Petrol stations across Southwark ran dry or rationed supplies after mass panic buying, leaving those needing fuel for essential travel stranded.

Many desperate workers took to social media to try to find out where was still open.

One driver wrote on the East Dulwich Forum website on Monday: “My wife just filled up her car as I need it for work.

“She queued up at Asda in Old Kent Road for one-and-a-half hours and people were trying to push in.

“She said there are people marshalling but drivers arguing and fights breaking out.”

Another poster had tried Morrison’s Peckham; Walworth BP; Tesco Old Kent Road; Asda old Kent Road; and stations near Loughborough train station, East Dulwich and Crystal Palace Sainsbury’s all to no avail.

Many stations have put £35 limits on petrol to get queues moving. Over the weekend Old Kent Road was gridlocked despite Boris Johnson’s plea for people not to panic buy.

“Gridlock in Old Kent Road because a petrol tanker has arrived at the BP service station,” tweeted Catherine Whitacker on Monday.

“Cars queuing for petrol blocking multiple buses and all traffic behind. Madness. #PanicAtThePumps” Long queues and blocked roads were also reported in East Dulwich, Camberwell and Peckham, with one frustrated tweeter saying: ”The drivers seem to be completely unaware of the chaos they are causing. “They’re not even letting the buses through!”

This week it emerged the army had been put on standby to help resolve the crisis, as transport secretary Grant Shapps insisted the situation was showing 'tentative signs' of stabilising. Panic buying has exacerbated HGV driver shortages and supply chain problems blamed on Brexit and the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although many other countries have been affected, the UK has been particularly hard hit.

Meanwhile, Sadiq Khan has called for key workers to be prioritised for fuel.

“The government must reserve fuel for those who desperately need it. Designating stations for essential workers would keep our capital moving—just as it did during the 2000 fuel crisis.

“Our city needs to get moving again. These fuel delivery issues are causing congestion and leaving Londoners unable to do their jobs. “ I welcome the Army being put on standby

There were signs on Tuesday afternoon that the worst of the crisis could be over.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said "we now are starting to see the situation improve" and urged people to go about their business as normal.

The organisation that represents petrol stations said that the situation was likely to continue to get better on Wednesday.

Gordon Balmer, who leads the petrol retailers association, said in a statement on Tuesday

afternoon: "There are early signs that the crisis at pumps is ending, with more of our members reporting that they are now taking further deliveries of fuel.

“Fuel stocks remain normal at refineries and terminals, although deliveries have been reduced due to the shortage of HGV drivers.

“We have conducted a survey of our members this morning and only 37 per cent of forecourts have reported being out of fuel today.

“With regular restocks taking place, this percentage is likely to improve further over the next 24 hours.”

"It's becoming clearer by the day that Sadiq Khan's decision to abandon a custom built home for City Hall is a catastrophic mistake for London's government.

"It is hugely disappointing that the London Assembly will be temporarily homeless."

City Hall was finished in 2002 and has been occupied by the GLA ever since. The building is owned by a Kuwaiti company and the GLA pays £11m in rent each year.

The move to east London is set to save millions of pounds, according to the mayor.

A spokesperson for the mayor said: "The GLA is on track to move to The Crystal building in the Royal Docks by Christmas, saving taxpayers £61m over five years.

“As part of the relocation, the GLA will leave its current home near London Bridge on November 26. Assembly meetings scheduled for the first week of December will still take place at the current City Hall and arrangements will be put in place to hold Assembly meetings due for later in the month at a suitable alternative location.”

The Greater London Assembly (GLA) meets in City Hall near Tower Bridge but the lease runs out in November. Mayor Khan announced a move to the Crystal Building in the Royal Docks in east London last year as a cost-cutting measure, saying the new offices would be ready by October.

But the new offices will now not be ready until Christmas at the earliest. Business in the first week of December will still take place at City Hall but it is unclear where GLA business scheduled for the rest of the month will take place.

Susan Hall, the leader of the Conservatives in the London Assembly, said: "We warned the mayor that his plan to move to the Crystal building was halfbaked.

sixteen pies and mash in just 20 minutes

By Michael Holland news@southwarknews.co.uk Just weeks ago in the world’s oldest pie and mash shop, Max Stanford ate a staggering eighteen pies and seven portions of mash in less than an hour to set a world record for pie and mash eating. But Max is back again to take on all-comers from around the UK in a pie and mash speed eating contest. And, as the saying goes, it was no contest.

By midday on Sunday 26th September the scene was set in the legendary Manze’s with competition tables taped off and laid out with napkins, cutlery and water in readiness for a contest to see who could eat the most pies and mash in 20 minutes.

Max arrived early in a T-shirt telling the world that he is Max v Food and a ‘Competitive Eater, Food Adventurer and Fitness Fueler’. He and his entourage looked confident as they waited for his rivals to turn up.

Speaking to the News before the match, Max said the eating competitions are a hobby to raise money for charity, but which he takes very seriously so combines the contests with a healthy eating and fitness regime.

On Sunday money raised was going to Southwark Foodbank.

For today’s speed-eating contest Max had a big meal of vegetables and smoothies on Friday and fasted

for the two days leading up to the start time. In between he did weight training, lots of cycling and on the day walked to Tower Bridge Road from his Brixton home as part of his preparation.

Plates of Double-Double were placed in front of the four contestants, with standbys on an adjoining table ready to be swapped for plates as they became empty. At one o’clock the whole shop collectively counted down from 10 and the eating begun.

Max immediately used his hands for the pies and a spoon for the mash and liquor. Luke, Joe and Danny used knife and forks, which was slow, cumbersome and showed that they were just pretenders to the crown.

After five minutes cracks were already beginning to appear. The liquor was sloshing everywhere as the underdogs tried to go faster.

Luke and Joe ditched the cutlery and manually crammed meat and mash and pastry into their mouths. Danny,

with his family looking on, kept up a steady but sedate pace.

The crowd cheered every time a plate was cleared and another one took its place. Cameras flashed.

Gasps of amazement were audible.

A round of respectful applause went up as Luke, looking like a beaten man, dropped out. The first to succumb.

Joe was now concentrating on the pies and seemingly taking bigger mouthfuls than the reigning

champion, but he needed to up his pace to keep in this race. Danny plodded on, a hero to his children.

On Max Stanford’s table the empties were mounting up. Five plates, six plates, seven. ‘Three minutes left,’ declaimed the Timekeeper. Joe was losing focus - and time. Max was in the zone.

One minute left. Max was on his 8th plate. ’10, 9, 8,’ the crowd cried. ‘7, 6, 5, 4.’

South London’s Max was spooning up the last of the mash and liquor.

‘3, 2, 1.’ Cutlery hit the crockery for the last time and a big cheer and standing ovation filled the air. We had witnessed legends at lunch and it was a memorable sight.

The empty plates were counted.

Danny ate six pies and two mash.

Luke had polished off an impressive eight pies and 3.5 mash in the short time, before he could go no further.

Joe put himself on the outside of eight pies and 3.75 mash, just pipping Luke’s effort. But it was an easy contest for World Record holder Max Stanford, who ate 16 pies and mash in 20 minutes.

As the numbers were read out mouths gaped open. Everyone there were pie and mash fans and all knew their own limits, so were very aware of the feat they had seen accomplished before their very eyes in Manze’s.

Council housing boss hits back at infilling ‘misinformation’ Exclusive

The human cost of not building is enormous. I can’t sit there and look at the numbers increasing and not do something

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council’s housing boss has hit out against ‘misinformation’ she claims is peddled online about her infill plans, arguing it is her ‘moral duty’ to build more social housing as the housing list reaches 16,000.

Sitting down for an exclusive interview with the News, Cllr Stephanie Cryan, the cabinet member in charge housing, claimed: “Some of it is targeted campaigning against us and spreading misinformation about council house building, People are being told that we are building all private homes on the Flaxyard site, for example, which isn’t true.”

Although she did not give specifics, it would appear she is particularly perturbed by the Save Peckham Green campaign.

Flaxyard, colloquially known as Peckham Green, is a brownfield site that had been temporarily designated as a park for several decades after previous development stalled.

Housing is now being built on the site 96 for social rent and 20 through a shared ownership scheme. Campaigners say that during a climate emergency loss of green space is untenable; and will risk overcrowding and make an already dense area even more crowded.

Increasingly Southwark Council has found itself in hot water over its approach to building new homes. Shoehorning the majority into existing council estates means residents are effectively seeing their area built up further, potentially losing light and space, while putting up with inevitable disruption.

Against a backdrop of luxury homes springing up around the borough over the last few decades, some council tenants understandably feel they are the ones paying the price.

For Cryan, reconciling the needs of residents and those desperate for a home of their own is a difficult balancing act but she believes finding ways to build is a ‘moral imperative’. “I think in the coverage of this issue the thing that is really missing is the voice of the people who are moving into these news homes,” she argued.

“There were just under 16,000 people on the waiting list at the end of August, having grown from 15,000. It’s been exacerbated

One in 24 in Southwark are now ‘empty’, with the number no longer listed as primary residences rising by 600 per cent since lockdown, the largest seen in any London borough; as we reported in late 2020.

The News understands that next month Cryan’s colleague, Darren Merrill, will publish a new strategy for tackling the issue.

However, Cryan says while important, empty homes are not a panacea for the borough’s chronic housing shortage.

“Seventy-five per cent of empty homes in the borough are privately owned and there is very little we can do about them, we don’t have the powers to just take them over,” she told us. “We do everything

we can do, and are allowed to do, already.”

Empty homes figures are usually a ‘snapshot’ of the number at any given time, and lack insight into why they are empty and how long this is likely to last.

There are around 4,215 in the borough at the latest count considered to be ‘empty’ encompassing homes on the market for sale, being done up, or recently inherited. Some could have gaps between tenants as well as simply being left unused.

At any given point only about 1.5 per cent of the council’s 55,000-strong housing stock are void. In some cases they are properties in need of considerable modernisation.

Others are on regeneration sites and will be repopulated later. Either way, Cryan says, there is no simple fix to house all 16,000 people on the register.

Many of our readers will immediately think of Maydew House - a prime example of apparent waste. Why hasn’t it taken so long to refurbish?

“We needed to take our time to look at what we were doing in Maydew House after Grenfell and do it right,” Cryan says.

“The asbestos needed to be stripped and we are doing structural surveys at the moment. Then COVID happened and that delayed work too so it has taken longer than anticipated to refurbish it.

“We are bringing people back into homes on regeneration sites where possible. In Aylesbury we’ve had some homes done up in Brockley House and Wolverton to use as temporary accommodation, whereas it’s harder and harder to keep Taplow and Wendover up to standard so people are coming out of those homes.”

“There are a lot of things happening nationally that impact on us - the end of furlough, cuts to Universal Credit and the National Insurance hike.

“The human cost of not building is enormous. I can’t sit there and look at the numbers increasing and not do something. If we don’t do something then we are letting down every single person in housing need. I feel really strongly about this. It isn’t about a small minority of loud voices.”

Cryan is particularly keen to refute claims that consultations are a done deal, and is keen to stress that resident input is particularly important - and can yield results.

Every site has a ‘resident project group’ set up, and is the subject of an ‘intensive’ consultation process with ‘jargonfree’ documents explaining the plans and, COVID-19 permitting, face-to-face meetings and even door knocks to ensure residents are aware of what is happening.

And, in signs that the council can find common ground with residents, there are now significant amendments being made to an infill scheme at Peckham’s Bells Gardens, where the new homes on site will now be 100 per cent social rent rather than including some for private sale.

Building height will also be reduced based on residents’ feedback.

Since the first anti-infill campaign was set up by Lewis Schaffer against nowscrapped proposals to build on Nunhead’s

Priory Court, dozens of other groups have become increasingly vocal.

In some cases, they are particularly concerned about safety; none more so than when plans to build higher through ‘rooftop extensions’ - usually modular which means adding extra storeys onto tower blocks.

Because many of these plans involve prefabricated structures, built off-site and quickly assembled, the council says they are quicker, cheaper, and more environmentally sound to construct as they do not require loss of land.

But the local authority’s own surveys have highlighted the potentially prohibitive cost of the work needed to ensure that its ageing building stock has been built to modern safety standards. These invasive surveys, and any subsequent structural work required to stop the risk of disproportionate collapse, is costly.

Cryan says rooftop homes are still ‘financially viable’ but will be considered on a case-by-case basis. As we reported last week, she has committed that no risky developments would ever go ahead.

“Even if there was just a glimmer of risk we wouldn’t go ahead - the idea that we would is a fake narrative,” she reiterated.

“We have a duty as a landlord to keep people safe in their homes and that is what drives me.” *Local Labour MPs Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes have maintained their silence over the controversial infilling policy.

Requests for comment from this paper have been ignored for over a month.

£18 million on surveys alone needed to comply with new fire safety regulations The council’s history with fire safety - Lakanal and Ledbury being key examples of where it has gone terribly wrong - continues to drive its approach. It already goes above and beyond what is legally required in terms of routine fire safety work.

But the challenge of managing older buildings, many of which the local authority only took over decades after being constructed, means more problems could yet be uncovered.

One shocking case that has only just come to light is that of Marie Curie house in Sceaux Gardens, which has been discovered to have similar problems to those at Lakanal, where a blaze killed six people in 2009. Why the safety work Lakanal had didn’t take place on Marie Curie is now the subject

of an independent review, with Cryan admitting ‘I don’t know why this [the safety works] weren’t done.”

The new Building Safety Bill, currently making its way through parliament, is a huge regulatory overhaul both in the construction and management of both high-rises and buildings seen to be at particular risk. This includes those where particularly vulnerable people are housed, such as care homes or sheltered housing.

Although none of the council’s towers have cladding now, the cost of extra surveys alone on the stock covered by the new law is expected to reach a staggering £18 million, says Cryan. This covers extensive surveys in all 172 council highrises and around 70 other buildings that fall under the new legislation.

£350m pricetag as heating costs set to rise fivefold Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Annual district heating costs are set to rise fivefold in just four years to £25 million as Southwark Council grapples with its creaking district heating networks.

As we have previously reported, Tooley Street has estimated bringing heating and hot water up to scratch in a way that meets its carbon footprint targets would cost a staggering £350 million.

Now, for the first time, new council reports have shed light on the first tranches of that investment.

There are more than 100 heat networks serving 17,000 properties across the council’s overall stock of around 55,000 homes.

Although designed to keep costs low due to bulk purchasing and reduced running costs, in reality many of the networks are over 40 years old and in some cases well beyond their lifespan.

In a bid to limit problems this year the council’s main contractors, OCO and Smith

& Byford, have taken on extra staff and a third maintenance contractor has also been drafted in to boost capacity.

They have focused on increasing their stock of replacement parts, and the council has also set up a new supplier relationship for temporary boilers so these can be quickly brought in if needed to limit outage times.

The borough’s largest system, and the worst affected by major outages in 2019, was Wyndham Estate. It has since had its boilers rebuilt, gas boosters renewed and is part way through the first phase of having the underground mains replaced.

New burners have been fitted to D’Eynsford Estate’s boilers and significant work has also taken place in Brandon, and Brimington Estates, with a heating network powering what was the North Peckham Estate next on the list.

But this is a drop in the ocean compared with the extent of work needed. Council papers list a shocking 20 sites ‘of concern’.

Expenditure is forecast at £5 million in 2022-23, £15m the following year, and £25 million by 2024-5; but these figures are “dependent upon both the results

of feasibility studies and the availability of government grants to support certain elements of delivery”.

The urgency of this work has been made stark by the results of a public survey into the district heating service, which had around 800 respondents.

Around half - 53.43 per cent - said their current system was not reliable, with 84.52 per cent reporting that they had experienced outages.

More than a quarter said outages were at least monthly, with just under ten per cent saying they occurred at least once a week.

A new compensation policy was implemented after lobbying from frustrated tenants forced to splurge on expensive fan heaters, with a flat payment of £3 for a day’s outage.

Unsurprisingly Aylesbury Estate is reported to be the worst affected in the borough, followed by Brimington, Cossall, Newington and the area covered

by North Peckham district heating network.

Newington is currently having work undertaken to install new heat pumps - a greener and more reliable alternative.

Castlemead

has Winter of discontent already started?

Residents in Castlemead Estate are fearful of a ‘winter of discontent’ as their water supply is shut off for the second time this month.

Both the hot and cold water supply for the blocks off Camberwell Road had gone on Monday morning for the second time this month - the first being just a few weeks ago on September 9.

Smeaton Court, Pennack Road, Emberton, and Harding Close have also all lost their hot water at time of writing, according to the Southwark Council website. Residents have been provided with drinking water and offered a place to shower in Elephant and Castle.

John Scahill, 60, raised concerns about his mother, who is 87 and living in Castlemead.

“We’ve had to heat water up on the stove just so she can wash,” he said. “Last winter the heating went off frequently. I understand that accidents can happen, but when it’s this regular you have to wonder what the problem is. There are vulnerable people in this building who are now facing a winter

of discontent, so to speak.”

John also argued that the communication from the council had been unhelpful, saying he had emailed the council immediately on Monday morning and had yet to receive a response.

He added: “I’ve had to come to Southwark News just to be heard. There’s no point Keir Starmer in Brighton saying that the Tory government is doing this and that, when right here a Labour council is letting this happen.”

Southwark Council confirmed the basement boiler house had flooded after a temporary boiler connection blew overnight, leading to the mains water booster pumps losing power. ​This is now being fixed while longer term improvements are being assessed. A spokesperson said: “It’s been really hard for residents to deal with the water issues at Castlemead, and we apologise for the inconvenience. We’re speaking to residents to support and talk them through the next steps we need to take to ensure it doesn’t happen again.”

Two tower blocks proposed despite no bakerloo extension Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Indefinite delays to the Bakerloo Line extension haven’t fazed a London developer that wants to build two new tower blocks near the Old Kent Road.

Pocket Living has applied to Southwark Council to build up to 117 homes in a tower block that will reach a maximum of eleven floors on Ossory Road in north Peckham and 22 flats in a nine-storey building in Bermondsey’s Verney Road.

Southwark Council wants 20,000 homes to be built along and around the area of the Old Kent Road, but half of these depend on the extension of the Bakerloo Line, according to the council’s action plan.

Transport for London (TfL) aimed to build two new stations along the road by 2031 to ease public transport pressures.

But these plans have been shelved indefinitely because of TfL’s coronavirushit finances.

Thomasin Renshaw, development director at Pocket, told the News that the company’s unusual business model made public transport less of a concern.

Pocket’s buyers have to either live or work in the borough that they buy in. The developer, which got £25m in investment from London Mayor Sadiq Khan in 2017, styles itself as a company that makes home owning in London a reality, selling flats at 20 per cent below market rate to first-time buyers with an income below £90,000.

But the Ossory Road site will have 78 homes at the normal market rate and 39 at Pocket’s 20 per cent discount rate, as well as space for light industry

The developer, which has already built a nearby block in Varcoe Road, says in its application that the Ossory Road and Verney Road sites are linked and together make 50 per cent flats either for social rent or discounted sale.

Pocket tackles the issue of people buying a flat at a low price and renting it out by checking in on residents once a year. Residents can also sign up to an app that cultivates a “community atmosphere”, Ms Renshaw added.

She said that on the few occasions when someone has been flouting Pocket’s no-subletting rule, other residents had reported the issue first - but dismissed

the idea that its residents were spying on each other.

Residents in nearby buildings have raised concerns that the Ossory Road block could affect the nearby Glengall Road conservation area, while some people living near the Verney Road development are worried about the effect on their light. Ms Renshaw replied that local people have had the opportunity to comment on Pocket’s consultation and the council’s development plan for the area - and are now able to give their opinion on the applications themselves.

Dozens of people from Bermondsey and Rotherhithe gathered at the Ancient Foresters pub on Southwark Park Road on Tuesday for a tea party to raise money for the local poppy appeal.

The pub is the new home of the Royal British Legion for Bermondsey and Rotherhithe. Sandra, the landlady of the pub, told the News in July that she wants “to create a bit more of a community round here.”

As well as the food and drink at the pub, visitors to the pub’s tea party were treated to a visit from a mascot wearing a full-size poppy costume.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A service is to be held at the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe war memorial on West Lane to mark the hundredth anniversary of the monument.

The memorial on West Lane was first unveiled on October 8 1921 to commemorate the soldiers from the area who died in the First World War. Local people who died in the Second World War were later added to the monument.

The centenary service, organised for the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Royal British Legion, will go ahead on October 8 at 3pm and will feature descendants of some of those who took part in the original event, including Fergus Carr, the great-great-grandson of Arthur Carr, the Peek Freans factory owner who was instrumental in making the memorial. Fergus also designed the new 'joy slide' at St James' Church on Jamaica Road.

The service will be led by Canon Gary Jenkins, from St James' Church. As well as Mr Carr, speakers will also include local MP Neil Coyle and Southwark mayor Cllr Barrie Hargrove.

The service comes after the Grade IIlisted war memorial was vandalised in

late August, with someone setting fire to it in the middle of the night.

Police said at the time they are openminded about the motivation for the crime and that there was nothing to indicate any element of racial or cultural motivation.

Local residents reported the act of vandalism to Southwark Council. The monument was cleaned the same day by council workers.

Local people were defiant in the face of the vandalism, with members of the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Poppy Appeal laying poppies at the memorial that evening, and others also laying flowers.

The next evening dozens of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents gathered for two minutes’ silence at the West Lane war memorial.

Local people laid wreaths at the war memorial and vowed “not to let them win,” referring to the person or people who set fire to the memorial. The event was organised by Jill Merrett, who runs the local poppy appeal, and her deputies Geraldine Howard and Ken Higgins. It is still unclear who set fire to the war memorial.

The service will take place at the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe war memorial on West Lane at 3pm on Friday, October 8.

pregnant woman ‘slapped in face by two boys on e-scooters’ Exclusive

A pregnant Bermondsey woman has called for people to be wary after being slapped in the face by two teenage boys on an e-scooter on the weekend.

Cécile Bizot was walking along Credon Road near the corner with Ryder Drive in south Bermondsey on Sunday evening (September 26) when the two boys came along behind her. She turned to let them pass when she felt “a massive slap” on her face. She described them as both white and aged between thirteen and fifteen.

“I told them ‘I’m pregnant! What’s wrong with you?,’” Cécile said. “They just laughed and insulted me. If I hadn’t been pregnant I would have gone after them and taken them to their parents.”

Cécile, who is about twenty weeks pregnant, was shocked by the incident.

Luckily a kind woman walked her home and a nearby shopkeeper gave her a glass of water.

Police are looking into the incident but have not made any arrests yet.

Cécile said she appears to be fine but the attack could have been worse.

“Your balance is different when you’re pregnant. Something could have happened to the baby and that’s what I’m scared about.”

Now she wants to warn people about this kind of attack and let the boys know that this behaviour is not acceptable, even if they think it was just a prank.

“I understand it’s kids but at some point you need to take responsibility.

You don’t hit anyone in the face thinking

it’s just a normal thing to do, let alone a pregnant woman.

“People need to be aware that this happened and it could happen to them as well. I’m sure it could happen to other people, if they did it to an old lady she could fall.”

Cécile, who has lived in Bermondsey for eight years, said she did not think the incident was representative of the area as a whole. But having to endure insults or aggressive behaviour from men is all too common for women everywhere, she added.

“It’s something you get used to. I get followed sometimes, or insulted, or hit on. If I see an adult man looking a bit high or drunk I will be careful and go another way. But I was not expecting that from kids. You should never slap anyone but most of all a woman. We

should not be targets of men anyway but on top of that to be targeted by children is too much.

“I don’t want to be afraid of everyone when I go in the street.”

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “At 19:01hrs on Sunday, 26 September police received a report of an assault that had occurred in Ryder Drive, Southwark.

“It was reported that a woman in her 30s had been assaulted by two males who were travelling on an e-scooter.

The woman did not require hospital treatment.

“Officers are carrying out enquiries into the circumstances and are reviewing CCTV from the area. No arrests have been made. Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101.”

Dulwich LTNs get shake up

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Low Traffic Neighbourhoods implemented across Dulwich during the pandemic are set to be shaken up after a majority of respondents to a Southwark Council’s consultation said they wanted the schemes changed.

The proposals, based on consultation feedback, will see the parts of the Dulwich Streetspace Schemes operate with reduced timed restrictions, allow more access to a wider range of key workers, essential services and public transport, and improve signage (see image for details).

The council received 7,242 responses throughout May and July this year after implementing road changes with experimental traffic orders in 2020.

Although the results show a slim majority were in favour of the overall aims of the project, (55 per cent) a significant majority (63 per cent) of respondents would not want measures such as filters or timed closures on the roads where they live. There were also clear majorities for scrapping restrictions in particular junctions or at least changing how they are implemented.

For example, 59 per cent of respondents wanted the timed closure at the junction of Dulwich Village/Burbage Road with College Road/Gallery Road scrapped and returned to normal.

The council has also published the first detailed look at its monitoring data, which shows that the trial has decreased traffic in the area’s geographical footprint by ten per cent and increased cycling by 66 per cent compared with pre-COVID levels - a significant proportion of whom are children and parents.

But areas that have seen traffic increase the most at peak hours are East Dulwich Grove to Lordship Lane at peak hours (+ 222%,) East Dulwich Grove (West) to Townley Road at peak hours (+77 per cent) June 2021 saw an average of 17,500 fewer motor vehicle journeys across the whole area each day.

Southwark Council’s Catherine Rose, lead cabinet member for transport said: “As a council we must ensure we listen to all views, consider the data, and find balanced solutions that improve the area for all residents, now and in the future.

“I think the proposals we’ve published today do just that, allowing us to keep the considerable benefits of the temporary scheme, but improving them based on local feedback. “

E-scooters should be legalised everywhere, says thinktank

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A new report has called for e-scooters to be legalised across London, arguing that this would be safer for riders and better for the environment.

You are currently not allowed to ride e-scooters on roads, unless they are part of the Transport for London (TfL) hire trial, in which case they can be ridden through certain boroughs, including Southwark.

There have been several high-profile incidents of people being hurt in southeast London involving e-scooters, including the death of a Rotherhithe rider in July. TfL figures show that three people have died in incidents involving e-scooters on roads in 2021. Some 165,000 trips have been made since the scheme began earlier this year.

The authors of the new report, which was sponsored by two e-scooter companies and published by the Centre for London thinktank, said that the ban on using private e-scooters on roads is “often flouted”.

“Because all use of private e-scooters is illegal, it is harder to encourage safe and appropriate riding – on the road or in a cycle lane, with lights – over dangerous riding on a pavement, without lights, or at an unsafe speed.”

Rotherhithe e-scooter rider Michael Harris collapsed several weeks after breaking his leg in an alleged road collision on Long Lane in Bermondsey.

His friend, who asked not to be named, said he still wanted e-scooters banned outright despite the Centre for London’s proposal. “It’s just not a good idea, because it’s not easy to find someone responsible in a crash if you don’t have licence plates,”

he said.

“I want them banned. At the moment it’s getting too far now with all the e-scooters we’ve got on the roads.”

The Centre for London says e-scooters are part of a broader group of “micromobility” vehicles like bicycles and e-bikes that will help Londoners reduce their use of cars and cut carbon emissions.

The think tank added that cyclists are “more likely than other Londoners to be male, white, and relatively affluent.”

E-scooter users, by contrast, are probably more likely to be “ridden by a more

representative group” of Londoners: i.e. more non-white people, more women and less well-off.

As well as the death of Mr Harris after the incident in Long Lane, we have reported on several other collisions involving e-scooters that have had serious consequences.

In July, a three-year-old child suffered life-changing injuries in Myatt’s Fields Park after being ‘hit by an unidentified e-scooter rider. Previously a man was left unconscious in the road in Rotherhithe after being allegedly knocked out by an

e-scooter illegally riding on the pavement.

Elsewhere a teenager was killed in Bromley after he was ‘hit by a car’ while riding an e-scooter on July 18.

But the authors of the report said that e-scooters appear to be no more dangerous than riding a normal bike, although they cautioned that there is “little evidence” at the moment.

Josh Cottell, Centre for London’s research manager, said: “The shift to these emerging vehicles is already happening but we need the government to catch up and introduce policies which encourage safe ridership of e-scooters and e-bikes on our streets and ensures anyone who wants to use these vehicles is able to do so.

“Legalising private ownership and riding is the first step towards building a gold standard for micromobility in the UK, with Transport for London – and other equivalent authorities in towns and cities across the country given the powers to arrange shared schemes for micromobility vehicles as they emerge.”

Will Norman, the walking and cycling commissioner for TfL, said: “He said: “We recognise the opportunities presented by micromobility and through our e-scooter trial and ongoing work, we are looking at both the long-term role they could play in a green and sustainable future for the capital, as well as the role they can play in avoiding a car-led recovery from the pandemic."

Karate teacher jailed for selling fake Harry Potter and Batman DVDs

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Southwark Council led an investigation that saw a south London karate teacher jailed for selling thousands of fake DVDs and foot care products.

Stephen Anthony Clarke Gostling, was found to have been selling the fake DVDs and Scholl foot care products via 22 eBay accounts, 28 PayPal accounts and 31 bank accounts set up using more than 30 names. Southwark Council said he made more than £500,000 in sales over five years, running his business from a self-storage unit and three residential addresses.

Gostling, of Birkbeck Road, Beckenham, was sentenced to four years in jail at the Inner London Crown Court yesterday after pleading guilty to nine offences under the Fraud Act, Proceeds of Crime Act and Trade Marks Act. Mr Recorder Dawson said: “You were engaging in fraud to a significant level and only an immediate, custodial sentence is justified.”

Southwark Council’s trading standards team first identified Gostling in 2017, when they found an eBay account thought to be selling counterfeit DVDs that was registered to an address in Shand Street in Bermondsey. Gostling's use of address turned out to be a sham, but upset customers had been sending their fake DVDs back there.

Anti-piracy investigators from the Film Distributors Association bought a Batman V Superman DVD and a Harry Potter box set from Gostling as a test. When they found these to be fake, Southwark's trading standards team got Gostling's address in Penge from his bank.

Southwark Council, the police, and teams from Bromley and Croydon councils raided Gostling's four addresses in March 2018, seizing 615 fake DVDs from the self-storage unit and 633 fake Scholl Pedicure rollers. They also found 2,208 DVDs and several laptops at his home address.

Cllr Darren Merrill, Southwark's cabinet member for a safer, cleaner borough, said: “This sentence should serve as a grave warning that the Courts see DVD piracy and counterfeiting for what it is – fraud. It’s a fraud on customers and a fraud on our film industries, which makes a significant contribution to the UK economy.

“Gostling went to great lengths to disguise the fact he was making money from duping thousands of customers into buying dodgy DVDs. I am pleased that thanks to the investigative skills of our trading standards team the business was halted and any profits he made are likely be confiscated.”

A man is accused of committing sexual offences at Sydenham Hill railway station on the morning of August 24.

Penguins Raducanu and Gilbert

Sea Life London Aquarium has chosen Raducanu and Gilbert as the names for its two female Gentoo chicks, which were born earlier this year, in a 'fitting tribute' to two British heroines of recent times.

Bromley-born Emma Raducanu won the US Open at the age of just eighteen earlier this year, while Dame Sarah Gilbert was in charge of the team that

developed the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine.

Catherine Pritchard, the aquarium's general manager, said: “Now the sex of the penguin chicks has been established it is a celebratory moment for the Aquarium and we wanted to name our new females after two standout women of the past eighteen months.

“Emma Raducanu’s recent win at the US Open Championship was a massive success for British sport; and Professor Dame Sarah Gilbert has played a life saving role in the battle against the Covid 19 pandemic and therefore we felt it a fitting tribute to commemorate their successes and mark their moments in time by naming our penguin chicks after them.”

London South Bank University is the only London university to offer courses in chiropractic. The new clinic will treat up to 300 patients per year, and allow the university’s students to study in new dedicated facilities.

This comes after the British Chiropractic Association pledged to increase the number of chiropractors in the UK from 3,100 to 5,000 by 2025.

Help us get back our paddling pool A fundraising campaign is underway to save a 100-year-old paddling pool in Denmark Hill that serves as a 'lifeline' to the local community.

Campaigners want £15,000 from the public crowdfunder to help fix the pool.

Lambeth Council and other local groups and businesses are giving another £65,000.

Ruskin Park paddling pool was opened for the first time in the 1920s and was used until 2015, when it closed down

because there was no money to maintain the site.

Locals launched a successful campaign then to reopen the pool, raising £15,000.

But the pool closed again in March 2020, because of a broken water pump, followed by the start of the Covid-19 lockdown.

The pool was temporarily reopened again in July 2021, closing again in September.

Now fundraisers want to get £15,000 in donations from the public for a full refurbishment, including the introduction of more water jets, a new plant room and

equipment, repairs to the pool surface and a dedicated mains water supply.

Jim Dickson, Lambeth's cabinet member for health and adult social care, said: “This summer we’ve seen the paddling pool at its best, as a lifeline for parents and youngsters from across the community. It’s time to secure its longterm future with the full refurbishment it needs.”

She said: "In 2002, at the age of 22, I was diagnosed with what is now known as Primary Biliary Cholangitis (PBC). It was perhaps more unusual for someone my age to be diagnosed with PBC but I was lucky that my local gastroenterologist recognised the markers in my blood tests and knew who to refer me too – the Liver Unit at King’s, one of the world leaders in liver care.

"I lived with the disease, largely with only subtle symptoms, for over a decade but eventually I was put on the liver transplant list in autumn 2015. What followed were ten unsuccessful attempts to find me a suitable donor, including a pretty severe case of sepsis and organ

failure, which was only recognised because the registrar who came on shift while I was in resus in my local A&E had done a placement at King’s in the Liver Unit, and whom I credit with saving my life that day.

"But it was eleventh time lucky for me and I was successfully transplanted on 5 December 2015. I have been well ever since thanks to the care at King's.

King’s organ donation head shares harrowing story

King's College Hospital chiefs are calling for more awareness about donating organs and other tissues - which could possibly save someone's life.

Hilary Patel, the new chair of the Denmark Hill hospital's organ donation committee, needed a new liver herself and had to go through ten unsuccessful donation attempts before she had a successful transplant.

She almost died on one occasion after suffering from sepsis and organ failure, but eventually found a suitable donor .

Last week is organ donation week and Ms Patel has shared her 'exhausting and scary' journey to receiving a liver transplant.

Age UK’s celebration of life

A south London charity for the elderly held an event last week to help remember and commemorate people who have died.

Age UK held the Celebration of Life event at its Stones End Day centre in Borough.

Attendees held tributes such as writing messages on balloons and laying flowers.

An event organiser told attendees as they released their balloons: "I want you to send out that positive feeling, whatever you wanted to say but didn't get a chance to say, how you're feeling. This is a moment to express it now - as a family, as a group, as a community."

Paramedic’s bravery during terror attack

A paramedic has been given an award for his actions during the 2017 London Bridge terror attack that 'saved many lives'.

Gary Edwards was one of the first people on the scene on June 3 2017, thinking at first that he had been called to a routine road traffic collision. It soon became clear that something far worse had happened.

Gary is a tactical response unit (TRU) paramedic - which means he is specially trained to respond to terrorist attacks. He immediately treated some wounded people on the scene and took others to safety, making many trips to and from the bridge that night. Gary said he did not know at the time if the gunfire he could hear was the police or the attackers but he carried on working.

Thanks to the efforts of Gary, other emergency services workers and brave members of the public, 48 people were taken to hospital and survived. Sadly eight people died as a result of the attack.

Gary has been given the London Ambulance Service's Chief Commendation Award, awarded to those who have shown exceptional courage and bravery.

Nick Osborne, a TRU operations officer who nominated Gary for the award said: “Gary and others made countless journeys across the bridge that night, evacuating those casualties unable to walk to a safer area.

“I have no doubt that Gary’s initial quick actions, and subsequent tireless work with others at the scene, saved many lives that night, and was one of the reasons that the 48 members of the public conveyed to hospital survived.”

Former London Ambulance Service chief executive Garrett Emmerson gave Gary the award.

Garrett said: “Gary is a real credit

to the Service and his actions that night personifies the incredible professionalism and speed of our response. It is wonderful to be able to recognise him in this way.”

Gary said: “I’m so honoured to receive this award and to be recognised in this way. It was an extremely difficult and challenging incident to attend.

“I’d like to thank all my colleagues from across the emergency services who responded and worked so hard to help treat and get people to safety. I would also like to thank my colleagues who have been so supportive since that night.

“My thoughts are with everyone affected by the incident, including colleagues and members of the public who were there to see it unfold.”

KEVIN IS SET FOR 32ND MARATHON

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey man is running the London marathon for the 32nd time this year, to raise money for children with cancer.

Millwall fan Kevin Downey has run the marathon every year except two in the past 32 years - one because the Lions were playing at Wembley, and the other because he was making mailbags for the Queen.

Kevin said he started doing the charity runs after his daughter, now 34, was born six weeks premature. "Today it’s nothing to be born that early," he said. "Back then it was a big thing, she was in hospital for about six weeks."

Over the decades he has raised about £115,000 for various children's charities. "I just like to help any children’s charities in the UK," he added. Children with Cancer, the charity he is fundraising for this year, raises and invests money for specialist treatment for children.

Kevin's best time for the 26-mile run

is three hours and 45 minutes - but that was several years ago and he said he was unlikely to match that time this year.

"I'm 62 now, it's taking its toll. On the day it’s worth it though. I'm probably looking at over five hours, that's what it’s been the last few years - I haven’t even done much training yet."

This year's London marathon is on Sunday (October 4). The marathon is back after a year's break because of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. But that didn't stop Kevin last year - he ran the 26 miles 'virtually' around southeast London, with an app on his phone monitoring his route.

"I'm always looking forward to it every year," he said. "I always know that all the people who I know in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe will be out there on the route to say hello."

Janet Kelly, 58, from Beckenham, was diagnosed with secondary stage four breast cancer in May 2016 - the second time she had been diagnosed with cancer in her life since an initial diagnosis in 2003.

Now, she’s running the London Marathon to raise money for the staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital who have helped her through this incredibly difficult time.

Janet said: “When I first got the news, I thought I was going to be dead by the end of the year. After going through this once before, I started thinking the worst.

“Though I know the cancer will progress, I’ve decided I need to make the most of the time I have now.

“The care I’ve received at Guy’s has been so fantastic.

“I am absolutely in awe of the place and their staff. From the minute you walk through the door to the moment you leave, everyone is so kind.

“I’m not a runner by any stretch of the imagination, but after I saw on Facebook that you can run the marathon and raise money for Guy’s Cancer, I thought ‘Go on then, I can have a go at that’.

As reported in the News today, Guy’s and St Thomas’ did ‘better than expected’ in a study by the Care Quality Commission.

Janet is regularly monitored and treated in the Cancer Centre at Guy’s.

Following her 2016 diagnosis, she underwent targeted radiotherapy in the hospital.

While there was no evidence of cancer after the therapy, the nature of secondary cancer means it could return at any moment, and Janet still takes drugs for the condition.

She will be cheered on by Derek, her husband of more than 30 years, as well as their children Jack, 29, and Rosie, 27.

Elizabeth Chambers has worked at the donation-based Camberwell Choir School since 2008, and says she ‘wouldn’t run the marathon for anyone else.’

Last year Elizabeth ran the virtual marathon around Burgess Park in seven hours and raised £2,200 for her school - a figure she has already surpassed this year, with £2,386 donated at time of writing.

Despite being a small organisation, Camberwell Choir School has worked with over 3,500 children since it began in 1990, giving them music and drama lessons, completely relying on donations to keep going.

“The work they provide to the community is outstanding,” said Elizabeth. “It’s a fantastic place to work and I don’t mind getting up every Saturday to do it.”

Asked how she was feeling about trying to beat her time at the upcoming marathon, Elizabeth said, “well, just like last time, I’ve had an injury at the last minute - but I believe I can do it.”

starting secondary school next year?

Each year the challenge of deciding on which secondary school to apply to for your child remains one of the biggest education decisions for parents and carers...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

It is vital that you get the order of preferences right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. You may be tempted to name just one school on the online application as it is the only school you want for your child. However, there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To increase the chances of your child being offered a preferred school, we strongly advise you to list up to six preferences on their application.

There are various types of secondary schools to choose from including

academies, voluntary aided, foundation, free and independent schools. And it is here where the oversubscription criteria vary. It is important you fully understand the oversubscription criteria and match them to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for places.

Southwark Council has not published open day/evening dates in their brochure this year and you are strongly advised to check each school’s website for details on how and when they will be holding their open day/evening as this may be subject to change at short notice.

Make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2022/23 brochure and the Starting secondary school in Lambeth 2022/23 booklet, as well as other boroughs.

The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that your child might not be offered a place at that school. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

Do use all six preferences - however, you need to be wary about only choosing schools which are heavily oversubscribed. You should name your first preference school on the application, but also list preferences where your child has a realistic chance of being offered a place.

Applying for secondary schools can be emotionally difficult. It is such a vital

decision for your child’s future. If your child is in Year 6 and currently attending one of Southwark’s or Lambeth’s primary schools, you will receive further information from your child’s school.

If you are a Southwark resident you must apply online at: w w w. s o u t h w a r k . g o v. u k / schooladmissions or if you are a Lambeth resident you must apply online at www. lambeth.gov.uk/eadmissions The online application process gets rid of the paperwork and is available to use 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The site allows users to save, continue or make changes to their application, right up until the closing date and your details are safe and secure. You will receive an email with a summary of your submitted application and you can also view the outcome online. The closing date to submit the online application is 31 October 2021 by 11.59pm.

You also need to ensure that you submit a school Supplementary Information Form (SIF) to the schools you apply for that need these, to the school by their deadline. These ask for further information, such as religious observance or regarding school specialisms. Where a school requires your child to sit an admissions banding test, it is vital that they sit the test. If you are applying to a secondary school that uses banding within its criteria, your child will be required to take a test. Please contact the school directly for further details on

banding test arrangements.

If you are thinking of applying to schools that test for ability/aptitude, you must ensure that you register your child for the ability/aptitude admission test before each school’s published deadline and you must also submit your child’s online admissions application by 31 October 2021. Failure to provide a SIF to the school by their deadline and your child sitting a banding test or an ability/ aptitude test, where these are needed, may significantly reduce the chances of your child being offered a place at a school on your application.

Children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan follow a different admissions process and parents and carers must contact the Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Team within their local authority for further advice.

Once you have made your preferences and submitted your online application by the closing date, your application will be processed. If you have successfully submitted your online application before the closing date, you will be able to view the results of your application on the eAdmissions website (www.eadmissions. org.uk) during the evening of 1 March 2022. You will also be sent an email in the evening of 1 March 2022 which will contain information on what to do next.

If it was not possible to offer a place at any of your preferred schools, then the School Admissions Team will allocate

your child an alternative secondary school. This is likely to be the nearest school to your child’s home which has a vacancy. You also have the right to appeal against the decision not to offer your child a place at a preferred school. The email containing the outcome of your child’s application will include information about how to appeal.

If it has not been possible to offer a place at any schools named as a higher preference on your child’s application, your child’s name will automatically be added to the waiting lists of these schools. You may also ask for your child’s name to be added to the waiting list of any out of borough schools listed on your application. Please contact the local authority the school is located in for further information.

If your child has been offered a secondary school place, you have until 15 March 2022 to respond to this offer. For those that live in Southwark, if the School Admissions Team do not hear from you by this date, your offer will automatically be accepted and your child’s details forwarded to the allocated school. If you live in Lambeth, the School Admissions Team require all offers to be responded to, ie accepting these by 15 March 2022.

Only if you reject the offer and also provide details of any alternative arrangement you have made for your child’s education, will your child’s place be withdrawn and offered to the next child on the school’s waiting list.

What we need to do to sort out our health services

he COVID-19 vaccine means the pandemic is coming under control. But it is far from over and the government has serious work to do now, and in the months and years to come to sort out our health services.

In lockdown, we all clapped for the NHS, yet nurses are underpaid and overworked. They must increase recruitment by a major programme of grants for those undertaking nurse training. We need them and shouldn't deter good people by making them pay for their own training. Many experienced nurses are burnt out and considering leaving. Senior nurses are invaluable and we must keep them by better pay, filling vacancies so they are not overworked and proper professional recognition.

Our care services need a complete overhaul. Many end up in residential care because they can’t get the support they need at home. Carer visits of fifteen minutes are a travesty. A good service of carers, well respected and well paid, is needed to help people at home with the basics of getting up and dressed, bathing, cleaning, food shopping and preparation, sorting out medication and providing companionship.

There has, rightly, been a focus on mental health during COVID. Children unable to socialise or go to school, people unable to go to work, families separated, relatives dying, have all taken their toll on mental health.

We are fortunate to have the Maudsley’s outstanding services but the truth is that even before the pandemic there were long waiting times for those of

MP for Camberwell & Peckham all ages, whether as outpatients or in hospital. There is agreement that mental health services must no longer be the poor relation of health care. Yet that remains the case and it must change.

Kings is a pioneering hospital in so many ways and cares for many people whose health is worsened by low income and poor housing. But the waiting lists for treatment have risen and people have to spend hours in Accident and Emergency before they are seen. There are over 63,000 people on the waiting list for Kings of which nearly a quarter have been waiting longer than the 18 weeks target. The dedicated team at Kings do their best but they need more resources, and certainly not cutbacks. Covid has made this worse but there was a problem even before then.

The NHS needs more funds, but the government are wrong to raise the money by NIC increases which hit the lowest paid, including those working in the NHS and in care homes.

Poor health in Southwark compared to other areas will be worsened by of our

lower vaccination rate. High vaccination rates mean fewer people get the virus and if they do, have milder symptoms and fewer long-term effects. Of those adults offered vaccination 82 per cent across the UK have taken the jab. But in Southwark barely more than half have been vaccinated, only 58 per cent, lower even than the London average. We need the Clinical Commissioning Group, which leads on vaccination, to redouble their efforts, with government backing, to ensure we level up the Southwark vaccination rate. Low vaccination rates in our area mean more infection circulating, more people at risk of serious illness and death, more hospital admissions and more long-term illness.

For good health we need not only good health services, with people able to quickly see their GP in person, but also people being able to lead healthy lives.

You can’t do that if you’re struggling to make ends meet. So tackling income inequality is vital. But there’s no chance of that with the Conservatives. That will have to wait for a Labour government.

Bringing flowers in from the cold

A

ugust was unseasonably cool and mainly cloudy with north easterly winds, which are unusual during the summer months. September began with the same cloudy conditions and then temperatures soared for several days bringing very hot weather – and a last taste of summer.

The equinox fell on 22nd September giving days and nights of equal length - signalling the shift into autumn.

Growing conditions were challenging throughout the year; early spring was dry and warm, followed by colder temperatures then heavy rains. With such variable weather there has been a noticeable increase in plant disease; slugs, snails and vine weevils have done a great deal of damage to plants. But despite difficult growing conditions some plants have done well such as the climbing wild roses (Rosa canina), herbs; and apple crops have been prolific.

September is always a busy month – beds

and borders need tidying/clearing; spring flowering bulbs can be planted (Daffodils, Crocus, Snake’s-head fritillary). With care the summer annuals in hanging baskets should keep going until the colder weather arrives. Make sure to deadhead, remove plants past their best, feed and water.

And as the season begins to change, houseplants that have spent time outside can be brought back indoors; think about adding new plants to your collection. The Scented Pelargoniums (Geraniums) are a wonderful choice – they come in many varieties, most have highly aromatic leaves, some are particularly fragrant. The range of scents is dazzling – soft spicey, hazelnut, rose, citrus (orange and lemon) ginger, even strawberry-like. The blooms and foliage can be used to flavour drinks (always check the labels/instructions on the scented Pelargoniums to ensure they are for culinary use ). Two or three scented Pelargoniums on a sunny window ledge indoors will lift the spirits as days get shorter and winter weather arrives.

Peckham Organic at the top is not impacted the same way other shops are. And the traditional ethnic shops where the nature of how people shop, heavier bulk buy goods, rice flour, lentils, a week of fish, meat and vegetables are affected greatly.

There is no provision whatsoever for disabled consumers in the way of parking or access on side streets or safely maintained pavements and not huge obstruction of barriers and bollards.

As a local resident of 21-years, and now not as mobile as I was due to an accident few years back on wet leaves = inverted dislocation of left knee on top of arthritis, I welcome getting buses back in Rye Lane as many others in area with poor mobility or small kids in tow will do.

Geranium ‘Gemstone’ is an attractive variety; in addition to the fragrant foliage, it has two- tone pink flowers. One of the best Pelargoniums is ‘Attar of Roses’ rightly popular due to the distinctive rose-scented foliage. It also produces delicate pink flowers during summer. As well as being decorative the leaves can be added to fruit drinks or cocktails. The dried leaves can be added to pot pourri.

One other to mention is Geranium ‘Mabel Grey’; it is one of the larger varieties with striking foliage that has a sharp citrus lemon scent and attractive mauve flowers in summer. A favourite Pelargonium amongst so many choices because of its vibrant aroma. ‘Mabel Grey’ can grow into a large specimen and so needs a bit of space in a cool and light position indoors.

In the summer months scented Pelargoniums can live outside (until the end of September) in window boxes, on the balcony or in the garden; but they are tender and need to be moved indoors or to a frostfree place in winter with good light levels.

At the moment the rules and enforcement of e-scooters have resulted in a free-for-all

-scooters are everywhere it seems - even though they really shouldn’t be anywhere, or only a few places.

As we have reported several times, the only e-scooters that are allowed to be on roads

are those in the Transport for London (TfL) trial, which covers a few London boroughs including Southwark. Any scooter that is not part of this trial can only be used on private land.

But you wouldn’t know it from the sheer number of e-scooters on roads, pavements and

seemingly everything in between. A few weeks ago a teenage boy was even seen on a scooter calmly going against the flow of traffic on New Cross Road at rush hour.

As the new study we reported on this week argues, the rules about e-scooters appear to be

routinely flouted at the moment. So should we make new ones? The report by the Centre for London, which admittedly was sponsored by two e-scooter companies, argues that they should be legalised across the capital to improve safety and cut emissions.

There have been three fatal incidents involving e-scooters in London this year, according

to TfL figures. One was related to an accident in Bermondsey this summer. Other accidents include a little girl being seriously injured in Camberwell and a man being hurt in a collision in Rotherhithe. Any death or accident is tragic; but to put them in context there have been more than 165,000 trips since TfL’s trial began this year.

Or instead of making new rules, should we be enforcing current regulations more effectively?

The government put out a call to the private sector this week asking for innovative ideas to help police e-scooters that are used for illegal purposes more effectively - including bringing them to a stop safely and making stationary scooters incapable of moving off.

Whatever happens, the new rules need to be made clear to everyone who uses e-scooters and

enforced consistently and regularly - because at the moment, it feels like a free-for-all.

what’s on A Grief that never ends

With just a bed in the middle of the stage the relationship between Alex and Rupert is recreated from when they met on their commutes to work, through courtship in wine bars, moving in together and plans to make a family, which is where the heart of Cordelia O’Neill’s play, Anything Is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough, is set, writes Michael Holland...

A coffee spilt in the rush-hour crush leads to a first date, made awkward and comedic by Rupert not being able to handle this forward, straighttalking woman. As they flirt we get their backstory: Rupert adopted, Alex brought up by hippy parents, but their opposites eventually attract.

Their love begins with a whoosh of energy courtesy of Alex who playfully mocks the words he uses to replace swearing (twerp, fiddlesticks); she brings joy into their relationship by not taking life too seriously while Rupert, who works in finance, is obsessed by numbers. She is the joker to his Mr Serious, and she is in charge inasmuch as she knows how to get Rupert to come round to her way of thinking.

O’Neill’s non-stop, quick-fire dialogue is deliciously snapped out by these two who don’t miss a beat. We watch on with delight as their feelings for each other grow; we laugh at her wonderful sense of humour and how she plays Rupert with a blend of love and a twinkle in her eye. The can of Pledge scene is wickedly hilarious.

Alex becomes pregnant and the baby kicking in her belly brings more joy but, but, but, there had to be a but. The baby

boy, Edward, is stillborn and for Alex her world ends. In fact, she can’t understand why the world is still moving and life is going on. More to the point, she doesn’t understand why Rupert is against her talking to Edward and painting his nursery and buying him toys.

Rupert needs to keep some semblance of normality going in order to pay bills and get over this terrible, terrible time, but he is not helped with how Alex has responded to their personal tragedy.

She hates the world and everyone in it.

Anything Is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough is about how people deal differently with grief. For some, they do not deal with it at all but pretend nothing happened and nothing has changed. For Alex, it looked as though she was never going to get over her loss, although towards the end it looked like she might see some light at the end of her own dark tunnel.

It’s brutal, it’s grotesque, it’s irreverent, it’s pantomime, it shocks and it makes you laugh out loud. It’s The Windsors: Endgame and as childishly silly as it is you can’t ignore the fact that it provides a wonderful guilty pleasure, writes Michael Holland...

The end and beginning of love The clever part about this is that Jamie’s version is told from the beginning, from that beautiful and blissful Honeymoon period where everything in the world is good and you have a permanent smile on your face, while Cathy’s starts at the bitter end where the love has turned sour.

Cathy is ‘Still Hurting’ in the opening number until Jamie follows up with a song about finding his ‘Goddess’. And so it goes on until they meet in the middle, being showered with confetti at their wedding.

But at that crossing point it is Cathy heading towards the euphoria of those early days as Jamie’s life and relationship worsen as his writing career flourishes and takes him away from home and to literary parties that Cathy doesn’t care for.

And as we watch we experience every tear dropped as one of our own.

We empathise with every ounce of love lost. If this was a regular, linear

for them. But it does. The feelings they once had for each other turn to shreds like the confetti that once rained down on them.

Jason Robert Brown’s songs are fantastic and all hit just the right notes for each scene. While one sings of their joy or their sadness the other accompanies them on the piano and becomes a part of that emotion.

The beautiful part about this is that most of the team that twice made it such a big success at Southwark Playhouse, pre and post pandemic, are back to enjoy the glory of this West End transfer. These two actors, Molly Lynch and Oli Higginson, have taken to the West End stage like they have always been there. In front of a big band and big lights is where their talents should be, and it is wonderful to see them there.

Harry Enfield as Prince Charles fronts up a great cast of Royals, some of whom have crossed over from the Channel 4 TV show in their roles, to tell an unbelievably ridiculous tale of Charles taking the country back almost a thousand years to a society living once again in the Dark Ages, with him as absolute monarch. And as God. The Queen abdicates to give Charles a chance to reign, but he wants to hand over the sceptre to his son Will. Camilla convinces Charles not to do it and finds a clause in a document that gets him and her - more power than he could ever imagine. It does, however, mean the people become serfs, and Harry and Will have to combine forces for a revolution. The sub-plot is Beatrice and Eugenie wanting to clear their father’s name.

The caricatures are straight from Spitting Image, via the Daily Mail and a fetid sewer adjoining an all boys boarding school. They are mean, spiteful and hilarious. Kate Middleton is a ‘pikey’ who loves her high street fashions, Fergie tops up her finances making porn films, and Camilla is cast as a Cruella de Ville who seeks power more than anything else. Meghan, meanwhile, is very controlling with Harry as her lapdog, while Harry Enfield seems to have been utilised just for his name as he had very little to do.

There are some great turns in this ensemble piece. Eliza Butterworth as Eugenie almost strangles herself doing the accent she gives the young princess; Edward Cottle’s Prince Edward crops up to steal scenes; Sophie Louise Dann runs riot with her Fergie, but it is Tracy-Ann Oberman as Camilla who gets the prize here. Her song about Diana has the audience trying to peek through their fingers and put their fingers in their ears at the same time!

Of course, without the writing of Bert Tyler-Moore and George Jeffrie, who tragically died last year, this would never have happened, so hats off to them.

The Windsors: Endgame is truly absurd, but a real bundle of treasonable fun.

Could ‘the most important artist nobody’s heard of’ get a Southwark Blue Plaque?

Barbara Steveni, who lived in Peckham for more than thirty years, has been called “the most important artist nobody’s heard of ” - who “expanded the possibilities of what art could be”, writes Kit Heren...

Barbara, who died in February 2020, co-founded and ran the Artist Placement Group (APG) from the 1960s, an organisation that placed artists inside big businesses and government agencies to try and bridge the gap. It’s normal now for companies and local councils to commission art as part of their community engagement, but this wasn’t always the case.

According to archivist Victoria Lane, who interviewed Barbara, she “helped change perceptions of the role of the artist and was a precursor to the public art programmes and artist-inresidence schemes we know now”.

Barbara later ran a similar project in Southwark schools. Between 1989 and 1995 she placed fifteen artists in schools in the borough and carried out other performances in Southwark, including at Tate Modern.

Barbara was born in 1928 in Iran, where her father worked for the Foreign Office. She went to school in Devon before getting a place at the

Chelsea College of Art. There she met the artist John Latham, whom she would later marry.

They lived in Notting Hill from the 1960s and began exploring conceptual art - including taking part in a series of events called the Destruction in Art Symposium with artists like Yoko Ono, which aimed “to focus attention on the element of destruction” in art and society.

Barbara’s own work shifted from more traditional painting and drawing to events and ‘assemblages’ - putting together objects that she found.

Perhaps her most important contribution to art was to come from this world. She told British Library interviewer Melanie Roberts in 1998 that in the mid-1960s several artist friends were staying with her and wanted scrap metal for an exhibition.

“I took them to an industrial site just outside London and collected some scrap for them… as stuff for their show,” she said. Later she got lost on an industrial estate at about 10pm.

“There was this huge, enormous industrial complex, humming away.

There was a Mars factory and a clock factory… I thought to myself ‘instead of picking up buckets of plastic and material, why aren’t we actually associated with this world that we

don’t seem to be touching?

“I came back with this idea in my head that… artists needed to be in this whole other area.”

The APG was founded in 1966 with help from Sir Robert Adeane, a businessman and former trustee of the Tate, who helped set her up with contacts in some of the biggest companies operating in the UK. Once an artist was placed in a business or government organisation, they had three months to come up with a proposal for their work with the group, in a placement that would last at least a year. The work of the APG was coordinated by Barbara, her husband John and others in a committee called the Think Tank.

Among the projects that artists placed with the APG took part in was a “reminiscence aid” programme produced by the Department of Health to help the health and mental state of elderly people and people losing their memories by playing them recordings of sounds from their youth. Dementia charities run similar ‘reminiscence’ projects today.

APG held an exhibition in 1971 at the Hayward Gallery on the South Bank called Art + Economics. According to the Tate, which bought APG’s archive in 2004, the exhibition contained

a selection of documentation from the APG’s industrial placements, displayed as works of art, and “interviews [were] set up between industrialists and artists to question the new role of the artist in society.”

Barbara split up with John in the 1980s and they both moved to Peckham, living in separate houses.

Their daughter Xenia Latham told the News that they were still “very much working together every day… they were doing their own things but cared about each other still.”

Barbara had an unusual way of working out whether a person coming to the door of her Peckham home was someone she might like to see, according to an article on her website written by Gareth Bell-Jones.

“When arriving at Barbara’s home, a close friend would know not to knock but rather tug a rope hanging by the doorframe,” writes Mr Bell-Jones, who runs John’s former Peckham home, now a museum.

“Once pulled, it rattled a collection of oyster shells and Barbara would know she had a friendly guest.”

Barbara and the other members of the APG renamed the group Organisation + Imagination (O+I) in 1989 after a disagreement with the Arts Council. According to Ms Lane,

“the Arts Council had taken the idea of artists’ placements without the rigorous conceptual basis of the APG’s own approach”.

It came seventeen years after the Arts Council withdrew funding from the APG, believing that its activities were ‘more concerned with social engineering than straight art’, according to a letter sent to Barbara.

O+I eventually closed down in 2008 but its work lives on through the near-constant presence of art as a method of community engagement.

An offshoot was set up in 2016 by artists including Barbara and Mr Bell-Jones.

Barbara continued working and carried on living in Anstey Road in Peckham for the rest of her life.

She became a mainstay of the local community. “The neighbours were all very fond of her and she was always out and about seeing people,” Xenia said.

“She loved Peckham Pulse, Peckhamplex. She really liked Dulwich Village, she very much enjoyed going there to the park.”

Rikki Clarke makes farewell cameo as records set Rikki Clarke has played his last game for Surrey

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk OLLIE POPE hit a career-best 274 and Hashim Amla 163 as Surrey’s run-drunk LV= Insurance County Championship division two match against Glamorgan at the Kia Oval ended in its expected high-scoring draw last weekend.

Surrey finished on 722 for 4 declared, their highest first-class total against Glamorgan, who themselves made 672 for 6 declared in their own first innings, and a number of batting records were set as a total of 1,394 runs scored and only a mere ten wickets lost over the four days, none of them to seam.

There was also a farewell cameo of 12 not out from Surrey’s veteran allrounder Rikki Clarke, 40 next week, who was given a lovely guard of honour

by Glamorgan’s applauding team when he walked out to bat.

On an ultra-placid pitch offering neither pace, bounce, seam movement nor any appreciable spin, Pope and Amla took their third wicket partnership to 362 – Surrey’s highest for that wicket against Glamorgan in first-class cricket – before the great South African was caught off Kiran Carlson having completed the 55th red-ball hundred of his career.

Amla had resumed on 87, in Surrey’s

overnight 387 for 2, and after batting through the day’s first session the Testclass pair even had the county’s third wicket record stand of 413 in their sights as the total moved relentlessly past 600.

That was not to be, leaving Darren Bicknell and David Ward’s record from 1990 intact, but Pope was soon past his previous career-best of 251 while Ben Foakes replaced Amla at the crease and settled in for a lengthy stay in his first senior innings since late May, following a serious hamstring injury.

For wicketkeeper-batsman Foakes, indeed, it was an important knock of 53 not out ahead of what he hopes is selection for this winter’s Ashes tour of Australia, if it is given the go-ahead in the coming weeks.

Glamorgan employed 11 bowlers in all, with Carlson – called up as bowler number 10 by skipper Chris Cooke – impressing with his off breaks and deserving the scalp of Amla, who faced 306 balls and struck 14 fours in a near seven-hour stay.

Cooke himself took off his keeper’s gear to take the third new ball with Carlson, with opening bowler Michael Hogan putting on the pads and gauntlets. Cooke had never before bowled in first-class cricket.

Pope’s innings, meanwhile, became the highest individual first-class score

for Surrey against Glamorgan when he eclipsed Andy Sandham’s 248 not out in 1928, and very soon he also went past Durham batsman David Bedingham’s 257 to post the highest championship score of this season.

On the stroke of tea, though, he skipped out to try to hit Hamish Rutherford’s occasional left-arm spin out of the ground and was bowled to give the New Zealand batsman a distinguished maiden first-class wicket.

Pope, who as a result of this innings again averages above 100 in first-class matches at the Oval, batted for six hours and 11 minutes, facing 345 balls and hitting a six and 35 fours.

Earlier, Pope – who began the day on 95 – went to his 12th first-class ton with a five, courtesy of four overthrows as he called Amla for a sharp single, and he waltzed past 150 by taking three successive fours off Andrew Salter, the last of the sequence a perfectly-executed reverse sweep against the suffering off spinner, who finished with the chastening figures of 0 for 180 but certainly did not bowl badly in such pitiless conditions.

Pope later drove Callum Taylor’s off spin over long off for six and one of a steady stream of fours came courtesy of an extraordinary reverse paddle against Joe Cooke’s medium pace.

Despite Pope’s strokeplay, it took Surrey almost two overs more to reach 672 than the 177 in which Glamorgan built their own huge total although, on an otherwise meaningless day in terms of the result, they at least had the satisfaction of getting 50 runs past it before hands were shaken in the late afternoon sunshine, as Clarke led all the players off to more applause from around the ground.

Pope, who was captaining Surrey for the first time in this game, said: “When we were bowling 177 overs and getting only six wickets I began to think I wasn’t being very good at leading the side! But it was a pretty lifeless pitch and everyone put in a lot of hard yards out there.

“It would have been nice to get to 300 but if I was going to do it I wanted to do it in style and unfortunately I missed one and was bowled trying to hit a big shot. The nature of the wicket meant it wasn’t the most challenging of conditions to bat on, but I always enjoy batting with Hashim, and playing on this type of pitch does mean you have to challenge yourself to stay switched on for as long as you can.

“Hashim is a very calming influence when you bat with him and we also have a lot of fun. He gives advice if he sees even the smallest thing in your game that needs attention. It’s good

that he tells you those things.

“It was a great honour for me to captain Surrey in this match and it was good to be able to send Rikki Clarke off into retirement in that manner, with both sides acknowledging what he has done in cricket. He started at Surrey as a nine-year-old, although he did spend some time away from the club in the middle of his career, and it’s great for younger lads like myself to see the pride he has in representing Surrey.”

Glamorgan head coach Matthew Maynard added: “I had a chat with [Surrey head coach] Vikram Solanki and he said they would have done the same, because you think the wicket is going to deteriorate so you try to bat once to give yourself a chance.

“It didn’t break up though Callum Taylor got a few to go and looked our most threatening off-spinner, though it was very hard with no wicket for a seamer in the four days on both sides.

“The groundsman is trying to produce a wicket that will offer help and will deteriorate. Lee [Fortis] has made some belting wickets but you need some X-factor bowling with reverse swing or mystery spin.

“Michael Hogan was the best seamer in the game, beat the bat more than any other seamer and showed his enduring class so I’m glad he’s with us again next year.”

Early goals seal win in Essex

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ALEX YEE added to his sensational success this year by claiming the men’s Super League Triathlon title for 2021 with victory in Malibu last Saturday.

Lewisham’s Yee, 23, came out on top after four weekends of races, winning the men’s event by 0.2 seconds.

It meant he won the title by five points from New Zealand’s Hayden Wilde.

Manchester’s Georgia TaylorBrown clinched the women’s title by a single point from fellow Briton Jessica Learmonth.

Yee came home first ahead of Belgium’s Marten Van Riel in California a week after he had done the same to Jonny Brownlee in Jersey.

The final event of the season was contested over three stages of a short course, with a 300-metre swim, four-kilometre bike and onemile run completed in turn at each stage.

Yee won the silver medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics this summer as well as a gold medal in the mixed triathlon.

The narrow victory saw him take the overall win ahead of Wilde, with another Briton, Brownlee, third in the final standings.

“It was amazing, I told Marten he’d got it, and I can’t quite believe it,” Yee said.

“I’ve learned so much this past month and it’ll help me onwards into the future. It’s so good for our sport to have such short and exciting racing taking place.

“America hasn’t always been known to enjoy short-course racing but look how many people are out here today. It’s amazing to see and I’m really pleased to put on a show for everyone.

“That first race I found so tough – it’s impossible to warm up for.

“For me, I feel like I warm up throughout the race. I went for some run points on the first race because I wanted to get some more points for [his team] the Eagles.”

Dulwich are third after six games

Gavin Rose’s side went in front after just five minutes in Essex, with Quade Taylor making a run to the front post from a corner from Giovanni McGregor to head beyond Jacob Marsden.

The visitors went two goals up in just the twelfth minute when McGregor curled a 30-yard free-kick inside the left-hand post.

The Hamlet controlled the game in the first half, against a side with Teddy Sheringham’s son Charlie as well as former Millwall striker Simeon Jackson in the starting line-up.

Hamlet goalkeeper Charlie Grainger then

made a number of good saves in the second half as Dulwich kept a clean sheet.

Rose’s side are third in the table with eleven points from six games. They have a game in hand on Dartford, who are top with nineteen points, and second-placed Maidstone United who have seventeen points.

The Hamlet’s next league game is against Billericay Town at Champion Hill on Saturday, October 9.

Second-half blitz sends Stans through

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD PROGRESSED to the first-round proper of the FA Vase, with a thumping 5-1 away victory at Worthing United last weekend.

Stansfeld conceded in the sixth minute from a set-piece, which was always going to be Worthing’s biggest threat as they possess some big players in their side.

Stansfeld gained control of the game but despite having lots of possession their final ball was letting them down.

Ollie Milton and Jack Carthy both had half-chances but didn’t threaten the Worthing goal.

Stansfeld were really coming on strong and didn’t want the half to end, with Billy Parkinson hitting the post twice.

Somehow the visitors went into the half-time break a goal down.

The second half resumed with Stansfeld again the dominant side and it was only a matter of time before the equaliser arrived with Worthing struggling to get out of their half.

The breakthrough finally came in the 67th minute when good work by Carthy released Sam Smith down the right and his shot across the keeper went into the bottom corner.

Stansfeld didn’t have to wait long to take the lead when in the 72nd

minute after Milton had his shot blocked, the rebound fell for Carthy who made no mistake from close range to make it 2-1.

Stansfeld were now totally dominant and skipper Casey Kilillea extended the lead when he headed in Parkinson’s free-kick with 16 minutes left.

In the 81st minute, Milton finally got the goal he deserved when Parkinson’s clever header found him in space to smash home and make it 4-1.

With two minutes left, Ross Morley capped a great display when Worthing failed to clear another cross and were punished.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IT’S FAIR to say Millwall’s luck has been out in so many different ways this season.

“What you’re given with one hand,” Gary Rowett lamented to the News recently, “is taken away by the other.”

He was referring to Sheyi Ojo

becoming available just as Jed Wallace picked up an illness and became the eleventh player unavailable this season.

Not to speak too soon, the only area Millwall have not been affected with players out is in goal. Just as well as Bartosz Bialkowski has been player of the year in both his seasons with the Lions.

The area Millwall have most felt the absences is in attack. Wallace and Mason Bennett missed the game at Forest and that is one of the main frustrations so far this season.

Those two were excellent in tandem up front in the second half of last season but have been deprived of the opportunity to build on that relationship. Ahead of the game against

Bristol City on Wednesday (after the News had gone to press), they had only started in the same side together once this season, the 0-0 draw against Swansea.

It should have been a mouth-watering prospect to see a potential combination of Wallace-Bennett-Ojo up front, or even the three of them behind Benik Afobe if Rowett wanted to play an extra attacker and switch to four at the back.

But, before Wednesday, they hadn’t been all available together for even one game this season.

It must be difficult then for Rowett to hear criticism of him and the side, especially as they have been so hard to beat this season despite the setbacks.

The Cardiff game aside when they spectacularly contributed to their own

downfall by conceding three headed goals, only Fulham have been at a much higher level.

As well as the injuries and illnesses, Millwall could also argue they haven’t had much fortune on the pitch.

They could make a case that they could have won the six games they have drawn in the league. They went ahead against QPR and Blackburn, in the latter game conceding after Rovers’ one effort on target.

Millwall scored a perfectly good goal through Tom Bradshaw to apparently go 2-1 up against Coventry only to see it ridiculously ruled out for offside.

And then last Saturday, after Matt Smith had headed his side in front from Ojo’s excellent cross, Max Lowe’s attempted cross whizzed over

Bialkowski and into the top corner from 40 yards.

To rub salt into the wounds, Smith hit the crossbar late on when he should have scored.

However, the league table doesn’t care about bad fortune. And at the moment it doesn’t read great for Millwall.

Prodigal son makes return against Steve Morison’s side Abdul Abdulmalik

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ABDUL ABDULMALIK made his competitive return for Millwall in their 2-0 Professional Development League defeat to Cardiff City on Monday afternoon.

Abdulmalik, 18, came on in the 62nd minute for Seb Drozd against former Lions captain Steve Morison’s Bluebirds at the Cardiff International Sports Campus.

Chanka Zimba put the hosts in front in the 21st minute and Isaak Davies added a second with sixteen minutes left.

Abdulmalik trialled at the likes of Portsmouth and Southampton during the summer after initially turning down a professional contract.

But Lions boss Gary Rowett left the

door open for the former England under-17 international and a one-year deal plus an option of a further twelve months was officially confirmed by the club on Monday.

Under-23 boss Kevin Nugent welcomed Abdulmalik back into his squad for the game in south Wales.

“Abdul has done really well for the club in recent years,” Nugent said. “He possesses great ability and potential for such a young man and we look forward to him maximising both of those attributes here at Millwall.

“He re-joins a group of talented youngsters hoping to make their own breakthrough and pathway to the first team, as we have seen so many times in the past.

“Myself and my staff look forward to working with him once again.”

Meanwhile, Cardiff are flying in

Morison’s second season in charge, having won all five games this campaign.

Cardiff are top of the South section, while Millwall are sixth out of nine teams after two wins and three defeats.

“They had a bit of pressure for five or ten minutes, which you’re going to get,” Morison said. “The difference between us last year to this year is the fact that we can stand up to that pressure and deal with it and come through it.

“Then you come out the back of the pressure and go and nick a goal which is exactly what you want, it settles everyone down.

“It looked like we were trying to give them a goal right at the death, which we’ll speak about.

“But, five games, five wins, one goal against, eleven goals scored - so pretty pleased.”

Jed is Millwall home bird exclusive

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk THIS SUMMER wasn’t the first time Jed Wallace had been linked with a move away from Millwall – and he has revealed why he didn’t leave the Lions when Middlesbrough chased him three years ago.

Boro submitted a joint-bid for Wallace and George Saville, with the latter moving on deadline day for a fee of around £8million.

But just like in the last transfer window, there was little chance that Wallace was going to cut his ties with the Lions.

Wallace admitted Boro, who were then managed by Tony Pulis, “pushed more” to get a deal over the line for Saville.

There were also reasons on and off the pitch for the attacker to stay.

Wallace and Millwall endured a difficult season after that unsettling summer and only secured their survival on the secondlast day.

But the last two campaigns have brought double-figures in goals for Wallace and two top-half finishes.

Wallace said that a move to Boro wasn’t close.

“Not at the time. At the time they obviously came in with quite a lot of money for me and Sav and pushed it more for Sav,” Wallace explained.

“I’d only had the one year in the Championship, we’d just had a baby, we’d just bought a house so it made a lot of sense for me to stay at Millwall.

“I had a great relationship with Neil Harris and I’ve always said that the moment I walked into Millwall I loved being here.

“I’ve signed for the club three times so I think that tells you how I feel about playing here. I felt like I just wanted to get settled and that would bring out the best in me football-wise. That’s certainly happened the last couple of years, I’ve probably played as well as I have done here.

“Long may that continue and let’s hope we can get as high as we can and compete with those so-called bigger clubs.

“We want to try to get into that top six, which is difficult. But, listen, Barnsley did it last season, so why can’t we?”

Attacker on why he stayed with Lions after 2018 Boro bid

Wallace believes the club Saville rejoined in the summer is in a much stronger position than when he left.

Gary Rowett, his squad and the fans expect a top-six challenge. The Lions have had a slow start but a raft of injuries and illnesses have meant their full potential hasn’t been realised yet this season.

Wallace feels that if they can get their main players back fit and keep them fit they can be contenders for the play-offs.

“The club’s grown and improved a lot on and off the pitch in the time that Sav’s not been here. You have to give a lot of respect to us as a group of players, the manager and everyone at Millwall because the

last two seasons we finished eighth and eleventh which shows everything you need to know,” Wallace said.

“We are a decent Championship team these days. Notoriously for Millwall the last 20 years they’ve had a few seasons in the Championship, got relegated and had to go back up.

“Whereas now with this group of players under Neil and under Gary we’ve been overall a very decent Championship team.

“We’re probably like Blackburn, QPR, over the last three or four seasons, we want to move from being a mid-table team to challenging for those top-six positions.

Ballard pleased for nice guy Saka

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL’S DANIEL Ballard says Bukayo Saka is the “nicest footballer I’ve ever met” – and the Lions centreback hopes to join the England international in the Arsenal team one day.

Ballard, 22, and Saka, 20, have played together in a senior competition, albeit for Arsenal under-21s in the Football League Trophy in 2018.

Saka had a brilliant Euro 2020, but missed the decisive penalty against Italy at Wembley as player of the tournament Gianluigi Donnarumma saved his effort after Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho had also failed from the spot.

There was the inevitable abuse on social media for those players, but Saka has put

that behind him and scored in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Tottenham in the North London derby last Sunday.

Ballard never had any doubts about Saka’s resilience.

“I was probably more gutted than he was at the time,” Ballard said. “He’s just an amazing character, certainly the nicest footballer I’ve ever met.

“He’s such as a genuine, hard-working person. What you see in glimpses is exactly what he’s like, it’s not show, it’s not acting.

“It was tough for him but such a special talent like him, I was sure he’d bounce back and he has done already.

“He’s probably one of Arsenal’s best players and he’s shown that again this season.”

Ballard is on loan at Millwall for the season and is impressing in Gary Rowett’s side.

His ultimate objective is to get into the Gunners side, though he won’t lose sight of his immediate challenge.

Ballard added: “Yeah, I think that’s got to be the goal. Of course I’m fully focussed on staying in this Millwall team and working extremely hard.

“I want to get as much game-time as possible and help Millwall win every game possible.

“But of course there is an end goal, whether it be next year or in two years, I think the main goal is to play for Arsenal.”

“We’re going to have take a lot more responsibility as a group of players and stop conceding set-plays and things like that.

“That could be the difference for us getting into that top six.

“I’ve always maintained we’ve got one of the best goalkeepers in the league in Bart [Bialkowski]. We have Hutchy [Shaun Hutchinson] and Coops [Jake Cooper] who when they’re playing to the best of their game they are two of the best centrehalves in the league.

“We look strong with numbers in midfield. We’ve had games this year when people like Thommo [Ben Thompson]

haven’t even made the bench. We’ve not had that luxury before.

“If we can keep everyone fit, which at the moment we’re not managing to do, that’s always a massive factor for any team with a small squad like ours. You’ve got to keep your best players fit.

“But the likes of Hutchy, Benno [Mason Bennett], Danny Mac have been injured, that’s not ideal. We need to keep players fit, get our home form going. I think if we can pick our home form up to what it was a couple of years ago and match that with our improved away form, there’s no reason why we can’t push up the table and then try to sneak into that top six.”

Millwall make NHS gesture with tickets

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FOR ALL that it seems like Millwall’s injury problems are never-ending, boss Gary Rowett could actually have his strongest side available against Barnsley at Oakwell this Saturday.

That’s of course assuming no player is added to the injury or illness list ahead of the game, with Connor Mahoney and Mason Bennett currently the only players unavailable.

This preview was written before

the game against Bristol City on Wednesday evening, so with the way things have been going this season it may already be out of date.

Before the clash against the Robins, eleven players had been unavailable for at least one league game this season.

But if it’s only those two above that are out this weekend, then Rowett will have some tough selection decisions.

If you consider Sheyi Ojo is ahead of Bennett in the pecking order, Rowett would have his first-choice front three available against Markus Schopp’s

side.

With Jed Wallace an obvious pick in that front three, that leaves Benik Afobe and Matt Smith vying for the central position.

Rowett surprised some people last Saturday when he left Jake Cooper out of the team against Nottingham Forest. It was the first time Rowett had not picked Cooper for a league game when the centre-back has been fit.

Some managers don’t tell players why they are not in the team. It has been reported that Tottenham

boss Nuno Espirito Santo does not appreciate people knocking on his door for an explanation.

But Rowett works differently and knows that disappointing players is an inevitable part of the job.

“You want the competition for places.

If there is competition for places and people perform and produce then you have to give them that opportunity,” Rowett said.

“I felt as though Matt has done that in some of the league games and been a threat for us and had chances. He showed that in pre-season.

Millwall considering new training complex in Kent

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL HAVE acquired land in Kent with a view to building a new “high-end training complex”, a letter to residents from the club revealed.

The Lions’ first-team and under-23s are based on Calmont Road in Bromley, with the proposed new facility in West Kingsdown, Sevenoaks, about 20 miles south east.

According to the club-headed letter that was posted on social media, Millwall have organised a consultation with local residents on Fawkham Road next week.

Millwall were previously linked with a move to Kent over plans by a property company to develop land around The Den, which the club said would have made it impossible for them to stay

Millwall chief executive Steve Kavanagh has written to residents.

The letter reads: “It gives me great pleasure to write to you on behalf of

“We have acquired this land to build a high-end training complex that will be the new training ground for our club.

KentOnline reported that Sevenoaks council said it had not received a planning application from the club.

They reported Daniel Whitmarsh, communication and consultation manager, as saying: “Should an application be lodged in the future, the community will have an opportunity to comment on the proposals.”

“With Benik coming back from injury we want to be sure that he’s fine. They are tough decisions if Jed is available as well.

“But that’s my job. For everyone else you just turn up and play and hopefully enjoy it. But for me, I get all the tough bits letting people down most weeks.

“Picking a team that everyone’s happy with or not happy with, it’s just the nature of the job. That’s what I’m paid to do.

“The way I work I’ve got quite an open relationship with the players. If someone’s been left out usually I’ll tell them because I think sometimes that makes me feel better.

Millwall go into the second international break of the season after this weekend, hopefully with their first away win in this campaign behind them.

The Lions have won just seven of their 30 fixtures away at Barnsley since their first meeting in 1925.

Rowett hasn’t had a full squad to choose from this season as Millwall have been hit with a number of injuries and illnesses.

That has particularly affected the attack, with Connor Mahoney the latest player to be added to the injury list and likely to miss the game against Barnsley this weekend along with Mason Bennett.

The next international break is after that match before a home game against Luton Town on October 16, when Rowett will hope to have a full hand to deal from.

“I’ve spoken quite openly about it, it’s probably been the most frustrating time in my career as a manager, if I’m being honest,” Rowett said.

“It’s been virtually impossible to pick, a), our strongest team and, b), the same team for two games in a row, which it doesn’t take a genius to work out means there is a real lack of continuity from game to game.

“Obviously there’s an element of patience needed because we’re not where we want to be in the league and the wins have not been [at the number] we want them to be.

“But I believe they will be, we’ve performed consistently but there is an extra bit to come from the team and I think that extra bit wins you games.

“That’s going to come with a little bit of time. I believe that after the international break, if everyone stays fit, that’s when I expect us to climb the table.”

Millwall haven’t won away from home in eight games since their 2-1 victory at Stoke City in April.

Their record away at Barnsley is poor, with only two wins at Oakwell in their last eleven matches.

The Lions went into the first international break after beating Blackpool 2-1, and will aim to repeat that with three points this weekend.

Speaking before Wednesday’s game against Bristol City, Rowett said: “We’ve two big games this week and if we get positive results we could be talking about seven games unbeaten in the league, which is a good run in the Championship, it’s a difficult run to put together.

“That’s the Championship, we’ve got to start putting in top performances to feel good going into the international break.

“It’s interesting because QPR, for example, started the season like a house on fire but [before the midweek games] are only three points ahead of us.

“It’s a very competitive division and a couple of wins can move you up the table and change the whole perspective of how you feel.”

Lions not worried about Ojo recall exclusive

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL EXPECT that Sheyi Ojo will be with them for the season even though Liverpool have a recall clause in his loan deal in January.

Ojo has impressed so far in south London and got his first assists on his second start when he crossed for Matt Smith to score against Nottingham Forest last weekend.

Millwall signed Troy Parrott on loan from Tottenham last season before he was recalled in January, though that was down to the move not working out and the forward was loaned to League One Ipswich for the second half of the season.

Arguably the most damaging recall in recent seasons was Jed Wallace going back to Wolves under Kenny Jackett in 2015-16 meaning Neil Harris didn’t have him for the end of the season, including the defeat in the play-off final to Barnsley.

“I’d expect that anyway,” Rowett replied when asked if thinks he will have Ojo for the season. “Liverpool have got enough forwards without worrying about calling Sheyi back.

“For me, he’s shown a real promise so far. He’s shown a really good level.

“It will be exciting to see how he links up with the likes of Benik [Afobe], the likes of Jed and with Matt after he set up Matt’s goal last weekend.

“That’s what you want. You want those options and quality players and we’ve spoken about quality in the final third, at times we’ve not had enough of that to win games.

“And then when we get it we don’t seem to be able to play it for long.

“So it will be nice to have those players available to see if we can do some really good work and if we can improve results with it.”
