During election week, running from July 19-25, young people across the borough selected 46 candidates to represent schools and community areas, all aged between fourteen and nineteen.

Among those voted in were Southwark’s first ever ‘youth leader’ and ‘deputy youth leader’. They will all serve a two-year term.

The new parliament will be the voice of young people across Southwark and help shape Southwark Council’s policies, including its flagship ‘youth new deal’.

Voters were asked what issues they wanted addressing as a priority, and answered with Black Lives Matter, knife crime and mental health. Their first formal meeting will be held this September.

Play concerns on ‘England’s most patriotic estate’

Chris Dowse, who is one of the ‘three musketeers’ who help organise the nationally-famous England flag display during football tournaments, said his fouryear-old child was playing on the swings in the playground of the Kirby Estate with his cousin when it broke.

Luckily the boy was not hurt, but Chris said the condition of the estate’s play area was symptomatic of a wider problem.

“He was shook up, that’s for sure,” Chris said of his son. “It’s not what you expect when

Lions linking up with scouser counterparts on food poverty

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Liverpool MP visited the Rotherhithe Festival last Saturday to hand out free healthy food and promote links between the football food bank he supports and Millwall’s efforts to help struggling people in Bermondsey.

Ian Byrne, the Labour MP for Liverpool West Derby, supports the Right To Food campaign, which is run by fans of rivals Liverpool and Everton. The campaign was running a ‘market stall’ next to the festival’s main stage, where people could come up and take free fruit and vegetables.

Byrne told the News on Saturday: “We were asked to come to the festival to speak about it, but we thought we’d come up with the kit, we’d show how we do it in Liverpool. We’ve got five market stalls in Liverpool that we use to feed people that need it, and also destigmatise it. You wouldn’t think that you were in a food bank.

“Just before lockdown, football fans were donating 30 per cent of all food that was going to food banks in Liverpool. It was hard to maintain in lockdown, it was a case of collecting money online mostly.”

Byrne said the group had been working with various London-based groups and others throughout the country. The campaign pushed for “universal free school meals; community kitchens; reasonable portions in benefits and wages; ensured food security and independent enforcement” to be included in the UK’s National Food Strategy report published earlier this summer.

“We wanted to show solidarity, which is why we’ve come down from Liverpool,” Byrne said.

We have lots of links with people who are fighting food poverty in London and that’s what we want, because if you want to change legislation, you need people from every community coming together.”

man who filmed himself with his 'blicky' in nightclub is convicted

kevin@southwarknews.co.uk A Dulwich man has been convicted after he brazenly filmed himself on social media with a knife in a nightclub.

Twenty-three-year-old Abel Buafo pleaded guilty to numerous offences between 12 March 2020 and Thursday, 29 July, including possession of a knife, possession MDMA and cocaine, possession of cannabis, possession of criminal property and being concerned in the supply of cocaine.

He will be sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Friday, 17 September.

The court heard that detectives were alerted to Snapchat videos of Buafo at a nightclub on Silver Street in Enfield, on 22 December 2019 where he recorded himself in ‘selfie style’ waving a black folding knife around the venue. Officers reviewed CCTV from the nightclub for the same evening which corroborated the Snapchat footage.

The footage showed Buafo dancing and singing while waving the knife around, pointing it at his phone’s camera as well as towards people. The footage also showed Buafo ‘fist bumping’ people while holding the knife.

He is seen several times to get the knife out of his pocket and flick it open – at one point he is seen to drop it on the floor before picking it up. In the Snapchat footage, he says he has his ‘blicky at the rave,’ while holding the knife up to the camera. Blicky is a slang term for knife.

In Snapchat footage of Buafo outside the club, he states ‘I’ve got my blicky on me.’ His friend nudges him and says ‘shhh’ to which

Buafo replies ‘I don’t even care about the feds bruv, on my mum’s life.’

Later that day he posted an image on Snapchat looking sad with the caption ‘lost my shank.’ Shank is also a slang term for knife.

On 11 February 2020, officers forced entry to his home address on Berry Lane, Dulwich. Upon entry, officers noticed that the sink was overflowing with a number of plates, which had a white coloured layer of bubbles forming on them. Officers noted that they were not ‘typical washingup bubbles’ but something derived from a diluted powder of chemical – giving the impression that Buafo had hurriedly flushed something down the sink. Officers took a sample of the white powder in the sink, which was found to be phenacetin, a well-known cutting agent for making crack cocaine.

Officers searched the property and found an overwhelming amount of drugs paraphernalia as well as scales, snap bags, a hydraulic press, cannabis and MDMA pills.

Officers also found £225 in cash and £1,200 in counterfeit cash as well as a Rambo-style knife.

Police also searched another address linked to Buafo on Walworth Road, where they found a large bag of cannabis, 903mg of cocaine, two scales and snap bags.

Buafo was arrested but police said he answered no comment to all questions put to him – even when he was shown the CCTV and Snapchat footage.

Detectives examined Buafo’s phone where they said they found evidence of drug supply going back to September 2018 as well as evidence of him living a lavish lifestyle with a photo album of expensive items.

NHS nurse helps save man stabbed in broad daylight Photo by Simon Paul

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An NHS nurse gave first aid to a man stabbed outside her Brandon Estate home in a shocking broad daylight attack last week.

The victim, aged 28, was knifed in Otto Street at 3.30pm on Wednesday, August 4.

Witness Simon Paul, who lives in the estate, told the News: "I heard loads of commotion downstairs and saw two young youths on mountain bikes arguing with a man inside a white Mercedes car.

"He was arguing with them because they had allegedly tried to rob his sister. She managed to run off.

"Then all I know is that they were off on their bikes shouting 'that's what you deserve'."

Detective Sergeant Raymond Sekalongo, the investigating officer who was on the Central South’s Proactive Investigations team at the time, said: “Buafo was arrogant enough to think he was above the law and thought he could not only take a knife into a nightclub – but broadcast himself on social media doing it. Buafo was wrong not to ‘care about the feds,’ because the Met is absolutely committed to taking offensive weapons and drugs off the streets of London. The knife in the nightclub and the Rambo knife found in Buafo’s address is yet another example of the intractable link between drug supply and violence. Those carrying weapons and supplying drugs should expect a visit from us in the near future.”

Walworth man jailed after stabbing teen for designer jacket on the Southbank

He was given a four and a half year sentence

A Walworth man has been jailed for four-and-a-half years after stabbing his teenage victim on Southbank while robbing him of a designer jacket.

The court heard that in the early hours of the morning at around 1am on Sunday, 25 April a nineteenyear-old man was with a friend on the Southbank when they were approached by a group of men.

One of the group demanded the victim hand over his designer jacket.

At the same time another member of the group stabbed him twice in the leg.

Police were called and the victim was taken to hospital by the London Ambulance Service. He underwent surgery before being discharged.

The suspects fled before police arrived and detectives carried out a huge CCTV trawl to locate them.

The court heard how police recovered footage of Lucas Bugeja Price wiping blood from the blade of a knife.

Officers carried out a search at his Walworth home where they found the designer jacket and trousers stained with the victim's blood.

A mentally ill teenager who stabbed his half-brother to death detained in hospital

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A mentally ill teenager who killed his half-brother at his 30th birthday party in Kennington has been detained in hospital after what has been described as a ‘truly tragic’ court case.

Simon ran downstairs to find his neighbour, an NHS nurse.

She put him in the recovery position and helped to stem the bleeding until police, paramedics and London's Air Ambulance arrived minutes later.

Although she wishes to remain anonymous, Simon described her as doing a 'fantastic job' that ultimately could have helped save the victim's life, saying she deserved recognition for her quick-thinking and brave actions.

"That's three stabbings within yards of the house within two months," he added.

The victim was taken to hospital and police have since confirmed his injuries are 'not life-threatening'.

In a statement, The Met confirmed there have been no arrests. Any witnesses should call police on 101 or, to remain anonymous, Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

He was arrested and later charged.

The 20-year-old was sentenced at Inner London Crown Court on Wednesday, 4 August, after he pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent, robbery and possession of an offensive weapon at the same court on Thursday, 27 May. Detective Constable John Edwards, from the Burglary and Robbery Investigation Team in Lambeth, said: "This was a shocking and unprovoked act of violence that left the victim with significant injuries.

"A dedicated team of detectives carried out extensive enquiries to locate the person responsible for the stabbing and to bring them to justice."

Nineteen-year-old Dwight Junior Freeman, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey on Monday (August 9) to the manslaughter of his sibling Jahreau Shepherd on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

He also pleaded guilty to wounding with intent in relation to a second male victim.

The court heard that Dwight attacked his brother with two large knives at Jahreau’s 30th birthday party in Kennington’s Venn Park in the evening of July 11, last year in front of sixty horrified guests.

Jahreau tried to escape toward the park but tripped on some stairs leading to Vauxhall Street, whereupon his brother stabbed him ‘multiple times’. He was pronounced dead after police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

A 26-year-old man who rushed to Jahreau’s aid was also stabbed in the chest but, miraculously, survived the attack.

KIlled ...Jahreau Shepherd arrested the teenager in Newquay on July 16, and charged him two days later with murder, attempted murder and possession of an offensive weapon. The attempted murder was later reduced to wounding with intent. The possession of an offensive weapon charge is to lay on file.

Two consultant forensic psychiatrists gave evidence in court that Dwight was suffering from paranoid schizophrenia at the time he killed his brother and his ability to understand his actions was substantially impaired.

"Jahreau was celebrating his 30th birthday listening to music and enjoying a barbeque surrounded by his loved ones.

“His life was cut short in an extremely violent manner which shocked and appalled those present.

"Jahreau was well loved in the local area and also amongst the mixed martial arts community.

“He turned to the sport towards the end of his life and was a champion fighter. I would like to extend my sincere condolences to Jahreau’s family and friends whilst also thanking the numerous witnesses who came forward to assist the investigation.

“In particular, I would like to thank those whose quick thinking actions saved the life of the second victim.”

An eighteen-year-old man was also arrested in connection with the investigation but was subsequently released and no further action was taken against him.

Matthew Milner and his Polish-born wife Maria travelled to Torun in her homeland this month to see his wife’s parents.

The 38-year-old, his wife and their fivemonth-old son Anthony took the trip to the city which features a historic Unesco heritage site.

Matthew, who explained that the London couple have both been double vaccinated, said: “My wife’s parents wanted to see their grandson. And the fact we were both double vaccinated was reassuring.

“We knew the guidance had changed so to find out what we needed to do, we did a mixture of Googling and

checking the official Government website.

“I was intending to return to work in the office on our return and we saw that being double vaccinated meant we didn’t have to isolate for 10 days after our Day 2 test. We also found out we would only have to do the ‘Day 2’ test when we got back home and that made life quite easy for me to get back to work.

“Finding out what we had to do and what had changed wasn’t too bad.”

Bermondsey estate mount their fight against infilling

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk People on a Bermondsey estate have slammed plans to build new council flats on their car park in the latest example of Southwark residents rebelling against infill plans.

Southwark Council has floated plans to build about thirteen flats on the car park of the Vauban Estate, which borders Spa

Gardens - although no application has been submitted yet. But a group of residents say they have collected signatures from 92 out of 102 households on the estate who are against the plans, over concerns about a loss of light and sense of connection to the gardens, as well as a loss of parking.

Southwark is overcrowded and thousands of people are stuck in unsuitable housing, waiting for council accommodation. The council plans to build 11,000 new homes by 2043, many through infill plans - building on spaces within

Initial plans show the new buildings, which would have a maximum of four storeys, would be twelve-fifteen metres away from the windows of existing flats.

The council says the plans aim to minimise loss of light in the block next to the new flats. The plans would also include a path through the new block to maintain access to Spa Gardens, the council said.

Southwark expects to submit a planning application in autumn this year. If that is successful, building work will begin in

spring 2022 and finish in winter 2023.

Humaira Ali, a Liberal Democrat councillor for the neighbouring London Bridge and West Bermondsey ward, said that council officers and local councillors had not engaged enough with residents over building plans. “Residents on the Vauban have a long running set of issues including drains, damp and have been repeatedly left in the dark over new plans. Residents got in touch with Damian [O’Brien], William [Houngbo] and I as neighbouring ward councillors and as the Liberal Democrat opposition to ask if we would hear their concerns, which we did.

“This is not about being for or against building new homes. Residents have asked that anything built here has an integrated design with the current estate, that the estate improvements consider resolving existing issues and that the landscaping draws the whole estate together. Furthermore the Council needs to plan properly for the impact of removing the car park so that residents don’t end up with engines idling under their bedroom windows.”

Council officers formed a group to consult with locals and help shape the plans, but Vauban resident and group member Philip Carr said he felt more like he was being updated on plans in the meetings rather than consulted.

The Vauban Estate news is the latest criticism of Southwark’s borough-wide infill programme, which has been plagued by repeated allegations of insufficient consultation and engagement with estate residents.

of poor consultation, lack of co-design and poor change management. We are seeing repeated gaps in communication which leads to great anxiety and often leaves residents with unanswered questions.”

Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “We are proposing to build 13 new muchneeded new council homes on the old Vauban Estate car park on Alscot Road.

Like most local authorities in London, we have an acute lack of truly affordable housing, and we have over 15,000 households on our housing waiting list, with many people living in unsuitable or overcrowded accommodation. There are 22 households on the Vauban Estate alone that are living in housing need. These new homes are desperately needed, and our local lettings policy means that at least fifty percent of the new homes here would be offered to local tenants already living in the area.

“Consultation with existing residents on the Vauban Estate has been extensive and we have been listening to their views and ideas on this development since October 2019. However, I do acknowledge that the coronavirus pandemic has disrupted our consultation over the last year, and we were not able to carry out engagement activities such as the door knocking and face-toface consultation events which we usually would. I recently met with residents from the estate who organised the petition and I agreed that we will carry out a wider consultation now that social distancing restrictions have eased. I look forward to continuing a close dialogue with residents here to deliver the new council homes that the community desperately needs.”

It noted: “Two global emergencies are severely affecting Peckham communities right now, COVID-19 and climate change.

Both have emerged years after planning permission for development on Peckham Green was granted. This is especially true in a borough ranked fifth-worst in London for access to green space. The current pandemic is far from over, and it would be foolish to act as if COVID-19 will be the last pandemic Southwark has to face.

“Southwark’s 2019 declaration of a climate emergency means the Peckham Green development must be reassessed for health, well-being and climate resilience.

“It’s imperative the Council recognise our limited green space as part of its promised strategy for climate adaptation.

“Concreting over Peckham Green will only worsen flooding and the urban heat island. The potential for more trees to keep cool in heat waves would be lost forever.”

On Tuesday, Cllr Stephanie

Cryan told the News there were 270 households on the housing waiting list in Peckham ward alone who could benefit from the new houses being built on the site, which had previously been ‘privately owned derelict residential land’.

“We have worked closely with residents and other stakeholders in the area to create the designs for the new development and we are confident that it will enhance the surrounding area as well as providing high-quality new council homes for local people,” she said.

“We know how important green spaces are for our residents, which is why we carefully assess the local area when we plan any new developments.

“Sumner Road Park and the start of the Surrey Canal Park are both within easy walking distance of the site, and all of the new homes will have either balconies or garden spaces.”

The revamped building in Vestry Road will include eleven new council homes on the upper floors on top of a new community hall.

Half of the new homes will be offered first to residents who live in the immediate area and are in overcrowded or unsuitable housing.

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, said: “I’m really excited about the Vestry Road development which will provide a new, upgraded

TRA hall for local residents here as well as creating much-needed new council homes for the local community.

“Innovations such as this can transform underused spaces in our borough to create the affordable housing our residents desperately need.”

The new building will be five storeys and include one, two and three bed flats.

It has been designed by architects Fraser Brown Mackenna and will also benefit from a new open walkway - replacing the current covered one leading into a landscaped courtyard and playground.

Work is expected to begin in the spring of 2022 and finish toward the end of 2023.

Protestors were out in force at the park near Sumner Road, known historically as the ‘Flaxyard site’ as hopes faded that Southwark Council would u-turn on its decision to go ahead with the new homes.

Southwark Council, which had purchased the site in the 1990s and earmarked it for new housing while temporarily designating it as a public park.

The local authority now plans to build 120 new homes on the green, of which 96 would be for social rent and 24 sold as shared ownership.

Campaigners, uniting under the banner of ‘Save Peckham Green’, have criticised the decision to build on green space both in terms of tree and biodiversity loss but also for the impact on residents.

Last week Southwark Council’s new council homes boss Stephanie Cryan said where to build new homes was ‘always a difficult decision’ but she and the council had to balance the needs and wants of residents against developments with the very pressing housing crisis which has left 15,000 households languishing on its waiting list.

Campaigners say a greater focus on bringing back empty homes into use and holding developers' affordable housing pledges to account would help alleviate these pressures without creating densely packed new housing.

fire breaks out in new development

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A fire broke out in the new pavilion in Elephant Park last Friday morning, August 6.

Operators took fourteen calls to the blaze, which started in a building under construction in Deacon Street.

One man was treated at the scene.

There have been no reports of other injuries.

Part of the first-floor roof terrace was damaged by the fire, which broke out at around 11.44am.

Four fire engines and 25 firefighters from Peckham, Lambeth and Shadwell stations brought it under control by 12.14pm.

The cause is now being investigated.

The fire comes just weeks after a firefighters battled a huge inferno under the arches at Elephant Road, caused by an electrical fault in a car.

A spokesperson for developer Lendlease said: “A fire on the terrace of a pavilion we are building within Elephant Park has been extinguished.

“One member of the construction team was treated on the scene and then taken to hospital for further precautionary checks.

“Our thanks go to the emergency services for their swift and exceptional response.

“A full and comprehensive investigation will be carried out into the cause of the fire.

RAF helicopters spotted landing in Southwark Park

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Rotherhithe and Bermondsey residents were startled to see RAF helicopters landing in Southwark Park last week as part of a Londonwide training exercise.

The Puma helicopters, which came from the RAF Benson air base in Wiltshire, touched down at about 5.45pm on Wednesday, August 4, before flying off to the south-east.

A spokesperson for the RAF said: “RAF Puma helicopters from RAF Benson have recently been operating in London area completing essential operational training.

Our crews use a variety of Helicopter Landing Sites (HLS) such as Southwark park and training areas around the whole of the UK for training and vary their routes and locations to maximise training benefit and ensure that our crews continue to be ready for global operations.”

These operations include civil exercises like Operation Ruman, a 2017 relief programme for people affected by Hurricane Irma in the Caribbean, and Operation Rescript, part of the UK government’s Covid-19 response.

RAF Benson, where the Puma helicopters came from, is the base for the Covid Support Force Aviation Task Forcea programme to transport critically ill Covid-19 patients to hospitals.

Akima among top black British businesspeople

kit@southwarknews.co.uk An East Dulwich woman has been nominated for the black British business awards.

Akima Paul Lambert is a lawyer at Hogan Lovells, a prominent City law firm, where she represents companies who are in dispute with other corporations and governments. She also does pro-bono work, like helping set up a south London football league for disabled children.

Akima, who is one of 39 nominees, said that she thinks the awards “play an important part in redressing the

Akima added that it wasn’t enough to focus on racial justice alone. “I feel strongly about social mobility too. White working class kids don’t have the same role models either... balance” and helping black people establish themselves more in corporate and commercial settings.

“I feel it’s very important for the generation growing up, we don’t see the representation enough, so this award is important. My son has no black teachers, not enough black role models.”

But Akima added that it wasn’t enough to focus on racial justice alone. “I feel strongly about social mobility too. White working class kids don’t have the same role models either.

I believe it’s needed. Until we have a society where young people can see people that are like them in important positions, we will continue to struggle.”

Akima was born and grew up on the small Caribbean island of Grenada. After school she won a scholarship to study in the UK and landed a place to read Law at Clare College, Cambridge. The move from sunny, laid-back Grenada to a cold and windy Cambridge autumn was a challenge at first.

“It was the shock of a lifetime,” she said. “It was so cold and dark. I had been to Cambridge in summer before when it was warmer.

“In my really blase way. I didn’t have any aspiration, I simply saw another newspaper article about another girl who had got into Cambridge. I was flying off to the UK and I emailed Cambridge to say ‘I will be there, do you want to interview me?’ They said yes and I got in.

“When I started studying I was ill-prepared, I didn’t even have a proper winter coat. But it wasn’t just the weather that was a shock, it was how traditional everything was.

“Of course I managed to adapt, but for the first few months I didn’t like it at all. Some of the girls made a big effort to encourage me to try different things. I joined a few societies and I was fine.”

After Cambridge, Akima moved to Paris for more studying before coming to London.

She now has dual citizenship. The difference between Grenada, a majority-black country, and her new city was also stark at first, she said.

“There was a different sense of what it meant to be black when I moved to the UK,” she said. “I never felt like a minority growing up - we had a black prime minister, a black police chief. Now in the UK there was a different expectation on me.

Akima added that when she moved to the UK she felt pressure to do well to defy “selflimiting” stereotypes about black people in the UK. “There are so few of you [in a corporate situation] so you feel you have to do well. And that’s a lot of pressure on young shoulders.”

“When I was starting off as a young lawyer you’re often the only black woman in the room.

You’re placed in a situation where you’re not the same as others and there’s definitely a psychological shift that happens.”

Despite the struggles and prejudices faced by many black people in the UK, as in other countries, Akima said she is not defeatist.

“Someone told me the analogy once that ‘a pig born in a stable isn’t a horse’. I found that so jarring. We are British and it’s important that we feel British.

“British can mean different things, and different colours, different views. I like my cup of tea, I like my theatre. I like literature, there’s a lot about England that I celebrate purposefully and with intention. I think it’s very important to create a sense of national pride that doesn;t have a negative connotation. There’s a lot of work to be done but there are many things in this country that need to be celebrated.”

Akima has been nominated in the professional services category, one of twelve separate awards. Winners for each category, as well as the overall black British businessperson of the year, will be announced on October 7.

The new site comes after the closure of the testing centre at Peckham Pulse last Sunday, August 1.

You can book a time slot at Burgess Park if you have a high temperature, new continuous cough or loss or change to your sense of taste or smell.

Anyone with one or more of these symptoms should book a test at nhs. uk/coronavirus or by calling 119.

The new site is situated so it is easily accessible without a car.

Those being tested will be required to follow public health measures, including social distancing, not travelling by taxi or public transport, practising good personal hygiene and wearing a face covering throughout, including while travelling to and from the testing centre.

Anyone testing positive for the virus in England will be contacted

by NHS Test and Trace to help them trace their contacts.

This will help to identify whom they may have been in close contact with, protecting others from further transmission.

Close contacts of those testing positive will also hear from NHS Test and Trace, asking them to stay at home for ten days to prevent them from unknowingly spreading the virus. They will be advised to also book a test if they develop symptoms.

CARNIVAL is back in spite of the pandemic

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The legendary Bermondsey Carnival is back this year in a slightly smaller form after a year off during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Anyone can come down to Southwark Park on Saturday August 14 from 12pm6pm for free to enjoy music, a funfair, food, drink, family activities and other stalls at Bermondsey Bitesize, which organiser Russell Dryden says strips back the carnival to its essential parts.

Music will be provided by reggae band Indika, fronted by Bermondsey man Phillip Poleon, local rock covers group Redriffe, and Unity Music Arts Team, a collection of student and graduate musicians from top London performing arts schools who play a

range of different styles and genres.

Russell, a musician himself, runs the Blue Bermondsey business improvement district (BID), which recently led the refurbishment of the Blue market, so is well established in the local area. He has been involved in the Carnival for years, but this year the Blue Bermondsey BID took over the organisation of the event from Southwark Council.

“We’re going to run it as a community event led by the community, obviously still with support from the council.

It was meant to happen last year but obviously the Carnival was cancelled.

“With us in charge, hopefully we can grow the event in the future.

With the growth in population, with developments like the Biscuit Factory and Canada Water, there’s a real opportunity there to make this into something really big, while still keeping that community feel.”

With ‘Freedom Day’ and the end of legal Covid restrictions only confirmed last month, this year’s Carnival could only be announced at a relatively late date. Russell said he had worked hard to pull the event together, as it is

“We’re looking forward to having it back on,” he said. “We feel it’s so important that it goes ahead in the spirit of community, reconciliation and togetherness. Some people can’t afford to go on holiday, but people deserve to have something they can do to get away from the day-to-day. It’s a shared experience, people from all kinds of background get involved.”

The Carnival has a history stretching back to 1900, during the second Boer War, when the Daily Telegraph launched a charitable fund to support the wives and orphans of soldiers killed in battle. The Bermondsey Carnival

was set up to raise money for this fund and soon became an annual event.

It continued through World Wars, the Great Depression, and different generations of Bermondsey residents coming and going - before petering out in the 1980s.

But, on a late summer’s evening at Southwark Park Road’s the Ancient Foresters pub in 1996, two local residents, Mick Wilmer and Mac Clague, reminisced about the good old days of the Carnival. And, after receiving support from The Friends of Southwark Park, local councillors and later Russell’s organisation Bermondsey Beat, the Carnival was

back on the agenda. It relaunched in 1997 and has been an annual event again ever since, until 2020.

Russell said the event was now perhaps even more important than ever and has a role to play in reuniting the community, and neighbours who may not have seen each other for a long time.

“Come along and support the Carnival - it’s our event,” he said. “The more people come to the event, the more of these we can have and the more fun it will be.”

“In the wake of everything that went on last year, not just Covid, but the protests and the riots too, we need this.”

Regge band Indika set to headline

The leader of the top-billed band at the Bermondsey Carnival has paid tribute to “his best day of the year ever”.

Local man Phillip Poleon, who is the band leader and musical director of reggae band Indika, said: “It’s the first gig back after Covid, so it feels apt to be playing at home. Bermondsey is the gig for me. It’s the people who see me every day on the street.

Indika, which is made up of a revolving cast of musicians, formed in 2005 and has played with artists like Levi Roots and Lee “Scratch” Perry.

The band has a double album on the way, Phillip said, but has so far resisted creating an online presence. Philip said Indika would get on the internet, but he enjoyed getting work through local word of mouth.

Phillip mostly grew up in Nunhead but moved to Bermondsey about twenty years ago and said it feels like home now.

“Bermondsey’s changed from the ‘folklore’ that it had in earlier times.

Now the pandemic might even have made it a better place because everyone had to muck in and stick together, even a joke and a hello. Now I walk the streets and people ask me if I’m alright.

People acknowledge you. I’ve felt more togetherness in the community.

All the shop owners, all the regulars have a chat. It’s a good community, it’s growing, it’s developing and it’s progressing.”

Philip urged everyone in the area to come to the free event on Saturday.

“It’s a chance to come together.

‘Comings together’ can never be enough, especially since we’ve been deprived of them. It’s okay for the big

bands and acts who can set up and people pay loads of money to go see them “But there are distinct parts of our communities that don’t have the money to do that. This is free, this is on

their doorstep, it’s around their own people - it’s important. Any event that brings people together is important.”

Indika will be playing from 4.456pm on Saturday, alongside legendary reggae singer Winston Reedy.

The coach of Kye Whyte explains why Burgess Park’s track has the winning formula

The coach of Peckham’s Olympic silver medallist BMXer Kye Whyte has said staff and riders at the Burgess Park club “haven’t stopped celebrating” since his unexpected result last month.

And Michael Pusey, also known as CK Flash, said Kye’s second-place finish in Tokyo had meant as many as 40 per cent more kids were coming down to the track just off Albany Road.

“We might have to look at asking for an extra day to accommodate all the new kids that are coming to the taster sessions.

“Kids can see it’s a way out - they look at Kye and see he’s making a living from it. It’s not just kids from Peckham that are looking to Kye, it’s all over. People from other places in the UK and even abroad. You could say he has the whole world on his shoulders.

“It’s not just him that’s a role model but the whole family, his brother was also world number three. The whole family has a history of doing well. It shows that families that can struggle and manage to keep it together, with a little bit of help from people like me and obviously from Southwark Council.”

Michael was a BMX racer in his youth himself before going into DJing, where he has worked with rappers like Dizzee Rascal, Wiley and Lethal Bizzle. He said he was asked to come back and coach BMX in Peckham. Michael was awarded an MBE in 2016 for his services to young people in south London.

He credits the success of his club to its strong sense of discipline and community.

“When I came in, I said ‘If you do exactly what I tell you to do I can take you to the top, I can take you to America, to Europe’. I didn’t over spoil them, I kept them hungry.

“All kids are trouble, from the littlest to the biggest. You’ve got the older ones that just need direction, they can end up in trouble if they’re not given the right structure and guidance.

“Peckham BMX has a constitution of good behaviour - you’re not going to do what you do when you’re at school, or at home. Our formula works. People just know that we have a structure, like you’ve got to be on time - if you’re one minute late, you might be sent home. You train as a group, as a team.

Everybody spurs each other on.

“We’re like the film 300, we go like the Spartans. That’s why we get results, we have structure unlike other clubs. We also encourage healthy diets. We’re a little bit of a cut above the rest.”

I didn’t spoil them, I kept them hungry was greeted with rapturous acclaim by friends, family and other members of the local community as he made a triumphant homecoming to Peckham last week.

And he said that much of his success was due to the hours he put in at the £1.2m Burgess Park track, which was paid for in part by Southwark’s 2012 Olympic Legacy Fund. The track was launched in 2013.

Since then Southwark Council has allowed the Peckham BMX Club free use of the track, while continuing to maintain it fully, meaning coaches do not have to worry about utility fees or having to pay to keep the track up.

Although other children and young people who started out at Peckham BMX track have been chosen for the national team previously, Kye is the first Olympian.

Kye said: “I owe a lot of this to the

Peckham BMX time I spent as a kid at Peckham BMX Track. Training at the track taught me the skills I needed to become a professional BMXer, and I also made some friends for life. I encourage everyone to give it a go – it’s suitable for all abilities and the adrenaline rush is incredible.”

He added in an Instagram post: “I went with targets of getting BMX on the map and getting our first medal I promised a lot of people something special to bring home and I did ENGLISH bmx has never been better”.

The council is also encouraging people of all ages to get involved in BMX activities at the track. There are

sessions for novices and people at an intermediate level, women-only events, private hire and birthday parties and school holiday clubs.

Kye won the silver in Tokyo last month despite being ranked twelfth in the world before the Games. He finished an agonising 0.114 seconds behind Dutch rider Niek Kimmann in the final. He finished fifth at the 2019 World Championships before suffering a serious injury.

“The medal is flipping heavy,” he said after the Tokyo final. “My neck’s aching. It nearly slipped out of my hands. It means everything to me.

“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

It is pretty hard to get to the Olympics in the first place. To do well and get a medal, it is special.”

He added: “I reckon [his brother, former World Championship bronze medallist] Tre might cry. My dad definitely did cry and my mum cried too.

When I get back it will be crazy.

“My parents played a huge part, helping me and my brother go to every race even when times were hard.

“Without the lottery funding I would probably be in the bike shop and training afterward – it would be a big loss.

“Since I was 12 years old, this has been my dream. This is where I’ve been destined to go. Now I’m here, I’m only going to try harder and get faster to win the Olympics.

Others in the area added their well-wishes after the event. Harriet Harman, Labour MP for Camberwell and Peckham, Kye’s constituency, said on Twitter: “Huge congratulations!

St Peter’s church in Walworth also rang a special ‘quarter-peal’ of bells in honour of Kye’s achievement.

Kye was not the only British BMX racer to reach the podium in Tokyo.

Bethany Shriever from Essex won a gold medal in the women’s racing event, and Kye celebrated her victory by lifting her up in the air in joy.

Dulwich olympic diver studied for a-levels by the pool

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk An Olympian who celebrated getting her A Levels this week has praised Alleyn’s school for helping her to achieve her dreams.

Eden Cheng took home her first major medal in 2018 when she was just fifteen, after winning gold at the European Championships in the 10 metre Platform Synchro with her partner Lois Toulson.

While competing in this year’s Olympics she was also juggling her A Levels in maths, biology and PE at Alleyn’s in Dulwich.

“I am not going to lie, it has been challenging, it has not been easy, it is like having two full time jobs,” she conceded.

“So when I am at school I really put on my thinking cap and try and put everything that is from the pool away and focus on my academics, and when I am at the pool I am thinking about only diving, and not trying to think or worry about deadlines or assessments or what I need to do.

“Alleyn's School has been really supportive all through my journey from year seven.”

She says as soon as the possibility of competing in Tokyo came up, she and the school came up with a plan to keep her education on track.

“The school and the teachers have

been so supportive, have given me extra to work on and have made sure all the materials are available for me when I am across the world,” she said.

“In COVID times it was even a little easier because everything was online and I didn't have to be in the classroom to absorb everything.

“The recordings of the lessons were very useful because if I am in a lesson online while I am at the pool, it is disruptive, so having the recordings I can pause, go back, rewatch.

“And the level of detail in the online lessons meant it was as if I was in the classrooms.

“At school it felt like a community and as though I was still part of something, and even when I was away the teachers would still be asking me how I was, if I needed any help.

“They would always help me out with having tests arranged so that I could do them online, via Teams or Microsoft forms, that was very helpful.”

Eden and her partner finished seventh at Tokyo. Despite not achieving the result they hoped for, Eden and Lois still have much to celebrate. She plans to spend time with her family, including her sister, to celebrate both her Team GB performance and A Level results.

“All in all it has been quite a journey but I have to say it has been hard, a lot of late nights, sometimes tears, but if I didn't have the support from

Mrs Lunnon and the school, the staff I don't think I would be here or be able to have so much success in my academic career as in my sporting career,” she adds.

Longer term Eden is hoping to study in the USA at the University of California in September 2022. In the meantime, diving will come first.

“In this coming year I am going to focus on my diving a little bit more and try to establish myself as more of an individual diver and also there are a couple of major events this year, the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham and also the World Championships which will be taking place in Japan.”

Peckham sprinter picks up bronze with her london pals

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Peckham’s Imani-Lara Lansiquot won bronze with fellow London sprinters Dina Asher-Smith, Daryll Neita, Asha Philip in the 4x100m relay at the Olympics.

It was the first time the 23-year-old had represented her country at the games.

It follows a successful lockdown for the former St Joseph’s Primary pupil, who went on to join Coloma Covent Girls’ School and Trinity Sixth Form College in Croydon.

In 2020 she graduated with a

psychology degree from King’s College London and also won her first ever British title at the national championship 100m race that September.

Celebrating her win, ImaniLara tweeted: “We did it! Olympic medallists! We waited five years for this moment.

“We are just four ordinary girls from London with big dreams. If you can see it you can be it. Speechless right now.”

Among those sharing their congratulations were London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who said: “The London promise in action: if you work hard, with a helping hand you can achieve anything.”

Freedom for Bankside’s Tom?

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Veteran LGBT campaigner Peter Tatchell has backed a campaign to give Tom Daley the Freedom of the Borough of Southwark after winning gold at Tokyo.

At this year’s Olympics Daley became the first British diver to win four medals after taking home gold for the 10m platform diving competition.

Daley has lived in Southwark since 2014 and is currently based in Bankside.

As well as being an active voice for LGBT rights, Daley has also supported many charities and events in the borough and helped promote more people to get into sport.

Southwark Liberal Democrats have now started a campaign to have him awarded the Freedom of Southwark,

like footballer Jadon Sancho.

Councillor Victor Chamberlain described Daley as ‘a true inspiration to millions’.

“His achievements in diving are super admirable, but so too is the way he promotes equality and diversity.

“As one of the UK’s first openly gay Olympic champions he is showing that any LGBTQ+ person can achieve anything. We’re so proud to call him our neighbour.”

Cllr Adele Morris added: “Tom is a proud Bankside resident and strong supporter of our community.

“He recently opened the Marlborough Sports Ground and even sent a message of support for the Bankside Great Get Together from Tokyo!

“I really hope Southwark Council will reciprocate the love and give Tom the recognition he deserves.”

Link Age Southwark has launched its Bloomin’ Lovely Summer Appeal to raise £6,000 so it can deliver plants and flowers to isolated, older people across the borough.

The charity first started the floral doorstep deliveries during lockdown and, after having such a delighted response from OAPs, has decided to make the campaign an annual appeal.

Chief executive Sophie Wellings said: “This was such a lovely project for us to work on during a very challenging time for our service users.

“So many of us found sanctuary in nature during the periods of lockdown, the plants and flowers we delivered were a simple but tangible pleasure.

“Our aim was to bring colour and charm to service users’ lives and we hope to do the same again this year.”

The appeal will run until Monday, August 23. Anyone who donates can also leave a message which will be included with the gift.

Flat Iron Square raises £20,000 for homeless charity with Euro Final table auction

Police officers based in Camberwell joined the ‘Family Mile Event’ at Burgess Park last Sunday.

A popular food, drinks and music venue in Borough raised nearly £20,000 for a homeless charity by auctioning off tables for the Euro 2020 final.

The event aimed to get families active and help encourage children to enjoy staying healthy.

Along with craft sessions, a signposted family walking route and free personal training session, there were community stalls from and the opportunity to meet and greet local service people including the police.

Dedicated ward officer Buddhi Munasinghe said: “This was a great opportunity for us to engage with our communities. The officers were on hand to give advice on a wide range of subjects and to speak with interested members of the public about new recruitment opportunities offered by the Met Police.

“The Family Mile offers a starting point to a healthier and happier life, whether it’s walking the dog, pushing the pram, scooting with the kids, or simply walking together as family.”

Great Get Together included celebs and their dogs A star-studded party came to the streets of Southwark at the start of this month as The Great Get Together Bankside returned inperson.

Now in its fifth year, The Great Get Together Bankside is part of a nationwide series of activities to commemorate Jo Cox MP, who was killed in 2016.’

Due to Covid restrictions, the event took place later than usual and was arranged to coincide with the arrival of over sixty bike riders who cycled 280 miles from Batley and Spen in Yorkshire - Jo’s former constituency, now held by her sister Kim Leadbeater - as part of the “Jo Cox Way”. The riders ended their five-day journey in Bankside and helped kick-off the Great Get Together.

Kim and her parents, Jean and Gordon Leadbeater, joined the Mayor and Mayoress of Southwark to give a rousing welcome to the riders.

Kim said: “It’s a very emotional day but we’ve developed a really great relationship with the people here in Bankside and appreciate so much how they’ve continued to host a fantastic Great Get Together this year.”

Surprise special guest Jackie Weaver - of Handforth Parish Council fame – appeared via the big screen to open the event officially, alongside the Mayor, Cllr Barrie Hargrove. Jackie was joined virtually by Olympic diver Tom Daley, BBC broadcaster Martha Kearney, Met Police Commissioner Cressida Dick, LBC broadcaster Iain Dale and others to

show their support for the event.

Festivities included the dog show the Bankside “Bark-Off” with broadcaster Anna Webb; Bake-Off; Wacky Races; and a range of music, street performances, creative installations, and stalls from community groups.

Speaking about the event, Amir Eden, who leads Living Bankside, the group that organised the event said: “Delighted, although a bit daunted, to have taken on the mantle of hosting The Great Get Together Bankside this year.

Living Bankside took up the challenge of hosting the event following a number of conversations with residents and others...and we were delighted with the support and encouragement of so many to make today happen.”

Flat Iron Square on Union Street raised £19,300 for Only A Pavement Away, a charity that supports people facing homelessness, prison leavers, and veterans by helping them into careers in the hospitality industry.

The company raised the money by auctioning off three tables for the tournament on July 11, when England lost to Italy on penalties.

Matt Dockray, the UK operations manager for Flat Iron Square’s management company Venue Group, said: “As demand grew and the tournament progressed, we decided to make sure that we focus on our community rather than capitalise for our own gain. With that in mind, we auctioned off a table experience and approached a London based charity, ‘Only A Pavement Away’. They support homeless groups, veterans and ex-offenders to establish themselves into hospitality careers.

“By the end of the tournament, we were able to donate nearly £20,000 to help support the charity to chance lives and become the hospitality partner that can support those around us to achieve the career and success they deserve.”

Guy’s programme to encourage people with learning difficulties to get vaccine Nurses from Guy’s and St Thomas’s hospitals are helping people with learning difficulties get the Covid-19 vaccine.

People who have learning difficulties are sadly much more likely to die from a Covid-19 related illness than others. One study showed that some 24 per cent of all deaths of people with learning difficulties last year were related to coronavirus.

This makes it all the more important for people with learning difficulties to be vaccinated, to protect them and their families. But the anxiety than can be brought on by these conditions can make it difficult for people to get the jab.

James Beveridge, 55, from Brockley in south-east London, has a mild learning disability and was supported to get his first dose of the coronavirus vaccine in June 2021, by Guy’s and St Thomas’ specialist learning disabilities nurse Lee Moore and student nurse Kayode Aderinwale from London Southbank University.

They taught James how to inflate a blood pressure cuff comfortably and safely to help people to relax.

James said: “I felt very nervous, I don’t like needles. It was good to have someone to talk to about the vaccine.”

me a picture of people getting the jab. We used a blood pressure pump (inflating and deflating it) to relax me before taking the jab.”

Lee helped James to repeat the process several times, up until the date of the vaccination. Once inside Lewisham Hospital, James, who was with his aunt, used the technique immediately before

taking the vaccine.

“I watched a video of the FA cup final and within 5 minutes the needle was in,” he said. “I’ve had no problems since.”

James says he is confident that he will be able to receive his second dose of the vaccine in August with Lee and Kayode’s support and without being sedated.

Lee said: “What we’ve found is that a lot of people who develop phobias around having jabs do so because of distressing childhood experiences [around needles].

By getting our methods right people like James will be more likely to come back for their second dose with a lower degree of anxiety than before.”

The team of nurses and therapists from Guy’s and St Thomas’ Adults with Learning Disabilities service support GPs to carry out home vaccinations and encourage people with learning disabilities to attend vaccination hubs. The team, who cover Lambeth, Southwark and Lewisham, also carried out virtual ‘welfare’ checks for more than 150 people during the first and

second waves of the pandemic to support people in their own homes.

Lee said: “We were calling some of our most vulnerable people every day, who are living alone and with no other family members to support them, to avoid a crisis.”

“Suddenly the rules that we’ve lived by, and we applied day to day had changed. For some people with learning disabilities this change can be even more challenging. For example, they may find communication more difficult to understand. We use video calls to meet and help familiarise people with what we look like without personal protective equipment.”

“It’s all about making reasonable adjustments to empower people with learning disabilities so they are able to receive the vaccines.”

NHS staff have sent out a “critical” call for black people to donate blood to help with mounting cases of sickle cell disease.

There are currently nearly 6,500 black blood donors in London, but the NHS wants to recruit another 16,000 from the black and mixed black communities this year.

Sickle cell is one of the fastest growing genetic conditions in the UK and can be debilitating, with sufferers often needing frequent blood transfusions. Black people are much more likely to be born with the disease - and to have the rare Ro blood type that can help sufferers.

Giving blood takes about an hour, and each time you give you could be saving three lives.

Colin Anderson, community & engagement Lead at NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “The numbers of blood donors needed from Black African and Black Caribbean communities show just how important our appeal is for new donors to make an appointment to give blood today. There are very real people behind these numbers - they are children,

Colin Anderson adults and their families who face painful struggles with life-threatening sickle cell and uncertain futures.

“But they are also the donors who are doing something amazing – giving blood takes just one hour and can save three lives.

“We know demand for black blood donors will continue to rise as the number of people with sickle cell grows but we have a chance now to close the gap and help our friends, neighbours and communities battling this disease.”

The number of black donors has

increased in recent years by around 29 per cent.

Saturday June 19 saw the highest number of blood donations from black donors in a single day for 22 years with 223 donations. This came alongside a

special blood donation event, which was part of the United by Blood campaign led by black health charity African Caribbean Leukaemia Trust (ACLT), to encourage more black people to donate in memory of Evan Nathan Smith, a 21-year-old man

out consultant head and neck surgeon Ricard Simo and consultant plastic and reconstructive surgeon Paul Roblin for particular praise.

“To the NHS Staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London. I cannot adequately express my gratitude,” Welshman Lee says in the notes.

“Special thanks to Ricard Simo and Paul Roblin, who were there overseeing everything for 11 years. You made me feel safe in your hands and your compassionate and caring nature was deeply appreciated, as is the phenomenal expertise of yourselves and your whole team. I would not be alive to make this album, were it not for you.”

The surgeons had to remove more than half of Lee’s upper palate bone, gums and teeth to take out the tumour - in a 21-hour

operation.

Then they added in part of his fibula - a shin bone - alongside the fat and skin from the same area. Months later surgeons put in dental implants.

“The whole area of my face was rebuilt using bone and veins from my lower left leg. Afterwards, I couldn’t move my mouth, I couldn’t speak as I had a tracheostomy.

“I was just starting to establish myself as a singer and musician, and this diagnosis then surgery was an enormous blow.

“I was determined I was going to sing again, but there were times I was in tremendous pain, physically and emotionally. The surgeries changed how I looked, and I wondered if I would ever look normal again.

“Now, the reconstruction is hardly noticeable – it’s amazing.”

Lee worked with several speech therapists to begin to talk again, but it was years before he began to sing, with encouragement from his friend Bonnie Tyler. She recommended her voice coach James Windsor.

Lee added: “I told James – I bet it’s the first time you’ve worked with someone’s leg!”

“I decided to write an album about my experiences to explain some of what has happened to me. It’s a celebration of relationships and the potential to create positive change.

“I wouldn’t be alive if it wasn’t for this extraordinary team of people.”

Face cancer patient releases album to thank ‘extraordinary’ staff

A musician who lost and regained the ability to sing after his face had to be rebuilt following a cancer diagnosis has released an album to thank the Guy’s Hospital staff who saved his life.

Doctors found a rare tumour called a chondrosarcoma on Lee Michael Walton’s face and carried out several complex operations to remove it fifteen years ago.

The surgery left Lee, now 47, unable to speak at first but he underwent a lot of speech therapy that helped him find his voice again.

Now Streatham resident Lee has released a new album, with some of the proceeds to go to the Guy’s doctors whom he credits with saving his life.

The album notes for the new release, called The Beginning is Here, single

very long and difficult road to recovery. We hope his album is a great success.”

The Blue and what the Mayor is doing to tackle the economy

I

was so pleased to see the recent unveiling of the new clocktower at the Blue Market.

The Blue is not only a local landmark, but a community hub and with £2 million of investment from the Mayor’s Good Growth Fund and further support from Southwark Council, it has undergone a significant transformation in recent years.

South Bermondsey councillors Leo Pollak, Leanne Werner and Sunny Lambe deserve special credit on account of their passion for revamping the Blue and close engagement with local residents and business owners throughout the process.

We are all hoping to see the local economy lift over the next few months.

At the start of the summer, the Mayor launched his ‘Let’s Do London’ domestic tourism campaign to attract people from inside and outside the capital back to many of our star attractions. From The Globe to Borough Market, we are

lucky to have some of the very best of these on our doorstep.

I have also asked the mayor for an update on the campaign since its launch, and he revealed that people who are familiar with it are almost three times as likely to have visited London.

I recently met with the fantastic organisation, You be You, which operates out of Southwark, and heard about their work in schools with pupils and parents to challenge gender stereotypes and empower the next generation.

It’s so important for our longterm economic recovery that young Londoners are equipped with the skills they need for highquality, future-proof jobs.

But in the shorter-term, we are facing the prospect of a surge in redundancies as the furlough scheme winds down. There are many things the government could do to prevent this and one of them is to accelerate their job

creation and retraining schemes.

The government’s Kickstart jobs scheme, which is aimed at 16-24 years is still struggling to get off the ground after it was launched last January. I have now asked the Department for Work and Pensions for an update on how many job openings it has helped to fill in Southwark so far.

On a more positive note, it has been great to see the Skills Centre in Rotherhithe open up a free three-week training scheme in construction skills for local people. The CEO, John Howlin, is particularly encouraging more women to sign-up to the scheme.

This project will not only be a step towards addressing the lack of women represented in the construction industry, but the wider deficit in the workforce left behind by Brexit.

If we are going to tackle London’s housing and affordability crisis, we will need all hands-on deck.

ast month I wrote about England’s football team inspiring a generation.

Over the last month, Team GB have done the same at the Tokyo Olympics — including our own Southwark resident Tom Daley bringing home gold alongside Matty Lee for their incredible synchronised 10 metre diving. Congratulations to them and all of our Olympics team. You are all inspirational.

I am proud to support calls from my Borough & Bankside Liberal Democrat councillor colleagues — Victor, David and Adele — who have called on Southwark Council to award Tom with the ‘Freedom of the Borough’ in recognition of his Olympic achievement and his work inspiring young people, including especially those who identify as LGBT+.

Bringing home the gold takes years of planning, hard work and dedication to see through to delivery.

look I see plans — but after eleven years of Labour-administration, what I don’t see is the work or the steady delivery to improve our borough.

Whether it’s the Borough Plan (renamed from the Council Plan), the New Southwark Plan, a Movement Plan (normally called a Transport Plan), a Climate Change action plan, an Air Quality plan, a Housing Delivery Plan, a Tree Planting plan, a Biodiversity Plan, a Youth Fairer Future Plan and the list goes on — what we don’t see is results.

Sadly, these are not ambitious plans that will deliver for Southwark.

Instead, after eleven years under Labour’s control at the council, we see a borough that has a housing waiting list of 15,000+ people, nearly 50 per cent of which are families with children, a net loss of 2000+ council homes, more empty private homes than council homes built (less than 1000), no Santander cycling stations south of Elephant and Castle, cutting down mature trees, and 200 people

dying prematurely every year because of local air quality. Sadly for our young people we have some of the worst youth crime rates in London.

As we saw with Tom and Matty’s teamwork and that of Team GB, good plans do work. Before 2010, when the Liberal Democrats ran the council, we commissioned a Recycling Centre on the Old Kent Road that improved recycling tenfold and saw continued improvement for four years.

But under Labour, recycling rates have stalled and are now falling.

And what of their broken promises?

‘Protecting Green Spaces’ was a promise in the 2010 Southwark Labour manifesto and reiterated in the 2014 manifesto. But now in 2021, rather than protecting them, Labour is choosing to build on our scarce green spaces across our borough.

As we approach the elections in May 2022, Labour must be held to account for their dither and delay, their broken promises and their lack of delivery. Southwark deserves better.

I don’t want to labour on about the climate crisis and all the doom and gloom of extreme temperatures, flooding, food scarcity, disease and society breakdown but it’s slowly arriving. This letter from the councillor reflects the (im)maturity of thought and priority our Labour elected officials have in addressing the crisis. They do not see climate change as the real emergency that needs action now. To get things done quickly it has to be top down.

Instead they will delegate it away to committees that will take ages and have no power - per “begin the process of establishing a Citizen’s Jury”.

Investing in young people pays real dividends

T

he news of another round of excellent A Level results this week comes shortly after the outstanding Olympic result of Peckham’s Kye Whyte in the BMX racing at the Olympics in Tokyo, among other Olympians in the borough.

Both show a different side of Southwark’s young people from the image that we are used to talking about. Sadly, the media is often forced to report on violence against young people, frequently carried out by other young people. That is not to say news outlets should not be covering these stories - it is important that the media reflects reality, and the reality is that young people can too easily get caught up in gang violence.

But another truth is that there are many young people in our borough forging paths to success.

It is a cliché to say that the last eighteen months have been difficult for everyone, but it is perhaps most true for children. To be stripped of a social life and daily routine when you are still developing as a person is tough, and still may have unforeseen consequences. But for now we should praise their efforts in achieving these results - as well as the great support from their parents, teachers and Southwark Council.

St Saviour’s and St Olave’s singled out families for praise when congratulating students on A Level results this week: recognition of the often-astonishing sacrifices made by families to support their children’s education, especially in the pandemic. Teachers, too, have adapted remarkably well to a whole new way of working. Neither should we forget the efforts of the council to raise money for laptops for children studying remotely, nor anyone who gave to the fundraiser.

Kye Whyte said that he credited his success to the work of Peckham BMX coaches and the funding given by the council to help set up and maintain the track as part of the London Olympic legacy nearly ten years ago. Perhaps the lesson we should take from him and from our successful students is that young people’s success most often needs long-term investment: in money, in time and in care.

record a level results in most turbulent of times

Successive lockdowns, remote learning and the personal impact of COVID-19, which has affected so many families, changed their day-today lives beyond recognition since March 2020.

Across the country students have achieved record levels of top grades which few could argue are anything other than indicative of the determination and efforts of all in the classroom - whether in person or online - including staff, pupils and the parents who helped with home learning.

Southwark Council says early indications show improvements across all grade boundaries in the borough’s schools, with a significant uplift in students achieving the highest grades of A* and A. The overall percentage of entries achieving a pass (A*-E) result remains unchanged from last year.

In a change from last year, these grades have been awarded from teacher assessments against

criteria provided by exam boards, rather than the government’s much-maligned algorithm.

Cllr Jasmine Ali, deputy leader and cabinet member for children, young people and education, said: “Southwark can be immensely proud of its young people, as we welcome a set of truly remarkable A-level results.

“Despite the unrelenting pressure and disruption of the past eighteen months, Southwark students have performed exceptionally well, which is testament to all the hard work of teachers, pupils and parents right across the borough.

“We know the pandemic has brought great uncertainty for many school leavers thinking about their next steps.

“This is why we’re linking young people in the borough with local opportunities that will help them access further education, jobs, training and work experience that reflect their ambitions and hard work. We want our young people to get the start they need to fulfil their potential, having achieved such fantastic exam results.”

In a press release issued today, the school said: “Staff have gone above and beyond throughout the process, and families have demonstrated enormous resilience to support their children's education through a very challenging time.”

One star performer is Juliette Agyeman, who is going to read History at Pembroke College, Cambridge after achieving three A*s and a bursary to support her study.

"I'm so happy my hard work paid off,” she said. “I listened to my teachers and went to them whenever I needed help; they were happy to support."

Two others to achieve three A*s are Selina Chenh and Jhuliana Castro. They are both going to the University of Bristol to study psychology.

Jhuliana said: "The feeling of anxiety has been replaced by excitement.

“I could not be more thankful for the journey I have been on; Walworth Academy has been great at supporting me."

Mohammed Maruf Chowdury, who achieved three A grades, will be going to King’s College London to study International Development.

The school says it has also seen ‘exceptional results’ from the vocational side.

Olympic diver among Alleyn’s success

Humdan Baluch achieved the clean sweep of three marks at Distinction* in his BTec in applied science.

He will embark on a mechanical engineering course next year.

Also from the academy’s applied science course, Natasha Wabulo will go on to study biomedical science at Middlesex University, having achieved one distinction* and two further distinctions.

"Words aren't enough to describe how happy I feel,” she said upon opening her results envelope.

Staff were on site as pupils picked up their results in person, with headteacher Jane Lunnon paying tribute to their hard work and resilience during a very tough academic year.

“I am so very proud of all our boys and girls, who have demonstrated such steadfastness in the face of sustained uncertainty,” she said.

“Their achievements are fantastic, fitting and fully deserved, and we celebrate the determination with which they have tackled their assessments.

“Behind the topsy-turvy circumstances, their hard work was constant, and it is their tenacity, ultimately, that has allowed them to evidence, so robustly, exactly what they are capable of.

“We congratulate them all and thank the staff who

worked so hard throughout last year, to ensure that their learning was not unduly compromised by the pandemic.”

Eden achieved a A*, A*, A and B grades after studying by turns in classrooms, on planes and at pool sides in order to balance the international diving career.

She took home a silver medal at the 2021 European Diving Championships and competed at the Tokyo Olympics.

Meanwhile, Louis Partridge combined his A Level studies with a career as an actor. He appears as the Sex Pistol’s Sid Vicious in an upcoming Danny Boyle series.

Dr Rob Atkinson, head of Alleyn’s upper school said: “We are delighted for all our students, and grateful to the wider staff body and parents that provided such dedicated support throughout their journey.

“The vast majority now progress on to their firstchoice university and specialist courses in the UK and overseas.

UTC students defy expectations

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Students at South Bank UTC were delighted to have beaten their expected A Level grades this year.

Grades came in at an average of C+ in 2021 at the Brixton Hill school, which is supported by London South Bank University and specialises in technical education in areas like engineering and health.

Results in mathematics, biology and chemistry were even better, with an average grade of B. Technical results in BTEC Business and extended certificates in engineering were also strong, South Bank UTC said.

Outstanding individual performers included Christian Ancu, who scooped an A*AB in A Levels and a Distinction in BTEC engineering, Micah Salmon, who got A*A*A and Omar Bedward, who got an AB and Distinction* in BTEC engineering.

Some 18 per cent of leavers this year are going onto

Russell Group universities, and 18 per cent are going to London South Bank University.

Southbank UTC’s principal Austin Sheppard said: “We are so proud of all our Year 13 students at South Bank UTC and all they have overcome in the last two years on their way to securing excellent outcomes.

The determination of the young people and nurturing support of the staff have enabled students to reach their potential.

“We are very proud of the growing number of apprenticeships secured by our leavers, especially considering how competitive it is to secure these in the current economic climate. “Sixth Form Result Day is always an inspiring occasion,” Matt Jones said. “This year is not an exception.

“What the students achieved during a difficult time for them personally and for the country is extraordinary.

“It’s great to see so many of them secure high-quality destinations at either a top university or apprenticeship. I’d like to thank our students and adults at the academy for their commitment to ensuring that every student reaches their full potential.”

This year, 38 per cent of the academy’s year thirteen students will go on to study at a Russell Group university.

Ramon Vivasi said he was ‘overwhelmed’ to open his envelope. After gaining three D*s he is off to Nottingham Trent University to study accounting and finance.

“When I opened my results envelope, I was overwhelmed. Really surprised. I thought that maybe I would get one D*, but I got three! I am very happy,” he said.

“I started at Globe at year seven, but after secondary I left for a sixth form college.

“It wasn’t the right place for me. I came back to Globe after a few months there.

“Teacher support at Globe, especially during the lockdown, was essential. They were very hands on. It was definitely helpful.

My brother works in finance, and he was my inspiration to go into this pathway.”

Marin Dishkov gained four As in biology,

maths, physics and an extended project. He will go to University College London to study biomedical engineering.

“It feels good to receive these results, it’s been a long journey for me,” he said. “To be honest, I was expecting these results, but I didn’t want to jinx it, so I didn’t even say it to myself.

“I came to Ark Globe in year eight. I didn’t speak any English back then. I came from Bulgaria with my aunt and uncle. I worked very hard. I wasn’t the best student in Bulgaria and had to learn English first to achieve well here.

“I will study biomedical engineering at the UCL. I am so excited about it, I can’t wait.

“I want to work for a company which makes bionic prosthetics. I wanted to get into this career firstly because of my grandma, who lost her leg and had to wear plastic prosthetics. It wasn’t comfortable for her. Then I watched a TED talk, which was very inspirational.

“This person, who gave the talk, lost his leg too and made his own prosthetic leg and was able to climb a mountain after that. I would like to work hard to make disabled people abled. That’s my aspiration.

“My parents and siblings live in Bulgaria. I called them; they are all very happy for me.”

Twis Kehinde and Deborah Solowe are also both celebrating after achieving an A* and two As. Kehinde, who is off to UCL to study biochemistry, said: “I am happy and proud of myself,” she said. “I see with the grades that I got and that my hard work paid off. I was surprised, as I didn’t expect to get A* in biology.

“I am relieved that me and my sister both got the same results. In GCSEs one of us got a better result and we didn’t like it. I am very proud for both of us. It was a tough year. I don’t know how I did during the lockdown. I felt lost at the beginning of the first lockdown, but then I made a huge improvement. I am very grateful for the tiny space we created in our family’s living room with my sister.

“We live with our parents and two older brothers. We turned a tiny table into a workspace and it was in the same room with the TV. We sometimes had to ask our parents to turn the volume down. They were very understanding. I would like to thank our parents, brothers, and grandma for supporting us during the lockdown. Also, huge thank you to my sister. We supported each other, pushed each other and did revisions together.”

Safiya Behanzin gained three Bs in

chemistry, maths and physics and will soon take up a degree apprenticeship with the Bank of America, and study digital and tech solution at Ada National College for Digital Skills. “I feel ready for the business world,” she said.

“I chose a degree apprenticeship, because I thought that I would do better in the world of work. I like multitasking and doing different things. I worked through my A Levels, and I believe that it prepared me for the apprenticeship. I would like to see how the theory, what we learn during the degree, applies in actual situations.

“I am also excited to work in the tech industry, where there aren’t many women.

This is definitely a different pathway that I take as a woman, when I look at my family history. I hope that I progress in the business world and inspire young people.

Apprenticeship route is not spoken about enough.”

Level 3 BTEC grades achieved were A or A*.

Those celebrating today, after receiving their results via email, included Sahar Abedipour (A*A*A*A*), Christabel Amankwaa-Tonto (A*A*A), Grace Fitter (A*AA), Lois Stanley (A*A*A), Stella Steed (A*A*A*) and Merrie Woodcock (A*A*A*) who all gained places to study medicine.

Luna Santeusanio, who gained an ABC, is off to study veterinary science at the Royal Veterinary College.

Liv Ekdawi (A*A*A) is off to read English and Amber Forrester (A*A*A) is off to study human sciences, both at Oxford.

Rory Chappell (A*A*A*) is due to study history at Cambridge whilst Sarah Challen Flynn (A*A*A*) and Liam Winning (A*A*A*) both turned down their Cambridge offers and will be studying at Edinburgh instead.

Melanie Kirchner (A*A*A*A*) also turned down a Cambridge offer for natural sciences and will be continuing her studies in France.

In a statement the school also wishes to highlight the following students who “particularly impressed us with their

resilience in overcoming significant challenges during the lockdown periods” to gain first choice places: Dajean Bernard (BCC), Neneh Barrie (ABB), Hollie Vass (AAA), Nzube Uzoukwu (AAB) and Marcus Teigland Green (CCD).

The school says it is continuing to support the minority who are yet to confirm their places or next steps, or anyone looking for apprenticeships or to reapply through UCAS. Headteacher Christian Hicks said: “Once again, year thirteen has faced a set of circumstances that have created uncertainty and stress for them, and they have reacted with dignity and good grace.

“We are immensely proud of the many success stories today, which are a direct result of students' continued hard work over the past two years, where their learning has been significantly disrupted by the pandemic.

“It has been a difficult eighteen months for year thirteen, and many of the usual events and experiences that reflect the excitement and richness of life in the sixth form have sadly not happened.

“However, we all hope that the future looks brighter as we learn to live with COVID, and we wish them all the very best as they move on to the next stage of their careers, be that higher education, an apprenticeship or the world of work.”

Students at Harris Academy Bermondsey’s Sixth Form have been praised for their “really exceptional” A Level results this year, despite the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Students at Bermondsey's City of London Academy Southwark got "exceptional" marks in their A Levels this year, with more than 90 per cent of grades between A*-C.

Students achieved a 39 per cent pass rate in grades A-A*, 69 per cent pass rate in grades A*-B. At BTEC level, students got an 83% pass rate at DDD and above.

Several students were singled for special praise in the wake of their outstanding results.

Tremaine Sadipe received A*AA, securing himself a place at the prestigious Oxford University studying Biochemistry. He said: “The classroom environment is what motivated me. Every teacher here is passionate about about their subject and cares as much as we do, imparting their enthusiasm and excitement into every lesson. Without them, I wouldn’t have achieved what I did today. Going to Oxford University will be a big stepping stone for me - I can’t wait! With the exception of school trips, it will be the first time I will have been outside of London and I look forward to developing my passion for science.”

Highest ever number of Oxbridge places for St Thomas the Apostle school leavers

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk St Thomas the Apostle Sixth Form says it is ‘delighted’ with this year’s A Level results after a ‘difficult year’ and ‘unprecedented circumstances’.

Half this year’s leavers are going onto Russell Group universities. Among them are the school’s highest ever number of students with Oxbridge places.

Victor Alayande will be heading further afield to Davidson College and Bomi Akarakiri is off to Howard University.

In a statement published this morning, the school’s leaders confirmed that 62 per cent of all students achieved at least one A Level Grade A*-A. Forty-eight per cent achieved AAB or above and the average grade achieved by an A-Level student is an A.

More than 90 per cent of all students in biology, computer science, economics, English literature, French, Italian, further maths, PE, and sociology achieved A* to B grades.

Those to achieve a full sweep of A*s include Juan Erazo Rojas, who will be studying chemistry at the University of Oxford; Georgy Shine who is off to read physics at the University of Manchester, and Amarie Phillips who will study chemistry at UCL and Ryan Pereira who is going to Cambridge University to study land economy.

Headteacher Eamon Connolly said: ‘I am delighted for each and every one of our students for these excellent results; both those who have been with us since the age of 11 and those who joined our sixth form.

“I am proud of the achievements and feel confident we have prepared them, both academically and personally, to enter adulthood and embark on their chosen degrees as fine young people.”

For quite a while now we have been bombarded with ‘immersive’ events, which most of the time means taking plays out of theatres and dropping them into abandoned warehouses, lowlit so as to hide how decrepit they are in the hope that the novelty of following the cast from dank room to dank room will be the matchwinning USP. So my heart sank when I got the invite to Van Gogh – The Immersive Experience, writes Michael Holland...

Best described as a chamber musical theatre production, Andrew Lippa and Tom Greenwald’s John and Jen is a play exploring the trials and tribulations of a sibling relationship, writes Carolyn Hart Taylor...

Sharing a cast iron bond, they sing gleefully ‘to always take care of each other’. Touching moments make concrete their bond, alerting us to the potential fall out should anything come between the duo.

Unsurprisingly, life’s opportunities pose the greatest threat, with the prospect of college, clubbing and boys glistening on the horizon, Jen, (Rachel Tucker) thirteen years senior, is quickly packing bags, instructing John, (Lewis Cornay) to “hold down the fort, Hotshot”.

Both actors do justice to the multitude of numbers sung throughout. Tucker’s vocals express angst, standing torn between her brother’s welfare or satisfying her

own ambitions! Cornay’s, meanwhile, remain convincingly within his younger years, expressing youthful excitement, loss, and frustration towards increasing maturity.

Lyrics by Tom Greenwald are the perfect accompaniment to their timeline, kicking off with childhood Christmas 1, to Bye Room, Graduation and The Road Ends Here.

Cyclical themes resonate; Jen names her baby after her brother to avoid the pain of loss. Cornay also plays Jen’s son, odd for anyone struggling to compartmentalise actors. And universal themes reside; do choices result in characters’ destiny, or are they casualties of cultural expectations?

Being a small theatre adds to the first act’s mainly domestic setting, but as life broadens both actors’ versatility captivates through energised numbers that reveal the power behind Tucker’s vocals, resulting in a standing ovation finale.

Kevin Elyot’s My Night with Reg tells the story of a group of friends gathering in 1985 at Guy’s flat for a drunken get-together. The advent of the AIDS crisis, however, is about to change lives forever, writes Susan Hallissey...

This doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs but the pathos and humanity that the entourage bring make the evening an enjoyable one, if a not a little lost towards the end.

Firstly, there is Guy (Paul Keating), the host with the most in Lee Newby’s neatly designed living room and conservatory.

Introverted and shy, he is at pains to accommodate his guests with his humble hosting, whilst faffing about and worrying about his egg whites not stiffening. Keating really works on the heartstrings with his vulnerable portrayal of Guy. When John (Edward M Corrie) arrives, Guy is all fingers and thumbs as it comes to light that he has been in love with John since their university days. John, on the other hand, is seemingly relaxed, rich and aloof. The fleeting arrival of Daniel (Gerard McCarthy) reveals that he is living in bliss with his partner Reg. After a short first act, where Guy reveals an awful incident on holiday, toasts are made to ‘gross indecency’, David Bowie is played, and the group is loosening up.

Act Two and it is back to Guy’s for a wake. Warring couple Benny (Stephen K Amos) and Bernie (Alan Turkington), are a breath of fresh air, taking the energy up a level. Bernie’s monologues on the virtues of conservatories and Benny’s rough and ready bus driver bring laughter and another layer.

Revelations begin to unravel as it is disclosed who Reg had been secretly sleeping with. Benny alludes to the fear of AIDS when checking his body for signs.

In the final scenes the energy levels drop with an ending that seems drawn out and disconnected, as John and Eric’s interaction misses the mark.

There are highs and lows in this piece.

Maybe the message and awareness of the devastation AIDS can still cause need to be ramped up for 2021, or are we all a bit too aware of pandemics at present?

Finally, the Turbine front of house staff, deserve a shout out. They were as accommodating and attentive as Guy in his living room!

Fortunately, I was utterly wrong about this exhibition as it does justify the ‘Experience’ in the title and also because the ‘Immersive’ does not mean you are in and part of the action as the actors work around you, but that you are dripping in sunflowers, and drenched in starry, starry light in a 360° extravaganza of music and colour.

On entry you encounter long drapes depicting Van Gogh paintings. These serve these the purposes of dividing the large space up into the different compartments of the exhibition.

In the exhibition proper you are guided through a history of the artist’s life and the development of his work.

Much of this is delivered via animated displays that amazingly bring the art to life.

Next is the main event, the huge, two-storey room like a giant flotation tank filled with colour, light and sound.

People lounge in deck chairs and let a magical, liquid Van Gogh wash over them, dipping their toes into the fluid artwork as it ebbs and flows around them.

You walk out in a dream and onwards to the next experience Virtual Reality. Here, once the headset is on you are transported through eight of Van Gogh’s works. You begin in his bedroom before floating through the fields, into the town and along the river. You reach out to open a gate and to touch the stars; you duck beneath the low branches and turn turn to look through windows of the houses and see who is home. This, for me, was the highlight of the show.

After the VR I went back into the big room to watch crows fly over the wheat fields, listen to the calming music and allow my body and mind to reset and prepare for re-entering the outside world.

You can also get to try your hand at drawing but at this point I was far too chilled for that.

Walworth’s transforming mission If you have strolled along East Street at any time over the last 146 years, you will have walked past a small church and mission building, perhaps barely giving it a second glance, writes Neil Crossfield...

It does not have the architectural splendour of Sir John Soane’s St Peter’s Church in Liverpool Grove, nor the imposing façade of the Metropolitan Tabernacle founded by Spurgeon at the Elephant and Castle, but the humble East Street Baptist church is perhaps the most historically significant religious building in Walworth.

The origins of the Richmond Street Mission School began around 1858, when John Thomas Dunn had founded a Ragged School in a loft, above a cow shed in East Street.

Until recently it was believed that Dunn had been a disciple of the charismatic Charles Haddon Spurgeon, however, recent research has shown that in 1858, Dunn had originally been employed as a missionary by the London City Mission (LCM). The LCM started operating in London around 1837, founded by David Naismith, in an effort to bring evangelical Christianity to London by the provision of pastoral care for the poorest in society.

John Thomas Dunn had been born in Bermondsey in 1829, the son of a leather tanner. At the age of sixteen he was apprenticed to a haberdasher, Simon Gingall, completing his seven years apprenticeship in 1853.

In the same year he married Martha Green and they went on to have seven children together.

His career as a haberdasher may have been fleeting as a document held in the LCM Archive records that when he was being examined for the role of an LCM missionary, he was employed as a carpenter and was earning £84 per year.

He was accepted as a missionary of the society in February 1858, taking a pay cut in the process with a new salary of just £75 per year.

In 1866, Dunn handed his resignation in to the LCM and officially joined the Metropolitan Tabernacle, eventually working closely with Spurgeon and becoming a respected church elder.

Later in life, Dunn talked about the conditions he had found in Walworth when he began his work there. He had observed that, “Walworth was sunken into the depths of moral degradation and vice.

This, with the insanitary condition of its entire surroundings, rendered it a veritable plague spot”.

He went on to note: “The children grew up ignorant, depraved and ragged: truly a ragged school was needed.”

He had been talking here about the mid19th century, but despite the work of Dunn and other philanthropic and charitable organisations, conditions improved little over the years.

In 1896, none other than Charles Booth had noted in his Life and Labour in London, that “in this the most miserable slum in the capital, it was likely that a high proportion of the children would grow up to be liars or thieves.”

In an age before compulsory education, Sunday and Ragged schools were primarily set up in the hope that by teaching children to read it would allow them to reach salvation by the knowledge and greater understanding of religious scripture.

Though in today’s more secular world we might consider this as a form of religious indoctrination, few of the children who attended Dunn’s Ragged School would have had any opportunity for any type of formal education.

Many of the working classes would have been illiterate at this time, and so the chance to be able to rectify this would have been appealing to many, as this could have led to more sophisticated and varied employment possibilities.

In 1861, some nine years before the introduction of the 1870 Elementary Education Act, Dunn had told a fundraising meeting that his Ragged School was open five nights every week with an average attendance of 120, and that in the two years of its existence some 350 boys and girls had passed through it.

Dunn’s Ragged School went from strength to strength, operating from several different locations over the years.

Eventually a permanent location was needed, so with the support of Spurgeon, funds were raised and in 1875 the new Richmond Street Mission and School Building was erected.

In the December 1875 edition of Sword and Trowel, the Metropolitan Tabernacle’s magazine, Spurgeon notes that on Monday, October 25, the new schools in Richmond Street, Walworth were opened.

He describes the new buildings thus: “The two rooms, one above the other, are plain, well ventilated, lofty, and moderately spacious.”

Though Dunn had raised a substantial amount of money, funds were still required to complete the task and the Tabernacle assisted them greatly. After the opening ceremony at Richmond Street, the attendees gathered at the Tabernacle school room for tea and a prayer meeting.

At the end of this, Spurgeon told those present that £150 more was required to open the school debt-free and that he was willing to personally contribute £50 of this and that he would not leave the Tabernacle until the other £100 was found.

This was a substantial sum of money in 1875, equating to around £3,300 in today’s figures.

While the Ragged School was primarily concerned with the education of the poor, Spurgeon’s Metropolitan Tabernacle, the London City Mission and the many other groups involved in the evangelical movement shared a far wider objective.

Though there may have been slight doctrinal differences between the different churches, the general belief held by these non-conformists was that the condition of the poor could be raised by Christian redemption. Apart from education, it was widely believed that a transformation of the manners and behaviours of the poor could lead to respectability and salvation.

Missionaries would promote cleanliness in the home, regularity at work, temperance, sexual abstinence outside marriage and the importance of thrift and saving.

Within a few years the range of work carried out at the Richmond Street Mission expanded greatly. Apart from more traditional church services and the provision of pastoral care for the congregation and wider Walworth community, the mission and latterly the Baptist Church have, over the years, provided a whole range of what would today be called support services including a Sunday School; a Ragged School; children’s services; mothers’ meetings; young men’s bible classes; Band of Hope meetings; a Pure literature society; a Tract society; a penny bank; an Evangelists Association; a mutual improvement society; lending libraries; country visits for children and adults; the provision of Christmas dinners for the poor; a servants’ registry; clothing societies; a gymnasium; and soup kitchens.

Though Spurgeon died in 1892, the work of the Mission continued and expanded, eventually outgrowing the original building. Therefore, on May 8, 1896, the foundation stone for a new church was laid

by Her Grace the Duchess of Roxburghe.

Originally Princess Christian of SchleswigHolstein, a daughter of Queen Victoria, had been due to conduct the ceremony but was otherwise engaged.

A marquee covered the site where the new church was to be built, ‘prettily decorated with flags, flowers and choice plants’. Men of the Royal West Surrey Regiment formed a guard of honour and

music was supplied by the Dr Barnardo’s Boys’ Band.

During the speeches, JT Dunn related how he had started his work in 1858 with ‘six unruly boys’ in a ‘small, dirty, ill ventilated room, about 10ft or 12ft square’.

Now, in 1896, he noted that the mission had 120 volunteer workers and around 900 children attended services each week.

The architect chosen to build the new church was George Baines, Scottish by birth but London-based. He specialised in nonconformist churches and may have designed as many as 200 of these all around the country, several of which now have Grade II listed status.

This may not be an elegant or highly decorated structure, but it is functional and demonstrates that the people who commissioned it were more interested in administration of relief to the needy than any ostentatious display of faith.

Dunn continued to work among the poor of Walworth for over forty years and lived at several addresses in the area including, Edward Street in Newington, Boyson Road and finally at number 25 Grosvenor Park.

His wife Martha died in 1900 and he spent the twilight years of his life living with a boarder, a servant and a personal nurse.

Even after his death, the mission continued its important work, as living conditions in Walworth in the early years of the 20th century were frequently difficult and many of the less fortunate members of the community would have continued to require assistance.

Somehow the Richmond Street Mission and School buildings survived the worst ravages of the Blitz, unlike many of the other buildings in East Street which were destroyed by enemy action.

Redevelopment in Walworth around the turn of the 20th century meant that Richmond Street had long disappeared, with the 1896 Ordnance Survey map showing it had been renamed Blackwood Street.

However, the mission kept its original name until 1955 when it was renamed East Street Baptist Mission.. In 1969, the church officially split from the Metropolitan Tabernacle and became East Street Baptist Church, the name by which it is still known today. The church still exists and continues to provide valuable spiritual and practical assistance to its community.

Dunn would no doubt be proud that what he started over 150 years ago was still serving the people of Walworth but perhaps he would be saddened that in this modern age it still needed to provide support to many people experiencing poverty and hardship.

JT Dunn died on 22 May 1902 at the age of 72 and was buried just four days later at Camberwell Old Cemetery. His modest headstone, still well-tended, now tilts to one side near the entrance on Forest Hill Road. If you stand facing the inscription, your eyes are drawn to the London skyline in front of you. Clearly visible in the distance, through the trees, you can make out the unmistakable form of the Strata Tower at the Elephant and Castle, casting its shadow over Walworth.

It seems apt that even in death, this remarkable man looks out over the streets of the area he knew and cared for so many years.

As part of their Walworth Stories project, the Walworth Society are currently trying to research and collect memories and stories about the church and the important role it has played in the local area. People may have recollections about attending Boys or Girls Brigade meetings there in the 1970s, had a family member baptised or married at the church or even remember street preachers, ‘Tub Thumping’ in the market over the years.

The Council is consulting on the Proposed Main Modifications for the New Southwark Plan from 6 August to 24 September 2021.

The New Southwark Plan sets out the overarching planning and development strategy for the whole borough up to 2036. The Examination in Public took place from 23 February – 30 April 2021. Following the public hearings, the council has worked with the Inspectors to propose a number of main modifications to the Plan. These modifications are what we seek comments on now. All duly made representations on the proposed main modifications will be considered by the Inspectors who will then prepare a report for the council.

This consultation asks two specific questions which will give you an opportunity to comment on how the New Southwark Plan has been prepared, that its aims are achievable and that the plan is based on a robust evidence base. These questions are more commonly known as the ‘Test of Soundness’.

Gavin Rose’s team have played eight times in less than a month, running out winners in three, while one match ended in a draw along with four losses – though one of those defeats was on penalties in an annual cup fixture.

The team played for the first time since January away at Carshalton on July 10 and fell to a 1-0 loss, before home games against Millwall and Crystal Palace’s under23s, which ended 2-0 and 5-0 respectively to the visitors.

Like the men’s team, Dulwich’s women’s side, who are managed by Ryan Dempsey, have been involved in two incomplete league seasons as a result of Covid-19, but

both 2019-20 and 2020-21 saw DHFCW top of the table at the time that the leagues were curtailed – with the club upset that neither season has resulted in the reward of promotion.

The FA did however decide that it wanted to promote some teams last season, and asked clubs to apply for promotion based on a combination of on and off pitch factors, which Dulwich Hamlet did, but lost out to QPR Women. It is thought that this was due to QPR’s superior performances in cup competitions, but Dulwich have

publicly expressed exception to the verdict.

They go into 2021-22 with on-loan West Ham goalkeeper Mia North, former Exeter City midfielder Daniella Tyson and versatile full-back Liz Berkeley from AFC Wimbledon, all signed within the past few months, while the club announced at the end of July that up-and-coming coach Matthew Fogbawa, 26, would also be joining the set-up.

On the same ground, Rose and his assistant Junior Kadi headed into August buoyed by a 5-2 victory over Brentford B. Summer signing Chike Kandi scored two, as did striker Deon Moore, and stalwart defender Quade Taylor got the other.

Moore is one of many players who featured last season behind closed doors, but who will no doubt relish competitive matches in front of a packed Champion Hill this season. Ex-Celtic left-back Andre Blackman, who played three times in the Scottish Premiership, Michael Timlin, an experienced Football League player and midfielder Jordan Higgs are among other retained players from the last campaign.

Kandi, right-sided player Jazzi BarnumBobb, left-back Tyrone Sterling, and new captain Jack Holland, who was recruited this summer from Bromley, are confirmed additions to the Hamlet squad. And it was Holland’s former club who claimed the Glyn Beverly Memorial Cup on August 3, as they won 4-2 on penalties after twice pegging

back one-goal Dulwich advantages, given to them by Darren McQueen and BarnumBobb.

McQueen, who was a highly thoughtof member of the Tottenham Hotspur academy before he moved to Ipswich in 2014, has had spells at several National League clubs, and Dulwich fans might remember him making an impression against their team while playing for Dartford in 2020. Now they wait to see if a move to Champion Hill is made official.

The final run-out before Saturday’s league opener at home to Chippenham Town saw the Hamlet come from behind to beat Merstham 3-1 away. Not much detail is known about that August 6 match in Surrey, with jokes rife on Twitter that Rose should pull out all the stops to sign ‘unknown,’ who is reported as the scorer of all three Dulwich goals that day.

One user claimed that Higgs, Kandi and Jordan Green, a 26-year-old New Cross-born forward who has played Championship football for Barnsley, netted the goals for Dulwich against Merstham.

DHFCW kick-off the new league season against New London Lionesses at Champion Hill on Sunday, August 22, and there are two more opportunities for fans to visit the home of football in Dulwich when it hosts the Hamlet against Dartford on Saturday, August 28 and DHFCW against Worthing Women the following day.

‘I was the captain for most of the time growing up – it’s something I really enjoy’

By Mark Baldwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk Jamie Smith may have only just turned 21 last month but, at Surrey, he has long been earmarked for future leadership roles and this summer’s Royal London Cup has given him an exciting early opportunity to test his natural captaincy skills at senior level.

“It is such a huge honour to captain Surrey, a club I first represented at the age of nine,” said Smith after taking over from an injured Hashim Amla for last Thursday’s Royal London group 1 fixture against Somerset at the Kia Oval.

two days later, scoring 34 in a dramatic rain-affected match eventually lost by just one run as Surrey chased a Duckworth Lewis Stern target of 227 in 39 overs.

Smith admits that captaining his native county is something he has coveted ever since he marked his first-class debut with a brilliant 127 against MCC in Dubai in March 2019.

“Yes, it’s something I’ve always had my eye on,” added Smith. “I know I am still a relative newcomer to the dressing room but the senior players at the club have all been very helpful to me over the past couple of seasons.

“It gives me great confidence to be seen as someone who can captain the side and, due to Hashim’s injury, the next in

line.”

It was in July 2018, a week short of his 18th birthday, that the talented Smith first played for Surrey – in a T20 London derby against Middlesex at Lord’s, no less – and he has quickly established himself as a first team regular with his elegant, powerful batting and, when required, his wicketkeeping skills.

An ever-present across all formats this season, he has made a championship century and five other scores above fifty in all competitions – including a remarkable 19-ball 54 against Nottinghamshire in the Royal London Cup win at Guildford.

Now he can add captaincy experience to his fast-growing cricketing CV,

“To get the opportunity to captain Surrey now is a dream come true for me and it’s definitely something I want to do more in the future. And, at the moment, who knows what the immediate future holds with players away a lot playing for England so I’ll do it whenever I’m asked.”

Surrey, of course, also have a sizeable group of players currently playing in The Hundred – including injuries, they are without more than a dozen players overall – but young cricketers like Smith, Ryan Patel and Dan Moriarty have already grabbed their chances to step up in various leading roles during what is a unique, and noticeably well-supported, Royal London Cup competition.

“I was the captain for most of the time growing up,” said Smith. “I did it through the Surrey age group teams, and at school and for my club age groups. I really got into it at Surrey under-17 level and it is something I really enjoy.

“I think I have a decent cricket brain and a lot to offer in terms of leadership and on-field decision-making. I like the leadership side of the game. When I’m keeping wicket, or in the outfield, I always like to offer up opinions and I like the challenge of trying to put your stamp on a match as a captain.

“We have been threatening to put out a performance like that for a few games now.

“I would have bitten your hand off for 125 and every batter came out with

incredible intent and trying to hit every ball for six. It was good to see and great to watch.

“It was a frustrating delay. There wasn’t a huge amount of change the outfield was still very wet. “[Sunil] Narine kick-started our innings with that ball. He set the tone brilliantly like he has done on thousands of occasions. It is just great he’s on our side.

“Every game is a must win for us from now on in so to put on a performance like that is always nice.”

Trent Rockets bowler Sam Cook, who took one for 10 on his Hundred debut, said: “When we turned up it was damp conditions so we were prepared for a reduced game. 65 balls and it went to the wire so it could have gone either way. I’m just frustrated to be on the

wrong side of the result.

“It is a tough ground to bowl at with the short boundary so I would have taken those figures at the start of the day. This winter I’ve spent a large amount of time looking after my white ball skills. I’ve worked really hard to develop my skills and it is nice to see my hard work pay off with performances like this.

“I think Alex Hales is still rolling around in the changing room. To get one in that area is bad enough but to get two in a row is tough. He’s talking to us with a high voice!

“We have played some unbelievable cricket in this competition so far and in this format you can end up on either side of the result so we aren’t fazed but this result and won’t change our brand of cricket.”

Muller, 19, played the full game on the right side of a back three as Tony Watt levelled ten minutes from time after Stephen O’Donnell’s 34thminute own goal.

Callum Davidson’s Saints are on two points after two games. They host Galatasaray on Thursday in the second leg of the Europa League third qualifying round with the score at 1-1.

In League Two, Tyler Burey made the perfect start to his Hartlepool United career when he crossed for Gavan Holohan to score in the 88th minute in their 1-0 win at home to Crawley Town.

Burey, who had come on in the 61st minute, missed a chance from

Luke Molyneux’s cross before he got his assist as Hartlepool won on the opening day after their promotion through the National League play-offs last season.

“It was a brilliant day for the club, for the supporters and it was important we sent them away happy,” Pools boss Dave Challinor said. “We managed to do that and I’d have taken that.

“I thought we started the game really well. We should have scored after 10 seconds, 20 minutes and for 25 we

were really good. Then we showed some bad decisions in possession and gave them a leg up.

“The second half wasn’t a great spectacle, we defended a bit deep. You make substitutes to try to snatch the game late on. It was tight, and we’ve got a goal, a scrappy goal or a good goal makes no difference.

“We are off the mark, three points and a clean sheet. Lots of promise as well and a special occasion becomes a memorable one with that goal.”

Former Lion joins Bromley

The 20-year-old son of Gary signed a permanent deal after his release by Millwall this summer.

He was on trial with the club and impressed as he has scored three goals in pre-season.

Alexander played once for Millwall’s senior team, under Neil Harris, on the last day of the 2018-19 season when he came on as a substitute at Wigan with current Lions midfielder Billy Mitchell.

But though he was a regular scorer for the under-23s he didn’t get another firstteam chance.

Alexander spent time on loan at Concord Rangers during the 201920 season, helping them reach the Buildbase FA Trophy final, but his spell there was disrupted after Covid-19 and the subsequent restrictions.

Bromley have run the rule over a number of players this summer, and boss Andy Woodman joked: “I’d like to welcome trialist A, B, C, I – whatever he’s been called!”

Woodman added: “He’s a goal-scorer and he’s shown that at Millwall in the under-23s and will give us another dimension in terms of how we play.

“George is always pulling the trigger and is a determined young man, so it’s great to have him in the building and I’m looking forward to working with him and hopefully watching him score many goals for the club.”

Bromley start their National League season at home to Grimsby on Saturday, August 21.

Alexander said: “I am delighted to have signed for Bromley and hopefully I can get some more goals.

“I’m looking forward to playing some men’s football and impressing the supporters.”

This season could well culminate in a top-six finish, or better, promotion to the Premier League, which would be some achievement.

Every club has suffered with the lack of supporters during the pandemic, but perhaps Millwall more than most.

And that bond between Lions

Jed Wallace goes to celebrate with the away end players and fans was never more evident than when Jed Wallace rifled one into the top corner and then sprinted to celebrate with those 2,504 inside the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium at the opposite end of the ground.

It had been 519 days since Millwall supporters were allowed to attend

a competitive away game, but those long hours watching on iFollow during the previous year-and-a-half must have felt worth the wait with just eleven minutes on the clock.

Wallace reached double figures in his last two seasons, and already looks on course to achieve that feat once again.

He needed just two touches when George Evans’ cross fell his way on the edge of the box. One to control and another to hammer past Seny Dieng.

But what followed really was a moment to savour as the entire Millwall team followed him and raced towards the other end of the pitch to join in the celebrations with Bartosz Bialkowski and the Lions faithful.

Unfortunately for Millwall, that second goal that was always likely to be needed against a dangerous QPR side didn’t arrive. George Saville and Benik Afobe went close, though their tame efforts failed to trouble Dieng.

And just past the half-hour mark, Gary Rowett’s men were punished for not making more of their dominance when Rob Dickie galloped into far too much space from his own half before firing into the bottom-left corner from 25 yards.

Two Bialkowski saves from Charlie Austin and Chris Willock aside, chances were limited from then on in.

Nothing is ever decided on the

opening day, though, and against a QPR side fancied by many to challenge for the play-offs, avoiding defeat was more than a respectable start.

But if Millwall want to mount a serious top-six push themselves, it’s their form in SE16 that’s going to go some way to deciding their fate.

And with a red-hot atmosphere expected against Blackburn this Saturday, there’s no better time or place for Millwall to get their campaign up and running, while giving a bumper Den crowd the perfect welcome home present in the process.

Midfielder rejects notion Lions are a defensive side

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MAIKEL KIEFTENBELD has rejected the notion that Millwall are a defensive team – saying it’s more about intent than systems.

Lions boss Gary Rowett’s current preferred system is 5-3-2. But Kieftenbeld pointed out that with two attacking wing-backs there are often four players across the front line.

Rowett also wants the midfielders either side of the holding player to be attacking threats, and George Saville is an ideal addition in one of those roles after he scored ten goals in 2017-18 before leaving for Middlesbrough.

Since Rowett took charge in October 2019, the wide centre-backs have also been encouraged to attack spaces in front of them.

The most spectacular example of that was at The Valley against Charlton in July last year when Jake Cooper strode into the box to lash in the only goal nine minutes from time.

Only eight teams last season and six teams in 2019-20 scored fewer goals than Millwall in the last two campaigns.

But with the likes of Saville and wingbacks Danny McNamara and Scott

Malone, the Lions have lots of attacking options from deep.

“It’s just a system, it depends how you play it,” Kieftenbeld said. “If you’ve got really attacking wing-backs then you’ve nearly got four attackers.

“Listen, if you just sit in and wait for the opponent and play on the counter, yeah then it’s defensive.

“But if you see the way we played it against QPR, some spells at the start of the game and in the second half, then people couldn’t call us defensive.

“We want to put opponents under pressure, create chances and we’ve got the squad for it. It’s not a defensive way of playing football, it can be really attacking.”

Millwall’s attacking impetus from midfield puts more pressure on Kieftenbeld as the first-choice holding player.

Kieftenbeld learned his trade in one of the most tactically sophisticated football environments in the world, when he played for Dutch sides Go Ahead Eagles and Groningen before transferring to Birmingham in 2015.

He agrees with the stereotype that Dutch players are brought up with tactical acumen.

He said: “I think so, yeah, we learn when we’re really young – maybe too young! In that position you’ve

got a lot of responsibility. I like that responsibility.

“It’s true that when you’ve got the wing-backs going forward and attacking midfielders going forward it’s one of my jobs to make sure that everyone is in their position.

“I really like that. I feel comfortable in front of the defence. If you put me too high up the pitch I’m not as comfortable, we have players who are better in those positions.

“I like being in front of the defence to break up play and then feed the attackers, who are much better with the ball than I am.

“The gaffer started playing me there against Ipswich and then against QPR. If it’s with one sitter or two sitters it doesn’t really matter to me.

“I really enjoy the role and playing in this team with the qualities that we have. I’m really looking forward to this season.”

One thing that Kieftenbeld could be criticised for is his lack of goals. That might seem harsh, yet he showed against QPR with a vicious, dipping shot from 25 yards that went just over the crossbar that he has shooting ability.

He scored six goals in 165 games for Birmingham. Former Lions man Shaun Williams averaged two goals a season

for Millwall from open play from defensive midfield in his seven-and-ahalf seasons for the club.

And while that may not seem like a lot, Williams rarely scored a goal that wasn’t important.

Kieftenbeld knows it is something he could add to his game.

“Of course, definitely,” he said. “In my time at Birmingham I didn’t score a lot, I haven’t scored a lot in my career.

“It’s probably not my first thought when I step on the pitch, ‘I’m going to try to score a goal today’. It’s not my main job.

“But if I could add some goals to my game this season of course it would be great.”

Kieftenbeld has more midfield competition this season after Millwall brought favourite George Saville back from Middlesbrough this summer.

“He’s a really good player. I’m glad he’s joined my team now so I don’t have to play against him,” Kieftenbeld admitted. “He’s got a lot of experience in the Championship and you’ll know that you can’t compare it with any other league in the world.

“It’s really physical, it’s all about second balls and he’s a great player to have in your team.

“It’s really exciting, that’s what you want as players. You want the manager

to strengthen the squad, and everyone got really excited about this season.

“Now it’s our job to show it on the pitch, because we’ve signed a lot of really good players. When it kicks off at 3pm on a Saturday you have to perform.

“We’ve signed good players alongside those who have been playing here a long time. It’s not like what I saw at Birmingham for a couple of years, we were signing nine or ten players and then that needs time.

“The main group was already here and to add good players on top of that are the ingredients you need for a good season.

“Of course, I think if you ask most footballers in the Championship they would all say they would try to go for the play-offs.

“I am ambitious, that’s why I signed for this club, but you just have to play well at first. If you ask me the same question when we’re halfway through the season then hopefully I can give a better answer.

“I was really impressed with the players here when I moved to Millwall and now after signing more good players I’m just really excited for the season.

“Hopefully we can make the fans happy.”

After 528 days fans were allowed back inside The Den and boy did they make themselves heard. There may have only been just short of 8,000 in the stadium on Tuesday night, but when they got going it sounded like a lot more.

Saturday’s clash with Blackburn Rovers will of course be the major homecoming for Lions fans when a much bigger crowd is expected but those that did turn out for Tuesday’s EFL Cup tie would have gone home entertained with both sides giving good accounts of themselves.

Despite the return of their supporters,

the Lions got off to the worst possible start.

Recco Hackett-Fairchild, who scored Portsmouth’s winner at Fleetwood last Saturday, made it two in two to start the season with a blockbuster finish past debutant George Long in the Millwall goal. A loose pass in the Lions’ midfield was seized upon by HackettFairchild, he cleverly cut onto his left foot and punished the error to the maximum. Four minutes in and it was the 2,000-strong Portsmouth army that were the ones making all the noise.

The opening ten minutes did belong to the visitors but Millwall then began to work their way back into the game and on 21 minutes got their reward.

Mahlon Romeo, one of five changes made by Gary Rowett from the 1-1 draw at QPR last Saturday, found Jed Wallace in the box and his shot was deflected by former Lion Shaun Williams, straight into the path of Scott Malone, who at the second attempt brought the Lions level, opening his account for the season with a simple close-range finish. A massive roar around the stadium that had been so dearly missed was finally heard again.

That was a tide-turner. The momentum was now with Millwall, backed by three sides of the ground. Just six minutes later, they were on their feet again.

George Saville – making a fourth home ‘debut’ in a Lions shirt – showed exactly why Rowett brought him back to the club. Tom Bradshaw’s shot was blocked but the loose ball was picked up by Romeo whose cross found Saville.

He adjusted his feet brilliantly to slot the ball past Pompey keeper Alex Bass.

This was now a different game with the visitors unable to retain the ball.

A period of solid Millwall possession ended with Saville sending another effort over the bar. However, the Lions were reminded of the threat Danny Cowley’s side posed, Ronan Curtis dragging a shot wide as first-half stoppage-time closed in.

Benik Afobe perhaps should have made it 3-1 before the break. He found himself unmarked in the box, but his shot was well saved by Bass.

The visitors were reduced to ten men four minutes into the second half, Callum Johnson sent off for a foul on Bradshaw.

There was a nice moment for Shaun

Williams who was back at The Den for the first time since leaving in the summer. He got over a back problem to start, but was substituted in the 61st minute to applause from around the ground. It was a less pleasing evening for another former Lion, striker John Marquis, who went off at half-time.

Rowett was pleased with his side’s comeback in front of their own fans but felt they should have been able to kill off the game. Substitute Matt Smith hit the base of the post and Malone, Saville and Benik Afobe all saw efforts go high and wide as that third goal would not materialise.

And then League One Pompey got their chance to send the tie to penalties but Ryan Leonard saved the hosts when he headed Hackett-Fairchild’s attempt off the line.

Millwall have reached the second round of the EFL Cup for a sixth season in a row to make it a good start to the season after that point at Loftus Road.

Rowett took the opportunity to slightly tweak his system, Leonard starting on the right side of the defence and Bradshaw and Wallace either side of Afobe in attack. Jake Cooper made a

Rotation of the squad will once again be key this season and the ability to be able to switch systems and formations could be the difference between success and failure with the league set to be tight once again.

It took the Lions a while to get up and running at home last season, in an empty Den without fans. It led to Millwall’s worst home record in a decade, as they won just seven of 23 games on their own patch.

The feeling is that with supporters back in the stadium this season, SE16 will once again become the feared place that it was before.

Certainly, Blackburn Rovers will not fancy the trip south knowing it will be a near enough full-capacity Den to greet them, something that everyone knows makes a huge difference.

The players will be roared on, they just need to make sure they do the business again.

Cooper has been struggling with a back injury and Murray Wallace started last Saturday in the 1-1 draw against QPR. Mason Bennett is out and not expected to be back until after the first international break in midOctober.

Otherwise boss Gary Rowett has lots of options against Tony Mowbray’s side, who started their campaign with a 2-1 home win against Swansea.

One of Millwall’s problems over the last two seasons has been a lack of goals. Rowett will be hoping for more composure in the final third against Rovers after his side failed to add to their lead when they were on top against the Hoops.

“I can remember a couple of times in the first half when Danny [McNamara] gets down the side and maybe just needs to feed a better ball into the box or to pick someone out.

“But you look at people like that – Danny Mac, Dan Ballard – they won’t have played in front of that crowd for a while. A lot of our players wouldn’t have done. So you can understand the swings in the game.

“Our back three were excellent, they were really firm and resolute. Maybe with more energy in midfield we could have supplied our two strikers with more opportunities.”

Millwall supporters are back at The Den for a league game for the first time with no restrictions since February 2020.

“And then after the goal from Jed, it exploded. It was an amazing feeling.

I think everyone in the Millwall end really enjoyed it.

“It will be my first [league] game in front of the home fans and I don’t have to tell you how much I’m looking forward to that.

“Football is a lot of emotion and I like that about it. Nobody really enjoyed the last year, the fans, players, staff, it was just different. It’s not how you want to play football.

“You want fans back, you want reactions, whether things go right or wrong you just want to hear them.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett says some of the squad and most of the staff have had their vaccinations and the club are “encouraging” players to get their jabs.

The Lions’ pre-season preparations were disrupted with several players having to self-isolate after they were ‘pinged’ as close contacts of someone who had tested positive for Covid.

Last season, Rowett and his staff had to self-isolate for ten days leaving Alex Pearce and Shaun Williams in charge for two games.

Some Lions players are still building up their fitness after spending a chunk of their pre-seasons at home rather than on

the training ground.

But from August 16, adults who are fully vaccinated and under-18s in England won’t have to self-isolate if a close contact tests positive for Covid.

Millwall played Portsmouth on Tuesday night, and Pompey boss Danny Cowley said last month their club were also trying to encourage their players to get vaccinated.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last week said some of his players were “not sure” over whether to be vaccinated. From October, the government are set to push through plans that at events of more than 20,000, proof of having been vaccinated will be required. That would include staff and players.

The Professional Footballers’ Association said players should be

allowed make their own choice.

“At the moment it’s their own decision,” Rowett told the News. “Of course, we’re trying to encourage them to do it because then it makes things a lot easier past August 16.

“If someone comes into contact with someone who tests positive they don’t have to self-isolate.

“What we don’t want is our players constantly having to self-isolate without actually having Covid. We’ve seen preseason how difficult that is to manage in terms of the fitness perspective.

“It’s down to the players, quite a number of them have got it. Most of the staff have.

But there will always be some players who feel for different reasons they don’t want to have it yet. We’ve got a mixture.

“To minimise disruption, of course we’d love all the players to be vaccinated

but I think most clubs up and down the country will have a mixture.”

Meanwhile, with the transfer window closing on August 31 Premier League clubs have started making moves in the market.

That should mean young players from those clubs becoming available for loan as managers make space in their squads.

Rowett said things have started to pick up. “Yeah, a little bit. But the thing for us is we’re still in the same scenario where we need players to move in the other direction before we start trying to do more business.

“We’ve got some good targets, there are some good players available. We have to make good, sensible decisions as well.

“It’s picking up pace, there’s a lot more movement than there was the last couple of weeks.”

Coops benefits from Pompey minutes

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT said Jake Cooper was still only at “70, 75 per cent” after the defender made his first start of the season in the 2-1 win over Portsmouth on Tuesday evening.

Cooper missed the opening game of the season against QPR but got through the full match as the Lions went through to the second round of the EFL Cup. Rowett had planned to take Cooper off but Callum Johnson’s sending-off changed that.

“It’s been a difficult one for him because it’s impinged his movement a little bit,” Rowett said. “I still think he’s probably at 70, 75 per cent.

“We toyed with giving him 45 or 60 minutes today. But I felt that when they went down to 10 men it wasn’t a particularly physical game for the centre-backs. We said we’d keep him on.

“There were a few moments late on when maybe that lack of game-time showed. But he’s a top player and he’ll be better for those minutes.

“Lenny [Ryan Leonard] the same, he’d been out injured for a long time, he’ll be better for the minutes.

[Maikel] Kieftenbeld and George Saville, after the Covid situation, will also benefit for the minutes.

“I thought we got through the game quite well. I spoke to the players in there, when big Smudge [Matt Smith] comes on the pitch the game changes and we’ve got to adjust to that.

“We’ve got to try and get better balls in the box, hit better balls on angles, play forward a bit quicker and bypass their block instead of going backwards and sideways which we did a little bit second half.”
