the wake of the Windrush scandal in 2018, when an investigation found that dozens of Caribbean people who had come to the UK after the Second World War had been deported or denied vital medical treatment and legal rights by the British government in recent years.

A 2020 review found that the Home Office had displayed “thoughtlessness and ignorance” in its treatment of these people. Many of those affected by the scandal have still not got the compensation they were told they were eligible for.

Some campaigners think the Windrush Monument is inappropriate because of its location and an alleged lack of consultation with the UK’s Caribbean community.

The Windrush Foundation, an organisation set up in 1997 to celebrate the contribution of Caribbean immigrants to the UK, said the monument should be in Brixton, where many of the community first settled.

Co-founder Arthur Torrington added that his group was not consulted about the monument. The government said organisers spoke to “over 250 international and British cultural leaders, curators and leaders in the Caribbean community”.

HMS Belfast is a light cruiser that saw action in the Second World War, including on D-Day and in the Arctic convoys to the Soviet Union, as well as in the Korean War in the 1950s.

Launched in 1938, HMS Belfast was destined to be scrapped in 1971 before its former captain, Rear Admiral Sir Morgan Morgan-Giles MP stepped in to save it. The MP convinced the British government to turn Belfast over to a trust he formed to manage the ship.

The trust then arranged for Belfast to be moved from Portsmouth to the Pool of London, between Tower Bridge and London Bridge, where it is today.

Crowds lined the Thames to watch Belfast arrive at its current home in October 1971.

Ron Yardley, who served on HMS Belfast during the Korean War as a telegraphist, recalled the ship arriving in London: “I saw the Belfast when she arrived home again to the Pool of London and I thought, at that time, a very big part of my life had come back again.”

The ship is now a museum run by the Imperial War Museum (IWM). As part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, HMS Belfast has had new displays, stories from crew members and new, interactive experiences since reopening this summer.

As well as the newly-digitised footage, the IWM collection also includes documents from the early establishment of the HMS Belfast trust, showing the alterations to the geography of the Thames that were considered in order to add Belfast to the city’s skyline. "For half a century, Belfast has been interpreted and presented to bring its ship’s company to life, restoring them individually and collectively, to the places where they fought, worked and lived. The new displays unveiled in summer 2021 are the latest iteration of this, ensuring that the spirit of HMS Belfast will live on for generations.

"It was with immense foresight that Captain Morgan-Giles and the HMS Belfast Trust set about saving the ship for the public to enjoy and we at IWM are dedicated to safeguarding this great survivor, and the stories of all those who served onboard, for many years to come.”

Comment My weekly surgeries are particularly important for my residents

ast Friday morning I held my normal weekly surgery for residents in my constituency of Dulwich and West Norwood.

It was good to be back in person after holding so many surgeries online during the Covid-19 lockdowns and I spoke with residents about a wide range of local and national issues.

My weekly surgeries are a particularly important way for residents to get in touch with me who don’t have access to email or have particularly complex situations to discuss.

That same day I was shocked to hear that David Amess, the MP for Southend West in Essex, had been attacked at his own surgery in Leigh-on-Sea and later, devastated to hear the sickening confirmation that despite the best efforts of the emergency services, he had died at the scene from his injuries.

Family of six risks losing home after being hit with £85,000 cladding bill

MP for Dulwich & West Norwood constituency MP, and he was murdered serving his constituents by being available to them, offering his help. I know that everyone’s thoughts are with David’s family and friends and with the residents of Southend West where he had been the MP for almost 25 years, as they grieve his loss.

This senseless loss of life brought back to me the raw emotions that I felt when my friend Jo Cox was killed just five years ago; the deep pain of the family of 16-year-old Damarie Roye who was stabbed in July, and whose funeral I attended last week; and of every family in my constituency who has lost a loved one to a senseless act of brutal violence.

Two MPs have been murdered in five years, and it is right and important that there is a review of the security of MPs and other elected representatives including councillors and Assembly Members and the staff who work with us. But it is also vital

that we hold on to the close contact between our elected representatives and the communities we serve, which is such a precious aspect of our democracy and community life.

To do that, we must tackle the hate and division in our society which drive people to violence, including the social media platforms which allow hatred, abuse and threats of violence to proliferate under cover of anonymity.

We urgently need meaningful action to tackle online hate, which can so easily spill over into real life bloodshed.

We must take sensible precautions to stay as safe as possible, but I also believe with all my heart that we honour the memory of Jo Cox and David Amess best by finding ways to continue to do the things which bring our communities together, break down our differences and actively demonstrate that, in the words of Jo Cox, ‘we have more in common than the things that divide us’.

t the beginning of October, the Tory government cut the Universal Credit allowance by £20 a week.

This means that an unemployed single person now has to get by on £59 per week - an amount even the Prime Minster himself refuses to say is enough to get by on. Yet six million people in Britain today have to – and nearly half of those are people who are in work.

Let’s be clear what this means. There are 3.5 million children across the UK who live in households where their income has been cut by over £1,000 a year in one stroke. The Citizen’s Advice Bureau argues that almost two million people claiming Universal Credit are going to be pushed into debt by this cut.

The government will tell you that the £20 payment was an additional, and temporary, measure during the pandemic. However, we all know the pandemic is not over, and its continuing enormous economic impacts are seen and felt all around us. More than 800,000 people were kept out of poverty by this payment and, according to Crisis, up to 100,000 households could now face eviction as they struggle to make ends meet.

This cut comes at a time when businesses continue to struggle to survive and costs of basics like food and energy have meant more people

are facing the choice between heating and eating. A recent survey of council tenants in Southwark showed that almost a fifth of those who had seen a decrease in their finances during the Covid restrictions said that they would go without food or heating to cope.

The impact is stark. More people homeless, more children struggling in school, more people tipped into ill health, more people needing help from already stretched local charities and public services. As ever, the Prime Minster will expect local councils and the NHS to pick up the pieces of his government’s short-sightedness.

At Southwark Council, we are taking a very different approach. We have more than trebled our emergency support budget for people struggling to make ends meet to £2.1m, and changed our policy to ensure that more help is available, more quickly. We have also backed local charities that are supporting those struggling to get by with an extra £1.6 million of funding through our Community Support Alliance. However, we urgently need a government that is backing our community too.

This is not the first time Southwark has had to raise a red flag to government.

We have published three consecutive reports showing how Universal Credit is pushing renters into arrears with growing, unpayable debts. As Campaign group Generation Renet have pointed

out, half of private renters who are entitled to housing benefits don’t receive enough to cover their rent, meaning they have to top it up – and so have even less of that £59 for food each week.

After a decade of government cuts to local councils –and where successive Conservative and Liberal Democrat governments have cut funding to Southwark by two thirds - local councils can’t turn the tide on this rising poverty alone. During the pandemic in Southwark we have stretched our resources as far as they could possibly go. As an example, we’re working with local charities through our Community Support Alliance to make 73,000 vital contacts with vulnerable residents and deliver over 27,000 food parcels, but food parcels are not a long term answer to the epidemic of poverty in Britain today.

When you combine the failure of Universal Credit with rocketing energy bills, ever-increasing London rents, stagnating wages and the benefit cap, the government has created a perfect storm where poverty could spiral in a way it hasn’t for decades. We need Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak to turn away from the brink, think again and give local communities the tools we need to help those who are in desperate need.

As a Labour council we will keep backing our community. The question is will the government?

What a shame. To go from being free to just short of £8 an hour at weekends & after 4pm weekdays and £5 at other times will potentially price out those who need access to courts the most. They have been vital in lockdown. Neighbouring boroughs may well charge more but it’s a pity Southwark hasn’t stuck to its guns.

It could have led in making a positive difference to the health and wellbeing of its communities, as well as constructively tap into the Emma Raducanu-effect. This just looks like a money-making exercise.

Tennis is for everyone, whatever age, wherever you’re from. It shouldn’t be just for those who can afford it. At least cut the fees in half. Thankfully kids can play for free - but it should be for an hour not half an hour.

Shocking life inequality laid bare

T

he difference between how long a man can expect to live in Peckham and Dulwich is a stark twelve years. That’s over a decade shaved off in about two and a half miles.

A ground-breaking new study looked at average deaths in regional groups of just 8,000 people across the country before the pandemic. Southwark was by no means the worst - Queen’s Road Peckham’s average life expectancy for men was 75, compared to 68 for Blackpool.

But the figures show that staggering inequality persists in our borough, despite the best efforts of all the different charities, community groups and the council. More than that, it might be getting worse, with life expectancies for more deprived areas rising slower over the past decade than richer places.

The researchers say there are all sorts of reasons for this, including a lack of jobs, and cuts to social support. And with cuts to universal credit, energy price rises and inflation all set to bite as winter sets in, sadly it doesn’t seem that the life expectancy gap is going to close soon.

MP risks are a threat to democracy

P Neil Coyle’s move to appointment only surgeries is completely justifiable in the light of the threats he has received in the past and the murder of his parliamentary colleague Sir David Amess.

Democracy is at stake - all constituents have a right to speak and seek the help of the elected representative, but it goes without saying that no one in any job, especially one that is a public service deserves to be threatened.

It is not just the killing of David Amess last Friday and Jo Cox in 2016 but since 1979 there have been five other deadly attacks against MPs. On top of that is the growing number of hate directed towards them online - all three of Southwark’s MPs have experienced serious threats. But are the public willing to accept an increase in security privately - but still out of the public purse - or in police officers deployed when resources in the Met are so overstretched?

The fact is that the threats and indeed the deaths are all too real and our MPs have all stated that they want to continue with public facing surgeries and they should be commended for that.

Here at the News we will continue to cover any changes to our MPs’ surgeries, to help local people engage with democracy.

This week saw the launch of Prince William’s Earthshot prize, which seeks to inject money and, more significantly, hope into the quest to undo our damage. Yellowfin, written by promising playwright Marek Horn, explores the question of whether we should be hopeful to the end or simply accept fate and ‘eat and drink (specifically tuna) for tomorrow we die’, Reverend Katie Kelly...

This all sounds rather worthy so I should say that the play is engaging, funny and thought provoking. It isn’t the kind of worthy theatre that secondary students might be dragged to for the purposes of moral education and giving the geography teachers an afternoon off. In fact, the sheer and relentless quantity of swearing would rule that out.

Language is the main medium of the message, if there is one. This is a play about ideas first and foremost. The set is classy and spare. A US senate committee room where a black marketeer has been summoned to answer for the whereabouts of the world’s last can of tuna, in the hope that it might contain the secret to bringing the fish back. The action is set in an imagined future where all the fish stocks have disappeared without trace and people are reduced

Peacock-like they showily and occasionally comically performed for the judge and jury.

Though the opening scene is darkly dramatic as Vole dreams he has been sentenced to hang, Lucy Bailey’s direction provides pure entertainment. Witness for the Prosecution is not social commentary or even entirely psychologically persuasive.

It’s a great night out in the perfect setting.

The chamber of the old County Hall is very much a character in the drama. The production is set to run until March but given the opportunity it could easily be another ‘Mousetrap’. A deserved long-term fixture of the London theatre scene.

More culturally aware readers will note that each character has been given the name of a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, a clever trope that brilliantly satirises their crusading elements. All are ‘woke’ to the perils of modern mores whilst simultaneously flawed in their pursuit of perfection. Under their cloaks of woke (special note to the ethnic knick-knacks in not-so-right-on Ralph’s apartment) each is actually caving in under the pressures of ‘having it all’: meaningful career, relationship, family, decent home, etc., revealing the rot of prejudice and self-deception that we try to keep tucked beneath our shells. Indeed, to emphasise the tragedy and controversy of the Slave contract is to underplay the playful humour and snappy wit that Ms. Parks conjures up, which this wonderful cast are readily able to celebrate as they switch seamlessly from deep cultural insights to comedic bursts of warm humanity. Director Polly Findlay’s production perfectly brings out the lively Shakespearian elements that sees the complexity of the couples’ intertwined relationships broken up by soliloquies, and even a song and dance number, making full use of Lizzie Clachan’s innovative set.

Parks is a powerful voice for our time, most recently she wrote the screenplay for The People vs. Billie Holiday. The fact that she studied under that great force of humanity James Baldwin shines through

The central question seems to be whether science and rationalism can somehow come to a last minute, cliff edge rescue or people are simply beyond saving and destined to repeat the cycle of destruction regardless of their ability to bring fish back to the oceans. As a woman of the cloth, I couldn’t help noticing that the play contained an extravagant number of uses of the name ‘Jesus Christ’ as an expletive and at the same time asked questions that were religious in nature. What is the destiny of humankind, brilliant and irredeemably flawed? Can we be saved?

When I saw the production’s title I assumed that tuna might be a jumping off point to explore environmental issues. I was not expecting that it would be the subject of the whole play, and not even all tuna but a single can, the fate of which forms the dramatic and grotesquely comical climax. Fortunately, the ideas ranged further than the subject matter and the questions asked of us have the potential to keep expanding our mental horizons.

Rage against the white noise

People as property is key to Parks’ play. Leo, played with conviction and warmth by Ken Nwosu, was once a successful artist, a man who always tried to do the right thing: ‘All my life I’ve done everything right, but somehow everything ain’t alright’. Leo finds himself driven to face his insomniac demons by a constant disorientating white noise now brought to a crescendo by a recent physical assault at the hands of the cops.

Perhaps Parks was hinting at Jean Michel Basquiat’s 1983 painting ‘Defacement’ about his friend and fellow artist Michael Stewart, beaten to death by New York City Transit Police. But you really don’t have to go back that far to find the source of her inspiration.

Leo’s shocking reaction to circumstance is to draw up a contract in which his best friend Ralph (James Corrigan) agrees to buy him as a slave. This paradoxical bid for freedom is an attempt to wrestle back control from the insecurities of being an unprotected black man in a society that seeks to subjugate and silence. You don’t have to live in a city long to realise that property is considered more valuable than the lives it contains, especially if you are non-white. Their respective girlfriends, Dawn (Helena Wilson) a white civil rights lawyer, and Misha (Faith

her work. It was Baldwin who wrote, ‘Not everything can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced’. As Misha says throughout White Noise, ‘Stay woke and go for broke!’

So Pulitzer Prize-winning Ms Lori Parks is right on the nail when she says ‘Colonialism! Hey, England, nobody does it better!’ Her play is like the prodigal child coming home, saying, ‘Hi, I’m home. Don’t you recognise me?’ And what a prodigal this is. Parks made one big change to the English version of this play; the American version reached its dramatic conclusion in a bowling alley whereas for the English version Parks ramped up the action to a gun range - a much more fitting location for the rage of a homecoming prodigal child of colonialism.

A perfect courtroom drama where the grand setting of the Council Chamber, rescued from dust and desertion for this play, provides everyone with a sense of inclusion and a good seat. There is an option to take this a step further and be part of the jury for the night, which looked rather fun.

The defendant on trial is one Leonard Vole. A young man, down on his luck, who is the last person to have seen an elderly, rich, lady friend and benefactor, alive.

When the woman is found murdered, by her housekeeper, it obviously doesn’t look good for Vole. The housekeeper makes her suspicions extremely plain in her fantastic, just the right side of comic performance in the dock.

Even with all the evidence stacked against him, Joe McNamara as Vole, manages to be hapless, naive and charming enough to sow a seed of doubt. He succeeds in getting the audience and his legal team, at least tentatively, on his side.

All hinges on the testimony of his wife Romaine, who is played wonderfully by Emer McDaid. She is magnificently arch from the moment she enters the spotlight and continues to wrong foot everyone until almost the end. There were also

Helene at work at Bletchley Park (far left of the photo) Helene Aldwinckle (whose first name rhymed with ‘keen’) played a key role in defeating the Nazis in the Second World War through her work as a codebreaker - but wasn’t allowed to tell anyone for decades after the war ended, writes Kit Heren...

Helene went on to work as a broadcaster, translator and school teacher, and managed an art gallery. She and her husband settled in Dulwich in 1979 and lived in the area for decades.

She died in April 2020 aged 99.

Helene was born in Aberdeen and studied languages at the city’s university, where she was recruited by the Foreign Office as a codebreaker in 1942.

Her first interview was in London, which was the furthest south she had ever been. She had no idea of the job’s importance or what it entailed.

Flustered after a bad night’s sleep in London, she accidentally left her handbag behind in the restaurant where she had lunch before the interview, but luckily a kind doorman at the Foreign Office called to arrange for it to be held for her until she could pick it up on her way home.

In the interview itself she was questioned by at least twenty men. Her son Richard said in his family history

that she had been told to make a good first impression - so “she sat down with a straight back, carefully removed the strap from her shoulder carrying her gas mask and placed it on the floor and, as she had been told to do, removed her gloves finger by finger.”

Most of the questions were about maths, crosswords, and languages, Helene said. Asked if she had previous work experience, she told the men she had only picked raspberries in the school holidays - which led to a discussion among the interviewers about the merits of Scottish raspberries.

Another interview followed in Aberdeen, and Helene was soon told to pack her bags to start her new job as a permanent Foreign Office civil servant.

Charmingly, or perhaps patronisingly, the Foreign Office also sent her parents a card to tell them she would be well taken care of.

Civil servants met her at Bletchley station in Buckinghamshire and bundled her in the back of a car before driving her to Bletchley Park - the home of the government’s codebreaking work.

Helene was immediately put to work analysing the codes Germany used to keep its messages and orders secret.

The aim of the work was to decipher the complex code to help Britain and the

Allies understand what Germany was doing and gain an upper hand in the war.

The code changed every day - meaning work began anew each morning.

In 1943 Helene was given a new job - training the Americans who had arrived at Bletchley Park as part of an agreement between the British and US governments. At first the British were nervous that the Americans might give the game away.

Helene said she loved having the Americans there and that they were keen to learn.

“They were full of banter and used to flirt at every opportunity, e.g. trying to accompany me to lunch,” Richard wrote in his history. “But it was always in good jest. They were enormous fun, a breath of fresh air in a rather stuffy environment.”

After the training programme ended Helene was moved to the Quiet Room, a part of Bletchley Park where analysts looked at more complex sections of code that needed more time to decipher.

Before she even moved to Bletchley Park, Helene had met and begun a relationship with her future husband John, who by this point was a navigator in the RAF. They were engaged in 1943.

But even though they wrote to each other almost daily, neither was allowed to tell the other anything about what

they were doing.

They married after the war was over, but in those days married women weren’t allowed to serve in the Foreign Office so she had to leave. Richard said that his mother was not too disappointed to resign her post.

John got a job with British Intelligence and the family - which by this point included four children - moved to West Germany. John was part of a network of agents whose aim was to stop West Germany being overrun by the Soviet Union.

She was not content to be a stayat-home mother and worked as a broadcaster for English- and Germanlanguage radio while the family was away. The family moved between England, France, Italy and Belgium over the next two decades with John’s postings, and Helene continued to work.

She was a teacher at a school near Huntingdon for two terms in 1966 and also translated two large art books from German to English. One was on the avant-garde Russian artist El Lissitzky and both were successes.

Helene and John moved to Dulwich in 1979. By this time she had moved into the art world, first as a sales assistant at the Medici Gallery in 1974. She was soon promoted to assistant manager, and in 1979 became manager. As well

as her work putting on exhibitions, she devoted herself to encouraging and supporting young artists. Helene retired in 1986 to spend more time with John, who had also retired by this point.

They lived together in Dulwich for nearly twenty more years before John’s Alzheimer’s sadly meant he had to be looked after in a care home. He died in 2012. Helene continued to live in the area and moved to a care home herself in 2014 after developing dementia. She died on April 24, 2020.

Helene’s work was kept secret until 1974, nearly 30 years after the end of the war, when the story of Bletchley Park was published. In later years she was formally recognised by both the British and the French governments for her vital work in helping win the war.

France awarded her the Legion d’honneur, the country’s highest honour, in 2019. Gordon Brown sent her and all other living Bletchley Park veterans a letter with a badge in 2009.

Theresa May also thanked Helene for her service in her final Prime Minister’s Questions.

Bees B prove too strong for the Fish

Dom Jefferies put his side in front in the first half before Tristan Crama scored his first goal for the club after the break.

As expected, the Bees controlled most of the game and could have gone ahead in the second minute when Joe Adams almost played in Wraynel Hercules.

Fisher’s Isaac Thompson provided the hosts’ first opportunity when he got in behind the defence to cross but Nathan Shepperd gathered.

Brentford went ahead in the 22nd minute when Val Adedokun raced down the left wing and sent in a dangerous cross which was deflected to Jefferies who fired first-time low into the bottom right-hand corner from just outside the box.

Fisher forced Shepperd to rush off his line as he collided with striker Christian Udo but claimed the ball.

Brentford almost made it 2-0 from a corner as Crama rose to head against the post before a follow-up effort from a Bees trialist was held by Fish goalkeeper Dan Carpanini.

Courtney Swaby tried to restore parity on 65 minutes when the ball fell to him after a goalmouth scramble but he shot over.

Crama got his goal, after another set-piece, when he finished via a deflection.

Fisher lacked end product late on and it was Brentford who almost scored a third but Carpanini denied Hercules.

New signing Milly Penfold made an instant impact when she drew a foul in the penalty area and Maisie Joyce coolly finished from twelve yards 23 minutes in.

The Lionesses doubled their lead seven minutes later as Charlotte Lynch found Chloe Burr and she drove home at the near post as the visitors continued their dominance.

The hosts halved the deficit with just over 20 minutes left but Millwall controlled the rest of the game to claim three points.

Wheeler’s side started in confident fashion with Burr at the heart of most of the attacking play. She had efforts on goal and set up Lucy Bolitho who just failed to reach the ball before the away stopper.

Burr then supplied a corner for

Emily Stanley whose header was wellsaved.

An opener always looked like it was on the way for Millwall and after Penfold was fouled Joyce placed the penalty into the bottom corner.

Burr then got the goal her performance deserved a half an hour in as Millwall gained complete control.

Joyce almost picked out Bolitho with a free-kick but the forward couldn’t connect with a header.

Having defended well all game the away side then found themselves under some pressure as they conceded.

Hamlet goalkeeper Mia North then produced an heroic spell, making a number of brilliant saves before getting injured in a collision in the box as the game was stopped for five minutes while she received treatment. Despite clearly struggling, she bravely continued with no substitute goalkeeper on the bench.

Dulwich then threatened through Sarah Walters’ free-kick before Brit Saylor’s run towards goal was stopped

by Ashford defender Ellen Clarabut, who also denied Sarah Milner.

The visitors’ Ashley Cheatley was next to go close but her attempt went past the far post.

Down had another effort from a freekick but North saved.

The Hamlet took the lead at the end of an action-packed half when Asia Harbour Brown took advantage of a ricochet to drive the ball home.

North and Walters continued to tenaciously deny the table-toppers and help their side reach half-time with the lead.

Dulwich adopted a more defensive approach after the break with Chana Hinds cutting off supply routes in midfield and North rescuing her side again after a goalmouth scramble.

After holding out until the 67th

minute, another rebound led to the second goal of the game and Ashford’s equaliser, as Anya Kinnane took advantage of the ball coming back off the post to head home.

Substitute Saskia Philp tried to restore Dulwich’s lead but her shot went wide.

Another substitute, Hannah Baptiste, had come on to help bolster the midfield, before Philp ran on to the ball but rolled her effort just past the near post.

The result leaves Dulwich seventh in the London & South East Women’s Regional Football League Premier Division table, but they have played

Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL LIONESSES recorded a fourth win on the bounce and two victories in two under new manager Jack Wheeler after defeating Denham 2-1 away in their London & South East Region Women’s Football League clash last Sunday.

But it never really looked like they would be denied their third league win of the season, a third in a row.

Millwall are sixth out of eleven teams in the table after six games, two points ahead of Dulwich Hamlet and only behind Worthing and Fulham above them on goal difference.

It’s FA Cup action for the Lionesses this weekend. They face Fleet Town Ladies in third round qualifying this Sunday (October 24). The winners of the tie will reach the first round proper.

Kick off at St Paul’s in Rotherhithe is 2pm.

Dulwich Hamlet halt Ashford steam train

Ashford continued like the steam train they have been this season early on, captain Alissa Down firing wide as Dulwich struggled to get into their stride and to retain possession.

By Alex Grace at The Den sport@southwarknews.co.uk IT WAS the highest attendance at The Den this season last Saturday, but by 5pm it was probably the lowest the home fans had felt.

Harry Cornick scored a goal in each half to end Millwall’s seven-match unbeaten league run and earn Luton a first win over their rivals since 2005

and a first victory at The Den since 1999.

There was little for Lions fans to cheer about as Nathen Jones’s side came and did a clinical job.

The only real moment of hope for the home supporters in the 14,227 attendance came when Gary Rowett’s side were awarded a penalty with six minutes left. But in keeping with the theme of the afternoon, the normally reliable Jed Wallace had his spot-kick saved by Simon Sluga.

Millwall had started decently enough and tested Sluga in the ninth minute.

Wallace was played in behind the Luton defence by George Saville, but the Lions’ top-scorer was forced wide, and his eventual shot was tame and easy for Sluga to hold.

Two minutes later and against the

run of play, the visitors struck their opener. In trying to head clear Jake Cooper could only manage to nod the ball infield. Jordan Clark seized on it and evaded Shaun Hutchinson’s tackle before finding Cornick arriving from the left and into lots of space in the box, and he fired past Bartosz Bialkowski into the top-right corner.

The Lions nearly found a way back into the contest before the break after a goalmouth scramble. Benik Afobe’s effort from Danny McNamara’s cross was blocked before Murray Wallace’s follow-up deflected into the path Cooper, but he was denied by a packed and stubborn Hatters defence.

Rowett’s men were made to rue that early in the second half as Cornick got his and Luton’s second. The Lions defence seemed to be practising social

distancing as they allowed Cornick space coming in from the right this time to drill low past Bialkowski into the bottom-left corner.

It could have been 3-0 moments later when Pelly Ruddock-Mpanzu’s stunning 25-yard effort cannoned back off the crossbar.

Millwall supporters finally had hope in the 84th minute when Kal Naismith handled in the box, but Sluga guessed correctly to dive to his right and palm away Wallace’s penalty.

It was individual defensive lapses that cost the Lions dearly, the usually organised and solid back five caught out and made to pay by the clinical Cornick.

The boos at full-time were understandable. Lions fans – or at least most of them as there were hasty exits after Wallace’s miss – had sat through

Youngsters strike late to seal points Millwall celebrate their dramatic comeback

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL UNDER-23s came from a goal down with just six minutes left to defeat Swansea City in their Professional Development League game at their training ground on Tuesday afternoon.

The Swans took the lead in the first half and held that advantage until the 84th minute, but a goal from Tyrese Briscoe and a brace from Jayden Davis ensured the Lions claimed the points and maintained their 100 per cent home record this season.

Swansea were much brighter early on with Daniel Williams and Dylan Morgan trying shots from distance.

Jaden Forrester had the ball in the net in the thirteenth minute but it was ruled out for offside.

Millwall responded to be a threat and Seb Drozd forced Nico Hansen into a save but the Welsh side then took the lead as Dylan Morgan found Lincoln Mcfayden who fired into the bottomright corner.

Mcfayden then went close to a second but his shot hit the woodwork.

Lions boss Kevin Nugent brought on Alfie Allen for Chin Okoli at half-time and then attacker Abdul Abdulmalik for Sean O’Brien with 22 minutes left.

Briscoe tested Hansen with a longrange effort, while Scott Butler almost made it 2-0 late on, but his header from a corner went just wide of the post.

Millwall finally made the breakthrough when Briscoe arrived to get on the end of a low cross and he finished via the post.

With the game looking like it would end all square, Davis made it 2-1 in the

90 minutes watching their side create little.

Millwall have relied on Wallace to drag them out of trouble so many times, but even he proved he is human as Sluga prevented him from getting his side back into the contest.

The hosts had few complaints about the result.

Olaofe is studying for a Business Management degree at The Open University and as well as his online classes his studies take up 20 hours a week.

The degree was scheduled over six years – he’s in his third – but because he took two extra credits he has shaved a year off.

Despite being just 21, Olaofe says he wants to show younger generations it’s possible to have a career in football and a degree.

Olaofe – who is on a season loan at Sutton United – isn’t the only Millwall player working towards various qualifications. Matt Smith is on the Master of Business Administration course at Manchester Metropolitan University, while club skipper Alex Pearce is completing his coaching badges.

Olaofe went to Wilmington Grammar School in Dartford and says he always liked “numbers and maths”.

He was encouraged to pursue that alongside football by his parents and two older brothers, and then Millwall helped facilitate his studies.

Olaofe’s other interests include anime, the Japanese animated TV shows and films, and he adds that “for relaxation I’ll go to the gym, do a bit of a cool-down on the bike. When I’m back home I’ll watch something on Netflix.”

Thinking of gym and bike work as “relaxation” is indicative of Olaofe’s drive.

Asked if his course is a good way to switch off from football, he says: “It is.” But he adds: “Even though it’s quite hard because I’ll always want to have the football on in the background. Yesterday [Sunday], for example, I told myself I’d do work but there was literally football on for the whole day!

“I love football, I love watching it, so if there’s any sort of game on I’ll watch it.

“I’m studying part-time so when I get home I have time to do a bit of work.

“The module that I’m doing this year is economics. I’m just broadening my knowledge, really. There’s nothing in particular [he wants to specialise in yet] but I like numbers and I like maths.

“I was always decent in school so after I finished, through the help of Millwall and the education manager, they said, ‘you’re a clever lad, keep on top of it’.

“I also had help from my parents.

It was mainly my parents and my brothers who guided me, making sure I kept topping up.

“It’s always good to see a professional footballer with a degree.

Wilfred Ndidi is also studying [Business and Management at the De Montfort University] at Leicester.

“I want to show younger generations that you can be a professional footballer and you can have a degree as well.

“As long as you put your heart and mind to it and you’re always focused then anything’s possible.

Olaofe is balancing all of that with what has so far been a whirlwind start to the season.

He scored his first Football League goal last Saturday, the winner against a Crawley side with former Millwall club captain Tony Craig in the centre of defence.

“It was a great feeling, it’s been a long time coming,” Olaofe says. “Once

I scored it was just like a relief. It was a massive win as well to get three points in a local derby.”

Four days earlier, he scored his first goal of the season as Michael Gray’s U’s stunned a strong Portsmouth side 2-0 at Fratton Park in the EFL Trophy.

The way Olaofe speaks about that evening shows a player living his boyhood dream. He agrees that it was perhaps the best experience of his career so far.

“Oh, most definitely. I remember stepping out onto the pitch and it

was honestly like a carpet, it was beautiful,” he says.

“Even the stadium, I don’t know how big the screen is but it’s massive, the lights, the whole stadium, it was beautiful.

“Even though it was the EFL Trophy I feel like, as a striker, it’s always good to score goals whatever competition it’s in. It’s always a confidencebooster.

“Portsmouth are a very good team as well. It was good to be able to score against a team like Portsmouth.”

Olaofe probably would have got off the mark sooner in his debut season in the Football League but for a hip flexor injury in pre-season and then a reoccurrence of the same problem delaying his return to the side he scored fourteen goals for last season.

“You know football, injuries are always unlucky and it was just unfortunate how that injury came about,” he says.

“But this is the sport I signed up for, things like this happen. It’s part of a learning curve, it’s part of a footballing journey.

“To be fair, my initial reaction after hearing the scan results, I was honestly devastated. I remember walking into my mum’s room and telling her. I was upset.

“Considering the season I had last

season, I was looking forward to trying to impress [in pre-season] and see if I had the next level in my locker.

“Millwall and Sutton arranged for me to go back. I finished off my rehab at Millwall and once I was declared fit I went back to Sutton.

“Sutton remained very patient with me because it was three weeks after the transfer window had closed that I went back to them.

“It was massive thanks to the manager who has a lot of trust in me and he was willing to take that risk knowing I wasn’t fully fit to have me back on loan.

“Before the injury, for this season anyway, I was thinking about just trying to break through and gain as much experience as I could, whether that was at Millwall or a League One team or League Two team. Just trying to pick up from where I left off last season.”

Whatever happens this season, Olaofe is part of a Sutton side that is making history with their first campaign in the Football League.

“As a kid I feel like you always grow up wanting to be a part of history.

Already getting that promotion into the Football League, knowing that all of us, the team, the squad, will go down in history, is quite a surreal feeling.”

sport@southwarknews.co.uk THERE AREN’T many better dance partners than Jake Cooper and the away end in stoppage-time of a Championship fixture at Bramall Lane.

Cooper probably thought he’d never top his 95th-minute equaliser against Sheffield United in this stadium in April 2019, but he went one better on Tuesday night.

For the second time this season, Cooper scored late to give Millwall a 2-1 league win. It sparked delirium among the visiting players on the pitch that was matched by those in the stand who had made the long midweek trip to South Yorkshire.

It was always going to take something special to upstage Jed Wallace’s amazing strike against the Blades, but Cooper just about managed it in the most dramatic fashion with his stunning last-gasp winner.

Wallace scored arguably the greatest goal of his career to put Gary Rowett’s men ahead – a stunning, dipping crossshot which flew into the top corner – in the eleventh minute.

Billy Sharp’s penalty levelled matters for Sheffield United on the stroke of half-time before Morgan Gibbs-White saw red for a second booking early in the second half.

Chances came and went for both sides but in the 92nd minute Cooper rifled home a brilliant left-foot piledriver from 25 yards to seal victory for Millwall in front of their raucous away support.

The few hundred Lions fans who had made the trip north made their presence felt moments before kickoff by chanting as the Blades’ famous ‘Greasy chip butty’ anthem was played over the tannoy.

Bramall Lane can be an intimidating venue under the lights, but Rowett did

not look fazed in the slightest.

Nor did his players, who took the game to their hosts and attacked with sustained cohesion from the off.

Rowett made three changes to the side which lost 2-0 at home to Luton on Saturday as Ryan Leonard and Scott Malone came in at wing-back to replace Danny McNamara and Murray Wallace, while Tom Bradshaw took Benik Afobe’s position up front.

Millwall had the ball in the Blades’ net inside the second minute when George Saville and Sheyi Ojo combined to send Wallace clear inside the left channel.

He appeared offside but the assistant referee took an eternity to raise his flag, by which time Wallace hit a shot which deflected in off Robin Olsen but was rightly chalked off.

Yet Rowett’s men continued to probe and in the eighth minute they went close again from a corner.

Malone’s left-wing delivery was cleared by Ben Davies only as far as George Evans, who rifled a low 25-yard shot wide of the left-hand post.

It was another sign of Millwall’s attacking intent but when they scored

the opening goal it was all down to the individual brilliance of Wallace.

He found himself in space inside the right-hand channel after collecting Leonard’s neat pass.

Wallace was little more than six yards in from the touchline when he showed daring and ambition to hit an incredible dipping right-foot shot which flew over Olsen’s fingertips and into the far corner.

He celebrated with a theatrical dive on the turf and his goal poured confidence into Rowett’s side as they popped the ball around with a swagger at times.

The home supporters began to vent their frustration but they had a lingering goal threat up front with veteran captain Sharp ably assisted by Gibbs-White, David McGoldrick and Ben Osborn.

In the 20th minute, Jayden Bogle hit a low right-foot shot which drew a smart stop by Bartosz Bialkowski.

In the 28th minute, Bialkowski excelled himself once again, denying McGoldrick from close range after he had been played clean through by Gibbs-White’s pinpoint through-ball.

As the Blades began to up the tempo, they were rightly denied a penalty in the 36th minute when Bogle went down all too easily under a challenge from Malone.

Referee Matthew Donohue waved away Bogle’s frivolous appeal but United were not to be denied on the stroke of half-time when John Fleck was felled by Malone as he charged into the box.

Sharp stepped up to coolly fire home to Bialkowski’s left before celebrating in front of the Millwall supporters.

Twenty-five seconds into the second half, Gibbs-White engineered the space to rifle a right-foot from the edge of the box which flew just past Bialkowski’s far post.

Slavisa Jokanovic’s men began to dominate and McGoldrick was guilty of a horrendous miss in the 53rd minute.

flank and McGoldrick inexplicably spooned the ball over the crossbar from inside the six-yard box.

Moments later, Gibbs-White was shown his second yellow card, this time for taking a tumble in the penalty box, as he was given his marching orders.

United almost forged ahead in the 79th minute when substitute Iliman Ndiaye engineered the space to hit a fierce shot which Bialkowski again did

superbly well to tip over the crossbar.

After Millwall fans had implored Rowett to make changes, chanting “Gary, Gary, make a sub”, substitute Afobe dragged a left-foot shot just wide with eight minutes remaining.

Three minutes later, another substitute, Mason Bennett, fired wide from close range but Cooper was on hand to seal the winner with a sublime left-foot strike in the second minute of added time, firing home from distance in spectacular fashion.

“You can have what looks like a potentially good run not turn out that way,” he said before the game against Luton. “And maybe a run of fixtures that looks difficult that you get more points from than you’re expected to.”

The Lions’ record against the Hatters had surely pointed to a home win. Yet Luton won for the first time at The Den since 1999. It was Millwall’s first defeat against Luton in ten games.

“A smack in the chops,” Rowett said.

This latest batch of games between international breaks looked like a prime chance for Millwall to move further towards the top six. Four games at The Den, yet when Jed Wallace missed an 84th-minute penalty against Luton the home supporters started streaming towards the exits to discuss in the Five Bells and Ancient Foresters and all the other drinking spots where it had all gone wrong.

They probably questioned how they had been such fools to be swelled with optimism after a seven-game unbeaten league run.

So supporters will perhaps approach this game with a certain sense of fatalism.

But then that’s usually when their team surprises them.

Stoke were fifth and Millwall fourteenth before the midweek games, but just five goals were the difference between those positions. The sides had conceded the same number of goals (13) but Michael O’Neill’s Potters had scored just five more, and that equated to six more points accumulated.

It shows how these teams are generally involved in tight games with one goal more often than not the difference.

Before this week, only two of Millwall’s twelve league games involved a winning margin by more than a goal, Stoke three.

It points to a closely-fought contest that will have little in it.

That’s when Millwall should be at their best, and something Rowett highlighted he wanted to see after their 2-0 defeat at home to Luton last Saturday.

“It doesn’t happen in the Championship, you have to earn it,” Rowett said. “You

have to show that little bit of grit and desire and fight for every loose ball.

“If you don’t do that, you won’t win games.”

O’Neill showed as the manager of a Northern Ireland team with limited means that he could draw very talented sides into a scrap. At this level, he has relatively more talent to compete towards the top. And Stoke have played some good football this season.

All three of Stoke’s league defeats had been away from home this season before they were beaten by Bournemouth in their own backyard on Tuesday night.

Rowett will be without Benik Afobe against his parent club. Matt Smith is likely to start as the focal point of the attack.

George Saville is suspended after picking up his fifth booking of the season against Sheffield United.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THE FUTURE of Ben Thompson at Millwall is set to come into focus yet again as the transfer window approaches – with boss Gary Rowett not ruling out a January departure for the midfielder.

Thompson, 26, has played just one minute in the Championship this season and didn’t travel to Sheffield with the first team on Tuesday, instead turning out for the under-23s at the training ground that afternoon.

He has made three other appearances, all in the EFL Cup including two starts.

Thompson has played 174 times in all

competitions for Millwall since his debut in September 2014.

This season, George Saville, George Evans, Maikel Kieftenbeld, Ryan Leonard and Billy Mitchell are all ahead of Thompson in Rowett’s midfield plans.

Thompson has recently been playing for the under-23s as a route into the first team looks unlikely at this point.

Thompson has been linked with a move back to Portsmouth in each transfer window since his successful time there in the first half of 2018-19.

Pompey were interested again in the summer but reports on the south coast said wages were a stumbling block.

“We’ve got a really strong squad this season,” Rowett said when asked about Thompson’s future. “There is lots of competition in midfield and Thommo

hasn’t had many opportunities.

“Every player should want to play regular football and Thommo is no different.”

Meanwhile, the News also asked Rowett about Mahlon Romeo, who is on a seasonlong loan at Portsmouth but has hinted he sees his time at Millwall at an end.

Rowett didn’t reveal whether he thinks Romeo will play for Millwall again.

He said: “Mahlon went out to play regular football. We’ve got Danny [McNamara] in that position and Lenny [Ryan Leonard] and Billy [Mitchell] can play there as well.

“It’s really a question for Mahlon how he perceives his situation in terms of his Millwall career.”

Gary Rowett thrilled – but opponent bitter

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT said Millwall produced their best performance of the season after Jake Cooper’s sensational injury-time strike against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Tuesday night.

Jed Wallace gave the Lions the lead in the eleventh minute with a wonder shot from wide on the right touchline that flew over Robin Olsen’s grasp and into the top corner.

Billy Sharp levelled from the penalty spot for the hosts just before half-time after Scott Malone had fouled John Fleck.

The Blades lost Morgan Gibbs-White to a second yellow card in the 54th minute.

Then, in the 92nd minute, Cooper lashed a left-footed 25-yard drive past Olsen to send the away end into raptures.

“This is always a very difficult place to come, especially when the crowd gets behind Sheffield United and lifts them,” Rowett said.

“They are a good side, quick and incisive, so we knew we would be in for a tough time.

“But I thought we deserved to win the game because that was probably the best we have played this season. We left it late, but it was a great strike by Jake.”

Meanwhile, United boss Slavisa Jokanovic felt George Saville should have been sent off for tripping Fleck, after the Lions midfielder had already been booked.

Jokanovic said: “Yes. It’s simple. We tried to ask the referee why. He said, ‘it wasn’t cynical, there was no intention and his defender was close to Fleck’.

“The defender was 20 metres behind him, his interpretation is not correct.”
