katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Environment activists have savaged Southwark Council’s longawaited climate strategy and action plan, with one speaker telling this month’s cabinet meeting that their plans were ‘unclear and unambitious’.

The document, published this month, was formally announced and approved by the executive cabinet on July 13 but immediately became the target of campaigners’ ire, with key environmental groups in the borough saying they were no longer willing to engage with the local authority until it would engage in ‘meaningful collaboration’.

The council has described the plans as a ‘roadmap’ to becoming a carbon-neutral borough by 2030; a commitment made when the council first declared a climate emergency in 2019.

Since then the pandemic has played a part in both the delayed publication of the highly anticipated plan, but also in the deteriorating relationship between campaigners and the local authority.

The council says its commitments will build on previous success, including reducing Tooley Street’s own carbon footprint by more than a third through investing in LED lighting and renewable electricity in its offices and buildings.

Its pledges for the next decade are focused on five thematic areas; greener buildings; active and sustainable travel; a circular economy with green jobs; thriving natural environment and renewable energy. It has estimated 5,000 green jobs will be created in this timeframe.

According to the council’s own data it is responsible for twelve per cent of all carbon emissions in the borough, with a ‘significant proportion’ from its social housing stock. A key focus will be transitioning into low carbon energy, installing water source heat pumps and piloting ‘passivhaus’ standards in new homes which mean homes are energy efficient and require minimal heating. Gas boilers are also being phased out.

The local authority estimates that at least £3.92 billion is needed to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030 and will therefore be impossible without huge central government investment and buy-in from the private companies, industry and other residents responsible for the majority of the borough's emissions.

The council has also confirmed it plans to hold an annual conference, share yearly progress reports and be held to account by a

citizens’ jury as it decarbonises Southwark.

Cllr Helen Dennis, the cabinet member who holds the climate emergency and sustainable development portfolio, said on launching the strategy: “I’m incredibly proud of our ambitious new strategy which sets us on the path to becoming carbon neutral by 2030, playing our part in combating the global temperature rise and preventing catastrophic climate change.

“Building on the work undertaken to date, we will continue to lead by example and put tackling inequality at the heart of our plans.

“But, we know that we cannot do this alone.

Change at this scale requires partnerships and action at all levels, from residents, businesses, other large organisations in our borough, and community groups.

“It will also require decisive action and investment from central government, to support the transition towards greener homes, renewable energy and more active and sustainable travel.”

At the public meeting, Extinction Rebellion activist Caoimhe Basketter said the document was not fit for purpose, lacked timelines and clear targets, and urged Tooley Street’s cabinet to reject and rewrite it. Areas targeted for criticism include hazy promises such as ‘reducing car journeys to a minimum’ and continued lobbying for the Bakerloo Line extension and Camberwell Station to be reopening, but with little other detail on alternative public transport options.

The strategy has been described as a ‘starting point’ by council leader Kieron Williams.

listed in the strategy include: “impose more ambitious requirements in planning policy for the enhancement of existing open space, the creation of new open space and the improved carbon capture in land use”; “embed building technologies such as green roofs, facades and cool roofs to reduce carbon emissions and improve biodiversity and local air quality”; and “continue to develop the cycling network in conjunction with the installation of LTNs”.

All are listed with scant details on timing and milestones over the next ten-year period.

Eighteen community groups including the Southwark branch of Extinction Rebellion; Fossil Free Southwark; Southwark Law Centre; SE24 Community Energy; London Living Streets and Trees for Bermondsey have deemed it ‘unacceptable’ and have declined to take part in the council’s Climate Partnership Steering Group until it is fundamentally restructured, saying their input has been ignored.

Last year several groups had threatened to pull out of the initiative after successive delays, citing a ‘lack of ambition’ from Tooley Street.

Karrim Jalali of Fossil Free Southwark said: "We have tried to assist and work with the council at every opportunity, and we're pleased that the strategy has been improved upon since we saw the first draft.

“But it's very easy to give rhetoric - the real test is in what actions will achieve their overarching aim and what targets they are setting to get there.

“In this area, the council falls drastically short. It should be embarrassing for the council to submit an action plan with barely

any actions.

“And one of the very few actions listed - as an immediate action - was already completed in 2020."

Eloise Waldon-Day of XR Southwark said, "To describe this action plan as a 'starting point', while without clear timelines, phased actions, specific targets, or funding details after two and a half years of work, shows that the council and the council leader are not prioritising the climate emergency, despite the rhetoric.

“The plan’s poor quality adds to our concern that the officers in charge haven’t grasped what is needed.

"In response to our delegation, the climate director said they did receive more up-to-date baseline data recently, yet continued using outdated 2017 baseline for their modelling because they ‘had already started’.

“Unfortunately for them, the climate crisis is fast-moving and the evidence base evolves all the time.

“This makes us doubt their capacity for accurate annual reporting, even if the plan were clearly phased towards decarbonisation targets. We are out of time.

"Extinction Rebellion Southwark and local groups have always been willing to provide analysis and support on the action plan; in fact, we are now working on comprehensive feedback for the council, although it may make no difference.

“We want to help, to save all our futures. We hope Southwark Council chooses to engage and work in partnership to strengthen this much-needed plan.”

£6 million donation from one former guy’s patient The centre is leading treatment in head and neck cancer

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A six million donation from a former patient is funding a new, world-class head and neck Cancer Centre at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Announced on Tuesday, July 16 - World Head and Neck Cancer Day - the new centre aims to transform care for patients with these lesser known but complex conditions.

Head and neck cancer is the sixth most common cancer globally, with more than 650,000 people diagnosed each year. In the UK, that equates to around 1,000 people receiving a new diagnosis each month. Eating, speaking and breathing problems are common.

It is hoped the Guy’s Head and Neck Cancer Centre will speed up diagnosis, improve treatments, minimise side effects for patients and reduce rates of recurrence.

The centre has been made possible due to a donation from Charles Wilson and Dr Rowena Olegario from Wilson + Olegario Philanthropy. Charles is the former chief executive officer of Booker, which is part of Tesco Plc, and was treated for neck cancer by a team from Guy’s Cancer three years ago.

Wilson + Olegario Philanthropy are long-term funders for head and neck cancer research, and have committed six million towards the new centre.

Charles says: “It's a privilege to be supporting the launch of the new Guy's Head and Neck Cancer Centre.

“The team at Guy’s are amazing. The treatments they perform and the research they do is ground-breaking.

“The new centre will help transform the detection and treatment of head and neck cancers as well as improve the quality of life for patients – something which is urgently needed.

“In a year when the NHS did such a good job of looking after the nation, and where Guy’s Cancer continued treating patients, it is a privilege to support the hospital at this time.

“I look forward to seeing the impact for both the local community, people across the UK and even around the world.”

Naema Abubakar, from Elephant and Castle, was diagnosed with extremely rare nasopharyngeal cancer in August 2018. She was just 23 and studying at London South Bank University.

She had been suffering with a persistent blocked nose and heavy nose bleeds. Around a year after first

developing these symptoms she was hospitalised after coughing up blood and referred to a specialist, before receiving her cancer diagnosis. Now 26, she remembers: “It was such a huge shock. I just didn’t think that cancer would affect someone like me.

“Even though I’d been experiencing problems for over a year, the diagnosis felt like it came out of nowhere.”

She was given chemotherapy, radiotherapy and had to have ten teeth removed.

“Everyone who helped care for me did so sensitively and professionally, but also in the quickest possible time,” she says.

“Nobody made me feel like my condition was incurable and I felt like I was in the safest possible hands. After the radiotherapy I was unable to open my mouth so I couldn’t talk and had to be fed through a tube. I lost a lot of weight, going down to 45kg, and parts of my hair began to fall out.”

During this time she was supported by a dietitian, had specialised therapy and joined a support group for other young people who had cancer.

“I can’t put into words how much all of the extra support helped me. Meeting other young people who were going through similar things helped to normalise my situation and made me feel less alone,” she says.

“I am still friends with a lot of those I met through the support group.”

Naema continued to study and after graduating from university with a first class degree, she is now in remission.

She currently works as a student advisor and was recently accepted to study a masters in Environment Data Science and Machine Learning at Imperial College London.

“None of this would have been possible without the care me and my whole family received,” she says.

“I will be eternally grateful for everything they’ve given me.”

Guy’s and St Thomas’ Charity, which raises funds for the trust, is hoping to raise a further £5 million toward the project.

Dr Teresa Guerrero Urbano, consultant clinical oncologist, highlights that these types of cancers receive far less funding despite having some of the most visible impacts on patients.

“Diagnosis with any cancer can be life-changing,” she says. “But people with head and neck cancer face treatment that can impact some of the most fundamental aspects of their life – breathing, speaking and eating. nIt's a cancer which few people are aware of, and that receives less funding for research, but it's also a cancer where investment could make a significant difference. That's why we're urgently seeking philanthropic support. And every stride we make in head and neck cancers could have ripple effects for other cancers too.”

30 per cent of southwark care homes workers unvaccinated But 90 per cent of care home residents jabbed

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Thirty per cent of care home workers in Southwark are still unvaccinated, according to data shared at the latest health and wellbeing board meeting at Southwark Council, amid concerns young people are not coming forward for their jabs.

In an update from South East London Clinical Commissioning Group last week councillors and officers were told that vaccination rates continued to improve across key age groups, but no data on the proportion of younger people was shared.

At least ninety per cent of care home residents; 82 per cent of over70s; 70 per cent of age 65-69s; and 76 per cent of people aged 60-69; 73 per cent of over-50s; and 60 per cent of 40-49 year-olds have now been vaccinated.

After opening up the vaccination programme to the under 30s and holding several mass vaccination events - including successful all-day sessions at the Oval and Millwall’s football ground, the CCG said it had been facing difficulties getting hold of enough Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTec

vaccines to meet demand, and in the last week had been focused on using up its Oxford/AstraZeneca supply by ensuring those yet to receive their second jab were booked in.

Across the country there has been mounting concern that a significant proportion of young people have been rejecting the vaccine.

Data published last week showed under 60 per cent of people aged 18 to 25 had received a first dose in England.

Hospitals across the country have reported a rise in younger, unvaccinated COVID-19 patients.

Although they are far more likely to recover quickly and not need intensive care, they can still become significantly unwell, develop long COVID symptoms, and impact on the NHS’s ability to recover from the impact of the pandemic.

Earlier this month the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, said 60 per cent of those admitted to hospital with COVID-19 currently had not been vaccinated.

Despite these concerns there has been cause for cautious optimism.

As of Tuesday new COVID-19 cases had fallen for the seventh day in a row, leading to the possibility that this wave may have already peaked.

Three-year-old injured in Camberwell ‘e-scooter crash is recovering at home’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A three-year-old girl seriously injured after being ‘hit’ by an e-scooter in Camberwell is now recovering at home, police have confirmed.

The child was injured in a collision in Myatt’s Fields Park on the evening of Monday, July 19.

After being taken to hospital she quickly deteriorated and was described as having sustained ‘lifechanging injuries’ in the crash.

Officers say she has now been discharged from hospital and is back at home with her family, but were unable to provide any further details about the severity of her injuries.

Last week we reported that police were calling for the e-scooter rider to come forward.

It is believed he had stopped at the scene and apologised to the girl’s mother before leaving the park.

But despite a public appeal he has yet to hand himself in or be identified.

It is illegal to ride privately owned e-scooters on public land but some boroughs - including Southwark - are now part of a hire trial where those hired from central London can be ridden through on roads, cycle lanes and cycle paths but not pavements.

The trial was announced by TfL earlier this month.

There have been a number of serious incidents involving e-scooters across London in recent weeks.

Along with a man left unconscious in the road in Rotherhithe after being allegedly knocked out by an e-scooter illegally riding on the pavement earlier this month, a teenager was killed in Bromley after he was hit by a car while riding an e-scooter, on July 18.

Manze’s Tower Bridge Pie ‘n’ Mash shop was forced to close until ‘at least’ Friday and multiple calls were made to Southwark Council reporting rising water and blocked drains across SE16 and SE17. Seven Islands Leisure Centre and swimming pool was affected and forced to close on Monday, while Camberwell New Road temporarily turned into a river after a particularly heavy downpour the same day.

London recorded around a month’s worth of rainfall in 24 hours on Sunday, with areas in the north and east severely affected.

Pudding Mill Lane DLR station was almost completely submerged, Whipps Cross Hospital left without power, and patients warned not to attend Newham Hospital as around

100 patients were being evacuated from affected wards.

London Fire Brigade says it has taken more than a thousand calls about the downpours.

Its crews helped rescue people trapped in cars and submerged homes, prioritising the hardest-hit areas where there was a clear risk to life, including in South Woodford, Leytonstone and Stratford.In a tweet, the London Green Party said the floods, which have come after 30 degree temperatures, are indicative of the climate crisis.

"The climate emergency is already causing havoc. We need to make our city resilient to climate change - and stop climate-wrecking projects like the Silvertown tunnel," the party said.

Streets across Southwark were overflowing after Sunday’s deluge of rain, as localised flooding forced some businesses to close.

Camberwell residents petition against council home plan

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly three hundred people have signed a petition pleading with Southwark Council not to build on a patch of greenery in Camberwell's Elmington Estate.

The estate is one of 28 across the borough with proposals for new ‘infill’ homes. Southwark Council aims to build 22 social rent flats on the site, which backs onto a block in Brisbane Street.

Residents previously had the right to access the green space - now walled off and padlocked - as a communal garden.

It is also named in the deeds of one leaseholder's flat.

The new block would be five storeys high and include nine one-bed flats, six two-beds (two of which would be wheelchair accessible) and seven three-beds.

Since being closed off a number of years ago the site has grown trees and become part of what Southwark Nature Action Volunteers, who are against the infill scheme, say is a valuable ‘green corridor’ linking Burgess Park with Camberwell Green. They would like to see it turned into a wildlife garden for residents and the trees protected from felling.

“We support the building of muchneeded new council homes, but it has also been proven that living close to trees and green spaces is very important for people’s physical and mental health,” they explain in their online petition.

area will soon increase due to other projects, with two development sites on Lomond Grove for up to 89 new homes, and up to 160 on the nowclosed Camberwell magistrates’ court.

“The council should be protecting and enhancing green space to meet the needs of this rising population, not destroying it.

“Take the padlock off the gate, clean it up and maintain it. This woodland should be opened up for local people to enjoy, as it once was.”

Fourteen trees would need to be cut down to make way for the development, but the council has pledged to plant eighteen more in the area ‘immediately surrounding’ the site, including in the wider estate.

Elmington Estate resident and council tenant Catalina is one of the residents calling for a rethink.

“I live with my mum and sister. All three of us are opposed to the plan to build on the woodlands," she said.

“We all love nature watching and appreciate our local wildlife. We are also first-floor residents and so don’t have access to a personal garden. We dream of having a garden. Because of this, any access to green space around the area is greatly appreciated.”

Southwark Council’s planning application has received 25 public comments on its online planning portal, only one of which is in favour of the redevelopment as it currently stands.

One objector explained: “This past year has shown how invaluable local green space is, and being able to see tree tops from my window has been a

true joy that has helped me to manage the anxiety and frustration of spending so much time at home.

“This development will take away both the views of trees and the utility of a public green space closest to my home... I have heard project representatives say that this area of woodland is not well used and so would not be missed.

“This is not true; as I describe above, they are the thing that made me want to move to my flat and live in this area.

“Furthermore, the area was walled in several years ago and rarely maintained, so of course litter accumulated.

“A better use would be to open it up, combine it with the green space, and create a well managed park, along the lines of the nearby Benhill Road Nature Garden.”

The project is part of Southwark Council’s ‘New Homes Delivery Programme, which aims to build 11,000 social housing units by 2030.

Anti-infilling campaigners plan to ‘occupy Peckham Green’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Protestors will gather in Peckham this Saturday to demonstrate against Southwark Council’s plans for two new housing blocks on Peckham Green, a park that isn’t a park - according to the local authority.

Construction is expected to start as early as next month after planning permission was approved in 2019 for 168 new homes across the entire redevelopment. The project is due for completion in August 2023.

One-hundred-and-twenty are planned on the green, officially known as the Flaxyard site, with the remainder planned for a redevelopment in Sumner House and a vacant corner plot at the Junction of Peckham High Street and Melon Road.

As we reported in May of this year, out of the 120, 96 would be for social rent, with another 24 put up for shared ownership.

On Saturday, campaigners from across the borough will ‘occupy Peckham Green’ and call on the local authority to scrap the plans.

They say the green is clearly a public park and has been used that way by the community for decades, and that the proposals are another example of controversial ‘infilling’.

However, the site is not formally designated as a public park and therefore has not been afforded the same protections against development.

In planning documents, the green is listed as the ‘Flaxyard site’, named after its former private owners. It was bought by

Southwark Council in 1995 after a planned commercial development was cancelled.

It was later identified as a terminus for the mooted Cross River Tram and bus interchange which was shelved after political opposition.

In 1999 planning consent was given to change the site’s designation from a derelict residential site to temporary open public space pending any future development.

In the current Southwark Plan essentially a planning strategy for the borough’s future - it is designated for ‘mixed-use residential’ development.

Later, it was earmarked for a Clarion Housing Association scheme but this was scrapped in favour of the local authority directly developing its site after it ended its partnership with the association.

If work goes ahead next month, two new buildings of four storeys and between four and six storeys will be built on the 1.4 acre patch of land next to Sumner Estate.

In a statement sent to the News, the event’s organisers ‘Save Peckham Green’ told the us they were supportive of new social housing being built but not on green space: “You don’t build on parks in one of the poorest, most polluted areas of Southwark, with already the one of lowest amounts of greenspace per resident in the borough.

“You don’t build on parks in the age of climate change, or in the time of pandemic.

You don’t build on parks even if you are building needed housing.

“As residents on estates, we support social housing but not by building on vital green space.”

CPRE, the countryside charity, has

also voiced its opposition to the plans, describing it as a ‘damaging development’ and a ‘huge loss for the community’.

Infill homes are essentially new flats shoehorned into pre-existing estates described by the council as ‘unused’ or ‘underused’. Some blocks are seeing new storeys added on top.

As we reported last week, Southwark’s Liberal Democrats have come out against infill projects, instead calling on the council to give estates’ green and communal space more protections.

This week, Southwark Green Party told the News that it could support ‘some sensitive infill projects on genuine brownfield sites’ but that building on inner city parks, gardens, ball courts and sports pitches is unacceptable.

The party - which has previously supported estate-wide ballots on regeneration and advocates a

refurbishment before demolition and redevelopment policy - said: “Parks, gardens and ball courts are not spare land.

“This space and facilities are built into the design of estates in lieu of private gardens and open spaces.

“These schemes effectively ask those with the least to give up the most.”

The Greens believe stakeholders are often overlooked during consultations, with residents only becoming aware of complex proposals at late stages. Another key concern is how the council’s infill plans align with its climate action, as concreting over green space increases flood risk as well as the biodiversity of mature trees.

The party supports better enforcement of the 35 per cent affordable housing pledge for private developments and prioritising renovating empty properties across the borough.

Last week we reported that campaigners

were left dismayed by the council’s refusal to stop and reconsider similar developments in Little Dodson and Bells Gardens. Both groups have vowed to continue their fight.

Southwark Council is increasingly offering residents a ballot on future largescale regeneration projects, as evidenced in recent polls at Ledbury and Tustin estates. Yet residents are not given a ballot on infill plans.

This week the News asked Cllr Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for council homes and homelessness, why this was the case and whether the council would commit to offering a ballot on infilling. At the time of going to press, we had received no reply.

At a council assembly meeting earlier this month she had vowed to continue working with residents and ensure any proposals were ‘tweaked’ where possible, but reiterated the stark need for new housing in a borough with 15,000 on the housing waiting list.

Alongside continually losing council homes through right-to-buy, a national policy over which it has no control, the council is also forced to grapple with overinflated land prices in a borough that has seen something of a gold rush in recent years.

With landlowers wildly speculating, the council has had something of a headache when it comes to buying sites suitable for large developments.

In one example, from 2019, a site valued at around £5 million came onto the market suitable for new council housing, but its owners gave a ‘guide price’ of £25 million before eventually withdrawing from the market.

Help shape the final phase of a brand new sports facility based in Borough

Bankside Open Spaces Trust (BOST) has gained funding from Southwark Council to add a new building and extra sports facilities for Marlborough Sports Garden on Union Street, just off Borough High Street.

The new plans, drawn up with architects Cullinan Studio, include plants and trees to increase shade and combat pollution, seating for spectators, a café - and climbable walls with slides down the other side.

Jack Harrison, Sports Development Manager at BOST said: “We are excited to work with Cullinan Studio and Southwark Council to complete the final phase of the Marlborough Sports

Garden. Through the project, we aim to support the health and well-being of local residents by creating a sustainable, attractively designed and well-managed community space.

Camberwell-born England football star Jadon Sancho has joined Manchester United, after months of speculation.

Sancho, 21, moved to the Red Devils from Borussia Dortmund, whom he signed for in 2017 as an unproven teenager. He made 137 appearances for the German club in all competitions, scoring 50 goals and assisting 64 more, and is considered

one of the best young attacking players in the world.

Manchester United announced the deal last Friday, July 23, with Sancho signing a five-year contract with an option for a year's extension.

He said: "I’ll always be grateful to Dortmund for giving me the opportunity to play first team football, although I always knew that I would return to England one day. The chance to join Manchester United is a dream come true and I just cannot wait to perform in the Premier League.

"This is a young and exciting squad and I know, together, we can develop into something special to bring the success that the fans deserve. I am

looking forward to working with the Manager and his coaching team to further develop my game.”

Sancho came through the youth academy of Manchester United's rivals Manchester City, although he never made a competitive first-team appearance for the side.

He helped England get to the final of Euro 2020, making three appearances off the bench. He was one of three players who missed penalties in the shootout against Italy and was forced to endure racist abuse in the aftermath.

In recognition of Sancho's efforts, Southwark Council announced earlier this month that it intended to give him the freedom of the borough.

Immigration centre replaced by 27-storey tower

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A 27-storey office block across the street from London Bridge Station has been given the green light - an increase of twenty floors on the building currently on the site.

Developers EDGE got the goahead from Southwark councillors at the planning meeting on Tuesday evening (20 July) for the block on the site of Becket House, a seven-storey building which holds a Home Office immigration centre. Home Office plans to move to the Royal Docks in Newham fell through unexpectedly and EDGE have agreed not to begin work on the new building until a new site for the immigration centre is found.

Planning officer Terence Maclellan praised the design benefits of the St

Thomas's Street scheme and said that Becket House had limited architectural quality. Officers said in their report, submitted before the meeting: "The design of the new office building is considered to be of the highest quality befitting of a building of this scale in such a central London location where the standard of new development architecture is one of excellence."

The block would have room for 1,900 office workers, as well as some shops on the ground floor. Nearby Melior Park would be expanded as part of the plans.

Representatives of some local groups spoke at the meeting to oppose the project, arguing that the building would be too tall and the design was out of character for the local area.

Locals sent some 75 letters of objection to the council ahead of the planning meeting, as well as twelve in favour.

Planning officers noted that "the daylight/sunlight impacts on a small number of residential properties closest to the site are significant."

One comment on the planning application called the plans "clumsy and ugly", arguing that the building would "dominate the area", despite the Shard being nearby.

"The charm of old Bermondsey and in particular Bermondsey Street will be massively affected with this dominating the skyline and will be visible from all the lovely little parks close by. Bermondsey Street is successful because of its old world charm. Our heritage sites need to be protected by overdevelopment in the area."

It comes after developers CIT submitted plans for a 97-metre tower on nearby Vinegar Yard in May this year.

Notting Hill Genesis has launched a consultation into the next stage of the Aylesbury Estate regeneration, with new proposals including an increase in housing.

Known as ‘Phase 2B’, the plans cover a section of the estate in Albany Road, overlooking Burgess Park. They encompass Wendover block numbers 241-471; Winslow; Padbury and Ravenstone; the east side of Thurlow Street; and Bagshot Street up to Kinglake Street.

The original masterplan, agreed in 2015 between Notting Hill Genesis and Southwark Council, was for 490 new homes on this specific site, but the new proposals detail 600 new homes, with ‘a target’ of half of them being classed as affordable housing.

The affordable homes would be split into three-quarters at social rent and the remaining 25 per cent for sale under a shared ownership scheme.

One key change between the draft

plans first shared in 2016 and the current update is an increase in building height to accommodate the extra homes within a series of ‘mansion blocks’ and one tower. A 20-storey tower is now detailed as having five extra storeys, and the Thurlow Street frontage will gain one floor.

There would also be a new park with play areas, public space, greenery and ground floor space for ‘commercial or community use’.

A planning application is expected to be submitted by next spring, with any future demolition not beginning earlier than at the end of the same year.

In the interim, Southwark Council will be working with residents to find them new homes before the new estate’s completion.

A new website details the plans and can be used by residents and the wider community to share their views.

Eight men charged after drug raids across Southwark

An eight-month investigation led to arrests

The News was at the scene of the warrants early last Wednesday morning; the culmination of an eightmonth long investigation.

Ismael Abourahman, 39 from Avondale Rise, SE15 was charged with supplying and offering to supply crack cocaine and possessing and supplying cannabis. He has pleaded not guilty to all offences except the cannabis possession.

Twenty-five-year-old Rushard Brown, from Peckham’s Hastings Close, faces crack cocaine, cannabis

and criminal property charges. He has pleaded not guilty to all offences except the charge of cannabis possession.

Akeem Thomas, aged 25 and from Elmington Estate’s Brisbane Street was charged with supplying crack cocaine and faces a criminal property charge.

Also charged with crack cocaine

charges is fifty-five-year-old Birol Salih from King Arthur Close in Peckham.

All will next appear at Inner London Crown Court on Thursday, August 19.

Three other adult men were charged on Thursday, 22 July and appeared at Croydon Magistrates’ Court the same day. They are also due to appear

Forty-four-year-old Berris Manning from Peckham Park Road faces heroin and crack cocaine charges, as does Dwight Merrick, aged 41, from Walworth’s Hopwood Road.

Osahon Okunbowa, aged 29, from

Pelier Estate’s Olney Road, pleaded guilty to supplying heroin and crack cocaine. He will be sentenced at Inner London Crown Court at a later date.

Two teenagers who cannot be named for legal reasons were also arrested.

A sixteen-year-old boy was charged with supplying crack cocaine and possession with intent to supply cannabis. He pleaded not guilty and has now been bailed to appear at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 31 August.

Another sixteen-year-old was arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs and has since been released under investigation.

Two adult men have also been released under investigation: two 21-year-olds arrested on suspicion of being concerned in the supply of a Class A drug.

A 52-year-old man arrested on suspicion of supplying crack cocaine will face no further action and neither will a 29-year-old man arrested on suspicion of supplying Class A and being in possession of Class B drugs.

East Dulwich man begs for bus stop change after 'years' of sleepless nights

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk An East Dulwich man has said he has struggled to sleep for seven years because of bus drivers taking noisy breaks outside his house in the middle of the night.

The number 12 bus stops near the back garden of the house where the resident, who asked to remain nameless, lives with his wife and two children. He has lived there for twenty years and said the noise of the drivers shouting and swearing while they take their breaks day and night has been “unbearable” at times, and the smell of cigarette smoke means they have often chosen to keep their windows shut, even in hot weather.

He works in private security, which means he has to get up at 4.30am to go to work. He said the noise made by the bus drivers on their breaks has had an effect on his work.

“You need your wits about you in my job,” he said. “It’s difficult when you don’t get too much sleep.

“It’s got a lot worse recently. Especially during the summer, the noise can make it impossible to sleep”.

His wife’s sleep is also disrupted by the drivers. Their children, aged twelve and eight, sleep on the other side of the property so are less affected by the noise at night, but he has to tell them not to listen to the drivers’ swearing.

He said he had asked for the bus drivers to be quieter and has been verbally

abused in response on several occasions.

He has also complained to TfL for several years, without getting much of a response, he said. He asked for the bus stop where the drivers take their breaks to be moved but was told this was not possible.

Tom Cunnington, TfL’s Head of bus business development, said: “I am sorry to hear that [this man] and his family have experienced this behaviour. While it is important for driver wellbeing that they have a short break between trips we expect them to behave respectfully.

“Each of the bus operators has a code of conduct for their staff, and we are making it a priority to speak to the operator concerned to make sure that their staff comply.”

Images of a man sought in connection with a sexual assault on a London Bridge train have been circulated by British Transport Police.

The victim, a woman, boarded the train at London Bridge just before 11pm on Friday, February 26.

She was assaulted by a man who had boarded shortly after and sat in the same carriage, before later disembarking at Hither Green

Station.

Officers say he had tried to engage her in conversation before moving closer and laying down on some seats opposite before the attack.

British Transport Police say the man pictured in the CCTV images may have information which could help their investigation.

East Dulwich woman stabbed to death, 44-year-old charged

Last Sunday, July 25, police confirmed that Stony Stoica, from Lordship Lane, has been charged with her murder.

The 44-year-old appeared in custody at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Monday, July 26.

Beatrice, 36, was found critically injured at a residential address in Lordship Lane when police were called shortly after 10pm on Friday, July 23.

She died in hospital four hours later.

A post-mortem examination was held at the weekend.

Sir Jack Petchey, who celebrated the milestone this Monday, July 19, is offering a cash prize of £500 to someone in London and Essex who presents the most compelling vision of how the world will look in 96 years time.

Sir Jack’s Forward to the Future competition is open for entries from now until September 30. Entries can include writing, art, videos, music, photography and anything else that explores the topic of a positive vision of life in 2117.

Bermondsey and Rotherhithe schools take part in 'booknic' to promote reading More than 300 children in Bermondsey and Rotherhithe have taken part in a fun outdoor event to encourage reading among young people.

The 'booknic', organised by the Surrey Quays shopping centre and the National Literacy Trust, included children from Galleywall Primary School, Ilderton Primary School and St John's RC Primary School.

The day combined reading with a picnic and the schools also had access to virtual interactive storytelling sessions and a literary quiz.

Ian Moore, centre manager at Surrey Quays, said: “Supporting our community is so important to us and the Young Readers Programme plays a massive part in that. It’s a brilliant

initiative which we look forward to every year and it’s great to see the children celebrating at our booknic event.

“Thanks also needs to go to the National Literacy Trust for their hard work on this event and over the years.

They’ve helped us to ensure that the additional support and books go to those who need them most.”

British Land, which owns the shopping centre, and the National Literacy Trust celebrate the tenth year of their Young Readers partnership. Since the programme launched it has supported more than 2,350 schoolchildren and seen more than 7,000 books donated.

Over the past year the shopping centre has also given 550 books

to local food banks, charities and community organisations to get children access to books during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Hala and Lorraine, who both only learned to cycle as adults, are being recognised for their work promoting cycling among women at a grassroots level.

Lorraine first got on a bike in her 40s and now cycles everywhere. She promotes cycling on social media and is one of Cycling UK's digital champions.

Hala, 31, learned how to cycle two years ago. She now volunteers and serves as a trustee for The Bike Project, a Southwark-based charity that gives bicycles to refugees.

More women have taken up cycling since the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, but men are still much more likely to cycle.

The Skills Centre in Rotherhithe is running the fifteen-day scheme to boost employment prospects and the general level of construction skills in the area.

Anyone who takes part in the programme will get job interviews for big building projects in Southwark and neighbouring boroughs.

CEO of The Skills Centre Jon Howlin said: “We have a massive construction skills shortage at the moment, with the pandemic as well as Brexit leaving many major contractors without the manpower to fulfil the needs they have on site. While at Centrepoint she was able to go back to her studies, both at college and university, was nominated for a music award and worked in the film industry and for the charity that helped her.

She Oath was launched with support from Launch It Trust, Blagrave Trust and Paul Hamlyn Foundation.

Teann, an assistant interior designer who has been supported by She Oath said of the scheme: “I’ve come so far, at such a young age which is crazy but I owe it a lot to She Oath, because if I didn’t have that self assurance from a year ago.”

Our man columba is going for gold in tokyo

kit@southwarknews.co.uk An East Dulwich man has been chosen to compete at the Paralympics in Tokyo next month.

Columba Blango Jr., who grew up in the area, is going to run in the 400 metres in the T20 category, for people with intellectual disabilities.

Columba Jr. said he was excited but not nervous about taking part in his first Paralympics.

"My passion helps me see track and field as fun," he told the News. "I'm simply enjoying the moment, and looking to do the best I can. That helps me stay grounded and be calm."

Columba Jr. qualifies for the Paralympics because of some cognitive issues resulting from a difficult birth.

He was in intensive care for about four weeks when he was born, after suffering blood clots on his brain.

He was unable to speak until the age of six, but therapy and help from staff at St John’s Roman Catholic Primary School in Rotherhithe meant he was largely able to overcome his problems later on, although some issues remain, according to his father Columba Sr., a former Olympic athlete, Liberal Democrat councillor and mayor of Southwark.

Columba Jr., 29, is at the older end of the peak age range for sprinters. Daniel Martins, the Brazilian athlete who won the T20 400 metres gold medal in 2016, was just 20 at the time. Wayde

Columba Jr. training at the European Para Athletics championships in June van Niekerk and Kirani James, the last two winners of the 400 metres at the Olympics, were 24 and 19 respectively at the time of their victories.

Nevertheless, Columba Jr. is convinced that his age is not a barrier to success.

"I don’t think it’s a matter of age, it's just about the level of sport you're at, really. I've been working at this for so long and it was the passion that took me through. I enjoy what I do, it’s

something that I love to do."

Nor did he ever think that his developmental issues should be considered an insurmountable problem.

"I wouldn’t call it a struggle," he said.

"It's more like an obstacle, just like every other obstacle that everyone has in life. I work on each and every barrier that I come across. I wouldn’t say that [the cognitive problems] are difficult. As long as I work hard every day, tomorrow success will be easy to come by".

Columba Jr. is coming into the Paralympics in top form. He won gold and broke the European record for T20 400 metres in June at the European Para Athletics Championships, with a time of 47.9 seconds. At the last Paralympics that time would have seen him collect a bronze medal and finish just 0.7 seconds off a gold.

But he says he is not thinking too much about more medals just yet.

"First and foremost, participation in

the Games is the number one. Taking part against other top competitors is also a big thing for me. The competition itself gets me going. I don’t think about the actual award I till I get there. I just take all the right steps to get ready and take things one day at a time".

Columba Jr. said he has fond memories of his childhood in East Dulwich, running around and playing outside, before becoming an athlete was something he even thought about.

Coming from a Sierra Leonean family, he said it was eye-opening to go to school in Rotherhithe, where many children came from different backgrounds to his own.

"It wasn’t such a mix at the time, it was a minority of black people in a dominant white area. I've seen both sides of where I am, I've got to know people from different backgrounds and that means I can understand different perspectives on life. I believe that’s important."

When he's not competing in races around the world, Columba Jr. still lives with his family in East Dulwich and works part-time at Primark in Peckham. Asked whether the people he works with are proud of his feats, he said: "My colleagues didn't know about my achievements until recently! They didn’t know how far I had gone."

Columba Jr's first race will be the 400 metre heats on August 30. If he gets through, the final is the following evening. The Paralympics will be shown on Channel 4.

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Rye Lane is set to reopen to buses and deliveries as COVID-19 restrictions are coming to an end.

No exact date has been given but Southwark Council says the changes should come into force this September.

The thoroughfare through Peckham was closed during the pandemic to help aid social distancing; a decision now under review by Tooley Street.

Southwark Council and TfL say they are aiming to trial the partial reopening which will keep the road closed to other motor traffic - for eighteen months. They say the move is based on feedback from local businesses.

A consultation will take place in around six months with a formal decision on the road’s future made before the end of the trial period. If starting from this autumn, this would be in spring-time 2023.

Rye Lane was closed in the summer of 2020 to help aid social distancing but has also improved safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

In a formal statement issued last week, the council admitted that some traders have struggled with the change and lost customers who would normally travel by bus.

Tooley Street sees allowing buses back through the area as a ‘compromise’ that will help the high street’s economic recovery, too.

for transport, parks and sport, said: “We’ve been working with and listening to many local people since the emergency closure of Rye Lane last summer. We are committed to helping small businesses to thrive and encouraging more people back to the high streets.

“However, we also need more people to walk and cycle, store their bike safely and use public transport more. Making the bus network more efficient for everyone helps us to restore confidence as people return to work and school in the autumn.

“Buses are low emission vehicles that

help people connect with trains and other public services in the area. We are working towards a safer, cleaner Rye Lane for everybody.

“It is also important to remember that COVID-19 hasn’t gone away and we need to continue to make more space on our pavements for social distancing, to help keep everyone safe. We are continuing our work with the local community, and they will be involved in any further decisions, moving forward.”

Rotherhithe Tunnel 'could be closed' without £120m

In response to a question about how the agency would fund the Rotherhithe Tunnel upgrade, Mr Powell said that TfL's financial situation is "very difficult".

"We only have very short-term funding from government in order to maintain the essential services that TfL provides," he added. "Those essential services are for public transport services but they also include the highways for which TfL has responsibility and indeed the structures for those highways like bridges. And at the moment we only have a very short-term funding horizon through to the beginning of December."

Mr Powell added that having long-term funding in place means that TfL can plan proactive repairs, which would mean they can be done at times when they are less likely to be disruptive. Without a clear idea of where the money is going to come from, repairs have to be done reactively - which means they are less likely to be planned and more likely to cause unwelcome disruptions, he said.

"As you can imagine, when funding is tight, those issues can easily be deferred as they have been in the past. At present during the pandemic, TfL’s financial situation is suhc

"What’s really needed is to have a long-term funding settlement that recognises the nature and the state and the importance of the assets in London’s transport system, and is enabled therefore to put sustainable funding so that planning can take place so that all of these interventions can be coordinated and so that they can take place at the right time for those assets, which will reduce the overall whole-life cost of maintaining and improving those assets."

The Department for Transport said at the time of the funding deal that TfL must take steps to become financially sustainable.

A ministry spokesperson said in response to Mr Powell's comments: "TfL are responsible for the maintenance of its assets, including Rotherhithe Tunnel and Vauxhall Bridge.

“This Government has repeatedly shown its commitment to transport in London throughout the pandemic, including with the most recent extraordinary funding agreement worth £1.08bn.

“These support packages are fair to taxpayers, ensuring action is taken to put TfL on the path to long-term financial sustainability.”

“Children can breathe cleaner air, in a borough plagued by pollution.”

Jack Baker questioned how the council could measure accurately whether the return of buses or end of social distancing restrictions were behind any changes in footfall if the trial were to start in the coming weeks, saying he was ‘really disappointed’ and the trial would ‘put cyclists and pedestrians at risk’, while Ellen Gibson tweeted: “For me, having a pedestrianised Rye Lane has been lush, but the bus route disruption hasn't been ideal. I'd love to see maybe a one-way bus lane plus widened pavements and a segregated cycle lane. Definitely can't go back to what it was before.”

Consultations on other traffic schemes across Peckham and Nunhead will also take place during the Rye Lane bus trial, Southwark Council confirmed.

Woman and two children rescued from tower blaze

Rotherhithe Tunnel is in "urgent" need of a £120m renovation, according to a senior Transport for London (Tfl) manager.

The tunnel, which was built in 1908, may be forced to close to all traffic for safety reasons if funding cannot be found for the upgrades. At the moment only vehicles less than two metres high and wide and weighing below two tonnes are allowed to drive through the tunnel.

Gareth Powell, managing director for surface transport at TfL, told the London Assembly's transport committee on Monday, July 19, that the tunnel is the river crossing most in need of repair, followed by Vauxhall Bridge.

"The Rotherhithe Tunnel was built many years ago for a different type of purpose," he said. "At the moment the systems within that tunnel are in urgent need of an upgrade.

That is one of the reasons why there are restrictions around the type of vehicle that can enter and go through that tunnel at the moment. That’s in order that we can continue to operate the tunnel safely."

He added that TfL has "a very advanced plan being developed" to make the changes, but that the transport agency needs longterm guarantees over funding to carry out the project - which had a cost he estimated at £120m.

TfL has struggled with a massive loss of revenue in the Covid-19 pandemic, with income from public transport plummeting last year due to the lockdown. Its latest funding settlement with the government saw the agency receive £1.08bn through to December, provided it makes £300m worth of savings by 2022 and finds other revenue streams worth between £500m and £1b by 2023. TfL papers from June show that

have petitioned against Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and other schemes, but received strong criticism from road safety and cycling campaigners.

Rye Lane Pedestrianisation, a group with between 20-30 members which has lobbied for the road to remain closed to all traffic, said it was ‘deeply saddened’ by the decision; describing it as a ‘major step back’. “In the year since the council opened Rye Lane to pedestrians and cyclists, there has been a visible increase in the number of residents and commuters enjoying Rye Lane and its attractions,” said chair Chris Cawley, in a statement shared with the News.

“Peckham is renowned for its community spirit and vibrant culture and by removing street space for residents to walk, meet and shop, Southwark Council is placing a cap on the economic and community growth potential of Peckham.

“The council’s suggestion that the removal of buses had led to businesses struggling, we believe, is unfounded. Little in the way of evidence or research has been presented from the council which should form the basis of its decision.”

The group said there were no publicly available comparisons from before or after the pandemic to measure the true impact of pedestrianising the street, and has called for more through research now most restrictions have been lifted, adding: “It would make little sense to return the road to its previous format, only then to consult on by-gone changes.”

The fire, which took place in Galleywall Road, destroyed a fourroom flat on the fourth floor of a residential tower. Firefighters rescued a man, a woman and two children from a flat on the floor above. Another man, woman and teenager left before the crews arrived. They were all assessed at the scene by London Ambulance Service crews.

The fire brigade was called shortly

after 5.30 in the morning. Crews from Deptford, Dockhead, Peckham, Old Kent Road and New Cross stations rushed to the scene. The fire was out by about 6.10am. The cause is unknown and firefighters are investigating.

The four people rescued from their flat were brought down using fire escape hoods, the London Fire Brigade said. These give people up to fifteen minutes' protection from four of the main gases caused by fires carbon monoxide, hydrogen cyanide, hydrogen chloride and acrolein.

The hoods can be worn by even if someone is unconscious. They do not provide oxygen but temporarily filter toxic smoke to make breathing easier.

ires, floods and droughts, in recent weeks we have seen almost daily news of devastating extreme weather events around the world.

Following record temperatures, much of the western United States and Canada are seeing enormous wildfires raging out of control.

Meanwhile we see unprecedented rainfall in China, India, Germany and Belgium ending in flooding and tragedy for so many towns and cities.

More worryingly still, climate scientists have responded by expressing their shock that these extreme weather events are arriving so much faster than their modelling of global warming had predicted. The short time we had to avert a climate crisis may be even shorter.

Here in London we’ve had our own heatwave and torrential downpours. With floods around London showing just how quickly extreme weather can overwhelm our city too.

With nearly two thirds of Southwark within ten meters of sea level, the likelihood of global warming leading to a tragedy within our own borough is very real.

For all these reasons, we have declared a Climate Emergency in Southwark and set our ambition to end Southwark’s contribution to global warming by 2030.

We have already made real progress. As a Labour admiration we have already halved the council’s carbon emissions from all of our operational estate, now we working to end them by 2030.

However, the council is only directly responsible for twelve per cent of carbon emissions in the borough. So our plan also aims to bring together residents, businesses and key organisations to get the whole of Southwark to zero-carbon.

It is a huge task. Our analysis has shown it will take over £4 billion of investment in Southwark alone.

That’s a bill we will only be able to

meet if the government takes this issue seriously too, and invests in the change needed to green our county’s buildings, streets, energy and businesses. That an enormous price ticket, but it is an essential investment if we are to protect the future of our children and grandchildren. It is also a once in a millennia opportunity to build a better, fairer Britain too.

As a council we are leading by example. We have decarbonised the electricity used by all our public buildings and offices. We have ensured all of our nearly £2 billion pension fund is not directly investing in any carbonintensive funds and reduced its carbon footprint by 43 per cent.

We will entirely decarbonise the pension fund by 2030. At our council assembly meeting this month we also changed the very constitution of the council as a whole to ensure all our decisions consider our impact on the climate.

We are also making sure more carbon is naturally taken out of our air. Last year we planted over 8,000 new trees in Southwark, adding to the fact that our borough already has the highest tree coverage in central London. More broadly, we have invested over £61 million in improving and expanding our Southwark parks since 2010. It’s been wonderful to see the brand new Elephant Park being used by so many people this summer.

I’m delighted to say we have four more new parks planned in Southwark, one at Canada Water and three along the Old Kent Road. With our nature action plan also setting out how we will create 17 new Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation (SINCs) as well new wildflower meadows, native hedgerows and more across the borough.

We’re working to clean up our air too, so we can cut carbon emissions and make our streets healthier. We have now rolled out 31 ‘school streets’ where roads are closed at particular times to

reduce children’s exposure to harmful fumes and to make it safer and easier to do the school run by foot or peddle. We are doubling the number of bike hangers, so more people have secure places to keep their bike near home and rolling out electric vehicle charring points within walking distance of every home too.

We are also bringing green low carbon energy to our estates, investing £150 million to upgrade our heat networks. Including installing heat pumps that capture heat in water under the ground and pump it up to our council homes, in place of ageing gas boilers. Work on our first three pilot estates is already underway, and we will be looking to go further and faster over the coming years.

We know there is much more to do, and that this is just the beginning. That’s why at this month’s cabinet we published our new Climate Strategy and Action Plan, to set out the challenges in front of us and how we might tackle them further. We want to do this in partnership with residents and help us decide how we can best use our limited resources to reduce the carbon produced across the borough.

Our action plan is not the final word - shortly you will see us begin the process of establishing a Citizen’s Jury to help us improve and prioritise decisions to help us go further and faster in the fairest way possible.

The challenge is enormous, but we are committed to work together with you to make Southwark a greener, fairer and carbon neutral borough.

Government is reckless to remove nearly all restrictions at once

T

he COVID-19 pandemic has taken an enormous toll on families up and down the country who have been bereaved or suffered long term health impacts; and the economic impacts have also hit people very hard with many sectors of the economy effectively shut down due to COVID restrictions.

As the vaccine rollout is reducing the risks of COVID-19, I hope we can slowly start to get back to a more familiar pattern of life. However, like many people, I am concerned that the government’s approach to removing almost all restrictions at once, at a time when COVID-19 infections have been increasing is reckless and not the right way to secure our economic recovery.

I’m glad that our mayor, Sadiq Khan, has decided that passengers must continue to wear masks on London buses, the underground and London overground. For most of us, wearing a mask is an easy thing to do, but it makes a huge difference to how safe and confident many people feel in public places, especially those who have compromised immunity or are unable to take the vaccine. I am continuing to wear a mask not only on public transport but in all crowded, enclosed public venues.

Like so many people I am grateful to have had both of my jabs. I strongly encourage anyone who hasn’t yet been vaccinated to do so. There are drop-in vaccine

There have been many challenges for our schools since the beginning of the pandemic and I know that the end of this school summer term has come as a welcome relief for many teachers, parents and students. After such a tough time during the pandemic I know that the government’s decision to freeze teachers’ pay – a real terms pay cut at the end of the hardest year imaginable - is a huge blow, as it is for so many other frontline public sector workers who have worked tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

Last year the Conservative government made a complete mess of both GCSE and A-level results and I will be keeping a very close eye on this year’s results as well as keeping my fingers crossed for every student who is due to receive their results next month.

Our children and young people desperately need a fully funded catch up programme, but despite appointing an education catch-up czar to devise a plan, they refused to fund it, forcing Kevan Collins to resign in disgust. Our mayor and our local councils are working hard to deliver an exciting programme of activities for children and young people this summer, but I will continue to press the Tories hard to ensure that no child or young person is left behind.

The real costs of building 11,000 new council homes

I

n 2014 Southwark Labour had its best local election results in 30 years, taking 48 seats. By 2018 they had almost routed the Liberal Democrats from the borough, and had seen off the Tories. It was a remarkable turnaround given that the council had been controlled by a Lib Dem-Tory coalition until 2010.

Labour had some eye-catching manifesto pledges during that time, including the free gym and swim and theatre trip for children initiatives. One key pledge has, however, always stood out: building 11,000 new council homes.

Overall the target is for 11,000 built by 2043, with at least 2,500 of these built or under construction by next year. It was only in March 2020 that voters first heard exactly how - and where - these homes would be constructed with the publication of the ‘New Homes Delivery Plan’.

This paper outlines some of the key financial and regulatory constraints faced by the local authority. They are certainly numerous and difficult to overcome.

The council is powerless to stem the loss of homes through right to buy. It has next to no control over the private rental market, other than enforcing standards - which involves costly court battles - and already has one of the largest social housing stocks in London, if not the UK. Yet this barely touches the sides when it comes to the level of need in such an expensive, inner city borough with high levels of deprivation. The cost of buying up some of the few large-scale plots of land still available and ripe for redevelopment is astronomical.

‘Estate infill’ projects is one of the answers put forward. Just under 30 estates have been identified as suitable for new housing to be added into their footprint, in a policy that is proving to be the most controversial since the Southwark Estates Initiative of twenty years ago.

Building new social housing always has merit, and there are obviously compelling arguments for repurposing garages and other spaces to make room for new homes. There is also a clear balance between preserving greenery and ensuring more people have a safe home to call their own.

But many estates were designed specifically with their layout and proportions in mind, to ensure that there was a balance between much-needed housing, often high rise, and light and space.

Once this design is interfered with it can risk changing the entire character. Few people are against building new homes, but how many people would argue that estates across the borough have too much unused green space? Already high-density estates with tower blocks and homes without private gardens could be about to become far more crowded.

And just because an area is not ‘designated’ as a park, it doesn’t mean it isn’t seen or used as a park by the people who live next to it.

There was colour, there was pizazz, there was fizz, there were squeals of delight, there was dancing, and that was just the audience getting excited before the curtain went up. This was a Hairspray crowd and they were out out, writes Michael Holland.

I’ve known of this multi-awardwinning musical for years but never realised it had such a following. Many people came dressed up as Tracy (Lizzie Bea) and Edna Turnblad (Michael Ball), others in outfits from the early 60s, and I only discovered I had unknowingly come as Mr Turnblad when I was complimented on my ‘Wilbur’. Oops!

Like the audience, the show is hienergy from start to finish and tells of big girl Tracy Turnblad who wants to audition for a dance spot on The Corny Collins Show. Her mother Edna doesn’t want her daughter to fall victim to nasty body-shaming so refuses to let her go.

Cue the song, Mama, I’m a Big Girl Now. Just around the corner her best friend Penny has a similar argument with her mother who is more worried about the ‘race music’ played there.

Wilbur (Les Dennis), however, grants Tracy permission but when she gets there, Velma Von Tussle, the racist producer of the show, rejects her because of her size.

Back in school, Tracy gets detention for her big hairdo but gets to meet the black kids, - also in trouble - who show her some cool dance moves that she consequently uses to bypass Ms Von Tussle and go straight to Corny Collins.

Then there is a march organised to protest the colour segregation, which turns into a riot and they all end up in jail. I stepped outside at the interval to check that I was at the right theatre

So many issues were addressed and conquered here that it gave me back hope for a brighter future. Then I remembered that Hairspray is set in 1962 and 50 years on we are still fighting for equality and a nicer, fairer society.

A person who had wanted so much more for himself as a young man and was willing to follow his father’s advice and ‘try twice as hard’ to achieve his goals but who was denied the opportunities that the white privileged were handed on a plate without having to try.

There are times during the performance when Frank is talking about his strict Roman Catholic mother and he struggles to keep his emotions in check. The audience, knowing these are not acted emotions but the tears of a man hurting, feel his pain.

Hairspray is a great show and I now fully understand why it has won so many Tony and Olivier Awards.

And in case I forget, the songs by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are stupendous. They come thick and fast and in all shapes and sizes, just like the amazing cast.

Poetic Justice for sinner After a lifetime spent in and out of jail, Frank Skully turned elsewhere for help and Syner-gy Theatre Company became his saviour. His self-penned Every Sinner Has A Future is , he says, ’a one-man monologue asking the question, “Can you be born into crime?”… Is it nurture or nature? It charts my life from a baby to adult and the coincidences and traumas I faced that led me into crime and how coincidences and drama led me out of crime.’

Performed on a stark stage with just a few props and a video backdrop keeping us up with the passing years, Skully leads us through the events that he feels formed the man he became: being continually chased and beaten by the police; petty thieving, dealing with bul-lies and dodgydealing in the black market, and the inevitable spiralling down into ever

moment; the journey through the justice system on a Ghost Train in a tunnel with no light at the end; the bottomless helter-skelter of Hell.

Frank’s mum will believe it is a miracle that brought her boy to the stage, telling his - and her - story, and that the curse has been lifted. Frank knows it is because he tried twice as hard.

Frank Skully’s play is a stark reminder of the perpetual racism that people of colour com-bat every day of their lives from every corner of society; racism, which is now led from the Eton mess at the top so that those at the bottom have to negotiate the hand they are dealt with the best way they can.

Still 16, Capsey’s 59 from 41 balls led the visitors to 132-7 having been 29-3.

Fabulous powerplay bowling from Shabnim Ismail (0-15 from 20 balls) and Tash Farrant (2-22 from 20 balls) meant it was a total Spirit never challenged despite 40 from skipper Heather Knight, her opposite number Dane Van Niekerk taking three for 30.

A dramatic start saw Invincibles opener Georgia Adams inside edge Freya Davies’ second delivery onto the stumps.

Grace Gibbs was pinned lbw by Deepti Sharma and when Fran Wilson chipped one straight back to Charlotte Dean the visitors were wobbling at 29-3.

Capsey showed a maturity well beyond her tender years, launching a counter-attack with powerful blows especially through mid-wicket.

Paul Metcalfe thus joined Sale and they added 41 for the last wicket, easily the highest stand of the innings, before Khan bowled Sale for 51, made off 85

balls.

Bank were dismissed for 113 in the 47th over, leaving Metcalfe undefeated with 12. The last three wickets, which had more than doubled the score in the first match, had nearly trebled it in this one.

Peterson finished with the remarkable figures of 6-20 off his permitted 14 overs, while Khan had 2-15 off 6.2, Lodwick 1-38 off 11, and Gunning 1-15 off 4.

Warne’s reaction to his dismissal had resulted in the rare award of penalty runs to the fielding side, so Dulwich began their innings with five runs already on the board.

It started in similar fashion to their opponents as Metcalfe dismissed Ollie Steele and Veer Patel in his second and

third overs, both without scoring.

But there the similarity ended, as Chris Purshouse and Frankie Brown batted circumspectly at first, but gradually increased the tempo to add 56 for the third wicket in 21.4 overs.

Inevitably it was Sale who broke the stand, having Purshouse caught off the last ball of the 26th over for 45, off 74 balls, with the score on 67. Brown fell to Henry Goodwin in the next over, having faced 69 balls in scoring 17.

A spirited 16 off 24 balls by Sam Ellison lifted the scoring rate, but he and Matt Marfani both fell to Sale to make it 91-6 in the 34th over.

Heavy rain and thunder which began just as the earlier women’s match concluded, continued into the afternoon meaning any thoughts of a shortened game were abandoned at 4pm.

Dulwich put their visitors in under overcast skies, and reaped early rewards as Hugo Peterson took the first wicket in his second over and two more in his third, with all three batsmen dismissed without scoring.

Dulwich thus gained revenge for their defeat by these opponents in their first encounter, and return to the top of the table, though they remain just five points clear of Old Wimbledonians who also won on Saturday.

This weekend, Dulwich visit Worcester Park, who are currently in ninth place and will be desperate for a win to lift them out of the relegation zone.

Peckham biker starts Olympic bid

PECKHAM’S KYE Whyte was getting his Tokyo Olympics under way when the BMX racing started in the early hours of Thursday morning (UK time).

Whyte and 2017 junior world champion Beth Shriever are GB’s competitors.

Whyte earned European Championship silver in 2018 before claiming his first World Cup win in 2019.

He also has multiple British titles, and away from the sport his ambition is to open a bar in Manchester, where he lives.

“If BMX doesn’t work out then I don’t have anything to fall back on,” Whyte said in an interview looking ahead to the Games. “I want to be in the position where I’m doing great in BMX and I can also invest in my future with a business.”

Whyte overcame a damaged muscle in his kneecap as he was training a year out from the Olympics.

“I had been training that whole time and not known about my knee,” he said. “It got really bad and I had to have injections for it.

“It’s been quite hard to go back to training at the centre. I’m going back and doing physio whereas everyone else is doing full training. I’m just sitting there watching.

“But, everyone is in the mindset of wanting to get as strong as possible for [2021].

“For me, it’s about getting back to my strength levels before or getting even stronger and then perfecting my skills on the bike.

“Gym work often comes first and the cycling side comes after, but now I can work on elements such as my starts.”

Welterweight Burke, who is signed with Frank Warren, finished the contest with two hooks to the body.

Bexley’s Burke, 20, added to his winning run before British heavyweight Joe Joyce stopped Carlos Takam in the sixth round of their bout.

That victory – a thirteenth from thirteen fights with twelve KOs – means Joyce is now the WBO’s mandatory challenger to face the winner of September’s contest between Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk.

“I’m entertaining now, it’s a new me,” Burke said. “I’ve got a Millwall sponsor so if I get a few more Millwall bods down here - these crowds would be booming if my lot were in here.”

Also on the bill, another Lions supporter, Chris Bourke, moved to 10-0 as he defeated James Beech Jr

by unanimous decision in their WBC International super-bantamweight title fight.

Streatham’s Bourke, 26, always looked in control with a counterpunching approach as he landed accurately.

He was close to finishing the bout in the eighth and ninth rounds but had to be satisfied with scorecards of 9992, 99-91 and 100-90.

“I caught him with a few big shots and I thought he was ready to go,” Bourke said. “I don’t know if it was the seventh or eighth but I had him

Yee was making his Games debut and led in the final part, the 10km run, before Blummenfelt broke away in 27 degrees to break the tape eleven seconds ahead of the south Londoner.

“In training I went much harder than this race but unfortunately he was better on the day.”

There was a bizarre false start to the race as Yee and others were in the water only for a boat to block some of the athletes.

Yee follows the Brownlee brothers in making Olympic history, though only Jonny was racing as Alistair didn’t make the team after struggling with injury this year.

Yee is a strong runner, and represented Great Britain in the 10,000m at the 2018 European Championships before training with the Brownlees to gain triathlete expertise. Alistair won gold at both the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, with

younger brother Jonny taking bronze and then silver.

Yee beat both Brownlees to take gold at a World Cup event in Leeds earlier this year.

Brownlee, 31, is bringing his Olympic career to an end after Tokyo, and he was full of praise for his compatriot.

“It wasn’t a fairytale ending [for me] but we have got another chance in the mixed team relay,” he said.

“I have seen Alex come up through the ranks and he deserved that. He works ridiculously hard and I am pleased he is in our team on Saturday

“I thought in the next round he’d still be a bit rattled but he kept his shape and he sort of stayed composed. So it was a lot tougher than I thought it would be.

“I stuck to my boxing. Maybe looking back on it now I should have gone through the gears a little bit more. My corner wanted me to but I felt like I was in control the whole time.

Calm before the storm

Lions hope for more transfer movement – just not involving star man OPINION

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk AFTER A busy opening to the transfer window, things have quietened down for Millwall.

In one of the most efficient summers over the last few seasons, five players arrived before the Lions’ training camp in Scotland.

If new head of recruitment Harvey Bussell was hoping to make an instant impact he can certainly be happy with his work.

But now things are slightly out of Millwall’s control. They have to play a waiting game.

A combination of the top clubs having to tighten the purse strings and the European Championship delaying transfer business higher up has meant that Championship sides have to sit tight to see who becomes available from the Premier League.

While it’s been a good pre-season, it’s obvious Millwall need another attacker. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is available for transfer, while Tom Bradshaw’s goal returns over the past three seasons suggest if an acceptable offer comes in he could also be allowed to leave.

The Lions need to shift two or three off the wage bill to make room for more incomings. But with League One clubs also struggling financially without fans for a year and a half, potential destinations are few and far between right now.

Millwall fans are probably more pessimistic than most and who can blame them when you cast your mind back over the last few seasons. The last-minute goal conceded to Brighton to end hopes of an FA Cup semi-final place. Two play-off charges that ended with two games left when it seemed like the Lions could sneak into sixth.

In the summer of 2018, after a brilliant season when Neil Harris’ side finished eighth in their first campaign back in the Championship, there were rumours surrounding a number of Lions players.

Middlesbrough eventually put their money where their mouth was and signed George Saville on the last day of the

window. Millwall brought in Ryan Leonard but it was a huge blow, losing a player that had scored ten league goals the previous season.

That unsettling of the squad – Boro also bid for Jed Wallace – seemed to set the tone for the season. It was one long struggle with problems on the pitch and in the dressing room and survival was only secured with two games left.

The cloud hovering over the club this summer is the future of Wallace. Millwall have offered him a deal but it remains unsigned.

No one could begrudge Wallace waiting to see what his options are. He has a year left on his contract. It’s arguable no one has given more in a Millwall shirt since he first joined on loan in January 2016 and made his debut on a miserable, wet afternoon on a muddy pitch at Boundary Park in Oldham.

He has improved every season, and scored ten goals in each of the last two.

Wallace could command a fee in excess of £5million and it would be a surprise if Championship title contenders were not taking a look.

West Brom are under new boss Valerien Ismael who wants to introduce a highpressing, direct game. Wallace would fit right in. Or maybe a return to the south coast with Bournemouth under another new manager this season, Scott Parker.

The problem for Millwall if Wallace leaves is they would be very unlikely to be able reinvest all of the fee. Similar to when Leonard replaced Saville for a fraction of the money received.

It’s the main issue to be resolved this summer. Ideally it would be sorted before the start of the season, but that day is quickly closing in. Millwall would need to find a replacement or have one lined up. A repeat of the Saville situation when he had already started the season with the Lions only to leave is not the best scenario.

It’s been a positive transfer window so far and the squad has certainly been improved.

Millwall will hope things pick up and they can offload to strengthen further. But they will also hope that movement doesn’t involve Wallace.

side preparing for the start of the Premier League the weekend after the Championship kicks off.

Nicolas Pépé and Eddie Nketiah missed early attempts before Millwall threatened on the counter-attack against a side that dominated possession.

The visitors went close when Jake Cooper’s header from Scott Malone’s free-

kick hit the post and then Tom Bradshaw’s scuffed shot fell to Benik Afobe whose effort was saved by Arthur Okonkwo.

Mikel Arteta’s side took the lead when Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s stunning scissors-kick hit the crossbar and Callum Chambers nodded in the rebound.

And after several substitutions in the second half, Arsenal added further goals from Alexandre Lacazette, Pepe and Folarin Balogun.

Mitchell tapped home from close range after Murray Wallace had headed down Danny McNamara’s cross into the box.

Afterwards, Lions boss Gary Rowett revealed Mitchell’s form in pre-season was prompting a rethink about his immediate future.

“Young Alex Mitchell, he’s living the dream at the moment,” Rowett said.

“He’s had a really quick rise to first-team involvement.

“He comes in every day, he’s got a massive smile on his face, he just wants to go and play, he wants to test himself.

“And although the plan really for Alex Mitchell was to go out on loan again, at this moment in time I think he’s benefiting so much from being around the first team that he’s given me a little bit of food for thought as to whether I keep him with us for longer.

“He pops up with a goal at the end and as he’s running back to the halfway line he’s got the biggest smile. That shows you, he’s desperate to do well.

“Pre-season is all about giving players opportunities and minutes to show what they can do, building that fitness, building some player principles that are really

important.”

Thompson, 25, recently welcomed another addition to the family, a second son a month ago, a little brother for his and his partner’s 20-month-old first child.

Millwall returned to pre-season training in the last week of June coinciding with the latest arrival.

But you wouldn’t have guessed the midfielder has been seeing some early mornings as he has been one of the most impressive performers in the preparations for the 2021-22 season.

Thompson scored Millwall’s first goal in their first friendly, the 2-0 win against Motherwell, and has featured in every game.

He’s also not playing like his mind is away from Millwall, as he is again linked with a move to Portsmouth.

There have been some scorching hot days in London as the players sweat off any excess pounds they gained on holidays, though these days that’s not very many.

And there’s little respite for Thompson when he gets home from those gruelling sessions.

“The older one is out running around the garden,” Thompson said. “So there’s no more getting home from training and relaxing. It’s full-on.

“I was really looking forward to preseason, getting back and meeting all the lads. My focus was on putting the work in and building up my fitness for the season.

“It’s tough but I enjoy it. It’s important work so we’re fit and raring to go for the season.

“I think we’re in a good position. We’ve finished top-half the last two seasons and we’ve got a really strong squad.

“We’re looking to push up the table and try to challenge for the top-six places. We believe we’re capable of it.

“It’s a really tight-knit and determined group of players. We’ve shown that we’re capable of putting good runs together.”

Thompson scored the first goal of Gary Rowett’s reign – in a 2-0 win at home to Stoke in October 2019 – and has shown his knack of timing runs into the box and his finishing ability.

It’s frustrating that I got injured when I was playing well but I’ve felt good in pre-season and I can’t wait for the season to start.”

“Sav tries to wind up Pearcey,” Thompson said. “It’s funny to see those two together. Sav is great to have in the dressing room.

“With Pearcey, you’re never sure if he’s serious or not. One minute he can be really serious and the next he’s laughing.

“There’s a good spirit among the boys.”

Millwall’s first home game of the season is against Thompson’s former club Portsmouth, when fans return to The Den. Thompson added: “It’s going to be brilliant, the lads can’t wait for it. It’s been such a long time and we’ve missed them.

“Everyone knows what The Den is like on match-days, the atmosphere is unbelievable. That’s going to help us, they give us so much when we’re on the pitch and when we just need that little bit more to push us on.”

Uncertainty over selection as ‘pingdemic’ hits

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL FANS could get a good idea from Gary Rowett’s team at Ipswich this Saturday on the side he intends to send out on the first day of the season at QPR the following weekend.

However, there is an asterisk beside team selection as the Lions haven’t escaped the ‘pingdemic’ that has seen hundreds of thousands of people in the UK having to self-isolate over the last week and a half.

Rowett has mainly played 5-2-3 or 5-3-2 in pre-season. George Saville looks like a definite starter in one of those two attacking midfield positions in the latter formation.

George Evans played mostly in defence after moving from Derby last January but Rowett sees him as a midfielder.

Rowett has a wealth of options in that area, with Ryan Leonard having returned from injury as he aims for a first competitive appearance since February. He’s also an option on the right side of a back three, but on-loan Daniel Ballard is favourite to start there.

There is good competition all over the pitch. It’s Danny McNamara versus Mahlon Romeo at right wing-back and Scott Malone against Murray Wallace on the other side.

One man Rowett will find hard to leave out on the opening day is Matt Smith, who scored four goals in Millwall’s first three pre-season friendlies.

“Matt is doing what he always does,” Rowett said. “If you can get him good service in the box then he’s a real threat, which is exactly why we wanted him to stay this season. It’s exactly why we want to have that in our armoury.

“Matt’s looked in good condition coming back. He’s been really effective in the games as we expected him to be.”

Bart Bialkowski has also been unavailable for parts of pre-season, giving George Long the chance to stake his claim for the No.1 shirt.

Long is from Sheffield and so relatively far from his family. But he is relishing being in the capital and is no stranger to the area as he spent the 2017-18 season in another part of south London.

“I did a season on loan at Wimbledon and absolutely loved it, it was a fantastic

year for me,” Long said. “I loved living down south, my family enjoyed coming down at weekends watching games.

“You’ve got the city centre on your doorstep with the trains and what have you. It’s just an all-round great challenge and exciting times ahead for me.

“It’s a long way from home but it’s an exciting one to move down to, certainly.”

Millwall have an allocation of 981 for the game.

A draw with Gillingham on Tuesday evening was the first chance fans got to see their team in action ahead of the start of the Championship campaign on Saturday, August 7 at QPR. It was the first time that Millwall fans had been able to travel to an away game since the 3-0 success at Nottingham Forest in March 2020.

Gary Rowett will be very encouraged with most things he’s seen from his side during pre-season and it’s safe to say that the challenge they faced at the Priestfield was a robust one. Steve Evans’ team were a tough nut and with the backing of the home crowd to crack and they made life difficult for the Lions, particularly in the first half.

The Gills were on the front foot from the start. They looked in control and forced a number of early chances. However it was Ryan Leonard who came closest in the opening ten minutes, Scott Malone diverting a cross back his way but the former Sheffield United man failed to get himself into position for the strike.

Evans’ side were proving to be no pushovers and they took a deserved lead on fourteen minutes. Kyle Dempsey was

It was an old faithful that got Millwall out of trouble: a set-piece. Mahoney’s

corner, Smith’s header back across goal, and Jake Cooper nodded home to level, which the Lions’ second-half performance warranted.

Rowett concluded last season that his side needed to score more goals from set-pieces. They have now netted five in pre-season. Daniel Ballard, the big centrehalf, alongside the threatening duo of both Cooper and Shaun Hutchinson will worry most defences. Add to that the likes of Malone, George Saville and Jed Wallace who we all know can cause damage from such situations.

Millwall’s back three or five looks set to be the formation of choice one again for the forthcoming campaign. The Lions were solid in the second tier last season with one

of the best defensive records in the league.

It was their play in the final third that let them down as the play-off charge failed to materialise. The addition of Afobe up front will surely help with that - a proven goalscorer at this level and someone Rowett has worked with in the past.

But there were two major concerns the Lions boss will have taken away from Kent. One is that his side failed to make anything stick in attack during the opening 45 minutes. Afobe and Mason Bennett, the latter especially, found it hard to get into the game. Rowett still wants to sign another attacker and you can see why.

and link up well with his strike partner to get the Lions a route back into the game.

The other is that Rowett will be hoping during the season he is not without Cooper and Hutchinson at the same time. Those two have been a solid partnership since the Lions’ return to second-tier football in 2017. At times against Gillingham without them in the centre of it Millwall’s defence looked shaky.

Hutchinson was missing from the squad along with Jed Wallace and Maikel Kieftenbeld. The hope is that both Hutchinson and Cooper will be ready to start another season together with Arsenal loanee Ballard likely to be the third centreback in the first-choice team.

The attacking threat from Millwall’s wing-backs will also be key. Malone and Danny McNamara were bright and the battle for the right-wing back role will be another one to keep an eye on as the season progresses. Millwall’s attacking threat should be stronger, especially if they can add another forward.

The question is can they turn it into goals and challenge the top six?

Manager expects transfer market to pick up Gary Rowett has some big decisions ahead

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL BOSS Gary Rowett expects the market to get busier in the final month of the transfer window as the Lions aim to add more recruits before August 31.

Millwall made five signings early in the window but need to move players on to further bolster their options.

The main priority is another attacker.

But activity is down in the five major European leagues. From the Lions’ perspective, it means that if Premier League clubs aren’t making the signings they want then they won’t sanction loan moves for their players.

Millwall recruited Troy Parrott and Kenneth Zohore on loans from top-

flight Tottenham and West Brom last season.

The Lions have been linked with a move for Burnley midfielder Josh Benson, but so far the only player Sean Dykes has added to his outfield squad this summer is defender Nathan Collins from Stoke City.

Transfer budgets hit by the absence of fans in the leagues below Millwall also affect what Championship clubs can do.

Some of the players Millwall would like to offload would ordinarily be attractive options for League One clubs, but those clubs are struggling to come up with funds for fees and wages.

Rowett insisted he’s not “desperate” to get rid of anyone from his first-team

squad, but he knows room has to be made for more recruits.

“We would like to do more business, we have to be sensible but that’s a natural process” Rowett said after the 1-1 draw at Gillingham on Tuesday evening. “Not a lot has happened in the market so far, but I’m expecting it to pick up a little bit.

“I haven’t got anyone in the squad that I’m sat there thinking I’m absolutely desperate for that player not to be here. But of course players want to play football and if there are opportunities for some of those players to get regular football elsewhere we’ll have a look at that situation and then see if we can strengthen further.”

Rowett said: “Brilliant. Anyone that’s involved in football – whether it’s you guys [media], whether it’s us, players – it’s about the fans, playing in front of an atmosphere, that’s why you do it.

“Otherwise you turn up on a Sunday like everyone else and just play football for the love of it. So it was nice to feel that and to see it and hear people getting excited. I think that’s a massive tick for us.

“I really appreciate them coming down, the ones that travelled. I think there was a lot more of them in the stadium but they probably sat in a lot of the Gillingham seats!”

Pompey again linked with Lions raid Ben Thompson

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk PORTSMOUTH HAVE again been linked with a move for Ben Thompson – but a report claims wages are an issue for the League One club.

Pompey have already signed two ex-Millwall midfielders this summer – Shaun Williams and Ryan Tunnicliffe on free transfers – but would have to pay a fee for Thompson who has less than a year left on his contract.

The News in Portsmouth reported that Pompey are exploring the possibility of a deal, but that “the midfielder’s Championship wages are proving an insurmountable mountain to climb when it comes to the prospect of getting a deal over the line”.

Portsmouth boss Danny Cowley admitted this summer he admires Thompson, but didn’t go as far as to say the club would pursue a transfer.

Millwall are likely to have to move on players before further adding to their squad, with CEO Steve Kavanagh recently telling Southwark News that they had reached their transfer budget limit in this window.

Lions boss Gary Rowett currently has six central midfielders to choose from in his preferred 5-2-3 and 5-3-2 formations. Connor Mahoney has also been used in a three-man midfield in pre-season.

Rowett has not said Thompson is available, and the player has featured prominently as the Lions continue their preparations for the 2021-22 campaign.

The News in Portsmouth said Pompey’s top wage is £5,500 a week, which means they would struggle to match Thompson’s salary at his boyhood club.
