The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, Thérèse Coffey, has announced that the boost will be ‘phased out’ from this October, a move slammed by Labour politicians, who say it will leave families struggling to put food on the table.

The government has said with reopening the economy its priority has to be getting people back into work.

The decision has received internal Tory opposition, with six former work and pensions secretaries including Iain Duncan Smith writing to chancellor Rishi

According to the latest figures available, around 1,822 households in Southwark are subject to the cap.

GP surgery reopens after campaign to save it

The uplift was introduced in March 2020 as the pandemic took hold and extended to October 2021.

According to research from the Resolution Foundation, the poorest families reliant on the benefit could see five per cent of their income wiped out overnight if the uplift is scrapped as planned.

Southwark and Lambeth assembly member, Marina Ahmad, said: “The pandemic has put huge pressure on the finances of local people, and removing this lifeline will impact the poorest in our borough, the most.

“This extra £20 a week could make all the difference for some families struggling to put food on the table, make their rent or put the heating on in the winter.

“The government shouldn’t be weakening the safety net at a time when we should be driving forward with an economic recovery that works for everyone.

“Universal Credit doesn’t need to be cut.

Brandon Estate’s GP surgery on Maddock Way officially reopened last week after a campaign to save it from closure.

Bermondsey and Old Southwark MP Neil Coyle, who had lobbied to keep it open, was in attendance at the formal ribbon cutting.

In 2019 we reported that Southwark Clinical Commissioning Group had

decided to shut the practice down after the retirement of GP Dr Sinha, believing no providers would bid to take over a comparatively small site and patient list; potentially saving £21,000 a year.

The decision had been taken despite the fact one of the nearest alternative surgeries, run by Nexus, was in special measures at the time, following a Care Quality Commission report. The CCG had argued keeping the site open was no longer financially viable.

Maddock Way had just over 3,000 registered patients and was rated ‘good’ by the watchdog.

At a packed public meeting held at Rachel Leigh Community Hall in December 2019, one heckler had shouted “it’s social cleansing” while representatives from the Clinical Commissioning Group attempted to reassure them, while another said: “Why are they building a new one at Manor Place and not keeping this one open?

“Because they want to build luxury flats and a new medical centre for posh people”.

Following the outcry, Penrose Surgery agreed to take over Maddock Way and, after a full refurbishment, the surgery finally reopened on July 9 with Neil Coyle attending the formal ribbon cutting while a pop-up vaccination clinic also took place.

Coyle praised the campaign to save the practice, saying: “It was absolutely brilliant to re-open the Maddock Way surgery after successfully campaigning with Yvonne, local people, and Labour councillors to keep services at this site when it faced closure last year.

“Keeping the surgery open was a fantastic result and highlights what can be achieved when our community works together.

“After a year and half of restrictions it was also great to see people at my own pop-up ‘advice surgery’ alongside local councillors.

“I have missed face to face contact, so it was wonderful to spend the time catching up with people, celebrating the community success, and picking up issues to raise on their behalf.”

amelia was saved by King's - now family want people to join their hike

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The family of a girl whose life was saved by a liver transplant at King’s are taking part in a seventeen mile hike to raise funds for the hospital.

Amelia Walker was just three-weeks-old in January 2020 when a blood test found she had acute liver failure and needed a transplant to survive.

She was immediately put on the waiting list and admitted to the Rays of Sunshine paediatric liver ward at King’s, while the Walkers anxiously awaited news.

Fortunately, only eleven days later a suitable liver was found and she underwent successful eight-hour transplant surgery. After spending 57 days in hospital she was finally able to ho home.

"Without the world-class care and expertise available at King's, Amelia would never have survived," says her dad, Daniel.

The family plan to take part in the Great Hospital Hike fundraiser for the King’s College Hospital Charity.

The sponsored seventeen mile walk will take them from King’s in Denmark Hill to Bromley’s Princess Royal University Hospital.

"By raising money for King's, we would like to make a small contribution to ensuring that children from across the UK, Europe and further afield can benefit from world-leading liver care at King's," Daniel explains.

"We're doing the Great Hospital Hike as a small way of saying thank you to King's and its staff for the amazing care they gave our newborn daughter."

The walk, taking place on September 18, 2021, follows the Green Chain route through some of southeast London’s beautiful parks and wildlife areas.

Participants can also join a three mile Little Hospital Hike.

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Bermondsey pub is going to host a new local branch of the Royal British Legion, and will hold a launch party this Saturday night, July 17, celebrating the organisation’s hundred-year anniversary.

Sandra Smith, the landlady of the Ancient Foresters on Southwark Park Road, said she wants “to create a bit more of a community round here”. The party on Saturday night will feature food, drink and “old war songs”, she said.

It will also be an opportunity for people to learn about the Royal British Legion and sign up.

The Bermondsey branch of the group, which supports former Armed Forces members, will then hold their monthly meetings at the Ancient Foresters. Sandra also wants to hold events about every three months.

“We want to do something for the older people,” she said. “There aren’t many places for them to go to anymore.

“Before my day there were lots of factories around here. A lot of people around here either worked in Hartley’s Jam, Peek Freans

or Shuttleworth’s next door.. They say ‘we had this, we had that’. They had coach trips. There’s nothing like that now. A lot of old people get cabs here. They don’t want to walk back home.

We want to build up that sense of community more.

“If we can put a couple of evening functions on during the year, and some things during the day that would be great,” she said.

“Some of the pensioners that don’t like coming out of a night, they can come to a legion do of an afternoon and have lunch.”

Sandra said members would thrash out more plans for events at the monthly meetings.

“Someone said we could have Saturday nights as fancy dress. If you get people to dress up it’s a bit of a laugh.

“It’s really good Saturday night anyway - we play all the old songs, some people get up and have a dance, you get others sitting down waving their arms about.”

Anyone can join the Royal British Legion: you don’t have to belong to the forces. Both men and women are welcome. Although Sandra expects the people who sign up to mainly be older, younger people are also welcome to join.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk The 76-year-old father of a NHS doctor on the frontline of the Covid-19 pandemic was conned out of more than £1,000 in Peckham last week by people pretending to be NHS Track and Trace workers.

Sarah Muldoon and her husband were being visited by her parents and sister in their new home in Peckham last week.

She had not seen her family, who live in Scotland, for eighteen months because she could have been exposed to the virus at work and wanted to protect them.

Sarah said she was excited to show her parents her new house and the new neighbourhood, having recently moved from East Dulwich. Her father, a retired Classics and maths teacher whom Sarah described as “very intelligent” but “technologically illiterate”, went out to the Tesco on Rye Lane to buy a newspaper on Friday morning (July 9).

A woman with “an officious manner” came up to him as he left the shop to go home, acting like a Test and Trace worker. She asked him if he had checked in at Tesco. Confused and remembering that in England some Covid-19 rules are different from Scotland, Sarah’s father said that he had not.

The woman ushered him back to the Tesco Bank cash machine outside the supermarket, telling him that he could check in by putting his card into the ATM. Sarah’s father thought the machine had swallowed his card and started to panic.

A man who was acting as if he was in the queue told him to put another card in, which would retrieve the first. He put in the second card, which he thought also disappeared.

In fact the theft happened another way, according to Tesco staff, who

The man standing behind Sarah’s father in the queue read his PIN number and distracted him, which allowed the thief to steal the first card. He then repeated the cruel trick for the second card.

At this point Sarah’s father became very upset and shouted out. The woman and the man immediately fled the scene, Sarah said. He asked the Tesco security guard to open up the machine but the guard said he could not.

Eventually Sarah’s father walked home and asked his family if they thought he had been scammed. They immediately realised that he had been targeted and called up his bank to get his cards cancelled.

But by that point the criminals had swiped a total of £1,300 from both cards, Sarah said. The family is hopeful that the bank will be able to return at least some of the money when it has completed its own investigation.

They reported the incident to the police but said they were disappointed only to have received an automated reply so far.

Sarah said one of the most galling things about the crime was the sacrifice and hard work she had put in as a doctor to help keep people safe during the pandemic, only for her father to be victimised by thieves using Covid-19 as a way to steal.

She added that the incident had shaken her father’s confidence.

“He was much more embarrassed and upset than he wanted to admit. He left to go back to Scotland this morning (Monday July 12).

“But after what happened he wouldn’t go out by himself. He stopped getting the newspaper and got other people to go get it for him.

“He said to me that he felt really sad that people looked at him and thought he looked like a vulnerable person who could be targeted. It’s really shaken his image of himself - he didn’t think of himself as frail.”

Sarah said that she was also disappointed that this is the impression her family now have of the Peckham area.

“I know the reputation that parts of south London can have, particularly Peckham, and it’s a shame because there’s so much to love about the area.

“I feel like I put him in a vulnerable position. I haven’t protected him. The whole visit should have been a nice experience as a family.”

The Tesco Bank cash machine on Rye Lane is not damaged or compromised, a spokesperson said.

They added: “We were really sorry to learn about the customer’s experience.

We are reviewing CCTV footage and will provide our full support to the police with any investigation.

“While Tesco Bank ATMs uphold the highest standards of security and are equipped with industry-standard technology, we encourage all customers to remain vigilant and shield their PIN whenever they use an ATM. If anyone believes they have fallen victim to theft we ask that they contact their bank immediately and report it to the police.”

A spokesperson from the Department of Health & Social Care said: “The actions

of fraudsters trying to exploit elderly and vulnerable people is not only illegal, it is deeply shameful.

“NHS contact tracers will always present their ID and never ask people to provide details of their name, bank or credit card information.

“The only time when NHS personnel will visit you is if you have recently returned to the UK from abroad and are required to isolate. We urge the public to remain vigilant and always ask to

see a person’s ID if this is not produced voluntarily.”

A Met Police spokesman said: “Police received a report of a deception theft that occurred in Rye Lane, SE15 at approximately 09:40hrs on Friday, 9 July.

“A man in his 70s was approached by a woman who led him to a cash machine.

His card was retained by the machine and it was later established a quantity of cash had been taken from the account.

“No arrests; enquiries are ongoing.”

Mr O’Sullivan was originally from Cork in the south of Ireland. He was nicknamed ‘Corky’, although Lucy is not sure if the name refers to his home city.

“He didn’t have much, not even food in the fridge when I went round,” Lucy said about her father.

“But he was always polite to everybody, always happy. He used to bring flowers and chocolates to his neighbour. He just helped everybody.

He was quite popular from what I heard, especially after living there so long.”

He used to work as a gardener and still enjoyed gardening. He also liked singing karaoke with friends and going to pubs in Penge and Forest Hill, Lucy said.

Lucy is now fundraising for her father’s funeral and the wake, which will be held at his favourite pub in Forest Hill. The coffin will be draped in an Irish flag and people are encouraged to wear Irish-themed clothing in a nod to John’s country of birth. Passer-by tells of shock as he tried to revive man who collapsed and died kit@southwarknews.co.uk A passer-by who tried to revive a man who was dying on the pavement in Bermondsey last week has described his longlasting “shock” at the experience.

John O’Sullivan, 73, passed away on the pavement near his home in Kipling Street last Wednesday (July 7). He had lived in Burwash House on the Kipling Estate for about twenty years.

John Nanton was coming home after taking his two children to school and happened to see Mr O’Sullivan as he collapsed, gave him CPR in a bid to keep him alive, called an ambulance and stayed with him until he died.

Paramedics arrived but sadly could not keep John alive.

“I’ve been upset for a few days,” Mr Nanton said. “It was a bit of a wake up call. Someone just popped out and fell over and died. You’re thinking that could have happened to anyone at any time. It’s a strange feeling.” He stayed with the dying man until police told him to go away - which he said made him feel “a bit gutted”.

Primary Schools could be forced to merge St John’s Walworth will not reopen in September - and more are at risk exclusive

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk More school mergers could be on the cards in Southwark, with the council admitting that falling school rolls are a ‘serious issue’ after formally approving the closure of St John’s Primary.

Although the historic Walworth school has been slated for closure for months, the decision was only officially agreed by the council at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting on July 13.

As we reported earlier this year, in March staff and teachers had been informed the school would not reopen after the summer holiday, giving teachers and other school workers scant notice that their jobs were on the line.

At the time, the much-loved primary had 220 places but only 144 were filled, creating a deficit of £350,000 for the next academic year.

A decline in numbers poses a financial headache as government funding is determined on a pupil-by-pupil basis.

Losing pupils increases costs and can lead to an overall decline in standards,

exacerbating the trend as parents turn elsewhere.

St John’s had recently taken on a head described as ‘fantastic’ by staff and parents, who said it could have easily become oversubscribed had the new leadership team been given the chance.

The decision to close was a particularly hard kick in the teeth after working so hard to continue educating children during the trials of the pandemic and home working.

Southwark Council says a fall in birth rate, uncertainty from Brexit and some families returning to the EU, and COVID-19 and the number of people moving out of London are all contributing factors.

Councillor Jasmine Ali, cabinet member for children, young people and schools at Southwark Council said: “This is a London-wide problem, and perhaps exists in other city centres nationally.

“We are fighting hard to ensure that this only has a positive impact on children’s education, and I will be writing to the education secretary to ask for schools to be fairly funded, rather than per capita pupil.

“We are committed to getting fairer funding to allow schools to remain open, because with smaller classrooms, we can see an opportunity within our grasp to turn this into a benefit for the education of our children, but we need the system to change.”

Referencing St John’s, she added: “We actively encourage schools to work together through partnerships, mergers and federations and to open buildings up, where possible, for wider community use.

“But ultimately, with a heavy heart, it looks like we will have to agree that a school will close. “This is never a happy outcome for families who have invested emotionally in their local school.

“However, where schools close, we will find a place for every child in another, excellent local school nearby.”

Local MP Neil Coyle has previously criticised what he described as a ‘jigsaw missing a lot of pieces’, saying there has been confusing and mixed messaging about whether Southwark has too few or too many school places.

It comes after the council’s own £200 million investment in new schools after a previous shortage.

According to this week’s cabinet papers, all 51 pupils at St John’s have now been given places in nearby schools rated good or outstanding by Ofsted. Ninety per cent have stayed in Southwark, with the remainder mainly now being educated in Lambeth.

The cost of closing the school is expected to run to not far off half a million, taking into account redundancies, site security and archiving. A ballpark closure figure, quoted by Tooley Street, is currently £470,000.

Nasra told the News she cares about the environment, which is why she bought the hybrid cars. She said her car can drive 25 miles just on electricity, which means it does not burn any fuel for the vast majority of her journeys, which are to go shopping on the Old Kent Road and to take her children to nursery.

Nasra and her husband now face bills of up to about £5,000 per car from October, if they use them nearly every day. She said they will need to because she would find it too hard to take shopping back on the bus or take her children, who can be unruly, to nursery on public transport.

“What am I going to do? I have no idea, I have to cry. If I have to go on the bus, the children get really sick every

time we go.

“I feel more safe with more children in my car. The peace of mind I get from my child not licking a pole on the bus for example.”

Nasra has asked TfL for help but gets “the same tedious response” every time, she said. An email sent to her husband from the transport agency simply lists the changes again without offering him any advice. She also said she was told at one point to ride a bike instead - despite having two small children to keep safe. She has also asked for help from several local politicians, without any luck.

Now she is calling on TfL to reopen the residents’ discount. “We live here.

Why should I have to pay so much just to do normal, everyday things in my own home?,” Nasra asked.

TfL has been asked for comment on when the residents’ discount is reopening, but gave no response at the time of going to press.

Congestion charge change leaves family having to pay another £5,000 a year per car despite investing in hybrid models

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Northern line extension has reached a major milestone as trial operations start on the new 3km line between Kennington and Battersea Power Station.

The extension, which runs via Nine Elms, is now operating with trial runs every weekend.

It is hoped the extension is on track for an autumn opening, with six peak trains per hour - increasing to twelve per hour by mid-2022.

Over the coming weeks, staff are testing all the new systems and train drivers are also completing training on the new route. Practice exercises, including trial emergency evacuations, will also be completed throughout the summer with around 100 station staff members.

Heidi Alexander, deputy mayor for Transport, said: “The beginning of trial operations on the Northern Line Extension marks a major milestone in the project and it’s really exciting to see

final training and testing taking place.

“When the extension opens this autumn, it will make a real difference to transport links south of the river, supporting thousands of new jobs and homes and boosting London’s recovery.”

Stuart Harvey, TfL’s director of major projects, said: “The start of trial operations on the Northern Line Extension means we are now counting down to opening the first major tube extension this century.

“It’s been a collaborative effort to get to this milestone, and we’ve worked closely with suppliers and stakeholders to make progress on the project, despite the challenge of the pandemic.

“We have been running isolated test trains through the extension since late 2020 but the successful integration of its software and signalling with the rest of the Northern line means the trials to test safety and reliability can start.

“It’s a busy time as we will also be training the drivers and station staff so they are ready to welcome our first customers.”

A family with two young children is facing the prospect of paying thousands of pounds in driving fees every year after falling foul of a change in the congestion charge system.

Nasra Salah and her husband Amar. who live on the New Kent Road near the Elephant and Castle roundabout, bought hybrid cars a few years ago in order to qualify for the cleaner vehicle discount, which was then set to last until 2025. The cleaner vehicle discount gave them 100 per cent off the £15 daily fee.

Another discount that would have applied to them was the 90 per cent residents’ discount, for people who live inside the central London congestion charge zone. But you could only have one discount per account, so they chose the cleaner vehicle waiver.

In 2018 changes were announced that meant plug-in hybrids like Nasra and Amar’s were no longer exempt from October 2021. And applications for residents’ discounts “temporarily” closed from August 2020, meaning Nasra and her husband missed out.

Nearly a year later, it is still unclear when residents’ discounts will reopen for new applications.

By Katherine Johnston katherine@southwarknews.co.uk The Tate Modern and Oval Sports Grounds are holding the next mass vaccination events for south-east Londoners this week.

Anyone over eighteen is eligible to attend to receive a first or second Pfizer dose - as long as the second dose is at least eight weeks after their first at either venue.

The Tate Modern is offering jabs from 5pm to 9pm on Friday, July 16, while the Oval will be open from 8am to 8pm on Saturday, July 17.

Both venues will offer walk-ins but advise

booking a time slot to guarantee a jab.

The clinics at two of south London’s bestknown landmarks follow one of the biggest mass vaccination events held in south-east London, when the Den threw its doors open on July 10 and vaccinated over 1,794 people.

Southwark councillor and cabinet member for health and wellbeing Evelyn Akoto, who volunteered at the vaccine drive last weekend, described it as a ‘brilliant day’. “My highlight has been escorting an 82-year-Nigerian woman and an eager eighteen-year-old to have their first dose,” she said.

Health officials across Southwark and neighbouring boroughs have been ‘pulling out all the stops’ in a race against the highly transmissible Delta variant amid spiralling cases.

Along with mass vaccination events the council is also organising targeted leafleting and door-to-door visits in areas with low take-up rates. This week activity is focused in parts of Nunhead.

Second jabs can now be booked for eight weeks after the first, rather than the initial

twelve, in the hope everyone over eighteen has the maximum protection against COVID-19 by September.

Not only will this help ease pressure on the NHS come winter, but officials are also desperately trying to prevent people from becoming ill as ‘freedom day’ looms next week.

New cases have continued to escalate in Southwark, partly fuelled by the easing of restrictions over recent weeks.

On Monday, health secretary Sajid Javid told MPs that the end of more or less all restrictions was confirmed for July 19; next Monday.

From then on it will only be a recommendation to wear masks on public transport and indoors across the country.

However, this week it was confirmed that masks on London transport will remain compulsory. People will be encouraged to work from home if they can for a while longer. All remaining venues, including nightclubs, are set to reopen.

In parliament, Javid told MPs: "To those who say 'why take this step now' I say 'if not now, when?’”

In the following press conference, Boris Johnson urged caution and said unlocking needed to be taken slowly but that waiting until September posed other risks.

Meanwhile, the government’s chief scientific adviser, Sir Patrick Vallance, said that early figures showed overall that a vaccinated person is around 75 per cent less likely to infect someone else with COVID-19; showing that the vaccine roll out both helps to break the link between infection and deaths, and wider transmission of the virus.

After two doses the protection offered by vaccination against symptomatic disease is at least ninety per cent.

Meanwhile, Professor Chris Whitty, the country’s chief medical officer, warned an ‘exit wave’ of increased cases will happen ‘whenever’ restrictions ease and it was a matter of ‘balancing risks’.

The trio also claimed the NHS was not at risk of being overwhelmed. Last week Javid had said the NHS’ waiting list could hit thirteen million in coming months due to a mix of pressures including people avoiding care during the pandemic, reduced capacity, self-isolating staff, and a rush for treatment post-vaccination.

Cases have continued to grow in Southwark at an alarming rate.

There were 925 confirmed cases in the borough in the week up to July 3, with a seven-day incidence rate of 290 per 100,000 - up by 53 per cent compared with the previous week.

Lambeth had the joint highest incidence rate with Hammersmith and Fulham, at 325 per 100,000.

As of Sunday, July 11, in Southwark 194,820 had received first doses and 119,606 had received second doses.

Rising abuse towards health workers and vaccine volunteers

This week, London Councils, the body representing all London boroughs, said it urged ‘zero tolerance’ for abuse amid growing reports of hostility.

Verbal and physical attacks are coming from Londoners frustrated by the eightweek vaccine wait and ongoing social distancing and other COVID-19 safety measures, including testing.

Georgia Gould, chair of London Councils, said: “We are now reaching an important point in the battle against the pandemic.

“The vast majority of Londoners have been respectful and patient with the capital’s boroughs and NHS frontline staff as they work to help keep London safe.

“Unfortunately, some people are losing their patience and feel it is okay to be rude, abusive and sometimes violent to these hard-working heroes who have worked ceaselessly for the last sixteen months.

“Services will slowly return to some kind of normality, but testing and vaccinations are essential to establishing a route out of the pandemic.

“Even if you have a complaint or difference of opinion, please be respectful to people who have made caring for Londoners their priority throughout this public health crisis.

“The last year has been incredibly difficult for so many Londoners but we are a city that looks out for each other and we must keep this spirit alive, especially in this final push.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan said frontline workers and volunteers were ‘heroes’ who must be shown respect.

He and Medical Director for the NHS in London, Dr Vin Diwakar, urged Londoners to ensure they either prebooked or checked walk-in vaccination clinics’ opening hours before travelling and queuing for jabs. It is also important to check eligibility criteria to ensure the right jabs are offered for their age group.

Dr Diwaker added: “Most Londoners have shown immense gratitude to those who’ve protected us throughout this pandemic, but sadly there are growing reports of abuse and aggression towards NHS teams.

“We take a zero-tolerance approach to all forms of abuse, and we know the public stands with us in supporting our incredible staff and volunteers as they work tirelessly to get London vaccinated and back to doing the things we love.”

Oxford University and AstraZeneca are looking for about 1,865 volunteers from across the UK, South Africa, Brazil and Poland to try a new booster vaccine based on their previous effort, with changes that researchers hope will make it more effective against the South African (Beta) variant.

Some 800 of these volunteers will take part at King’s College London and Guy’s and St Thomas’s in south London.

Volunteers can only apply if they have had a double dose of AstraZeneca, Pfizer or Moderna, with their last vaccine at least

Pfizer is also developing a booster shot for its own vaccine that it hopes will be more effective against the South African variant.

The South African variant first appeared in the UK earlier this year. It is more infectious than the earlier version of the disease that first spread in the country.

The dominant strain of Covid-19 in the UK is the Delta - or Indian - variant.

Guy’s Doctor leads way on covid treatment

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk A Guy’s hospital doctor was the leader of a new study that has changed the World Health Organisation’s approach to treating people who are seriously ill with Covid-19.

Professor Manu Shankar-Hari authored the study that showed that a drug that is used to calm overreactive immune systems is also very effective at treating critical coronavirus cases.

the body in serious cases. The study showed that a drug which blocks an immune molecule called interleukin-6 was effective in treating the disease, alongside corticosteroids.

These have been used in severe Covid cases by the NHS since November last year.

The study covered 10,930 patients, of whom 6,449 randomly received the immune blockers. The other 4,481 received usual care or placebo.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has changed its recommendations for how to treat people with serious or critical Covid-19 cases based on Professor Shankar-Hari’s findings.

The critical care consultant said: “Covid-19 is a serious illness. Our research shows that interleukin-6 antagonists reduce deaths from Covid-19 and prevent progression to severe illness needing breathing support with a ventilator.

“Interleukin-6 antagonists appear even more effective when

used alongside corticosteroids.

Our research findings reflect the incredible research effort from scientists worldwide since the start of the pandemic. On a personal note, I am grateful to the patients and their families for their willingness to participate in research during these challenging times.”

Dr Janet Diaz, lead for clinical management, WHO Health Emergencies, said: “Bringing together the results of trials conducted around the world is one of the best ways to find treatments that will help more people survive Covid-19. We have updated our clinical care treatment guidance to reflect this latest development.

“While science has delivered, we must now turn our attention to access. Given the extent of global vaccine inequity, people in the lowest income countries will be the ones most at risk of severe and critical Covid-19. Those are the people these drugs need to reach.”

One in five suffering from 'Covid anxiety syndrome'

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk One in five are suffering from ‘COVID-19 anxiety syndrome’, according to new research from London South Bank University.

This could mean a significant proportion of people will struggle to reintegrate back into daily life when the majority of restrictions end on July 19, and will need extra mental health support.

A UK-wide survey of 975 people, conducted in late June, found that 40 per cent strongly avoided touching things in public spaces due to fear of the virus; a third avoided public transport; 23 per cent avoided public places; a quarter paid close attention to others displaying possible symptoms, and one in five scored highly on an anxiety scale about COVID-19.

Unsurprisingly, those who had lost a family member due to Covid-19 were more likely to be anxious about returning to normal life.

However, age, gender and vaccination status were not found to be predictors

of anxiety levels.

The concept of COVID-19 anxiety syndrome was first coined by Professor Marcantonio Spada, from LSBU’s

Centre for Addictive Behaviours, and Professor Ana Nikevic from Kingston University, in April 2020.

Their research found that people

were developing a particular set of behaviours as a result of their fear of the virus, and they conducted the current study in collaboration with

Professor Ian Albery from LSBU’s Centre for Addictive Behaviours Research.

Covid-19 anxiety syndrome consists of forms of coping such as a constant attention to threat, worry, avoidance and excessive checking, that can keep people locked into a state of continuous anxiety and fear of contracting the virus.

Marcantonio Spada, Professor of Addictive Behaviours and Mental Health at LSBU, said: “Our data indicates that after one month of reopening of society many people are still struggling with aspects of COVID-19 anxiety syndrome, a similar figure to what we previously observed during full lockdown.

“This means that there are still many people who find it difficult to disengage from the COVID-19 threats which may make return to normal daily living harder as restrictions ease.

“Our new findings show how vital it is that people affected by COVID-19 anxiety syndrome receive support.

“Mapping out how we will do this will become a priority for mental health service providers.”

Potesters occupy Camberwell’s former Police Station exclusive

Camberwell’s former police station was taken over by squatters last week in protest at the ‘draconian’ new police, crime, sentencing and courts bill.

A statement taped to the front door on behalf of a group called ‘The Serious Annoyance’ said they had occupied the empty Camberwell Church Street building in its fight to ‘kill the bill’ and highlight the ‘destructive’ role of the police.

“We know the cops don’t protect us – their resources aren’t focused on catching so-called “criminals”, but on protecting the wealth and power of the capitalist class,” the group said, adding “we do not and we will not accept increased police powers which effectively ban protest and criminalise trespass, something which amounts to the ethnic cleansing of the Gypsy Roma and Travelling community in the UK by making a travelling life impossible.

“Despite the increasingly violent and extreme attacks from the state against those of us who resist the growing police state, from the brutal eviction of the Clapham NotACopShop to the harassment of our comrades in Bristol and the vicious prison sentences being proposed for the brave militants allegedly involved in the Bristol Riots, we will continue to fight against the Bill and its criminalisation of trespass and our democratic rights.”

The building has been adorned with protest banners calling for ‘squatters and travellers to unite and fight’, and arguing that ‘all evictions are state violence’.

Thousands have joined ‘kill the bill’ protests across the country and opposition to the sweeping legislation has come from across the political spectrum, with former Labour home secretary David

Blunkett warning the new powers would turn the UK into a country more akin to ‘Putin’s Russia’ and create a ‘lasting and toxic’ legacy.

Along with huge changes to sentencing, the bill would give police extra powers to

curb peaceful protests.

One resident, who lives near the building, said there was a ‘strong smell of rubbish, human waste and weed’ coming from the building.

Now privately owned after being sold

off, it had been monitored by a security team who appear to have been easily evaded by the group. The building was decommissioned in 2019 after budget cuts and soon after a restructure that merged Southwark and Lambeth policing

teams into a new ‘Basic Command Unit’.

Although its front counter had been closed since 2013, the building had been still used as a base by officers and for drop-in community policing events and outreach work.

Neighbourhood inspector Tom Cornish told the News: “Local police are aware of squatters in the former Camberwell Police Station and have visited the site recently. The building no longer belongs to the Metropolitan Police Service and the current private sector owners are taking the necessary legal action to eject those who are occupying the building.

“The local policing team is responding to reports of an increase in antisocial behaviour in the surrounding area which is claimed to be linked to the occupation of the building. New knife crime prevention orders trialled across London to give police more powers

katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Controversial new ‘knife crime prevention orders’ are now being trialled by the Met, which insists the legislation is a ‘preventative’ and not ‘punitive’ approach.

The orders, known as KCPOs, are a new civil order that can be imposed on anyone aged twelve and up who is a regular knife carrier or has been given a knife-related sentence.

The Met says the orders are intended to help police and other agencies to intervene earlier and divert at-risk young people away from crime.

The orders can prevent individuals from associating with certain people,

ban them from specific areas and impose curfews. They may also be required to undertake training and skills programmes including drug rehabilitation or anger management.

Their use of social media could also be limited.

Those who do not comply could face criminal charges with a maximum prison sentence of two years.

The trial will last fourteen months and, if evaluated as successful, the orders could be rolled out across the UK by the Home Office.

Although welcomed by some campaigners, the orders have also received criticism over fears of racial profiling and further criminalising young children caught up in exploitation.

Thirty-one organisations wrote an open letter to the Home Office in 2019 calling the scheme ‘flawed and disproportionate’.

Pastor Lorraine Jones, campaigner and founder of Brixton’s Dwaynamics Boxing Gym, has thrown her support behind the new legislation. Her son, Dwayne, was stabbed to death in 2014.

She said: “These orders are just what we need and are vitally important for us in the community as we have a number of young people who carry knives for various reasons in fear.

“They will give us greater opportunity to work with young people and potentially divert them from prison, as they too are vulnerable at a tender age and at risk of being

killed or using that knife to take a life.

Home secretary Priti Patel said: “One of the hardest parts of my job as Home Secretary is seeing families ripped apart by the horror of knife crime and I am determined to stop this misery, protect communities and help save lives.

“Knife Crime Prevention Orders will crack down on those carrying weapons while at the same time intervening to steer them away from a life of violence.

“Police have asked for these orders to help them keep our streets and young people safe, and I will always do everything in my power to ensure they have the tools and powers to cut crime and protect the public.”

Two come to the rescue of man knocked out by e-scooter after final exclusive

The man, whom witnesses named as David, was found by local resident Allison Robertshaw lying passed out and bleeding on the pavement on Teredo Road by the Pizza Hut, as she made her way home from the Yellow House, where she had been watching England’s defeat to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

“He was just lying there in the open,” she said. “I can’t believe no one else had seen him or was helping him.”

Allison immediately called an ambulance but needing more help with the victim, she asked if any of the passengers on a bus that stopped nearby had medical knowledge.

the bus, had done first aid training years before. He was on his way to Euston to catch the last train home to Berkhamsted. Missing the train could have been an inconvenient and costly problem for him, but he saw that David needed help so got off the bus.

Paul said: “It was the first time I’d done something like this but no one seemed to jump up and help. Although I did have to get my train home, if someone asks for help, if you can you should. I just got off to see if there was anything I could do.”

He found David lying on the pavement slipping in and out of consciousness and bleeding from the mouth.

“I put him in a recovery position, supported his neck, shook him, talked to him, got him to come round a bit. His leg was hurting. He was in a bit of pain and shock too.

“I was trying to make sure he was conscious, and then get him conscious again when he was passing out.” When he was conscious David told Paul that an e-scooter had raced along the pavement and knocked him over.

“And again, we are a family of three, not rabid fans, we were just sitting in the bus.”

She said her son was left worried for any Italians ahead of the final.

“He doesn't quite understand why

“I think he is right to be worried, and I don't understand either. But at any rate, we thought going to see Denmark play at Wembley was safe and we were obviously wrong.”

Her post has received nearly a hundred replies from appalled neighbours sharing their support for the family.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson confirmed the incident was being investigated.

“Officers are investigating an allegation of assault that is said to have occurred in Lordship Lane, East Dulwich on Wednesday, 7 July at around 23:50hrs.

Transport for London have been contacted for comment.

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Two good Samaritans stopped to help an epileptic man after he was allegedly knocked unconscious by a speeding e-scooter on the pavement in Rotherhithe on Sunday night, needing medical treatment.

David, who is epileptic, also suffered what Paul described as a minor seizure, rolling over and stiffening up before recovering again.

All the while Alison was on the phone with the ambulance, which she said arrived between twenty minutes and half an hour after she made the call. “But that’s not surprising considering the cluster f*ck that was last night,” she said, referring to the violence and disorder in London before and after the football match.

After the ambulance arrived paramedics treated David and decided he did not need hospital treatment.

But Paul still needed to find his way home. He had missed the last bus so got an expensive Uber to Euston, eventually making the last train home.

Asked if he had learned anything from the incident, Paul said: “I think it reinforced in me, if someone asks for help, help. If you don’t think you know what to do, you probably know more than you think, so just help.

“I did a first aid course years ago, but I never really needed it until now... But

you don’t even need too much training, it was literally just keeping him company and keeping him awake.”

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: "We were called at 11.01pm yesterday (11 July) to reports of a collision involving an electric scooter and a pedestrian on Teredo Street, SE16.

"We sent an ambulance crew, who treated a man at the scene but did not take him to hospital."

Police said they had no record of the incident.

The alleged collision comes a week after Southwark joined a Transport for London (TfL) trial that means people riding TfL scooters are officially allowed to go through the borough on roads, cycle lanes and cycle paths. You cannot hire e-scooters in the borough.

Despite what appears to be widespread usage of private e-scooters on public land, they are only supposed to be used on private property.

E-scooters are not allowed to be ridden on the pavement, although this is also a common sight.

Danish familiy attacked by a football mob in East Dulwich

After seeing the two parents and their nine-year-old son on the 176 on the night of July 7, the hostile crowd surrounded the bus and started banging on its windows and doors and hurling threatening abuse.

Eva Hoier Greene posted about the horrific experience on neighbourhood safety and networking website NextDoor to warn other non-England supporters to be careful in the run up to Sunday’s final against Italy.

outrage over racist abuse after euro final Vile comments were directed at three of our players, including Camberwell’s very own Jadon Sancho

By Katherine Johnston & Kit Heren katherine@southwarknews.co.uk Camberwell man Jadon Sancho was one of three England players who suffered “unforgivable” racial abuse after missing a penalty in the Euro 2020 final shootout.

Sancho, 21, was born in Camberwell to Trinidadian parents but moved to nearby Kennington at a young age. He played football with friends in Kennington Park, honing his close control skills from an early age before joining Watford’s academy as a seven-year-old.

Sancho was later signed by Manchester City, becoming one of the brightest stars in its youth setup before moving to German side Borussia Dortmund aged just seventeen, in what was then considered a controversial transfer away from one of England’s top clubs. He has since become a huge star and has played for England more than twenty times already.

The wide forward only made three appearances at Euro 2020, two of them as substitutes. His last came in the final minute of extra time against Italy, when manager Gareth Southgate knew the game would be decided by a penalty shootout.

Sancho missed England’s fourth penalty, leaving the score at 3-2. Marcus Rashford had already missed and Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma’s save of Bukayo Saka’s strike confirmed England’s defeat.

Sancho, Rashford and Saka were all subjected to racist abuse after their

misses, repeating a sadly predictable cycle for black players on social media in recent years. Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Home Secretary Priti Patel, England manager Gareth Southgate and the Football Association all came out strongly to condemn the abuse, which Southgate labelled "unforgivable". The Met Police said it was investigating.

Southwark’s politicians also threw their support behind the trio. Helen Hayes said comments made by Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke that Rashford “should have spent more time perfecting his game than playing politics’, were ‘disgraceful’.

Elphicke had been referencing Rashford’s school means campaign to feed children during the holidays, which had forced a government U-turn. The Tory MP later apologised for her 'rash reaction'.

The Dulwich and West Norwood MP said: “Marcus Rashford used the platform his huge talent affords him to deliver transformative change for our country’s most vulnerable children.

“He has more compassion, ethics and leadership in his little finger than this disgraceful Tory MP. Nothing but pride for you.”

She added: “There is no place for racism in football. “The hate on social media demonstrates why our brilliant England team are absolutely right and brave to take a stand against racism at the start of each game and why they need our solidarity now.”

Bermondsey and Old Southwark’s MP, Neil Coyle, joined the debate over Patel’s comments that she was ‘disgusted’ with the racist abuse levelled at the players.

He retweeted a comment from central defender Tyrone Mings arguing “you don’t get to stoke the fire at the beginning of the tournament by labelling our antiracism message as ‘gesture politics’ and then pretend to be disgusted when the very thing we’re campaigning against, happens.”

Coyle simply added his own take: “There is only one side of heroes in this argument.”

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan said there must be ‘zero tolerance’ of racist abuse in football and anywhere else, and that “the abhorrent racism we've seen following the Euros final illustrates perfectly why England’s players continue to take the knee.”

He has called on social media companies to take action and for those responsible to face the full force of the law.

At the time of writing, more than 850,000 people had signed a petition calling for lifetime football match bans for racists.

Set up by Shaista, Amna, Huda, known as ‘the three hijabis’, the petition said: “As multi-racial football fans, we finally feel represented by this anti-racist and inclusive England team.

“We could not be more proud or inspired by our magnificent team and by their talent, bravery, leadership and love for all.

“Gareth Southgate’s England team plays for all of us. Their vision is an inclusive vision and this matters more than ever - it’s why we feel proud of this team and why they’re so cherished and loved by many of us.

“There should be no room for racists and bigotry in football or society.

“We are calling for the Football Association and the government to work together now to ban all those who have carried out racist abuse, online or offline, from all football matches in England for life. Our England team stood up for all of us - now we must stand up for them.”

Despite the setback and the awful abuse he has suffered, Sancho should have the last laugh and has a bright future ahead for club and country. He is in the final stages of a move to Manchester United for a reported £73m, with the Old Trafford club set to announce his arrival later this week.

Compass penalty shootout raised £1,200 for charity

man invites delivery driver in to watch the euro semi final

Radio presenter Rich Wolfenden, originally from Liverpool but now living in Lucey Way, planned to watch England's game against Denmark last Wednesday, July 7, at the Gregorian pub on Jamaica Road.

But the pub was too full, with barely even any standing room, so he decided to watch the match at home with his housemate and his cousin.

They ordered in Chinese food - and

their delivery driver arrived just after Denmark's own goal, scored under pressure from Raheem Sterling, which levelled the scores at 1-1.

"He arrived when we were midcelebration." said Rich, who presents an indie music show on Radio X on Fridays and Saturdays. "We were on a bit of a high. We asked him if he wanted to come in and watch.

"He said yes, put his bag down and sat on the seat watching with us for about ten minutes.

"We only talked a little bit. He's only just moved to this country so his English wasn't great. He was a Man U fan."

England beat Denmark 2-1 after extra time to progress to the final, where they lost to Italy.

In a move that perhaps tempted fate a little too much before England crashed out to Italy, children at Compass School on Drummond Road competed in a penalty shootout, following a £1,200 fundraiser for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Godsfavour from Year 8 won the shootout. He said: “I’m over the moon!

The pressure was on in that last round so I went for power.”

Losing finalist Sam, also from Year 8, said: “I’m sick as a parrot to come so close and lose with the last shot.”

Gareth Southgate's men lost to Italy on penalties on Sunday after a 1-1 draw.

Despite succumbing to penalty heartbreak once again, the Three Lions were widely acclaimed for even getting to the final something no England team has done since 1996. The team also garnered praise for their professionalism and willingness to discuss important social issues like poverty, racism and homophobia.

Car flips on its roof near Old Kent Road

Police cordoned off the scene after the road traffic collision, which took place at around 11.15 in Trafalgar Avenue in Peckham.

Two ambulance crews and other medical staff rushed to the scene, with the first crew arriving within minutes of the accident.

Police said no arrests were made.

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 11.12am this morning (10 July) to reports of a road traffic collision in Trafalgar Avenue, Peckham.

“We sent two ambulance crews, an advanced paramedic, two medics in fast response cars and an incident response officer to the scene. The first paramedic arrived in less than six minutes.

“At the scene, we treated a woman for an arm injury and a child for neck pain and took both patients to hospital.”

kit@southwarknews.co.uk A new mural has been painted in South Bermondsey commemorating 140 years of stone work in the area.

Well-known local street artist Lionel Stanhope, who has painted several murals across south-east London, made this latest artwork for Diespeker & Co on Penarth Street at the end of June.

Family-run business Diespeker is celebrating 140 years as a supplier of stone products like marble and granite.

The new mural, which is thirteen metres wide and five and a half metres tall, shows scenes from the company’s history. These include marble quarries in Italy, transportation lorries and the original headquarters in Islington. Part of the design was based on a photo from 1932.

Lionel and his assistant spray-painted the mural over the course of four days.

He said he was happy with the way the different elements in the picture work together.

“I think the design is really balanced so it works well in this space, and it has been really satisfying doing something on this big scale.”

Diespeker’s managing director John Krause is also shown riding his bike to work across Tower Bridge. John, whose father ran the business before him, said: “We’re really proud of our heritage as a business, and the mural describes it perfectly. It's the story behind our 140 years that Lionel has captured so well, our roots in London and the original Diespeker signage skilfully incorporated into the new design.

“For me, the mural really brings the whole thing full circle from early beginnings to where we are now. It feels very special to have our own memorable and permanent physical representation of Diespeker's presence in south London.”

Lionel, who has worked on sets for the TV show Black Mirror and Hollywood films, painted a mural for Millwall fans on Zampa Road last year after Network Rail covered over an iconic painting of Neil Harris, thinking it was graffiti.

Bermondsey’s Litterati call for more rubbish education

By Kit Heren kit@southwarknews.co.uk Members of a popular Bermondsey litter-picking group have called for more education about littering in schools after collecting piles of rubbish from the streets several times a week.

The group, who call themselves the Litterati, go out in small groups around the area to pick up litter left on the pavement.

Outings are organised informally on the Nextdoor neighbourhood app.

Roger Mallet, one of the group’s founders, said: “It’s an issue that relates to general society and social wellbeing.

We generally feel that it’s society to blame rather than anything else. I think the council do enough, and it’s a fantastic job that they do.

“It’s frustrating though when we tidy something up and you come back later and find the same place covered in rubbish.

“You wouldn’t go sit in the park, and have a picnic if it was full of rubbish and litter.

So why leave it like that? The mentality of that is strange to me. You walk through Burgess Park after a nice weekend and it’s disgusting. The psychology of that is something that needs to be looked at.”

“I think it’s something that can be tackled in the area of education. We need people to be told about this in schools.”

Southwark Council runs a ‘recycling discovery centre’ where any school in the borough can take children to learn about how to manage rubbish responsibly.

Mr Mallet said the Litterati have received a positive response from locals who see them out doing their work. Some people passing by have given them bottles of beer.

The council has also donated five litterpicking sticks to the group.

Another group member Gerald Hussein said he takes part because “rather than rage about it, I can do something.”

“It’s very satisfying - there’s something hunter-gatherer about it. And the outcome is clean streets, temporarily at least.

“Street cleaners generally seem to be quite happy that some people are taking care and attention, and are quite helpful generally. Maybe perked up their work a little bit.”

Mr Hussein said some of the areas around Millwall stadium the Den can be the worst for littering, in his experience.

“I couldn’t believe how much litter there was - so much sh*t about. I’m dreading to go back there, thinking about how much work there is! It’s often

The river is much colder than summer air temperatures and the tides and current are strong and quick - too

On average the MPU is called to over twenty incidents a week on the Thames.

Inspector Stuart Simpson of the MPU said: “Whilst the weather has been wet and rainy of late, we anticipate that, hopefully, warmer weather will come and people often see the river as a place

particular pockets where it accumulates, and the more it accumulates there’s less conscientiousness I think.

On the other hand, the cleaner the place is, the longer the rubbish takes to accumulate. I would say the majority of people are a little bit lazy but not too bad - if something looks clean and tidy they won’t just throw their rubbish down.”

Mr Hussein added that he thinks there is an important societal function for keeping streets clean, more broader than just public hygiene. to cool off. And although London will be hot, the river runs at an average of 12C. Cold water shock can occur at any temperature under 15C. “I urge the public to not underestimate the river. Once a person is in the water they will almost definitely struggle to keep afloat or in control; the Thames holds currents stronger than any person, moves at extreme speeds and is capable carrying a person swiftly along the river. The water may look calm but the tides are extremely strong and quick, and can easily drag someone a mile in just ten minutes.

“Think before you act, consider the dangers and please do not jump in the water, however good a swimmer you are.

“For some people their natural instinct will be to try and save someone in trouble but as soon as you enter the water you will be putting your life at danger too.

“Please do not enter the water yourself and instead dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Officers and our partners are highly trained and able

“What tends to happen is there will be a problem or some crime and so people will feel they are less safe. Then they leave the streets to the five per cent of people that cause trouble. They retreat and get angry and shake their sticks from the window.

Ark Globe Academy’s students achieved fantastic results at English Schools' Athletic Association’s Track and Field Cup in June.

Both junior (years 7-8) and inter (years 9-10) boys’ athletics teams became London and regional champions on June 26, with the juniors placed fifth in the country.

The girls’ teams also excelled really well too. The juniors came second in London with the inters coming third.

Athletes from years 7-9 faced particular challenges over the last year with lockdown, training put on hold and fewer opportunities due to being placed in group ‘bubbles’ to keep as safe as possible from

COVID-19.

Investment in Ark Globe’s new long jump pitch has also paid off. After only training for four months one year 9 Rueben finished third in the London Schools Pentathlon (long jump, hurdles, high jump, shot put and 800m) and has now been selected to represent London Schools in the National finals.

Reuben also competed at the London schools track and field championships and became London schools champion.

Ark Globe executive principal Mr Jones said: “I am immensely proud of our young athlete’s achievements at English Schools Athletics Competition.

“At Ark Globe we understand the huge benefits of sport for the physical and mental well-being of our students, particularly after a difficult eighteen months for the community.

“The way they conducted themselves both on and off the track on the day was exemplary and their successes are a direct result of hard work and commitment to their area of specialism.”

Alisha from year 9 said: “I competed in 100 m run and discus. I was very excited. I am proud of what I did but I know I could do better. I will definitely continue doing athletics and achieve better next year.

“I love athletics. I started running when

I was in primary and kept practicing in secondary too.

“Every week, I train twice in the morning and twice after school with the team.

“I think our team is amazing. We even encourage the other schools’ athletes during the championships. I think it is good sportsmanship.

“My family is very proud too. They wanted to come to the championship but they couldn’t because of COVID-19.”

Fellow student Abdulai, also from year 9, said: “I am most proud of my 1500m run because I completed it in five minutes – better than my target. I came second in that run.

“I am part of the elite player programme at Globe and we train in the mornings.

“My teachers help me a lot. I am more concentrated on football, but will continue running all through secondary school. I want to become a footballer in the future.

“Our school team is very friendly. All of my friends supported me to bring back my confidence.

“I exceeded my target, because of the support from my team and my teachers, especially Mr Bonnett.

“When I told my mum the results, she was very happy. She told me that she was a top athlete back in Africa when she was a student. So it is very special for her. She is proud of me.”

Assistant principal and head of sport, Mr Bonnett said: “This is an amazing achievement for our students in difficult circumstances.

“Because of COVID-19, they were only able to train in year groups and therefore had limited training sessions.

Children, parents and staff from Sydenham High School ran more than 1,500 kilometres in a single day to raise over £3,000 for their local hospice last month.

The students and teachers battled the wind and rain on the school astroturf on June 18 to reach the incredible total for St Christopher's Hospice in Sydenham. Children of all ages took part throughout the day, from Reception up to year 12.

ran ten kilometres on her own before starting her own work day.

The day's last push saw Year 10, staff and parents all running together. The school finished with 1505 kilometres in total.

The money raised went towards moving and handling equipment for hospice patients.

a huge thank you to the staff and pupils at Sydenham High School for raising more than £3,000 through their 1,000km in a day challenge.

“The important thing to note is that none of the students are club athletes.

“We will be now working in developing links with clubs to support the students to go on as individual athletes and compete in junior olympics or represent England in athletics.

Restorative Justice For All (RJ4ALL), based on Plough Way, wants to get a minimum of 200 women and girls above the age of sixteen to sign up for weekly pilates and Zumba classes over the next year.

RJ4ALL says its classes are for women who have “social, economic, and/or cultural barriers” to attending a fitness class or going to a gym. The charity is calling the new project ‘Women’s Hearts: Active & United’.

The charity said that Muslim women were especially likely to be missing out on exercise. Research by creative agency Mud Orange found that before the Covid-19 pandemic 86 per cent of Muslim women would prefer to use women-only gyms and this often meant they exercised less.

Dr Theo Gavrielides, who runs

the charity, said: “We are delighted to be offering free sports and empowerment classes to women especially during these difficult times.

“The Women’s Hearts: Active & United project is well embedded in our culture and hope that it will attract enough supporters to see it running for many years.”

Funding for the project comes from This Girl Can, a Sport Englandbacked fund to promote active lifestyles among women and girls.

Classes will be run by Olga Ribaka, a fitness instructor who has been teaching fitness and dance for nearly twenty years.

Ms Ribaka added: “Waking up in the morning, getting to the gym and prioritising your fitness isn’t easy— we all know it! But staying on track and working toward your health goals is essential.

“For those days when you need some extra motivation, join our free online classes no matter where you are”.

A man has been revived at King's College hospital in a 'miracle' procedure after his heart stopped for three hours.

Bright Horizons Peckham Rye Day Nursery and Preschool was among a few centres that tested the new curriculum before it was rolled out to 300 other nurseries across the country.

The curriculum encourages children to play freely with everyday items, to enable them to develop creativity, solve problems and make connections in their learning.

Children are also provided to develop through art by using big paint brushes, paint rollers and floor brooms or mops on a large canvas.

This helps strengthen the muscles in a child’s shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, in preparation for writing.

Speaking from his hospital bed, Mr Curtis said: “The care I’ve had pre-hospital and at King’s has been phenomenal. The fact that I’m here today is testament to the skill and dedication of everyone who cared for me.”

Mr Curtis, an experienced endurance athlete who has taken part in triathlons, iron man events and ultramarathons, is unsure about whether he will return to the water. “I’ve been given a second chance so I have to think carefully about whether I’ll kayak again,” he added.

Mr Curtis's partner Christine Cordle, a community nurse, said: “It’s a miracle Paul is with us today. If just one link in Paul’s chain of survival – which included his friend who first administered CPR, the paramedics, air ambulance, A&E and critical care unit at King’s – had broken he wouldn’t be with us now.”

Dr Georg Auzinger, consultant in critical care and director of the ECMO service, said: “Normal body

temperature is around 36 to 37 degrees but Paul’s dropped down to just 23 degrees, causing his heart to stop beating in a rhythm that could sustain life. Although he had no cardiac output for more than three hours, thankfully, Paul received the necessary first aid both at the scene and on his way to King’s to ensure his brain was not starved of oxygen. Once at King’s we used extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) to supply Paul’s vital organs, and especially his brain, with oxygen and warm the blood.

“ECMO is a type of long-term artificial heart-lung machine, which pumps blood around the body, adding oxygen and removing carbon dioxide, just like the heart and lungs would do.

The machine rewarms the blood and returns it to the body, and this enabled us to shock Paul’s heart back into a normal rhythm.”

King's is one of a few medical centres in the UK that have an ECMO. The hospital has supported about 150 patients since getting the machine in 2012.

Local charity the Food Education Trust donated £10,000 for a blue shipping container to house the new food bank.

Kelly hosted a launch event on Thursday July 8 to thank the people who helped set up the new food hub.

It opened again for people to collect food on Friday. The food bank is now only running one food collection day per week but Kelly is looking to open on a second day soon. This is a side job for Kelly, whose main work is as a Royal Mail collections driver in

Walworth.

The food hub currently only accepts donations of long-life food and other non-perishable goods like toiletries, but Kelly wants to expand to fresh food too.

“I want it to be a place where people can come and get nutritious food,” she said. “Getting recipe cards in, where people can maybe get more of an idea of how to feed themselves well would be good too.”

Lions food hub moves nearer the den

Peckham nursery pioneers new ways of teaching A Peckham nursery is pioneering a new teaching method for pre-school children that emphasises children’s emotional wellbeing.

Paul Curtis was kayaking in Maidstone in Kent in April when he fell in, getting trapped in ice-cold water for around five minutes and suffering hypothermia.

Mr Curtis, 50, managed to get out of the water but then collapsed as his heart had stopped pumping blood. His body temperature was at just 23 C down from the usual 36-37 C. A friend called an ambulance and performed CPR until paramedics arrived.

But the medics were unable to shock his heart into rhythm as his temperature was so low. With time of the essence, Mr Curtis was taken by air ambulance to King's in Denmark Hill. While in the air he was kept alive with a mechanical chest compression system.

When they got to King's, his body was warmed up by an extracorporeal membrane oxygenation machine (ECMO) - which acts as the lungs and

A Bermondsey food bank has relaunched after moving from a local tenants’ and residents’ association hall to the Millwall community trust car park.

The Lions Food Hub, run by Lionesses goalkeeper Kelly Webster along with the Millwall Supporters Trust, had been running from the Manor and Rennie Estates’ TRA hall on Galleywall Road from January but the space will now be hired out now that Covid restrictions are set to be lifted from this Monday, July 19.

A new study carried out by staff at Guy’s and St Thomas’s has shown that cancer patients are more likely to speak up about their health concerns when contacted online or by text compared to in-person or phone discussions.

About 650 people took part in the study online soon after getting a cancer diagnosis. They were twice as likely to report concerns than people who were contacted via other methods. Before Covid-19 the survey

was usually done over the phone or in person.

More people speaking up online could be because they had more time to think, or they felt it was easier to be more honest, staff said.

Nikki Cannon, a senior member of the Guy’s cancer team who led the study, said: “Delivering personalised care is really important – we need to know what support patients most need after their cancer diagnosis. This is done by a holistic needs assessment.

“When we first introduced the

assessment by text, we realised patients were flagging more concerns about their health than those who had in-person assessments. It could be those patients have more time at home to reflect on their answers, and they feel they can be more honest than if they are in a clinic. By continuing to focus on what our patients tell us we are better able to evolve our practice and work with partners to meet those needs.

“The text assessments have been a really useful additional tool for us to

support patients, in addition to faceto-face, and it’s something we will continue to offer our patients.”

Clare Johnson was treated at Guy’s Cancer for breast cancer. The 56-year-old, from Beckenham in Kent, completed her questionnaire online.

She said: “Being able to complete the questionnaire in the comfort of my own home rather than a busy clinic, gave me the time I needed to really think about how I was feeling and be able to fill it in without worrying that I was taking too long.”

O

ver the last month, the England team has inspired a generation. As I walked around our borough on Sunday (including the flag-covered Kirby Estate in my ward), the excitement was palpable.

The England team may have not lifted the trophy, but they have lifted our spirits and demonstrated the very best of our country. The young and diverse squad did themselves proud both on and off the pitch, and we can all learn from that. The racist abuse that some players have been subjected to has no place in our society and I condemn it in the strongest terms.

Last week, Southwark Council finally published its long-awaited Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan. This is supposed to set out how Southwark will respond to the Climate Emergency, which councillors

unanimously declared 28 months ago.

But instead of a comprehensive plan to make Southwark carbon neutral by 2030, the sparse, vague and lack-lustre document lacks any detail and simply suggests that more information will follow at some unspecified point in the future. This fails to make any meaningful difference to Southwark’s climate emergency and is a classic case of Labour ‘headlines, not-deadlines’.

It is a disgrace. Labour’s lack of action poses a deadly threat for future generations of this borough.

Last year, the Southwark Coroner’s Court made legal history when it ruled that air pollution made a material contribution to the death of a young girl in South London. Poor Air Quality is estimated to lead to over 200 premature deaths annually; and flooding and heatwaves are 30 times more likely than a decade ago.

The Liberal Democrats will not stand by while Southwark Labour’s dither and delay on climate change affects future generations. Playing ping pong internal politics, wasting 28 months drafting an inadequate plan and failing to provide any meaningful action on Climate Change whilst we face what is effectively the biggest emergency this borough has ever seen, just goes to show how incompetent this Labour administration is.

I will be doing everything we can to tackle climate change, but more importantly working to oust this Labour administration in 2022. The fact is that Southwark Labour are good at coming up with soundbites and headlines – but repeatedly fail to deliver any meaningful action on the issues that matter for our borough.

July is Lavender month and they are great to harvest

here were a few days in June when temperatures reached almost 30°C but the heat did not last and a drop of 16 degrees happened in just 24 hours. July has brought much cooler, humid days with rain showers - but as the month progresses it is slowly warming up.

The showery, cool conditions have provided a favourable environment for slugs and snails causing an increase in population. Snails are very sneaky and hide under rims of pots, in die-back growth – any shady corner - then come sailing out under cover of darkness or during showers to feed voraciously on the soft foliage of Hostas, veg plants and tender perennials. Slugs and snails need to be controlled quickly otherwise plants are damaged or can disappear overnight. There are several ways to reduce the onslaught of the molluscs; barriers, certified organic slug pellets; the latter are effective if applied at regular intervals.

There are many different varieties to suit most situations. Folgate Blue is compact reaching about 30cm tall and is suitable for growing as a dwarf hedge. Hidcote is an early

flowering variety, slow growing with a compact habit and suitable for containers as is the variety Lavendula angustifolia ‘Sarah’.

Munstead is the one most often seen and flowers earlier than other varieties. The bees love Lavender and butterflies are attracted to it.

Lavender dislikes heavy, waterlogged soil, it is a Mediterranean plant preferring full sun and tolerating drought conditions (if planted in the ground).

Harvest Lavender flowers during dry weather; cut stems and gather into small bunches, tie up with raffia or garden string and hang up out of direct sunlight. Dried flowers can keep their fragrance for many years. As well as a joy to grow in the garden, Lavender is an important relaxing herb, it has a sedative effect on the nervous system. The essential oil is used as a blend in massage. It is gentle in its action and traditional uses are to treat headaches, as an aid to sleep, and to help heal burns and scalds (always seek professional advice before using any herbs for treatment).

Looking ahead to next season as gardeners must - July is the time to plant autumn bulbs/corms to ensure that there is always something of interest growing throughout the year. Colchicum is the Autumn crocus – it takes no time to plant a few bulbs in the soil between shrubs and summer flowers.

There are other more unusual ones to choose such as the tiny, fragrant Cyclamen, and Amaryllis Belladonna Lily (Jersey Lily).

Can school closure be blamed on Covid and Brexit?

T

he pandemic has undoubtedly changed all our lives since March 2020 and posed the biggest challenge to national and local governments during peacetime.

But when does ‘COVID-19’ become a bit of an easy excuse to pass the buck?

Similar can be said for Brexit. Some businesses and entire industries have been hit incredibly hard, with many organisations struggling with new red tape and paperwork, rising costs and staff shortages.

Others, however, may be reaping benefits. Both have had huge impacts on the country which cannot be understated.

But when Southwark Council lays some of the blame for its falling school rolls on both issues, something seems amiss.

Certainly many families leave London when their children are young, in search of bigger homes and a better work-life balance. Many are private owners or renters who would not necessarily have grown up in the city. Some EU nationals have left because of Brexit.

However, without clear data on who is leaving and why it seems a bit of an easy option to blame ‘Brexit’ and ‘COVID-19’.

To be fair to the council, it has also cited lack of affordable housing as a key issue. This is a much-longer term trend predating both the pandemic and referendum.

Given the numbers languishing on long social housing waiting lists, it is also presumably a big factor in the overall decline in primary school pupil numbers.

Surely it isn’t a coincidence that the first primary to close due to a shortage of pupils since 2018 is near the Aylesbury Estate.

Hundreds of thousands will now be spent closing the school and making its staff redundant while nearly 20,000 new homes will be built over the coming years - and new schools - in the Old Kent Road.

Keeping the school open is not financially viable - for now. But who is to say it wouldn’t be in five years’ time?

The council can’t magic up money the government won’t pay out to keep the school open. But regardless of where fault lies, one thing is certain - closing down St John’s Primary in Walworth is hugely shortsighted and a massive shame for its community.

Every sinner goes from prison to Peckham

Frank Skully spent many years in and out of prison, and even tried to go straight once or twice, but it was when he faced a three-strikesand out life sentence after being found in the back of a security van full of cash that was the life-changer for him, writes Michael Holland.

On one of his prison stints, Frank got involved with a visiting theatre group Synergy Theatre who have been working towards rehabilitation and resettlement with prisoners, ex-prisoners and young people at risk of offending through theatre and related activities since 2000.

He got the acting bug.

On his release he went on tour with Synergy and joined writing courses at the BFI and at Royal Court Theatre. He then trained at the Identity School of Acting, which created the opportunity for him being in films with Brad Pitt and Dustin Hoffman, as well as writing and acting in his own plays and short films.

Frank says, ‘I have written two plays, ‘Food of Peace’, which won first prize in a writers’ competition run by Synergy Project during lockdown last year and was shown at Soho theatre - It featured my 14yr old son Luca making his debut on a theatre stage - and Plan B, which is about how I created my own paper round job in the 1970s after being refused a paper round job because of racism.’

The attention those works attracted led to Frank being asked to write more about his life experiences, so he is currently working on The Last Hurrah, ‘the story of how I escaped from being jailed for the three-strikes rule, after a judge decided to send me on a theatre tour instead of

From the opening moments of Ola Ince’s production of Romeo and Juliet at the Globe it is clear that this is not going to be the usual visit to Verona, writes Elizabeth Carlin.

Raucous music plays as the cast march onto the stage and settle in chairs to listen to Mercutio (Adam Gillen) deliver the familiar opening lines. Nothing else is familiar and we realise, as the cast rise and begin to move around and introduce themselves to the audience, that this is a very different approach. On the balcony above the action and below the band a visual display shows changing messages which relate the action we see to a sociological statement or fact or statistic. Crime, we are told, is related to deprivation and poverty but rather than addressing these issues the Duke, finding warring gangs of Capulets and Montagues, simply issues threats.

Romeo (Alfred Enoch) is depressed, we are told, as he talks to Benvolio (Zoe West), and as Capulet (Silas Carson) discusses with Paris (Dwane Walcott) the possible marriage to his nearly 16-yearold daughter Juliet (Rebekah Murrell), and Lady Capulet (Beth Cordingly) is sent off to prepare her, the display tells us that patriarchy is a system where men hold all the power. Juliet’s chamber is identified by the large bed which is rolled on and off as required, and Juliet enters her room kick-boxing to be met by the nurse (Sirine Saba) and Lady Capulet to be told she will be introduced to her future husband at the feast that night. She, obedient and childlike, promises to have a good look.

That prison escape was due to the judge knowing the great work that Synergy do with prisons, and the great work that Frank had been doing since his release. Before he found himself tempted to jumped in the back of a security van full of money, of course. The charge for attempted theft was suspended for 12 months while Frank and Synergy combined to make sure he was never tempted again.

Moving on several years, Frank Skully, ex-offender, is now in rehearsals for Every Sinner Has A Future that he says is ‘a one-man monologue asking the question, “Can you be born into crime?”…

Is it nurture or nature? It charts my life from a baby to adult and the coincidences and traumas I faced that led me into crime and how coincidences and drama led me out of crime.’

The play is part of Peckham’s Mountview Academy’s Catalyst Festival,

which will showcase Mountview’s producing and directing talent, and Frank got involved when producer Sarah Jordan Verghese had the piece commissioned.

Nathanael Campbell is directing and says, ‘I was extremely keen to direct Every Sinner Has A Future as it rings close to home for me. Having the opportunity to explore these themes has been invigorating.’

And what next for you, Frank? ‘I aim

Characters and musicians emerge colourfully dressed from back stage, Juliette in a ballet dress, Paris in shining armour, everyone racketing around looking for ‘the bag’.

Then Romeo sees Juliet and everything stops for them except the party goes on and the nurse introduces Juliet to Paris and he sings her a love song, which is played on the screen like karaoke! The audience laughed! As the lovers slip away, Capulet is left drunk on the stage.

The direction is very imaginative.

Romeo shins up ladders at both sides of the sudatorium during the balcony scene played under the maxim, ‘Love is a matter of life and death for young people

who don’t have a secure attachment to a guardian’: Friar Lawrence is introduced tending his greenhouse under the statement that nearly all of the youth clubs in London have closed and young people have nowhere to go. And the adage ‘it is dangerous for women to go out alone’ gets a very chilling contemporary edge when the nurse is abused as she tries to deliver her mistress’s message to Romeo.

In a very affecting fall of rose petals and showers of bubbles the wedding takes

to take the play to other theatres and festivals, and then get funding to make a film of The Last Hurrah.’

This man is going places and it’s not to jail.

Mercutio is killed by Tybalt (Will Edgerton) who is killed by Romeo. Juliet is desolate, (75% of children with mental problems are not receiving treatment). Friar Lawrence the only reliable mentor, (Emotional neglect is a killer) persuading Romeo to have patience and providing Juliet with her potential escape from marriage to Paris.

Her tomb, when wheeled on, is a bower of flowers and the grief of all is palpable – a very effective scene. (The loss of one of those close to us is the main contributing factor to suicide) As Paris mourns, Romeo arrives. Paris has a gun but Romeo dodges the bullet and kills him. Seeing the dead Juliet, he takes poison and dies a gruesomely realistic death at centre stage before Juliet, on waking, shoots herself with Paris’s gun. Brutal.

In a supremely effective ending the excellent band play a dirge as everyone reassembles on stage. A wonderful trumpet sounds as the cast add a mournful chorale. Paris comes to the front of stage and delivers the closing lines.

This production is very different. It’s a bold attempt to reimagine the plot for a contemporary audience and make it accessible and relevant. In this attempt the excellent performances and lively action assured success.

There’s a lot to be said for the winning combination of pizza and beer, but I was lured into something extra to that delightful duo when my head was turned by a man who knows better, writes Michael Holland...

I was out with Auntie Joo, who demands that I still call her Auntie even at my advancing years - “It’s tradition”, she says in a SE15 accent that could cut right through anything SE16 could muster up. We were in Barefoot Joe’s Bar, a very recent addition to the newly spruced up ‘Heritage’ part of Peckham that has had its architecturally interesting buildings given a makeover.

Very nice, but back to the Red Bull that now houses Barefoot Joe’s and where Brad who runs it gives me all the spiel about the chefs and the locally sourced produce while I take my first sip of an excellent Brixton Pale Ale. He then tells me about the fantastic 150 year old, handpainted tiling work that depicts a Shakespearean scene on the wall. Auntie Joo Googled info that explained that the nail bar that was in the former pub attached shelves to it and The Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society are less than pleased at the damage done.

Anyway, Brad then revealed that he had been a mixologist for thirteen years and all the cocktails were tried and tested by himself and a willing friend before they were allowed on the menu, adding that it is cocktails that should be enjoyed with pizza. So I quickly downed the last of my beer and ordered an Old Fashioned.

When the Old Fashioned came I took a hefty slug. It was superb.

Auntie rolled her eyes at me, pulled ‘that face’ and told me not to ‘guzzle’, before calling on a Dark ’n’ Stormy for herself.

But we still needed pizza to accompany our cocktails. It was a short, concise menu, so easy to choose from, although Brad explained that more dishes would be added as they watched how Covid restrictions would be changing.

By now Auntie Joo was tucking right into her rum-based concoction and I could see the dark storm brewing.

“You’ve lost weight - are you eating properly?”

“Yes, Auntie Joo,” I replied meekly while having another little sip of my drink.

“Slow down, it’s not a race!” She whispered loud enough for everyone in the bar to look round at us.

I was then interrogated about any health problems, exercise regime and

dietary practises until I was saved by our pizzas arriving. And they did look good. Cheesily good. But mine looked better so Auntie stole a slice!

The base was soft and springy, and my toppings of ham, mushroom, basil and peppers were sinking nicely into a gooey quagmire of melted cheese.

Perfect. As I lifted a slice from the plate the cheese didn’t want to let go so I had to use my knife like a machete to cut through the stringy attachments. Across the table, Auntie Joo’s Margherita also looked mouthwateringly good.

tales and before I knew it I had a Barefoot Joe Fruit Punch in my hand, a gin-based delicacy that was dangerously moreish. Auntie Joo took advantage of the Happy Hour 2 for £10 deal on the cocktails and polished off another Dark ’n’ Stormy.

This time, however, I could see her loosening up a little, which meant that instead of rolling her eyes at me she began making eyes at the man in the MAGA cap, discussing bingewatching Love Island and spreading gossip about a famous football pundit. Plus, she didn’t make me eat the crusts. What a treat.

Brad was now on a roll and wanted us to sample a new shot he had devised based on bubble gum, called Bazooka Joe. All I can say is that it was blue and smooth and totally delicious.

The pizzas, as large as they were, finally got finished., and excellent is the best word I can think of for them.

Barefoot Joe’s fits in very well at the northern end of Peckham where a good pizza place was needed, and with its friendly and knowledgeable staff I can see it doing very well.

As I headed to the station Auntie Joo headed for Wetherspoons, shouting

at the traffic on the way.

Surrey’s quarter-final chances slim after latest loss Surrey’s Jamie Overton

Kent Spitfires 129/1 (15.3 overs) beat Surrey 128/7 (20) by 9 wickets

By Mark Balwin sport@southwarknews.co.uk SURREY WERE restricted to just 128 for 7 as Kent Spitfires strolled to a nine-wicket victory at the Kia Oval to strengthen their position at the top of the Vitality Blast’s South Group.

Daniel Bell-Drummond went on to a 37-ball 53 not out after he and Joe Denly (31) put on 64 in eight overs for the first wicket to set up a comfortable chase that ended with 4.3 overs to spare.

Ollie Robinson also struck a breezy

unbeaten 45 from 30 balls and Kent have now won eight of their twelve group matches while Surrey look unlikely to qualify for a quarter-final place.

Jordan Clark managed an unbeaten 37 from 31 balls, and there were brief flurries from Jamie Overton and Tim David as 86 came from the last ten overs, but otherwise Surrey’s batsmen could not handle an impressive Kent attack on a sluggish surface.

Adam Milne, the New Zealand fast bowler, was outstanding both with the new ball and in the final overs to take 2 for 13.

Surrey, put in, were in trouble even before the end of the six-over powerplay, in which they failed to hit a single boundary while staggering to 17

for 3.

Jamie Smith (1) top-edged a pull at Milne to extra cover in the second over, Ben Geddes fell for 8 when pulling Fred Klaassen’s left-arm seam to deep midwicket and Laurie Evans departed for 6, skying Matt Milnes’ first ball to midwicket at the start of the sixth over.

After nine overs Surrey had only reached 28 for 3 but then came three successive boundaries – the first of the innings – as Rory Burns first missed with a reverse swipe at Jack Leaning’s off spin, the ball running away for four byes, before connecting with two more reverse sweeps to ironic cheers from a 5,000 crowd.

Qais Ahmed bowled four overs of leg spin for 22, although driven straight for six by David, and Surrey slumped further

to 59 for 5 in an extraordinary 12th over.

David, a big-hitting 25-yearold Australian-raised Singapore international signed for two Blast games in place of injured New Zealand paceman Kyle Jamieson, clubbed Darren Stevens for a big six before being brilliantly held by a diving Jordan Cox at long on for 20 from the next ball.

Stevens found himself on a hat-trick when Burns (19) was then magnificently caught left-handed by Klaassen, flinging himself to intercept a sliced cut at short third man, but Overton defended his first ball before swinging Stevens for the first of his three sixes in the veteran allrounder’s second over.

Left arm spinner Frankie Brown joined the attack as early as the eighth over, and he also took a wicket in his second over. He followed up with two more, to reduce Wimbledonians to 49-5 in the 21st over.

Javier Frost and Brad Steyn then added 45 in twelve overs for the sixth wicket before Lodwick returned to have Steyn caught behind for 25, off 37 balls. Two more wickets for Lodwick reduced them to 106-8, but partnerships of 13 for the ninth wicket and 19 for the tenth lifted the total to 138 when last man Adam Kelly was run out trying to keep Frost on strike.

The last four wickets had added

44 runs. Frost had contributed 36 of them to finish on 73 not out, off 101 balls, while his four partners had amassed just six runs between them.

Lodwick finished with 4-29 off 13.1 overs, Brown with 3-30 off 12, while Ellison and Ahmed Khan took one each. Keeper Michael Harms held three catches.

Ollie Steele and Chris Purshouse launched the Dulwich reply carefully against accurate bowling from Frost and Kelly, with just 14 runs coming from the first nine overs. They then accelerated to reach 46 in the 17th over when Steele was caught behind off skipper Clint McCabe for 14, having faced 63 balls.

McCabe continued to threaten,

conceding just nine runs from his first nine overs, while fellow spinner Ewan Parker took the next four wickets, all given out leg before, while bowling his 14 overs straight through for just 30 runs.

Lachlan Skinner went for a single, Brown for 6, Purshouse for 35 (off 66 balls), and debutant James Schofield without scoring. Dulwich had scored just 18 runs in 14 overs while going from 46-0 to 64-5.

Matt Marfani arrested the decline in company with Harms in a stand of 27 for the sixth wicket.

With Parker bowled out, McCabe recalled his opening bowlers, and they needed just 6.2 overs to take the last five wickets and dismiss

cover to go for 23 in the 17th over.

Alec Stewart, Surrey’s director of cricket, didn’t hide his feelings. He said: “It was a really bad day for us. Kent bowled well and fielded brilliantly, and gave us a lesson in all three facets of the game, to be honest, but we were just not good enough.

“We only had 17 on the board at the end of the powerplay and it took until the tenth over for our first boundary, so you are always going to be up against it after that. Jordan Clark and Jamie Overton showed some good intent in the second half of the innings but defending 128 was never going to be enough.

“We now need to go to Cheltenham [this Friday] and beat Gloucestershire in our last group game if we are to have any chance of quarter-final qualification.”

Dulwich fall to first home defeat in almost two years Old Wimbledonians 138 (46.1) beat Dulwich 106 (45.2) by 32 runs

By John Lewis sport@southwarknews.co.uk ANOTHER LAMENTABLE batting collapse saw Dulwich go down to a 32-run defeat in their AJ Fordham Surrey Championship Division 2 match against Old Wimbledonians last weekend.

Dulwich put their opponents in to bat, and reaped an immediate reward as skipper Jon Lodwick and Sam Ellison each took a wicket in his second over to remove both openers.

Dulwich for 106. Marfani, who had taken 25 balls to get off the mark, finished with 23 off 52, while Harms went for 12 and Ellison, Lodwick and Alex Gledhill for a single apiece.

Dulwich had lost all ten wickets for 60 runs, with the last four wickets going down for just three runs, in marked contrast to the last four of their opponents. Kelly finished with 3-31, Frost with 2-15, and keeper James Murphy took four catches.

This was Dulwich’s first home defeat since August 2019, and sees them fall to second place, one point behind Bank of England.

This weekend, Dulwich visit Epsom, who have recovered from a poor start to rise to sixth in the table.

SOUTHWARK CLAIM SILVER AT BMX GAMES ‘Events like this are really important especially after the year we’ve had’

With 20 boroughs competing, reigning champions Southwark missed out on top spot by just a single point as host borough Hillingdon won gold, and Hackney took home bronze.

Southwark’s riders included Lucas Tewolde, Ocean Headley, Robin Matern Alonso, Chrystiano Goodman, Jalihah Patel, Lily Rose Khemdoudi Loubere, Natanal Tonska, Teddy Hedkey, Etana Price, Oskar Alverez, Aaliyah Akerele, Alex Taylor, Jacob Twerefour, Jevaun Fairley, Alexander Allamdi, Winter Sharavant, Taylor Thomas-Leontie, Amelie Rocha, Elias Yesema and Adele Varutti.

Individual medals were won by Headley (bronze), Matern Alonso (bronze), Tonska (bronze), Price (silver), Alverez (silver), Akerele (gold), Taylor (silver), Twerefour (gold), Fairley (gold), Rocha (silver) and Varutti (gold).

The riders will be hoping to follow

in the tracks of Kye Whyte, who previously competed for Southwark at the London Youth Games and is now representing Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics.

Nigel Whyte, Kye’s father, who was at the London Youth Games event, said: “It’s been a great day for all the kids.

“Events like this are really important.

Especially after the year we’ve had. It gives everyone the chance to have a go and helps gets kids off the road and onto bikes.”

“I thought it was an amazing event,” London Youth Games CEO, Andy Dalby-Welsh, added. “Young people’s physical and mental health has been challenged during the last eighteen months so to see them out supporting one another, competing against one another, and doing it with a smile on their faces has been brilliant.”

The London Youth Games has been using the power of competitive sport to create life-changing opportunities for young Londoners for over 40 years.

It has provided a pathway for some of the greatest athletes to come from the city. Dina Asher-Smith, Raheem Sterling, Alex Scott, David Weir and Mo Farah all had the opportunity to represent their boroughs growing up.

Having been forced to cut short its 2020 season due to the Covid-19 pandemic and consequent restrictions, London Youth Games is delighted to be back delivering live sport for young Londoners at a time when they need it most.

The south London side were defeated 4-2 by the Kent-based team who play in the London & South East Regional Women’s Division One South, the division directly below Millwall, Two outstanding goals from Abbey Dell and Amy Nash twice levelled for the Lionesses, but Ashford ultimately comfortably prevailed.

“It was a disappointing loss,” Whitmore said. “I think the game was lost in the sense that we were already going in low on numbers, which isn’t always the best start – especially in your first pre-season game where you have got some potential trialists in the squad as well.

“You’ve got new faces in the squad who haven’t played in that competitive environment, so you are already asking quite a lot of the squad from the start, especially if it’s their first game all playing together.

“As a manager, we should have been able as a defensive line to read that they were trying to play the same ball every time and what we could have done to stop that. We had new faces within the back four and within the squad, but like I say every week, there are eleven players on the pitch that could potentially stop us conceding.

“I don’t think Ashford were technically better than us, but they were more organised. They have played together and had a season together, and we have done some recruitment.

“Organisation is something you are always going to work on, with tactics and formations, and we haven’t had that much time to do that, what with a pre-season game and recruitment happening at the same time.”

Whitmore did take positives from the game and praised the contributions from Dell and Nash. Dell’s goal was an exquisite finish from the edge of the box and Nash’s a sublime, dipping 20yard free-kick.

“I think it’s important to talk about the positives. Abbey Dell took her goal well, as did Amy Nash, and we were creating opportunities and chances, we just weren’t really finishing them in our final third.

“Again, it’s something we’re going to work on and I need to see an end product. I need to see an end product from everyone, no matter what their position is on the pitch.

“We need to be clinical, that’s one thing we do need to be better at and we talked about that last year.

“I do think that we did play well, especially in the first half, and the score-line didn’t really do us any favours or make it look that way, but we did play well at the start.

“The girls are having to find their feet a bit and that’s the reason we have this pre-season, so we are ready for when the season does start.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk STEVE KAVANAGH has been blown away by the response as he raises money with a charity cycle for Prostate Cancer UK – highlighting the generosity again of Millwall fans, and the wider football community.

Kavanagh was setting off on Thursday morning cycling with friends from Tower Bridge to The Den ahead of stops at Brighton, Portsmouth and Southampton football clubs before arriving at AFC Bournemouth’s Vitality Stadium on Friday.

Kavanagh was on a Millwall-branded bicycle provided by Reilly Cycleworks on his latest fundraising cycle trip.

The Lions CEO lost his father to the illness and has participated in the Football to Amsterdam charity cycle.

Asked if he was ready for the gruelling route to the south coast, Kavanagh quipped: “As set as you can be when you’re about to sit your backside on a razor-sharp seat for the best part of fifteen hours.

“I’ve worked it out at about 160 miles. It might be a bit more but I haven’t told any of the lads that are doing it with me that yet.

“If it was just purely the London to Brighton route it’s about 160 but it’s another five miles to do Tower Bridge to The Den. London-Brighton starts at Clapham Common so we’ll pick that route up there. I’ve not let on there are a couple more miles on top, it might frighten a few of them off.”

Kavanagh explained to the News how he got involved in charity cycling rides.

“When I lost my dad the Football League at the same time had Prostate Cancer come on as a charity partner. Prostate Cancer came up with this fantastic concept of Football to Amsterdam,” he said.

“I said, ‘right, I’m going to do it’. I was at Southend at the time and I did it and raised about £3,000.

“It was a brilliant event, lots of camaraderie, ex-players. On the first one I did I was cycling with Terry Butcher and Matt Holland at one point. It sort of inspired me so I did it a couple of times.

“Unfortunately every year they did it was around the time of the Football League AGM, so it tended to clash. There were a couple of times when I couldn’t do it.

‘Generosity of Millwall fans phenomenal’ “So I was having a chat with a couple of mates and they all said, ‘you know what, we fancy doing that’.

“When I joined Millwall we took the club minibus and headed off ourselves and cycled to Amsterdam. They were following me, which was a bit scary because I didn’t know where I was going! So I’ve done the official one a few times and then with a group of us.

“Last year, obviously we couldn’t do anything. This year, you can’t take the risk of whether we can or can’t get to Amsterdam so we devised a different route. I’ve contacted the clubs so they’re all going to welcome us and give us some

photo opportunities.

“We said how about we raise some money, I floated Prostate Cancer so we’ve all joined together in a team.

“My total at the moment is about sevenand-a-half thousand. The actual team of us, it’s nine-and-a-half thousand. My original target was £5,000. It got up quite quickly to that so I set what I thought was an ambitious target for us to get to £10,000. I’m really hopeful we get there before Thursday morning.”

Kavanagh highlighted the contributions yet again of Millwall fans to a charitable cause as donations poured in and he passed his individual target of £7,000.

“I put it out on a couple of the [club] newsletters – we do a monthly update now – which has raised awareness,” Kavanagh said. “Millwall fans...some of the messages on there and some of the donations have been unbelievable.

“They’ve always supported the Poppy Appeal, Cancer Day – [the latter] to the extent of beating every other club recently [in money raised] – and their generosity with these things – I’ve not gone and physically worked it out – but I think the fans alone is over £2,000.

“Directors and sponsors and employees is probably at least another £3,000 of the money I’ve raised. Also

football clubs, Preston North End, Brentford, Fulham, lots of the clubs have come in and supported me as well.

It went out on the EFL newsletter the other day.

“The generosity of the Millwall fans and the wider football community has been phenomenal in terms of what I thought was getting to an ambitious target for little old me getting on my bike and cycling for a couple of days.

“To get to that level of funding for Prostate Cancer is unbelievable.”

‘Negative Man’; ‘The Announcer’ – wacky Lions roles revealed

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk RYAN LEONARD has no problem being Millwall’s ‘Negative Man’ – and it goes down a treat with his “weird” team-mates.

Ryan Leonard is a positive person – but has a job to do

Leonard, 29, has been allocated that role by club skipper Alex Pearce, and hovers like a dark cloud over any positivity after a good performance.

Jed Wallace is often in his sights, as is another beacon of positivity, Tom Bradshaw.

Leonard is there to take them down a peg or two if they are getting carried away.

“Pearcey gives everyone a job. My job is to keep everyone a bit more realistic when we win a game,” Leonard explained on Millwall’s podcast, Wall Talk.

“I’m very positive on the pitch, all of that, keep the lads going. After the game, if we win, do well, it’s not to bring the mood down, it’s just to keep everyone grounded, level-headed.

“I like to bring a little bit of negativity.

For example, Jed is very, very positive. So if Jed says something positive I just say something slightly negative to even it out.

That’s how I would describe it.

“People really enjoy it. Bradders likes it.

I think it was after we beat Bristol City last year, and we hadn’t won for something like fifteen games.

“We got into the changing room – and we’d played really well, to be fair – and we were all buzzing. I said, ‘listen, lads, it’s the first game we’ve won in fifteen, let’s just relax’.

“That kind of thing. Which isn’t negative, it’s a fact. We’ve got a weird group of lads, to be fair. Everyone really, really enjoys it.”

Leonard amusingly revealed he can’t forget his role or he could be hit in the pocket.

He said: “It’s difficult, because I can get fined if I say something positive off the pitch. I’ve got to be careful!

“So if I say, for example, ‘I reckon we can beat them Saturday if we give it a right good go’, I could get fined for that.

Sometimes it does work the other way, so sometimes I don’t say anything. It’s best

for me to be quiet.

“It keeps everyone involved, keeps everyone in the group. Some of the jobs you’ve got are ridiculous, but it keeps everyone on their toes.”

Leonard also revealed who has the most unusual role, as Jon Dadi Bodvarsson’s responsibilities riff off English being his second language.

“Jon Dadi’s got the best one, he hates it,” Leonard said. “He’s ‘The Announcer’.

Jon’s Icelandic, he can speak English fine but he’s not fluent. So whenever anything happens he has to stand up in front of the whole group and go, ‘excuse me, excuse me...’ and shut everyone up.

“And Jon’s very quiet. He’s got it wrong a few times and says the wrong English, but everyone just laughs.

“If one of the lads goes, ‘by the way, we’re training later,’ Pearcey will say, ‘no, no, that’s not your job’. So he has to go to Jon and whisper, ‘we’ve got an announcement, we’re training half an hour later’. So then Jon has to stand up in front of everyone and shush them. It’s funny.”

Ambitious George sets bar high

New keeper relishing No.1 battle with Bart EXCLUSIVE

That’s George Long’s response when asked whether he’s one of those players who dreads pre-season or relishes it.

And it’s just as well he does, because he has a tough job on his hands to oust Millwall’s player of the season for the last two seasons and one of the best goalkeepers in the Championship in that time.

Long, 27, turned down a new contract at Hull to officially sign for Millwall on July 1. He started pre-season with his new team-mates that day and made his Lions debut during their five-day training camp in Scotland last week, keeping a clean sheet in 45 minutes in their 2-0 win over Motherwell.

Bart Bialkowski played the other half, as he looks to retain the jersey he has had a firm grip on since the opening day of the 2019-20 season.

Long is up for the challenge, and in goalkeeping coach Lee Turner – who was one of the people who recommended him to the club – has someone who is renowned for pushing his keepers hard.

Bialkowski will almost certainly start the season as first-choice between the sticks, but the Pole knows how quickly things can change. Frank Fielding started their first campaign together as Neil Harris’ new No.1, but was injured on his debut and Bialkowski never gave him a chance to get back in as he kept sixteen and then seventeen league clean sheets, career personal bests.

Long also knows how quickly football can throw up these opportunities, and he is going to make sure he’s ready if one comes along. He’s ambitious, and wants to play in the Premier League.

His work ethic will fit in well at his new club, and he’s already seen the drive of the squad.

“Murray Wallace is an animal, he can run all day,” Long told the News.

George Long gets stuck into preseason work “I really enjoy it. I love hard work, to be honest, so I don’t mind the tough sessions.

“I usually do a fair bit in the offseason as well just to make sure I’m ready. The last thing you want to be doing as a player is playing catch-up.

“So I want to ensure I’m hitting the ground running and my body is prepared to work hard to be ready for the season.

“Pre-season is meant to be tough and challenging but I really enjoy it.

“Bart’s had a great couple of seasons thus far. For me coming in, it’s not

going to be easy to get in the team.

“But I always back myself, I know the ability I’ve got to play at this level and I believe to play higher as well. It’s a case of showing the gaffer what I’m capable of and waiting for an opportunity.

“One thing I know in football after being involved for ten years now professionally is that opportunities come all the time. All I can do is make sure I’m ready at all times, which I always do.

“I think pre-season is going to give me the opportunity to impress and show the gaffer the different attributes

I’ve got. Obviously they’ve done their research and that’s the reason they signed me.

“They watched me and looked into how I play. I’ve got utmost confidence that I can break into the team.

“I don’t feel I’ve fulfilled my full potential yet. I believe I can play at the top level in the Premier League.

I’ve got that belief and I think things will take care of themselves if I do everything right that I can to maximise my performance.

By John Kelly Johnk@southwarknews.co.uk BEN THOMPSON and Matt Smith were on target as George Saville made his first start since returning to the club in Millwall’s 2-0 friendly win over Motherwell in Edinburgh last weekend.

Saville and other summer signings Daniel Ballard, Scott Malone and Benik Afobe all started against the Scottish Premiership side, before another recruit, goalkeeper George Long, came on at the break, one of eleven half-time changes.

before Jed Wallace was denied.

Gary Rowett’s side kept up the pressure and went in front when Cooper found Malone who crossed for Thompson to score at the far post.

Millwall continued to control the game against a team who were starting their competitive season this Wednesday against Queens Park in the Scottish League Cup. Malone and Millwall’s other wingback Mahlon Romeo combined a half an hour in to set up Thompson, but Well stopper Liam Kelly saved.

Graham Alexander’s side then had their first effort on goal as Bartosz Bialkowski saved from Kevin Van Veen.

One of the half-time substitutes,

Tyler Burey, drove forward five minutes into the second period but neither Smith nor Mason Bennett could reach his cross.

Millwall didn’t have long to wait for their second as Bennett crossed from the left and Smith rose above two markers to head home.

The Lions never looked like giving up a goal, with Alex Mitchell part of a back three that included Shaun Hutchinson and Murray Wallace giving little away.

Billy Mitchell almost added a third but he saw his effort saved by Kelly.

Long comes into a stable club after three years at Hull. Millwall have a core group of players put together by Harris and built on by Gary Rowett.

That was an important factor in Sheffield-born Long’s decision to move south.

“When you sign somewhere you want to think the manager is going to be there for a good few years,” he said. “I think that’s the case at Millwall.

I know the gaffer’s done really well with the team and he’s obviously got ambitions to take us higher and be pushing towards the top end of the league.

“That is a big thing for a player because you want to feel stable and settled. As everyone knows in football things change quickly, but here it feels like a great group and a great set of backroom staff as well as the gaffer.

“It’s a really great bunch of lads.

Everyone seems to get on with each other. You can tell there’s a togetherness already from what I’ve seen.

“I don’t think you get anywhere in football without that togetherness because obviously it keeps the squad pushing in the right direction when things aren’t going so well which happens across the season, bad results or bad bits of form as a team.

“It is imperative to have that good core, that bond and belief between the lads.

“The signings we’ve made are really positive and it definitely looks like we want to be pushing towards the top end of the league and seeing if we can get amongst the promotion mix.

“The Championship’s such a tight league, there are teams who put a good run of form together and they’re in and about it come the end of the season.

“That’s definitely got to be our aim, believing we can take that next step and be challenging.

“From what I’ve seen so far the squad’s definitely capable of doing that.”

By John Kelly johnk@southwarknews.co.uk MILLWALL CHIEF executive Steve Kavanagh has revealed this summer’s transfer budget has been spent – but added the Lions are in a good position to react to any “variable” in the rest of the window.

Millwall have signed five players – all recruited in time to be part of the training camp in Scotland last week – and will now likely have to offload if they want to strengthen further.

Boss Gary Rowett would like to bring in at least another attacker but room would have to be made in his squad. Jon Dadi Bodvarsson is available for transfer, with Rowett telling the News recently that the

club is “open-minded” if there is an “opportunity” for him elsewhere.

With the return of George Saville from Middlesbrough, the emergence of Billy Mitchell and the signings of George Evans and Maikel Kieftenbeld last January, Millwall are wellstocked in midfield. Ben Thompson was close to leaving last summer and Portsmouth remain admirers of their former loan player.

The Lions have offered a new contract to Jed Wallace and would have to replace arguably their most important player if he left.

Kavanagh said they don’t want to lose “any major assets”, but he added the early business the club completed this summer gives them that time to chase other targets if players depart.

“The bulk of our business is done, which was always the plan to do that,” Kavanagh told the News. “The

budget is spent, perhaps over-spent, and I need to manage that.

“I’d like to think most people can see that what we’ve done is improved the team on the pitch. Things happen in transfer windows, positives and negatives, but we’ve got ourselves a fantastic base from which to work now.

“The plan isn’t for any major assets to go out, we don’t want anyone to go out, we want to have a successful season on the pitch. We wouldn’t have done the work we’ve done in pre-season to get the players in if that was the plan.

“But this is football and things happen. With the stability of the squad we’ve got, it’s a great position from which to manage that in any direction as to what might or might not happen.

chasing two or three players and then you’ve got the variable that anything can happen over and above that.

“Getting that business done early gives us that stability to manage that as well you can in what is a volatile environment.”

Kavanagh was asked if there were any developments with Wallace, after Rowett said the attacker could wait until later in the summer to weigh up his options.

He replied: “No, not really, it’s been said. The manager’s said what he’s said and we all know the situation. I don’t think there’s anything more to add to that, really.

“Jed’s a fantastic individual and been a fantastic part of this club. As we stand he’s here for the season and I’m sure if he is here then he will have a fantastic part to play in what will hopefully be a brilliant season.”

Defender has loan admirers EXCLUSIVE

The nineteen-year-old centre-back made his first senior appearance for the Lions in their 2-0 friendly win against Motherwell in Scotland last weekend. Mitchell was one of eleven changes at half-time and was part of a back three with Shaun Hutchinson and Murray Wallace.

Millwall build their players from 45 minutes up to 90 minutes in pre-season friendly games, the last of which is currently scheduled at Ipswich the weekend before the start of the season.

Mitchell was on loan at Bromley last season, where he played ten times as the south Londoners reached the playoffs before losing to Hartlepool United in the quarter-finals.

“The plan for Alex is to feature in the early friendlies and then when we start moving towards 90 minutes it’s to see where we are,” boss Gary Rowett said.

“Ryan Leonard is not far away from fitness so when Lenny’s fit if we feel that Alex is not going to get much game-time we’ll have a debate as to whether he stays with the group to help him develop technically and tactically, or whether we get him out playing games again.

“We’ve had some enquiries already.

“He’s acquitted himself really well.

He’s a young lad who’s not been with the under-23s that long so to step up quite quickly and not look out of place is testament to him and his character.

“He’s done really well and I’m quite excited to see how he develops further.”
