Local MPS blast the new social care levy as a gimmick

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The new social care levy and an imminent cut to Universal Credit will push thousands in Southwark further into working poverty and food bank reliance, say Labour MPs, who blasted the ‘care-less’ tax as a ‘gimmick that hits low paid workers the hardest’.

Last week Boris Johnson U-turned on his election pledge and announced he was raising National Insurance to get the NHS back on track and cut the 'catastrophic' cost of care for families who often lose their life-savings and are forced to sell homes to pay for a loved ones care.

Under the new plans, employees, employers and the self-employed will pay 1.25p more in the pound for National Insurance from April 2022 but, come April 2023, the extra tax will be collected as a new Health and Social Care Levy and, unlike National Insurance, it will also be paid by state pensioners who are still in work.

Only earners taking home less than £9,564 a year, or £797 a month, will neither pay National Insurance nor the new levy.

In a huge break from traditional Conservative policy, taxes and public spending are now at their highest level since the war.

“We know we can’t rely solely on private insurance because demand would be too low for insurers to offer an affordable price,” Johnson told the House of Commons on Tuesday, September 7, as he outlined his plans to fix the broken social care system, two years after first promising reform.

“And a universal system of free care for all would be needlessly expensive, when those who can afford to contribute to their care should do so.

“Instead the state should target its help at protecting people against the catastrophic fear of losing everything to pay for the cost of their care, and that is what this government will do.

“We are setting a limit on what people can be asked to pay, and we will be working with the financial services industry to innovate and help people to insure themselves against expenditure up to that limit.

“Wherever you live, whatever your age, your income or your condition, from October 2023 no-one starting care will pay more than £86,000 over their lifetime, and no-one with assets of less than £20,000 will have to make any contribution from their savings or housing wealth – up from £14,000 today.

“Meanwhile anyone with assets between

“And this new upper capital limit of £100,000 is more than four times the current limit, helping many more people with modest assets.

“And as we fix this long-term long-standing problem in social care, we will also address the fears that many have about how their loved ones will be looked after, by investing in the quality of care, in carers themselves, and by integrating health and care in England so older people and disabled people are cared for better, with dignity, and in the right setting.”

The new levy is expected to raise £12 billion a year for the NHS to clear its immediate backlog, before a chunk is ring-fenced for social care. Even so, this proportion is only due in three years time, and details of exactly how much will be put aside are sketchy.

Criticisms from Labour MPs have focused on how the rise disproportionately targets the lowest earners while the wealthiest stand to benefit the most, as lower and middle earners lose a greater proportion of their salary to National Insurance than earners who take home over £50,000 a year. It has been estimated 2.5 million people across the country will now be £1,000 a year worse off due to the hike.

Helen Hayes, said: “It is telling in the prime minister’s statement there was not a single word of tribute to our extraordinary social care workforce, or any mention of the pay increase they so desperately need.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said: “Social care needs a complete overhaul, not just a Johnson-Tory gimmick that hits low paid workers hardest. Full reform was promised and is much needed.”

A new analysis from the Labour Party shows that the combination of the new social care levy and Universal Credit cut would see the average social care worker, nurse, teaching assistant or supermarket worker £1,100 a year worse off.

A band 5 nurse will lose £1,159; a social care worker will have £1,108 less in the bank; and supermarket workers and teaching assistants will lose out on £1,040. When combined with the upcoming Universal Credit cut - which will see the £20 uplift introduced during the pandemic scrapped in October - many could be pushed further into working poverty and food bank reliance.

Neil Coyle says the upcoming Universal Credit cut will affect 7,837 working people in his constituency alone, many of whom are receiving support to help with housing or childcare costs. Around 10,937 children in his constituency are in families dependent on the benefit.

He told the News that Department for Work and Pensions staff have admitted

the cut has not been advertised directly to people in Southwark, an issue he raised with parliament’s work and pensions select committee last week - fearing that many families are simply unaware they will soon lose out. It is estimated that 900,000 more people across the country could soon be reliant on food banks due to the change.

This week, Labour leader Keir Starmer visited Bermondsey to meet people affected by the £20 cut to Universal Credit and National Insurance tax increase.

He was joined by Labour’s deputy leader Angela Rayner on Monday, September 13 and Coyle.

“The Conservatives’ plans to impose unfair taxes are an attack on working people and an attack on the key worker heroes who have got our country through the pandemic,” Starmer said.

“The government’s announcement on social care will not fix the crisis in social care, will not clear the backlog in our NHS and will not protect homeowners from having to sell their homes to pay for care.

“As usual with this prime minister, it is working people who are going to pay for the cost of his failure.

“Two and a half million working families will face a double whammy of a national insurance tax rise and a cut to Universal Credit.

“This is the same old Tories – putting the very wealthiest ahead of working people who have to pick up the bill.”

one Man’s decades-long quest to walk every street in London Someone mentioned to me that there’s a novel about a man who tries to walk every street in London.

I think he eventually goes mad.

I haven’t read that.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A south-east London man is on a mission to walk every street in the capital.

Jack Cornish, who works for Boroughbased walking charity Ramblers, began his quest about ten years ago, while living in Brixton and working in Holborn. He was walking to work every day and aimed to go a different route each morning. As he put it, the undertaking "expanded out from there".

He has been working on the marathon task ever since, setting aside times to tackle huge chunks of London, as well as walking smaller sections in quiet moments, like in a spare half hour before meeting friends at the pub.

Jack, who has also walked from Land's End to John O'Groats, thinks he has done about a third of London so far in the decade since he began. He logs his walks in three ways: on the Strava app, adding his routes to a customised Google map, and colouring the streets he has covered in an A-Z book.

And there is no cheating in Jack's mapping method: it's not enough just to set foot for a second in a street before walking on to the next one.

Jack makes sure he walks down each one, which can make for a zigzagging, 'ladder' effect.

Asked whether he regrets his mammoth undertaking, Jack said: "Someone mentioned to me that there's a novel about a man who tries to walk every street in London. I think he eventually goes mad. I haven't read that."

Jack's day job for Ramblers, whose office is on Clink Street in Borough, is running a programme to re-establish the many paths, tracks and alleyways that have not been legally recognised as public rights of way.

The programme, called 'Don't Lose Your Way', has identified 49,000 paths that could be lost to the public because they have not been formally established. The deadline for applications on all of these rights of way is the start of 2026 - as the government set a 25-year time limit on its Countryside and Rights of Way act to help re-establish these routes at the start of the century. Getting rights of way legally established gives them a significant level of protection and they can’t be easily built upon.

"We’ve got a network of paths, but it could be better," Jack said. "There are some villages and communities without many paths at all. " There are two main reasons for getting more rights of way legally established. "One is pragmatic and practical, people like going out walking and cycling, and it's important to

get people out of their cars, and it obviously helps with tackling health issues.

"The other is that paths are part of our history. These rights of way are the oldest part of our history that we still have. It's part of the ordinary heritage of how people have negotiated the towns and cities they live in".

There is a long history of Southwark residents and south Londoners defending their public rights of way.

One Tree Hill in Honor Oak at the south-eastern edge of the borough was fenced off by a private golf club in 1896, which led to mass protests in the area before the park was eventually reopened to the public.

Jack, who now lives in Brockley, where he also grew up, has recently begun walking into the office again, and said that there is more potential in Southwark for better walking routes. Ramblers proposed a new set of 'leisure walking' routes ahead of the mayoral election this year, several of which are in south London.

"It would be great to have more routes in to the centre like the Surrey Canal [in Peckham], as alternatives to things like walking up the Old Kent Road. What I enjoy is going on the side streets, the little quiet cut throughs.

There's a lot of potential for that in areas like Walworth and Bermondsey."

BISHOP arrives at court flanked by supporters

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell’s controversial ‘Coronavirus cure’ bishop appeared in court on Monday where he denied fraud.

Dr Climate Wiseman, who heads up the Kingdom Church, appeared at Inner London Crown Court on September 13 accused of a single charge of fraud and two charges under Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations between March 23 and 24.

He arrived dressed in a white bishop’s

robe adorned with gold crosses and a crucifix, flanked by supporters carrying banners and placards in support of the ‘prophet’.

It is alleged that during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the 46-yearold had sold oil and a piece of string, for £91, marketed as ‘Divine Cleansing Oil’ or ‘Divine Plague Prevention Kit’ both in person and online via ‘Bishop Climate Ministries’.

His defence argued he should be free to practise his religion, and told the judge that Dr Wiseman was not an ‘anti-vaxxer’ and had, in fact, been double jabbed.

The same day, his supporters and members of the congregation descended on Tooley Street to protest outside the local authority’s headquarters after its trading standards team had kickstarted legal proceedings after an investigation by this newspaper.

Dressed in matching red t-shirts, the demonstrators held banners and placards declaring: “Southwark Labour councillors are anti-Christ and faith haters”, ‘Bishop Climate is the true prophet”, “we need freedom of faith”, and “there is healing power in divine cleansing oil”.

The first phase of work is due to begin in January next year, with the second starting after the block is fully empty from around June 2022. It includes updating window panels, balconies, roofing work, ventilation, internal and external

refurbishment and redecoration, but also compartmentalisation and fire safety works and asbestos removal.

The gas supply will also be removed and an ‘automated fire suppression system’ installed - for example sprinklers or a misting system. Key issues include now non-compliant external wall panels, a communal stairwell that “doesn’t meet current requirements for a single communal escape staircase”, and risers and ducts that need to be fully firestopped or completely replaced if found to be made from combustible material.

£16m bill for work on one block Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Making Lakanal House’s sister block fire safety compliant and rehousing residents forced to leave during the upcoming major works could cost Southwark Council over sixteen million, according to a new report published this week.

More than a decade since the devastating Lakanal House fire that claimed the lives of six people, Southwark Council is still grappling with extensive and as yet unresolved fire safety problems in Camberwell’s Sceaux Gardens estate.

Documents prepared for Tuesday’s cabinet meeting updated councillors and officers on the extent of the work needed, timeframe, and how and when tenants and leaseholders will be moved out - and where.

It revealed that the overwhelming majority of tenants wanted to leave and not go back; with just four deciding to exercise their right of return out of 82.

Marie Curie has 98 flats, of which 82 house council tenants and eleven are owned by leaseholders. There are now five empty properties in the block.

By the end of August this year, only three tenants so far had accepted an offer of permanent accommodation within the borough, and around seven properties have been turned down.

The cost implications on the council’s already stretched finances are huge.

Putting a ‘waking watch’ in place between November 2020 and June 2022 will cost over half a million in total, while rehoming costs are estimated at £10,000 per tenant, of which there are 85. Add on other the lump sum inconvenience payment and other moving costs and the council has already budgeted an expenditure of £840,000 for relocation alone. The council has also set aside £45,000 to pay for two new ‘resident services officer’ jobs to help manage this process.

Each of the eleven leaseholder properties are estimated - by the council - to be valued “in the region of £290,000”.

Including fees and other duties or taxes this could easily reach up to £311,900 per home if bought back - a total cost of £3.4 million. And this is before the major works are even factored in. Early feasibility studies set a figure at £12.2 million - excluding fees. A further financial review is underway with a final budget due to be agreed in October.

These figures appear to show that even a conservative, early estimate would put the entire project at over sixteen million.

The big unanswered question, however, is why the problems afflicting the block, and the extent of work required, has

The report is the first time the council has publicly provided significant details on its relocation offer for tenants and leaseholders alike.

It explains that tenants can either temporarily move and then have the right to return to their homes, or will be offered a first refusal to move permanently into alternative accommodation in the estate’s newly built block; Cezanne House, or elsewhere.

Tenants will be entitled to the same size home, for both temporary and permanent moves, even if they were previously ‘under occupying’; though they can choose to downsize and will be eligible for the same ‘smart move’ payment.

A household that meets the definition of ‘overcrowded’ will be entitled to a larger home but would have to move elsewhere permanently, as Marie Curie only has two-bed homes; likely a major factor in the number choosing not to return.

The council had previously committed to offer all residents a ‘lump sum’ inconvenience payment of £6,500. It has now confirmed that arrears and other debts owed to the local authority will be deducted from this figure.

This does not include ‘reasonable’

moving costs which will also be covered by the council, The report goes on to confirm: “For temporary moves – rent will be no more than is paid at Marie Curie, although service charge may be different.

“If a tenant moves back to Marie Curie after work is completed there may be changes to service charges.

“For permanent moves – rent will be the amount usually charged for the property allocated.”

Leaseholders, the council will offer to buy back the Marie Curie property or provide them with temporary accommodation and the right to return.

They will not have to pay rent on their new, temporary home, but will need to pay council tax and service charges, with no council tax or service charge payable on Marie Curie property during this period - though they would need to continue paying any mortgage.

Resident leaseholders, as opposed to owners who live elsewhere, are also entitled to the moving cost lump sum.

If a resident leaseholder does decide to sell up and leave, the council will cover solicitors fees, surveyors fees, mortgage redemption and redirection of post.

Private tenants who let flats owned by leaseholders are also entitled to some, but more limited, financial support.

How many allegations have been made is still unknown

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Historic abuse allegations at Dulwich College are being investigated by the authorities, the school has confirmed.

An update on the school’s website, published in June this year, explained how the school was ‘dealing with historic allegations of abuse’ and that investigations were ‘on-going internally, with a small number of cases now in the hands of the authorities’; implying legal proceedings are in motion. The school declined to comment when contacted by the News.

It is unknown how many allegations have been made and when they date to, if they are against staff members or pupils, and whether any arrests or charges have been made by police.

The Met were unable to confirm any details when contacted this week.

This is the first time historic allegations have come to light at the private school, which provides both day and boarding education.

As this paper has previously reported, in March 2021 a series of allegations about pupil-on-pupil sexual violence and abuse was published on the website Everyone’s Invited, and an open letter written by a former Dulwich College student.

The majority of these cases were within recent years - and they did not involve abuse by staff.

At the time, Dr Joe Spence the school’s head wrote: “The behaviour described is distressing and entirely unacceptable; we condemn it unreservedly.

“This has led us to enhance our current provision and to develop a bespoke and robust response to effect change.

“We recognise that the impact of cultural change will take time to become deeply embedded, not least where the issues we are facing are widespread and societal; and that most importantly, this will happen only if we work together and take shared responsibility for the actions of our children.

“The great majority of Dulwich College pupils are considerate and respectful towards others; they are acknowledged to be grounded, reflective, and curious and engaged with the world. “Our confidence in them is undimmed and we will do our utmost to uphold their reputation whilst addressing the actions of those whose behaviour we condemn.

“Our ethos is one of respect and support for others in all we do and we are, as a school, committed to gender equality and to the elimination of discrimination on the basis of sex, sexual orientation, race, age, disability or religious belief.

“As a boys’ school the first thing we must do is listen to what women and girls are telling us about their experiences and their concerns.

“I am determined and optimistic that good will come as a direct result of listening to those who have spoken out and it is our collective responsibility not to let them down.

Where changes need to be made, we will make them.”

This month will also see an Independent Review of Behaviour, Culture and Safeguarding published. Commissioned by the school’s governors, the report has been conducted by the INEQE Safeguarding Group and led by Jim Gamble, a former Chief Police Officer and the founding chief executive of the Child Exploitation and On-line Protection Centre.

council set to bring Leisure centres ‘back in-house’ in 2023

It is the second major service to return to being directly run by the local authority, after Tooley Street pledged to bring repairs back into its remit in 2018; both in an effort to drive up standards after years of outsourcing, contractors and subcontractors, but also to create employment opportunities for Southwark residents.

Since the pandemic the council has increasingly explored other options after lockdown left the operator with a financial black hole the public purse had to fill.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man has made an appeal for his long-lost father, whom he believes may be based in Southwark, to come forward after 30 years apart.

Martyn Weston last saw his father, called Evonne Lowe but known as John, in the early 1990s at their home in Shropshire when Martyn was 12.

John had split up with Martyn's mother a decade previously but used to visit his children regularly.

"One day, he came to the house and he started crying. He said to my mum 'please make sure he’s not in any kind

of the council’s pioneering free swim and gym scheme as being major factors causing the financial underperformance.

“Both the council and [Everyone Active] were in discussion at that time about the best way to address this.”

The report also notes this could be the first in a wave of local authorities jettisoning their operators and moving fitness and leisure service back into their own management. Southwark Council is understood to be in discussions with two unnamed boroughs considering similar approaches.

A statement issued by Southwark Council last week, ahead of Tuesday’s cabinet meeting, explained: “Whilst Everyone Active has provided a good service for residents, the financial pressures faced by the leisure sector, both because of the increased of trouble'." That was the last Martyn saw of his father.

Three decades passed and Martyn, now in his early 40s, had children of his own. They began to ask questions about their grandfather and Martyn thought that he would like them to have a relationship with John, who would now be in his 70s.

Using various family tracing websites, Martyn found that John was married to a woman who lived in Webber Street in Borough after he had broken up with their mother but before he left his family behind, seemingly for good. This woman died in the 1980s and was cremated at Honor Oak, Martyn said.

Martyn is calling for John, or anyone who knows him, to come forward. "I just want to make sure he’s safe, I don’t want him to be in any kind of trouble," he said.

"My kids have got to the age now where they want to know, they want to speak to him. They’re young but they’re old enough to make that decision."

"My main hope is he’s found somewhere to call home; that’s important. Whatever he was running from before, I hope he’s now put those problems to bed "There's no malice, no resentment on my part. I'm not angry. He had a difficult upbringing, things can't have been easy for him. I’ll always help him, he’s my dad."

Martyn has no photos of John, as the family considered it too painful after he disappeared.

The council is now planning a “seamless transition’ and “transfer of staff”, with the entire take-over process expected to cost £2.4m.

Alongside taking control of all existing centres by June 2023, Southwark Council also intends to open a new athletics centre in Southwark Park by ‘the end of the year’ and a new leisure centre in Canada Water by 2025.

Councillor Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure, added: “We are excited by the opportunities that our new, inhouse leisure service will provide. This decision will enable us to continue supporting many more people to live healthier lives.

“We will put residents and staff front and centre of the decisions we take so that we provide the high quality facilities and services needed to make a real difference to people’s lives.

“I’d like to thank Everyone Active’s Southwark staff for their hard work and commitment throughout the pandemic.

We hope that in 2023 many will choose to stay on with us.

“We are committed to investing in sport and leisure and have many exciting plans in the pipeline. We are working hard to expand our offer of accessible, high quality facilities, for people across the borough.

Six are arrested after police find revolver and ammunition

Officers on an intelligence operation in the area with the aim of finding people involved in supplying firearms arrested a 43-year-old man outside a property on suspicion of having a gun at about 5.45pm last Monday, September 7.

They searched the property and found a revolver and ammunition inside. The five people between the ages of 16 and 55 who were inside the property were arrested and taken for questioning at a south London police

station, along with the first man to be detained.

Detective inspector Adam Seton, from the Met’s specialist crime command, said:" The hard work, dedication and professionalism of my officers and their armed colleagues has resulted in another deadly firearm being removed from criminal circulation.

"I am in no doubt that this weapon would have been used to cause serious harm or death on the streets of London. We will continue to use every tool at our disposal to remove firearms from criminal hands and protect our communities by arresting and prosecuting those intent on perpetrating serious violence."

Tower Bridge flooded!

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Tower Bridge flooded on Tuesday amid heavy rainfall, with images and footage showing cars, cyclists and pedestrians struggling through the downpour.

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for London and much of the east of England on Tuesday, with rain causing disruption for travellers throughout the day.

It appears the Tower Bridge problem could be down to anti-terrorist measures put in place after the attacks

Authorities tried to fix this issue three years ago, but it seems that this may not have been totally effective, given the images circulating on Tuesday.

In response to a question by Keith Prince, a London assembly member for the Conservatives, in 2018, Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "Following the terrorist attacks on Westminster and London Bridge in 2017, it was necessary for the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) to install permanent barriers along various bridges in central London, including Tower Bridge.

"Unfortunately, a number of the barriers on Tower Bridge have blocked the gullies and led to a build-up of standing water. The MPS has been working with Transport for London to address this issue and, on 20 November 2018, barriers were removed to clear the drainage system of any blockages and clean the surrounding area. Barriers were then put back in place, but with alterations to ensure more water can flow into the gullies in the future."

Tube services were also been affected on the District Line earlier in the day, but services were running normally by mid-afternoon. There were also reports of flooding on the North Circular road.

Slippers Place infilling plans delayed

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A decision on a controversial Bermondsey infill project has been pushed back by a month, because planning committee members have not done a site visit yet.

Southwark Council wants to build eighteen council flats on the site of a car park by Matson House in the Slippers Place Estate. Some residents of the estate are against the plans, as we have reported, saying they are worried about a loss of light because of

potential overshadowing.

The Matson House car park site was included on the agenda for Southwark’s planning sub-committee B on Monday (September 14) but the application will now go back to the committee on October 20, after committee members have undertaken a site visit.

The development is part of a wider Southwark programme to build council flats on spaces that the local authority considers under-used, to help tackle the huge housing need in the borough.

Many proposed sites have been controversial, as current residents think they would lose open space.

Housing boss defends controversial policy as her ‘moral duty’

Dozens of Southwark residents protested outside the council's Tooley Street offices last week to show their opposition for its council housebuilding policy.

The protesters, coordinated by new umbrella campaign group Yes to Fair Redevelopment and others, spoke out last Tuesday evening, eptember 7, against Southwark Council's so-called 'infill' policy, which would see new council homes built on empty or 'underused' spaces in estates throughout the borough. Activists say that in many cases this will take away green space from residents or block light.

The council point to the waiting list for council homes, which is in the thousands, and the many more families currently living in accommodation that is unsuitable for them.

Tanya Murat from Southwark Defend Council Housing, who was among the people leading the protests, said: “More and more estate residents are joining the fight for fair redevelopment. We want a real solution to the housing crisis, to protect and enhance our green spaces and play areas. Don't destroy playgrounds and community halls. We say don't build unsafe rooftop homes. Make life better for people living on council estates, not worse. If the Labour Council can't figure out how to deliver that, as well as an increase in council housing, then what is, in fact, its purpose?”

Janine Below, a resident of the Bells Gardens Estate in Peckham, said: "We are a hard-working, smart, organised and educated bunch of people who are acting together across the whole of Southwark and getting things done. There are many ways to build homes but destroying communities already there is not one of them. It’s just a matter of time that

School drops Aske name because of investment in notorious slaving company

Two men arrested after alleged naked attack

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two naked men were arrested "following a struggle" this week after allegedly attacking a cyclist near Elephant & Castle station in broad daylight.

Footage from the scene shows the men, one naked and the other in just boxers, appearing to kick a man off his bike on Thursday afternoon, September 9.

Police were called to the scene and said two people had allegedly been assaulted, and both had minor injuries.

The alleged assailants were arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure and actual bodily harm. They were later taken to hospital, before being released under investigation.

Officers said in a statement: "Police were called at 14:30hrs on Thursday, 9 September to Walworth Road SE17 to a report of two men attacking people in the street.

"One was reported to be naked and the other wearing only underpants.

Officers attended.

"Two people were found suffering from minor injuries. Both said they had been attacked by two men who then walked off. One was allegedly pushed off his bike and the other assaulted.

"The suspects, aged 32 and 26, were located and arrested following a struggle on suspicion of indecent exposure and ABH. "Both men were taken to hospital under Section 3 of the Mental Health Act and later returned to custody. They were then released under investigation.

Haberdashers' Aske's Federation, which is made up of several schools including one in Borough that opened in 2019, told parents in an open letter this month that it is rebranding as Haberdashers' Trust South.

Robert Aske was a successful seventeenth century merchant, primarily trading in silk. He became a freeman of the Haberdashers livery company, which was one of several ancient trade associations in the City of London. Aske invested £500 (about £110,000 in today's money) in the Royal African Company in 1672, becoming one of its founding members. The value of this investment increased to about £650 by the time of his death, or just over one per cent of his wealth.

The Royal African Company transported more slaves to north and south American than any other slaving organisation. The Haberdashers' Company say that the slaving business traded 90,000 human beings in the seventeen years between its launch and Aske's death in 1689.

Edward Colston, whose statue was famously toppled in Bristol last year, was a shareholder in the Royal African Company and served as its deputy governor.

Aske may have voted and taken part in policy discussions at the Royal African Company, as his investment entitled him. There is no evidence that he held a senior position at the company.

The schools were named after him because of the legacy of £32,000 he left for charitable purposes - the equivalent of more than £8m in today's money. Since the original school was founded in 1693, some 300,000 children have received an education sponsored by Aske, according to Haberdashers' Company.

Haberdashers' Trust South held a consultation with parents and other people involved with the schools on getting rid of Aske's name, as well as a statue of him in the New Cross school and paintings, as well as the motto 'Serve and Obey'.

The group's CEO Jan Shadick said there had been a wide range of views.

"Those in favour of its removal think that Aske’s investment – however small – was offensive, unacceptable and at odds with today’s values," she said in a letter. "Others thought that our school names are overly complicated and need refining, and we have an opportunity to do this.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A woman called the police after a man allegedly tried to pry open her car door in Bermondsey last week, with her young daughter inside.

The man was was found nearly an hour and a half after the alarming incident, which took place near Greggs on Ilderton Road, close to South Bermondsey station last Monday, September 6. Officers said he was being looked after by medical professionals and the incident is not being treated as an attempted abduction.

A spokesperson for the Met said: "Police were called at approximately 15:20hrs on Monday, 6 September by the driver of a car who reported that a man had tried to open the doors to her vehicle in Ilderton Road, SE16.

"She stated she believed the man may be having a mental health episode. Officers

As a result of the consultation, Aske's name will be removed from school names, the trading name of the umbrella organisation and from other forms of "everyday use" like letterheads.

'Aske' will stay in the legal name of the trust.

Ms Shadick said that the trust will "seek to repurpose" the statue of Aske at Hatcham College in New Cross. "We will investigate the extensive restrictions over its treatment and aim to contextualise it in a way that ensures alignment with our values and longer-term educational objectives," she added.

The 'Serve and Obey' motto will also go.

"There was overwhelming agreement that its 16th Century origins need explanation and are no longer relevant to the society in which we live," Ms Shadick said. "It is important that our pupils and staff feel a connection to any motto or strapline we adopt and we will begin discussions on a new one as part of our ongoing work on culture."

The Borough school on Southwark Bridge Road will now be called Haberdasher's Borough Academy.

The news comes after the controversial decision by the charity that owns a statue of slave investor and Guy's Hospital founder Thomas Guy to seek to remove it from its prominent location at the hospital.

Prince William pops up in Bermondsey on 999 day

He made the visit to the fire station as part of emergency services day on Thursday, September 9, also known as 999 Day. The prince was seen chatting with firefighters at the station as well as Lila, a little girl who collapsed in March 2020 but was successfully resuscitated by an ambulance worker and a couple of off-duty firefighters.

Emergency services day is an annual occasion to thank the two million staff at blue-light services in the UK, who work so hard to keep the public safe.

Tom Scholes-Fogg, who founded the day in 2016, said this year: "We all

take the NHS and emergency services for granted. We know that when we really need help, it is there. Emergency Services Day is an opportunity for the country to say a huge heartfelt thank you to the two million people who put others before themselves. I encourage everybody to support our emergency services personnel all year round, not just on 999 Day.” Prime Minister Boris Johnson added: "“It takes a very special kind of person to put your life on the line for a complete stranger. Yet that is what we see day in, day out from the remarkable men and women of our emergency services.

“All of us in this country owe each of you a debt of gratitude. So, it is only right that, on Emergency Services Day, we celebrate your work and, as a nation, say a huge “thank you” for doing so much for so many.”

Three bus routes to go electric Camberwell garage installs more than 40 charging points

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Electric charging points have been installed at Camberwell bus garage, meaning three bus routes will now be electric-only, which should reduce air pollution in central London.

The 42 charging points will be used by buses on routes 100 (St Paul’s to Shadwell), 360 (Elephant and Castle to Albert Hall) and 484 (Denmark Hill to Lewisham).

They were installed by UK Power Networks and Go Ahead London, which runs the buses on behalf of Transport for London (TfL).

Irvine Nyamapfene, project manager at UK Power Networks, said: “By enabling more buses to run on electricity instead of diesel,

we bring another breath of fresh air for Londoners and we are pleased to be playing our part as the city looks forward to a greener future.”

Richard Harrington, director at GoAhead London, said: "As the capital's largest bus company, and the UK's biggest individual e-bus operator, we are at the forefront of zero-emission technology. Go-Ahead London and UK Power Networks have worked seamlessly to deliver electric bus infrastructure at the 107-year-old Camberwell Garage and, in the process, improve air quality for the local communities we serve on Routes 100, 360 and 484."

As of March this year there were 485 electric buses in London and 3,884 hybrids, out of a total of more than 9,000 buses in the fleet, according to a TfL audit.

Publishing company Ebony Life gave books to Elimhouse Community Association that ' reflect the richness of everyday African and Caribbean life from its people, culture to traditions', according to owner Tayo Idowu.

The donation also includes books that look back to the people, fashion and music of 'swinging 60s' Britain as well as other English traditions.

Centre manager and former Peckham councillor Aubyn Graham said: “The books are a brilliant idea in that they will help our users maintain and remember their culture. We’ll definitely be using them at the centre on a daily basis.”

Making your very own ‘superhero puppet

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Families supported by a Southwark charity took part in a fun and creative workshop that used puppets to help children focus on their strengths, not their weaknesses.

Camberwell-based St Giles, which helps families across the borough with problems relating to poverty, housing, gangs and substance misuse, took some of the children it works with to the event at the Pantry, the charity's food bank.

The aim of the workshop was for children to make table-top puppets of themselves to showcase their 'superpowers'. This encouraged children and their parents to think about what their superpower is, to help think positively about

themselves and focus on their strengths rather than their weaknesses.

Jessie Corp, a children's caseworker at St Giles, said: “The workshop was an amazing way for us to engage our families and to provide the children involved with a creative outlet, by creating their own personal superheroes they were able to analyze their own strengths and be supported in them.”

Nicola Holdren, who manages St Giles' children and families service, said that events like the puppet workshop offer children "a creative outlet and bring much needed joy and pleasure as well as some much needed creative escapism.”

The event was run the Little Angels theatre in Islington and was open to children from across London, Kent and Surrey between the ages of 5-11.

Police officers reunited with baby they delivered on the street Met Police officers who helped deliver a baby on the streets of Southwark last month have visited the family for the first time, with the new mother saying she would remember them for the rest of her life.

Police constables (PCs) Mia Kerr and Tom Palmer were on regular patrols on Friday, August 20 when the father-to-be frantically asked them for help, with his partner Martina going into labour on the street. A kind passer-by was also helping them.

Jumping for joy, after mum’s recovery

A south-east London woman has undertaken a charity abseil to raise money for St Thomas' hospital, where her mother made a "miraculous" recovery after suffering a heart attack and two strokes last year.

Natasha Barreto's mother Judy, who runs a hair salon in Welling, had to be placed into an induced coma earlier this year and spent two weeks in St Thomas' intensive care unit.

Natasha, 34, and three other family members abseiled off St Thomas' last Saturday, September 11, as part of a £2,000 fundraising effort. They have raised more than half that so far.

She said: “Mum was extremely ill. She spent six weeks in intensive care and a further two weeks at St Thomas’. As a family we were absolutely heartbroken, but as each day passed, we were so comforted watching all of the incredible staff take such good care of mum.

“We will never forget their endless kindness and compassion during their long shifts away from their own families, especially throughout the night we were called to the hospital to say goodbye as they did not think mum would make it until the morning.

“At a time when there is so much uncertainty, the ICU staff gave us peace of mind each day, knowing mum was safe in their hands. We will never be able to thank them enough for saving her and will be forever in their debt. Without their care, mum wouldn’t be here.”

While in St Thomas' Judy was put onto a machine that helped

her breathe properly, called extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

One of Judy’s doctors was Dr Chris Meadows, intensive care, anaesthesia and ECMO consultant at Guy’s and St Thomas’, who had also recently taken part in a charity abseil.

Natasha said: “All of mum’s consultants were incredible, and mum made a miraculous turnaround while she was under Dr Meadows’ care. He gave her time, explained everything thoroughly to us and answered our long list of questions and concerns.”

Dr Meadows said before the abseil: “I’m delighted that Judy has recovered after being so unwell. I wish her and her family all the best for the future.

We’re grateful to them for taking part in the abseil, and hope they enjoy themselves. From experience I know the hardest bit is stepping off the top!”

Natasha said last week she and her family are looking forward to the challenge, adding: “As a family, we promised we would fundraise for the hospital, to thank them for saving mum. When we heard about the chance to abseil down the hospital, we couldn’t think of a better adventure.

“As the daredevil of the family, I’ve done bungee jumps and descended the Orbit in Stratford before, but this will be extra special, having my family by my side and below cheering us on.”

There were 450 people taking part in the St Thomas’ annual abseil challenge over two days this year – 10 and 11 September. This included

privacy from members of the public.

There was a complication with the birth, as the baby's umbilical cord was wrapped around its neck. PC Roberts, with help from ambulance workers on the phone, successfully unwrapped the cord and delivered the baby safely.

Officers needed something to tie the cord with and used the elastic from a face mask. The baby boy was wrapped up in a blanket and officers waited on the scene for ambulance workers to arrive and continue giving care.

New mother Martina said: “It was at the same time the scariest and most wonderful experience we ever had.

"The right lovely people happened to be there and we feel incredibly lucky. Their kindness made us so comfortable that I couldn't feel any fear and we honestly have no words to thank them enough.

"Our family will remember them for the rest of our life.”

PC Kerr, from the Emergency Response Team in Southwark, said: "This was an overwhelming and incredible experience, being able to help such a beautiful family in their time of need. It was not what I expected when I started my shift that day, but I knew we needed to act quickly for the safety of both mother and baby. In the moment we kept focused on the task at hand so we could support them and help as much as possible."

PC Roberts, from the same team, said: “This was an unbelievable experience. The team leapt into action without hesitation when they realised what was going on.

"We’re used to dealing with emergencies and the unexpected, but this did take us a little by surprise.

It’s been so lovely to see how the family have been getting on. It was a privilege to deliver their baby and it’s something I will never forget.”

Cathedral hosts sculpture exhibit that pays tribute to our NHS staff A major public artwork created to thank NHS workers for their work in the pandemic is now on display at Southwark Cathedral.

Gratitude, a series of 51 sculptures by different artists from around the UK, was curated by Southwark's own Dame Zandra Rhodes, who founded Bermondsey's Fashion and Textile Museum.

The sculptures are on the last leg of a UK tour and will be available to view free of charge in the cathedral until October 10.

They will be auctioned off to raise money for NHS Charities Together on October 12. Each sculpture has an asking price of £1,000.

The installation also shares real-life stories and poems about NHS staff and other key workers, which have been recorded by actors including Hugh Bonneville, Christopher Eccleston and Julie Hesmondhalgh.

The artwork was coordinated by Wild in Art, the company that also managed the mascot trail for the London Olympics in 2012.

Campaigners protest against fifteen storey hotel going up at the elephant

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A group of Elephant & Castle campaigners want to prevent a fifteen-storey “boutique hotel” being built by an offshore developer right next to a children’s park.

Developers Create REIT have submitted plans for the hotel at 21 St George’s Road, close to the Elephant & Castle roundabout. The 89-bedroom building would also include a restaurant and office space, as well as a shopping kiosk.

The site is in the West Square Character Area, a zone set out by Southwark Council in its planning document for Elephant & Castle in 2012. The document lists the council’s strategy for the predominantly low-rise area, including the following points: • Ensure that development conserves or enhances the character and appearance of the West Square conservation area and the proposed Elliott’s Row conservation area and their settings • Maintain and improve the existing open spaces • Maintain the area as a predominantly residential area The proposed hotel is just outside the Elliot’s Row conservation area and near the West Square conservation area, but because it is in the broader ‘character area’ it should still aim to keep to these guidelines, according to the 2012 council document.

The document added that new developments should [maintain] the established or historic building line…’, which is mostly between two and four storeys across the two conservation areas.

The developers say that the building

would create a bridge between the swath of taller buildings around the Elephant & Castle roundabout and the smaller buildings on St George’s Road.

Because of the height of the proposed block, the campaigners, who call themselves Stop St George’s Tower, are also worried about the potential overshadowing on existing nearby housing, a loss of privacy for people who could have hotel rooms across from their bedroom windows, and the effect on the park.

The developers said that there will be no “significant sunlight loss” for buildings on nearby streets and that the gap between the hotel and nearby buildings is “well beyond” overlooking distances.

Other concerns include increased traffic to the area. Create REIT said that visitors will mostly take public transport.

Campaigners say that the consultation has been ineffective and failed to take into account the anxieties of local residents about the new building. The developers said they held seven meetings with residents, councillors and the campaigners and sent out two sets of updates on the plans in February and May this year, giving a chance to provide feedback.

Create REIT said feedback was “largely positive”.

Locals also raised concerns about the offshore developers themselves. Create REIT has no website and appears to be registered as a company in Guernsey. A spokesperson said that the developer is based in Southwark and has several properties in the borough.

They added that the proposals were “a valuable addition to the area”, were “the product of more than twelve months of careful design” undertaken

to ensure the building “does not impact on the local conservation areas and steps down from the heights within the town centre.”

The spokesperson went on: “Through our discussions with local groups, including members of Stop St George’s Tower, we have demonstrated that their concerns have been addressed through the design of the building.

“With regards to overlooking and sunlight impacts, the streets they raise concerns regarding sit more than 40 metres from the site, and in the case of Hayles Street and Prospect House more than 80m and 100m respectively.

These distances far exceed [typical] separation distances on standard London streets, let alone the local streets - which in some cases are as low as ten metres.

“None of the streets highlighted by Stop St George’s Towers will suffer

significant sunlight loss or overlooking as a result of proposals.

“The building sits outside of both local conservation areas and immediately next to the consented [London College of Communication] building which sits at more than twenty storeys with the even taller elements of Elephant and Castle beyond this...

“The proposed hotel will be less than 100 metres from Elephant and Castle tube station with visitors [overwhelmingly] arriving via public transport at this well-connected location.”

There have been 44 comments on the planning application, 42 of which object to the building. Two are in favour, citing the investment and employment in the area as benefits.

Comments are open on Southwark’s planning website under the reference 21/AP/2838.

Kate Shilton, from the Crown Prosecution Service, which brought the case against Butler, said: “Scott Butler was a registered NHS midwife who came into contact with young children every day in a London hospital. But unknown to anyone, he had a large collection of pornographic images of children as young as four years old.

“Butler was caught out after uploading images to a social networking website, which police were able to trace back to him. He was arrested while working. The prosecution case included evidence from a forensic analysis of Butler’s devices, which showed the extent of his interest in preadolescent children.

“Crimes against children are abhorrent and the CPS will always seek to bring to justice those who fuel the sexual exploitation of children.”

The CPS has applied for a sexual harm prevention order, which could prevent Butler from taking part in certain activities or work. The details of this will be set out at a further hearing.

South London midwife caught with stash of 400 indecent images of children avoids jail St George's Hospital

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Lambeth midwife has avoided prison after being caught with a large collection of child pornography - with some images of children as young as four.

Scott Butler, (DOB: 10/3/1982) who worked for the NHS at St George's Hospital in Tooting, was sentenced to twelve months in prison on Monday, September 13, at Inner London Crown Court, suspended for eighteen months.

Butler, 39, who came into contact with children every day at his job, was found to have more than 400 indecent images of male and female children between the ages of four and thirteen.

He has previously pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child and two counts of possessing extreme pornographic images.

Butler was arrested on December 3 2020 at work at St George’s Hospital.

His phone and laptop were seized from his home in Lambeth and found to contain around 360 indecent moving images of children and 77 still

Appeal to catch Chino’s killers

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A man who was shot dead while out socialising on Sunday evening has been named as Chino Johnson, with police urging anyone with any information on the killing to come forward.

Mr Johnson, 27, was with friends outside a property in Ferrey Mews in Brixton at about 9pm on Sunday, September 12, when two suspects rode up on a moped and opened fire on the group. Mr Johnson was among the people wounded, alongside two women aged 29 and 26.

Mr Johnson died soon afterwards, while the 29-year-old woman was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening. The second woman later took herself to hospital with minor injuries.

Police are calling for witnesses and for people who know the suspects to come forward to help them make the “vital breakthrough” in the investigation.

They are particularly interested in the light coloured moped, which is either white or silver and has a large black square box mounted on the rear and an L plate hanging down. Officers said it is either a Yamaha NX or a model that looks similar.

Tunstall, from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command, said: “My thoughts are with Chino’s family who are having to come to terms with the impact of this senseless murder.

“I also recognise that such an incident will have shocked the local community.

I’d like to reassure them that specialist officers are actively investigating what took place on Sunday night and are determined to identify those involved.

“There will be people in this community who know those responsible for Chino’s murder. I would urge them to come forward, to speak to my team – in confidence – and to help us make that vital breakthrough in our investigation.

“In particular, I would like to hear from anyone who saw the moped we believe was used. Did you see it being driven with two people on either directly before or after 21:00hrs on Sunday?

Have you seen it discarded since or hidden somewhere in the local area?

“No piece of information is too small or insignificant. Please, make that call.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The new owners of the former offices of the Financial Times newspaper on the south side of Southwark Bridge have been given the go-ahead to begin a major refurbishment of the building, despite criticism from heritage campaigners.

One Southwark Bridge Road, a 1989 building held by the FT until 2019, is now owned by media and advertising giant WPP. It has been vacant since 2019.

WPP submitted plans to add an extra storey, extend the building and "enhance" the façade by adding a double glazing system and external fins to help with shading. The company

will also open up the area around the building to give people passing by on the Thames path greater access.

The plans were approved by Southwark Council's planning committee last week (September 7).

But campaign group the Twentieth Century society said in a letter to the planning application that it "objects to the application which will cause substantial harm to what should be considered a non-designated heritage asset. We would welcome a scheme which seeks to preserve more of the existing building’s overall form and character."

The letter added that the society "feels the proposed rooftop and infill extensions will drastically alter the character and appearance of the building. The building’s proportions

will be completely changed, its defining external features eliminated, and its overall size and bulkiness will increase."

The society added: "We consider the existing building to be distinguished and that it responds well to its historic environment, establishing a striking riverfront elevation while respecting the scale of its neighbouring buildings. While we are not opposed to refurbishing the existing building, [we] object to the scheme in its current form."

A report by Southwark Council planning officers submitted ahead of the meeting last week said: "The proposal would make efficient use of a substantial under-utilised site to deliver a high quality and sustainable development that accords with the Council’s aspirations for the area."

Campaign group EXEC appeals for parents and children to recognise the dangers of road collisions 931 injuries on Southwark roads

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A road safety group is calling for Southwark parents and school children to be more aware of the dangers posed by traffic as the new school year begins.

Last school year - from the start of September 2019 to the end of July 2020 - there were 931 injuries on Southwark roads, according to Transport for London (TfL) data. Some 40 of these were children under the age of fifteen.

Seventeen of those were pedestrians and five were cyclists. Five children were 'seriously' hurt, TfL found. That could mean problems like broken bones, severe cuts or burns.

The overall injury figures were down about seventeen per cent from the previous school year, when 1,123 people were hurt on the borough's roads, 51 of whom were children. Of these children, 23 were pedestrians and four were cyclists.

The London Road Safety Council

(LRSC) thinks the lower injury rate last year is likely to be down to the pandemic, when there were many fewer cars on the roads for several months in 2020. But a UCL study from April this year suggested that road accidents may be likely to rise after the pandemic, with some people less used to road travel and everyone encouraged to walk more.

The group has launched a campaign called 'It's a Jungle Out There' to coincide with the start of the school year to remind parents and children of the dangers of walking to school.

“As part of the ‘It’s a Jungle Out There’ campaign we want to encourage families across London to have the conversation about what the risks of the road are, and how to safely navigate their way to and from school. Our ultimate mission is to ensure that every child gets home safely each evening.”

‘I’m back in the Commons in person’

ne hundred years ago the West Lane war memorial was unveiled on the border of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe to commemorate the huge contribution and also losses experienced by Southwark families in the Great War.

The memorial was funded by the local community: individuals, churches and local businesses. Peek Freans led the efforts to ensure a permanent monument. The centenary of the war memorial will be officially recognised at 3pm on October 8th.

Sadly, as the News has covered, it was recently attacked by an, as yet, unidentified man. This is a criminal offence and I hope he is caught but the heat of the arson attack has damaged the granite.

This has never happened before and is shocking but I am working with the local community and businesses to raise funds for repairs.

The memorial now serves as a reminder of our community’s sacrifice in every conflict since the first world war and we owe a duty to

recognise the sacrifice made by all those who have served our country.

Sadly, the British Embassy guards in Kabul who protected our diplomats in Afghanistan were abandoned after the collapse of democracy and return of the Taliban. The UK had eighteen months to prepare to leave and the Foreign Office said in March that an alternative alliance would be formed if the US left before those who served the UK in Kabul and beyond could be evacuated. Ministers failed to broker such an alliance which led to the undignified final scramble to flee in the humiliating capitulation to the Taliban.

The guards were denied access to a flight due to Home Office bureaucracy.

Some may now have to pay the ultimate price for working for us previously. It worries me deeply that the current Government has isolated our country internationally and left us at increased risk as a result of the ISIS, Al-Qaeda and Daesh elements who backed the Taliban now being back in control in that country.

After eighteen months of disruption, parliament is also now back in person.

I can no longer join ‘virtually’ from my home off the Old Kent Road.

It has been good to see the commons' green benches again, but the return to Westminster has also been accompanied by more broken Tory manifesto promises.

Despite winning a massive majority in 2019, Boris Johnson has repeatedly betrayed the very people who trusted him. He said he would defend free TV licenses for pensioners. He said he would not cut our armed forces. He said he would maintain international aid spending to ensure ‘Global Britain’ was not just an empty slogan. And he promised there would be no tax rises. He has broken all these promises, raising taxes even on the frontline key workers who kept our country going throughout COVID. This tax rise will hit people at the same time the government cuts £86 a month from working people on Universal Credit. This cut will hit 8,000 people in our community, and I was shocked to learn from a meeting with local DWP reps that most people in Southwark have not even been told about the imminent loss. The Tories talk about ‘levelling up’ but cannot even level with the people whose income they are taking away.

ublic libraries are a win-win for people and planet. I have access to more books than I could ever possibly read, while sharing them saves on paper, ink and shipping fuel.

The idea has been extended beyond books to toys, clothes, bikes. At the Library of Things in Crystal Palace you can borrow tools, a sewing machine or an ice-cream maker. This summer, I rented a tent for a week and a high spec digital projector

for a day. Even if I could afford to buy a projector, I would only use it once in a blue moon. Surely the queen of decluttering, Marie Kondo, would approve of sharing?

Similarly, instead of taking on all the costs of motor insurance, parking and maintenance, car clubs allow you to borrow a vehicle as and when needed. That means fewer cars cluttering the street: research by the RAC shows that most private cars spend 95 per cent of the time parked.

Sharing schemes can provide quality way beyond an individual budget. Instead of consumer products that seem affordable but fall apart in days, a ‘library’ can invest in solid, ethically made items that can be maintained and easily repaired.

Repair is key. The ‘right to repair’ law brought in this year obliges manufacturers of washing machines, dishwashers and fridges to provide spare parts. The law needs to go further – in particular, to include smartphones and laptops. The vast

majority of electronic goods have ‘planned obsolescence’ built in.

They are literally designed to stop working, locking us into a cycle of upgrades that chew through the world’s supply of precious minerals and create mountains of waste.

More and more people want to get off this treadmill. The ‘repair café’ movement brings together people to fix everyday objects like phones, kettles and toasters; there are opportunities to learn skills in DIY, carpentry and upholstery at places like Southwark Adult Learning and the Goodlife Centre in London Bridge.

At the Remakery in Loughborough Junction, volunteers share expertise, workshop space and materials that would otherwise be wasted.

Public shared resources like libraries, parks, swimming pools and art galleries are part of what George Monbiot has described as ‘public luxury’: belonging to us all, they allow us to live with joy on a finite planet.

Letter to the editor Back in 2002 I had my first child, a boy who I named Luca. Several years later when my body and bank balance had recovered, I decided to make myself intentionally overcrowded by having another child. For the next nine years I shared my bedroom with my partner, my daughter, a fold up bike and occasionally, mice. On the plus side, this did rule out ever getting pregnant again, sharing a bedroom with a kid is pretty much the best form of contraception there is.

After reading the article, “Council threatened with Legal Action Over Overcrowding” 25/08/21. I felt disgusted. This man coming over to England, wanting a better life for him and his family, and somewhere affordable to live. Doesn’t it just want to make you throw up?

But seriously, here we are again focusing on individuals and families, wanting social housing, in order to pay an affordable rent, rather than raising questions about national and local government policies.

People are forced to apply for social housing because rents in London, as well as in many other UK cities, are so high. Does anyone out there seriously think this man could have made arrangements for his family by renting a three-bedroom house in London on one income? My partner and I could not afford this on two salaries. As for leaving London to find work and housing, why should he! We want these people to make our cappuccino in the morning and deliver our take outs, but heaven forbid they get to live in decent accommodation.

Furthermore, there seems to be no shortage of spacious, luxury apartments popping up all over the place, yet we are still seeing a paltry number of council homes built.

This family are not asking for a palace with a pool and a butler. They're not even after a beautiful three-bedroom house, with a walled garden within a ten-minute walk of London Bridge. They just want to have a home with a bedroom each and that they can afford, is that really too much to ask?

£16 million for Marie Curie refurbishment is really the least it will cost - it could be a lot more

T

he cost of making Marie Curie fire-safe and refurbishing the entire building after having to rip out ceilings and floors is expected to reach £12.2 million.

Adding in buying back leaseholder homes and relocation costs for tenants, a waking watch while the block still has residents in situ, and other fees, and we have a ballpark figure of around sixteen million - but this is still simply an early estimate.

It is also a rough idea of cost based on a report presented to this week’s cabinet meeting, which outlines how a more detailed budget will be presented in the autumn. It is also unclear how costs could rise if the project drags on longer than planned; with the most intrusive work on the building not starting until June 2022 earliest.

Surveys and feasibility studies have already been conducted by ENGIE and their own contractors. They reveal the scale of work needed and provide more detail on fire safety defects within the building. But what none of this explains is how the extent of the work required to make the block safe, rather than another death trap, has only just been realised.

To put the figures in context, when Peckham’s Ledbury Estate was discovered to be at risk of collapse in the event of a fire and gas explosion due to essential strengthening works never having taken place in the past, residents were offered a ballot on the estate’s future. Initially a refurbishment was planned, with £8 million set aside for each block. But subsequent more in depth surveys discovered that this was woefully inadequate and the budget spiralled to the point where demolition and rebuild was the only real financially viable option.

So far there has been no mention of full demolition for Marie Curie, but as past cases in the borough have shown - nothing can be entirely off the cards.

Whatever budget is agreed in October, it must ensure tenants who are forced to leave whether temporarily or permanently - get the housing they need; leaseholders who sell up are offered a fair deal; the work that takes place is value for money and to the highest standard; and that the council is held to account over exactly what it knew, and when, about fire safety in Marie Curie.

What Larks In Rotherhithe

In a small Rotherhithe graveyard connected to the mortuary where mist off the Thames crept between the tilting gravestones, a ship’s bell tolled and a distant foghorn warned of worse to come, writes Michael Holland...

Or it might have done 200 years ago, but tonight the small Rotherhithe graveyard connected to the former mortuary is the setting and stage for Phil Willmott’s version of Dickens’ Great Expectations.

And what a perfect setting it is because most of the surrounding buildings were here when Dickens wrote of Bill Sikes coming to a grisly end just up the road. The gravestones are a little harder to read these days and the stench of rotting bodies has been swapped for the fresh air of community spirit in the HQ of Time & Talents, one of the area’s best loved charities.

The saga of Pip Gargery is played out with gusto on a traverse stage beneath a gazebo by an energetic troupe, starting with a 7-year-old Pip confronted by Magwitch on the marshes as the remaining players become the howling wind and other noises of the night. In fact, the sound effects were excellent throughout the

evening: the blacksmith hammering away at his anvil, the clump, clump of boots up stairs, the glug, glug gurgling of brandy poured, and the chinking of glasses for genial toasts all created behind the gazebo wall by anyone who wasn’t required on stage. I thought the flash of lightning and boom of thunder was most impressive until I realised there actually was a storm raging beyond the action before our eyes.

Yes, it is a potted, whistle-stop tour of Pip’s life from orphan child to gentleman by means of a secret patron funding his education in London, but nothing is missed out. We feel the nastiness of his sister who complains, ‘I’ve never had this apron off since Ma died’, when husband Joe Gargery gives Pip a half-day holiday; the twisted heart of tragic Miss Haversham is bared for all to see as she has Estella entice Pip into their wicked world.

Orlick, ‘the shiftiest looking rogue’, snivels his way in and out of the story, and the imperious Jaggers, the Puppet Master of people’s lives for his own gain, casts his dark shadow over all.

Every time he spoke he sent shivers up spines – actors and audience.

Great Expectations is a complex story replete with many plots and twists but the arching narrative is that

ordinary working-class people are much better people than the rich who look down their noses at them; being a ‘gentleman’ takes more than money, it is in the way you treat others.Every one in the ensemble was perfect and it would be too difficult to pick anyone out for more praise than another. So, in alphabetical order, I praise you all for a wonderful evening of excellent entertainment: Will Forester, Gabriels Haastrup, Megan Henson, Danny Hetherington, Jan Olivia Hewitt, Mohit Mathur, Eddy Payne, Jan Shepherd, Robert Vernon, Beatrice Vincent, I salute you.

Phil Willmott has pretty much dedicated his life to ensuring theatre survives the Covid pandemic in Rotherhithe by putting on great plays for free or pay what you can, so I implore locals to go along and support his mission. You will not be disappointed. In the words of Joe Gargery, ‘What larks!’

Playwright: ‘Anything is possible if you think about it hard enough’ Playwright Cordelia O’Neill was born in Peckham until, aged five, her parents moved to the countryside. ‘I moved back to London in my twenties and haven’t left,’ she tells me, adding, ‘I could think of nowhere else I would rather live; the diversity, the culture, the different lives that have trodden the city make it a very hard place to leave. I love London, it really is my home.’ Cordelia will soon have her fifth play produced at Southwark Playhouse, writes Michael Holland...

Theatre has been in Cordelia’s blood all her life, so it is very important to her.

‘It demands more of our brain than other forms of entertainment, it demands our full attention, the reactions and emotions you feel are instant. I always leave theatres feeling a little wiser,’ she says forcefully in case I was thinking about suggesting an opposing view.

And there is a family connection - Her uncle was the director James Menzies Kitchin, who died tragically aged 27. ‘I am now a trustee to the charity that was set up in his name, the JMK trust’ she says.

When at drama school Cordelia was given an exercise to write monologues and then perform them. ‘My teacher at the time suggested I keep writing, and so,’ she smiles, ‘five plays later, here I am.’

But like so many creatives who have that worry of being found out, Cordelia is the same: ‘Every time a play of mine

goes on I always think it will be the last.

So far, I haven’t had a last, (touching all the wood) so I suppose I never think of myself as a writer. Not in the way we think of a ‘writer’. It’s a romantic idea, one that I wish I could manifest, but in reality, I do a lot of teaching, a lot of parenting and not enough writing. When I get a couple of free days in a row I will head to my favourite coffee shop and spend all day writing, and in those moments, I feel like a writer and it’s heavenly.’

I pressed for more. And got it. ‘It’s not easy, every time I begin writing I think, this is it, this is what will show me as the fraud I am, I won’t be able to do it. But somehow, every time I get there… It’s the hardest thing, but it’s addictive and when I begin to create a world with people in it, I feel I owe it to them to finish and persevere.’

Cordelia wrote her latest play, Anything Is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough, after supporting her friend through a difficult pregnancy. She pauses for a moment. ‘The thought of anything happening to the baby sent me on a deep, dark Google search where I uncovered so much I didn’t know about pregnancy, about birth and about baby loss. I wanted to write a play that helped us understand the subject more and hopefully help those we know and love who are struggling.’

I asked if it was difficult to write. ‘It came quite easily at first, then, after the birth of my first daughter, I struggled. I think, knowing what it was that I could lose, and the weight

of the grief that parents have when they do lose a baby, stopped me from being able to connect as easily; my mind just didn’t want to go there.’

How did you get through that barrier?

‘In many ways that struggle made the play better and my connection deeper. It’s an important story because it’s a story that is not normally told because of the tragedy of the topic, so I had to do what I ask my audience to do, which is get through the sadness of it, persevere and understand the characters of Alex and Rupert in order to tell the most truthful and honest story I could.’

Will audiences be able to get through that barrier? ‘I think, if anything, the last year has taught us how resilient we are. To those who are worried about the subject matter, I urge you to come. Us humans have the wonderful ability of empathy and heading to the theatre and seeing a play like Anything Is Possible If You Think About It Hard Enough, is an opportunity to put that ability into practise.

So many mothers and fathers are affected by baby loss and are often suffering in silence, this play and you coming to watch it is stopping that silence and hopefully making someone’s grief a little lighter.

I’m definitely going to be there.

clubland’s reverend james butterworth just 4 feet 11 inches tall, but a giant of a man While all those nominated for a Southwark Blue Plaque deserve recognition, the Reverend James ‘Jimmy’ Butterworth is a prime contender.

Unfortunately a recent application by local group the Walworth Society for an English Heritage Blue Plaque to honour him has been unsuccessful, as his profile does not quite meet their strict criteria, but it is hoped that a Southwark Blue Plaque would go some way to make up for this.

The diminutive ‘Jimmy’ Butterworth stood only 4 feet 11 inches tall, but he was, in many ways, a giant of a man. Although he finished his service at his pioneering youth group Clubland in 1978, he is still fondly remembered by many in Walworth and beyond. If a plaque could be fitted near the iconic entrance to Clubland next year, it would be particularly significant as it would mark the 100th anniversary of his coming to Walworth.

Arriving as a probationary minister in the summer of 1922, he found the old Walworth Methodist Church in a very sorry state. The building was dilapidated and the congregation diminishing but these were minor inconveniences compared to what he witnessed in the streets around.

Walworth was at this time, very poor and extremely crowded.

Still only 25 years old himself, Jimmy quickly made his mark.

Starting with a Bible class of just six local boys, his enthusiasm and compassion quickly attracted more.

Soon his youth club expanded into the disused basement of the church.

Yet Jimmy was not one to make do with second best and he embarked on a mission to develop what would become Clubland.

In his opinion, nothing was too good for the young people of Walworth, and with remarkable energy and vision, he launched himself into a major fundraising campaign to enable him to build a new base for his activities. Designed by the famous architect Sir Edward Maufe, the magnificent new Clubland Church was officially opened on October 1 1929. For its time, it was state of the art. Apart from a new church, it boasted meeting rooms, studios, kitchens, games rooms, workshops and even a roof playground.

This was not just another boys’ club; the amenities were superb and of the highest quality. Clubland’s girls' club had been formed in 1925, and perhaps progressively for the period, they enjoyed similar facilities, also built to the highest standards.

Mary. Sadly, it was not to last long, as less than two years later, parts of the building were severely damaged by incendiary bombs on the night of May 10 1941.

It is testament to the loyalty of the members that they valiantly attempted to put out the flames to save their club, until ordered away by the police. This could have proved the end of Clubland, but the indomitable Jimmy was not one to let such a setback destroy his vision.

Once again, he used his fantastic ability to raise money from the great and the good to support his vision. Post-war Britain was a time of austerity, but Jimmy had managed to raise enough money to rebuild

Clubland by 1964, this time opened by the Queen Mother. This is the building which still stands today.

Using his personality, charisma and charm, Jimmy was able to forge links with a variety of wealthy people and get them to donate money to build and then rebuild Clubland.

Memorial stones in the courtyard of the present-day building show the amazing variety of people who supported Clubland, from film stars like John Mills, Vivien Leigh and Laurence Oliver, to world famous comedian Bob Hope, future US politician Robert Kennedy and many others. Jimmy tirelessly worked to raise money, not for any personal gain but because he knew that

without this support, Clubland could not exist.

Another of his qualities was his ability to engage with the young people in an egalitarian and democratic manner. While other organisations like the Scouts or Boys’ Brigades had strict hierarchical structures, overseen by adults in positions of authority, Butterworth encouraged the members of his club to take a full and active part in its running.

Self-governing ‘Parliaments’ were formed, and interestingly, all members had to pay a subscription fee and take part in fundraising activities.

Though many of the members may have struggled, the

sacrifices they made to find this money meant that they were more invested in the club, and as Jimmy himself would say, they would be ‘partners not passengers’. His approach to youth work was quite radical at the time and people came from far and wide to observe and learn from his methods.

While the work done by Jimmy at Clubland was remarkable, this type of project was not unique in south-east London. Such was the deprivation found there, Walworth acted as a magnet to many different churches and charitable bodies, who were drawn into the vicinity to engage in work to alleviate the suffering and poor conditions they encountered.

The university settlement movement was active with Pembroke and Cambridge Houses establishing missions. Likewise, public schools like Wellington College and Dulwich College had also operated clubs and missions in Walworth.

However, what set Jimmy apart from the type of workers associated with the settlement movement was that he himself had come from humble roots and had much in common with the community in which he lived and worked.

Born into a poor family in Lancashire in 1897, Jimmy was a bright boy but through financial necessity was sent to work in a bleaching works at the age of twelve. At the age of thirteen, his father took his own life and Jimmy took on the role of the head of family, working hard to support his mother and siblings. While those people who worked with the other social service groups did admirable work, their middle class upbringings perhaps meant that they did not fully comprehend the experience of the communities they worked in.

Butterworth had first-hand knowledge of hardship, loss and adversity which served him well throughout his ministry.

Much has been written about the work carried out in the club, from the holidays to Guernsey to Michael Caines debut on the stage at Clubland. It has variously been described as ‘The Temple of Youth’ or ‘a finishing school for working boys and girls’ but, whatever we call it, Clubland was an inspiration for many young people from Walworth and surrounding areas.

It is impossible to quantify just how much of a positive impact it had over the half a century Clubland operated, but we can say with great certainty, that the Reverend James ‘Jimmy’ Butterworth was the driving force behind it and that he deserves to be recognised with a Southwark Blue Plaque.

By Jeremy Blackmore sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY SAW their opponents Northamptonshire register their highest-ever successful run chase against them in first-class cricket as they lost by two wickets in their LV= Insurance County Championship clash at Wantage Road last weekend.

Northamptonshire’s Rob Keogh hit 99 until he fell agonisingly short of a well-deserved century shortly after lunch. Luke Procter, who hit a gutsy half-century, then combined with skipper Adam Rossington to bring the runs required down below 50.

The pair were parted when Surrey took the new ball however and it was left to all-rounder Tom Taylor and debutant James Sales to hold their nerve and see Northamptonshire to the brink of victory. Taylor fell with two runs required before Simon Kerrigan hit the winning boundary.

A hostile Jordan Clark toiled hard on a flat surface taking five wickets to keep Surrey in the hunt but ultimately Northamptonshire were able to earn a famous victory.

Northamptonshire had needed another 214 at start of play while Surrey needed to take eight more wickets on a pitch that was becoming more docile.

Surrey’s seamers kept things tight early on, although it was a delivery from Clark which pitched outside leg stump which accounted for Emilio Gay who was unfortunate to be adjudged lbw for 50.

Keogh though continued to play confidently both in attack and defence, driving and cutting with exemplary timing.

He shared an 83-run stand with Procter who played the junior partner role at first but began to free his arms against the spinners, sweeping Amar Virdi over square leg and dispatching Cameron Steel through midwicket for another boundary.

Then spinner Georgia Davis, making effective use of the new ball, was the star of the Sparks attack as they bowled out the Charlotte Edwards Cup winners for 114 in just 31.3 overs.

IT’S OFTEN said in football that a single moment can be a catalyst for change. Jake Cooper’s winning header against Blackpool before the international break could be that moment for Millwall.

The Lions followed it up with last Saturday’s draw with West Brom.

Millwall created the better chances against a team aiming for a fifth

consecutive league win.

Gary Rowett’s side were wellorganised and resilient and the hosts certainly found it tough to break them down.

It was a scrappy first half. A number of long throws and crosses were sent into both sides’ boxes but there was little to trouble either goalkeeper. It was a tame effort from Billy Mitchell that forced the first save of the game from Baggies stopper Sam Johnstone.

Former West Ham man Grady Diangana responded for the Baggies, dragging a shot wide of the far post.

They were the only two efforts of note until first-half stoppage-time, when the hosts were awarded a questionable penalty. Maikel Kieftenbeld was penalised for fouling Diangana, the referee in no doubt as he pointed straight to the spot.

Tyler Burey set for November Pools return

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk TYLER BUREY will return to Hartlepool United in November if he has fully recovered from a hamstring tear.

Burey, 20, picked up the injury in his seventh game for the League Two side, after three goals and an assist in his first six outings.

He was nominated for League Two player of the month for August and Millwall manager Gary Rowett hinted if he continued that form he was in line to return in January to challenge for a place in the Lions’ team.

Burey initially joined Dave Challinor’s side until the next transfer window. That

deal could be extended if Burey overcomes the first real injury setback of his career.

“It’s disappointing because he had started so well,” Rowett said. “The loan was exactly panning out how we hoped it would, that he would go and have a really good impact, score some goals and then either potentially come back with us in really good form in January to add to our squad or stay out and enhance his reputation and get that really important playing time.

“We’re really disappointed that’s how it’s worked out but we’ll try and get him fit.

“As soon as we can we can hopefully get him back and he can play some games within the loan.”

Millwall player of the year award in the last two seasons and he proved why at this moment. Although the penalty from Karlan Grant was not the best, the clichéd good height for a goalkeeper, it was still a superb save from the Pole as he sprung to his right to bat the ball away and deny the former Charlton Athletic striker. Millwall got the grace from the footballing gods that perhaps they were due after a dubious call.

Valerien Ismael is known for not waiting around when it comes to making changes but it was a surprise when he took Diangana off at the break.

However, just four minutes into the second half the hosts took the lead.

Millwall’s main problem this season has been dealing with balls into the box and they let themselves down again.

who had remained forward from an earlier set-piece and he sent a looping header into the top corner out of Bialkowski’s reach.

If conceding those kinds of goals has been a recurring theme this campaign, at least so has been the ability to bounce back. Millwall had already come from behind to win three times this season, two of those games in the EFL Cup. They set about it here again but Murray Wallace somehow diverted a Scott Malone cross wide of the far post.

But the visitors didn’t have to wait too long and showed their own threat from balls into the opposition box.

It was almost an exact repeat of Jake Cooper’s winner against Blackpool, as a corner was half-cleared and Jed Wallace crossed from the right. This time it was Daniel Ballard on the end of it at the back post to loop a header over England goalkeeper Johnstone into the

opposite corner. It was the Northern Ireland international’s first goal for the Lions.

Millwall had a brilliant chance to go in front through debutant Sheyi Ojo. The on-loan Liverpool winger seized on a mistake by Semi Ajayi but Johnstone made himself big to block and Malone headed over from the rebound.

If Millwall can consistently perform like they did at The Hawthorns and get back to being that hard team to beat, they could soon be able to forget about a slow start to the league season.

MASON BENNETT knows exactly what it takes to get into the play-offs – and insisted it’s pointless not to have the same ambition this season with Millwall.

Bennett played up front for Derby against Aston Villa at Wembley in the 2019 Championship decider, when Frank Lampard’s side were beaten 2-1.

Millwall have been in the mix for the topsix places in the latter parts of three of the last four seasons, twice falling short with just two games left.

Another member of the Millwall squad, George Evans, was on the bench at Wembley that day.

In Scott Malone, Benik Afobe and Sheyi Ojo the Lions have players with Premier League experience.

Bart Bialkowski, Shaun Hutchinson and Jake Cooper have proven themselves to be among the best in their positions in the Championship. Jed Wallace is one of the outstanding players in the division and on his day George Saville is arguably as good as any midfielder at this level.

Daniel Ballard has been one of the best defenders in the Championship since his loan move from Arsenal and when you put it all together under a manager in Gary Rowett who also got Derby into the playoffs, in 2018, then it could add up to a topsix challenge.

“I don’t see why not,” Bennett said before the trip to Swansea on Wednesday. “I think every season that needs to be the aim, if it’s not then what’s the point in being a footballer?

“We should have a great chance but we’re only a few games in and we have to prove that we really mean business this year.

“We have to keep performing like we did last Saturday [against West Brom] and the game before that when we came back to beat Blackpool.

“We need to prove that we’re a great team that can do what’s necessary to win but also play nice football as well. We need a mixture of all that to get us going this season.

“But we’ve got a great squad this year, the gaffer and staff have done some really good recruitment. We shouldn’t look at teams like [West Brom] and think, ‘wow, what a squad they’ve got’, because we‘ve got a really good squad as well.

“We just need to prove it now.

“Since I’ve been here we’ve brought in six or seven signings and every single player brings different qualities to the team.

“We’re trying to push on this season and improve and I think the recruitment has been excellent based on the past careers of the players.

“But the aim of everyone is to improve and to get high up the table.”

Bennett was speaking to the News on Tuesday night from Millwall’s hotel in Swansea. It was another chance for the summer signings to get to know their new team-mates.

Bennett enjoys that bonding before away games and tries to relax as much as possible before switching on as soon as match-day arrives.

He explained: “What I like to do is get around the lads and have a good chat and share some old stories from back in the

“I like to relax. I don’t have any particular routines, I’m quite steady on that front.

I always bring my PlayStation to away games and try to switch off from it all.

“Come game-day then it’s full focus.

Sometimes it’s better if you’re not always switched on, it can get intense at times.

“Last year was so intense with the turnaround in games. This year it’s a bit more spread out but we’ve got a block of games now Saturday-WednesdaySaturday-Wednesday so I think anytime you can get to switch off and get away from it it’s good.

“I quite enjoy the away trips, it’s the social side of the game and gives you a chance to get to know people. I know the team quite well now but each day you learn more about each of your teammates. I enjoy that.”

Bennett, though, is keenly anticipating

the home game against Coventry this Saturday. After he missed the opening month of this campaign through injury, he hasn’t played in front of fans in SE16 since February 2020.

“I’m all for travelling away but of course I love playing at The Den with the fans,” he said.

“Even watching the games I was excited with them being back, though I was desperate to get back on the pitch.

“It’s been great, it really helps us especially away from home when you see the massive support that we get. There is that camaraderie within the club that gives you that ten, 20 per cent extra and a good feeling on the match-day.

“It’s great to have them back. The last time I played in front of fans at The Den was well before Covid so I’m really looking forward to it.

“It’s been the best part of eighteen

months since I’ve experienced it. It’s been a long time coming and I’m really excited about it.

“I was devastated after picking up a knock at Ipswich [in Millwall’s last game in pre-season] but it was a freak incident, it was a strange tackle and these things happen.

“I’m fortunate we have really good sports scientists and medical people to help me make a full recovery.

“I was delighted to get on the pitch last weekend.”

Bennett played arguably his best football in a Millwall shirt in the second half of last season, particularly after going up front.

Five of the six goals he scored in 2020-21 arrived from February.

The former England underage international can play as part of a twoman strike-force and anywhere in a front three or four.

He’s not bothered where boss Rowett picks him in the team.

“I started off as a striker and throughout my past four or five years it’s been a natural progression that I’ve been playing out wide just because of the strikers I’ve been playing with, I couldn’t quite make that jump in the forward line,” Bennett said.

“As long as I help the team and we get results I don’t really mind.

“I want to improve on last year. I got six goals but I’m aiming for double figures.

It’s about being confident in myself. Even when things aren’t going well, I just need to stay positive.

“My team believe in me and the staff believe in me, I just need to believe in myself.

“As long as I’m fit and fighting I’ll always try to do my best. Double figures and a few more assists this year would be nice.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk YOU COULD forgive the Millwall players for choosing their words a little carefully ahead of the meeting with Coventry City at The Den this Saturday.

The Lions went to St Andrew’s in the last game of last season after beating Bristol City 4-1 at home.

Bartosz Bialkowski, not unfairly, suggested the Robins had been metaphorically on the beach as they had little to play for with their Championship status secured.

But those words came back like a slap in the face with a wet fish for the Millwall goalkeeper as Gary Rowett’s visitors were spanked 6-1, Coventry completing the league double over their rivals last season.

The result meant Millwall missed out on consecutive top-ten finishes in the Championship for the first time since 2005, as Mark Robins’ Sky Blues finished sixteenth in their first season back in the second tier.

The Lions have conceded the first goal in four of their five home games this season but won’t want to give Coventry a head-start at the weekend given how confident their opponents have looked.

They are back at their home ground – these days dully-named the Coventry Building Society Arena – after two years ground sharing with Birmingham City.

The Lions lost twice to promoted Coventry last season Before Coventry hosted Cardiff on Wednesday (after the News had gone to press) they were eighth in the table, level on points with sixth-place QPR, six points ahead of Millwall before the Lions played Swansea.

Robins targeted Championship experience in the summer transfer window, bringing in forward Martyn Waghorn from Derby, goalkeeper Simon Moore from Sheffield United, and defenders Todd Kane from QPR and Jake Clarke-Salter – who has scored against Millwall for Birmingham – on loan from Chelsea.

Gyökeres, a permanent signing from Brighton in the summer after a successful loan spell with Coventry last season, had scored three goals in six league games ahead of their meeting with Cardiff.

Jed Wallace said in a recent podcast that he would prefer Millwall to go for it in games when they are drawing and lose rather than play it safe. Coventry are an example. Robins’ side tend to play with all-or-nothing abandon.

Before the midweek games they had drawn just one of their previous sixteen contests in all competitions.

But Millwall have improved recently and have lost just once in five games at home this season, to a Fulham side that look too powerful and skilful to spend more than one campaign in their current stint in the Championship.

Lions will be ‘sensible’ with vice-captain

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk SHAUN HUTCHINSON has a chance to feature against Coventry City at The Den on Saturday but boss Gary Rowett stressed the need to make a “sensible” decision on whether to include the Lions’ vice-captain.

Hutchinson, 30, has been out with a quad injury he picked up in the second game of the season, the 2-1 win at home to Portsmouth in the first round of the EFL Cup on August 10.

Hutchinson resumed training this week ahead of the meeting with the Sky Blues.

“I think he’ll have a chance, whether or not we think he can start after three or four days training would probably

be a little bit ambitious,” Rowett said.

“Anyone who’s been out injured for a little while, of course you want them to be back available but you also want them to stay available. We have to look at that and make a sensible decision.

“Realistically, taking some part in the Leicester game might be more sensible. We’ll have a look at him in training over the next few days and see how he does.”

Benik Afobe (knee) and George Evans (groin) are also currently sidelined.

Rowett said: “We’re probably looking at after the weekend for both of them to resume training. But that will depend on how they go in the next three or four days.”

Afobe and Evans were the fifth and sixth first-team players to pick up injuries this season causing them to

miss more than one game.

Rowett was asked if there is a specific reason for the problems.

He said: “You look at everything, the new surface at The Den, the training ground, but I don’t think there’s any real pattern that’s developed. They’re all quite different.

“We’ve had a quad injury, we’ve had two groin injuries, a knee injury.

They’re all very different rather than being a specific pattern.

“It’s frustrating that we just seem to get some players back and when that happens we then lose some players as well.

“It’s not an ideal situation but it’s one we’ve got to make the best of and try to get through. If we do have a full squad available then I think we’ll start to see real improvement.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MASON BENNETT is back in action – and hoping to reform the Dynamic Duo combination and terrorise Championship defences this season.

Bennett and fellow speedster Jed Wallace were pushed up front together last season after an injury crisis left Millwall without an out-and-out centre-forward.

But that forced reshuffle after the turn of the year worked brilliantly as the pair immediately hit it off.

They first played together as a front duo at Barnsley last February, and though the Lions lost Bennett scored.

They then frightened a Derby

defence in a 1-0 away win before both scored in a 3-2 defeat at QPR, the Lions defence failing to keep up their end of the bargain.

They have an understanding that when one drops deep the other sprints forward to stretch the opposition defence and they regularly find each other with passes.

Bennett was pleased Wallace went nowhere in the summer.

“He’s a massive player for us,” Bennett said. “He has been for the last couple of seasons and before I signed for the club.

“I see the impact he makes every day and his commitment levels are unquestionable.

“It was never in doubt that Jed would be fully focused and committed.

“But, nevertheless, nobody wants to lose games in that manner so we’ll be looking to rectify that on Saturday against a very confident Coventry side.”

Wallace, 27, has picked up where he left off last season with three goals and two assists in six league games (before the Championship clash with Swansea on Wednesday evening).

Brentford, Crystal Palace and Newcastle have been credited with interest, as have Scottish Premiership giants Celtic and Rangers.

Wallace is into the last ten months of his contract in his third spell with Millwall following two previous loan moves.

The former Portsmouth and Wolves attacker had discussions over a new deal earlier this year but so far no agreement has been reached.

The last Millwall first-team player to run down his contract was Lee Gregory in 2019 when he joined Stoke City on a free transfer.

Wallace will be 28 at the end of this season with arguably just one more chance for a big move.

If Wallace remains beyond the January transfer window a lot could depend on Millwall’s season. Wallace has made no secret of his desire to help the Lions into the Premier League.

Millwall have had two eighth-place finishes in the last four seasons and were eleventh in 2020-21 in another Covid-affected campaign.

They are trying to bridge the gap to the play-offs, which is their best chance of just a second-ever promotion to the top flight.

Wallace will be in even more demand if he continues his excellent start to the season.
