Some local residents have expressed concern that green areas around trees and on the edges of parks are being left to grow longer. But the council’s park management team said the new policy could lead to “an explosion of wildlife and nature”.

Will Walpole, Southwark’s parks manager, said: “People are emailing and asking why we’ve not cut the grass, some are not best pleased. However, I explain that leaving areas of grass to grow is proven to encourage wildflower growth, which brings more butterflies, bees and birds”.

Many local authorities in London and across the UK are mowing less like Southwark, to encourage wildlife to flourish in urban spaces. Several London councils, including Southwark, Wandsworth and Ealing, took part in a campaign called No Mow May this year, run by charity Plantlife. reforms to local government finance due in April 2021, the delay in central government’s social care white paper, and impact of emergency COVID-19 spending continue to leave Tooley Street with a widening deficit.

Education funding is a particular challenge, with the accumulated deficit on the Dedicated Schools Grant reaching £21 million by March 31 this year.

The council is adamant that despite the new policy, its parks are not “descending into chaos”. Officers say that they are maintaining a careful balance between encouraging wildlife and keeping the parks usable and convenient.

Cllr Catherine Rose, cabinet member for transport, parks and sport, said: “Most of us have early memories of local parks and a connection to how they have looked during our lifetime. We can also remember enjoying playgrounds, learning to ride a bike, walking the dog, family picnics and many more activities in these much-loved open spaces.

“Southwark has a proud heritage in park design, tree protection, horticulture and bio-diversity, extending across the past two centuries. Rewilding is an evolutionary part of the development of our parks for the 21st century. It responds to the real need to better protect and increase wildlife and nature. Done well and balanced with the many other roles our parks play, rewilding can be a visual and bio-diverse feast. We are custodians for generations to come.

Far from letting our parks go, we’re simply letting them grow.”

According to the council any ‘meaningful reduction’ without additional Department for Education is ‘remote’.

Current scenarios suggest an overall funding gap for 2022-23 reaching anywhere between £14 and £26.4 million.

The council’s finance team now has to find further cost saving measures to present to its cabinet in autumn.

Legion success at pub

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The launch party for a new branch of the Royal British Legion at a Bermondsey pub went off in style last weekend.

The party, which took place at the Ancient Foresters on Southwark Park Road, had food, drink and old war songs. Sandra Smith, who runs the pub, said: “ It was really good, we had a lot of phone calls the next day saying how nice it was. We had a compere, we had music on looking back to the war, there was dancing, and just a great atmosphere. I’ve had people asking me when we are doing it again.”

As well as similar events every few months at the pub, Sandra wants to do a charity haircut with all the proceeds to go to the British Legion. She also

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A woman is appealing for help after her pet cockatiel went missing from her Rotherhithe home last week.

Lu Spearman bought her “little best friend” Elvis around the start of the Covid-19 pandemic fifteen months ago. He has served as an indispensable companion through the year of isolation, she said - until he got “spooked” and flew out of an open window last Monday, July 12.

Cockatiels are small parrots and are often kept as pets. Elvis is grey and yellow with orange cheeks and is about 30cm in length head to tail.

Lu, who lives by the Albion Canal near Canada Water station, said: “Elvis goes away around lunchtime, he goes to his cage for food and a nap.

During nap time I open up all my windows and doors to air the flat out.

“But on Monday I suddenly heard him flap towards me, and the window was wide open. It spooked him.

I jumped up to close the window and me jumping up spooked him even more and he just flew out. It was horrendous.”

Elvis has since been seen as far away as Ladywell in Lewisham, but more recently is thought to have flown back to Jamaica Road in Bermondsey. Lu said she was certain from photos people have sent her that Elvis is the bird that has been spotted.

She is asking anyone who sees him to keep their eyes on him and call her as soon as they can, until she arrives to bring him home. If possible, people could try to approach him by walking towards him with a finger out - Lu has tamed him and he will hop on people’s hands. She said she is happy to pay people for their time if they can help bring him home.

She is also concerned that he may not be getting enough to eat and drink, especially in the recent sweltering weather. Elvis is usually fed seeds, nutrient pellets and fresh fruit and greens, she said.

Lu added that she would be grateful if anyone living in the Bermondsey or Rotherhithe area could put out some food, even just bread.

Lu, who lives alone, is convinced that Elvis did not flee her home, but flew out of the window because he was startled by her sudden movement.

“He loves me so much. He mostly sits on my shoulder. When I got him he wasn’t tame, he was my little project. He sings all day, and they don’t sing if they’re not happy.”

He loves the sound of phones ringing. His favourite programme is Who Wants To Be A Millionaire because of the ‘phone a friend’ section. He sings I’m A Little Teapot, he even wolf whistles all the time. He loves sitting on my shoulder when I’m cooking. He’s just so friendly and lovely and he loves exploring everything. I can’t really fathom life without him.

Lu was made redundant from her job in the events industry at the start of the pandemic and said she will do whatever it takes to get Elvis back.

“I know that he wants to be home with me, and I just want him back,” she said. “He’s such an important part of my life. I feel pretty lost, my soul is pretty empty without him. I’ve spent a week crying.”

Asked why she called him Elvis, Lu said: “I just think he’s got a huge personality, Elvis is obviously iconic, they have similar quiffs, he obviously sings. I just felt it summed him up.”

barber perplexed and shocked by attack on his new salon

The owner had to leave his daughter’s side in hospital exclusive

A man who opened a barber’s shop in the Surrey Quays shopping centre earlier this month was forced to leave his daughter’s side in hospital after learning that all the shop’s windows had been smashed.

Ibo, who was excited to launch Kingz Barberz by the Surrey Quays Tesco on July 8, said he was “upset” by the incident, which is going to cost him more than £6,000 to repair without insurance.

He had been waiting with his ten-yearold daughter in hospital on Friday night as she waited for surgery on her broken hand, when he got a call from the police telling him that he needed to come to the barber’s to secure the property.

“The police called me around 3.30-4am and told me I have to go to my place,” he said. “I said I could not, I am with my daughter, but they said I had to come and secure the place. All the windows have been broken - you have been attacked.

“The police stayed at the place until I got there, because it took some time to convince my daughter that I had to go. I got there and the windows were

smashed.”

Ibo then spent hours in the shop sweeping up the broken glass and boarding up the caved-in windows - and miraculously was able to open later that afternoon.

He said he thought someone was trying to send him a message with the

attack, because nothing was taken from inside the shop.

“Who it could be, I don’t know,” he said.

“Maybe people don’t want us to be here.

“It was so difficult to open a business anyway with Covid, and we want to make it a friendly, and a great environment for everyone.

“Some people are obviously just coming with a lot of hate, out of jealousy, out of what I don’t know. I think they tried to get us to close down, maybe have no trade for the school holiday [which starts this Friday July 23].

“It’s also the Eid celebration for the Muslim community this week. Muslims

normally try to get fresher for this day.

Anyway, someone is trying to slow us down, stop us earning. We will not let them win.”

Despite working hard to reopen on the same day as the attack, Ibo said he is still intimidated by what happened.

“I do feel upset now. There’s just an uncomfortable feeling you have after that.

“But we have done nothing to anyone.

We are friendly to everyone, and we’ve been welcomed by so many people.

The bill to repair the windows, which were custom-made, will come to nearly £6,300, Ibo said. He does not have the money to fix them at the moment, with the business only starting less than two weeks ago. He had not insured the shop before the attack, as he had not bought all of the items he wanted coverage for, so he will have to foot the bill.

“I really can’t pay for the new windows at the moment, I’m just trying to survive.

Even the cost of my staff is tough,” he said. Although he was not by her side, Ibo said he was relieved that the operation on his daughter’s hand went smoothly.

A Met Police spokesman said: “Police are investigating an allegation of criminal damage relating to a barbers in Surrey Quays Shopping Centre after a number of windows were smashed at approximately 02:45hrs on Saturday, 17 July. No arrests; enquiries continue.”

89-year-old robbed of her freedom by badge theft exclusive

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A woman in her late 80s had her disabled driving badge stolen last week in Walworth.

Kathleen O’Keeffe, 89, who lives with her daughter June in Chatham Street, was going out to do some shopping when they noticed June’s car window had been smashed. On closer inspection the only thing the thieves had taken was Kathleen’s blue badge.

Kathleen has painful legs and struggles to walk far, even using her walking frame. Without the blue badge that allows June to park in convenient disabled spaces, Kathleen struggles to go anywhere.

To make things worse, June said, the theft comes at a time when her mother was starting to go out to the shops and to restaurants for the first time in more than a year, after the

Covid-19 pandemic kept her largely housebound.

“Selfish isn’t the word, when that’s the only means that people can get about,” June said. “It’s not fair. My mum’s nearly 90. How could they do that to people?

“We’ve obviously been out a lot less since the incident, even with all this hot weather, because we can’t really drive anywhere.”

June said that her mother was “very upset” by the incident but added that “worse things happen at sea.”

A spokesperson for the Met Police said: “On Monday 19 July police received a report of a disabled drivers badge being stolen from a car outside an address in SE17.

“It is believed the car was broken into on Sunday 11 July or Monday 12 July.

“Enquiries were carried out, but ultimately there were no viable lines of investigation for officers to pursue – ie. no suspect, witnesses or CCTV – and as such the matter has been closed.

“Should any further information come to light it will of course be investigated.”

About 2,400 people were given blue badges in Southwark across 2019/2020. Aside from allowing people to park in disabled spaces, the badges mean you are entitled to a full discount on the congestion charge for driving in central London, and the ultra low emission zone charge up to 2025.

This would save the person who had the badge thousands of pounds a year.

Thefts of blue badges have been on the rise in recent years. A spokesperson for the Local Government Association, which represents councils, said in a 2018 statement: “Illegally using a Blue Badge is not a victimless crime.

For disabled people, blue badges are a vital lifeline that helps them get out and about to visit shops or family and friends. Callous thieves and unscrupulous fraudsters using them illegally are robbing disabled people of this independence.”

Lambeth and Southwark drivers among worst for blue badge offences

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk People in Southwark and Lambeth were among the worst boroughs in London for blue badge offences last year, according to new research.

Lambeth was second in London with 2,963 parking fines for misusing blue badges in 2020. Southwark came in ninth with 2,133. The borough with the most fines was Barking and Dagenham with 3,714.

As well as inconveniencing people who genuinely need the parking space, fines for parking in disabled bays can be up to £1,000. People who have a badge are not allowed to lend it to others, including friends or family, or they could face a hefty fine themselves.

The research was done by price comparison website Uswitch, who issued freedom of information requests to local authorities across the UK. Joel Kempson, a car insurance expert for the company, said: “The Blue Badge scheme was introduced by the Government to help those with mobility issues park close to where they need to go.

“This includes allowing drivers to park on yellow lines for up to three hours, on the street for free where there are parking metres or in designated disabled spaces.

“Drivers who abuse the Blue Badge policy could face a fine of up to £1,000.

Yet despite the risk of hefty penalties, it’s clear the law is disregarded by many motorists risking large fines to park for free or closer to their destination.”

Police appeal: Moped rider killed after ‘crashing into tree’

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A three-year-old girl has been left with ‘life-changing’ injuries after being ‘hit by an e-scooter’ in Camberwell - in the second serious collision reported in under two weeks.

The child was rushed to hospital by her family after the collision took place at around 8.30pm on Monday night, July 19, in Myatt’s Fields Park. The Met brought in to investigate after her condition quickly deteriorated.

Although she is now said to be stable, her injuries are believed to be serious enough to be life-changing.

Officers are now urging the rider, who had stopped at the scene to apologise, to come forward. They are also urging any witnesses to get in touch.

He is described as a young male who was with a group of people including another e-scooter rider and someone on a bicycle.

Detective Inspector Lucie Card, of the Met’s Roads and Transport Policing Command, said: “A little girl has been left in a serious condition after this collision and her family are, of course, very distressed.

“We have reason to believe that the e-scooter’s rider stopped after the collision and apologised to the little girl’s mother.

“It may be that they haven’t realised the severity of the girl’s injuries and thought she was ok.

“I am asking this person to please come forward and speak to us because we do need to understand what happened.

“I know it might feel a little overwhelming, but please do the right thing and call us or go to your nearest police station.

“We are also keen to hear from anyone in Myatt’s Fields Park around 8.30pm on Monday night.

“Please do get in touch with us if you witnessed what happened, or have information about the circumstances.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Work has begun on the £5m restoration of a nineteenth-century church near Waterloo.

St John’s Waterloo, on Waterloo Road near the station, is now closed until spring next year after work began on July 5.

The project will restore the central nave as a place of worship and a concert and events space. The semi-derelict crypt will be transformed into a place for community, arts, wellbeing, employment, and youth initiatives. Other parts of the project include better toilets and meeting rooms.

Raising most of the £5m needed to restore the church took ten years, according to the vicar - and work was then delayed another year by the Covid-19 pandemic. The church is still £150,000 short of the total and continues to ask for donations to cover its costs.

TODDLER ‘HIT BY an E-SCOOTER’ left with ‘LIFE CHANGING INJURIES’ The three-year-old is the second person in two weeks to be injured on local streets by the scooters pavement - before suffering an epileptic seizure.

Earlier this month TfL announced it was expanding its e-scooter trial into Southwark. Although TfL scooters will not be available to rent within the borough, those picked up from the City can now be ridden through the area on roads, cycle lanes and cycle paths but not on pavements. There are now 1,600 e-scooters available to rent across London.

The new designs were made by Eric Parry Architects, who said they were looking to create a sense of “the open door”. Eric Parry added: “The project is wonderful because of the simultaneity and diversity of people involved and because these spaces are able to deliver a sense of tranquillity and introspection in a world that is so manic and so stressed, their value is enormous and this is why this project is so important.”

The church’s congregation will worship at St Andrew’s Short Street. Canon Giles added: “St John’s may be closing until next spring but we’re still here for you.

Everyone is welcome to drop in and see us at St Andrew’s (just off The Cut) and our beautiful churchyard garden at St John’s will continue to be open for everyone to enjoy.”

How many people are adhering to these rules is, of course, another matter.

Concerns have ranged from the number of e-scooters in traffic, including without lights and with riders not wearing helmets, as well as the mode of transport being linked to crime including street muggings and pavement collisions.

Pierre Garcia-Benitez had no option but to admit his guilt after he was identified from CCTV as the culprit behind the cowardly attack on the pensioner.

In a premeditated crime, on Monday, April 26, Garcia-Benitez had followed his 78-year-old victim as she left the post office and the cash machine where she had withdrawn £200.

As she walked along Norwood Road, he grabbed her handbag - causing her to fall over as she tried to hold onto it before running off.

Passersby intervened, including one man who saw the attack from his vehicle and chased the suspect.

He died at the scene and, although he has not been named, his next of kin have been informed.

Garcia-Benitez escaped that day but was arrested on Saturday, June 19, after a media appeal featured in the News, a trawl of CCTV footage and door-to-door enquiries.

He was charged with one count of robbery and pleaded guilty at Inner London Crown Court on Monday, July 19. He will be sentenced in September.

Police Constable Alex Earley, investigating officer, said: "The victim in this case was fortunately not seriously injured, but was left upset and shaken.

“It is incomprehensible to me that someone could commit this crime against such a vulnerable and defenceless victim, leaving her to lie in the street. My team and I gathered a significant amount of evidence - so much so that Garcia-Benitez had no choice but to plead guilty. I hope this brings the victim a sense of justice and closure so she can start to move past what happened.”

outrage as council pushes ahead with estate infilling

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Distraught residents have challenged Southwark Council to scrap its ‘infill’ housing policy and start again, telling last week’s full assembly meeting that their ‘traumatised’ communities have been ‘ignored for two years’.

At the meeting, the Labour-run administration also rejected a call from the Liberal Democrats to put the scheme on hold and explore giving formal protections to communal land in estates across Southwark.

Twenty-eight estates in total are earmarked for so-called ‘infill’ homes - new council homes squeezed into communal areas the council claims are either unused or unloved, or can be reconfigured to hold new properties and create improved playgrounds and amenities.

Save Bells Gardens campaigner Amanda was one of three residents representing the estate, formally to petition the council at the meeting on July 14.

The estate is due to have 97 new housing units built on its land, of which around a third, 32 in total, will be for private sale and 62 for social rent.

She told councillors: “We as a community understand the need for new council homes and support the development for 44 new homes across the road.

“But we also understand the need to maintain a certain level of access to communal green spaces for the health and wellbeing of existing residents.

“Bells Garden not only offers a substantial green space the size of Brunswick Park in Camberwell, but a multi-use games area and a large play space for toddlers and young children.

“It is a community park in all but name. The council needs to recognise that while regeneration can improve the local area, residents in our community are most likely to be excluded from what’s on offer.

“We need to maintain our communal areas for the sake of community

She continued: “The council needs to stop using the demands for council housing as a reason to justify the development.

“We as a community are all too aware.

We have the families on our estates living in extremely overcrowded situations that have been on the waiting list for years.

“Building more one/two bed apartments is not going to solve that problem.”

She accused the council of ignoring residents’ views for two years and “misrepresenting data, using misleading language and technical jargon” in 149 planning documents residents struggle to understand, especially those for whom English is a second language.

“At no point has the engagement

process felt sincere or meaningful,” she claimed.

“Our community has spent two years having our voices ignored during the consultation process, only to have to come here as a last ditch effort for you to hear and acknowledge what hundreds of residents are trying to say.

“This speaks volumes about the proces, but it doesn’t recognise the traumatic experience this is for our community or for those involved that are trying to get you to take notice of us.”

She asked the council to ‘reset and engage’, with council homes cabinet member Stephanie Cryan promising there would be further door-knocking on the estate so everyone can input into the plans that could be ‘tweaked’ to take on feedback.

But as with other infill schemes it would appear the opportunity to say ‘no’ simply isn’t there.

“We do have 15,000 on our waiting list and 32 on Bells Gardens are desperately waiting for a home,” Cllr Cryan added, highlighting that there would be a new park, play space and community centre

and an increase in green space after the redevelopment.

“We have to balance both needs up,” she said, referring to housing shortages and greenery.

“I think Bells sort of strikes that balance but we will see if we can tweak it anyway.

“My commitment to you is that we will do that additional consultation, take the learnings from that, and see if we can change the proposals based on that.”

Dodson and Amigo estate campaigners also submitted a deputation. Jacquie Gilmartin asked the council about the way Little Dodson had been consulted on the redevelopment. There are eight properties, one void, one leaseholder, and six residents. None want to lose the green space or move, she explained, saying that the twelve garages proposed to be redeveloped include disabled residents.

“Nobody knew about it. I’ve been on the estate for 52 years until my neighbours knocked on the door and said Jacquie, please help us’ and I said ‘what’s wrong’ and they said ‘they’re

pulling us down’.

“Not one person consulted them but what was promised was that all of them could move back.”

She questioned how a ‘right to return’ could be enforced when seven people on Little Dodson who did want to move back outnumbering the two properties being built, claiming they had been ‘lied to’.

Cllr Cryan said the right of return was across the whole estate and a consultation was in ‘really early stages’ with a residents’ project group to be set up soon.

“We are not pulling the estate down,” the housing chief added. “These are bedsits which are not a very good standard.

“They are not at a standard of quality that our residents deserve to live in.”

When asked how she felt about campaigners being labelled 'nimbys' during the furore over ex-housing boss Leo Pollak’s twitter controversy, Jacquie described the accusation as ‘derogatory and offensive’.

“We are not against council housing, what we are against is people coming in ripping the heart, taking our green spaces, taking our children’s play area, building on top of roofs.

“Buy back the land you sold off cheaply, go and do a stock search survey.

“I’ve got a resident in my flats who has been begging the council for three years to downsize her to a smaller flat. The properties are there, you just can’t be bothered to look.”

Liberal Democrat housing spokesperson Anood Al-Samerai called for a ‘constructive debate’ and tabled a motion calling on the council to prioritise bringing vacant homes into use, audit all green space in the borough, take steps to protect them for residents and urgently review the site-selection criteria for council-led developments.

The motion was defeated by Labour.

During the debate she told councillors: “Estates are designed specifically with communal green spaces because people don’t have gardens.

“I can’t believe we can’t agree that there should be formal protections for green space and play spaces.”

Plans for new office block in Elephant Locals argue more homes are needed as more people shun office blocks

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Nearly 400 objections have been received against Lendlease’s latest plans for an eighteen-storey office block in Elephant and Castle.

The Elephant Park developer says the application for the site known as ‘Plot H1’ will include a retail offering on its ground floor as well as community space.

Lendlease was granted Outline Planning Permission for the scheme as part of the £2.5 billion regeneration in the works since 2010, with details to be firmed up through subsequent proposals.

There will be no housing whatsoever on the site, with the developer saying the increased office space is responding to changes in the wider area. Objectors,

however, have questioned the need for more central London office space given the impact of the pandemic and shift to working from home.

In a press release about the plan, Lendlease said the building would “aim to set new standards for workspace in the post pandemic world” and will include a “a publicly accessible lobby space for the local community, workers and visitors to meet, chat, relax and socialise”.

If approved, the developer says the building would provide “around ten per cent of Southwark’s projected requirement for new employment floorspace over the next fifteen years”.

Although Lendlease says it has fulfilled the housing obligations agreed with the council in the first stage of the masterplan, overall the scheme only includes 25 per cent affordable homes.

Jerry Flynn, from the 35% campaign which lobbies for affordable and social housing, told this newspaper: “Southwark has already caved-in twice to Lendlease – it only got 25 per cent affordable housing, instead of 35 per cent, and only a hundred of these homes will be social rented, out of nearly 3,000 in total.

“Social rented housing is needed more urgently than ever and it would be incredible if Southwark approved a scheme without a single housing unit.

“Southwark must reject this application and tell Lendlease to build the lost ten per cent affordable housing, housing that should have been provided all along.”

Formally objecting to the application via the council’s online planning register, one resident said they were “pleasantly surprised” by Lendlease so far but felt the office block would ruin the park and area.

“The style and height of the developments all work well with each other, the park is brilliant, especially hearing the kids laughter at the fountain, and seeing the park in constant use.

“This new office development is nothing like what has been proposed.

“Do we need an office building in the area, when many people are working from home...We need more apartments for locals. There is an abundance of empty offices, fifteen minutes walk from here in London Bridge. It will be empty in the evenings and on weekends. It will block sunlight onto the park.”

Sadikee Williams, from Robsart Street, Stockwell, was charged on Wednesday July 14.

Sixteen-year-old Keane was found fatally stabbed in Oval Place shortly before midnight on July 5.

Williams has also been charged with possession of an offensive weapon in a public place.

He appeared at Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court the same day he was charged.

The Endz was written by Harris Academy pupils set to a score from the Multi Storey Orchestra.

A mix of rap, spoken word, songs, the show tells the story of how gang violence and knife crime tears apart two friends, in its young performers’ own words.

Originally due to premier in March 2020, the project is now having its longdelayed first showing at Bold Tendencies in Peckham on Friday, July 23.

Around 30 young people took part in the project, many of whom were friends with murdered teenager Malcolm MideMadariola.

Malcolm, from Peckham, died after being stabbed three times with a ‘Zombiestyle hunting knife’ outside Clapham South tube station in November 2018.

The top academic student, described as a ‘role model to all’ by his former teachers, was viciously attacked while trying to intervene when a group started a fight with his friend.

His killer, Tammuz Brown, from Abbey Wood, was sentenced to sixteen years in jail for the senseless attack.

In the days after Malcolm’s death, executive principal Rebecca Hickey told the News: “He had a dedicated work ethic, was a deep and creative thinker and balanced a calm, mature manner with a wonderful sense of humour and an infectious smile. Malcolm was admired by all in our school community: teachers loved working with him; younger students looked up to him and his peers recognised him as a very special individual.

“To lose such a precious, innocent life at so young an age is beyond tragic.

Malcolm will be remembered always as a great ambassador of Harris Academy Peckham.”

bereaved father, Olumide, raises funds to work with young people to divert them away from crime and make good choices, and has also helped coordinate fundraising in memory of Thames rescue hero Folajimi Olubunmi, Malcolm’s cousin.

36-year-old charged with teen killing

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk A man has been sentenced for the manslaughter, by diminished responsibility, of Barrington Davis in Lewisham.

Daniel Burrell, of no fixed address, appeared at the Old Bailey on Wednesday, July 14, where the judge ordered him to be indefinitely detained in a secure psychiatric hospital.

He had been convicted at the same court the previous day by the jury's unanimous vote.

Barrington’s body was found after police were called over reports about a smell coming from his flat in Lewisham’s Torridon Road.

After forcing entry on May 16, 2019, police found the 54-year-old’s body.

He had been dead for some time after suffering multiple stab wounds.

Burrell, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, was arrested on November 4, 2019. He denied killing his neighbour but refused to give evidence in court.

Detective Inspector Jo Sidaway of the Met’s Specialist Crime Command said: “Our thoughts today are with the family of Barrington Davis.

“We may never know the circumstances surrounding his death and it saddens me to leave his loved ones with so many questions unanswered.

“I hope that they find a measure of

closure now that legal proceedings are at an end.

“I agree with the verdict and the sentence handed down and am relieved that Daniel Burrell will now receive the medical help that he needs in an environment where he is not a danger to others.”

A spokesperson for Barrington’s family said: "Barrington was an intelligent, welldressed, music-loving, funny and caring father, brother and uncle, who we will all miss dearly.

"The verdict of manslaughter has brought some form of closure to our family and although this won’t bring Barrington back, we feel as though justice has prevailed. There will always be a void left in our hearts.”

Bereaved son’s three year wait for answers after mentally ill mother’s death exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The bereaved son of a mentally ill woman found dead in an unheated flat in 2017 has criticised the care she received from the South London and Maudsley NHS Trust in the weeks before her death.

Thirty-eight-year-old Aminata Taal was found dead by police in her supported living home, lying on a bare mattress on December 6, 2017, several days after she was reported missing by her care coordinator. The flat was unheated and had no food inside.

More than three years later, an inquest into her death concluded early this month, with Coroner Dr Julian Morris recording that the cause was 'unascertainable'; returning an open conclusion. It has been an agonising wait for her loved ones.

Ms Taal had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and had a history of mental health problems. At the time of her death she had been under the care of the mental health trust’s community team.

At the inquest, it was said she had shown signs of not engaging with support

The Maudsley Hospital, in Denmark Hill services since around October that year.

By December, her symptoms were worsening and had been picked up on by social workers.

'Well-known' signs of her relapses included dressing in all-white clothes, only drinking milk, and refusing to engage with care staff.

Two days after a consultant psychiatrist attempted to visit her at home on December 4, 2017, police forced entry and found her body.

Although the trust denies failings in

its care - and its care was not explicitly criticised by the Coroner - her family believe more should and could have been done to prevent her death.

The trust has, however, admitted its record keeping fell short of expected standards.

Ms Taal’s son, who requested not to be named in this article, said: “Listening to the evidence over the last few days has been painful and aggravating.

“The reason I say this is that, in all honesty, the role of some more than

others has been frankly embarrassing and inadequate to say the least.

“Basic and simple things that could have been sorted out easily have taken longer than they needed to.

“I feel there was no collective effort as there should have been in situations like this, where someone’s life was at stake.

“Ultimately not one of the organisations took responsibility in any way shape or form for their mistakes in this process.

“I feel like the structure and partnerships dealing with mentally unwell people need to change to accommodate the fact that people have families, and the aftermath of sudden deaths can traumatically affect those families.

“I was fifteen-years-old at the time this happened and felt that all of the responsibility fell on to my shoulders when it clearly shouldn’t have.

“It is shameful that the organisations involved allowed me, a child, to feel this guilt and blame, when others had obligations to care, support, and look out for my mother. I cannot change the past but hopefully the present and future care can change for the better as I don’t want anyone else to experience this sad reality.

“I would like to thank the Coroner for

the interest, care, and concern he has shown and the fairness with which he has dealt with the case.”

His lawyers have called on the trust to make public any findings from internal investigations into the case.

Vanessa Smith, chief nurse at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust said: “On behalf of the trust, I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Ms Aminata Taal.

“Following Ms Taal’s death in 2017, an internal investigation was conducted by the trust. We recognise the standards of record-keeping were not of the quality we would expect and we have made a number of improvements over the last four years. We have worked closely with Her Majesty’s Coroner to provide evidence to support the findings, which did not criticise the quality of care provided. nAs requested by the court we will be providing details of our updated operational policies to the Coroner to address any concerns raised.

“We want to reassure Ms Taal’s family and friends as well as those using our services that our trust continues to work very hard to improve the quality of care we provide.”

Renowned DJ and promoter Steve Laviniere is one half of the famous Bobby & Steve duo, best known for their KISS FM slot Garage City and label and club event Groove Odyssey.

In early March 2020 he contracted COVID-19 and initially tried to manage his symptoms at home.

By the end of the month he was quickly deteriorating and having trouble breathing, and walked into A&E after his wife, Julie, drove him to hospital.

He was quickly admitted to intensive care, put into an induced coma and spent nearly a month on a ventilator. At one point he was so unwell his organs began shutting down and he needed CPR. Despite showing signs of improvement, doctors discovered that the illness had spread to his nervous system and caused a rare brain injury called Acute hemorrhagic leukoencephalitis (AHLE/ Hurst Disease).

The impact has been devastating, leaving him unable to communicate or move his body over a year later.

Doctors have told his partner that they do not know if he will ever recover.

Currently, he is living in a specialist neurological nursing home and is tube fed.

Now the industry is rallying around the DJ and hoping that ‘‘Dance for Steve’ will help raise funds for his future care and home adaptations, estimated to cost at least £80,000.

Councils call for masks to be worn - despite the relaxation in rules post Freedom Day

On Monday, July 19, the vast majority of restrictions imposed during the pandemic were lifted.

In response, a patchwork of rules on face coverings has emerged, with Boris Johnson’s central government merely recommending they are worn as a matter of personal responsibility, while TfL and other transport organisations have said they will remain mandatory.

Borough Market has also said its traders and customers will continue to wear face masks under rules enforced through its unique by-laws.

According to the research, produced by Landman Economics and published this week, 165,000 children with key worker parents are living below the breadline, rising to more than a million across the UK. Researchers found London has the second highest rate of child poverty in key worker households (27 per cent) just behind the North East (29 per cent) compared with a UK average of 21 per cent.

All figures are based on household income after costs.

The research uses the government definition of a key worker, encompassing health and social care, public sector, food and other essential workers such as delivery drivers.

Many industries are dominated by low pay and insecure hours, with Universal Credit failing to meet their needs.

TUC Regional Secretary Sam Gurney said: “All our key workers in London deserve a decent standard of living for their family.

“But too often their hard work is not paying off like it should. And they struggle to keep up with the basic costs of family life.

“The prime minister has promised to ‘build back fairer’. He should start with our key workers.

“They put themselves in harm’s way to keep the country going through the pandemic. Now, we must be there for them too.

“This isn’t just about doing right thing by key workers. If we put more money in the pockets of working families, their spending will help our businesses and high streets recover in London. It’s the fuel in the tank that our economy needs.”

The TUC is lobbying for a rise in the national minimum wage to £10 per hour, ending the public sector pay freeze, keeping the £20 uplift in Universal Credit beyond this autumn when it is due to be scrapped and ensuring all outsourced public sector workers are paid at least the real Living Wage.

Borough Market makes face masks mandatory through ancient by-law

According to the market’s leaders, a survey of customers this month showed a ‘clear majority’ in favour of the added protection against the virus.

Face coverings will continue to be worn by both visitors and traders.

In January 2021 the market became the UK’s first outdoor retail venue to make mask wearing compulsory, making use of the market’s unique by-

laws.

Darren Henaghan, Managing Director of Borough Market, said: “It was important for us to understand how our customers felt, and the clear message we received was that they want masks to stay for the time being. We have a responsibility to provide a safe and comfortable environment where the public can shop with confidence, so this is the right thing to do. Our traders, who will also continue to wear masks, support this move as well.”

Visitors are able to remove face masks while eating and drinking in the market’s hot food areas.

Guy’s runs the first cell therapy trial for post Covid lung scarring

A Guy’s Hospital nurse and the man she treated for Covid last year have been reunited after he joined a trial that could reverse the longlasting damage the virus caused to his lungs.

Head’s laptop success The headteacher of a Bermondsey school was honoured by the Lord Mayor of London this week for the school’s efforts during the Covid crisis.

Marcus Huntley, principal of Compass School on Drummond Road, was given the Lord Mayor’s Covid award at a special ceremony on Mansion House in the City on Monday afternoon, July 19.

The award was recognition of the school raising £40,000 to provide children with laptops after learning went online in the first lockdown.

Money also went on book packs, internet access and wellbeing activities for students.

Mr Huntley said: “I was initially unsure of the idea of running a campaign. With temporary mortuaries being built, asking for money for laptops seemed crass.

But I could see the longer-term damage to pupils if they were out of education for a long time. Something had to be done and this was the best

decision I made.

“Collecting this award is a great honour in what has been a challenging eighteen months, and I am proud of how all my colleagues at Compass rose to the challenge posed by the pandemic, organising the setup and distribution of the laptops, carrying out home visits, food drops, and setting up fun online community activities such as a weekly Kahoot quiz alongside our virtual learning.”

Parents of children at the school were delighted with the fundraising efforts. “This is such a good thing,” said Marsha Phillips-King, whose daughter was in Year Eight at the time.

“She has aspirations to be a vet in the future and we’ve both been worried about her falling behind.

This means she can now keep on top of her work and not get stressed.”

Compass held a virtual prize day last week after three year groups or about 100 children - had to selfisolate following some positive Covid tests at the school, Mr Huntley said.

Mike Salmon spent three months as a patient at Guy’s and St Thomas’s after catching Covid-19 in late March 2020. Five weeks of those were spent on a ventilator. Vascular research nurse Lily Benton treated him when she moved to intensive care (ICU) as huge numbers of hospital patients built up.

Speaking of his memory of being ill in hospital and then meeting Lily, Mike said: “I don’t remember anything after I had been told I had Covid-19.

It was a couple of days before I was put on a ventilator from what I’ve been told afterwards. I was clearly very seriously ill. After five weeks in ICU I spent another seven weeks in hospital and I am extremely grateful to everyone at Guy’s and St Thomas’ for their excellent care and support.

“There must have been scores of people who looked after me in ICU, but to meet Lily, who had been able to tell me about what happened to me during those first few weeks in ICU has been brilliant.”

Looking back at how they first met Lily said: “I first cared for Mike shortly after being re-deployed to one of the ICUs, and he was extremely poorly. In the first few weeks of the pandemic many of us had a fear of the unknown – a lot of our patients were very ill, and we were dealing with a disease that particularly at first we didn’t know a lot about. It was pretty tough but our teams dealt with it so well.

“In those early weeks seeing Mike make progress was a seminal moment

for me. Seeing him begin to get better after a few very tough weeks gave me the strength to carry on.”

Mike was among the estimated two percent of people who are left with fibrotic lung scarring after having coronavirus. This can make it hard for him to breathe.

Guy’s Hospital is running the world’s first human cell therapy trial, called MONACO, in an effort to reverse the scarring. Mike is among the first five patients to take part in the trial.

He added: “Taking part in this study, while it may or may not help in improving my breathing, is my way of helping and thanking the teams at Guy’s and St Thomas’ who saved my life, so that they can develop new treatment for patients just like me.”

Lily has returned to her normal job as a research nurse. She and Mike met again when he was referred to participate in the MONACO trial.

“Spotting Mike’s name on the screening log for the MONACO study was really special - seeing a patient that I looked after in ICU, out of ICU, and living their life has been amazing,”

she said. “And it’s a real privilege to look after Mike on the MONACO trial where we hope that the cell treatment will help reverse some of the lung scarring that he sustained as a result of Covid-19.”

The MONACO study is the world’s first Phase 1 trial that has got to the stage where it has been given to patients. People are given speciallyengineered white blood cells that researchers hope will eat excess scar tissue in the lungs of Covid-19 survivors. The study is being led by surgeon Ashish Patel.

Mr Patel said: “Successful delivery of this experimental cell therapy into patients marks an important milestone in establishing its safety, before it is considered for treating larger numbers of patients who are affected by post Covid-19 fibrotic lung disease.

“I would like to extend my gratitude to the five incredible patients who have come through their severe Covid-19 illness and been so willing to participate in this first in human study.

We could not have done this without their support.”

Free events this summer at elephant and castle Throughout July and August there will be live music, entertainment, kids workshops and sports classes.

Along with the free Elephant Trail already on display, there will also be weekly summer workshops for kids featuring performing arts, circus and theatre skills including learning how to be a clown.

free G&Ts at south bank huge ice cube Londoners will be able to cool off in style at the South Bank this Thursday, with hundreds of chilled cans of gin and tonic being given out by the river.

Gin company Greenall’s is installing a silver cube by the river near Oxo Tower Wharf, containing 1,000 cans of gin and tonic, which a barman will give out to punters between 12pm and 4pm.

The cans will be served at 5C, which Greenall’s says is the perfect temperature for a gin and tonic.

“Despite the uncertainty of the British weather, one thing is for sure, no-one enjoys sipping on a lukewarm drink,” said Greenall’s marketing manager Stacey Kong. “We're therefore proud to be just the tonic for Brits this summer with the launch of the 'Greenall's ice cube' and can't wait to serve our award-winning gin to the capital later this month.”

the grand opening of new community centre in Rotherhithe

A Rotherhithe charity is holding a grand opening for its new community centre this week.

The Restorative Justice for All (RJ4ALL) centre will hold a weekly food bank, workshops, coaching and counselling classes and fitness sessions for locals.

Local MP for Bermondsey and Old Southwark Neil Coyle will come to the opening of the centre on Plough Way on Saturday.

Mr Coyle said: "I am delighted that RJ4All are opening a community centre in my constituency and I look forward to seeing the various projects and services this hub will provide to support our local community."

The ceremony will also include free food and drink, free dance classes, a raffle, an art installation for children and work by an award-winning London artist, Angel Correa.

Theo Gavrielides, founder and director of RJ4ALL, said: “Since COVID-19 struck, the art of community cohesion has been greatly damaged all around the world.

This centre represents a stride in the right direction towards a more united and strengthened neighbourhood [in] South East London.”

Nick Johnson, a charity board member added , said: “The opening of the Community Centre marks the beginning of a new chapter for RJ4All and its assistance with the local neighbourhood and beyond.”

The counselling work is being done by staff from the University of East London.

Psychotherapist Max Eames and psychologist Andrea Giraldez-Hayes from the University of East London, said: “We are proud to be partnering with RJ4All, given its mission to enhance community cohesion and champion human rights.

Southwark free summer activity programme will start next monday Southwark school children may be eligible for a free programme of fun summer activities.

The holiday activities and fun (HAF) programme, which is being run nationwide by the government, is aimed at children who are eligible for free school meals. Events in Southwark run from next Monday July 26-August 23.

Cllr Evelyn Akoto, Southwark Council’s cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “The holiday clubs can involve helping young people learn new things and take part in enriching activities from sport to music, dance, drama, art, cooking and gardening, as well as improving

socialisation, helping young people to have fun with friends this summer, in a safe environment.”

The Government has invested £220m in the nationwide HAF programme. This initiative is running alongside the £200m in funding announced earlier this year for summer schools for children whose learning has been most disrupted by the pandemic.

HAF ran in a smaller version over the Easter holidays, and the council also plans to repeat the programme over the Christmas break.

Andrew Forsey, chair of the HAF Alliance, said: “The importance of an enriching holiday experience for all children cannot be underestimated.

There is evidence that the best HAF programmes benefit children, parents and communities by enabling children to learn new skills, socialise with friends, and enjoy nutritious food in a safe environment, while supporting their return to school and alleviating parental stress.

“The HAF Alliance is sharing its expertise and best practice with local authorities to help them to develop and deliver excellent holiday programmes for their local communities.”

The virus is still with us and the government must play by the rules

I

t was fantastic to see the whole country coming together to support the England team during the Euros, except for the random Tory MP who refused to watch at all! The final was devastating but Southgate and the team have so much to be proud of and provided joy and hope to us all after such a difficult period living through COVID-19.

The government’s attempt to “stoke the fire” of division, as one England player put it, backfired spectacularly.

To try and use the tournament to play silly ‘culture war’ games was sickening, but was also ultimately futile. Southgate and his heroes won that match 10-0 with their unity, positivity and sheer class! I am very pleased that our council is offering Southwark born England hero Jadon Sancho ‘Freedom of the Borough’ to recognise his talent, contribution and his status as a role model.

Someone not exactly acting as a role model however, is our wayward prime

minister, who is rolling back some of the support previously offered during covid, as well as taking a big gamble lifting protections against covid.

Infections and hospitalisations are reaching huge levels again and the UK has already suffered a terrible excess death rate, awful economic damage and seen the government squander more than any other country.

The virus is still with us and is still very dangerous. My brother and one of my team have COVID and others in my immediate family and staff are isolating, just like 500,000 other Brits ordered to self-isolate. The fact that the prime minister and chancellor tried to avoid playing by the rules and then lied about it is simply shameful after so many instances of rule-breaking by leading Tories, like Cummings and Hancock.

Please keep wearing masks on public transport and ensure you get your vaccinations. The NHS has worked tremendously hard to get people doublejabbed in Southwark, including using walk-in schemes at the Tate Modern

After the huge recent fire at the Elephant and Castle I went to meet the new Fire Brigade Commander at the Old Kent Road station to pass on my thanks for the speed, courage and professionalism of his crews who were able to bring things under control so quickly and ensure that no one was seriously injured despite the dramatic scenes. It was also lovely to see a sweet lady also drop by whilst I was there to thank the crew for rescuing her from a lift the day before!

I have been really pleased to get back out and about with mobile advice sessions in our community in Walworth, Bermondsey and in Rotherhithe in two weeks. I hope the council reopens community halls now but have invested in a gazebo so let me know if you want me to literally pitch-up in your area to hear concerns and help!

magine if a council facing the climate emergency was run like a theatre company or workers’ co-op. In my dreams, the first gathering sounds a bit like this:

Welcome everyone, both old friends and people new to this project.

This is the big idea –actually, two

ideas in one: we’re going to stop burning fossil fuels, and we’re going to protect plant and animal life systems. We don’t know exactly what this will look like yet. We’ve brought you together – with your specific experience, skills and knowledge – to make it happen. We’ll look after each other and have some fun while we get there. There’s an initial deadline – but this is a long-term project. As ever, the budget is tight…

It’s been rather less energising to trawl through the Southwark Council ‘Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan’ published this month. It includes this vacuous line: ‘To be carbon neutral by 2030, Southwark must reduce car journeys to a minimum by 2030.’

In that imagined meeting of mine, everyone is immediately asking questions: What does ‘minimum’ mean, in numbers? How do I sell that idea to the public?

How can we tell if we’ve done it?

What if all Southwark staff and citizens were invited to devise the action plan? Take a target like this, based on actual figures for

Dutch cities: For journeys under 3 miles, more people cycle than drive.

The conversation might go…

• First, we’d need to ensure that all routes to school are safe.

• What about heavy shopping?

• Could we work with a local cargo bike delivery company?

• Set up a library of trailers and cargo bikes? Southwark Cyclists have contacts.

• What about older or disabled people who want to cycle?

• Let’s call Cycling Without Age and Wheels for Wellbeing and include trishaws, hand-cycles, tandems and side-by-side bikes …

And so on. Now imagine doing the same for food and housing. We get better ideas, with more public support, when they are developed by a diverse group of people. And, as Gabriella Gomez-Mont puts it, imagination is not a luxury.

The case for housing over office space seems clear

L

endlease’s early proposals for what is known as Plot H1 at Elephant Park were for a ‘mixed use’ development - usually planning parlance for housing, retail and commercial space.

The regeneration scheme in Elephant and Castle was granted indicative planning permission, with consent needed for next-step, individual applications as each phase of the redevelopment was reached.

What is striking in the public comments made both in favour and against the plans is the number of people voicing their approval for the new park and who have favourable things to say about some of Lendlease’s work so far. But many of them believe any positives in the scheme could be undone by prioritising an eighteen-floor office complex over housing.

Elephant and Castle’s regeneration schemes have a troubled relationship with housing campaigners, with the demolition of the Heygate Estate, followed by a regeneration with just 25 per cent affordable housing seen as a bitter blow for the wider community.

Lendlease says its proposals are responding to a clear need for office space in the area, as evidenced in various key planning documents outlining the future of the borough and its demographic pressures, such as the New Southwark Plan. All were created before the pandemic and the shift to working from home, which has hastened a long-term trend for flexible working already evidenced in workplaces across London.

In the meantime, an end to the eviction ban, winding down the furlough scheme, ongoing concerns over the ‘pingdemic’ and fears workers will not return to London in their droves are all raising questions over how the local economy will work and how job losses could add to pre-existing housing pressures.

Despite remaining the largest council housing landlord in London, there are currently over 15,000 households on Southwark’s housing register and the local authority has lost over 17,000 through the Conservative’s right-to-buy policy; a scheme over which the council can exercise no control.

The council has previously claimed that of 595 tenanted homes on the Heygate before demolition, 99 per cent had chosen to take up other council or housing associations within the borough, with ‘many’ staying specifically in the Elephant and Castle areas - disputing long-standing claims that a majority were ‘pushed out’.

Despite this, there is an obvious and worsening need for housing in the area which is simply not being met. As we report this week, new housing is being increasingly shoehorned into existing estates while the arguments for more office space seem thin. And yet this site is the perfect place for some new homes.

In 2012 Lendlease was able to secure an agreement to provide only 25 per cent ‘affordable’ housing. In 2021, Tooley Street’s administration has already publicly said its post-pandemic priorities are changing, with housing a particular priority. How it responds to this application will show how seriously we can take this promise.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell-born England footballer Jadon Sancho is to be awarded the Freedom of Southwark - the highest civic award from the borough.

Southwark Council intends to bestow the honour on the footballer, subject to formal agreement.

Sancho, who played for England at the Euros and is in the process of joining Manchester United, is a 'diamond in Southwark's crown', according to borough mayor councillor Barrie Hargrove.

Cllr Hargrove said: “Watching Jadon play in the Euro tournament was incredible, I felt, like many residents, that he is a diamond in Southwark’s crown and we could not be more proud of him and what he achieved for this country – the team brought everyone together and gave us hope and joy when we needed it most.

"This is why I am recommending that he be considered for Freedom of the Borough, the highest accolade we can give.”

Sancho represented Southwark at the 2011 London Youth Games team, where they won the under-11s football tournament.

The scheme, was designed to encourage young people to take up fun, competitive sports and activities for free in their local area and celebrated its 40th birthday in 2017.

He was also part of the England youth team that won the 2017 FIFA U-17 World Cup and made his debut for the senior team in 2018.

The 21-year-old was one of three England players to miss a penalty in the final against Italy on Sunday, and was subjected to racial abuse online in the aftermath, but also praised for

his bravery in volunteering to take a spot kick.

Councillor Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, said: “Jadon is one of the best sportspeople this country has, and that he is homegrown talent from this borough should be celebrated.

"He is an incredible role model to our young people and we want him to know that he did us proud.

"Like many others, I was deeply saddened and angry to see the racism players suffered after the final match – outrage that was echoed by Southwark’s residents.

"However it was fantastic to see the outpouring of affection and solidarity with our players.

"There is no place for racism – Southwark is a place which nurtures everyone, and that is why we have such exceptional talent playing for our country.

"Jadon exemplifies our Southwark Stands Together values and deserves the highest honour we can give.”

The fire, last Thursday morning, July 15, was in a flat on the 21st floor of the distinctive 35-storey tower on St Gabriel Walk.

There were no reports of any injuries and damage was restricted to part of the flat's outside balcony.

Around 200 residents had left the building before the brigade arrived.

Firefighters were called at around 10.15am and the fire was under control an hour later. Five fire engines and around 35 firefighters from Lambeth, Old Kent Road, Dowgate and Dockhead fire stations were at the scene. The cause of the fire is still being investigated, but London Fire Brigade warned its efforts had been

hampered by clutter.

Station commander Jon Singleton said: "There were a lot of items stored on the balcony which contributed to the severity of the blaze.

"Fortunately, the swift action and hard work of crews prevented the fire from spreading inside the property.

"There is some safety advice you can follow to avoid balcony fires, including never storing combustible items on your balcony as they can catch light and contribute to fires spreading.

"We also advise that if you are smoking on your balcony, always ensure your cigarette is properly out and never throw it over the side as it could catch light to possessions on balconies below or next to yours."

It comes a few weeks after a major electrical fire near Elephant and Castle station was put out by hundreds of firefighters.

Six hundred people had to be evacuated from nearby buildings.

Nunhead machete attacker is ‘still on the loose’

The man was seen with the machete last Tuesday week, July 13, on Wroxton Road. Police were called but did not find the assailant.

A Met Police spokesperson said: “Police were called at 16:19hrs on Tuesday, 13 July to Wroxton Road, SE15 after a male was reportedly seen with a machete and another male injured.

“Officers attended and carried out an area search. One male, aged 18, was found with a slash injury to his head. His condition is not lifethreatening.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing.”

Local director tipped as next big thing

Jennifer Martin, who was born in the US but moved to London to study fine art, has been named a ‘Lodestar’ by Film London - meaning the organisation is tipping her for future success.

Ms Martin’s films often focus on the theme of immigration and the problems posed by the ‘hostile environment’ policy brought in at the Home Office under Theresa May and continued under Amber Rudd, under whom the Windrush Scandal took place.

One of Ms Martin’s works is called TEETH, about people having trouble while applying for a UK marriage visa.

Ms Martin told the News: “The research for 'TEETH' began with a letter leaked

by The Guardian in April 2018 amid reporting on the Windrush Scandal. In January 2017, former Home Secretary Amber Rudd wrote to Prime Minister Theresa May, 'illegal and would-be illegal migrants and the public…need to know that our immigration system has "teeth."'

“The language Rudd used seemed eerily fitting, mirroring what it can feel like in being an immigrant in the UK under a system that wants to consume you, churn you up, and spit you out, somewhere elsewhere. Rudd's ‘teeth' made plain the viciousness of the hostile government, an upfront embrace of the intended cruelty.

“I connected to Amber Rudd's statement as an immigrant. When I

began development for 'TEETH', I was applying for Indefinite Leave to Remain, transitioning from a spousal visa.

Nevertheless, it was crucial for me to go beyond myself and my own experiences and be in conversation with others.

“Ahead of writing the script, I held oneto-one informal interviews with a small group of people in the UK and in Germany around the immigration processes they experienced. I find that I work best collaboratively and in dialogue with others.”

After moving to the UK to study, Ms Martin said she had spent the majority of her adult life in London. Despite the problems she has had with the Home Office, she said it would be “difficult to imagine leaving” the capital.

“My community is in London; I've been fortunate to find, connect, and relate to people through education, projects, the work I do through not/nowhere, the London-based cooperative, and more. not/nowhere focuses on developing black and other non-white filmmakers through workshops, screenings and equipment hire, although it is open to everyone. Ms Martin added: “As a cooperative, we operate on the economic frontline of racial justice within the arts, working to dismantle the myth that artists should, for esteem, inclusion, or visibility, participate in unpaid institutional work.”

The Lodestars programme celebrates those within film, TV and games who shine with outstanding creativity or craftsmanship, tipped to go on to ever greater works in coming years,” a

spokesperson for Film London said.

Past winners include Joy GharoroAkpojotor, producer of Blue Story, which depicts boys caught up in warring gangs in Peckham and Deptford, and Koby Adom, who will be returning for a second season of the BBC’s Noughts + Crosses.

Ms Martin’s work is less commercially focused so far and she said it can be a challenge to secure funding for projects, as she is determined to pay all the crew London living wage at a minimum.

But despite her sometimeschallenging subject matter, Ms Martin may be looking to move more towards the mainstream. She is looking to develop her upcoming short film Scratch the belly I bare, which shows a queer black British reality dating show taking place amid an unknown atmospheric danger, into a feature. Other works from her back catalogue could also be developed for film and TV, she said.

Just twenty minutes later officers received a second call about a stabbing and found a seventeen-year-old nearby, who had also been knifed. The London Ambulance Service (LAS) took him to hospital.

At 3.40 on Saturday morning, four hours after the original attack, a third man, aged 25, came to hospital with stab wounds.

None of the three men are in a lifethreatening condition.

Six men have already been arrested for suspected grievous bodily harm (GBH) in

connection with the attacks and remain in custody but police need more information and want witnesses to come forward.

Officers have already found two knives near the scene and are looking into CCTV from the area. The investigation continues.

Police appeal after three stabbings near London Eye

kit@southwarknews.co.uk Police are calling for witnesses after three men were stabbed in the same attack on the South Bank over the weekend.

Police were called to reports of a stabbing near the London Eye on Friday night, July 16, at 11.40pm. They went with an ambulance crew and found a nineteenyear-old man with stab wounds, who was taken to hospital.

Kevin Benn first came across the Southwark Construction Skills Centre when his school arranged for him to carry out some work experience at the centre - he loved it and didn’t look back!

It also included how to establish a work area, and protection and safety of that workplace, as well as reinstating and excavating highway surfaces. He also gained a CSCS card, which allows him to work on any building site.

Kevin was invited to attend a follow-up employment programme organised through the Construction Skills Fund. The programme opened Kevin’s eyes to a whole new working world and new career possibilities that he didn’t know existed, and paved the path for his journey into a new career.

After completing the course, Kevin stayed on at SCSC and started his highways apprenticeship, with his goal firmly set on a career in highways and working his way up the career ladder.

Kevin attended a three-week highways course at the Centre - it covered all aspects of working on highways, building safety and regulations. The course dealt with themes such as excavating holes and trenches, manual digging, health and safety, and welfare in the workplace.

The training and experience Kevin gained at SCSC has had a massive impact on him and his family’s life, as Kevin now has a clear career path, a promising future and importantly, is now able to contribute financially to his family.

Whilst looking for work, Iesha Addy found the Southwark Construction Skills Centre through its partner Lendlease’s not-for-profit career help organisation, BeOnSite.

The Centre was recommended to Iesha as a place where she could gain great training to develop a solid career path in the construction industry.

She enrolled in and completed a Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) Site Management Training Scheme.

She now feels more confident in herself, as well as what to look out for when on site. She is more aware of the different kinds of work that can be going on at any one time on site and is able to analyse that work and the consequences of each task on others much better.

What she loved about the Centre was the overall service she received as a learner, as well as the tutors, who went over and above what might be expected in ensuring her and her fellow trainees all took part in the sessions and got the maximum out of them.

Construction of the new centre in Canada Water has now completed with our opening on Thursday 31st July. Opening hours will be from 8.30am to 5pm Monday to Friday, with community-based activities planned for Saturdays.

After five great years at its home in Elephant Park, and following the temporary stop in Bermondsey, the Southwark Construction Skills Centre (SCSC) has now moved to its permanent home at Canada Water.

The new centre also gives residents access to a digital library and basic digital training, as well as the use of computer equipment, all for free. This of course will be done in a Covid-safe way, with full training provided.

In the coming months, the community-centred skills and training centre, which has been supported throughout by Southwark Council and run by The Skills Centre, will be welcoming Southwark residents to Hawker House in Canada Water thanks to ArtInvest, as part of the British Land Canada Water Masterplan for the next decade.

It has been an honour to work with the Elephant Park community and to help so many people learn new skills and train to gain great jobs in the construction industry – we’ve simply had the best experience. The Skills Centre now looks forward to doing the same again for the wider Southwark community, including those in and around Bermondsey and Rotherhithe.

During its time at Elephant and Castle, the Centre has trained more than 10,000 Southwark residents, helped create more than 3,000 local construction jobs and contributed around £40 million in social value to the local economy. This is something everyone involved at the Centre it is hugely proud of – our trainers and staff, our wonderful partners and the employers we work with, and the thousands who have trained with us - and we will continue to build on this success at Canada Water.

The aim of the Centre was always to remain flexible and to move to where it was most needed in supporting further construction work in and around the Southwark area, and this is the first move it has made since opening in 2016. The move is a joint initiative between The Skills Centre, Southwark Council, British Land and ArtInvest.

SCSC will be offering the same opportunities at Canada Water, with employment prospects, apprenticeships and pre-employment training for local residents, as well as continuing its schools’ programme; inspiring Southwark school children to consider the varied jobs on offer through a career in construction.

Dark and Tender Cake

...cake begins on one of those hot summer evenings. The air hums with heat, its stifling tension rolls off the middle-aged woman on stage. She paces back and forth across her living room, she plays one record, she throws it away, she opens the fridge but chooses nothing, she swigs wine from an already opened bottle.

She is, it seems, completely alive and utterly alone. And then there comes the knock, writes Madeleine Kelly.

Sixteen-year-old Eshe has come to visit her mother and she brings with her a lifetime of uncertainty and love. …cake is a part of a trilogy by babirye bukilwa but the play could easily stand alone. Centred on the intense and at times violent bond between mother and daughter Sissy and Eshe, there is more than enough substance here to fill the hour and a half run time. bukilwa’s script is lyrical and dense, unpacking the pair’s dynamic in consistently fresh and interesting ways.

As the play progresses the author pulls the threads of the pair’s love taut.

Eshe, it transpires, has fled the home on account of her mother’s substance misuse and mental instability. Sissy, as frightened of someone staying as she is of being left, towers above her.

Danielle Kassarate’s performance of Sissy is at once mesmerising and terrifying. The audience is left like Eshe in its wake, too horrified to watch, too captivated to look away.

Meanwhile, Donna Danya plays Eshe with heartbreaking vulnerability, a girl on the cusp of adulthood.

Though the show’s themes are consistently dark, there is plenty of tenderness here too. bukilwa handles their subjects deftly giving the audience cause to laugh more often than gasp. Such careful handling was no doubt made possible by the decision to hire an all Black creative team.

This commitment to providing a safe space for those involved in the project

translated to the stage, allowing both the actresses and the audience to hold the story with an unusual lightness.

The forces visited upon Sissy and Eshe’s relationship are far bigger than the pair. But the play does not just function as an exposé of these injustices but a love letter to those who make their way through them.

There is as much joyful resistance here as there is pain. It is hard to say quite what the result is but this is not a piece interested in result so much as

process. As the play thrums towards its climax, it is clear that bukilwa’s work will stay with its audience for a long time, a testament to its weight and its tenderness.

The Comeback should stay forever

The warm ups dream of making it big while the old timers are happy churning out the same old stuff that got them on the telly in the 70s. I would not have thought so much bad comedy in one show would make something quite brilliant, but it did.

The duo who created this wonderful piece of theatre is Ben Ashenden and Alex Owen who are so good that for the first half hour I was looking for an escape route out of this bad comedy hell. Then I remembered that this was not a bad comedy duo but two actors playing those characters, and in amongst the unfunny dialogue was glimpses of true genius. They were actually producing comedy that was flying way over most of the audience’s heads and I had to stop myself from being one of the very few people laughing out loud on several occasions.

The Comeback is a play about a bad comedy duo who warm up for an old bad comedy duo, writes Michael Holland...

Jimmy and Sid, the kind of act that filled TV programming schedules throughout the 60s and 70s, that it truly sunk in for me. The Comeback then became a tour de force, a wonderful mix of farce, slapstick, surrealism, with hints of the absurd

as the two actors played the four characters in this echo of Noises Off. There were brilliant sight gags and Keystone chases as the two couples battled each other to catch the eye of some Hollywood bigwig they had heard was in to see the show. And

when some poor guy from the front was pulled on to the stage the crowd went wild when they realised it was David Walliams. Plus, more cheers when Matt Lucas appeared too. What a treat.

And they don’t give their surprise guests an easy ride. Walliams was ridiculed, slung in a closet (Ooh, er, missus) and tasered. The writers hope to have star guests in every night and in the past, before the original lockdown, they had Clare Balding, Ian McKellen and Danny Dyer, so you never know who you will get to see.

But that added extra is just a nice bonus to the real fun and laughter created by Ashenden and Owen under the fantastic direction of Emily Burns.

The Comeback should never leave.

Mirror Rooms reflect artist’s life Yayoi Kusama has been creating art for six decades and is now once again back at Tate Modern with her Infinity Mirror Rooms, a mesmerising blend between a seaside Hall of Mirrors and a starlit flotation tank, writes Michael Holland.

This exhibition offers the chance for visitors to see two of Kusama’s muchloved installations alongside films and photographs charting her past work from the mid-60s onward, all of which give historical context when we see Kusama revisit earlier motifs.

She was very prolific during the 60s and 70s while in New York where she came to international attention. In that time her work encompassed painting, performance, sculpture, writing, fashion design and installation; footage from this very productive era has been discovered and is shown here. Filmed by British academic John Jones, it shows Kusama in her New York studio and records her early sculptural work.

Walking Piece is a slide show of photographs taken by Eikoh Hosoe of the artist posing around New York’s industrial district wearing a kimono and carrying a parasol in a performance that ‘highlights her outside status and feelings of urban alienation’.

But it is the two Infinity Mirror Rooms that grab the attention. You enter Chandelier of Grief alone and are left to work out where the walls and floor are. Is that a mirror or a space to walk through? Eventually, you end up shuffling slowly along, your hand running along the mirrored wall as a guide, while all the time never knowing when the lights are going to flicker and die to leave you in black solitude and feeling unbalanced.

Filled with the Brilliance of Life, one of the artist’s largest installations, was originally created for her 2012 retrospective. Once again you are left to venture in alone. The mirrored walls endlessly multiply the suspended lights until you believe you are staring out into space.

Both mirror rooms are ultimately meditative and leave you with a feeling of calm. Even now, several hours after leaving Tate Modern, I can take myself back to those rooms and let serenity wash over me.

Born in Japan in 1929, Yayoi Kusama experienced mental health problems in the 70s and admitted herself to hospital. She lives there still today, with her studio close by where she writes novels and poems and continues to paint.

rotherhithe teachers’ murderous ‘love triangle’

1924: Redriff teacher shoots his colleague and then himself after ‘stalking’ a female teacher The next time you visit the Tesco Superstore at Surrey Quays, take a glance across the road at the large red iron bridge near the exit. It stands there as a reminder of the area’s industrial past, but less well known, it was also the scene of a tragic crime nearly 100 years ago, writes Neil Crossfield...

It was the 24th of July 1924, and the last day before the children and staff of Redriff Road School in Rotherhithe broke up for the summer holidays.

On this day, many of the young boys remembered seeing two of their teachers leaving together, as they often did, and walking towards the gates of Canada Dock. This should have been a happy day, but within minutes the mood had darkened, and the two teachers lay dead in the street.

They were William Holmes, aged 42, and George Leonard Kay, aged 35.

Unsurprisingly, the salacious nature of this case meant that it was extensively covered in both the local and national press. It is through these articles, covering both the incident and inquest, and a letter found at the scene, that we can uncover the distressing details of this story.

along Redriff Road until they reached the iron bridge near to the entrance of Canada Dock. Holmes was seen to try jumping into the water but was dragged back by Kay. After this short scuffle, things appeared to have calmed down and the men walked on.

However, suddenly, Holmes pulled out a pistol and fired at Kay’s chest.

This caused the younger man to stumble, but not to fall, as the bullet had inadvertently hit the book that he had in his jacket pocket. The coroner noted that, in an ‘irony of fate’, this book was published by the Royal Life Saving Society. This was most likely a first aid instruction booklet detailing resuscitation methods, potentially extremely useful for a teacher working in an area surrounded by water.

As Kay fell forward onto the ground, Holmes followed with a second shot to the base of the skull, killing Kay instantly. Holmes then immediately turned the gun on himself, firing a single shot into his temple. The headmaster of the school, William Lawrence, was informed about the tragedy and rushed to the scene. On seeing his two teachers lying dead before him, he fainted.

What had transpired between these two respected teachers to lead to their deaths? The Surrey Docks were a tough, hard environment; violence was not uncommon among the dockers, but this behaviour was most unusual in men like Holmes and Kay. It was noted at the inquest that they ‘generally conducted themselves as sedate members of a sedate profession’. The inquest would reveal a tangled ‘love triangle’, with both victims allegedly vying for the affection of a young female teacher called Miss Gladys Lillian Maude Franckeiss. However, as we shall see, this ‘love triangle’ may have just been a fiction, in the mind of William Holmes.

Holmes had been born in the Tower of London around 1880. He had served in the army from 1901 till he was discharged in 1922 with an exemplary service record. The 1911 census shows he is living in Staffordshire with his wife and child.

History schoolmaster. His first daughter was born in Lahore, India (now Pakistan) so he may have seen service overseas.

Another daughter was born in 1912 but unfortunately his wife Edith Forrest (nee Moore) had died in 1913.

George Leonard Kay had been born in Poplar in 1888 and on the 1911 census he is shown as an ‘assistant teacher’ in a London County Council school. He had married Emmeline Lillian Tutt in Blackheath in 1914.

They had a son, Harold Tutt Kay; born in 1921.

Gladys Franckeiss (nee Plastow) had been born in Medway, Kent in 1893.

Research shows she had married a John Henry Cox in 1920 when she was 23 years old, her marriage certificate noting she is already a widow. She had previously married Herbert Cecil Franckeiss in 1918, a soldier in the London Regiment but he had died on 21 January 1919. These previous marriages are not mentioned at the inquest or in news reports, possibly to ‘spice up’ the story that she was some sort of femme fatale.

Gladys usually taught at Credon Road school, South Bermondsey, but would work at the Redriff school play centre from 5 pm. The Redriff School which features in this story, was destroyed in an air raid on the 7th September 1940 and is not the modern day Redriff Primary school.

Holmes appeared to have developed an unhealthy obsession with Miss Franckeiss. They had been friends at some point, but this relationship soured. Holmes had proposed to Gladys twice and was twice refused.

Despite this, Holmes believed that he was engaged to Gladys but there was no evidence of this. Holmes started stalking Franckeiss at her flat and she eventually had to move out due to his harassment. One of Holmes’ diaries suggests that his unwanted attention had been going on from at least 6th September 1923, but it is likely to have started way before this date.

Apart from claims of unrequited love or illicit affairs, the inquest revealed that there was other history between the two men. When Detective Inspector Bradley went to Holmes’ rooms in Jerningham Road, New Cross, they found correspondence which indicated that solicitors had been involved in a dispute between the teachers, after Kay strongly objected to references made by Holmes about him. Kay had recently been passed over for promotion in favour of Holmes, though Kay had been working at the school for eleven years.

Yet, most astonishingly, it was revealed that in previous months Kay had been absent from work for six weeks due to an illness he attributed to being poisoned with strychnine by Holmes. Kay told the head teacher that his rival had confessed that he had done so and said that although ‘he had made a mess of it, I hoped to do it better next time’. When the headmaster confronted Holmes he denied it and Kay later withdrew his allegations.

It is telling that both men had bought themselves guns in the months leading up to the fateful day. Both had served in the army and would have been proficient at handling firearms.

Kay had bought two revolvers and cartridges, telling his wife that they would be used at school sports days,

Holmes had bought a five-chambered revolver and 50 rounds of ammunition in January of that year, supposedly for target shooting. These rounds were all later accounted for. Some 45 rounds of ammunition were later found in Holmes’ rooms, two unfired rounds remained in the gun found at the scene and three rounds had been discharged. It seemed no target practice had taken place and the gun had been bought for one purpose only.

When Police Inspector Stone arrived at the crime scene, he found a letter in Holmes’ pocket, addressed to ‘Miss Franckeiss, Girls Department, L.C.C. School, Credon Street, Deptford’. The contents of this letter were read out at the inquest held at the Rotherhithe Town Hall, where it was reported

When you receive this you will be free from the scoundrel who is ruining your life. He will be dead and you will be free to start life again ... that it was ‘very long and written in somewhat disjointed phrases.’

It is perhaps in this last written testimony of Holmes that we get some sort of impression of his mental state at the time of the murder and his suicide. The jury, members of the

public and the assorted journalists, must have been astounded when the coroner read the letter, for it clearly demonstrated that when Holmes went to work that morning, he did so with a loaded pistol and in the knowledge that both he and George Kay would be dead by the end of the day. The following are a selection of excerpts from the letter.

He started, “Dear Miss Franckeiss, -Pardon the last letter I address to you.

When you receive this you will be free from the scoundrel who is ruining your life. He will be dead and you will be free to start life again, and young enough to make use of your opportunities’.

Holmes goes on to tell her that he had recently confronted Kay and warned him off continuing any relationship with her. Ominously he writes, “…

he would not do as he liked with you or I should kill him. I have recognised from the first that this would be the probable end… It is better to think of a girl like you lying in my arms’ taking and returning my kisses and looking up at my face than lying and lying to shield a beast of a married man... I know you always regarded me as a bit of a prig, but perhaps on one’s deathbed one is allowed a little praise… Give up reading Wells and keep clear of married men.

Also get rid of your love of theatrical life, and get back to your motto, ‘Pure, free and unabashed’...”

He finished the letter, “after all what is left of my life is not worth much, has not been for the last ten years; but make the best of your new chance, there’s a good girl. W.H.” Of course, we will now never know what had happened between William and Gladys so cannot totally rule out that they had, at some time, formed a romantic relationship. It is also possible that Gladys and George were involved in some sort of illicit affair, but it is highly likely that most of this was in the mind of William Holmes.

His behaviour and unhinged writings indicate that he was both besotted and obsessed with her. Today he would be considered a stalker and legal measures could have been taken to protect Gladys. It is impossible to gauge a man’s mental state after such a long period, but when one considers his erratic behaviour, it is not too difficult to surmise that Holmes was suffering some form of mental illness.

At the inquest, both Gladys Franckeiss and Lillian Kay, George’s widow, gave evidence which refuted any allegation that the two of them were romantically involved. Lillian had met Gladys on several occasions when she had gone to the Kays’ house in Catford, for choral society practice. Franckeiss divulged that the relationship she had with George Kay was purely professional but told the inquest that she had asked him to keep the location of her new flat from Holmes, who had been accosting her at her previous address. Holmes had asked her to marry him twice but, on both occasions, she had turned him down. She had even taken to wearing her mother’s engagement ring in the hope that this would deter his unwanted attention.

She told the coroner: “If I stood within a couple of yards of Mr Holmes for some time he was often taken with absolute shuddering from head to foot, even the flesh of his face seemed to shake. I have never seen it before and it frightened me. He would change colour and go yellowish grey”. She thought that Holmes was not a mentally sound man, and she was physically afraid of him.

The facts presented to the inquest jury were clear and it did not take them long to conclude that Holmes had murdered Kay and then committed suicide.

What became of those left behind?

The 1939 Register shows that Kay’s widow, Emmeline, had remarried.

She passed away in 1985. The same register reveals that Gladys Franckeiss passed away in August 1961. She was unmarried, and living in a Roman Catholic convent in Findon near Worthing, East Sussex.

We will never know if she ever told anyone about this dramatic episode in her life.

The Council of the London Borough of Southwark hereby gives notice that to enable works to be carried out by, Thames Water, City Lifting, Wilmott Dixon, it, made, an order the effect which will be to prohibit vehicular traffic from entering part of the above named roads.

Surrey faced a must-win game at the College, their final fixture, and knocked off a chase of 178 with 10 balls to spare.

Smith set things up with 60 from 47 balls and Evans took his side to the verge of victory with 58 from 36.

Having been sent in, the home side only played in fits and starts. A more measured start than previous matches saw them to 68 for 1 in the eighth over but then then lost three wickets in 18 balls.

Jacks opened the chase with a flick off Dan Worrall for six over deep square and a swing over long-off as Ryan Higgins conceded 19 from the fifth over but he skewed Josh Shaw to deep cover to fall for 24 in 14 balls.

Jamie Smith drove his namesake Tom over extra-cover and swept him for four more and at the halfway stage Surrey were on course at 88 for one.

Laurie Evans cleverly paddleswept Howell for his first boundary before slog-sweeping him for six. He then struck Worrall over long-on to effectively end the contest.

Despite defeat, the final day of the Festival was thoroughly enjoyed by the home supporters on a glorious day. And goodness did they need to drink it in. Their next chance to see the first XI may be the penultimate day of August, if not later.

Crawford-Khan returned to have Rivers caught at midwicket, and struck again two balls later to make it 223-6 after 49.4 overs, but Chathuranga, with 35 not out off 30 balls, lifted the score to 251 before the declaration after 53 overs.

Crawford-Khan, with 3-39 off eight overs, and Ahmed Khan, with 2-66 off 14, were the only bowlers to take a wicket.

Dulwich were left with 47 overs to get the runs, but got off to a poor start as the opening bowlers each took a wicket, removing Chris Purshouse for 5 and Lachlan Skinner for 13 to make it 28-2 after ten overs.

The Epsom innings was dominated

by Simon Rivers, who made 131 off 145 balls, his maiden first team century.

Dulwich had put their opponents

added 30 for the third wicket, but neither was able to force the pace against tight bowling.

Chathuranga’s leg spin posed particular problems, as he dismissed Brown for 22 and Patel for 19, both by means of sharp return catches, and followed up by snaring Michael Harms for 4. He completed his first nine over spell with figures of 3-12.

Opening bowler Fazalhaq Jan returned to dismiss George Pearson for a single and reduce Dulwich to 76-6 in the 29th over.

Skipper Jon Lodwick joined James Schofield to add 21 for the seventh wicket before edging to slip for 13.

Ahmed Khan thus joined Schofield at 97-7 with 12.3 overs left and no

alternative but to try and bat out for the draw. This they did successfully.

Zeb tried six different bowlers but was unable to separate them as they took Dulwich to 121-7 at the end of the innings. Khan survived 41 balls in making 7, while Schofield finished with 27 off 67.

Dulwich have taken just six points from their last two matches, but had previously built up such a gap that they still remain second, though Old Wimbledonians are now only five points behind them in third place.

Dulwich will be looking to return to winning ways this weekend when they have a crucial match at home to Bank of England, who are just four points above them at the top.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk DULWICH HAMLET were beaten 5-0 by a strong Crystal Palace under-23 side at Champion Hill on Tuesday night.

Dulwich were 4-0 down at the break and their south London neighbours added another in the second half to comfortably wrap up the win.

Palace raced into a 2-0 lead within five minutes. The young Eagles’ David Omilabu got the first as he fired home from the edge of the box.

Gavin Rose is still assembling his squad for their August 14 kick-off to the National League season and it showed as a much more coordinated Palace piled on the pressure.

John-Kymani Gordon beat a defender to double the advantage and in the fifteenth minute, after Charlie Grainger had saved Nya Kirby’s free-kick from 25-yards, from the corner Gordon crossed for Omilabu to finish from close range for his second and Palace’s third.

Palace refused to let up and made it 4-0 just 20 minutes in as the referee played advantage after Omilabu had ben fouled

by Grainger inside the box and Gordon finished into an empty Dulwich net.

The drinks break on a scorching hot south London evening came at the right time for the hosts and they almost got one back immediately after it but Danny Mills couldn’t beat Joe Whitworth in the Palace goal.

Gordon then shot wide of goal as he just failed to complete his hat-trick before the break.

Palace showed their class at Champion Hill Ademola Ola-Adebomi came close with his shot that went just past the post, Dulwich rallied but Whitworth made a double-save.

Just past the hour mark, the visitors made it five as Lion Bello slotted in OlaAdebomi’s ball across the box.

Jack Holland hit the post for the home side late on, but Gary Issott’s team preserved their clean sheet in East Dulwich.

FANS RETURNED to Champion Hill for the first time since December to see Dulwich Hamlet defeated 2-0

by Millwall under-23s in their latest pre-season friendly last Thursday.

Lions midfielder Sean O’Brien was the standout performer in what was an expectedly tame contest. The nineteenyear-old opened the scoring on the stroke of half-time with a fine effort into the bottom left corner from eighteen yards.

Dulwich manager Gavin Rose and assistant Junior Kadi gave starts to five of last season’s players, while four new additions and two trialists made up the starting XI. One of the trialists was ex-Crystal Palace and Leyton Orient winger James Dayton, while recently-signed winger Jazzi Barnum-Bobb looked particularly lively on the right flank, and AJ Harris-Sealy also turned out at Champion Hill for the first time up top.

Attendance for this game was capped at 600, but the ground is set to be fully open from the start of this season.

O’Brien was first to go close after eight minutes, hitting a free-kick well but over the bar, before Harris-Sealy skimmed the

top netting with a set-play of his own towards the end of the first-half. It was an incensed O’Brien who conceded the free-kick, remonstrating with the referee just a minute prior to him beating Hamlet keeper Charlie Grainger to make it 1-0 at the break.

Early into the second-half, former Bromley defender and Dulwich skipper for the evening Jack Holland glanced a near-post header wide of Joe Wright’s Millwall net, and in the 65th minute the busy O’Brien found the hands of Dulwich’s trialist keeper, brought on midway through, with a weak side-foot effort.

But it was the same trialist who gifted Millwall their 2-0 advantage after 78 minutes. A poor kick-out found its way to substitute Tom Leahy, though the midfielder’s dink 20 yards from goal was sublime and cruelly punished the Hamlet’s keeper.

It was nearly 3-0 a couple of minutes later but Tyrese Briscoe, also on in the second period, could only find the sidenetting from six yards out. The visitors also fielded four trialists, all of whom started the match.

The Hamlet kick off their fourth season in National League South against Chippenham Town in East Dulwich on Saturday, August 14.

Supporters returned at a capacity of 600 for a friendly against Millwall under-23s last week.

In an update on Dulwich’s website, Clasper said: “We have reviewed all of the responses [to a season-ticket holder survey] and there will be a series of updates coming before the season kicks off, but we are pleased to be able to already confirm the following: a return to the much-loved physical season ticket; use of any entrance including the main door; a return of the bar discount for season ticket holders; introduction of reserved seating for those less able to stand.”

Lions keeper backs Gareth Southgate

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk ENGLAND’S YOUNG stars are in good hands – according to a current Millwall player who has first-hand experience of Gareth Southgate’s methods.

After earning caps for England at under-18 and under-20 levels, George Long was called up by Southgate for an under-21 game against Scotland in 2013.

Also while at Sheffield United, Long was part of squads for Uefa European Under-21 Championship qualifiers in 2015.

England reached the final of the European Championship at Wembley this month and lost 3-2 to Italy on penalties.

Long says Southgate is the same in person as he comes across on TV: composed, articulate, and decisive.

Southgate took responsibility for selecting Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka to take penalties. There was some criticism of Southgate as Rashford and Sancho were sent on in the last minute of extra-time and Saka had never taken a spot-kick before in senior football. All three missed to hand Italy the title.

But Long has the utmost respect for the Three Lions boss.

“I was in the under-21 squad for two or three camps. He was the manager along with Steve Holland as his assistant,” Long said.

“I don’t know him very well but I’ve been around him enough in terms of training and match-days to get a good picture of what he’s like. I think his character you see on TV is pretty much how he is in real life as well in terms of his calmness, decision-making.

“You can tell that his management style is really suited to the national team and getting to the European final is unbelievable, after 50-odd years, the first time they did.

“All credit to him and his staff and the players.”

Jordan Pickford saved two penalties but Gianluigi Donnarumma made those three saves and was named player of the tournament.

Long added: “I’d say there’s probably less pressure on the keeper in the penalty shootout than the player. Because obviously the expectation is that the player will score.

“It’s a tough one. Donnarumma made a couple of great saves but so did Pickford. To save Jorginho’s pen, it was a really good save, Jorginho has got to be one of the best in the world at penalty-taking.

“Sometimes it’s the luck of the draw. If you save a couple of penalties you think you’ve got a good chance of going through, but sometimes it doesn’t quite work out like that.

“From a goalkeeper’s point of view you’re relishing it a little bit because you’ve got the opportunity to be the hero.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh has urged fans to “work with us” if there are “teething problems” when The Den reopens at normal capacity next month.

England moved to Step 4 of easing Covid measures last Monday and currently that means supporters can return to grounds without any restrictions.

Kavanagh said the club will deal with any “variables and curveballs” that come their way but the Lions are planning for “normal operations”.

The Telegraph last week claimed the government would urge sporting venues to adopt Covid certs – proof of vaccination or a negative test – but there has so far been nothing official on that.

Kavanagh said fans can decide if they want to wear masks but that won’t be an enforced measure.

The last time The Den was fully open was for the Championship game against Bristol City on February 29 2020, a week before their last game before the suspension of football.

Kavanagh and a group of his friends completed a charity ride for Prostate

Cancer UK from The Den to AFC Bournemouth last Friday, and he used a cycling analogy as plans for a full reopening continue.

“I ask for the fans to be a little bit patient with us,” Kavanagh told the News. “It is like riding a bike, running a football club, sometimes: when you first get on you’re a little bit wobbly.

We will have teething problems and issues and I need the fans to work with us and certainly not behave the way many of us witnessed at Wembley [before the European Championship final this month].

“We’ve said we’re going to have a reset for the fans. We always knew the importance of fans but at times we’ve built ourselves up because of issues over the years and what we’re going to try and do is reset that and put a level of trust back to the people in a way Boris [Johnson] is with the virus.

“I hope that we can make that irreversible, but I’m not going to make the same commitment Boris has made. Hopefully it is irreversible, but it only takes one idiot to set us back.

“We want the fans to come here, enjoy their time understanding that sometimes we can have complex issues thrown at us.

“There’s talk of Covid passports, like at Wembley. If we have to do that – and we’re not planning on doing that

at this stage – but if that has to come in then we’ll all work together and we’ll need the fans to work with us.

And we’ll deal with it.

“What we want ultimately is fans in the ground enjoying the football and getting behind the team. If that means we have to go an extra few miles to do that then we will do so, but that is going to need the fans to come with us and work with us on that journey as well.

“The EFL have put a statement out and I’m taking it that we’re back to – for the moment – normal operations.

“We will try to make some accommodations, we’re working on those now and we’ll announce those.

At the moment there aren’t Covid certificates to come in, that’s not on the agenda, but it may come in.

“We’ll look at other things we can do to try to make sure there’s as much airflow and all the other standard things. At the moment we’re not being asked to enforce masks so we won’t do that. Obviously if people want to wear masks to feel more comfortable we will find ways to accommodate that.

“But we will work with the boundaries that we’ve all had to work with in the last eighteen months because all I want is to get as many people in the ground. Responsibility is with the individual and we’ll try to

accommodate people as best we can with what they want to do.”

Kavanagh and the administrative staff at the club have had a whirlwind eighteen months since football was put on hold after Covid-19 cases soared in the country.

There was initially doubt over whether the 2020-21 season could resume, before the brief return of fans at a capacity of 2,000 for two games in December and the fall-out following the booing of the ‘Taking the Knee’ gesture.

The summer reopening scheduled for June 21 was then postponed, before this week’s lifting of most restrictions raised hopes that football can return as normal the second weekend of August.

“I’ve got a great team of people here, the staff here have been phenomenal,” Kavanagh said. “Their ability to adapt to what’s in front of them and change and move at rapid pace and be nimble and agile has been critical. Everyone here has done that, we’ve all pulled together as a group of people and that proverbial team.

“It’s enabled us to adapt to what’s going on. Their support has allowed us to manage and handle what’s been thrown at us.

“I think those variables and curveballs are going to keep on coming. I’m sure we’ll adapt to them.”

Neil Harris won promotion to League One and went on to become the club’s all-time top goal-scorer after re-joining from Nottingham Forest in 2007.

Steve Morison and Tony Craig couldn’t resist the lure of SE16 in 2015 – their second and third returns – with the former scoring the winner in the 2017 League One play-off final and the latter lifting the trophy at Wembley.

And though Tim Cahill didn’t have quite the same impact on the pitch when he linked up with the Lions again in January 2018, he certainly added a spark around the changing room and in the stands as Harris’ side went within touching distance of the Championship play-offs.

Those four players were in their 30s and past their peaks when they rejoined, but George Saville arguably has his best days in front of him.

Saville only turned 28 in June and was one of Middlesbrough’s best players last season, their second top-scorer with six goals.

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MATT SMITH made it four goals in three pre-season friendlies as he continued to present a strong case to boss Gary Rowett for inclusion in the starting XI for the first game of the season at his former club QPR.

Smith – who agreed a new one-year deal earlier this summer – scored both goals as Millwall defeated Barnet at their training ground on Calmont Road last Saturday.

Goalkeeper George Long and winger Connor Mahoney were the only players to be given 90 minutes as they were put

through more rigorous tests following limited appearances last season.

The Lions were wearing their new 2021-22 kit and Smith ensured it was a stylish debut with headers in the fifteenth and 40th minutes against Harry Kewell’s side.

Millwall had two early chances when Tyler Burey shot wide before the same player was fouled but Mahoney couldn’t find the target with the free-kick.

The Lions took the lead against the National League side when Smith headed in wing-back Murray Wallace’s cross.

The impressive Mahoney then sent an effort just past the top corner before he

found Mahlon Romeo who couldn’t locate the target.

Mahoney was involved again five minutes before the break as his cross found Smith for the second.

George Saville and Benik Afobe were two of seven changes at the break, the latter heading Danny McNamara’s cross wide in the 65th minute.

Afobe had another half-chance six minutes later after Jed Wallace had stolen possession but the striker was crowded out as he attempted to get his first goal of pre-season.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday, Daniel Ballard scored as the Lions drew 1-1 against Fulham at Calmont Road.

times for Millwall in that 2017-18 season before moving to The Riverside for £8million.

But returning to a former club often doesn’t work out for players, as they can’t match their previous exploits.

Gareth Bale at Tottenham and Andy Carroll at Newcastle are two recent examples, and after leaving those clubs again this summer they’re unlikely to be back.

Returning to your former club was one of the themes of the conversation Gary Rowett had with Saville before signing the player from Boro this summer.

“When I first met Sav I said to him, look, forget the coming back scenario that everyone wants to speculate on, how romantic it is to come back and how lovely it is,” Rowett said.

“I said, in my opinion, in some ways that makes it a harder decision because you don’t want it to be easy. He said, ‘I wouldn’t be coming back to the club if I didn’t feel the club were ambitious. I’ve seen how the club have moved forward in the last few years. I’ve seen the consistency of the group and seen how good the squad is.’

“If it’s just an easy fit when you’re coming back, as a manager that’s an even more difficult question because you don’t want anything to be easy.

“Having sat down with Sav and having spoken to him, as a character it became

pretty clear that his mindset and his mentality is – while he understands the club and really enjoyed being here previously – he’d only consider that if it was right for his career and what he wants to do as a player as well.

“We seemed to be pretty aligned on that.”

Millwall have been linked with moves for attacking midfielders this summer – including Sheffield Wednesday’s Josh Windass – and Saville has been signed to add goals.

But the club are still monitoring the market for more attackers.

Rowett said: “We’ve certainly brought Sav in as an attacking midfielder with his goals record. That doesn’t mean to say we won’t be looking for another attacking player. But what type of player that is I’ll keep to myself.

“We were looking at different positions, we looked at different types of players and we’ve got those players in.

“It’s now can we be patient and see if there’s someone out there who can give us a little bit of something extra if the time is right.

“But of course we know that in order to do that we probably we need one or two to go out in the opposite direction to free some funds up.

“We’re pretty cool with where we are at the moment but there’s certainly no rush to do anything.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk GARY ROWETT doesn’t want to have players who know they won’t get game-time, as Millwall continue to work on trimming their squad to make room for more additions.

Rowett ideally wants a squad of 22 or 23 first-teamers competing for places and the Lions are in contact with agents sounding out potential moves for their fringe players.

Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is available for transfer and would make way for another attacking signing. Bodvarsson has a year left on his current deal.

Millwall know they could also lose Jed Wallace this summer and would have to

react to replace their talisman.

The Lions currently have a squad of 24 players with senior experience, including Tyler Burey, whom the club would like to send on loan to a Football League side.

Rowett is a fan of Manchester City forward Liam Delap, 18, but he has plenty of loan interest from northern-based sides.

The Lions signed five players before their training camp in Scotland, which allows them to be patient before a further reshaping of the squad.

“You don’t want a squad of 26 players of which three or four accept they’re not going to play much. You don’t want to get to that point,” Rowett said.

“So we’ll continue to work hard on the pitch but we’ll also work hard off the pitch to see if we can find solutions all-round.

“From my point of view as a manager

that’s not what I spend much time doing, that’s for [Head of recruitment] Harvey [Bussell] and [CEO] Steve [Kavanagh] and all the agents out there to see if we can piece together deals just like we have done with George Saville, Benik Afobe.

“Those players were in similar positons in that maybe they weren’t going to play as much as they’d like so moved on.

“We’ve got players that are no different.”

Meanwhile, one of the summer signings, Daniel Ballard, scored Millwall’s goal in their 1-1 draw against Fulham on Tuesday when he headed in Scott Malone’s cross.

Rowett is looking for significant goal contributions from his defenders this season.

“Already in pre-season we’ve scored four set-piece goals, it shows the additional threat that we’ve got,” Rowett said.

“Dan can be one that will add to that. He attacks the ball really well, he’s got good size. Any of the centre-halves, they’ve got to chip in when they need to and help the forwards out.

“That’s going to be something that’s important.

“It was a very different game from some of the previous ones. First half we had a strong side out and second half we had to make a few changes, some of the younger players came on. Second half was a little bit better than the first half.

“It was a good addition to the other games.”

Ryan Leonard made his comeback in the game but Jed Wallace missed out through injury and is a doubt for Millwall’s first open-doors friendly next Tuesday at Gillingham.

Lions CEO Steve Kavanagh said owner Berylson has been “devastated” that he hasn’t been able to see his team play since early 2020.

Current plans are for fans to return to football grounds at full capacities this season, and last Monday most restrictions were lifted.

Lions owner Berylson has received both of his Covid-19 vaccinations and is “desperate” to be in SE16 the first weekend of August when the 2021-22 season kicks-off.

Millwall play three times in London in eight days, at QPR in their first league game before they host Portsmouth and Blackburn.

The club have sold over 7,000 season tickets and if Berylson is present he could be welcomed back from Boston by a bumper home crowd.

“John’s been on the phone absolutely every single day,” Kavanagh said. “He’s devastated that he’s not been able to get over here.

“John is double-vaccinated so we’re trying to find ways that we can get him in, he’s desperate to try and be here for the start of the season to see his club.

“He’s missing it like everyone else, he’s had to endure eighteen months of watching it on iFollow.

“But he’s as engaged as ever and really looking forward to the new season and looking forward to trying to be here with the fans to enjoy his club.”
