mps at loggerheads with government over Afghanistan crisis

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Neil Coyle left Dominic Raab squirming last week as MPs grilled the foreign secretary on the UK’s shambolic exit from Afghanistan.

Raab, who had been on holiday in Greece as Kabul fell, admitted under questioning from the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP that Afghan British Embassy guards had not made it to the safety of the UK. In one cringeworthy exchange during the foreign affairs select committee meeting, Raab was left telling Coyle “you can browbeat me all you like” after the Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP chastised him for attempting to evade his question on how many had been rescued. “Can you tell us today whether the Afghan guards at the British Embassy in Kabul have been evacuated or not? They were held up due to paperwork problems. Are they here?”

Coyle demanded.

Attempting to dodge the paperwork issue, Raab claimed that arranged transport for those the government aimed to rescue had been turned back at checkpoints before reaching Kabul airport. Although he did elaborate on numbers, he admitted that the government had wanted to rescue ‘some’ of the staff. It has since been reported that just one of 25 workers, employed by contractors, made it to the UK after being promised help.

Although the foreign secretary has blamed failures in intelligence for how the insurgents blindsided the UK and the USA governments, at the select committee meeting chair Tom

Tugendhat - a lieutenant colonel and Afghan war veteran - referenced a foreign office report from July this year warning of the Taliban’s ‘rapid advances’ across the country.

Meanwhile, Southwark MPs said the shambles had continued as they attempted to help desperate families waiting for news from loved ones. Around eighty members of Southwark’s Afghan community had come together in the final days of the evacuation at the end of August for prayer and support at a vigil held at Camberwell’s St Giles Church, hosted by Dulwich and West Norwood MP Helen Hayes, Southwark Council deputy leader Jasmine Ali and councillor Alice Macdonald.

Hayes said her team had been working ‘flat out’ to try to get people out of Kabul in the run up to the deadline, but delays and lack of support from the government had left her fearing for their safety. Constituents with family trapped in the country include one family with a ‘very sick child’, ‘people hiding in fear for their lives’ and ‘women who can’t leave home under the Taliban without a male escort’. She described their testimonies of what is happening in the country as ‘chilling and heartbreaking’.

During Monday’s parliamentary debate on Afghanistan, Hayes asked the prime minister: “Many of my constituents have family members in Afghanistan who could be eligible for asylum in the UK under more than one route—for example,

by ARAP [Afghans relocations and assistance policy], under the Foreign Office special cases criteria, or under family reunion.

“Yet there is currently no coordination between departments. My constituents are being passed from pillar to post. ARAP is refusing cases where

there may be an alternative route, and the foreign secretary and the home secretary are not replying to their emails.

“When will the prime minister sort out this lack of coordination across his government?”

Boris Johnson told MPs in response: “I must reject that in the strongest possible terms.

“The house has paid tribute, quite rightly, to the work of the armed services over the last few weeks and months, but it should also pay tribute to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s rapid reaction team who went to Afghanistan, and to the Border Force officials who went out there, who worked hand in glove to help thousands of people come to this country in safety.”

Harriet Harman has said out of 41 people in her constituency who applied to the government for 275 relatives to be brought to the UK, only one person has been able to escape so far.

During Monday’s debate she warned that unless the government upped its current cap of 5,000 people eligible for the Afghan citizen resettlement scheme it would become a ‘lottery of life and death’ for those who - despite not working directly for the UK government - were still at risk of reprisals.

Raab replied: “The number of people who flee Afghanistan is going to outstrip what the UK would be able to take alone,” saying the government was looking “very carefully” at the criteria and would be aiming to encourage other countries to do their bit.

“I will always be proud of what we achieved over the last decade: the physical improvements like new council homes, libraries and leisure centres but also the jobs and opportunities we created for local people to thrive.

“Supporting London through difficult times, particularly the summer of 2017, was one of the biggest challenges I have personally ever faced, but the way colleagues, local partners and residents pulled together in the face of adversity made me really proud, and showed just how resilient local government is.

“I don’t think there is a better, nor more rewarding job, than being chief executive of Southwark Council, and although it is the right time for me to leave, for me and my family, Southwark will remain in my heart forever.”

Council leader Kieron Williams paid tribute to his ‘outstanding’ colleague. “We will sorely miss Eleanor’s knowledge, verve, warmth and wisdom when she steps down as our chief executive, but after fifteen years of unwavering service to the people of Southwark, I understand her wish to take a step back from this demanding role,” he said.

Ms Kelly began her career in 1974 when she joined Corby Development Corporation as a trainee clerk – the most junior role in the organisation. She later moved into working for Corby’s district council before moving to London for a role at Islington Council.

After a stint in the private sector for KPMG she joined Tower Hamlets as director of finance and chief executive before joining Southwark.

She will remain in post until her replacement has been appointed in early 2022.

Southwark Council chief executive to retire after decade in the role

Eleanor Kelly first joined the local authority in September 2006 as interim deputy chief executive. She was promoted to interim chief executive in 2011 and took on the role permanently in 2012.

During her tenure as the council’s most senior officer Ms Kelly has been responsible for delivering the Southwark’s response to the 2017 terror attacks and fire safety issues in the aftermath of the Grenfell tragedy.

Last year she was seconded to the national vaccination programme to represent local authorities in the government’s pandemic

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An eight-year-old boy from Dulwich climbed Snowdon and raised more than £4,000 for Brain Tumour Research to find a cure for the disease which killed his father.

Oscar Moth, from West Dulwich, lost his dad Piers in March this year, just ten days before his eighth birthday.

Piers, a music teacher who was just 40 when he passed away, had been diagnosed with a brain tumour a decade earlier after suffering a seizure at a party; just three weeks after meeting his future wife, Laura.

He then spent three weeks in hospital, including in intensive care, before an inoperable tumour was discovered deep in his brain’s temporal lobe.

After undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Piers’ condition stabilised for eight years and in that time he became a father of three; to Oscar and his siblings Ella, seven, and Ottilie, aged two.

Two years ago doctors discovered that his tumour - an anaplastic astrocytoma had returned.

After his death, his bereaved wife, Laura, an NHS respiratory physiotherapist, decided to climb Snowdon with her son to help raise funds for research and a potential cure.

She said: “Oscar and I climbed Snowdon last week and were lucky that the weather was good – it was windy at the top, but clear and we could see for miles.

“We were accompanied by close friends,

“Piers was a musician and peripatetic music teacher, who never went anywhere without a recorder in his pocket, so it was very poignant when Felix pulled out a flute on the summit and played a tune in his honour.

“Music was so important to Piers that when I went to hospital to give birth to Oscar, Piers forgot my hospital bag, but still had his recorder!

“When he had big seizures at home and we had to call for the paramedics, Piers would play TV theme tunes to them and quiz them as to what they were.

“Piers was the absolute best daddy our family could wish for, providing wraparound care and school holiday cover while I worked full-time.

“He was brave and funny and the most kind and gentle soul. We all miss him more than you can imagine.

“I am so proud of Oscar. This is the first sponsored event he has done and the first time he has climbed a mountain.

“Before the COVID pandemic, he used to have weekly climbing lessons and always said he wanted to climb a mountain.

Since losing his daddy, he said he wanted to raise funds for research so that other families don’t lose a mummy or daddy, or anyone else they care about.”

angling club Help rescue woman from the dock Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Firefighters pulled a woman to safety from Canada Water Dock in a dramatic rescue on Saturday night (September 3) - with the help of the local fishing club.

Colin Clay, the chairman of the Surrey Docks Angling Club, was walking home from his usual rounds of clearing up the local waterways after 10pm on Saturday evening when he noticed a commotion by the dock, which is next to Canada Water Tube station.

Firefighters from three nearby fire stations, as well as two more from southwest London and north London, were on the scene, trying to pull a woman from the water. Two of the firefighters were in the water with her. There has been no confirmation as to how the woman ended up in the dock.

The surface of the water can seem warm, especially in good weather, but the dock is deep. A few feet underneath the surface the water rarely heats up meaning anyone enticed in can suffer a dangerous drop in body temperature.

"I’ve got a couple of new members in the club, and my first thought was there was an accident with one of them, but that wasn't the case," Colin said. He got closer and realised he could help the firefighters with the woman.

Colin took one of the firefighters round to get the boat the fishing club uses to clear up debris on the water. Using this boat he and the emergency services were eventually able to haul the woman out of the water. The whole gruelling episode took more than an hour and a half.

A man, who is thought to be the woman's boyfriend, had already been rescued by the time Colin arrived and was treated by ambulance crews. The woman was taken to hospital.

"It was a fairly stressful couple of hours," Colin said. "I don't feel like I saved this girl at all. I just happened to have the boat."

About eight members of the angling club were also at the scene and helped the emergency services however they could.

"We did well in a stressful situation," Colin said. "We did whatever we could to help - people just mucked in. They did it without even being asked. It was obviously not a good situation, but the response was good.

"I didn’t pay much attention to anything

else that was going on. I didn’t think about it much until yesterday afternoon when I saw some of the videos people filmed.

"I didn't even realise at the time how serious it was," he said. "It could have gone completely the other way."

He was full of praise for the firefighters who led the rescue. "They really did a fantastic job," he said.

This is the second time this summer that the angling club has helped save people who had fallen into the dock, he added. He asked people to be aware of the dangers of swimming in the water.

A spokesperson for the London Fire

Brigade said: "Firefighters rescued two people from the water at Canada Water on Surrey Quays Road in Southwark on Saturday.

"A fire rescue unit crew brought one woman to dry land. She was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service (LAS) crews.

"Firefighters also assisted a man to safety from the water...

"The Brigade was called at 2201 and the incident was over for firefighters by 2340. Three fire engines from Dockhead, Old Kent Road and New Cross fire stations and two fire rescue units from Battersea

and Edmonton fire stations were at the scene."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 10:07pm on 3 September to reports of an incident on Surrey Quays Road, Canada Water.

"We sent a number of resources to the scene including an ambulance crew, our hazardous area response teams (HART), a medic in a car and an incident response officer. We treated a woman at the scene and took her to hospital. We assessed a second person, a man, but he was not taken to hospital."

Medallist’s ‘humble’ life after Tokyo Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk After Columba Blango finished his first season as an international athlete with a Paralympic bronze medal and a European gold, he could be forgiven for thinking his life had changed completely.

But Columba, who is resting at his East Dulwich home after getting back from Tokyo last week, said he is going back to work at Primark in Peckham once his quarantine period is over.

“Nothing has changed, I’m still my humble self,” he told the News. “I’m not someone who changes. I’m always humble, I’m always grounded. Change [like winning medals] doesn’t affect me.”

Columba puts his humility down to continuous “spiritual growth”. He is a member of the congregation at Mustard Seed International Church in Nunhead.

“I usually use my Christian faith to keep me grounded. I grew up in a Christian household, the number one household rule is to be humble. Be the person you are because that will allow you to express yourself in full.”

Speaking earlier this year, Columba said his colleagues initially were not very aware of his athletics prowess. But now they are “really happy”.

“They are delighted with what I’ve achieved, with as far as I’ve taken my journey,” he said. “They’ve seen me grow.

They’re really happy with how far I come.”

A spokesperson for Primark said: “Columba has been part of the Primark family for over five years and we are so proud of his success at the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. This is such an extraordinary achievement and all our colleagues at Primark Peckham are excited to welcome him back.”

Columba, 29, came third in last Tuesday’s 400 metres race with a personal best of 47.81 seconds. This year was his first Paralympics. He was competing in the T20 category, for people with intellectual impairments.

Columba was in intensive care for about four weeks after being born, after suffering blood clots on his brain due to a difficult birth. He was left with speech and cognitive problems, and was unable to speak until the age of six.

He finished last week just a tenth of a second behind Luis Felipe Rodriguez Bolivar in second place. First place went to the Frenchman Charles-Antoine Kouakou, who crossed the line with a time of 47.63 seconds.

Columba described the result as a “relief”. “I was happy with the result,” he added.

“It’s a start. It was my first year of internationals. I’ll take it a step at a time.

You don’t know how things are going to happen, you have to take it in stages.”

He could be seen lying flat on his back after the race, leading some onlookers to speculate that he might be disappointed with a bronze, after winning the European

Championships two months earlier.

“I think it was the fact that I was really tired, and my work was done,” he said. “I achieved what I wanted for the season.”

As well as working in Primark, Columba said there is much more to come in his international athletics career. The main landmark on the horizon is next year’s world championships in Japan.

“That will be the main thing to focus on,” he said. “You’ve got to take it in stages, don’t rush the process. Medalling is one thing, maintaining the standards you’ve set for yourself over a long period is even harder. I’ve always said to myself that it’s not about winning, it’s how you play the game. You have to be happy with what you’ve done, as long as you’ve done your best. To come out with two international medals in your first season is something to be proud of.”

Denmark Hill Station reopens as the ‘first carbon positive’ upgrade to rail

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The newly upgraded Denmark Hill Station was officially opened last week by rail minister Chris Heaton-Harris.

Northern line extension opening

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Trains will start running regularly on the Northern line extension from Kennington to Battersea Power Station from September 20, according to Transport for London (TfL).

The transport agency is running six trains per hour at peak times on the extension, or a train every ten minutes.

This should increase to twelve trains by mid-2022. The service will have five trains per hour at off-peak times, doubling to ten next year.

Trial services have been running on the service, which goes via Nine Elms, on weekends since July. Work began on the extension, the first on the Underground this century, in 2015.

When trial services began it was hoped that the extension would open fully in

August but this was pushed back.

About 100 members of station staff are being trained to work with the two step-free Tube stations, and drivers are practising the new route.

Both Battersea Power Station and Nine Elms are in Zone 1. Kennington recently changed from Zone 1 to Zone 1 and 2 because of the extension, meaning that passengers should not have to pay more to travel to the new stations.

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said: "The two new stations at Nine Elms and Battersea Power Station are the first new stations on the Northern line for 80 years. They will hugely improve connectivity between these two areas and the rest of London, and play a major part in the capital's recovery from the pandemic by supporting thousands of new jobs, homes and businesses."

Twist condemns the disruption caused by Extinction Rebellion

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Extinction Rebellion protesters marched from Tate Modern across Millennium Bridge last Thursday afternoon,September 2, towards the City of London.

The environmental activists protested City financiers' investments in the fossil fuel industry all last week. On Monday and Tuesday, August 30 and 31, protesters managed to block Tower Bridge and London Bridge for several hours. Officers arrested dozens of activists.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Matt Twist said the protesters were overstepping the line of reasonable protest, and drew attention to the impact of moving officers away from violent crime in the capital to deal with the protests. He said: "Whatever the cause, activists do not have the right to cause unreasonable and serious disruption to London’s communities.

"They’ve blocked traffic on two of London’s busiest bridges, defaced iconic landmarks and disrupted critical road junctions. Commuters’ journeys have been delayed, businesses had deliveries cancelled and the owners of landmarks have faced costly repairs.

"This action is unfair, unreasonable and unlawful. To worsen matters, activists frustrate our response by setting up complex structures or by gluing and locking onto devices.

"We’ve fulfilled our duty by facilitating these protests, but where protesters have taken direct action and broken the law our response has been firm and, at times, direct...

"Every time several officers are needed to arrest a single activist, these are officers diverted from our number one priority, bearing down on violence. We are highly resilient but it is frustrating that communities are denied their officers in order to deal with a very protracted protest."

Described as the ‘first carbon positive’ upgrade to the rail network, the station has benefitted from £7.5 million of investment.

Along with a new station entrance improving access to both the Maudsley and King’s through a second entrance via Windsor Walk, the station has gained new public artwork showcasing Camberwell’s history and culture, more waiting facilities, sheltered platforms, cutting edge solar power, and secure cycle parking.

It is the first train station in Europe to be fitted with BIPVco's Flextron thin film solar technology.

Just 3mm thick and 3kg per m2, the flexible solar panels are highly advanced, self-cleaning, and

generate a high energy yield even shadow and shade A key aim of the improvements is to improve passenger flow and reduce congestion at the station; one of the UK’s busiest, and improve service reliability.

At the ribbon cutting, HeatonHarris said: "This upgrade transforms a Victorian station into a modern experience for passengers – cutting crowding, improving access, and introducing new space for cyclists and artwork.

“Making this new extension to Denmark Hill the first ‘carbon positive’ upgrade by utilising innovative solar technology also demonstrates our ambition to ensure our rail network is greener for passengers and better for our environment.”

Network Rail's southern region managing director, John Halsall, added: "The work we’ve done at Denmark Hill was ground-breaking in terms of upgrades to existing

Victorian infrastructure in many ways, fusing the modern with the old, and above all making it accessible and user-friendly for passengers.

“The new upgrade is highly sustainable, using solar energy solutions that actually produce more power than the station upgrade needs to run, so we can put power back to the grid.

“We’ve managed to complete this project on time and on budget despite the impact of COVID, and that’s testament to our relationship with Govia Thameslink Railway, the Camberwell Society, and the Salvation Army for lending us part of their site for the works.”

inquiry after man crushed to death in Waterloo

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Transport for London (TfL) bosses have been told to boost “incomplete” safety measures after a man fell into the curved gap between a Tube platform and a train and was crushed to death.

A new report by Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) into the fatal accident, which took place in May 2020, found that London Underground Limited (LUL), which runs the Tube as part of TfL, should carry out a risk assessment on every tightly curved platform on the network, update its risk modelling and make sure that investigations are followed up properly.

The report comes after an inquiry into the death of Jama Mohamed Warsame, 59, who was travelling home to east London on the morning of May 26 last year, after staying overnight in Lambeth.

He got off a Bakerloo line train at Waterloo at 10.10am and fell backwards into the large gap between the curved platform and the train.

Mr Warsame tried to get out for nearly a minute but was unable to. There was no one on the platform to help him, and the 1980s CCTV monitoring system the driver used to check for safety problems on the platform did not pick him up.

RAIB said that even a more modern monitoring system would have been “unlikely” to capture Mr Warsame.

The train he had been on left the station one minute and fifteen seconds after Mr Warsame fell into the gap, crushing him. He remained still after this and was hit by the next train to arrive, which came about one minute and 25 seconds after the first train left.

Three other passengers were on the platform at some point during the whole incident, but none appear to have seen Mr Warsame or heard any cries for help he may have made. CCTV in Waterloo’s central control room captured the whole incident but staff are not required to be continuously monitoring CCTV and there is no evidence that anyone working in the control room saw the incident, according to RAIB. Once Mr Warsame had eventually been discovered, police were called and arrived at 10.24, followed by the fire brigade and ambulance service a few minutes later.

RAIB made three recommendations following the death of Mr Warsame. The organisation said that TfL should carry out a risk assessment for tightly curved platforms and “other locations at which passengers are considered to be at particularly high risk”. This should focus on the safety of vulnerable passengers, as well as the gap between the platform and the train, and the ability of the driver to see the gap while preparing to set off.

The report added that TfL should update its risk modelling system to bring

it in line with good practice in the rail industry, and improve its management processes to make sure that it responds to formal investigations appropriately.

The transport union RMT, which has many Tube workers as members, hit out at TfL in the wake of the report.

General secretary Mick Lynch said: “This [is] a damning report that once again illustrates the importance of maintaining staffing levels on the basis of proper safety and risk assessments that must involve front line staff through their trade union.

“RMT safety reps will be raising this report with [London Underground] in our safety forums and demanding a clear programme of action to deal with the issues it addresses.”

A spokesperson for TfL said: “We extend our deepest sympathies to Mr Warsame’s family and would like to reassure customers that the safety of everyone on our network is always our top priority.

“We have considered the findings of the Rail Accident Investigation Branch’s report and have already started putting the recommended actions in place after carrying out our own internal investigation. We will ensure that we do all we can to prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again.”

The purpose of RAIB is only to prevent future accidents and improve safety - not to work out blame or carry out prosecutions.

‘Series of sex attacks’ reported

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A series of at least three sexual assaults in the Dulwich and Sydenham areas ‘may be linked’, say police.

Inspector Tom Cornish, from Southwark and Lambeth basic command unit, told the News this week that police were investigating three reported assaults, all in a small geographical area, the most recent of which occurred on August 22.

The victim, a woman, was targeted on the path between College Road and Crescent Wood Road at 6.50am.

The suspect made off on foot after she shouted at him.

The News has also been made aware of a similar report in early August, but as yet have received no further details from officers confirming the times and dates of other attacks.

On August 5, another woman told police she was chased by a man she saw touching himself while she was out running at 5.40am in the Sydenham Hill area. Fortunately she managed to escape before calling officers. The suspect was never found and the case was subsequently closed - it is unclear whether it will be reopened in light of the new attacks.

Free film festival returns

LCC students help Camberwell's Elevated Minds

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk London College of Communications students have donated their time and marketing expertise to a Camberwell-based organisation that helps children who have been excluded from mainstream education, are at risk of being excluded, or who are regularly absent.

The university students helped with photography and making free animations for Elevated Minds, a community interest company with a limited budget.

The initiative was part of Talent Works, which brings together local charities with students who can offer their time and resources. Nearly 100 organisations have so far benefitted from the scheme. They include Black Connection, a social network for Black queer men aged 50 and over, and Voades, a charity providing emotional support for Spanish and Portuguese

speakers, Doreen Sinclair-McCollin, founder and CEO of Elevated Minds, said: “The students talked us through each step of what they were doing. They knew our brief well and were able to provide examples of what we requested.

“They listened well and took onboard everything we said, telling us what would work and what wouldn’t and the reasons why.

“It was a great experience and we had a good connection with the students.

“We would like to work with the team again to produce future advertising resources, for example a banner and a standardised email signature for all employees, as well as mentoring for one of our creative young people to produce a company animation.”

Adeola Ogunsiji-Isaac, who is an undergraduate photography student at London College of Communication, said: “I don’t think I was expecting the client relationship to be as good as it was and I think because it was

community-based that was why it was so fun.”

Gill Henderson, Cultural and Communities Partnerships Manager at London College of Communication added: “In the context of a global pandemic, it has never been more important for grassroots community groups to develop their digital communications and how they present themselves online.

“This is why this year’s edition of the Talent Works programme has been particularly special for both students and groups.

“For most students this was their first opportunity to collaborate in person with students outside their course, to work on a professional brief and build relationships with clients.

“We could not be prouder of the work produced by the students over the course of these two weeks, and we look forward to seeing how the groups will continue to use these websites, platforms, designs and promotional videos going forward.”

Feminist Library awarded £63,400 for ‘herstories’ in south-east London

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Peckham-based Feminist Library has been awarded a £63,400 grant by The National Lottery Heritage Fund for a project collecting and promoting ‘herstories’ from across south-east London.

Running from this month until the end of August 2022, ‘Preserving and Promoting Herstories’ will involve hiring a new library assistant to catalogue and conserve more than 1,500 feminist periodical titles held at the library, while expanding its opening hours and providing more access for the public to its archive; one of the most extensive collections of its kind.

This work will also form the basis of the first large-scale digitalisation project at the library.

Throughout the year a range of talks, panels and workshops will also be held focused on local feminist history and the issues faced by communities in Peckham, where the library relocated in 2020.

The Library’s management collective said: “We are thrilled to have received this grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

“This project will allow us to give increased access to our unique material, both digitally and in our local area of south-east London.

“It is so important that collections like ours are being recognised as valuable parts of our heritage.”

Seven charities left confused as eviction looms this month

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Seven charities and community groups based in Burgess Park’s soon-to-be redeveloped Giraffe House including those who are part of the council’s own summer holiday provision - were left dismayed after being left in the dark over their future as their eviction notice loomed this month.

The site, which is due to be knocked down as part of the council’s plans for a skate bowl, was due to close up on September 17.

Southwark 1st Scouts leader Frances White told the News that for months she and other groups who use the building had been trying and failing to engage in dialogue with the Southwark Council about what happens next.

“Giraffe House was managed by the Creation Trust but that was coming to an end,” she said.

“We had hoped to stay and carry on in the building until it is due to be demolished, as that could be a long time yet and it would be empty for ages beforehand.

“We’ve had no information and it’s very difficult to find the kind of space we need as a lot of TRA halls need maintenance or don’t have secure outside space for activities or church halls need to charge what we can’t afford to pay.

“The seven groups based in Giraffe

House dovetail really well together.

We have Burgess Sports doing their holiday and summer camps and feeding kids, we have Silver Fit for older people and a Latino club and Community Cycle Works.

“We always knew we were on borrowed time but we thought there would be a natural extension on the lease and then an alternative.

“It is a busy time for the council so I’m just hoping it’s an oversight that they haven’t let us know what is going on.

“September 17 is due to be our last day. We’re not blaming anyone here - we’re here to serve our local community - not blame people for this situation.”

The group had set up a petition, called Save Our Space, calling for more support now term has started and the groups are still left in limbo.

Last Friday, with just days to go until the eviction, she received a letter from Southwark Council confirming the premises had been taken over by the charity Mentivity for an interim period and that “someone will be in contact before the start of September”. The letter was dated September 2.

As yet, she says, no one has made contact and it is unclear what the terms of their lease are - and if it has been extended or not.

On Wednesday morning, after being questioned by the News about the situation, councillor Catherine Rose, cabinet member for transport, parks

and sport at Tooley Street, admitted that not every group would be able to stay in the building.

“We have some really exciting plans for the space in the future, which continues to support sport and recreation for young people,” she said.

“This follows the success of other leisure opportunities in the area, such as the BMX track.

“Meanwhile, and following a tender process, Mentivity will now be managing the building’s use.

“They have spoken to all of their new sub-tenants and confirmed to the council that SE17 Working and Half Pints can be accommodated on their current terms.

“The BMX Club and Burgess Sports can be accommodated on the basis of a fee for use of the space – this would be paid to Mentivity and will contribute towards the running costs of the building.

“As these organisations will be subtenants of Mentivity, it is for them to agree terms with Mentivity rather than the council.

“There are a small number of groups that cannot continue to be based in Giraffe House, once Mentivity begin to deliver their programmes.

“As a council we value the work of all the groups that have been based in Giraffe House so far.

“Council officers are in touch with these organisations to support them to manage the changes and offer practical help them find alternative spaces.”

Pensioner who sexually abused boys in South London for over 40 years is jailed

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A ‘predatory and manipulative’ pensioner who sexually abused multiple victims across south London for more than four decades has been jailed for 30 years.

Seventy-three-year-old Nigel Clayton, from Sutton Common Road, appeared at Croydon Crown Court on Monday, September 6, where he was sentenced to 31 counts of sexual assault, rape and possessing indecent images, after being convicted at the same court in May. Clayton is known to have abused eight male victims between 1976 and 2017, one of whom was abused for more than 30 years.

The court heard the sickening crimes took place at various locations in south London, including Sutton and Croydon, even during a funeral. Clayton also used a car garage with a bed inside to carry out his assaults.

He targeted boys and young adults, persuading some of them to do odd jobs

for him in return for money, offering gifts, holding debts over them, making threats or using physical force. He also lied about being a doctor, claimed he knew about child development and also claimed he knew about modelling in his attempts to access vulnerable victims and justify the abuse.

An investigation launched in 2016 after a victim first reported the abuse to police in 2016, leading to seven other victims being identified and Clayton’s arrest in February 2020.

Detective Constable Candice Burley said: “Clayton is a predatory and manipulative individual who specifically targeted victims he knew to be vulnerable; engineering situations which afforded him close contact with them in order to carry out his abuse.

“One victim was under his control for more than 30 years, suffering regular sexual assaults.

“The long term effect of such prolonged abuse is difficult to comprehend.

“I extend my utmost respect and thanks to all of the victims for their courage in speaking

up and ensuring Clayton was brought to justice for his heinous crimes.

“It is of course possible there are further victims out there and I would urge anyone with information to come forward.

“You will be supported by specially trained officers who, as this conviction shows, are committed to the investigation of sexual offences and ensuring those responsible are held accountable.”

Estate overun by rats and mice for months

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Southwark estate is still suffering from an infestation of mice and rats, residents say, months after the problem was first reported.

Southwark Council is trying to tackle the issue, which we first reported on in May, and has sent out pest control teams to the Dodson and Amigo estate near Blackfriars Road on several occasions.

But residents in at least two of the blocks on the estate are still finding mice and rats on their property, as well as in the communal grassy areas. Images recently shared with the News show a rat caught in a trap, as well as what appears to be a disembowelled rat on the estate’s lawn.

Jacquie Gilmartin, who lives on the estate, said: “All the blocks need to be done. It’s not going away. Why are we still finding mice and rats in our homes? People are still finding them “One person caught a rat in their kitchen.

I still get mice. There are people in my block who are running alive with them. People say they’ve found one - you never have one, if you’ve got one you’ve got more.”

Residents have said that there may be people on the estate who are too ashamed to report the problem themselves, and who also may be vulnerable, and have called on the council to intervene and stamp out the problem once and for good.

Southwark Council was contacted for comment on this issue but did not send a reply in time for publication.

Mouldy shoes the latest headache for residents

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of another flat in a Bermondsey development that has suffered a series of complaints over a period of four months have slammed developers for damp and mould that spread to their shoes and clothes.

Keeley Brady and her husband live in Roderick House on Raymouth Road. We reported last week on plans by developers Apex Airspace and landlords Lambeth and Southwark Housing Association (LSHA) to build 30 ‘affordable’ flats in a so-called ‘airspace’ development on top of and between the building and Antony House next door. Many residents have been given some compensation for the inconvenience.

Keeley has lived in her first-floor flat for more than 30 years. She said in April that the noise from the drilling, which she alleged went over legal limits, was having a serious effect on her husband, who is chronically unwell, has had two brain haemorrhages, and suffers from severe mental health problems. LSHA said the noise was within legal limits.

Keeley and her husband went on holiday to get away from the noisy building work.

When they got back they discovered damp in an internal wall. Video taken by Keeley appears to show that mould had spread into clothes in their wardrobe and even onto their shoes. Wallpaper damaged by damp had to be taken down and peeled off easily without a scraper. She said she spent fourteen hours one day this week cleaning the walls, clothes and shoes.

“It just goes from one thing to another at the moment,” an emotional Keeley said.

“I’m at my wits’ end with this, I don’t know what to do about it - I don’t know where to turn.” Her husband’s mental health problems have been made significantly worse by the discovery of the mould, she said.

The development, which began late last year and is set to end in December 2021, has resulted in a litany of complaints from households over noise, builders drilling through ceilings, and flooding.

Builders removed the roof of both buildings as part of the project, adding in temporary roofs that then flooded amid the recent rainy weather. Last week the News reported the story of a young mother of four distraught after her topfloor flat flooded, causing her to slip and drop her five-month-old baby.

A spokesperson from LSHA and Apex Airspace commented this week: “We were advised of a problem with water penetration on 6 September.

Representatives visited the tenant and were able to confirm that the problem relates to condensation in a wardrobe on an internal wall.

“A further inspection is taking place on 8 September to see if there is anything that can be done to mitigate the problem. If residents experience issues we make sure to work together with them to ensure they are supported. ‘’Alongside the delivery of 30 new affordable homes, the development works will provide the gable end properties with additional insulation, helping to reduce condensation in the future. We believe the significant upgrades we are making to the building will help to eliminate problems for residents in the future.”

Filmmaker Cameron Hall said he was inspired to create the documentary film, available on YouTube, to help promote small businesses who have been impacted by restrictions and lengthy closures throughout the pandemic.

“I’ve lived in North Cross Road for the past eight years and love everything about it, from the independent bars, shops and restaurants to the weekly market every Saturday. I feel very lucky to live on a street with such a great atmosphere and a community of wonderfully friendly people who will do anything to help you,” Cameron explained.

“Like most people, I think the

pandemic has made me appreciate where I live even more so than I already did.

“It’s been a time to refocus on what we have rather than what we don’t.

“It’s obviously been a very tough time for everyone - including sole traders and small businesses - and as a small business owner myself I know the challenges first-hand.

“I like telling human interest stories, which is something I do in my day job, and felt it would be great to capture the vibrancy of the street in a film project - celebrating the road and the people who work so hard to make it such a vital part of the local community.

“The film is purely a passion project and I’m very aware that by making a film like this there will be many people who don’t feature.

“It’s simply impossible to capture everyone so I decided to spotlight independent business and focus on five characters who work on the street – in what I hope reflects different types of local businesses - such as the market, cafes, restaurants, shops and the Jeannie Avent Gallery.”

Desperate appeal to find missing pensioner last seen in Kennington

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An appeal to find a missing 79-year-old last seen in Kennington over a week ago is being renewed by police, who say they are 'working to establish whether he might have come to harm'.

Another theory is that he may have had a medical issue that has prevented him from contacting his family. Officers say Edward Baller was last seen leaving his home in North Kensington to travel to a flat he rented out in Kennington’s Wincott Street at around midday on August 28 - Bank Holiday Saturday.

He did not return home and has not been seen or heard from since.

Detective Chief Inspector Chris Wood, from the Met’s specialist crime command, said at the weekend: “Our concerns for Edward's welfare are growing greater by the day.

"He is still missing, he is vulnerable and it remains a possibility that he has suffered a medical episode that is preventing him from making contact with his family.

“We are keeping them updated as regularly as we can and have also informed them that we are working to establish whether he might have come to harm.

"Searches at the address in Wincott Street are ongoing and we also continue to conduct CCTV, door to door and hospital checks.

“Members of the public, especially those in Wincott Street, should check any dash cam or doorbell footage they might have in case it has captured Edward.

"His family are suffering terribly and we need

any members of the public who can help us to make contact immediately."

Edward was last seen wearing dark coloured trousers, a denim jacket and carrying a denim bag. He is described as white, of average height and build, with grey hair.

Jail for man who shared terrorism images ‘glorifying violent Jihad’

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A 33-year-old from south-east London who shared extremist material glorifying terrorism has been jailed.

Fahd Ismail was sentenced to two years and nine months behind bars on Monday (September 6) after appearing at Woolwich Crown Court.

The offences date back to 2017 and involved Islamist material that encouraged violent jihad.

He was arrested on June 17, 2020, and subsequently released on bail, before being charged on December 18 the same year with four counts of ‘possessing of a document or record containing information of a kind likely to be useful to a person committing or preparing

an act of terrorism’.

A further two charges were added to his indictment on Friday, April 30. He pleaded guilty to all six counts on Friday, July 2.

Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met's Counter Terrorism Command, said: “This was a diligent and thorough investigation by highly skilled counter terrorism officers, which prevented further dissemination of extremist material.

“I encourage anyone who has suspicions about material someone is viewing online to report it to police without delay.

Trust your instincts and know that you are never wasting our time.”

According to the Met, around a fifth of reports made by the public are useful intelligence for counter-terrorism officers.

SouThWArk college hosted a careers event, in partnership with guy’s and St Thomas’, at the college’s employability hub in August. The organisations have joined forces to help people in the borough learn more about the different career options and employment pathways into the health sector.

During the event, attendees heard from representatives from Guy’s and St Thomas’ and the Department for Work and Pensions, who spoke about the diverse range of careers available in healthcare, including financial, legal and management roles.

Attendees also learnt about apprenticeship opportunities and a

scheme to link Southwark residents to local employers and to give students the boost they need to find out more about career opportunities at the Trust.

Teen charged with firearm offences

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A teenage boy has been charged with firearms offences after being stopped with a loaded gun by police last week in south London.

The 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition.

We reported earlier that the boy, from Newham, was stopped by police on Coldharbour Lane in Brixton after trying to get away on Wednesday (August 25).

He was stopped and searched near the junction with Loughborough Park.

The boy appeared at Bromley Magistrates' Court on Friday, August 27, and will be at Woolwich Crown Court

this Friday, September 10.

A spokesperson for the police said: "A teenager has been charged after officers on patrol recovered a loaded firearm in Coldharbour Lane, Lambeth, on Wednesday, 25 August following a stop and search.

"A 17-year-old boy from Newham, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was charged on Thursday, 26 August with possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition.

"He appeared in custody at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Friday, 27 August where he was remanded in custody to appear at Woolwich Crown Court on Friday, 10 September.

"The investigation is being led by officers from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command."

Two men are thought to have carried out eight robberies and attempted robberies from July 21-30.

Seven of these were on the evening of Wednesday 21.

In each robbery two black men on electric bikes cycled up to the victim and told them to hand over their watch, often threatening them with a gun.

In one incident at around 11.30pm in Addington Street at the junction with York Road, between Waterloo Station and St Thomas' Hospital, the robbers hit the victim with a pistol, injuring his head. The man was taken to hospital for treatment but was not seriously hurt.

This came just after another robbery incident involving the two men on Southwark Street, at the junction with Blackfriars Road.

Detective Constable Tom Waller, the investigating officer from the Met’s Operation Venice Investigations Team, said: “These robberies were absolutely terrifying ordeals for the victims and we are determined to do everything we can to bring those

responsible to justice.

“The suspects are dangerous individuals, as they have proven by repeatedly brandishing a firearm, and I would appeal to the public to help us get these men off London’s streets. Do you remember seeing two men in dark clothing and concealed faces riding e-bikes on the dates in question? Any detail you remember, no matter how insignificant you think it is, could really help our investigation. So please, get in touch with us today.”

Some of the other robberies took place in Westminster, St Paul’s, Kensington, Chelsea and in Hyde Park.

The Hyde Park incident took place last, on Friday July 30 at 8.30pm. Police said the victim was approached by two suspects on e-bikes. One of the men brandished a firearm and told the victim to hand over his watch, with a value of around £140,000. The suspects then fled the scene with the watch.

The suspects are described as black men, between the ages of 18 and 25, wearing all black clothing. They were both seen to be riding black electric bikes and had their faces covered.

Macy was given just 2% change of survival A patient with ‘the most complex trauma injuries’ treated and rehabilitated by King’s College Hospital has thanked staff for their care after being discharged thirteen months to the day after her lifechanging car accident.

Macy Window, from Essex, was airlifted to King’s in June 2020 after her car aquaplaned in bad weather and hit a tree at high speed while she was driving home from university to celebrate her father’s birthday.

Medics gave the nineteen-year-old just a two per cent chance of survival due to the extent of her injuries, which included a severed artery, punctured lung and multiple fractures, including both upper leg bones, pelvis and ribs.

After arriving at King’s she underwent 14-hours of life-saving surgery and spent six weeks in an induced coma.

Macy was in critical care for seven months and had more than a dozen surgeries. Last month, after acute intensive rehabilitation, she was discharged after nearly 400 days in the Denmark Hill hospital, with staff lining up to applaud her. She will now continue her recovery at a specialist neuro-disability centre.

“I would like to thank the surgeons, doctors and nurses on Frank Stansil Critical Care Unit who worked tirelessly to save my life for the first few months,” she said.

“As well as the therapists who worked so hard to change my life and improve the quality of my life throughout my whole journey at King’s.

“Together, they have all made such a difference and they are the reason I am the way I am today.”

She added :“I made good relationships with staff across the several wards I had been in, be that nurses, speech therapists, occupational therapists, physios and

psychologists, but I’m happy to be moving on to the next stage in this very long journey.

“I feel proud of myself for coming this far from where I started a year and one month ago to the day.”

Martine Balmir, therapy lead for major trauma, described Macy as the most complex major trauma patient the therapy team has rehabilitated at King’s.

“With rehabilitation as complex as Macy's, the only way to succeed was to put her at the centre of her care: working on Macy’s goals at her own pace and building trust.

“I'm so proud of the therapy team for the outstanding rehabilitation they delivered.

Therapists had to tap into that positive rehabilitation mind-set.

“It was a very emotional moment to watch her leave the hospital sat up in her wheelchair smiling, because I know how difficult it has been and how much work it took on both sides – from Macy and the therapists – to get there,” she said.

“I hope Macy knows how proud King’s staff are of her recovery and resilience, from the surgeons who saved her life, the

nurses who cared for her 24/7 to keep her alive, and the therapists who helped her relearn to hold her own head up, sit, roll, eat sweets or wipe her own tears.

“We all look forward to hearing about Macy’s continued progress on her rehabilitation journey.”

Looking to the future, Macy hopes to complete her English Literature degree and volunteer her time to help other patients.

“I am in the early stages of my rehab journey so who knows what the future holds for me and my physical state but I remain hopeful. I would like to work with young and long-term patients in hospital to improve their quality of life and have the opportunity to share my story so that it may help make a difference. “ I feel like this happened to me so that I am able to help others, which is what I want to do in life. In a strange way it has given me some purpose.”

sports camp is a huge success at evelina The parents of a boy with cerebral palsy have said how their son "loved" his time at the annual sports camp that Evelina children's hospital holds for children with disabilities.

The hospital, part of the Guy's and St Thomas' trust, runs the weeklong camp every year for children between the ages of five and seventeen. Activities like dancing, football, boxing, cricket and sailing, are led by qualified disability sports coaches in venues across Lambeth and Southwark.

Alamine, 10, was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was two and has been treated at Evelina London ever since. He has weakness and stiffness on the left side of his body and sometimes finds it difficult to be completely in control - which can make everyday tasks hard.

His parents, Lamine and Grace, said: “The sports camp has been great for Alamine. He has taken part in every activity and loved it – football was his favourite of course!”

Laura Thompson, paediatric physiotherapist for the Evelina London community team, said: “The camp is a great way to encourage children with disabilities to not only participate in sports but to improve their strength and fitness and build their self-confidence. Our sports camp is a fun way for children to try a number of different sporting activities in a supportive and welcoming environment.”

“The sports camp is always very popular and we received positive feedback from families who attend.

The children particularly enjoyed this year following a year of restricted activity.”

Teacher whose sight was saved

by King's College Hospital joins fundraising hike with midwife mum A teacher whose sight was saved

by King’s medics after she fell ill with a rare condition is now taking on a fundraising hike to raise funds for the hospital’s charity.

Two years ago, Kanayo Dike-Oduah nearly died after her local hospital was unable to diagnose her with the skin condition Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, a rare illness which attacks the eyes, skin and digestive tissue.

Eventually, at another A&E unit, doctors realised the condition had been triggered by a reaction to medication given to her while having a wisdom tooth extracted.

By the time Kanayo had been diagnosed, she had already lost around 70 per cent of her vision. Fortunately, eye specialists at King’s were able to save her sight.

Kanayo, who is the Hayes School’s head of psychology, is now looking forward to taking part in the Great Hospital Hike to raise money for King’s College Hospital Charity, on September 18.

“Two years ago I had to be resuscitated after collapsing in A&E and now I’m aiming to run thirteen miles as a warmup to the Great Hospital Hike,” she said.

She is even running a half marathon on September 4 to help boost her fundraising total for the hike.

“I am so thankful for my amazing recovery and so grateful to everyone at King’s for the immediacy of care I was given, their expertise and the way they explained everything to me and my family,” she explained.

“They reassured me all the way through, and even though I was scared I felt safe under their care.

“I think that was the most important thing, feeling safe."

She will be joined on the bike by her mum, Hilda Nwokedi, a specialist midwife who has worked at King’s for more than two decades.

The pair will follow a route from King’s

Denmark Hill base to the trust’s sister hospital the Princess Royal, in Bromley.

“Mum and I are best friends and I wanted to do the hike with her as a way of saying thank you to her for all the support she gave me while I was unwell and for the way she supports her patients at King’s,” she added.

“Mum has previously raised money for King’s so the hike will be an incredible thing to do together.

“We can bond over it, reminisce and tell each other stories as we walk.”

One reason why medics initially failed to diagnose Kanayo is that they failed to recognise how the syndrome presents on darker skin.

She is now taking her experience and using it to ensure better diagnoses of skin conditions and symptoms.

She is working with health professionals and universities to update the medical curriculum and ensure that many more images of darker skin are included in medical textbooks.

Thanks to her work, the British Association of Dermatologists have increased the number of non-white skin images from one to eighteen in one of their publications.

“Having an undiagnosed lifethreatening illness was extremely frightening but looking back, because I’m a woman of faith, I’m thankful that it happened to me because I am now able to use my experience to bring about some form of change,” she explained.

“But also, with my mum being in the medical profession and my sister training to be a nurse, I’m really grateful for our medics and all that they do for us.”

Walworth church to host ‘exciting’ ska concert with Natty bo & the top cats

A Walworth church is hosting a series of concerts for the third year in a row.

Jamaican ska band Natty Bo & the Top Cats and bossa group Forest Law will be playing at St Peter's Walworth on Liverpool Grove on October 1, as part of Altar_Native, an annual concert series that began in 2019.

Artist Oscar Romp will be sketching the musicians, with the finished drawings to be auctioned and the proceeds given to local homeless

charity the Robes Project.

Father Michael Robinson, assistant curate of St Peter's Walworth, said: "We are delighted to be part of this exciting collaboration of community and music, bringing together so many different cultural influences into a sacred space."

The concerts are organised by local cafe Louie Louie, who are also providing food and drink. Organisers said: "We advise you to wear your best dancing shoes and be prepared to skank in the aisles."

St Peter's Walworth is a grade one listed church designed by the celebrated Georgian architect Sir John Soane and built in 1825. The building was damaged by bombing in the Second World War but was restored in 1953.

One significant survival of the bombing was the Bechstein piano, which is still played.

Elephant and Castle community projects get £50,000 in funding Groups getting local people involved in art and theatre, as well as supporting people with serious mental health problems, are among the Elephant & Castle organisations that have won a total of £50,000 in funding.

The money comes from the Elephant & Castle community fund, set up by developers Lendlease and Southwark Council in 2012. Lendlease is the company behind the Elephant Park development on the site of the former Heygate Estate. The fund has provided more than £300,000 in grants to local groups since it was set up.

Groups could apply for individual grants of between £500 and £10,000 to address a local need in areas like further education, skills, training & entrepreneurship, arts and culture, environment, young people and wellbeing.

The six groups below received the £50,000 between them.

Art in the Park Art in the Park is an arts organisation that tries to reach people who are isolated and vulnerable by getting them involved with "relaxing and empowering creative activities."

Art in the Park has won funding for a project that will enable their artists and volunteers to reach out to the wider community surrounding Elephant & Castle with a series of art workshops which explore different art processes using local history.

Local historians Julia Honess and Diana Cochrane will uncover stories about the Newington Estate, African fabric shops and Jewish tailoring on Walworth Road and historic music

venue the Trocadero for workshops in July and August next year.

Once finished the artwork will be published in a booklet and celebrated in an event that will bring together everyone who took part.

Colab Colab is an immersive theatre experience that works with local communities on themes that are relevant to their own history and neighbourhoods.

With this grant Colab will carry out a year-long youth theatre workshop for people in Elephant & Castle. Groups of young people will have the chance to join one of a few twelve-week programmes, each of which results in a community performance.

Pembroke House Pembroke house is a community centre which offers a number of activities and facilities, all which aim to bring local communities together, like a café and English classes.

The new funding will go towards expanding the range of courses to include dance classes, for people who may not usually get to take part.

The Listening Place The Listening Place is an organisation that provides face-to-face support for people who have suicidal thoughts.

Based in the area surrounding Elephant Park, funding will go towards continuing their work.

Southwark Carers A free service for all carers in Southwark, offering advice, emotional and wellbeing support, training,

counselling, advocacy/ The funding will help transform a rooftop space at the Carer’s Centre into an innercity allotment and nature area to deliver activities and development opportunities.

Citizens UK Citizens UK runs Parents and Communities Together (PACT), a family support group, in Southwark.

The new funding will help the service's Spanish language mothers' group Espacio Mama offer weekly group meetings for peer support, signposting and workshops.

Lendlease’s project director for Elephant Park, Kristy Lansdown, said: “We are committed to creating a thriving, inclusive and sustainable community at Elephant Park, and are pleased to support community projects which directly benefit those who live, work and study in the area.

"There are some superb initiatives this year which we’ll be supporting, in addition to the broad range of projects which have already benefited from funding through the scheme.”

Cllr Helen Dennis, Southwark Council's cabinet member for climate emergency and sustainable development, said: “Over the last eight years, a diverse range of groups and activities have received funding from this scheme which have delivered real benefits for thousands of local residents.

We look forward to seeing the contribution this year’s projects will make towards creating a vibrant and sustainable neighbourhood at Elephant and Castle that new and existing residents can enjoy.”

Local nurses led first trial into COVID-19 patient care

Nurses at Guy’s and St Thomas’ are taking part in the first trial into how patients with COVID-19 are cared for - and leading the research.

The COVID-NURSE trial is believed to be the only robust research study on nursing for patients admitted to hospital with the Coronavirus.

The study looks at how new care guidelines, developed by the University of Exeter with nurses, academics and patients who had experience of COVID-19 during the first wave, can impact on outcomes for patients.

Nurses taking part in the trial are randomly assigned to either continue with standard care, or adopt the innovative new model for care.

Once evaluated, it is hoped that the study can help develop a suite of training materials and resources so best practice can be shared internationally.

The study is being led at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust by Fiona Hibberts, head of the Nightingale Academy and a consultant nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’, is leading the study at the trust.

“At such a difficult and challenging

time, our ward teams have embraced the study and appreciate the importance of it,” she said.

“They want to be part of designing nursing care and supporting it with the best possible evidence. A huge thank you to them for supporting the trial.”

Avey Bhatia, chief nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’, added: “Over the course of the pandemic, nurses have gone over and above to care for patients, and we’ve seen just how vital nursing is.

“The COVID-NURSE trial is revolutionary for a number of reasons.

It’s nurse-led research, which we want to see more of.

“It is also an intervention that has been developed with patients, which is really powerful.

“We’re excited as a trust to be taking part in this study.

"We think by bringing together nurses and patients to lead research, this trial has the potential to go beyond the care that we give to COVID-19 patients.

“The lessons we learn from this work could change the future of nursing, by showing us how we can learn from patients and gather robust evidence on how nursing improves patient care.”

Essential info for those starting secondary next year

Open days are due to take place, but make sure that you know what is what

Each year the challenge of deciding on which secondary school to apply to for your child remains one of the biggest education decisions for parents and carers...

You can’t expect to name a secondary school and assume that your child will automatically be offered a place. It is simply a case of listing the schools you prefer and awaiting the outcome of the allocation process.

It is vital that you get the order of preferences right on your child’s primary to secondary transfer application. You may be tempted to name just one school on the online application as it is the only school you want for your child. However, there are no guarantees that your child will be offered this school. To increase the chances of your child being offered a preferred school, we strongly advise you to list up to six preferences on their application.

There are various types of secondary schools to choose from including academies, voluntary aided, foundation, free and independent schools. And it is here where the oversubscription criteria

vary. It is important you fully understand the oversubscription criteria and match them to your own circumstances. Some schools are heavily oversubscribed, with hundreds applying for places.

Southwark Council has not published open day/evening dates in their brochure this year and you are strongly advised to check each school's website for details on how and when they will be holding their open day/evening as this may be subject to change at short notice.

Make sure you find out how many applications the school usually receives this information will also be printed in the Starting Secondary school in Southwark 2022/23 brochure and the Starting secondary school in Lambeth 2022/23 booklet, as well as other boroughs.

The more people who apply for a school for their children, the bigger the risk that your child might not be offered a place at that school. Armed with this knowledge, you should be better placed to put your preferences down.

READERS’ VIEWS RSPCA appeal for information after kitten 'callously thrown over Ruskin Park railings'

850 affordable and social rent homes that will be safe I t was good to see BBC Newsnight recently focus in on the building safety crisis which is having a devastating impact upon the lives of countless Londoners and many people here in Southwark.

As of July, there were 65 buildings in the borough where ‘stay put’ fire safety guidance had been temporarily suspended and replaced by a simultaneous evacuation policy.

This means that construction defects have been found in a building, such as unsafe cladding, which would allow a fire to spread quickly. Where this is the case, evacuating every resident one by one in the event of a fire has been deemed the safest option.

Many of these buildings will also require a waking watch which is adding to the huge bill that hundreds of local leaseholders are being burdened with because of a crisis that is not their responsibility. With the government and developers failing to

put in the financial support needed to make these homes safe, leaseholders are also footing the eye-watering costs for remediation works, rising insurance premiums and EWS1 forms.

This really is a scandal of unprecedented proportions and over four years on from Grenfell, we are still sadly not seeing enough urgent action being taken on it. This is something I’ll continue to press for.

In much more positive news, it has been fantastic to see the mayor recently award Southwark Council £126 million to start delivering over 850 affordable and social rent homes in the borough over the next five years.

To tackle the building safety crisis, each new block of flats built under the programme will have sprinklers or other fire suppression systems in place. A ban on combustible materials being used in the external walls of new residential developments will also be in place.

Hall must also be environmentally sustainable to help London hit its net-zero target by 2030, whilst providing private outdoor space for its occupants.

London Assembly meetings are now back in session after the August break. During the latest Plenary meeting, I was pleased to see my motion pass calling on the Mayor to put pressure on the government to stop their planned cut to the £20 weekly uplift to Universal Credit.

As I said in my speech to the Assembly, this extra £20 can often mean the difference between ensuring there is enough food on the table and putting the heating on for many local families and households struggling during the pandemic. In these difficult times, it is a lifeline that should be made permanent.

Finally, I am encouraging all eligible local community groups to apply for Southwark Council’s new £1m fund to support activities and positive opportunities for young people.

When I turned to Page 9 and read the story about the poor little kitten being treated like a piece of rubbish I felt keen to try and establish contact with Harmsworth Animal Hospital. This story really shook me up. As a rescue cat owner of two, I just wished all those who bought pets during lockdown simply for comfort had thought twice before taking on an animal. Cats, kittens, dogs, puppies certainly don’t deserve to be discarded in such primitive conditions over railings in a broken pet carrier. I wondered to myself how this person would feel if he/she was thrown over a park railings in the rain and in the cold without access to food or a warm bed? The callous cruelty inflicted on this poor kitten will have lasting scars. What a brutal society we live in today. I totally renounce the myth we are a nation of animal lovers. Rubbish.

Southwark needs more spaces like Giraffe House

outhwark Council’s last minute intervention on the future of Giraffe House feels like too little, too late - and the communication is still lacking.

Although it is welcome news that the building is staying in use before being redeveloped, and a perfectly good site isn’t going to be decommissioned and locked up within days, this news will be small comfort to the charities that use the space.

Mentivity is taking over the building and while some groups can stay, others will have to leave due to new programmes and activities being launched by the charity.

Those who will have to leave say they have had little support so far in finding an alternative.

Now term has already started, and pandemic restrictions have eased, it will be even harder for charities and community groups to find affordable new bases in the borough.

Many TRA halls and estates are either having major works, are in need of major works, or simply aren’t set up to accommodate multiple groups that are open throughout the week or all year round. Supply simply cannot meet the demand. Any halls that have been closed during the pandemic will also have a backlog of events, bookings and possibly need more maintenance and new health and safety checks.

Already, much-needed and much-loved organisations are too often in competition with one other when it comes to finding suitable and affordable community spaces.

The groups in Giraffe house do fantastic work. So good, in fact, that some form part of the council’s own holiday provision and have been critical to the borough’s COVID-19 response.

The scouts group left in the dark about their future told us they weren’t in the business of casting blame - they just wanted answers. It is a very generous view in the circumstances.

Amid an information blackout, it has been impossible for them to organise activities, find new premises, or plan ahead financially - leaving them, and others, in the lurch if they are some of the unfortunate ones unable to stay on site.

Burgess Park is now part of our Olympic history and the planned skate bowl has huge support, but the smaller organisations shouldn’t be left out or left behind by this huge project.

Giraffe House is a one-stop shop for many families as it is a network of community groups all in one, convenient place. It is also secure, safe and has an outdoor area making it COVID safe.

Southwark needs more spaces like it.

The Dead and Dying Brought to Life Winsome Pinnock’s Rockets and Blue Lights is a phenomenal piece of work that comes at the right time, writes Michael Holland...

The title is from a JMW Turner painting, with Turner played ably here

by Paul Bradley, though the basis of the story is from another Turner artwork, Slavers Throwing Overboard the Dead and Dying. It is the long brushstroke of time that takes the play from the first slaving raid on the West African coast in 1564 up to the present time when a film - Ghost Ship - is made about the painting.

It opens with two black women viewing the work, one sees it as Turner highlighting the horror of black people murdered by being thrown into the sea and the ship’s owners reimbursed for ‘lost cargo’ in an insurance claim; the other asks why you can’t actually see black people drowning and the horror on the faces of those poor souls. Two valid points that continue throughout.

We then jump to rehearsals for the forthcoming film. The lead actress

questions why script changes make it more about Turner and not the actual atrocity that is depicted in oils. Again it is the white male superseding the black person. A continuation of white people rewriting or erasing black people from history.

Rockets and Blue Lights then becomes a series of vignettes from different moments in time, each scene change sees the actors exiting the stage in quivering blue light, in slomo, as if they were floating beneath the sea. Or drowning. At some point in the performance, I noticed that there had been a constant sound of running, trickling water. Imperceptible at first, but now as if I was caught in a torrent.

The actors double up their roles and I often struggled to keep up with their characters as each told a different story, either personal or an ancestral tale handed down, though all linked by the ebb and flow of time.

The whippings, the abductions, the story of the baby taken to be the pet of a rich man’s son, the ship cursed because of its slaving days all fed into

a narrative swimming towards a 21st century reality. The early confusion cleared. The transparency of white virtue-signalling in a white, maledominated world was evident when Ghost Ship won awards. But not awards for everyone.

Some of the scene/time changes infused with each other, adding a little light humour. And in a subject so far down in the darkest depths a little light was needed, but I found it misplaced. I did not want to laugh, I wanted to feel the pain. With instances of racism in the papers on a daily basis there should always be space for the hard truth.

In such an ensemble piece as Rockets and Blue Lights it was difficult for anyone to stand out because everyone worked so hard to make this a collective triumph. The ending evoked an immediate standing ovation.

Musica Antica Rotherhithe present the first staging of Domenico Belli's opera Orfeo Dolente since its premiere in Florence in 1616, writes Michael Holland...

Written when opera as an art form was still in its infancy, it shows the New Music of the early Baroque at its most experimental, expressive and emotionally powerful.

Lasting under 1 hour, it also makes the perfect introduction to music of this

period for those new to early opera.

Belli's opera will be accompanied by music by his contemporary Claudio Monteverdi, and Monteverdi's student and most prolific composer of opera of the 17th Century, Francesco Cavalli.

Co-Founder of Musica Antica Rotherhithe, Oliver Doyle says: “We’ve spent most of the past 4 years focussing on making music from 400 years ago accessible. The UK’s classical music scene focusses almost exclusively on sacred

music from the Renaissance and music written after 1700, consistently leaving out 100 years of really great music, particularly opera. The last opera we staged, The Hospital was a hidden gem – not only small scale, funny and with really beautiful music, but the closest thing you can get to socialism in a 17th Century drama: it made the point that as a society we try to find a solution for just about everything apart from poverty.

hearing, and it doesn’t take long to find satire that’s still, sadly, very pertinent to our society.

“Orfeo Dolente is one of the earliest surviving operas. It was actually performed in 5 small sections in between the acts of another play originally. The story is based on Greek myth – Orpheus’ wife Eurydice is bitten by a snake, dies and goes to the underworld. He goes after her to save her, and his sorrowful singing is so moving that Pluto sends

Eurydice back, on condition that Orpheus not look at her until they are back above the ground. Of course he’s so excited he turns to look at her, and she’s gone forever. That version of the story was set by 3 composers between 1600-1610 alone, so this version is a sort of sequel, where Orpheus tries to get Eurydice back a second time.

At the beginning of the 1600s, composers in Florence were obsessed with trying to give music the power to make people smile or cry that ancient Greek theorists described. Of course they had no idea what Ancient Greek music sounded like, so they did their best to recreate it with what clues they had. They picked ancient stories, depicting gods and goddesses but all displaying emotions that all of us feel, and they did everything they could to make the music reflect the text. The result is a lot of emotion packed into 40 minutes, with weird and wonderful harmonies that to most people sound quite modern, but are actually someone 400 years ago trying to emulate music from 2,000 years before that.

Jessica Eucker adds: “We’ve got a really varied audience, from people who’ve loved this sort of music for years to others who never attended a classical music concert before and come back ever since. We do everything we can to make our concerts accessible, from low ticket prices and an interesting bar to staging our work, so it looks interesting too. We also do a lot of talking in between pieces to break down the wall between ‘us and them’ that a lot of concerts still put up.

We perform as a group of friends, and we want to show that and involve our audience in that too.”

A bar selling cream teas, wine, beer and home-infused gin cocktails will operate during the interval and after the performance.

The charity that owns the statue of Guy's Hospital founder Thomas Guy wants to move the monument "to a less prominent location" due to his investments in a major slave-owning company, following a consultation, writes Kit Heren...

The consultation also recommended that a statue at St Thomas' of Sir Robert Clayton, who helped rebuild the hospital in the 17th century and also was involved in the slave trade, be kept where it is a because is is not in a prominent position.

Guy's statue, which is on the King's College university campus near London Bridge, should be moved to somewhere less visible in the local area, the authors of the consultation advised.

recommended. Guy's and St Thomas' Foundation plans to implement all these recommendations. The foundation said it wanted to move both statues in June last year but later withdrew planning applications and began the consultation.

But the changes are unlikely to happen until 2022 at least and could be blocked by the government. Both statues are listed, meaning the foundation will need planning permission to move Guy. The foundation said that "political sentiment" could be a problem. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden has been an outspoken critic of statue removal. He told a museum in Shoreditch that wanted to remove a statue of a slave owner that "the government believes that it is always legitimate to examine and debate Britain’s history, but that removing statues, artwork and other historical objects is not the right approach".

In light of this the foundation's legal advice on moving the statue of Guy any time soon is negative. Planning barrister Morag Ellis QC said in her report that the application would likely be "called in" by central government, meaning the decision would be taken out of Southwark Council's hands. She added that due to the "new" and "politically charged" atmosphere around "contested heritage" she would expect an application to fail in the current climate.

Thomas Guy was a governor at St Thomas' in the eighteenth century and donated large sums to the hospital. He later founded Guy's Hospital, a place for 'incurables', with an endowment worth about £424m in today's money.

Much of this came from Guy's investment in the South Sea Company, which had a monopoly on slave shipments to South America. Guy's original investment of £45,000 (about £96m in today's money) helped to finance the company for nearly a decade. His investment appreciated significantly as the company's stock became the notorious 'South Sea Bubble'.

Guy sold out before the bubble burst, making a huge profit, much of which he invested in founding Guy's Hospital.

Some are more cautious about Guy's involvement in slavery. Professor Roger Jones, editor of the British Journal of General Practice, who has been Professor of General Practice at Guy’s, King’s and St Thomas’ School of Medicine, told the News last year: “Guy certainly wasn’t remotely involved in the active business of the slave trade. We don’t even know if he knew that the South Sea company was a slaving company. Of course you assume that he did. It was a government initiative to let the company offer shares, and Guy was literally one of hundreds of people who bought the shares.”

Clayton owned a plantation in Bermuda and was an investor in the Royal African Corporation, a major slave-trading firm, in the late seventeenth century. This is the same company that Edward Colston, whose statue in Bristol was toppled by protesters last year, was a member of at around the same time.

It is "highly probable" that money from Clayton's investment in the Royal African Corporation was used to finance the rebuilding of St Thomas', the consultation said.

The fact that both men's highly successful investments in wholesale human suffering abroad were used to create institutions that alleviated the suffering of poor people in London is the complexity at the heart of the debate.

A common argument against moving or removing statues of historic figures who were involved in the slave trade is that they were people "of their time" - that support for, or investment in, the sale of human beings was commonplace at the time these people lived and so we should not judge them by today's standards.

David Bryan and Dr Samina Zahir, the authors of the report that resulted from the consultation, argue against this in part.

"While it is true that Guy and Clayton were not exceptional in their investments in slave trading companies such as the RAC and SSC (wealthy men, and some women, from across the social spectrum invested in such companies), there were also contemporaries of Guy and Clayton who critiqued the slave trade and slavery on moral grounds.

"As MPs Guy and Clayton had a platform which they could have used to speak out as others did, but they did not," they wrote.

The consultation took place from August to December last year, amid a wave of discussion in the UK and other countries about the importance of statues of historical figures. Mr Bryan and Dr Zehir said they understood the complexity and controversy of the two figures and wanted their research

to reflect a wide range of views.

The consultation included: Interviews with experts in the field • One-to-one interviews with people connected to the hospitals, King's College London, Southwark and Lambeth councils, and other community groups • Group discussions with people from the university, the hospitals and community groups • An online questionnaire, which was open to anyone The questionnaire was originally intended to reach about 600 people, but ended up being answered by more than 3,000 after it was found and reposted online by Save Our Statues, a group that says it promotes "Great Britain’s exceptional and irreplaceable historical and cultural heritage.”

Save Our Statues' followers made up at least a quarter of respondents to the survey and appear to have skewed the results. For example, in response to the “Should we give honour, through statues, to people who invested their money in enslaved people?” 66 per cent of respondents overall answered ‘Yes’. Of the people who said they were from King's College, 63 per cent answered 'No' to this question.

Some people consulted said the statues made them feel proud to be British. Others said they were a reminder of racism in British society. Mr Bryan and Dr Zahir concluded that, no matter people's political views, the statues represent something greater than just the two men they depict.

Kieron Boyle, the chief executive, of the Guy's and St Thomas' Foundation, said that slavery is part of the charity's history, and the organisation has a "duty to address" this legacy.

He added: "Being a charitable foundation focused on improving health involves tackling the health inequalities we see

every day affecting black communities, and making sure the public realm surrounding hospitals is welcoming to everyone.

“Last year we committed to making decisions on the statues of Sir Robert Clayton and Thomas Guy based on a strong understanding of the facts, and the views held about them. Through the independent consultation, we heard from a broad range of voices, including those communities most local to the statues. We sought to balance these in making our decision.

“The consultation has recommended that we retain both statues in the public realm, provide information explaining how both men made their wealth, and move one of the statues to a less prominent position.

It has also suggested that we commission new artistic works to tell the rich story of those involved in the hospitals’ history.

“We recognise that these can be polarising debates and are grateful for the wide range of views that shaped these independent recommendations.

We are committed to seeing all the changes through. The pace at which we can proceed will depend on planning legislation and political sentiment, as well as the immediate need to prioritise the delivery of COVID-19 vaccinations on the site of the Thomas Guy statue. We have begun by commissioning comprehensive interpretation to accompany each statue.”

The problem, some may argue, is what constitutes "comprehensive interpretation" of these men's legacies. As we have seen over the past year, and as the foundation's own consultation showed, there is no objective history of the impact of slavery on institutions like Guy's and St Thomas'. Whatever comes out is likely to be coloured one way or the other by contemporary attitudes and prevailing academic thought. One thing is probable: the importance of these statues and others like them will continue to be debated.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that it has made the above named Traffic Order under section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

The purpose of the Order is to facilitate the Bermondsey Street Festival, as indicated in the schedule to this notice.

The effect of the Order is to prohibit any vehicle from:(a) entering or proceeding in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice on the date and between the hours specified in that schedule;. (b) waiting (including waiting for the purpose of delivering or collecting goods or loading or unloading a vehicle) in the length of street specified in the schedule to this notice.

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GAVIN ROSE is back in the dugout and Dulwich Hamlet have continued their solid start to the National League South season with a 2-2 draw at Eastbourne Borough last weekend.

Hamlet boss Rose was recently hospitalised with Coivd-19 but recovered and watched his side claim a fifth point in four games to remain eleventh in the table.

The Hamlet were just four minutes away from three points until the home side snatched an equaliser.

Dulwich goalkeeper Charlie Grainger was called into action in the ninth minute and denied Leone Gravata with a stunning save.

The visitors’ first chance arrived in the sixteenth minute when Giovanni McGregor delivered a corner but Tyrone Sterling couldn’t find the target with his header.

Grainger again came to his side’s rescue in the 27th minute and again it was from Gravata’s effort.

But Grainger couldn’t repeat his heroics three minutes later as the hosts took the lead through former Gillingham and Peterborough midfielder Chris Whelpdale.

Dulwich were almost level inside three minutes only for Andrew Harris-Sealy to see an effort loop towards goal but come back off the post.

Rose’s side then got that bit of fortune their play had deserved when another corner from McGregor in the 35th minute confused Curtis Anderson, the on-loan Wycombe goalkeeper inadvertently putting the ball over his own line as the Hamlet levelled.

Dulwich kept pressing for the rest of the half and Danny Mills missed with a header just before the break.

Mills was off-target again with a diving header eleven minutes into the second half but eight minutes later Dulwich were in front. It was an inspired substitution, as Darren McQueen made it 2-1 just seven

The omens weren’t good for the visitors as early as they third minute when Hamlet captain Brit Saylor beat United goalkeeper Zara Butt only to be denied by the woodwork.

That setback didn’t put off Dulwich as Lucy Monkman and Havana McElvaine both tested Butt, who was equal to their attempts.

A breakthrough seemed inevitable, though, and it finally arrived in the 41st minute when Saylor beat Butt with a fierce drive.

Stans eek out win to remain unbeaten

Jack Carthy scored the only goal of the contest in the eighth minute as Stans claimed their fifth victory in seven to sit second in the table, two points off Croydon with a game in hand.

Stansfeld started on the front foot with Ollie Milton hitting the crossbar after just one minute with a close-range header.

The visitors quickly made the breakthrough when Macey Malyon’s header from a corner was turned home

by Carthy.

Fifteen minutes in, Sam Smith hit a volley from 25 yards that just skimmed the top of the bar with the goalkeeper beaten.

It was a midfield battle for most of the rest of the half with no clear-cut chances.

Early in the second half Malyon rattled the crossbar from the edge of the box with the goalkeeper again beaten. Stansfeld thought the ball bounced down over the

line from that effort but to their frustration the linesman and referee didn’t agree.

In the 68th minute, good work from Carthy and Milton sent Ross Morley though one-on-one but the goalkeeper came out on top making a good save.

Stansfeld continued to press for the second goal and in the 80th minute Malyon crossed low for Rob Hughes and Carthy sliding in at the back post but neither could make contact.

Although Stansfeld failed to add to their early goal, their defence stood firm to see out the win.

Man of the Match: Greg Summersby Stansfeld’s Reserves made it three wins on the spin with a hard fought 2-1 success away at Kings Hill with the goals coming from Red Jenkins and Stefan Kempton.

Stars were chasing 139 to win as Diamonds captain Hollie Armitage collected an unbeaten 59 and had a 71run platform set by their openers Bryony Smith and Aylish Cranstone.

But it was Capsey who once again underlined her big-game temperament to take Stars over the line with two overs to spare in front of 1,270 at the Ageas Bowl.

Diamonds found a formula in their victory over Southern Vipers in the Eliminator earlier in the day, and replicated it steadfastly.

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk HAVING SECURED promotion from Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship the previous week, Dulwich demolished Dorking for just 42 runs in their final match to ensure that they would finish as the divisional champions.

Dulwich invited their opponents to bat, knowing that five wickets would be enough to secure the

Winfield-Hill – did the bulk of the scoring and Jenny Gunn scored an unbeaten 22.

This time the openers reversed their dismissals – with Leah Dobson caught at mid-off and Bess Heath run out – by an incredible pick-up and direct hit from Emma Jones.

England batter Winfield-Hill scored 65 in the victory over the Vipers but fell for a third ball duck when she was leg before to Grace Gibbs.

But Armitage, who’s highest score for Diamonds this season before today was 21, took control with a run-hard approach – only scoring four boundaries despite a strike-rate in excess of 120.

The skipper reached her half-century in Championship. But they cannot have expected to achieve this in just 6.3 overs.

Three of the first four batsmen gave catching practice to Nick Gunning at mid-on, while former Dulwich player Kamran Munawar edged to Chris Purshouse at slip.

The fifth dismissal came via a catch at midwicket by sixteen-year-old Jonty Postlewhite, making his first team debut. The first five wickets had gone down with just 16 runs on the board. Teen sensation Alice Capsey 41 balls, identical to Winfield-Hill in the afternoon, as she added 43 with Sterre Kalis – who was caught and bowled by Linsey Smith – and an unbroken 50 with Gunn.

Where the Vipers stuttered in response, Stars attacked in the Powerplay – with Bryony Smith and Aylish Cranstone both striking three fours apiece, with the former also adding a slog-swept six as 50 was smashed in the first six overs.

After a further 26 runs in 13 balls, Cranstone stepped on her own stumps before Smith chopped her namesake on in the following over.

A collapse was in full effect when Katie Levick’s leg-spin accounted for Gibbs seven overs with figures of 1-12, and gave way to skipper Jon Lodwick who bowled three overs to take 2-4.

Ahmed Khan came on for the 21st over and took the last wicket.

Whereas the first five wickets were all caught, the last five were bowled as the lower order displayed varying degrees of ineptitude. Kieran Corbett, who went in at number ten after arriving late, was the only batsman to make double figures, finishing with 11 not out.

Corbett and Munawar then opened the bowling, but were unable to make a breakthrough against Purshouse and Ollie Steele. The pair added 37 for the first wicket before Purshouse fell leg before to the spin of Chris

and Phoebe Franklin – caught deep midwicket and mid-on respectively – in four balls, with four wickets falling in quick succession.

Amid the chaos, the precociously talented teenager Capsey had arrived at the crease, scooped to the boundary first ball and was motoring.

A straight six, a sweetly timed flicked through midwicket were the eye-candy among 14 singles and two twos.

She added 51 with the equally impressive Alice Davidson-Richards, who was caught at extra cover with three still required, before Kirstie White flicked off her legs to give her side their first piece of silverware.

Weill for 24. Steele knocked off the next six runs to finish unbeaten with 18 and secure a nine wicket victory in just 8.4 overs.

The main reason for Dulwich’s success this season was the allround prowess of their attack. This was the tenth time in 16 completed matches that they had dismissed the opposition for less than 120.

Leg spinner Ahmed Khan, with 27 wickets at 14.04, was the leading wicket taker at the age of just 16. Five other bowlers took between 16 and 23 wickets.

Dulwich will be looking forward to tougher challenges next season as they seek to consolidate their place in Division 1.

Lions’ mettle set for major test OPINION

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk IF MILLWALL wanted a run of fixtures to really test their top-six credentials, then September will provide it.

The Lions travel to West Brom and then Swansea, two favourites not just for the play-offs but automatic promotion, even if the latter have had a tricky start after the departure of Steve Cooper late in the summer and the lack of time Russell Martin has had to impose his possessionheavy style.

Millwall have Coventry at home next, and they owe the Sky Blues one after their woeful 6-1 defeat at St Andrew’s on the final day of last season.

After they host Leicester City in the third round of the EFL Cup, the Lions play Nottingham Forest at The Den before going to an improving Bristol City side who have won two of their last three games.

They are the ideal blend of tests to see whether Millwall will measure up. The first two are against sides that would expect to dominate them, but the Lions showed last year in gaining five draws against the three teams that went up that they have real resilience. It’s now whether they have enough quality in the final third to take the next step and actually beat those top sides.

And then the next three are arguably teams they would expect to be on the front foot against and beat.

There are some similarities between the start of this season and the start of the 2019-20 campaign, but hopefully they don’t go so far.

Before the summer transfer window two years ago Neil Harris promised to make significant changes to his squad after a poor season in which there had been problems in the dressing room.

Millwall followed through, with ten senior players leaving and nine first-team signings, including Bartosz Bialkowski,

Millwall got their first league win of the season last time out against Blackpool skipper Alex Pearce, Connor Mahoney, Matt Smith and Jayson Molumby.

Yet all the optimism and sense of refresh had evaporated after just the seventh league game of the season, an abject 2-0 defeat at Blackburn Rovers.

If Harris had had a vision for the team, he couldn’t make it work. At Ewood Park that evening, well after the final whistle, Harris was sat alone on the bench staring dejectedly at the pitch. It was as if he recognised he had taken it as far as he could.

Millwall then lost 2-1 at home to QPR before barely any improvement in 1-1 draws at Huddersfield and Luton. Harris

stood down the day after the game at Kenilworth Road.

Millwall were similarly ambitious in the recent transfer window, the last signing, Sheyi Ojo on loan from Liverpool, an eye-catching one given his ability and experience in the Premier League and the Championship.

Now boss Gary Rowett has to do what Harris couldn’t and make is all come together.

Early-season injuries to key players such as Shaun Hutchinson and Mason Bennett haven’t helped, but the Lions have cover in most areas.

And they have a potentially exciting

mix in attack, with Bennett set to resume training this week to add to the options of Ojo, Jed Wallace, Benik Afobe, Matt Smith, Connor Mahoney, Tom Bradshaw and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson.

Millwall look strong in central midfield and at the back Daniel Ballard has shown much promise so far adding to the steel that was already there in Hutchinson, Jake Cooper, Murray Wallace and Alex Pearce.

Behind them, Bartosz Bialkowski has been one of the best goalkeepers in the league in the last two seasons.

The only two areas where Millwall don’t really have depth at the moment are at wing-back, where there is no natural

player on the right with Danny McNamara out injured. On the other side, the Lions have to hope Scott Malone avoids injury as there is no other player in the squad capable of being that regular threat high up the pitch on the left.

Throw in the core of the squad being together for a number of seasons, the character they have – coming from behind in a tetchy atmosphere to claim their first win of the league season against Blackpool last time out – and their belief that they can be contenders, and it looks like a good mix.

This month could tell us whether that is all just hopeful optimism or that Millwall really have the right stuff to be challengers.

Muller aims to be scholar with the Saints Hayden Muller

johnk@southwarknews.co.uk HAYDEN MULLER is relishing the all-on-the-line nature of men’s football as he aims to learn as much as possible with St Johnstone to take back to Millwall and win a regular firstteam place.

Muller, 19, has made three appearances in the Scottish Premiership for former Lions assistant Callum Davidson’s Saints, who won the domestic cup double last season.

Davidson has given Muller responsibility on the ball, and the youngster explained why he’s comfortable with that.

“It’s a long season and now is a time for me to take my chance and show the gaffer why I need to stay in the team,” Muller told The Courier in Scotland.

“We speak about stepping in with the ball a lot and creating overloads

in midfield.

“I thought I managed to do that well in the second half [in the 0-0 draw with] St Mirren.

“I used to be a midfielder back when I was fourteen or fifteen, so it’s a trait I’ve naturally got.

“That is a bonus and it always helps the team out when you can create an overload in midfield. It’s something I’ll keep on doing.

“I would back myself to play centreback, right-back or centre-midfield.

I’m confident.

“Hopefully I can build on my performances and help the team get the three points next time round.

“When I do eventually go back to Millwall, hopefully I can slot in and do my thing.

“I want to learn men’s football. It is a lot different to under-23 football.

“It’s all about the three points and not as much about developing players. You go out to win three points and that is it.

“So far it has been tough but I think

I’ve picked up a lot in the three games I’ve played.”

The Saints qualified for Europe this season but were knocked out in the Europa League play-offs and then the Europa Conference League play-offs.

They had already played nine times by the end of August before the first international break of the season.

Most of the squad have been getting a well-earned breather during the international break before they host Rangers this Saturday.

“Hopefully we can get to Europe again by doing well in the cups and finishing as high up the league as possible,” Muller said.

“We had not been used to playing two times a week – Thursday and Sunday. It was hard on the boys and a challenge.

“We really need to recover well and then go again. This break should have done us the world of good.

“We were annoyed we couldn’t head into it with a win but we’ll come back refreshed.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL KICK off a daunting September fixture schedule at one of the favourites for the Championship title when they go to The Hawthorns to face West Bromwich Albion this Saturday.

The Lions were boosted by the signing of attacking midfielder Sheyi Ojo on deadline day, though there are still injury concerns in the squad.

Millwall will definitely be without vice-captain Shaun Hutchinson and right wing-back Danny McNamara.

Ryan Leonard, ordinarily an option to replace McNamara, is unlikely to be ready after a hip injury. Likewise Mason Bennett is doubtful to make his first appearance of the season as he recovers from an ankle problem.

With Leonard likely to miss out, Billy Mitchell is set to start again on the right side of a back five.

Boss Gary Rowett will have his fingers crossed that Daniel Ballard – who scored his first international goal last week in a 4-1 win over Lithuania – and George Saville return from international duty with Northern Ireland without any problems.

The issue for them is they are set to have only one full training session with Millwall ahead of the Baggies game.

They were due to return to Calmont Road on Thursday after Wednesday evening’s World Cup qualifier against Switzerland in Belfast.

Ojo joined the squad for the first time late last week and gave his first impressions of the set-up.

“It’s my first day here and all the boys have been very welcoming,” he said. “I’ve spoken to the gaffer briefly as well and he has said positive things, so it’s been a good day and I’m looking forward to it.

“We spoke on the phone [before the move] and he said he really likes me as a player and has watched me for a couple of years now. He said he wants to give me the platform to express myself and show what I can do.

“The most important thing for me is to play football and show what I can do, and I’m thankful to Millwall who have given me the platform to do that.”

Ojo outlined what he can bring to the team: “Courage to get on the ball as much as I can, beat players and get a few goals and assists. I want to help my team in any way I can. I’ve been a team player over the last few years

Attacker nominated for award but suffers injury

Burey, 20, has experienced the major ups and downs of football in the space of a few weeks, after an assist and three goals in five league games and being nominated for the League Two player of the month award for August.

But that flying start with the newlypromoted Pools was brought to a halt after he suffered a hamstring tear in the second half of the 1-0 defeat at Tranmere last Saturday and went off in the 65th minute.

Hartlepool confirmed on Monday that

scan results revealed serious damage and he was seeing a specialist later in the week.

It’s a cruel blow for the player and the two clubs. Burey’s goals helped Dave Challinor’s side into the play-off places after five games and Burey’s temporary boss has been nominated for manager of the month in the fourth tier.

If Burey had been given the chance to continue that trajectory from August then he would have been in the frame for a recall in January to challenge for a place in Millwall’s first team.

And Hartlepool are now without their best attacker so far this season as they look to build on their excellent start.

Millwall confirmed that Burey would return to Hartlepool after his recovery.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FOR A lot of players, 1-0 down against ten men with less than half an hour to go in one of the country’s most intimidating stadiums, with your fans frustrated and edgy, wouldn’t be the ideal scenario.

Not so with Jed Wallace. In fact, he says he “thrives on it”.

Millwall were in that situation in their last game against Blackpool, a team Lions supporters would have expected their side to roll over, especially given the visitors had been a man down since the fourteenth minute.

That’s not just talk from Wallace.

There were 63 minutes on the clock as he stood over a free-kick with the home fans wondering where a goal was going to come from.

They needn’t have worried.

Wallace bent a superb effort past Seasiders goalkeeper Chris Maxwell into the top-left corner.

That relieved the anxiety in the ground, only for it to crank up again as the game ticked towards 90 minutes and there was still no sign of a winner.

But when the ball bounced out to the right following a corner the one Millwall

player you’d want to get there first did.

Wallace curled a brilliant cross back in and Jake Cooper headed home to blow the lid off the pressure cooker and clinch Millwall’s first three points of the season.

Wallace has been rising to these kinds of occasions for a long time now. He knows he’s going to be judged on end product, and his goal against Blackpool was his third of the season after doublefigures in consecutive campaigns.

He’s okay with that intense scrutiny.

“You’re always trying to be consistent,” Wallace tells the News. “I’ve definitely added that to my game, the last two years I’ve been more consistent in my performances.

“Sometimes you do just get judged on that final bit as an attacking player, and that’s fine. There have been times when I haven’t scored for ten games but played really well. Then you get four goals in ten games when you’re not playing well and everyone says you’re playing really well.

“You get judged for that final pass, that finish, but I enjoy the pressure of that.

I enjoyed the pressure in the stadium [against Blackpool] when it was maybe a little bit intense. I thrive on that pressure.

“I’ve missed having that pressure and that edge with fans in the stadium. It has fired me up even more to have a good start to the season.

“I like it. The Den’s an intimidating place but so is Fratton Park and I was

playing every week. We were losing games every week and I was playing every week at eighteen, nineteen in front of 18,000.

“I learned early in my career that was the level of pressure and it’s the same at Millwall. It’s a fanbase that demand effort and I’m always someone like the rest of the lads that give our all.

“Sometimes that pressure can drive you on. We used that against Blackpool to drive us on in the last half an hour. We played really well and we thoroughly deserved the win.

“It was important to get that win to ease a bit of pressure in the stands and on us as a team. Hopefully we can be a little bit more united together moving forward because when the fans are behind us at The Den and we’re playing well giving them sometime to cheer about, it’s one of the hardest places to go in the Championship, that’s for sure.”

Wallace has scored nine goals this calendar year, most from a position up front. But he is still a winger at heart.

“If you held a gun to my head and asked me my best position I’d probably say right wing,” he says. “Purely for the reason that’s where I’ve played most and have had success there.

“But I’ve scored quite a lot of goals playing through the middle as well. I know I can stretch defences.

“Ultimately people like myself, Murray

Wallace, sometimes when the formation might not necessarily suit you you’ve got to be a good professional and find a way to get into the team, however that is, and stay in the team.

“That led to me playing up front. I’ve created a lot of chances, scored a few goals from that position and especially when we’ve played on the counter-attack away from home it’s certainly suited me.

“I’m happy to play anywhere. I always back myself to score and create chances wherever I play. If the manager feels that formation suits us better as a team I’d much rather us be winning games than worry about whatever the formation is.”

Wallace is ambitious and perhaps more than any other player watched closely what the club were doing in the last transfer window. He wants to play in the Premier League, preferably with Millwall, but is in the final year of his contract.

He will be 28 at the end of this season with maybe one last chance of a big move. You couldn’t blame him if he waits to see how this season pans out, whether he can fulfil his ambitions with Millwall or whether he decides his time is up at The Den and he leaves on a free next summer.

But he was impressed with the Lions’ summer business.

“Signing Benik [Afobe] and Sav [George Saville], for Millwall they’re big

signings,” he says. “Bringing someone like Dan Ballard in as well, he’s been excellent so far.

“But with new signings and even with Sav coming back – I think of my second loan, it took me probably ten games to get going – sometimes when you come back people think you’re going to have instant success, but it’s not always that easy.

“Benik has started well and it was a good summer for the club. We’ve probably pushed the boundaries as much as we can and Sheyi [Ojo] coming in on deadline day was another exciting player that we needed.

“He’s been good. It’s an easy group to come into, the lads are really friendly.

Sometimes when Benno’s [Mason Bennett] been injured we’ve missed a little bit of pace in those final-third areas. Even if it’s off the bench, bringing in pace at this level is a major factor.

A lot of the top teams have that pace and power in the team. It’s important we have another option and another winger to add to me, Benno and Connor [Mahoney].

“It’s exciting, we’ve got four good players for those positions. It’s strong competition for places. As an attacker you’ve got to be creating chances, providing assists and scoring goals otherwise someone else will be taking your shirt.”

Lions supporters were relieved when the summer transfer window closed and the club had kept their best player, though there was never really any question he was going to leave.

Wallace said he had a “conversation” over a new deal earlier in the year but he

is leaving any further negotiations to the club and his representatives.

The attacker has already scored three times and got an assist this season as he aims for a third consecutive campaign in double-figures for goals.

Wallace has reiterated what he wants to help Millwall achieve.

“There was a conversation a few months ago and that’s been documented. I’m just doing what I do best, really,” Wallace said.

“I don’t have much expertise in contracts and negotiations. I’m just concentrating on playing football, playing the best I can.

My dream is to get Millwall promoted to the Premier League, I’ve never hidden away from that and I’m doing the best I

can to try and help us do that.

“All the rest is just chit-chat. Hopefully we can get a few more wins as quickly as possible and be where we should be, which is towards the top half of the table.”

Wallace was asked for the latest on his contract situation and how he sees it playing out.

He responded: “I don’t know, really, I’ve not thought about it much and I’ve not heard about it much. I’m just playing and I want people to judge me for what they see on the pitch.

“Don’t worry about what you read, judge me for what you see on the pitch.

“But that would never happen in a Millwall shirt, I will always give my all and that’s why I’ve got such a good affiliation with the club.

“I’ve played over 200 games for Millwall now. I’ve had a few bad games along the way but I’ve never shirked my responsibilities, I’ve always given my absolute all for Millwall.

“I think you saw that again against Blackpool. I ran until the last minute and gave everything I could.

“So, yeah, judge me on that rather than what you read in various media outlets that are trying to do their job.

“I’m just going to try and do mine and play football.”

Ojo, 24, was the Lions’ final signing of the summer transfer window after arriving on loan from Liverpool to give boss Gary Rowett another attacking option.

He hasn’t played a senior competitive game since coming on as a substitute for Cardiff against Rotherham on May 8.

But he did feature for Liverpool’s under-23s before his switch to south London. Ojo met his new team-mates last week and has impressed at Calmont Road.

“He’s been training with Liverpool but hasn’t played lots and lots of pre-season games so we’ll have to look at that and assess how the weekend will look for him,” Rowett said.

“But he’ll certainly be in contention and he’ll certainly be in the squad, that’s why we brought him into the group.

“He’s looked good in training, he’s got great athleticism and a real turn of speed. You can see his quality as well.
