Activists first blocked Tower Bridge on Monday afternoon from about 2.30pm until about 8.30pm. Some eleven members of the group, also known as XR, were arrested on Monday as police officers attempted to clear the bridge and get cars moving again. The protest caused major disruption in the area on Monday afternoon.

The group said this protest would be the first in a series of events specifically targeting City financiers.

“XR have closed Tower Bridge with a caravan and a large group are sitting blocking the junction at the north side of the bridge.

“The actions mark the start of a week-long intervention on the City of London. The City is a root cause of the climate and ecological emergency. If it were a country, it would be the ninth biggest carbon emitter on the planet.

“Not one of the top 10 funders in the City has made a serious plan to exit fossil fuels, despite having pledged to go net-zero by 2050.”

Police closed off the area of Tower Bridge Road to stop people approaching the protest.

Protesters were finally removed by about 8.30pm on Monday night, meaning they were in place for about six hours.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “Officers were on scene almost immediately.

We are working with City police to get traffic moving again. Activists are also laying on the junction north of Tower Bridge, this is causing further disruption.”

some protesters had walked from Tower Bridge to Blackfriars Bridge, which they briefly succeeded in blocking before being removed by officers.

At least 469 activists have been arrested so far since the latest wave of protests began in London on August 22.

The group caused major disruption again on Tuesday afternoon, blocking off the southern end of London Bridge. The road was cleared again by 7.30pm. Extinction Rebellion said the police response to their protest was “heavyhanded” and “disturbing”, as officers climbed the bus they were using to block the bridge and were more “aggressive” with the way they removed protesters.

Police said they were using “reasonable and proportionate” force, given activists were trying to block a very busy thoroughfare.

Officers said: “There have been some questions today on our use of force while attempting to disrupt the protest involving Extinction Rebellion’s bus.

“It is very clear that the demo near London Bridge was an attempt to cause a major disruption to one of London’s busiest bridges.

“Seeing this, officers nearby took immediate action to prevent any unreasonable disruption to the highway, and to detain those attempting to cause disruption or who were obstructing officers in the lawful execution of their duty.

“We believe this swift action prevented some protesters from setting up further complex lock-on devices which were inside the bus.

“Given the circumstances and likely disruption to the community, our initial assessment is that their use of force was reasonable and proportionate.”

Officers had arrested 43 protesters by 6.45pm on Tuesday. More protests are expected in London through the rest of the week.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk East Dulwich runner Columba Blango Junior came home in third place in the 400 metres final at the Paralympics on Tuesday, August 31.

Columba, 29, finished with a personal best of 47.81 in Tokyo, just a tenth of a second behind Luis Felipe Rodriguez Bolivar in second place.

First place went to the Frenchman CharlesAntoine Kouakou, who finished with a time of 47.63 seconds.

He was competing in the T20 category for people with intellectual disabilities. This was Columba's first Paralympics. He finished second in his heat on Monday, August 31.

Columba said: “For a first Paralympic final, that was very good."

“I could see the Spanish athlete [Deliber Rodriguez Ramirez] slowing down so I just told myself, ‘you’ve got this’.

“I just kept going, I am so pleased to win a medal. This was a tough race, it was a whole different level from the heat yesterday.

“My dad always said one day I would make it and he was right. It was such a different experience to anything I had experienced before, so it is definitely a race of a lifetime.”

The race caps an outstanding summer for Columba, who won the 400 metre race at the European Para Athletic Championships in June, breaking the European record in the process.

His father, Columba Blango Sr., told the News in the run-up to the race that Columba Jr. was hopeful for a medal.

"I believe he is having the time of his life..., which has been his dream, hence all the hard work and commitment," he said.

After the race Columba Sr., a former Olympic athlete himself, added: "From the entire Blango family, congratulations to Columba Blango Jnr. on his brilliant performance today in the 400m T20 at the Tokyo Paralympic games. He ran a

fantastic race and did his utmost best. So good for a personal best and a bronze medal.

His personal effort, commitment, dedication and self discipline have paid off. To get a medal at that level in your first Paralympic Games is a phenomenal achievement. Things can only get better from that point. Well done boy."

Columba Jr. grew up in south London and still lives in East Dulwich with his family, working in Primark in Peckham part-time while training.

His father took part in the decathlon at the 1980 Olympics for Sierra Leone. He later moved to London and became a Liberal Democrat councillor in Southwark, and served as mayor of the borough.

Columba Jr. was in intensive care for about four weeks after being born, after suffering blood clots on his brain due to a difficult birth.

He was left with speech and cognitive problems.

Columba Jr. was unable to speak until the age of six, but with help from NHS therapists and staff at St John’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Rotherhithe, he largely overcame his problems. He still has some cognitive issues, which qualify him for the T20 category.

He went on to study Tourism Management at Greenwich University before going back into training alongside work.

To help keep London moving safely we are proposing to increase the penalty charge fine for people who fail to follow the rules of the red route network (ie those roads we manage in London) from £130 to £160. This would be reduced to £80 if paid within 14 days.

Use ‘right to buy back’ to help refugees says Mayor

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Sadiq Khan has announced details of new support for Afghan refugees arriving in London after fleeing the Taliban.

Last week the mayor encouraged councils to use his expanded ‘right to buy back’ fund, which helps local authorities buy ex council homes back from private use, to provide accommodation for resettled Afghans.

He has also pledged to provide funding for larger, family-sized homes through the scheme.

Khan has welcomed the government’s commitment to resettle up to 20,000 Afghan refugees in particular danger

from the Taliban, but has said councils will need more support to provide them with accommodation, healthcare and education.

“It has been devastating to watch the crisis unfold in Afghanistan and I’m determined to do everything in my power to support those escaping the country,” Khan said last Thursday, August 26.

“London has a proud history of providing sanctuary to those in need and by working together we can help these refugees find a welcoming home in our city.

“That’s why I’m inviting borough councils to use my right to buy back fund to acquire homes for refugees, as well as Londoners in housing need, and

am urging housing associations to bid for funding to secure homes for these families.

“I will continue to call on ministers to provide the further support needed to help them secure their long-term future in our city.”

Dr Nooralhaq Nasimi, director of Afghanistan and Central Asian Association, said: “With the crisis unfolding in Afghanistan many Afghan refugees will be desperately looking for a safe place to call home.

“I am proud that the mayor of London and London councils are leading the way in welcoming Afghan refugees and taking active steps to help accommodate them when they arrive and seek to build new lives in the city.”

Young's said in its planning application to add an extra bar and dining area that the extension would create 22 jobs at the peak of summer business. The company also pointed out that pubs have been hit hard in the Covid-19 and investment like this scheme is key for the sector.

Locals who had objected to the plan said they were "relieved and grateful" following the decision.

John Baldock, a resident of Falcon Point, added: "We are very glad that Southwark Council has refused further expansion. The Founders Arms is open until midnight at weekends and Falcon Point residents are currently suffering considerable noise from late-night

drinkers around the pub until well into the small hours.

Liz Loughran, a town planner who advised Falcon Point residents on the case, said the decision could prove influential in further cases that pit developers against people living locally.

"The decision shows how Councils can protect the amenity and health of the local population against potential harm from new development," she said in an email. "Across London and the UK a new method of assessment to protect the amenity of neighbours has been enshrined in national planning policy.

"This policy has come from the World Health Organisation. It addresses the effect of noise and disruption and the risk of harm to health arising from disruption to sleep or psychological stress caused by operational activities of developers."

"The onus is now on a developer to show how it can mitigate such risk and if it cannot, planning permission should be refused by Councils.

A spokesperson for Young's said: "After extensive consultation with planning officers and the local community, Young’s is disappointed that the council has refused our plans to sensitively extend and improve the Founder’s Arms.

“We’re now taking time to carefully review the decision.”

Bankside boozer’s plans rejected

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A controversial plan to expand a pub near Blackfriars Bridge has been thrown out by Southwark Council, after complaints from locals who were concerned about the extra noise costing them sleep, and losing their views of the Thames.

Council plans said a proposal to expand the capacity of the Founder's Arms to by an extra 100 people ran the risk of creating "harmful noise impacts" and "anti social behaviour" that would affect people living in the nearby Falcon Point flats.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Peckham Levels is hosting two fundraisers for Afghanistan next Friday, featuring some of the UK’s best up-and-coming and established electronic artists.

All proceeds from the live events will be donated to Afghanaid and help pay for urgent, life-saving assistance for men, women and children caught up in the conflict whether through emergency shelter, food parcels, blankets, towels, solar lights or hygiene products.

The fundraisers are organised by #LIVEFORLOVE, a campaign set up during lockdown in March 2020, initially streaming music to raise funds for food banks. So far the campaign has raised over £46,000 to date for the Trussell Trust. “#LIVEFORLOVE was founded when our industry was completely put on hold during the first lockdown of 2020,” said co-founder William Wallace.

“It was built on the belief that it was important to still bring people together, reconnect through music and support the most vulnerable in our society at the same time.

“We’ve grabbed an opportunity to try and support those in need in Afghanistan and hope that by hosting these two events we will be able to contribute to making a difference.”

Held on Friday, September 3, the fundraiser is split into two sessions.

The first includes a series of talks and live music in the early evening at Coffee & Cocktails in Peckham Levels, from 6.30pm.

Speakers including Safe Passages CEO Beth Gardiner-Smith, and Shukrullah Ludin, the director of Labour Friends of Afghanistan.

Bermondsey driver clocking up over 120mph gets nearly £2k fine

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey resident has been hit with a fine of more than £1,900 and disqualified from driving for eight weeks after driving his sports car at over 120mph.

Howard Mears, who lives in Shad Thames, was fined £1,667 for driving his McLaren at 124mph on the M1 near

Northampton in September last year.

Northampton Magistrates’ Court also ordered Mears to pay a victim surcharge of £166 and costs of £85, taking his total payments to £1,918. He was banned from driving for 56 days. The court took his guilty plea into account when sentencing him.

The victim surcharge is a payment that goes towards helping victims of crime.

South London police officer keeps his job after sending ‘homophobic email’

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Met Police officer for Southwark and Lambeth has been given a final written warning after he sent an email with "homophobic content" to 55 colleagues.

PC David Bewick of the Central South Command Unit was found to have breached the Met's standards of professional behaviour at a hearing on Thursday (August 26).

PC Bewick sent the email, which also contained an attachment, from his work account on October 13 2019,

according to the police. The Met did not provide further details of the "homophobic content".

The emails were reported to internal authorities more than two weeks later, on October 30 2019. PC Bewick was placed on restricted duties.

Chief Inspector Matt Cox, DPS, said: “The Met will not tolerate the sharing of any material that could be deemed as discriminatory and it is especially shocking when Met systems are used for this purpose.

“We expect all of our officers to uphold our high standards of behaviour and will take action when those standards are not met.”

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Residents of a Bermondsey estate have been living through months of leaks, and have spoken of their despair at getting the problem fixed.

As many as five households in Arica House on the Slippers Place Estate have had water flooding into their flats in recent months, apparently because of problems with a pipe running through the building.

Ali Ince, a leaseholder, is “really drained” by the constant worry of flooding in his flat. He said the leak has been a problem, on and off, since February this year.

Mr Ince works as an Uber driver during the day. But because of the leak, he has five buckets that he has to change three times a day. “If he does take the risk of going out to work, he constantly thinks about having to come home to a flood,” a friend explained on behalf of Mr Ince, who can struggle with English.

Mr Ince and others affected in the building, including council tenants, say they have been contacting Southwark Council for months in an attempt to get

the problem sorted. Emails seen by the News show repeated efforts by residents to alert council officers to the problem.

Residents said council staff have visited on several occasions since the leaks began, but the problems have persisted.

The flooding in Mr Ince’s kitchen has got so bad that council officers have had to turn the electricity off, leaving the room in the dark. Pictures taken by residents appear to show significant water damage in flats, and mould forming in some cases.

Mr Ince’s downstairs neighbour, a council tenant who asked to remain anonymous, said his problems were slightly less bad, but he was frustrated by Southwark’s response.

“It took me ten days to get a plumber round,” he said. “We’ve all gone through the same process. When the plumber does eventually come, he takes a look and goes to the flat above.

“But they don’t sort out the actual root problem. The leak is never sorted. The problem is a bit more involved and tricky in this case so you’ve got no chance.”

Southwark Council was contacted for more information on what is being done to tackle the leaks in Arica House.

30 new flats, but at what cost? asks mum

Timmi Sample has lived in temporary accommodation in Hickling House on the Slippers Place Estate for several years. Her daughter Ruby, 15, has Rett syndrome, a very rare condition that means she is in a wheelchair and is “totally dependent” on her mother and carers to survive. She often needs extra oxygen to breathe properly and suffers from seizures.

As we reported last week, Southwark Council plans to build eighteen council

homes in a new block on the Slippers Place Estate, to help meet the huge local housing need. A planning application has been submitted and a decision is expected next month.

Some on the estate are opposed to the new build because they are worried about the potential loss of light and parking from the new building, although a report submitted as part of the application said “there will… be no adverse impact on neighbouring residents in terms of daylight”.

Timmi’s concerns are about her daughter rather than the light. Ruby has suffered hugely in the Covid-19 lockdowns because it has been difficult to get her the in-person medical attention she needs, Timmi said, and her condition has massively deteriorated.

In September Ruby was hospitalised with double pneumonia and only two per cent of her right lung now works.

“I thought I was going to have to say

goodbye there and then,” Timmi said.

Timmi is worried that the extra dust and noise that may be caused by the building work could be bad for Ruby’s fragile health, given her lungs are so weak. “It’s very dangerous for her what they’re doing. I’m so worried about the effect this will have on Ruby,” Timmi said.

The council said that builders would keep to a code of conduct that minimises noise and dust, although some other developments in the borough have not always stuck to agreed rules.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “Our housing team is working to assist Ms Sample and her daughter in moving from temporary accommodation into suitable permanent housing. They’re currently looking for properties in the borough that meet their needs and will be in touch to discuss these further with Ms Sample.”

Despite being contacted prior to last week’s four-page feature which detailed the location of every infill, rooftop and garage redevelopment at various stages of planning permission across the borough, both Harman and Hayes have yet to share their views.

Although Dulwich has comparatively few infill projects, likely due to the council owning less land than in the north of the borough, Harman’s Camberwell and Peckham constituency has become something of a flashpoint for high-profile and hugely controversial projects.

The long-serving MP and ‘mother of the House of Commons’ has yet to publicly comment on the new homes under construction on the Flaxyard site, known more widely as Peckham Green, or on any

campaigns in estates including Elmington - where residents are fighting to save a patch of locked up greenery by Lomond Grove.

The only MP to reply to our query last week was Bermondsey and Old Southwark’s Neil Coyle, who said it was “overly simplistic to treat infill as one policy - each building and site are different.”

Although he is unable to ‘call in’ planning decisions, unlike ward councillors, he says he has met with residents from estates to help provide advice and resources to those engaging with the planning process.

“I’ve had some campaigners tell me there is no support for infill homes - it is an interesting view that no one wants new housing, that’s not the reality in my inbox or in my constituency,” he explained, adding that he believed despite some vocal campaigns against development, a majority of residents did back building new council homes on existing estates where possible.

“Southwark Labour is doing more than any council in the country for house building,” he said. “In some cases it needs tweaking but overall I think the public do support it.”

Ms Yenil told a hair-raising story of how when the flooding first happened a few weeks ago, she was carrying her five-month old baby through the flat. “I was taking my son to the bedroom and suddenly I slipped on my laminated flooring, and I smacked my five-month old son’s head on the floor.

“I didn’t know that it was flooded, I just wanted to get my son back into his cot.

That’s hurt me, that’s hurt my son. I’ve had enough. I literally hate living here. I hate my own home.”

Ms Yenil’s other children are affected in different ways. One daughter has a heart condition that her mother says makes her vulnerable to the damp that is now accumulating. Another child is autistic and is upset by the frequent drilling noise.

“They expect people to still live in their house when that noise is still going on,” Ms Yenil said. “It feels like 100 men with 10,000 hammer drills are in my house.”

As well as concerns about her children’s health and wellbeing, Ms Yenil said that several of her valuable belongings have been damaged in the flooding.

“My mum, who has passed away, bought me this chandelier. It wasn’t cheap but it’s had to go now because the water damaged all the wires inside when the rain came through.”

Videos shared by Ms Yenil show water dripping from the ceiling and damp stains streaking down the walls, buckets and towels she has had to put down “All they’ve said is I’m sorry,” she said.

“Sorry isn’t good enough any more. They’re not the ones who have to live like this.”

A spokesperson from LSHA and Apex Airspace said: “The existing roofs, which were already due for major rework, were removed with minimum disturbance.

Unfortunately the temporary roofs were unable to cope with the extreme rainfall recently and a small number of homes experienced some minor rainwater ingress.

“We acted quickly, liaising immediately with residents to ascertain the extent of the damage caused and our contractor is in the process of remedial works to redecorate and replace any damages. We apologise for the inconvenience and wish to reassure residents the waterproofing was quickly fixed with no more leakages reported since.

“The project will provide 30 much needed affordable homes and also offer improvements to current accommodation including the introduction of a lift, a new communal entrance, a landscaped forecourt, extra lighting, cycle storage and better refuse and recycling spaces.’’

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey woman has spoken of her “horror” as water came pouring through the ceiling of her top floor flat while builders were working on an “airspace” extension on the roof.

Zeynep Yenil, who lives in Roderick House on Raymouth Road, said she and her four young children - including a baby - have been forced to “live through a nightmare” in recent weeks because of work done by developers Apex Airspace to her block, alongside landlords Lambeth and Southwark Housing Association (LSHA).

Apex Airspace and LSHA are adding 30 more affordable flats to Roderick House and Anthony House. They told residents earlier that the building work – which is set to last about a year – should cause “minimal disturbance” to current residents. Many were offered some compensation.

But we reported how people living in the flats had holes drilled through their ceilings by builders, and had to endure noise that they said reached harmful levels - making their lives “a living hell” in some cases, especially as this was still in a time of Covid-19 restrictions.

RSPCA appeal after kitten is thrown over park railings

kit@southwarknews.co.uk The damage to the Bermondsey war memorial appears to have been caused by someone setting fire to a wreath on the monument, police have said.

The vandalism incident took place in the early hours of last Tuesday morning week (August 24) and has been roundly condemned by local residents and politicians. No arrests have been made but the News understands the culprits may have been caught on CCTV in local shops.

A spokesperson for the Met said last Thursday (August 26): "Police in Southwark are investigating an incident of criminal damage to a local war memorial.

"The damage appears to have been caused by a wreath being set on fire at the war memorial at West Lane, SE16 in the early hours of Tuesday, 24 August.

"Officers from South Bermondsey safer neighbourhood team and borough partners have been made aware and an investigation has been launched by detectives from Central South Command.

"There have been no arrests.

Enquiries are underway to identify any potential suspects."

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police have caught a teenager cycling with a loaded gun as he was riding down Coldharbour Lane.

The boy, 17, was going down Coldharbour Lane between Camberwell and Brixton on his bike when officers tried to stop him. The teenager got away at first before being stopped.

Officers said he tried to throw away a bag, which police picked up. Inside officers found a loaded pistol. The boy was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and possession of ammunition and is now in custody in a south London police station.

Officers from the Met’s Specialist Crime Command are leading the investigation.

Detective Constable Catrin Edwards, the investigating officer, said: “Thanks to my colleagues from the Violent Crime Task

Volunteers for cannabis dementia trial

Wingrove, the Met's commander for the central south area of London, said the force were open-minded about the motivation for the crime and that there is nothing at this stage to indicate any element of racial or cultural motivation.

It came after dozens of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe residents gathered for two minutes' silence at the West Lane war memorial last Wednesday evening (August 25).

Local people laid wreaths at the war memorial and vowed "not to let them win," referring to the person or people who set fire to the memorial in the

early hours of Tuesday morning. The event was organised by Jill Merrett, who runs the local poppy appeal, as well as her deputies Ken Higgins and Geraldine Howard.

Pearly King and Queen of Bermondsey Jimmy Jukes and Michelle Thorpe also took part, as well as former local MP Sir Simon Hughes.

The West Lane monument, which commemorates the sacrifice of local people in both world wars, was unveiled in 1921 and is Grade II-listed.

It was cleaned the same day as the vandalism by council workers.

Inspector Harriet Daliday, who picked her up and took her to safety, said: “This poor female tabby and white cat was found soaking wet with a broken plastic cat carrier.

“We believe she had been inside the carrier when she was thrown over some railings and dumped.

“This was a callous and cruel thing to do, which meant this poor cat could have been seriously hurt and was left shivering, weak and alone.

“We know that people’s circumstances can change which may mean they can no longer care for their pet, but there is never an excuse to abandon an animal like this.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Volunteers are needed to take part in a King’s College Hospital trial of a potential new cannabisbased treatment to relieve dementia symptoms.

Researchers are keen for people living in London care homes to join phase II of the Sativex® trial, an oral spray made from cannabis compounds which could help treat symptoms of agitation and aggression in dementia patients.

Around half of people living with dementia experience these symptoms, which can be particularly challenging for their families and carers.

To date there have been no studies looking at the potential benefits of this medicine for people with dementia, and there are some important questions that need to be answered before large-scale studies can be done.

The trial, which is being funded by Alzheimer’s Research UK, will also investigate how easy it is to run a trial across multiple nursing homes, which will help them to best design a larger phase III clinical trial.

Researchers are inviting people with Alzheimer’s disease between the ages of 55 and 90 to take part in the study. They must be resident in a care home within greater London, clinically diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and experiencing

regular anxiety, agitation and/or aggressive behaviours.

Volunteers will either receive a course of treatment with the cannabinoidbased medicine, which is given as an oral spray, or a dummy treatment known as a placebo. Those selected to take part in the trial will take part for four weeks and will begin the study on a low dose (1 spray per day), building up to the top dose of four sprays a day by week three.

The Alzheimer’s Research UK funded researcher Chris Albertyn, who is running the study, said: “This phase II clinical trial is an important stepping stone on the way to a potential new medicine for dementia.

“We will compare the results from those taking the medicine and those taking the dummy drug, to help determine whether the medicine is safe and well-tolerated.

“An additional aim will be to take a look at whether there may be any positive benefits for those taking the medicine, such as improving quality of life and reducing associated distress for those caring for them.

“We would love to see care home residents in greater London, or nearby, who are experiencing regular anxiety or agitation with Alzheimer’s disease to take part in this research. If you, a loved one or someone you know could benefit from this opportunity, please get in contact with the team.”

Katie Puckering, head of information services at Alzheimer’s Research UK said: “While a major focus for dementia research is to develop drugs that slow or stop the progression of the physical diseases that cause dementia, what really matters is that a medicine benefits people’s day-to-day lives.

“This is a rigorous clinical trial of a medication that has been carefully prepared, and which will be tested in circumstances where the health and wellbeing of participants can be closely monitored.

“There are never enough people involved in dementia research: we desperately need more volunteers to help take on what is the greatest medical challenge of the 21st century.”

Shepherdess to lead flock over Thames

Amanda Owen, who appears on Channel 5 as the Yorkshire Shepherdess, is coming to the borough on September 26 to lead the procession over the bridge, which symbolises the right of the freemen of the City of London to drive sheep into the City. You can become a freeman by paying a fee or you can be made one as a reward for public service.

The annual event is organised by the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, the 2021 Sheep Drive and Livery Fair. Now in its ninth year, previous leaders of the procession have been TV gardener Alan Titchmarsh and former politician

Michael Portillo.

Amanda Owen said: “When the Sheep Drive & Livery Fair invited me to be their guest, saying yes was an easy decision to make. This event is so prestigious to be involved in, one which carries years of history and I’m so proud to be able to lead the first drive of sheep across Southwark Bridge on 26th September.

"Sheep are central to my life and this celebration of them will be a day to remember.”

The Livery Fair is a showcase for many of the UK's 110 traditional livery companies to demonstrate their ancient and modern skills. The fair will also have stalls showing how the importance of wool.

Alderman Sir David Wootton, Master of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, said: “We are delighted to welcome Amanda Owen to shepherd our sheep expertly over Southwark Bridge.

made of silk rather than rope if they were convicted of a crime and sentenced to death by hanging.

Freemen were entitled to ‘carry a naked sword in public’. If found to be ‘drunk and incapable’ by the City of London Police, a Freeman would be sent home rather than to the cells overnight.

join the New community Choir launching in Rotherhithe A newly-formed choir in Rotherhithe is asking people to come lend their voices.

Starling Arts is launching a south London choir in SE16 this month, as well as a north London counterpart in the Finsbury Park area.

The choir will be based at the Bubble Theatre on Elephant Lane from September 23. There are no auditions to join and you don't have to read sheet music or be an experienced singer to take part.

Rehearsals will be from 7.30-9.30pm on Thursday evenings. The choir will be singing pop and rock songs, as well as some numbers from musicals.

The choir will take part in a range of concerts, from big theatres to smaller venues. Choirs have toured Paris and Ghent in Belgium in recent years.

Members can also choose to sing at charity events like Christmas carols and smaller performances in care homes.

The Evelina 1+ Art scheme, which included the ideas of children, young people, and staff, was highly commended at the European Healthcare Design awards this year.

The art project, designed by community art team Art in Site, included designing special rails mounted to the ceiling above beds, and magnetic wallpaper to allow patients to attach items from home.

Patients said this helped their recovery following heart surgery because they felt like they were in a familiar environment.

Liz O’Sullivan, arts manager at Evelina London, said: “Looking after the wellbeing of children, young

people and their families goes far beyond medical care at Evelina London. The environment we create through digital installations, murals, and graphics in our wards and clinics plays an essential role in supporting our families during their visits or stays with us. Our artwork does much more than create a cheery or calming environment. It can bring a sense of comfort, provide entertainment and help with recovery.

“It is an integral part of the design process for new facilities at Evelina London, and we are currently working with children, young people and staff to create artwork for our new day surgery building.”

The new centre, which is right next to the existing building, will open in 2022. It will let Evelina surgeons operate on more children and young people.

‘I can’t wait to start big school’ A Bermondsey school held a series of summer events last week to welcome new students, including an inflatable assault course and a mini-Olympics.

Students about to start at Compass School on Drummond Road were able to take part in a variety of bonding sessions throughout the week from August 23-27, including creating a play in a day, wellness classes, and even a carnival on Friday.

One student said, 'I have been excited all summer but I'm even more excited now!'

Emma Walkey-Williams, assistant principal for community, said: "To see our new students and their families having fun, enjoying getting to know each other, is wonderful. The students have had an incredible week, leaving every day with a smile, eager to come back the next. We cannot wait for September!"

King’s among top hospitals for neurosurgery research

King's College Hospital has been ranked among the top hospitals for research on neurosurgery in a ten-year study.

The neurosurgery team at the Denmark Hill hospital ranked third out of more than 30 neurosurgery centres in the UK for their academic and research output between 2011 and 2020, according to data collected by the Web of Science database.

Neurosurgeons operate on the nervous system, which includes the brain and the spinal cord. Research is important because it helps improve treatment for people with problems with their nervous system.

Keyoumars Ashkan, Professor of Neurosurgery and Academic Lead at King’s, thanked staff for their work

and patients for volunteering to take part in trials.

“This is really positive news and a big credit for the neurosurgical team at King’s, as well as the patients we treat, and the communities we serve," he said.

“The very best centres in the world combine high quality patient care with research to further their knowledge of the brain and its disorders. This is the key to bringing in new and novel therapies for our patients; after all, they deserve nothing less.

“We are only able to do this at King’s through the support of our colleagues and, as important, the willingness of patients to participate in research and clinical trials.”

Africa Day celebration

Walworth’s Kaleidoscope Festival is putting on a special Africa Day celebration at St Peter’s Church next month.

Sowing roots: the new caribbean exhibition The Garden Museum in south London is planning an exhibition and a series of events on the gardening practices of Caribbean immigrants to south London, as documented by young people.

The Sowing Roots project aims to look at how the horticultural knowledge and traditions of the Windrush generation shaped their experience of migrating to the UK, what plants and foods Caribbean migrants grew when they came to this country, and how this affected the wider British understanding of gardening.

The free exhibition opens on

October 25 in the Garden Museum on Lambeth Palace Road.

Sowing Roots will also train people between the ages of 15 and 21 in developing and conducting oral history interviews, introduce them to Caribbean horticultural history, and help them gain experience curating historical artefacts.

The project is being led by researchers Dr Ekua McMorris and Dr Elizabeth Cooper, in collaboration with the Garden Museum Head of Learning Janine Nelson and oral historian Jen Kavanagh. It was funded with a grant the National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded to the Garden Museum in 2019.

Held on Saturday, September 11, and run by local volunteers, the event will see St Peter’s Church grounds transformed with a free community event for all the family from midday until 5pm, including stalls; bric-a-brac; a tombola; live African music and dance; free kids activities; African and Caribbean food; performances; face painting; art workshops and heritage talks; DJs and world music and a model railway.

Kaleidoscope was set up in 2019 by residents to celebrate the diversity of Walworth and Aylesbury estate.

Africa Day is being held with St Peter’s Walworth and Notting Hill Genesis.

Festival chair, Lorraine Gilbert, said: “We are excited to welcome Aylesbury residents and people from the wider Walworth area to what is going to be an exciting, fun packed community-led event.

“A celebration like this is a great opportunity to recognise the rich diversity of the local area and the very fabric of the local community, particularly given the challenges of the last eighteen months.”

Mother Delorine, from St Peter’s, said of the event: “This is an amazing opportunity for St Peter’s to collaborate with Kaleidoscope at this community event.

“It brings together the best of partnerships, within Walworth to ensure the community is at the heart of things.

After a year and a half of a pandemic, we have a time to come together and celebrate

the good things in our community.

wenty years of progress for the people of Afghanistan is now swept away.

Two decades which, after the ending of the previous Taliban rule, saw a measure of social and political progress including girls going to school, women going to work and able to play their part in public life. Now, the barbarity of the Taliban regime is back with public executions, beating of women accused of adultery, snatching of young girls to be raped as “child brides”, stoning of gay people and silencing of journalists.

They’ve pledged not to return to their former ways.

But no-one believes them.

It is inexplicable that our government were taken completely by surprise by the speed of the Taliban advance and the collapse of the Afghan army.

Was our intelligence so inadequate?

And it is inexcusable that, as the Taliban closed in on Kabul, the foreign secretary was on holiday in

August has been similar but with cooler conditions - more autumnlike with a mix of sunshine, heavy showers and chillier day and night-time temperatures. Six weeks or so after the longest day sunset is now noticeably earlier.

It is shocking to now hear reports that the thousands of emails from me and other MPs about our constituents who desperately needed evacuation were not even opened and read, let alone acted on. And it is unforgivable that the government is cutting our overseas aid budget at a time when so many in Afghanistan now face hardship and even starvation.

The government will have to give their answers to an emergency session of parliament’s foreign affairs select committee.

Amidst the misery and darkness of unfolding events in Afghanistan we can’t just wring our hands and despair. So many people have expressed their backing for the refugees. I’ve received nearly 600 supportive emails and people are

donating to charities working both here and in Afghanistan.

St Giles Church threw open their doors for a meeting for the anxious Southwark Afghan community who came to tell me, Helen Hayes MP and leading councillors, what was happening to their relatives in Kabul and Jalalabad.

Southwark council have swung into action to issue a declaration of solidarity and make plans to welcome and resettle refugees who come to our borough.

Women MPs have put party considerations aside to express their solidarity with the 69 Afghan women MPs and the brave women activists.

I will continue to work with the Afghan community here, press the government for more support for them and press our ministers to work internationally to do what they can to protect the Afghan people from the terrible actions of the Taliban.

The blame for the horrific suicide bomb killings at the gates of Kabul Airport lies squarely with the terrorist group ISIS. The fear gripping those left behind in Kabul is because of the Taliban. But the government too, bare some responsibility. They didn’t care enough and they weren’t prepared enough. And for that, they must be held to account.

Our hearts go out to the families in our armed services who lost their lives in Afghanistan and those who sustained terrible injuries. They fearlessly played their part in enabling 20 years of progress and faced great danger evacuating tens of thousands of refugees. They deserve nothing but our admiration and gratitude.

Enjoy the wealth of colourful summer flowers, before the shades of autumn - unless they are the type that have decorative hips in autumn such as Rosa rugosa, Rosa multiflora or Rosa canina.

Summer pruning can be carried out on the hybrid tea roses - remove new growth from beneath the main flowering stem to ensure energy is not diverted which would reduce overall flowering. (Main pruning can be done in mid-September depending on the type of rose).

Some rose varieties like the Hybrid teas are difficult to grow successfully due to their susceptibility to pests and diseases. But there are many different types of roses and when choosing a variety, it is best to ensure the location is suitable – know your rose type and the care required. The ‘Old Roses’ are well worth considering; they are split into varieties - Damask, Alba, Centifolia and Gallica - then ‘summer flowering’ and ‘repeat summer flowering’. As the name indicates they are old varieties (mostly introduced in the 1800s); most are highly perfumed with interesting flower

forms and colours. ‘Rose De Rescht’ - is an Old Rose variety with small magenta flowers and a strong fragrance. It does repeat flower (not all the old types do).

Generally, roses need to be fed twice a year starting March/ April and then again in early July.

Planting season starts in October – and so think about choosing a rose for the garden or container.

Deadhead Geraniums, Fuchsias and Petunias regularly to encourage flowering through the remaining weeks of summer. Continue to feed container and window box plants (as per product label instructions).

The herbaceous beds and borders are full of flowering annuals and perennials - Cosmos, Gladiola, Dahlias, the smaller types of sunflowers and Dianthus.

The familiar giant annual Sunflowers grown as specimens or in groups are a joy with their large yellow heads.

Bermondsey infill: Slippers Place residents slam plans for new council homes I was at Slippers Place last week. The impact of the proposed building on people’s privacy and daylight is disgusting. I think the council and the architects should do a proper consultation with a site visit with residents.

The build is so close to homes that it is quite right the dust etc will have a detrimental effect on anyone with respiratory problems, plus noise pollution.

Proper consultation is needed but alas this is not Southwark council’s forte.

Friend of man who died after Bermondsey e-scooter crash calls for stricter ban It’s pretty sad that more mainstream media aren’t reporting on these E-Scooters, thanks for doing this. I have many, many films from my CCTV outside my business in Loampit Vale, Lewisham, showing E- scooter riders some doing 20mph, plus riding past on the pavement, cyclists too, but Lewisham police are doing nothing. Sadiq Khan meanwhile still supports their use and has ignored my tweets about these. It’s tragic.

Locals lay wreaths at Bermondsey war memorial after attempt to burn it down After reading this article I am very disappointed that Jill Merritt who is the area’s poppy appeal manager is not mentioned. I assure you that it was Jill who arranged this gathering and no one else. It was Jill who contacted a local Councillor to get the memorial cleaned, reported it to the police and along with Jill myself and Ken Higgins who are deputies went over Tuesday night and placed poppies on the chains.

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe war memorial vandalised This is not a statue of a slave-trader who dealt in the misery of other human beings. This is not a statue of a racist warmonger. This is a monument erected 100 years ago to the local men who gave their lives for their country. A monument sponsored by local businessmen for local people.

Extinction Rebellion aren’t interested in popularity

W

hat is the point of Extinction Rebellion? Is it to create headlines and fill newspapers with now-familiar photos of activists being led away by police officers? Or is it something more concrete? On the group’s website, they say they want the government and financial services companies to stop all investment in fossil fuels by the end of the year.

This seems an ambitious but admirable goal, and one that the government and most British people would be broadly sympathetic with. Most of us agree that man-made climate change is a problem and it would be good to do something about it - and soon.

Politically, climate change is no longer an issue of debate among any of the major parties. The UK is hosting the UN’s climate change conference COP26 in November and has called for net zero carbon emissions globally by 2050. We ourselves have committed to cutting emissions by 68 per cent by 2030 and 78 per cent by 2035, before reaching zero by the middle of the century.

Of course, Extinction Rebellion say that this is all too slow and we must do more. It’s easy to make commitments for years down the road when a different government will be in place, but we need action now. They want the UK to commit to net zero by 2025.

But is the group’s time-honoured tactic of blocking roads and disrupting public transport a good way of achieving this? The short-term reaction from the public appears to be negative.

YouGov, the polling organisation, says that just 19 per cent of people it surveyed were in favour of the group, compared to 35 per cent who disliked them.

Does that matter? Since forming in 2018, Extinction Rebellion have brought the issue of climate change, whose major effects can sometimes feel distant and abstract, to the streets of the capital in a stark and memorable way. They alienate, confuse and annoy many, but that is the point, at least partly.

An Extinction Rebellion activist recently wrote to the New Statesman magazine to say that the group “does not aim to win a popularity contest, it aims to be effective.” Only time will tell if they succeed.

Skins and Suedes: An Era Defined

Fifty one years ago, at the height of the Skinhead era, Tony Othen, a young photographer threw himself into the lion’s cage of Lady Gomm Club, the go-to place for all the teenagers off Bermondsey’s Silwood Estate. Like an anthropologist he immersed himself with the natives until he felt it was safe enough to take a few pictures, writes Michael Holland...

Those photos he took were soon forgotten. For the young people it was just another night in their club. Many years later, to celebrate the charity’s 75th anniversary, Bede, who ran the club, had a photographic exhibition of the good work they had done in Bermondsey. In that event they exhibited Tony Othen’s photos that were found in a box in a corner of a spare room in Bede House and asked if anyone could put names to the faces. I could. And did, and some of those photos have now been included in one of the best books to define that special time.

All of us, of any generation, remember fondly the days of our youth when it was important to have the right clothes, the right hair and listen to the right music. Those times will forever be our ‘good old days’, so when a book comes out that encapsulates that defining era and everything we craved and enjoyed when we were having the time of our lives, you know you have to get a copy. That book is Scorcha! Skins, Suedes and Style from the Streets 1967-1973, and it’s coming out soon.

The book is co-written by DJ and promoter Paul ‘Smiler’ Anderson, who has written several books on Mods, and Camberwell author and film-maker, Mark Baxter. The Scorcha in the title comes from an Errol Dunkley tune from 1968, and the idea for the book came from Paul Weller who, explains Smiler, ‘loved my book on Mods’.

Paul, a West Ham fan, set out alone to research the music and fashions from 1967-1973 but, he explains, ‘having a full

time job, a family, DJing and producing my radio show (on Totally Wired Radio) I asked Mark to get involved with some research, some of the interviews and getting more pictures.’

Mark, a Millwall supporter, says he was ‘delighted’ to help out: ‘I conducted extra interviews, sourced photos, cuttings and clippings and undertook research on the subject of skinheads and suedeheads, which all supplemented the work that Smiler had done… I filled in any gaps as and when needed, so I’d say it is 70% Smiler and 30% me.’

I wondered if any football rivalry crept in: ‘We decided to reach out across

the Thames and shake hands for the betterment of the book!’ jokes Mr Baxter before praising his co-author: ‘If you want an authority on the Mod culture, Smiler is your man. He has been on the Mod scene since the early 80s and knows the history of the whole movement, and those who were there at the beginning are personal friends.’ He stopped to wipe away a smear that was spoiling the shine on his loafers before continuing. ‘He also has a wonderful record and clothes collection.’

I asked Mark how and where the research was carried out: ‘Looking through old newspapers in the British Library, delving into photo libraries, trawling through the

internet, and finding people who were ‘there’ in the late 1960s and talking to them, plus, asking if they had any photos of those times… We were trying to find those “unseen” or at least “rarely seen” images that give any photo book that added value.’

But was it easy to get those special images? ‘The images we eventually found were key to the book getting a deal,’ begins the writer. ‘Through our research we found some marvellous photos and they tipped the balance in us getting the green light to write the book.’

The authors believe that their book may confuse some people. For those that wasn’t there, or not a part of the movement,

the word Skinhead has connotations far removed from the early days when it was a simple, affordable, working-class fashion connected to West Indian music and the Rude Boy style. Skinheads became synonymous with racist violence, and the ‘look’ was commandeered by Far-Right groups. Mark Baxter emphasises that the book ‘presents the original skinheads of 1968/69 in a fairer, possibly new way.’ The focus will be on, he says, the ‘black and white crossover going on in the clubs, with your white working-class youth, wanting to look black.’

There was an important point being made here and I could sense there was more. ‘The next generation of skinheads from the late 70s, early 80s were more ‘bonehead’ in nature and more racist, and they give the whole look/genre a bad name. ..We hope to redress the balance somewhat for the original ones, and I think our book might surprise one or two people, who, shall we say, have a perceived idea of those times.’

Was you surprised? ‘I lived on an estate in Peckham during the years we were writing about in the book, and on there you had all nationalities and colours, rubbing along okay.’

Along with the book there is an accompanying vinyl album of which they shared the selection. Says Mark, ‘I picked mine from speaking to some of the guys and girls in the book and getting a tune off of them. Plus, I also put one or two of my own faves in there.’

Skins, Suedes and Style from the Streets 1967-1973 is out on September 9th with a foreword by Suggs in all good bookshops and online, and covers topics from fashion and football, music and culture, drawing on first hand accounts from the original skin-suede generation and later adopters, including Paul Weller and Norman Jay MBE. Packed with iconic images this is the definitive visual history of a special era.

Salomé the most precious gem in Southwark Playhouse

Achieving a minimalistic vibe through a gold-laden banqueting scene impressively conveys the wealth empowering King Herod, played magnificently by Jamie O’Neill, whilst alerting audiences to the sinister undercurrent bubbling away in the shadows - Salomé calling for the head of John the Baptist.

Director Ricky Dukes’ reworking has shifted things along, introducing a homosexual Salomé (Fred Thomas), that usurps the notion of the traditionally female veiled dancer, and lending the play a male-gaze theme throughout.

So strong is this gaze that despite golden candelabras, balloons and numerous poetic references to amethysts, rubies

and diamonds, Salomé is clearly the most precious gem. Ridiculously alluring he has the security guard transfixed by his beauty, King Herod so blinkered he’s willing to sacrifice riches in return for Salomé performing ‘The Dance of the Seven Veils’, unlike Jokanaan (Prince Plockey) who steadfastly refuses to look, metaphorically warning of the danger facing those who do.

Such beguiling beauty benefits from the banqueting table that doubles as a cat-walk for Salomé to strut upon. King Herod and Salomé’s well-cut clothing, sophisticated watches, and good looks beguile us, epitomising the mystery that lies behind the seven veils. But with or without costume Salomé reminds us that pretty on the outside isn’t necessarily pretty on the inside, and the play startles audiences with his gruesome deeds.

King Herod’s lust for Salomé leaves him exposed, perhaps alluding to this modernday phenomenon of powerful figures

being brought down.

Herod captivates the audience as he desperately pursues, flatters, persuades, pleads, and finally begs Salomé to dance for him...Not exactly the actions of a King! Clad in ball-gown and long gloves, Salomé’s dance scene references and undermines the familiar striptease leaving viewers to question the whole enactment.

Pantomime twists are introduced through cat and mouse movement as the King slinks after his prey, freezes, then resumes the chase. Combined with the incredible and accurate sound-effects this humorous interjection allows a moment of necessary lightness.

Hypnotically enthralling production...a definitely must see.

Hamlet go goal crazy

There was little indication of the avalanche of goals to come when the sides went in at the break goalless, not least because the Hamlet had only scored once in their opening two National League South games of the season.

The hosts actually had the better of the first quarter of an hour as Nathan Cooper and Alfie Cerulli just failed to test Charlie Grainger in the Dulwich goal.

The Hamlet were barely a threat in attack in the opening half an hour as they struggled to bounce back from their 2-0 defeat to Dartford at Champion Hill two days earlier.

In fact, The Tudors were left wondering how they had not taken the lead in the 25th minute when Cerulli headed wide from inside the six-yard box.

The Hamlet’s first proper attempt arrived in the 32nd minute but Danny Mills headed off-target at the back post.

But that chance seemed to spark the visitors and they went close again three minutes before the break when only a last-ditch intervention by defender Gus Scott-Morriss prevented the ball ending up in the back of the net.

Hemel Hempstead responded a minute later with their first shot on target, but Grainger comfortably held on to Kyjoun Marsh-Brown’s shot after the midfielder had been found by the busy Cerulli.

The home side then lost Kyle Ajayi to an injury a minute before half-time, but were able to replace him with the calibre of former MK Dons and Birmingham midfielder and ex-Republic of Ireland international Stephen Gleeson.

It was 2-0 three minutes later and this

time McGregor added a goal to his assist as he fired a free-kick beyond the reach of Patching.

The home side were spinning and Patching was scooping the ball out of the net for the third time in less than eight minutes after the pick of the game’s goals.

Andrew Harris-Sealy played a one-two with Kandi on halfway before racing towards goal and driving a shot past the dazed home goalkeeper.

After a goalless first half, Ajay Ashanike’s side stepped it up against the team he left for the Fish in the summer of 2019.

It was a well-worked goal as Temi Oladejo’s cross was flicked on by Lee

Weemes and Christian Udo applied the finish.

There was a healthy crowd of 195 in attendance, the majority hoping to see a second SCEFL win of the season, and their side soon made sure they would.

And it was Udo again on target after Malakai Coker found Courtney Swaby who crossed.

The result put Fisher ninth in the Premier League table with eight points from six games after two wins, two draws and two defeats.

Fisher start their September schedule this Saturday when they host Tunbridge Wells. Kick-off is 3pm.

That emphatic result moved Dulwich up to twelfth with four points from their opening three games.

They travel to Eastbourne Borough, who are fifteenth, on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.

Dulwich Hamlet produced an astonishing second-half performance with a six-goal blitz to stun Hemel Hempstead at the Vauxhall Ground on Bank Holiday Monday.

In-form Stans went into the fixture on a five-match unbeaten run at the start of the season.

But that looked under threat when Rodney Eruotor opened the scoring for the hosts in the tenth minute.

Stans, who have had a prolific start to the campaign with fourteen goals in their previous five games, threatened on a number of occasions but failed to get through a stubborn home defence in the first half.

And that pattern continued into the second as the home side preserved their lead for an hour.

But then Stans struck decisively – and quickly.

Ollie Milton made the breakthrough for them in the 60th minute before

Macey Malyon added a second eight minutes later.

Malyon then made sure of the points with his second and Stans’ third seventeen minutes from time.

Stansfeld are second in the table, two points off top-place Croydon but with a game in hand.

They are on the road again this Saturday as they face Meridian VP. Kick-off is 3pm.

The win means Stars have qualified directly for the final on 5 September, while Sparks are out of contention.

Stars were missing prodigy Alice Capsey through injury, but her replacement 19-year-old Chloe Brewer - playing her first regional match of the season - pummelled 41 from 33 balls. Emma Jones - bumped up the order to 6 - then top-scored with an unbeaten 46 (27 balls), as Clare Boycott’s 3 for 22 proved in vain.

Eve Jones led from the front in Spark’s run-chase with 76 from 68 balls, but by the time she was stumped in the 19th over the result was a formality.

Stars had been 26 for 2 after 4 overs, following a dream debut from rightarm seamer Grace Potts (2 for 23) which saw her remove both openers - Aylish Cranstone was trapped LBW, then five balls later in-form Bryony Smith pulled straight to midwicket.

Leg-spinner Anisha Patel conceded just 25 runs from her 4 consecutive overs, but Brewer picked off runs from the other end, driving beautifully down the ground as she shared a 64run partnership with veteran Kirstie White (29 from 30).

Boycott’s first over, the 12th, reduced Stars from 90 for 2 to 90 for 4 - White LBW trying the ramp, while Alice Davidson-Richards fell for a golden duck, caught at short third.

Brewer eventually became Boycott’s third victim, edging an attempted ramp behind the stumps in the 16th when she looked on course for a halfcentury.

But five balls later Emma Jones showed her intent, sending the ball flying over Boycott’s head for the first six of the day. A cameo from Kira Chathli (18 from 10), which included a maximum pulled over square leg, helped Stars finish strongly.

In reply, Sparks reached 69 without loss before Danielle Gregory (3 for 16) made the key breakthrough in the 10th over - Marie Kelly (25 from 21) pulling a full toss to deep square leg.

Izzy Wong was sent out in the pinchhitting role as Sparks attempted to secure a bonus-point win to keep their Finals Day hopes alive, but she miscued Gregory to long-on in the leg-spinner’s next over.

Emma Jones had been removed from the attack after sending down two head-high no-balls, but Stars’ other

young bowlers - including debutant Ryana Macdonald-Gay - kept it tight, and Sparks fell well short.

“Losing Capsey and Phoebe [Franklin] was a big blow for us this morning, but Chloe and Ryana were really good for us,” Smith said.

“They’ve both come through our academy system. I’ve coached both of

them a lot so that was handy. We’ve got a few selection headaches for the final, which is good.

“We want to play a really positive brand of cricket. We wanted to bowl first in all of our last three games but it just shows we’ve got the bowling to defend any score. We want to go out, go from ball one. I’m trying to lead

Bryony Smith that myself and to see the young ones come in and bat like that - I’m really proud of them.

“When you’ve got that score on the board, you know they’re going to come hard. But we knew we had the attack to defend it. There were a few little blips in there, but everyone kept calm.”

Dulwich win promotion with game to spare Walton on Thames 108 (38.2) lost to Dulwich 177 (49.3) by 69 runs

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH WON a convincing victory by 69 runs at Walton on Thames last weekend to secure promotion from Division 2 of the AJ Fordham Surrey Championship.

The Dulwich innings revolved around a patient 62 off 136 balls by James Schofield, his second half century in three matches which equaled his score in the first. He came in with the total on 9 after the early dismissal of

Ollie Steele, and took part in stands of 30 for the second wicket with Chris Purshouse, who made 15, 13 for the third with Frankie Brown, who scored 6, and 57 for the fourth with Veer Patel, who made 16.

At 109-4 after 35.4 overs some acceleration was needed, and it was provided by Sam Ellison, who contributed 28 off 23 balls in a stand of 40 for the fifth wicket with Schofield in just seven overs.

Former Surrey slow left armer Mark Bainbridge had completed his ten overs with the miserly figures of 2-11, but the other spinners had proved expensive and it took the return of opening bowler Matthew Nichols to remove Ellison, Schofield, and keeper

Robbie Keaton to make it 158-7 after 44.2 overs.

Skipper Jon Lodwick and Ahmed Khan lifted the score to 174 before the other opener Nicky Wilson took the last three wickets in four balls to finish with 4-29. Dulwich had lost their last six wickets for 28 runs to be all out for 177 with three balls of the innings to spare.

Eight of the Dulwich wickets had fallen to the seamers, but Lodwick and Assan Crawford-Khan could not emulate them as skipper Dan Roberts and Evan Beck posted 35 in the first ten overs. The picture changed when Brown joined the attack, as he dismissed Roberts with the last ball of his first over and Beck with the second

ball of his next.

Fellow left arm spinner Alex Gledhill then struck in his first over and followed up with another in his third.

Brown came off after taking 2-4 off five overs and gave way to leg spinner Ahmed Khan, who became the third spinner to strike in his first over.

Another wicket for Khan and two for Gledhill saw Walton reduced to 70-8 in the 28th over, with all eight having gone down in 16 overs for just 33 runs.

Some spirited batting by Wilson and Ben Monk added another 20 before Wilson became Gledhill’s fifth victim, and Monk contributed all 18 runs put on by the last pair before falling to Brown for 26, the highest score of the innings.

Walton were dismissed for 108, coincidentally the same score they had made in the first match between the sides. Gledhill bowled his ten overs straight through to finish with 5-21 and take his tally in the last two matches to 12 wickets for just 41 runs.

Brown had 3-18 off 7.2 overs, while Khan took 2-22 off seven.

This victory, coupled with defeat for Bank of England at Oxted, ensures promotion for Dulwich with a game to spare.

Their final game of the season is this weekend at home to Dorking, who defeated the other promotion contender Old Wimbledonians last Saturday, and are currently in fourth place.

Those types don’t usually arrive until April or May, but defeats to Fulham and Cardiff City had Gary Rowett’s side facing the prospect of heading into the international break without a league win.

However, when the chips were down once again, Jed Wallace’s right foot came to Millwall’s rescue.

His namesake Murray Wallace had stolen the show four days earlier in the win over Cambridge, but Jed wasn’t about to be upstaged.

Soon after Shayne Lavery’s messy opener for ten-man Blackpool broke the deadlock, Wallace restored parity with a brilliant 25-yard free-kick.

And while this one didn’t quite top his

Boxing Day effort against Cardiff back in 2019, it was every bit as important.

On that occasion in south Wales, Millwall couldn’t go on and find another.

But Wallace, clearly not content with just one major contribution, ensured that wasn’t the case here as he whipped over a teasing cross that was begging to be headed home. Thankfully for Millwall, as the clock struck 90 minutes, Jake Cooper arrived and thundered into the roof of the net despite Chris Maxwell’s best efforts.

Besides the small pocket of Blackpool fans that had travelled down from Lancashire, the majority of those inside The Den were sent into raptures.

The home crowd had probably finally felt their league luck had turned for the better after just fourteen minutes when the lively Benik Afobe got in between the two centre-backs and was pulled back by Callum Connolly, who could have had little complaint when Gavin Ward brandished the red card.

Often, playing against ten men can prove difficult, but given Millwall’s recent record with a man advantage, the hosts had reason to be optimistic.

Granted, Millwall had their victory at Ashton Gate sewn up by the time Famara Diedhiou saw red last December, but Rowett’s men were made to grind it out

against Rotherham on Good Friday after Richard Wood had been dismissed.

The difference here, though, was that Millwall fell behind on this occasion, and in ugly circumstances.

After a frustrating first half, Blackpool broke away from a Lions attack and Josh Bowler was allowed to run more than 50 yards before putting Lavery in the clear.

Murray Wallace appeared to have the situation under control, but Lavery nipped in and tried to poke his effort past Bartosz Bialkowski, and although his initial effort was saved, the Seasiders striker reacted quickest to beat both Wallace and Bialkowski to the ball before finishing into an empty net second time around.

With Millwall staring down the barrel at a fifth league game without victory, those inside The Den were becoming increasingly frustrated.

It was one of those typical atmospheres where the Lions needed to respond rapidly – and they did.

Just seven minutes later, Daniel Ballard was bundled over in Wallace territory, and Millwall’s number seven stepped up to curl home the resulting free-kick into the top left-hand corner with a truly spectacular effort, before racing towards The Dockers Stand to celebrate.

It was a rare moment of quality by a

Lions player, but the type that we’ve become accustomed to from Wallace.

That’s already three goals and one assist in five Championship outings this season.

With Millwall now in the ascendancy and The Den crowd doing what they do best, you’d have been forgiven for expecting Rowett’s men to complete the turnaround quickly against their disadvantaged visitors.

But it didn’t happen and didn’t look like it was going to as the clock ticked towards 90.

Afobe should have hit the target with ten minutes remaining from another Wallace delivery and substitute George Evans’ late chance came from yet more productive work from Millwall’s talisman.

Millwall threw everything forward and finally get their reward close to stoppage-time. Blackpool couldn’t properly clear Connor Mahoney’s corner and when the ball bounced out to the right Wallace curled a delicious cross back in first time and Cooper rose highest to power in and end his 43-game wait for a goal since netting against Barnsley last October.

You could feel the relief inside The Den. Rowett summed it up perfectly.

“I did say to the players after can I

please not have any more games like that because I was going to have a heart attack at one point. We don’t make it easy, do we?” joked the Lions boss.

Easy just isn’t in Millwall’s DNA. Luckily, a never-say-die attitude runs through the club and even when they’re not at their best, more times than not, those qualities see them over the line.

It’s been a gruelling start to the campaign, with seven matches in the space of just three weeks, so the international break will be music to the ears of Rowett.

When the Lions do return, it doesn’t get any easier, with trips to unbeaten West Brom and then Swansea.

But heading to The Hawthorns with five points on the board looks far healthier than with just three.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FROM AN A+ start to the transfer window you would perhaps have marked Millwall’s overall business a B by the end of it.

Millwall acted decisively early in the transfer window, after letting go Frank Fielding, Shaun Williams and Shane Ferguson.

The Lions upgraded in each of those positions, signing George Long, George Saville and Scott Malone, with the added benefit of also lowering the average age of the squad.

Benik Afobe arrived on loan from Stoke City after the failure of Kenneth Zohore’s temporary spell at The Den. After five games, Afobe has scored two goals – just one off Zohore’s total in nineteen games last season.

Millwall’s search for a defender landed on the promising 21-year-old Daniel Ballard from Arsenal. Some Gunners fans have even wondered if they should have kept the Northern Ireland international, after their disastrous, zero-point, zerogoal, minus-nine goal difference start to the season.

On Tuesday night, Sheyi Ojo became the sixth signing of the window after joining on loan from Liverpool. He has played under Jurgen Klopp and earned praise from former Lions boss Neil Harris and Rangers manager Steven Gerrard. He certainly has the talent to make a big impact for Millwall this season.

Jed Wallace has also stayed, though there was never a suggestion he wanted to leave in this window.

And yet...

In an ideal world Millwall would have got Jon Dadi Bodvarsson off their books and recruited another young striker. Unfortunately, there weren’t any takers for the 29-year-old international forward who has scored just seven goals in 76 games since his move from Reading two years ago.

Rowett admires eighteen-year-old Manchester City striker Liam Delap but needed Bodvarsson off the wage bill first to have a chance of signing a player who was in demand in this window.

Fingers crossed until January

A largely positive transfer window – but still gaps in squad Looking around the squad, it’s easy to identify other areas where things could become stretched.

Some supporters may have been surprised that Mahlon Romeo was allowed to leave. With Danny McNamara out for another month or so Millwall don’t have a natural right wing-back.

But it had felt an uneasy alliance between Romeo and the club recently, not least as he had been left out of three match-day squads in the league. The Lions will have to make do with Billy Mitchell or Ryan Leonard in that position until McNamara returns.

Millwall don’t have a like-for-like

replacement if Scott Malone is absent for any reason. Murray Wallace did score twice against Cambridge United from left wing-back, but he naturally plays a deeper role.

Millwall wanted to add a central creative attacker, but again needed players out the door first, Ben Thompson or Tom Bradshaw the most likely candidates.

Millwall currently have 23 senior firstteam players, about the number they aimed for, but without that depth in some areas.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ALEX MITCHELL welcomed a “brilliant opportunity” to progress his career in the Football League after his season-long loan to Leyton Orient was confirmed on transfer deadline day.

Mitchell, 19, links up with former Millwall boss Kenny Jackett in League Two. The centre-back signed a new long-term deal with the Lions last week and the club have the option of recalling him in January.

Centre-back Mitchell played ten games on loan at Bromley last season, helping them into the play-offs.

“It’s a brilliant opportunity for me to play in the Football League, and to join Orient who are a massive club,” Mitchell said.

“It’s also a big manager who I’ll be working under, so I’m absolutely buzzing for this opportunity.”

Mitchell, who is 6ft3ins and powerfully built, also revealed some of his nicknames.

He said: “I got called a robot the other week, I also get meathead… it’s funny, but, look, I like to defend. I might be old fashioned in that way, but defending is my primary goal.”

Jackett added: “We did enquire earlier in the window for him. He was held back, covering and playing in a very strong Millwall side.

“Now they have players available and can release him, and we’re delighted he has chosen us.”

been more clubs with more cash and so more opportunities for Millwall to offload some of those players mentioned.

There were relatively few transfers of players to Championship clubs involving fees. It was a frees and loans market and Millwall have done well in it and certainly improved their first team from last season.

They just can’t afford more injuries, and hope to have McNamara, Shaun Hutchinson and Mason Bennett available soon.

Rowett and head of recruitment Harvey Bussell have already started planning for January. The trickiest

bit will again arguably be moving on players, especially if they are not getting the match minutes that might alert other sides.

It remains to be seen but it is hoped that Ojo can have that impact in attack, with his pace and ability on the ball, that Millwall haven’t had enough of since Rowett took over in October 2019 as they have mostly relied on Jed Wallace.

Bennett has also showed those qualities but needs to stay fit.

The report card on their summer window is largely positive – it’s now just fingers crossed they won’t be exposed in key positions.

Isaac heads for third stint at Sutton

ISAAC OLAOFE has returned for a third loan spell at Sutton United as he is set to taste Football League action for the first time in his career.

Olaofe, 22, scored seventeen goals for Millwall’s south London neighbours over his previous two spells, including fourteen times in 37 National League games to help the side to promotion last season.

Olaofe picked up an injury in pre-season and didn’t feature in any of the Lions’ friendlies.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BENIK AFOBE feels he can be one of the best strikers in the Championship this season.

If that sounds like over-confidence, consider that the centre-forward has commanded fees of over £10million for his signature and contributed six goals to help underdogs Bournemouth stay in the Premier League in 2016-17.

Afobe has major pedigree, even if he hasn’t always shown it consistently. He scored nineteen goals for MK Dons in League One on loan from Arsenal in the first half of 2014-15 before transferring to Wolves – who were managed by Kenny Jackett – and scoring on his debut for them in the Championship.

Twelve more goals followed as Wolves finished seventh in the second tier.

Afobe had scored ten the next season before Bournemouth paid £10million to sign him in January. He scored on his second appearance for them in the Premier League, a 3-0 win over Norwich City.

It meant after that game Afobe had scored 33 league goals since the start of 2014-15, fewer only than Sergio Aguero and Daryl Murphy in the top four tiers in that time, and the same as Harry Kane, Odion Ighalo and Andre Gray.

‘Norwich were reportedly among the clubs interested in signing Afobe in this transfer window, and they saw firsthand at Dean Court that the 22-yearold has the strength, pace and finishing prowess to make an impact in the top flight.

‘The former Arsenal forward, who had scored nine Championship goals already this season, regularly held off Norwich’s centre-half pairing of Sebastien Bassong and Ryan Bennett, laying off the ball to bring team-mates into the game.

‘He outpaced the Canaries back four on his way to being clattered by [Declan] Rudd in the first half, before picking the perfect place in the six-yard box to collect his first Premier League goal in the second.’

Afobe then scored two goals in his next two games against Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

You get the picture. There are goals in Afobe, who despite making sixteen moves in his career – loan and permanent, including two of the former to the Lions – is still only 28.

Afobe scored six goals in 31 Premier League games in 2016-17 but his level dipped the campaign after that and he went back to Wolves on loan.

Still, he showed his goal-scoring ability in the Championship with six to help Wolves win the title under now Tottenham boss Nuno Espirito Santo.

Afobe was at his most lethal from January 2015 to May 2018 in that Wolves-Bournemouth-Wolves part of his career.

His current boss Gary Rowett then signed him for Stoke but he didn’t hit those heights, nor did he on loan at Bristol City in 2019-20.

Afobe spent last season on loan with Trabzonspor in Turkey, scoring five times in 28 games.

But he feels there should be context around those numbers.

“I was away in Turkey for a year. I scored three goals in the first five games but the manager got sacked. That was tough for me mentally,” Afobe said.

“When you look at the statistics, people don’t realise, it says I played 28 games and scored five goals. But if you add up the minutes from those 28 games it was equivalent to eleven full games.

“I know that I scored five goals in eleven 90 minutes which is not a bad return for a team that didn’t really score many goals and wasn’t a scoring team. It was 1-0 here and there.

“I was coming on in the 87th minute, 88th minute for a lot of the season. That means you’ve got no fluidity in your play.

You’ve got no run of games, no chance to build up your sharpness.”

Afobe returned to England in the summer before making a loan move to Millwall from Stoke.

pre-season friendly against Ipswich, and has two goals in five games this season.

Rowett has said the Lions need to provide the right conditions for Afobe to show his scoring prowess.

Afobe explained how one of Rowett’s staff members, technical coach Joe Carnall, works to get the best out of him.

“I work with Joe to get feedback. Joe has known me since I was at Stoke. He’s pulled me aside and said, ‘Benik, when you are reacting sharply and taking things quickly, moving quickly, you’re a threat and one of the best in the league’,” Afobe said.

“I’m not the finished article. I’m 28 and have played at the highest level but sometimes you just need to be reminded, when I’m dangerous and the good stuff that I do. It’s just about improving my game.

“But I’m enjoying my football, first and foremost, and winning games every week is the plan.”

Afobe knew Rowett and Carnall offered him the best chance of getting back to those career numbers he posted at Wolves and Bournemouth.

He said: “I was 100 per cent [convinced about joining Millwall]. I had other interest but, to be honest with you, when I spoke to the manager I said, ‘this is the club, I’m not going to take any other club’.

“I give credit to Stoke, sometimes deals don’t happen until the end of transfer windows but Stoke were fair to me.

“I spoke to Gary, I saw the way his team plays and I felt like it worked for both parties. I think I’m something they hadn’t got with the way I play. I also think that with the way I play and the players that we’ve got is good for me as well.

“So it’s a good fit and hopefully come May we’ll still be saying it’s a good fit after a really good season.”

Afobe believes the Lions are capable of mixing it up this season. “We’ve looked at different ways of playing and I would classify us as having a bit of everything.

We’re good on the ball but we can go direct.

“Sometimes we’re more dangerous when we haven’t got the ball. You see teams with less than 50 per cent possession but they’re 2-0 up. At the end of the day it’s about scoring goals and winning games.

“We’ll do our best with whatever tactics the manager gives us.”

Meanwhile, Afobe is clear in what he wants. “I only got five goals last year but I know if I get a run of games I can be the best striker in the league.

“But, for me, it’s not about just being the best striker in the league, it’s about getting back to the best me. Whether that is being in the gym, supporting my team-mates from the bench, whether it’s me scoring a hat-trick, or encouraging someone because we’ve lost or we’ve had a poor game – I’m aiming for the best version of me.”

Lions complete deadline swoop New signing praised for ‘first-class attitude’ at Liverpool Sheyi Ojo in action on loan at Cardiff last season

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL COMPLETED a late loan swoop on Tuesday night – for a player who has been described as having a “first-class attitude”.

Sheyi Ojo was the attacking player Gary Rowett wanted and the Lions boss used his good connections with Liverpool to fend off interest from two other Championship clubs for the former England underage international.

Ojo, who can play on the wing or as a number ten, spent last season on loan at Cardiff – after being signed by former Millwall boss Neil Harris – following

a successful spell at Rangers under Steven Gerrard the previous campaign.

The 24-year-old has made 162 senior appearances and scored nineteen goals. Ojo played eleven times in Jurgen Klopp’s first season as Reds boss and scored in a 3-0 win against Exeter in the third round of the FA Cup in January 2016.

Ojo – who has also been on loan at Wigan, Wolves, Fulham and French side Reims – started this season with Liverpool’s under-23s.

Ojo played and scored in a recent 3-1 Premier League 2 win over Everton, and was praised afterwards by Reds boss Barry Lewtas.

“Sheyi has been great,” Lewtas told the Liverpool Echo. “He’s been with us all pre-season. He’s a little bit older, but his attitude has been first-class.

“He came to me and said he was keen to play, which is great. That shows where his mindset is, and the motivation he has. He’s not had 90 [minutes] for a long time, so it was important for him.

“And he didn’t want to come and just stroll around, he wanted to come and give it a go, and he really did. I was really pleased with Sheyi.”

Ojo’s team-mate Max Woltman added: “He’s a brilliant player with bags of confidence and experience.

“It’s been nice to have him alongside.

He likes everyone to go out and enjoy it.

He does give the younger lads pointers and he has been a big help in preseason.

“He’s not a loud person, he’s quite chilled and good to have in the changing rooms.”

Another team-mate, Tom Clayton, said: “Sheyi has been a good role model for us all in pre-season.

“The way he applies himself, in what is probably not ideal circumstances for him personally, he’s handled himself and conducted himself well in training, and I think that’s been an example to all of us.”

Romeo seals last-gasp exit

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MAHLON ROMEO’S Millwall career could be over after he left the Lions for a season-long loan at Portsmouth just before Tuesday night’s deadline.

Millwall allowed Romeo, 25, to depart despite currently having no natural right wing-back with Danny McNamara out injured.

Pompey boss Danny Cowley also admitted his surprise that the transfer went ahead, saying he thought a deal was “impossible” last weekend.

Romeo links up with ex-Lions Shaun Williams, Ryan Tunnicliffe and John Marquis at Fratton Park.

Cowley had hinted last Saturday that Pompey didn’t have the finances to recruit such an experienced Championship player.

Romeo has made 221 appearances for Millwall, but only played 135 minutes of league football this season.

“It’s a deal that we thought was impossible at the weekend and we have to thank Millwall and Mahlon for making it happen,” Cowley told Portsmouth’s website.

“He’s a boy who will bring us a great deal of athleticism and he’s versatile, with the ability to play on either side of the pitch.

“Mahlon is also incredibly dynamic and I think our supporters will love his all-action displays. It’s a brilliant signing for us.

“He’s another player who has not just played in the Championship, but also thrived at that level for a sustained period.”

Romeo said: “I’m delighted to be here and looking forward to playing football in front of such brilliant support. I can’t put into words how excited how I am.”
