Campaigners say he is the latest councillor to ‘glide through the revolving door’, following a long line of cabinet members, backbenchers and planning officers hired by lobbying firms.

The former council boss, who stepped down in September 2020 after staying on for an extra seven months to steer the local authority’s crisis response during the pandemic, had previously ruled out working with developers.

In a lengthy interview in September last year we reported: “Contrary to some speculation, don’t expect to find John following some of his predecessors and entering the world of property developers.

Instead he intends to revive his practice as a barrister, after taking some time off.”

In a direct quote John said: “I’d like to do something in public service if possible”.

It has since emerged that, while remaining a ward councillor for Champion Hill, he joined The Terrapin Group in December 2020 as chairman. It's a role he says involves no more than two days a month in an advisory capacity - without lobbying.

“What changed is that offers were made to me,” he told the News on Tuesday, when questioned about his career u-turn.

“When I took the role at Terrapin I made it clear that there would be no lobbying but I would be happy to give strategic advice.

“It’s two days a month at most and my primary activity is being a barrister.”

He says the line between ‘strategic advice’ and ‘lobbying’ is ‘very distinct’ and ‘clear’.

“Lobbying is very clearly for a particular project or development and something I wouldn’t be doing,” said John.

Peter John Terrapin describes itself as ‘a market leader working in the arena of politics, property and development’.

Affordable housing campaigners from the 35 per cent campaign have long criticised John’s record on housing, including the large-scale regenerations of the Heygate and Aylesbury Estate and Elephant and Castle town centre during his tenure at Tooley Street.

“Confidence in the planning system has been badly dented by high profile schemes not delivering the affordable housing we need,” the group said.

“That confidence is not improved when the former leader of the council becomes the chair of a lobbying firm whose business is ‘influencing government’, including ‘public authorities’, such as councils.”

It has highlighted that four other sitting Labour councillors have paid positions with similar companies, although under the Public Affairs Code they are unable to work on projects within their own borough or persuade councillors in other boroughs to approve any schemes they are involved in advising.

The 35 per cent campaign has called on Southwark Labour Group to take this one step further and ban all sitting councillors from working for any public affairs company with property developer clients or investors, and to set up a register Pages 25-31

Among Terrapin’s clients past and present are Elephant and Castle shopping centre landlord and developer Delancey (2013-present); Lendlease (2013-2017) and Avanton - the largest developer involved in the Old Kent Road opportunity area - which worked with the firm from 2017-2019 John admits he had intended to avoid taking on this kind of work while still serving his constituents in Champion Hill. Plans to step down as a councillor at the same time as resigning as leader were put on hold due to the pandemic when campaigning was suspended; making a by-election impractical.

He will not stand again in May 2022.

“Whilst I’m confident that there is no conflict of interest, my only regret is that it has given the opportunity for people who have opposed everything I’ve ever done as council leader to attack our work again,” he added. “But it is lovely that they keep on reflecting about ten years of delivery.”

And he does not think banning councillors from public affairs jobs is the right approach.

“That would knock out some sitting councillors and in an inner London borough you will always get people working in these types of roles.

“As long as they are clear about declaring their interests it’s not a terrible problem.

“The reality is that we do need to help developers get permissions and for big schemes to go ahead.”

It is a view given short shrift by campaigners who believe developers have, for too long, been able to shirk their affordable and social housing responsibilities through successful lobbying.

When asked by the News whether the party would cede to campaigners’ demands, a spokesperson for Southwark Labour Group said: “All Labour councillors are subject to comprehensive measures that exist to mitigate against any potential conflicts of interest as and when they may arise.

“These include the Labour Party’s Local Government Code of Conduct, the council’s Code of Conduct, rules for members of the planning committee and the council’s complaints process.

“Residents in Southwark are welcome to refer to these documents as required and to raise any concerns through the appropriate channels.”

Ex-Southwark councillors who have gone on to work as advisors or lobbyists for developers include Liberal Democrat council leader (2002-2010) Nick Stanton OBE, a managing director of Curtin and Co property PR firm involved in the Southwark Metals Development and former deputy leader Kim Humphreys who founded C ​​ arvil Ventures, an ‘independent real estate consultancy’.

BERMONDSEY CARNIVAL - the comeback!

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Some 4,500 people came to the Bermondsey Carnival last Saturday in Southwark Park, according to one of the organisers.

Russell Dryden, who worked on the Carnival this year as part of Blue Bermondsey Business Improvement District (BID) alongside Phil Burkett, said it was “a lovely turnout, with lots of community groups there too. It was a good day for families as well.”

This year was a ‘bitesize’ version of the venerable Southwark Park festival, which dates back to 1900, due to uncertainty around the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions. But 2022 should see the Bermondsey Carnival return to its former glory, Russell said.

“Obviously we’ll sit down with the council,” he said on Monday. “We’ll see how it goes, but we think it’s an exciting partnership - business, the local community, the council, and also stakeholders like local developers getting involved.” Grosvenor, who are developing the Biscuit Factory, sponsored the musical programme this year.

Carnival-goers were treated to music from reggae band Indika, led by local man Phillip Poleon, as well as rock covers band Redriffe and the Unity Music Arts Team, led by singer Stephen Pierre. Attendees could also try out funfair rides, including a ferris wheel, various slides and a bungee trampoline for children.

Bishop accused of capitalising on Covid crisis He appeared in court for alleged sale of fraudulent ‘plague protection kits’ Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell’s Bishop Climate Wiseman has appeared in court accused of capitalising on the Coronavirus crisis to sell fraudulent ‘plague protection kits’.

Southwark Council’s trading standards team took action after a News investigation alleged that the pastor, who heads up The Kingdom Church, was selling infused oil and string for £91 as a prevention and cure for COVID-19 during the height of the pandemic in 2020.

The council says its investigators were told that ‘at least ten people’ had been cured using the product.

At Lavender Hill Magistrates’ Court on Monday, August 16, the 46-year-old pleaded not guilty to a single charge of fraud, and two charges under the Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations between March 23 and 24.

His defence said he had been exercising his ‘freedom to practise his religion’.

The case was sent to trial at Inner London Crown Court, with the bishop next due to appear on September 13.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Just five out of 98 households forced to move out of their Camberwell tower block ‘by the end of the year’ over fire safety fears have secured new homes elsewhere.

The figure was shared in Southwark Council’s latest newsletter to residents in Camberwell’s Marie Curie block, part of Sceaux Gardens Estate and a ‘sister building’ to Lakanal House.

The document, published on August 13, explained: “As of this month, thirteen residents have successfully bid for a new home, which they have viewed and five of them have accepted their new home.”

As the News has reported, fire safety defects - similar to those found and resolved in Lakanal after a fire in 2009 that claimed the lives of six people - were then discovered in Marie Curie through invasive surveys toward the end of last year.

A series of London Fire Brigade callouts had uncovered that smoke was moving between flats, rather than being contained.

The entire building was then put on a ‘waking watch’ and fitted with new fire alarms and heat sensors and, in June, we reported that residents were told that all 87 tenants and eleven leaseholders would have to move out for at least a year due to the extent of work required.

The earliest work is slated to start in January 2022, and earliest it could complete is September 2023. If work

is to start on time the block would need to be mostly empty by the end of 2021.

Months ago the council said it would start the rehousing process immediately, but it appears limited progress has been made so far.

TRA chair David Lewis told the News that some residents, including himself, still did not have access to homesearch, the council’s website for making bids on new homes.

As part of the deal offered to tenants, the local authority has moved all of them into band one but - so far - refused to guarantee everyone will be rehomed

within the borough.

It is also unclear how much flexibility families will be offered when it comes to staying near schools and workplaces, especially given the short supply of suitable homes. The council has, however, pledged to provide ‘like for like’ homes when it comes to size.

In a tenants fact sheet, the council had previously explained: “We will work with residents to look at all options for housing, however we aim to use existing homes in the borough where possible” while leaseholders will be negotiated with on a ‘case by case basis’ with buy back offers

also on the table.

According to the council’s latest newsletter ‘73 tenants are now registered for rehousing’. It is unclear why the remainder are not.

“I did my homesearch application over two months ago and still don’t have access, and there are at least six or seven people telling me the same,” David told the News this week.

“People are panicking a bit and it is unsettling. I don’t want to move. I have been here 35 years. But if I am honest, I’ve had enough now. If you’d told me in 2009, when Lakanal happened, what it would be like since I would have asked to move.

It’s been one renovation after another, and then everything has been made worse

by Grenfell. There are so many projects going on in the block and estate, at one point work was going on for three years almost constantly, it ruins your quality of life. It’s a nightmare.”

Sceaux Gardens is also one of many estates across Southwark to have new housing blocks and garages redeveloped into housing. Around 80 new homes are being added to the estate but not all will be ready until 2024. Twenty-eight that have been completed are now open for bidding with Marie Curie tenants having priority. They are made up of fourteen two-bed flats and six three-beds.

“Hard copies of available homes are now coming through our doors and this week there were two two-bed properties,” David continues. “We aren’t on the top of the list in isolation, we are there with lots and lots of other people who are in severe housing need. We have no idea how long it will take us to be rehoused.”

Stabbing outside the Ivy House pub A man was stabbed outside Nunhead’s The Ivy House pub on Sunday night, writes Katherine Johnston...

Officers were called to Stuart Road at around 8.25pm on August 15.

The victim, believed to be in his 30s, is being treated in hospital. He is said to not have life-threatening injuries.

There have been no arrests so far as officers continue enquiries.

Meanwhile, as of Monday, the cooperative-owned pub remained closed after the incident.

In a short statement, the pub’s managers said: “Our current priority is the wellbeing of our team, therefore, we will remain closed until we all feel comfortable, have digested the incident and decided on next steps together.”

South London trains cut by half and blamed on covid Exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk ‘savage cuts’ that have halved trains travelling through south London have been condemned by a London Assembly member - who has written to Govia Thameslink’s chief executive, urging him to intervene.

Lib Dem assembly member Caroline Pidgeon, who also chairs its transport committee said she was ‘totally unsatisfied’ with the current timetable.

Services from Tulse Hill via East Dulwich to London Bridge are still half-hourly and routinely being cancelled, creating gaps in service of anywhere up to an hour. Routes through Herne Hill are also affected.

“There are also some very large and infrequent gaps in services, including some people now waiting for 45 minutes for some train services, such as people using Streatham station,” she wrote.

“Just this week I received an email from

a constituent who makes this telling comment on the service being provided

by GTR: ‘This has resulted in Tulse Hill, for example, going from eight to four trains per hour to central London. On Thameslink, the situation has left 45 minute gaps in what is supposed to be a fifteen minute service, leading to overcrowding at a time when it is important for people to still be keeping a distance’.”

She believes the operator’s cuts are the worst out of any train company.

As we reported earlier this month, the operator had introduced a heavily reduced timetable at the end of July citing the ‘pingdemic’.

In a statement at the time, the operator had said: “Sadly, like many other industries across the country, coronavirus is affecting our colleagues.

“Unfortunately, following the effect of sixteen months of disruption to the business and a rapid rise in staff now needing to isolate, we have seen such a sharp increase in short notice cancellations that we have taken the

difficult decision to reduce the timetable.

“We know ad-hoc cancellations are hugely frustrating for customers.

Switching to a reduced timetable will help make your train service as reliable as possible under the current circumstances.

“Our colleagues will do everything they can to help you. We may need to make additional changes on the day and we strongly recommend that you check the latest travel information including at weekends at National Rail Enquiries.

“We are very sorry if these changes affect your journey plans. We will increase services as soon as we can.”

Pidgeon, however, has taken the operator to task for laying the blame entirely on the pandemic.

“Well before Covid GTR has faced serious timetable issues due to a shortage of train drivers,” she said.

“I understand that COVID has made training new drivers difficult.

“However, I would suggest your long standing shortage of train drivers and underlying capacity has exposed GTR

to the problems you now face and the impact of COVID-19 should not be entirely blamed on the much reduced train service you are currently providing for train passengers.”

East Dulwich residents have taken to the area’s eponymous online forum to discuss the delays.

One poster commented: “I have been getting the early trains (between 7am 8am) for a couple of weeks, accompanying my husband for daily treatment at Guy’s.

“We have noticed the trains are getting busier and this new timetable will make them more so, but people are still a bit 'precious' about having someone sat next to them and are reserving the adjacent seat with their bags.

“As a couple of 70+ year olds and my husband suffering from cancer, if we need a seat we are more than happy to sit next to another passenger as we are both double vaxxed.”

Another said: “Recently North/ East Dulwich to London Bridge and return trains have been very poor.

“My return trains late 11pm+ have been cancelled but they don't show to be on the southern website or on the departures board, so I end up waiting 20 minutes for a train that never gets a platform number and then just disappears off the board.

Very annoying!”

Should Bermondsey Street remain closed to traffic?

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Walk down Bermondsey Street on any dry evening this summer and you immediately sense a communal atmosphere. People walk on the road, others sit at restaurant tables on the pavement and nearby parks are often full with groups eating, drinking and enjoying themselves.

This atmosphere has resulted, at least in part, from Southwark Council’s recent changes to the street: by temporarily closing a small stretch between Morocco Street and White’s Grounds to motorised traffic, alongside other changes, the council aimed to make the ancient thoroughfare a “quieter, calmer, less congested and polluted place for residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists”.

Officers cited road closures in Seven Dials and outside the British Museum as success stories that “helped to reduce traffic, improve the environment and businesses”.

As well as the road closure, a bike lane was created going against the flow of traffic from Crucifix Lane in the north down to White’s Grounds, pavements were widened to help with social distancing, meaning waiting and loading restrictions were introduced and vehicles longer than ten metres were forbidden from entering the street. Parking spaces were also moved.

To keep some or all of the changes for longer than eighteen months, Southwark has to carry out a full consultation with businesses and residents affected, and a report on how traffic levels have changed is due to be released this month.

The council’s consultation is still ongoing, but the News spoke with local business owners and residents to get a sense of how the closure has affected them and how they would feel about making it permanent.

Sarah Wyndham Lewis and her husband Dale have run Bermondsey Street Bees, a wholesale and retail honey producer on the street, for sixteen years. They are calling for the October changes to be reversed.

“We’ve been here a long time, hopefully contributing to this community,” she said. “We’re one of the independent businesses that has founded this street’s independent fortunes. You could say we’ve helped make Bermondsey Street into this lovely destination that we have become.”

Bermondsey Street Bees is in the middle of the closed section, which makes it difficult for the business to take or dispatch deliveries - which can often involve live bees.

“We do as much as we can by bike or public transport, but when you’re shifting live bees and tons of weight you need a vehicle,” Sarah said. “I understand that we are in a climate crisis but until such time as there is a massive change in society, there is this middle point where you do need to have deliveries and things picked up.

“My husband, who’s 64, and my assistant beekeeper have to trolley huge weights up and down the street. It’s not good for health and safety,” she added.

Sarah said that they would be looking to move away from Bermondsey Street if the closure remains in place.

Dame Zandra Rhodes, the renowned

designer who founded the Fashion Museum on Bermondsey Street and has lived on the street since 1995, called the closure “rather stupid and terribly inconvenient” and said she sympathised with the plight of nearby businesses like Bermondsey Street Bees.

“Although it helps the businesses that are doing street meals, it seriously affects other businesses,” she said.

Zandra added that the closure might be “the death knell” for her museum, which she set up in 2003 and which was forced to launch a fundraiser to survive earlier this year after closing during lockdown.

She wrote a letter to the council earlier this month calling for the closure to be reversed and adding that she was “appalled” by the way business owners and residents had been treated.

And while the new communal atmosphere may be fun for people who are visiting the street, some who live in the immediate area are less pleased with the behaviour they have to put up with.

Chris Hall runs the Giddy Grocer, an independent food shop just to the north of the closed section and also lives on the street. She said the deliveries had

not been such a problem but that the party atmosphere on the street was leading to regular anti-social behaviour.

“There’s a different vibe in the street that none of us signed up to. Things evolve and that’s fair enough and it’s great to have a vibrant street. But unfortunately it’s vibrant in the wrong way. I’m not saying that in a ‘middle class way’. There’s been a big effect on the parks. They seem to be places now where you go and get drunk.

“People go and pee in the bushes, there’s vomit on the paths - God knows what else. There have even been moments where people who are rather worse for wear stumble in trying to use our loo.

“I’m actually not that happy to live here any more, which I never thought I’d say.”

As might be expected, hospitality businesses on the street were more positive about the changes. “Without the cars it’s a completely different experience for people on the street,” said a restaurant manager who declined to be named. “It’s easier, you can see people outside enjoying themselves.”

The manager added that they thought it

would be better if more of the road was closed to motorised traffic.

Perhaps the key factor in whether or not the closure becomes permanent is its effect on traffic and air pollution in the area.

Cllr Damian O’Brien, a Lib Dem councillor for the London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward, said he was sympathetic with local businesses who have had a hard time as a result of the closure, but said that “change always hurts”.

“At the same time I have had feedback from other people who live on the street who think the whole thing is absolutely brilliant,” he added.

But he stressed that any decision should be based on the traffic data that comes out of the closure.

“My position is that I am extremely sympathetic to the trials and tribulations of local businesses and residents,” he said. “At the same time I’m very pro any improvements in air quality and active travel.”

Damian said he suspected the changes might be scrapped after the consultation. He also pointed out that while traffic numbers and air pollution are very likely to be down on Bermondsey Street, there is likely to be an increase on nearby Tanner Street the right turn just before the traffic filter.

“The decision has to be data-driven - and we haven’t seen that data yet.

Southwark Council are going to have to come up with the numbers - they can’t push this through without having some strong data behind it.”

Southwark Council was contacted for comment.

The news comes after Southwark’s Lib Dem councillors called on the council to reconsider plans to reopen Rye Lane in Peckham to motorised traffic after more than a year.

The council plans to allow buses and timed deliveries to access the street, where restrictions have been in place since July 2020. The Lib Dems ‘called in’ the decision - which means they argued that it was unconstitutional.

Southwark’s opposition have heard from campaigners that the council did not hold enough consultation before making its decision.

Some people living on Slippers Place Estate on Southwark Park Road in Bermondsey are concerned about plans to build eighteen new council homes in an eight-storey block near their properties.

Southwark Council has plans to build 11,000 new council homes by 2043 to help the thousands of people stuck on housing waiting lists, and families living in unsuitable, overcrowded accommodation.

But across the borough, estate residents have hit out at plans to build on their car parks and green spaces, often citing a loss of light, mental health concerns and what they see as a lack of proper consultation.

Katie Phillips, who owns her flat in nearby six-storey Matson House, has been running a campaign to inform other residents and to encourage them to comment on the plans. She is worried about the overshadowing effect on her flat and garden. A study submitted as part of the planning application says that “there will… be no adverse impact on neighbouring residents in terms of daylight” and that the plans are “compliant” with sunlight rules.

The council added that they have tried to reduce the impact of the new development on neighbouring properties, including insetting balconies and placing them on the corner of the building furthest away from neighbouring blocks.

But Ms Phillips, who works in a south London hospital, said: “It’s making me ill, it’s going to make my life an absolute misery. I don’t feel supported, and I’ve been working all the way through lockdown as a frontline key worker. It’s an absolute nightmare. There have been nights that I’ve not been able to sleep. It’s had such an impact.”

As of May this year there had been two public consultation schemes across two and a half years. One of these was an inperson public meeting in August 2018.

The second was an online exhibition in February. Council officers also held four meetings with a group of residents and

newsletters were sent out to residents.

But Ms Phillips, who is a member of this group, does not feel the consultations were effective. “People don’t even know it’s going on, people who don’t have internet or don’t use it very often- their voices are totally lost.” The council said they installed a post-box on the estate to help residents without internet access provide feedback.

In several cases, including Slippers Place, the people leading campaigns against infill on their estate have been leaseholders - meaning they could have more to lose from the new building going ahead than neighbours who are council tenants. Ms Phillips and others have insisted their opposition is not linked to the value of their homes possibly going down as a result of the new buildings.

“I never even thought about the impact of the value on my property - it didn’t even cross my mind,” she said. “I understand the need for housing is great, I don’t dispute that whatsoever. I just don’t think it should be to the detriment of existing residents.”

An application for planning permission was submitted in May and the planning committee is expected to make a decision in September.

Ms Phillips linked her opposition to the plans to other groups in Southwark who have protested infill projects on their estates.

“I’m just one of many, many voices.

It’s been really positive in a way, going to meetings of these different local groups. I think the council needs to stop everything, review everything across the borough and then decide how to go forward.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council Homes and homelessness, said: “On Slippers Estate, we’re building 18 much-needed new council homes including one ground-floor flat with a parking space suitable for wheelchair users. Over half the homes are familysized and our local lettings policy means that at least fifty percent of the new homes here would be offered to tenants in housing need already living in the area.

“Development of the site will include green landscaping and new trees to create an attractive route from neighbouring Southwark Park down Stalham Street through to the estate. New homes also will be connected to the District Heat Network, significantly reducing carbon emissions and lowering local residents’ energy bills.”

Walworth Estate to hold demonstration to save veg patch and play area from infilling plans

Eight new homes are slated for the Walworth housing estate in Dawes Street, all for social rent, with planning permission due to be submitted this autumn and construction work starting no earlier than late 2022.

The council’s website and documents say the homes would be built on a site which currently has ‘a small garage block’. Images show the existing block is in an area within a larger courtyard and greenspace including a play area.

A group of residents campaigning under the ‘Save Kingston Estate’ banner have now publicly joined the anti-infill movement sweeping the borough, saying the new housing would take over children’s play space and a vegetable patch.

At the time of going to press, they were due to hold a demonstration at the estate today from 7pm (Thursday, August 19), on the corner of East Street and Dawes Street.

In a tweet promoting the demonstration, the campaigners said: “Southwark Council think a building hammered in our little piece of green where our children play and we grow our veg is more important than our wellbeing. Thanks, but no.

We need trees, sun and space.”

Jumaima was invited to the event at Kensington Palace to mark the launch of the new dedicated centre and to discuss early childhood development. Jumaima, 23, had previously met the duchess in 2019 when she visited the FNP team at Sunshine House in Peckham.

The Family Nurse Partnership is delivered by Evelina London community services in Southwark.

The programme supports young mums to have a healthy pregnancy, and improve their child’s health and

development. Parents are partnered with a specially trained family nurse who visits them regularly from early pregnancy until the child is up to two years old.

The new Royal Foundation Centre for Early Childhood highlights awareness of the impact a child’s earliest years has on their whole life and on society.

When aged 19, Jumaima became pregnant with her son and started working with family nurse Cecilia, from the FNP programme. Cecilia helped Jumaima find suitable housing and supported her throughout the whole process.

Jumaima said: “The home visits definitely made a difference to how I am a mum, and also keeping that

same family nurse was a great help because it helps with stability. It made me more comfortable to share and be more open, and you know you can work through questions with them.”

On her meeting with The Duchess of Cambridge, Jumaima said: “We spoke about how much parents need help as well as kids, because you can only be a good parent if you're also looking after yourself.”

Family nurse, Cecilia Welsh, said: “We’re delighted that Jumaima was invited to Kensington Palace to meet with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Jumaima has first-hand experience about what support young mums need and how to give little ones the very best start in life.”

e-scooter rider dies in mysterious circumstances after fall Exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are investigating the mysterious death of a man who fell off his e-scooter in Bermondsey this summer.

The man came off the scooter on Long Lane on June 19 and broke his leg.

He told officers that his rear wheel had been hit - but police said it is not clear if there was a collision with a car.

An ambulance crew took him to hospital, where he was later

discharged.

But police were told that he died just over three weeks later. Officers from a specialist police unit are looking into his death.

It is not clear that the man's death is connected to the incident, although Transport for London have recorded the tragic incident as a 'road fatality' in their provisional statistics.

It is also unclear how the man died.

It is possible for a broken bone to lead to a blood clot, which can be fatal - although no evidence has been provided to the News to suggest this happened in this case.

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: "Police were called on Saturday, 19 June to a report of an e-scooter rider injured while on Long Lane, Southwark.

"Officers spoke to the victim who reported his rear wheel had been hit which caused him to fall off the e-scooter. The man suffered a broken leg and was taken to hospital and later discharged.

"On Monday, 12 July officers were informed the man had died. The Met’s Serious Collision’s Investigation Unit are investigating. No arrests have been made.

"A file is now being prepared for the coroner."

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at 12.53pm on 19 June to reports of a collision involving an electric scooter and a car on Long Lane, SE1. We sent an ambulance crew, who treated a man at the scene and took him to a hospital."

This is the latest in a series of tragic events in south London connected to people using e-scooters.

Last month, a three-year-old child suffered life-changing injuries in Myatt's Fields Park after being 'hit by an unidentified e-scooter rider'.

Previously a man was left unconscious in the road in Rotherhithe after being allegedly knocked out by an e-scooter illegally riding on the pavement.

Elsewhere a teenager was killed in Bromley after he was 'hit by a car' while riding an e-scooter on July 18.

It is illegal to ride privately owned e-scooters on public land but some boroughs – including Southwark – are now part of a hire trial where those hired from central London can be ridden through on roads, cycle lanes and cycle paths but not pavements. The trial was announced by TfL earlier this summer.

restaurant stripped of licence by the Council after ‘possible machete attack’

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A restaurant near Elephant and Castle station has had its licence to serve alcohol removed after two bloody incidents including an attempted ‘cover up’ of a possible machete attack in July.

The Met asked Southwark Council to strip the Ecuadorean restaurant Rincon Costeno of its licence after a man - who had previously been barred - was found with “significant head injuries and a possible machete wound to his back” on July 10.

Officers said in their submission to the licensing sub-committee that they “found a significant amount of blood, tables and chairs turned over and smashed glass all over the floor.”

“No calls were made to the emergency services from the premises or staff at the premises.” The victim of the horrific attack was uncooperative, police added - and wanted the whole matter to be dropped.

Officers said in their report to the council: “The CCTV shows between 6 and 8 persons inside the venue sat at a table drinking what appears to be bottles of beer. One view shows the victim bending down behind the bar area, the suspect comes up from behind the victim and smashes a glass bottle across the back of the victim’s head.

A fight then starts between the two males. The other people inside then attempt to break up the fight.” The victim was later treated by an ambulance crew and taken to hospital.

Officers added in the report: “From the details contained in the crime report... the victim was treated for a significant head injury and what is described by the [London ambulance service] as a machete wound to his back.”

The July 2021 attack came three years after the same victim was banned from Rincon Costeno after a fight outside, in Eagle Yard The ban was one of the conditions for the restaurant keeping its alcohol licence. The other condition was that managers had to put approved bouncers on the doors on Friday and Saturdays after midnight. Police said it was not clear if there were bouncers in the 2021 incident.

Officers said of the second incident: “By allowing [the victim] into the licensed premises they have breached the conditions of the premises licence, as a result a serious crime was committed inside the premises. No calls to the emergency services were received from the premises or staff.

“On attending the venue it was found to be locked and secured with a crime scene unattended inside. I am of the opinion that this was a deliberate act from those at the premises to cover up the fact a serious crime had occurred on their licensed premises.”

The council’s principal licensing officer said in a memo on July 27: “This total lack of understanding of what is required to manage a licensed premises and a disregard for any conditions imposed on the premises licence to promote the licensing objectives leaves me no alternative other than to recommend that the premises licence is revoked.”

Southwark’s licencing committee decided to strip Rincon Costeno of its licence at a meeting on August 11 this year after the police submission and Ms Tear’s report.

The licence holder’s lawyer asked for the licence to be suspended rather than fully revoked. He told the committee: “It’s accepted that the conditions were breached because of what happened. The point... is that the premises were not open and were in fact closed and he was expecting people to leave.”

King's nurse up for top award after 'going above and beyond' for young autistic patient

A junior nurse at King's College Hospital has been nominated for a national award for her outstanding care for a teenage patient in severe physical and mental pain.

Orna Carey helped look after seventeen-year-old Ellis Kottas, who was bed-bound at King's for two and a half months with spinal injuries she suffered while at a mental health unit.

Ellis, who has autism, naturally struggled to come to terms with the injuries and the pain she was in - but Orna's care and attention, even after her twelve-hour shifts had ended, were a great help, she said.

“I was an inpatient for my physical injuries at King’s for a whole year battling with pain and having surgeries,” Ellis recalls.

“I was bed-bound for months. The year I spent in hospital was not easy.

I struggled greatly both mentally and physically. But Orna Carey’s dedication and kindness has been so

important. It was the boost I needed to keep me going on my journey.”

Now Ellis has nominated Orna for the Patient's Choice prize at the Royal College of Nursing's awards. Orna is one of six nurses nominated.

“It started off just being chats but Orna was always so busy that it was hard for her to find the time, so she would stay behind after her 12-hour shift to talk to me,” says Ellis. “Then she started bringing in sweets, or making time to plait my hair. I always looked forward to her next shift.”

When Ellis was finally going to leave the ward, she asked to be woken up so she could say goodbye to Orna, but she ended up oversleeping. She was very upset. “It got to 5pm and suddenly Orna burst into my room in her own clothes, hair down, and with a Percy Pig toy and sweets.

“She had remembered I was leaving and called the ward to see if I was still there and rushed in. We had our last chat and said goodbye and I left

with my little Percy Pig, which I called Orna.”

Ellis has kept the toy with her ever since for added support. “That Percy Pig was by my side through difficult meetings, physio sessions and two kidney infections.

“Orna never had to be that kind or go the extra mile for me, but she did – and it made all the difference.

When I bumped into her four months later, I was so happy and excited even though the appointment I had was to discuss my next surgery, a day which wasn’t set to be particularly great.”

After having a tough time in mental health services, Ellis' trust in the NHS was also restored, which both her parents and Orna believe has been of vital importance to her progress and recovery.

“She was the first person I felt able to open up to and trust again,” says Ellis. “We could talk about my worries or about life outside the four walls of the ward. She made me feel wanted and that I deserved the help, which I had always found hard to believe.

‘I have autism, so leaving the ward was a difficult change for me. Orna’s kindness on my last day made that transition much smoother. And the physical reminder of the toy meant so much to me. It made me able to recall her values, which guided me through the rest of my recovery in rehab.

“She wasn’t just an exceptional nurse to me but a great nurse and leader. Without her, I wouldn’t be where I am today.”

world’s first trial to cure erectile dysfunction for prostate cancer patients

Guy's launches trial to cure erectile dysfunction among prostate cancer patients

Guy's Hospital has started a worldfirst medical trial to treat men who struggle to get an erection after having prostate cancer.

Between 70 and 80 per cent of men suffer from erectile dysfunction after having surgery for prostate cancer, making it the most common side-effect of the disease. Guy's is testing to see if sending acoustic shockwaves at the affected areas could regenerate blood vessels and nerves, possibly making it easier to gain an erection.

Similar treatment has worked on kidney stones and joint disorders.

Mr Tet Yap, consultant andrological surgeon and trial lead, said: “We’re delighted to be able to offer this potentially life-changing treatment to patients with prostate cancer. Most patients who are in remission will lose their sexual function through nerve damage following surgery.

“This new painless therapy has the potential to restore their erectile function by regenerating new blood vessels and nerves, hopefully helping patients to return to leading a normal healthy life.”

As part of the trial, low-energy shockwaves are sent at a targeted area using a specialist probe for around ten or fifteen minutes. Each patient will receive treatment through a randomised trial for ten sessions, once a week.

exploring south London's black music spaces

A new exhibition at the Horniman Museum celebrates south London’s black music spaces.

Opening on July 30 this year and curated by Adem Holness, Dance Can’t Nice - which takes its name from a Frankie Paul & Sugar Minott song - looks at key players in the British Bashment, Garage, Lovers Rock, Grime, Gospel, Jazz and Soul scenes, and the places were the genres flourished including south London bedrooms, barber shops, churches and living rooms.

The exhibition also looks at how policing has made it harder for venues to put on music events, including the role of the Met’s risk assessment form 696, and how this impacted on underground music culture during the 2000s.

Artist Naeem Davis and Lewishambased D/deaf rapper SignKid, who showcases the British Sign Language versions of key slang words and phrases from Black British music culture, have also been involved with creating the display.

Naeem Davis said: “I want to evoke a sense of nostalgia and create value for the forgotten.

“I want to honour our spaces.

As the ownership of black music venues fades and we emerge from the global pandemic, our community and its origins have never been more

important.

“Our culture thrives in the underground. Our music is a blessing and privilege to those outside our community who have been granted access.”

Adem Holness, music curator at the Horniman said: ‘I want this exhibition to really interrogate the relationship between black live music and public space.

“I’m hoping it prompts conversation and discussion about where black British music belongs.

“In some ways it’s about acknowledging the way in which black music has been pushed out of public space, but it’s also about honouring where it has managed to thrive.

“By working with Naeem to reimagine sacred black music and cultural spaces, I want to pull back the curtain on music genres we all love.”

The exhibition is free but booking is required. It runs until October 24, 2021 in the museum’s contemporary arts space The Studio.

blood donor thanked for 'saving life' of woman with cystic fibrosis A young Southwark man has been thanked by a woman with a cystic fibrosis disorder for saving lives with his regular blood plasma donations.

Simone Simon's condition means that her lungs regularly fill with mucus, leaving her at risk of infection. She relies on people donating plasma to give her body the antibodies it needs to fight the infections.

Albert Mensah, 24, a final-year medical student from Southwark, has donated blood plasma nineteen times now.

“People like Albert mean the world to me," Simone said. "It’s really opened my eyes to understand how people are so willing to give up their time and help save my life.”

Albert replied: “It’s so good to see you. That’s so wonderful to hear.

Honestly, that is amazing.

“I have always said to friends who ask me why I do this, If I can just do this for an hour max, imagine how

much time that will give somebody else.”

During the coronavirus pandemic Simone was hospitalised, after going fourteen weeks without treatment because of her usual hospital where she has transfusions going into lockdown.

Plasma donation takes around an hour. The donor’s blood is gradually run through a machine which separates out the plasma, before returning the blood back into the donor.

Plasma is the liquid that makes up most of your blood.? It carries your antibodies around you to fight pathogens. The antibodies in donated plasma are separated out and concentrated into medicines.

Plasma is being collected at eleven centres around the country, after decades-long restrictions put in place in the wake of the CreutzfeldJakob disease outbreak were lifted this year. the NHS is now calling for more than 1,000 donations a week.

funds given out to stage local events

Funding has been given a series of free outdoor events across Southwark throughout the rest of 2021 and early 2022.

Sixty thousand was up for grabs through the new Cultural Celebrations Fund, with individual events receiving a maximum of £10,000 each.

A total of 52 applications were received after a call out for applications in June, with around a dozen eventually selected which focus on ‘community cohesion’.

Among the winners are W.E.L.L. Being SE15, an event aimed at young people aged 16-22, founded by Daniel Palmer and Shelene Byer, who said: “ The pandemic put a huge delay on the momentum gained from our first event that took place in November 2019.

“It also affected our access to other resources which would have enabled us to transform our foundation into a centralised resource for access to local wellbeing services.

“This fund is well aligned with reaffirming our mission in supporting and promoting entrepreneurship among the youth.

“It also provides us with a great

opportunity to continue enhancing and introducing the concept of holistic wellbeing amongst the next generation in an openly interactive way that enables access to all within the borough and surrounding areas.”

Other events to receive funding include the two day Mercado Latino UK festival, Rotherhithe Festival, Fiya House Hip Hop Weekender, Kingswood Community Carnival, Peckham Festival, and Walworth Winterland.

Councillor Alice Macdonald, cabinet member for equalities, neighbourhoods and leisure, said: “The vibrancy, diversity and energy of Southwark is what attracts many people to the area, and is what residents and Londoners love so much about it.

“It’s exciting to see the list of events planned, including fairs, food, dance and theatre which celebrate our diverse cultures from all corners of the globe.

“I can’t wait to go to them, and I’m sure many others will take great pleasure in attending. Congratulations to all the successful organisers.

t has been amazing to get back out and about in the community, doing door to door mobile advice sessions and attending some fantastic events over the last few weeks after the lost, lockdown year.

I joined the Mason Foundation’s first ever ‘Family Mile Summer Extravaganza’ in Burgess Park. It was a great event, and my five-year-old daughter Esme enjoyed the unicorn face painting! The charity aims to support families, to get more active and healthier, together. To register for activities please visit: https:// tinyurl.com/swk-fam-mile It was also brilliant to attend the Living Bankside ‘Great Get Together’ in Flat Iron Square. ‘Get Togethers’ take place all over the country in memory of my murdered friend and colleague Jo Cox, inspired by her words “We have more in common than that which divides us”. It was cancelled last year, but was as positive as ever this summer with Jo’s sister Kim Leadbeater attending as the new MP for Batley and Spen.

I pitched my red gazebo up at the Rotherhithe Festival to run an outdoor advice surgery right amongst the fun, music and occasional downpour. It was

also great to put a shift in for the Mayor of Southwark's Common Good Trust on their charity stall. The festival is always positive and it was brilliant to catch up with so many other wonderful local organisations like Time and Talents, the Southwark Pensioners’ Centre, and the new Rotherhithe Roosters boxing club.

The festival is just one of the summer events backed by Southwark Council, including a brilliant, free programme for children in partnership with great local organisations. England hero Jadon Sancho came from the same area, so I hope the scheme helps train a future star!

I am hugely proud to represent such a strong, community-spirited area. It stands in contrast to the government’s latest grubby shenanigans. Ministers are cutting £1.2 million from Southwark schools, freezing police pay, cutting Universal Credit by £20 a week, and

giving nurses a clap for the cameras but a real-terms pay cut. Yet they found £250 million for a ministerial yacht and £100,000 for art to adorn Downing Street’s recently redecorated walls. If only the government shared Southwark’s principles; the whole country would be better off!

When the UK helped topple the Taliban and the extremists they shielded as part of an international operation, the whole world celebrated.

With the Taliban back in charge today the world shudders and awaits their latest atrocities against women in Afghanistan and attacks beyond their borders. That our prime minister and foreign secretary were on holiday as events unfolded and ignored warnings is unforgivable given the risks to UK personnel and our allies who’ve sacrificed everything in the hope of a stable, democratic country which has now been demolished so abruptly. The Tories’ talk about ‘Global Britain’ but that has been shown for the empty slogan it truly is, with cuts to our army and international aid. Our reach and partnerships seem to be shrinking before our eyes and, after already being contacted by three local people, I’m fearful for anyone whose family members are trapped in this chaos.

Visionary councillors like Jessie Burgess saw that people need space for play, sport, fresh air and rest. Green space is more essential in cities than ever: grass and trees soak up floodwater and cool the air in heatwaves.

Labour councillors obsessed by building seem to ignore the empty homes across the borough. Data from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government shows that one in every 24 homes in Southwark was empty in 2020, up an astonishing 600 per cent from 2019. With thousands of council homes awaiting demolition on the Aylesbury Estate, luxury ‘investment’ properties, second homes and thousands of flats listed on Airbnb, the number of homes that have been empty long term in Southwark doubled last year.

Next door, the council still plans to demolish Peckham Arch: a covered public square, sheltering the market and diverse cultural and social

activities. The first reason given on the council website is that demolition will ‘permit development’. And having ignored calls to establish Sumner Road as a proper alternative cycle route to relieve the busy Surrey Canal path, they now give the ‘problematic’ cycle route as an excuse to demolish this landmark.

On Rye Lane, the council wants to take away road space that’s currently given over to people walking and using wheelchairs, bikes and buggies.

These ‘social distancing measures’ have brought new life, letting people wander freely between shops, lifting the tension caused by crowded pavements. Given the chance, I’d add an electric shuttle service between the station and bus stops for anyone who finds walking difficult, or just to help with heavy shopping. But the council wants to take us back to 2018.

This is a snapshot of council plans for just one neighbourhood of Southwark, in the week we were warned to take emergency action. Do they reflect your hopes for the future?

Back to normal: Train shortage blamed on Covid, but we all remember it was always bad

N

ew self-isolation rules came into force this week. From Monday onwards, fully vaccinated people no longer have to self-isolate if they come into close contact with a COVID-19 case, raising hopes that the ‘pingdemic’, as well as the pandemic, is drawing to a close.

But now there is a new barrier stopping people from returning to their offices and spending their cash in central London - our creaking transport system. While some people will still be avoiding the tube and buses, mindful of being in crowded places, others are happy to wear a mask and get back to commuting. But what about longer distance passengers? And those who live off the tube map and in the south of the borough, reliant on trains that were too often delayed, late and overcrowded even before social distancing?

This week we report that Govia Thameslink Railway services have implemented ‘savage cuts’, with a reduced timetable, delays and cancellations leaving some places with just one train an hour.

How is this a return to normal?

Who will brave going back to their office five days a week if they are sat at East Dulwich Station waiting 45 minutes for a train that doesn’t arrive?

Train operators say they have a shortage of staff and drivers due to COVID-19. The latest timetable was introduced in July. We are now in mid-August. If services can’t return to normal in the summer months, what hope is there come autumn when they have norovirus, flu season, potential further winter waves of COVID-19, and bad weather to contend with?

Caroline Pidgeon is right to take the operator to task for laying the blame entirely on the pandemic.

The Lib Dem assembly member, who also chairs its transport committee, rightly points out that before Covid GTR has faced serious timetable issues due to a shortage of train drivers. The pandemic and pingdemic have affected all businesses and services, but this is another example of either playing the blame game or of a large cumbersome organisation failing to be flexible enough to deal with the problem. One thing’s for sure - the commuters in the south of the borough do remember the situation pre March 2020 when delays were ever present. So fewer excuses and get on with training and recruiting more drivers.

GCSE results are Up across the borough

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An early analysis of this year’s GCSE results in Southwark shows improvements across all areas compared with last year.

Southwark Council told the News that despite the disruption during the pandemic, the key measure attainment eight - which shows achievement across eight qualifications including English and maths - has gone up by 5.5 from 53.7 points in 2020 to 59.2 points this year.

The percentage of students achieving a standard pass this year is at 84.2 per cent, up 8.8 percentage points from 75.4 per cent in 2020.

Meanwhile, 64.9 per cent achieved a strong pass (up 11.5 percentage points from 2020) in both English and mathematics.

Results for the English Baccalaureate also show improvements, with 55.4 per cent of pupils securing a standard pass (up 7.9 percentage points to 47.5 per cent in 2020) and 42.9 per cent of pupils achieving a strong pass (up 11.3 percentage points to 31.6 per cent in 2020) After the cancellation of exams, this is the second successive year grades have been awarded to students by teachers

based on their assessment of mock exams, homework, coursework or miniexams, another form of test.

Two pupils achieve 21 grade 9s

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk St Thomas the Apostle in Nunhead is celebrated a fantastic set of GCSE results, with a 97 per cent pass rate.

Almost half year eleven achieved grades 9-7 in the face of huge disruption caused by COVID-19.

As well as working from home for prolonged periods during the national lockdowns, many students have also had to self-isolate at various points and had extremely limited periods of time to complete the practical elements of their studies.

In some cases students learnt in school while teachers taught from home where they had to self isolate.

This year, the ‘outstanding’ rated school has seen 99 per cent of students achieve five or more passes at GCSE. Eighty-seven per cent achieved grades 9-4 in English and maths and 65 per cent achieved a strong pass(grades 9-5) English and maths. The average grade awarded to the cohort is a 6.

One hundred per cent pass rates were achieved in art; business studies; computer science; drama;

Star performers Ezekiel and Santiago economics; music and triple science, while in both English and maths, a quarter of students achieved top grades of 8 or 9.

Top performers include Santiago Benitez Campoverde and Ezekiel Oyede who achieved a clean sweep of top grades; sharing 21 grade 9s between them.

Both students have now enrolled on courses to study on the prestigious Oxbridge programme at STAC sixth form in September, to help prepare them for applying to top universities as they study their A Levels.

Ezekiel said: “I was completely shocked with my results, I knew I had put in a lot of work but for my results to turn out the way they did, I am over the moon.”

Santiago commented: “I am truly happy with my results, and I am

grateful to my teachers, who taught me everything I needed in order to achieve this. Thank you. I’m looking forward to coming to STAC 6th form next year!’

“Despite the disruption to their studies, I am immensely proud of the hard work and dedication of the students,” said headteacher Eamon Connolly.

“Our Year 11 cohort have been supported by an outstanding team of teachers and, of course, their families; and have achieved everything we knew they were capable of.

“I am delighted that so many of our year eleven students will be continuing at sixth form in September, and I am confident that all students are in an excellent position to pursue their chosen path next year.”

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Sacred Heart Catholic Secondary School’s headteacher has praised his pupils’ success after ‘rigorous assessments’ in an ‘extremely challenging’ academic year.

Eighty-seven per cent of year eleven pupils at the Camberwell school have achieved at least five standard GCSE passes or above, including in English and maths.

Seventy-two per cent achieved a grade 5 and above in English and maths and 67 per cent of pupils gained the EBACC as well as a grade five or above in English and maths.

Headteacher Mr Serge Cefai commented: “Sacred Heart school is well used to achieving some of the best GCSE results in the country and although the circumstances surrounding this year’s grades have been extremely challenging for pupils and staff I am delighted that our pupils have once again worked hard and excelled. ”As well as other assessment criteria we utilised, we ensured that all year eleven pupils sat full final exams in

all their subjects which were externally invigilated and thoroughly moderated in order to ensure the fairest and most accurate grades.

“I am very proud of how hard my staff worked to administer these exams, and especially proud of how determined, ambitious and focused our pupils have been against the context of the Pandemic.

“Our pupils have not only excelled in these exams, but by sitting rigorous assessments we have ensured that they are well prepared for the next stage in their educational journeys.”

In a statement published last Thursday, the school said that despite the challenges of lockdown learning this year’s GCSE cohort have done ‘exceptionally well’ and achieved ‘fantastic results’.

Students singled out for particular praise include Rianna Small-Lawrence who took home a grade 9 and a grade 8 in combined science, a grade 9 in religious studies; double 8s in English language and literature, a 7 in maths, a 7 in food technology and a 6 in French.

She will now go on to study for her A Levels and aspires to study social sciences at university to enable her to pursue a career in mental health or social sciences.

Principal Claudette Bergin said: “Rianna really is a phenomenal student who has shown true resilience

and determination.

“We admire her strength to see the rainbows past the storm. She has worked so hard and deserves these amazing results. Her commitment to doing well in her exams has been powerful beyond belief.”

She also highlighted the success of student Kymani Skyers has worked incredibly hard to juggle his football career for Premier League Crystal Palace’s youth team with his schoolwork, achieving both with ‘real flair’. Biology is his favourite academic subject. He hopes it could help his career - either as a footballer or physiotherapist. He achieved five grade 9s, two grade 8s and one grade 7.

“I see this as the best of both worlds,” he said.

“Two possible careers in fields that I love, and these complement each other very well.”

Ms Bergin added: “We are so proud of all our year eleven today. They have achieved some amazing results in a very challenging year.

“We wish them every success as they progress into the next stages of their education. Well done all!”

Pupils Kaziwa and Habibah attained a crop of 7-9 grades despite working in a different time zone.

Another fantastic performance came from Gayatri Subhash, who joined the school at the beginning of year eleven from abroad bagged nine GCSEs at grade 8 and above, while Maryam Hassan achieved eleven

GCSEs at grade 8 and above.

Carrie Senior, Principal of Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich, said: “Huge congratulations to our GCSE class of 2021 and to our wonderful parents, carers and teachers who have supported the girls through such a tumultuous two years.

“We are delighted that their results reflect their hard work and determination to succeed, through two lockdowns, multiple periods for some of isolating at home and huge adjustments to how they learn. A thank you also to their teachers, teaching assistants and our support staff, who helped our girls carry on learning.”

Harris Boys’ Academy East Dulwich’s principal says he is looking forward to seeing as many of his year eleven students at the sixth form next term after they achieved a fantastic set of results.

“We are delighted for our Year 11 today. After a tumultuous year, they have all shown real commitment and resilience to achieve these results and should be proud of what they’ve achieved,” Peter Groves said.

Individual success stories he highlighted included Abid Ahmed, who achieved six 9s, two 8s and two distinction*; Anson Nguyen Dac, who has achieved seven 9s, two 8’ and two distinction*, and Syed Ahmed, who achieved five

9s, four 8s and one distinction*.

He also wanted to share the achievements of Cristobal Cortes Henao and Justin PonceLascano.

Cristobal received two distinctions, one 9, two 6s, four 5s and one 4. Justin received a 5 in maths and a 4 in English literature and language as well as a pass in all his other subjects.

Both had joined the academy in year nine and at the time spoke little English but their hard work has paid off with impressive results.

Mr Groves added: “Congratulations to Abid, Anson and Syed – not only for their excellent grades today but also for the impressive way in which all three of them have conducted themselves during their time at the academy.

“Their results are well deserved, and we look forward to seeing what the future holds for them.”

Stellar achievers at Alleyn’s

“I am delighted for our Year 11 pupils, who have achieved

impressive results that are incredibly well-deserved,” Jane Lunnon told the News.

Alongside stellar academic achievements, GCSE students from the school have also won the Trinity College London Talent Class of 2020, were shortlisted for the Triumph Design Awards, and represented the UK in Mathematics Olympiads.

First set of results for the new Charter School in East Dulwich

The school’s founding cohort of 118 pupils have achieved fantastic results, especially after the challenges posed by COVID-19.

Overall, 48 per cent of all GCSE grades achieved by year elevens were 7-9, and 80 per cent were grade 5 or above.

Headteacher Alex Crossman, who is leaving the school at the end of this month to take up a new position, commented: “We have achieved what we set out to when we opened the school, which

was to provide a high quality, non-selective state secondary education provision in our part of South East London.”

Pupils highlighted for ‘exceptional progress’ over the last five years include: Jason-Derrecce Casar, Maisie Davies; Sophia Dickenson; Whitney Emakpose; Rasheedat Gbajabiamila; Olivia Oduro; Madeline Pritchard; Nile Simpson and Jayden Singh.

Outstanding individual performances of note included the achievements of Dexter Godfrey; Callum Muffett; Nancy Perry; Katie Sanders; Pia Stern; Isobel Tucker and Rosamund Turner each achieved eight or more GCSEs at grade 9.

The school says both its GCSE and BTECs were awarded via internal tests sat in exam conditions, homework and coursework.

High achievers include Antonia Ngai; Isabella Breen; Rose Roberts; Lizzie Colley; Elena Galezia; Nicholas Mitchiner; Archie Harper; Evie Watson; Petra Whelan; Daisy Berrisford Hawkes; Elissa Saygin; Ben Snowdon and Oscar Stott all of who gained at least eight GCSEs at grade 9.

Alys Forman Wilshaw gained 10 GCSEs, including three at grade 9, whilst her brother Harry gained nine GCSEs, also with three grade 9s.

Barnaby Steed gained ten GCSEs, seven of which were grade 9s, including in English, maths, science, and art.

Favour Garuba gained nine GCSEs, six of which were grade 9, including history, English and sociology.

Malachi and Micah Aguma gained nine GCSEs each, both achieving grade 9s in triple science and a grade 8 and 9 respectively in maths.

Olivia Morgan-Murray gained nine GCSEs including grade 9’s in English and sociology.

Assad Amin gained nine GCSEs, five at grade 9, including triple science, maths and history.

Isabella Sutcliffe gained ten GCSEs, four at Grade 9, including triple science.

Younes Lekhaili gained eight GCSEs and a BTEC, including four at grade 9 in maths and triple science.

The Charter School North Dulwich followed a rigorous process for both GCSEs and BTECs to determine students’ grades.

Notre Dame’s top marks

Notre Dame Roman Catholic Girls’ School’s leaders say they are ‘immensely proud’ of its GCSE students.

The top three academic achievers at the St George’s Road secondary are Jane Mills who gained nine grade 9s and 1 grade 7; Emmanuella Otukpe who received six grade 9s and four grade 8s; and Lani Iriajen who gained three grade 9s and seven grade 8s.

After exams were cancelled, the grades were awarded by teacher assessments against a national standard, and approved and awarded by exam boards.

Sister Anne Marie Niblock said: “We are immensely proud of all the work and achievements of our students, especially after such a difficult and disrupted year.

“Our teachers have worked tirelessly to ensure students are all able to progress onto further education and study, and we look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future.”

Walworth’s UAE head hails the mental strength of his students in two national lockdowns

John Taylor said: “We have been blown away by the tenacity and resilience of our year 11 students, who managed to navigate two national lockdowns and various periods of isolating at home with remote learning during their GCSE studies.

“Along with our staff they had to adapt to online

learning and dealing with all the uncertainty and change we have encountered in the last eighteen months.

“Even with all this additional challenge they have been successful and we are incredibly proud of all their achievements. We wish them all the very best in their future studies.”

Every pupil was given a laptop during home learning and beyond, and received daily contact with teachers.

Among those celebrating today is Sara, who gained an impressive ten grade 9s in English literature; English language; maths; history; biology; chemistry; physics; Mandarin; Art and RE. Her teachers described her as “a fantastic student, a credit to the EGA community, and an excellent role model for younger students.

“The secret to her success was simple: she worked at least as hard as anyone from the day she arrived in year seven.”

Sara, who is currently on holiday abroad, said: “Being prepared and knowing how the exam is structured is key. I researched and analysed and then completed as many past papers as I could.”

Fela, pictured with principal Tim Dainty, was awarded three grade 9s, four grade 8s and three grade 7s. She is said to be an ‘exceptional scientist’ who aims to become a physiotherapist. Outside academia she is also a talented sportswoman.

“I massively enjoyed my time at EGA,” she said.

“You need to take yourself and your time at school seriously. During year eleven I revised for at least one and a half hours a day. Even if you believe that you know everything, you still need to keep studying and revising. You must work hard to

achieve your goals as you are never finished learning. Keep calm in those moments when you think you are struggling and do not be afraid to ask the staff for support. They are here to help you achieve your best and so will always be there for you.”

Hajar, for whom English is a second language, achieved six grade 9s and four grade 8s and has worked extremely hard.

In year ten, she took on the role of student council lead to continue her personal development and inspire others to succeed.

“The experience was one that I found difficult at first,” she said. “I realised very quickly that it’s never too late to make the changes and adjustments necessary to achieve your goals.

Once you understand the core knowledge needed in the subjects you are studying, you are well on the road to being successful as knowledge is the building block to a brighter future. Listen and be open to learning in new ways.”

Leo netted two grade 9s, six grade 8s and three grade 7s and is described as having great selfdiscipline and focus, while encouraging other students and also excelling in athletics, longdistance running and rugby.

Jayden was awarded six grades 9s, two 8s, one 7 and one 6 and has been a ‘superb student’.

“Success is set by having a clear goal at the start of your GCSE journey,” he advised.

“If you do not forget what you want in life, no struggle will ever be too much. Every day you should reflect on what you learnt in school and how to improve. Keep pushing and working hard with the end goal in mind.”

Ninety per cent of its students attained a good or better pass in both English and maths, and half the cohort secured a strong pass in the English Baccalaureate.

These achievements were described as ‘highly praiseworthy’ by head teacher Steve Morrison.

Top performers include India Van Der Waal, Luella Sear and Charlotte Yaxley who gained eighteen grade 9s, five grade 8s and six grade 7s

between them.

Fabiana Monteiro, from Camberwell, who achieved six 9s, three 8s and a 7 told of how she overcame her nerves and a lack of confidence.

“My journey through the GCSEs was full of anxiety and self-confidence issues. The uncertainties around the exams or grades made is nerve wracking for me. Most of us put our self-worth in our grades, but

“I am very passionate about science.

I will study A levels at Globe and will do biology, chemistry and maths. I think I am so lucky because we always had the best science teachers at Globe. ‘Remarkable maturity’

Staff at St Michael’s Catholic College in Bermondsey have congratulated students on their GCSE results and thanked their families for their support during the pandemic.

Three students at City of London Academy Southwark in Bermondsey achieved top grades in every GCSE this year.

Among the students with the best results were Isabel Biakpara, Dylan Agyemang and Juliana Cano, whose exceptional performances meant they are eligible for places on the St Michael’s sixth form honours and Oxbridge pathway, principal Felicity Corcoran said.

Ms Corcoran added: “Every student approached the assessments that the college used to determine their grades with resilience and determination and it has been a privilege to support and guide our students during this very challenging time. We would like to thank all of our teachers and support staff for doing their utmost to ensure students were supported at every step of the way during their GCSEs, both on the college site and during required periods of remote learning.

“We would also like to thank all of the students’ families for working together with us and for the support they have shown to their children and to the college in extremely difficult circumstances. We wish

Charlotte Paresys is one of these students. She said: “I’m really proud of the results that I’ve achieved. I’ve had some great teachers and I’m looking forward to staying on at CoLA Sixth Form where I’m hoping to study Maths, Further Maths, French and Economics.

Jesse Ngizwenayo, another student to get straight 9s, added: “I feel elated! I want to thank all my teachers who helped me get these results tody.

I’m so happy I came to CoLA, it really is a place to thrive.”

Finn Wharton also received 9s across the board.

He said: “I’m relieved that all the hard work was worth it. I’m excited for the next chapter at Sixth Form where I hope to study Spanish, English Literature, Biology and Chemistry.”

Overall, the school’s students achieved a 78 per cent pass rate in English and Maths at grade 4 and above, and a 56 per cent pass rate at grade 5 and above.

Cayla was one of several students who achieved outstanding grades, with six grade 9s, and is looking forward to studying A Levels in mathematics, further mathematics, and Geography at Westminster College. She also wants to study mathematics at Waterloo University in Canada.

Her mother Kize said: “You have looked after both my children wonderfully. Thank you to all the staff at Compass.”

Abdul-Mateen scored four grade 9s and goes on to study mathematics, physics, chemistry and geography at London Academy of Excellence.

“I am so proud of my journey and the destination I have reached. This is a special community for me!,” he said. Abdul-Mateen wants to study aeronautical engineering at university in the future.

Rodin was a rebel, a rule-breaker, a revolutionary who was perhaps forced to go that way when his early masterpiece, The Age of Bronze, was deemed so realistic he was accused of casting directly from his model’s body rather than sculpting by hand.

After being put on the defensive he felt he had to prove himself more than others. And he did.

Unlike other sculptors, he would cast multiple copies, then rework each one and assemble the pieces in different combinations, ultimately creating something unique each time without having to remake whole sculptures. The same heads, hands and feet would be placed on different sculptures, though each time having new meaning.

The Making of Rodin focuses on his use of plaster, emphasising how crucial the medium was in his work, and now, in collaboration with the Musée Rodin in Paris, visitors can view original plasters and studies that give a more in-depth insight into the way Rodin worked.

The play is an adaptation of one of the less frequently staged and more frustrating Greek tragedies, Sophocles’ Philoctetes.

Tempest does not stray much from the original plot in which Odysseus, having abandoned the titular character wounded on a desert island at the beginning of the Trojan War, returns to persuade him to come back to Troy with his famous bow and boost the morale of the war-weary troops.

Tempest’s captivating script breathes life into an old story, at once musical and muscly, brimming with rich imagery and complex thought. At the end of one particularly eviscerating monologue in the middle of the play, the stunned audience burst into applause.

The decision to have an all-female cast allows Tempest to explore the performance of masculinity and Lesley Sharp does this well in her brilliant depiction of Philoctetes as a puffed-up, washed-up hero, too settled in his pain to move on. Meanwhile, Gloria Obanyo plays Neoptolemus, the disgruntled son of a dead hero, with all the fragile pride of a teenage boy, and

Anastasia Hille is the weatherbeaten Odysseus whose callousness is punctured briefly by the memory of the war dead.

They move around each other on stage like caged animals, too afraid to show weakness or vulnerability even at the cost of connection.

Whilst their performances are rich, it is the chorus of women who make the play great. An hour and 50 minutes of bullying and bravado would wear thin if it were not for their tenderness and humour. The women are the remnants of a world that once was. Civil war and tsunamis have taken their homes but, unlike the men, they refuse to stagnate. Seen through their eyes the men’s drama becomes ridiculous: “Keep your bloody hair on”, they chide. Not content to passively spectate, the chorus shares their stories; for a minute their lightness is replaced by a deep chasm of grief as they remember the horrors they have seen and suffered.

But unlike the men they refuse purgatory.

In amongst the wreckage, they keep dreaming for one another, tending to each other’s wounds and working to create a space if not free from pain then not bound by it. In Tempest’s dark and complex play, they are beacons reminding us that there is death, yes, but there is a life after it too.

out programmes didn’t pass my cost/ benefit analysis. The Globe isn’t the most comfortable venue in London and a half time stretch and top up at the bar were missed. The lack of programme left one without any explanation for the directorial style choices above.

It is only fair to confess that I am not an avid fan of Shakespeare. Every so often I see a production that almost makes a convert of me. One where the acting is so brilliant that the language barriers melt away. This isn’t quite it. There were some very strong performances. Credit to Shona Babeyemi playing Olivia, Nadi Kemp-Sayfi as Maria, and Nadine Higgin as Sir Toby Belch, for the moments when I stopped straining to understand.

The newly restored original plaster for The Burghers of Calais 1889, can now be seen outside of France for the first time. The bronze cast is on a plinth in Victoria Gardens, by the Houses of Parliament, but in Tate Modern it can be viewed as Rodin wanted it viewed - at eye level - where you can see the Burghers vulnerability and pain as they gave themselves up for execution to the English army under King Edward III; their heroic gesture to spare the townsfolk of Calais. It is my favourite piece in the exhibition.

Moving through the exhibition you suddenly find yourself as the titan looking down at a glass cabinet full of hands in a multitude of shapes and sizes. The Making of Rodin allows visitors to see work never seen before and to get a better understanding of the man himself, which is very much what it did for me.

Over the past 18 months we have all shared the main protagonist’s experience of being washed up unexpectedly by a storm into an unfamiliar landscape. We are also all in need of a good laugh, and this play leant heavily on its comic potential.

A scene where Sir Toby Belch, Lord Andrew Aguecheek and Feste the fool, are berated for their late-night noisy revelry

by Malvolio, in full headmaster/mistress mode, is worth the ticket price on its own. Anyone who has ever tried to keep a straight face whilst slightly the worse for wear will be delighted.

What isn’t so strong is the love story. At the heart of the play are the cross wired lovers, Orsino loves Olivia, Olivia loves Cesario and then Sebastian, his twin Viola loves Orsino, Sir Andrew and Malvolio love Olivia and not even one of these pairings is convincing, though the prize for implausibility goes to Sebastian who was played for laughs to a degree that made him rather unappealing.

If you are fluent in Shakespearean or a Twelfth Night connoisseur, then this might be a great night out. There is certainly a lot of humour and as ever at the Globe, the music was a highlight. The audience threw themselves into clapping and stamping along to various ‘Americana style’ numbers. Great fun was had. “If music be the food of love, play on.”

Surrey pair denied as Durham reach final Mark Stoneman scored 117

By Simon Sinclair sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY WERE defeated by five wickets as Durham secured their place in the Royal London Cup final against Glamorgan after successfully chasing down a total of 281 at Emirates Riverside on Tuesday.

Alex Lees and Scott Borthwick notched 75 and 71 respectively providing the foundation with a 119-run partnership for the second wicket. David Bedingham blasted a quick-fire fifty to send his team into the final at Trent Bridge on Thursday, where the club will aim to win their first trophy since 2014.

Earlier in the day, Chris Rushworth notched three early wickets to hand the hosts a perfect start. However, former Durham captain Mark Stoneman scored a brilliant knock of 117 for the visitors, while Jamie Smith notched a career-best 85 in Surrey’s total of 280 for eight. But,

their efforts were in vain as the home side were equal to the chase to progress.

After inserting the visitors, Rushworth continued his outstanding tournament, capitalising on advantageous conditions from the Lumley End. He found Ryan Patel’s outside edge before producing a sublime delivery to remove Ollie Pope’s middle stump.

Surrey’s hero of their quarter-final win over Gloucestershire, Tim David, arrived at the crease after scoring two centuries and a fifty in his last three innings. However, he was powerless against Rushworth, edging behind to Cameron Bancroft for only a single.

Former Durham opener Stoneman and Smith dug in to reach their fifty partnership. Smith was the first man to fifty, playing a patient knock to reach the milestone from 71 balls.

Stoneman survived a strong lbw appeal from Scott Borthwick before working his way to his third halfcentury of the tournament.

The Surrey pair defied the home

side with a stand of 155 to manoeuvre the visitors into position for a late assault. Borthwick halted their progress by removing Smith lbw for a career-best 85. However, Stoneman thwarted his former club by posting his seventh List A century, striking nine boundaries and two sixes in the process.

Stoneman forged a late partnership with Nico Reifer to push the visitors up to 280 after further scalps from Borthwick and Luke Doneathy appeared to have halted a late charge.

Stoneman was eventually run out for 117, but his century gave the Surrey bowlers a competitive total to defend on a flat wicket.

Durham made a solid start in their reply through Graham Clark, allowing the hosts to record an opening stand of 64. Clark fell four short of a halfcentury, picking out Reifer on the rope as he attempted to pull Matt Dunn to the boundary. Borthwick and Lees were patient in their approach, nurdling the ball around the field to keep the hosts in touch with the

required rate.

Lees was in total control at the crease, working his way to his sixth score of over fifty in the competition.

With Borthwick, the duo passed their century stand for the second wicket, and the Durham skipper soon joined Lees in reaching a half-century, his second in a row. Borthwick was handed the first of two lives by Dunn at fine leg, who failed to come down with a routine catch in the deep, which would cost the visitors.

David notched a vital breakthrough to dismiss Lees lbw, and then spurned a caught and bowled chance to make a double strike to remove Borthwick. The Durham skipper fell for a fine 71 to Dunn, but his brilliant innings and partnership with Lees ensured the hard work was done.

Bedingham all but powered the home side over the line with a 29-ball fifty before Cameron Bancroft struck the winning runs with 15 deliveries to spare to usher the North-East outfit in their first 50-over final in seven years.

After being sent in Knight set about building a total using her wealth of experience and knowledge to pace an innings.

She constantly pushed the run rate and applied pressure on the bowlers. A combination of power and placement created a solid start for the Spirit.

But Capsey had different ideas.

The teenager returned to the bowling attack with Knight and Tammy Beamount going well.

With Capsey’s second delivery she dismissed the England captain - caught off a top edge.

It marked a bowling performance that belied her tender years, blending variations of her right-hand off-breaks, and producing impressive figures of 15 from 20 balls.

At one stage she bowled 10 balls in a row and conceded just five runs.

It was the sort of tactical ploy that The Hundred has created and perhaps an example of one huge advantage Capsey has despite being the youngest player in the competition.

Capsey participated in the ECB Schools Hundred competition, so has more experience of this new and unique format than most of her more senior peers and team-mates.

Sarah Taylor, another England player on the comeback trail through The Hundred, coached Capsey at Bede’s School and honed her all-round skills.

Capsey seems set on the same career path as she has emerged in the past month as a future superstar.

By Sports Reporter sport@southwarknews.co.uk STANSFELD CONTINUED their good start to the SCEFL Division One season as they beat Elmstead 2-0 away from home thanks to goals from Jack Carthy and Ollie Milton last weekend.

Stansfeld started brightly and from the off the opposition defence were struggling to contain the front three.

Milton and Ross Morley both forced the Elmstead goalkeeper into saves in the first five minutes.

Stansfeld kept pressing and on another day could have been out of sight before the breakthrough came in the 35th minute. Morley got the ball on the edge of the box and advanced before he was brought down, Carthy slotting home to make it 1-0.

Five minutes later, Stansfeld felt they should have been awarded a second penalty when a mix-up in the Elmstead defence left Milton with a certain tap-in.

He appeared to be pulled back but the referee decided against giving a spotkick.

It didn’t really matter as a minute later Milton doubled Stansfeld’s lead when he sat the keeper down as he raised his shot into the roof of the net and his side took a comfortable 2-0 lead into the break.

Elmstead came out strongly in the second half but never really troubled Charlie Cottrell in the Stansfeld goal.

Stansfeld should have extended their lead when Milton was sent through on goal with only the keeper to beat but a smart save kept it at 2-0.

The game finished with Stansfeld on the front foot once again and though they would have been satisfied with the 2-0 away win, they knew it should have been more.

Teenage Invincible highlights superstar potential

By Ellen McLaughlin sport@southwarknews.co.uk ONE OF the undoubted joys of The Hundred has been the new storylines that it has produced, most significantly in the women’s game.

Last Saturday at the Kia Oval, the latest chapter in Alice Capsey’s young career was enacted with the England captain, Heather Knight, in the opposite corner.

Both players have vastly contrasting experiences.

But such is The Hundred, both have been equally watchable for their own reasons during the competition this summer.

Knight has travelled the world appearing almost 200 times for her country whilst blending in one-day

experience in both Australia and England.

She has proved herself to be one of the world’s premier all-rounders after assuming the England captaincy at the mere age of 25.

Knight is both a leader and a performer at all levels of the game.

In stark contract Capsey was only able to play in The Hundred this summer after the Invincibles had sought permission from her mother.

Capsey, who just celebrated her seventeenth birthday last Wednesday, progressed through the Surrey system from youth to county and was in the under-11s at the age of eight.

To put that into context, Knight had at that point made her England debut two years earlier.

Before their career paths crossed in the

comprehensive win by chasing down 103 with 13 balls to spare, was that Capsey was not needed to bat.

But the spectators got to see a comparison of quality that will shape women’s cricket for a while to come – a clear reason why crowd record are being broken for the women’s game.

While Knight is far from the end of her career, it is interesting to see her matches against a young player like Capsey and in front of a big crowd and a pressure environment – even if the teen is almost half her age and is performing so well when she is playing around her studies.

The fans saw two players who can only be differentiated by experience not ability.

One can only speculate what a 30-yearold Alice Capsey will have achieved.

A SECOND-half penalty denied Dulwich Hamlet a winning start to the National League South season, as visitors Chippenham Town left SE22 with a 1-1 draw last Saturday.

Champion Hill opened its doors to 1,922 fans in what was the first competitive match since March 2020 unbound by Covid restrictions, but manager Gavin Rose could not make the game after spending a short time in hospital last week with the virus.

Assistant boss Junior Kadi took charge and handed debuts from the start to Grenada international defender Tyrone Sterling, midfielders Jordan Green and James Dayton, as well as forward Darren McQueen whose cross in the 35th minute beautifully picked out Danny Mills – and it was a trademark header from the striker into the right corner of the net to give Dulwich the half-time lead that their dominance in possession deserved.

An entourage of camera and sound operators surrounded new Hamlet board member Peter Crouch in the main stand, where he was sat alongside chairman Ben Clasper. The ex-England striker has begun filming Save Our Beautiful Game, a series of eight 60-minute films which he’ll star in to hopefully help inspire his former club to success. Crouch leapt to his feet when Mills scored the opening goal.

But a comfortable first-half display was turned upside-down in the 54th minute when Chippenham captain Kieran Parselle was tripped in the Dulwich area, allowing midfielder Marlon Jackson, once of Bristol City, to strike the resulting penalty into Charlie

Dulwich Hamlet aren’t due to play again until Saturday, August 28 when Dartford travel to Champion Hill. The club confirmed in a statement on Friday that Rose would be missing the Chippenham game, and new signing

DULWICH HAMLET winger James Dayton is proud to call the club his new footballing home after joining from Leyton Orient this summer.

Dayton made his debut in Saturday’s 1-1 draw against Chippenham Town in front of 1,922 fans at Champion Hill, the latest transfer in a career that has taken him from the Crystal Palace academy to Kilmarnock, then to Oldham United, followed by time on loan at St Mirren and on to spells with Cheltenham Town and the Orient.

After being released by Palace, Dayton spent time training with the Glenn Hoddle Academy before that first move north of the border, and he tasted National League title success

with both Cheltenham in 2016 and Orient in 2019.

Dayton, 32, sees no reason why Dulwich can’t be challenging high up the National League South this season.

Speaking after the draw, he told the News: “If we perform like that and keep adding to that then who knows where we can go.

“The supporters came out and supported us in pre-season and have come out in their numbers opening game, so hopefully that keeps growing and growing. The lads really appreciate them and the more they back us the better.”

Dayton added: “I’ve had an alright career. I’ve won a few trophies, a couple of promotions and I’ve come here because I want to win wherever I go. I think there’s only been one club that I haven’t been successful

at and that was Oldham because we didn’t win anything.”

Danny Mills scored first in the game before a penalty from Chippenham’s Marlon Jackson deprived the Hamlet of all three points.

Assistant boss Junior Kadi and coach Junior James took charge of the team in the absence of Gavin Rose, who spent a short time in hospital last week with Covid.

Dayton offered Rose his best regards, and opened up a little bit more on his affinity with Dulwich.

He said: “When I was sixteen I moved to south London so I’ve always known about Dulwich. My wife was brought up in Dulwich and I knew the fan base the club had.

“It’s a big club for the division it’s in. Just an all-round great club and somewhere I wanted to join.”

Dayton wished his manager well.

Speaking to the News after the match, Dayton said: “He’s definitely on the mend, but when he’ll be back no one knows. All the lads wish him a speedy recovery and to come back healthy, ready to kick us on.”

Defender makes under-23s return

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ALEX MITCHELL was back in action for the under-23s this week as Millwall weigh up the next move to advance his career.

The Lions feel that centre-back Mitchell, 19, has moved on from Professional Development League football after he proved his worth at senior level last season.

Mitchell was a standout performer after joining Bromley, helping them into the play-offs before they lost in the quarterfinals against Hartlepool United, who went on to be promoted to League Two. Millwall believe that Mitchell now needs a move to the Football League to continue his impressive development.

And Mitchell told the News at the end of last season that he also feels he has moved beyond under-23 football.

Isaac Olaofe, who has recently returned to training after an injury in pre-season, is also in the same boat. His performances and fourteen National League goals to help Sutton United to an historic firstever promotion to the Football League showed he is ready for the next step.

There are League Two clubs interested in both players.

Millwall could also look at loaning out promising attacker Sean O’Brien, who played in a pre-season game for Gary Rowett’s side against Fulham.

Mitchell in particular has impressed Rowett and the coaching staff and was regularly involved in the first half of the pre-season friendly schedule. He scored a consolation in a 4-1 defeat to a strong Arsenal side and impressed his teammates with his attitude.

Another player who was in action in the 1-0 win over Crewe this week but who didn’t have such a successful loan spell last season was left-back Junior Tiensia after he joined Sutton. But the Lions hope to send him to the National League again this season.

Meanwhile, Kevin Nugent’s side dominated against Crewe in their Professional Development League South fixture at Calmont Road.

Mitchell headed straight at goalkeeper Tom Booth in the third minute and then O’Brien glanced just wide eighteen minutes in.

Blackburn had not offered much in response but got level with fourteen minutes of the contest left. It was a gift. There shouldn’t have been much danger as Joe Rothwell lined up a free-kick wide on the right, but Ben Brereton-Diaz got to the delivery first to brilliantly glance a header across Bialkowski into the bottomleft corner.

No excuses as Lions blow dominance against Rovers

By Alex Grace at The Den sport@southwarknews.co.uk THIS WILL have felt very disappointing for Lions fans, after they watched their team dominate Blackburn Rovers for 90 minutes only to see them give up a goal from the only opposition shot on target.

It brought back memories of last season for the returning home faithful: solid at the back but still lacking that something up front.

Millwall had fifteen shots to Rovers’ two but the hosts only got two of them on target. It’s clear to see where the work on the training

ground is needed.

Gary Rowett’s recruitment has focused on adding to Milwall’s goal threat, and George Saville and Benik Afobe have shown they can do that.

Rowett’s Millwall retain that hardworking side but they try to play out from the back and through the thirds rather than mostly rely on the direct play that defined them under Neil Harris.

The Lions can also make use of their substantial physical attributes, especially when at The Den, channelling the crowd to their advantage to make their visitors feel uncomfortable.

Keeper ‘deserves’ to be No.1 as he battles to keep new arrival at bay

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BARTOSZ BIALKOWSKI has no intention of allowing George Long a glimpse of his No.1 jersey and says he wants to play as long as possible as he heads into his mid-30s.

Bialkowski, 34, agreed a contract extension until 2023 last week and is in his third season as Millwall’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The former Southampton and Ipswich ex-Poland international hasn’t missed a minute of Championship action since he replaced Frank Fielding three minutes before half-time in the opening game of the 2019-20 season.

Long, who joined after Fielding left in the summer, wasn’t shy in stating his ambition is to play at the top level. Long is seven years younger than Bialkowski and made his debut in the 2-1 win over Portsmouth in the second round of the EFL Cup. Bialkwoski kept the joint-highest number of league clean sheets in his first season (16) and joint-third highest in 2020-21 (17).

“It’s always nice to have [the faith of the manager] but I think I’ve showed it on the pitch,” Bialkowski said. “I deserve that No.1 spot.

“Listen, when you’re enjoying your football it’s totally different. You’re playing with confidence and it’s that simple, really. “[Long] is a great goalie, great lad. He’s competitive and he’s always working.

We train hard. He’s pushing. Every single player wants to play and he’s no different.

“But I’m not just going to let him do that.

I’m going to keep improving, keep working hard so I can keep my spot.

“LT [Lee Turner], the goalie coach, is working us very hard during the week.

That’s all you can do, keep trying to improve all the time.

“I want to play as long as I can. I’m fit and healthy, I’m looking after myself I’d like to think very well.

“I’m very happy here, I’m enjoying my football. It was really a no-brainer for me [to sign an extension]. As soon as I heard the club wanted to extend my contract I didn’t have to think about it, to be honest.

“I said I was happy to stay, happy to extend my deal and I’m looking forward to the future.

“You always want to improve. My aim is to keep improving every single day.

Obviously it would be nice to beat my clean-sheet record, but it’s not always down to me. It’s always down to every single one of us.

“Defensively in the last two seasons we’ve been very solid. The credit has to go to every single one of us, not only to me.

“As much as I would like to keep clean sheets every single game I know it’s not going to happen. Our aim is to go into the games determined not to concede goals.”

Bialkowski believes boss Gary Rowett has strengthened the squad this summer. George Saville re-joined from Middlesbrough, and Benik Afobe scored the first goal of his loan spell from Stoke in the 2-1 defeat to Fulham on Tuesday evening.

Bialkowski has also been impressed with another new recruit in front of him, Northern Ireland international Daniel Ballard on loan from Arsenal.

Bialkowski said: “He’s unbelievable.

He’s such a young lad but he played very well last season for Blackpool, he won promotion.

“You can see he’s playing with confidence, he’s such a talented boy. He’s working hard as well, he’s got the mindset to push forward and he wants to achieve big things. I’m sure he’s going to do that.

“We’re lucky we got him because he’s going to be a big player for us. He’s probably going to be a big player for a Premier League club, Arsenal or wherever.

“What the gaffer has done this season is added quality into the team. Everyone can see that. They’re quality players.

“Sav is brilliant on the ball. Benik is a great finisher, he just needs balls into the box and he’s going to take them. He’s showing that on the training pitch.

“We’ve got quality, we’ve added quality so we should be positive about the future.

“We’ve had spells during games when we’ve shown we can play very well.

Obviously you’re not going to play well for the full 90 minutes, other teams are going to have spells.

“We just need to take our chances, maybe be more clinical and positive. Scottie [Malone] and Jed [Wallace] showed us on Saturday that they’re brilliant. They’re positive-minded, they want to go forward, put the balls into the box and create chances.”

Bialkowski may have more of a battle on his hands to have his instructions reach the ears of his defenders with supporters back.

But he is thrilled with their return.

“The first game of the season, QPR away, the atmosphere was brilliant,” he said. “At the end of the day you want to play for the fans, you want to play in front

of big crowds.

“We missed that so much. Over the last eighteen months we got used to playing without fans but it was such a nice feeling to have them back.

“They’re brilliant. Even though we lost [on Tuesday] the second half we gave it a good go and they a p p re c i a te d that.

That’s all they want to see, 100 per cent commitment and desire on the pitch.

“If you do that I’m sure they’re going to be happy.”

Fans are still waiting to see a first league win this season after

three games. It has been a tricky opening schedule against sides that have been bogie teams for Millwall in recent seasons.

And it doesn’t get any easier with Cardiff away next up this Saturday.

Bialkowski added: “There are no easy games in the Championship. In every game you need to be 100 per cent ready, play with commitment, desire, win your individual battles.

“I’m sure it’s going to be another fight on Saturday but we’re going to be ready.

“It’s still early, third game of the season. We know we could have done better with the start but it’s such a long season.”

“We need to keep our heads up, keep working hard on the training pitch. I’m sure the first win is going to come - hopefully on Saturday.”

Those that weren’t at The Den or didn’t tune in to Sky Sports might think that Gary Rowett’s side gave the Championship leaders a proper run for their money, when in truth, the Lions were just extremely fortunate after some poor Fulham finishing, combined with a fortunate late consolation.

The one positive for Millwall was that Benik Afobe finally broke his duck for the club, and while it didn’t mean anything in terms of points, it should do the striker’s confidence the world of good.

But the defeat means it’s the Lions’ worst return from their opening three league matches since they were promoted back to the Championship four years ago when they racked up just a single point under Neil Harris.

While there’s absolutely no reason for Rowett to press the panic button just yet, the manner of this defeat would have hurt the Millwall boss more than the result itself.

It was an ugly display. And although you must factor in Fulham’s Premier League quality – with their starting central midfielder Jean Michael Seri costing considerably more than Millwall’s entire squad – Rowett’s men should have shown more during those early stages to prevent the visitors from virtually having the game sewn up inside eight minutes.

Lions slump with visitors Ful of themselves

The west London side struck early and showed their class in their thumping victory over Huddersfield on Saturday, but that was nothing compared to this.

Marco Silva’s men needed just 134 seconds before they cut Millwall apart. Ivan Cavaleiro and Fabio Carvalho carved out an opening for Championship predator Aleksandar Mitrovic to convert yet another at this level.

To illustrate the gulf in quality, those three involved in the opener were all on target in the Premier League last season.

But it was the least experienced of those in eighteen-year-old Carvalho, making just his sixth start at senior level, who was the one causing Millwall a constant headache.

Less than five minutes later, the youngster raced in between Murray Wallace and Jake Cooper and blasted home Fulham’s second following a perfectly-weighted pass from Neeskens Kebano.

By this point, a restless Den crowd were probably wondering when Fulham were going to declare.

Millwall did find their feet midway through that opening period, but for

all their neat and tidy build-up play in and around the box, the away side’s blistering pace and quality on the counter-attack made them a constant threat.

And one moment just past the halfhour mark summed up proceedings.

The Lions had been probing, granted with little joy, but seconds after Scott Malone was robbed on the edge of the box, Fulham went from one end of the pitch to the other and almost trebled their lead.

Two passes and a lot of pace and Fulham were in front of goal and in with another chance. Carvalho, who was a thorn in Millwall’s side all evening, was once again the provider, racing more than 50 yards before putting Cavaleiro clear on goal with only Bartosz Bialkowski in his sights. But if there was ever a case of having too much time, then this was it. Fortunately for the home side, Cavaleiro didn’t bring his shooting boots and somehow blasted wide of the target.

But with nothing sticking up front and the hard-working Afobe in desperate need of some help,

Millwall’s wretched first-half display prompted Rowett to make a half-time substitution.

Mahlon Romeo – one of two changes made by the Lions boss from the 1-1 draw against Blackburn – made way, with Matt Smith getting his customary off-the-bench appearance slightly earlier than usual.

But not even Smith’s 6ft6ins frame could get anything to stick. Moments into the second half, Bialkowski kept out goal-scorers Mitrovic and Carvalho in quick succession as the Fulham onslaught showed few signs of letting up.

Only an heroic Daniel Ballard goalline clearance prevented them from adding to their tally – with substitute Frank Anguissa the architect, only this time Carvalho somehow failed to beat the on-loan Arsenal man on the line.

It took Millwall until the final ten minutes before they were able to provide any service for Smith, who did little of note until the latter stages.

However, when a golden chance fell his way from Murray Wallace’s delivery, the big striker wasn’t able to

direct his header on target, let alone get on the scoresheet against his former side.

Moments later, though, Millwall did find a route back when Jake Cooper’s diagonal ball was met by Smith, who picked out Afobe for his first goal in Lions colours, not that the on-loan Stoke striker knew much about it.

Remarkably, despite having been upstaged for almost the entire evening, the Lions were suddenly in sight of the west Londoners and just one goal away from the unlikeliest of draws.

Afobe almost grabbed his second moments later, but could only sting the palms of Paulo Gazzaniga. Then Cooper couldn’t direct his header on target when the former Tottenham goalkeeper got nowhere near Jed Wallace’s last-gasp cross.

Rowett would have been at least pleased with the fight his side showed in those closing stages, but the 80 minutes prior to their late rally leaves the Lions boss with plenty to fix as Millwall go in search of their first Championship victory of the season at Cardiff on Saturday.

Cooper, 26, is next in line for the armband if Alex Pearce doesn’t start with Shaun Hutchinson set to be injured.

Cooper is known for his work ethic and he often spends extra hours in the gym. He dislocated his shoulder twice last season but didn’t need surgery and has fully built back the strength in the area.

Pearce is probably the Lions’ most vocal presence, and without fans it was possible to hear the constant instructions he gives to team-mates.

Hutchinson is also not afraid to bark out demands to team-mates.

“Coops is one that leads by example a little bit more. He’s probably not as vocal as Pearcey and Hutchy,” Rowett said.

“But he’s well-experienced by now and knows exactly what we want. He leads by example in terms of the way he prepares for games and goes about games.

“Everyone’s different in the way they lead. Pearcey is really vocal in the way he organises. Hutchy is similar, Coops is probably a tiny bit quieter.

“But he still has that same presence.”

Even without Hutchinson and Mason Bennett, Rowett is set to have some tough decisions before naming his bench with match-day squads reduced back to eighteen this season from 20.

Rowett acknowledges that is tough on players who work hard all week but are then left out on match-days.

He said: “The Premier League is three subs from nine and that gives you a really good chance of having everybody involved all the time.

“There aren’t many other businesses where Monday to Friday you’re an important part of the process and then on Saturday you don’t feel part

of it because you’re out of that squad.

“Most managers will say the same, it’s probably the most difficult part of the game because you can only pick eighteen players in your matchday squad whereas most teams have more than that in their full group.

“It’s not nice, it’s not ideal but as a manager you try to make players understand that sometimes it’s a tactical decision the eighteen you’ve gone with. Sometimes it’s not necessarily a negative reason why three or four are left out of the squad.

“But of course if you’re a player you’ll tend to see it like that. Everyone wants to play and be involved, so it is a challenge.

“My preference would have been to be able to pick three from nine subs.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL MANAGER Gary Rowett said the club are “working very hard” to try to add at least one more player to the squad before the transfer deadline – but the Lions have yet to receive acceptable offers for available players.

Millwall need to offload before they can add to their squad again, but League One clubs – where the likes of Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Ben Thompson would usually be in demand – are struggling for cash after more than a year without fans.

Portsmouth are interested in Thompson but reports from there suggested they would struggle to match his wage demands.

The Lions are hoping there will be demand towards the end of the window for some of their fringe players.

“There’s nothing definitive at this moment,” Rowett said. “There hasn’t really been anything in terms of offers to us that would allow it to happen.

“That’s partly down to lack of funds in League One as well as a difficult situation economically for a lot of clubs.

Meanwhile, Millwall continued to secure their most important players for at least the next two seasons as Bartosz Bialkowski’s contract was extended until the summer of 2023 last week.

Rowett said: “From a player’s perspective you’d rather know where you are and have that security just mentally in terms of knowing you’re not coming out of contract shortly.

“From the club’s perspective, we work hard to try and make sure we have a core group of players over the next two or three seasons.

“It’s important that a lot of the young players have signed extensions to make sure we have that little bit of a pathway for them.

“And it’s no different for some of the players that have played regular firstteam football. We need to protect the core of the squad and try to add to that. That’s been a lot of the work that’s gone in behind the scenes.

“We’re in a good place because of it.”

Hutchinson, 30, picked up a thigh injury before the 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers last Saturday and had a scan on Monday.

Hutchinson was unavailable to face his former club Fulham on Tuesday evening. Millwall travel to Cardiff this Saturday before taking on Cambridge United in the second round of the EFL Cup next Tuesday.

“He’s had his scan, we’re just waiting for the results to come through,” Rowett said earlier this week. “But it certainly doesn’t look like it’s going to be a quick turnaround for him which we thought it might be.

“We’ll wait until I’m completely sure before we make a decision on how long. But it looks like he’s not going to be back within the next week or two.”
