Camberwell & Peckham MP Harriet Harman spoke last Wednesday week’s parliamentary debate on Afghanistan, where both Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab were roundly criticised, including by their own MPs, for the government’s handling of the crisis.

“We have all looked on in horror as the events in Afghanistan have unfolded,” she told the chamber. I join everyone who is urging the prime minister and foreign secretary to do everything they can to help UK nationals, including my constituents, who are stranded and in hiding in Kabul and desperately needing to get back home to the UK.” She added: “The government is setting up a refugee resettlement programme, and I would urge the government to make a realistic and generous assessment of the scale of the need.”

Helen Hayes has also said her ‘urgent priority’ is helping affected constituents.

Though not called to speak during the debate, in a statement published this week the Dulwich and West Norwood MP said she supported a judge-led inquiry into the multiple failures of judgement’ that led to the crisis.

“The thin and inadequate offer of 20,000 refugee places in the UK, only 5,000 to be provided this year, is completely unacceptable,” she said.

“Afghans – many of whom worked to support UK armed forces or worked in fields such as women’s education – are fleeing for their lives, and in withdrawing the support on the ground in Afghanistan which helped to keep them safe, the UK government now has a responsibility to provide a safe haven.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle says he is now trying to help 50 families, having so far only seen two successfully brought to safety.

Those in need of help are a mix of British workers, people who have previously been offered refuge in the UK and are desperate for their families to join them, aid workers and Afghans who worked with our allied forces.

been detained and questioned by the Taliban even though their application was meant to be fast tracked.

“Sadly we are not getting results quick enough,” he said, hitting out at the muchcriticised foreign secretary for being on holiday as the crisis unfolded.

“A lot of the people we are trying to help are in Kabul but the Taliban have a perimeter around the airport now, and we are also worried about ISIS attacks.

“We have both the Americans and the British defence secretary saying we have just hours now - not days. The government has been on their sun loungers.”

A government webpage with guidance on the resettlement scheme as yet has no information, with details to be announced in ‘due course’.

Meanwhile Southwark Council says it is ‘seeking further dialogue’ with Afghan community leaders in the borough to help direct support to refugees.

It is backing the national Labour Party’s call for an Afghan refugee resettlement programme to be put in place with target numbers from Afghanistan.

Harman has also called on the government to create a new ministerial position

responsible for liaising with women in Afghanistan, rather than the PM and foreign secretary ‘simply talking to other male leaders’.

A joint statement signed by council leader Kieron Williams, deputy Jasmine Ali, equalities cabinet member Alice Mcdonald and MPs Harriet Harman, Neil Coyle and Helen Hayes said: “We have particular concern for women and girls facing cruel repression and discrimination, and for all those Afghans who have supported the British civil and military authorities in their country in various ways.

“With more than three million people in Afghanistan displaced, we must all do our share to minimise the scale of the unfolding catastrophe.”

And, this week, Harman and 173 women MPs now signed a letter showing support for all 69 Afghan women MPs, saying they are ‘dismayed at the situation’ in the country, and ‘stand in solidarity’ with women politicians who have dedicated their lives to building a democracy and are now in danger of reprisals from the Taliban.

It is the first time in history that all women MPs in parliament, across party lines, have united with one voice.

Bermondsey war memorial ‘set alight’

By Kit Heren The memorial to the war dead of Bermondsey and Rotherhithe has been vandalised - with someone appearing to have set fire to it in the early hours of Tuesday morning (August 24).

The West Lane monument, which commemorates the sacrifice of local people in both world wars, was unveiled in 1921 and is Grade II-listed.

The shocking act of vandalism has been reported to Southwark Council by local residents and was cleaned the same day by council workers.

Local MP Neil Coyle said he had seen CCTV footage of the incident. The footage appears to show a lone, slim male, in a high vis jacket, he said. Coyle is in no doubt that it was a premeditated attack. The images, however, do not capture the suspect's face.

The Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP appealed for any residents in

the area to check their own doorbell cameras and any drivers in the area at the time the memorial was targeted to look at their dashcam footage.

Coyle said the council had already done a good job of cleaning up the damaged monument. "The vast and overwhelming majority of local people living here condemn this attacker and recognise the heroism and commitment that the monument marks," he said. "We are proud of our armed forces' contribution in every conflict."

The vandalism has caused widespread outrage, but local historian Gary Magold, who organises memorial services at the monument every year, called for calm.

"It gets cleaned up and we carry on as normal," he said. "Whoever's vandalised it has done what they've done - but they haven’t won. The irony is that the people that the memorial represents gave them the liberty to do that, they gave this particular individual the freedom to go about the country defacing things.

"It annoys people, but at the end of the day we’ll carry on. We’ll have our service on Remembrance Sunday.

That’s something they can't take away from us.

"The people of Bermondsey are very

good. They’ll come along and lay their tributes and take part like they’ve done since 1921. I'm really just very sorry for whoever’s done this. I'm not sure what peace and comfort it will bring them."

Gary said he believed it was the first time the war memorial had been vandalised in its 100-year history.

"Back in 1921, [Peek Freans owner] Arthur Carr, one of the big movers and shakers in getting the monument put up, said to all the assembled people that it’s down to you and protect it and make sure that it's not desecrated.

"It's interesting because even then there was the worry about vandalism.

But you had people who were angry and upset that they’d lost their uncles, cousins, brothers, sons."

"It’s such a shame that somebody has decided to do that. If it’s done for a specific reason, you aren’t going to get your cause furthered by doing that, you're only going to anger people."

Local people were defiant in the face of the vandalism, with members of the Bermondsey and Rotherhithe Poppy Appeal laying poppies at the memorial on Tuesday evening, and others also laying flowers.

Police said they had no knowledge of the incident. Southwark Council have been contacted for more information.

Family fundraiser after flat burns down, killing two pets

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Deptford family is appealing for help after their flat burned down, killing their two pets and destroying many of their belongings.

Jennifer Paredes launched a fundraiser for her sister Gabriela and her two young children, who lost everything in the blaze - including their dog Princess and kitten Pepita. The fire appears to have been caused by a faulty plug in an oil diffuser belonging to Gabriela.

Luckily the family themselves were out of the flat at the time of the fire, but Gabriela said she was “still in shock”, adding that “everything has been so traumatic for me and my kids”, who

are aged five and seven. The family’s belongings were not insured, Gabriela said.

She added in a Facebook post: “We are utterly devastated and heart broken having lost everything!

“I would please beg your help, nothing is too small right now. We had no sort of insurance for anything. I’ve kindly been donated some clothes and toys for the kids to survive on, I’ve got a few for me but most important are my children.

“Although they’ve been given toys, they are missing their meaningful toys and everything at home. If anyone has a chest of drawers laying around I would really appreciate it.”

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The “best mate” of the Rotherhithe man who died in an e-scooter accident in Bermondsey earlier this summer has called for a stricter ban on using the vehicles on roads.

E-scooter rider died about three weeks after being ‘hit’ by car

Michael Harris, 44, died about three weeks after he was allegedly hit by a car on Long Lane on June 19. His leg and ankle were broken in the accident and he was taken to hospital before being discharged. Police say they are still unsure if Michael was hit by a car.

In mid-July Michael collapsed at the house he lived in with his best friend and his friend’s mother. He was taken back to hospital, where he sadly died.

The friend, who asked not to be named, said the ambulance crew told him they suspected a blood clot from Michael’s leg injuries could be the reason for his collapse. The cause of Michael’s death is still unconfirmed and a Met Police investigation is ongoing.

Rotherhithe woman told to take down ‘community paddling pool’

You are not allowed to ride e-scooters on roads, unless they are part of the TfL hire trial, in which case they can be ridden through certain boroughs, including Southwark. This does not appear to stop many people from riding their own bikes on roads and on pavements, which has had serious consequences on several recent occasions in south London.

Last month, a three-year-old child suffered life-changing injuries in Myatt’s Fields Park after being ‘hit by an unidentified e-scooter rider.

Previously a man was left unconscious in the road in Rotherhithe after being allegedly knocked out by an e-scooter illegally riding on the pavement. Elsewhere a teenager was killed in Bromley after he was ‘hit by a car’ while riding an e-scooter on July 18.

Michael’s friend said he wanted to raise awareness of the dangers of riding e-scooters on roads to avoid more tragic deaths. He paid tribute to his “fantastic” friend, who he said worked as a porter at King’s College Hospital.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Rotherhithe woman has complained after being told to take down a paddling pool she put up for the local community in lockdown.

Chrissie Boswell, who lives in Ann Moss Way, put up the paddling pool in an unused parking space for people on her street to enjoy, once restrictions allowed. Children have played with adult supervision - which Chrissie said has been vital in a time when more people have been feeling more than usually socially isolated.

Chrissie and her neighbour fill, clean and filter the pool themselves and said they make sure everyone is out by 7.30pm. The neighbour's son, who is autistic, has benefited from being able to socialise in a controlled environment, she said.

Chrissie added that the parking space she put the pool in has not been used regularly for years, and there are other unused spaces nearby. She said she has not received any complaints from neighbours about the pool.

Housing association Optivo sent Chrissie a letter earlier this week ordering her to take down the pool "immediately".

The letter said that "parking areas are considered a communal area and should only be used to park vehicles." When contacted by the News, the housing association said having the pool in an area designed for use by cars was a health

law. He was a really private person.

“He was going to Guy’s Hospital to get his hearing aid changed [when the accident took place]. We were going to go to the pub afterwards. It was such a shock to hear about what happened.”

A spokesperson for the Met Police said earlier this month: “Police were called on Saturday, 19 June to a report of an e-scooter rider injured while on Long Lane, Southwark. Officers spoke to the victim who reported his rear wheel had been hit which caused him to fall off the e-scooter. The man suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital and later discharged.

“On Monday, 12 July officers were informed the man had died. The Met’s Serious Collision’s Investigation Unit are investigating. No arrests have been made.A file is now being prepared for the coroner.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We were called at 12.53pm on 19 June to reports of a collision involving an electric scooter and a car on Long Lane, SE1.

“We sent an ambulance crew, who treated a man at the scene and took him to a hospital.” and safety risk.

Chrissie told Optivo of the communal benefits of the pool and added that she plans to take it down at the end of the summer.

She said she has launched a petition to keep the pool and more than 100 people have signed.

"It's really not been bothering anybody - the car parking space has not been used for over twenty years," she said. "All the younger and older residents have enjoyed use of the pool as well. It's a real thing for the community and it would be such a shame to have to take it down."

A spokesperson for Optivo said: "We fully support our communities and enjoy seeing events that bring our residents together. It’s important to us that these are carried out in an environment that’s appropriate and safe for everyone.

"We were made aware of a home swimming pool erected in communal car parking spaces in Ann Moss Way, after members of the local community expressed concern.

"Due to health and safety reasons, it’s not appropriate to have children playing in an area designated for traffic use.

We’re not able to permit the use of the swimming pool and have therefore been in touch with the resident to ask for its removal.

"We appreciate some residents were using the pool to spend time and come together as a community. In the spirit of this, our Resident Involvement team will be in touch with those involved to discuss any help we can offer in organising events to be enjoyed in a safe and local venue."

The majority of these builds are solely homes for social rent and are designed with the council’s new ‘best in class’ design principles which aim to elevate social housing. Some developments, however, include private housing as well. Several have seen sustained opposition from residents who say ‘garage sites’ and ‘disused car parks’ slated for development also include green space and play areas, as covered by the News. Overleaf we examine some of the key issues facing these projects, look at why the council has taken this approach and what political support and opposition exists for this new chapter in the borough.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Since the council published its strategy for building 11,000 new homes and began consulting with residents on ‘infill’ developments, it has become one of the most controversial topics we cover.

Around 28 specific estates so far have ‘infill’ plans as defined by the council, but this map highlights 53 sites with infill, rooftop extensions, garage conversions slated for estates across Southwark, the vast majority of which are currently in consultation phases with residents.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A group of Southwark campaigners opposed to the council’s social housing programme have alleged that one of their members was arrested for political reasons.

Groups including Southwark Defend Council Housing, Up the Elephant and Yes 2 Fair Redevelopment are among the signatories to an open letter sent to Southwark Council leader Kieron Williams, which claimed that Robert Hutchinson (pictured), a campaigner against plans to build new council housing on the Elim Estate in Bermondsey, was arrested because of his activism.

The council denied this allegation, telling Mr Hutchinson that officers were not aware of his arrest before it took place.

Mr Hutchinson was arrested earlier this summer on suspicion of hacking into the website of Leathermarket Community Benefit Society, the housing provider that plans to build council homes on a play area in the estate. He said he accessed the documents via a simple Google search. Police later found he had no case to answer.

The letter told Cllr Williams: “We are appealing to you in light of the arrest of Robert Hutchinson of Save Elim Ballcourt campaign as a result of unsubstantiated allegations made by Leathermarket Community Benefit Society (CBS).

“We have concerns that Robert Hutchinson was unfairly targeted as a result of his vocal opposition to development plans for the Elim Estate.”

The letter went on to outline several allegations against Leathermarket and the council, drawing attention to the £985,000 given by the council for the planning application by February this year, according to the board minutes.

Leathermarket said this money is a “normal” amount for this kind of application and was used for feasibility

and design stages, including surveys and professional fees, for the three sites considered on the estate.

Other allegations include Elim estate residents being encouraged to speak out in favour of the application and Leathermarket board members submitting comments in favour.

The letter continued: “No Southwark resident campaigning to save a ball court for the greater good of the community should be singled out in this way.

“Something went terribly wrong and we want to know what Southwark Council knew about this occurrence.”

Campaigners pointed out several instances of Southwark estates included in the infill programme where some residents have alleged that the council has not carried out proper consultation.

The letter called for an overhaul of Southwark’s council house building programme to avoid green spaces and recreational areas, and an independent inquiry into Mr Hutchinson’s arrest - and the relationship between Leathermarket and the council.

Campaigners also told Cllr Williams that they wanted the Elim Estate application halted while these inquiries were ongoing.

Deputy leader Cllr Jasmine Ali, replying on behalf of Cllr Williams who was on leave, told campaigners that the council knew nothing of his arrest before it took place and advised them to contact the police for answers instead.

Cllr Ali added: “I am sure that you know, the Metropolitan Police are not accountable to Southwark Council, so all questions related to the circumstances around, and decisions that lay behind your arrest really must be directed to them....

“As far as I am aware, our officers were not aware of any allegations made against you before your arrest.

Any decision to refer this matter to the police was a matter for the CBS who, if they believed a criminal offence was

committed, would have a duty to inform the police.

“Therefore, we cannot answer any of your questions related to the decision or process through which the referral was made, because we were not involved.”

In response to campaigners’ calls for an inquiry into the relationship between the council and Leathermarket, Cllr Ali pointed to the two organisations’ publicly available management agreement.

Mr Hutchinson is one of many local residents who opposes plans to build 32 homes on a play area on the Elim Estate. Leathermarket has said that the new homes would mean they could rehouse families currently living in accommodation that is too small for them – a huge problem in Southwark, with thousands on waiting lists or in unsuitable housing.

Residents have since been offered the chance to vote for a new plan that would still see 32 new homes built, but that would also keep the outdoor play area.

The tenant management organisation’s plans were originally set to go in front of Southwark Council’s planning committee on June 15, but this has been pushed back.

A spokesperson for Leathermarket said this week: “We would like to re-iterate that Leathermarket CBS remains committed to working in partnership with Southwark Council to build new, genuinely affordable Council homes on infill sites across the JMB Estates, to help meet the high levels of housing need in an area of high property prices.”

The dispute is one of many across the borough over where to build many of the 11,000 new council homes promised by Southwark before 2043.

Residents on existing estates have frequently opposed infill plans to build on areas including car parks or green spaces near their homes, citing loss of light, mental health concerns and inconvenience.

• March 2014 - Southwark Labour launches its election manifesto pledging to build 11,000 new council homes by 2043.

• April 2019 - In an exclusive, the News reveals the location of 2,780 new council homes in the pipeline, by electoral ward. Many are ‘infill’ projects but have yet to be described as such.

• October 2019 - Southwark Council announces new strategy to build ‘rooftop extensions’ in a bid to tackle the housing crisis.

• March 2020 - The local authority publishes its draft ‘New Homes Delivery Plan’ outlining how it will build its new homes - including infilling and converting garages into housing.

• November 2020 - More than 100 sign petition against infill plans in Nunhead’s Priory Court in first campaign of its kind against the scheme.

• December 2020 - Then housing cabinet member Leo Pollak tells the News the council now ‘builds homes quicker than it loses through right to buy’ and is ‘half way there’ toward 2,500 ​​ new homes by 2022 target.

• February 2021 - Pollak resigns from his position after it emerges he has been running an anonymous twitter account criticising campaigners as ‘NIMBYs’, apologising for his ‘​​serious error of judgement’. Calls from campaigners for him to step down as a councillor were unheeded, as the Liberal Democrats attacked Labour for refusing to stop its ‘golden goodbye’ payments for ex-cabinet members.

• March 2021 - In a victory for campaigners, infill plans are scrapped for Priory Court as the new homes would not represent good value for money.

• April 2021 - The News first reports on residents’ concerns over plans to build on Elim Estate’s ball court. Groups from Bells Gardens and Brenchley Gardens also join the anti-infill movement as it spreads across the borough.

• June 2021 - A planning decision on Elim Estate’s new homes is delayed by three months and residents in Dodson and Amigo Estate vow to fight redevelopment plans.

• July 2021 - Labour votes against a Liberal Democrat motion to pause infill projects and protect green spaces on estates that are not officially designated as open land or public parks. Stephanie Cryan, who took over from Leo Pollak, refuses to stop projects in Bells Gardens and Dodson and Amigo but reiterates her desire to work with residents. Meanwhile, 300 sign a petition against a project in Elmington Estate and campaigners against development on ‘Peckham Green’ stage their first demonstration.

• August 2021: Protests continue in Peckham Green, with campaigners hitting out at the council’s claims the land ‘is not designated a park’ as contractors begin work. Robert Hutchinson, an Elim Estate anti-infill campaigner is arrested over unsubstantiated hacking claims and later released with ‘no case to answer’. He and other campaigners later claim the allegations were ‘politically motivated’. Vauban, Kingston and Slippers Place estates are the latest to launch petitions and stage protests against planned new homes.

Why IS the council having to do this?

Cost of land Building on existing estates is one of the ‘creative solutions’ the council has adopted after finding itself priced out of the market.

In March 2019, then-housing cabinet member Leo Pollak said: “The great south London land rush is eating away at the affordable housing and infrastructure contributions Southwark residents could otherwise be benefiting from.”

Sites he had in mind for new homes included a plot on Ilderton Road, given an existing use value of £1.8million and then put on the market for a staggering £15 million. Meanwhile, the same year he said it cost the council around £310,000 to build its average new home.

Massive rise in empty homes Anti-infill activists have routinely called on the council to focus on requisitioning empty homes to help meet its housing targets.

Although a growing problem in the borough, bringing every empty home back into use would only scratch the surface of the council housing shortage.

Last year the charity Action on Empty Homes compiled new statistics it described as ‘extremely worrying’ showing that the number of empty homes in Southwark had rocketed during lockdown, with one in 24 having ‘no one living there’.

More than 3,600 homes in Southwark in 2020 were no longer listed as primary residences, up by almost 600 per cent from 523 in 2019 - the highest recorded rise in any London borough.

There are also a further 2,358 homes listed as long-term

empty properties in Southwark, up from 1,469 this time last year. While properties can be listed as temporarily empty in snapshot data during renovations, house sales or in between lets, any rise in the number that are empty longterm is particularly concerning.

In April, Cllr Helen Dennis told us the council was working with landlords to bring homes back into the rental market and aimed to buy up empty properties where possible, but without more powers from central government its hands were tied.

In a letter to the government’s housing minister Robert Jenrick she urged him to change national planning policy to let the council do more about the “unacceptable” situation and “provide local authorities with the power within planning policy to insist on full occupancy as a condition of planning permission”, with any vacant properties to be let out at “affordable” rent.

Other demands included allowing councils to raise the tax on long-term empty homes, to make it easier for local authorities to use compulsory purchase orders to bring empty homes back into use, and to consider loans and grants to cut the number of empty homes.

Right to buy While activists blame empty homes, large scale estate demolitions and developers failing to keep to social housing commitments for the social housing crisis in Southwark, one of the council’s key issues is one it has no control over whatsoever - right to buy.

In nearly a decade the number of new council homes built in Southwark is only around half the total number lost through the policy.

From January 2012 to 2021, former tenants bought 1,583 properties in Southwark.

In the same period, just 785 replacements were either under construction or newly built Labour has lobbied for councils to receive 100 per cent of right to buy receipts, new legislation to prevent purchased homes from being rented out privately for at least five years, and called for buy discounts should be set by local authorities, all to help mitigate the impact the scheme makes on housing stock and availability.

Shockingly, in 2019 we reported how the council spends two million a year renting back former council homes sold under right to buy for people in desperate need of housing.

Are the rooftop extensions safe?

In August 2020 Arup conducted a survey on the possibility of building rooftop extensions in council blocks across the borough, looking in detail at nine estates.

The report highlighted safety concerns in blocks built before 1970, even with just one extra storey, the high cost of doing so, and significant disruption to residents if extensive strengthening work were required.

Blocks that are built over 18m may then have to be retrofitted with sprinklers over fire safety fears, casting their cost effectiveness into doubt. The council says only one project would go over this height threshold; at Chilton Grove. in Rotherhithe. We asked Cllr Cryan whether rooftop extensions were safe and a good use of funds.

Where do our politicians stand?

Neil Coyle MP ONLY ONE OF THREE MPs GIVES HIS OPINION ON INFILL DEBATE Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said it was “overly simplistic to treat infill as one policy - each building and site are different.”

Although he is unable to ‘call in’ planning decisions, unlike ward councillors, he says he has met with residents from estates to help provide advice and resources to those engaging with the planning process.

“I’ve had some campaigners tell me there is no support for infill homes - it is an interesting view that no one wants new housing, that’s not the reality in

my inbox or in my constituency,” he said, adding that “Southwark Labour is doing more than any council in the country for house building. In some cases it needs tweaking but overall I think the public do support it.” He described Southwark Lib Dems’ view as ‘party politicking’: “They criticised the council when it was being too slow to build and now they’ve worked out they can get a few votes by council house bashing.” *MPs Harriet Harman and Helen Hayes were contacted by the News but we did not receive a reply before going to press.

Where does the opposition stand?

In July, Southwark Lib Dems came out against infill homes on green spaces when their housing spokesperson Anood Al-Samerai tabled a motion - later defeated - at a council assembly meeting which called on the council to audit and protect all green spaces and urgently review the site-selection criteria for council-led developments.

During the debate she told councillors: “Estates are designed specifically with communal green spaces because people don’t have gardens. I can’t believe we can’t agree that there should be formal protections for green space and play spaces.”

The same week, a Southwark Green Party spokesperson said: “We recognise the need for more, good-quality council homes. Some sensitive infill on genuine brownfield sites may be acceptable, however building on inner city parks, gardens, ball courts and sports pitches is not.

“Parks, gardens and ball courts are not spare land. This space and facilities are built into the design of estates in lieu of private gardens and open spaces. These schemes effectively ask those with the least to give up the most.”

The party says it is concerned that residents are often only finding out about planning applications at a ‘very late stage’ and that consultations are often ‘top down’.

Instead, it has called for better enforcement of social housing in private developments and for the council to prioritise renovating empty properties that could be available in far shorter timeframes.

“We asked Arup to do a very general, desktop based, study into our council blocks and their potential for rooftop extensions,” she said.

“Their initial report does make some blanket comments about some of our older blocks currently being unsuitable for extensions – but the report also goes on to suggest it is possible with some additional works.

“Again, this report was done without any invasive work to any specific blocks and is incomplete. We would, of course, take every proposal for rooftop extensions and do complete, individual and in-depth assessments of the blocks in question to ensure their suitability, and no works would take place where there was any doubt to the safety of our residents.”

Should estates have a ballot on infill homes?

In August we asked Southwark Council’s new council housing boss Stephanie Cryan why estates were being given the right to a ballot on regeneration projects but not infill homes.

She told us: “I understand the concerns of the campaigners, but there is a difference between large-scale estate regeneration projects where existing social rented homes are demolished and replaced with large numbers of new homes, and our smaller new homes projects.

“The Greater London Authority’s (GLA) criteria for holding ballots on estate regeneration projects applies to any scheme seeking GLA funding that involves the demolition of social rented homes and the construction of 150 or more new homes.”

Council threatened with legal action over overcrowding

A family of four stuck in a severely overcrowded flat in Walworth are threatening Southwark Council with legal action - after they were told their housing crisis was a ‘deliberate act’.

Advocacy group Housing Action Southwark and Lambeth have taken on the case of Milton, his wife and two children aged eighteen and fourteen, with support from Southwark Law Centre.

Last December, another HASL family were successful at overturning Southwark council’s decision that their severe overcrowding was a ‘deliberate act’ in the Court of Appeal.

But, despite this precedent, they have so far have been unable to move Milton’s family further than band 3 in nearly four years of living in the cramped home.

Milton first moved to the UK in search of work in 2016, temporarily living in Lambeth, before his family joined him soon after. Since then they have lived in a studio flat in Southwark and have struggled to find suitable accommodation.

In July 2021, the local authority wrote to the family outlining its decision on their plea for priority housing. An official from the council’s Housing Solutions Department explained: “I consider it is expected and not unreasonable to suggest that before arranging for your family to join you in the UK and paying for their airfares you would have first made some enquiries into where you all may legitimately and safely live together.”

The letter goes on to say that “although your employment may be in Southwark and the children schools may even be in Southwark, there is no special requirement for you to reside in the borough”, describing his “resourcefulness” in having lived in both Spain and Ecuador previously in search of work opportunities and implying he could use these skills to find a home elsewhere.

The letter concludes “it is our position that it is the choices you made that led to you occupying accommodation that was statutory overcrowded at the outset”.

Milton, for whom English is a second language, said any offers of housing made were all far from their work and schools and too expensive, being in the private rented sector.

“It has been a very hard time, not only for me, but for my children since they were

the ones who will translate for me and help me with the documents to be able to present to the council,” he explained.

“My children have spent their free time after school to help us with the council procedures. This is unfair since they ask us the same information again and again.

“I had to move to this flat, for many reasons, for example the agencies asked us for many months rent in advance, I also couldn't rent a three-bedroom house because it was too expensive, and they also asked me to have a full-time job.

“We had no other option to rent the studio flat due to our financial situation.

Our situation living in the flat is not the best, this situation that I and my family are going through is very hard.

“For example, my children cannot study in this environment since the space is limited, our flat does not contain any

Rotherhithe museum shortlisted for award after escape room success

The Brunel Museum in Rotherhithe has been shortlisted for a Southwark business award after using its historic structure as the basis for a virtual escape room as visitors dried up in lockdown.

Tunnelling Through Time asks players to complete a number of logic-based tasks to complete the online game, which is set against the backdrop of the Rotherhithe tunnel.

Players encounter real-life stories from the history of the tunnel as they go through the game, which was designed by specialist Deadlocked Escape Rooms.

“Pivot to digital is an oft-quoted phrase from the pandemic, but Tunnelling through Time is an amazing example of what can happen when two businesses used to delivering face to face activity are suddenly forced to close,” the museum's director Katherine McAlpine said.

The Brunel Museum has been shortlisted in the Business Pivot category of the Southwark business awards, which celebrates some businesses' "remarkable efforts to diversify or adapt their products and services for the greater good" during the pandemic.

His daughter Rebecca added: “Sometimes it feels really embarrassing for us to apply for housing.

“We are immigrants so applying for housing makes us feel embarrassed, every time they say no to us, you cannot apply for housing.

“But we feel like Southwark is our home.

I have my friends here, my church, I go to the gym to relax and get away from the flat. I do volunteering which makes me feel good.

“It feels like we’re treated like we have done a crime because of the way they have treated our case.”

Elizabeth Wyatt, from HASL said: “Even after the Court of Appeal case and years of campaigning and engagement by families in overcrowded housing with the council,

it feels like nothing has changed.

“This decision is absolutely devastating for the family who have already suffered years in unimaginable housing conditions.

“As well as denying them the urgent move into the permanent, more spacious council housing they need, this decision is also cruel and offensive.

“We have repeatedly highlighted to Southwark council our concerns about the use of ‘deliberate act’ which is targeted at low-income families of colour and migrant families. And yet time and time again we have been ignored by the council and councillors.

“In Milton’s case, he has been asked by the council if there is a specific reason his family need to live in Southwark.

“Does Southwark council ask this question to all families, or just migrant families? We do not know how the council can justify such a cruel and hateful policy.”

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness told the News: “While this is still being dealt with as a legal issue we cannot go into too much detail about the family’s individual circumstances – we would prefer to communicate with them directly.

“However, I can confirm that we have offered lots of support to them, that we did not infer or say that they should have stayed in Ecuador – we assessed their housing situation in relation to their move from Ecuador, and also from Lambeth.

“We also offered them suitable housing in the private sector and asked if they wished to make a homeless application, which may include temporary accommodation.

“These offers were declined. We are still here to offer the family any support they require and I sincerely hope their housing situation is soon resolved.”

Appeal after ‘rape’ on Common

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are appealing for help after a man was raped on Clapham Common earlier this summer.

The man, who is in his early 30s, was raped at about midnight on Wednesday, June 30, in a wooded area at the western edge of the Common, opposite The Avenue (A205).

Police say they believed that two men were present at the time of the assault which was reported to them in the past week.

It was dark and no other information about the men is available.

Detective Sergeant Ross Burrell, who is investigating, said: “We are determined to identify the person or persons responsible for this horrific crime and seek justice for the victim.

“A significant period of time has passed since the attack occurred but we still think there will be people out there with information that could help.

“We want to hear from anyone

who was out on the Common that night and saw or heard anything suspicious. We want to hear from anyone who has seen two men in the area, either before or after this incident, acting suspiciously or doing anything which has raised concerns.

“It does not matter why you were in the area. You can be assured that officers will make no judgements and will treat any information you provide sensitively. Your information, no matter how small, could be vital.

Vulnerable teens to be jabbed by September

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The care watchdog has raised its rating for South London and Maudsley NHS Trust’s psychiatric intensive care unit to ‘good’ from ‘requires improvement’ after its most recent inspection.

On Friday (August 20) the Care Quality Commission (CQC) published its latest report into the trust’s working-age adult acute wards, psychiatric intensive care and adult community services, praising improvements made since a previous inspection in 2019.

Inspectors did, however, highlight improvements needed in the trust’s community services, which are struggling with high caseloads and long waiting lists no doubt worsened by the impact of the pandemic.

For these reasons, the community service remained rated ‘requires improvement’.

Overall, the three services inspected are currently rated as ‘good’ for being effective, caring, responsive, and well-led and ‘requires improvement’ for being safe while the trust as a whole continues to be rated as ‘good’.

CQC’s head of hospital inspection, London, Helen Rawlings, said: “When inspectors visited the three areas at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, they were pleased to see that the level of care had remained consistent despite the significant pressures caused by the pandemic, which is good news for people using these services.

“Since our last inspection in 2019 there has been significant changes to leadership, with a substantive team of executive directors now in position who have settled into their roles and are working together effectively.

“The trust had responded positively to the previous inspection and worked to make the necessary improvements.

“For example, we saw progress with physical health monitoring for patients in the community with staff supporting patients to live healthier lives by encouraging them to take part in programmes or giving advice.

“There was a continued focus on improving patient safety by reducing violence and aggression and the use of restrictive practices.

The UK’s medicine regulator announced in June that it was safe to provide this group with the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

• Children with severe neurodisability and/or neuromuscular conditions that impact respiratory function.

• Children with a learning disability, including anyone on the learning disability register, children with Down’s syndrome and those with profound and multiple learning disabilities.

• Children with a weakened immune system due to disease or treatment • Children who are contacts of

immunosuppressed people – e.g. share a household or are in contact most days Initially they will be contacted by their GP but longer term it is aimed that every oversixteen will be offered a walk in service.

It comes as sixteen and seventeen-yearolds will also be offered their first doses of the same vaccine by September after new advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation.

Join the interfaith walk next month Southwark Multi-Faith Forum is holding its annual interfaith walk next month, writes Katherine Johnston...

The annual event will start at Southwark Cathedral before stopping at three other religious venues from the Christian and Muslim traditions via London Bridge, Elephant and Castle and Walworth.

Along the way attendees will visit St Hugh's Church, Baitul Aziz Islamic Cultural Centre, and Church of Jesus Christ of the Latter-Day Saints at Manor Place.

There will also be a series of short talks at each venue, including speakers from the Jewish and Bahá'i faiths. The walk will then be followed by a vegetarian, vegan and halal BBQ. Maudsley’s acute adult wards and intensive care rated 'good' by CQC

“A redesign was ongoing to improve this area which focused on providing a safer, therapeutic service for patients.

“Staff were proud to work for the trust and felt supported, valued and respected by their managers. They spoke about improvements in culture and said leaders were much more visible.

“There are, however, areas where improvements must be made and maintained.

“For example, within community services, some teams reported high caseloads that exceeded safe levels and long waiting lists for psychological therapies and non-urgent referrals.

“These long waiting times can have a very negative impact on people’s wellbeing whilst they’re trying to access these services.

“The service was implementing a change programme to improve these

areas in order to speed up patient access and flow.

“Action was also being taken to address nursing staff vacancies and the low rates of staff training in some mandatory areas.

“We have reported our findings to the trust and are pleased that the strong commitment from all staff to deliver good services has resulted in higher standards of care for people. The provider must now ensure these positive changes are sustained and the necessary improvements are made.”

The CQC has also praised its ‘ability to adapt at a fast-changing pace during the COVID-19 pandemic’.

The community-based mental health team now needs to ensure that patients who require a Mental Health Act assessment must be assessed without delay to ensure their safety.

Other issues also identified include some gaps in mandatory staff training, and how emergency medicines and equipment were being managed in teams specific to Croydon.

At the acute wards for adults of working age and psychiatric intensive care units the CQC has told the hospital to ensure sufficient numbers of staff on each ward must receive training in the use of physical restraint and disengagement, immediate life support and basic life support.

Examples of ‘outstanding care’ highlighted by inspectors include how community based patients could now, as part of a new service, receive a oneto-one session with a specialist mental health pharmacist.

A clinical psychologist had also obtained funding for an innovative project to help patients work on their

known anxiety scenarios using virtual reality headsets, due to begin in June 2021.

And community-based mental health services also had access to testing facilities which meant patients could have physical health monitoring completed and medicines supplied within just a 20-minute appointment.

Responding to the findings, David Bradley, chief executive officer, at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, said: “We are committed to working together with the people who use our services, and their carers, who remain crucial in our ambition to improve the quality of our care and the design of our services. We recognise there is still much for us to do to improve services and we are publishing our new strategy in September that will set out our vision for the Trust.”

Midwife of the year Claire Kennard

Guy's and St Thomas' top nurses and midwives have been honoured by their colleagues at the hospitals' annual awards.

The NHS trust’s annual nursing and midwifery awards went to fifteen individuals and a team.

Among the winners were Fenella Jolly, from the health inclusion team, who was named community nurse of the year.

Fenella's team delivers services for homeless people, refugees, asylum seekers and people with addictions.

Fenella made sure that the people she cares for were offered a Covid-19 vaccination despite their often-difficult living circumstances.

Dan Wicks, who works in cardiovascular services, was named matron of the year.

Dan volunteered to be redeployed to critical care during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and organised wellbeing sessions for his team.

Claire Kennard, who leads the antenatal and newborn screening team, was named Midwife of the Year.

She was recognised for developing

the service and supporting staff as they adapted to new ways of working.

Team of the Year went to the Covid-19 vaccination team - who helped with the design and day-to-day running of the vaccination centres.

The team have acted as role models when training and managing new vaccinators, many who come from nonhealthcare related backgrounds.

Since the vaccination centres opened in December 2020, the team has helped to deliver more than 500,000 doses of the vaccine.

Avey Bhatia, chief nurse at Guy’s and St Thomas’, said: “I am extremely proud of our outstanding nurses and midwives who have risen to the challenges we have faced over the last eighteen months.

"They have delivered compassionate care to thousands of patients and their families so it’s really important to us that we recognise and celebrate their fantastic achievements.”

Daredevil physiotherapist to abseil down St Thomas’ hospital to celebrate retirement A physiotherapist, who has worked in the NHS for 40 years, is celebrating her retirement by abseiling down the side of St Thomas's hospital.

Suzanne Roberts is head of integrated rehabilitation services at Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust - which means she is in charge of looking after people at home in Southwark and Lambeth.

She will be taking on the 160-foot abseiling challenge in September to raise money for the trust.

Suzanne said: “I’m so happy to have worked in the NHS, especially during the pandemic – even though that sounds like a strange thing to say. The way our community services changed and responded during Covid-19 has been so impressive – the staff have worked their socks off. It has been an immensely stressful time but our community staff have continued to care for patients in their own homes in unbelievable numbers.

“One of my earliest memories from the pandemic was delivering personal

protective equipment (PPE) to our staff from the boot of my car when the guidance suddenly changed, it was my Del Boy moment.”

Her career in the NHS began in September 1981, when she trained to be a physiotherapist at St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington.

She said: “I originally applied to St Thomas’ School of Physiotherapy but they turned me down, so it’s funny that 40 years later I’m finishing my career here.”

Suzanne, 58, was a respiratory physiotherapist and has spent a lot of time caring for patients on intensive care wards.

She said: “There have been some big changes over the last 40 years but the thing that stands out most to me is that patients are now sicker and often more complex – both those in hospital and those we care for at home. Previously, a lot patients were essentially well but were on the wards for weeks at a time – young men with broken femurs and people having varicose vein surgery.

Now, with advancements in treatment

and technology, these patients are in and out.”

Suzanne added: “It will be a fitting final farewell and I’m really looking forward to it. Guy’s and St Thomas’ has been an amazing organisation and I’m going to miss it, but it’s time to hand over to the next generation – it’s good to leave somewhere feeling a little bit sad.

“I really hope allied health professionals going into the NHS will see working in the community as a real career choice – among others, we need physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists committed to delivering care to people at home.”

After retiring Suzanne hopes to spend six months on a canal boat with her husband, and to become a ‘community grandma’.

She said: “I want to help children with reading in school, join in with some community gardening, and try and get a bit fitter.”

One million pounds for youth groups Groups organising activities for young people in Southwark can get grants of up to £60,000 after the council launched a funding scheme worth £1m in total.

Pub Street party A Walworth pub is throwing a street party over the bank holiday weekend to celebrate finally reopening its doors after lockdown.

The Huntsman & Hounds on Elsted Street just east of the Old Kent Road is reopening for the first time since pubs were originally forced to close in March last year.

The pub, which was slated to be redeveloped in 2017 before locals stepped in, is throwing a party to thank

the community next Sunday (August 29).

Local beers and street food will be on offer, while a DJ will also be playing at the party. The Huntsman & Hounds says it only serves beers from its own brewery or beer brewed within the M25.

Manager Ashley Martin Front said: "The Huntsman & Hounds focuses on the unique beverage producers of the industry who rightfully deserve their share of limelight going against the grain of local expectations.”

£7k grant from the mayor's spaces at risk A Peckham-based charity that helps people of West African descent who are HIV positive has been given £7,000 by a fund set up by Sadiq Khan.

The Ernest Foundation, which aims to reduce the stigma often still attached to HIV and AIDS, was given a grant by the London mayor's community spaces at risk fund. The fund seeks to protect grassroots cultural centres, social clubs, youth, education and other spaces that have been supporting vulnerable groups in the pandemic.

The fund has given out nearly £600,000. Some £360,000 of this has gone to 30 community organisations across 18 boroughs in the last five months.

Activities might be sports and adventure play, arts and wellbeing workshops or anything that help young people develop and "lead positive lives".

Grants range from £20,000 at the lower end to £60,000, split evenly over two years. Funding comes from Southwark Council's Positive Futures Fund, which first started in 2019.

funding in this round are the Lewisham Irish Community Centre and the Oasis Play children's centre in Stockwell.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said: “Community spaces provide much-needed support and assistance to Londoners, and have been lifelines to so many throughout the pandemic. These already-stretched organisations have experienced increased demand for their services over the past 18 months, alongside growing financial pressures that have left them struggling to survive.

"I’m pleased that we’ve been able to help more than 100 community organisations at this challenging time. I will continue to do all I can to support them as London rebuilds and recovers.”

bodybuilder champ was a homeless teenager A Dulwich-based personal trainer has credited her love of fitness with turning her life around after becoming homeless as a teenager.

Kerry Ann Haywood, who works at Everyone Active’s Dulwich Leisure Centre, says she hopes her story will inspire others to believe they can succeed in life.

At sixteen she was made homeless but after a tough few years and finding a job in the sales industry she then discovered a passion for fitness.

She first joined the leisure centre in 2011 working as an instructor before qualifying as a personal trainer and starting her own business in 2014.

Two years ago she took up body building and entered her first competition. By the end of the year she had taken home four trophies.

During lockdown,

despite the financial challenges, she pivoted her work and came up with a ‘doorstep weight drop off’ programme and continued training clients online.

“I have faced a lot of challenges in life, but I think it’s really important to stay strong,” she said.

“I love training, I’ve got a deep passion for bodybuilding and I find it’s a great way to channel my creativity.

“But the second lockdown really hit me hard mentally. I’m only human, and we all get down days, but I knew I had to find a way to keep my business going.

“By offering a safe way to drop off and collect weights, I was able to keep my business afloat.

“When May came around I knew I had to get back on track and find something to focus on again, which is why I decided to start training again for my next competition.

“Not only was it great for me physically, but mentally too.”

Next up she hopes to enter the Naturals Regional Qualifier this September, in The Pro Tan Naturals Cup. She hopes this will take her all the way to Arnold Sports Festival, held at Birmingham’s NEC in October.

Councillor on the run

A Southwark councillor is running a marathon for charity despite barely running since the age of 13.

James McAsh, who is a Labour councillor in the Goose Green ward and a primary school teacher in Brixton, decided to take on the 26mile challenge after vowing to get fit through the Couch to 5k programme.

James had started running to lose some weight earlier this year when he was invited to be one of Southwark Council’s runners in this year’s marathon, in support of the Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers in Peckham.

“In a moment of hubris I thought I’d run the whole marathon,” he said.

“It’s a really long way! 5k is nothing in comparison.”

James has developed a training plan with the help of a colleague at school

and is preparing for the October 4 race with four races of varying lengths each week.

The Southwark Day Centre for Asylum Seekers helps asylum seekers in the borough with their health and education, among a wide range of services. The centre was chosen by Southwark mayor Cllr Barrie Hargrove as the charity the borough would be supporting in this year’s marathon.

James wants to raise £1,500 by the start of the race. With over £650 so far, he is nearly halfway.

“Being able to raise the issue of the rights of asylum seekers is great,” James said. “I guess it’s just a coincidence that Barrie chose that organisation just before the Afghanistan crisis hit.”

A new weekday timeable planned

travel via St Helier and Tooting, and two via Hackbridge to combine to four in the Streatham, Tulse Hill, Herne Hill to London Blackfriars / Sutton section.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Govia Thameslink Railway says a new timetable reinstating almost 1,000 trains a week will come into force next month.

The weekday-only changes, planned from Monday, September 6, will provide additional trains across Southern, Thameslink and Great Northern lines.

The changes will be welcomed by frustrated commuters who have seen cancellations and delays on top of ‘savage cuts’ - as criticised by Liberal Democrat Caroline Pidgeon.

Almost 200 extra trains compared with the current timetable, introduced in July as a result of COVID-19-related shortages, will be running from Monday to Friday.

Govia Thameslink Railway’s chief operating officer Steve White said: “In anticipation of the return of schools and more passengers returning to the office, much of our service will be expanded from September 6.

“Like many other businesses our staffing levels continue to be affected by the pandemic but the new timetable has been planned to make better use of the drivers we have available, providing more trains, more reliably.

“The COVID third wave this summer has been the most challenging throughout the pandemic to balance the availability of our resources with the needs of our customers. We apologise if you have been affected.

“These changes will ensure we provide you with an increase in trains and provide a more reliable service as we steadily work to overcome the legacy of the pandemic. As people come back to using the railway, we will continue to adapt our services to match demand.”

The changes include: Bedford to St Pancras International and Gatwick Airport Two services per hour will run all day between Bedford and Gatwick Airport via Redhill from September 6. In combination with Thameslink services between Bedford and Brighton, there will now be up to four services per hour between Bedford and St Pancras International.

Four services per hour will run between St Albans and Sutton from 6 September, resulting in more stopping services across the route.

Gatwick Airport to London Bridge via Redhill There will be an additional two trains per hour on this route.

Two services per hour will run all day between Bedford and Gatwick Airport via Horley, Salfords, Earlswood, Redhill, Purley, East Croydon and Norwood Junction. These trains continue to Bedford as described in the section above.

Sutton to London Blackfriars (Sutton to St Albans) There will be an additional two trains per hour on this route, to four trains per hour in total. Two trains per hour will

Bakerloo Line Extension: ‘Not in my lifetime’ says TfL board member

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Transport for London (TfL) board member has claimed the long-awaited Bakerloo Line extension is unlikely to happen in her lifetime.

Former Lewisham councillor Mee Ling Ng, speaking at the most recent board meeting of London’s transport agency, urged TfL staff to give local authorities and communities more clarity on “what schemes are still in, what schemes are out, what schemes are actually being delayed till the next generation. We’re talking about 20-25 years.

“I doubt I will see the extension of the Bakerloo line in my lifetime…

Nevertheless I think that should be one of our ambitions.”

The Bakerloo Line extension, which if built would run from its current terminus at Elephant & Castle southeast to Lewisham via the Old Kent

Road area, has been in the works for about twenty years. But Covid-19 has taken a heavy toll on TfL’s finances and the extension has been put on hold as part of the agency’s funding agreement with the government.

"We are being realistic about what is affordable over the next decade,” TfL said in September last year. “Very large projects from the Mayor's Transport Strategy, particularly Crossrail 2 and Bakerloo line extension, are still relevant and aligned to the Department for Transport's decarbonisation plan.

"However, given current affordability constraints, our immediate priority for these is safeguarding, although they are still likely to be needed in the future to support long-term growth and modal shift in London.”

Without the extension the wide array of new tower blocks planned or proposed for the Old Kent Road area will be left without enough public transport, according to TfL - meaning

Orpington to Luton / London Blackfriars Fewer peak-time-only services will run between Orpington and Luton.

Stations between Luton and St Pancras International have stops on the Bedford and Gatwick Airport via Redhill or St Albans to Sutton services referenced above.

Customers at stations on the Catford Loop should use the all-day service between Sevenoaks and London Blackfriars.

East Grinstead to London Bridge The one morning and evening peak Thameslink service will not run on this route from Monday 6 September.

Southern services will continue to run.

Customers travelling to/from London Bridge will need to change trains at East Croydon.

Caterham and Tattenham Corner to London Bridge Direct fast services to London Bridge will be reintroduced on this route on an every 30 minute basis.

Beckenham Junction to London Bridge Services will run between Beckenham Junction and London Bridge every 90 minutes throughout the day. Additional services will run at school times to provide improved connections in the Dulwich area.

Customers at stations such as West Norwood and seeking to travel to or from London Bridge should use the “via Norwood Junction” option in www. nationalrail.co.uk journey planners to

more plans may be blocked.

In the absence of the Bakerloo line extension, in March this year private company Trampower told the News it was on track to submit a new planning application for its “Southwark Supertram” by the end of 2021 - with a possible launch date of 2025.

The proposed tramline would see a route to run from London Bridge to

show additional journey options.

London Bridge to London Victoria Most services will not run on this route. Two morning peak services will operate (07:50 and 08:20 London Victoria to London Bridge) plus some late evening services. Customers should change at Norwood Junction for fast services to or from London Bridge.

Epsom to London Bridge via Carshalton Beeches Fast services between Epsom and London Bridge will run every half-hour, the exception being a reduced frequency in the early morning. Trains from Epsom to London Bridge will depart at 05:45, 07:16, 08:15 then every 30 mins until 22:45.

Uckfield to London Bridge The hourly service from Uckfield will run as half-hourly between 06:33 and 07:33 to support peak time and school travel on the route. The service will be hourly at busy times, but will reduce to every two-hours in the middle of the day when trains are quieter in the following periods: Uckfield to London Bridge: 10:3016:30 London Bridge to Uckfield: 09:0715:07 and 21:07-23:07

Sutton to London Victoria via West Croydon Up to four trains per hour will run between Sutton and London Victoria via West Croydon at busy times, with two trains per hour at quieter times.

There will however be a change at busy times, with fewer trains running where there is less demand such as away from London Victoria in the morning rush hour, or towards London Victoria in the afternoon.

Denmark Hill via Newington, Elephant and Castle and Walworth.

The woman approached the man in Stockwell Tube station on Sunday, May 30, and pushed her knees into the back of his, unbalancing him. He was not seriously hurt but the incident aggravated a previous knee injury.

British Transport Police officers released a CCTV image this week of a woman they want to speak to in connection with the incident.

Possible train strike looms as legionella bacteria traces found

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Thameslink workers could go on strike after a “potentially lethal” bacteria was found on some trains, a major transport union has warned - just days after the same union called off a Tube strike planned for this week.

RMT declared a dispute with train operator Govia Thameslink Railway (GTR) on Monday after traces of the legionella bacteria were found on seven toilets across four trains. Thameslink serves several Southwark stations, including London Bridge, Elephant & Castle, Denmark Hill and Herne Hill.

The union said it was prepared to ask its members if they wanted to go on strike if Thameslink does not take “urgent action”.

Airborne water droplets containing legionella can cause Legionnaires’ disease, a kind of pneumonia that can be very serious. One in four people with underlying health conditions die of Legionnaires’ disease, according to US public health authorities.

GTR said they had picked up small

traces of the bacteria and pointed out that no one had ever contracted legionnaire’s disease from a train. They added that the toilets where the bacteria had been found were bleached and drained. RMT said this was “pitifully inadequate” and added that the train operator was “gambling with the health of passengers and staff alike.”

General secretary Mick Lynch said on Monday: "RMT has been raising concerns over Legionella on the Siemens Thameslink fleet for weeks now and the latest cavalier approach from the company is pitifully inadequate and is an outright gamble with passenger and staff health.

"We have now declared a dispute and be in no doubt if we don't get serious action we will ballot our members and do whatever is required to end this reckless approach to a potentially lethal situation on these increasingly busy trains."‎ Rob Mullen, train services director at Thameslink and Great Northern, said: "A very low level of legionella was found to be present during testing in a small number of our Thameslink Class 700 train toilets.

"While it is extremely unlikely this would cause any harm to passengers or colleagues, the toilets affected were immediately locked out of use.

"The trains were taken out of service and these toilets have now been drained, bleached and had their tanks completely refilled."

It comes after RMT called off the strikes planned for Tuesday, August 24 and Thursday, August 26, in response to a dispute over rotas on the Night Tube service.

But talks with TfL and the conciliation service ACAS have led to RMT suspending the strike for now, although Mr Lynch said they "remain in dispute" with the transport agency.

He added: "Following further progress in ACAS talks today our Executive has decided that there are sufficient grounds to suspend next week's tube strike action. We remain in dispute and will be engaging in further discussions with a view to reaching a settlement.

"I want to thank our reps and our members on London's Underground whose hard work, resolve and unity has been decisive in terms of the progress we have been able to achieve so far.”

Swerving bus comes a cropper

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A bus crashed into the side of Bermondsey Tube station on Tuesday evening last week but luckily no one was injured, according to Transport for London (TfL).

The 47 bus was trying to get out of the way of an emergency services vehicle when it swerved onto the pavement and into the canopy that comes out from the station roof at around 6.30pm

on Tuesday, August 17. Neither traffic on Jamaica Road nor services from the station were affected by the incident, according to the transport agency.

There was minor damage to both the bus, which is operated by Stagecoach, and the canopy.

A spokesperson for TfL said: “Thankfully there were no injuries when a route 47 bus clipped a canopy outside Bermondsey Tube station.

This happened at low speed while manoeuvring out of the path of an emergency services vehicle.”

No one should be left hungry

N

ext week schools across south London return after a well-earned break for pupils, teachers and school staff who have all worked so hard in very difficult circumstances over the last eighteen months during the COVID-19 pandemic.

My congratulations to pupils and the parents, teachers and support staff who have supported them on the fantastic GCSE, BTEC and A-level results achieved by so many in Southwark and Lambeth.

Unlike other countries such as Germany and the USA, the UK’s Conservative government has failed disastrously to provide the level of funding needed to help pupils whose education was hit particularly badly by the pandemic to catch up. Labour has published a comprehensive catch-up plan for pupils. Along with my Labour colleagues, I’ll continue to hold the government to account for the inadequate support it is providing to our young people.

MP for Dulwich & West Norwood This week I’ve been visiting summer projects across my constituency that are working with children and young people to provide fun activities and the opportunity to learn new skills during the holidays. In many cases nutritious meals are also being provided, particularly for families on lower incomes. I’m glad that both Southwark and Lambeth councils have again stepped up to the plate to support so many brilliant projects this summer.

Later this week I will be out helping with deliveries from one of our local food banks. The needs being met by our food banks continue to grow

and will increase even further if the government pushes ahead with devastating plans to cut Universal Credit by £20 a week in the autumn.

While I am enormously proud of how many people in our local communities are determined to ensure that no-one should be left hungry, it is deeply shameful that this government’s policies continue to leave so many unable to put food on the table and in need of emergency supplies. I’ll be voting against the cut, and will continue to fight for a future in which no-one in our communities has to struggle to feed their family.

his summer has shown the incredible potential of Southwark’s young people.

We’ve seen Camberwell’s Jadon Sancho helping to take England to the Euros final and Peckham’s Kye Whyte and Imani-Lara Lansiquot both putting Team GB on the Olympic podium.

It has been truly inspiring to see local young people competing for our country on the world’s greatest stages.

That said, you don’t have to look to these lofty heights to see how inspiring young people in our borough are.

Over the last few weeks I’ve had the privilege of meeting young artists, music producers and YouTubers at the Livsey Exchange on the Old Kent Road – a project set up by PemPeople with the support of the council to help local creatives start and grow their ideas and careers. As well as meeting some of the brilliant young people we have on our paid internship and apprenticeship programmes in the council helping to improve our local services.

What is always clear to me every time I meet young people in our borough is that given the opportunity, they can do amazing things.

However, the last two years have I know been some of the most difficult for young people in generations.

That’s why we have launched a new Youth Deal in Southwark. To make sure every young person in our borough has the chance to flourish.

Creating jobs, scholarships, apprenticeships, paid internships, and investing in our youth services, adventure play and mental health support. As well as giving young people a real say in shaping all these opportunities so they work for them.

We were the first council to commit to 100% of children and young people

having access to emotional wellbeing and mental health support. Last year we launched a drop-in mental health hub on Rye Lane called The Nest - open to any young person aged eleven and upwards who feels they need extra support. Under the Youth New Deal, we have committed £200,000 to take the service directly into schools.

We are investing in and reimagining our youth services to ensure they are fit for the future, including a new digital hub to provide comprehensive and up to date information about activities and services for young people, and establishing a new Sure Start for Teenagers to support older children and their families. We also have big plans for the future of our adventure playgrounds, with £3 million of improvements on the way so Southwark’s children and young people can enjoy them for years to come.

A few weeks ago, I was thrilled to see the election of Southwark’s first ever Youth Parliament.

I am grateful to all the young people who have come forward to take part in this hugely important initiative, and offer my warm congratulations to Awele Benokwu and Dreaon McDonald Simms, who have been duly elected as Southwark’s new youth leader and deputy youth leader – I am very much looking forward to working with you. I am also very encouraged by the areas that young people have voted to prioritise for the year ahead in Black Lives Matter, knife crime and mental health.

While we are keen to hear from young people, we will also support their ideas with real investment.

The £1 million Positive Futures for Young Peoples Fund will commission activities for young people across the

borough for two years from 2022-24.

The activities will be shaped by what young people have told us they want – everything from sports, to budgeting skills and CV writing, to art therapy and healthy cooking.

Young people will directly oversee ten per cent of this fund – including members of our Youth Parliament.

The economic consequences of the pandemic have been especially harsh for young people. Through our Next Step campaign, we are linking young people with local education, training or employment opportunities, and are working closely with local businesses and other partners to help broaden the range of opportunities available.

Next month, ten new Southwark Scholars from low-income backgrounds will start their degrees with the full cost of their tuition covered under our scholarship scheme.

Meanwhile, the £2 million Southwark Pioneers Fund will support young entrepreneurs to start and build their own businesses.

The challenges confronting young people are vast, and we know we cannot resolve them all without more support from the government.

That’s why we will be working with partners and allies to lobby the government on our key priorities for young people, and in particular, to make the case for a comprehensive plan for education – and the funding to back it - to support children to recover their lost learning.

Your feelings matter, your voices matter, and know that wherever you find yourself in the coming weeks – whether it’s back at school, starting college or university, or looking for that next opportunity - I am confident that brighter days are ahead.

I really like this idea and it is to be applauded. Appreciate that there may be some health and safety issues but ultimately the benefits outweigh the risks. Seven Islands leisure centre is a joke with its lack of slots for families to swim and how they’ve monetised the sessions for more profit by only putting on adult sessions.

There are more council home schemes to come

I

n this week’s paper we take an overarching look at Southwark Council’s ‘infill’ policy or, rather, how it aims to achieve its election-winning manifesto pledge of building 11,000 new council homes in the next two decades.

We have previously reported on the number and location of new homes sites, but not focused on whether they are infill, rooftop or garage developments.

Excluding large private developments, wider regenerations and changing offices and other buildings into housing, we have instead identified 53 sites so far where homes are being built within estates’ communal spaces, their garages or on top of existing blocks.

Although this list takes what is currently publicly available from the local authority’s own pipeline, it is by no means exhaustive. No doubt there are more schemes to come.

Although ‘infill’ homes specifically, and those that will be built on ‘parks’ and ‘play areas’ have attracted the most attention from campaigners, proposed rooftop developments appear the potentially most disruptive to residents.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle said he could not provide a blanket position on all infill and similar developments in the borough because each one should be judged on a caseby-case basis. There is certainly sense to this, and his argument that few people are against new homes and therefore are broadly supportive of what the council is trying to achieve.

However, the level of disruption experienced during building work, which in many cases will take years, is extremely significant. In some cases, rooftop extensions would only yield a few homes but could require entire blocks to have invasive strengthening work.

It is all well and good to ask where, if not on these sites, can the council build new homes and build them quickly. But it is equally valid to ask why tenants and leaseholders should see estates originally designed with low rise blocks, green space and light fundamentally changed while, all over the borough, luxury homes spring up. Yes, new developments should have 35 per cent affordable housing. But that is still a minority overall of what is being built by developers.

Some estates have worked well with the council to identify suitable spots for development and produce high-quality new housing that is prioritised for people living in that specific area.

Other estates may not yet know the full extent of what is being proposed for their area and face months of getting to grips with complex planning documents, to understand exactly what a new build could mean for them.

We hope that the information we have shared this week helps raise awareness of what plans are being made - and where - so everyone affected has the time and opportunity to make their voice heard.

third Dyslexia fair to be held in Dulwich next month

The free event, run by the educational charity based in Dulwich Village, brings together families, teachers and the wider dyslexia community to share resources and help students navigate their education.

Speakers and panellists include experts in education Dr Susie Nyman, who will focus on multisensory teaching strategies, and Elizabeth Takyi, the founder of the awardwinning organisation Aspire2Dyslexia, who will discuss ‘creating your dyslexic future’.

Primary school dyslexia specialist teacher Ruth Pierce, and secondary school and FE dyslexia expert, Tina Hunter, will also be running one to one advisory clinics.

Ameerah Khan, a psychologist and

neurodiversity coach, will hold group workshops on dyslexia awareness and the importance of emotional literacy.

Running from 10am to 4pm on Sunday, September 5, the event will also include pilates sessions designed especially for children with dyslexia called ‘matching and mirroring’, Chi Kung to help build positivity and resilience, and ‘write sparks’ an active, fun garden workshop for children aged nine and above to inspire their own writing.

Around ten per cent of the population are believed to be dyslexic. Dyslexia is a learning difference which affects information processing, and is often manifested in difficulties with reading and writing. However, with the right support people with dyslexia can excel in any field and often have particular strengths in creative fields, problem solving and oral skills.

Dulwich Park Fair is back and better than ever!

By Cara Cummings If you go down to Dulwich Park this week - well, on Sunday 5th September from 12pm-5pm anyway - you’re in for a big surprise…

After a Covid-induced hiatus, the Dulwich Park Fair is back. And by all accounts, this year’s festivities will be the best yet.

An entirely volunteer-led event, the Fair promises fun for all the family

- with community spirit at its heart.

“We try to run a really friendly, familyorientated event,” says Emily Montague, Chair of Dulwich Park Friends. “There’s lots of free entertainment, interesting food and market stalls… It’s such a lovely atmosphere.

“We really try to have something for everybody, which you can try without spending lots of money. We’re not here to make money from the fair - we run it on a shoestring - but to try and

promote local organisations and raise money for local charities.”

That’s been the Fair’s aim since the very start, says Emily.

“Fifteen or so years ago, there was a very big commercial fair in Dulwich Park,” she explains. “Although it was fun, it caused a lot of damage to the park. We had huge complaints about noise, fireworks, you name it. So we approached the council as Dulwich Park Friends and said: how about a more community-led event?

“We get a small grant from the Neighbourhoods Fund, and all that is put into entertainment - this year we have a really lovely dog show, which will raise money for The Blue Cross.

Dog ownership has shot up during lockdown so we thought: ‘This is the year!’”

After a tough spell for the entertainment industry, Emily is keen to support local performers at this year’s Fair. “Lots of performers have had a really grim year,” she says. “We have two stages this year - The Stage and The Arena - and we’ll have bands playing throughout the day. We’ve never done that before.

“We’ve got choirs, brass bands, dance groups - including one with performers all in their 70s and 80s! The range of people is just wonderful. We’ll have a really interesting and eclectic range of food, too - Spanish paella, Jamaican cuisine, Chinese…

“If you have small children, there’s a chance to pet the animals at Vauxhall City Farm. it might be the first time a 3-year-old has got up close to an

alpaca!”

And whilst this year’s Fair will be an escape from the trials of the last year, Covid safety measures are paramount. “We’re aware that Covid is still around, so we’re encouraging people to spread out across the park,” Emily stresses. “There will be hand sanitation stations at stalls, and we’re

asking our participants to ensure Covid safety measures are in place. I would love people to come and relax, safely, and support all these wonderful local things that are happening.”

Taste Modern Indian dining spicing up Rosendale Road

Since opening its doors in May, the critically acclaimed Heritage Dulwich has gone from strength to strength, reimagining rich and varied traditions of the subcontinent and transforming them into modern Indian dining

Located on Rosendale Road in West Dulwich, the menu takes inspiration from family recipes passed down through generations, and celebrates the diverse and varied ingredients and techniques found across regional India.

Drawing on more than 30 years of experience, Executive Chef, Dayashankar Sharma, has spent years developing an in-depth knowledge of India’s many hyper-regional cuisines.

Dreaming the Magical Dream

The magic of theatre lies in the moment an audience dreams the same dream in unison. For a family back in the warm embrace of Greenwich Theatre on its return to live theatre with two separate productions, Pinocchio and the Wolves of Willoughby Chase, this felt a miraculous moment indeed, writes Ed, Frida and Woody Gray...

As we take our seats before a stage consisting of a rundown fairground and a broken rollercoaster ride we are reminded of the dereliction the last 18 months has brought to London’s Theatreland. The lights go down, the audience hushes and we gratefully fall into our reverie once again. ‘If we all dream the same dream at the same time then it must be real!’ cry the cast of Pinocchio and really real it really is.

This season Artistic Director James Haddrell very fittingly presents two plays that explore the flipside of the realms of

the imagination - the little lies, fantasies and half-truths that we live by to protect ourselves and the ones we love, and the polarising dangerous lies that are told to gain advantage over others to secure nefarious dark ends. Theatre, where suspension of belief is implicit, is the best place to explore these big themes in a world of increasing fantasy, fakery, and twisted truths. For that reason we must make every effort to stop our theatres ever going dark again.

The production of Pinocchio’s much loved journey of self-discovery is not the much visited Walt Disney version, instead we are presented with Anthony Clark’s adaptation of Carlo Collodi’s original 1883 novel. Collodi created Pinocchio at a time when desperate Italian rural workers where migrating to urban centres, innocent of city life and therefore ripe for exploitation. In this production, the wooden boy himself is deftly brought from

log to life by Cassandra Hercules with a perfect blend of innocence, wonder and mischief that greatly appealed to our two young reviewers aged 6 and 8.

Pinocchio’s adventures as he discovers the complexities of the world around him are skilfully revealed through a mix of comical puppetry and song under David Haller’s lively musical direction. Love conquers hate as Pinocchio frees himself from the clutches of streetwise Fellina and Volpino (Reice Weathers and Adam Karim), all the while mentored through this metamorphosis by father Gepetto (Anthony Spargo) and Grillo the cricket (Serin Ibrahim) and finally emerging triumphant and reborn from the belly of a whale as a real living boy who wants only to work hard and look after his father. Our young theatregoers Frida and Woody loved this production: ‘Very, very, very funny’ came the reply when asked what they made of it all. I checked

both noses and they remained the same length despite the huge grins breaking out underneath. Would they do the same for their father I enquired? ‘Very funny’, came the reply.

A similar quest for truth lies at the heart of Haddrell’s production of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, written by the respected children’s author Joan Aiken in 1962 and adapted here by Russ Turney.

Once again we are in the 19th century, this time in England under the reign of fictitious King James III where we are told by a mysterious stranger on a train, a new channel tunnel has let in wolves from Russia or Eastern Europe, ’or somewhere’, hungry wolves that watch from the woods. We are transported into a land of mist and snow and ice. But all is not what it seems in this version of England, where plucky Bonnie (Alice De-Warenne) and her cousin Sylvia (Cassandra Hercules) have to learn to overcome their innocence

with a number of ‘top secret’ papers in a briefcase attached to his wrist.

SpitLip make light work of this ludicrous tale refusing to see it so much as a tale of British derring-do than as an absurd feat of luck pulled off by an even more absurd group of characters we might recognise as the British elite. This satirical take on the operation, especially its skewering of the idea of a British ruling class ‘born to lead’, is interesting and timely but it has one major flaw: the success of the operation. Even if the whole thing is pulled off frequently in spite of the interventions of the dashing head of the operation, Ewan Montagu (played by the brilliant and energetic Natasha Hodgson), his cavalier and privileged attitude never really meets

its downfall, a fact briefly acknowledged by the musical and then glossed over by the finale. The worst thing that happens to him is that he is revealed to be a fool, a comeuppance that at the very least he might have considered a fate worse than death were he self-aware enough to know it had happened.

But despite the limits of its satirical aim, Operation Mincemeat is a laugh a minute show produced on a shoe string budget that somehow never stops it from feeling like a big, camp production. This is in large part thanks to Felix Hagan’s wonderful music and the extraordinary performances from the five actors who switch seamlessly and utterly believably between characters. Although all five give

brilliant performances, it is Jak Malone who stands out. In one moment having you roll on the floor with laughter in his role as an outlandish coroner and in the next having you on the floor for quite different reasons in his heart rending role as Hester, the stoic and yet grief-stricken secretary.

This clever balance between laughter and tears, lightness and weight is the show’s real magic. If you like joy – and sequins – this one’s for you.

by Aiken’s entourage of characters. A standout performance by Anthony Spargo in delightful evil governess mode as the tenacious Miss Slighcarp was a great hit with the audience. Our two young reviewers left the theatre that evening evermore watchful for the wolves that hide among us, and evermore certain of how they will boldly take them to task if they ever dare to emerge from the shadows.

blue plaque nominees are now in

There’s an artist, a codebreaker and social reformers

The nominations are in for the next round of people who could be honoured with a Southwark blue plaque. Five people with connections to the borough have been put forward this year - but only one will be chosen, writes Kit Heren...

The Southwark Blue Plaque scheme was the brainchild of Southwark News and Southwark Heritage Association. The national English Heritage scheme insists on buildings needing to still be standing, after getting Southwark Council on board our scehme has seen over fifty placed across the borough.

Candidates this year include people from the arts, literary, business, and social work spheres - as well as a renowned figure in the history of British espionage.

Helen Aldwinckle Helen Aldwinckle (pictured) was one of the leading female codebreakers at Bletchley Park, which hosted the British government’s programme to crack the German Enigma code in the Second World War. She died in April last year aged 99.

Helen, originally from Aberdeen, was recruited straight from university into Bletchley Park in 1942. She was first set to work on the vital task of triaging messages before being put in charge of a familiarisation course for the Americans who arrived in the summer of 1943. She later worked in the Quiet Room in Hut 6 at Bletchley Park, taking on codes that could not be cracked by the main codebreaking team, the Watch.

Helen married her husband John Aldwinckle in 1945. After the war he was a British intelligence agent in various cities across Europe, including in Berlin.

She came with him and began working as a broadcaster for the British Forces Network and for German radio station Westdeutscher Rundfunk.

When they came back to the UK, Helen became a German-English translator, including working on a biography of the Russian designer and artist El Lissitzky.

She later managed London art galleries.

Helen lived at 76 Farquhar Road SE19 from 1979 to 2014, spending her final years in a care home. John died in 2012.

Helen is survived by four children.

James Butterworth The Reverend James Butterworth was a Methodist minister who set up Clubland, a pioneering youth club, in Walworth in 1932. It became renowned for its mixture of social and faith based activities. James Butterworth was an energetic fundraiser and attracted many of the famous names of the day to the club, including Bob Hope, Laurence Olivier and Queen Mary, the wife of King George V. James came from a tough upbringing in Lancashire. “From the age of 12 he was working in the cotton mills,” his daughter said in a Southwark Council film. “His mother had been widowed, his father

sadly had committed suicide… Dad being the eldest, he went to work.” He served in the trenches in the First World War. James met people in the war who were interested in setting up youth clubs, according to his son James. He became a minister at Didsbury theological college.

After leaving college he chose a placement on Walworth Road in 1922 in order to continue his interest in social work.

“He had a vision of a club and a church combined,” said his friend Dr Gordon Lyle. “So that young people could have a complete environment of the spiritual side and the physical side.” The club became Clubland - a place for young people in the area. James also took young people on annual trips to the channel island Guernsey, where he met his wife, Anna Castain.

Sadly large parts of Clubland and the church were destroyed in the Blitz in 1940. Services continued to be held in the remains of the buildings. After the war

he went on a lecturing and fundraising trip to the US in order to rebuild - even persuading Bob Hope to come to London to give a charity performance.

Jimmy retired from Clubland in 1974 after more than 50 years, with his health worsening. He died eighteen months later.

Len Deighton Len Deighton (b. 1929) is a renowned British author, best known for his spy novels and thrillers, such as The Ipcress File and Bomber. Bomber is thought to be the first novel written using a word processor. The Ipcress File was made into a 1965 film starring Michael Caine.

He lived in Merrick Square in Borough during the 1960s, where he wrote many of his best-known works.

Deighton’s skill and interest in cooking is less well-known. He wrote two cookery books and even a cookery “strip” for The Observer newspaper.

Francis Peek Francis Peek was a businessman and advocate for social causes in the nineteenth century.

He spent much of his early life running the family tea importing business. In 1855 he took over Peek, Winch and Co., the firm his father began, and grew it into an extraordinarily successful business.

Peek later championed the preservation of London’s open spaces and persuaded Dulwich College Estate to create a public space from their lands, which became Dulwich Park in 1890. He provided the funding. He also donated more than £500,000 to charitable and religious causes, including paying for the building of the new church of Holy Trinity, Beckenham as a memorial to his parents.

Peek was also a supporter of prison reform. He died aged 65 in 1899.

Barbara Steveni Barbara Steveni, who died last year, was an artist and activist based in Peckham. As well as being a wide ranging conceptual artist in her own right, she also co-founded the Artist Placement Group in the 1960s, which aimed to move artists away from galleries and into ‘real-world’ situations like governments and corporations.

Barbara was born in Iran, where her father worked for the Foreign Office.

She lived in Peckham from 1995 until her death and was an important and active presence in the local art scene and further afield.

Big St Paul’s crowd sees lively affair as hosts salvage point

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk FISHER COLLECTED their fourth point in their third SCEFL Premier Division game this season with a 2-2 draw against Welling Town in front of a 142 crowd at St Paul’s last weekend.

The Fish were one of the sides in the division in action after they lost 1-0 to Raynes Park Vale in the extra preliminary round of the FA Cup earlier this month.

The hosts’ Courtney Swaby had his side’s first effort but his shot was

saved, before Fisher goalkeeper Dan Carpanini kept out Carl Oblitey.

Malachi Coker then went close to an opener for Fisher after pouncing on an error in midfield but his lob bounced to safety off the crossbar.

And the Fish’s luck was out again when Jacob Katonia beat away stopper Dan Mamas but the woodwork again saved Welling.

Mamas then sprang off his line to get to the ball before Coker from Jack Gibbons’ pass, before Coker fired just wide.

The home side continued to pile on the pressure and felt they should

have had a penalty when Katonia was bundled over by Luke Coleman, but play was waved on.

Fisher paid for those misses when just before half-time Oblitey broke away to give Carpanini little chance with fierce shot.

Fisher responded well after the break with Mamas tipping Swaby’s effort around the post. But Welling didn’t escape for long as a handball gave Rob Brown the chance to level from the spot, and he made no mistake.

Hammers prevail over Hamlet in thriller Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET Women were beaten 4-3 in a friendly thriller against West Ham under-21s at Champion Hill last weekend.

The Hammers were 4-1 up after 31 minutes, with Mia Cruickshank – who spent time on loan at Dulwich last season – one of the scorers for the visitors.

Jazz Lacrette had made it 2-1 eleven minutes in before West Ham all but wrapped up the win.

Philp pounced from a corner.

Rebecca May came on at half-time for Rosie Stone and made an almost immediate impact when she scored to make it 4-3 from Sophie Manzi’s pass.

This followed Kapp’s 26 from 14 balls as Invincibles posted 121-6, skipper Dane Van Niekerk also making 26 to confirm her status as the tournament’s leading run scorer.

Braves skipper Anya Shrubsole (two for 16) opted to bowl on winning the toss and she and Lauren Bell (two for 24) backed up the decision with nine successive dot balls.

undistinguished bowling by their replacements. The stand had reached 65 off 15 overs when the light drizzle that had persisted for most of the innings turned to heavy rain and brought about a declaration on 154-8 after 53 overs.

Keaton finished on 36, off 57 balls, and Crawford-Khan 28 off 39.

The rain stopped during the interval, leaving Chessington with 47 overs to get the runs. Crawford-Khan and Gunning opened the bowling and took a wicket apiece to reduce their opponents to 27-2 after 10.1 overs. Khan and Brown soon replaced them, but although Brown bowled a miserly spell of nine overs for 16 runs they were unable to achieve a breakthrough as the third wicket pair added 27 in 14 overs. Purshouse thus turned to Gledhill, who took the next four wickets in six overs for just six runs. Khan returned to take the seventh wicket with the score on 82.

“I always felt if we got runs on the board in a final the pressure is always on the batters to go and get it and everything worked out for us. I couldn’t have asked for more.

“It’s incredible to win a Lord’s final and a special moment. One day when I retire I can look back and say I won at Lord’s.”

Meanwhile some imaginative hitting by James Woolman, who struck three sixes in making 29 off 38 balls, had enlivened proceedings, and he had lifted the score to 98 when he was bowled by Gledhill.

Numbers ten and eleven ignored their captain’s orders to defend and were both bowled swinging across the line to give Gledhill his final two wickets. He had bowled 9.2 overs to take seven wickets for just 20 runs. Chessington had lost their last eight wickets for 46 runs to be all out for exactly 100 with 5.4 overs to spare.

Dulwich thus remain at the top of the table, but Old Wimbledonians and Bank of England also won, so all three clubs are still in contention for the two promotion spots.

The format switches to 50 overs per side for the final two games. This weekend, Dulwich travel to Walton on Thames, who are currently in seventh place, for the first of these.

There were three penalties at the York Community Stadium, Millwall attacker Sean O’Brien giving his side the lead from the spot in the first half.

But the Tigers hit back through two

Harry Wood penalties in three secondhalf minutes, with Arthur Penney sent off and Will Jarvis adding a third in injurytime.

The Lions went in front in the 22nd minute when left-back Junior Tiensia was fouled and O’Brien made no mistake from twelve yards.

Nugent’s side went close to going 2-0 up but Jayden Davis’ effort hit the crossbar.

And with fifteen minutes left Penney handled Brandon Fleming’s cross giving Wood the chance to level.

Wood made it 2-1 after Josh Hinds had been fouled before Jarvis finished Fleming’s cross.

“It was a tough game against a strong Hull side in really good surroundings of York’s stadium,” Nugent told Millwall’s media.

“We were really solid in the first half and went on to take the lead with a penalty. Junior was really good in the overall game and also won the spot-kick which Sean converted.

“In the second-half, they came at us a bit but we created a few chances and

could’ve made it 2-0, but they gathered a bit of momentum and the game changed.

“I thought we were a bit unlucky with the penalty that we conceded, and equally the red which Arthur received - I think [goalkeeper] Joe [Wright] would’ve been behind him to save it, but he wasn’t to know that.

“Two minutes later, we give away an absolutely ridiculous penalty which there was no need to do whatsoever - the lads have got to learn there.

“The game is then gone and we’re chasing it, then there is no challenge

made in the box for the final goal.

“The lads have got to learn that if you concede the first goal and go down to ten men, make sure you stay solid and stay in the game - the second one killed it off.”

Next up for Millwall’s under-23s is a trip to Coventry City on Monday, September 13.

The Lions’ 3-1 defeat to Cardiff last Saturday was grating for several reasons and means Millwall have picked up two points from their opening four games, the same total as Neil Harris’ side four years ago.

Before Morrison made it 3-1, Flint had beaten Jake Cooper to a cross that wasn’t exactly whipped in with menace as Ryan Giles chipped the ball to the far post.

It wasn’t as if Cardiff had suddenly unleashed a secret weapon, as all five of their goals in the league this season had been headers.

There would have been plenty of squirming in seats when the players sat through the replays at Calmont Road on Monday.

Gary Rowett has built his side on strong defensive foundations, but when they crumble the Lions are in trouble. It’s not as if they’re going to out-score their opponent in a free-for-all.

Millwall have only scored more than one goal once in their last ten Championship games. That was in the 4-1 win over Bristol City last May, and that’s their only victory in their last ten league games.

It has concerning echoes of the start of the 2019-20 season, when Harris made the changes he wanted in the transfer window and promised his side would

be better. But they weren’t and Harris, feeling he couldn’t improve the side, left.

Millwall signed five players early in the transfer window, but that extra attacker with real creative quality continues to elude them.

At least Benik Afobe has found goalscoring form. It’s two in two league games for the on-loan Stoke striker. They haven’t exactly been top-quality efforts but he won’t care and the most important thing for strikers is getting a whiff of it and believing things are going their way.

Afobe has a great chance to build on his start at home to Blackpool.

For once, it’s at the other end of the pitch where Millwall need to step up their game.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GEORGE LONG’S spectacular performance late on in the 3-1 win over Cambridge United on Tuesday night perhaps meant there was one person from a home perspective feeling a little bit uncomfortable.

Millwall were coasting into the third round of the competition when the visitors kicked late and created a flurry of chances.

But they couldn’t find a way past Long who made three brilliant saves and Bartosz Bialkowski will have been reminded that the current number two didn’t join Millwall “to sit on the bench”.

Long actually wears the number one shirt, with 33 on Bialkowski’s back.

Long should now get another chance in the third round of the competition along with players such as Connor Mahoney, who set up the third goal for Matt Smith after winning the ball in his own half and surging up the pitch.

Long recognised the importance of the win to give those players competitive action.

“Yeah, 100 per cent,” he said. “When you’re not playing in the league at the moment you want games to keep you sharp and show what you can do.

“It’s only a good thing to be in the next round and I’m sure that’s the same for a few of the other boys in the squad who are looking forward to more minutes.

“I was probably busier than I expected to be but it’s always nice to help the boys out and make a few saves.

“At 3-1 it’s one of those scorelines where if it stays that way you’re comfortable but if they nick a goal back towards the end it does get a bit tense.

But fortunately we kept the scoreline where it was at 3-1.

“The boys defended really well. There were a few goalmouth scrambles in there that seemed to go on for ages. But we dealt with it and saw the game out well, which was pleasing.”

It’s one quirk of the season so far that Long has two wins from the two games he has played – after also starting in the 2-1 win over Portsmouth in the previous round – while Bialkowski is still waiting for a first win in four.

There is no question around the Lions’ mood despite two draws and two defeats from the first four league games.

But, ahead of facing Blackpool this Saturday, the win over the League One side came at a good time.

“You want to win every game you play in and progress in the cup, especially for the lads who haven’t been playing in the league,” Long said.

“A win is always important for morale and to bring that confidence to everyone at the club. I think we did it in good fashion. Especially after conceding, to bounce back with a couple of goals in quick succession was important.

“The positive thing is the fine margins that we’re losing by, in terms of things that can be rectified. We’re not getting played off the park.

“At Cardiff it was set-pieces which we can look at and analyse and definitely do better at.

“I think we’ll keep working on that and get them right. Then you start to slowly turn losses into draws and then churn wins out on the back of those things.”

And he has his eyes on that main prize from a stopper’s perspective.

“I said it the day I signed, I’ve not come here to sit on the bench,” Long insisted. “My aim is to be playing and be number one at the club.

“That will continue to be my aim, keep pushing and give the gaffer decisions to make and just control what I can.

“As always, with the majority of goalkeepers wherever you go, you’ve got a good working relationship and everyone gets what the situation is like.

“Me and Bart have got on brilliantly from day one. It’s a great goalkeeping group led by LT. I can’t speak highly

enough of the fellow goalkeepers.

“There are always subtle differences [between clubs] in terms of goalkeeping. Your job doesn’t really change but I think a fresh pair of eyes to watch me and help me progress was exactly what I needed.

“LT has been fantastic. He played a big part in bringing me to the club.

I can’t speak highly enough of our relationship so far and I feel like I’m really progressing.

“It’s rewarding when on a night like tonight bits you’ve been working on in training come out and you can make those big saves at important moments.”

Long felt Millwall showed what they were about on Tuesday when they

bounced straight back from going behind to George Williams’ goal, as Murray Wallace scored twice before half-time and Smith got his first of the season.

Long added: “It’s that resilience. At any moment you can concede a goal.

Obviously no one wants to but they worked a set-piece well and nicked a goal, probably against the run of play.

“But it’s how you react is the most important thing and I think we did that really well to equalise and then go in front.

“Second half I was busy at times but that’s what I’m there for, to keep the goals out and do my best to make saves when needed.”

The man who played a pivotal role in Millwall’s run to the FA Cup quarter-finals in 2019 was the saviour for the Lions as they turned a potential shock into a relatively easy passage to round three.

It seems the Scot has a thing for cup competitions, just like Millwall do. Wallace scored the winners in the FA Cup fourth round and fifth round against Everton and AFC Wimbledon as Millwall got to the last eight three seasons ago.

It was a night of firsts for Wallace. His first-ever goals in the League Cup and his

first-ever brace for Millwall.

Gary Rowett reckoned there was another first as well, as he said he had never seen the ultra-fit defender suffer from cramps. He revealed Wallace could hardly move in the final ten minutes, so perhaps we can forgive him for not completing the perfect hat-trick – right foot, left foot, header – as he was denied when he hit the crossbar in the second half.

It’s been a tough start to the Championship season for Rowett’s men.

They have collected just two points from their first four league matches but have found crumbs of comfort in this competition. This win will be a big bonus and should initiate some positive momentum going into an early-season big clash against Blackpool on Saturday, with both sides looking for that elusive first league win of the campaign.

The fans had been muttering their discontent at the way the season has begun and Cambridge’s opener would have done nothing to improve that mood.

Another set-piece and another goal in the against column for Millwall. It’s the fifth set-piece goal conceded this season.

Jake Cooper’s sloppiness in giving away a

cheap foul was punished to the maximum.

The U’s had clearly done their homework on Millwall’s set-piece problem, specifically those in-swingers the Lions are struggling with this season.

Ben Worman’s free-kick from the right was curled in at pace, and George Williams broke away from his marker to head the ball across George Long and into the bottom-left corner.

However, the response from the home side was prompt. They did not feel sorry for themselves, they rolled up their sleeves and embraced the challenge they faced – and kept the crowd on their side.

They say good things come to those who wait and that was proved correct.

Just six minutes after going behind the hosts levelled. Someone needed to step up and Millwall’s cup sensation did exactly that.

Matt Smith chested down a long pass and then played the ball out to Wallace on the left-hand side. It was if he’d seen a video of Neymar and decided, ‘I’m doing this.’ He cut inside on to his right foot and drilled the ball low and hard right into the bottom-right corner to out of nowhere bring the Den crowd to life and lift his team-mates.

We have spoken about set-pieces being a problem for Millwall defensively, but they should get plenty of joy from them in attacking situations with the quality they have in the air with the likes of Smith, Cooper, Shaun Hutchinson, Daniel Ballard and more.

That threat was evident for Wallace’s second goal. Connor Mahoney – another player like Long and Ben Thompson looking to earn his place in the side in the league – delivered a corner towards Smith.

The big striker would have expected to nod in from six yards, but his effort was blocked and the loose ball fell to Wallace, who tapped home his and Millwall’s second to turn the game around.

It was a big mood-lifter around the ground as the Lions went in at half-time with the lead.

Former QPR man Smith is really knocking on the door for a Championship start now. His performances since coming off the bench against Fulham and here show if you give him the service, he will reward you.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL ARE out to avoid their worst start to a league campaign since 2013-14 when they host Blackpool at The Den this Saturday.

but it is effective, something that Millwall need right now after the start they have made in the league.

He enhanced his chances of a start this weekend by also getting on the scoresheet.

Mahoney won the ball deep and charged forward. He twisted and turned on the right side of the box before crossing low, and his good work was rewarded at the second attempt by Smith, who all but sealed Millwall’s passage into the third round for the second year in a row.

However, there remains concerns, particularly with defensive sloppiness.

Long was forced into three good saves, and had any of them gone in then it could well have made for an interesting end to the tie. The keeper denied Sam Smith, Williams and then brilliantly kept out substitute Jack Lankester’s deflected strike.

There was another positive moment with ten minutes left when Alex Mitchell – who has agreed a new long-term deal – came on for his senior debut.

Millwall need to pull their socks up at the back, but this was the ideal tonic before they host Blackpool this Saturday aiming for those first three points of the season.

Matt Smith celebrates making it 3-1

If the Lions fail to beat the Seasiders then they will have the fewest points at this stage of a campaign since Steve Lomas’ brief and unhappy time in charge eight years ago.

You wouldn’t have put money on this one being a game after which Millwall could drop into the bottom three. But then again West Ham are top of the Premier League, which shows how false tables are at this point of the season, so there is no need to panic.

And Millwall have enough players with enough experience to show they won’t do that. They fell one behind to Cambridge on Tuesday night but extricated themselves from that awkward position.

Manager Gary Rowett doesn’t get ruffled too easily, and he’ll be able to put things in perspective. The Lions have found it tough against the four teams they’ve faced so far in recent seasons. Perhaps they are better off learning tough lessons early on, though Rowett wouldn’t have foreseen set-piece weakness as one of those things he and his staff will have to study carefully to see what’s going wrong.

“We’ve had four hard games to start the season but if you want to be a good team you have to navigate these fixtures,” Rowett said.

“I saw Marco Silva saying his side put in a perfect performance against Millwall. You have to give them credit for that.

“The other three games, in my opinion, there was nothing in them.

We played really well against QPR but we allowed them a chance to get back into the game, which was disappointing.

“We should have beaten Blackburn but conceded a poor goal. And then against Cardiff I don’t think there is much in the game, we have a couple

of chances before they score and then they scored from a set-piece, we hit the bar when we should make it 2-2, then they go down the other end and score again.

“Of course there are areas we can improve on but there have also been areas we’ve been quite pleased with.

“It’s not the start we wanted but we’ve had periods of the season when we’ve picked up two points from four games but it hasn’t affected our points tally overall.

“That’s the important factor, it’s a long season but of course we want to get that first win quite quickly.”

Rowett is without the injured Shaun Hutchinson, Danny McNamara and Mason Bennett against Blackpool.

The first two are expected to be out for up to six weeks, but the Lions hope Leonard won’t be absent for more than two weeks.

and centre-forward this summer, and signed Daniel Ballard on loan from Arsenal and Benik Afobe on loan from Stoke City.

The Lions already wanted one more attacking player, but may now need to add to their defence in the short term.

Rowett’s preferred system is a back three but with Hutchinson and Leonard out he only has four centrebacks, though Mahlon Romeo could also play on the right side of the defence.

The problem for Millwall is they need to move players on before they can recruit, but the market has been slow this summer as teams struggle financially after having no gate income for more than a year.

Rowett admitted his recruitment team are now looking at the defender market after those injuries.

“I think that’s an area we probably need to strengthen, certainly shortterm,” Rowett said. “It’s something we’re looking at and the forward option is something we’ve spoken about previously. We still want to try to bring a player in there.

“Again, we need to balance things off to bring one in, so to bring two in means a little bit more work. But it’s something we’re looking at.”

window to be busier over the last few days.

He replied: “Being really honest, I’ve got no idea. This transfer window has proved to be really unpredictable.

There’s not been very much movement from any clubs.

“We’re one of the clubs who have done as much as anyone. Everyone’s expecting the last week to be a little bit busier, but I’ve heard people say that before only for not much to happen.

“I think we’ll see just how much Covid has affected budgets, what teams are able to do.

“We’ll see, but certainly we’re working hard to remain active to make one or two more signings. Whether we do that or not, time will tell.”

Mitchell, 19, was in the last year of the first professional deal he signed in the summer of 2019.

The Windsor-born defender impressed on loan at Bromley last season. The National League side needed a replacement for injured former Lions centre-back Byron Webster and turned to their neighbours.

Mitchell joined in April and made nine league appearances. Bromley lost just once in those games as they reached the play-offs where they faced Hartlepool United in the quarterfinals.

Hartlepool won 3-2 and went on to win the final before loaning Tyler Burey from Millwall this summer.

Mitchell then impressed boss Gary Rowett, the coaching staff and his team-mates in pre-season. He figured prominently and scored the Lions’ consolation in a 4-1 defeat to a strong Arsenal side.

Mitchell joined the Lions as a fifteenyear-old and made a big impact for Kevin Nugent’s under-23 team last season before the club decided to continue his development in senior football.

Mitchell has had plenty of loan interest this summer from clubs in the Football League, where Millwall feel he can kick on again.

The Lions currently have an injury crisis in defence, with Shaun Hutchinson, Danny McNamara and Ryan Leonard all out.

Millwall could recruit another experienced defender in this window and are assessing the options for a loan move for Mitchell.
